Yayy
Just got done creating a character it's been so long since I've used DND beyond 😭
So how do I get started with dnd?
#learn-to-play has some helpful links to get you started, but did you have any specific questions about the game?
are you from the 808 spamandtuna
I don’t know where that is, so no. 😅
what even is “the 808” lol
never heard of that
area code for hawaii
ah
Hi!
hi
Whats up
hehe i also have an interesting name
How do you even say that
To learn how to play the game I recommend flipping through the Basic Rules linked in this channel's pins as well as #learn-to-play . Try making a practice character to help, and feel free to ask any questions here!
As for finding a group, you can read through #find-a-game to learn how to use this server to find a group to play with!

Very long

Honeypot and I-avoidhaircuts. Would you like to start a DnD campaign to help you guys get the idea of how DnD works?
See here for my advice!

Sure
Make sure to use #find-a-game to organize games. Unfortunately solicitation outside of the proper channels is against server rules
@finite cliff that would be great tbh
My bad.
Sorry
Nw! Just wanna give a notice before / in case the mods step in

hello, i wanna ask whats the difference between traditional and community games?
Community games often involve a changing set of players and even DMs. They might be a shared world, such as with westmarches, or regular one shots.
Traditional games on the other hand normally involve a single adventure with a fixed group.
Can anyone dm or only specific people
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
Wasn't sure of whom you were referring to as another was asking to show his character sheet, so it seemed you were referring to that.
Aye I'm not playing a Rogue. I've decided to just manually write up by bits on an online character doc as obviously Beyond doesn't have all the updated bits.
Cheers.
So I'm making a human ranger right now on DnD Beyond and it says human race gives you something called Versatile. I have to choose between Magic Initiate (Cleric, Druid, Wizard), Savage attacker and skilled. Im confused as what it does for my character because i looked it up and found out it was a thing for weapons.
These are origin feats. Most of them have little to do with weapons (except savage attacker):
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/feats#OriginFeats
That versatile feature allows you to pick an origin feat. Magic initiate gives you some spells/casting features. Savage attacker gives you some extra damage. And Skilled lets you pick some additional skills/tools to be proficient in.
Versatile is also the term used for a weapon property, but this has nothing to do with the human species feature of the same name:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#Versatile
thanks game designers lol
yeah 😅
Thanks guys that helped out. I'm gonna continue making arthur morgan as a dnd character now
lol
Hi guys! Im kind of new to dnd I guess? I’ve played before but our dungeon master has always said that she’s not the most experienced and I’m hoping that someone is willing to play with me some time? If not it’s totally ok!
There is lfg stuff in this server somewhere
Is should b under the "find a game" section near the bottom
Thank you so much!
dnd seems so fun but my adhd ass can’t handle it being once a week on average like .. I’m prolly out of the mood to play and on an entirely different sleep schedule by then 😭
exaggeration but still
Join a one shot or something, idk man.
How do I get my character's appearance to be in the appearance tab? is it like copy the picture and the paste it to the tab in the character sheet?
That’s a txt box, if you go to the first tab in the character edit page you can upload a picture there
And about the character appearance, if I were let's just say to take some picture from let's just say Pinterest, where should I add the link and (if I can find it) the artist's name? For the picture's source of course.
@west thunder Dya mean for using a generic picture that represents your character in a Virtual Table Top?
I suppose
there is Heroforge
Ooo
you could create a dude and then take screens
Aye thx man
I've made a Firbolg Druid for mine 😄 I can't post it in this channel I don't think 🙁
yeah just take some general shots and maybe some close ups for battlemap tokens etc
Did ya manage to find a wee group at all?
I'm still looking around too. I almost got into a group on the Roll20 discord but the DM closed it lol

it is I
Hello everyone. Very new and rookie newcomer here. I have been roaming around D&D for a while now, but never actually had the chance to do a proper play myself (played a lot of D&D video games though). I was wondering what you guys would recommend as the easiest way to get in. I do have a D&D Beyond account, but not sure if I should aclimate myself to VTT, Sigil, Roll20 or any other one. Currently discovering this Discord and seems to be a great place to get in. Any suggestion is most than welcome. Thanks!
No sense in trying to get used to a Virtual Table Top program (VTT) before you've found a group to play with yet! If your DM decides you'll be using Owlbear Rodeo, for example, you'll have spent all that time clicking around in Sigil for nothing.
If you feel like you already have a good understanding of the basic rules, really the next step is to get started looking for a group! You can use #find-a-game to get your search started on this server.
DM/player checking in!
That's the thing. I'm living in Mauritius and so far, I have not found any group to play with locally. So it seems my first experience would be online through some sort of VTT?
Sure, there's no problem with playing online! Honestly, I think I can pretty safely say that most DnD is played online these days.
In the process of learning to play, is there any specific tools or combination of tools you would recommend to use?
I'll definitely go through the lfg section to connect with DMs and communities

Sure thanks
Thanks. Currently going through it atm.
Hello, im pretty confused as to how i should fill in the character appearance portrait. is there a program that lets me do that or do i just draw it myself (im bad at drawing).
Technically you don't have to fill it out at all. If you have a good reference picture, that works. But if not, no worries. It's just to give you/your DM/your fellow players an idea of what your character looks like.
I can also recommend websites like hero forge, which can help you build a visual of your character.
Oh alright, thanks for the info and recommendation
i was making statblocks for the campaign but i noticed the [STR 1] on the attack, what exactly am i supposed to add in that case?
(Unarmed Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: [STR 1] bludgeoning damage.)
On a hit, an unarmed strike deals bludgeoning damage equal to 1 + your Strength modifier. You are proficient with your unarmed strikes.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#DamageandHealing
Of course, a monster might use their own rules for an unarmed strike.

Hello
Check out the links above.
Ok
hi
Hi. I'm a Gen X player from Canada in the Eastern time zone (same as NY, NY USA) ...
I've been off and odd with gaming, some personal health and other things...
body and brain is a bit rusty here, trying to get myself into gear to game a little more, maybe more this fall, until the spring, before the weather is really nice here for a few months to be outside, etc...
I'm interested in 5e and 5.5e ...I have some character 'types' I can tweak for games on short notice sometimes... My memory isn't always great for spells, sometimes I forget/ have to check up rules again...
I am interested in playing with new players, especially, for the updated 5.5e / 2024e dnd ... possibly using dndbeyond's tools more , and hopefuly... learning with other new players as they play online as well, with the tools hopefully assisting in checking rules faster, etc... rolls, etc...
I might try to run The Lost Mines of Phandelver (the old starter set, 2014/ 5.0e dnd) I have the physical set, and the digital resource on roll20, the hope being this would be a good module for me to ... learn and practice gm'ing on... I might like to play it, possibly multiple times, if there are people who are running it, to try it out as a player, first... maybe even help a gm who is running it out, get a taste for the software and the logistics of running games.
I am also interested in ... the Curse of Strahd campaign, Ravenloft... but this is one where I will be looking for a good fit for me as a player, with the gamemaster, and other players.
I like one-shots a lot...sometimes...
I've been mostly playing lower level characters... sometimes I just can't even rremember my own characters well enough, to play them... very ... well just slowing games down, forgetting a lot,,, even with character sheets with it all written down...
i hope my brain gets better at this, but either way, I can play simpler characters etc and with a fun group, it's still a good time.
if the link is not ok I can get rid of it, the point of putting ithat way is just to stop... sort of ... visitng ... things that scrape data... from auto-entering it into databases...
for things that don't really care who I am as much as just sort of 'mass harvesting/ selling' etc info... just make that a little less easy for simple systems to do that when I find it makes it hard to sort out some of wehre... messages are coming from sometimes... thank you ☘️

