I am š
Thereās literally a section under frequently asked questions that answers your question
Check the table of contents
Oh NVM I didn't know I could click on it š
Read the channel Nugget linked. But to answer your question: no, you don't need to buy anything
After you've read that and the Basic Rules, feel free to ask us questions if you don't understand something
Thereās also a bunch of vids on YouTube on the classes + races would recommend
I need to refresh on information but I'm definitely going to be trying to finish writing my campaign
Guys what type of save do you do for poison
probably con
And why would you do it btw
wdym
usually the description of the effect states what save to ask for
Like is it to cure the poison
Oh thank you!
Trying to translate all this into bot commands is harder than it looks
ācharacters can see a 25-foot-long heavy wooden beam lying against the west wall of the cave at the south end the poolā would this mean itās on the player side or not
we do not have enough info for that
it would specify "with a DC 10 perception check the players would see ..." generally
so id normally include that in my room overview as they enter it
sometimes its behind a passive, sometimes its an active check - but it would say one way or the other if it wasnt just out in the open
what module are you running?
That means the PCs can see the wooden beam
for a first time DM , which module would be the best to run for newbies? (Except for Lmop)
The new starter set seems to have good reviews
The 2024 one?
The level 1 adventure from Yawning Portal (The Sunless Citadel) is also good for newbies.
Yes
Thanks! Will look into it
heyy
Hey I am super new to dnd Iāve played baulders gate but I made my first character and was wondering if anyone was running a campaign on dnd beyond anytime soon and would like to play
You should check out #find-a-game if you wanna, well, find a game : D
Should have all the info you need
I didnāt even see that my bad
Hi new here and really want to learn how to play and how to DM.

@rustic current check out the bot post above and ask any questions you might have
more of a hands on way of learning works best for me tbh
How much do you know so far
i have played a lot of solasta and bg3 as recommended by some folks so far. i own the 2014 5E books.
ive heard 3.5E is the best
but do you understand the rules? keep in mind that bg3 is pretty homebrewed
Iāve heard otherwise
thats subjective, i agree but a lot of people dont
Havenāt played it so canāt say.
I recommend learning 5e (2014 or 2024) tho. Most tables use it.
hello am new any one willing to have a chat with me teach me the rules i already have a bunh of charaters and i want a dm who is open to differnt ideas
i understand the rules fairly well i believe. i wont pretend to know more than i do lol
People who played 3.5e when it was out and got good at it tend to say so.
The current (and by far most popular edition) is 5e.
Welcome! If you have questions, feel free to post them here. It's easier to crowdsource answers, as people often don't have time to dedicate hours by themselves.
i understand lol. but as far as i know solasta is pretty faithful to the rules
It's fairly close to the 5e 2014 rules, yeah. Even moreso than Baldurs Gate 3. Though there are still differences, such as how resting works.
i just want to like find a good first game you know?
same here
For sure! Finding a game can be a bit challenging though. Here on the server we have an lfg section, see here for an explanation: #find-a-game
But there are many other places where you might want to look for a group. Community pillar iamrazorwing has created a document with some good pointers: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
where is the LFG section thank so much for the help though
(I do recommend learning the rules first)
Do yourself a favour and read the actual rules. Don't rely on your knowledge of Solasta and BG3
You can find it in the channel link I posted above.
#learn-to-play can help with rules
Lot of reading tho, but there is an interactive adventure if that helps
more of a hands on learning kind of guy. thanks for your opinion though!
i have been watching a lot of DND newb content so im pretty familliar with the rules i think
Have you learnt hit dice, short and long rests, how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat?
Many YT and Tiktok videos have mistakes or outright misinformation
Please read the actual rules of the game you're interested in playing
role dice for combat roll for iniatives and i even have characters with backstories already and they all have species from the game since they are my OC's i created a long time ago
Oooh whats hot dice
Dang it typo
i know classes and subclasses too hot dice not so much
im trying to make a character in dnd beyond but some of it is confusing (ping me in reply)
plus i RP a lot in reddit
i am sure there are plenty of dms out there willing to teach someone hands on. not all of us can sit there and learn rules from a book. i didnt learn how to work on heavy machinery or how to weld from a book. nor do i have the time to do so when i just want to game. why gatekeep?
What specific thing are you confused about?
Also https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character might help.
can i send the image in dms
Be respectful to your GM and fellow players and learn the fundamentals of the game before joining. The player section of the Basic Rules isn't exactly novel length
Oh Iām I completely understand that practical application is best for many people. Thatās just the checklist that I have: know those, and you can comfortably join most games.
Also, asking people to read the rules of the game isn't gatekeeping
difference between disrespect and having adhd where the complexity fries my brain to try to fully comprehend the words on a page. but put the dice in my hand and show/explain it to me i pick it right up.
Also, it is usually common courtesy to know your character and the basic rules before joining a game.
You donāt need to memorize the rules either
See it like this: by reading the rules you're becoming a more attractive player to those DMs that don't specifically offer an intro game.
^you can just learn where to find them. Though you should know some very fundamental rules.
i would obv know my character
can i send the image in DMs?
Yeah sure
accept my friend request
Sorry yall gonna pop out to help for a bit
I like it
yeah, it's just annoying when people do things like make entire videos, or theorycraft posts on a forum, about something in which a 1-minute rule search immediately disproves
Memorization to a T isn't required, but having just enough vague knowledge to know there is some rule about X, thus being able to find it, is great
i know classes, how to build a character, and modifiers. the rest is a no.
The low effort D&D content creator mill runs off newbies not reading the rules
if i watch dnd content its typically critical role or the drow historian (favorite race is drow)
Then we know what to work on : D.
favorite classes are warlock or paladin
?tag new skills
Skill Proficiencies
Most ability checks involve using a skill. The skills are shown on the Skills table, which notes example uses for each skill proficiency as well as the ability check the skill most often applies to. The DM has the ultimate say on whether a skill is relevant in a situation.
If a creature is proficient in a skill, the creature applies its Proficiency Bonus to ability checks involving that skill. Without proficiency in a skill, a creature can still make ability checks involving that skill but doesnāt add its Proficiency Bonus.
ok nvm i knew that one too
Do you know DC and AC?
I dont really know how to ask this question since ive never played a d&d game but I want to learn more d&d lore⦠how exactly do I get an understand of basic lore? Or is it better I just join a game blindly
Every table has its own lore
Well, basic lore doesnāt exist unless youāre referring to Forgotten Realms.
Don't worry about until you've joined a game
^
sorry guys gotta run. its 3:30am and i gotta get out the door for work. gonna be a long day in the cold for me since im not off till 7 or 8pm. dm me any advice! ill try to check as the day goes on
Ope!
Good night!
Im only worried about it mostly because ive had fun making characters in d&d beyond but dont really know if my backstory should be created after I join a game or before?
Making characters is a lot of fun tho :>
There are established settings in D&D like Forgotten Realms, Eberron, etc. But I wouldn't worry about lore at all if you're new. Your GM may not even run games in these settings
There are a few settings, which you can think of as their own worlds, complete with their separate lore. There are some popular ones, like the Forgotten Realms (you might know names like Neverwinter and Baldur's Gate, those are from that setting), Dragonlance and Eberron. Popular D&D streaming group Critical Role also has their own setting.
Many games might make up their own as well, so there is no way to read up until you actually join a game of that kind.
You will most likely create an entirely new character with GM guidance
Not necessarily.
Ah I see, I honestly thought I had to prepare a bunch of characters and pick whatever one isnt already picked by other players
Treat characters that you create before joining a table as practice characters
It entirely depends on the DM. Some DMs have very specific settings and stories in mind while others are more flexible and into more sandbox style games.
