Here on this server, you can use the lfg channels (see the link above yours to find out more).
There is also this handy guide by iamrazorwing that goes into more detail:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
People are offering/looking for games all over the place.
As far as the rules go, I can't help you through the entire character sheet, but if you have questions, feel free to post them here. People are usually very helpful in answering anything.
Is there a way I can make a character who useses magic with his magic being limmeted to summoning weapons rather than spells or healing chants
Somewhat. There is a way to build a Warlock so that you can summon any weapon. You'll still have some other spells though.
Look for the Pact of the Blade invocation.
How could I find that
Here's the warlock class:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Warlock
And here you'll find Pact of the Blade:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#PactoftheBlade
But for the entire character creation process, I'd follow this Step by Step Guide:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
I want to play D&D I'm new
Can someone please show me the basics of playing d&d I have never played before but it looks fun
should I wait to find a DM first before creating my character since tehre are a bunch of sources that can be used and cannot be used an ddifferent ways to level up?

I can't personally show you, but here you'll find some introductory links and videos that may help 👆
You're right with what you said, but it can still be good to create a character for yourself as practice. And as long as you use the player's handbook without extra sources, you should be fine at most tables. Maybe expect minor adjustments.
is 2014 or 2024 more popular?
Hard to say. 2014 is what people have played for 10+ years while 2024 is the recent one. Both have their players, some mixing them up
hi
As a beginner player and aspiring DM, is getting all three rulebooks a requirement as a DM? Or is the handbook enough for a beginner session?
do they help? absolutely. do you need them? not necessarily.
a good DM adjusts on the fly, makes things up that dont break the other rules, and allows for their players to bend things without breaking the game.
also, you can find most core rules online anyways
U need to buy the book it's in
If I remember correctly hex blade is in xandifers gide to everything
Ok thank you
I got it slightly mixed up
Hexblade and pact of the blade is different
What rules are u playing (2014 or 2024)
Hexblade is only one option for a melee warlock. As earlier taking Pact of the Blade will likely suffice for your concept under 2024 rules, which is available for free as part of the Basic Rules.
Hi, for my druid i dont know if i should take the wildfire one ( he is a tiefling ), or the shepherd one..
I'd say that the wildfire druid could work with my tiefling
Pick whichever subclass you think has the mechanics that appeal to you more and make sense given your tiefling's narrative thus far
Both are fun subclasses. I wouldn't put too much weight on picking Wildfire just because you picked tiefling; species has little, if any, impact on subclass
Ohh okay !
I thought that the wildfire choice was "logical" because i'm immune to fire and everything..
Only resistant, not immune. And the damage type depends on the type of tiefling you are.
But yeah, I think it would be a cool combination on that basis alone too.
I also liked the fact that you can summon a fire spirit, and how it works
When someone dies, I can either create flames that heal my allies or hurt enemies.
Any long-distance spell can be cast from the spirit’s position instead of mine (I don’t know if that’s clear).
My healing and damage effects are increased at level 6,
When the spirit appears, it also deals damage i think ?
But the shepherd one seems fun
playing 8 wolfs
I’m super new to dnd and the only thing I’m confused about is turns and when I do stuff
i think you're DM will be the one to tell you
Here are the actions you can take during your turn:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Actions
Note:
Player characters and monsters can also do things not covered by these actions. Many class features and other abilities provide additional action options, and you can improvise other actions. When you describe an action not detailed elsewhere in the rules, the Dungeon Master tells you whether that action is possible and what kind of D20 Test you need to make, if any.
And here is how a turn is structured:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#YourTurn
Turns mostly matter during combat, when everything moves quickly.
When combat occurs, the DM will call for an initiative roll. Then everyone takes turns according to the order set by that roll.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#TheOrderofCombat
The spirit has a ability where it can teleport and create an aoe fire effect that can damage enemies and teloport ppl on ur team
They make a similar effect when they appear but it can't teloport
Then there is flame seed which is decent damige with bonus action
But theres also the shepherd one.. It would be nice to talk to animals..
Pretty sure you could just pick Speak With Animals spell then. No need for a whole subclass for one thing 😎
Is anyone looking for players? I've been looking for days. I've never played with other people only video game versions and, with a most recent Ai app, but I have been trying to get an actual game with people. I've always wanted to play dnd, and fantasy, strategic thinking, magic all that good stuff is my wheel house, but I've never known anyone who's enjoyed it too, please someone help me out.
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.

Hello! Before you join a game you should at least get a basic introduction to DnD. You can use the following links above to help. Afterwards follow "Where do I join" for finding a group
Welcome guys! Especially the brand new/newer people. @fast crest @next finch @gilded tree @floral turret
Loads of friendly people in the discord. Ask around if you have any questions at all as they come up!
How's the WestMarches campaign gone so far?
Toxic cesspool with a bunch if people not knowing how to balance level 8 cus they think every quest has to shove swords up your ass like a dark souls game. Never heard of a more chill quest and now only figuring out buut lot of people are burnt out and cynical
Shame too cus it’s one of the only decent european dnd servers where it’s actual tabletop and not Text Rp based or weirdly enough, text driven campaign

If you want to find a game online you can use these instructions
I hate to hear that. 😦
I have noticed there is much more text Rp based than I ever would have expected around the community. Which is good for me, because I already play a lot of actual table top so if I were to join any more games text based makes a lot of sense.
I never thought you could text base it and I’ve tried, all the commands and stuff just eh, isn’t for me. I’ll keep to using above vtt beyond or foundry play
I’m looking for a group to play with, you said there was instructions to use for something?
#find-a-game has the info for this server's Looking for Game/Group channels.
Hi guys how do I join a group i use to play dnd but stopped for a few years now I want to get back into it . How do I find a group to join ?

Looking for something my self, the instruction are a little tricky but if you tap on any of the highlighted commands, you do a quick little questioner
Where would the highlight commands be? When I click on them, it just brings me to a looking forward dm and other options screen
Going into the FAQ itself, there will be a choice of highlights, you click on one of them of your desire, it will then give you a mostly blank screen and a button saying send, it’s after that part where you get to write stuff down for what you want
Alternatively, type /looking and select the channel you want to post in.

Ok thank you
I kinda know but i dont got a character or anything
I have a dice set tho
thats a great start! Having a character is cool to do for learning. 90% of the time, you'll have to build a fresh one with your group once you have a group. But D&D Beyond has the ability to build a basic character for free so you can "practice"
hello
Hello
Ig i have a group
In a discord server
I am having a hard time getting a group even tho i have played gor like a year are their any other servers anybody knows about

You can follow these instructions to find groups online
Ah, it can take a while to find a group. #looking-for-community Communities can be a more reliable way to find groups but are themselves less reliable for playing DnD
Can I make an add to just hire a dm and group? I can’t get anyone and the dms I keep trying to hire cancel because they don’t have any people
@elder shard same issue, hoping I can just throw money at it, it’s frustrating- I have so limited free time
I know at least one person is in here paid to respond lol
Maybe just explain what the community even means- I can’t understand anything in that Tab
Hi everyone,
I’m trying to find the official and legal French PDF of the Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 Player’s Handbook. The versions I have found are visually readable, but whenever I try to copy and paste the text, it becomes unusable because of poor text encoding or OCR issues.
If anyone knows where to get a FRENCH, good-quality, properly formatted PDF with copyable text, I’d really appreciate the help!
Quick question
When choosing a language do I need to pick common or is that a default thing characters have
He is a human dhampir
Default language
Okay cool
Any suggestions on my language?
He is a supernatural hunter
100% matters based On the campaign you’ll be playing in. Unless you have an in depth b backstory where it will make sense
Ah ok thanks
hii me and my 2 friends are total newcomers and we are looking for a dungeon master who's willing to lead us through and teach us about the game!! thank youu <33
Do French versions not exist on DMsguild? That’s where all the old PDFs of previous editions are published.
I haven’t played in a long time and want to pick it up again, help

