The DM may grant you inspiration if your character does something heroic or especially cool, and some game features may also grant it (for example, humans get one inspiration per day).
How do I know what's the stats and everything else that a race can do or receive?
All the statistics and abilities that a species gets are listed in the species information
For example, all of the traits that you get as a Halfling are listed above.
So I have the physical PHB for 2024, but I was wondering how much easier it is to use dnd beyond for character creation? Right now I’m in a 2014 campaign and thankfully someone had it bought on dnd beyond and was willing to let me see the different feats, otherwise I wouldn’t have known the differences.
But at the same time, I feel like 2024 games will start to be the more common version played?
Statistically yes, 2024 games will become more and more common over time.
As for whether DnD Beyond is easier, that's really a matter of preference for both you and the table you're playing with.
I love the feel of the physical PHB and I want to use it as much as possible - but it’s definitely a bit of a learning curve compared to plug and play with drop downs lol
I personally find DDB works better for me and the tables I play with.
Just note that the physical PH does not add any character creation options or access to the book in to D&D Beyond. For that, you need to buy the digital version or have some nice friend who did buy it share it with you. Alternatively, you can embark on the learning curve of DDB's homebrew system and manually enter the information for your personal use.
Someone knows a good app or site to play with friends? Preferably free(if possible).
Technically, all of DnD can be played for free. The free rules have all the information you need to play, and after that, all you need are some friends and some way to keep track of dice rolls
Can I use some kinda of bot on Discord to do It?
In a pinch you can even use Google. Typing Roll d20 in to Google will pull up a basic dice roller.
Thanks
But yes there plenty of dice bots on discord to
Dice maiden is a simple one
#ddb-avrae-commands is more complicated
Hello, I hope this is the right channel. I already played a few oneshots and I hope to get more information here. I tried looking for info about Artificer class and Archfey race, but I couldn't find any youtube videos that covered those in "all dnd classes" and "all dnd races." But people in my group were able to play them? I know the DM didn't get the 2024 PH, so where did they come from? Thank you for any guidance
Welcome! The Artificer class comes from the book Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
As for the Archfey race...? That's not a species available for players. You might be confusing it with the Archfey subclass for Warlock, which is available in the new Player's Handbook.
Oh no. Subclasses?
Thank you for the welcome
Subclasses are a kind of specialization that a character can pick (usually) at level 3.
I'm looking at my Archfey-Warlock character sheet, where do I find the race? Or do warlocks not have a race...? I can't find it
I created this a long time ago.
A character's race is entirely separate from their class.
A character is made up of three main components:
- Race
- Background
- Class
Since it sounds like you're using the 2014 rule set, you can find a list of free races here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/races#ChoosingaRace
I think I figured it out. I mistook eladrin for eldritch. And all the youtube videos I watched used Elves instead of Eladrin. I hope I got that right
Eladrin is a race, yes.
They are related to Elves, but don't have the same race traits that Elves do.
I see. Thank you for clearing up my confusion! I think I know where to go from here now
What exactly do you mean by that?
Can I use the race of a specific game? Let's say I want to be a Nord from a game called Skyrim. Is that applicable to my character?
That’s something you’d have to ask your DM.
My apologies
Nah, you’re good!
It’s just that the DM has final say in what is or isn’t allowed.
Some DMs might want you to stick with the official options.
Some might already have made a game world and not included anything like Nords.
Ah okayy I see, thank you so much for explaining to me
Some might honestly love helping you put together your own unique character options.
It just really depends.
I haven't started a single campaign yet, and I don't know where I should begin..
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some good info to help you get started, but what part has you confused specifically?
I’d generally recommend reading through chapter one and the Rules Glossary in the Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
And then coming up with a few loose ideas for characters.
What do u need to play
Well I understand nothing in general
- The Basic Rules, linked above
- A set of dice, either physical or digital
- People to play with and a way to communicate with them
Ok
thank you so muchhh, you've been really helpful :D
Adding a nord in would be called homebrew
Just out of interest what would you want from a nord character, I could potentially help make it balanced
I wouldn't recommend homebrew to a brand new player, even under the pretense of it being 'balanced'. Using homebrew content tends to make it pretty difficult to get into some games, after all.
Ik
I just would like to help make a race for them incase they find a game that allows it
Wait whats a homebrew?
Like the the stats?
Homebrew is anything that's made up by players, rather than official content
Ohh I see, i thought it was a race similar to Nords
Like what would they be able to do
For example, Elf, Dwarf, and Human are official species available to players. If you wanted to play as a Sasquatch, for example, there's no written content for that. You'll have to make it up, which is called Homebrew. Homebrew is tough to balance, especially for new players, and not many DMs are willing to accept homebrew ideas from players that don't have a lot of experience under their belt.
In skyrim, Nords would be able to cast Fire and Lightning magic, and also have a battle cry that makes enemies flee for 30 seconds
Okay i see, thank you so much for telling me all this, it means a lot !!
None of these abilities sound like Species traits, and sound more like they're related to your Class. Every character is made up of three main parts:
- Species
- Background
- Class
It all varies depending on the DM but I agree
I'd stick with official content until you get a hang of what parts of a character contribute to your abilities
They're also 50% resistant to the cold at least
Okayyy

If you'd like to look at a list of the free official species available, click the link to the Free Rules above
See that'd be cool but say you're in a hellfire landscape and cold doesn't really exist in this landscape, its the type of thing you prep in game 0
So part of the character could be a resistance to cold damage
Also a ability that allows you to temporarily scare characters seems cool
Add the basic +1 to one score and +2 to another and u could play them
And if u go for a spellcaster as your class u could also have the fire and ice attacks
Alrighty, i'll try to read more into that, thanks for the help :D
Makes sense, so a homebrew is just for some specific campaigns then?
Check out the Goliath species in particular. I bet it's right up your alley!
Campaign and DM discretion
Yeah the dm has to decide if they want it
Oooo, okayy I'll add that to my character's notes for when i get a chance to use him one day
Glad I could help
Im reading abt it rn and yeahh, sounds some bit similar to the Nord race i was talkin about earlier !!
Think of homebrew as adding extra rules onto an already pre-existing game. If someone you know came up to you and said "Wanna play Monopoly, but I've added a bunch of new rules to it", you might say yes if you know that person well, and if you know they're good at making stuff up.
But if they're a stranger, or if they've never even played monopoly before, you might probably say no
Similarly, if you haven't played DnD before, don't worry about trying to homebrew stuff. Get some experience under your belt first.
This is some rlly great advice, tysm for helping me—I was so confused with the whole character customization
Yeah so for an example with me when I started playing i didnt know homebrew existed i was playing base class and race but the longer I played the more creative i got and thought of whole homebrew ideas for different campaigns and it took me months sometimes years to be able to use them in the right campaign and some i still haven't used but then again once a dm always a dm
So I know a bit about dnd Ive played two campaigns in my highschools dnd club but I have no clue how to actually play or set up a character or level up or any of the technical stuff. I wanna join a campaign but I dont wanna drag everyone down by my lack of knowledge. So my question is: what is the best way to quickly do all of the technical stuff without me spending hours and getting confused?