Welcome! You can follow the above links for an introduction to DnD and how to find a group online
I’ve played DnD for a while now and am currently trying to make a dragon ball class and some dragon ball races
The folks over in #homebrew would be the best ones to help you out with that
Ok
No I haven’t yet!
Ahh righty :/ yeah still looking maself
I’m sure we’ll both find something soon!
Aye true 😄 I'm working through the Players handbook in the mean time to kinda prep
Hi guys, I am very new to d&d. Like, I have only heard about it and don't know anything about how to play. I have made a character though, and I hope I did well.
If you’d like character feedback, feel free to post the sheet here or in #character-discussion
I will thank you
hi! i’ve never ever played d&d before, and i have veryyyy little knowledge on how to play or where to even start, ive always been interested in playing but no one that i know irl plays!! all of my knowledge, tho it isnt much, is from watching dimension 20 😭😭
How do I share it?
I am the same
That's how I feel
I'd start with the Players Handbook. That's what I'm starting with.
It breaks down a lot, including how to generate a character using die etc
If you scroll up thought, there's some links posted
Just need to buy it
well there's free pdfs around
which allow you to also CTRL+ F search stuff
Hello
Hello
If you've made it on D&DBeyond you can post the share link on the character sheet, just make sure you've set the character to public
I'm newcomer in DnD
Oh ok, thanks
Same
I've made one couple of minutes ago
Otherwise if you've made it some other way like on PDF you can upload it to a trusted filesharing site like Google Drive and post the share link to that
Oh I'm not Alone at least
Site don't give me the chartacter sheet i made
site gives me Empty pdf
How do I share it. That sounds dumb, but I can't find a button for it
This one seems mostly fine so far. The biggest things to note:
- You haven't set your 2 level 1 Ranger spells yet (Hunter's Mark doesn't count)
- You haven't equipped your equipment yet
Did you make your character on D&DBeyond or via another method like PDF?
How can i
For point 1, in the character creator there will be a spellcasting tab where you can set the spells you have prepared.
For point 2, on the inventory page you can click the black box that appears next to each item's name. Keep in mind it will let you equip as many items as you want (e.g. 2 sets of armor, 3 weapons, etc) so just make sure you're manually checking what you have/can equip
As an exception, I usually recommend players equip all their weapons at once on their digital sheet just so they can see all their attack options, then manually/mentally keep track of which weapon they actually have out at any given moment
Okay ,I selected them I guess
Can you look that again?
Honestly the best way to understand how to play a game is either watch long video of how to do ur sheet, how to perform in battle, how to generally live and not to die or just play baldurs gate 3 :/
I will play it
It's like a visualiser for ur dnd game
Ur the player
U have narrator
D&d beyond
I made a character on dnd beyond, I was wondering how I could join someone's campaign? I played a bit of (40 hours) of Baldur's Gate.
And you using dice to decide ur faith
Hello
Looks fine to me!
Use the #looking-for-dm command
Thank you so much!
I don't really recommend BG3 as a replacement for learning the rules of 5e. While it is 95% similar significant changes were made to adapt the 5e ruleset for video game play
To set the character to public, the privacy settings will be on the first page of the character creator towards the bottom.
On the final character page the share button will be in the upper right near the long/short rest buttons
I just figured it out
Tell me what I did right and wrong
So everything looks fine except for the stats
What method did you use to generate them?
In addition as a Rogue you should have Dexterity as your highest stat, not Int/Wis
seems like dice selected them i think (i don't know it well)
What should i do to command there?
#find-a-game has the instructions & commands to make a post there
Thanks
I'm not a DM i just wanted to find players who already playing but in the post it said i'm dm looking for players what did i do wrong?
You might have made a post for #looking-for-players instead of #looking-for-dm by accident
Yes I guess . How can i correct it?
do i need to delete it and wait for 8 days or there is another method?
I believe the former but I'd ask #moderator-support to make sure.
Swapping weapons cost action?
Could I hit with a warhammer first round. Sheath warhammer
2nd round take out javelin and attack with that
It does cost an action, you'll have to switch weapons unless you have action surge you can't and attack them swap.
Thanks!
That's not true in 2024 rules
You can draw or stow a weapon as part of each attack in the Attack action. You also get 1 time limited object interaction per turn unrelated to attacks
Even 2014 rules gave you 1 free object interaction per turn

I have a question cause I’ve been told multiple things for stats do you
A: roll a d20
B:roll 6 d6 and remove the lowest one
Roll 4d6, drop the lowest roll
Alternatively you can use Standard array, or point but, the latter being the most common one used
Or ask your DM because they may have different ways of doing things.
Yeah that's the #1 thing. Doesn't matter what the nethods are if your DM uses something else, and the DM will ultinately decide from the base rule methods which to use
But to be clear the ones I mentioned are the methods actually in the rules of the game

As somebody who is totally new to DnD i just started my first session. I love roleplaying and I feel like I am more willing to make risks than most new players potentially how does one get into DMing? I think it would be really cool to play that side of the story
Just do it, find a simple one shot and a group and run it

- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.

What is array and how do I access it?
In what context? if I think back the only real time I remember "array" being used is in regards to a "stat array" or "standard array"
I dont know, thats what Im confused about. I see people saying that they use array in their campaign posts, and I was wondering if they mean a stat array, or a bot of some kind.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
They're almost certainly referring to the Standard Array, which is a method of stat placement. You can see above for more info.
How do I sort the score calculations?
How do you mean?
Calculations, including the base scores you set above and any modifiers, are found below. You can also override any automatic calculations or modify them under each ability summary.
I don't really know how to deal with this
That sounds like a specific function of DnD Beyond.
At a basic level, you take the Standard Array of scores (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8) and you put one of each of them into one of your Abilities.
So, for example, if you're a Wizard you really want a high Intelligence. You'd assign the 15 to your Intelligence score. Then, you'll have to decide where to assign the 14 next, and then the 13 after that.
Right I've assigned that but there's 'other modifier' and 'override score' and I'm confused about that
Those are options if you get items or abilities that give you specific bonuses, for example. You don't need to worry about them.
Ahhh okok thanks
I’ve only played DnD once, hardly did any sessions before my group broke apart. So I don’t have much experience

Hello, new to this D&D stuff and was wondering could offspring of a human and a demon count as a tiefling?
Tiefling are literally just that
How do I find a party?
Humans with any varying amount of a demon lineage
I thought they were descendants like a drop of demonic blood? No? Not half just a small part?
Both count as Tiefling.
You can consider your half-demon Tiefling more powerful as flavor, if you want to
But Tiefling is Tiefling