Ok let me know.
Hey i’m looking to join a campaign, this would be my second campaign ever so im pretty new and im just looking for more people who are into it
I’m new too, I guess we just need a DM
if you guys want to join then that can be 3 people
perfect
ok accept my discord friend request
can you accept
Yep
Is anyone in here ok with someone under 18 or nah cause I’ve DM’d like 3 home brew games but never got to play as a player 💔
I could invite u but everything is in italian :(
Players under 18 are sometimes declined for their younger age, but not always. The only way to find out is to ask the DM directly.
hallo im new here😁

hello!
Good evening chat
Welcome welcome new peeps
thank you! i’m excited to hopefully get some dnd played 🥲
Question, whats the difference between a Wizard and a Sorcerer, couldn't completely decide
doesnt one have a god or deity they get their powers from?
Wizards use Intelligence for spellcasting and get their magic through study; mechanically, they have access to the most magic. Sorcerers use Charisma and are inherently magical. They get fewer spells but can alter them in neat ways.
Awesome thank you, I made the right choice for me
Wizards learn to cast spells through intelligence and reading books and scrolls. Sorcerers just have it innately to cast spells and rely on their charisma
Im just here to cast some cool spells to learn, like Shadow Wizard Money Gang
lmao
We in fact, love casting spells
this would be the warlock class
ohhh! okay
Typically Clerics or Paladins would be gods and deities.
Warlocks are typically other powerful creatures.
Devils
Unicorns
Etc
yeah that too, but “celestial” i think is more what they were going for
which would include fiends or other hellish creatures
Drawing on the ancient knowledge of beings such as angels, archfey, demons, devils, hags, and alien entities of the Far Realm, Warlocks piece together arcane secrets to bolster their own power.
yeah clerics, warlocks, and paladins all get their powers from celestiales of some sort
For celestial warlocks specifically:
Your pact draws on the Upper Planes, the realms of everlasting bliss. You might enter an agreement with an empyrean, a couatl, a sphinx, a unicorn, or another heavenly entity. Or you might call on numerous such beings as you pursue goals aligned with theirs. Your pact allows you to experience a hint of the holy light that illuminates the multiverse.
Anyone know the hardest class to actually play, just for research purposes
Uhmmm probably Druid or warlock
Oh
Wait artificer is pretty hard to
Yea I’d say probably artificer
But base rules warlock or Druid
Hey y'all 👋 just joined, only played one guided training d&d session so far to understand how the game works. After that I got hooked and I'm building my first characters. I'm actually making a cleric and an artificer
Yooo that's hype!!
Many would say wizard
Character creation is always so fun
Because you have access to the most spells.
Welcome welcome
I love clerics. Especially aestheticly
From a noob point of view, artificer has a lot of things going on about it. But once you read all the things they can do, doesn't sound so bad. It's just a lot of mechanics and my character sheet is already like 8 pages just to incorporate all mechanics, spell cards, infusions and whatnot
8 pages? Damn.
Are you writing out every infusion + spell or just the ones you'll have access to?
Well yeah as a beginner I like to have spells descriptions, infusions etc as a cheat sheet . The character itself is the classic two pages
WAIT 8 PAGES IS CRAZY IS THAT A NORMAL AMOUNT?? 😭
Well I'm using the formated character sheet with all the boxes and stuff so graphics take quite a lot of space
The format I'm using fits 9 flashcards per page and so far I have everything my character has on it. So even things like "rope" I made a card with rope description just to remind me what a rope can do. I never played before so I like to access all my tools, spells, equipment things easily
Bro is fully prepared for anything
Well yeah having full description of everything made me realize that I can add my proficiency bonus to thunder gauntlets because it is considered a simple weapon for example
Armorer artificer btw
Also most of the times it is not clear to me what needs an action or bonus action etc.. so I need those written down 🤣
Also a lot of fluff, catchphrases and flavor sentences and action to dive deep into the role play aspect
That is really important. Glad you're thinking about it.
Makes things so much more fun
Well yeah I'm building my characters more on the theme and the character itself. The class and race is more like a bioproduct of the main ideas for the character
Been watching critical role and they inspired me to make characters like that
Oohh I've heard of them!
I haven't gotten into it yet bc there's allat.. ion even know where to start 😭
I tend to go back and forth. Like deciding on class for me is step one. A mix of flavor and mechanics. Because honestly, you can stretch the flavor far as you want, but the mechanics are what they are. With that being said, if I play a fighter with no subclass or feat adding in spells, trying to re-flavor them as a mage is just a silly endeavor.
But after I know the general class mainly based on mechanics with a general flavor concept, ill pick my future subclass also based off of a mix of flavor and mechanics before really hitting the flavor and backstory hard.
But seriously though, you can re-flavor so easily as long as your DM works with you at all. Like my swords bard I played had massive cleric vibes because he was raised in a church. He cared more about the histories of the Faith's and the gods than music or "rolling to seduce", but that didnt stop me from picking bard as his class because mechnically that fit best for him.
Or my wizard that has a pact with a devil. You'd think devil pact? Warlock? Nope. He's definitely a wizard, the pact is purely flavor in his case.
Just saw this, love CR!!!! My world I run all of my games in is a custom Exandria.
Well yes for example I'm repurposing a lot of mechanics. Not homebrewing, but giving it that personal flavor, for example my cleric has an incense burner that can swing into enemies, it's essentially a flail and combat wise acts exactly as a flail. But for my character it's a church incense burner that he's always carrying around.
My artificer has a "zap gun", basically aight crossbow and functions exactly the same but for flavor and aesthetic for me it's like a steampunk Tesla coil pistol but mechanically it's a light crossbow. All legal stuff for the character and level. I just change the name and the cosmetic on it to make it fit the theme better.
Hey… uuuum I’m KINDA new to dnd but what I played was never too official so I was just wondering what class is focused on healing and I imagine barbarian is for heavy weapons right 😞 sorry I’m kind of clueless
Clerics and Paladins have inherent healing, though any class that gets healing spells could do the job about as well, as healing isn't as big in DnD as it would be in many rpg games. Monsters generally outdamage any healing you can do, abd you only need to heal someone 1 hit point to being them back from being knocked down to 0
And Heavy weapons tend to be for classes using Strength, so Paladin, Barbarian or Fighter are likely getting most use out of them
I've been building a cleric with d&d beyond and since I have the free plan I can only chose life domain cleric. I wanted to go for a light domain cleric initially but after reading what a life domain cleric can do I decided to stay with it. Life domain clerics will get massive heals eventually.. it's pretty cool if you want a healer character. Already at level 3 you get +2 on all your healing spells for example. And at higher level you get area healing, self healing and a lot of cool stuff
What are common websites or apps people use for dnd? I have dnd beyond and that’s about it I’m curious so I have things prepared
Preferably nothing I have to pay for
There's a ton of free apps out there, but they'll only have SRD content.
Hey I’m pretty new to dnd can anyone help me learn the basics of how it all works and maybe with like a character sheet?

What’s srd?
I fell like you can google "D&D srd" and get a thorough answer for that.
System Reference Document. It's effectively all of the content that Wizards of the Coast allows to be free (primarily so that creators can make content for it)
True but the guy was here and brought it up so it’s easier asking a person then researching
Thank you very much appreciated
Ye no prob.
Like zal said, the SRD itself is pretty easy to find with a simple search.
Iirc there's like a couple things in it that aren't in the Basic Rules on D&D Beyond, but it's very similar.
Bottom line, if you want something that's not in the SRD, you have to hand someone money
how would I arrange characters and different campaigns?
Like new character each campaign (even one shots?)
Copy of Same character (just restarted at beginning)
or/and have like a specific character for one shots idk
my bad.. shouldn't have said anything...
Whichever option you prefer, really. Each of these would work (unless the setting for a specific advebture doesn't fit, or the DM has rules that don't work with certain characters, such as a certain race not being a thing in their setting / adventure, but other than that it's really up to you!