Welcome! The best place to start is with the Free Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Unfortunately, DnD is a pretty big game and does require some time spent learning the basics.
Luckily, there's lots of people happy to answer questions!
Helloooo
So I’m very very new to this
Ive watched a bit of critical role and I played a tiny bit a few years ago.
At the moment I’m looking for a group that would kinda just let me sit in on their game and watch as I don’t fully have a grasp on playing yet and I don’t want to drag anyone’s campaign down.
Where would be the best place for me to look for groups that might help with this?
You can follow the #find-a-game steps to find games posted to ask.
But I'll warn you now, I don't think you're very likely to find any groups that might be willing to do that.
If you just want to watch a game, there's tons of options on YouTube and Twitch.
And those are all from groups that are already inviting people to watch.
Honestly your best bet is probably to keep reading through the rules yourself and continuing to watch live play videos, if that's what got you interested in the first place. As you read, you'll start to see how those rules are used in real time.
You could find a few of them listed in #dnd-advertisements.
Alright

Hi
If I’m a rogue and have two daggers and a short bow, can I dual wield my daggers? Or do I have to take the dual wielder feat?
2014 edition
Or if I have a short sword and a dagger
You can use two daggers or a short sword and a dagger since those are all light weapons. However, whichever you attack with using your bonus action won't get the additional damage from your modifier.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#TwoWeaponFighting
heyy so ive playing dnd for a while with this group and i kinda still dont know what spell slots do, could someone explain the purpose to me pls
So I would use my bonus action as a rogue to attack with my offhand dagger, but then be unable to disengage or move away after attacking? Or am I misinterpreting bonus actions?
Basically, spell slots are the number of castings you have for spells of that level. So with two level 1 spell slots, you can cast two level 1 spells, either the same spell twice or two different spells.
Correct. You generally have one bonus action, and once you spend it attacking per the above rule, you can't use it to do something else requiring a bonus action.
So, when using dnd beyond, when it comes to the ability scores should i use the Point Buy thing? Also the whole proficiency bonus thing, im assuming that for fighter its Strength and Dexterity?
usually, your DM tells you how to make stats. if you dont have one yet, point buy is probably your safest option for now
proficiency bonus gets applied to a lot of things. it tells you in the class description what things you are proficient in. like weapons, saving throws, skills
I recently acquired the player handbook and am interested in finding a group. I currently live in Orlando, FL(near Universal) and am typically available to play on most weekdays from 7 to 9PM my time, except Fridays for FNM and Sundays. I wouldn't mind playing one-shots, to get my feet wet and figure out if I vibe well with the group, before committing to a campaign.
were you wanting to try out irl or online games?
id be down for either
ah fair fair, I'd recommend checking out the #looking-for-players channel after reading over the #find-a-game if you wanted to play online, if you wanted to do an irl one i'd recommend checking out reddit groups/facebook groups and gameshops in your area that run dnd
I did look around for game shops near me, but ill check the #lfp. tyvm.
I also suggest Nextdoor app of u had it. I found 2 of 5 of my local players that way
hey im looking ti play at a game shop near me is there anything i need to know about the campaign before i make my character or can i just make one?
If you know who the DM will be for that game, I'd suggest contacting them and find out what the parameters are for character creation. If not, then maybe have a character ready to go but be prepared to adjust it to meet the game requirements.
awesome thank you do you play any video games perchance your name looks familiar to somthing i saw earlier today but i cant tell lol
Heh. Not much of a video game player myself. My Discord name is more of a joke about my video game abilities lol.
I'm more like DyingNoob
lol yeah i thought it woulda been funny if i did see you earlier thanks for the help!
does anyone have any good websites/sheets for making characters with stuff from the extra books? i dont have any of the books but i still want to make characters with stuff not from the free stuff in dnd beyond
The only thing you'd be able to access is the free rules and SRD materials - evrything else requires buying the book.
Currently you can use Roll20, Foundry VTT, Fantasy Grounds, and DnDBeyond to create a digital character sheet.
You can also download the PDF character sheet and fill it in yourself: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a D&D Beyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond (Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way; it is for personal use only)
How does AC work
To attempt to hit something with an attack, one rolls a 20-sided die and adds modifiers. The result has to equal or exceed the Armour Class (AC) of the target to successfully hit the target.
Thank you brother
if your looking for paid games then idk, but if your looking for non paid games people shouldnt be messaging you for payment
Am I ok to look for players here?
I just made a campaign based off of some DND games and anime I saw and made a bunch of things for the game and don't know where to find players #looking-for-players
Use #find-a-game to post in #looking-for-players
hi. i wanna create a character
@bluejaythequeen you wanna join?
join what?
My campaign? Idk if you were talking to me lol
Please keep campaign formation to our looking-for channels. Recruiting or soliciting in our other channels is generally not allowed. 🙂
Sorry
theres plenty of ways to create a character online
most people end up using dnd beyond if you want to give that a look
@fdm thanks
What’s the most damage I could do with a barbarian at lvl 1 with average rolls
Assuming you're using a Greataxe and raging, you're expected to do around 8-9 damage every time you hit.
Now if you're using 2024 rules, you can hit a second target with your Greataxe.
And if you're using Greatsword and miss, you can still do damage equal to your Strength modifier
how do people here generally find a game to join? has anyone had any luck with that esp. as a relatively new player? ive played in the past but im very rusty so i dont wanna slow anyone down :0 what should i do to make sure i know all the basics
Beats me. I've already made 7 characters and have yet to find a game lmao
I've wanted to play for a while, but I've had no luck. So, I decided to DM for my family. I've made some rad characters with my two kids (7 and 8), and I'm hoping we can figure it out together. Ideally, I want to be a player, but 'tis better than nothin!
All my friends are either already in a game or not interested :p
Hey, I’m brand new to the game. Never played. I want to join a game and learn, does anyone know how I join or what do I do
Be flexible and fair and ready to adapt the game as you learn more as to how you want to run the game. Just remember, the Dungeon Master has a lot of influence, but D&D is a form of collaborative storytelling. On top of speaking, always be listening to your players. I've thrown out whole prepared storylines to go somewhere the players are interesting in exploring.
Hii!
I'm pretty new to the realm of dbd but I've always been interested but if I'm honest I have no idea where to start
I haven't made a character either I mean like my closest experience I had with dnd was Baldur's gate 3 but I'm only like 5 hours in
I can help guide you through it if you like
I'd like that
Sorry about that. Just saw your message.
If you want, you can DM me and i'll guide you through it.
I’m trying to make a wizard character but I’m having trouble with filing it out. Is there a chance an experienced person can help me with this?
Anything particular that is confusing?
what part are you struggling with?
oh so you just need help with items or ability score?
Are you following some kind of guide? In order, I would suggest going through the steps in the rules here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
I would say ability score, the blank sheet with all these words just feels intimidating
oh are you doing it on a normal character sheet?
paper*
yes
when you are done take a pic in case the paper gets ruined or lost
^
learned that the hard way
I'm sorry to hear that
Are you using one of the official ones? It may be easiert to talk about what goes where once we know what you're looking at.
There have been two main character sheets:
2014: https://media.wizards.com/2022/dnd/downloads/DnD_5E_CharacterSheet_FormFillable.pdf
2024: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/br/ph/character-sheet.pdf
From a sheet perspective, not really no. But if you're just getting into D&D, I would actually suggest to learn the 2024 rules first. It's the ruleset that the game will use for all products going forward.
The two aren't all that different, but there are small rules kinks you might stumble over if you start mixing them.
Ok thank you
i am new so is there like events or something to play or is is something else
There are games organized by private individuals. For that, we have separate lfg channels. You can check #find-a-game for guidance on that.
thank you
Alright, so ability scores. Here is the relevant section, step 3.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Step3DetermineAbilityScores
It is suggested that you start with the Standard Array, which are: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8
You can distribute those into the ability score boxes on the sheet as you like. But as a wizard, Intelligence should be your highest score.
Ok, thank you
If you scroll down a bit futher on that link, you'll see some suggested standard arrays per class.
Once you put down the scores, you can figure out the ability score modifier. This number is very important, as it often gets added as a bonus when you roll a check.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#AbilityScoresandModifiers
That modifier goes into the other box on the ability score.
I got that written down
I'm assuming we go left to right when filling out the page, I don't understand saving throws or skills and how to apply them. And proficiency bonus is also confusing me.
We can do the proficiency bonus now, that'll make things easier later. Proficiency bonus purely depends on your level. At level 1 you have a +2 bonus.
It increases very infrequently, as you can see on this table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#CharacterAdvancement
Where and when can I apply the +2?
Mostly, whenever you're proficient in something. We haven't put anything like that down yet.
Ok
We can do an example with the saving throws. As a wizard, you are proficient in two saving throws: Intelligence and Wisdom.
So you can color in the two dots next to those two saving throws.
Now, since you're proficient in intelligence saves and you know your ability score modifier for intelligence, you can add those two up and get the full bonus you have on intelligence saving throws. Write that down in the field next to the dot.
Don't fill it in with permanent marker btw, you'll likely be changing that in a second 😆
Ability score modifiers is the +2 right? and how can I tell that I am proficient in those modifiers?
You can be proficient in skills, which is are the smaller labels like Medicine, Arcana, Acrobatics etc. Each skill is associated with an ability score.
So arcana is associated with Intelligence for example.
Now if you're proficient in Arcana, you get to add your proficiency bonus on any Intelligence (Arcana) checks.
Ok
On the 2014 sheet, you see the associated ability in grey font behind the skills.
mhm
What do I put down for the small dashes next to the bubbles? and can I fill in every skill associated with intelligence and wisdom?
You'll add the total bonus for each skill there. We should wait to do that until you know all your skill proficiencies (which will come from a mix of class/background and perhaps species/race).
It's early in this part of the world, I'm having a coffee 😄
Here comes the first big difference between 2014 and 2024: where you get your ability score increase from. In 2014 it's your race, in 2024 it's your background.
I did buy the most recent player handbook but I am using the 2014 sheet, so which rule should I follow?
In that case let's go with your book.
Have a look in chapter 4 to see a list of backgrounds. Pick one that you like. Each background will list three ability scores that it can increase.
Increase one by 2 and another one by 1, or increase all three by 1. None of these increases can raise a score above 20
You can also note the background name in the field at the top of the sheet for later reference.
Note that these are increasing your ability score (the big number), not the modifier (small number). Your modifier may still increase if you increase the ability score (for example going from 15 to 17 leads to the modifier going from +2 to +3)
Oh ok thank you
I'm having trouble trying to differentiate the big numbers from the little ones, My confusion stems from the unfamiliarity of the terms that the people use to describe stuff basically
Understandable, that's one of the unintuitive bits of D&D
But the rules do take great care in labeling the small numbers as modifiers (and they're usually written with a "+") and the big ones as scores
keeping those two separate helps a lot, look out for the word modifier
so numbers with + or - symbols are modifiers while just numbers are scores?
basically yes
ok, thank you alot
You'll note that the backgrounds also give you a bunch more things, like proficiencies and equipment, which you can add at this point.
I would write my tool proficiency in the same box as equipment?
On the 2014 sheet, I'd put them into the "Other Proficiencies & languages" field
Ok
Deva sorry to be a bother but since we're on this topic, i picked athletics and intimidation as my proficiencies and my background(soldier) mentions both of the proficiencies as well do i put 2 under the proficiencies or +1?
Ah, unfortunately you can't stack proficiencies like that. You'll have to pick two different ones.
got it thanks
And remember that being proficient in a skill just means you add your proficiency bonus to a check using that skill. Even at level 1 that means +2. At level 20 that'll mean +6.
appreciate that I would be super lost without you, thanks for taking the time out of your morning man.
I've written everything down so far, where do we continue?
Next I'd go further in chapter 4 until you get to species. Pick one that you like. Then repeat the process, adding whatever features it gives you into the boxes.

