For example. Wizards have a d6 (six sided) die.
When you make your character you use the highest value of the hit die. In the example it would be 6. Then add your constitution modifier to that number
So lets say you're a wizard with a con stat of 14. You would have 6+2 starting max hp
Hit Points (HP)
Hit Points are a measure of how difficult it is to kill or destroy a creature or an object. Damage reduces Hit Points, and healing restores them. You can’t have more Hit Points than your Hit Point maximum, and you can’t have less than 0.
Your class and Constitution modifier determine your Hit Point maximum at level 1. Hit Point Dice, or Hit Dice for short, increase your Hit Point maximum when you gain a level. A creature can also spend Hit Dice during a Short Rest to regain Hit Points.
Some spells and other effects confer Temporary Hit Points, which are a buffer against losing actual Hit Points.
Attacks roll a d20 againt the target's armor class (AC)
Damage rolls the dice Designated on the weapon in the book.
Saves, the target (not the caster) rolls a d20. Trying to beat the casters spell save score
ok gotcha, and so how do we find out the amount of hp and the damage the monsters we face have. Do we make it up ourselves?
There are monster sheets in the book and online
Yeah monster statblocks will straight up tell you
are there any tips on how I can get more creative with my storytelling or do I lowkey just gotta get really into it and spend a lot of time in it
Improv is a big part of it.
Also, steal things from stories or media you like.
Find unique ways to explain mundane things
ight sweet
Steal stories yea. Run the premade campaigns from the books
@crisp crystal Oh yeah that's a good one.
Don't just mention what the characters see. You can add a lot to a scene by telling the players what they hear, smell, or even taste.
ahhh ok ok ok
Reading lots of fantasy stories and D&D sourcebooks are a great source of inspiration. The Monster Manual is great for ideas
nw, welcome to the server!

Hello!
Hey it's me, Goku!
I heard you are strong
Finally a worthy opponent
I'm not here for no reason, I heard DND had strong opponents so I thought I could hop in, especially since I get to meet you Doom Guy!
Nice to meet you too

Hi everyone, i’m interested in picking up DnD as a newcomer after watching Dungeon Meshi and is hoping to find and oldbie who can guide me through the very basics of the game, starting from the very first thing is how to calculate point to make it make sense for the character class/race and so on. All the help would be deeply appreciated 💪

Welcome! Above there are some introductory links, including the link to the free rules that explain most of how the game works.
If you have particular questions though, this channel is usually happy and quick to answer.
Yes, so I’m creating a character who is a human sorcerer, and has been wondering if their stats make sense and what can I add to make her more flesh out
As a sorcerer, charisma will be your main stat, as your spells almost all benefit from it.
Here you can see an overview over what stats are recommended, using the standard stat array:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#StandardArraybyClass
Thank you so much for your suggestion, I'm going to look through it
hellooo, i would like to ask which time zone do most people play in? i fear that the time i choose may be too late or early for some people
Hm what if I wanna make a glass canon build..? Like does 20 charisma and reduce on Strength make sense?
Has anyone ever played with a thing called “The Deck of Many Things”
This depends on the game that is being offered. Check the channels listed in #find-a-game
Yes. It's very chaotic and may implode a campaign if introduced in early levels.
This isn't possible with the default character building rules. Point buy has a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 15 in a stat.
alright, thanks!^^
Im having a problem with making my own campaign because most of the time its just "Go here, talk to him, go there, get that, go do this" and it gets boring quickly. I host usually and idk how other dms do it so well.
It's mostly a matter of practice and increasing your 'vocabulary' of ways to run a game.
It may also be worth noting that you don't need to make your own campaign. There are many prewritten campaigns that do the heavy lifting for you.
I think it would be a good idea to start with a premade one but i dont have any of the maps
i have some campaign books and stuff on my pc but nothing physical except dice
Well, you could print them out or use a flipchart paper to draw simplified versions of the maps inside.
There are also affortable dry-wipeable flip mats just for that purpose, such as these:
https://www.amazon.com/Paizo-Inc-PZO30024-Pathfinder-Flip-Mat/dp/1601255381
If I want a character which only have a set amount of spells, loves blasting, high risk, high reward, but is still heavily reliant on magic, which class would be better - a warlock, wizard, or sorcerer?
All three can work in that respect. Warlocks have the least amount of spell slots, but all their spells are always at the maximum power they can be.
Sorcerers can twist and adjust the spells they have.
Wizards can learn more spells to add to their spell book, thereby increasing their flexibility.
I've heard alot on curse of strahd and i think i might start fresh with that but i also have monsters of the multiverse and army of the damned. what would u recommend
When it comes to new books? I think Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk is quite a good adventure for a newer DM.
It's more linear than Curse of Strahd, so it doesn't require as much improv.
When it comes to smaller, more digestible material, I'd give the free adventures here a look:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1827-adventuring-on-a-budget-the-free-d-d-resources-on
Thanks
How powerful really is it? I mean it can’t be that bad, right??
Well, you draw the wrong card and you can now make a new character, as the old one is now trapped in some place unreachable for lower level adventurers.
Another one is you now lose all your gear, including magic items.
Another one is you now have a -2 on everything that only a god can undo.
And that's the new, more 'benevolent' version of the deck.
Yeesh, it really is bad
The item has a legendary rating for a reason.
What’s a legendary rating?
All magic items have a rarity grade
Common
Uncommon
Rare
Very Rare
Legendary
Artifact
this roughly suggests at what character level it is appropriate to find such an item
Could I show the item I have with a pic, to see if it’s an older or newer model?
I don't think that's really appropriate. You can ask your DM directly.
Thing is, I own one 😅
Oh. Then it's definitely the old one, as the new one doesn't have a physical version yet.
It either will or won't have the legacy tag, based on whether it's the old or new one
Where do you find the tag
The cards themselves don't have the rules anyway.
Is it a physical copy?
Yes, it’s physical
I think the use the same art in 2024 as well as of the printing of the deck (Book of Many Things).
It came with the box
The Book of Many Things box?
Mhm
Right. So, the Book of Many Things expanded the 2014 Dungeon Master's Guide version of the Deck of Many Things.
If it has a dark purple & gold like yellow color scheme, is that the new version
The newest actually printed deck we have, yes.
So I have the newer versions
It keeps saying "There was a problem joining the campaign with that character"
The card art is the same in Book of Many Things (2014) and 2024.
The rules with which you interpret what each card does are slightly different.
and ive tried every character i have
Lemme ask 3 things of what these cards are
- The first card i see is called “Balance” 2. The second card says “Mine” 3. The third card says “Abberation”
Okay. Only the first one exists in both 2014 and 2024. The second two only mean something with the Deck of Many More Things that was introduced in the box that you got (Book of Many Things).
Balance says this in 2024;
You can increase one of your ability scores by 2, to a maximum of 22, provided you also decrease another one of your ability scores by 2. You can’t decrease an ability that has a score of 5 or lower. Alternatively, you can choose not to adjust your ability scores, in which case this card has no effect.
What about the Mine card?
I don't see the reason for the question. And the rules of the discord server state that we should quote non-free rules beyond what is strictly necessary for the topic at hand.
Oh ok
We're hogging the newcomers channel as well. If you have further questions about the deck in general, #dm-discussion is probably best.
Thanks for telling me, sir Deva
Cheers Virede, me too