Welcome! You can check out these links for an introduction to DnD. Feel free to ask questions
I watched a DougDoug video long ago and got hooked
Welcome! I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!
Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)
If you'd like to find a group to DM for, check out #find-a-game to learn how to make a post about organizing games!
Regarding the player hand book do I have to buy it? Or i can watch videos on YT.
I got a basic and general idea of DND.
And I would like to know does it rely heavily on strategy?
If you want the content in the PHB yeah you'd have to buy it, either a digital (e.g. on D&DBeyond) or physical (e.g. at a local game store, online retailers) copy. If you don't want to pay for it your local library may have a copy available for checkout.
Another option I highly recommend is the free Basic Rules (linked in this channel's pins and in #learn-to-play ), which contains everything you strictly need to play D&D except for sheets, dice, and people to play with. The most important difference in my opinion between the Basic Rules and the PHB is that the Basic Rules has less character options, though it also lacks some niche extra rules and some setting examples to run your game in.
As for your strategy question, that's entirely up to the DM how much strategy is required to succeed in D&D. The DM controls how the world and everyone in it behaves, except for the players.
I guess there's some base level of "strategy" in that there are a few heuristics players might like to follow (e.g. don't make your Constitution stat too low) outside of the basic guidelines for each class (e.g. Wizard's primary ability is Intelligence)
Thank you
I am very excited! What got me so interested is the story telling! And how we create a fantasy world and be a part of it! I can't wait to start
Note that on Beyond, while they both are pay, ongoing subscription is different than unlocked content. If you find 30 $US (exchanged to your own currency) + local taxes for a digital copy of the PH, you can use that even without a subscription.
Subscription does give you some stuff but if you only need the book content, access to a specific book can be a 1-time payment you save up for.
Yeah I for me a one time purchase would be best.
To get the hang of things.
Especially with the specs ... i tried to look online and what or how but nothing really clear
Just to emphasise, the free rules (as mentioned by Star before) are there to give you just that without having to spend money.
Try the free rules first. It even has play examples to give you a feel of how the game plays. Focus on Chapter 1 and the Glossary and when you want to make a character, step through Chapter 2.
Not going to lie, I think the PH is the greatest investment any D&D player can make, but find out first if it is a nonstarter before investing good money in it.
Additional side note, while it's still storytelling, not all of D&D is narrative, and not all groups focus on it as heavily. It's wonderful when you find a group that plays how you would want to but sometimes you want to try different groups, because finding that group that plays it the way you enjoy most can be the most awesome D&D there is.
Yes! I keep watching clips of people play it and they mix between battles and narrative , i i always thought it's just battles and strategy .. I am glad that it has more to offer.
Can I, as a reaction, hit the first thing that gets into my melee range? Let's say I am behind cover and I'd rather not give it up and advance
hii me and my 2 friends are total newcomers and we are looking for a dungeon master who's willing to lead us through and teach us about the game!! thank you
You would need to ready an action to do so on your previous turn, to make an attack as a reaction that triggers if a creature gets within your weapon's reach
So I can't do both an action (throw an axe) and a reaction (ready an attack) at the same turn
There is an LFG channel to look for games, good luck
Thanks
Correct. You only have one action per turn by default. There are features that give you an additional (though often more limited) action, like fighter's action surge, but those will generally be the exception
Alright, thank you
Hey nerd. I'd rather not.
Hi 😀
(Correct answer already given)
Just wanted to add, a Reaction is something you get one per round that requires a trigger to use and one does not have a reaction unless a rule allows or creates one, while your Action is a thing you get one of whenever it is your turn.
With those terms defined...
Ready is an Action that allows for a Reaction with the Trigger you set up. If that trigger is when an enemy moves in to your reach, then you can do that readied Action when the trigger occurs.
To the question of doing both, if the trigger occurs on your turn, you can still do it, but the action of readying does require an Action on your turn to set it up. And thus prevents you from doing another action without a rule to give you an extra action.
So it’s kind of a buff that you need to apply and will only go away when used?
If I ready an offensive spell and it doesn't get used, do i lose the spell slot
Welp that doesn't feel good 😂
Yeah, in my experience people usually ready cantrips. 😄
I suppose some DMs homebrew that rule out, because it feels demoralizing to lose a spell slot and not even miss through a roll
sup
Pretty much. But it auto ends at the start of your next turn.
Link to Glossary to read more:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#ReadyAction
Sounds pretty useful tho
I am dming soon, should i allow players to stand on cover? I was thinking if they get shoved they have disadvantage if they're standing on something unstable like a barrel or furniture
It can be. Ready is a fun tool for shenanigans because sometimes things don't happen on your turn that you want to be present when you act.
I mean, if players know that this is what happens, it's their risk to take.
Readying is a rare enough action to take in combat.
Why would they stand on cover? Usually they stand behind it
to apply a flanking bonus
So that they're on opposite sides of a creature
Is there a good place to recruit player on here
LFG channel
I don't quite follow, but I also wouldn't recommend playing with flanking. It's an optional rule in 2014 and not a rule at all in 2024.
I play 2014
I was thinking the DMs who make it add +2 to hit balanced it right
That way advantage still matters
That's how I implemented it when I tried it, yeah.
Flanking just leads to silly positioning shenanigans where people run around a creature while engaged to reposition for it. It is theoretically cool but it doesn't make a lot of sense when paired with other rules. DM intervention is really necessary to balance it out with further house rules.
It also frequently benefits enemies more than pcs.
What house rules do u think go well with it
I, personally, was never a fan of flanking as I saw how it was playing out and found it distasteful, especially when my parties were being TPKed. I experimented with a number of things but as I was never satisfied enough to keep using it, I cannot say which rules go well.
Hi everyone I'm really new to D&D and have played a total of probably 3-4 hours of unserious D&D with my friends. However, I find it really interesting and would like to get into D&D. What would you recommend I do as a beginner to familiarise myself with the game?
Hi! I haven't talked in this server once and just happened to look through haha. I suggest listening to D&D podcasts. There are a lot of interesting ones suited for all ages and it just depends on what you're trying to learn more about. As a new player myself I started listening to Tales from the Stinky Dragon, which is a good podcast on Spotify I've turned on to get to know the game and learn with the players. I usually dislike podcasts because I get distracted easily, but this has helped me a lot and I would like to get into DMing (if anyone has any tips please feel free to share). Another thing is watching other people play, either friends or on YouTube. Reading the guidebooks and rulebooks are also good but may be a bit confusing for a first timer :] hope this helps
TL;DR: Podcasts (e.g. Tales from the Stinky Dragon), YouTube and watching friends, and guidebook :]
thank you very much! My friend has shown me a podcast where a bunch of dads play D&D I don't know if you know that one?

oop that works as well
Yes, I've heard of that! I haven't listened to it though as I'm still listening to this campaign but I was planning on it hahaa
alright thanks!
I definitely still recommend familiarising yourself with podcasts
Also just out of curiosity are there a lot of changes between the 2019 version and the current version (5e i think it's called?) of dnd?
I'm actually unsure about that, I'm about as new as you sorry
oh ok thanks
Some, yeah, but mostly 5E is 5E whether 2014 or 2024. Just some tweaks to gameplay and character options.
thank you!
Not that either version doesn't have good and bad points, but i personally consider 2024 to be a superior rules set overall. YMMV though.
The best rules set is the one the DM is using though. 🙂
Hello everyone, I had built a wizard before, however, Order of Scribes is calling to me. Would it be a DM decision to allow that as a subclass?
Probably! But it's from Tasha's as opposed to Unearthed Arcana, so most will be fine with it.
If you've got your eye on a game that says something like "PHB options only" you're put of luck.
Thank you!
Is it allowed to change "aesthetics" of things quite dramatically but without changing the mechanics at all?
hello
Flavor is usually free, so often it's fine. Definitely something to check with your DM if unsure though!
E g. I have a steampunk pistol gun. It is essentially a light crossbow and functions exactly the same, needs to be reloaded every shot, same damage same everything. It's just that in my imagination and for my character it is a clockwork pistol
Good example of flavor, yeah. At that point it's just a matter if the DM has that level of technology in their setting
Good to know!
Any online groups I can join as a new player with nobody to try it with irl?
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.

If using /looking, check out #find-a-game as well.
Im sad vecause most dnd are vocal based
However i have social anxiety, which leads me to Panic when calling.
Try a text game. Play by post is the term.
Can someone explain how the DnD books work? I know there's the DM one and the players handbook but what about all the others? Is there an order of them?
PHB is the core rules, DMG is for DMs, Monster Manual is full of monster stats, the rest are either additional rules or pre-made adventures.
You only need the first three for the core experience.
Oh so I dont need to read all of them? Im seeing like some other discord servers for DnD advertised as a certain type of server so i am a bit confused
The expanded books all build upon a shared basis, which are the core three books. Most questions are answered by consulting them.
There are also the free basic rules, which contain much of the core rules already:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Certain type of server? such as?
Such as Westmarch style server for example
Game rules are the same, don't worry.
West Marches is a meta concept, outside of the rules. A quick google will tell you about it.
Are there really any rules to what the lore of your character can be? Something like a pirate, samurai or gunslinger, i would assume they work, but i just need to make sure. Sorry if the question is dumb, im really new 😭
As long as it fits into the world of the game you're going to be playing in, the extent of your characters past is up to you. Usually it's a good idea to check with the DM though.
You can also use the Backgrounds in the game for inspiration:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#BackgroundDescriptions
ok, thank you very much!
What are the “non free rules”?
The additional optional rules found in books that you can buy.
You can play D&D with just the free rules and System Reference Document (SRD) materials but buying books provides additional rules, classes, items, etc.
Anything that provides additional options for either players to build their character with or the DM to run the game (such as monsters, magic items, adventures, etc.)
The Player's Handbook, for example, has additional subclass options for each class you get in the free rules. But the basic class is the same in each.
Though some additional options are also provided for free sometimes. Here's a list of some:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1827-adventuring-on-a-budget-the-free-d-d-resources-on
Ok thank you. would like to ask since I am new to DnD. What is considered Canon to 5e? Are critical role campaigns Canon, are they affiliated to wizards of the coast?
That's a harder question to answer than you might think. Critical Role campaigns have their own canon, though they're not official. Official is what we call anything that is being released by WoTC.
There are many worlds and settings in dnd, all potentially having their own canon.
Oh so anyone is free to create their own storylines with the rules provided? That includes other indie podcasts like worlds beyond number?
Yes - D&D is a game that almost encourages it
Every table can make their own cannon using already existing lore or create their own
Oh cool
Hello guys, where are you from?

is bg3 a good introduction to dnd as someone who has never played
BG3 is heavily based on DnD rules, and features many of the same classes etc., but keep in mind one is a single player video game and the other is a collaborative tabletop game.

