Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Okay thank you so much!!
I’m not sure how I should go about starting a game with anyone. Can someone help me figure out where to find a game?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
#looking-for-players is where dms advertise thier games for others.
#looking-for-dm is for players seeking DMs, how ever chances of a game are kinda low due to the dm player ratio
You can solve this disparity by learning how to DM and making sure your players know how to too.
Newer here, sup.

I somewhat already know what I'm doing in DND but I want to find a DND partner to play it with. Just us two. Anyone interested?

Hey folks please do not solicit/organize games outside of the Looking For Game channels - it's off-topic here in the normal discussion channels.
See #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels.
#looking-for-players is where folk list their games.
#looking-for-dm is where you advertise your group as looking for a DM.
#looking-for-community is where folk share their servers.
It’s a daunting task but yeah
i think im actually starting to understand how to fill out my character sheet and i feel like a brainiac
woo hoo. feel free to ask any questions
i feel like megamind
THANK YOU
How would I join a group I’ve never played before so I would like to join and watch and try learn before joining so I don’t slow down a group is that possible
I mean you can see all the ads in #looking-for-players how ever they will only consider people who will play, rarely would they allow some rando to listen in.
Ok thank you for the information
Any suggestions on that? I’m running my first campaign and I’m the DM for my group. I think it’s going fairly well but I was hoping to join another session as a player to kind of learn from another DM and improve. I’ve been watching Mercer’s vids on YouTube.
With the ratio the way it is I almost wanna throw my hands up and start running sessions for others lol
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
are there any resources anyone knows of for new DM’s i’ve been playing a few months now and i’m doing a one shot later this month (outside of the DM’s handbook)
apologies if this is covered somewhere obvious i just joined
Yeah I almost ran this one - but opted for Icespire Peak and modified it a bit to make it more of a narrative instead of a sandbox.
I guess I was hoping for a way to know if I’m doing a good job and make sure that I can do a good job for hosting a session? Maybe I could make a session and flag it and post it’s my first session?
Check in with the folks in #dm-discussion - there's also some useful pinned messages there.
I’ve looked at Ginny D and Mercer on YouTube and felt they were helpful. Prowled Reddit for suggestions on specific campaigns too. I’m new to it too lmao
"How to run the game" from MCDM has some pretty good info on running D&D for DMs
I also like Sly Flourish's "The Lazy DM" materials which has lots of useful info on how to efficiently use your prep time and avoid over-prepping
This is OP advice I’m absolutely sold right now
hi everybody, does somone know wich discord i can join for discover a french community, bcs its been 1hour i search and im actually lost in the big world of D&D
I don't. But perhaps use Discord's Server Discovery tool to find French gaming servers that may have crossover with folks who play D&D.
I mean icespire is a good sandbox all the missions serve the narrative which is, kinda non existent other than there is a dragon go kill ot. You can add a narrative element to it sure
(Funny story I accidently led my character to a location way to early rip me trying to rebalance the fight lol)

@neon iron I can recommend the following video series by Matt Colville if you'd like to know more about DMing:

There’s a lot of other YouTubers focused on DMing and a lot more examples to draw from than just Matt Mercer.
thank you broooo
hey what is a text game?
Pretty much what it says on the tin. A game that is player over text messages instead of over vc or at a table.
Usually those games are run with the help of a bot that does the dice rolling.
It's commonly referred to as "PbP", which stands for play by post.
hmm ok thank you
Hello!!
Yeah Matt keep In mind been in the entertainment industry for years
Heyo, can someone explain how to fill out a physical character sheet? I've only worked with d&d beyond and some of my character stuff is homebrew which is a bit confusing to add in d&d beyond
Which parts are you struggling with?
We can certainly help, but just out of curiosity, how much expirience do you have with D&D? Are you familiar with the basic rules?
Not very familiar, my first campaign I've used the guided character creation in d&d beyond and not much else as it was a homebrew campaign that went off an existing module (Mines of Phandelver or something like that)
The process of filling a paper sheet is basically the same as Beyond but you have to locate the rules and manually apply any implications.
Best way to fill a paper sheet is to follow the character creation chapter in the PH or free Basic Rules. Basic rules link below:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#CreateYourCharacter
One trick you can use is create all the non homebrew stuff on Beyond, copy the results on to a paper sheet, then modify the paper sheet with any homebrew.
Okay, Thanks!
Hello im new to dnd I have no idea how to play I recently bought stormewreck isle starter set and the essential kit but I don't know were to begin and I don't have anyone to play with can anyone give me some tips
Have you read the rules included with those sets? You might also read over #learn-to-play!
I read the stormwreck isle rulebook not the story book that the dm would use
Are you the DM or a player?
I've never played before so im a player but eventually once I really learn what I'm doing I wanna learn how to be a dm to
Well, you need three other players and one person willing to be the DM. You can't realistically play without a group!
I know that but i dont have anyone to play with or anyone who would be willing to try
School clubs, game/hobby stores, and local libraries sometimes have games to join (plus you can always suggest that they host something if they don't already). Otherwise, you can post an ad yourself in #looking-for-dm by following the instructions in #find-a-game. Or you can reply to ads in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community.
Ok thanks that helps
Good luck!
Thanks

The basic rules are in the link right above!
Question: what exactly is homebrew
No tag homebrew found in category new.
?homebrew
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.
Ah ok
Above is a more comprehensive explanation, but simply put it's "Rules that you just make up."
Not every table allows homebrew, and it's not usually recommended to try to use any homebrew as a new player.
Not sure if #ddb-support can help, but it's worth a try!
Alr I'll try
I recommend filling out a character sheet to go through the process. I wouldn't expect to use the character as is (though it might serve as a good basis!).
Bringing character ideas to the table is generally a good method.
do you have a link for a template i can use?
Ah I'm so hype, pitching a 8bit Dnd campaign based on final fantasy
THANK YOU
Hi everyone i want make a campaign in the monster hunter universe, it would be my fist time being a dm how do i do it? I have some ideas for some sistems but im too new to this
If you are thinking of adding mechanics to DnD as a newbie know that that is ill-advised so proceed at your own risk. If you are thinking about straight up creating a whole new tabletop system, we might not be able to help you.
All my friend are kind of newbie, the new systems are nothing too extreme, cooking is basically every player do a perception check and the designated chef decides the buff(damage buff, defense buff) , the rest of players(or helpers) help to get the effectiveness of the plate(how much hp it gives, how much sp it gives and how long it lasts)
And the monster seeking sistem is just perception checking with hints of monsters in the map, and carisma checks with npcs, it will help the players to locate the monsters
Sounds like a good one shot idea
What do you mean by "sp" here?
Stamina points(one of the mechanics of monster hunter) i dont know how to add it to dnd yet tho
Maybe not i dont want this to be too complex my friends are as newbies as i am
Yes, see this is kind of what Alley Ham was getting at. These are some complex things you're cooking up here (pun intended).
But homebrew is like modifying a car's engine. There's a lot of important parts that already are in place to make sure everything runs smoothly. If you've never ridden a car before, do you think it's a good idea to try to modify your car's engine?
Not really, but i would still like to adapt some parts of the mh universe to dnd, i decided to not change much the classes just reskin them
Then continue on like that. No need to add extra mechanics at all. Just play DnD in a Monster Hunter flavored world.
The individual design of the weapon is up to you, but no matter how it looks it will have the same mechanics.
For example, you could describe your longsword as particularly long and thin... but that doesn't actually affect how far it can reach. All longswords have the same reach, no matter the design.
The same concept, sure, but the same acquired equipment, experience, etc.? Not likely (outside of Adventurer's League).
If i was writing a adventure, could i incorporate extra features (spin wheels, dice boosting) also, if you were playing dnd with 2 people could u play while also being the dm
In your usual DnD game, you use the same character for the full campaign.
When you start a new campaign, you usually make a new character, or use that original character as though starting over from the beginning.
Almost no games (outside of Adventurer's League) allow players to carry items and progress over from other campaigns.
You can do virtually whatever you like as the DM, but it should be cool with your table. As for playing while being the DM, you already do! If you mean controlling a single character to adventure along with the party, that's usually recommended against. But no one can stop you.
You can incorporate whatever you want into your game if you're running a homebrew adventure, but it's usually recommended to keep things as simple as possible (especially if you're new to the game).
As for playing a character as the DM, that's usually referred to as a DMPC, and is often considered a faux pas. I would not recommend it.
Thanks! Im writing a adventure for me and my friend where theres an evil dungeon master, so im gonna play as a character as well because the DM stuff is random mostly
Hey, Looking for a DND 5E online ROLL20 campaign, 2 slots available for myself and a friend?
Is there a channel for this?
thank you
DnD as a game relies extremely heavily on DM oversight. Other tabletop games, such as gloomhaven, sound more in line with what you're describing.
Its gonna be like: D&D x Gloomhaven but set in the present day
I certainly wouldn't recommend that for a new DM.
Hi, folks! Do anyone have a sort-of tutorial on my limits within homebrew?
If you're new, you probably shouldn't be trying to homebrew. But there aren't any explicit limits: it's a matter of what's in line with the game's design (which takes some experience to parse out) and what your table will tolerate.
Hello and welcome to the new players who have joined us
I know it’s a difficult process, but I wish to learn.
I don't know if #homebrew could point you toward resources, but that'd be my first stop!
Please use the Looking For Game channels (or private message game posters who have posted there) to solicit/organize a game.