For sure. I had games where I never looked at the characters the players created because it was a more open style of game. And I had others where I worked individually with each to make a backstory and flesh out a character.
Typically, such details will be communicated by the DM either in their game post, or you can get that info by asking them directly.
I'm probably one of the very few DMs who do this but I like to encourage my players to give me world lore then give myself the job to fill in the blanks.
My style of DMing falls under one extreme however.
This is very similar to how I run my campaigns as well
Jealous of your players. š
lol
Donāt even know I fell asleep
I should probably do that, seeing as it's 1:59.
I wish there was someone I could sell my soul to for aspect of the moon
what should i choose for a spell, fog cloud or false life (wizard)
please ping me in the reply btw
One generates an area of obscurement by filling it with fog, the other gives you temporary hit points so you can take a bit more damage.
Which is more useful to you?
Both are fine choices. Choose whatever seems cooler, or more in line with your character
Well it depends on a bunch of other factors, especially other spells you already have. I will say however, fog cloud has a lot more potential than the small power of false life.
Just good positioning alone can save you much more health than false life protects, IMO.
i do already have the shield spell, but im still not sure
(I'd also vote fog cloud)
also can i do custom flaws, ideals and stuff like that?
For sure! The personality of your character is one of those things that is completely up to you.
The only thing I'd suggest is that you pick characteristics that aren't likely to clash with your fellow party members.
last time i did it i was doing it with a book and there was like a list of flaws and stuff...?
Yup, those were examples of what you could add to your character based on background.
yeah but i had to roll for it
Well you don't have to. That whole table was meant as suggestions. You can of course roll with them if you like.
ah alright thanks
factions?
It's just the server celebrating the new books, with factions from the setting those books are about.
do u need all the books to play dnd?
Not at all. The free rules have all the basics that are needed to get started:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
What the books do is give you more options to build upon those basics.
ohh thankss
If you want the prewritten ones for reference, they're here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/personality-and-background#Backgrounds
Think of it like a base game, and then a ton of "DLC" adding more options beyond the utmost basics. And some people don't use certain extra content.
all the books... going back to the 70s. now that would be a massive bookshelf. check into the free rules. as a player, the Player's Handbook would be a great investment. possibly the Monster Manual if you play something that regularly involves creatures, but the free rules and SRD should generally have enough for that.
i don't have the 2024 book. does it have any rules for sidekicks?
No - the most recent rules for sidekicks are still in Tashas Cauldron of Everything. Assuming you mean sidekicks as "take monster statblock and convert it to a party npc".
yup. i wasn't sure if that was updated for the new rules, or in the dmg or something.
Hi all, any idea why my friends character sheet isn't showing any attack spells under actions please? https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/151103798
You don't have any attack spells except for Produce Flame, which is shown.
Many of your spells use saving throws instead of an attack.
ahhh thanks
I am a newbie to Dungeons and Dragons and play with a group of guys in person but only once a month. I want moooore yet not sure I can get out of the house to play is this fun to play online and are there any online games that would be good for a real newbie? Message me if you got one going
#find-a-game might help.
If I'm wanting to gain access to use my BA to attack as a blade singer is the only way to do that via a fighter dip?
Dual wielder feat or war cleric
I mean you can just wield two light weapons as any character
Ah, yeah š
Yeah I think most builds can get away with that
Heyy
Welcome!
Hi, thanks
is there a limit on how many known spells i can have (not prepared)
Typically the class says how many you know and can prepare.
the class says so in their description
as a l1 wizard can i know 6 and prepare 4 (im in dndbeyond and i selected 6 and it let me select them)
dndbeyond does everything for you
That is correct. As a wizard, your spellbook means you can potentially have a whole lot of spells, assuming you find them during adventures.
ye but i just wanted to check
how many known can i have at once
In your spellbook? There isn't really a limit afaik.
I wouldn't worry about that though, the amount of spells you can prepare is typically more important and much more limited.
so i can stack them until i have every spell?
andthen i can swap them out for whatevers convenient with a short rest
Per default, wizard swap spells out on a long rest.
i think there was something where i can swap it out on a short rest
oh tahts level 5 my bad
Ah, right. And that's also limited to only one spell.
yeah but i can still swap out one thing
For sure. Wizards are generally quite flexible with how many spells they have access to. It's one of the classes main strengths.
why doesnt fog cloud use a spell slot
Normally it does. A character who has picked Fog Cloud from a feat like Magic Initiate can cast it once per long rest without using a spell slot.
Is money needed in ONLINE dnd?
no
Phew
Online games are sometimes free and sometimes paid. It is dependant on each DM in particular.
You certainly don't have to join a paid game. In fact, because the Basic Rules are available free online, you technically don't need to pay anything at all to play DnD.
yuppers
Hey We have a small group that plays all the time and are very open to new players. we have a few different campaigns going currently with a few more set to start soon. we also have multiple dmsm who run one shots all the time. If that sounds like something you'd be interested in feel free to send me a dm.
dont advertise here, check out #find-a-game for that
Wouldn't really call it an advertisement but fair enough, my abd.
advertising for a game means just saying "i have a game to join" or "i want to join a game"
I said my bad bro.
i was clarifying bro
oh yeah i forgot about that
Hi
Hi
I have an idea for a character and dunno if like its possible to actually use in a game basically my character is a magician who uses a magic deck of poker cards to cast spells, effects, or summon things. But what he draws is random and the amount that he draws is also decided by a dice roll, i am new to dnd and have never actually played before but i thought the idea would be fun and was wondering if itd be possible in an actual game with limits decided with a DM. Would this be possible
Not exactly the same, but a wild magic sorcerer with the cartomancer feat sounds near perfect
I got a skeleton themed poker card deck, could necromancer elements be added or no?
well this sounds cool but the random amount is, well.... broken, and the random spell you can just roll a die and say you pull the card
Which is why I recommended wild magic sorcerer
I was going to put a limit on the amount drawn up to 6 but also it could be less as well
Not the exact same, but there is a dice you roll for the effects
6 is WAY too much
theres a reason you can cast only one leveled spell
*per turn
yup
Ah ok its still in the work so im just tryna figure stuff out i was making him only able to cast 1 card per turn the cards drawn are just the options hed have
i reccomend you play and learn the game before homebrewing this much
or at all actually
Yeah for sure def will do thanks tho
Look up the Cartomancer feat. Itās the closest thing weāve got.
Ok ty guys
Is this possible if one person can be a knight and other one have a muskete
Can one character be a knight? Yes - fighter or paladin classes would work well.
Can another character have a musket? Possibly if the DM allows it in their games and it makes sense for the game.
So can it be different centuries tho? If dm allow
This game is not based on real-world history at least in any accurate way.
Do you mean aesthetically or like literally 2 characters from the real world brought into a D&D setting?
Also the game has magic soooo....
D&D is broadly heroic fantasy, a wide variety of aesthetics exist.
U mean by technology
Can one have only swords and magic while other bullets and tanks
Why i said gaming
Different campaigns have varying levels of technology if thatās what you mean
Tanks no, but rough magical analogues to vehicles do exist (Spelljammers, Infernal War Machines, etc). A player wouldn't necesarily own one or use one in normal gameplay unless it was specifically granted by the DM or your party had to use one in the story.
I suppose a DM could allow that - but generally player characters are based in a general aesthetic and vibe of the game setting the DM is using and where technologically all are comparable.
Do answer is yes only if dm allows and it's possible
Yes
Nice
Such is the answer with every single in game question
The DM determines what rules are in effect at their tables/setting and even specific game context.
Wait can a game be like a medival times or space one?