Thank you,
If I've played games like Pathfinder WOTR and BG3 should I still consider myself a newbie when applying for games if I never played a TTRPG?
Certainly a newbie to DnD! But it sounds like you have a good basis for understanding how rules are set up. Once you've given the DnD rules a look through, I'm sure you'll have a good handle on it on no time.
ok thanks just wasn't sure whether to look for games that accept new players only or how to portray myself in apps.

i'm actually a player asking about something about a ruling of what people would allow. it was relevant for here as a question.
Sure thing, I can try to answer it here
say if i threw a robe over an invisible creature to expose it and see it clearly would the creature now be classed as a visible creature?
By the letter of the rules? No. It's still invisible. Your DM may rule otherwise, but that's up to them.
fair then, what if the player then casts light on said robe to illuminate it?
They'd still be invisible. The invisibility condition can only be removed by specific things in the game.
but would you still give the player a disadvantage since they have now completely gave up the creature?
Me personally as the DM? Yes. The creature still has the invisible condition.
The problem with letting players use mundane things to get around things like Invisible is that they can then expect to do that all the time
And things that are supposed to be challenges or burn resources suddenly become "well, I just use my cloth again"
I'm gonna class it as a weird dnd rule tbh since in balance wise it makes sense. logically it doesn't since that's how media portrays it.
Logic and D&D rules only have a vague relationship to each other
Ironically, the Invisibility spell itself says
Anything the target is wearing or carrying is invisible as long as it is on the target's person.
So there's some precedent for the cloth itself becoming invisible too
I just wouldn't think too hard about it.
True. In this case, the cloth might well just become invisible too
The two classic DnD phrases that I'll fall back on to close out this topic are:
- "Things only do what they say they do." and
- "For everything else, ask your DM."
How’s it going , new to dnd is there an room for new people in any one shots or small groups I always wanted to try 🙂
Hi guys, I'm new in dnd and want to quickly learn few things (most complicated I would say) becouse I plan to play dnd with some peoples I know soon. I need learn about character sheet (like everything, player hp, how get stats, how level up stats, how leveling up works etc.) and combat
Would someone help pls?

Hi I’m new- not to dnd much just to this server- and I have no damn clue what I’m doing- see I’m trying to get a dnd game up and going as a DM, so how in the name of the ever living gods or I guess, the more accurate question is where do I set up an ad or whatever for this campaign I want to do so I can get players. I’ve tried going into looking for players and it won’t let me type anything in it and I’ve been to the guide and something in my brain isn’t working and I just need some help please.
You'll want to type /looking and select the option for players. It'll pop up a form for your advert.
Thank you so much I’ve been loosing it for like 20 mins now.
There's more info and the shortcuts in #find-a-game should you need it. Good luck!
Thank you!
Best infusions for armorer artificer level 3? I can have 4, already have enhanced defense and weapon. Leaning towards a tank build.
the homunculus servant is really handy if you can afford the 100 GP gem, as well as replicate magic item for something like bag of holding. enhanced arcane focus and mind sharpener are also good choices
I was leaning towards replicate magic item. For now as place holders I have that with sending stones. And repeating shot because I have a light crossbow. But I don't know how useful repeating shot can be because I'll be fighting in my armor with my thunder punches anyway. So I can impose disadvantage and if the enemy tries to get away from me I have lightning lure or expeditious retreat
I do cast spells, mostly utility so I guess arcane focus is a better choice than repeating shot. Not sure about the servant. How useful is that on armorer tank?
the servant would greatly help with your utility spells as it can deliver spells with a range of touch as long as it is within 120 feet of you, essentially giving your touch spells a range of 120 feet
as for repeating shot you could take the crossbow expert feat to ignore the loading property on crossbows as well as you get to roll normally if they're in your face which would pair well with repeating shot but this does require the feat investment
Is mending useful on armorer? If not I could replace it with shocking grasp + servant. Is shocking grasp a cantrip?
As a noob dm, even though I shouldn’t have to face leveling for a a while at what point do I decide to level up my party?
shocking grasp is a cantrip but can still be delivered with the servant since it is a spell
is there any items like the belt of hill giant strength for dex instead?
I have 2 cantrips at level 3. Now I chose lightning lure (for peeling my party) and mending. So far I think mending is useless. Can I cast mending on my arcane armor to repair it and essentially heal myself?
mending can repair minor damage but won't be able to do any healing as far as i'm aware
Can heal the servant if I pick that.. but then shocking grasp is probably better so I can punch, bonus action to deliver shocking grasp and essentially attack twice in one turn
Stuff like mending is better for out of combat usage anyway
I guess shocking grasp is better than the regular servant's attack
mending can heal the servant, i just now read that in the servant's stat block
Yes yes it can but I think shocking grasp is more useful than mending right?
I think I can afford to let the servant die.. can rebuild another one anyway
yep i agree with you
In terms of combat utility, yeah.
Also I don't think I'll have the money to buy a 100gp gem yet. And I can only use 2 infusion now.. so the servent will just be there for later probably.
My infusion plan is to buff arcane armor with enhanced defense and the gauntlets with enhanced weapon
I just found out about booming blade. I see a tank potential there. If the enemy moves they're gonna take 1d8 damage. That encourages enemies to stay on me. Also combined with thunder gauntlets if the enemy doesn't attack me they'll have disadvantage. So booming blade + thunder gauntlets can be a good taunt combo
can someone help me build my second character
can someone help me build my first character and help me understand dnd i'm a complete noob

Yall, I need help
Me, my brother and my cousin are trying to learn how to play dnd, we dont know anything about it.
We have a 'dnd player handbook, core rulebook 1' and are still lost and confused on literally everything.
What should we do???
Check out #learn-to-play and the free rules linked to in the pinned messages here.
Start with reading at least the first 2 chapters of the free rules.
You are not expected to memorize it either.
Hello
Short answer is you are confusing invisible with hidden.
Invisible is somewhat still a state of "you can't see me!" Through magical concealment. Hidden is related to not being detected.
Extending this to your example, the invisible creature location is often known not unknown, so throwing a cloth over changes nothing there. On top of this, one still cannot see the creature, only the sheet, so still magically concealed. Nothing different again.
The pace of the game is entirely your decision as DM. However, players don't often like to feel they are not making progress while some other players don't care so you will have to find what works but I like to see PCs leveling at least every 1 to 4 sessions. I have noticed players restless by session 3 or 4. (I run 4h sessions, so that is restless after 12 to 16h of play.)
No official items, no.
I will read these.
Also can we play with just 2 players and a dm? Or do we need more people?
You can even play with one player and a DM.
-# so, yes!
hi guys, i'm new to this game
Is 5e the standard base game/default content of Dnd?
Generally, the DM just needs to balance a little because threats often assume a team with resources from multiple members. Having less people just makes the party a little sensitive to shortages but it also depends on the threats. If it isn't all about bordering on death combat, the party can often survive through most ability shortages.
5E is the current version, yes.
That's a little hard to answer imo. 5th edition 2024 is the most recent version of D&D, so in that sense it's the default content and the assumed norm for this server at least
But that version can still use all the extra content that was released for 5th edition 2014. And some people haven't switched/still play older editions
Bro, I have practically no idea what you just said, mostly bc i am still an absolute beginner.
So, think of it this way. If you were eating, certain foods are best eaten with either a spoon, a fork, a knife or a glass. If you own all 4, you always have a something that makes consumption easier. If you only owned a fork and a spoon, eating steak is not impossible but it is harder and drinking orange juice is harder if you only have a spoon, but not impossible.
Having less players is much the same. You will usually be missing some things and it might make things harder, but it can still be done.
Having three players is considered to be the minimum number for a good time.
You could always just play as a character yourself and "fill the role of third player". The only problem is that it's very easy to mess that up. You need to remind yourself that you're the DM so you can't act like an actual player and you should always avoid stealing the spotlight.
DMPCs (basically DM trying to be a player AND a DM at the same time) is very often frowned on, as it brings various problems with it
ok, so its harder to play, but is it still an ok way to learn the basics?
Better options is using the sidekick rules, or just having an NPC with the party
Absolutely.
Definitely! Rules don't change based on the number of players!
i dont know what version of the rulebook we have, but it says in the back 2000 with the little 'c' inside of the circle , do i need to find a newer version of the rulebook?
That sounds like 3E.
As to whether you need a newer version, depends on what rules are being used. If you join a 3E table, it's perfect. If you join a 5E table, you want a newer rulebook.
One nice thing about 5E is you can learn with the free rules and if (when?!) ready, you can buy a PH for additional rules and character options.
You don't "need" to do anything. Third edition is still very much played. There's just far more people playing 5th edition since it's much more recent.
-# The bot has been ignoring me too 😭
So it is. 🙂

