Yes - play by post (PBP) is a way to play D&D.
You might look through game postings in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community and see if folks are running a game that way.
DDB also has a fairly lively pbp community if you want to check out how it can look in practice
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/play-by-post
are beginners welcome? I have never played a dnd game in my entire life
Many groups are fine taking on a new to D&D player - but it really helps if that player has done their homework and reads up on the rules so the group doesn't have to devote all their time to teaching the new player.
okay that's reasonable. I just thought I might want to join one soon while at work.
You certainly don't need to know it all, but knowing the bits that relate to your character and their features will help.
And one of the positives of pbp is that you can look up things without taking up session time.
Joined my first campaign im starting playing soon
what are my hit dice and how do i calculate hp?
Hit point dice are what determine your hit points and how much healing you get during a short rest
They're determined by your class. For example, for a wizard it's a d6
You have one hit point dice of your classes type per level in that class. So a level 5 wizard has 5d6 hit point dice
Your starting HP is the maximum roll of your hit point dice, plus your constitution modifier. For example a wizard with a +3 Con would have 6+3 = 9 hit points at level 1
Each time you level up, you can either
- roll your hit point dice, add your constitution modifier to the roll, and add that to your hit points, or
- take the average of your hit points dice, round up, add your con modifier, and at that to your hit points
E.g a level 2 wizard starting at 9 hit points could either roll a 5, add 3, for a total of 17, or take the average of 4 (3.5 rounded up), add 3 for a total of 16
Is it a good idea to host my first dnd session with "monster only" game? (The player is only allowed to use creature from monster list)
Also note that if your constitution modifier changes, it retroactively changes your hit points
Say our wizard above increases their con mod from 3 to 4 at level 4
They were taking the average, so
level 1 = 6 + 3
level 2 = 4 + 3
level 3 = 4 + 3
level 4 = 4 + 3
total = 30 hit points
With a +4 con that's now
level 1 = 6 + 4
level 2 = 4 + 4
level 3 = 4 + 4
level 4 = 4 + 4
total = 34 hit points
nope, not at all
monster stat blocks are not designed to be used by players as they're primary characters and that's not how the game is balanced
Please tell me more about why you'd want to try this
The exceptions are sidekicks (which have special rules) and survivors (designed for non-typical horror play) both of which are featured in specific books outside the core rules
If you are starting brand new fresh and want to avoid making characters, use pre-made characters
Hmm... Idk, it seems interesting and simple (for the dm, mightnot be for player)
I'll check the rule of sidekick
It will not be simple, D&D has what's called asymetric design; monsters and PCs are designed differently so that the balance against each other, but not against themselves
Again, why? Sidekicks are intended to just be simplified PCs for use alongside standard PCs when you need to either pad out the party or have a temporary player, that kind of thing
So even if all my player use CR 1 monsters, its still isnt as balanced as how it sounds
Ah... I see I see, alright, I'll check the sidekick rule and reconsider the idea
This still begs the question why? if you're new to the game why not play the game as intended first before venturing into other modes of play?

Morning Wired
i have been looking for an active server for games
i am in one rn but they have max level 10
could you help me out?
follow the instructions in #find-a-game
That's where the game finding info is
Hi, how do I find beginner friendly games? I'm a complete noob with no experience, it's honestly a bit intimidating lol. Any help is appreciated.
Please do not ping me
?
Hey words
follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Hello I have a question is warlock good for beginners?
It's not what many would call a "beginner friendly" class, but that doesn't mean you can't play a warlock as a newcomer
If it interests you, go for it
Thanks homie
Well the reason why I asked is I am in a D&D campaign with a path of the world tree barbarian warrior of the shadow monk life domain cleric Evoker
Wizard Oath of Devotion
Paladin battle smith artificer
Some classes just take a little more study than others.
But none if it’s unknowable.
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
rogue being low complexity makes sense
What should I do if one of the party members becomes a vampire
I say go with whatever interests you most.
