But it also depends on what you mean by fighter, as there are multiple ways to fight.
maybe ask DM if you can also wildshape without shapechanging only statblock change
I solved that by making friends with a bunch of other DMs so we alternate
And firmly requesting that players try it after awhile
i’d like to use a great sword if possible but if it’s not possible to use a big weapon and cast spells then just a regular sword
greatsword can be done
That does sound more like a ranger
hmmm okay thank you guys
Hello there
i got a group and im suppper excited for it took 3 months just to play my first one hope it works out
i hope so too
idk how to do dnd yet im pretty new but yeah idk how many aspects work yes i saw the thingy i say but i have trouble understanding what i read in some cases
need any help/explaining?
yes pls
okay, with what do you need help?
firstly character creation like what does the sheet stuff mean and the rules on it and stuff like the backstory of my character idk if i can make it custom i use aurora to create it
ok, i dont know aurora but backstory you can completely make up
do keep level in mind tho
then what do i use to create it
like at level 1 you havent been slaying dragons
keep using aurora if you want
so stay lvl one in first sesh till dnd says lvl up or smt?
and also can be for more then 1 session
lol sorry auto correct ssayd dnd so much
and dice?
What about them?
i have a full set but idk what to use of them
d4, d6, d8, d10 and d12 are for damage/healing, and d20 is for attacks, checks, saves, everything
Also it's worth checking with your DM about the backstory to see if they have specific information they want/any restrictions
oki
anything else?
only starting equipment
only if you get them from your class
what class you play?
well idk the classes and races very well
soooo you havent chosen one?
only made test sheets but didnt understand
okay
well we have a long way to go
yes
so there are 12 classes
races or classes
Barbarian
Bard
Cleric
Druid
Fighter
Monk
Paladin
Ranger
Rogue
Sorcerer
Warlock
Wizard
Artificer
all the classes
oh 13 if you include artificer
druid id like thats nature type right
then druid
and you can make every class nature themed
whats ranger
id like to be smt like to use nature at my advantage
that can be done with any class
but ranger would be best
oky then that one sounds cool
What is a Ranger?
A Ranger is a wilderness expert. They’re skilled at survival, hunting, and scouting. Think of them as adventurers who live between civilization and the wilds. They combine combat ability with tracking, nature magic, and animal companions.
Core Ranger Features
Versatile Combat: Can fight with bows (ranged) or swords/axes (melee).
Favored Enemy / Natural Explorer: They’re especially good at hunting specific types of creatures and navigating wild terrain.
Spells: Gain limited nature magic (healing, detection, utility).
Animal Companion (optional): Can bond with a beast ally to fight beside them.
Skilled Scout: Great at sneaking, tracking, and survival tasks.
Ranger Playstyle
Role in Party: Striker + Scout. You deal steady damage and provide tracking/exploration support.
In Combat: Pick off enemies with arrows or harass them with mobility and precision.
Out of Combat: You shine when navigating wilderness, spotting danger, or tracking enemies.
Tips for New Players
Choose Your Weapon Style: Decide early if you want to specialize in archery (bows) or two-weapon fighting (dual blades).
Lean Into Exploration: Your abilities make you the party’s pathfinder—embrace scouting and leading the way.
Don’t Forget Spells: Even though you’re not a wizard, spells like Hunter’s Mark or Cure Wounds are powerful tools.
Animal Companion: If you like having a pet ally, go Beast Master. If not, you can focus more on damage.
ranger explanation @worthy hound
ooo coool lovin it already
Oh, do you know whether you're using the 2024 rules or the 2014 ones? Ranger didn't really change theme, but it'll affect how you build them
Ok, so is there any reason why I can't cast guidance on myself each time I attack?
it takes an action
and its ability check not attack
no idk all ik is the story
so ask them
You'll want to ask the DM about that too then, yeah
oky
any more questions?
I thought ability checks include rolling to hit?
im good now thx yo uguys ill tell you how it goes tommorow
kay
@lavish kayak I don't have a group yet, but my university has a D&D club! There is also a comic book store that will offer a new players day on 9-14-2025! As for the Rogue, I've been wanting to use my favorite anime character, Arsène from Persona 5, as practice for making a D&D character sheet! I want to give him the Rogue with the Arcane Trickster subclass!
@sick vale Yep, even the Player's Handbook says the Fighter and Rogue have low complexities! I've heard that the Arcane Trickster subclass for the Rogue involves Wizard spells, so I'll have to look at how spells work or choose a different subclass for it!
cool!
let me know how it went

What has a higher chance of higher damage? 2d6 or 1d12?
2d6
*2d6 has more consistent damage
2d6 has a lower chance of higher damage, but a higher average of damage
thats what i meant
I am somewhat new to DnD as a whole, though I've wanted to play it since I was a teenager. There aren't any open groups near me that are accepting new players, and the one group I was with kicked me out for "hostile conversation" as they called it. Where would folks recommend I start looking for online groups to join so I can start using my dice?
If you have any friends that have a dnd group it’s always easiest to look there
Hello all, I am interested in joining a campaign and have been checking out the looking for players section but am A) unable to find anything that fits my schedule or B) finding something thats not already filled up. I reached to one of them the other day but never got a response. Would I need an entire party to post in the looking for DM or would being a solo be fine?
I currently have no friends because my mother and I just moved to a new town with less than 1000 people in it and I know 0 of them. And I'm in the middle of job hunting, which is pain because I don't like most people...
I'm biting the bullet and looking for online groups to play with since it's not likely I'll find a group to join up with physically.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Well the thing that just popped up quite conveniently might help you
You can be a single player looking for a DM, but you're probably better off looking to see the open games in #looking-for-players.
I'll take a look.
This stuff might also help you
Alright, thank you good sir
hey hello im a new player can anyone help me with anything? i only have dndbeyond basic rules, is it good enough for now to join any game?

Arcane trixter is a realy easy spellcaster to go for
I think they get like highest 3rd level spells (compared to the 9 levels of spells in the game)
U will mostly be using booming blade and green flame blade
hii!!
hey any newbie interesting playing please dm me (message) and anyone want to be dm (referee one) also dm me (message)
Check the DMs looking for players in #looking-for-players .
Yes it's enough most of the time. Your GM may share books with you so you have more character options
Also there’s #looking-for-community for other D&D community servers that may have a variety of different D&D games available.
thank you sooo much
Finding a group for a social game like this may be hard for you, since you don't like most people.
I have rather... high expectations. Since it seems difficult for people to be adults about situations these days.
The hostile conversation part makes more sense now
Not fly off the handle about the smallest little things.
They called it hostile conversation. I was just pointing out that there's a certain musician I dislike because of her own religious affiliation and what it means for the group she joined.
Ok
where can i find an upcoming game or games for a newbie
To use this server to find a group check #find-a-game !
i have both dnd character and roll 20
Ah, dang it. My post couldn't be loaded because it discussed religion.
That’s called a hostile conversation lol
I wasn't being hostile towards them though. Just pointing out that I don't like the singer.
I'd have been fine being kicked from the group if I'd been hostile towards them. Holding a conversation and talking about a person shouldn't count as "triggering".
I think this is a little outside of the scope of D&D.
Regardless, I hope you find a group you vibe with.
I do too cause I like playing DnD.
The first game I bought when I got a PS5 was Baldur's Gate 3.
and this is related to newcomers because?
Ello
hii
Cause BG3 is basically DND on console.
How are you
The dice rolls to do actions, the classes are all DnD classes... so on and so on.
thank you how are you
Good how about you
BG3 has a lot of little differences to D&D 5e, and that’s not taking into account the social aspect.
and it is totally irrelevant to newcomers thing. or maybe i misunderstand what newcomer is.
Let us move on.
This channel is to help new to D&D folks get started with the core game rules and mechanics (as always check the channel descriptions or see #channel-guide )
guess no dnd for me tn kinda dissapointed
ooof
why not lol
idk if they meant next week but they asked me today so i guess im not welcome or smt
oh you are in a group that miscommunicated? I am sorry to hear that
they said 6cst every friday so i would assume today
i wanna play a dnd sesh but every group just never happens
That happens a lot with groups where players don't know each other
Yeah being a minor does make it harder to join random internet D&D groups with all the social/legal issues surrounding being a minor/protecting minors.
You might see if local game stores or libraries in your area host D&D games
if i went out i might have a group
Play with your IRL friends or family. An easy way is for you to be the DM.
its not that easy
You may also want to check out #looking-for-community for other D&D servers that may have more games you can possibly join, including more open-ended Westmarch games, one-shots, etc.
Yep, the hardest part is finding a group
ill just not play nobody ik would play as dm plus i hv no experience i just wanna hv fun
Hey so I’m like really new but how do I join a campaign?
You can use our Looking For Game channels to find a group/game to join. See #find-a-game to learn more about how to use our LFG channels.