same, watched the just roll with it podcast and gained an interest
some helpful links
That is indeed simple, especially if you go with the recommended feat (Skilled). It basically means you'd get 4 additional skill (or tools) proficiencies overall.
Yeah I got some homework to do
And for the 2014 sheet, the "Heroic Inspiration" human is talking about refers to the "Inpiration" field.
ye the finals are coming up soon we gotta get busy man
Ohhh boy
Alright. Don't forget to add the Speed into its box as well, it will be important specially for combat. For most creatures and player characters that will be 30, but in a chase even a small difference is important.
And some monsters, like dragons, are a lot faster than that 😄
After you chose all of your proficiencies, let's circle back to chapter 3 to check what proficiencies the wizard class gives you. After that, your proficiencies should be fixed and you can start to add the bonuses on the lines next to the dots.
Since you got to choose so many, there may be some duplicates. In those cases you'll have to select different ones, as picking the same skill twice doesn't give you any bonuses.
Dope
Deva this is prob a dumb question but ima raise my hand anyway, there's a textbox beside the Proficiencies, what are they for if they don't stack?
That's where you put your total bonus, calculated with [proficiency bonus] + [ability score modifier]
So where you're not proficient, the bonus will be equal to your ability score modifier.
I wrote starting equipment into the equipment section and I chose my two skill presidencies
Alright hit dice is easy. You have an amount equal to your level. So total hit dice is 1d6. Those are used mostly in short rests to get hit points back.
After that, it's probably best if you carefully read the level 1 features of the wizard and add the features where applicable. Spellcasting is one of the more complex systems.
Ok, thank you for the imput
A lot of the remaining numbers you haven't filled out yet are covered in step 5 of chapter 2.
But you should be able to derive them from what we have gone through so far.
Ok thank you
Hey guys, what's up?
I've played some simple roleplaying games similar to DnD in the past, but not a lot and I've never tried actual DnD. I've been looking at playthroughs and lore videos for a litte now and I've become really interested in playing, but I realized that in my small town there's basically no one that knows about it, let alone a Dungeon Master and players.
However interested I am, I must say that all the numbers and classes and other elements of the game are really intimidating to me, and I'l like to know if anyone here would be willing to help me learn about the game, or help me find a party or DM that runs a more beginner friendly game, with maybe a less complicated version of DnD (if that's a thing?).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en This website cool
Im not sure if that's possible or not just starting, that sounds amazing lmk if that's a thing you should probably head to the lfg channel if you're already set up and ready to go though
hell yeah, they got an app too for mobile which i thought was pretty crazy

#looking-for-players has games offering a traditional D&D experience: one unpaid DM guiding a single party through a shared adventure.
#looking-for-community has free community-style games like West Marches, one-shot locators, and more. These are often easy to join and regularly active, though you might play with different people each session.
#paid-looking-for-game has games that require payment to join. In return, these games might offer a more professional DM experience or more consistent participation.