That's probably a conversation you should have with your group.
Well I'm the DM and one of the plot points involves it so I don't want to give it to my players necessarily but I'm assuming he wouldn't have to leave the party
True also, I just noticed you have a banjo Kazooie profile picture, dude I remember those games fantastic choice
Apologies, I'm new to Discord and wasn't aware
Ah, if you're looking for advice as a DM, I'd recommend asking in #dm-discussion.
What does DC mean?
Difficulty Class
When you make an ability check or a saving throw, you succeed if your total equals or exceeds the DC.
If it's less than the DC, you fail.
As a general rule of thumb, DC 10 is an easy task, 15 is medium, and 20 is hard.
Ok, thanks!
How do you decide the DC
A feature tells you what the DC is, or where you can find the DC. If you're the DM and improvising how difficult a challenge would be which isn't described in the rules, then you decide what the DC is
hello! im a beginner DM and i wanted to know if anyone have some advice to give or something i must know...
Hi I want to create my first charakter. Do you know any page that has great decription of classes etc?
Up to you: raw they need to die and be ressurected to be cured
hey yall
Pretty much up to you.
Remember that 10 is considered easy, 15 medium difficulty, 20 hard, and so on
For more specific questions, feel free to ask in #dm-discussion .
But, mainly, remember to have fun!
It's not a problem if you don't remember a rule. If you players enjoy themselves, you have already won!
I don't know any site specifically. On YT, there are a lot of videos explaining classes in a nutshell.
This is a bit older, but it still does the trick: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1047-d-d-101-a-quick-breakdown-of-classes-in-dungeons
So do all forms of damage actually take away from health or not
Yes unless the monster/pc had resistance or immunity to that damage type
Ok thank you also for vicious mockery how many times can you cast it
It's a cantrip, so you can cast it as many times as you want. In battle, though, it takes an action, so you'll likely only be able to cast it once per turn.
Ok and as the player do you actually have to make an insult to use it
Nope.
Ok thank you
Hi I haven't played d&d before and want to start playing it, I already created my character online. What do I do next? I heard there are websites to play d&d, could anyone show me the ropes?

We have lots of people joining the server every day, so one-on-one teaching really isn't feasible. But the links above should help, especially #learn-to-play. If you have more specific questions, do feel free to ask!
Oh alright thank you
It can be hard just because there are so many people who want to play, so the search can take a while. So long as you're transparent that you're new, I doubt any group that would bring you to the table would have a problem with it.
That said, not every group is open to newbies, but I suspect many are!
#looking-for-dm , I think this is what I do, I am new and asking for help, what do I do in the discussion
The command begins with a /. So if you type /looking-for-dm, you'll be prompted with a form to fill out, which will then post in the appropriate channel.
No but you can ask for the player to make an inslult if they so desire
Did the form work
Yep, you can see your post here: #looking-for-dm message
Hello everyone I'm very new to dnd and I had a idea for a character but idk how to build one is there a step by step guild to help me? I want to be a support/healing character, thank you in advance for the help 😊
The rules describe the character-creation process: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
Thank you!
hey! i'm from brazil (UTC-3) and looking for a chill group to play some TTRPGs in english (any system’s cool). i’m free most afternoons & nights. Down for campaigns or one-shots.
just dm me if u got a spot 🙂

Hi I'm planning on creating game for my cousins but I don't know where to start and I don't have any idea for the lore. Any suggestions what should I do?
Are you against the idea of running pre-written adventures? I have heard that those are better for newbie DMs.
Start small. Focus on what matters for what they're about to play.
Where do they start? What's the problem? What are a few places nearby that they might need to visit?
You can always build on the lore as the game progresses. You don't need the entire world and its history mapped out in detail from the start.
Hello, I'm new to the game of DnD but know of it. I'm a writer and very passionate about the stories I write and the history of the world I'm building and I'm looking for someone passionate about lore and mechanics who can help me refine my ideas into something more tangible. If you're a passionate nerd and want to talk about history and lore and help a girl realize her imagination then feel free to contact me.