Yeah bot go derp.
Simple terms rp with friends but that depends on how much you know about dnf
Unfortunately the bot that brings up help panels is currently broken, but on the channel list if you go to "server guide" and then "learn to play" you should find a comprehensive introduction. Feel free to ask questions
So, to paraphrase the very helpful Dyno bot (that seems to be having a sick day), welcome! You can check out #learn-to-play to get started on learning the ropes
Yo, I'm fairly new to dnd, but want to try DMing and have some questions for the experienced ones here.
Never played a game before myself, but have watched a lot of content (critical role etc.) And read the basic manuals. What else do you think qualifies as minimum requirements before starting, referring to the purely gameplay technical side of things.
If a focus on the gameplay technical side, isa flawed approach, where should one put ones focus instead in order to be reasonably prepared to lead a campaign?
Leanring the rules of the game
#learn-to-play Has some resourses with the free basic rules
would anybody knows what the lost mind of phalandor give me a synopsis i cant really find anything the books online dont rly say much abt it
same with reddit all i see are really good reveiws
REally good as far as redbox games go:
basicly it revolves around Adventures Meeting with Gundran Rockseeker and over the course are embroiled in a mystory to find the Lost mines and Rescue Gundran who gets kidnaped by Gobblins
whats redbox?
Essensal Kits which normaly come in a red Box
i was thinking of buying it on roll20 so we can do it online and roll20 is awsome for quality of life
any ideas if thats any good?
You can either grab LMOP or use Phandelver and Below which contains Lost Mines
or am i scamming myself haha
is that a collection of like campaigns and stories?
Honestly Lost Mines if quite a solid starting adventure, It has a bit everything.
im like brand brand new
Phandelver and Belows Contains Lost Mines of Phandelver (1-5) and if you want it continues to 10 with Mindflayers and the farm realm coming into the picture. HOW EVER The shattered Oblisk (pt 2 of that) Isnt as good I dont recomend running that, Stick to Lost mines Imho
yeah thats what most of the things I saw online say abt it cuz Ive played a couple sessions as a player but this time im gonna be a dm for a bunch of ppl who have never played it before
Everyone have thier own opinion. Honestly as Far as starters go, Lost mine is Solid, and the same can be said with Dragon of Icespire peak.
For new Dms Bolth are good campangs to start off with.
I was thinking cuz idk how every1 is gonna like it 2 just get the lost mines its only 15 bucks so its cheap ill see if the group likes dnd
I would Also Recomend Tales from the Yawning Portal and Running Sunless Citidel as well since its jsut a small Dungeon Dive. Or Dragon Delves and run Bakers Doesnt.
i was looking around and just wondering whats the like genral opinion on Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden the setting sounded really interesting to me
or should i stay away from that as a inexperienced player and dm
I just got that actully, Youll have some work cut out for you since its a Sandbox and requires more Work on the Dm And its not the Most Newplayer Friendly
thx a lot tho overall ill def look into these bakers dozen seems like it would also be a goofy fun one
If you want some practice Dragon of Icespire Peak is a sandbox as well with a quest system thats easy to follow, (and dragon)
is a sandbox different from a campaign?
It is, Its very Fairy Tailish so Its more for fun then a serious oneshot
THey are the same just different styles.
You have Liniar Campangs and Sandbox campangs
ah
I think for the first one im def gonna try smthn more liniar
and lastely if u dont mind i saw that the lost mines were for like 6 players does that count the dm?
like 1 dm 5 adventures sorry kinda a dumb question
or 1 dm 6 players
Adventures are generaly balanced for 4-6 players Not including the dm
Lost mines can give you some experiance, mainly chapters 2-3 can be run at the same time opening up the moduel and allowing your players freedom to do sidequests and Get clues to find Gundram I would Recomend Looking at Adventure Spoilers for tips and tricks or asking more spesics there than here
Dont
7 players would only make sense if your playing a Meatgrinder, here, You can add additional Monsters *7 monsters-7 players
Honestly I would start small and work your way up, Your the Dm, you are allowed to say No.
For LMOP you wont need to change much really as allot of combat encounters can devolve into slug fests and Well Extream Danger. Just ask one of my players form last weekend who jumped into Shark infested water and Almsot died
big fan of bg3 but never played dnd before, how do i learn the game?
Guys
How do u play this dnd game
I wanna play too but do I like need to buy a game for it or something
Or do I need pc to play?
Dnd is a table top rpg where you use dice and pen and paper to play, the basic rules are free and can be found in the pins
Huh what?
Do u need real paper dice and pen?
?new
That’s not working ok @toxic lantern have a look at #learn-to-play tons of helpful info there
Nah u can just make characters on dnd beyond and click the "enable dice rolling for this character" button
The only thing u might want to think about getting is the rule books (u can play fine without it but u will only get one subclass option for each class)
This is for the ttrpg D&D not to be mistaken for the video games. In person, Pen, Paper, Dice, and the free basic rules, Online is a tad easier but well yeah
U can use dnd beyond while playing in person dnd if getting paper and stuff is difficult
hi, are there like groups for newplayers or stuff like that?
Can I use magical tinkering to make a copper coin look like a platinum coin and pay with it? Or a gold coin whatever I need to pay at the moment
Also, do I need to declare that to the DM that I'm using a fake tinkered coin or nah?
This is probably an ask ur dm situation
Like if u want 2 use fake money they might say no or put something in to let u do this
But isn't that the point of magical tinkering? For they eyes of the unwary.. I have a platinum coin in my hand
Npc or the other players don't know that
Using the 4th feature from magical tinkering, a visual effect should be enough to do that, sure.
However, since it's a magical effect, someone might find out about it at some point.
Of course you should. You're trying to trick an npc, not the DM.
If you're not actually telling the DM what you're planning to do, you can't expect the world to react in a way that matches the plan.
The plan was to spend 1 copper instead of a gold 😅 and keep my money
Right. And as far as the DM is concerned, you spent a gold, not a copper.
It's the same as rolling a die, getting a 8 and lying that you got a nat 20 instead
That's why I'm asking should the DM know? Can I just reveal later after the transaction so then the NPC will never find out?
I answered you
Trying to trick the other people at the table in such a way as to get an ingame benefit is adversarial play and may destroy trust.
Hiding things from the DM or lying to them is not how the game works
Ok I guess the dm should know my intentions, then it's up to the NPC /dm ask for a deception check or do nothing
Either way, it seems to be allowed to cheat coins with magical tinkering then
Yep. I'd describe exactly what you're trying to do and what class feature you're using to make it work.
A static visual effect appears on one of the object’s surfaces. This effect can be a picture, up to 25 words of text, lines and shapes, or a mixture of these elements, as you like.
It's a visual effect and that would work fine personally, if the person doesn't inspect it closely.
Since it's just a visual effect though, a crafty merchant may instead feel with their hands that the coin is copper instead of gold.
Can u get that rulebook free on internet like downloading a pdf or something
We arnt allowed to discuss pirateing
Just use the free rules it should be fine

Better to read rules but BG3 can help learn basics. It is not needed though.
Just Google dnd beyond
It's basically anything that doesn't take u to an buy a book page
The direct link was provided to them already. Googling dnd beyond isn't all that helpful in that respect. They'd still need to look for the free rules section.
The free rules can be found here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Best to focus on Chapter 1 and the Glossary. Then go through Chapter 2 step by step when ready to create a character.
Oh ok sorry
super fast question regarding artificers. if i use my enhanced weapon infusion on a revolver, would it add my int to attacks and damage with it?
All the Enhanced Weapon infusion does is add +1 to your attack rolls and damage. It makes no mention of adding your Intelligence modifier, so it would not add your Intelligence modifier to anything
Wait , there is a board game BG3 ?
the battle ready feat from battle smith says that you add your intelligence modifier to magical weapon attacks
and the infusion makes the revolver a +1 magic weapon
Hey all! I've bought the 2024 PHB cause im starting to learn more and more.
I've decided not to use paper character sheets since my handwriting is atrocious, so i want to use either my phone or a tablet as my sheet while playing. But when i look on roll20 or dndbeyond as a fighter i can only choose 4 fighting styles, while in the PHB there's way more styles. Does anyone know why?
dnd beyond requires you to purchase every book individually iirc
so whichever one added more fighting styles is the one you need to purchase
Hmm, that would mean i'd have to buy the PHB digitally again if i want to use a digital character sheet like on their site. That kinda sucks but i guess that makes sense
then i'll figure something else out regarding digital sheets
the website likely still checks for the older books when attempting to pull infor for character creation
i use the app "fifth edition character sheet" on my phone
it has all of the relevant information and processes for 5e. and you can just make edits to the sheet in regards to 2024
how do you find groups to play with as a new player?
if i choose a premade character in roll20 i do see that that character has the fighting style that i want which is dueling. But i apparently cant select it myself when i create a character. That's weird right?