Hey Deva, do I need a book first before playing Dnd?
No. Only the basic rules are required, and those are free:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
For purchase, there are many books that add more options to character creation, or provide adventures and setting information for the DM.
Even beyond the basic rules, is other free material, which you can see here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1827-adventuring-on-a-budget-the-free-d-d-resources-on
Thanks Deva!
Try again now, I believe theres a player limit
If ur wondering what books to buy there are a few main ones
The player hand book is the main one and there are 2 different versions of it, 2014 and 2024. The version u buy depends on what the table ur on is playing
There are also different extension books like tashas cauldron of everything (that has some fun subclasses and spells in it, it mostly maid for 2014 but can also work in 2024),
xandifers gide to everything (that's similar to tashas),
and mortimers monsters of the multiverse (which is good for character species, it's made for 2014 but can be made to work with 2024 if u ignore the ability scores tied to the race)
now it works thanks alot
Can I listen to dnd sessions and not join?
There are groups out there that do that yes.
You could also watch games played on youtube for that. Honestly the same difference!
Any fun beginner friendly sessions you could recommend watching on yt ?
Is creating your character the first thing to do when you join D&D?
Indeed, as the character is what you use to play the game. Many find it sooo much fun to do lol
It's good to go through the process as practice. Look at what the different classes can offer, and how to put a character together that'll be effective in their role.
It's best to make the character you'll actually play after a discussion with the other players and DM for that particular game. That way you you're more likely to have characters that work well together and suit the setting.
go through the process of building a character a few times just to understand what everything means
hellooo, when making a character in dnd beyond, is it normal for the hp to be low? a level 5 character has 12 hp, wont my players die easily?
Did you uhhh, set hit points to manual?
If you swap em off fixed iirc you have to actually go change them and update them manually
ohhh i see, thanks

Arcane arcade have a few uncut dnd sessions
Just remember that most ppl on YouTube do dnd as a job so any table u find might put alot less effort into making it bc they don't get paid for it

Greetings all!
Im new to dnd, I was in one campaign and the dm had all decisions set out for us, so it felt like more of a movie then a game, and certain people were favored not even just cause of class, so I'd like to find a group I can play with that is nice and able to help me learn.
Im probably gonna start with a charater sheet tbh 😭
Try the Three Sentence Method: a bit about their origins and upbringing, how they got their class, and why they're out to adventure.
Wheres best to post some images of my characters? I want to get peoples feedback on their designs ^^
Perfect. Thanks!
What's a good build of a necromancer
What version?
You mean for dnd?
I just started today so I don't know what version is better?
Dumb question, but some use the Tabletop sim for DnD or is just worse?
Always use 5.5 coz it's the modern version unless your dm is using 5.0
I dont know anything about anything 😄
Tabletop simulator can work

hey could someone help me get into dnd and also if someone is down to play dm me pleaseee
Anyone looking for a game?
i mean i would play i just dont rly know how, could you maybe give me a hand?
We have a session rn we dont have everyone but we have enough for a session tn you can listen in if you want but yes i can!
yea i would love to, if you are free tomorow maybe to give me a run trough and i can maybe just hop in a game tommorow?
can i dm you?
i am 1 step ahead friend
You can only build a Necromancer under the rules set being used at your table. Which one is better becomes largely irrelevant.
But as Necromancer was not reprinted, the one that is better would be the one where the base Wizard class is better or where Animate Dead itself is better.
Something went wrong.
?tag new pbp
See Dyno above to help starting with that.
is 5.5 the same as when ppl say 2024 or is it something else?
Yes.
thx
However, noone official uses 5.5. It is called 2024 or 5E 2024.
Ty
5.5 is a reference to another D&D edition, v3, which had a 3.5E come out. So, some people just started calling it that.
Hi
Hello there
Ello
Uh oh, now we're in danger of going in circles.
Right! A bit nervous since I never been an extremely big server like this.
I'm not sure I have either. But I don't see anything to be nervous about. Just a big stadium where you have conversations with the people seated near you.
Me too @elder pollen
I doubt most of the 55,276 people online here now will ever read this discussion 🙂
True. I’ve finally got the courage to start looking for groups to play since I haven’t played before but have some character ideas.
I've only played less than a hand full of times. I really enjoyed it and I'm here hopeful to find something which sticks.
Ahh same I’m trying to find some groups in my area or somewhere I cause I got ideas
I honestly want to do virtual because I don’t think I will do well in person
I feel the same @zenith panther. I think it'd be much more convenient to do something virtual. From what I understand from the few times I did play it's mostly in the imagination anyway.
Yeah
in person can be a lot of fun.
but I do like virtual. it takes out travel time which means more time to play
I’m spilt with virtual vs live cause I think I would enjoy it more with actual people but virtual seems for convenient
True to all. I want to figure out what play style I will play. I think it will be leaning toward roleplay/story style since I enjoy writing and coming up with stories
Samme
If I am to pay for live games I probably need to find some games in my area happening lol
As a new DM starting a campaign with my friend I am having trouble. I've watched all the youtube videos and I think I kind of understand (will be trial and error) but how do I "prep"
I dont even know where to begin
It's not really something you learn
Hello
You can base your campaign off of others but there isn't a way to DM just like there isn't one way to paint
Hello there.
Ahh I see
I'm watching critical role and it seems so seamless to him
like he knows everything
If you are a beginner DM, I recommend running an official campaign first.
Locations, motivations, complications.
Where are they? What's it like, what's in it that's important?
Who's in this location or carrying out actions that affect it? What do they want?
Complications - what's going on that will involve the players, be important to them, what unexpected things might occur?
@gloomy cloud it's just like everything else: the more you do it, the more adept you become

I picked up Tyranny of Dragons from my local
Do keep in mind Critical Roll is a group of longtime professional players, don't expect for your own experience to be as seamless as theirs.
For prepping sessions, you should read ahead for which sections you will cover that day, and take into account what possible scenarios your players will find themselves in and what solutions they might attempt.
I have a D&D worldbuilding/campaign idea, that started because I made a cool concept character, but no idea how to translate it into a actual campaign and I rather be a player instead of the DM for it. I also never DMed before.
One day I’ll learn to dm I’ve only played dnd twice once with my own character and once with a premade character which was someone else’s character I was playing, the guy’s character I was playing was Keanu reeves
I want to learn eventually but I do want to play to figure out what style works for me.
Realll
I’m really just trying to understand the game and everything cause it’s so much
Hello
I would definitely check out the Basic Rules linked in this channel’s pins as well as #learn-to-play , since that covers the basics on how to play the game. Don’t feel pressured to memorize everything quickly; getting familiar at your own pace will more than suffice. Of course we’re always happy to help with any specific questions you might have!
Amazing thank you I’ll definitely check it out
I finally got looped into trying DND by my friends two days ago and now I'm slowly getting invested.
Woooo
Conveniently, it also goes over how to make a character; it is a fairly big ruleset, so my biggest advice is to only read through what’s important to you and the character/role you want to play for now. No need to read up on how all 20 levels of Druid work if you want to play a Wizard, for example.
Amazing I’m currently making one for myself so I’ll check it out, (I’m making a warlock character) and I’ll read up on that since eventually when I play I’ll most likely try warlock
It seems most interesting to me
I have yet to try making my first character. Creatures on the other hand.... 😅
I’m playing around with dnd beyond (cause it does the math stuff for me) to make them
Fair enough
I stand by the opinion that ranger is the best class for your first character. It has a little but if everything in it from the start
Oo yes my first game I played a
Paladin! It was fun
Though I didn’t understand how DnD beyond works and my dm had to stop the game cause i forgot to equip some weapons to me lmao
All I had was one dagger and punching
Hello
Honestly forgetting to equip equipment is probably one of the most common things I remind people about when they ask for a sheet review 😅
I just start at session 0 telling them to do it lol
then if they get new stuff, tell them to do it
hi Theye
so what exactly do i have to do on D&D? i dont know much about it except the dice stuff and a lil bit of this and that
the most i ever interacted was some people on a random programming course when i was a teenager a year or two ago