Main question: do you have an imagination?
What is dnd abt?
LITERALLY ANYTHING but mainly about role-playing and fighting monsters
Like, what's ur favorite book
The very first link in that post I referenced explains it pretty well! There's also an online demo of how DnD is usually played linked right afterwards.
Put into the simplest terms, DnD is a collaborative storytelling experience. The Dungeon Master (DM) describes a scene, the players describe what their characters do in that scene, and the DM tells them what happens when they do it. Rinse repeat!
Sometimes, either in combat or doing challenging things, your DM might tell you to roll dice in order to see if your character is successful.
For example, if you want to sneak by the enemy guards, you'll roll a 20-sided die (called a d20) and add some extra numbers based on your character's stats. If the total is high enough, you succeed! In that case, the guard doesn't notice as your character creeps by.
Ok
Hiii, I'm new to DnD and I know what you basically do, but I've never ACTUALLY played before. I've been wanting to for a year but never found a table online or irl. I might need a bit of help.
Ok bro the beginning of your message is almost definitely AI
Welcome! If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here. We are more than ahppy to help
I’ve been interested in D&D and definitely don’t have a pound of dice but I’ve never played
😭 bro I was just trying to be polite
Sorry not you
Wait what are server name requeistments
I meant DOSH BONES
Oh my bad
Np
I was literally editing my message to make it more clear who I was talking about
How do I play D&D?
Hello evrybody
Hello
DOSH is one of the most active and helpful members of this server. I don't know why you felt the need to accuse them of using AI to write their post, but that both quite rude and absolutely false
I am an ally that's why I put this my pg has 2 moms in honor of my lesbian bff

Ok I get it but like I looked up the exact question he was asked and got the same exact answer
@manic burrow is it possible you like Hannibal...? 😼
Who is hannibal?
Darn. Nevermind. It was your username that made me ask
Ok
Yes, because he (like many of the veterans here, including myself) respond to many of the same questions all the time. Its common practice to copy and paste our answers
Ok ok sry
ANYWAYS, welcome to the huge influx of newcomers! There was a lot of questions asked all at once. The bot post above is a great resource for getting started. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them in this chat. We are more than happy to help you all
So mainly dnd is thinking of an action you want to do rolling some dice and depending on the number see if you succeed
That's the simplest explanation I can think of

@civic ledge Look at this stuff if you’re not already.
That's where part of my issue comes in. I'm getting better about it though, escpecially when something comes up and I'm put on the spot
I have friends that play, but they have been doing it so long that one group I feel like I just slow them down with all my questions, and the other group game hops so much, I can't learn one before they are playing something else.
#dnd-newcomers #learn-to-play hi i need help with my dnd character build i know exactly what i want my character to do but i jus need help trying to translate it into dnd character sheet terms so please sos help
dont spam the same message in multiple channels, it floods channels
what you want your pc to do
I don’t know if this has been answered yet or not but it’s been on my mind and idk if I should ask it here, how come there’s no one in dnd who has undead characters like zombies or skeletons or something. Is it because it’s not a thing or just not recommended?
what do you mean?
theres multiple subclasses focussed on undead creatures
Are you talking about summoning/necromancy, or playing as an undead creature?
I mean playing as one
Im sure you could play one as a race like kitty said
the reborn race is an undead person
#learn-to-play #dnd-newcomers can someone dm me so i can get help please😭😭😭😢😢😢
being undead as in the character type is not for pcs as it has many uique interractions
Well, none of the playable species in the rules have the undead creature type, but there is a species called "Reborn" which is meant to be a person that's come back to life from the dead
?
Ohhh ok
is there any groups i can join that are welcoming new players?

well he got me from this one lmao 🤣
Should I tell my players the enemy abilities?
You can tell them when they become relevant, but generally you wouldn't give them at the start of a fight or anything
Though also can depend on the ability / feature
Most DM's won't even give you anything other than that fire doesn't affect or anything similar after using said ability or spell on the enemy.
But if you want to say it that's also fine. Just don't tell the players everything that the enemy has.
After all I am assuming most of the time the players won't be super well-acquainted with the enemy.
I will generally tell people what something does after they have seen it, the spell save DC is 15, because you failed by more than 5, this happens, Rachel because you succeeded it only does half damage and you get no condition.
Or if it's inherently obvious that the fire elemental probably won't take damage from fire bolt, your wizard has 18 intelligence even if you don't.
Maybe hinting at saving throws by specifying an enemy is small and incredibly nimble.
I have given the wizard who likes to know these things the feat that lets them do it as a bonus action and the give out actually useful things. There best saving throw is charisma etc.
Is there a specific website to use to make characters or is there a pamphlet that I have to print??
DnDBeyond has a character builder: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
And you can download a PDF character sheet and manually fill it in: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Ooo ok
Please note that you'll be limited to the free basic D&D materials unless you own D&D books that provide additional character options
That said you can play D&D just fine with the free materials - the books just provide more options.
Ah ok, good to know
And I'd defintely recommend play the game first with the free stuff and then decide if you like it enough to invest in the books.
Well we don't host games on this server but you can look for a game in our Looking For Game channels - see #find-a-game for more info.

kinda stupid question but are there any necromancy spells in dnd? i really wanna make like a wizard character whos really good at necromancy
Yup there are. Wizards also have a Necromancy subclass.
thanks!
hey everyone! Never played a game of D&D but I'm really wanting to start. Ideally I'm looking to play with people in a play by post fashion. I read that these are setup for people who don't have consistent schedules/busy lives. Any idea where I can start looking?

Does the Greataxe Cleave Mastery applay Barbarian Rage Damage ? It only says i dont add my Strength
Cleave allows you to make a second attack, so if that attack is made using Strength and deals damage, you get the usual rage bonus
Hello!! Very new to DnD! Sort of...! I read lore and mechanics for a while now, had friends who also discussed their characters and adventures with me, but otherwise, yeah, first time I decide to try out DnD myself!