My PMs are open if you want to message me.
We've got channels for that! Check out #character-discussion, #dnd-lore, or #dm-world-building.
I appreciate it, should I just repost there? I'm not looking for open discussion more of a private tutor.
You could try. If anyone's gonna take up the offer, they're the most likely ones.
Hey, I'm really new to dnd, I've got the dnd beyond app, seen some vids on how to play and got the players handbook and dm book although I've not done any real sessions before. What's a good time to know when I'm ready to try one?
I don't think there's a right answer. This is a complex game so it's easy for someone not to understand everything immediately.
Ah fair, I know the base mechanics but I guess I don't know until I try
I know I didn't get the rules even after I've gone through a few sessions. Then again maybe I would have less of a hard time if I'd been given the tools that this server offers.

- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.

If you're a new player playing with other new players, getting going, guessing at rules as they come up, and then checking after a session is the way forward.
Characters are somewhat limited in what they can do at level 1 & 2, so an A4 page of "how to attack, how to skill check" really covers 85% of what you need to know.
^
I'm currently in my first thing so I might be wrong with this but it's probably good to memorise all of the main features (spell types attack rols ect) and everything that your character can do
You dknt need to know all the lore if you dknt want to. Your not expected to know everything
Hello
Hewo
How we doing?
Thanks, that helps ease the tension of starting, I know I'm not expected to be perfect but i appreciate the planning tips!
Thanks! I'll keep that in mind and add it on a prep page for a reminder!
Do a lot of new players lose common sense when playing for the first time because my players tried breaking in rather than just trying the door
I don't think anyone can really answer that as every table and group is different.
But many folks find it fun to have their characters try and do things they can't/won't do in real life.
Ok thanks
A good session zero prevents allot of issue
Session zero: is when a dm helps build characters. Get to know the players, lay down the rules and expectations. Go over themes and content warnings if applicable
Hey i need help so I'm trying to make a tabaxi maine coon rogue but I'm unsure on how tabaxi works and this will be my second time playing the game so i would like some info
what do u need to know?
well maine coons are taller than normal tabaxis and i don't know tabaxi height and i barely know what i should go into with the stats for the rogue since last i played warlock
It looks like you don't have your Discord account connected to your D&D Beyond account!
Linking your account means that you'll be able to use everything you own on D&D Beyond in Avrae for free - you can link your accounts here.
You will need to work with your DM. Tabaxi can be a decent range of heights, but many DMs will likely let you "skin" it as a tall maine coon. As for rogue, dex is primary, then probably charisma and wisdom. Con helps ALL classes.
i have an account yet but i'm not in a good spot to spend it for the stuff i want but yeah might as well talk to my DM but they're busy at the moment so thought i might go to others for help but thank you this'll help
im new to dnd and really there are a lot of barriers to entry, but i feel like giving it a try, so where do i start?
evenin sasha
I dont think there are too many barriers, the internet has made it so much easier to play. There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Welcome! #learn-to-play also has a bunch of great info to get you started.
the barriers im mainly talking about are finding a party, one thats at least willing to teach someone from scratch (maybe a oneshot?) which is kind of hard to find people nearer to my age group (like 16-20) and agreeing on times and performance anxiety, i live with others so voice acting a character feels akward and i feel kind of intimidated by the scale of the game
Curse of Strahd is the one with vampires right
Yes
Just making sure before making my character
Whats your character going to be
the looking for groups on here are pretty good and you can post what you want and a DM may "come to you", as for voice acting, that is (usually) NOT necessary. Most of my players across 5 groups don't use voices
most will work with new players, so that shouldnt be too much of a problem. I see many folks posting for teen aged groups.
and the scale is only as large as you need it to be to play your character and the DM presents to you at that moment.