Read the basic rules. Ask questions here when you get lost
didnt last anything and probably was not a very good introduction since it was just some people trying to have fun
Link after link after link 😵💫
same! my paladin sat at the back of the first several encounters doing nothing at all bc my friends all had ranged weapons when i forgot that was an option lol
also hi i just joined lawl x
Eventually I got like 5 javelins so I could help with ranged attacks
Just start with the Basic Rules for now, they’ll take you through the rules step by step
like what stuff means like EXP and Levels? those i already know
so far im reading some pdf titled "DND quick reference"
It does contain game-important definitions like that, the majority of the rules are about the applications. For example, “what is a d20 test and when is it used?”
idk where are those oof, so many links
The document you’re referencing is mainly for in-game use as a quick reference for players so they don’t have to flip through the rule book
In this channel’s pins and well as in #learn-to-play both will have explicit links to the free Basic Rules
(what helped me understand dnd on a practical level was watching streamed campaigns on twitch like critical role if you're into that :))
If you still can’t find it, they’re linked here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024?srsltid=AfmBOoqDLtV2UZcSz0UK3cmR8QFcEDW2NV-d05sc49dbR97_dyOcjZOf
the links in #learn-to-play can help you but if you'd like (and this is linked in that section as well) there are videos to show you some things https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfS8QgUdeGYr-v1QfBH4x_diAZ7SGNFj4
i just searched him on twitch and i cant identify with ones are from dungeons and dragons oof
i guess its the ones with a lot of people
so many links 🥴 but ty
Just start at the beginning of the document and go from there
if you looks up the very early "vox machina" videos they're a good intro imo! you get a taste of what the point of dnd is and how it should look when it's for fun! they are very long videos though lol
You shouldn’t need to hop around the document unless you want to skip sections. If you’re on PC if you hover over any highlighted terms it should pull up its definition/any small relevant info
i dont even speak english that well, trying to learn from all those things is hell 😭
i feel like trying to play it will make me understand more than all those different links
the "very basic" stuff i understand, like what rolls are and stuff
ik that i have to create a character sheet with a background, understand the story and the "tone" of the game, play accordingly , combat have turns and some abreviations
the more "technical" stuff like what each thing individually do i definitely cant learn by memorizing
i opened the same page 3 times already trying to understand by reading 😭 😭 😭
You don’t need to memorize the rules before playing certainly; it’s best to just be familiar with them and be able to reference when necessary. Playing certainly reinforces learning though.
I’m not sure if the Basic Rules has any translations into other languages, though I do know the Player’s Handbook does (which is essentially the Basic Rules + more character options + some other useful tools)
Let’s maybe start here, what part of the text is difficult to understand?
not difficult exatcly, memory is the problem
for example let me read something here
Actions
When you do something other than moving or communicating, you typically take an action. The Action table lists the game’s main actions, which are defined in more detail in the Rules Glossary.
[list of actions]
the very phrase i just copied i cant remember 2 consecutive words from it after i look away
what i remember from it is
"Action : doing stuff"
actions: often needed when doing stuff other than moving or communicating.
what i understand from this:
"Action, talk, move are different"
i make the information "compact" in my head
a melee attack with a weapon is an example of an action. Casting a spell can take an action. Choosing to Dodge can take an action
there are lots of actions.
so what i jsut understood from calamity now iwthout reading any word and just basing of on the compact info
i can do an action as one thing, moving as another and talk on my turn without one being forced to affect the other one
Action. Doing anything other than walking or talking
so in an example i could make in my turn:
move to that place and then make an action on that place on my turn and i can talk whenever i want
my understanding is a single turn has three main parts: your action (main attack, heal, spell, etc), movement, and bonus action (sneak, hide, extra attack), right?
Yes and no
there are limitations on movement and length of speaking when in combat, but outside of combat, you can generally speak uninterrupted and move where you like.
my memory is shit so im forced to just make things simplier and try to understand the simplier things my own way
so i also suck explaining things to other people
To simplify the game down then yes you have movement, action, and bonus action. You can use any of the 3 in any order. However you typically only get 1 action. 1 bonus action. And 30 feet of movement
30 feet is the rule or personal for each game?
Its the standard for most characters
ok
Its based on your race. Some races can move 40 feet or only 25 feet. Others can fly
But generally speaking. 30 feet is normal
if i ever manage to play a game im probably picking a human to understand the game better
i also dont wanna act like certain people that thinks Dnd is just go around and do whatever character and do whatever things in whatever world
idk if there is such a thing as mana in DnD so im not picking some warlock or wizard
ranger and rogues too looks like i need some understanding to really do anything usefull so i think id take a monk or something
how do i find games that accepts newcomers?
many will say if they are open to teaching newcomers.. though I'm sure most games would accept a newer player unless they specifically state otherwise
Every character gets a bonus action each turn, but by default that bonus action cannot be used for anything. Various traits, abilities, and spells can be used with a bonus action (ie. Rogue's Cunning Action trait let's them Hide, Dash, or Disengage as a bonus action and Fighter's Second Wind ability can be used with a bonus action)
ok bonus action is just a second Vip action
I'm new to dnd umm is it possible to make shiva also I don't fully know the rules and stuff if someone can help me 👍
Like as a character? Boss? Wdym
Character
I'm in love with shiva and my friends are trying to get me in to dnd so yeah
Hmmm I’d say yes and no you’d have to be really high level and even at higher levels it would be hard to capture that much power role playing I’d say is even harder with your concept I definitely think it IS possible you’d just have some difficulty’s especially if your trying to be as accurate as possible
No I just wanna look like him and what would be the best class ( it would be so hard getting his power)
Do you mean like in religion or in a video game or show/movie cause that can vary
Ah alright in that case I think the custom lineage race from the book Tasha’s cauldron of everything would be best just cause you can customize your appearance so much with it but others could be thri kreen for the extra arms and there’s many classes that have more colorful skin one that comes to mind is vedalken just because of their blue-purple skin and for class id probably do barbarian monk or fighter paladin could also maybe work
The best I’d say is monk
Monk custom lineage