Possibly
Damn
It's the firearms bit since that's setting dependent mostly. Though real world historical accuracy doesn't have a huge (if any) bearing on a magical fantasy land, just wanted to point out that firearms have been around for extensively the same amount of time as "knighthood"
Though the latter may need some homebrew
Player: "I'd like to suplex that dragon!"
DM, knowing there isn't such a rule or mechanic for specifically that: "Sure! Give me an athletics check!"
Wellll reflavoured grapple and attack?
I'd perhaps uncouple the idea that "D&D = medieval" except for in a traditional aesthetic that's built upon by fantasy elements & other themes that the setting designers (&/or DM want to include).
Hi guys Iām a complete beginner in this type of thing (RPGs) and Iām so confused, how am I supposed to play? Like, I literally have no idea - Is there some game to download? Am I supposed to print out a board?
#learn-to-play is a great place to start and feel free to ask questions!
We sit down at a table and collectively hallucinate a story while rolling dice to determine the outcomes of actions
But yes, #learn-to-play is best
Seems exciting
It is a lot of fun!
Oh alright thank youuu
Sound like a cult if think about it
Many things sound like a cult if you think about it
Cult of the dice goblins...
Fair
I dont want to know that
Once you buy one set...
No
all the shiny math rocks!!!
Nuh uh
You canāt stop it. Embrace it.
Crunch
As a jumping off point, here's some official settings that build upon the base themes of D&D and/or mix them with new stuff for cool aesthetics.
Want D&D in "space"? Look at Spelljammer
Want D&D in horror? Look at Ravenloft
Want D&D in heroic fantasy? Look at the Forgotten Realms
Want D&D in noir? Look at Eberron
Want D&D in swords & sorcery? Look at Greyhawk
Want D&D in the post-apocalypse? Look at Dark Sun
This guy is the goat he literally chewing up all for me ā¤ļøāš©¹š„¹
Is there any kind of rules that cannot be broke or it's pure sin that deserve death penalty for breaking it
Pretty much āThe Dungeon Master has the last sayā
Cuz then it just kinda breaks the game oftentimes.
Nothing specifically from game mechanics/rules wise - the rules are to provide a shared framework for playing together.
But socially there's some big things that can cause major issues:
- taking the game too seriously can be problematic on a lot of levels
- breaking expectations for appropriate play
- pushing or breaking boundaries that have been set by the group for what's allowed/appropriate at the table
- purposefully griefing/trolling the group
- not showing up without communicating beforehand if possible
Thansk, ill note that
And using AI to make a character for you/having it to play the game for you
Thatās generally frowned upon here
Yo
I mean folks can use what they want at their table, but we don't allow AI-generated work here on our server.
Yo
I guess I cant use emoji
You can but you should follow server rules when doing so!
Damn
Can I play a campaign with someone itās my first time
I think you got my idea that the anti-ai is goated
Single character posts are considered spamming and posting reacts/emojis/stickers not inline with text can disrupt the discussion particularly for folks in our community who have to use text to speech tools to participate here. Imagine them trying to follow a discussion and all of a sudden hear :broken-heart: read out to them with no context/connection to the existing conversation.
Check out #find-a-game to look for a game, and I recommend learning the rules in #learn-to-play first beforehand if you havenāt already.
Ok
You have no idea how happy I got when I saw the "AI-Generated content is not permitted" text in the rules
There's way too much AI in creative spaces nowadays, in my opinion at least
Hi
evenin. let us know if you have any questions
Helloo
Could I mix any race ( like Orc x human/Elf x tiefling/Dragonborn x dwarf) or is there some rule about that?
a common answer to questions, like this lol, is that will be up to your DM. Many will say no not technically, but may say, pick the information from one of the 2 races, but we can skin it so that you "are a mixed race". Now if you play the 2014 rules, there are officially 1/2 Orc and 1/2 Elf (the other half being human). Blending 2 races without nerfing it makes them VERY OP
Another option is the "Custom Lineage" species introduced as part of the book Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, which is a catch-all solution for playing species that aren't strictly in the books
I just wanted to mix different looks characteristics, honestly.. But what if I donāt have a DM(yet, at least)?
What should I do? Iām not quite sure if Iām supposed to find a group first and THEN make my character or the other way around, so..
Alright thank you, Iāll check that out
it never hurts to build a character or 2 for practice. you can always bounce what you have done off the DM when you eventually get one and they may be totally cool with it, or minor changes, or may say no. BUT practicing helps u learn the rules and the how to use characters and is rather fun lol
Yeaa, Alright thank you very much!! That helped me a lot!:D
Glad to be of help my friend
Are you asking how many sides are on a d21?
I don't understand what you mean by a din 21
I think that's the point
No I said D 6
A d6 has six sides (cube). The number indicates the number of sides
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Well, in order to generate a random number from 1 to 20, a die would need 20 sides. And so on for the d12, d10, d8, d6, and d4.
......
You good luv?
Im trying to determin if theres some trolling or not. Ho wthe heck can one not know or seen a six sided dice, They are everywhere.
I'm pretty sure they just meant die outside the d6
I've seen people who didn't know there were dice other than six-sided ones. So it's not actually a big stretch to imagine people wondering why some have so many sides.
I mean I didnāt know there was such a dice of a d100 in physical form so
Took me by surprise when a friend showed me
oh yeah I have one of those. A ball basically. Doesn't stop rolling lol
otherwise, using a d10 and a d% works much better for a 1-100 roll
itās stills cool thing to own n just be like āI pounder the dice"
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one youāll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, ā3d8 + 5ā means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.

If youāre feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
And know that what youāre feeling is VERY common
Thanks do you enjoy dnd also ive done one campaign before 4 years ago
I think we all enjoy D&D, or else we wouldn't be here š
Yup! Great game, great experience.
Iāve been playing for a lil under 2 years
Fair
itās a learning but once ya got the basics down itās pretty ez to follow along
I feel like ima be nervous during roleplaying or just sound stupid
That's totally understandable. But you can also do descriptive roleplay. So you describe what your character does in narrative terms instead of acting it out.
I often mix both descriptive and active roleplay even as a DM.
Nobody is perfect, it is understandable why youād be worried about it.
As a beginner you can always keep the character more simple to ease ya self into it more
I can do funny voices but my only roleplay background is drama lessons in school
we can all make our character do cool stuff and describe em even cooler
I donāt even have drama lessons. I canāt do voices, and I struggle to differentiate each character. But I try to make up for it through worldbuilding, plot and descriptions. No oneās perfect, weāre all still learning.
With the Goliath race, can you change your giant ancestry after a long rest or once you build your character and decide a giant ancestry, thatās the one you are stuck with?
Youāre stuck with it forever
You choose one ancestry when you select the species.
Thanks, wasnāt sure
Kinda hard to change your ancestry after just taking a nap lol
Ah yes when I go to sleep as a tiefling and wake up a dwarf, casual Tuesday am I right
If a feature lets you change something after a long rest, it will say so.
Some races had some stuff like that, which is why I second guessed it
lol, thatās changing races, Iām talking about going from cloud giant to a fire giant or to a stone giant
Yes but you can't go to sleep and decide you have different grandparents - same kind of logic applies here.
Well tbf I donāt wake up Asian and then go sleep and when I wake up the next day Iām British
But anywho, there are no stupid questions, glad we could help!
I'm new to DnD, what do I do and how to play a game?
Welcome! Check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel for some useful links and resources to help get you started!
Feel free to ask questions
I recommend the free rules particularly, but get a look at the entire channel
Well, see it like this. A goliath ancestry can make as much of a difference to someone as it means to be a drow as compared to a high elf.