Feel free to reach out to them in private message if they're open for that or use their LFG post's thread to communicate.
I wish I could dm them they’ve it set to off
Yeah - see if they have an LFG post up in #looking-for-dm and use that to message them
Will do
Hello! I hope y’all are doing good! Is there a moderator around that I could speak to?
Go to #moderator-support and simply state, "Can I speak with a moderator?" and when one of us is available and has bandwidth, we'll create a private thread to discuss the matter
Awesome! Thank you!!!
hey, I don't understand how spell slots work, do you have a certain amount of each level for each spell level or is it just spell slots and different level spells cost more or less spell slots and where do i keep track of spell slots
Its quite confusing at first but once you understand it, its quite easy.
Spell slots will have a certain amount per level of spells which can be consumed to cast a spell of that level, you can also consume spell slots of a higher level than that spell but not lower. Some spells will have something called upcasting where if a higher level spell slot is used, it grants additional effects.
Each spell will only consume one spell slot per cast.
You keep track of your spell slots on your character sheet and can mark them off as you use them.
Heya is there a way to play using the Dnd Tarot cards I've been thinking of ways on how to make a solo campaign out of it
If this is not allowed here just tell me im fairly new to the game 🥹
this is allowed here, but with tarot cards you'd have to make a new system for what the cards mean, and solo campaigns are very doable, but most people play with other people
Oooo the cards have an indicatedd meaning below the actual meaning of the cards but it's like uhh a deck of many things typa thing.
Fortune tellinf cards also sounds fun at the end of the day that's why I wannago dmless since I don't have many friends
can you give me a link or smth?
Just look up dungeons and dragons tarot made by wizards of the coast
that is not something for a whole campaign, maybe for a random encounter but not an actual story
You'll have to brew your own mechanics for it. There are GMless modules out there but none of them use the tarot as far as I'm aware.
I'll try to do that
It will be a heklof a job but i think it'd gonna be Worth it
i can help with that
Thank you 🌿
and also there are some free solo modules out there
like this one https://www.artemis-tabletop.com/gamebooks/g001
Wooo I'll check it out though i really like a tarot based campaign though :((
i will help with that
but try this first
or any other solo module
I think I have the set you're talking about. IIRC it was just given a brief description as being used for guidance, like helping a DM make a random encounter or influence the course of the campaign. Still doesn't exactly seem like a replacement for a DM in any case.
So it still falls back to the solo module Alfiz showed
Awee that's sad
i made a tarot system for him

Thank you!
Need some advice pls, I wanted to play Leonin, Yuan-Ti or Deep Gnome. But the DM gives me the feeling he allows only humans/core races...
Because all other are not lore accurate or joke characters in his words....
Even if I say they're adopted and has nothing to do with the original culture. He still ignoring it.
I am one step to leave the campaign... What should I do or how I gona handle it?
rock gnome is a core race and definitely not a joke race, just ask them
and if you dont feel good with it just leave/talk to the DM
As general advice, you build a character that works in the world the DM is putting down. There may be room for negotiation, as Alfiz says, but it's their game to host. It's up to you whether you see a restriction as a deal-breaker.
Deep Gnomes and Rock Gnomes are not the same thing.
i know but rock gnome is still a 2014 race
hello
But weird is he allowed from our group an Edglord Human Char, that his parents died, and he joined a evil cultist gang and learned bloody cleric spells and then the dude marriaged a noble lady to became a rich noble... sounds like a chocolate pizza with sauerkraut on top....
So, a human? I'm not quite seeing how that relates to your issue.
okay so new here, how in the world this game work??? like i know i need to make a character but im genualy lost in the soup

oh
behold. the sauce.
Putting a character together needs three elements: class, species and background. Pick those first from the Free Rules. There are no wrong choices.
(dragonborn is obviously the right choice. i am not biased.)
free rules? oh god what did i jump into
a great game! take your time, look through the rules. they are a little hard to grasp at first, but experience and a good group to play with will help with understanding (from my experience.)
Quick one guys should I buy the digital players handbook or the hardcover?
whichever one suits you lol
Fair enough
my brain melting outa my ears from all this rules and things
if you want a quick breakdown of things i am happy to provide. they can be a lot
yeah okay why not
Hardcover is yours to keep, spill coffee on, take to a friend's house.
Digital is a license for an online product that offers integration with various services such as D&D Beyond and VTTs.
I don't use hardcovers for my actual games but I buy them because I like the feel of physical books
Buy physical and then WOTC can’t take it away from you.
My campaign is online over discord but I was going to use a physical character sheet as I think id prefer that
So I think I'll go for the hard cover
As long as you provide an image for your DM and don't mind adding up your numbers yourself, go for it.
Bear in mind that some GMs don't like physical character sheets, so best ask them
They use a dice roll app on discord
My dm said he's fine with it
so usually you start with making a character.
Characters are composed of 3 main 'parts'. Species, Background, and Class.
Your Species will give you some abilities, such as the ability to see in the dark for example, and determine your general appearance and sometimes what language you speak.
Your Background will give you an idea of who you are and where you are from. Are you a criminal? A noble? An artisan? Each will give you some skills related to itself. It can be a general skill, a language, or a tool.
You Class is part of who you are, and will determine what you can do in and out of combat with passive and active abilities. Are you a sneaky rogue, a charismatic bard, a strong barbarian or skilled fighter? How do you like to fight? Do you like keeping some distance with your enemies and cast spells from afar? Or get up close and personal and smack em in the face?
The mix of these three aspects makes the base of a character.
oh my you been typing for like 5min strait
been trying to find the right way to explain things lol
(i am french too but i learned this game in english)
you french too?
yep
hell yeah
been living in australia for like 10 years though lmao
but i do speak french with my family and such
but yeah, i find it easier to explain in english. is it easy enough to understand?
i can expand on stuff if you need.
usually you'd make a d&d beyond account and start there! personally i use a manual sheet because i play with player-made content a lot, but start on the website as they explain to you what does what generally (i think theres a tutorial?)
d&d beyond? but uhm okay ima look
yep thats the one
ok

hey im new and want to know which dnd edition should i play? i dont really like the "modern" editions and would like to play old school editions like bx ,becmi ,1e and 2e and i have a concern that not alot of people play these editions and maybe just sticking with 5e would be better for finding people to play with
youre definitely gonna have an easier time with 5e
But if u look in the channel list there is one for older editions. I just don’t remember what it is lol
If you’re looking into those, you might do a better job looking into the Old School Roleplaying community. They’ve made many games based on the old editions (specifically BECMI and 1e) but with less clunk. Also there’s probably more people playing them.
okay thanks everyone
hello i am new and i am wondering if its possible to have my half orc character be a sorcerer and guild artisan