I roughly know how to play its making characters and stuff
moves? like spells features you from your class? weapons?
wdym by that
Okay….i just recently joined this server. And made a leap into a campaign. Phenomenal.
I’m blessed, lucky, whatever.
Awesome DM, cool crew, and fun story. Only at session 1 but I can’t wait until next week.
Im itching. It’s like when I got my first tattoo. I crave more.
If I can change spells
I have been doing it for 35 years run 6 campaigns and play in 2
Really happy I made the jump into dnd. Honestly can’t wait for all the crazy adventures and stories to come.
Thank you all.
Good group of people. Kind.
Respect! 🫡
If your character has spellcasting abilities, there are a large selection of spells you can choose from
No I ment change there name and how they look
Absolutely. A common saying in RPGs is "flavor is free"
Kk
As long as there are no mechanical changes, it is fine
Fair
Well to clarify flavor is free as long as the DM agrees
True
Hello. Ive made a is character from the grimhollow books and my friend has a big problem with it he claims that my oath of pestilence paladin multi class parasite warlock is a balancing issue.
Can someone help me make a character and IL run run it by my dm ?
Flavor is free all though you probably won’t get much use out of renaming them cause you only really say the spells name name out of character but go crazy with describing how said spell looks
K
Where can I ask for character creation help?
this channel would prolly be the place haha
oh hahha
Are you a beginner? If not I would recommend asking in #dnd-discussion . If you are a beginner I highly recommended against multiclasses
Ohhh yea I forgot about that sorry
It’s cool
Im just new as a player not a Dm
Btw where are u guys getting the class roles?
Channel & Roles
At the bottom.
Oohhh ty
Hello
Howdy
Hey
What’s a d100
A 100 sided dice 🙂
How do I make a character
There are two kinds. One dice with one hundred separate faces or two d10s with one as the tens and the other as the ones
Wdym?
Oh ok
I don’t understand how classes work
How are you making the character? dndbeyond? A physical sheet?
Beyond
So are you trying to figure out what the classes do or which one you want?
What the do like what is the difference between a wizard and a warlock
There should be an option when you create a character to enable beginner help text that explains everything
The main difference is a wizard is a wisdom based class and a warlock is a charisma based class. Wizards learn their magic from books and knowledge while warlocks obtain their magic through a patron
So wizard gets their magic from studying, has more spells and spell slots, and can add more spells from different sources. Warlock gets their magic from a source beyond the veil, has less slots but all are the highest they can cast, and has more breadth through pact boons
@molten osprey ^
What a about a sorcerer
Also charisma obtains magic from a bloodline which offers multiple benefits (only free one for beyond is the draconic ancestry)
Sorcerer is also charisma based, magic comes from inside them, usually based on ancestors or odd occurrences like fey magic explosion or something, they can modify the spells they cast a lot through metamagic
So dose race matter or is it like for aesthetic
Hello I am new
Race adds different little features like higher speed, swim/climb speed, dark vision, natural armor or attacks, spells, proficiencies, damage resistances and such on
The race offers benefits. You should read through them before choosing. Overall the race doesn't affect much for spellcasters
So how do I find a group to play with
Ask around basically
There are looking for players and looking for group channels here
I’m trying to be a DM but I don’t know what to do and how to think of the perfect start
Here I’ll give a very dumbed down version of each class
Artificer: make cool gadgets
Bard: seduce and inspire and sing
Barbarian: hit things while being angry
Cleric: heal
Druid: nature boi turn into animals
Fighter: hit stuff a lot
Paladin: smite your enemy’s with the power of the holy spirt
Monk: king fu panda + hit stiff a lot
rouge: sneak, steal.
Ranger: shoot people with bows and arrows also kinda nature-y
Sorcerer: use magic and upgrade that magic with more magic
Wizard: use magic ALOT
Warlock: use magic but from a sugar daddy
Blood hunter ig. Use ur blood to debuff enemy’s
I’m new to d&d what does all this stuff mean
So, if you're new to D&D, first I would suggest reading the players handbook and then the dungeon masters guide. After that, look through adventure books and find one you like, then read through that and get an idea of how you want the campaign to go, make a post recruiting people for your game within the limits you want to set and have fun
Where can I find Le handbook
You can buy it online or in a store
How do I make my ability score
So, there is standard array, which is a set set of scores, point buy, which lets you customize your scores to a point, or rolling, the standard practice is rolling 6 sets of 4d6 and keeping the highest three
If I play Diablo is that kinda like d&d?
To my knowledge of never playing d&d before but tbh i don’t think so
Intelligence should be your highest and then dexterity and constitution
What about a rouge, Wise one?
What about for a warlock which should be my highest like out of charisma, constitution.. ect or does it depend on the character I’ve made
Dexterity first, then intelligence or charisma, depending on the subclass and constitution
Can you explain that In noobie terms?
Your spellcasting modifier should always come first, then dexterity for armor class and constitution for hit points
Ok cool so I need to adjust that character lmao (i made him way to charismatic)
Also how would I do that on dnd beyond??
Charisma is the warlock's spellcasting modifier
Oh wait SO I DID DO THAT RIGHT
What was your method of stat generation?
If i am understanding what you mean correctly i just used standard array cause that made the most sense to me
Cool, yeah, I would suggest
STR 8 DEX 14 CON 13
INT 10 WIS 12 CHA 15
Dose any one have a group I can join
So, rogues are a dexterity based class with their finesse weapon specific proficiency therefore dexterity should come first for attack and defense. Subclasses like Arcane Trickster or Inquisitive benefit from intelligence being high, while Swashbuckler benefits from charisma being high. Charisma is also beneficial for getting you into and out of situations with persuasion and deception skills.
You'll want to look in the looking for players and looking for group channels as that is where solicitation for groups happen
Even dumber terms please I’m not the smartest tool in the shed
Ok cool I’ll make adjustments the.
You can mix up strength intelligence and wisdom as required or preferred, but that's what I would suggest
I’ll see what I got and I’ll get back to you cause I it’s ok but not like great
So, what are you getting caught up on? The stats in general or their purpose in a rogue build?
Idk what a build is and I am not good at stats (I’m more of a gamer and I just level up stuff without reading)
Hey, new player here.
I was wondering about the Faith or Religion for my character sheet.
Does Dnd have religion?
Yes
DnD has plenty of religions, characters usually worship one god, you can either choose a canon one or just make it up for what you want to worship.
Dnd has a list of canon deity’s if you don’t wanna make your own
I'll search that up.
A lot of people also use real world religions, I’ve seen a lot of peoples characters worship Greek or Norse deity’s
Alright, so the rogue class lends itself to being proficient in multiple skills and tools, and also using dexterity weapons, such as ranged weapons( bows, crossbows, slings) and finesse weapons which are melee weapons that use strength or dexterity instead of only strength(scimitars, shortswords, daggers) , to do large amounts of damage at a time with the sneak attack feature. There are subclasses that utilize intelligence for spellcasting or intelligence based skills and there are subclasses that utilize charisma for class abilities. Charisma is also generally useful as a rogue in order to have good bonuses towards the persuasion, deception, and intimidation skills which are charisma based.
How does one upgrade their skill?
So, you gain proficiency in skills via your class, your background, possibly your race, and there are a few feats that can grant proficiency or even expertise. Expertise adds double your proficiency bonus to that skill check. Rogue and bard class features also grant expertise. You can level up your skill by increasing the stat associated with that skill. Strength for athletics, Dexterity for acrobatics, sleight of hand, and stealth, Constitution does not have any skill proficiencies, Intelligence for arcana, history, investigation, nature, religion, Wisdom for animal handling, insight, medicine, perception, survival, and Charisma for deception, intimidation, performance, and persuasion.
Maybe this will help me understand please put it in military terms
Do you want the skills or the ability scores in military terms?
Both
Okay so, Strength is how much you can lug around, Dexterity is being able to work on fine circuit boards and throw things accurately, Constitution is how long you can run around in the sun, Intelligence is how fast you can pick up and apply your mos training, Wisdom is tracking your different logs and how well you're dealing with all of it, and Charisma is being able to give good reasons for why things don't get done on time
Acrobatics: Moving around a crowded storeroom
Animal Handling: Not letting a wild wolf come on board your ship(actual event)
Arcana: Understanding those wiring diagrams
Athletics: PT
Deception: Getting away with squirrelly shit
History: Advancement exams
Insight: Is chief in the mood for me to ask about this thing
Intimidation: You will perform this task cause I outrank you and I say so
Medicine: Your buddy accidentally stabbed themself in the leg and now you need to patch them up
Nature: Let's not eat these poisonous mushrooms
Perception: We've got a plane flying 12 clicks SW of here
Performance: Nightly game of spades
Persuasion: We should get early liberty because last week was ass
Religion: Understanding the Chaplin
Sleight of Hand: No one will notice this tool missing
Stealth: Liberty for the brave
Survival: I swear we aren't lost
Honestly this helped me fully understand what these mean cause some of them I didn’t
Sweet
Were you a cadet?
I was in the navy
I was a nuke. What did you do?
Right on dude
I’m pretty sure we either have to do 10 or 20 push up and I can barely do 1
Ah, well, you work at it and you'll get there
I hate PT nights
Fair
But I like the attention game and sergeant says
I don't know the attention game, but I can imagine sergeant says
The attention game basically the sergeant (we call them cadet staff) puts the flight at attention and higher ranks march or whatever and after that they try and make you break the rules of attention who ever wins that round gets to join them.
And sergeant says is basically Simon says but military stuff and whom ever wins becomes the sergeant (not literally become sergeant I mean like become Simon for the round)
Right on, right on
Hii!! Does anybody knows what I can do with making a cute character sheet? Other than the character itself which I made already? (also for it to be easy for me because idk what I’m doing)
Also how do those work anyways?
I can help fill out the character sheet, as for cute, I'm sure someone made some edits somewhere you could look up
Oh oki!! So how do I make/fill one out anyways?
Tbh I would just use ChatGPT to create the character
So, you'll choose your class, your race, and a background, then choose stats, I prefer the point buy method
Did you have an idea of what you want to do?
I kinda wanted to make my character a human and an adventurer/fighter is that’s possible?
Yep!
That’s cool!! Idk if she would fit looks wise though
You can go ahead and select fighter for the class and human for the race, whatever you want for background.
Why do you say that?
Can someone train me to be a DM
you can always pick a background that fits your character’s aesthetic more if thats your worry :)
Idk she wears along dress, and dosent have any muscles only chub
YIPPE
I can help, but reading through the rules and the module you want to run helps
Sounds like a professional weightlifter, she'll fit right in
Oh ok good!!
Smitty, will thou be thine mentor
-# alien stage mentioned
KAIDOU MENTIONED?!
YESSSS
Bro kaidou is my favorite character I have serious respect for you
THANKSSS!!
Which of the books are good to start with as a dm? I’m definitely getting the new monster manual, I’ve got the player and dm books (2024 edition). But I’m unsure what other ones to get besides the one book with the artificer class.
Heyyy I was wondering if I might be able to spectate your next running game before I join one? It's been a few years since I last played and I'm a bit nervous!
If u want them to have armour then go fighter
If u don't want to use armor then u should probably go for barbarian (they have a cool unarmoured defence thing and alot of health)
This is, assuming, you run games on this server? I'm new here so haven't figured this out yet fully
?
Which campaign is vox machina and when does it get to the shows beginning
Plenty of games are streamed on YouTube and other services.
That's true I guess. No worry
vox machina is critical role’s 1st campaign^^
i havent watched the show or critical role in a while but iirc, it probably wouldnt start until maybe 30-ish episodes in bc there was another member who was part of the campaign for a bit who ended up leaving
and said member makes that first chunk of episodes kind of a hard watch
better then what my current status is, i've never even played a game 💔