I just wanna make a character for now
There rules for making one are free. Here's a direct link:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
If you have any specific questions, there are always people here happy to answer.
I was looking at that but there are too many details about leveling and stuff 😭
I just wanna see what build I could make
Don't worry about leveling up at this point - focus on building a level 1 character
leveling is the easy part it's just adding on a couple features and some health
No leveling is fine in itself
But I don't know how milestone type or exp type differ
Which to choose
Weight type and all that stuff I don't know what to select
Milestone is basically just you level up when the dm says so, exp is just leveling up once your exp gets to a certain amount
the weight and stuff depends on the dm that you play with, whether they keep track of it or not
I heard that Milestone is the usual because exp is too much at some point
Stick with milestone for now but you can change that after discussing with your D&D group.
Creating a character: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
- Choose a Class. Every adventurer is a member of a class. A class broadly describes a character’s vocation, special talents, and favored tactics.
- Determine Origin. A character’s origin includes two elements: background and species. How did the character spend the years leading up to a life of adventure? Who are the character’s ancestors? You can also choose your character’s languages.
- Determine Ability Scores. Much of what your character does in the game depends on the character’s six abilities.
- Choose an Alignment. Alignment is a shorthand for your character’s moral compass.
- Fill in Details. Using the choices you’ve made, fill in the remaining details on your character sheet.
milestone allows for a more story driven leveling system whereas exp has a more game driven leveling where you could just kill a bunch of people/things and level up
I mean my goal is mainly to make funny builds and still participate actively in the story
How creative can you be in your spell usage ?
depends on dm, however for the most part the spells say what you can and cant do
To what level the DM and the group's preference for game style allows.
dm's may allow certain things if they deem it so, but i'd recommend checking with the dm first before trying
I had crazy ideas
Teeto is correct that rules as written, the spells mechanically only do what they say they do.
I've seen that on some vague description you can actually do some stuff
My goal is not to cheat the game just to have fun and active fighting
You can ask your DM if you could do x with y but at the end of the day the DM decides what rules are in effect and if something is possible/allowed.
And don't believe all the D&D memes - often times they are stretching things beyond what the rules actually say or what most D&D groups allow/use.
But yes, being creative in your D&D games is some of the fun of this game!
Oftentimes, a DM may allow for more slack than what the rules technically say, but that is them extending some trust to you that you won't try to take a mile from that inch later.
We can't play a fairy ??
Example of creative gameplay:
Rogue: "Can I kick up dirt into the enemy's eyes as I dodge around them to get behind them"
DM: "Sure, make a straight dexterity roll plus your proficiency bonus to see how well you do that."
Rogue: rolls a 5 plus their proficiency bonus of 2, "Ah I only got a 7"
DM: "Your attempt to kick dirt into the enemy's face only manages to plink a small pebble off their chest armor" (but that was a cool move so I'll reward you with inspiration).
With the right book (Wild Beyond the Witchlight) and the DMs permission, you can.
I mean I could tell you what I thought but I don't know what's available yet
I need to buy the book to play a fairy ?
Most of the character options are in books.
Not all D&D things are available for free
The free rules and SRD only provide a good subset of things that 1) help people get started with the game and 2) (in the case of the System Reference Document) Provide a good base to build 3rd party material that is D&D compatible.
you could also look into homebrew options to play a fairy if you dont want to buy the book, but those might be badly made and lots of DMs might not want a homebrew species
especially for a beginner
Yeah I would generally recommend avoiding homebrew until you have a bit more experience with the core game rules and mechanics
Too often homebrew isn't balanced well enough to be used at just any D&D table/game.
Fairies don't have advantage for magic or is it the case for all species
yo is artificer a valid class? I can't find it in the character creation website thingy
Artificer is a paid class from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, or the Eberron book
It's just a super old class back in 2014. But you can still play it.
No race inherently has "advantage on magic", that's dependant mainly on your class, not race / species
Some races/species might have some spells they know naturally, or some features that help with magic, but most of your magic will come from your class
It's fairly new tbh, as it got rereleased 2020
then how do I create an artificer character? just on paper, not from the website? Will dms be ok with that?
If your DM has content sharing and the book, you'll be able to make one on Beyond
You'll still need the book to make on on paper though
If you gain access to the material, you can create it wherever you want. On the website that requires a digital license.
And since it's a class from an expansion, a DM would have to say if it is allowed.
alrighty, might check it out. Thank you!
Are there classes that uses elemental magic I wasn't able to find a spell list
Literally every single spellcaster lol
I just saw the sorcerer level 20
Tf you mean metamagic like time stop ?
Space manipulation ?
Yeah the spells get crazy broken at higher levels
Hence why most people don't play that far.
There's literally a 9th level spell that lets you wish for literally anything you want.
Lmao I just wanted some wind magic to add dmg to thrown dagger or arrows
The basic rules spell lists include a lot of elemental spells. Wizard as an example:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Level1WizardSpells
You can already see by the names
I saw you can basically spawn eldritch gods
Yeah like I said, it gets pretty nuts.
the word basically is doing a lot of heavy lifting there, but sure
Would it be theorically possible to use wind magic to manipulate small weapons
the spells generally say what they do, you can flavor spells as doing that though
flavor is always free
Flavor ?
The 'cosmetics' of a spell
anything that doesn't change what it does, but how it looks like
If I use forcecage, is there no possible way for me to attack the person inside the cage?
If you hit strong enough to destroy the cage and the person inside won't it work ?
i.e Dragon breath spell - allows the target to use a dragon breath using a magic action
My mushroom specie sorceror casts it on himself and instead of opening his mouth to breath fire he releases numerous spores that spew forth before floating momentarily in the affected area and then boom, the spores combust dealing 3d6 fire damage
it just changes the description (flavor) of the action
Doesn't it contradict the coherence of it being dragon magic ?
Lore wise
Lore and flavor are the mushy bits you get to play with.
There isnt "dragon magic", and generally you can flavor things as you like as it doesn't affect the mechanics of a spell
Correct
no, not at all, its just called dragons breath for initial flavor
a wizard might study it as dragons breath, a mushroom sorceror might interpret it as spores of fire, a mechanical artificer might interpret it as flamethrower
it's just a name
well thats if its set to one element but yes
for dragons breath you can choose multiple
What does nature magic count as ?
Well, you have a choice of multiple, but you need to choose one.
thats what I meant
You choose it when you cast the spell. That damage type is then fixed for the duration of the spell.
there's set official damage damage types from off the top of my head theres bludgeoning, piercing, slashing, fire, cold, psychic, lightning, thunder, force, poison, acid.
then theres other rare official ones such as blueberry dmg
What 😭
it was a one time thing they used awhile back for Sheldon the Blueberry Dragon
Do both versions of force cage restrict spells from entering the cage?
yep
"creating a solid barrier that prevents any matter from passing through it and blocking any spells cast into or out from the area." 2024
same wording with 2014 as well
Then I guess wind would be slashing dmg
depends on the spell - could also be bludgeoning or thunder
if you're planning on using spells to immitate wind slashes you'd have to either have homebrew spells approved by your dm or reflavor current spells and keep the damage types
also 2nding deva's statement
Both are fine
I'm not thinking of wind as like manipulating the weather
you could take a look at the Monk subclass Warrior of the Elements
Just reflavoring is fine to me
Let me see
if you're wanting to throw out wind slashes or even use other elements and can change your damage type as well
oh that's not how spell casting works btw
oh wait i might be wrong
And does "power word kill" does what I think it does ??
it's certainly a level 9 spell, but you'll need to be a spellcaster level 17 to cast it
^
I have an Artificer Orc Chef named Grog that casts spells using his cooking cauldron.
He can splash his food onto enemies as Acid Splash, or spill it all over the floor to act as the Grease spell.
You can get pretty creative with it.
No fire dmg ?
the spell casting starts off at 1st lvl spells and gives you access to higher level spells every 2 levels so at lvl 3 you can use 2nd level spells, level 7 4th lvl spells, etc
Have you ever spilled hot soup over yourself?? It burns like acid!
can't change the dmg type or it wouldn't be reflavored and would just be a different spell all together
yes but the requirement is that the target have less than 100hp
I just wondered if there wasn't a fire spell that could fit in their character
Is 100hp a lot ?
High level spells do powerful things, but you're unlikely to see them in most of your games. It's rare that a campaign (or even one shot) goes that high.
You can do that. I could make it so that the 3rd level spell Fireball has him conjure a giant meatball.
lvl 1 characters will have less than 20 and it's probably not going to get higher than 100 until lvl 5 minimum with specific barbarian builds
most characters will end up with anywhere from 150-250 hp late game
I guess a lvl 9 wizard do more than 100dmg per action
I think*
Again, not level 9 wizard. A level 9 wizard can't cast power word kill.
if there's multiple targets and they can cast an aoe dmg spell
That's complicated
Writing a novel seems easier than dnd smh 😭
the 2024 PWK does damage instead if the target has more HP, so thats neat
Yeah, it's not the easiest system to grock. Here's a spellcaster level and associated spell slot level table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#MulticlassSpellcasterSpellSlotsperSpellLevel
very nice
its unfortunate that spell levels and character levels both use the same term
fr fr
its complicated to wrap your head around it at first but once you get it you get it
dnd seems a bit overwhelming at first, but you dont need to know all the rules at once.
What are ranger's spells and weapons ?
too many for me to be bothered listing for spells but normally swords and bows
main spell is hunters mark which makes you do 1d6 more dmg when you hit with an attack roll
the ranger spells are in its spell list https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells?filter-class=2190882
So it's mostly debuff ?
(specified attack roll so you can't use magic missile)
its a buff to you but you target on an enemy
I guess there was an op magic missile strat at some point huh
ranger spells tend to be nature themed, some utility, so support, some damage.
I had a friend build a two weapon fighting slash 4 times so 4d6 potentially just from that one spell
I mean if you target an enemy that's a debuff technically even if only you can benefit out of it
the ranger imo suffers from being heavily built around hunters mark (yes it can be built around other things but it's largely geared towards that spell)
All I want is to throw tornadoes around rest is unimportant
Eh, I find that this only bothers entrenched players tbh.
oh wym?
In that they feel that they always need to have hunters mark up or they're doing something wrong. And if they do that, they can't cast other concentration spells.
This is sort of an optimizer-adjacent mindset which new players aren't even going to notice.
that's valid, granted it would be alot nicer to have abit more variety of choice
fair enough
Do I need anything prepared and/or ready before I play?
It’s a good idea to have a general understanding of the core game rules and mechanics and then have a decent idea of how your character sheet works and your character features.
Dice or a dice rolling app is also a good idea.
A willingness to be a team player and work with everyone at the table to make sure everyone has fun (and feels safe) is also great.