Thank you, didn't realise!
I want to get my first expansion, Xanathar’s Guide to Everything or Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything
Tasha's is more recent and will likely align better with the 2024 update but really both are great books IMO.
Also this channel is more specifically for new to D&D folks to help get started with core game rules and mechanics.
I wonder why are we getting more players who want to DM and discuss other things not related to this channel
hello, is this server about a video game named d&d, or the roleplay table game?
This is for the TTRPG D&D
The MMO D&D game has its own support forums
Baldurs Gate 3 also has its own support forums but we do have a channel for discussions: #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers
good. right place. sorry i played this one in high scool last time, only once. couldnt learn it well and lost contact with those friends.

thanks man. wanted to learn it for a long time. and chatgpt isnt a very good dm. thanx
No it’s not lol
Ooh yeah AI is a very poor substitute to playing D&D with a human friends
ChatGPT & Google Gemini is great for suggestions to help you prepare for a session
In my opinion
But never use it for a DM
I forgot that thing was still running…
Actually both D&D mmos are still running. DDO and Neverwinter still have players.
-# sorry I know this is off topic, I'll stop here.
hi
hello there
hey guy's, i currently have my D&D character ready to use when i am in a session!
checked the rules and stuff, but couldnt understand that homebrew stuff, does it matter if a player understands it
Homebrew is stuff the community makes to add on to their D&D games (e.g. unofficial rules, items, wepons, spells, monsters, settings, etc.) to achieve a certain vibe or playstayle in D&D that the out of the box rules may not provide.
thanx again man
but i gotta ask one last thing for today. i wanna make a char that is mainly a fighter but knows little magic to assist him. does this dude count as a cleric or a fighter(asking bc the guy will have very little magic power)
There is the Eldritch Knight fighter subclass which is a fighter who knows some magic
That's available in the Players Handbook
sorry man, thought of that class as a support class and i imagined of my char only using magical stuff on himself, but now i am thinking he can probably cast these to support too. mb
There are a number of people that build Eldritch Knights that way as buffing oneself often means not needing much Intelligence which makes it easier to distribute stats for a Fighter.
i see, thanx
Another way to just know "a little magic" is to multi-class but only take a small number of levels in the casting class.
or get a feat that gives you a few magic tricks so to speak
Howdy yall, was just wondering if ther ewas anoying willing to help me do a character creation? I was mostly interested in just filling out a stat sheet, all other flavor and character background stuff i have in mind, im just having trouble following the rules lmao. I can call/screenshare if possible. if this isnt the place to ask let me know
I have 14 characters :D
Somehow already made 14 yet i havent played a game
-# tbf most communities im a part of dont do these kinds of stuff
@ember cosmos I can help you with your character sheet and @molten perch that’s great so you will have a lot to choose from when you are ready to join a group
:D
I have 3-4, only played in 1 campaign. Dunno if I could manage 14 lol
I mean it’s kinda like making ocs, and for the stuff i cant memorize thats what the sheet is for so
uh helloo, iam new to the whole dnd thing
how do you go baout multiclassig
like through dndbeyond or like, "whats the point"
what do you need
mainly on getting to actually playing
ah. have you made a sheet yet
erm nah. is that for my character
"character sheet" yeah
it documents everything about the character, such as stats and such. do you already have a group of friends to play with?
okay okay, is there a template or how exactly would i go about that
there is a literal sheet for it, yeah. or you can use dndbeyond's character builder
do you have the sheet pdf
nope
ok
could i see yours possibly just to have a refrence and stuff
there's stat requirements for it which are only not required if the dm states they arent required but you basically gain everything you would from that level in that class including their hit die for increasing hp.
i.e
you have a 1 level in barb and have a total of 12hp, if you take a level in wizard you gain their hit die(1d6) + con for hp, you would also gain any features they have like spell casting
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/downloads/2024-character-sheet.pdf does this work fine yeah?
ahh, thats the "OneDnD" version, which uses 2024 rules. things may be a smidge different between 2014 rules and 2024 rules, so make sure you understand which set of rules your group is using
the rules are only slightly different though
ok so download yours and use that just to be safe?
the information should be able to travel between each sheet rather easily, so i dont think its too big of an issue!
ok! could i see maybe one youve made?
i cant find any example ones online for some reason
aha, i would if i had any lower level ones...
so, there are plenty of tutorials online. additionally, there are some resources that you will have to consult to fill in the blanks. for example, there are a list of "backgrounds" and "races" that you choose from, and your "class" will determine what saving throws have "proficiency."
i suggest having the player's handbook open on dndbeyond, or if you have a physical copy of the book, open that up. i am unsure which timezone you in, but the western audience of dnd tends to be asleep or winding down around this time. some better help may come in an amount of hours.
is there a free guide book?
ah THanks!
they are largely similar, however, certain basic rules such as classes have been reworked between versions.
how to find an onkine party? im completely new to dnd but can learn
with great power comes great need to take a nap
No :]
Oh wait thats a quote
I think
I need ro reread the books-
yup
also thye made 3 books abtnico and 3 new books in the percy jackson lineup too
Nvm im burning them i cant keep up
iam confused a little about the Ability Modifier and how to calculate it?
Ability Modifier is different from Ability Score.
Ability Modifier is equal to (Score - 10)/2
So, lets say your Ability Score is 16. We will subtract 10 from it, making it 6. Divide this by 2, and you will get 3.
Your Ability Modifier is +3.
Ability Modifiers are based on the value of the underlying Ability Score, i.e., the Strength Ability modifier is based on the Strength score.
There's a formula that could be used, but it's easiest to just read it off the table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/phb-2024/creating-a-character#DetermineAbilityModifiers
so where would i put that right above the ability score?
Yep.
what if its -0.5?
If you want the full table that includes values possible lower than 3 and higher than 20, this table has a more complete list:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/phb-2024/playing-the-game#AbilityModifiersTable
I cannot attach images. However, in the 2014 version, it is right below it the Ability Score part. For 2024, it is to the right of the Ability Score.
Round down. You round down every time you have decimals in this game.
whoops, uh, we dont do half-numbers. if its something like 17, you round down. haha.
if you have a 9, its -1. if you have an 11, its 0. if you have a 13, its +1
so 0?
what number is the stat?
so its 9 for
Yes, pretty much. I'm assuming the score is 11.
its 9, so its -1
Wait, no, I'm stupid.
correct
ohh that makes it intresting becuase its the thing you add when you role correct? so if its a negative thats toughhh
if iam right
correct. if you get a negative to a roll, its kinda womp womp.
damnn
typically when you get into a game, you will be asked to roll stats in front of the dm or in a way visible to the dm. i suggest using the standard array of stats provided by the game for now to make your template so you can just replace them easily
But that's also why you are a member of a party of adventurers. Not everyone is awesome at everything so you need each other.
^^^
okay okay my charisma is a +3
thats a dub
if you are a talker or charisma caster, that is an excellent investment
human rogue
i went with i guess Basic stats? but then humans get +1 i belive?
i think rogues typically invest in dex and wisdom, but a smooth talker rogue would definitely be a good play. make sure you get high dex too
humans get +1 in all stats according to 2014 rules yes
i think it would be funny to be a smooth talker rogue
strength is my only negative
Hey, if you want to, it's your character. Rogue abilities are mostly tied to Dex though, so you may notice you struggle at things that Rogue does if you don't also have Dex.
rogues do not need strength, you made a good choice
i thought so. it makes most sense
yeah. some classes cant really function without certain stats. a low int wizard is useless
iam currenlty on saving throws...
dont build to be optimal, but build to be on par with the rest of the group
ok ok. where do i find saving throws? sounds intresting'
thankfully thats listed underneath your class.
rogues are inherently proficient in dexterity and intelligence saving throws.
your normal saving throw bonus is equal to your ability modifier. however, because you are proficient in those two stats, your saving throws are increased by a scaling stat called your proficiency bonus
at levels 1-3, your proficiency bonus is 2. if you have a 16 in dexterity, you have a +5 in your dex saving throws.
kinda confusing, sorry 😅
is it at all possibly i just send you a screenshot of what i have so far?
kinda is but once you get it you get it
you will have to dm me, but yes
hello, im basically completely new to this game except for a really laid back campain a bit ago, wanted to get into it and play more!!