?tag new paladin
Paladin
Smite foes and shield allies with divine and martial might
Paladins are united by their oaths to stand against the forces of annihilation and corruption. Whether sworn before a god’s altar, in a sacred glade before nature spirits, or in a moment of desperation and grief with the dead as the only witnesses, a Paladin’s oath is a powerful bond. It is a source of power that turns a devout warrior into a blessed champion.

?Tag artificer
No tag artificer found.
?tag new artificer
No tag artificer found in category new.
Not sure if Artificer has a Dyno post associated with it
Since it’s not part of the Basic/Free Rules
If you own or otherwise have access to the content that contains Artificer you can head to its class page which should tell you all of the needed information outside of the recommended stat spread
In which case you can basically copy the Wizard’s recommended spread, though you might want to allocate more points into Strength or Dexterity depending on subclass (i.e. if you pick Armorer or Battlesmith)
That's the point I was looking for. My DM gave me 15 stats points to distribute around due to being more of a mystery kind of story and less combat oriented.
After the rolls and everything else
As in 15 extra stat points on top of rolling?
Exactly.
What did you roll?
15 15 17 16 14 13... I kinda high rolled on the dice luckily
You honestly have enough to max out most of your stats, especially after background bonuses.
I used the spread as str Dex, cons int wis and chr
Do you have an idea of what subclass you were going to go for?
I was recommended to go for an artificer dwarf mark of warding. The subclass was recommended to do an artillerist due to the perks of my ideas. But since I know that there won't be much combat I think as an alchemist/ flavoured chemist.
Also due to the nature of the character I think it fits.
Perfectly fine! I don’t believe I saw it, but do you know if your DM is running 2014 or 2024 rules?
I think it's 2014 rules but we can pick something of pathfinder.
Pathfinder’s a completely separate game from D&D.
I can’t make recommendations based off of Pathfinder since that’s an entirely different TTRPG, and incompatible with 5e without some adaptations that I assume your DM made up. It seems you have a good-ish grasp of the rules so if you want more option recommendations instead of know-how on how the system works I recommend asking more in #character-discussion
That being said with what you rolled I recommend a:
- 13 / 15 / 16 / 17 / 15 / 14
After applying your species bonuses it’ll come out to:
- 13 / 15 / 18 / 18 / 15 / 14
Then using your DM’s homebrew rules with the extra 15 points I recommend putting 5 into Dex, 4 into Wis, and 2 into Con/Int/Cha for a final spread of:
- 13 / 20 / 20 / 20 / 19 / 16.
I recommend leaving Wisdom at 19 until level 4 so you can pick up the Resilient (Wisdom) feat
Welcome! I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!
Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)
About of pathfinder I think it's like some skills or something like it's somewhat compatible with the class. Also I start at lvl 4 and I don't know what should I do about the feat.
She was able to rework if needed
yo is dnd better for my brain then any video game
Regardless of what your DM says Pathfinder won’t be compatible without some sort of homebrew. And yeah if you’re starting level 4 then you should be able to select it in place of taking an ability score improvement
i never play dnd i heard it a good game and can even teach you social skills and also better for your brain then any video game
Thanks ... For the skills I get insight and persuasion. I get 3 ... I think I should get arcana and medicine. What should I get more?
Hey
I get deception, history , investigation, nature, religion and sleight of hands
Pick which you think fit your character
D&D is certainly a great way to socialize. I’m not sure if it’s a better “brain trainer” compared to the video game medium as a whole, but you can definitely refine a good amount of basic math skills
video game are often considrred brainrot
i see many people who dont play games how video game can shrink your brain and also addictive
You have mentioned this talking point before. This server is meant for discussions about d&d not video games in general.
Also, you can find articles on either side that give benefits and negatives to video games. Worthy to note that too much of pretty much anything can be detrimental eventually.
Does Dnd have video games? or is it only like balders gate 3
Because I was only aware of the ttrpg
Yup there's been lots of games
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2, Planescape Torment, the MMORPGs.
Gotcha
Is there any way I can learn the 2024 rules of dnd other than in person games?
it would be really weird to only have a single game and it be part 3
Reading the free basic rules is probably the best place to start and then looking for in-person or online games
You can play any version of D&D, just depends on which one you enjoy and then finding a game that is running it
if you're looking for an online group, I'd check in #find-a-game about how to make the post
I'm completely new to all this right, I'm looking to try it out. What do I actually need to do to get started?