Super simple to get started
@errant shadow this post has alot to get you started
The game has a lot of rules for free so u don't need to have the books if you don't want to
Thank you
Hi, im a completely new player and have never touched the game before, but have heard abt it alr and i am very interested to play! Any class recommendations or races?
Whatever you like and fits in your groups' game/world/setting
Spellcasters can be a bit more tricky to learn/handle but honestly, pick what excites you and run with it.
hmm, but i really know almost nothing about the game and the mechanics.
Check out the bot post here: #dnd-newcomers message
Or the pinned messages.
It includes a link to the free basic rules for D&D.
Sure! Dwarf wizard sounds fun!
ty!
Because Dwarves can take a lot of damage and wizard who is out of spell slots won’t be rendered helpless.
That's what i heard
Uh... maybe check the D&D free basic rules
ok
Dwarves don’t have any more health than any other race.
oh
Some Dwarfs do naturally have more health because of their race (1 more per level I think but I can't remember which type gets it) which is useful on wizards which have the least health of any class
Wizards are like the most spell based class though
so what should i do
Dwarf Wizard is a perfectly viable option
To specify what its_fuwy said, the 2024 version of Dwarf (the one included in the Basic Rules) increases their health by 1 per character level.
ooh
skyblade is likely referring to older versions of Dwarf, of which only the Hill subrace had that HP increase
In 5e hill dwarves get an extra 1hp per level, idk about 2024 (haven't played it)
Yeh
Either spend a while trying to work out how spellcasting works in this game, or play a simpler class
Once played in a game where we just did max hp per level, rolled an 18 +2 for 20 con at lvl 1, hill dwarf, barbarian, and took the tough feat at lvl 4, had 100 hp at lvl 5
do any of yall know any spells and what do they do???
Let’s keep things newcomers focussed
Yes there’s a list of spells in the free rules
They do what they say they do
falls in the door with the list
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spell-descriptions
All classes are. It depends on what you want to be good at. Clerics excel at supporting their teammates.
Then what does wizards excel at?
They get a spell book which can hold a large selection of spells for them to choose from after each long rest. They're the quintessential master of spells.
Fireballing the martial players
UndyingNoob asked us to keep things newcomer focused please.
ok
?
I would not recommend PvP nor antiparty behavior like friendly fire
what are martial players?
"Martial" largely refers to characters whose primary method of attack is some form of physical weapon like swords and bows
Wizards have a lot of versatility, where some other spellcasters fall into a niche like support or damage, wizards have so many spells that they can sorta fill the gap
oooh i get it
How do you get spells throughout the game?
Wizards get spells at level ups and can copy spells into their book from scrolls and such
And is there some important spells that i should consider?
So the DM just tells us that we get an spell?
Wizards tend to be a bit squishy and easy to hit, some personal defense spells are reccomended, shield, and mage armor are my go to for all my wizards
btw tysm for all the help!
The free basic rules also list some good starting options:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Level1WizardSpellcasting
oo tyty
such as??
You have to spend gold and time to copy spells from a book or scroll, while the spells you get at lvl up are just there when you level up, I always rp it as things my wizard was working on over time
The shield spell and mage armor spell are great
Yes and no. By default as a level 1 Wizard you get a few cantrips (level 0 spells) and 6 level 1 spells of your choice, as long as they're all on the Wizard spell list.
Every level up you can learn 2 more of your choice following certain restrictions. The first is that they have to be on the Wizard spell list, as before. The second is that they have to be of a level you can cast (e.g. A Wizard cannot learn Fireball until level 5).
Wizards, as punks has said, have the special ability to copy certain spells they find (typically in the form of scrolls) into their spellbook as a way to get extra spells outside of leveling up. What spells become available via this method is up to the DM.
The link Deva provided has more detailed info.
oooh, so the max limit of spells is 6 and i can change 2 on lvl up?
No, you get 2 more for a total of 8 (not counting any spells you may find along your adventure and copy down)
No, you start with 6 in your book, and get 2 more every time you level up
Fireball is an 3rd level spell that has an aeo effect where it lands
They where making a joke about some wizards casting it weather there teammates are there or not
Yes
is there any lvl 1 spells i should definitely use?
ooooh thats good
thanks @wraith sand and @snow apex
ok
Wizard is my fav class, so I know most of everything about it (take this with a grain of salt)
In my opinion the 2-3 staple level 1 spells a Wizard should have at level 1 are:
- Shield
- Absorb Elements
- Mage Armor
The other 3 are up to you. As a general recommendation I say you should have at least 1 offensive and 1 defensive/utility option per spell level you can cast.
is there a cooldown for the spells @wheat crystal ?
Mage armor, and shield are good, find familiar is pretty cool, identify is rlly nice, charm person is situational but can help in tight spots
Sorta but not rlly? You have spell slots that you spend to cast spells, lvl 1 spell slot to cast a lvl 1 spell, you can use a higher level spell slot to cast a lower level spell (a lot of spells get more powerful with higher spell slots) but your spell slots recover after a long rest
Cantrips don't cost a slot and can be cast as many times as you want in a day
Is there any good offense spells????
what are cantrips?
100%, cantrips are pretty good at lower levels, firebal is pretty nice once you can get it
Weaker spells, they are essentially lvl 0 spells, can be cast as much as you want
ooh
Oh their damage scales as you level aswell
I will caveat this beforehand and say that everything after this paragraph doesn't really apply to cantrips, since they work a little differently.
Cooldown is not entirely the correct term. Spellcasting is a little funky compared to say, Mana in video games. A Wizard can have a huge number of spells in their spellbook, but can only prepare so many a day (think of it like selecting your loadout/card hand from an an entire deck).
After that, a Wizard can cast as many spells as they have appropriate spell slots for it. At level 1 you can prepare 4 of your 6 spells, and you have 2 level 1 spell slots for which to cast them. You could cast, say, Shield twice, or Shield and Absorb Elements, etc.
Oh they changed how many spells you can prepare in the 2024 rules? Good to know
The main ones are magic missile for lower levels and fireball for higher levels
Is there any info about the stats and everything like that bcs i have no knowledge of that
tysm @snow apex and @wheat crystal
There are sometimes other limiters on spells that prevent you from spamming them back to back. One of the big ones is consumed material components. Some spells require you to have specific items on hand to cast, and a subset of those consume those items in casting. Obviously, if you have only one or a few of those items on hand you're limited in how many times you can cast the spell until you have to buy/find more of said components.
See here for an example spell, Continual Flame, which consumes ruby dust worth 50+ gp:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spell-descriptions#ContinualFlame
I recommend reading this chapter in its entirety. It explains so much and many things will become clearer.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game
Info about stats can be found a little earlier in the Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#TheSixAbilities
Oh wow, sorry about that misping.
Nw haha
It's just numbers that are the baseline of how good your character is at different things
As a wizard you need intelligents as your highest score
(also dexterity and constitution is useful for how well your can suvive things)
Thank you all

ok thanks for the help
Hey, I have a question. I don't really get how preparing/choosing spells and the whole system works. You choose a set amount from which you can prepare a set amount everyday?
Well, the way that preparing spells work is slightly different for each class. What class are you thinking of playing as?
Cleric!
Ok so, every time you finish a long rest, you can look at the entire list of cleric spells, and pick a certain number of spells from that list to prepare. The spells that you prepare are the ones that you are allowed to cast that day. Your spell slots keep track of how many time you can cast those spells.
I'll just make up some numbers for an example. Lets say there are 15 1st-level cleric spells, and you can prepare 5 of them. You pick the 5 spells you like the best, and those are the ones you can cast that day. Now lets say you have two 1st-level spell slots. That means you can cast 2 spells that day. Each time you cast a spell, you pick one of the 5 that you prepared, then expend a spell slot to cast that spell. You can cast the same spell more than once if you want was well. So long as you have spell slots to spend, you can cast any of the spells that you prepared
I'm trying to make a Half-Drow character and I don't have a subspecies option to choose Half-Drow with the Half-Elf race. How am I suppose to make a Half-Drow?
I see, thank you a lot. I also wanted to ask if on the character sheet you usually write the spells you chose to prepare or if you write the whole spelllist
The Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide sourcebook has an official version of the Drow Half-Elf
Wdym?
That's personal preference. The character sheet is really just your own personal notes to remember the important parts about your character. Writing down a whole spell list would be a lot of work, but if you only write down the spells you prepare then you'd need to erase and rewrite them any time you change your spells
Nvm I found it the guide book
He means that the Drow Half Elf isn't a free species option. You'll need to purchase the book Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide in order to use it.
Alternatively to purchasing the book above, you could also pick the Elf option in the free rules and just say you're a Half-Elf. You can pick Drow as a legacy option under Elf.
There are lots of player options in books other than the Players Handbook. Sometimes you have to buy other books to have access to additional content. The book titled "Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide" is the book that has the official version of the Drow Half-Elf species
Can I get it digitally
Yes, that book is available on various digital platforms, including D&D Beyond
Alright
Can I get a link to that guide book, the one I'm looking at doesn't say it adds the Drow Half-Elf
It mentions feral tiefling which isn't what I'm looking for
I believe this is the one you're looking for:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/scag/races-of-the-realms#halfelves
You're probably looking at the right one. Is this the text you see?
Unlocks 1 species, the feral tiefling, and 11 species customization options to use in creating characters in the guided Character Builder
Drow Half-Elf would be a "species customization option" so its one of those 11. Its not a totally new species like Feral Tiefling is
But how do I but it digitally, I don't see an option for that
Or do I need to add it to cart first?
I don't know for sure what you are looking at, but this is a link to the digital book on D&D Beyond's marketplace
I actually don't think they sell physical versions of this book anymore, because it is quite old and some of the content in it is out of date
I'll buy the book tomorrow which is when I get paid