Wizard
Study arcane magic and master spells for every purpose
Wizards are defined by their exhaustive study of magic’s inner workings. They cast spells of explosive fire, arcing lightning, subtle deception, and spectacular transformations. Their magic conjures monsters from other planes of existence, glimpses the future, or forms protective barriers. Their mightiest spells change one substance into another, call meteors from the sky, or open portals to other worlds.

Huh, cool.
Hello guys is there a way to buy the map of stormwreck isle ?
=^.^= Hi to all.
Hi :D
Welcome new folks. Feel free to ask your questions
are spell slots an in lore thing? like when i rp can my characther say "i dont wanna use one of my spell slots for that"?
Hello I wouldn't say im new but I haven't played in almost 8 years I haven't been able to find a group that is willing to help with relearning the Basics
In my games, if the spell they want to use in a RP situation would normally take a spell slot, I almost always make them use that slot to do it.
Keep in mind, however, that cantrips don't take a spell slot!
oh sorry for the confusion, that was just an example i made, i meant to ask if characters themselves know what spell slots are or would they refer to them as mana or smt similiar
If you have questions about the official lore, then #dnd-lore is probably the best place to ask. But lore is the main thing most DMs change for their own worlds. So its always a good idea to check with your DM before assuming something is true or not true
Ah, okay!
In my games, no, "spell slots" is a more meta-game/mechanical thing. In-game, most characters will say things like "prepared spells".
i see, thank you both of you! also i thought about using #dnd-lore but the desription said its more about dnd worlds and settings so i thought that didnt apply, my bad!
No problem at all. I do think Steve's stance is the generally accepted one. Spell Slots only exist as a game mechanic, rather than an in-world concept. But every DM probably has their own way of explaining what that game mechanic actually represents
Do yall know of there every being like one shots or campaigns that help returning or new players learn the basic or is it faster to just watch a bunch of YouTube vids and slam my head into the wall till I breaks
You can definitely find beginner friendly games and start playing. But they aren't like public events or whatever. I don't "know of" any specifically, but normal people post them places and run the games all the time
what I have seen in the looking for players the dms usually specify if new players are welcomed
Would you say it is better to say something up front like Hey?I haven't played in forever.I'm gonna make mistakes. Please correct them type of thing
Some people will advertise that specifically, but that does not mean posts that don't say it will refuse a newcomer. All you have to do is ask if its ok for you to join
so yes, this is exactly what you should do. As a side note, I would highly recommend that you look for an adventure that starts at a low level. Level 1 preferably, but absolutely nothing above 5. You don't want to get overwhelmed by complexity and choice paralysis when you're just starting out
Thank you.I guess I'll just have to jump in and try to start from the ground up again

ok, i am ready an more or less know the lore of the Game thanks to BG3... but i would want to see if there is any DM available
Please use the Looking For Game channels to find a game - solicitng or organizing games outside of those channels is off-topic. Please read #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels.
Just to Know is there an expectation that everybody uses à type of lingo ?
Or Knows the lore of dnd
We have a Lore channel for discussing offical D&D lore (stuff that official D&D materials have stated at some point).
But the thing is, the only lore that matters is the one your group uses for their D&D game
But if you want to read up on some official D&D lore, check out #dnd-lore and the Forgotten Realms wiki is one of the better resources for Forgotten Realms lore/info.
Ok so the lore that is used in the canpaign
Forgotten Realms is one of the official D&D settings
Yeah each table/group and campaign will run things differently
Does the DM explain the setting before a canpaingn?
So focus on what matters for your game, not what other D&D sources say
Sometimes - depends on the kind of campaign/game.
Thanks
Some folks get deep into the lore of their game/setting, others are more focussed on having the gameplay develop the story as it goes.
So the focuss can change depanding on the group
Yep it can change based on the group, the campaign, or even the specific D&D game session
Thank you for your time then
So I’ve been really excited to host my first dnd session and have been basically shaking. One of my party members who knows even less than me wants to be a gunslinger (he’s new as well). In my excitement I told him that he can be a chaotic neutral gunslinger with an older gun (I barely know how alignments work). After I committed, I realized I don’t know how to make it work including damage, ammo, if reloading should take a turn and I think it would be cool but I don’t know how to make it cool. Please help me 😭
You can talk to them again and say what you just said - it's okay. Now may not be the best time to run a gunslinger class if you're new to D&D
Thank you that’s good advice

Making a gunslinger is deceptively simple, and really only complicated if you make it complicated. The rules already have options for solid gun users even without homebrew. If you're playing the 2024 rules, guns are right there in the PHB/Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#Weapons
(See the Musket and Pistol)
The drawback with guns is that they (like crossbows) can only be fired once per turn without a particular feat. In the case of firearms, there's Gunner from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
But once you pick up that feat, it's remarkably like playing an archer, but your weapons go "bang"
so i get to play a mapach for first time anyone have some fun/funny thing i can do with Scroungecraft to mess with party and lean in the crazy coon theme?
crazy
coon
Maybe start with not calling it that 😬
Not sure where I post this as I’m new to discord communities and DnD 😅
There’s no ice breaker channel so gonna awkwardly post here.
Hi, hello.
Hello there, new guy here played once DND loved it dont know much about it but i would like to play it again i created a rogue for the first time and id like to give it a try so if some of you have a group or would like newling please PM me lmk id love to play some thank you!
Hey guys I'm about to start a campaign with some friends and would like help making my character (preferably someone who has seen avatar the last Airbender)
I got you bro
dm me
Never played D&D but wanna try, issue is i dont think i could join a campaing that is weekly or like every week same hours and days since i tend to have stuff come up or just uni requiring me to study more, what should i do?
Groups are usually pretty chill about it
Yeah but i dont wanna slow it or like not be able to join that time, i tend to have good amount of free time but is never consistent when
Yeah thats fair I'm pretty new to so I'm also trying to figure this out
Thats fair too, i usually just play hours on row when i got time or just do stuff i like so i am not consistent on when i play videogames or anything
sometimes i play a sunday 6 hours other time i dont do at all other time i play 10 hours and like that all week
so i am having issues figuring out how to join a campaing i could actually be part of to try
Same
Which also cant blame others, like many probably have same schedule and always free on certain hours
Yea true
I’m new to dnd and if anyone has a extra spot open im down
Check out #find-a-game
Soliciting games outside of the lfg channels isn't allowed
hello
Try checking #looking-for-community , many servers run Westmarch style games where you keep the same character and sessions come as they're offered.
Hi everyone I’m new! My name’s Amy Lee and I play a changeling urchin bard called Nylan.
Hey I'm new and wondering where to go to ask questions
You're in the right place! What would you like to know?
So I'm trying g to build a wizard and it has to start at lvl 5 and I've never played above lvl 2 and idk how many 2nd and 3rd lvl spells I need to pick
The recommended way is to start at level 1 and then just progressively level up until you reach the level you want, applying your features along the way.
For example, the wizards spellcasting feature says the following:
Whenever you gain a Wizard level after 1, add two Wizard spells of your choice to your spellbook.
So you can just increment by 2 whenever you reach a new level, with some caveats. Some subclasses might give you more, so read up on them carefully.
Alright thank you!
Out of the eight additional spells you'd learn, up to 2 can be level 3, and up to 6 can be level 2. Any number can be level 1. You'll also get another cantrip, don't forget that.
Okay thank you as well!
okay just making sure i understand i can have 2 lvl 3 and 6 lvl 2 or is that just the most i can of either
The most you can have (discounting subclass features).
When reaching level 3 and 4, the spells you can pick up can be level 2.
When reaching level 5, the spells you can pick up can be level 3.
ooohh okay thank you
Yeah that's why it 'staggers' almost