hi. what version is it? 5e with 2014 and 2024 rules?
There's more than just 5E 2014, 2024 but most people play the 5E versions, just depends on if they have converted to 2024 from 2014
But you can find people playing Basic, 2nd, 3rd & 3.5 or 4th edition still too
If you're currently looking for a game, you're most likely to find people playing 2014 or 2024 5E
i think i want to hear what the blend is because things do differ between the two versions and i do like the idea
ooooh ok
interesting
i may need to see in that in action tbh
We mix the 2 rulesets in our campaigns in a similar fashion
Hello
Is there anything I can do to determine if something is technically alive or living? (We found a magical egg thing, with a glowing orb inside it) Btw I am a third level druid
i dont know of any spells that a 3rd level druid can access that would identify that sort of thing
however hmo here
if you still have it upon reaching level 8 you could cast locate creature (4th level spell) and name the egg thingy. if its in 1000 ft of you and is a creature youll know exactly where it is, and now know that it is in fact a creature (if it is, in fact, a creature)
i wish there was a way to filter finding a dnd campaign in the "looking for players" tab
how do i pick my stats or whatever
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
How do i properly multiclass? do dms hate multiclassing?
ive heard they hate homebrews...
Depends on the DM. Some might not want people to multiclass but it is part of the game and is in the rules
Homebrew is the same. It depends on the DM. Homebrew can sometimes be weaker or way more powerful than the standard rules so it's best to run it by your DM to see if it's allowable.
DMs don't hate multi-classing if it is done properly. Me, I'm old school and look at multi-class as a non-human class option. But with how the new newer rules are written, multi-classing is difficult to deal with.
okay thanks
Is it normal for people to leave a campaign?
Depends
because people left this campaign to the point the DM doesn't want to continue,
Were they disruptive to the game, or just not interested in the game? Or was the DM organized/disorganized? I mean, why did they leave the game? Was it because of issues within the game?
they all left because they had life problems and probably not interested in the game. Our DM was organized.
Well, real life will always take precedent over a game, in my opinion. You, your group and DM should be patient. Look for new players to fill in the spots. Just be aware that not everyone will be a match for your group.
yeah thank you for the answers
So is it an in person group or an online group? Online is easier to fill the open spots in a group. But, again in my opinion, in person provides a better game experience.
it an online group and my DM said that they are gonna take a break or stop this campaign.
Frustrations can happen, and cause issues. Your DM may need to to take a break to work out the frustrations of players leaving the game. Give it a minute to see what happens.
yeah I hope they DM again
I hope for you that they do.
thanks
hey guys!! whats up
hi
can my character have completely new status effects like for example: I hit a enemy with a attack that leaves them with a "marked" effect and now each time I targeted them I get more damage or buffs.
I'm extremely new to d&d and I'm interested in it, will definitely start doing once I figure a schedule out.
if your DM allows it, of course! 'marked' is just hunters mark/hex
Also can there be completly custom classes, idk if theres items in the game for characters with pre-set items to use, im kinda treating dnd as a rpg where you can roleplay in it....
(Like final fantasy but if you could reverse suplex sephirot or something(
you can homebrew anything! I do reccomend you either get something from the internet/ask me as a first time player, also ask your DM
no, its totally different
its a roleplaying game with rpg elements
👋
which i know is the same but you get what i mean
Also just a final question, can I add lore to my character sob, I only know one dnd character from a friend and they do have some lore but I dont know if others HAVE to read it before beginning or something
lore is called a backstory, and its not a requirement but its better with one, and if your DM doesnt even look at your backstory thats probably a red flag
also i can make a homebrew class for you
I'm fine firkmwkr ;w;
Im only thinking of doing dnd rn... cuz I don't have lots of time free usually
But I do have some stuff planned out
cool! what do you have planned?
Just some characters, a gunslinger class maybe and a mage kid that does not know how to spell the names of their spells 😭 (IT IS SILLY BUT LIKE I THOUGHT "what if they did alot of damage in exchange that they have to wait 3 turns to even cast it since they don't know how to even say it)
The kid sounds like the perfect addition to a campaign a friend of mine is slowly making (all ima say about it is everyone is stuck together with what can only be described as magical handcuffs)
The best thing to do as a newbie (like myself) is to try n keep stuff to the basics. You dont wanna overcomplicated stuff when you dont even know what ya doing first.
exactly
It does help if you know people irl who can explain stuff to you and show you what to focus on
At least that’s what helped me understand
well i help a lot of newbies but not irl
I'm gonna do some more research b4 seerching for ppl to play with, It does seem really fun to do dnd tho.
it is!
but if you want help DM me
Ty for the help :3
I can promise outside of some complicated rules dnd is probably the best game ever lol
this
grappling is the bane of my existence
I got really into it bc of tales from avantris (you prob get this alot from newcomers) and due to being a roleplaying game which i was preciously alot into roleplaying
*previously
legends of avantris is not an exact dnd game, most are not with professionals
I’ve only been playing for a couple years and most of the campaigns were created by groups dm I only know 1 premade campaign
I’m also an absolute newb when it comes to running my own campaign
well keep trying
I ran campaign once and whole party left staring town because of a single stall
okay?
The food was questionable
(Imagine a Minotaur selling Minotaur meat and other “people”
hello were i need to send a message to find a kinda experimented DM?
its realy urgent
thanks
how i send message in it tho?
#find-a-game read the instructions
What built would you recommend for 1st playthough?
paladin, generally
How come?
its a good middle ground between melee, caster, and support
and the higher charisma is great for roleplay
gives a bit of everything
i would say oath of devotion? its the simplest one iirc
Okay, thanks

Try to take ur time and read the tips :)) always helped me
Okie
Hey, was playing my first campaign, we have some homebrew, and i had a situation during the game, my character is a human mystic, order of the immortal, basically a tank. I've had some spells active which made my skin tough and metal-like and it gave me the ac of 19(all of the abilities were discussed with dm), but then during a battle the enemy has cut my arm off using a katana, at first i was ok with that since our medic could probably stitch it back later, but when i mentioned that, he purposefully went back and crushed it. After the session i tried to argue with the dm that he couldn't cut it off, citing the rules of dnd, common logic and the fact that my skin was steel-like, but his answer was, and i quote: "I don't give a shit, I'm not going to explain my every action to you, it is what it is and you don't argue." Was i in the wrong for trying to argue with him, and i shouldn't question the dm, or what?
Well, as you said limb loss isn't a typical thing in D&D, and personally I'd expect that to be noted as a possibility in the house rules shared with the players before the game starts.
As to an opponent going back and destroying the severed limb, were you saying that in character or making an observation as a player?
I will agree your DM didn't comport themselves well with their counter-argument. That kind of language would be my cue to duck out of the game. You do have to accept that not everything that happens to your character is going to be under your control, but that response sounds dismissive and rude. You're playing the game together and there should be a level of mutual respect.
As i remember, rules to limb loss weren't discussed, or at least without details and the requirements to perform it, and i don't know if the attack was a crit, or was it in any way possible according to the rules.
And i wasn't saying anything in the character, just asked as a player if our medic could stitch it back later, but then a couple of rounds later, when i mentioned it again(as a player), the enemy went back and crushed it with his foot.
And i agree that not everything is under my control and i didn't try to change what have happened, but sometimes it feels like nothing is under my control as a player, and no matter what i do the outcome is the same
How do the other players feel about how the DM is running the game?
I don't know, we usually don't discuss the rules and argue during the game, they might have wrote personally to dm about their concerns, but some players sounded a bit angry about the game sometimes
I'm not suggesting you unionise, but it might help if you have a chat with them and present your concerns to the DM together. I will however reiterate that the message you quoted doesn't sound like someone I'd want to spend my free time playing with.
the dm is usually not that harsh by the way and he's my close friend that just wanted to play dnd and decided to be a dm for us, but ok, i'll speak with the rest of the players, thanks for advice
Good luck with it, I hope it works out well!
Could someone tell me all the information i need to know about the warlock class? This is the class i probably wanna make my first character with

Warlock
Cast spells derived from occult knowledge
Warlocks quest for knowledge that lies hidden in the fabric of the multiverse. They often begin their search for magical power by delving into tomes of forbidden lore, dabbling in invocations meant to attract the power of extraplanar beings, or seeking places of power where the influence of these beings can be felt. In no time, each Warlock is drawn into a binding pact with a powerful patron. Drawing on the ancient knowledge of beings such as angels, archfey, demons, devils, hags, and alien entities of the Far Realm, Warlocks piece together arcane secrets to bolster their own power.

Excellent choice, warlocks are awesome!
I tend to use advantage in those situations as it simplifies things rather than doing extra math.
Really a matter of preference. I don't do it consistently but I would give advantage personally
You could also let them make the check even if they aren't proficient if you normally don't
There's no specific rules for it afaik
Or even give it to them free gratis.
It's a Perception 20 check to spot what's out of place in the forge, but if you've got smith's tools proficiency, you don't roll - you just know.
Also consider the cost of failure.
just created my first character is it usually difficult to get into the game as a newbie? just asking before i look for my first group to play with
no, but outside of adventures league you typically would find a group before creating your character in case the DM has specific guidelines or is running a setting that limits options
I am new to DnD. The whole thing seems really great, but I am not overly social. Is there an online group where people can start looking for people to join that anyone is aware of?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Follow the bot post to read about using our Looking for Game/Group channels.
I am going to read that shortly, but do people want you to have a character built beforehand?
Or do they typically want you to build something to go with the group?
or is it more up to the DM and their preferences?
I'd say it's up to the DM and the table. Knowing how to make a character is a good idea, though!
can be different from table to table, some DMs will allow almost anything while others like to limit things to fit a specific setting
Make a character or two for practice.
I have a vague understanding of how to make a character but I really think I need a buddy to work through this one.