Plus donāt ancestryās in dnd have "stats" n perks
Depending on the setting and the culture your pc is in, it might even have societal differences.
Yeah, I didnāt see it like that to be honest
So just being able to swap em would be ehh
Not in the case of goliaths, Iām looking in the book now and Iām not seeing anything for stats or perks
i think he's talking abt race now
In 2024 there aren't stat differences, but there are special features.
Yeah, Goliath is the race
A cloud giant ancestry goliath has a different supernatural boon than a fire giant ancestry goliath.
My bad lol I misread, but yeah, that is what is different with the ancestry
the ancestryās of any race also does affect appearances
So thatās a thing to still factor
What is the most crazy our outrageous thing happend in game? Just curious to hear
I got blown up by a holy hand grenade while fighting a killer bunny by my own ally
Probably a better topic for #dnd-discussion
Haii

Super new to crafting, Iāll be playing a bladesinger and would love the ability to craft on the side some better equipment but I donāt know what tools I need to be good at or what all Iāll need
Is it worth taking a feat to have the craft feature or at least all the tools weāll need? Iāll have the new Homunculi spell which will help
crafting tends to be something that is handled very different from DM to DM, so its best to ask yours how things would work
Gotcha, would an artificer dip help with this?
Artificers cannot make items the way people often (mistakenly) believe.
Ah
Here are the general crafting rules. I recommend going over these and check what you can make with it:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#CraftingEquipment
Rule of thumb: No magic items unless explicitely allowed by the DM.
there is a crafter origin feat
that one should help. Artificers eventually get to craft magic items faster, but that is still somewhat optional in general as an activity
And than it's prob going to cost time and money. So these are things you do on the side when not out saving the world. Like I had one char make himself a gem for his focus that gave +1 DC on his spells, but it was design to fit in the pummel of his sword. He made the magical item while our Dwarf crafter installed it into a new sword he made for him. Took a month in game time but he allowed it without any major rolls cause it was pretty common magial item (though prob more uncommon) that where being combine into one effect.
Yeah, the crafting rules do account for time and money fairly well
It's up to the DM if there are any further complications.
Over the course of 5e alone, there have been multiple suggestions as to how to do crafting. I find the '24 approach to be the simplest.
I should note that crafting is not really a newcomer topic and this should probably go in a different channel
Perhaps #dnd-discussion or #dm-discussion depending on the focusā¦
Hello
hellooo i'm a new player and want to host/DM a session with my friends, does anyone have any tips for first-time DMing?
Assuming you know the rules...
Grab a pre-written adventure, do some reading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in!
I have a longer list here: #dm-discussion message You can also search the server for dm advice and/or dm tips. This topic comes up all the time!
Has anyone got a like brand new campaign or would start one? I would love to be apart of a campaign but I donāt want to be the dm and idk what to do tbf š
check out #find-a-game, dont advertise for games here
Okay I was only asking I didnāt know there was a channel

do i need to learn a worlds lore and everyting
nope

And feel free to ask questions!
Can anyone who plays in Spanish tell me the correct translation of āthe weaveā? Iām finding like 4 different answers trying to google it and only knowing basic Spanish
If a character dont have any holdable weapon and they use something like as brass knuckles does it count as close range weapon or unarmed/material arts?
unarmed strike
Wait it does?
or martial arts but yes
Is there lvls in dnd? If yes how does it work? Can a lvl 1 character be stronger that 20 one because of description? Like lvl 1 is some sort of super duper berserker and lvl 20 is archer so lvl 1 is stronger?
No
the definition of unarmed strike is striking without a weapon
no
Well wait, let me be specific, there are levels in D&D
There are levels in dnd
But a level 1 will never be stronger than a level 20
If I may ask, how much of the Basic Rules have you read?
Are brass knuckles not weapons
but no strength isnt defined in "i am strong because i say so haha get invalidated"
I forgor
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
If anyone needs it
Levels are explained here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#LevelAdvancement
Damn thats a lot
you dont need to read everything
but also did you read any of the rules?
To be honest no, I didn't read any rules
well dnd is still a rules-driven game, so you definitely should
Im just asking real ppl because they have more experience
Sure ill read them
we cant handhold you through everything, asking questions is good, but reading yourself first is kinda needed
#learn-to-play might help then. Go there and ask any questions, and know that feeling overwhelmed is normal.
A large part of the reason we ask newbies read first and ask questions along the way is because the Basic Rules provide a foundational understanding of the game, especially the first chapter. A questions-first approach often intersects multiple areas of the rules even if the question seems simple, which often either begets more questions and/or doesn't make as much sense if you don't have the foundation.
As an example, "How do I cast Fireball?" seems simple but involves all the following rules.
- Spellcasting ability
- Spellslot usage
- Levels
- Combat rules (actions in combat)
- Spell components
- Spell targeting rules
- Saving throws (and by extension d20 Tests)
- Damage & damage types
If you were to compare your understanding of dnd as to that of a jar with water (knowledge) inside it, the foundational rules would be the jar itself. Reading the rules lets you systematically and methodically create a stable jar, while a question based approach often feels like youāre gathering shards and putting them together while pouring a bit of water onto the broken bits.
If that makes sense
Yep
Yay
oh my f##king there so much to learn š
If youāre feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
And of course, if you have any specific questions, please ask away!
Just relax
And take it at your own pace
Yup, past the first section (Playing the Game) you pretty much just need to focus on the rules pertaining to the class, species, and background you want to play as
No need to learn all 20 levels of Druid if you want to make a Wizard, for example
or u could watch a dnd show
like a season of dimension 20 helps ease a newcomer into most of the rules
and some's free on youtube!
that doesnt teach you that much actually, cause a lot of them homebrew for the entertainment
Liveplays, especially high production ones like Dimension 20 or Critical Role are more helpful as rules supplements. It's important to remember such shows are primarily entertainment first rather than a simulation of the game.
I think actual plays are good for seeing the game in action, but they're entertainment first and foremost, not instructions.
well it's more to just make the starting process easier without info dumping uk
I saw that to create a character you need a paper with all you need in there but just unfilled or you need to create with your imagination?
The character sheet has the info you fill in by following the rules of character creation.
there are rules on that, so yeah, read
The official 2024 5e character sheet is right here:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/phb/downloads/DnD_2024_Character-Sheet.pdf
not to bring up shows again but there's a youtube series by matt mercer on creating ur sheets LOL
i j find it easier to learn by video than reading tho
was that the show then? no
Ig ill just read and watch the show
Otherwise D&DBeyond has a character creator with the Basic Rules integrated
Handbooker Helper? It's important to note that that series was made for the 2014 version of 5e so some stuff is outdated.
see what works best for u! don't stress over the rules too much
enjoy the process
even if u don't go through A - Z u can still start a game!

from what i gathered with the 2024 rules, half-species no longer exist. are there rules for custom species in the PHB?
Uh idk ;-; I'm new I just saw something about it in a home brew and thought it was cool, I'm sorry
Dragons are not a playable species, but dragonborn are. Half-species as options also don't exist except for the old 2014 Half-Elf and 2014 Half-Orc.
If you want to play a hybrid species work with your DM to pick an appropriate workaround such as:
- Picking the Custom Lineage species
- Picking the feature set of only one of your component species
- Coming up with a homebrew option.
5e isn't the simplest TTRPG system, there are other more beginner-friendly ones with lighter rules.
Why does name have a glow?
You can flavour your character appearance to be a mixture, however that will only be the appearance youād have to pick one of the races theyāre a mix of and stick to that races sheet
Like you be a tiger dragon born just your sheet will be that of a dragon born only
Oh that sounds decent
I'm not sure if this is allowed, but if anyone is available to do so could they perhaps walk me through making the sheet for the character, I'm dumb T-T
itās better to learn the rules and basics first.