Hey so I have a question about text only games as I don't really understand them I mean what is the advantage of having text only yes you would a have a log of everything but everything would also take longer no? And of course yes some people would prefer this as they may not have mics or may not wanna use them but am I missing something
Yes, yes, and folk can always look for the kind of game that supports the way they want to play.
yes, some people might not be able or willing to talk on a mic
theoretically, text based games also dont need fixed times to play, people post when they find the time

Yo hi I’m also new, I was just wondering where I can find a game of dnd with others? Is that a thing here? I’m sorry if I’m somehow missing a special channel where you can request it, at least I assumed that if that was a feature here, that’s how it would work.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
So you can just ask anywhere?
Oh wow, it would’ve helped if I hadn’t been blind to this before asking that question: https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227
Hmmmm actually I think I’ll just wait until I can find a group irl…
And that’s all I’ve really come here for
So bye
Do any of you have tips on how to make character creation easier for the first time players ?
In what way if it's how do you make the idea I have a good way if it's the actual process then just take it slow and try to not complicate it too much (sounds dumb but that's what I did)
Like just look at what stat scales your abilities and level that stat what spells seem good or match your character and pick those don't stress over the background or alignment too much don't pick a complicated class that type of stuff hope I was at least a bit helpfull
Does anyone reckon a good way to learn would just to be throwing myself into a campaign with other people? This is how I learnt things like yugioh
It works for many. I have taught many folks this way as a life long DM
A lot of the people I've known mostly struggled with the initial hump of starting out and going forth to find a group, finding that momentum and confidence
I just don't want to overwhelm my friends during our first game, and I'm kinda scared that they will just give up before we even start, i don't want to just give them a character sheet and explain how everything works or "just pick a set number of lvl 1 spell, its your choice" and then they have to spend like 15 min looking at every one of them
becouse it can be seen as boring
Personally when doing character creation with new players I've found doing it 1 on 1 with them has the best results. If you can get them to read through the PH once or twice fully it'll help with spells and such
Thanks for letting me know 😊 I’m trying to play for free so if you know of any groups that play free and will take one more person let me know
is there like an onlike quide book where you can find information quickly if needed?
For the rules? Sure:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Yeah I get you I have the same problem kinda no one from where I'm from likes DND so when I tried to teach them some did quit but tbh Im sorry but I don't know how to make sure they don't sometimes it's about if your friends vibe with the game and are willing to put up with it but maybe if your next to them helping that might help
Sorry I can't be of more help
For complete beginners, it may be better to start with premade sheets that they can pick.
"You want to play a fighter? Here."
"You want to play a wizard? Here."
You'll find premade sheets here (scroll down for the pdfs):
https://www.dndbeyond.com/resources/1779-d-d-character-sheets
Just ask them what they want to do. Throw fire? Heal? Create sound? And then choose the spells most close to them. No one (esprcially in this times) have long attention span enough to read all of the spells
F ollow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
They are going to learn things easier when they play. Trust the process and after few session if they really want to play they are going to get better and more confident
I’ve looked into this but how do I find people who do sessions for free
If a game wants payment, it'll say in the advert. Roll20 also allows you to filter out paid games from a search.
#looking-for-players only has free games. There's a separate channel for paid ones
Sharing personal info here is against the rules, fyi
Sign up on the website, and go to Join a Game. The advanced filter will open up the options to help you find a game at a time you can make and so on.
Post in there what u are looking for

Hi
hi
Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
You may struggle to start literally today.
Note that finding a game takes time. While it's possible you might find a game that you can play tonight, it's a little unlikely. Most games tend to take a couple of days or weeks to plan before they even get started.
I found one thanks
Whats greyhawk?
A setting for D&D. Various fan wikis exist, but Wikipedia can give you a broad overview: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greyhawk
Thank you
Also, it's fully explained in the Dungeon Master's Guide.
hey i just joined the server trying to find people to play with is that a thing here?
It sure is we have #find-a-game (read them carefully)
There are no games hosted on this server, but we have LFG channels where you can find groups to play with. You'll just have to organize and schedule the game amongst yourselves. The channel link Enoki provided has more details
okay sweet thankyou
Hey, any tips on dm-ing? I really want to play online with my friends but none of us have ever played and im the one that suggested the idea, so im most likely going to be the dm. I know there are player handbooks i can read but i dont really know where to start or how to explain it to my friends without them falling asleep.
This guide is a good intro: https://howtogm.guide/
There's a whole section for DMs in the Basic Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
The first handful of videos from Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series has a bunch of pragmatic advice: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_ You don't need to watch all 100+ videos! Watch a few, absorb their content, see if you wanna keep going.
My list is here: #dm-discussion message You can also search the server for dm advice and/or dm tips. This topic comes up all the time!
If you wanna get into more depth, #dm-discussion is the channel to be in!
what does expend a psionic die mean
I find making it funny always helps a good rule of is its stupid enough to work why not try it sometimes a plot derail can be whay brings they party together especially if you notice one players kind meh geting there character to do somthing that sounds important can bring them back in 🙂
Like for a soul knife? You have a limited number of special dice (psionic dice) associated with special abilities. When you use an ability, you lose a die from the pool. So if you have 3 such dice and expend one, you have 2 remaining until you can recover the spent ones.
so expend just mean you lose one?
Yep!

Some would say they are... invisible.
Hey. I'm fine. How you doing?
Hi, if there's here a DM that accepts new players for games/campaigns, me and a friend of mine are looking to play for the first time. It would be awesome if you could make us a character each because we don't really know how to properly do it. PM me if interested
Have you tried #find-a-game ?
Yeah but idk if they all accept new players and if they can make characters for free so I just wrote it here
Well you're not gonna get games in newcomers chat, as it's not a channel for looking for groups
Generally most groups don't mind new players, and doesn't hurt to ask if you can use a pre-made character. Doesn't take much to make one