Prolly a Dhampir honestly, was considering inspiration from the marvel character Blade
Considering HB Warlock maybe
So correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there a species in the old version called apefolk
I am not familiar with apefolk and I have been playing since 2nd ed. but that doesnt mean there wasn't a homebrew or something from a very specific setting
It may have been some skyrim lore I remember but sounded like dnd
is it better to look for a dm or find a dm looking for players?
You’ll probably have better luck responding to DMs in #looking-for-players than waiting for DMs to find you in #looking-for-dm.
both. Cover all sides. Post in looking for a DM so they see what you want, but scroll through the looking for game channels too so u can see if you see one that sounds good to ya
So I looked up apefolk dnd and they do exist apparently
In homebrew but have gained some traction
Yeah, you can find basically anything in homebrew.
I was going to say, I am sure many have homebrewed them, but make sure your DM is cool with that
I'm actually the DM and was thinking of a gorilla grodd type bbeg
ahhhh got ya!!!
Which led me to looking at other DC villains and scarecrow and joker would be pretty fun in a fantasy setting but I'm not sure how I would class them
i think creating incantations for spells that require a verbal component and roleplaying it would be cool -w-
If you want Gorilla Grodd, just take any monster with psychic powers and then describe it as a gorilla instead.
What about Joker I feel like he'd be a bard
Monsters / NPCs don’t typically use player classes.
The PHB has a suggested method for doing that:
If you’d like to say a spell’s Verbal component, you may make up the words. However you make them, the goal is to create something that’s easy to say and that doesn’t mean anything in the real world. Consider this method: take the name of the spell, keep only one instance of each of its letters, and rearrange the remaining letters into words. For example, remove the second l from Fireball and rearrange the remaining letters to create Ber Fila or Fel Bira.
i feel they could've named that channel better
but from what i gather 5e's just taken over
yeah lol
lol
I do see posts for DMs looking to run 3.5 but VERY RARELY
whats the free "loot" looking like nowadays? is the whole rulebook outthere in pdf form somewhere for 5e
So what famous villains do you guys think would be awesome in a fantasy setting
Free rules are linked to in the pinned messages here in the channel.
Definitely lex luthor I imagine his suit is some sort of armor golem
Or Dr octopus using cthulhu's powers and channeling some remnant of his energy
new to server and probably missed it, but why can’t i post anything in the looking for dm chat? also hi
#find-a-game follow the instructions here my friend. super easy to access once u do 🙂
Read #find-a-game carefully - it explains the bot commands (starts with /looking-for - use in any channel you can type)
So when am I allowed to interrogate a enemy do they have to be a certain health or can I make a move to do it at any time
id like to add to that
as a cleric i envision incantations as a prayer, and taking the cast time of a spell create something that could reasonably be said within that timeframe
Me bored need group
certain spells are done as "rituals" these dont use spell slots if used outside of combat and can very well be done as prayer etc etc. i also play a cleric in a campaign im a player in, the spell slots will be used for the same spell if your wanting to cast it faster without all the pomp during combat etc. technically you could do a ritual casting during combat but that would annoy people in ya party as 1 minute is 10 rounds of combat and by then combat will most likely be over.
Check the Looking For Game channels ( #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community) and see #find-a-game for more information on how our Looking For Game channelswork.
Thanks a lot
Roll intimidation it’s up to you when they give up
Or not
Npcs only not pc
Ok
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Does anyone know if vampires can affect all creatures like lycanthropy
Mechanically vampirism can only affect humanoids.
Which is also the same for lycanthropy- only creatures of the humanoid type
So how do you get wererats and things like that
The simplest answer is because the D&D game designers made it so... 🙂
There really isn't anything much deeper than that although you can think of it as like there are different strains of lycanthropy curse
That kinda depends on the DM and the enemy you're fighting. A DM might feel like certain enemies cannot be negotiated with. This isn't Undertale though. You can't achieve peace or interrogate the enemy after fighting them for a few turns.