Unfortunately, you need to buy a book that contains missing features. If the feature should be in the free Basic Rules, maybe you need to add it to your account? I mostly use the Beyond D&D android app, not sure how it works on the desktop, haven't created a new character there in a while.
Oh I've just read roll20
They have a book marketplace too
It might be the same process
Ah right… I’ve only just bought the physical handbook. Don’t really need it digitally as well 😅
That kinda sucks
The digital purchases are mostly for convenience. You can always fill out a sheet by hand, after all.
Yeah that’s also true
Yeah it does, there are also Physical+Digital books packs
I think in roll20 in particular you can also learn how to add any of the features you might want yourself, since the sheets are a bit more modular than what you get with ddbeyond.-
I think on roll20 you can just edit sheets and add custom stuff?
I haven’t really decided on which one to use. But I do know I want to use my phone or a tablet as my sheet
I think this is the fillable sheet: https://media.wizards.com/2016/dnd/downloads/5E_CharacterSheet_Fillable.pdf
But I guess filling it in by hand is the way to go then. The character creation process is way more fun and interactive haha
You could use the pdf sheet then? Mr Smith linked the 2014 one and here's the 2024 one
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/br/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Thank you all.
I’m going for an Orc Fighter who’s been flavored as a half-orc. Going eldritch knight 😄
I don't think Roll20 has a dedicated app, so you'll need to use the browser version, which might be inconvenient on a small screen
They do! But you have to create the character in the browser first before it shows up in the app
In the app you can also do your rolls etc, but where’s the fun in that! Physical rolls are way better
It's a companion app right? just for the character, not actually the game screen
Yeah just companion
Oh wait, you mean it only works when the game is running? Not for just looking up my character or using it in a physical game? Then I might have misunderstood
Hi guys, looking to get involved for the first time, hard to find games from Europe!
If it only works with a running game then I’ll have to switch to dndbeyond
Didn't know that, but I haven't used Roll20 too much lately
Ah, I've not used roll20 in a while, I didn't want to make the appearance that I know this for certain.
But from what I remember you didn't have access to your characters from games unless that game was running, or unless you had a subscription.
You might have better luck witg lfg european dnd discords or the lfg dnd reddit page

We’re playing our first oneshot this Saturday with a dm we hired through a service here in the Netherlands. To see if we all like it. If we do, then one of our friends wants to dm. So it’s all just new to everyone. I’ve played it a few times before but I was rushed through character creation by the dm just so we could get started so didn’t really learn a lot
Yes it is, even if you manage to get a party together, they might be scattered all across the continent and time zones and accents become an issue. There's a Reddit LFG_Europe section, I've found a couple of games there as well as Discord communities that play all sorts of TTRPGs online
Timezones are only important for timings. Your morning is someone else's evening. As long as you're both free to play, that's what matters.
Is there? Do you have a link to it?
Here's a great unofficial guide by iamrazorwing:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
There's a discord server with the same name LFG_Europe
Hello 👋 I’m new to dnd I’ve played 3 campaigns with friends, but other than that Im oblivious to any of the lore or how to DM a game. I’m just trying to learn so any help would be appreciated 🙏

Thanks dude 😁
There are Starter Adventures with advice for DMs, there are a lot of YouTube videos about DMing (Ginny Di, DM Lair, Dungeon Dudes etc.) and as of the lore there are many official settings (Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Eberron) or you can just create your own world! (Which is super fun for some people)
Yea me and my friends did that once, we did a civil war based campaign cuz we all like historical stuff.
You might enjoy Theros setting, it's loosely based on greek mythology
Yea I like Greek mythology I might give it a shot
Thats very strange
I thought you purchased it digitaly. You need to purchase them through the roll20 website to have access to it there
I never got a solid answer on if battle smith artificer's "battle ready" feat lets you use your int score on attacks made with the "enhanced weapon" infusion
Yea its bs that you cant just scan the book into roll20
yeah to show them like "Hey i got it!"
Here it is: #dnd-newcomers message
This answer is incorrect
And the right answer is?
Artificer infusions turn mundane items into magic items, so yes, any weapon that has an artificer infusion on it will count for Battle Ready
Infusing an Item
Whenever you finish a long rest, you can touch a non-magical object and imbue it with one of your artificer infusions, turning it into a magic item.
Battle Ready
When you attack with a magic weapon, you can use your Intelligence modifier, instead of Strength or Dexterity modifier, for the attack and damage rolls.
I’m tryna find it right now
BTW, this is true of pretty much all online platforms.
The best online investment can be one you use the most but for me, there is no substitute to a D&D Beyond digital purchase. I use it for both online and in person and while they are third party, there are a number of third party plugins available and usually free that will allow you to output a lot of Beyond info to many popular platforms including Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, and Foundry. Beyond also has some of the vest access if you will be doing both as most online platforms are harder to access your stuff for in person play. You still would not own it in the specific software, but it is by far the best investment for players if playing online or online and in person.
Sick thx
Hey, is there any DnD groups in Liverpool or Wirral ?
Have you checked in our #looking-for-dm or #looking-for-players channels? Those srr the spaces we permit group solicitation.
Please note, however, for user safety we do not allow people to ask for nor disclose personal information like exact age or exact city (in the case of small towns it makes people easy to find)
Is there any game shops around there (basically anywhere that sells dice) they might have a game u could join
Yeah ther is a place in the city i am going soon, 😋 i was just going to see if i can find a local group soon on here to chat
Question about combat, if you get surprised do you roll initiative?
I think yes but u don't take turns during the first round
Gotcha, and when you're attacking, does your attack bonus apply to the damage you deal or is it just for beating the AC?
You’ll struggle to do that on here as it’s a big international discord so asking for local stuff tends to put out to much personal info,
I had a look online (just google dnd stores Liverpool) and there are a few places in Liverpool that look like they would have dnd games on
Look up geek retreats too
That depends on what u mean
With martial wepons u roll a d20 and add your proficiency bonus and strength or dexterity modifyer (with any extra stuff) to the roll to hit
Then for damage it's just the str / dex + rolled dice for attack
My understanding is:
Imagine someone's armor class is 13 and I'm using a simple weapon like a dagger, and I have a +4 attack bonus (+2 proficiency and +2 dexterity)
I'll start by rolling a d20 and add 4 to it to try and beat 13
If I do that, I roll a d4 to see how much damage I do. Does the +4 get added to that damage?
No, u get a +2 added because it's your dexterity score
Hope this helps
Aha, so proficiency doesn't get counted when you're doing damage but it is when you're trying to beat the AC?
Proficiency is not added to damage rolls
Hello there. I would like to know if there is a way for me to play DnD online or something I don’t have a computer so only my phone but have been watching dimension 20 on dropout and it looks very fun. If this is impossible i understand I am just curious
Attack and damage are 2 different rolls
?tag new online
Check out the link above! Though I will warn you that in my experience, it's much tougher to play online with just a phone than with a laptop or something more powerful.
Ok gotcha I might go down to the table top games shop near me one day and ask there as well if they know how new players can get into the game, thank you though
To answer this, the response you were given by fuwy was correct... but only in the outdated rules from 2014. As for the current rules, a surprised creature rolls Initiative with Disadvantage, but still gets to act on their first turn.
Disadvantage meaning -5, right?
I genuinely didn't know that
Thats so weird, like why would they change it?
Disadvantage means that you roll the d20 twice, and then pick the lower roll of the two.
Yes you would. The specifics differ by version.
In 2014 any surprised creature would be unable to move or take actions/bonus actions on their turn, and couldn’t use reactions until after their turn passed, at which point the surprised condition would end.
In 2024 the surprised condition just gives disadvantage on initiative rolls; a creature can otherwise act normally on the first turn of combat
From watch the live plays I still thought that they roll initiative at the start of combat but their first turn was skipped because they are “surprised” and you get a surprise round on them
Ah beat me to it Dosh
A lot of the 2024 changes were implemented to prevent high burst damage strategies. Surprise rounds made combat way, way easier when the players were doing the surprise, to the point where the devs seem to have felt it was too much.
Ahhhh right, and advantage was taking the higher of the 2, right?
Alot of tables still run 2014
Including the one I'm at
Got it, thank you!
Those live plays were still probably running the older rules. The current rules were only released in late 2024, after all.
Yup, you've got it!
I got a set of 3; the player's handbook, DM's guide and monster manual. Are they still valid today or should I reference some other books for the rules?
Those are the 3 books that the released newer versions of last year, so whether or not the ones you have are up-to-date would depend on which version you bought
If you've got the 2024 editions of those three, they should be more than enough to run/play the game for years to come. Some older books like Monsters of the Multiverse or Bigby Presents Giants add additional player/DM options, but are all optional
I think these might be the older ones 😔 my friend bought them in 2022. Should I get the newer books or do you think I'd be able to get by with them for now?
Interesting o.o I'll be sure to look into the ones you mentioned
That depends on your personal preference. The old rules still work just fine, and there actually some people that prefer them. Its up to you whether you'd rather play the most up-to-date version of the game or if you can enjoy older content instead.
Alot of ppl use 2014 and 2024 is made to be backwards compatible
I wouldn't mind learning as long with these as long as there's no game-breaking content, so I guess I'll stick with them until I better understand the game then maybe get the newer ones
:0 that's good to know, thanks!
Yea learning 2014 is better cuz thats where most player's understanding is gonna come from
To be completely honest, i havent even read 2024 rules outside of class changes
Sounds good! Thank you :)
I mean, I don't agree with that. Absent of all other factors, I do think the 2024 rules are better for beginners to learn. Two main reasons: 1) Its specifically designed to be easier for beginners to understand 2) Its the current version of the game, which means as time goes on it will be more popular and more people will play it, which means at some point you'll have to make the switch. Learning the old rules first means double the work