hi I'm totally new to dnd but I'm really interested in joining a group online for my first venture. I feel like most online groups prefer experienced players tho and I wish I could join a group that has enough patience for a newbie
Welcome! If you're looking for a group, you can check #looking-for-players to see what's available.
A lot of games are beginner-friendly even if they aren't explicitly advertised that way.
So if you see one you like, it can't hurt to ask!
oh cool! By the name I just guest it was mostly dm's looking for good players as opposed to newcomers
I’d be more then happy to, accept my request and I’ll go more in depth as to what I need help on
does it matter if I'm occasionally bad at spelling?
just accepted dm me on what you are looking for
Got it 👍
What's the best race for Oath of The Open Sea paladin thats available without any purchases on DND Beyond? Im really interested in this type of stuff so I'd naturally want to check this out.
Anything you think you’d like to play. Species has very little, if any, impact on class and vice versa
Its about your preference for the roleplay
Any race is viable honestly as they don't usually tend to matter past level 3 (rare exceptions), but the BEST race would probably be either fire or stone goliath in my opinion
I run homebrew with the dominate rule being that the Rule of Cool. So the math will depend on the DM
Variant human is always a safe choice they are pretty much all rounders
I imagine I'll need a fair bit of hand holding on my first dnd adventure. Is that common for most beginners?
Very common 😅 but no shame in that
yep no shame, we all started somewhere
alrighty that's a relief
I'm also open to joining in person games if offered, but that's unlikely. Considering I live in the middle of nowhere in Ol Brittania
I’m actually training a player in my server to be a DM and he’s in Britain as well
Welcome!
Thanks!
Check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel.
And welcome to the server!
im newish to dnd im just looking for a couple people to play wth
Please use the Looking For Game channels to find a group/game to play D&D with!
See #find-a-game and read it carefully as it explains how our Looking For Game channels work.
It matters when you're writing down your spells.
Once I had a player prepare the spell "frog wall"
Was the original "Fog Wall"?
Indeed it was.
I think I suggested a curse/status-effect based on malapropisms
For a separate custom system that me and some buddies made
But the idea of screwing with spells like that sounds fun too
Hiii guys!!
I have a few questions since while I now consider myself someone who understands the game more
There's a couple of stuff that I'd like help with
Ask away
Firstly, I recently discovered premade campaigns like the curse of vecna and stuff like that. Are most campaigns based off those or inspired by them, or is it just like an optional thing?
It is optional and a great way for new DMs to start and learn.
Many DMs always use them. Sing become inspired by them, and yet others never used them and find inspiration in thousands of other things
Ooh okay that's interesting, thanks man
Also
I live in a country where there isn't really an established dnd community online and I can't find anything when I research
What possible ways can I go about finding real people to play with that are experienced?
Since I'm a new player, I feel like playing with a first-time dm or mostly first-time players like myself would be like the blind leading the blind
It’s harder for me to answer that but if you have libraries or gaming stores in your area, try there. Also I have heard Reddit is a good resource and Facebook groups may be an option
I never discourage any dynamic as long as you all have fun
Ok
I messaged you😁
Alright, being new to the server and all I’m not exactly sure if there’s a channel for this but I’m looking for a dm who might need a player, I’m relatively new to dnd as a whole and I’m LVL 1 as of today, if anyone’s open feel free to shoot me a dm

hi so i was wondering if this character sheet is even decent? i have the dragonborn race on there but its supposed to be leonin as im saving up for the online race thing on dnd beyond
How do I send files if allowed?
nvm theres the link
Man I mostly just wanna find a campaign for minors or just In general accepts them but it feels impossible
There are many advertised for younger folks. you can also post your own looking for a DM and state that you need it to be under 18. Also I hear other places such as Reddit or Facebook may be helpful. Also check your local library or gaming store, you may get lucky with local places
umm what's the best class to start out as a beginner?
Any class can work, but non-magic classes are easier because you don't need to memorize a ton of spells.
Oki thanks
Guys I'm new to DnD are these good stats for an elven fighter
Hello everyone. I'm not necessarily new to the game, but I'm not experienced. I still need help discerning what types of rolls of which die for which situation lol. And I still don't understand what every stat means lol. Basically everything about the game I don't totally understand, but I understand it enough to where if I wanted to play I could, and I can hold basic conversations about it lol. I do want to get into being a dungeon master, but I don't know where to start lol.

If you DM allows crossing over between 2014 and 2024 rules then yes
<@&516370028053004306> Hi, I'm not sure how to use mod mail so I'm pinging I hope that's okay. For some reason I have a temp ban and can't make posts. Someone said they lifted it like 3 days ago but it's still here
oh sorry I totally missed the channel I'm sorry
Do not ping the moderator role unless it is an emergency that requires all moderators to respond.
Hey, I'm a new player building a character and I'm really interested in plasmoids. Would that be too complicated for a first-time player, or are they beginner-friendly? (I'm completely new, have never played the game before)
Hi, newbie here. I wanted to create a character who's half dragonborn, half human (Dragon father, Human Mother). I have no idea what the lore is—if there's even any—for mixing races. Can someone help a confused soul out, please?
No race should be non beginner friendly though some races are easier to understand than others but for your first character play whoever you want i suggest learning what plasmoids do, and you should be alright with playing a plasmoid.
Dragonborns are half dragon half human if you want more human parts than dragon than you can design and flavor your character to be like that, also you can mix races but you'd have to homebrew and check with the dm about that. In short a dragon father and human mother would create a dragon born so don't worry about mixing 2 races
Gotcha, thanks!
Your welcome
Thanks for telling me. just had to make sure. I think they would make an interesting rogue
Ooh they would bc plasmoids can fit into tight spaces like keyholes and through blockcades so pretty cool character idea
@halcyon forge thank you for the assistance earlier and for telling me about that rule I didn't catch. I appreciate it! Now I know!
can they fit through keyholes? I thought they could only fit in 1 inch gaps at max
It really depends I've had a plasmoid character ,and for certain reasons the dm let fit through a sizeable keyhole not a small one though
oh ok. I wil probably ask my DM. Now that I think about it like 35% of the game is based on your DM. Atleast from what I have seen
Hey but will say don't use it a lot I used it so I could investigate a room bc we couldn't find a way in but if you constantly ask to fit through key holes the dm might be a little annoyed but be creative with your character
I got a answer, I haven’t really learned anything about dnd. So how would I build a class and stuff? Just like the basics?
Are you talking about a homebrew class where you're creating something from scratch or are you talking about just making a character and picking from thr options you have available?
Asking again since I like getting different opinions, my party consists of a Conquest Paladin, Eloquence Bard, and Undead Warlock. What would fill the party nicely?
Anything really what class do you want to play
I feel like we’re lacking damage, so I’ve been eyeing artificer or maybe fighter.
Do you want spell casting, ranged fighting? Melee?
I’ve played rogue quite a bit so maybe something ranged or spell casting to differentiate
Then im not sure fighter is up your alley, unless you have some specific subclass in mind
Yeah I’m trying to do nothing charisma as well since we have too much charisma. Also I rolled let’s see… 8, 12, 12, 14, 16, 17.
any interest in druids?
Not particularly, don’t think it would fit the character.
What’s the character idea?
was just about to ask
Basically a Warforged who was once a soldier in a war, then raised by monks/scholars and now wants to explore the world and better it. don’t exactly want to play monk but yeah.
If you don't want to play a monk then why are you picking monk?
I’m just saying it happened backstory wise, but he himself is not a monk
maybe check out eldritch knight, the fighter subclass
Yeah that might be really cool
Would a homebrew class be making one in just what I want? Because right now I was going with rogue
Hmm true, I wanted some INT for my guy so that might be cool. I’ll think about it
i mean, if you want int, you can never go wrong with a wizard as well, but other than that i think eldritch will treat you well
A martial. I'd consider fighter.
The spellcasting/control is covered by bard and warlock.
The face is the bard, obviously.
Paladin is a good tank, but squishy party otherwise. So bring some heavy metal or hit points
And I think fighters are just better both for fun and gameplay than barbs so I say fighter.
like, how you find people to play with?
yea
well there are many ways, there is channel #find-a-game that should help you, and you can look for a group on roll 20 site for example, thats where i got my first group
ok I'll try that
good luck
okay so i wanna create my first ever character, but there's a dilemma.. i have no idea how to make the sheet of my character, like do i go on some sort of site and it helps me auto complete some of that stuff or do i have to go through the whole ability stuff and such and read through
D&DBeyond has a digital character builder that takes some of the load off your shoulders:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
Of course, you can always fill out the sheet yourself:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/br/ph/character-sheet.pdf
In either case, reading the basic rules is recommended:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
thanks! i'll also read up the rules and then go to a local place to get a dm i had the other day and play

hi. I'm new to dnd and I know almost nothing about it. I've seen a few videos on yt about the rules etc, but I haven't played at all yet, so could someone please explain the rules to me and how to fill out that paper that has your character's information? also if someone is missing a player and wouldn't mind a newbie, I'd be happy if you could tell me. thank you
Homebrewing a class would essentially making every aspect of a class from scratch- and most dms probably wouldn't allow it given how hard it is to do that and have it be balanced. Sounds like you're asking how to build a character. There's a lot that can go into it but the four major pillars are this- selecting your race, which is who you are, your class, which is what you do, your stats, which is what you're good or bad at, and your background which is what you did before the game started.