How do people find games to join? Like online ones that do it through vc either with real dice or not
How hard can you mess up character creation by manually filling out the sheet and reading the handbook?
Some good info here https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227
Ty ty
How messed up? Nothing that can’t be fixed later really. And doing it by hand can be a great learning experience.
As long as you've read the rules before filling out the sheet, you should be fine. Chapter 2 of the PHB (and the Free Rules) can guide you through the process
Anyone know a good place to look for a Dungeon Master? I have a group of online friends who are down to play but no one wants to be the DM 🤣
Sounds like one of you are just gonna have to swallow the pill i'm afraid.
I suggest picking straws.

Good morning
Morning
im trying to get into dnd but i dont know any experienced players that live in my area to teach me properly and its just really difficult since if i were to play with my friends i would have to dm. I learnt the basics by myself and hosted a game but i was a preety bad dm because i was inexperienced and it was mostly storytelling since i didnt know what monsters to use and also completely forgot that loot was a thing. So if anyone wants to tell me like things to remember or retain as a beginner dm let me know. I especially dont know how to organize combat. I have build a world but it's still really hard to keep up with all of the rules.
Welcome! There are a lot of great DM tips in the free rules, a lot of which I would second. I can heartily recommend a read of the whole thing:

Where can I find an online group to join? :/
I'd suggest a reward system? Try to make it subtle, like if they do good enough deeds or something—at the end of the session a special npc will say "you've been very good people and for that I'll do this" or something of that matter. This is just my personal suggestion since some games with a morale system do it to encourage good honor
Uhh #looking-for-players , #looking-for-dm , #looking-for-community might help
How do i add my name on looking-for-dm?
Type /looking and click the one you want it starts a bot post
Thanks ✨️
Wait acc idk if what im gonna say is allowed in this channel but our group is looking for more players atm
I thought it was vc dnd ? How do we play? Is it a videogame or smthn?
Im down 🙌. Im new to this tho idk if ill endup causing issue ://
DnD is a game that is played entirely in the imagination. There are certain programs or websites used to help visualize what's happening that are frequently used, though.
Dnd is a roleplay imaginative game (i think)
How and where do I play it?
You read up on the rules, find some friends, and play!
You have to look for a group to play with first
Voice chat is often used when playing online, since that's the easiest way to interact with other people
Any new comer friendly groups you might know?

But I would highly recommend reading through the basic rules first.
Actually, you can join ours—we're looking for more players rn
Yesyes, and also deciding what role you wanna play as
This server itself doesn't have voice chat, because games aren't played here. Usually when you find a group, someone will set up a server dedicated to your game to chat on

Yep. D&D does happen to be an entertainment product.

Yeah, the free rules has every piece of information necessary to play.
You can think of the paid, supplemental material in the same way that DLC exists for video games, for example.

where can i find the one shot campains because i cannot guarantee showing up to every session cause of shool
We don’t have a dedicated section for one-shots here. They’d just be in #looking-for-players or #paid-looking-for-game along with the rest.
Or you might find a server in #looking-for-community that regularly hosts one-shots.

Druids can cast healing spells
But they dont' specifically have a "healing focussed" subclass.
If you want to focus on healing as a druid, you certainly can.
A number of Drew and subclasses do give additional healing abilities.
I may choose healing damage switch
They’re just not all-in on healing itself, like life cleric is.
like heal myself and can become a frontliner if needed (tbf I did expect to an extent my druid regains their original class as a multiclass)
as it feels like it could be a major plot point where at some point during the story my character regains fighter
I mean fighter gets second wind