I guess. Im speaking for right now. But in the long run it would be gpod to know 2024 rukes
this isn't the proper channel for looking for a group. Follow the instructions in the bot post above
I havent talked to many people that choose to play 2024 but thats probably jist my experiecne
Oh also, when you're DMing, what all do you keep behind the screen? Do you keep goals for the session or info about the PCs or?
Well, its certainly the more popular version in this server. Though the official D&D discord server is probably a biased sample
But from my own experience, my 3 playgroups all made the switch during the playtest and never looked back
Whatever you need! The screen is to prevent players from seeing your notes and rolls, and to help build tension that you're always up to something
Everything that should be immediately relevant to the upcoming events aswell as stats for monsters or npcs you're using
Ahhh, I thought that ppl kept the secrets to the universe or smthn else behind the screen 😭
Todays stuff is behind the screen. Everything in the future is in a note pad
When you're using maps, do you keep them behind your screen or do you use them as a communal thing? Or do you keep 2 copies 1 for yourself and another for the players?
Its all just personal preference. TBH, I've never actually used a DM screen before. I keep everything on my laptop instead
So you let the players see your rolls?
In person my dm buddy kept them in another room and brought them out when they were relevant. He had them in 10"x10" sheets
Online its automatic if you're using dimension 20 or something similar
Aha, I might do that too
No. I only play online now, so I just don't post my rolls to the group
I'll admit, at least 40% of the reason I use a DM screen in in-person games is to peer over it suspiciously
Ahhhh
That's diabolical
I think you mean roll20. Dimension 20 is the Dropout Live Play show
Well, usually the inside of the screen will have commonly needed rules so you aren’t going through the rule book during the session. I usually just have a notebook and monster sheets behind the screen. I roll my dice in the open
Gotcha. Also about rolls, is there a reason why DMs normally hide them or is it jus for suspense?
Correct. Im bad at names
suspense, potential to fudge, and it just gives the DM an air of authority over the game
As a DM, you don't always want players to see you rolling at all, let alone the specific result. Plus, you can lie about the roll if they don't see it (but that's a contentious topic).
I like to think that it’s to keep players from knowing the monsters’ attack bonuses and whatnot. But in actuality it’s unfortunately mostly to be able to lie to your players
See above
My dm friends hide their rolls. But thats cuz they fudge rolls if something really bad is gonna happen lol
Ahhh so gaslighting is a yes
If we're going to get deeper into DMing advice, it seems like it might be a good idea to move this conversation to #dm-discussion since we're not really talking about the basics of how to play anymore
Oh right, sorry

IDK
We don't play on the server, but we do have channels to link up with other folks to organize your games however you're able. See #find-a-game.
Since this is an online space, lots of folks play online, just not here.
Where do they play online?
A platform like Roll20 or Discord or using multiple tools at once.
lol just slow
Poor bot. I feel that today.
the article above has some helpful information about playing online
That's very
Very
Interesting
#dnd-rules is the place for that sort of question!
thank you :D
Ive actually started watching Critical Role from Campaign 2 and I am loving it so far. I tried watching the first episode of the first campaign but the audio was horrid
It was a different time back then, with a lot less budget
. But welcome to the hobby!
I kind of appreciated the lack of polish. Reminded me more of a real D&D table. I guess to each their own.

My class description says I can forgo the starting equipment and get 5d4x10 gold to buy own.
My background however gives me 15gp. Can I also use those 15gp to buy stuff at character creation?
Is the purchase made at character creation btw? Or in game?
It's made at character creation, yes
Also the rolling needs to happen in front of the GM I guess
That's correct.
I thought the gold from your background was added to your character at the end
Note that that's just using the outdated rules. The current rules grant you a flat amount of money instead.
I could be wrong.
Basically I want the same stuff of the starting equipment except two things I wish to swap out. Ideally I would like to roll for gold to make my own starting equipment, but with the choice that if I don't roll enough gold to buy everything then I keep the starting equipment
Talk to your dm. Trade items for their worth in gold then buy what you actually want
Most dms will be chill about it and let you swap stuff of the same lrice
Price*
Tbh i don't mind the starting equipment. Since my background gives me 15gp that's enough to buy a shield already. The shield is only one thing that doesn't come with the starting equipment
Still talk to your dm
And if possible I'd like to swap my starting armor with a chain mail (75gp)
I can start with scale mail (50gp)
hello
Ask you dm if they're cool with that. I dont see why they wouldnt be unless they are very rulser as written
Hi.
im brand new to this and need some guidance

You definitely should
Or at the bare minimum watch youtube videos explaining the basic rules then go from there with your dungeon master
I think i definitely need to go to a table top game shop one day and like see how to “start” cause it’s a lot. Looks like fun and I want to try it but I feel like there are a lot of walls in my way preventing me from playing
You don't need to read the entire players handbook, only the most important rules (which are contained in the free basic rules)
I'm kinda new and trying to find people and a dm
You can also do a 1shot with a premade character to learn with a psrty
Funnily enough there really arent
You really just need to drop into a campaign and play
It can definitely feel that way. Honestly, the most important thing is finding a DM willing to work with new players. Im not saying that's hard necessarily, but once you've got a group you're good.
Legit. Just play the game with a crew. Learn as you go and don't be afraid to make mistakes
Welcome welcome to D&D
Hey guys is there anything you could recommend or if you even would for one on one?
Me and around 3 of my friends are looking into getting into D&D, this is our first time ever attempting to get into it and we were wondering if we would have to nominate one of us as the DM or find someone outside our friends with more experience?
@ornate estuary you are better to play with a group of players than one on one
Both are options
I prefer having a friend dm. It lets you actually "rule of cool" things more
Learning hard rules is second to fun every time
There are pros and cons to both
I think you should DM, because you had the guts to be here and ask that question.
I choose you.
I would like to play with a group but most of my friends have declined and with my girlfriend and I being new are hesitant on looking for randoms.
I have been heavily debating that... But I would also like the thrill of being able to play too..
Understandable
Make a character that you control as if you were a player. Just remember to play the character without allowing the use of any knowlege from being the dm
If you make an encounter, dont just do the perfect plays. Play the character as if they were new to the encounter like everyone else
This is.... Not ideal for 1st time DMs id say
Also, dont make yourself the main character. Be a supporter or a background party member
To say the least
Like it can work for sure, but just id not recommend you give yourself that to worry about tbh
The alternative would be to do a 1 shot and have everyone try dming and whoever likes jt most does it
Yeahhhh its tough.
DMing is a thrill, but it feels different than playing
Different thrills
Dming is alot of second hand pride for the players
From reading whats been said. I believe I would like to DM, just in the near future since I still have no clue about playing let alone narrating and directing the game. What are the chances of me even being able to find a DM willing to take in 4 little newbies?
Im pretty sure theres an entire subreddit entire dedicated to that
I'd love to if I can find the time. At the very least my DMs are open to you for any questions you may have at all as a player or a DM. Obviously, this discord is just super helpful for that sort of thing in general.
Im only good for story beat questions. I dont ven have time to play a single game
I currently playe 2-3 days a week already. 💀
It's a tough balance
The girlfriend agro is rising
You have kids huh?
Ah there is? I should look into it more
can someone explain how exactly does DnD work.
like the base view of the game
im new and reading stuff is really confusing
and too long
You roll dice in order to meet certain requirements
you roll your dice, you move your mice
And if research of DND is too much, you're not going to enjoy all the reading that comes with the hobby
That's fair, let me see if I can find that shortcut that people use
At its basic level, the DM tells you what your characters see/experience, and you say what your character does. If something comes up like combat, Initiative is used and it is resolved in a turn-based way. If someone wants to attack someone, like with a sword or a crossbow or a spell throwing a mote of fire, that involves an Attack roll. Certain other offensive things can force Saving Throws, like a Fireball being more about the targets trying to not get hurt too bad than the aim of the caster.
And similarly, when it comes to things like sneaking, pickpocketing, feats of athleticism, knowledge recollection (like if your character knows the obscure lore of mummies from that one region in that empire 500 years ago, that you as players wouldn't have been infodumped on), medicinal knowledge, and charismatic efforts, you'd make an Ability Check to see how that goes.
Oh hey! Here it is!
This should help.

