Most of my knowledge is like from Baldur's Gate…? But I know that some of the stuff in that game doesn’t work in actual dnd so I started watching a lot of DND. So if u like quizzed me on dnd I think I’ll pass. Probably 😏

A video that goes over the differences between how our version does it, and how it was adapted to the video game format.

The basics are the same, roll a d20 and add something, Strength and Wisdom and so on, saving throws and classes. There's just a few little tweaks that make it different.

Come up with a problem, like goblins have stolen chickens from a farm and run off. Figure a couple of obstacles, like maybe they laid some traps in the forest along their trail and broke the rope bridge. Then figure the details of the confrontation: where, why, who's there.

That's an adventure.

Guys ive got a question rq.
My bf and i played a little test round recently and since it was our first time creating a character for him we decided to follow whatever the internet says and roll stats.
He rolled a 20 on charisma (as a warlock) and i really dont know what to do now cause he kept saying he could just rizz everyone up or do whatever due to his INSANELY HIGH charisma stat.

How do i avoid him being basically op? And is it even okay to roll stats?
Also... is 20 the highest you can have at a stat?

austere hawk
#

20 isn't the highest you can get to if you have certain feats in your character creation

#

To avoid having it be op, you can either limit the talking with NPCs, just say no, or do what I do and have a safe word so if they go too far you can say a safe word and they would stop

Abilities

All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.

Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.

Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.

  • Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
  • Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
  • Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.

After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.

I think its probably important to clarify what you mean by "used for D&D" in this context. D&D Beyond and Roll20 are both very popular tools, but they serve different purposes, and are often used together. D&D is played in the imagination, not on a website or platform. Online tools like these make running the game easier, but they are entirely optional, and don't encompass the entirety of the game. They just streamline specific aspects of it

harsh fjord

If you don't have a DM, you're making a character for practice, so stick with Standard Array. Or Point-Buy if you want more customization.

still shale
#

If my character is horrible at something I can put him on 3, but if He’s average in a stat I put like 10, and his main stat I put like 17 is that it?

harsh fjord
#

Nope, you use one of the three methods above.

Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.

You don't just decide what numbers your character has, outside of the Point Cost method. Which itself has limits.

still shale
#

I don’t why but I loved that

edgy onyx
#

To be specific, lowest score you can have with point buy is 8, which costs 0 and is the "default" if not buying for that score

still shale
#

That’s a really cool thing to do

edgy onyx
#

Low scores can be fun to roleplay, which is one of the reasons people like to roll (other being getting big scores 😛 )

still shale
#

I think my favourite method is random lol

#

It looks funny

harsh fjord
#

DMs typically won't accept rolls they didn't witness, however.

edgy onyx
#

It has its risks, and not every DM allows it (especially without witnessing the rolls)

still shale
#

Like Imagine have like and absurd stat and then having a 3 in other

#

Actually

edgy onyx
#

I personally allow it, but I must witness the rolls and the player will be stuck with what they roll 😛

still shale
#

Uhhh like

harsh fjord
#

It happens. But I don't allow rolling stats at my tables. It makes for uneven play, and I want everyone at my table to have fun.

still shale
#

I don’t have a dice

#

What do I do?

harsh fjord
#

You can roll for dice on Google or other platforms.

edgy onyx
#

Though I am also a merciful DM, and won't just leave a player with terrible stats to suffer beyond the first few sessions of natural consequence. They'll be likely finding some magic item or boost to help them to at the very least get even with the party in some way 😛

still shale
#

An online dice? Ok, but then I have to send it to the dm right?

edgy onyx
#

Yep. Though most VTTs also show the roll to everyone automatically

versed quiver
#

Is 15 for strength just, bit more stronger than average

edgy onyx
#

And you'd have to send the physical result to the DM anyways

harsh fjord

It's quite a bit above average.

I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!

Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)

It's totally okay to use your proficiency and expertise that way if that's how you feel it best suits your character. However, if you've got two or more skills that use Charisma, it might be worth bringing it up.

