Yeah but I think playing it might get me upto speed faster
Whats the role of the monk in D&D
It is possible to learn some things as you go, but you will have a much better experience with the game if you take some time to learn at least the basics of the rules before you start playing. At the very least, you will need a character before the game starts, so learning the rules on Character Creation is basically mandatory. But the more knowledge you are able to bring to the table, the smoother your game will go. Plus, its pretty hard to create a character properly if you don't know how the game is actually played. That's why character creation is chapter 2 in the basic rules.
If you try to play the game before learning literally anything about the rules, then assuming the other people in your group are more experienced, then they will have to spend the entire game explaining things to you. And if no one in your group is experienced, you’re just going to be lost and confused about what to do.
You don’t have to memorize all of the rules beforehand, or anything like that, but if you want you and your group to have fun in your first session, you should put in at least a little effort to make it run smoothly
Hmm
Monks are martial art masters, so they strike fast, and have high mobility. They aren't super durable, but they are hard to hit, so they typically play as frontline melee fighters
It says i have to buy book,I dont wanna spend money
The Basic Rules are available for free, and that contains everything you need to know to play the game. The main thing that additional purchase will get you is charater creation options
So I can't create my own character if I dont buy?
The basic rules contains 12 of the game's 13 classes, but it only has 1 subclass for each. So you can still make a character and play the game, but your choices will be quite limited
You can, just there'll be some limitations on the options available.
You get 8 races and 12 classes for free
How do I claim those?
Well if you're using an online character creation tool, then they should be available as default options. If you're filling out a paper character sheet on your own, then you can read the free rules online to see what options are available to you
anyone wana play i know the basics

Hi! I am new to dnd and i Need help mastering my First campaign, Is there someone willing to help me?
Sorry my bad
all good
When you say "mastering your first campaign" do you mean that you'll be playing as the dungeon master, or you just want to learn the basics and get a handle on things?
Im playing as the dungeon master
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
the information above should be helpful to you
wait i didn't mean like rules and technical stuff, i just need help setting up the first session
I see. Then yeah, you should hop over to the #dm-discussion channel and get advice from fellow DMs
thank you
Hello
heya
I am looking for someone who has experience in DM dragon of icespire peak
Would be also even better if they have run it with just one other person so 1 character and 1 dm
wow what a coincidence I LITERALLY just finished that with a few friends a few days ago (i tried DM-ing for the first time)
unfortunately I'm taking a long break from DM-ing because it's a lot more work than I thought (still enjoyed it tho)
Oh wow haha that is crazy !
I’m in a pretty unique situation. I have never played dnd before and neither has my girlfriend
So I have never even played and I am DM lol
It’s our first time for it all lol and only two of us
People have started playing D&D with DMing, it’s not that far out of the question.
I actually started as a player but the campaign had to be cancelled due to some schedueling issues
But my time as a DM was enjoyable if a little stressful because I had to improv a lot. I'm still a newcomer to this kind of roleplaying game
Yeah I promise you the improv never goes away. 😂 But overtime you definitely can become more comfortable handling it.
oh it was a lot of fun, especially doing orc voices
made a few friends laugh with it so that's what really mattered
Yeah that is fair, tbh I don’t even know if I want to be a dm yet. But I was trying to convince my friend to learn with me so I had to take the initiative
Do people get mad if you don’t improv ?
it really depends on who you're playing with.
Sometimes you need to follow the story, sometimes you need to adapt to what the players do.
for me, it was a case of "make it up as we go but follow a basic premise"
Sorry, I was talking more about making character voices and stuff like that
Not the story
So far I have just made up most of the story because all she has done is walk around and talk to people 😆
ohhhh
well, there's usually a block of text for certain NPCs that they need to say. If you feel like a random person doesn't have anything interesting to say, you can say that they ignore you, or they'll say that they're busy doing something else.
tbh I winged it a LOT.
Yeah exactly
Same, I basically created a very small side story on how she is going to inquire her sidekick
I have an idea but I dunno if it’s good
Would like to get some input
I was thinking about the first monster that she encounters give the option of maybe befriending the monster and have the monster join the party
Because it’s only 1 PC
Is this a thing ?
tbh i've never really heard of that before.
Maybe so?
Maybe a veteran player on here can tell me if it’s ever been done
Would be cool because I am working with just 1 PC and a sidekick
Giving PCs sidekicks and running a DMPC are all very common in low player count games. Who/what that sidekick is has as much potential for variety as any player character or NPC
Befriending a monster of some kind sounds like a clever way to work that introduction in. I might suggest not making it their first encounter as that is a little bit on-the-nose. And they'll get a better feel of how much of a difference the sidekick makes if they have to fend for themselves first.
So I actually created a little side quest for her to get her sidekick, basically, I am using a NPC magician that promises her that if she returns his stolen watch he will teach her magic (she is a rogue) so what I am going to say is that he cannot teach her magic. However, his daughter will become of service to her (sidekick)
So with that there will be 2 of them. Btw, the sidekicks
Come with the essentials kit that we are using.
But I am thinking about adding my own spin and allow her to maybe befriend one of the monsters she engages with on one of the quests. That way she can have a party of 3
All sound pretty great to me. I have no experience running sidekicks so I can't comment on having 3 of them
Have you ever seen someone have a monster added to the party ?
I think it’s pretty out of the box
After this we are going to join other people it’s both our first time
I've seen it before, just not super super common
Hmmm, yeah I’d imagine it’s not common but also I don’t think it’s common for just 2 people to be playing 😆
Also, I am thinking about the idea that the monster will join her party but not always obey her. Therefore, I can secretly control the monster by simply
Saying he’s sleeping right now or something and is not interested in combat
And then I can add him in at any time if she neeeds help
There are many playable "monster" races so while I haven't seen an actual monster NPC join the party, it's not a far stretch at all to me.
That's also the kind of thing the sidekick rules are for. It's a good way to help out a smaller party by giving them allies without getting into DMPC territory
And if you're going to take control of a sidekick away, don't do it randomly, that will just make the player feel powerless. You could make it a roll for a chance that the monster will not obey that command or that day
This is a great idea thank you
Im still semi new to dnd, is 3 different dnd games to much to play at once as a player? (They are 3 different groups 2)
I don't think anyone can answer that except you. Its all about what you feel comfortable with.
it depends on your memory capacity, bc you have to remember three different campaigns and characters. also do you have the time to give away 3 of your nights to 2-4 hour dnd sessions
I would spread the time between sessions so you can rest your brain
Yeah. They are spread through out the week pretty good
Can't they just play a ranger and have an animal companion lol
You have plenty of time to learn the game and there is always something new that is added to DnD
Alright thank you guys ✌️
I’ve been in DnD for almost 36 years now and still learning about the game
I haven’t really touched much in 2024 books
Just use to 2014 rules
I do have a monk that is 2024 created because of the better choices than 2014
Do a lot of people not like it if you speak in 3rd person ?
I’m assuming most people want to play when you are speaking in first person ?
Depends on the group.
I think speaking in first person would be really awkward for me
But the core rules, at least, say that either approach is fine.
Honestly, most of my groups are a mix or mostly third person
Both styles of play are perfectly valid. Most of the time, you’ll want to find a group that plays the same way you do, but all of this just comes down to personal preferences
I’m glad things the case. I was a bit worried that it was an unwritten rule that you had to engage in first person
Not saying that I would never play first person. It’s just a bit intimidating at first
Hi
heyo
Mr Smith sees what you mean, and agrees. It's something you might get more used to with a little practice.
I am so overwhelmed lol, I got no idea where to start… I’m in my first campaign rn and just barely managing to get by off of advice from friends… any idea what I should do first?
So I have this class and I don’t know if it’s good can you help I can send it in dms
Have you put a character together?
Premade characters
If you're feeling so overwhelmed tbf
For a player character, go to zero hit points and accumulate three failed death saves, or the massive damage rule.
Yes, like I said I took friends advice and used dnd beyond and it helped a lot… I’m just confused on a lot of things such as dice rolls, stats changes, and other beginner stuff… I’m currently doing everything on my phone and laptop so it’s all a lil much lol
What is the massive damage rule
If you get hit so hard the leftover damage past what's needed to take you to zero is (equal or? Unsure) more than your maximum hit points, you're toast.
Ok so it must exceed the max hitpoints not the current hitpoints
So if i have 7 hit points and got hit for 10 i would just be unconscious
Take a look at the Free Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules). Ability tests, attacks and spellcasting (if you have it).
Down and bleeding, but yes.
I’m asking cause handbooker helper doesn’t explain it well
Here's the rule for reference: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Droppingto0HitPoints
What class and level is your character?
Rogue and level 3
Human too if that’s helps any
And what weapons do you have?
Oops lol
I thought rolling a 20 was 2 successes not gaining 1 hit point
Crossbow, rapier, scimitar, short sword, simple weapons, and whip
Had to open dnd beyond sorry lol
I’m really starting to lean into this idea. The monster from the first quest is like a lion Minotaur. And I’m thinking maybe she can keep it almost like a pet (like our cat Huey)
It’s a little bit out there though
But if I can pull it off she will really enjoy it
To get the most out of rogue you must learn the sneak attack. It doesn't mean you have to Batman your foes from the shadows, but it does have a set of triggering conditions. One of these is just targeting an enemy that's already fighting a friend. It has to be with a weapon that has the finesse tag, or a ranged weapon. Ideally, every turn you attack, it should go off.