I understand it's probably not great to try and make this great and complicated character when you're first starting
Itās not hard to work around the idea, itād just be a dragon born with a tiger dragon like appearance with some lore of why in backstory.
hello eveyone i really want try dnd but there are to much information and my friedns dont want read for a game. do you know anyone want to play with the new starters
yeah nah reading for dnd is good.
Itād be better to get a base understanding of the mechanics n such before attempting to join any campaigns
Okie dokie thanks for the idea!
how can i join
That would be in #find-a-game n such, but again highly recommend going to learn some of the basics first before hand!
the stats themselves mechanically would be Dragonborn. You wouldn't get anything extra, its just your description and "fluff" that would be customized.
think of it like wearing a custom skin in a game. it doesn't give you extra abilities beyond what the base skin does, but it looks fancy and you can build a story around it.
Dnd is a collaborative role playing game it doesnāt work like a mmorpg
Mhm, thanks. I wish I'd thought of that lol
Yep, flavouring is basically just tweaking the āvisual" appearances of stuff within reason ofc. As long as it doesnāt affect mechanics AND is thumbed up by the dm
okay ill check it thank u
@brisk pine Iād still say looks through the link here
I get ya friends donāt wanna read but dnd isnāt just join a game and play, you have to consider a decent amount first specially about ya character and class
the game really only works if everyone involved is using the same rules. to do that, there's a fair amount of reading. but once the game goes along while playing things move much smoother
ye i watched some viedos adn read a bit i have a character and class but chosing cantrips and spells im confused as a clerick
so i thought i can join a group and listen how they doing it
since i'm more familiar with the way 2014 spells work instead of 2024, i'm not the best to ask. others here are much more knowledgable about 2024.
well you have to factor in the subclass too + how you want to play the character
There are multiple ways to play classes even if unconventional
Heya, I'm new to D&D and being DM and was planning to run my campaign on Roll20 anyone know of a free module to kick things off for my party?
do they still have The Master's Vault on Roll20? if i remember right, that was a 5e 2014 adventure that was also a tutorial for how to run Roll20 adventures.
I know plenty of 2014 adventures, but none for 2024 explicitly.
The major mechanics are the same; itās the details where they differ.
ahhhh that makes sense thanks
yeah it just codifies a few otherwise-obscure concepts, like Bloodied, capitalizes a bunch of things, etc. It's a big polish
Hey everyone.
Hello
Hello three-fries-technique swordsman
Hi
How is everyone?
can people play dnd on a pc or is it strictly an irl game
because iāve seen some videos on tiktok and it doesnāt seem that bad and it peaked my interest
you can play online with other people over discord etc
only reason it peaked my interest is because i love the diablo series
how would you play like online
find a group, use digital character sheets and dice roller, maybe a virtual tabletop website if necessary
so thereās no like website or even full game of it
dnd is not a video game
it just seems so confusing but fun at the same time
i know donāt worry

i just thought they wouldāve made one
there are video games based on dnd, like baldur's gate 3
but no actual full on game about it
baldurs gate 3 was so bad šŖšŖ
very high expectations for that game
huh? its one of the best games in the last 20 years
nuh uh
well taste differs I guess
i guess so
anyway, playing dnd online is not fundamentally different to playing IRL.
you just use different means of communicating stuff
ohh
question is playing for 12 hours a real thing or no
it might sound stupid but thatās how iāve heard people describe it
I think the longest sessions I had were like 9 hours?
its certainly possible to play for 12 hours, but its not very common
I think around 4-5 hours?
not to bad
though not sure if someone actually made a survey on this
what would happen if someone were to go or anything like that
they should tbf
depends on the situation. sometimes players need to leave early and the group might decide to end early too or to continue with someone else controlling the character in the player's absense
ohh okok
Over in my regions it's usually 3-4 hours.
I've noticed that people also have less stamina online, so I cap those at 3.
oh yeah online sessions tend to be shorter in my experience too
Agreed.
this is more my taste
thank you
i just donāt know how to go about making a character or anything like that since i am completely new
Start by reading the free Basic Rules
#learn-to-play here
yeah i will later today
I mean the game didnt win all the game of the year awards and player records for being bad, but if you guys dont like it thats fine. Just dont claim a game is bad if it wasnt to your taste, if it clearly has a ton of effort, value and talent inside.
i js had the thought in my mind right now so i had to see if there was a discord
Yeah, I still think it's bad. Whether a game is good or bad is subjective anyway
the game was made amazing it just dragged out for way to long imo and everything seemed forced not fluid enough
diablo 4 on the other hand was 10/10
there are objective and subjects parts to these kind of things.
Let's move on. No need for you to defend BG3 in this newcomers channel
could i not just copy a character of google if i couldnāt be bothered to go through making everything
there are premade characters in many of the starter adventures
thatās good
how stupid could i make my character if i were to make one thatās what i want to know
but making a character does teach you a lot of the rules for the game so its not a bad idea to learn how to do it
I still suggest that you make a character to learn the basics of the game. It really isn't hard.
iāve seen how people have lore and stuff about there characters i just donāt think i could put enough effort into that sort of thing
iāll look into it more later
You don't need to worry about that stuff
its fine if you character backstory is like 1 paragraph with the basics
Just make a character to learn the rules of the game
I'd say it all sort of depends on how that character will negatively impact the enjoyment of the other players.
If it doesn't, all good
I mean that is more of a roleplaying decision than a mechanical question. theoretically 3 is the lowest possible intelligence score if you roll dice and get unlucky.
but yeah, its not good to play a character so dumb they dont work as adventurers anymore
makes sense so i couldnāt have my character wielding a sword of death or something like that
RP them as a moron.
Even an int score of 8 doesn't necessarily make a character stupid, mind you.
i didnāt mean stupid as in an idiot
normally, you get mundane equipment as you start
magic items are a reward for actually playing the game
i meant like i canāt describe how i meant it
This might annoy your party members so consult with your GM first
There are very concrete rules on what characters are able to do, if that's what you mean.
so is there types of characters
letās say like a rouge
or a brute
like skyrim mixed with diablo
yeah you can find many common fantasy archetypes in dnd
makes sense
so i couldnāt be a human with an rpg
Well, dnd is based around classes. Each character picks from these:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes
Your class will largely determine what you can do.
dnd doesnt typically include modern weapons. if you dm run that kind setting, sure, but its not common to see
I think reading the Basic Rules document first will give you a better picture of what D&D is.
There are guns in D&D baseline rules but your GM might not allow them
Don't expect modern weapons though
so most of the time it would be classes of like a fantasy settings
and those are Renaissance guns, not rpgs
like lord of the rings
Yes, because D&D is heroic fantasy
yeah lord of the rings but sometimes weirder
like we can get some scifi stuff thrown in from time to time like psionics, mindflayers etc
i am quite invested in dnd it does seem very fun
what is a mindflayer
didnt you say you tried BG3? its the purple guys with tentacle faces
It's a monster
ohhhh
realistically can i not just use my like elden scrolls character or diablo or even skyrim and just base it off that
or is that to boring and basic
bone spear necromancer
you can try to convert those characters to 5e rules sure
just dont expect to get like a 100% match
okok
Better to use as inspiration than as a goal to duplicate, yeah.
i'm new here, can someone teach me how to play?
One on one teaching isnāt really done here very often, but I can direct you to read on #learn-to-play and answer any questions you might have! Or if I donāt respond in time hopefully someone else can.
thanks so much! i have read all the free rules and i reached out to a west marches style game master. iām hoping to be able to play in the next few weeks! just need to think about character now.