High Charisma doesn't have to mean you're attractive or likable. It could mean you have a compelling way about you, a drive that brings others to your way of thinking, authoritative, commanding or menacing.

Have a look over it, don't worry too much about trying to read it all at once. Maybe try putting a character together once you find your feet. The key things to remember there are:

Hiya! I've been looking into some details regarding character creation; so far I've only ever played with the "preset" starting items but I am interested in the option to instead receive starting gold and spend that on effectively putting together your own equipment.

What I have been wondering about is a wizard's spellbook, which on its own already costs 50gp. The scholar's pack runs you another 40gp. This is already the sum of those two is already a lot higher than what I believe I could use in terms of gp to buy equipment myself. I've seen discussions about the spellbook in particular in regards to it being considered a "class feature" of wizards so you're supposed to get it either way, but people are not in agreement on that either.

How have other people handled wizards in the past?

echo kelp
#

So when starting out you can select your classes starting equipment or take the starting gold and purchase your equipment separately.

#

Which looks like:

Choose A, B, or C:
(A) Chain Mail, Greatsword, Flail, 8 Javelins, Dungeoneer’s Pack, and 4 GP;
(B) Studded Leather Armor, Scimitar, Shortsword, Longbow, 20 Arrows, Quiver, Dungeoneer’s Pack, and 11 GP;
or (C) 155 GP

#

As to wizards, they start out with the following:

Choose A or B: (A) 2 Daggers, Arcane Focus (Quarterstaff), Robe, Spellbook, Scholar’s Pack, and 5 GP; or (B) 55 GP

fresh light
#

Yeah; wizard gets 55gp to start as alternative, which doesn't even remotely cover the items you'd get if you chose the items themselves

hidden haven
#

I think the confusion might be that for some reason the starting package includes a spellbook, but Spellbook is also part of their spellcasting feature

fresh light
#

if I choose option B I'd be spending 50 out of the 55gp on a spellbook, so why would I ever pick B? unless I have the spellbook in both cases

honest mountain
#

Because maybe you don’t want a spell book

fresh light
#

Don't you need one as a wizard?

echo kelp
#

Most folks pick the starting equipment

#

It usually gets you more from the start

signal pendant
#

Hey everyone,
I really like the idea of it – the creativity, the fantasy worlds, but when I watch campaigns on YouTube, I often enjoy the first hour and then I start to lose focus or feel a bit bored. I get excited for worldbuilding and character, then just something snaps afte one hour.
I’ve never actually played D&D myself and trying to learn, so I’m not sure if this means it’s not for me, or if it would feel very different when I’m actually playing with other people instead of just watching other people playing?
I really love watch fantasy movies/series and read fantasy book sometime (I pretty much love my favorite genre is fantasy)
I don’t mean this in a negative way at all – I’m just curious if anyone else has felt the same way, and how different it was for you once you started playing?

merry cobalt
#

I dont understand how this works like you have 2 cantrips right then when you pick like some spell of tome you now have 5 skills? or some? does it works like a cantrip or a skill

#

i been researching and still cant understand stuff

echo kelp
#

Okay as a spellcaster, your class table tells you how many cantrips and level spell slots you have as well as spells known.

merry cobalt
#

but when I edit your background you like have another additional skill does that stack or someting?

#

also like I choose Eldritch Blast as my cantrip but then next I choose like Pact of Tome which I choose Eldritch Blast again? Does that stack or something?

#

character sheet be feeling like im solving advanced mathematics

echo kelp
#

No - you only get the spell once (although leveled spells can be upcast).

#

You have the spell once, you can use appropriate spell slots to cast it.

#

To cast a spell you need to have an available and appropriate spell slot, the components to cast the spell, and to have the spell prepared.

merry cobalt
#

So I put Eldtrich Blast as one of my cantrips I cant use it while I have it in Pact of Tome?

echo kelp
#

If you already have eldritch blast as a cantrip, there's no point in taking it again

merry cobalt
#

So it doesnt stack?