Morning
hihi
Morning
the server is used to find campaigns but the games themselves are held outside the server i believe. you might find what you're looking for on streaming platforms like tiktok, YouTube or twitch! people often livestream their dnd parties :)
Hello! I'm fresh to DnD , and before I get into looking for a group I wanted to study the rules. And wanted to ask if usually the games are run on the 2014 rules. I'm a little confused 🥹

hello
those links are a great place to start (especially basic rules one) and yes many groups still run 2014 rules
Does everyone in my group need a basic understanding of the players handbook?
It makes the lif of the DM WAYYYY easier if they do yes. Is it mandatory, no
oh god
welp I guess I’m making them learn by play
thats totally ok to do
It’s a thick book
And teens don’t like reading that much
That’s the only reason I’m DM
my group don’t wanna read the manuals we need to buy
hello(?)
ello
We got the initiation box
They are premade
We are like NEW new
Got ya! Well I wish ye the best of luck. Just have fun is the most critical thing!!!!
Is there anything I should know to create characters
the basic rules and create a character links in this upcoming bot are super helpful.

So i’m kind of fighting for my life making a character. I know mostly what I’m supposed to be doing but it’s really daunting to fill out a sheet with all the info. I’m wanting to be a druid tiefling urchin who was raised by other runaway druids but idk how to do all the stat stuff and desperately need help lol
Are you doing it on paper or using a sit like D&D Beyond?
Paper
Got ya. It can get tricky. The Basic Rules Link in the bot above seems to kind of go through and have pretty easy to follow charts that may help
If you plan to play online, Build your character on D&D Beyond and it does all the stats stuff for ya!
Thank you!!
Just helping with the things ddb doesn't entirely do for you
On the ability scores page there is a genoration method scroll down
U will probably fill these out when u start a game because there are different ways to generate the numbers for them
Druids need high wis
Con and dex are also very useful
Other than that you can just put them in any order
Also you need to know alot about druid spells and low level beasts to get the most out of your abilitys
Also do u know what rules u are going to be playing with?
I was actually wondering about that last part lol. I was thinking about making a character but should I find a campaign first to get a ruleset?
If you haven’t made a character at all then it’s good practice to do one or two to her the hang of it. Just use 2024 for it. One u get in a game you may have to adjust those characters or mate one from scratch per what the DM may want
Ah hello!
Howdy Fuskendov
Hii!
Uhm new to the whole DnD thingy. I personally do some Roleplaying and character writing on the side but I would like to get into it the aspect of DnD too.
Sweet check the links out in the bot i am about to trigger. great way to get basics

Ah.. Great thanks!
Hello there, how do I play this dnd genre thing? The only thing close to it I’ve done was with a d6 and beer
lol whaffles. D6 and beer!!!! check out the links in the Bot message just above yers. Great way to get some basics
Does the class of Paladin limits me in any specific playstyle? Cleric seems to be very close to what my character does specialising both in martial and magic but I am wondering about the Paladin because it's also a really close call too.
So I am wondering if Paladin has any limits on any training / combat or magic expertise :/
they are very similar. Clerics tend to utilize their magic a bit more as actual spells to help the party where as the Paladins tend to make that magic be part of their raw power in dealing damage as a fighter for a cause
Hmm my character on my mind is cunning and prefers to fight with every advantage , so she uses her sorcery to curse enemies and exhaust them before offering the final strike. Also her presence often boosts morale of her allies so Clerk kinda fits her a lot... She can handle herself in a duel but when she fights against a group of enemies alone she can get overwhelmed. However she is well trained in martial combat but still prefers a safe and unconditional approach when engages herself in conflict despite how others view her.
Does that help to clear the fog on the combat wise scenario? Does in matter what I pick in the interactive adventures from the link?
Either would still work, so It is your call. My honest opinion is cleric has a slight lean towards your goal
Alright! Thank you so much! :)
Hey! I finished the interactive thingy it was fun!
Hello! Brand new! 😄
Hey welcome!
Hello all!!! Absolutely new here, have only played Neverwinter and BG3 but never actually D&D itself in a live group. Have a few "friends" who actively play but have denied me access to their groups for no reason other than "the group isn't really open to letting newcomers join" And would also not me just observe for the sake of learning so here I am
yeesh not nice. check out the links for basic info.