Best way to learn the rules is to read the Basic Rules that are free through the link above. You don't need to memorize them. They give you a basic understanding that you can refer back to later.
To fill out sheet, just go step by step through the character creation chapter linked below for convenience.

Thanks :)
Hi I'm new to dnd, wanted to try it after Baldur's Gate 3, had a lot of fun with it though I don't know how similar it is to actual DnD
Hi, I'm semi-new to this channel and I want to learn; Im primarily on mobile and use D&D Beyond. My main class (currently, may change) is Necromancer/Wizard and my favorite race* (*Currently) is Plasmoid's (AKA Slime People 🙂
Though I will admit: I'm a generalist above all things so I can play anything
(Note that I will not combine these 2 mainly because Plasmoid's are better for Monks, Barbarian and Rouge classes rather than Wizard)
Bg3 is pretty similar to dnd (specifically the 2014 version of 5th edition dnd which it's based on.) A few changes have been made to suit it's nature as a video game- several feats were adjusted several spells had ranges altered, respeccing is an option, etc. There's a full list of difference here, ( https://bg3.wiki/wiki/D%26D_5e_rule_changes ) but in most cases things work close enough to be directly comparable
I know several friends who got really into bg3, got into dnd from that and have had a great time, hope you find it just as enjoyable as well!
Thanks, looking forward to my first session
Question: I want to create my 1st DND character (I use DnD beyond, See Above^ for my introduction)
what is your question
My schedule with work and life is a lil chaotic evil , but I’m really itching to play. Any advice for finding last minute one shots ?
Plasmoid is actually suitable for any class. Your choice of species has very little, if any, mechanical impact on your choice of class and vice versa
which it used to have bigger impact and i miss that
As for creating your first character, have you checked out the free Basic Rules yet? They go over how the game works and how to create a character in the first two sections
follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for. but not likely to have too much finding one that quick
Getting into any D&D session last minute is difficult, one-shot or not. You could just patrol #looking-for-players , but if you wanted to maximize your searching capabilities try looking at:
- Other D&D / TTRPG discord servers
- D&D / TTRPG social media groups & forums (e.g. D&DBeyond forums, Reddit’s r/lfg)
- Local businesses (e.g. libraries, local game stores)
- School clubs (if you’re in school/uni)
Look for pick-up games on Roll20, or join community servers on Discord.
Thanks everyone !
I have this urge to play like never before
and it doesn’t help that my freaking tiktok reminds me of it every 5 minutes like 💔
Hi, I'm new on this server and new to DnD. I really would like to give it a try, but I am struggling a bit. I'm too shy to just throw my questions in any chat or to launch into a game and see where I land. Plus I'm getting overwhelmed by all the rules and everything there is to read and see. I wonder if any of you feels like mentoring a newbie, preferably through dm. Feel free to send me a message whenever you have time. Thanks!
Start with putting together a character. Class, species, background. Go with what sounds cool. Use the standard array method for ability scores.
Once you have a character, you can start to look at the rules that you'll need to know about.
Thank you. See, here's the problem a bit. Going with whatever isn't really my style; I need a bit more guidance. Also: look at the rules you'll need to know about... I don't know what I need to know about... The guidelines here say: I know it's a lot but you don't need to know everything. It probably doesn't help that I'm autistic lol
So when you look at https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes you'll see there's a short description of each. Start with those.
Alternatively, suggest what kind of gameplay you'd like your character to be good at: physical combat or spellcasting, ranged or melee, specialist or generalist, that kind of thing.
If you want i can help you make a character
I have made a character on DnD Beyond. It's is finished, I think. But I don't really know what to do now.
I have the basic rules on DND Beyond, I'll check it out
Just find ye a game and hop in and have fun
Here are some terms to have a look at:
Ability check, attack roll, saving throw, hit dice, hit points, DC, AC, class level, spell level, spell slots.
Meanwhile, if you set your DDB sheet to public visibility, you can get a sharing link and we can give it a once-over.
Hmm creating a character in DND Beyond seems very complicated, and I've fully completed Incrementals!
It can be, but the Basic Rules take you through it step by step. Imo most newbies get the most stuck at the first page of the character creator. The secret is that the first page is skippable for a first-timer, since it’s essentially just a bunch of content toggles that will be DM-dependent.
Of course, if you have any specific questions about creating a character feel free to ask
What's the usual Advancement type for a campaign?
Entirely dependent on DM.
As before I suggest just skipping to the next page of the character creator
What are the best Skill Proficiency's for a Necromancer?
I'm guessing Arcane and Religion?
Both are nice
I suggest thinking of what’s best given your available options and what fits your character’s history and personality
It depends on the nec you want
So I made a Necromancer with a History skill, Intelligence Option with Guidance, Resistance and Command; is this good
Annoying swarmer
Or if that isn't available: a zoner swarmer
I would assume 5e since they’re using D&DBeyond
Personally I recommend taking at least 1 offensive and 1 defensive option for every spell level you have access to
In any case it seems you’re missing a few skills and spells? I’m assuming you took a background that gives you Magic Initiate (Cleric or Druid) considering you took Guidance as a cantrip.
In that case, you should have:
- 4 proficiencies not including any from your choice of species (2 from Wizard, 2 from Background)
- 3 cantrips
- 6 level 1 Wizard spells of which 4 are prepared
So it seems you are missing 5 level 1 Wizard spells and 2 Wizard cantrips
I'm new to DnD.....I came here for one specific question.....is there anyway a Pale Master could track an undead?
To find them?
What do you mean by Pale Master? I looked it up and found a third party class, in which case you should check the #third-party channel.
Pale master isn't a general DnD class?
No
Are you sure? I mean 3e
I'm not familiar with 3e so I can't help here
They removed Pale Master from newer editions? O.o insanity
I see.....yeah all I know is 3e and 3.5e...the little I do know of DnD
Hi all!
I’m completely new to the server and the game d&d
Can someone tell me how to get started? It look so difficult
Okay now I'm confused: I picked up Wizard for the necromancer school, I'm now in "Choose Origin: Background", what background do I pick?
I guess we have to send an application to looking-for-players but i can't find where that section is. Can somone send an ss of that place?
I’ve found that section. But I can’t do anything within the channel
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Whatever has an appropriate background given your character’s history and personality, just like with proficiencies. I recommend taking one that has the necessary ability score increases for Wizards, such as Acolyte. I assumed you already picked a background since you said you had Guidance as a cantrip
Hmm what's the best legacy for a Necromancer? Abyssal, Cthonic or Infernal? (I chose Tiefling as my race)
Again whatever you prefer. Species has very little impact if any on class & subclass
I clicked on looking for players but turns out its a dm application now it says i have to wait till 20th July to fill a new form
I dont get where we have to click
It seems you may have ran the command to make a post in #looking-for-players instead of #looking-for-dm . I suggest contacting #moderator-support
is there something I need to do to be able look for a dm in the channel? Right now it says I don't have permission to send messages in the channels.
No one can type in those channels. #find-a-game explains how to make a post there
oh ok thanks dawg
I don’t recall the Pale Master having any kind of ability or spell to do that. Sorry.
@wheat crystal hey so how do I determine ability scores? Just do rolls?
There are 3 methods as outlined in the basic rules, Point Buy, Standard Array, and Rolling
I suggest using Point Buy or Standard Array
Rolling is almost exclusively done under the supervision of your DM since its a big cheating risk
Hi !
Not new, DMed a bit, played a lot, from Europe, here to see what's up and maybe ask some questions sometimes when they come up 🙂
Welcome!
Alr I'm guessing I should focus on Intelligence, Wisdom and Constitution?
Pretty much. The only stats a typical Wizard doesn’t need is Charisma and Strength
I'd say Intelligence, Dexterity and Constitution. You mostly need to survive to stuff more than notice stuff.
Hello hello!
I'm kinda new. Well I played few times and I DMed but I'm not the best with the roles so I am going to ask questions if I get too confused
Any idea where I pick my school in DnD beyond? I can't seem to find it
Wisdom isn’t just noticing stuff, it also fortifies your character against Wisdom saving throws which are both common and often have debilitating effects (e.g. Charm)
School ? Of magic ?
Nvm
Necromancer
As per the Wizard class table, you get your subclass at level 3 as with every other class
Spells have those, and specialties like that are subclasses, coming at level 3 mostly.
Depends on the game you're supposed to play in.
Oh, you have to be level 3, but Necromancer comes from the 2014 books, you either have to purchase that book to see it or be in a campaign where someone is sharing it with you.
Level 1 unless your DM says otherwise
Alr thanks
I recently designed a level 11 one-shot and usually introduce people to the game with level 4 characters, but it's not standard.
Alr I'm finished with my character
Feel free to share it here or in #character-discussion for feedback if you’d like it, otherwise if you wanted to go straight into group finding check out #find-a-game
Don't know if this is how you share it but here: www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/jb1416698_149237309.pdf
Hmm this seems to be off by a bit
Heyy im new but im not new my friends played a few times but it was custom…so uhhh idk anything basically
Ok looking over your sheet I noticed the following things:
- It seems you’ve chosen the old version of Tiefling from 2014 as well as the 2014 version of the Sage background. I suggest updating these to the 2024 versions unless your DM allows you to use 2014 content. This is also because 2024 species don’t get the Ability Score Increase (the Background does), and 2024 Backgrounds come with a feat.
- You’re missing all of your spells given by your Wizard class.
- You’re missing your equipment from your class. I believe you took the gold option but make sure you actually buy your starting equipment. You can probably skip some stuff but at the very least get a spell focus or component pouch which you need to cast spells. As a Wizard you also have the option of making your Spellbook your focus so make sure to add it to your inventory.
- Your character seems to be 8 feet tall? That’s quite above the average for Tieflings let alone any character (except for Goliaths & Orcs), so just make sure your DM is ok with playing such a tall character. There aren’t really any mechanical issues with doing so, it’s just outside the norm.
- Your character seems to be Chaotic Evil. Definitely make sure to check in with your table & DM if you’d want to play an Evil alignment, they’re definitely the hardest to play given the collaborative, heroic fantasy the game typically appeals to.
Me sweating from reading this paragraph alone
Welcome! I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help
Alr how do I update it?
You might have accidentally enabled legacy content on the first page of the character builder. I would toggle it off first, then make sure you choose the 2024 options of the Tiefling species and Sage background
Ah wait
It seems only your Sage background is outdated, not your species
In any case, to ensure the Background is the right version the 2024 Sage Background should include everything here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#Sage
Wrong one
hello
I´m new to dnd and I just want to ask if there is any groups that are open for a new player
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Okay so I think this is the correct one
Don't know if I need that many can trips/lvl1 spells but I dont know those restrictions yet
It's been a long time since I've played dnd
You’re still missing spells. As a level 1 Wizard, per your class page you should have:
- 3 Wizard cantrips
- 6 level 1 Wizard spells, 4 of which are prepared
These numbers don’t include any you get from your species or background feat
Ok thanks
Given what your sheet says, you still need 2 more Wizard cantrips and 4 more level 1 Wizard spells
I would say technically 3 cantrips, since you’ve taken Chill Touch twice so I’d replace one of them
Wizards has basically 3 sets of spells.
- your entire possible spell list
- your spellbook which is a subset of your entire list which determines what spells you can prepare
- your prepared spells list which is a subset of your spellbook, which is the ones you can cast in game.
They are saying the spellbook list is missing some. (The middle list)
Can anyone help me find a good campaign with npc's and maps already made? Just asking just in case i cant find a dm
(Plus Cantrips which are just always prepared once you select them and don't go in your book)
If you mean to run, I.e., you are the DM, if you just need the text, purchasing on Beyond makes sense. If you want maps and all, you will want to purchase on Roll20 or similar Virtual Tabletops. If you plan to run in person, maps are harder to get and you should expect to have to sketch them on something or find a way to print them large enough.
alright
@wheat crystal K I got my
Cantrips: Chill Touch, Mage Hand, Ray of Frost
1st Level Spells (All): False Life, Find Familiar, Identify, Mage Armor, Ray of Sickness, Shield
(Prepared ones are: False Life, Find Familiar, Mage Armour and Ray of Sickness)
Is there any spell I should change or prepare instead of these?
wsg
Shield is rather valuable for Wizards as their Armour Class is often not high. Whether you take it now or later, my higher level Wizards always have Absorb Elements prepared.
how do I join a game, fr just want to play some D&D with my many OCs
Find Familiar can be cast as a Ritual for 1h 10 minutes instead of 1 hour so it often is not worth preparing. One advantage of Wizard is you can cast Rituals without preparing them if you spend 10 extra minutes.
Please read #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels
As per your Magic Initiate feat you should get 2 extra Wizard Cantrips and 1 extra 1st level spell. Given you’re a tiefling your total should be:
- 6 cantrips (3 from class, 2 from background feat, 1 from tiefling)
- 7 level 1 spells (6 from class, 1 from background feat)
thanks
It won't let me learn any more Cantrips
I'm using DnD Beyond
Ah NVM I think I found it:
"Fiendish Legacy Spells: Fire Bolt"
I have the Thaumaturgy cantrip from my otherworldly presence
I just saw I have 2 Chill Touch and 2 Ray of Frost; lemme change that
@wheat crystal what should I change the extra Chill Touch and extra Ray of Frost into?
Whatever you prefer. What do you think your character would know?
Hmm what are the most annoying ones?
@teal temple what are the most annoying Cantrips I have access to?
hey all im new comer to dnd so i just came here to ask how to join a campaigne i checked the thing but its a lil confusing