#

i see

echo kelp
#

No - taking a spell twice has no effect

merry cobalt
#

I though I can use the eldritch blast cantrip then use the eldtiruch blast in the pact of tome

echo kelp
#

No - as you can only use the Magic Use action (casting a spell) once per turn.

merry cobalt
#

ah ok

#

also in the character sheet I cant fully understand the Class Features

#

weapon mastery or someth like that?

#

Eldritch Master?

#

Its all exp here right? just the same as RPGs?

echo kelp
#

So in 2024, certain weapons have masteries (little bonuses) that can be used to improve a weapon's effect that are unlocked by character classes that are proficient in that kind of weapon.

#

That's a weapon mastery

#

Give me a moment to look up Eldritch Master - usually a class feature explains what it does.

#

So for the Eldritch Master feature it does this:

When you use your Magical Cunning feature, you regain all your expended Pact Magic spell slots.

#

So when you use your Magical Cunning class feature, you regain all of your spell slots

merry cobalt
#

So magical cunning is a skill? or is that like innate in the character

echo kelp
#

Magical Cunning is a warlock class feature

merry cobalt
#

so its innate in the warlock like do i need to cast it or its automatic?

echo kelp
#

It's a class feature innate to the Warlock class when they reach level 2

#

Level 2: Magical Cunning
You can perform an esoteric rite for 1 minute. At the end of it, you regain expended Pact Magic spell slots but no more than a number equal to half your maximum (round up). Once you use this feature, you can’t do so again until you finish a Long Rest.

lavish kayak
merry cobalt
#

ah ok ok so it doest count as a skill in combat?

#

is doesnt count as a movement or attack yes?

lavish kayak
echo kelp
#

It would fall under the Action but that particular feature is not great for combat

smoky adder
merry cobalt
#

can I cast it outside of combat while in exploration?

lavish kayak
merry cobalt

deft sigil
deft sigil
#

if you don't have a DM yet, going with Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) would make life simplest

wheat crystal
#

A few reasons:

  • Constitution is arguably the only stat no character wants to “dump” (make the lowest). It determines your max HP, so a low Con means you’re at a larger risk of dying. It also determines your Constitution saving throw, which is both a common save to have to make and is important in keeping up some of your spells that require concentration.
  • Paladin effectively never uses the Intelligence stat.
  • Dexterity is arguably as important as Constitution to the average character, but generally due to the Paladin’s typical gameplay loop (melee) you’re going to be taking hits so being able to survive more (higher Con) is better than say going first in initiative (higher Dex). There’s a few other benefits to high Dexterity but you probably won’t encounter them if you’re playing a classical Paladin build (i.e. Str/Con/Cha priority)
stoic socket
deft sigil
# raven pebble Okey thank you

you can place those numbers in whichever ability you like (for instance, as a druid, Wisdom is one of your most important scores, so having the 15 there might be helpful)

wheat crystal
# stoic socket https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/PlasticNotCool_152374740.pdf also I messag...

That's a lot better! As a final recommendation I do suggest swapping your Int and Wis scores. As before, Paladin doesn't really use Intelligence for anything.

For Wisdom, Paladin also technically has no features that interact with it, but Wisdom saves are another common save that particularly affect melee-oriented characters. This is because Wis saves are often made against "shutdown" effects like Charm, Stun, Paralyzed, etc that can effectively remove you from play

neon kelp
#

newcomer here and IM on DNDbeyond looking up the rules and stuff and even building your character seems overwhelming

wheat crystal

It certainly can be! My advice is to take it slow and only focus on the parts that interest you past the basics (Part 1 of the Basic Rules). No need to learn how Druid works if you want to play a Wizard, for example

I have done many DNDs as a player often with the same DM who is my friend, with other friends online, but I'm still not fully used to it all as we used some minimized apps, I was just wondering what character sheets applications do people use for their campaign or are there more optimal ones to use?

wheat crystal
#

I usually recommend D&DBeyond to start since it conveniently integrates the official books (assuming at least 1 person owns a given book and 1 person owns a Master Tier subscription for content sharing)

#

Depending on your VTT you might find it better to use the native character sheet it provides if it does (e.g. roll20).