Great info there folks
i would be grateful if i can take a little of ur time 😄
Any tips for a newbie on character management? I’ve been running into some challenges with different sheet preferences from players/DMs:
- One DM discouraged DDB for AL play, said to use the 2024 paper sheet
- Had people confused by the official 2024 sheet I was using (bought and downloaded), wondering why i was not using DDB export
- Some prefer Roll20 while outright refusing to accept players using DDB's
- Tried handwritten, but my handwriting isn’t great for keeping up
- Struggling with tracking notes for mid/end-game – learning a separate sheet or notebook helps
I’m trying to figure out the best way to manage characters without juggling too many sources. I'm about to register on Roll20 and replicate my character there, but it seems like a lot now having 3 sources to manage and keep up. Would love any and all ideas!
how new are we talking? I'm super new myself and I've been learning and researching a ton. I just found a really cool deck someone made on reddit and really simplifies the basics that I can DM you if you want it. I just saved a copy for myself.
like super new from scratch 😄
let me send you a DM of what I found
sure
if all of this is AL related then I'd suggest asking around in either #adventurers-league or #al-characters as not all of us would be super familiar with their specific rules
Not limited to AL. I've done a homebrew one shot, an AL session (looking to do another), and a non-AL session. So this ask is sorta stemming from all of those. Just trying to find tips/recommendations for ease of management regardless of AL or not
I recommend using DDB as a base. You can export the sheet to PDF if you need to have it physically.
There’s some 3rd party tools to integrate DDB to roll20 as well.
But what about having a character that requires having the digital PHB to create? I had purchase to that to do that with DDB, and not really looking to do that with Roll20. Seems redundant and expensive. I guess would it be more of a decision around whether or not I want to join a Roll20 required game?
Right, if they're using Roll20 exclusively and if they're even so strict as to not allow the tool that imports DDB info to the character sheet, then that's probably a sign that it's not the right table for you.
people being confused by the 2024 sheets are probably still using the 2014 versions
Some DMs as you’ve experienced have certain requirements. If you can’t or don’t want to meet them then it’s totally ok to skip and find a better table for you.
As for note taking, I suggest using a note or other writing app (docs, notepad, word, etc) if you play online. Personally when I’m a player I just write down important names in-session then fill in any other details I feel are important post session
You’ll have to do that either way if you don’t have any other way to access the content. The DDB character creator already has the free Basic Rules integrated.
When you join a DDB campaign the DM or another player might own the book you need as well as a master tier DDB subscription, which allows for content sharing
I'll need to look up the import option. I don't think it was as strict as that, but more just using that UI/sheet specifically
I think it's called beyond20
Yeah and I got help from someone who let me join their account to use the full 2024 PHB, but i later went ahead and purchased on DDB so i am now able to do that for everyone. I just don't want to buy it again for Roll20 if i'm needing to use Roll20
Ah ok I just found it. Double checked this DM's rules and they explicitly don't allow use of it, so yeah I think that might not be a table option for me, or I would just need to create a new character within the limits of the free options. Cool tool though so thank you for mentioning!
sounds like a DM i'd personally want to avoid
Hellooo, im trying to start out on playing dnd with a couple of friends and, ive tried watching a couple of youtube videos on it but tbh I didnt understand anything about how to pick stats or actually dice rolls in general, if anyone can, please explain to me how any of that works (be careful, i might have more questions)

Great links there to get I the basics. Then after reading those ask away
Oh sorry, thank youu
No need to apologize friend
@lost silo second the no apologizing. If it's one thing I have found being a newcomer to D&D myself, is this community as been extremely welcoming and helpful with any and all questions. It's so incredibly refreshing. I honestly don't think I would have done my last couple of sessions if I wasn't on here.
That’s awesome to hear
That's so cool 🥹
So uhm, the rules seem too simple, i downloaded the pdf about what to do on your turn since it looks really helpful, but i thought dnd was this really intricate and complicate game where i need to read a 300 page book that also has like 2 sequels to it 😭
I dont understand the leveling mechanic but the other stuff doesn't seem like extremely complicated
It can be that complicated if you want to go that deep with it. But all in all it is rather simple
Im a player but no one in my party has ever played before and most of the stuff here seemed to tell me to rely on my dm or my party to explain where i am doing something wrong
I’ve been playing for a LONG time and I keep it simple for newer folks who eventually get the hang of things so then we amp it up every so often
That seems really beginner friendly which i was not expecting from dnd 😭
It’s a bit of both. It’s perfectly fine and honestly expected to not know everything and to consult the rulebook when and where someone forgets and it’s also ok for the DM to make a spot ruling to keep the game flowing nicely
So I think I'm going to toy around with creating a Roll20 based character and see how I feel about sticking with it for situations where I maybe want to use Roll20. Keeping it limited to the free options only, but figured id give it a go just to get a feel for the experience of it.
Hi, I am creating currently a Tiefling with a Backstory, that her father was a mighty demon (similar to Inuyasha), but couldn't decide which class she should go, I am on the edge between Berserker (Strength based, muscular power and rage) and Hexblade (Also hard hitting with her power, but also be charming, and more allrounder with spells. Her patron would be just her demon blood). I created her backstory and personality for both specs. She can fit in both very well. If you have some good advice (besides from with no explaining or chose for your group) I will be very thankfully. (Got until also the advice that warlock has more possibles then barbarian using only his strength).
Dang so does Roll20 not allow you to edit background and personality trait information after you create the character? I'm seeing nothing that lets me edit any of that.
Check with the Roll20 support forums (or ask folks in #third-party since it's a 3rd party tool/service).
hello how can i post in #looking-for-dm ?

Correct - anywhere you can type here in our channels. Even in #find-a-game (bot will automatically remove it afterwards).
okay thanks a lot

Hi I'm Jan I've played a couple of campaigns before so I know enough of the basics but I still have rhings to learn so I'm just here to ask questions
Hi I’m currently playing BG3 solo and with friends. Can someone tell me if the way the game is portrayed is accurate to what an IRL D&D campaign would look like?
Ehhh, some snippets.
Some between-character interactions, like characters being upset over something against their personality and ideals and goals, can be expected. The sheer commodity of magic items in BG3, not exactly, nor the slot system they have for it.

morning folks
There will be some similarities because BG3 uses a highly customised 5e, but for the most part the experience is entirely different.
so, I’m a new player with zero DnD experience trying to find their first campaign. Any advice?
If you're looking for your first campaign id recommend looking in the #find-a-game and take a read over that, id also recommend familiarising yourself with the basic rules and letting whoever is in the group that you're new 🫀