Hello. I’ve never played a DnD game before but I am familiar with it after watching quite a bit of Critical Role and playing Baldur’s Gate 3 for 1k hours. I sought this discord server because I am now interested in joining an online group to get the DnD experience. I have just read the faq and looked at the lfg channel. Any advice or tools I should use for a noob like me?
You got a character yet?
No I have nothing. But I can try to make one.
DnD Beyond is the easiest way to make a DnD character online but it's up to you.
Alright I will do so, thank you very much.
Hello! Tonight I'm planing on playing DND with my friends for the first time as DM. I am trying to prepare, I will probably end up making a story for todays session even if it doesn't go perfectly, but I am right now creating the player characters and there are a lot of things that I don't know what are used for. I've been watching videos like hour and half but I think talking with someone would help me understand a whole better
And I would appreciate a lot any recomendations aswell
Welcome! If there are any specific questions you have we'd be happy to help, otherwise the Free Rules are linked in this channel's pins as well as in #learn-to-play
there are a lot of things that I don't know what are used for.
Such as?
Each part of the skill tree perception, sleight of hand, stealth.. How would you use it in a real game? And also the death saves (why are there 3 squares?)
The current hit points part I'm also not really sure, as well as inspiration and proficiency bonus
Or why there's another list of the same main abilities as saving throws. Checking the most "oficial" sheet I found
In general, you ask for an ability check when a character attempts some course of action and their success or failure makes a meaningful difference to the story.
A perception check is used when they try to notice something around them, like searching for traps.
A sleight of hand check is used when they try to do things like pickpocket.
A stealth check is used when they try to hide or sneak around unnoticed.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#SkillList
Death saves occur when a player falls to 0 hit points.
On each turn, they roll a d20. A 10 or higher is a success; anything less is a failure.
They track their successes and failures separately.
So there should be three spots there to track successes, and three to track failures.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#DeathSavingThrows
Next, your characters current hit points should equal their hit point maximum. The hit point maximum at level one for each class is shown here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Level1HitPointsbyClass
Inspiration is a reward that DMs can give their players. They can spend it to reroll any die once.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#HeroicInspiration
A character’s proficiency bonus essentially represents the depth of their training. If a character has proficiency with a weapon, for example, they can add their proficiency bonus to the attack roll, making them more likely to hit with that weapon.
The value of your proficiency bonus depends entirely on your level. At level 1, it’s a +2.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#ProficiencyBonus
And then these are for your ability scores and ability score modifiers. It’s maybe the most important section of the sheet. You’ll need to fill those out before you can start adding most of the other numbers on your sheet.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Step3DetermineAbilityScores
By any chance is there anyone that would be able to help walk me through the basics of dnd beyond? My friends and I want to start playing dnd but none of us have actually ever played. I sort of know the basics but I want to help my friends actually enjoy dnd to its fullest
hey is roll 20 and D&D beyond good for finding a group???
Do you know know anywhere I can find a premade character for reference?
roll20 has lots of people offering games, so probably
not sure about the activity on the DDB forums
Not quite sure what you mean with this
When a player reaches 0 HP instead of dying instantly* they fall unconscious. If they start their next turn at 0 HP they must start making death saving throws.
This is a special saving throw done at the start of their turn. As with all saving throws this is a type of d20 test, so the player must roll a d20 to determine the outcome.
*(The special exception is when they take enough damage in a single instance to get to 0 HP, and the remaining damage is equal to or greater than their max HP, in which case they do instantly die. For example, a Fighter who has 12 Max HP would instantly die if they took 24 damage from one attack).
A death saving throw isn't tied to a specific stat, so normally it's determined by a plain roll of the d20. There are 4 possible outcomes of this saving throw:
- On a 1, a critical failure occurs, which counts as 2 failed Death Saving Throws (mark 2 failures on the sheet)
- On a 2-9, a failure occurs (mark 1 failure on the sheet)
- On a 10-19, a success occurs (mark 1 success on the sheet)
- On a 20, a critical success occurs and you regain 1 HP (thereby becoming conscious again)
If a character gets 3 failures before they get 3 successes, they die. If a character gets 3 successes before 3 failures, they stabilize and no longer have to make Death Saving Throws until they take damage again. They become conscious again when they regain HP. See here for the full rules on that bit
But you just trow the dice once at the start of the turn?
Yup
So you just mark 1 square on the sheet each time
You mark either one of the success boxes or failure boxes depending on the result
And if the fight ends, the player remains death?
No, they make death saving throws until they get 3 successes, 3 failures, regain HP, or get stabilized
No, you can make death saving throws in combat
But just one I think you said
In fact, that's where most of them happen I reckon
At the start of the turn
Combat is broken down into rounds, in which every combatant has a turn
Rounds represent 6-second chunks of time
I can't send images here, rip
That's sad because then we won't be able to use the same sheet again
The average combat lasts ~3-5 turns, so if a player went down on their first turn they'd need to make Death Saving Throws starting on their second
If you're using physical sheets I recommend using pencil instead of pen, or having whiteout on hand
Ohh, that's why
I was filling it in a web and planning to print it
Otherwise digital sheets like those on DDB have ways to toggle marks for DSTs
I wanted to show you what I've done so far, in case I placed anything stupid
You can DM it if you'd like
Btw, thanks for helping
Np
Hi
Hiii
Hi i am new to this. Can we play d&d here?
Welcome! This server doesn't host games here, but our group finding instructions can be found in #find-a-game
guys can someone explain how modifiers work and what they are
when you make an attack, an ability check or a saving throw, you usually add modifiers to the d20 roll. what modifiers depends on the roll and what features you have. I'll give an example in a sec
Example: you are a fighter and attack an enemy with a Longsword. your Strength score is 16 in this example, so the STR modifier is +3. Your proficiency bonus is +2 at level 1. and you are proficient with longswords.
so you roll 1d20 + 3+ 2 and the total result determines if you hit or not
str ?
short for Strength
commonly used abbreviations in the community:
STR = Strength
DEX = Dexterity
CON = Constitution
INT = Intelligence
WIS = Wisdom
CHA = Charisma
just the first three letters basically
makes sense
ok im going to read that again
i should learn the modifier table right?
for ability scores? I guess. but its not too complicated. basically a score of 10 = 0 modifier, and every +2 in the score equals an additional +1 in the modifier
also, the more you have higher skills depending on abilities the higher the modifier is right ? why is that ? it reduces the low skills chances to succeed an action
i mean it's logical but makes it hard
not sure I quite understand what you are asking? generally, higher numbers are better in dnd
im saying that if my skills suck for wisdom got example, the modifier will 70% make me fail my action if i roll a low number
and as a newbie it scares me i might die fast and all
well yes, characters tend to specialize to some extend.
and do you know what's best between xp and milestones ? and how to lvl up fast
the Dungeon master decides how leveling works. there isnt really a way to game the system there
and typically, the whole group levels together
if you want your character to be harder to kill, the main aspects to focus on would be hitpoints and armor class, but you dont need outrageous numbers to be relatively safe in most games.
Keep in mind at lower levels enemies will also have lower hit bonuses and damage output, so it's not like early levels are super deadly.
And Druids are a fine class, not sure why you're worried about lasting
they seem weak
why would you think that? druids can use a shield for example, and as long as you have a reasonable CON score, you will be fine
Yeah they have some nice defenses as well as offenses
i will say, Druids are not the easiest class to grasp for beginners, but they are not considered weak in general
Also, skills don't really factor into combat that much tbh. Only a few character options even call for a skill check mid-combat.
can you change any of these around?
I would put the 16 in WIS, the 14 in CON or DEX and maybe the 13 in the other of those 2
Personally I'd do 8 / 13 / 14 / 12 / 16 / 12, similar to Omegon
could you explain why so i have a better understanding
For one, Wisdom is your main class stat
okay so WIS is your main stat as Druid. your spells use it
CON is for hitpoints and saving throws
Dexterity is for armor class, saves and initiative
you dont have much use for STR, and CHA+INT are mostly relevant for skill checks
thank you both of you i will change these rn
Np!
What would you do for a thief rogue?
I just put mine in randomly based off what I thought would be “useful” so I’m 8str/15dex/10con/13int/14wis/12cha
Doesn’t look to bad could switch something to get higher con so more HP
I’m assuming you’ve not added racial/background stat increases
Oh sorry I’m a variant human - but no I didn’t add them. With them they’re 8/16/10/13/15/12
Okay! Now it’s 8/16/10/14/14/12 - why are even numbers better to start with though? I thought the higher the better
Even numbers are when you get an uptick in your modifiers (every +2 over 10 = an extra +1 in the modifier, so a 16 score would be a +3 modifier)