That's what I thought as well but others had told me this could be common amongst d&d groups so I just gave up until now. Thank you for the links
i find it opposite for the most part. if you make it clear you are new but show u have put a lil effort in to learnin
This confirms that my "friends" are just a holes lol
lol
i thought this game was supposed to be fun
It is?
trying to find a group feels like finding a job
constantly filling out forms and sending dms and applications and messages
and theres 50 other people trying to get in
Organizing a game is work and coordinating schedules is hard
And there are way more players than DMs
But the game itself is pretty fun imo
yeah when youre one of the 0.1% that can find a game
and they always have to be 18+ too
like for every one game that allows me 50 others that would have to include that
Try some of the community servers posting in #looking-for-community - some of them may have more casual “drop in” games
i tried and the only one that allowed me required personal info that i wasnt giving
Fair enough. You could also look on other servers, Roll20, Demiplane, online ttrpg forums, etc.
you think i havent lol
i make like 30 applications and messages a day and most of those days its no response and if they give one they ghost me soon after
I don’t know what you have or haven’t done. And yes trying to organize a game with internet strangers can be more challenging than with folks you actually know.
Anyhow I wish you the best and hope you’re able to get into a D&D game soon.

hi. i played baldur's gate 3 before and now i'm interested in playing dnd here. would i feel unfamiliar to dnd rules after bg3 experience, is it enough for having a grasp of basic concepts?
BG3 varies from true dnd on a few key aspects(like jumping and potion use) but I would say you've formed a basis of understanding for the game you wouldn't have if you didn't play BG3.

I need some help with a few mechanics
I play a level 6 wizard and when i level up i want to multiclass into an artificer
I figured out the rules for spells but i dont understand: do i now also get proficiency with constitution saving throws and do i get new skills?
thanks
Um hi?
Hi Exo
Yeah hi man
I came here because I love dnd and always wanted to play with people online
No, your saving throw proficiencies are defined by your starting class.
What about skill proficiencies
Same. Only from starting classes or the level up features.
Thank you
For example, Rogue gives Expertise at first level so one gets that when multiclassing but not the extra proficiencies a starting rogue would have.
Hello what is the best way for me to do a campaign in DND none of my friends play and I want to play in the summer I would prefer a one shot
Ty, it is my first time multiclassing
It is all good. 2024 classes are better written for this as it specifically separates multiclass benefits from starting. But yeah, Artificer being written for 2014 rules still uses some of the older more confusing presentation.
Side note though... once you find everything in the 2014 rules, multiclassing basically works the same.
hi im new here, how did you guys first got into the game?
Hi. Been watching CR for like 2,5 years. Wanted to try. Made a bunch of characters and hoped for the best 😄 I played my first game today and it was awesomely chaotic 😄
Follow the easy steps in #find-a-game to find your future group and u can post yer own looking for so a DM may find u
A friend said lets try it, so we did,
strange to know there is a DandD server
Yet here it is lol
D&D in general or just a specific part?
In general
Have you taken a look at the free Basic Rules yet? That explains how to play and how to make a character, unless you had a more specific/different question about the game
Oh didn’t know there was rules
Yup, they can be found in this channel's pins as well as #learn-to-play . I recommend making a practice character as you read through it to help reinforce information.
It can be overwhelming at first, so my biggest pieces of advice are to:
- read through and learn at your own pace
- past the basics, focus only on the parts that interest you (e.g. no need to learn how Druid works if you want to play a Wizard)
- focus on familiarization instead of memorization
- ask any specific questions you might have along the way here
How would you guys usually prep a session if you were new to DnD? I want to do that online tho and I don't know where to start
Playing or running?
Umm, what's the difference?
A D&D game has players who are controlling their individual characters and then the Dungeon Master, who is the one who runs the world and the overall game
If you're new new, check out the resources in #learn-to-play
Oh thank you, I kinda need both. But probably running first.
I am brand new to dnd should i be looking for a game or make a character first?
It's good to go through the process as practice. Look at what the different classes can offer, and how to put a character together that'll be effective in their role.
It's best to make the character you'll actually play after a discussion with the other players and DM for that particular game. That way you you're more likely to have characters that work well together and suit the setting.
ohh thx for the info
which class would you recommend to choose for your first campaign?
Depends on what you want to do. You may want to a pick and easier class like Fighter but if you want to use magic Warlock could be a good choice too.
Hi I’m not sure where to post this but does anyone have an open spot for a player? I’m free past 5 on weekend nights and most weekends
Did you mean to put weekend and weekend. or was one of those supposed to be Week? 🙂
This channel isn't for organizing games but you can check out #looking-for-players for DMs recruiting. #looking-for-community is also an option.
yo
Hey #looking-for-dm and 3 other #looking-for-players . And I'm kinda new to this but I understand the general idea. I'm looking for a group that is understanding and can go slow and if possible okay with doing sessions through messages. But I can totally do a call or something.
You need to either post in #looking-for-dm (follow #find-a-game's info) or reply to posts in #looking-for-players!

is skilled a good feat? the 2024 edition
That kind of question can be better asked in #optimization
If you are a newcomer, don't worry too hard about making an optimized character
Oh boy, we have to fire up the wayback machine and head to around 1980. My older sisters brought home some guys from high school to play D&D with. Both Dad and I were interested, and dad bought the Blue Box basic set and we checked out the rule books from the city library as often as we could. Managed to convince my sisters to DM for us, and since it was just Dad and I we each ran 4 (!) characters. We didn't know better!
Firbolg or Astral Elf for bonus action disengage, just personal opinion. Because I’m planning on playing a full caster and want to be able to get outta dodge. So essentially, invis or teleportation?
Good topic for #character-discussion
Yoo
Yoooo

Ohhhh ty!
Thank you, I failed to summon the bot, lol.
So iv never played dnd before and my friend dropped his campaign and told me to dm for him and some buddies and I failed all my English classes and can make a interesting story for shit.😅 i need to write it and learn everything in 2 weeks dose anyone have any advice for how to make a story interesting or just advice in general?
Good news, you don't need to do everything yourself; there are prewritten adventures that have much of the information already laid out. Scroll down here to see some free ones:

K thanks👍
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Welcome!
The above Dyno posts should help with being new to DMing.
Hi, I'm a complete beginner to the world of D&D and table top rpgs. So I wanted to know what are some required reading materials for the most popular edition of the game, some recommendations on additional things to learn like maybe background lore or something, and maybe some tips you guys would have. Thanks!