Damn that's just the basic rules haha
Btw do you guys host online dnd sessions here? Is there something I need to purchase or anything like that?
Saw a campaign in youtube and decided its time i give dnd a try. I wanted to for the longest time now. But only just had the motivation after seing that particular video.
strictly speaking, everything you can buy for dnd is optional to playing the game
dice, rule expansions, campaigns, miniatures etc. are all popular, but you dont really need them
Question, how do you keep track of combat if the game is online?
Usually the group uses some sort of virtual tabletop
Like roll20 or owlbear rodeo. Though it's possible to just do it over Discord
Games aren't played here and it's up to the preference of the DM generally
Are those apps i need to download?
No. They're usually run on your computer browser
Though Discord does work fine as a phone app too
hey , guys new here nice to meet you
This server does not host any games, though we do have LFG channels that can help you find a group to play with. But once you have a group, you'll need to organize when and where you'll play amongst yourselves.
As for whether or not you need to purchase anything, it is definitely possible to play the game for free. The Basic Rules includes everything you need to know to play the game. You'll need dice and a character sheet, but those are both available online for free. The main purchases you may want to do in the future are additional character creation options. The basic rules has 12 of the 13 classes, and only 1 subclass for each. Purchasing other sourcebooks will give you other character options
Great, thanks

Which Barbarian subclass is best for tanking rather than just hitting really hard (not that I mind hitting really hard)?
All Barbarians are great at taking damage, but the Zealot, World Tree, and Ancestral Guardian are particularly hard to take down
Thank you 🙂
If it's my first time playing a tank character, do you recommend Fighter or Barbarian? I like them both.
hi please. what's a multiclass charcter?
A multiclass character is a character with more than one class
If you'd like to get into the specifics of how to make your character, you should discuss that in #character-discussion
i can choose more than one class?
Sort of. This isn't really something you should do as a beginner, since its possible to create a weaker-than-average character if you don't do it correctly. But basically, when you level up, you choose what class to take that level in. If you take another level in the same class you've been playing as, then you level up as normal. If you take a level in a new class, then you multiclass and gain the level 1 features from that class
So for example, lets say you're playing as a cleric. At level 1 you can only have 1 class, because you only have 1 level. But at level 2, you can either be a level 2 cleric, or you can have 1 level in cleric and 1 level in another class
Thank you 🙂
Hi! I’m hoping I’m in the right channel for this. I’m brand new to dnd, but I’ve listened to podcasts of it. I’m hoping to find a campaign to join once I can set up everything I need to play! What should I do first? Thanks!

if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them here. We are more than happy to help
Do you need anything more than a filled out sheet and some dice to play a dnd campaign?
All you need is an understanding of the rules, a way to roll dice, and some friends!
At the bare minimum, at least.
And someone who wants to DM, that's surprisingly rare.
I'd like to DM when I know what the heck I'm doing. And when I feel like I can craft a compelling adventure.
I started DMing six months after I started playing, so I don't think you need a ton (or really any!) experience to begin. And I still haven't made an adventure; I've gotten a ton of mileage out of prewritten adventures.
anybody want to start a campaign im a new player
That's true. Our current DM is using a prewritten adventure and just adding little details here and there as he likes. It's his first time DMing.
You can post in #looking-for-dm by following the instructions in #find-a-game. Organizing games should be restricted to the proper channels.
Also nervous about setting up encounters as a DM because I'm not one of those DMs who's sadistically trying to kill his players. Not even in Ravenloft 😛
Understandable. But encounter design is an art, not a science, so don't worry about not getting it perfect. The folks in #dm-discussion are great at helping, to say nothing of all the resources out there for the practicing DM.
Thank you, didn't even realize there was a DM discussion channel.
If you're using a prewritten adventure, the encounters should be included as well
Which if nothing else is good practice for figuring out the balance

tons of basic info on the game. Once you are ready for a group, hit up and follow the instructions in #find-a-game to look for groups or post what your ideal group looks like
Ok thank you both very much is will read the what you sent me and after I finish I go to the channel you sent to find a group right? I'm just making i get it right
yup and ask questions here if you are confused on anything
Order is basically: Understand core concepts (you do not need to know everything) and then find a group and make a character (either order, but know that if you make a character first it might not be accepted in the group you play)
Ok thank you for the advice
Is anyone doing sessions tonight

We don't play games on this server. But you can check #looking-for-players
Oh ok I never played so im just going in blind
Then I'd recommend checking out the links on the above message first
There is no pressure to rush. Work your way through a part at a time.
Thanks, but the way I usually learn is going headfirst, but…. Idk where to even find a game