Are there things like magical tattoos, so my Barbarian can wear no armor but still get the benefit of magic armor?
Magical tattoos do exist, though it would be up to the to DM if you find one. Just like any other magic item
There are some clothes that give bonuses to ac and stuff like that
It would probably be a better option
Chat I just created my first dnd character 🗣️

Hi guys! Im very very new to this game and want to setup/ run an online campaign with my friends. Is there anyone out there thats experienced and could hop in a vc to teach me how?
This whole time i thought the feywilds was homebrew
I knew about Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms, I've been learning about some of the other settings. Dark Sun sounds brutal.
I’m reading it in the dm guide and it sounds like a good weekend hangout plane
can you add a profile pic to a character sheet on roll 20
Hi, I am looking for a table to join on tues or Mon

Newb here.
If I buy the 2024 DnD players handbook bundle.
Can I access 2014 handbook as well? I saw online it that it’ll say “legacy” but what does that mean? Outdated?
Supposed to be backwards compatible right…
So could I access old subclasses?
The 2014 Players Handbook is a separate product and thus a seperate purchase.
Gotcha
So if I wanted to make a character with the new rules but older subclass…..I couldn’t
Or would have to purchase both books
You could use the 2014 materials found in the 2014 free rules but otherwise you'd have to own both books or be in a DnDBeyond campaign with content sharing or if you had a physical 2014 Players Handbook you could use the DnDBeyond homebrew tools to recreate things.
Alrighty thank you
Hey I've been interested in DnD for a while now no one in my area to really play it with any tips for online type sessions or places to find them I also travel for work and this would be a decent alternative to play video games as i usually can't take my pc
You can play D&D with just the free D&D rules, a character sheet (digital or paper), a way to roll dice (physical or digital), and a way to communicate with others
?tag new online

I only got into dnd last year and idk a lot about it

A quick question: When playing DnD online do people generally use their webcams or just mics? I don't have a dedicated webcam currently
Not that I have a massive sample size, but all of the groups I've played with have used voice only. I'd imagine a group wanting cameras enforced would say so.
What version is the 2014 game and what version is the current one? Is 2014 still supported?
The current version is 2024. 2014 is backwards compatible but no new official content is being made
They are both 5th edition, but you might hear 2024 called 5.5e
Thank you 🙂
Maybe a stupid question, but what exactly would you do to get friends in this game? I'm completely new here, and I kind of want to learn from others during the gaming process?
Are you asking how to get your friends to play DnD, or how to make friends while playing?
2nd option, how to make friends WHILE playing?
That already know some experience and is willing to take in newcomers?