That's just some "game logic"
the NPC statblocks of wererats (now) are Monstrosity types. (They used to remain humanoid type before the 2024 revisions)
Either way, the bites of Were-creatures only transmit the curse to Humanoid type creatures.
Does anyone have a game running I could be an npc in to sit in and watch how some of the game plays out?
Hi! I’m someone who heard about dnd and I was interested in playing it, I was given some papers to create a character however I don’t understand most of it and I’m wondering if anyone here can explain how to create my character
I’m pretty new myself and have a character sheet infront of me but I don’t know a lot about the game. If your happy to learn with someone else I’d be eager for someone else to delve into this with
There’s tons of games on Twitch and YouTube, available on demand.
What have you got so far? Where exactly are you stuck?
Chapter 2 of the Basic Rules does a good job of walking through all the steps:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
I’m glad I’m not the only one thats new dnd here! I’d be happy to learn more about the game with you!
I’ve gotten my class, level, race, and alignment. However I’m confused about the stats how do they work? I chose the base numbers however there’s some things to check off next to them like saving throws and deception are some there and I’m unsure of what to do on that part?
I’m I supposed to put a x next to those? And how will it affect the character?
Oh ok, I’ll check it out. Thank you for the help
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Once you’ve got the actual scores, you’ll especially need your ability modifiers: that last link there.
Ok, thank you so much for the help!
Then for both saving throws and skills, each one will be tied to one of your abilities.
Your Strength saving throw and Strength (Athletics) checks would both use your Strength modifier.
If you have a +3 Strength, then you’d put that same +3 for Strength saves and Athletics checks.
For any saving throws or skills that you’re proficient in (the ones where you mark that “x”), you’ll add your proficiency bonus as well.
?tag new proficiency
Proficiency
All creatures have a Proficiency Bonus, which reflects the impact their training has on the creature’s capabilities. The Proficiency Bonus table shows your Proficiency Bonus, which is +2 for a level 1 character.
This bonus is applied to a D20 Test when the creature has proficiency in a skill, in a saving throw, or with an item that the creature uses to make the D20 Test. The bonus is also used for spell attacks and for calculating the DC of saving throws for spells.
Your Proficiency Bonus can’t be added to a die roll or another number more than once. Occasionally, a Proficiency Bonus might be multiplied or divided (doubled or halved, for example) before being added.
So assuming you’re a level 1 character, if you’re proficient in Strength saves, then you’d also add your +2 proficiency bonus.
So that +3 Strength modifier and +2 proficiency bonus would give you a total +5 for Strength saving throws.

how can i find people in person, is there some kind of like dnd app to find people in my area
You can check your local library, game store, book stores, or even community centers and see if someone is running games in your local area.
There isn't really a central "find any D&D game in your local area" kind of thing
Ahh ok so i actually have to go and look for it then awesome
Yeah
Dont i have to buy dnd boards and extra pieces too?
Nope. All you need to start playing is:
- The free D&D rules (see embed post - has a link to the online free rules)
- Dice (d20, d12, d10 and d100, d8, d6, and a d4 - or can use online dice rolling tool or a dice app)
- Character sheets (again see info in embed post) for the player characters
- A group of folks wanting to play (1 Dungeon Master and 3-6 players typically)
Everything else is extra and not required to play
I'd recommend the starter set or essential items pack
Do vampires take damage from holy symbols
Hi everyone I’m very new to dnd but ever since playing bg3 and watching some of critical role ive been wanting to try playing in person. I was just wondering what the best ways to do that are and what I should expect/need to get ready
Everyone's different, so it's impossible to say which way is best. That said, here are some options:
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.) Don't expect your home game to look like a professional production, though!
- Or play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the Free Rules.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the videos are for the 2014 rules. The fundamentals are pretty much the same between 2014 and 2024 rulesets, though.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
As for what you need: dice (which can be digital and free), a character sheet (free, digital or physical), the rules (free), friends, and a means of communicating.