Real life places typical include local game stores, libraries or sometimes colleges will have students who host d&d games.
Is there any servers? I don’t really like socializing, so I am working up slowly, sorry if I’m being difficult
Did you happen to check out the post talking about groups? We have channels to connect players to dms or community servers. Its all explained in #find-a-game
Thanks
Hey is this the wrong kinda server to ask to meet people who’d like to call and talk about DnD, Im still learning and do better verbally and just looking to make friends in general
If you want to learn about DnD and how to play it, this is the server. If you just want to chat about it, #dnd-discussion is your place
I'm up to helping out one on one for a bit if you want
Hey what's up guys I'm new to d&d I've been trying to find a way to play a game forever now it feels like. The closest I have come I believe what is just seal player mode with chat GPT as the DM and that's a headache end of itself. I downloaded d&d beyond thinking it was an app to help you find games in app if that makes sense it turns out it's just a glorified character sheet creator. Anyway chat GPT sent me this server link she seems to think you people can help me
P.s I'm also open to being dungeon master if it gets me in a game somehow with other real human people that are willing to be patient with me. I swear to God I'm cool and funny as F and I can be an asset to any table anytime you just have to let me prove myself
First make sure you read our server rules (AI generated work is not permitted here).
Then if you're looking for a game, please use our Looking For Game channels
See #find-a-game for more information
Yeah I saw that, what exactly is AI generated about what I just said lol other than the advice to come here
Okay I apologize I just said you really read where to go I just saw a The new player discussion tab and hopped on thank you for directing me
No worries - and check out id:browse and #channel-guide to see all our many channels.
Thanks brother
Are there stealth attacks that exist outside of combat? Like a backstabbing or arrows firing from a hidden spot or anything like that?
Can darkness be casted on my shoes?
And it the globe of Darkness moves as I move?
Are there stealth attacks that exist outside of combat?
No. When you declare you are making an attack (e.g. firing an arrow while you are hidden) that initiates combat, in which case Initiative is rolled for the attacker and anyone else involved in the encounter. See here.
Like a backstabbing
Mechanics for directional facing doesn't really exist in the game. A "backstab" might be a good way to flavor a Rogue's Sneak Attack feature or the optional Flanking rule.
arrows firing from a hidden spot
Same as the first point, but I will point out that taking the Hide action successfully gives you the Invisible condition. Being Invisible when you take the Attack action does confer certain benefits when Initiate is rolled
No. As per the spell description, Darkness cannot be casted on an object that is being worn or carried.
But with some of these suprise would apply right and that's a stealth check vs thier perception? Stealth is like the only thing that hurts my head idk why
Is there anyway, that the darkness moves with me?
You could take your shoe off, cast darkness on it, wear it, and then it would move with you
You just cant cast it on a worn or carried object, but can carry / wear it afterwards
Ok sure, Ig...
Welcome to rule technicalities haha
So costs an extra turn to take off my shoe and cast one and then wear one?
Pretty much
I saw a video of dnd shorts.
There he said cast it on your shoes.
😅
Generally a creature gets 1 free object interaction per turn, though the exact nature of what counts is somewhat up to DM
We are supposed to get to ambush our enemy in this scenario.
Shorts are kind of notorious for getting specific rules wrong for making entertaining videos about ideas to do in game
A DM may determine that the act of taking off your shoe requires a full Utilize action. See here
The channel name is DnD shorts.
It's actually a long video
A second object interaction on the same turn also requires a Utilize action.
Point still stands. Entertaining video over actual rules
I asked GPT he also said,
I can cast it on my objects and gear.
But not my enemies.
That's why I came here,
Good to know the actual rule.
AI is even more notorious for getting rules wrong
It is a language model, it does not actually know the rules, just predicts what people want
To get this combo off rules as written, assuming your DM allows the act of taking off your shoe to be a free object interaction would be this:
- Turn 1: Take off shoe, cast Darkness
- Turn 2: Put shoe back on, use whatever action you want
Ok
Posting AI generated content is against the server rules, might wanna remove that
Sorry, I removed it.
Stealth is a little finicky in the game with a lot of DM leeway in how exactly it runs. The rules for Hiding are here and here.
In any case yes Surprise may apply if you initiate combat against a creature you are currently hidden from. The Surprised condition gives them disadvantage on their initiative roll.

Dm's choice, a lot if dm's would be 100% cool with it
hmmm alright so lets say i wanna make up a living tiny... thing thats made out of gray bricks and magic, and has spears for legs and gates for a face
and its main way of attacking is to summon traps out of nowhere, is that cool?
Would have to ask your dm on that, but that one is a little out there compared to most dnd races
You could probably find a dm willing to let you play it tho
hmm... well i was thinking of a character that was basically a dungeon in its self
of course not too many crazy traps
When making homebrew for a character it's very important to talk to your dm about
just ''summon a deep hole with fake ground?'' and depending on the number is how deep a foe could fall, but alright, i'll talk with a dm
in case i dont find a dm willing to let me use that character, i suppose i could create a wizard
Man I love wizards
same... maybe i could make the wizard do the whole traps thing as well
i'd imagine making up a class is the same thing, talking with a dm? i c
do i make a character sheet for 2014 or 2024 version?
Depends on the DM.
They’ll state before hand. I’m honestly not sure what the ratio is.
I have 1 group that uses 2024 and 2 that use 2014, lmao.
ah so sorta a gamble?
Well depends what your doing they make be ok with it in one campaign but not in another so it can be situational
Well generally the DM would let you know which edition they're allowing ahead of time
Not necessarily. I’d make it under 2024 rules since that’s what all future content will be made for
so i should go for 2024?
I would check out what the game has by default before going into homebrew. Custom classes are one of the hardest things to design well
well i was thinking of a farmer class or well, for that other one ive mentioned before, a ''trapster'' class
Yeah. Not advised to build a new part for an engine without first learning how the engine works.
Ya just started making homebrew and trying to make something cool and balanced is complicated
To put it simply
Definitely learn first
hmm fair, i'll start things simple and just create a wizard
As a middle ground, try seeing what Wizard spells you could flavor or reflavor with a “Farmer” or “Trapster” aesthetic in mind.
hmmm i'll try
Read spells carefully the wording can allow you to interpret them in an interesting way that can work for what you want to do but always ask the dm if they will allow it most will allow things within reason
could you tell me a example?
A lot if spells specify a point you can see within range, so if you can see under a door or through a keyhole, you don' always need to be in the same room to cast a spell there
I’d check out #learn-to-play and this channel’s pins which have a bunch of newbie resources including to the free Basic Rules. I’d make a practice character while flipping through it at your own pace. Also feel free to ask any questions you have here!
I was thinking like destroy water and well people contain a good deal of water maybe they will let you use it to dehydrate an enemies eyes to blind them maybe some will allow that others not so much
That is an untrue example. Spells only do what they say they do, nothing more and nothing less.
dam
I would say the average DM will look at you, sigh, and say to stop reading D&D suggestions off the internet
Thank you so much sir
The problem with letting people do something creative but powerful with minor spells is that then players usually expect to do it all the time and game balance tends to fly out the window.
Im just saying depends how by strict the dm is you may not agree and you have every right to in your game but outside of your game their dm has a right to allow anything they like
Hence, 'spells do what they say they do and nothing more' being a standard response
I'm not saying the DM can't allow it. I'm saying you shouldn't expect the average DM to allow it
This is the newcomers channel, so a RAW ruling is more informative than "the DM may homebrew the spell to be different"
It was a lousy example ill admit but im exhausted and twins are screaming so sorry
Ill be more mindful that its ment for newcomers
In any case RAW the spell can only destroy water in an open container, of which the fluid inside a being is neither considered water nor in an open container
Like I said lousy example
It's important to keep in mind that the idea of "any point you see within range" isn't always true. Spells still require "a clear path to the target". So for example, you would be unable to cast fireball at a target location if, say, there was a glass window between you and the location
wow this is sure overwhelming XD
It certainly can be! Make sure to take your time. To help speed it up you can skip sections that aren't pertinent to the class(es) you want to play. For example, no need to learn how Fighter or Barbarian works yet since you want to play Wizard
do i need to learn what a wizard can and cant do?
and do i have fill up the whole paper?
You should learn the mechanics of the class you're going to play yeah. I'd go through the first section of the Basic Rules first however which lays the foundation for everything else
The BR will guide you through filling out your sheet, conveniently. You'll likely fill in a substantial amount of your sheet with plenty of room to write in more features as you level up
Also for convenience, D&DBeyond (also the site where the Basic Rules are hosted) has a character creator with the Basic Rules integrated. It can sometimes be overwhelming for newbies so my advice to using DDB’s character creator is:
- Skip the first page. The first page is largely content toggles for purchased content or optional content that your DM will tell you to configure when you join a game. Optionally you may set the Privacy settings on the first page to “Public” if you want to share your sheet character review.
- Use Standard Array or Point Buy when you get to the stats section.
Players can’t make custom spells. The Basic Rules has a plethora of spells already included, some of which are on the Wizard spells list.
As per the Wizard’s class page, at level 1 a Wizard will have:
- 3 cantrips of their choice from the Wizard spells list list
- 6 level 1 spells from the Wizard spell list
There’s some additional rules involving learning extra spells, preparing spells, and how spell slots function but I will encourage you to check out the Wizard page of the BR to learn more
hmm
could i, mayhaps, use just common wizard stats? like nothing crazy or anything, just.. whats the word?
basic?
No tag class found.
lol
aight so standard array?
and afterwards i just make up a name and personality and all that?
Yeah just follow the steps/process listed in teh 2nd chapter of the Basic Rules which goes over how to create a character
?tag new wizard
Wizard
Study arcane magic and master spells for every purpose
Wizards are defined by their exhaustive study of magic’s inner workings. They cast spells of explosive fire, arcing lightning, subtle deception, and spectacular transformations. Their magic conjures monsters from other planes of existence, glimpses the future, or forms protective barriers. Their mightiest spells change one substance into another, call meteors from the sky, or open portals to other worlds.