hello all
hi
Hey do your abilities go up when you level up ?
Like dexterity modifier for example
Or anything like that
I know HP goes up
And you get another damage dice
It's not every level. Normally you may increase your ability scores whenever you gain the "Ability Score Improvement" feature, which involves taking the Ability Score Improvement feat
Ahh I see
Some other features and items may also increase your ability scores, such as the Barbarian's level 20 feature "Primal Champion" or the magic item Tome of Understanding
Oh ok, the character is a rogue and it said to just increase the hp. The extra damage dice, and there was a new attack learned
I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything
The HP was 8 before so now it goes to 16 right ?
I assume by damage dice you mean your hit point dice, the d8 for Rogues
Yes
So your HP doesn't go to 16, though it can. Your level 1 HP is 8 because level 1 characters start with Max HP equal to the highest roll of their hit die + Con mod.
After level 1, [you have the choice of rolling for HP or taking the average](https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#GainingaLevel.
- If you roll, you gain Max HP equal to 1 roll of your hit point die + your Con mod (i.e. 1d8+0)
- If you take the average, you gain Max HP equal to the average listed on your class page (or in the hyperlink above) + your Con mod (i.e. 5+0)
Ah I see, so I would have to roll an 8 to achieve 16 ?
Yup
Or just take the average what is provided ?
Ah ok, I’ll modify that next session
Thanks!
Quick question, would playing a Kenku be too tricky for a new player?
helloo, i rlly wanna play dnd but idk how to start? is there an online game for pc? (i am solo and would like to play with a group if possible)
hi guys, i'm new to dnd. the only 'experience' i have of it is playing bg3 but that's about it
Hey guys. Is Sorcerer and Blood Hunter good together
Same T_T
The first things I'd especially recommend would be:
-
Get accustomed to the general rules of the game
This would generally just be between what you can do in combat, what kinds of actions you can take out of it, making skill checks, etc. The Player's Handbook (Either the 5th edition 2014 or 2024 edition) should generally list out everything and some libraries that are big enough may have copies you can get lent out, though online resources can help as well^^ lotta good guides on Youtube these days -
Spend some time looking about what the gist of the classes would be like, and maybe a few playable species/races. While you don't have to get super detailed quite yet, definitely try figuring out what you'd like. Imo, Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, and Cleric can be some of the easier to start with, but if you wanted to look into other classes, it'd definitely be worth it too
Making your first character sheet should generally be a good first goal as a new player - it doesn't have to be a character you intend to actually play ingame, just one so you can get practice. There are a few tools like Roll20 (Builder + Virtual Table Top/VTT), D&D Beyond (Officially ran one by WOTC), or Aurora (Free on Windows - though only for the 2014 character stats), though having one handy would be a good milestone for getting accustomed to the character creation, and potentially just being able to do some basic smaller practice || @white depot @steep rune||
i used roll20 just now to make a charactyer\
i watched the tutorial videos in #learn-to-play to make her (i based her off of my OC who already has a backstory and such)
As for playing your first game, there'd be a fair few good options. If you're aware of any board game stores in your area, they may host some games, between either just letting players host their games, or organizing official events like Adventure League. If you were a student in a campus that'd have a TTRPG club, they might have events where DMs can pitch their games, or maybe they'd have a discord that'd post some game openings
Additionally, some online platforms would host some ways of playing D&D. AFAIK Roll20 (Bigger TTRPG hosting platform) would have some Looking For Game options on it. This server would have one as well, though many online forms would in general would potentially have some as well
im not sure id be willing to join an on campus club since im a full beginner, i've just watched a 2 hr long video of dnd and im super interested in playing myself
i am interested in getting to know how to use roll20 to play there, i joined the discord server but it seems nobody is using the vcs there
That's great to hear, that'd already be a pretty good first step and everything :) What kind of character is it?
Hmm yeah definitely getting that - can get a little intimidating without knowing anything. If it helps though, generally a lot of DMs do run games with beginners in mind^^ A few modules such as Lost Mines of Phandelver are definitely pretty newbie oriented and all cuz of that
her name is Lunaria and i've made her a druid, i created a custom race for her similar to harengon; my oc is a character i made based off of my bunny irl so i made most of her skills so that she could communicate with animals, i made strength her weakest trait and wisdom her best trait
i already have a lot of art of her and more on the way, so im looking forward to that 😄
are there any games i could join immedietly? i looked through roll20 but it looks like there are scheduled times for games and its like within a few days or so
Hmm the option I at least went with to get used to how Roll20 worked was just creating a private game and exploring a bit. While it would open up a few DM-oriented features and all that a player wouldn't need, at least interacting with different parts of the actual ingame interface would at least let you get prepared for an actual game
T_T
Hmm one that'd allow someone to join day-of might be a little difficult to find, generally tables would dedicate a specific day of the week to play, alongside a good percentage of DMs wanting at least some time to proof-read over character sheets and backstory^^
For a One-Shot adventure, you may have better luck
Maybe ask in #optimization. Though I would make sure to mention that you are a newbie. Otherwise you are going to hear a lot of confusing stuff.
I know nothing about multiclassing and even less about blood hunters so I cannot answer that.
Looking over the Blood Hunter rn, you theoretically could get a build for it, though you'd have to strech your abilities thin given Sorcerers are a Charisma caster and Blood Hunter uses Int for class abilities and still uses Str/Dex for weapons if I'm reading everything right
Tbf I have heard about people saying that newbies should avoid multiclassing. Up to you decide if this is worth it.
As I play will making a charcter become faster I feel like it takes a long time I really enjoy making the bagkstory and choosing my class just going through the requirements in the rules and writing down all the traits and proficiency bonuses takes forever
I use DnD Beyond rather than pen and paper so I can't answer that.
I'd say it gets a lot smoother after getting some fair experience in.
I still use character builders for 2014E just to save time, but yeah after making a few characters by pen it definitely smoothens out, especially for repeated class/race picks
No not particularly. Why did you want to multiclass the two?
Hi newb here would love some pointers and tips on how to join a group thanks 🫶
If you'd like to use this server to join a group check out #find-a-game for the instructions on how to!
I always had a liking to the Blood Hunters. After all hemokinesis and powers based on blood is a fantasy of mine
The first thing to keep in mind is that Blood Hunter isn't an official class, so you'd need DM approval to play it in a game.
After that, based on your comment I think going straight Blood Hunter would suit you better since you hadn't mentioned a mechanical goal.
It's important to note that multiclassing is almost entirely a mechanical choice, not a narrative one. It's something to use towards a goal rather than be a goal in-and-of itself. Generally if you have to ask yourself "should I multiclass?" the answer is no.
There's some layers as to why a BH/Sorc multi isn't very good, but at the newbie level the main issue is that it needs 13 in 3 different ability scores which spreads your available stats thin (e.g. when using Point Buy / Standard Array)
Hi, I'm new to dnd and just got myself a 2024 phb and have a question about it. Should I read the entire book of PHB before I join a campaign or should I read specific chapters in order to join?
It wouldn't "hurt" to go ahead and try to read most of the PHB at least once.
Ok....so I choose another one. Among Wizard, Cleric and Rogue which is better with Sorcerer?
If I multiclass
I'd read the introduction, chapter 1, and chapter 2. The rest you can read as needed. The entire book would be overkill.
If not then I go with Just Sorcerer
alright, entire book first then. Thanks!
...mm.. Rogue would be my pick honestly.. The Wizard would be pointless, Cleric would be too difficult.
I'll read the chapters you'd mentioned first then. Thank you so much!
Ooooh
Ooooh.......Ok then I will consider your advice about the Blood Hunter
Sorceror's get Bloodlines which can be fun and you mentioned a blood liking.. so. maybe that.
full Sorceror is pretty nifty on it's own anyways.
I agree that the whole book is a bit much, but at some point you probably should read all of it. Maybe not all at once. But all of the book nonetheless. eventually.
no rushing though.
Well I dunno what to choose between Sorcerer, Wizard and warlock so I was gonna create 3 characters based on each one. Then I saw the multiclass thing and the Blood Hunter intrigued me a lot
Bloodlines?
Depending on your system. yeah
Some of the subclasses had names like "Draconic Bloodline", though that nomenclature largely disappeared with the 2024 version of 5e.
Yeah, I'll read the essential first then get to the rest. Thank you!
:D
Well I don't see either at Dnd Beyond...how to get it please?
OOOOH so it not there?
What book?
Apparently not. You'd have to play a different version. ^^;
They are talking about the 2024 PHB
Ah no, it is, it's just called differently.
Draconic Sorcery
2024 player's handbook :3
None. They all run into the same primary issue as Blood Hunter, the thinning of your stat spread. Figure out a clear, manageable mechanical synergy you want first that only multiclassing can achieve
Oh
Then I go Sorcerer then....I go Blood Hunter for a second character Thx
Most of the time you are either dipping to steal a class feature you desperately want, or you are trying to qualify for some kind of prestige class..
Atm too busy to think a lot
I'd definitely agree. Even from a experienced player standpoint, I often prefer single classed characters.
And it's just less hassle to learn and to deal with as a new player. One class is complicated enough already.
If you "absolutely" must multiclass. Try it this way. Find a class you want to get to level 17. Then find a class that benefits that class within 3 levels.
If you can't, you likely don't need to multiclass.
All the while I'd also keep in mind that a lot of campaigns don't get to level 20. 8-12 is a fairly common endpoint for even longer campaigns.
hi, I wanna start playing dnd I always see campaigns and people playing it online and etc, was wondering how to get into it>? thank u !!

Best spells I should choose at DnD beyond for Sorcerer? I can get 4 cantrips(whatever that is) and 2 prepared spells
Heyaa, kinda new to DMing my own homebrew? I get the basics of the game and have watched some games and played a few myself, but still can't understand bonuses and character sheets for the life of me can someone pls help 🥲
Same here
New to DnD
Heyyy! I’m kinda new to dnd, but I’ve known about it for almost 4 years. I have no friends with the same interests and would love someone to talk nerd, I could totally use some more information on it. I do consider myself a noob to dnd sooo hmu if u wanna educate me LOL
If you have a specific question, people are happy to provide answers. As a general stopgap, I always recommend reading the "Playing the Game" section of the free rules, as it provides an explanation for most of the fundamental questions
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game
There is a good suggestion in the free rules:

Helloo everyone, I've never played dnd but I've known it since the pandemic, though I've watched some explanation on internet, but I'm still lost. Cuz I'm the typical of person that must experience it first so I could understand. Can anyone please explain to me where to start?