Thatās great! Very nice. Have you got any questions that need answering or advice on your character (if youāve started)?
iām a bit confused where to start but was going to do some research on it now! i kinda know about 3 diff classes because i listen to a podcast :)
Well there are a few steps to making a character:
Choosing a class
Choosing a build (background, species, specific ideas)
Doing the stats
Making a backstory
DnD beyond has a guide too
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
oh amazing thank you! I kinda want to be able to talk with animals so thatās all i really know!
Well then Iāve got great news
Druids can cast speak with animals for no cost at level 1
yay !!!!! i wanna be a druid then. !! is that a species or class? xx
Or rather, they always have it prepared
They still need to cast to speak with animals

itās just a bit tough trying to find times to play because they are on EST and iām GMT- do any of you have any tips for cross time zone scheduling š
cos the complexity is high, would it be a bad one to start with?
Any class in dnd is perfectly learnable
Druids as a full caster and a wild shaper (they can transform into animals) do have a bit more things that need to be learnt, but nothing you canāt do with a bit of effort
My tip is not worrying about matching timezones but instead see if the time they play is a time you can play. I know some D&D games that have players from all over the world - the players though can play at the time the group can meet and play. You can also look for play by post/text-based games where it's more of "post 2-3 times a day, time doesn't matter".
does a druid start with those things?
A simpler class would be, say, a fighter. But that doesnāt mean I recommend only fighters to newer players, cuz then they miss out on loads
what do you mean by text based dnd? i thought all had to be in person/talking
They get spellcasting at level 1 and wild shape at level 2 and their spellcasting progression is faster and better than other classes that arenāt full casters
?tag new pbp
Some D&D games happen as emails back and forth with a DM who puts together daily/weekly recaps, forum posts, or even posting text in a Discord server, or even, believe it or not, posting text messages inside a virtual tabletop! I've even heard of D&D games happening over physical mailing of postcards...
Iāve never heard of that last one but holy thatād take ages.
wow thatās incredible! would stuff like that also be advertised on the looking for section?
and do you still get to roll dice???
Yes. Granted the game I heard about that did that took place in the early 90's when internet access was kind of new in many parts of the world. So mailing postcards was found to be an acceptable solution...
Yes you'd roll dice and communicate what you rolled. Obviously this kind of play requires a bit more degreee of trust than watching DM and players roll dice right there at the table.
it sounds like a more low stakes way of playing. iām a teacher and canāt always commit to 6hrs of playing in a row
Then it might be great for you! It doesnāt capture the full irl experience of the game, but itās a low commitment way of playing that Iāve found to be decently fun.
thank you so much for all of ur help! and i love ur pfp
and thank you so much too!!! iām very grateful
Itās a Niffler, Ty.
Lupin thanks you

how exactly does the xp system work?
does it divide based on the amount of players participating? and do npcs get xp aswell?
The GM awards it for solving encounters, advancing the story, or good RP. Encounters don't have to be combat.
XP is divided among all party members
yeah but like combat specific xp
NPCs don't get xp
we defeated 4 skeletons (me and 2 players) and an ogre (me and another player), somehow the other player got 302 but i'm probably just wrong
like the result as 302
The xp should have been evenly divided
Well no, depends. If npcs helped the party significantly, xp will be split with them-
is the DM able to decide if the npcs get xp?
There is no point in awarding XP to NPCs because NPCs don't level up. They don't follow PC rules
the DM decides how XP is split up. normally, PCs all get the same amount, but DMs can rule differently
NPCs don't level up, so they don't "get" xp in a strict sense. But PCs may get less xp if they had significant help from the npcs.
but yeah it was the 1 other player that did the calculation, I think he did it as if the 3rd player from the 4 skeletons fight didnt exist or something
I just tried that, I dont think that's the case
Here's what the rulebook (DMG) has to say about it:
Each monster has an XP value based on its Challenge Rating. When adventurers overcome one or more monstersātypically by killing, routing, capturing, or cleverly avoiding themāthey divide the total XP value of the monsters evenly among themselves. If the party received substantial assistance from one or more NPCs, count those NPCs as party members when dividing up the XP, since the NPCs made the challenge easier.
well the npc only did like 4 damage to the ogre anyway
Well, deciding that is a DM call.
still, im more confused about the result of the calculation he got.
he might be faking it, since I dont see a logical way to get to 302
We can't understand your DM's mind unless they explain their reasoning
The GM can't fake XP awards.
a player did the calculations
not the DM
I cant tell you how its done at your table but the default calculation would be
4 skeletons= 200 xp total (50 each)
1 Ogre 450 xp
total 650 xp / 4 players = 162 XP for each player
3 players for the 4 skeletons, 2 players for the ogre
But it was one encounter right? You don't get xp for the "kill shot", you get xp as a whole.
you are all one party, all xp gets split up evenly
one of them wasnt there
either way, im pretty sure the dm probably didnt count them in with the xp
So was this actually 2 different encounters or one encounter?
Okay - then each encounter's XP would be divided up by the DM and applied to the party members involved in the encounter.
I will say that having different party members have different XP/levels is going to be a future headache for the DM and group as far as adventure and encounter balancing...
Easiest answer here is the system laid out in the books is a guide and not an end all exact need. Which ever did the calculation did it in their own way. If it was the dm then they gave you what they wanted and thatās just how it is. If it was a player and the dm agreed cool. If it was a player and the dm didnāt agree then itās a moot point to wonder as it doesnāt count.,
That's fine, your current level doesn't influence XP gained.
not sure if the dm agreed to them doing the calculations, they just accepted it
Accepting =agreeing to
how are you meant to get 302 from that amount of xp...
Well now you can ask the DM in the next game session how they do XP and get clarification or even have a group discussion about folks want to handle this
Also when I used to use xp as a DM, I would reward extra xp to players who were a bit now creative but again I was the dm so I was allowed to
We don't know - ultimately this is a discussion you and your group need to have to make sure everyone has the same epectations on how XP will be calculated and allocated.
I wasnāt there and canāt read the person mind so I donāt know
I tried talking to him about it when the session was over and he said things like "yeah I split it between us" and "go ask the DM "
As you seem to be unclear on what exactly happened and why with this XP and how your group manages this - that is a conversation to have with the DM and group together.
"Hey I'm unclear how <character> got this much XP and <character> only got this much XP... Can you clarify how we handle XP here in this game and how it's allocated? And if it's not divided equally among the party, how do you, DM, plan on ensuring the game and encounters are balanced when party members are at different levels?"
alright, I came here first because i'd have to wait a while before I can speak to him
does "homebrew story" mean the campaign is homebrew
Yes - it is created by the DM and is not from an official or third-party publication
Is a goblin boss with a few goblin minions he can use redirect attack on but they wont attack by themselves a fair bossfight for lv 1 party of 4 first time players?
Good question for #dm-discussion!
I was going to add this, when I played in olders system the DM would do this and I would too. Though back than each class had it's own xp chart so it was not uncommon to have some folks level up before others. With current system you really need to track one pool for the party so bonus XP isn't that common or the DM does Milestone levels. I always prefer the xp myself cause than you might level up mid part of a game.
But best thing is to ask as a new player how the xp is broken down by the DM and awarded.
Hello everyone! I'm new in Neverwinter and i like the game so far but i was looking for group or someone to duo with, and btw i have experience of games like this so i wouldn't be so noob haha
Appreciate yall !! (:
This server is for Dungeons & Dragons the tabletop role-playing game, not any of the video games directly.
#dnd-media , maybe?
Unfortunately, it seems like you have the wrong discord server. The neverwinter video game can be discusses in one of our off-topic channels (#dnd-media specifically) but the main topic of this server is the tabletop game. Specifically 5th edition.