Thank you for the help! Do you think it is a much lesser experience playing online vs in person bc I would prefer to play in person but don’t know anyone who would want to bc they just wouldn’t be into it or wouldn’t want to bc of the perception of playing dnd. And if it is easier to play online how would you go about that? Once again thanks for the help
I don't think it's lesser; it's just different. We have channels for connecting groups on the server, starting with #find-a-game. The postings tend to be for online games.
This article gives a good overview of online play.

Thank you again I will definitely give that a try! One last question if I already have a character I’d like to create and play as in mind how free am I to be able to go in the direction I’d want to
You build your character using the races and classes in The rules
How well that fits your concept is another thing
What did you have in mind?
So it’s similar to what I used in my bg3 playthrough and it’s probably a little on the broken side but I really liked playing as it. It’s a bard paladin multiclass but heavy on the thieving and stealth portions because of the background I made for him. Idk if that’s like too much for a first play through but it was fun to play in bg3 and I feel like if I could act it out more it’d be better lol
Should be doable
Nice glad to hear that just didn’t want to seem like I was making a broken as possible character for a first run. Thanks for the help and do you have any like tips or advice for a newer player 😁
- You don’t need to have all the answers, but you should know where to find them. Make sure you’re familiar with the Basic Rules and their layout, especially the Playing the Game, Spells, and Rules Glossary sections.
- Make sure you understand your characters own abilities and the basics of combat.
- If you’re not sure what to do next, focus on intent. “I see Bob’s surrounded. How can I help?” Once your group knows what your goal is, they can help you get there.
Thank you so much you’ve been great!

So how do you figure price discounts if the player made a charisma check on a shop keeper
That’s up to you as the DM to determine:
- If the player’s intended action is possible
- If the player’s intended action requires a check, and if so using what skill
- What the result of that check is
It’s important to keep in mind that charisma is not mind control; some shop keepers may not be haggled with, some may refuse sale, etc. A discount will only happen if you as the DM determine it to occur
So if I as the dm allowed it can happen and then what would be a good way because I don't want to give them to much of a discount
I have a DM that does it like this:
both sides makes an opposed Charisma (Persuasion) Check. if the seller gets a higher number, the price goes up in percent equal to the difference, if the buyer gets a higher roll, the price goes down equal to the difference
There’s many ways to do it. You’re in control of the discount, if any, that occurs. If you don’t want it to be a lot, simply set the discount at a low percentage.
Omegon’s method is one way. You could have a Charisma (Persuasion or Intimidation depending on what the player states they want to do) check vs. a set DC. Etc
hi I'm a new DM from Malaysia and I've encountered one problem. I feel like my sessions are boring. How do I spice things up and how do I make the game feel more interactive
This would be a better conversation for #dm-discussion!
thank you
hello, i sifted through some of the ''looking for players'' news, but will post these while i keep looking: If anyone is running a beginner friendly (first time) one-shot campaign, please ping me, i'd love to join
Mods ask you keep looking for group/game requests to the proper channels.
is this not the newcommer channel? Where should I post this?
In #looking-for-dm. Anywhere else is off-topic.
unless i click your link I can't access / see that channel.
Or once you're in the channel, you should see an option at the top to add it to your channel list.
Ok added it, not sure how to post in it, but will figure it out, thanks
#find-a-game has the info for how to post!
You're great, thank you!

yo, pretty serious question about dnd for any dm that wants to answer, has any of your players asked to do a cinematic finisher cause the enemy had low enough health that any attack they did would kill it, if they have, did you let them? and if not, why not?
i'm mainly asking because i have a lot of creative ideas and wanna know if it would be possible
does anyone have any tips???
first time making a character, someone said these stats were kinda concerning, so idk what to do cause it's my first time making a character!!
#dnd-arts-and-crafts message
Have you looked at the free rules yet?