is it possible to grab a few newcomers from here and start a one-shot adventure here?
Yes but please use the Looking For Game channels to solicit and organize games as it's off-topic here. See #find-a-game to learn how to use the LFG channels.
thanks! wasn't sure if it was allowed at all, thats why i asked; its my first day learning about dnd and im very interested in getting to play a game
You could go through the #looking-for-dm channel and find D&D newcomers that you feel would fit well at your game and in their game post thread invite them to your D&D game.
How do I look to play with people?
actually, now that you mention it, why dont i see those channels on the left?
Because Discord loves to "hide" things to be "useful".
You can use id:browse to add them to your list.
Please read #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a D&D group/game.
Kinda too much to read. I made a character sheet anyone wanna help me rate it?
Folks in #character-discussion can review and provide feedback
Thx. Atm I am too busy to write out my backstory so I just focused Om what I could do first
Backstory aka ammo for the dm
Are the 2014 and 2024 editions compatible? My group got the 2014 books before the 2024 ones were released but couldn't really get together to play a game until now.
Yes, the core rules haven't changed much and most creatures and items described should slot right in.
What changed between releases?
Various bits: https://www.enworld.org/threads/heres-the-full-list-of-changes-in-the-d-d-2024-players-handbook.706503/
Weapon mastery is a thing, warlocks can have multiple pacts, grappling and hidden use some fixed DCs. Backgrounds now carry your starting ASIs instead of species.
Still roll a d20 and add some bits, still have HP and AC and spell slots.
Thank you 🙂
Question: what is the best way to spot other DnD fans in the wild?
lol great question, one i have no answer for, for we hide in plain site to awkward to show ourselves,,,,, well many of us that is... I on the other hand have like 5 or 6 D&D shirts i openly wear in public lol
Merch like shirts or keychains can help, but isn't a guarantee
Since not everyone carries that type of thing around
Throw a D&D term into a conversation and see if they understand you?
Question: I’m building a world that the players go to space, but after the first 3 arcs, how do I make all of the arcs interesting including the last one
Probably better to ask in #dm-discussion for advice
Thats very little information to go off, could you elaborate?
Also that
True
So, first my players are in a droughted city of water, then after the antagonist fixes the problem, their government tries to train them, but they are teleported somewhere before they can train, after they are transported, they see they are in a store and are prompted to work, but they see they materials they need are in monsters and they have to find out how to get out, they find the antagonist and fight him, but then they are transported again, this time to a blocky world (I wonder what this is 🤪) they adventure through this world and find the antagonist again, this time killing him spawning a growing black hole, our hero’s are transported back to their home planet and are prompted to save the universe by going into space.
YES
^^^^^^^
Well first off this feels like you're expecting the players to act a certain way in certain situations (like you expect them to just fight the "antagonist" who just saved the town?), so a word of warning; Be prepared for them to not do what you expect
But also even with mroe context, it's a bit confusing read, and not sure if space travel even comes into play here?
But also again, for DM advice would recommend #dm-discussion
SO CAN I JOIN A CAMAIGN
There is more lore, but that basically the gist
Check out #find-a-game for instructions on the LFG channels!
Well I mean it explains how you expect the start to go, but there really isn't any context of the world and intended story for others to give much of an input. I'm not sure there's a "gist" to be get 😅
Tbf as well. Beyond using the spell Wish, most things can't actually handle Black Holes.. not.. with any amount of reason at least.
idk how to join it didnt really say anything about it
follow the super easy to follow steps in #find-a-game once you do you can look through the liste available games and / or post your own information so DMs can find u
The general gist of the list is that you need to use the Looking for DM and Looking for Players channels to find people who have a spot in their table for you.
It does list channels to check, including #looking-for-players which contains posts by DMs that are looking for players, which you can psot in the included threads in order to join
Well, who said I wasn’t adding home-brewed idem, I have a fated deck of many things
Which is fair. I'm just saying.
Yeah

I need help creating a character. I'm very lost
I'm using DnD Beyond and I'm on the Abilities page looking at the Score Calculations section. I don't understand what to do with the modifiers.
It gives me an option to adjust the "Other Modifier." How do I decide how much to modifiy the ability?
When you enter numbers into the abilities the modifier score will be calculated automatically. You dont want to add any other modifiers.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Thanks
I'm sure this has been asked before, but is there any sort of virtual d&d? I'm thinking something akin to GameMaker but specifically for creating d&d campaigns?
Roll 20
D&D Beyond is the official one and Roll20 is HEAVILY supported and used by many
There are many other VTTs as well, such as Owlbear Rodeo (very easy to use) and FoundryVTT (very modular)
Oh did you see that physical one where you can use cards to move the character
Thanks! Checking those out!
are feats still tied to the levels you have in a particular class in 2024's rules?
Yes. Feats can normally only be acquired whenever you forgo taking the Ability Score Improvement feat which you only get at certain class levels
However, 2024 also introduces origin feats granted by backgrounds.
What decides armor class
The default Armor Class calculation is AC=10+[Your Dexterity modifier] when you're not wearing armor.
When you wear different pieces of armor, that changes to a calculation specific to that armor set. For example, Studded Leather armor's AC calculation is AC=12+[Your Dexterity modifier].
What's the difference between hit dice and hit points
Each class has a hit die (d6, d8, d10, or d12) that they use to calculate how many hit points they have.
The rogue, for example, has a d8 for the size of their hit die, and at level 1, they have 1d8 to use during a short rest to recover HP. Assuming a +0 CON modifier, they have 8 HP.
I messed up

Thank you whoever did that
So at each lvl up I would add an extra hit die?
You would, so you'd have 2d8 to use during a short rest. But your HP would only increase by either the average of 5 or you could roll, meaning you could only get 1 HP more or as many as 8.
Well 10 since I created a fighter
I was keeping with my rogue example, but the same logic applies: you get an extra HD in your class upon level up, and your HP increases by the average of your HD or you can roll it.
Thank you

Anyone wanna add me ti their group? I really wanna play hehe. My time zone is same with Singapore's
Question
So second wind says it once per short rest and resets on short rest
Does that mean that a long rest won't reset it and that I can't use it after a long rest or am I overthinking it
Everything resets on a long rest. Some abilities also reset on a short rest. So Second Wind resets on a short rest in addition to a long rest.
I can't find any with my time zone lmao T_/
Especially for online games, the exact time zone isn’t as important unless you have strict availability or only want to play games with people near your area.
Try expanding your search to games that translate to your availability in your timezone. for example, if you’re available Pacific Standard Time (PST) 12-6 pm, you could also join 3-9 pm EST games, 8 pm - 2 am BST games, etc
It seems to do stuff automatically. I can't figure out how to get it to proc
Keywords
Wait I can?
Oh....well.usually I can be online 3pm to 6pm Singapore time then 10 pm to 12 am Singapore time
Damn I am usually asleep at that time
Ouch..sorry
Besides being a newbie I also need to know now to play. I only saw a few sessions at Youtube
Well it's pretty easy when the dm says roll dice you roll dice
Aren't there 5 or more dices
6 or 7 depending
Still the damage mechanic is still hard to understand. Like 1d6 damage means i have to roll that dice andni get the damage based on the number?
More if the dm is about to hit triple digit damage
Hey, just joined the server a few moments ago. I've been playing in a campaign for a few months now but I'm still very much a newbie

Oh thanks!
How come people don't usually play vanilla dnd
yes
it means you roll one six-sided die
depending on what you attack with, there might be a bonus
Other than the obvious
I think plenty people do. Though depends on what you mean by vanilla I suppose.
Every group is different for sure.
My DM is running kind of a homebrew. Typical dnd format but with new gods and world he's created
Oh
Oh, setting-wise, there are many D&D settings in the first place anyway. There is the most famous setting by virtue of being most supported officially, which is the Forgotten Realms. But there are many other official ones too, like Dragonlance, Eberron, Greyhawk, Birthright, Ravenloft, basically all MtG settings and so forth.
All dm worlds still use all the typical dnd roles right? Also which core rules do you all follow? I see there are 2
I think the feywilds are cool
Most of the time. Often, settings have some extra rules, like extra spells. Sometimes even extra classes. For example, the artificer class used to be eberron exclusive.
But the core rules are the same.
And races as well
Oh...
The feywilds aren't so much a setting as they are a setting feature (they're a plane of existence). Many settings include their own versions of the feywilds, if I recall correctly.
Still a cool place to go
Does the Underdark count as a plane of existence?
The Underdark is a location within the Forgotten Realms setting.
Ahh I see
Last place I wanna go to is anywhere there are drows
Havent come across any drow yet, just lots of undead
Anyone who worships a spider god is a nope on my list
Oo that is a nightmare lmao
Some advice to new players: falling rubble is dangerous always wear a helmet.
Pretty sure the only way for lvl 20 players to truly die is a giant boulder