I did long ago but now respond, so I'm if you or anyone know a good server to find people and play Neverwinter with
I will be really thankful
Hi, Iām new to DnD and will soon be hosting the Arkham horror starter scenario. Iām sure this has been discussed before, but do any DMās use any software like chatGPT to help with scene setting/describing? I think my biggest weakness is going to be my limited vocabulary. Of course, Iām sure this would improve overtime, but Iām just curious
You can find a link to the official server here: https://www.facebook.com/NeverwinterGame/posts/-introducing-the-new-official-neverwinter-discord-httpsdiscordggepxjkbqnf5many-o/769350668749967/
Arkham Horror is not D&D, so you might be in the wrong place!
A prewritten adventure will have descriptions, don't worry about that.
Thanks, I thought I saw dmās posting Arkham horror scenarios in the ālooking for playersā section of this discord. Regardless of the scenario, I would still be curious if any software is used, if you donāt mind me asking
I would highly recommend that you do not use ChatGPT or any other AI service while playing D&D. Aside from the ethical issues with it, AI struggles with cohesion and making things feel like a connected part of a larger whole. Its also very bad at making things feel unique, since the whole point of the program is to give you a response that is cobbled together from what people talk about online. It is, by definition, the most generic answers possible
^ Colossus said what I think pretty well!
Thanks for the response Colossus, practice makes perfect I guess!
exactly! If you want to improve as a DM you need to stretch those muscles for yourself
Plus, ai stinky poo
Haha, I promise I wonāt bring up AI again š
Its ok to discuss it if you're curious. The topic comes up here often enough. The one thing to be careful of though is that it is against server rules to post anything created by AI in the server, such as images or text snippets
what's funny is if you Uno Reverse the AI by asking it to give you prompts for you to make stuff by human hand.
Hello there!
Name's Ragnar Bearblood.
Big fella, small mug, big heart. I fight for the wild places, my friends, and anyone who buys the next round. The Emerald Enclave said I should 'preserve balance'- I just thought that meant not tipping over the table.
Its nice to meet you all!
you wouldn't be ragnar... the red... would you?
Ha! Nah, not Ragnar the Red. Different Ragnar. I don't sing much... just drink louder.
Welcome aboard! Be sure to check the #channel-guide to get your bearings.
Well friend, thank you for the directions they are truly appreciated, I was about to make my way there now.
Ill buy you a drink, if we meet at the tavern, as thanks for the directions.
What use does astral projection have? I'm attempting to put together a setting with an organized-crime style main antagonist who remotely, magically assassinates people (or threatens to) to maintain power in the setting. I was looking into the best ways of cross-nation murder, and either teleport or astral projection come to mind
But with teleport, you could do some Huey Long stuff, taking physical objects from people periodically to store direct lines to their bedrooms or places of business. With astral projection, you have to futz around in a giant empty plane? I'm not even clear if you can do anything if you find a passageway back into the material plane. So would this mob boss primarily use teleport, most likely?
this is probably not a question for the #dnd-newcomers channel, since its not about the basics of how to play the game. The short answer is that the Astral Projection spell lets you project your mind into the astral plane, but not your body. If you want to go more in depth, you should probably post this in #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building
Oh sorry lol I'm trying to put together my first campaign, so I thought this was a good place
A friend and I are new, but we're looking for a one-shot for the weekend. She's new but doesn't want a long session or repeated.
Do we search in find-a-game?
Have a look here #find-a-game
#find-a-game has instructions and guidelines for how to search for a game, but its not where you would actually look for one. Scroll to the top of that channel and read through everything posted there. That should explain the process
Thank you
#looking-for-players is where you can look how ever one shorts are played over one session, and average oneshot can take anywhere to 4-6 hours
what does she mean by repeated?
Like consistent and coming in every weekend at a set time.
ah. gotcha.
She wants her first time with TTRPG to be one session to find out if she's into D&D.
Thank you!
How much interest would there be for a pick-up game specifically for people who are new to D&D?
Just a one-shot with pregenerated characters
You'll have no problem finding people. Stick a post up in #looking-for-players, I bet it'll fill up in no time.
This is not the proper channel for advertising a game. If you'd like to host something, you should post it in #looking-for-players (instructions for how to do so are in #find-a-game)
I haven't decided to do one yet but I feel it might be a good thing for the community
What I can suggest when making a recruitment post on Discord:
- set it at a time that works for you
- use a Discord timestamp
- be clear about your requirements for players
- be clear about the goal of the session
Dawg I need a game, I have absolutely nothing better to do and I've been trying to get into one for two weeks. AUUUUUUUUGHGHHHGH!!!
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
I've been stalking the looking for players page
Have you posted what youāre looking for???
Have you tried other D&D servers advertising in #looking-for-community?
Also Roll20, Demiplane, and other similar places have Looking For Game features

And remember to learn the rules first
Hello. I am located in Hawaii. I played DnD (3.5) many years ago. I am unfamiliar with any platform. Yet, I would like to learn. I have an old laptop, headset, but no microphone. Suggestions, anyone?
is dnd your first ttrpg
Yes. I am not even sure what ttrpg means.
Ah. Table Top rpg? But yes, DnD 3.5 was my only rpg experience.
yes
I played DnD 3.5 for about 5 years, while I was injured. I just got injured again. I will be disabled this time. So, plenty of time to ttrpg, now.
š It is life. I adjust and move forward.
Great attitude to have š
Hi, Iām new here. Iāve been looking to try DnD for a while now but I have zero clue on how charecter sheets work. What should I try and do when creating a character?
What should I do now that Iāve created my charecter
Get it reviewed
Send it to to here ot preferably #character-discussion and weāll give you feedback
Awesome. Thank you
Ahoy - So I played DnD 1st and 2nd addition back in the days and stopped playing back in the early 2000s but after listening to Critical Role on Spotify fancied getting back into it. Im from the UK so ideally looking for a UK Group unless there is a US one I can fit in with my timezones. Any ideas?
First will of course be learning the rules of 5th edition, primarily to see if you'd like this system, and secondarily to know it in the first place as to play it
Im new like never touched it but I wanna learn how to play it and make characters can someone help me I also would like to know if this server has dnd games cuz I rlly wanna join
Yes to all the above
I mean I new to dnd entirely btw
I just know the jist
For learning the rules, check out #learn-to-play and ask any questions you might have. If you find youāre feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
Then, for making a character, check out this dnd guide
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
and then get help on your character either here or in #character-discussion
Then, when youāre ready, and only when youāre ready, should you go to #find-a-game
Like I get the gist of the rules but would it be bad if I end up trying to do sum I can't and stuff or what?
If you try to do something you canāt, your Dungeon Master will tell you so
But it is better to know what your character can do
So all I need to do is make a character then and find a game right?
Learn the rules, make a character for practice, then find a game and make a character for that game.
Thatās about the minimum
Rules like what?
The rules of the game, like how statistics work, how things like combat, attacks, damage, etc is resolved
What your character can do, basic ability/skill checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
Indeed
So, for example, you don't get characters teleporting freely and jumping 300 feet, from creation
(Well, from low level creation)
Can you explain the modifiers bc I think ik abt the classes skill checks u have to roll and then that determans what happens but idk modifies core gameplay is like that campaign combat is a roll as well tho
The bigger your Ability Score, the bigger the Ability Modifier for it. The Modifier is what you add to d20 tests using the respective ability
-# holy im turning dyslexic
So combat isnāt just rolling to hit, thereās other parts too.
Rolling to hit crit chance and dmg amount right?