#

Digital PDF is also a good option especially if you use homebrew, though it is the most labor intensive both to create and run (since it’s essentially the same as using a physical sheet)

forest yew
wheat crystal
#

The DM doesn’t have to be the one to own the content nor a subscription iirc. As long as anyone in the campaign has the subscription and anyone has the relevant book(s) the DM just has to have content sharing turned on in the campaign settings.

  1. The 20-sided dice is used to determine if an action succeeds or fails. The others are for healing and damage, mainly.
  2. A session does usually take anywhere between 2-5 hours (or more). The DM describes a situation. Players decide what they want to do. Dice are rolled to determine success/failure. Repeat.
  3. Nope, just the ones relevant to your character.
  4. 5e=fifth edition, the current version of the game. Each version has different rules and options.

While there is official lore, there's not really a set story outside of the official hardcover adventures. Some folks love 'em; some don't. It's really up to you and your group.

Personally, I don't think a new DM should both run the game and design an adventure from scratch. Too much to juggle in my view. But it can be done!

Sure, it's all made up; you can do whatever fits your table. I just think it's raising the bar to learn how to run the game and design content without prior experience.

then as you play keep those thoughts in mind, putting you the player in your characters shoes (NOT your shoes, theirs) and react how they would. That does NOT mean it has to be how you would react (although it can be lol)

# tidal patrol Does anyone have any tips before I get into roleplay as player. I might eventual...

I'm in the same boat as you. Just got into DnD a little over a month ago and it's taken over me🤣. If I can give you tips that I've gathered:

  • Leverage this discord. Community is amazing and helpful and welcoming to new players. They have been a huge help for me.

  • Set up a DND Beyond account and review the basic rules that you get for free.

  • Also on DND Beyond, experiment with the character creation with what sounds fun to you (just note unless you actually purchased the digital books on there, you'll be limited to selecting what is available in the basic core rules)

  • There's some great resources you can listen to and watch outside of here as well. I just discovered The Dungeoncast and it's been interesting and helpful.

  • If you haven't already, buy the Players Handbook. I own both 2014 and 2024 and I have found the newest one streamlines things a bit more easily for beginners (IMO); Note if you sign up for DND Beyond, you can get it digitally.

The most important tip: HAVE FUN with all of it 🙌

They are established by what you assign to your ability scores

#

exotic remnantBOT

Write the modifier next to each of your scores.

harsh fjord
# manic wyvern Id feel bad idk anything about anything lol, feel like im holding people back

Well, if you're trying to join a table with strangers, you can do your best to learn the rules (at least the basics) prior to the game. In fact, you'll stand a better chance of being invited if you do some learning first rather than expecting the table to teach you, unless they're explicitly advertised as a tutorial.

Besides reading the rules, you can watch games on YouTube and Twitch and/or sign up for a learn-to-play session during the virtual weekends (see the server's Events tab).

echo kelp

At level 1, after generating your ability scores (again see #dnd-newcomers message for the 3 ways to generate ability scores) you decide where to allocate that score.

After that, you can't re-allocate them or change them but at certain levels you can gain new ability score points to assign.

Feel free to ask questions

twilit trench
#

Hello

#

i got a question

#

how do i make a character?

#

like do i make one thats like me?

ebon copper
#

I spin a wheel and make a character based on that, but i'm also indecisive.

#

Id say look up each class and race and see which one calls to you the most

#

You can use a pdf character sheet or use an online website to make a character, everyone has their preferences

wheat crystal
twilit trench
#

Okay

wheat crystal
#

As for the format of the character sheet you use, you can use the official one here.

Otherwise D&DBeyond has a character creator with the Basic Rules already integrated. If you use the latter my recommendation is to skip the first page of the creator since it's mostly comprised of content toggles that will be dependent on your DM.

twilit trench
#

i saw that one

#

are there name restrictions?

wheat crystal
#

Not sure what you mean

twilit trench
#

like names that i cant use

wheat crystal
#

You can name your character whatever you want

#

D&DBeyond should have a generous character limit, though I'm not sure how long it is exactly.

twilit trench
#

ok

#

idk what do i do with the background

wheat crystal
#

I do recommend you choose a character name that isn't incredibly difficult to pronounce, or if so have a nickname your character can go by.