hello, im Gaster and im new to this server, i know little bit about dnd
Hi people! I’m also quite new. I know dnd exists and some very basic rules, can someone help me out? Thanks 🙂
If you’re new to D&D check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel. Feel free to ask any specific questions here or in an appropriate channel. If you’re ready to look for a game or group to join, read the information in #find-a-game carefully to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels.
And welcome to the server!
fast guestion before i go, i have few homebrew stuff, like item, monster and species, are tose allow ?
helloo very new to D&D and stuff and I really wanna be able to convince my friends cause it seems like something we would all enjoy
how do I like- introduce them to it and what are like the requirements to start other than dice (I am not addicted to buying dice for no reason I swear)
well, there few ways, you can show them some animation about dnd or some campaign like foolsgold or unce unpon a wichlight, or explain to them shortly what dnd and whats i about, how i got hook was herectical fun house on youtube, there many option you can choose
Gaster, allowing home brew is 100% up to you DM and group you play with. Just be forewarned a lot of it can be unbalanced.
Jylinn. If you want one clip that fires an AMAZING job of explaining D&D look on you tube for “Deborah Ann Will teaches Jon Bernthal Dungeons and Dragons” If that don’t help try finding other you tube videos that you think are cool and that your friends would think so too
I showed it to a guy (we are in our 40’s) that thought it sounded super stupid from what he knew all his life. I showed him that clip and now he found a local group to play with
thank you, and i try to keep them as balance as posible so dont worry, and few are for the DM as nice boss/mini-bosse if you want i can show you one of mine favorite one its called fruit garden golem
Sure yer more than welcome to DM me
DM for any questions If u new
Losing my mind trying to choose between Paladin and Barbarian
They're both very fun!
Hello
I'm beyond new to this. An online friend is making me make a character so I'm just making for the most part, a character that sounds cool. Prioritising over game mechanics
Would recommend paladin, if you are new, it’ll make you understand spells and weapons, and it’s just my recommendation for new players.
Do you all typically communicate during combat? Since a turn is 6 seconds, I figured everybody should just do their own stuff
My idea of a paladin is this
Absolute beast of a man (human) with a burning hatred of injustice and fights injustice with absolute brutality. No loyalty to gods or kings, only fighting evil
The player can take as long is as reasonable. 6 seconds is how long the full round seems to the actual characters.
Is there a channel here where I can advertise sessions?
Sure is! Check out #find-a-game to see where/how to post.
Thanks!
makes sense
Someone's been playing Doom I see! That would work just fine for a paladin
It's a mixture of Doomguy and me
I mean the only thing is you need a vow
What's that?
A Paladin's oath is what gives them their magic, traditionally. At level 3, that oath manifests as a specialization of their abilities, also known as a subclass.
Ah, vows are oaths
I've seen some reddit posts say that oaths don't need to be divine or to a organisation or person. Like sheer willpower can manifest itself
That's referred to as "flavoring" the mechanics of your character. Most DMs are ok with it, but it's safe to check with yours first before you commit to the idea 100%.
Correct.
but do contact your dungeon master
I don't have one
I see.
Whenever you get one, then
I'm not a dungeon master, I'm just helping advertisement. Am I allowed to post a looking for players?
Not really
Do you mean you're looking for players for a game that you're in, but you're not the DM for?
Exactly
I see. I'm not positive what the best method of doing so is. Maybe another regular or mod can offer some advice.
Ok, which mod would you advice me to ask?
#moderator-support is the general channel to ask questions to the mod team.
Got it
Lol the entertainer gladiator background was not what I was expecting. I was expecting, you know, a gladiator
Soldier might be the closer one, mechanically, to what you're looking for. It doesn't mean you have to be a literal soldier.
I clicked gladiator because I was imagining for my character an enslaved gladiator that led an uprising and destroyed his slavers
But alas
Hey maybe that'd work with folk hero?
It certainly could. Since it sounds like this is your first character, I'd recommend sticking to the options in the 2024 Player's Handbook for simplicity. The ones you've listed so far are from older books, and will require some updating that might be a little needlessly complex for you at this stage.
Yeah I'm looking at 2014 and 2024
Simplicity is king. I'd recommend using the newer ones.
That's because they are open ended to allow you to fill in the blanks on your own.
That's why Soldier could easily fit the gladiatorial slave who rose up against their masters.
Older backgrounds must be adapted to fit with the new rules, which requires you to add a number of things to them in order to make them function as intended. It's not too difficult to learn how to do, but it's certainly a few extra steps that are unnecessary in the grand scheme of things when you can just pick a fully built background.
Yes that'd make sense
But I could also see him being a commoner (blacksmith since I chose smith's tools), which would be a folk hero, and then he was enslaved and sent to the gladiatorial pits where he both honed his skills and was trained in combat, which'd make him him a Paladin or Barbarians
If I'm being entirely honest, it really seems like you're overthinking this. Backgrounds come with prompts and suggestions that you can choose to use if you want, to help you role play, but mechanically speaking they're nothing more than a set of stats and proficiencies. You can just pick the one who's mechanical effect best matches what you want, and then role play your character's personality and history however you want
This character is like pure flavour. I have zero experience with the game nor do I have a DM or party to play with
So like, I don't know what mechanics I want
Which background's bonuses help you tell the story you want to tell?
Well I don't know what I don't know, but I like how folk hero speaks of being a commoner who stood up against a tyrant
Wait bonuses
yes
Yeah smith's tool would let me work on armour and weapons
Feats
Wait, do backgrounds have those?
in the 2024 rules, yes. Each background has an associated origin feat that you recieve
For example, if you pick the Soldier background, you get the Savage Attacker feat, but if you pick the Farmer background, you get the Tough feat
I think I'm using 5E/2014. I picked Tavern Brawler
Tavern Brawler is a feat, not a background. If you are using the 2014 rules, then backgrounds do not come with feats
YEah that's what I'm saying. I think
only background with that is sailor
I'm making a homebrew spell and I'm kinda confused on how to do it. What kind of spell would time stop be? Transmutation?
That’s already a spell
Oh, my apologies. Where do I check the spells?
First off, I HIGHLY recommend that you avoid making or using homebrew content if you are a newcomer and still learning how to play the game. Secondly, discussions of homebrew content should go in the #homebrew channel, since its not really beginner friendly content
A searchable list of all the spells in the game can be found here:

thank you guys i appreciate it
Hello i am new
What was your first campaign?
I haven't had one in D&D yet. We've played DSA, but our dungeon master never has time, and D&D sounded fun. Now I'm creating a character^^
I got a question for all you veterans. Is it allowed if my character is a rogue but he has magic. Like he was born with it but refuses to use it because of trauma, so he just uses a bow and arrow and snipes people
Sure, you can do that. Mechanically I'd just pick rogue. Perhaps pick up the arcane trickster subclass at level 3, if you actually want to start using some magic.
Story wise you have a lot of leeway, but from a mechanics side, pick whatever supports your story.
Yeah I think I put way too much lore and trauma on this guy
I mean he accidentally burned down his village, killing his entire family when he was 6 years old
(And I have some plans to give him more trauma during next session)
If the DM and the other players are good with that, sounds good to me.
Just got through my first ever dnd session
Necromancer+Bard
A pen & paper game from Germany, Das Schwarze Auge (The Black Eye)
That's interesting, how's that going?
Cool, sounds fun the black eye part cause idk German
So far, the creation is going very good. I've finished the backstory and everything. And I've picked out spells I like.^^
How was it?
That's good! What's the backstory?
pretty good. It was the DM's first time too so It was a little rough but it was fun
Well it will be for a bit, but at least everyone is learning together
Yeah, It was fun to finally use my character
hi Im new just wondering how to play my first dnd game?
He is a high elf from a family of magicians, sent to the academy, he quickly decided to pursue necrimancy. Despite his family's contempt, he continued because he felt that he hast a Bond to The dark arts. He's fresh out of the academy, spoiled by his family, and armed with self-created spells, like a magical scythe he enchanted himself as his final project. It doesn't bother him That His Family ist abandoning him. He doesn't really consider bonds with others very important. He doesn't feel any real affection or compassion for humanoids. However, he does have a heart for animals. He has no interest in fame or in helping people. But he knows with his abilities he can be an adventurer. And although he doesn't care about adventurers, he knows he can practice necrimancy If He is one. And that fills him with joy. Besides, he can earn money. And he wants to live a good, happy life until he dies.