Hello! I'm an extremely new D&D character who's looking to learn from experience, I'd like to play with a group who'd be willing to teach me how to play, I'm very cooperative and willing to learn. I am on the younger side being a young teenager, if you'd be okay with that. (I just realized how professional this sounds lol)
Can anyone help me with a character sheet because I tried making one with a freind but I couldn't get any help in another server and they didn't even say something simple
Are you at least familiar with the basic rules and concepts of DnD?
:] no T-T

I'm not using DND beyond
You don't need to
It just says to use the DND beyond step by step process
Character sheets can also be made on printed paper.
I'm using a digital one that I'm just writing stuff on because my friend helped me with the stuff at the top and then the number stuff
So what exactly do you need help with? If you want you can DM me a picture of it and I can review it.
What have you got so far? Where exactly are you stuck?
Do you want me to DM u because I really don't know how to explain
Proficiency bonus is an easy one. That depends entirely on your level, as shown on the table here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#ProficiencyBonusTable
For a level 1 character, your proficiency bonus should be +2.
Your saving throws are off to a good start, but you'll want to add that proficiency bonus to the ones you're proficient in (the ones where you filled in the circle).
So your +3 strength modifier and your +2 proficiency bonus mean your strength save is +5.
Similarly, your consitution save would go up to +3.
Then your skills you'll fill out the same way as your saves.
I am limited to one of 3 books a month. As a DM which one should I get first? Player’s handbook, dungeon master’s guide or the bestiary?
PHB is the core of the game.
That's where to start, regardless of being a player or DM.
Chapter 2 of the Basic Rules does a good job of walking through each step of filling out the character sheet. I'd recommend going through it.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
That also contains your player options.
Wuh
The species and class info for players to choose.
Oh-
Okay
Would there be anything important for me to know if I’m making a 2-3 session dungeon or I’m fine without the DM’s guide?
You do not need the DM's guide. There's a good chunk of DM advice in the free rules, and there's no shortage of other advice online.
The DM section in the free rules should have you covered there, yeah.
If I’m looking to larger dungeons then should I buy it?
I'm not sure 2024 has good dungeon-making advice?
Okay
I’ll just wing it then
And until I get the beastiary I’ll ask for ChatGPT for monsters in the good situation
Thanks!
The free rules also have monster statblocks. Please don't use ChatGPT if you can avoid it.
Players handbook will give you access to many more subclasses, spells, etc for characters. The bestiary will just give many more obscure monsters, and the DMs guide contains a lot of optional rules/systems or advice for making homebrew
okay
Yeah, the free Basic Rules are built from all three books.
Which to get first depends on what you want more of:
- Player options
- DM tools and advice
- Monsters
I mean
Hear me out here : I want to make a cool dungeon, with multiple ideas and such, but I’m not sure if I could with the basic rules or basic dm knowledge
It should be fully possible. I would advise perhaps watching videos on that matter to help
I'm playing with my friends and we are all new to DND and I'm the end and I don't really get how the story goes like sometimes it's blank and skips to the next part do I as the dungeon master have to fill this parts in?
Are you playing an adventure?
How are you running it, then?
I try to fill in the parts but my players keep kidnapping the npcs
You do. How do you know how the story goes then?
And I try to redirect them into the story
that booklet with the story

I was initially going to direct you to #1029833015423143957 but it sounds like this is actually more #dm-discussion since it's about player mangagement and running an adventure generally.

No I'm like playing a pre set
I know
It's called dragons of stormwreck isle
Random encounters on pages 14-15
Oh ok
Ty but for the parts where it kinda just skips past do I fill those parts in?
You can make like forks
What's forks?
Where each way leads to an encounter
Okie but if my players get caught kidnapping an NPC how do I like redirect them back to the dtoryline
And after that you put in another one that leads to different ways to access dungeons.
Where are they taking them?
Idk they just kidnap them
So they’re taking them with?
Yeah kind of
We are all new so they don't really think about it and I have to say like roll for perception for them if they don't try
Kill the man
?
Ic
Or have him have a heart attack
You mean the person getting kidnapped?
Yes
This is your world. You need to adapt
I mean a quest npc giver
Also in dnd does it have to have a storyline like a demon king situation?
Okie
No
You wanna know the adventure I’m making up?
The mega cheese got stolen by Ryan Gosling
And he’s gonna ruin the world with serious.
Dang
Dang
The world is your playground
In this case, make her have call a bird or something
Or other kobolds
For my first session my party tried to kill her
Dam
So I did the miserable act of saying “ no you can’t do that”
Should’ve knocked them out instead
Yeah my players tried seducing the first 3 zombies
You seem to have a fun party
I said id let them if they hit a nat 20... They hit a nat 20
I'd say this is a better conversation in #dm-discussion or private messages. This is beyond the scope of the channel.
Ik I didn't get what difficult class is

Hello
hru
I am well thanks, and u? Let us know if u have any questions
Hello dnd discord server
Im a super new wannabe dnd player and I have a lot of ideas for some really cool characters I’d like to role play
If you’d be kind enough to walk me through some things I’d love to play in any campaigns
#learn-to-play is a nice place to start, it contains some useful resources
And if you have any specific questions, people here are happy to answer!
Hi all! I was wondering if anyone might have a couple open spots in a campaign they're hosting online? My friend and I are looking for a group to join! Both of us are really new to DND but are really eager to find some folks who'd be willing to show us the ropes! My dms are open for anyone who might want to invite the two of us or if you just want to share some tips. I have some general knowledge from playing years ago, but it's been quite some time, so I'm very rusty.
Please note that we don't allow group formation or solicitation outside our looking-for channels.
#find-a-game gives you direction on how to use our lf channels
Oh! Sorry!
In the handbook, there's a range of heights for different races. Is it possible to have a character who doesn't fit into the height range given or are they locked into them? For example, could I have a 6'4" halfling just to get the halfling bonus or do they need to be around the 3' height?
its up to your dm, if you have any questions about race customizability ask them and see if they allow it!
Gotcha, thanks! :D
Ello, new player here.
I’ve barely played much DnD (only played with friends at school 2 years back, likely gonna start up again this year), and was wondering about the Paladin class (hence the name icon). To me it sounds like just a warrior who can use powers granted from their god(s), is that correct? (Also any advice before I make my character?)
From what I know paladins are more martial/spellcaster hybrid. They do get some fighter bonuses, like extra attacks I think, but they also get spells to support the party and raze whatever monsters happen to be attacking
Ok thanks!
a defining feature of paladins are oaths, which you must swear by.
And they don’t use some stuff like poison attacks, correct?
I don't believe so
Alright
That’d be great
Hello, I'm new here. Nice to meet you all. Not sure what DnD is other than rolling dice for checks and roleplaying but I hope I can learn.
Most experience I've had is watching people play on YT or being in a call as people played. I'm guessing my first steps is that I'd need to find a group?
(Also yes I have the Dungeon Master role too, but that's because I don't want to be locked out of channels, lol)
Im kinda new to the game as a hole, but found an interest in the Artificer, and seen the option of having a bastion, and was curious what u all think would be a good way to go for both, business and/or a home.
Your first steps would be to create a character can’t go looking for games without one of those
Wow, really? I would have figured that when you find a group of people to play with, they'd help you come up with something. Hm, thanks for letting me know.
Your instinct is correct, most modern DMs prefer characters to be made specifically for their campaigns
Or at the very least, expect you to be willing to make significant alterations to an existing character you may have
Yeah, see that was my concern, I didn't want to go and make a hugely intricate guy only for the first DM I play with be like "But this world is actually like, super steam punky so you're silly lil guy doesn't really fit in at all."
Yep, your DM should (some don’t but whatever) go over expectations and vibes for a campaign prior to starting it
If you’re trying to learn D&D, check out #learn-to-play. The Basic Rules you need to play are free
Thank you, by the way, you've been a huge help. 😅