hey i'm a pretty new player (played 1-2 unserious campaigns with friends, listen to dnd podcasts) and i think i'd like to try dming after i get some more experience. My friends assure me that no I won't like it because of the work/time commitment involved with it but I still would like to try. So just a question to all dms, how did you start dming?
That's it, yeah. 1d6 is one roll of a d6, and the number that comes up. Think of them like a formula for RNG. So each time you read up to that, you roll the appropriate amount of the die size given.
So when your longsword deals 1d8 (plus a modifier) damage, each time that happens, you roll a d8 and get a number from 1 to 8, then add the modifier if any, and that's the total damage.
Or for most spells, like with a fire bolt when you first start that just does 1d10, whenever you hit and deal damage with it you'd just roll a d10, get that number from 1 to 10, and that's the damage you dealt.
Helloo I'm very new to DnD (only watched videos and a few podcasts) and I wanna learn more on how to play! Mainly, I'm interested in character building and learning about roles in DnD so any tips would be helpful
Hello People.
In terms of how to play, it's a collab story telling. You ask "can I do this" and the DM says yes or no with caveats, the rules being a loose framework to guide decisions.
In practice every game is so different from each other because of DM input
As for building a character, what do you want to know
I'm the same
When building your character's background, are there certain rules or limits for what U can write or whatnot? Like for example: I write that my character's father is actually the final boss or something- Is it allowed? Do I need to discuss with DM first? How crazy exactly CAN I go with my characters origin?
hah yeah I feel like most people get into DnD like that too
I keep seeing videos about it and it just interested me and I have the starter kit and about 3 sets of dice already
dang All I have is the starter manual I found online and a WIP character sheet
Your narrative needs to align with your DMS narrative.
There are no rules against it and a lot of DMs would be open to this
But talk to them about campaign related backgrounds
Ohhh I see, thanks!!
I just need to find people to play with, I cant travel places much because of work and not sure where around me has any games but I have the D&D Beyond app
There is some pre made campaigns u can play with basically no prep
U can just use anything to be in the place that the players and npcs are and everything is just made for you
Just read through the book b4 then and run what it says
Can I have someone help me with a char sheet in dms?
It's feasible but of course the only answer we can give is ask your DM.
Certain times, a Lich that's 500 years old might not be so viable to be the father of, say, an 80~100 year lifespan human. Or alternatively, eldritch beings, dead gods, dragons, etc, could also possibly be the Big Bad Evil Guy (BBEG) and just as non-viable.
So, you need to discuss with your DM, but otherwise a backstory typically doesn't include stuff beyond the character's capabilities as they begin the game, whatever level they start at.
Many DMs in my experience would be eager to jump at the chance for some backstory involvement like that, so don't fret too much but also don't dive too deep.
Hi there is there any one willing to let a new player try dnd for the first time
And still need a player to play??

What is the attack bonus for spells?
That depends on your class. In general it will be:
- your Proficiency Bonus + the spellcasting modifier of the class granting you that spell
How would I know what spells I could cast or what ones are compatible
And do spells have a damage bonus like weapons?
Can someone explain part of the Character Sheet to me? I'm lost and not sure what they mean
Im kind of new to dnd but I've dm'd and played with a ton of friends and I was wondering, how and where do I find groups to play with online?
Every class has a spell list. Depending on your level, you are allowed to choose a selection of those spells as ones you know. (Works differently if you are a wizard)
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Welcome! You can follow the above instructions for finding groups online
Unless specifically stated (mainly through class features), a spell does not receive a damage bonus like weapons
I can help with your character sheet
It's kind of a pain, there are spell lists online where that information is consolidated
same, I don't really fully understand what bonuses are yet? Like, how they work n stuff
When you make a test that uses an Ability Score like Strength or Dexterity, the bonus is what you add to the d20 roll.
The result is then compared to the Difficulty Class or DC which is a number set by the Dungeon Master. If you get equal or higher than that number you succeed in the task.
ohh Ok, so how do u get bonuses?
From 5 possible sources:
- Your stats
- Your proficiency bonus
- Your character options
- Your items
- Certain conditional features set on you (e.g. some spells)
Any given d20 test will always have the relevant ability modifier apply (from your stats)
The rest are up to the specific d20 test you’re trying to make in the event they apply
Awesome Thanks!!
so as an example if i want to pull open a locked door what would i need to look at
Your DM will call for the relevant skill check if they feel a check is needed.
In this case, an Athletics (Strength) check may be called
what's considered weak AC? Like, lower than 15?
Guessing that would be when you roll and add the number next to Athletics to the roll
So it would be a d20 plus your Athletics mod which is equal to your Strength modifier.
- If you’re proficient in Athletics you’d add your Proficiency Bonus
- If you had a feature, item, spell, etc that would add/subtract from the roll you’d do so
What’s considered a good AC is dependent on level. 15 is fine for early-mid level gameplay
14 is certainly on the weaker side but should be ok at low levels
A starting adventurer probably wants to ensure they have at least 14 in AC. More is better, but it's a team game. If you're useful your party will protect you.
What is one attribute that "isn't too bad" being low? or does it vary on class and play style
Strength for most spellcasters, Charisma for most fighting types.
I’d also add in Intelligence for everyone except Wizards, Artificers, and a select few subclasses
I have a rogue in my lineup that dumped Intelligence and invested in Charisma. They don't need to know facts when the lies are more entertaining.
What's the difference between Wisdom and intelligence aren't they basically the same
I made a rouge druid
A multiclass to start? Just make sure your future DM approves it, especially with how complex multiclassing can be
And make sure you’re following the rules for multiclassing
i have that and just a druid
Ah 2 characters
prob just use the Druid to start, need to learn easier with 1 class
Oh I didnt join a campaign yet since I hadn't found one that's suitable for me but I just made a Rogue as like, a practice character?
Yeah multiclassing is not something we recommend for newbies. It’s deceptive in how “simple” it is
What i done, i liked just creating the character but realistically i'd use single before multi class
yeah making characters are pretty fun lol
My Playstyle in games varies way too much and i can't decide how i want a character
Yeah honestly Im still here trying to figure the rules of DnD so if I'm joining a campaign I'd just use a simple character first to figure how I want to play
Can you start with a character who has memory loss and regains as they go along with the DM hinting at what the character can do?
Wisdom is common sense every day smarts or street smarts. Intelligence is book smarts, learned/ taught to you kind of smarts
that's a really cool idea, I thought of that briefly as well!! It'd be interesting and also fun playing a character like that lol
would the DM have to come up with essentially your character though
It's a classic amnesiac plot. It leaves lot of the planning for the DM while also giving them a lot of freedom, so definitely would ask them first
I personally love it, as long as I've given the freedom to do what I want 😏
Probably best for new players like myself as i don't know whats good or not
Narratively that could be a way to flavor your level ups.
But yeah it does naturally put more work on the DM to come up with a backstory for you. It's something to discuss with them for sure.
Something to still keep in mind though, is that it does still require the player to actually interact and play along with what the DM will give you, and not just expect the story to be fed to you doing nothing
I think starting it off would be confusing for me but i could essentially "try and fail" as my character re-learns who they are and what they can do
I feel it would be layering an unnecessary level of complication to your first experience. You don't have to know a lot to get started! You grew up in a place of little importance, you developed some skills and some wanderlust, you went adventuring.
Then you can learn the game itself without the extra part of your character missing their identity.
Thats what i was thinking, instead of being "spoon fed" by the DM with the whole character
hi
Hi
What's good will be what fits in the DM's world. It can be hard to make a backstory that feels appropriate, especially before you've joined a game. My advice for writing a good backstory is:
- Answer the 3 essential questions. Who are you? Where did you get your powers? Why are you adventuring?
- Keep it appropriate to your level. Most campaigns start at level 1. While you're more skilled than the average commoner, you're not an army-slaying bane of man, dragons, and demons (yet).
- The adventure is ahead of you, not behind. The majority of cool stuff for your character should happen during the campaign, not before.
- Be someone others want around. D&D is a cooperative storytelling game. While edgy, evil, criminal, and similar behavior can be fun, it's less fun for your party if not everyone is on board. Uncooperative, hostile, or otherwise problematic behavior can easily slip the guise of "Roleplay" and just make the game unfun for people. While a well-rounded character has flaws it's important to ask "why would a party keep my character around?"
- Avoid specifics until you can work with a DM. The more detailed your backstory the more work the DM has to do in order to integrate your backstory into the world. A small village is easy, but following a custom deity or being part of a custom kingdom has world-spanning implications. Keep it general. For example "Rienne was a soldier in the Red Leaf Brigade of the Elyian Elven Kingdom" is harder to integrate than "Rienne was a soldier in an elven kingdom"
That is very helpful, I've not actually come up with the backstory yet
Can an experienced rogue help me out with learning all that I need to know?
Sneak Attack. Read it carefully. Your goal is to set it off every time you have the chance.
Skills, you've got lots. Be useful, be creative. Tell your DM about your goals and work with them to get where you need. Don't say, "I lurk in alleys to find the thieves guild," but ask "as an experienced criminal type, how would I get in touch with the local thieves?"
thank you sm!
Oh, and never steal from your party.
okay!
I need to confess I first learned about DnD from stranger things😭
Nothing wrong with that
Hellooo!
Hi yall!!! Um, I am kind of new to this (I have played dnd but like 2 years ago for a few months), where do I find ppl to play with online?
Hunt them down and force them to play with you
Isnt that a bit rude to do though?
Hmmmm….
hi guys, ive been really wanting to play dnd for a long time
i want to be a dungeon master because im the one that always plans times and stuff, and ive got a few friends who are willing and are also wanting to play dnd
i have a few important questions,
- how do you start a campaign?
- how can i teach my friends to create a character?
- how should i start from pre-written adventures, and can test sessions just be a singular pre-written adventure?
- how does the turn order work when youre out of combat?
by starting a campaign i really mean how, like what do i even do