lol
even the mod liches have trouble remembering everything in their spellbooks
you could say its a spelling mistake
you gain a heroic inspiration from this liche mod for your great line
...yeah hey sorry for asking a lot, but wheres the second chapter of basic rules again?
Basic rules are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
where do i download
Download what?
download a character sheet orrrr
The Basic Rules? I actually don't know if they have that specifically in PDF format.
The SRD (System Reference Document) which is the free stuff can be downloaded as a PDF here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/srd?srsltid=AfmBOorLN5eqHvkEY5vPJ-vdXJmMU2_7SylLBokPMK1AY0bnAX1TPHc-
aight, choose a class (wizard), make up backstory while choosing species (likely human), and then choose alignment (chaotic neutral)
And add stats and equipment and you have a character.
not to bad if using D&D beyond In my opinion for new folks!
Keep backstory pretty simple for now - 3 bullet points:
- Where your character grew up (location in world)
- What your character did before becoming an adventurer (tie to background origin feat)
- Why your character became an adventurer (keep it believable - you're not a level 1 adventurer who's actually a god with this powerful magical artifact sword in disguise)
so when you say equipment, do you mean weaponary or just items in general?
Your background and class provide starting equipment
now what do i look like to ya?
a mary sue?...
...i mean im no mary but i do sue
aight how does a spell book sound?
Your equipment is like your camping gear, books, pens, ink - again your starting background and class provide starting equipment
ahhh general
Pick from the options provided there and add to your inventory
I mean wizards typically aren't great at martial combat but you never know when a dagger comes in handy... to open up that stuck page in your spellbook... 😉
Yep!
Standard array is a great place to start - most groups will accept a character using standard array.
so is that all set and done?
Should be!
Fun! We have a #character-discussion if you want to get feedback on your character (or discuss character builds).
aighty
welp now that ive gotten all of that out of the way, how do i find a party to play with?

Hey, I’m very new to DnD and I’m very confused on understanding the whole character creation part. I would really appreciate if anyone could explain things to me 🙂
Have you looked at the free Basic Rules yet?
Yes
I’m dyslexic so reading kinda goes in one ear and out the other 😭
Which is why I think I’m so confused
That’s fair! It’s probably better to tackle it piece by piece; what’s one thing that’s confusing for you?
The whole number thing when it comes to strength and wisdom ect. How it’s that determined?
Ability score modifiers? The table for that is right here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#TheSixAbilities
As a heuristic, a 10 in any score is “average” which gives a +0 bonus. Every 2 points above 10 adds 1 and every 2 points below 10 subtracts 1 to the bonus
An odd numbered score gives the same bonus as the next lowest number.
So for example, a Strength score of 8 gives a -1 Strength modifier. Likewise, a Strength score of 15 gives a +2 Strength modifier.
Ohhhh ok ok I think i understand thank you
In any case if you forget D&DBeyond or a similar digital platform for character creation should automatically calc the bonus for you
Otherwise it’s perfectly fine to check the table whenever
Oh there stuff like that ?!
Yeah D&DBeyond has an integrated character creator, though you are limited to the Basic Rules content unless you buy the digital version of the books via their marketplace
Heya uh just got into D&D but you two are pretty deep into talking so uh get done with that before answering my pleads ok bye.
Ohh ok ok thank you I’ll check it out, also I have another question when it comes to (I think there called skills??) how are they picked? Do I pick them or are there class specific and picked for me or can I make it up ?
Also sorry if I’m asking silly questions I literally only learned about DnD properly yesterday ahah
Your skill proficiencies will come from your class and your background.
K I think I’m not being interruptive now, I’ve heard of a lot of terms i don’t understand which seem to have a big effect on the type of dnd you’re playing. Greyhawk, pathfinder, I’ve seen things in looking-for-players on the lines of 60/40, or something like that, two numbers, and I’ll leave it at that because I’ve already asked too much at once.
Greyhawk is a setting and Pathfinder is a different game
Oh… thanks!
The ratio is usually combat to roleplay (or vice versa). So combat (or roleplay) 60% of the time, 40% for the other.
Just one more thing what is vtt and then uh I’m good - thanks for the help!
Virtual tabletop. It's a platform to replicate some aspects of the in-person experience: some help manage characters, others display maps and tokens, others do all that and more (like offer the ability to play music, provide animations, etc.).
Thank you!
Is there any tips for what NOT to do while in your first campaign?
Hmm try not to hog the spotlight, don't build an angsty loner who won't cooperate with anyone, don't antagonize the DM for no reason...
DO NOT fight the bbeg first session
Depends on the table, but generally I’d say doing antisocial things in-game, like trying to loot fellow players or being that dark, brooding guy in the corner can make things more…difficult
Do not get close to your druid party member who casted guiding bolt only for it to crit fail and hit you directly (based on a true story)
Well, that one’s more on how your DM rules crit fails
mf dealt 17 dmg on me 😭
ouchie
what class is a generic knight with a sword and shield and whatnot?
Paladin, probably, though you could probably also do it with Fighter, too, if you don’t want the magical aspects
I also love rangers
hiii! i be new here.
Me again, is there a class that has a more necromancer style?
Other than Necromancer wizard? hm... gloom ranger, spores druid, undead and undying warlock, and death and grave cleric
Wizard, maybe Warlock as a close second
Does this fall under a subclass or something then or is it more of a skill ?
There is no dedicated necromancer class, but all the names Enid listed are subclasses
Ooo Ok thank you
I don’t think Rangers get any spells or abilities that raise undead, same with the grave cleric, but the rest of those I think work
Would wizard be my best bet for this then?
Wizard is the only one with an actual necromancer subclass
The rest listed were mostly vibe imo, not mechanics
Ohh ok ok
Yes. All the spells you need for raising a bunch of zombies, skeletons, mummies and ghouls and such
Oo ok sounds like just what I wanted thank you
With subclasses is it something I obtain as I level up or can I pick the necromancy subclass straight of the bat ?
You would pick it when your character reaches the subclass level
Ahh ok
You don't get it at 1 for wizards
Got it thank you
The one slightly odd thing with necromancer is that it's only printed in the 2014 rules. It can work with the 2024 rules as well, but you would want to check with the DM about that
ello..
But what about...a Nachomancer!
Anyone got a one shot i could be a part in?
Heya