I do believe the rules for dnd are free on the dndbeyond site
I just wanted to play D&D, but noooooooooooooo, now I have to go beyond that before I can even start :P
thanks for the help tho
It be like that sometimes
Question, Is Ravenloft and Cure of Stahd in the same "plane", do I buy both of them and combine them?
I do believe curse of strahd is set in Ravenloft
So just buy CoS and then play it, you can get other ravenloft stuff as well but CoS should be all you need
anyways, I found a couple campaigns I liked and applied for them, they all said they're newbie friendly and they have times that work for me. Guess I'll look through the game rules while I'm waiting for responses
BTW I would recommend making a practice character just so u know what to do before making one for a game
Rouge, barbarian or fighter is a good choice for new players
Hi i just joined. Were looking for a possible DM to help guide us group of 5+ people on a discord server (complete beginners somewhat) , need to sched it sorry if wrong channel
hello guys, I am new here and I don't really use discord so I don't really know how it works, I am new to dnd I love watching people play, but more than that I love seeing and making art especially fantasy, so I would love to see where I can post some of my art here and ask for feedback
You can share your D&D arts and crafts in #dnd-arts-and-crafts - but the channel is not specifically asking for feedback/art tips (there are better servers for getting art feedback)
thank you
Hiiii I’m new

is there anything specific you need help with?
Just setting everything up and joining a game I guess lmao!
ahhh
unfortunately i'm taking a break from DM-ing rn because I just did an adventure with my friends just a couple weeks ago
I'm building a ranger in D&D 2024 and I have realized that I don't quite know what a prepared spell is
I'm used to spell slots, the page im looking at for ranger lists "Prepared spells per spell level" but no spell slots
Your character selects from their spells that they've learned a set of spells that they'll have prepared for the day. The spells they haven't prepared they will not be able to cast that day. But after a long rest, they can swap things up and have a new set of prepared spells.
ok so that is what i thought, ty,
then the page for ranger not listing spell slots is just an error?
So on the Ranger class list it lists how many spell slots you have at each level as well as how many spells you can have prepared: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Ranger
So a level 3 ranger has 4 prepared spells and 3x Level 1 spell slots to use their leveled spells.
there we go! website i was looking at just didnt have it i guess
So 3 spell slots to use one of their 4 prepared spells.

hey, y'all i just joined and i was trying to find a game but the looking for players and community # s are full of "there are no messages in this thread". is there a better way of finding a game?
nevermind, im also a little new to discord sorry
hey why cant i request a dm?
What do you mean?
Hey
So I just finished creating my dungeons and dragon character, and I’m a wizard. How do I actually play a match or get started from this point forward?
Help
you need to find someone to play with so go to #looking-for-players
Oki
Go to #find-a-game and read up on how to post in those areas
hi there, me and my friends want to play dnd cause we all like rpgs and i just have some questions about the mechanics and stuff like combat and what the DM does, especially since ive taken on the role of DM and it looks kind of complicated even though we plan on using a premade adventure, basically do i have to prepare alot before starting or we can just start on the premade adventure and go from there

also none of us have played dnd before so itll probably be a mess lol
How much prep you do tends to be a matter of preference
But in general, reading over the adventure itself, the combat rules and the glossary are probably good starting points
And have your players read their character abilities
is it fine if we understand like 10% of the stuff and just go in and see what happens or is that a bad idea
There is no single right way to do it. If you have fun doing that, it's fine
out of the 5 of us in the group only one guy can read all the rules and remember them and that guy is not me xd
No one remembers all the rules. But it's good to have a general ideal and look up things as needed
alright thats nice, thanks for help
@twilit panther
Hey. I’m new too. Can I join? Though I’m trying to learn. I created my character.
I’d like to play an actual game. I’ve read so much it’s making me dizzy
quick question, in this server's context, what is a "community game" ?
theyre generally things like West Marches, which are large groups of players in a living world. they can be text based or voice based iirc
How dose one get into playing the game and get a group?
Usually you play with friends.
But you could use dnd beyond or roll20 to do an online campaign
follow the easy steps in #find-a-game to find what DM's are offering for groups and / or post what you are looking for in a group.
will it be ok if i just make the entire adventure and monsters and encounters by myself because i dont wanna spend like $60 on a premade one
for my first time with a bunch of guys who have also never played dnd before
That’s what most people do.
Alternatively by any of the starter sets, they’re like $30 each.
I wouldn't be so sure about that. But that is not to say it isn't a valid approach.
There are many free adventures, even official ones. For the latter, you can find a selection here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1827-adventuring-on-a-budget-the-free-d-d-resources-on
i have watched a couple vids about the game and it seems kinda chaotic and not linear in the slightest, so im also not sure how much i should make my group follow the plot and the rules of the game
there are alot of rules and things involving dice and stuff that i think ill wing alot of it
That depends on how the dm likes to run it, if you want to run a chaotic game, you can, if you want to run a linear game, you can. It’s all up to the dm as to what they present the players with. The dm can also break or change the rules if they want, generally this should be done for the groups enjoyment though not just because they can
Some dms roll dice for everything and others only roll them in combat, it depends on what the dm wants to do
Most groups find a balance somewhere in the middle of those two extremes
Well, that's the thing about a TTRPG being run by a person. It doesn't have to be pre-scripted like videogames, the DM can improvise if needed.
In a videogame, a dialogue choice might be wittled down to "agree or disagree", choosing a red team or blue team, etc. But in D&D, since there is a person running it, it's actually possible to make a third choice, or otherwise say basically anything when talking to nonplayer characters. You could easily see someone trying to make a compromise, or to remain neutral, or to go make their own yellow team or something.
There's a lot of adventure books now which do essentially have an overarching script, but again, it is possible for a DM to improvise, add or edit things, and so on.
Chat, is playing on mobile (with roll 20) possible
Sort of but really not ideal. Many virtual tabletop tools are not mobile friendly.
Owlbear.rodeo is one of the few that’s actually okay-ish with mobile devices.
From experience, Roll20 is definitely not optimal for mobile
True
hey guys im new to this server and i cant find out how this server works
What did you want to know specifically?
What do you not understand?
how to find a group
beacuse im not a dm nor in one
Then you go to #find-a-game and make a looking for DM post
yea but i dont understand it
Alright, you go to #find-a-game and select /looking for DM, send. Fill out form and send
done

If you want a video game equivalent, Baldur's Gate III is your best option.
So, its important to keep in mind that "playing D&D online" and "playing a D&D themed video game" are two different things. If you're looking for a single player experience, then you're looking for a video game. Baulder's Gate 3 would be the best option for that. But when most people talk about "playing D&D online" what they mean is using discord or some other platform to voice or text chat with other people so they can play a normal game of D&D without being in person with with other people
Gotcha ok thanks guys I have been interested in baldurs gate 3. I like the idea of rolling the dice and leaving it in fates hands though so maybe I’ll venture into playing dnd through discord like you mentioned.
HEY EVERYONE SO I WAS WONDERING IF SOMEONE COULD HELP ME BRING MY CHARACTER TO LIFE?AND MAKE MY CHARACTER SHEET? THIS IS MY IDEA

How much on character creation do you know
Check out this bot post. It covers how you can find a game on this server or other sites like Roll20
Ok
Literally none😭
Thx
Happy to help
Have a read of the free basic rules on character creation and any question ask here
Where do I create a character sheet??
Paper or dndbeyond
Okay I'll work on it!! Thanks a lot!!❤️🩹❤️🩹
Hun, it’d be best you take making ya character slowly. There’s no need to rush
can somebody help me with explain how DC works how i can help my player to do as i am the DM and they and myself is new?
A DC is the target number for ability checks and saving throws.
Basically, a DC is the number that a creature needs to beat in order to succeed at something.
If the total of your check/save equals or exceeds the DC, that’s a success.
Anything less is a failure.
As a rough metric, DC 10 is an easy task, 15 is medium, and 20 is hard.
Hi im new to d&d i want to know how to play since i got very interested on playing after seeing some videos of roleplaying games and all seem to lead to d&d i appreciate any information i can get to start
Frequently, as the DM, the game will tell you what the DC for something is. For example, it says that the DC for picking a lock is a DC15 Sleight of Hand check. If your player wants to pick a lock, they'll have to roll the appropriate check, add up all their modifiers, and if the total number is 15 or higher, they succeed!