Feel free to ask any specific questions as you're learning
@wheat crystal for some reason I have 7 Cantrips and 5 lvl 1 spells; any reason for that?
Ah, my traits and Absorb Elements
Alr I think I'm done; anyone wanna see my spells?
Hey so I'm kinda like brand new to dming, where can I learn?
Hi again 🙂
Is there any game I can join as a player?
I usually use DnD Beyond (I'm on mobile)
Go to #find-a-game
Already did, pretty sure that #looking-for-dm and #looking-for-players is full
Well I think
I made a post looking for a game to join and nobody texted me lol but if u find a text only game with a slot available for me too could u tell me?
There should be some text games available in #looking-for-players #looking-for-community @open forge
Most of them are Westmarch though
Westmarch is where there is a game going on in a particular area of Farun and they play by text
First message in the discord and a very new player to the game. I've made my character on D&D beyond and run a few, admittedly really cool, solo one shots with chatgpt.
Is Chatgpt a good place to learn the game or should I be focusing on trying to find a group?
Well im not sure how well chatgpt follows actual rules, i have used it to help me out with some stuff in the past but i always facts checked it, you should definitely look for a group even if chatgpt does a good job at it, there are many beginner friendly groups so i doubt that will be a struggle
That's fair but I have my suspicions that it follows the rules very well as my games there often started great but would quickly turn into a narrative heavy story rather than a typical game.
I'll try looking for a group, thanks 🙂
Anytime
ChatGPT is not a good way to learn the game. Given the nature of LLMs, it can and will get rules wrong especially in ways that aren't immediately obvious. If you'd like to learn the game more in supplement of reading the free Basic Rules &/or learning with a group, I suggest:
- Trying the interactive demo found in #learn-to-play
- Using video supplements like Handbooker Helper by Critical Role
You might also consider trying out the video game Baldur's Gate 3, which uses a system heavily based on the 2014 5e ruleset. Keep in mind with this option there many changes made to adapt 5e to a video game format, so while it won't teach you D&D it will largely familiarize you with its important concepts.
I'd have to check your sheet in order to do that, though your sheet should list the source for any given spell.
Already fixed it, sorry I didn't inform you sooner
Thank you for the info!
got a question, anything I need to know when playing a Cleric>:?
in what sense?
generally
i mean not really i dont think, having a designated deity is cool so have a talk with your dm about how that will come into play, nothing else really comes to mind
Be aware of your spells, what they need and what they do. Maybe make yourself a list or guide to keep track.
noted, thanks
the most complex thing about cleric is their spell list, yeah, and you can switch it up every long rest so its good to know what spells are avaliable and what they can do
I find I need a reminder of which are concentration spells before I start throwing hands, myself.
As I have said many times in here before that most of the servers that advertise are beginners friendly and will be happy to help you out with DnD
Hello! im looking to learn more and meet new friends in this space, how are you?
Anyone got any recommendations for how to begin world building for a homebrew DnD world and campaign? Never been a dm before but we have quite a backlog of modules to do so I want to work on this in the background
Guys, anyone got tips for a newcomer dm?, im starting to plan out a small map for a campaign i had an idea for. If anyone has any suggestions for the actual campaign or curious on progress, feel free to dm me
- build what you need
- sketch the rest, leave space to explore
- Five Room Dungeon
- Sly Flourish's Lazy DM advice
Three linked adventures, even if they're one session each, is a campaign.
The above might be helpful to you too.
Maybe, you wanna see my map so far?
You could post it in #dnd-maps
For this part, see below ..".. anyone got tips for a new DM .."
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.