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
place dice under a box propped up with a stick with rope round it, when someone grabs the dice, pull the stick away
That is a good way to catch people to play with you, I have personally utilized this
They’re now stuck in a months long campaign
wow, I should try that
Or you can use the Looking for Game channels here to find a group to play with
if that doesn't work, a big club
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Noooo… That can’t be, there must be a better way
Roll20, Demiplane, other game forums/sites may also have LFG features to find a game
My preferred method is to gaslight them into thinking they had already agreed to play with me in the past, and then also proceed to tell them that they has already made a character before, then they'll either get confused or pissed, I continue to talk to them about our previous conversations where I had brought up DnD and gaslight them into thinking they did actually promise to try it out a few months ago, ultimately leading to the satisfying response of a defeated "Fine, I'll play"!!
Then use the club
to knock them out? Brilliant!
just to seal the deal and make sure they don't change their mind
If a chameleon wasn’t broke i’d get the books for more subclass options
hey guys, I'm new to this and have been interested in dnd for about a month now. So can anyone help me learn the game and find somewhere to play it?
Same any plans for winter campaigns ?
?
Check out #learn-to-play for useful resources to get started, and #find-a-game when you feel ready to find a game!
There's Rime of the Frost Maiden, a popular very winter themed adventure
I want to play a campaign anyone have one going on
Check #looking-for-players
Check out #find-a-game
good for first time or do I look for something simpler?
Closest simpler one I can think of is Dragon of Icespire peak, from the essentials kit (which is basically a beginner campaign), which while not directly winter themed, is either pretty close, or very easy to make so 🤔
How exactly do I find people to play that with?
Check out #find-a-game
alr thanks
hey I seem to be unable to message in 'looking for dm' how do I do that?
#find-a-game contains instructions for using the channels, including the commands you need to use
oh ok
If i have a longsword and my str is +2 and my proficiancy is also +2. do i get a +4 to my hit/dc if im proficient in martial weapons?
Im realy new to dnd and im trying toi understand the dmd beyond thing
Yep, you're correct
Nice thanks. is the hit/dc my dmg or to check if i hit the enemy?
The latter
There's a separate roll for damage
Okey nice, that will only be +2 right? becuase my str is +2
When you make an attack, you roll d20 and add the modifier you use (strength for most melee), and proficiency if you're proficient with the weapon
So you'd add +4 to the roll, and if you hit you then deal the damage based on the weapon, adding the ability modifier you used to the damage, but not your proficiency
Sorry im kinda slow :p
But if i have it right, I throw a d20 and add +2str and +2prof (because i have martial weapon)
so if i roll a 11 i will get a 15 to hit the guy
And then i throw a new dice to see the dmg. so if i roll a 3 i will add +2 and get 5 dmg?
Exactly correct
And you will hit the enemy with that if their AC is 15 or lower, to add 😛
Ahh okeii, so i only have to match the AC not go over?
Match at the minimum or go over
Is it the same for me? the enemy only need to match mine
Correct
Whoever is making the roll only has to match or be higher than whatever they are rolling against
Also how do dodging/blocking work, do i need to match their hit dice?
Yeah that make sense
Dodge is an action you can take on your turn, which gives disadvantage on any attacks against you until your next turn
There is no mechanic for that. AC is basically equivalent to blocking and dodging
I only played 1 seasion and i didnt understand haha
There isn't "blocking" per se. Closest thing being the Shield Spell, or class features that might let you do something similiar, though I cant recall one off the top of my head
Ahh okeii. maybe thats only some rule they have made
I flavor misses or hits as the dm as you got yer shield up just in time or you dodged out of the way like a nimble cat.
Or the sword gets past your blocking shield drawing blood
I think i understand now. They where dodging and blocking everytime so i think its some made up rule for them. Maybe thats why i didnt understand anything from what i read/watched on YT
Most likely the enemy never met their AC, so the DM would have described the misses as blocking and dodging, to make it more interesting than just repeating "you miss"
I will ask my friend about it next time i see him to understand it better,
Ahh yeah that make sense too
Atleast i understand the attack and modifiers a bit better now
When it comes to spell attack bonus, what does that do?
nvm, forgot i had google. it explained realy good :p
D20 + spellcasting modifier+ proficiency
When your spell includes an attack roll, you would add your spellcasting modifier, and proficiency bonus. Basically same as weapon attack
nvm i need you guys hehe
Although unless I'm forgetting some exception, unlike with weapons you are always proficient with spells
Think of it as working the same way as a weapon attack roll. But instead of str or dex, you use your spellcasting modifier
Not all combat spells use an attack roll though. Always check the wording.
where do i find my spellcasting modifier?
It is mentioned in your class features
Or if you do not have a spellcasting class, it's generally included in the way which you gained the use of the spell, like a feat or magic item
Okey make sense, thats why my cleric have +5 because i have +5 wis
if i understood it right?
Yep
Smooth. i think thats all the questions i have for now 😄
Thanks for all the help!!
Depends. My sessions are 6 hours on average
Somewhere between 2 and 4 hours tends to be the usual length, though depends entirely on the game and its players / DM
yeah its usually 2-4 hours but some tables like to have longer sessions
I was aparently not finish hehe. Do the enemy have to match my spell save DC to stop my spell? or go over
and the other way around
Match the DC
They have to meet the DC or go higher to avoid the effects of the spell that come from failing the save
okey so if my spell save dc is 13 they need to hit 13 or higher?
Yep
Thanks 😄
I created a new lvl 5 character but they only have one attack. Is that right?
Barbarian
-
Are they only Barbarian or are they a multiclass?
-
By “one attack” what do you mean? Like your sheet is only showing 1 attack?
1.Not multiclass.
2.Under "attack" on my sheet is just says "unarmed strike" and nothing else.
An Extra Attack is listed under Features. Attacks are based on what weapons you mark as equipped (in DDB).
Yeah Extra Attack doesn’t give you 2 independent options “Attack 1” & “Attack 2.” It simply allows you to attack twice per Attack action
So for example if you’re a greataxe wielding Barbarian you’d just be able to use the same attack option twice
I just played my first session yesterday
Ok so all is good, I didn't do anything wrong with my character creation?
Doesn’t seem like it. Just make sure you equip your weapons if you’re not planning on running an unarmed barbarian
If you’re making your Barb on D&DBeyond it should be as easy as clicking the box to the left of the weapon on the inventory tab.
On a physical sheet you’d just need to write down the relevant weapon information in the “attacks” box
assuming you are low level it's probably +3 wisdom and +2 the other thing i think is proficiency bonus
i might be totally misremembering
Its lvl 5 cleric. I joined some friends mid campain so my first season didn’t go so well hehe. Would maybe be easier to start at lvl 1
Hi
Hi
hiii, im really new on d&d can someone help me with the basics?
hey good afternoon/(morning depending where u are)
I need urgent help for my char sheet
dnd 20 wont let me export my sheet any tips?
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