Hi
is there a bot to help noobs
Idk I'm noob my self
Welcome! We've got a bunch of handy info in #learn-to-play to help you get started.
But if you've got any questions, there's a bunch of friendly not-bots around to help, too. 👋
If I may, is there a requirement for tipping in looking for dm/players?
No
Any games that require (or encourage) payment should be posted only in #paid-looking-for-game.
And those DM's shouldn't be contacting you in #looking-for-dm unless you've explicitly opted in for it in your post.
Ok, thanks
Hello
Welcome!
Tyty
sorry if im using this channel wrong but i just need some advice on what to tell my friend for their first d&d session/help calm them down. they are really nervous and i just want to help them out and calm them down before the first session
Evening y’all
helloo
How are u
I have not slept because I thought I could make a homebrew campaign right off the gate but other than that I'm good
Glad yer good. I can honestly say I have been running and growing my homebrew world for 10 years so go get some sleep, you have time
Honestly thinking if I should still stick to it cause me and my friends are total newbies and I've been told to start with some pre-made stuff and one shots so my brain doesn't explode
Probably a good idea to do a few premade yes
What are they nervous about specifically?
mostly about the roleplaying/meeting pretty much random people but i think i calmed down their nerves
Hi there, I am new to dnd, I was wondering if someone could help me create my first character, I wanted to create someone who could create and use puppets for battle but I don’t know how to do one properly, thanks

if anyone wants to share how they started off dnd in a way which could help me please let me know, im not too familiar with the in depth rules, but i've watched a one piece campaign made by a guy named rustage, and it's really making me wants to lean how to play
ello. Older player, I bailed after 4e, went to pathfinder/starfinder and I'm meandering back for a campaign. Checking out the state of the sytem.
I was 12 and teenage mutant and ninja turtles came out, I picked up a book not knowing it was a role playing book, really liked it and said well I guess I'm running a role playing game now
Atix if you need to find a group, Organized play.. i don't know what its called in this sytem, is a great way to find a few people and learn the rules from the ground up. Groups can be.. bags of mixed nuts though.
i just don't know where to go to look for groups
Let me look around I'm sure they have one. I hope its better than the one i had to make...
😭
thank youu
Atix Try a bit further down in adventurers league. I don't see an easy group finder
Or to do it the other way, find a local gaming store and see if they have Adventurers leaugue (AL) or some other D&D group there with room. Most gaming stores these days have game space set aside

Roll then math there is no point in calculating your bonuses 3 times , rolling, forgetting to do it again, and then rolling either a 1 so you know you failed or a 19 so you know you succeeded
Read your character sheet, dont worry about making mistakes, have fun
my group seems chill but it’d be super embarrassing to mess up during something important
maybe i should take notes
Some notes are always good - at the very least you'll hear a name that you might want to remember later.
You’ll be fine, https://media.wizards.com/2022/dnd/downloads/dnd_turn_ref_2022.pdf try printing one of these can help you with the basics
yo mates is an assimar not a good starter class»? really want to make my first character (sorcerer) and considering them
You mean species? Sure, aasimar are great. On the whole, I'd really just pick whatever species thematically speaks to you.
yeah species ahaha
thanks mate :), in dnd beyond on the character sheet i can only find variant aasimar tough
I see. It seems you own the 2014 Dungeon Masters Guide, where that was an option.
The aasimar aren't in the free rules. The newest version of them was printed in the 2024 Players Handbook. There are also older versions of them in "Volo's Guide to Monsters" (oldest 2014 one) and "Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse" (newest 2014 one)
ohhh
yeah i dont recommend taking variant aasimar. its not really considered an official option the same way the others mentioned by Deva are
Hi, can anyone help me create my first character? I was thinking of a warlock or sorcerer or ranger

ok i'm running a DND campaign
my player used heat metal on a sword mimic (in my campaign if the mimic is chest, the outside area is wood, the inside is flesh)
but i'm pretty confused whether to make it critical hit as 4d8 or not
since it's pretty homebrewed
i need advice
That's more a #dm-discussion but the moment you go homebrew it's kind of on you as the DM to decide how it works and how to balance it.
Heat metal cannot critically hit since there’s no attack roll involved
I just bought the progressive and starter set cause I'm new to DND and I'm playing with my family so which book should I read first
Meant essential kit
are you the DM or a player? if DM, the DMG. if player, the player's handbook. then switch over to the other.
I am the DM so thx
in that case, I'd add on monster manual afterwards, then the module you're using (if you're using one)
Hi! New to DnD. My cousins are super into it and I'd like to learn a little more in my own time. Where can I start?
In any case, I think the Player's Handbook should come first. It lays out the groundwork for the game in its entirety.
You'll not have context for a number of stuff the DMG talks about if you don't already know what the PHB contains.
I have the Starter set stormwreck isle and Essential Kit ice spire
ah, deva is right actually, ive done an unsmert
Hey Rabbit, There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
mitcho are you famous
I dont believe so
I run campaigns for folks and charge a small fee per session. I have been a DM for over 35 years
Famous here for helping folks :)
ohh i see
Thanks Deva. I love D&D so much I don't mind helpin!
Professional generally means you get paid for the thing you’re doing. Aka if you’re making money off of DM’ing, then you can consider yourself a professional DM.
Im not sure if this is the right word to use but when will the psion class be "playable"? I tried making a character in dnd beyond but apparently theres no option for it in classes
Heyy how do i join someone campaign? Im new to dnd
Generally, DDB implements published rules. Psion, unless I missed something, is still in UA and thus is not something DDB usually shows.
we dont have a release date for Psion yet. If it leaves the UA process, I think we have a good chances to see it within a year, but sometimes the process takes longer
Hey vish
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
D&D beyond stopped supporting UA options a while back, but (with DM permission) the UA is playable if you’re using pen and paper sheets.
The kit has everything you need
copy
The adventure will have the monsters in the back, the kit comes with the basic rules
i know what the general meaning stands for. just thought he was being mediated.
any curently starting campain around?
i have some basic game knowlege and searching for a group too play with

ah ok

Just got the player’s handbook
Hi
howdy!!!
Hello. Ive played DND before in an after school club before, but its been a while since then. And even then, I didn't completely understand the game fully. I would really appreciate if there were any campaigns that would be willing for me to join them. Thank you
There should be some sessions available for you guys who are new in #looking-for-players
You might have to look far back in that channel
Hello…. I’ve listened to a lot of D&D podcasts, and I even played a game once, but it was basically a one shot and I was the DM
weird question but how would i refer to my character?
would i just say "I" or "He"?
However you imaging that character would like to be referred to.
Or even in 3rd person "My character would like..."
Or "<character name> would like to..."
Players tend to use those things interchangeably. To some extent, the player is both the player (I) and the character (I/ pronoun), so whatever makes you happy between your choices works.
ok cool thanks
oh and also um how would i go about interjecting my character actions?
like if something is happening and i wanna say something my character does but i dont want to interrupt
I wrote down a whole ton of Fey Curses (With help from a friend), want to see them?
Sounds like #homebrew
Ah thank you
Usually a game session involves a number of exchanges where the DM runs a cut scene or describes what is happening and then gives players a chance to do what they want their character to do. Generally, then.
sorry, anyone interested or playing d&d right now? if i'am in a wrong room please guide me to the right one sorry for the inconvenience. and thank you for you help.
Finding a game here inevitably involves #looking-for channels. To understand those better and how to post, see, #find-a-game
is it possible for me to gain proficiency with tools just by using them a lot?
If your DM allows it - but usually tool proficiency comes from a background or class feature
ah ok thanks
Is tool proficiency something you can get from use of downtime?
Is there a way to look for just a one shot game
Diggles. Ad enturers league?
for thrown weapons how many actions would it be to take a spear out and throw it?
Assuming 2024, the Thrown property on a thrown weapon specifies:
If a weapon has the Thrown property, you can throw the weapon to make a ranged attack, and you can draw that weapon as part of the attack.
So it just takes the Attack action.
(or any other thing that allows you to make an attack with the spear, but I'm simplifying)
alr thanks

Hello guys, I'm from Egypt and here nobody have ANY idea what even DnD is, I know it and watched some Dimension 20 videos and I love the role playing, found an Arabic server that tries to play but they lacked some story telling and role playing elements and I didn't enjoy them very much, I'm Fluent in English and have no problem speaking/understanding, have created some characters on DnD Beyond(the server I found required them to be level 5) they are very basic, lacking backstory elements but I'm very new at this, looking for a beginner friendly party? or discord server or anything really
Very newb question coming in
I've been reading the player's handbook 2024 and it says one spell with a spell per turn
Does that mean I can do multiple cantrip per turn
What about quickened spell from sorceress meta magic doesn't that kind of void it
You can do multiple cantrips yes, but only 1 spell per turn