Thats definitely helpful, slightly overwhelming but very helpful aswell, thanks man : D
One thing i can tell you as a long time DM... DMing is more an art than a science. There isn't a right way to do it or only one way to do it. It's you bringing you to the collaborative story and your experiences and what you bring is going to inevitably be different and so should your DMing. My favourite advice to new DMs is DM your way, not how someone else does.
Thats, actually some very good advice : D
Ive always been more of a hyperactive thinker, and then a friend of mine told me about dnd
now i realize i can turn my ideas into an entire world
good to know there isnt a specific set of insanely complicated, strict, traditional rules i gotta follow : D
I hope…
The tricky part sometimes is not getting stuck on building that whole world at once. The completionist in me always likes to but it helps to say, this is all I need to run the session and sort the rest out later.
oh, i’ll keep that in mind
thats a bit too late though…
its finnee i can save my current campaign idea for later
Maybe…
Players will blind side you anyway with stuff you didn't think of. Sometimes you just make the call and jot a note if you want to expand that lore later.
Ooo, that might be fun
btw, i know its prolly alot to ask but
Wanna hear my plan so far?
I think ima just leave it as i have it rn
Atleast for my first campaign
Cannot right now but you should be good. If you have worked on broad level ideas, you want to come up with what you will present, even at a loose level, so that the characters can interact with the world.
Example, the broader world might have a dragon terrorizing locals and destroying things, but the players interaction with it might start further down the trade cycle when they discover that in their area, they discover the local farmers cannot get water and grain and need the PCs to help.
Thats, actually way better than what my friend was trying to tell me XD
Thx man
I think im gonna go either start some entry dialogue, or find somebody to check my ideas
But thank you, you’ve been more helpful than you can imagine
Hope it goes well and welcome to DMing! ❤️ 🥳
Friend me, we can chat later, and thank you, im happy to be a part of the community : D🥳🎉🎊
anyone have tips for a person wanting to start playing dnd?? i haven’t got a group but i’m gonna check if my local game store knows any groups 💕
I'm like a month in, still new tho. From what I can tell, start simple. . . I guess?
i dont have anyone either most of the dms i seen have complete different time schdules or do it on days that dont work

Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Don't be put off by timezones. Your morning might be someone else's evening. The only part that matters is when you're both available.
thank you so much!! 𐔌՞. .՞𐦯
Do you guys know where i can try to find a party?, im a begginer dm, i just wanna know for when i have some basics down for a nice campaign layout
Check the lfg link in the box a few messages above for how finding a group works on this discord.
If you're lookig for more general advice on group finding, I can recommend iamrazorwings unoffical guide:

Ohhh, didnt realise “lfg” was looking for group
That makes this so much easier, thank you
How many players do you think is the best for my first campaign?
I was thinking 3, but im not sure
3-4 is probably a good start
Nice
alr, so i set aside my idea with the paper map and decided to find a map maker
i made a pretty nice starting country
named it "del oro" based off of the high amoutns of gold
and i have a relative idea of how im going to theme the campaign
hey so me and my friend are trying to play dnd in table top simulator and we're don't know which edition's rule should we follow (We're ALL never played before and i do watch some shorts and stuff like that in youtube and twitch so im about to be the dm for the group)
5e is the current edition so likely the easiest to find materials for. Here's the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
thx
Do anyone know which workshop we need to dowload for playing dnd in tabletop simulator?
Someone in #third-party might know.

Hello all just joined today
Welcome. Feel free to ask questions
Hi
I'm somewhat experienced been playing since addition 2. Took a break for a while and now I'm trying to look for groups to start getting back into it. Not really up to date on what's going on with the new additions.
Also did a round with d&d beyond but that gets a bit expensive at times
It isnt' bad if you are just a player in a decent group the book share can help keep cost down.
Okay I'll look into that thanks
hi im new
Welcome, Let us know if you have any questions

I am a fairly new member to D&D a few years back I played for about a month had a super good time playing then we broke apart
now I am looking for a new GM for adult company who would like dm for us
some of us are disability and have learning disabilities so we would need some very patient and kind to help us
Hi there. Glad to hear you had a good time playing until the split. Unfortunately that happens.
We do have channels to help connect players to dms

Hey so quick question, i've got a dnd campaign that i want to post on "looking for players" but it says that i dont have access to it, but i am actively looking for atleast one or two players for my campaign, is it possible to just write a description of it here and let people contact me or should i try to get permission to post there instead?
follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and it should work
Hi there. We don't allow group formation or solicitation outside the lf channels.
No one can type in the looking for channels as it uses a bot/template.
You can type the commands for the bot in any channel you can type in and it will post in the correct channel based on the command used
oooh okay cool, thanks!
hello im new, what do i do here

Hey everyone!
I’m new to D&D and looking to join a campaign. My character is a Half-Elf Paladin, and my username is ShotzMontana1 on D&D Beyond.
I’m available on weekdays and some Fridays, and I’m flexible — we can talk more about the time if you’re interested in playing together. I’m open to roleplay, learning as I go, and having fun with a group.
Let me know if you have space for one more adventurer — I’d love to join your party!
Thanks,
ShotzMontana1

The looking for games channels are the proper place to find groups. Follow the instructions for how to properly set up posts
Sorry I didn’t mean too
Hi, I'm completely new to D&D. Looking forward to learning more about it
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.

I'm relatively new. What are some good solo-playing experiences for DND?
I would recommend finding a group of players instead. Solo play is nothing like actual D&D.
D&D is not built for solo at all. It is meant for a min of two players and an dungeon master aka story teller
Really not trying to be rude but that's not what I asked. I asked what good options exist for solo playing experiences for DND.
It SEEMS like solo adventurer's toolbox is the most popular thing but if anyone has suggestions for solo dnd lmk
Like stuff that is similar to d&d?
no, just solo DND. It seems like the only way you can do it is with an Oracle but I'd have to test it out to see if it even functions all that well
I've been looking for players for a week straight. Not very successful. It's because I'm trying to play something relatively niche I guess.
I'm trying to find someone that wants to worldbuild as we DM for each other so that we can build up a really big world over a long time. Really tough to find people to do that with
You can do that without coDMing. I’ve heard of groups where the players and DMs cocreate the setting together. I’m planning on doing something similar when my Descent Into Avernus group gets out of hell.
And that sort of worldbuilding will come pretty naturally from a long D&D game.
yeah but that requires 3+ people on the same page and if I can't find even one other person then I'll never find that lol
plus scheduling gets tough with more and more people
scheduling is easiest with 1 other person
Welcome to D&D.
exactly
doesn't mean I'm going to stop trying to find my ideal way to play it
I'll find someone eventually lmao
Good luck.
Honestly, my first recommendation would be Baldur’s Gate III.
played it. It was alr
Hello
Can I take over the abyss
Just steal the amulets of all the known demonlords and use their army's to conquer other layers
Unify the abyss (Impossible I know)