oh, thank u so much
There's always D&D Beyond. Sheets made there can be exported as PDFs, if you want to take them elsewhere or offline.
Otherwise, screenshots? Roll20 doesn't seem super easy to directly export from at a glance.
Yo guise just joined :) ive played one game of dnd before, going to join the dnd club at my school. Any tips?
yeah 20 doesnt seem user friendly
but beyond is OK
hey
im new here and im looking for a group to play with
Does someone search for a new player?
can i join a group?
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
I can send the PDF and the photo of my character? it's a prototype (and my First) and I wanted to ask if it was decent
Beyond was upgraded to 1D&D I think. If your using beyond in a 5e campaign your character will be unbalanced, just a heads up
Is there typically a few, more casual dnd games? I don't have set schedule with work so my availablity from week to week differs
thats when ya tell work ya can no longer do sundays lol
If only😫
ive spotted a few games that are casual, but most tend to have a schedule because of the many players with different schedules to em
Yah you need a schedule for sure else people are just gonna plan other things
What's your timezone
GMT
Ah nvm
Servers that are west march style are what you’ll want to look for. Some of them work that way but not all., Also play by text or play by post tends to not worry about schedule
Ello, i'm wondering where i can get players for my first campaign. can anyone help?
Check out #find-a-game
Alr! done. did i do it right? im worried i did it wrong.
Might wanna clarify the time zone in the thread. 3-6 pm by itself is meaningless
Ohhh thats TIME zone T_T
if ya use discord timestamp for the time it will just translate it for everyone to thier timezone
https://discordtimestamp.com/
I thought it was what time i run it T_T
Sure but your timezone may not be my timezone...
I mean when you ru nthe game at say 3 pm, it's gonna be different time elsewhere in the world, and nobody knows what your time zone is unless you mention it
So you kinda need to mention both, the time you run it, and your time zone (Or use the tool included when you use the command to set a time that shows up the right time automatically for anyone based on their own time)
yeah i start at 10:30am sunday most of my players are starting at 8:30pm the saturday
can get confusing and not everyone (myself included) are good at figuring out time zones so using the timestamp tools is something most should try to do. (just makes life easy for everyone.)
Alr. i added my timezone i think.
Yep - nicely done!
hellu
i’m new to dnd(as in never even played before)
anyone that got some tips or stuff i should check out?
i have no clue what i’m doing so
i know how the basics of dnd work, but that’s about it..

Hello
Great info in those links and ask questions after you looked em over. No need to be shy here
Im confused about the new changes to classes.
Is there a channel where they can look at my character and tell me if I made mistakes?
Yeah we have #character-discussion for folks to discuss characters, character builds, and get and provide feedback.
Check #channel-guide to see all our many channels for specific D&D topics.
Thx
Do you have a specific change you've noticed that is confusing? You might also want to check with folks in #dnd-discussion as this channel is specifically for new to D&D folks to get help learning the core D&D rules and mechanics.
So... why is rangers so focused on Hunter's mark? The 2024 rules
Thats not really a newbie question since it’s a game design question. You’d find better help in #dnd-discussion , but you probably wouldn’t get a definitive/official answer unless you asked a game designer directly
Whenever my two friends are arguing I would always say "Roll Initative" - They shush me afterwards 🙏🏻😔
But, ye: D&D’s pretty fun once you find the right party to run with
Hi everyone,
I'm completely new to D&D and I am so excited for what is coming😁
I also a little bit nervous 🤭
And sorry for my broken English, English is my second language 😅
Welcome
Does hair count as an unarmed weapon?
Not unless your name is Sindel...
or Bayonetta I guess
In short: Potentially.
While using your hair to make an unarmed strike isn’t listed in the examples, your DM may determine it to count. You’d just need to convince them it counts as a “similar forceful blow”
I wanna play bayonetta!
would anyone be able to help me get a campaign started?
Ready to join a campaign but never played. Helppppp
same^
Hi there guys
Hey
Good morning
What u two up too?
Where do I make a thread in the looking-for-… channels again?
It works via command. #find-a-game explains how.
Oh I didn't consider that thanks!
Nobody can directly. Posts are created via command. #find-a-game explains.
Who is Ekko? sounds like a question for #character-discussion or #homebrew as it’s not really the basics
Imma resend there
Hi, any newcomers want to learn dnd together. I've only played a few games, so it would be nice to learn the game with someone.
Hi everyone :3 I don't think there's an "introductions" channel so I'll do so here. I've known about this game for a while and think both it and its players are actually pretty chill. I'm still on the "reading instruction manual and am confused about the character classes" phase, so if I ask a really stupid, common knowledge question, I do apologise in advance. Anyway, ✌️
Hello i would like to do a dnd game
Hi, everyone. I was just wondering if anyone has any good guides that they use. And they wouldn't mind sharing. Thanks. (Dyslexic friendly)
I've just been using the D&D beyond website to be honest, granted I'm new to D&D but it's helped somewhat. Just takes time to go though everything