thanks!!
Thanks!
also just for refrence i am playing for free i have no D&D equipment
The Basic Rules are completely free and you can find dice rolling software online, thankfully
You can find the free basic rules in the bot post just a few messages above
So Im coming back to DnD after several years, is there a big noticable difference between 2014 and 2024 rules?
Yes and no. The vast majority of the differences is going to be in the character creation options. New class features, new subclasses, spells and feats work differently. That kinda thing. There's a bit of change to the base rules as well, but a strong understanding of the 2014 rules will get you very far when learning the 2024 rules
You can find the rules for DCs here in the free Basic Rules:
Thanks again
The basic rules are too extensive, do I really have to learn them all at once before I can play? Or is not mandatory to know them if i have someone to guide me?
You definitely do not need to memorize the entire thing. There will be 4-5 other people at the table to help you remember anything if you forget, and its perfectly fine to pull out the rule book while playing. That's very normal. You can make your life a lot easier if you learn where certain information is within the rules, rather than learning what that information actually says.
Hi! I'm new to dnd but i kind of understand the basics of the game. Do i need to have the book to play?
Okay what a relief My head was starting to hurt from reading the rules thank You 😭
Welcome! The free basic rules contains the bare minimum of information that you need to be able to play, so you can actually get started for free if you want. The main thing you'll get from purchasing other rulebooks is additional character options. New species, subclasses, spells, etc

the free basic rules I just mentioned is linked in the bot post above, under the Quick Links section
Where do people usually play?
That can vary a ton. Some do in person, whether at a DM's home or at a local game story (or even a library). Others use a digital platform like Roll20. Some just manage with a calling service like Discord or Skype.
Discord plus a platform like Roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo is a popular combo.
D&D is played in the imagination. Meaning, you don't need a website or platform to play the game. You just need to be able to talk to other people. So once you find a group, you can decide on whatever method of communication works best for all of you. Discord voice chat is a popular option for online play.
Alright, thankyou!
Is most of d&d matches Made in vcs? If thats the case do i have to talk to play in vc or is there any alternatives?
No tag PBP found in category new.
?tag new online
?tag new pbp
DND is masssively about communicating your roleplay of your character, so it would be difficult to play a character without talking to any of the party if theyre all in a vc, but if you talk to the group you want to play with im sure that you can find a solution
Voice Chat is definitely the most popular way to play online, but as I said, the only thing you really need is a method of communication. So, there are some people that play the game through text chats instead. This is called "Play-By-Post" or PBP for short. The article above gives a brief explanation of how this works. If that interests you, then you can look for those keywords when searching for a group. It is less popular than voice chat though, which means it might take longer to find a group that is interested in playing that way
Can i find a PBP Match in this server?
You can, but they are rare, as Colossus said.
Yes. If you search through the posting in #looking-for-players you can try to find a DM that is hosting a PBP game
There are websites and servers that specialize in PBP, but the search for a good group in any format is challenging.
im trying to get into dnd but i cant get past scheduling conflicts with my group
That's always the hardest part, yeah. I've personally had the most success by forming groups around when we're free, rather than forming a group first and then scheduling when to play after the fact. But there's not too much advice we can give you at this point. Everyone's situation is unique
What is VTT?
Virtual Table Top. A shared board visible through a website or app.
Where do i get it? Do i have to pay to get it?
Some are paid
Your DM usually decides which VTT you'll be using, if you're using one.
In most cases, they're free for the players. The DM may have to purchase the software or content, though.
So the DM have to Buy access and he Will ss in a vc? Or do we have to individually join in the same web/app
Usually you'll access the website provided by the DM separately.
Case by case. In the vast majority it's free with an account to access it.
Oh i see thanks a lot!
Hello, could someone explain to me about Druid's Spirit Totem? It's a bonus action, but there's a box next to Short Rest in my Character Sheet. Does that mean I can only use it once before I do a short rest? I thought bonus action can happen every turn
you can take 1 bonus action a turn, but some abilities in the game (bonus actions included) have limited uses. in the case of a shepherd druid's spirit totem, you can activate the ability as a bonus action once per short rest
The feature says in the text that you can only use it once per short/long rest.
Oh I see it now. Thank you. I had to click on the text for the more descriptive text

New 5o discord question. Was told to DM private message someone and I don't know how to do that?
Click the persons name and, if they allow messages, there should be an area to message them. See https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/360034632292-Sending-Messages
If they don't allow direct messages, then if they have an LFG post, you can use the thread attached to the post to communicate with them.
I tried searching for the name they gave me but it is not recognized.
Then perhaps they're no longer on the server (do be careful - there can be a lot of scammers on Discord).
Also some folks don't allow direct message except from folks they've added as friends.
It was someone looking for a player on the D&D beyond site.
OK maybe I am in the wrong place.
So there is the DnDBeyond forums here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums
This is different then this Discord (which you are currently on).
Different platforms, run by the same company.
You can also find games on this server using the Looking For Game channel (LFG). See #find-a-game to learn how to use them.
For example DM's needing players for their games post in #looking-for-players and you can private message them or post in their threads to indicate interest in their game.
Or you could join another D&D Discord server that run a variety of D&D games in #looking-for-community
so i have a few more questions about how the game is played especially online, like is there a site or app the group of us can use where it can show everyone's player cards and statuses and all that and i can do my DM stuff like giving encounters, writing down what people do so i can keep track of everything and also to like show an enemy during combat and have my group use various visuals i came up with in a sort of interactive way
cause currently im making one really long google slides that all of us are gonna share while we sit in vc and play, is that a valid way to play
Sure, if the rest of the table is okay with it.
You seem to be asking for a virtual tabletop (VTT), though I'm not sure there's a single one that does everything you're looking for. Popular VTTs include:
- Owlbear Rodeo
- Roll20
- Fantasy Grounds
- Foundry
- Demiplane
There are VTTs that do what you're describing and more
oh thats great yeah