You also add your proficiency bonus if your character is proficient
Thatās only for basic weapon hits
Thereās movement, attacks of opportunity, reactions, actions, bonus actions, dodging, dashing
Among other things
Not to mention spells and saving throws
I understand that bit but I thought the dm just asks you to roll for it
A d20 test is only for some attacks
What's a saving through tho i could never figure out what that it
Itās a reactive measure to minimise damage. Like dodging a fireball, resisting a mental attack or resisting the effects of poison
Some attacks will call for the enemy to make a saving throw, while some will call for you to roll to hit the enemy
Ahh oki I get it now
I sometimes picture it like this: we may think that the attack roll is the only way to damage a creature. But in fact, there are 6 other ways to do so: saving throws, one for each ability.
Oh hi guys
Hey there!

Okay š
I wonāt lie
I was under the impression that this was like a roleplay server
I didnāt know there was a separate website
Yeah check out #find-a-game for that
Yeah, this is a "we talk about dnd" sever rather than a "we play dnd" server.
Donāt advertise or ask to join games outside of the looking for games channels (info in #find-a-game as mentioned earlier)
Ah
Oh I see, gotcha
Are samurai a thing?
And to this point: D&D is mostly a privately organized game. Imagine it like a board game. You get together with people for an evening to play a game.
(though there are also community games that are more organized than that, like Adventurer's League)
Yeah, it's a fighter subclass.
That does put a smile on my face
And you can reflavour many classes to be a samurai
Samurai donāt have to even be fighters
Wow, thereās a lot of creativity then, yeah?
Although less constrained than most board games. And it actually deserves the title of Role Playing Game, considering that Roleplay can actually happen. And as it is played on some kind of Table Top, this is how we get to the definition of Tabletop Roleplaying Game, or TTRPG
This is a lot to read right now
It is. So take your time and go at your own pace.
If youāre feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
Trying to describe the core flow of D&D is always... bumpy. But:
1: Bunch of people around a table, be it physically in real life, or a virtual metaphorical table.
2: DM describes what's going on. Player says they do something. Back and forth.
3: If a thing has debateable chance, like someone hitting or missing an attack, we need to resolve how it happens. (Anything in between the ease of "I turn the doorknob" and "i pet the dog", and the impossibility of "I jump to the moon" or "I ask the king to make me king instead", rolls are basically for something that isn't impossible for failure or success to happen)
3a: then we roll dice, and use the Statistics pre-established, to figure out what happens.
- Fun
4: ???
5: profit
Hi guys
this server is english only
Alfiz how do i ground a friend who laughs too much during sessions aka Just doesn't listen and make jokes but im from croatia so i odnt have many players to play with
So i only have those two people
One makes too many jokes one is ok
ask them to stop
or find online players, that can work too
at least it does for me and i dont even VC
Is there a specific lvl u can start multiclass or the dm has to allow it?
If you're playing 2014 it's an optional rule, so the GM has to allow it.
You can start with your second level, for a 1/1 split, if you really wanted.
But I would not recommend it for a newcomer.
But if i wanted too ,do i need to ask permission?
Personally it is still a "notify DM so they aren't completely caught off guard" thing
Depends on the rules you're using, as BelphƩgor eluded to. If you play with the 2014 version of D&D, it's an optional thing that the DM has to explicitly allow.
If you play with the most recent 2024 rules, it's just a thing that you can do when your character reaches a new level.
Though I do agree with what Auditor said.
Hi
quick question. when my character have a proficiency in acrobatic. that mean i get a bonus 1 in that skill right
No
Itās based on your level
That means you get a bonus equal to your proficiency bonus. At level 1 that's +2.
No, you get to add your Proficiency Bonus to any ability check using that skill. (which 99.99% of the time is a "Dexterity (Acrobatics) check")
You can see here how the proficiency bonus changes as you level up:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#CharacterAdvancement
ok thx!
How to play regularly if have no time?
text based
So basically rp?
just dnd in general text based
Oh, k
?tag new pbp
Nugget can agree with me, he's in one of my pbp campaigns
Technically not
yo I'm a first time DM (and player by extension) and im running a 5e game for 4 people. I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea on just how much stuff I need to prepare.
Right now I've got three major locations, a base, a pub, and a barracks, as well as a five room dungeon. Pub gives a side quest that leads to the dungeon. Planning to add another dungeon and a story encounter in a nearby forest. NPCs at the barracks are supposed to reveal information that leads to the forest encounter and the second dungeon. The plan is to have the campaign also take place in anothehr neighbouring town/city but nothing in this part of the campaign has been developed
Is this good for a session 1 or is perhaps too much? Should I be preparing the second half more so the game can start the next week without delay? That's all
That's enough for one session
Thatās plenty for session 1, as Belphegor said
thats enough for one session if not a bit more
Keep in mind that just the dungeon itself will already take up a lot of time.
alright cool
Good luck!
Well actually, prep a small list of names
For NPCās
Is this for like anyone in general or just my key npcs because everyone of importance is named
Not essential, but fairly helpful
or like if they pull someone out from a crowd and politely ask for their name
and idk who they are
Anyone in general, the party wonāt always know whoās important
just a few general names
āFloyd Carpenterā
āAsta Starcrestā
General names that fit your setting
An alternative to a name list is having a name generator open. There are plenty of these online.
Hello humans I'm new and I wanna play DND I already made a character sheet

Okay thanks
Good Morning from Hawaii, everyone.
Heya Guys, I'm completely new here. I only had the handbook for information source. Now I'm in the middle of making character in https://www.dndbeyond.com/ and I'm kinda confused about the background. Are the background on those options(Acolyte, Criminal, Soldier, Sage, Folk Hero, and Noble) are the only usable ones? And how custom background actually works?
I am even newer than you. I only played D&D (3.5). This D&D 5e version is very different than what I know. Hopefully, an experienced player will show up.
Unfortunately you gotta pay in order to have access to most options.
Anyway new players should check this out.
Ye ^ that should clarify a lot
I noticed that Acolyte is the only Cha based background, am I correct?
There are more background but like ham said
Aah. The money thing, correct? I just love capitalism.
Custom background aināt too hard to make
You can also look at more backgrounds you dont have access to on the dnd community wiki then replicate it into a custom background
Thank you Tac... I was curious if variant Human allows two origin feats of Magic Initiate? Say a Warlock with bard and druid for healing and food/water.
Hello! I am angel a pleasure to meet you all
Morning Angie. And Aloha.
if they are 2 different magic initiates then yes
but not 2 magic initiate bards
If you can't find a background that fits your idea, just find one that fits your character mechanically and make rename it something else. A common saying here is "flavor is free", flavor being the descriptive aspect of something as opposed to the actual numbers
Thank you Alfiz and TheOT. I appreciate the flexibility. It was always a bummer in D&D 3.5 to create awesome characters that die in the first encounters.
that was like the only thing i didnt like abt 3.5
Is there limits in character creation?
read the rules
God damn it
The game rules and anything the DM allows or disallows
you just need to read first
So true, Alfiz. This D&D 5e (2024) seems overly simplified repackaging. Still, I have a lot of free time now while I am on Work Comp.
its not even that mcuh reading, you can do it in like an hour??? only chapter 1 and what your character can do is important
Can anyone recommend a patient DM? I am located in Hawaii.
Of course. Thank you.
respond to #looking-for-players posts or make a #looking-for-dm post, for how to post check out #find-a-game
knoll iswtg tell me you read it
yeeeees
so what was your question
I'm just creating a character that will use shields as a weapon more like they will be tied to his hands as an armor part but can this character also use a "stick" thingy and do spells?
I mean
Shields with spikes?
That's what im asking, can a character use hands and also spells or nah?