That's the only answer you're gonna get on an official server like this
Or borrow it from someone who has it yeah
It's collaborative roleplaying/storymaking/telling, with rules in place to make it consistent so it's not just "I hit you" "no you didn't" "i have an anti-sword shield"
There are rules so we can decide who does hit and who does have an anti-attack shield, in a way that isn't purely at the mercy of any referee bias one way or the other.
The basic rules are free on dnd beyond
hmmm
I have played before i just didnt really get it, but thanks
someone tried getting me to play it years ago but i don't think they even knew how to play
It requires someone good to referee it for the thing to work out
Well we have a ton of resources to look though, may it take some time
if i have the bot do i need a dungeon master?
What bot?
the dnd bot
So when someone wants to, say, attack the goblin with magic - they have to be a character that, in the rules, has access to magic, like a Wizard. And if they, say, use the Fire Bolt cantrip (cantrips are spells but easy to cast so you can spam it forever theoretically, not limited by any limited per-day resource), then they'd make an Attack roll, using their bonus to hit with spell attacks, against that goblin's AC. If their attack roll total meets or beats that goblin's AC, they hit the goblin with that fire bolt, and the rules that ensue such as the damage Fire Bolt deals.
discord server bot
Yea, dnd is a group game. I'm not sure the bot functions that way
No, it doesn't run DND. AI isn't good at running DND. AI hallucinates.
hmmm
It's a social game you play with other humans.
I mean you could play solo but I would absolutely not use AI for it
Well, it can be
I play with my friends on discord. We've got people from Australia, Finland, etc. Multinational. We play bingo with our antics.
Tabletop sims make it pretty fun
It does, I've used it before.
Plus you can move the minis
not free though
And actually roll dice
Not much in this world is free unfortunately
I believe roll20 has a free package you could use
Tabletop sim is a tabletop sim as it says, but I also recommend Owlbear Rodeo. Very nice and simple, easy to make it do more via extensions (free)
how do you do the map on discrod?
Yep
Even has a discord attachment to hook everything up
Practically don’t need the paid version
Anyways I joined this server because I just recently played for the first time and got really engrossed with it enough to start trying to make my own campaign for people to play so if anyone has any tips or stuff for first time running a game let me know please
What I’ve always done is screen share the map from roll20
There's one way I know of which is using an old Avrae alias/extension which uses very specific commands and integration. Not advised.
Ideally the group just uses a Virtual Tabletop (or "VTT") while in a voice call. I use Discord for VC and Owlbear Rodeo as a VTT and DNDBeyond for character sheets, for example.
Really, things have been made where you don't need to spent any money on dnd between using the free rules on dnd beyond, with some limitations, and free packages of table top simulators
I would recommend 2014 as that free rules package is larger than the 2024 one
Are you the one gming?
Oh lordy. I really need to type up a permanent response to this.
Welcome to D&D all of you newbies!
Ooo, that's what we have #dm-discussion for, mostly if you don't have anyone else to talk with irl
Oh oops
Yes
Well i will be
Its still in the early planning stages
First time, I recommend running a simple beginner adventure, like Lost Mine of Phandelver, Sunless Citadel, or... something about a Stormwreck Isle. It'll be nice to have a solid foundation to look through for answers, and it'll help you get familiar with a flow.
Then I’d suggest not being too dead set on the campaign happening a certain way and also improv skills go a long way in dnd
Most of the fun/memorable stuff in game weren’t scripted
My favorite advice is that it's much more helpful to understand an NPC, a setting (town, forrest etc), or anything else than it is to have a script written in stone for it. It's basic advice, but my #1 of the day I guess. Know a bit about what drives your NPCs and what they want/feel, know in general for whatever setting the vibes and in general what an average day there could look like maybe. If you're able to learn those things, it'll help you massively when your players inevitably (and probably quickly) drive off of your script if you have one.
I guess that could be true. But I've had some people say that making up your own campaign to begin with will make you better at it
Don't be scared of it, have fun with the chaos! It may not even seem like chaos to your players anyways. They may think you had it all planned from the start. 😉
i see i see
It's largely a trial by fire, sure one could learn how to read in a different language by themselves, but it's unnesseasrly difficult to do it on your own.
Game mastering? i think
oh thanks
That's why a number of resources had been made in order to guide folks though DMing and some dos and don'ts
So you don't have to do stuff, let's say, make your own world from the ground up.
I tried that, didn't go well. Second try I used a pre-established setting and I have a wiki to look at when I need answers. Helped massively.
Learn from my mistakes
I've already began a lot of work on that unfortunately
I have ancients guiding me though learning how to DM, so luckily I don't have to do it alone
The manual recommends that you do that though
Oh, you can just add it to prexisting worlds
Nobody said you couldn't change anything
The concept of running a game in a world i know nothing about seems a lot more difficult than one i created
You can make your own world, even as a new DM 100%
There are pros and cons to both
As with anything
i see
If you enjoy making your own world? Go for it.
I'm not mapping out an entire planets worth of geography though
Well yet at least
I created a province for my players to explore and am in the process of building it pretty much
Which will take a while, but when thats done i want to try playing
At least you don't have to worry about scaling of that degree too much until tier 3...
Yeah a region is perfectly fine
You'll probably need to think about your gods etc
How you want the outer planes to work MAYBE depending on what characters interact with
But you don't have to do them all
?
That's between you and your players
Whats tier 3
What do you mean outer planes
Like other planets?
Oh, we have different sets of levels organised into four tiers.
1 to 4 is tier 1, where you expect players to deal with bandits and helping old ladies with gathering herbs in regular forests
Devils, demons, faeries
5 to 10 are where you deal with a tad more complex sisuations like, perhaps fueding lords within a small region. That's considered tier 2.
They come from other plains if existence. You'd maybe want to know if they exist in your world etc, if you have characters looking to maybe be tied to any number of them
Ive played in home brew settings before where "devils dont exist" . That's a big deal.
Hit Point Dice is essentially what helps determine your HP.
A level 5 barbarian has a total of 5d12 hit point dice. As they levelled up their HP increased, whether they chose to roll their HP past 1st level or take the average values.
A level 5 cleric would have 5d8, on the other hand, less total HP.
It's how we do "health" in the TTRPG.
Tier 3 reaches our towards international conflicts, between Kingdoms and even empires. Slowly you might touch upon interdimentaional threats. This features levels 11 to 16
I think my game will use all of the creatures/monsters listed in the manual
Each time the Rage is extended, it lasts until the end of your next turn.
what does this mean
my rage stays active until my second move ends?
Smart
my first campaign will at least
Tier 4 is where things have fully swung to fighting gods and traveling the Multiverse. The final levels of 18 to 20
very interesting
Is this an official rule or just a general agreement
Well, fighting the avatar of gods. We can't fight them, perhaps reach their level.
It's often been presented to be as a guide line for what to expect for certain levels, but the termology is very present within the DND community
i see
But, do bare in mind, adventerers are considered the cream of the crop by level 5 and preforming feats the adverage person couldn't even begin to compherend
Now if my auto correct would work with me and not agaisnt, that would be great
I've not related to anything this hard all week.
i've been reading the rulebooks through and through trying to ingest the information so that its ingrained into it
Don't force it too much, trying to get her all that information at once will drain the fun out of anything.
I even had to be reminded of that today, give yourself room to make mistakes.
True but i need some things to be second nature
You could spend a thousand hours taking in information related to D&D and still not feel ready for that 1st session
Not saying dont read what you want, but dont expect for everything to be a breeze necessarily
Knowing the rules is half the battle at best. Most would say less?
Half the battle is knowing your players are going to ruin the campign, and that's okay
Improv is definitely half the battle. 😂
Obviously i'm going to have to look up the encounter and combat tables and stuff but for average rules i want to be able to know that stuff
Even if they're the sweetest darn bean in existance, they're going to do something and it'll change everything.
That's fair, that's fair
New DM spends 10 hours working on this plot line jumping off from a goblin ambush. Player sees the blockage in the road and just goes off into the forrest nearly opposite the direction.
Rip New DM brain. 🥲
Jokes on them, the plot moves to find them
Obviously, but the poor new DM tho
First lesson in DMing, you cannot predict what the players will think of lol
no one answered my question 😭
Each time the Rage is extended, it lasts until the end of your next turn.
what does this mean
my rage stays active until my second move ends?
I think maybe you should just read the given material...
Mostly as the foundations required to understand the statement hasn't been made