@wheat hearth @junior plover @signal meteor Take a look at these ^
Tysm!!
Thx
Thanks, but that is way too much writing. I'm dyslexic, so I find it hard to read lots of text bunched together.
You did see the link to the introductory videos yeah?
Yea, but I have to have it written down as my memory is bad. It's complicated.
Bullet pointed what each thing is used for and how it affects something else?
Bookmark the videos and re-watch them as needed?
Yea, that is what I've started to do.
The basic rules via DnDBeyond are also bookmarkable and even have a very handy glossary.
That what i'm using
What is the Hit Die?
So every class has a hit die - for example a fighter has a d10 hit die.
Every level up, they add another hit die to their pool of hit dice
So at level 2, a fighter has 2d10 hit dice
The character can use these hit dice during a short rest to recover hit points
No - as in they have a pool of hit dice they can use to recover hit points during short rests
So for example a 5th level fighter has 5d10 hit dice
Let's say the fighter has lost about 20 hit points in various combat and now the party has a chance to take a short rest (1 hour of light activity).
The player running the fighter would tell the DM they are going to expend 4 of their 5 d10 hit dice to regain hit points.
The player rolls the d10 dice 4 times, and takes the results and adds that back to their hit points.
Also add the constitution modifier * number of hit die spent
Good catch - yes add your constitution modifier to each hit dice rolled.
So if your constitution ability score is 14, you would have a +2 modifier for constitution
And you have more hit points in general, and if you are concentrating on a spell if you are damaged you have higher chances of making a success
i have 10 i think, so with the constitution i would have 27 hit points?
So at level 1 you get your hit die max + constitution modifier as your total hit points.
At level 2 you would take the average roll of your hit die (for a fighter that would be 5 as they have a d10 hit die) and then add your constitution modifier of 2 and end up with: 10+2 (level1) + 5+2 (level2) and have 19 total hitpoints.
How your hp is determined = hit point dice. We just use a number of dice to say how much hp you have.
For healing, you don't get maximum healing but you roll those dice, whatever number you get + 2
By the way these are great questions!
Thou habt, a hit point dice = d10.
Thou habt a constitution score = 15
See the small number below the 15, it is +2.
So formula for healing by short rest= d10+2
#ddb-avrae-commands message due to random factor etc, this time you would get 4 hp for example
hurting my brain trying to understand this, i'll look over it again. Thanks for the help
I am waiting for join my first campaign, there's so many being announced!
Does it not round up (level 2 fighter gets 6+con)
I tested it and thats what I got
Oh hmmm. Yes you are correct. Because the average of a d10 is 5.5. So round up to 6 and then add the constitution modifer... yes you are correct.
Good morning adventurers. I spoke friend and entered! 🙂 I’m looking for a group to relearn the game. I was pointed here and am looking at the pinned messages but if anyone has any openings feel free to DM me
Hello!
#looking-for-dm #looking-for-players have a look here for games
Follow the easy steps in #find-a-game first to gain access to the channels u can look at and post your own needs on
Thank you I don’t know what I don’t know.
Im trying to download a pdf of my character sheet but it wont let me
Im trying to print it out and im using a phone
What tool or webstite did you use to make the character sheet that you want to download the PDF from?
How do I set up a looking for dm thing?
Where can i look for other people and a dm for playing sessions?
Go to your character sheet and you should see a little cog symbol, press that and gives you an option to open as a PDF
It does it’s found after you click the cog on your character sheet
Or you click the 9 red squares and open on webpage and get a pdf link there
That's still technically opening it in the website, but fair enough.
The cog is from the app
#find-a-game message I can't type in lf dm channel
So i just press on the command in this message?
What does gish mean?
Most characters are either martials (focused on weapons) or spellcasters (focused on spells).
Gish is a term for characters that try to do both.
So War Domain Clerics, College of Swords Bards, Hexblade Warlocks, etc.
Gish more like fish
Hey guys, is there a channel where I can look for one-shots specifically?
There isn't, unfortunately, but you can filter which channels you look at and can include keywords to limit your results.
If you looking for oneshots here are a few:
dragon delves has plenty to pull from since it’s an anthology.
Tales from the yawning portal
Ghost of salt march
Infinite quests from the stairs
Aka any anthology
Hello, I am new here
I think they were talking about playing one. Though in that case, if there's any Adventurers League games advertised around them, those tend to be one shots
Yeah
I have a request for anyone who has the time, I think I’m asking to much but, would anyone be willing to help me make a dnd character?
People don't usually have time to walk you through every step, but if you have questions on any specific parts, folks are happy to answer

The character link above may help as well
What channel has the info on submitting a character?
If you're looking for feedback on a character, #character-discussion is the place. Not sure what you mean by "submit" a character, though!
Other servers have specific requirements for submitting characters before allowing anyone to play, like making a character within the server using specific apps and such. If a character isn't created as the server requires than the character is rejected.
We don't play on the server, so there's no submissions like you're talking about. Whether your character is acceptable or not depends on the specific table you join.
So if I create a character on D&D Beyond and bring it here I can join pretty much any table?
Not necessarily. I tend to recommend you join a table and then create a character so you abide by their parameters. Plus, you'll fit better with the group/world.
Got it, can you recommend a beginners table, as I am just now getting back into the game and prefer to start with a lower level character and build them up.
You'll need to look in #looking-for-players to see what's available
And not everyone specifies they're open to beginners, so it's worth asking.
This server doesn't directly match people together or set up games like that. That's what the looking channels are for.
ok, thanks
what is a proficentcy bonus and how dose it work on dnd beyond?
a proficiency bonus is essentially a bonus to rolls with checks that you are... well... proficient in.
For example, let's say you're proficient in Investigation. If you're at Level 1, you'd have an extra +2 to that specific roll (example: if you rolled a 10, you plus 2 to it, so it becomes a 12)
but only once right?
Unless you have a specific feature saying otherwise.
It's a number that's added to many of your rolls. It also increases as you get higher in level.
Rolls in Beyond usually automatically apply your proficiency bonus.
actually no! You get to keep it as long as your character is still alive
you might be confusing that with Inspiration
The proficiency bonus applies to any relevant roll once (barring any ability that allows you to add it twice). But you don't "use" the bonus and it's gone; you still have proficiency.
Let's try an example. All level 1 characters have a +2 proficiency bonus. You roll Stealth, which you chose to be proficient in. You roll a 13. Assuming no other bonuses, your total is 15. But you wouldn't apply that +2 multiple times.
ohhhh i'm learning as well
didn't know it only counted on the first roll
so for example if i have it in perception i add +2 on every perception roll?
Correct.
like every every
Yes. Proficiency is a mechanical way to show you're better at certain things. Like you'd generally roll better with proficiency in X than someone without a proficiency in it.
okay is it included with the roll button on dnd beyond or do i have to add it myself?
It's added when you press the bonus near a skill, attack, or saving throw. It's not added automatically for every roll, though, as there are multiple buttons on DDB to roll dice.
okay thank you so much
Hey! Nice to meet you all! Completely new player here, done one session with my brother as DM and a friend playing with me. Just doing a one shot to get into it. (My brother runs a few other sessions as a DM). I've currently made a human rogue but would like to understand the character / skills a bit more. Any tips?

anything specific?
welcome! The bot post above is our typical welcome message, with information to help people get started. But it sounds like you've already taken the first steps. If you have any specific questions, we'd be more than happy to help with them
Honestly, I'm not too sure. First session felt pretty cool, was a bit slow with only two players and a DM but still was fun to engage in the adventure.
Most things seem quite straight forward and a lot come with imagination. I guess if anything, was just looking for some conversations with others as it feels like this is a "the more you play, the more you'll get it" style thing?
honestly? It's like that with a LOT of things in DND.
Rogues tend to be good hit-and-runners once they get their cunning actions
I think in our session the other day, we spent 40 minutes looking around the area although there was nothing else there 😂 .
gotta be thorough hehe
also they tend to be good members for Dex checks if you chose to have a high dex build for them
At some point, the GM should be able to step up and say "there's nothing interesting in the area" before moving on
Haha. I think where it was our first game and we've all known each other a very long time, he was being a little more "the whole game is about your imagination" (for context the GM is my oldest brother and the other player is his best friend).
Are there any other characters that you would recommend for newcomers? Might join a couple of random one shots to get more of a taste
Martial classes (fighter, rogue, barbarian) have a smaller learning curve compared with spellcasters, but you should play what sounds fun, especially if you're willing to put in the work to understand what your abilities can do!
Hey, is it possible to do half orc & half elf?
As in one character thats half orc and half elf? Mechanically no, but nothing stops you from saying your half elf or half orc is half the other race
Then is it possible to do a half orc sorcerer
absolutely. Half Orc is a species, and sorcerer is a class. Any species can play as any class
Hm, what about a half elf barbarian
Sure.
Again, any race can be any class. There are no limitations
What about a Bugbear Artificer
Is it possible to do a Tarraque race?
Not an existing race, no
Tarrasque is not a playable species option
My cousin keeps wanting to be a tarrasque
Your species is chosen from a list of species that have specifically been designated as playable options. You don't get to pick whatever you want
How should I tell them then
I don't think it needs to be any more complicated than "a tarrasque is not a playable species option."
You have to pick something from the list of available options, and tarrasque is not on that list
Maybe try to figure out what part of that they're interested in and then suggest alternatives
Theyre interested in the power
Then you might need a conversation about checking their expectations
D&D is not a game about running around as an unstoppable monster
Tell him to be the DM.
DM gets to play all the fun monsters 😏
This is why being the DM is the best, I get all the fun toys.
Are you the GM?
you get all the fun toys, and you get to facepalm at all the ridiculous solutions
What do you mean by that
I’m a player