is there a conversion to metric for the character sheets and enemies
What do you mean by conversion metric?
A lot is done in the imperial system rather than metric
Movement is measured in feet for example
i don't know what moving 30ft is but i know what it is after converting to metric and it says 9 metres
On a map or board, each square is 5 ft so if someone can move 30ft, they could then move through 6 squares horizontally, vertically or diagonally
It's also how you measure attacks like Fireball which casts a 20ft radius sphere (40ft diameter) - anyone inside that 20ft radius would be caught in the fireball
ah i see ill make my combat map have a grid then so its easier to understand distance and whatnot
Yup, that's the best way to measure it. Especially during combat when things like positioning can matter a lot.
How do I redeem my digital purchase for Heroes of the Borderlands? The email says its ready on DnD Beyond but im not finding it.
how many goblins is too many goblins for a group of level 1 ranger, wizard and paladin
is a wave of 2, then 3 then 5 good to start with or ill just wing it live until it works
You’d want to check their CR.
A monster’s CR means it’s a moderate challenge for a group of four adventurers of that level.
So a CR 1 creature would be a moderate challenge for four level 1 characters.
It would be slightly harder for three of them.
this thing i have says one goblin is 1/4 CR
Then three at once would be pretty close.
this is gonne be like the first combat encounter assuming my group doesnt deviate from the plot in the first 5 minutes
Five would be harder.
ah alright then, ill do something like wave of 2, 3, 3 then
Breaking them into waves would make it easier.
Especially for level 1, where characters don’t have a lot of HP.
It would also let you adapt the number of goblins up or down if you need to make it harder or easier on the fly.
What are the best resources to learn how to make a very simple homebrew world?
Sowmthinsa that's extremely beginner friendly and a campaign I can play with friedsn who don't know anything about dnd
Check out the Five Room Dungeon method and anything relevant by Sly Flourish.
Put three adventures together with a link between each. That's a campaign. Spiral your world-building out of that.
Thanks :D
I’d also suggest Matt Colville’s “The Local Area” video. You can set a bunch of adventures in a smaller, more contained world for a good while and expand as desired.
I decided to join a close friend of mine's campaign she's running this semester in the D&D club at the community college we go to. I've never played before, and before 2 weeks ago, I'd never created a character either. Our first session is tomorrow, but unfortunately, I was exposed to covid Monday, so now I have to wait and test this evening, and just pray I'm negative so I can go to the session tomorrow. I've already informed my dm of all of this
Best of luck to you! I hope you get to play. Based on the context you've provided, I can assume that group is playing in person, but its also possible to play D&D online. In the worse case scenario, perhaps you could ask the group to accommodate you by doing a voice or video call with you and letting you play that way
Yeah we're in person. We all have discord and have a separate chat in a server for the club and maybe.

The rules linked above and #learn-to-play are good starting places!
I found a Match what Will happen now where its the Game gonna develop? Are there special channels for the games or is it just gonna happen in prívate in a dm group or different server?
It's going to be organized by that DM specifically. I'd reach out to them about how they would like to handle it.
I have an idea for a D&D newbies table at a Halloween event - have a space called "NERF Island" (Negates Energy that is Really Fatal) for people to just play D&D Fight Club. I'd have some pregen charaters ready.
Good ✅ or Bad 🚫 idea?
I don’t want to say it’s a bad idea, because I’m sure you could have plenty of fun with it, but idk if “D&D Fight Club” is the best way to get newcomers interested in the hobby, since there’s a lot more to the game than just that. Skipping out on role play or investing yourself in a character really doesn’t do the game justice
I see Colossus typing, and I trust his opinion on this, but I'll start typing as well to make a point. DnD isn't really made or balanced for PVP whatsoever. I wouldn't ever recommend a PVP game to new players.
Oh yeah I didn’t even consider that it might be PvP. I was assuming party vs monster in a coliseum or something. Yeah if it’s PVP I’d say that should be a hard no

with the mounted feat, do you get advantage against enemies without mounts? i ask because it only says advantage against ones with SMALLER mounts, it doesnt quite make sense, so i want to clarify, thx
#dnd-rules is the spot for that question!
Hello all, I have done D&D once at a friend's house but still don't know much
Welcome! Did you have specific questions?
Well mainly how the games are ran are they commonly ran in voice chat or text followed by a few other questions if they come to mind
Most games nowadays are online and run over voice chat. There are games that are text-only (called Play By Post games), but they're much more rare by comparison.
That's great, then next is what do we use to roll and keep track of sheets like I said very new to it online and I know it's probably a very stupid question.
IRL sheets or ddb/any other online character creator
It depends on the group. Some use a VTT like Roll20, whereas others don't bother. (Every group I'm in is different)
Ultimately, your DM will tell you what the group is using, and will provide what's necessary.
exactly
DM's choice, period
Okay okay cool. . . Well I guess I'll try and get started then.

Hello
Welcome to the official D&D server!
If you're new to D&D, you may find #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel useful to help get you started
Feel free to ask any specific questions as you run into them.
So what dnd game do I run roll20 or the dnd game on steam
I'm not aware of a D&D virtual tabletop on Steam. Roll20 is a virtual tabletop that can be used to play D&D with folks.
All you need to play D&D is the free basic rules, character sheets (physical or digital), dice (physical or digital), a way to communicate, and a group of folks wanting to play.
As a reminder, we don't actually host any games on this server but you're welcome to use our Looking For Game channels to find a game.
See #find-a-game to learn more.
It looks like there's a bunch of D&D related games on steam, including Baldur's Gate and D&D Online. But those are different than the tabletop game
Ah okay. So a video/computer game.
Yeah they may be inspired by or use some of the rules from D&D but it's a different experience then sitting around a table (physical or virtual) to play D&D with people.

#dm-discussion is probably where you want to be for in-depth DM conversation, but to briefly address your questions, how many players is enough varies. I'd say personally my minimum is three and my max is six. Four or five is a solid group, though—neither too small nor too big.
As for a virtual tabletop, Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo are two of the most popular free options. I prefer Owlbear myself.
ah sorry
All good!
I would've used roll20 but it dpesn't have Rise of Tiamat anymore
The traditional party size is 4. As long as you don't stray too far from that number then you should be good.
Also, you don't really need a VTT. Especially if you're just starting out
If you have map files digitally, you can upload them to most VTTs, including Roll20, without needing to buy the module.
Okay, I got four, just need em to make their characters. and uploading them wasn't something I could figure out.
Thank you guys btw, I've only ever dmed once and then my ex at the time never played with me again cause results of his choice of action
Rise of Tiamat is a medium level module iirc (level 8). If you're new, try running a low level session first.
okay, what's your suggestion?
Roll20 has a Discord server and their forums are fairly good, I've heard. Pretty sure there's a subreddit too. You can get more help in those sorts of places!
Okay! I'll look into that some more then, Thanks!
As for low-level adventures, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle or Dragon of Icespire Peak are community favorites. If you're going with one-shots rather than campaigns, you have so many options.
Hiii. I am completely new to the D&D world, but I am interested in learning however, I don't know where to start. I have tried asking on reddit but no help there.

I’m completely new to dnd my partner plays online but I really want to get into it but have nobody to play with
Have you considered asking your partner about it?
I have but his is very much warhammer based.. and very dark compared to what I have seen previous
I see.
You can look in #find-a-game or try looking for D&D games in a local gaming store.
Hi, do we have a dedicated channel for one shot? I dont seams to find it...
We don't, but you can filter a search in any channel with keywords.
Thanks
Is there Like a list of all subclasses in existence? I don't need their stats, only the names and maybe in which sourcebook they can be found
I checked DnDBeyond but the Class Pages only list 1 Subclass each and the Shop Doesnt list the classes for each handbook
This Reddit post is a few years old, so I'm not sure it's comprehensive, but it does cover a lot of 'em: https://www.reddit.com/r/dndnext/comments/k9d43y/i_made_a_list_of_all_106_subclasses_and_13_classes/
Thank you, maybe someone Else has Something or I have to collect the remaining subclasses myself 🥲
Yeah it is a little strange how that's not an easily available list to find. On D&D Beyond, if you search for things like spells and monsters, it will show you the options from books you don't own, but if you click on them the info will be blurred out and you'll be prompted to go to the marketplace. But for subclasses specifically, they just hide the ones you haven't purchased yet. I'm sure someone somewhere has put together the list that you're looking for, but I don't know where that would be off the top of my head.
RPGbot has class guides that list subclasses and sources.

Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