Welcome! You can follow the above instructions for an introduction to DnD.
Awesome. Thank you.
So im completely new to dnd-- ive been reading the player's handbook and dm guide and ive started a script but i stuggle to keep a coherant story-- does anyone hv a templete or tips?
If you want to make your own campaign, I recommend first trying out and playing official ones first. That way you can learn how good DnD campaigns flow .
Granted any long-term campaign book will cost money so if budget is tight it's not necessary
Though you can pick up a few free OneShot on DnD Beyond
I don't even how how to make to make a character, let alone homebrew one
the first step is to get a character sheet
you can print one from the internet for free
then you have to choose a name, race (species), class, background and alignment
lists of the options can be found online
that’s the very basic steps, after that you have to roll your abilities (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA)
for each one you roll a d6 four times and discard the lowest result
that’s your ability score
then you take the score for each ability, subtract 10, and divide by 2 (round down)
that’s your ability modifier
so if you get 16 for charisma, your ability score is 16 and your ability modifier is +3
also some of the classes grant bonuses to your scores so check for that
races may or may not depending if you’re using the 2014 or 2024 rules
lmk when or if you’re ready for the next steps
Okay here's an issue, is pacifism allowed?
I mean I want to play as a Claire wendigo who uses ice so I guess I'm mainly a support
if this is just a personal character I see no reason why not though
I guess I'll start with my stats then
also I forgot to say but you can choose which ability scores go to which abilities
so you can shift them around
for a cleric you should put your highest into wisdom
Question what happens if you get a duplicate low number?
just pick one of them to eliminate and keep the other
Nothing stops you from being a pacifist, though be aware that it might not really work depending on how you wish to do it
If your character completely avoids any and all violenece, or taking part in it, you're faced with two issues: Combat is gonna be very boring for you, and/or you're removing combat from players who like it / want it in the game
If you just prefer to be for example supportive cleric who heals / buffs your allies, that's gonna work a lot better
next you will select your saving throws
for a cleric they are wisdom and charisma
after that, your skills
as a cleric, you can choose 2 from history, insight, medicine, persuasion, or religion (to calculate, 2 + your modifier)
Okay I got my stat rolled out
What's next?
But also I need some explanation on what each stat does
So I can properly put them in the right place
strength is how strong you are
dexterity is how acrobatic or quick-fingered you are
constitution is how resistant you are to disease or illness
intelligence is how logical you are
wisdom is how intuitive you are
charisma is how charming you are
you can assign the 6 scores and modifers you rolled to each of these
as a cleric, you should probably focus on charisma and wisdom but you can do whatever you want
once you have assigned scores to all, calculate the modifers by doing “((score -10)/2) rounded down”
This is not true. Any character's saving throw for a given stat is equal to the relevant ability modifier + their proficiency bonus if they're proficient.
See here for how saving throws are calculated:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#SavingThrows
Here is my stats
Str: 11
Dex: 15
Con: 11
Int: 18
Wis: 15
Cha: 7
isn’t the proficiency bonus always 2 for level 1
You are probably confusing it for a Cleric's save DC which is equal to 8 + Wis mod + PB
probably
Since I'm playing as a wendigo (a custom species I made) I made it so that obviously my charisma would obviously be low since I don't think anybody would want to talk to a beast known for eating and cannibalizing people
ok now calculate the modifiers
That's the thing
Make sure your DM is using rolled stats for character creation, since rolling is normally only done under the supervision of a DM as an anti-cheating measure
I don't know how to make a homebrewed species
Otherwise use Standard Array or Point Buy which are detailed here in the Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Step3DetermineAbilityScores
I'm also Here to look for one and make become friends with one so Me and my friends can play DND
As for homebrew, I would avoid it as a newbie since it can get pretty complex especially if you don't know how the system works first. You'll also need DM approval to use any homebrew, which is unfortunately less likely to be approved since you're new
anyway, these should be your modifiers:
Str: +0
Dex: +2
Con: +0
Int: +4
Wis: +2
Cha: -2
Okay so what would be my final status?
As a middle ground, try reflavoring (changing the narrative description w/o changing mechanics) an existing official option
well you write the bigger number in the main space and the modifier in the smaller space
Also Jacobin and Star wanna be friends?
I have a server with my friends and all of us are pretty much new to D&D
ok
Hi I’m just now getting into dnd my friend suggested I join this server to start learning about it
Sented a friend request
I wish I could send images it would be easier
Assuming your future DM is ok with you rolling w/o supervision and approves that spread, I suggest going with one of the following spreads:
STR 7 (-2) / DEX 15 (+2) / CON 15 (+2) / INT 11 (+0) / WIS 18 (+4) / CHA 11 (+0)
STR 15 (+2) / DEX 11 (+0) / CON 15 (+2) / INT 7 (-2) / WIS 18 (+4) / CHA 11 (+0)
After that you'd apply your background bonuses, ideally one that gives a boost to Wisdom such as:
- Acolyte (less recommended since Int & Cha aren't as useful as Str/Dex or Con for a Cleric)
- Farmer
- Guard (if wanting to use heavy armor)
- Guide
- Hermit
- Sage
- Scribe
- Wayfarer
I'll just talk with you in my friend server
Their HP would be 10 only if they put a 15 into Con and did not boost it via their background ASIs, so I would wait until Charlie makes a decision on what background to give their character
And ditto for AC since that assumes they put an 11 into Dex and did not equip any armor potentially given by their starter equipment
Guys in your stats how do u know how much + you have on a specific stat like strength for example
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Check the last link about Ability Scores and Modifiers table
I am a druid wood fairy born from a flower, what should my character be
It's a good thing both Druids and Fairies exist in D&D!
Directly you'd probably enjoy playing a Fairy (species) Druid (class)
It depends on what class you are playing
Each class usaly has a few stats that need to be high some that the number doesn't really matter and some that they will never need
The ones that need to be high are listed under the class has primary abilitys
And usaly if your strength or dexterity is high on the class u don't need the other one (here are some classes that don't follow this rule like barbarians)
Also constitution determines how much health u have so it can't be low
And spellcasting classes that don't get much armor need dexterity for there ac
In the dnd fifth edition book does it include new stuff or just more detail and new player friendly descriptions ?
Do you mean the 2024 Player's Handbook?
Yea
It does include new stuff. Many rules have been refreshed/updated especially those concerning character creation.
Some of the subclasses included are new as well, such as Path of the World Tree Barbarian
What about like in terms of adding new enemies do they still do that?
They did add some new enemies to the new Monster Manual, yeah. A lot of the old monsters make an appearance too, most of them tweaked to be easier to use.
You can see a lot of these changes in the free basic rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