#

Your character's choice of background is a mechanical summation of the most formative or relevant part of your character's backstory in relation to your skills

twilit trench
#

can i have my charisma score like 8?

wheat crystal
# twilit trench like do i make one thats like me?

As for this, you certainly can make a character inspired by yourself. It can make the character easier or more convenient to roleplay. However it can make it harder to avoid character bleed, so just be careful of that.

wheat crystal
twilit trench
#

how many score points do i have max?

wheat crystal
#

It's not so much a sum to assign as there are 3 ways to generate your ability scores, found here in the Basic Rules.

twilit trench
#

do i need a 20 dice?

wheat crystal
#

As you can see the standard array has an 8 in it by default. Point Buy has all stats start at 8 then you can purchase increases up to a limit. Rolled may just generate an 8 as a result of 4d6 drop lowest.

#

And yeah, a d20 is the most common dice to use for stuff in the game. You don't need a physical one however, plenty of online dice rollers exist or are integrated into various D&D applicatons. D&DBeyond's digital character sheet, google, and many VTTs (Virtual Tabletops) have dice rollers integrated as an example

twilit trench
#

whats a 4d6

wheat crystal
#

For the format of "XdY"

  • X = the number of dice
  • Y = the number of sides

So 4d6 means roll 4 6-sided dice

twilit trench
#

so i rolled a 4 in a 6 dice?

wheat crystal
#

You roll 4 of them

twilit trench
#

and then i add them all together?

wheat crystal
#

The official method as per the link I sent is "4d6 drop lowest". So you would remove the lowest roll from the sum

#

So for example if I rolled (4, 5, 4, 2) I would remove the 2 for a score of 4+5+4 = 13

twilit trench
#

can i test it out?

#

6,4,4,5

wheat crystal
#

That roll would result in a score of 15

#

That being said I don't recommend Rolled stats if you haven't found a campaign yet. DMs set the method players use for stat generation. If they choose Rolling, then it is almost exclusively done under their supervision as an anti-cheating measure

#

Instead I recommend either Standard Array or Point Buy

twilit trench
#

ok

#

is there a rule for point or array

wheat crystal
twilit trench
#

ok

#

i kinda understand

#

when can i play my 1st game?

wheat crystal
#

If you feel like you're ready and want to dive into groupfinding using this server check out the instructions in #find-a-game

twilit trench
#

when do i make my character?

wheat crystal
#

You can do it whenever you want. Making a character is a great way to practice learning the rules. Some people like to make characters before joining a campaign, some make them after.

If you’re planning on being a DM then I’d say you’d want to read more but you don’t have to be as in depth on any particular topic. Starting out for example, you should have a general idea of how the key features of your players’ classes function (e.g. Sneak Attack, Rage) but you don’t need to know say, every spell that a Wizard gets or what Brutal Critical does. That level of knowledge will be more naturally and conveniently learned as you play more of the game

# runic sparrow Whats like, the best tips you can give to a first time dm, im a little nervious ...
  • Don't commit to a full campaign right away. Try a smaller adventure—doesn't have to be a one-shot, but saying "We're gonna play together for the next few weeks/months/years" before you know if the group gels is a tall order.
  • Pick players whom you get along with, who will make time for it as a priority, and who want similar things out of play.
  • Run a prewritten instead of making it up from scratch. That lessens your load.
  • Read up on session zero and run one prior to the game: the discussion allows everyone to calibrate their expectations and communicate preferences so the table as a whole is on the same page.

Those are some of my off-hand ideas.

Well, you can’t create a character on D&D beyond with that subclass. The D&D rulebooks are books. You if you have a legal way to read those books other than purchasing them on D&D Beyond (such as borrowing it from a friend or renting it from a library) then you can would be able to use that content on non-automated character sheets, like pen and paper or typing in a PDF.