Sup
Lots of folks but best to just post your question/topic and folks will respond as they have time and interest and bandwidth
Let's hear it
The 2nd chapter of the basic rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024) covers how to build a character.
But yeah, let us know if you have any specific questions.
Im gonna go read this
Should i use an acolyte background or a sage background for a cleric healer?
I prefer using sage
That's entirely up to you and how you imagine their background to be
Hmmm okay
cause of like religious stuff
but acolyte could be fun in sense of someone who is apart of a major religious group in the world
Not really
Either or any! Your background gives you certain bits of rules, called features. Things like skill proficiencies or bit of spellcasting or an extra feat.
Pick for the ones you want your character to have. The rest is flexible.
Perhaps Mani the gladiator has the acolyte background. He could have learned the ways of his adoptive father's people at the same time as training in the schola. No temples in sight!
Or De Vor, the warlock, who has probably never entered a church that wouldn't try to burn her as a witch. She's got a range of magic to draw on from her own peculiar upbringing, and a dreadful kind of way of knowing what motivates people.
hello
How do i do the hit points constitution multiplier?
I currently have 13 constitution
That's a +1 con mod to hp
Thanks
There should be a chart
I need a reminder, Slots are basically mana for mage users right? Sorry, I'm a barbarian and rogue user so I don't have any experience on Cleric and such, I assume that there are certain spells that requires a Slot, and magic users in level 1 only have 2 Slots, and Cantrips are.. Basically spells you can use without a Slot right??
Close enough to start off.
Your class and background will give you choices for equipment.
Uh
What weapon does cleric sage use
This is my first character btw I literally have 0 dnd experience
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Cleric
Clerics start with proficiency in simple weapons, and would begin with a mace by default.
Spells that don’t use up spell slots. Usually simple stuff.
Ohhh okay
Making a light, basic attacks, small illusions, that sort of thing.
Theres only 3 spell slots right?
For now, yes.
Small spells you can cast as many times as you'd like in a day
Screen didn't scroll... Odd.
How many cantrips can i put in a character
Iirc, Cleric starts with 2?
As many as your class level allows (check your class table as it lists how many cantrips you have as well as spell slots per your level)
If i could send images i wouldve sent my current character sheet
You can use a reputable file/image service like Google Drive, OneDrive, etc. and share a link that way.
How do i uhhh
If you're using DnDBeyond you can share a URL to your character
Determine speed
That's under species. Have you picked one yet?
Half elf
Should be 30.
Movement speed is based on your species and any class features that change your movement
Thanks
Nvm im changing to acolyte
Should i use bless or healing word?
I did a coin flip
They do different things. If you go to https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Cleric the available spells will be listed with links to their descriptions.
A starting cleric gets to prepare four level 1 spells per day.

Welp nobody wants to play with ppl that arent 18
And needs experience
WELP im cooked
Have you tried looking for games in person?
I see you've just finished your character sheet. Just remember that finding a game takes time. From when you start searching, it's fairly common to expect it to take a few days to a few weeks before you find a group and actually sit down to play.
Okay thanks
I saw one of the communities the other day that was for teens exclusively so make sure you look through the listings friend!
yeah, the only reason I don't play with a lot of people underage is because my group tends to be a bit too dark or raunchy for most people. If it's not a 18+ game I usually bring people in but I just don't have free slots rn.
Hello, I am new to DnD
Is there anyways for me to find a group or community to play dnd with?

Welcome new players! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.

Once you've got a good understanding of the basic rules, the next step is to find a game! You can get your search started on this server using our #find-a-game channel.
DnD Beyond is what you'll find is most commonly recommended on this server
Hey guys
Hey guys, just wondering. What is the best combat class out there? my party consists of Wizard, cleric, sorcerer, rogue and 1 paladin.
Best is relative. But to me, that party looks like it could use a warrior. What kind of combat do you want to be best at?
Guys can someone tell me how to make a player sheet
Start off with a class: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes
Add a background and species (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#BackgroundDescriptions and https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#SpeciesDescriptions).
Let us know what you pick.
@wild onyx hey im thinking Fighter class
Two-handed, sword and board, ranged, Dexterity? If you went battlemaster which maneuvers might you pick?
hmm
i dont really know since i havent played the game yet
im about to have my first game with my party soon
so i need some help
and fast
What's your vision for your character? When they do their main thing, what are they doing?
i like a single wield sword with 2 sides cuz its cool.
uuh so my party wants me to play monk
Greatsword, solid pick. Make sure to get your Strength and Constitution high as possible. The fighter can start with a greatsword, flail (for skeletons) and chainmail so Dexterity isn't as important.
ty
and uhh do i focus on dex??
and which subclass is the best?
Do you want to play a monk?
YES PLS HELPME
What lvl are you starting at?
1
and i have never played the game before
so i reallly need help
im abt to play with my part in 1 h
so what can u tell me abt it?
@wild onyx @fresh fable
Monk would use a quarter staff or a short sword
Monks often rely on Dexterity for attacks and have an Unarmoured Defence feature that uses Dex and Wisdom. If you're up close (and you will be for the punching) you'll also want to make sure you have a decent Constitution score.
and what subclass
ooh
Are you playing online or in person?
online
Subclasses don't come in until level 3. Here are the links for the two classes you've mentioned:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Fighter
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Monk
Are you using dndbeyond ?
Usually none until level 4.
You don’t at certain lvls you get an ability score increase normal 4,8,12,16
so @fresh fable @wild onyx how do i play as a monk??? and the tips?
?tag new monk
Monk
Dart in and out of melee while striking fast and hard
Monks use rigorous combat training and mental discipline to align themselves with the multiverse and focus their internal reservoirs of power. Different Monks conceptualize this power in various ways: as breath, energy, life force, essence, or self, for example. Whether channeled as a striking display of martial prowess or as a subtler manifestation of defense and speed, this power infuses all that a Monk does.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 12
Dex. 15
Con. 13
Int. 10
Wis. 14
Cha. 8
Likes: Unarmed combat
Complexity: High
Starting HP: 8 + Con. modifier
Ask your DM what character creator you are using? What stat point generation you are using and is it 2014 or 2024 rules
oooh
Wait, don’t they have a d10 hitdice?
Get in and bash the Opposition. Use your bonus action for a cheeky backhand, or to knock enemies down or away. Try not to get swarmed by enemies.
My DM says its not the serious type of D&D
They do not.
Wild.
That doesn’t really answer any of the questions Enoki asked
So @fresh fable isn't the monk an unarmed fighter?
Yes and no, there is a subclass that focuses on unarmed but they can use simple weapons like in the bot post above
hmmm
btw my DM is making my stat sheet
so i dont really know whats going on
?
Well, if you're DM is making your character sheet for you then we can't really help you make your character sheet. But if you have any other questions, feel free to ask them
All you need to know for combat is
main action roll d20 add dex and hit with a quarter staff 1d8 damage
Bonus action roll d20 add dex and punch 1d6
I'm new to this like just hatched out of the egg type new ,can any1 help?