Quite frankly almost your entire sheet seems to follow some sort of custom creation rather than the layout provided by the Free Rules
Noo,,, idk the basic stat layout, I just went off by random numbers
Hi,i’m new
Just as a reminder to check everything:
- Your stats seems to be rolled. I suggest using standard array or Point Buy. You are also missing your ability modifiers.
- Your saving throw modifiers are missing for con & wisdom, and are inaccurate for the rest of the stats
- Your skill proficiencies lack modifiers, and the amount doesn’t seem to match your background + species + class
- You are missing your choice of species
- Dancer is not an official background
- Your AC is incorrect. Though it’ll likely change once you put in correct stats, if you’re not wearing armor your AC is 10 + Dex mod (so 8 given your current stats)
- Your HP is incorrect. It should be a max roll of a Bard’s hit die + Con mod at level 1. You should have no Temp HP unless you have a listed source for them
- You are missing current HP & hit die information
- You are missing initiative, speed, and vision information
- “Haunting” and “Persuasion” are not attacks
- The features and traits section is missing the 1st level Bard features & species features
- The other proficiencies section is missing proficiencies and languages gained from your class, background, and species
- Your equipment section is missing the starting equipment given by your class and background. Dagger is missing key information and does not do “10 damage”. “Drink” is not an official item nor is “+5 energy” a game term.
- You are missing the spells section of your sheet
Overall I’d read the Free Rules and make sure you’re sticking to them

Hi I am new, I played a one shot a few years back and about to play another with some friends soon, i created one on dnd beyond just don't understand the plus on strength, charisma and such stats. Example i have 15 on strength with +2, when and how that works
Strength is a little special in that the raw score (15) will determine things like your long/high jump, carrying capacity, and lift/pull/push capacity.
The modifier (+2) will factor into the bonus that gets added to any d20 Test that requires Strength. Most commonly this will be for weapon attacks using Strength-based weapons (e.g. the longsword), but it can also come up if you have to make a Strength Saving Throw or Strength (Athletics) skill check
Hey i was wandering where can u learn about dnd relms like the abyss or the nine hells ext is it in one of the books?
That will depend on what setting your game is in. Most 5e content so far largely focuses on the Forgotten Realms, so if you wanted a starting point I’d check out the FR wiki:
Cool thx
Hey! Question, for my new character Raglaine, he has the antimatter cannon,
(a weapon found on DnD Beyond), is there a strength specific for using it cos his strength is 8.
Be aware that it's unlikely a DM would let you just have an antimatter cannon
But unless the weapon is Heavy or specifically lists a strength requirement, there isn't one in 2024 rules
On dnd beyond, would it be better to or just buy hex-blade, or homebrew the entire sub-class to save myself the money?
Could you link the weapon you’re talking about? There is no official antimatter cannon as far as I’m aware, but there is an antimatter rifle. Assuming your DM allowed you to have it, any special requirements will be listed in the items description
If you have a physical copy of the book available or bought it on a 3rd party site like roll20 and want to import it into D&DBeyond the official advice is to use the site’s homebrew creator. Unfortunately buying content piecemeal is no longer an option so if you wanted Hexblade you’d have to buy the entire book it came from
I’m proud party I got from here just finished part 1 of my game. Question though where can I post videos?
You can share your stream/channel in #dnd-advertisements - make sure to follow server and the channel specific rules to post there
I just decided to Homebrew the entire subclass, I can see now that I made the right choice, thx.

Welcome! Chapter 2 of the Basic Rules does a good job of walking through the steps for creating a character.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
You can do it online with sites like D&D Beyond.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
Or print out a blank sheet if you want to do it by hand.
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/br/ph/character-sheet.pdf
If you’ve got questions about those steps, folks in here are happy to answer.
Hey so I'm a new dnd player and I'm about to run my first one shot, and I just wanted to make sure that my one shot idea was good so hear it is, my players will be detectives and hired help there next client will ask them to hunt down and retrieve the ring however this ring is currently being held by a mafia so now the players need to take down the head of the mafia to get the ring
Or if you want help specific to your character, #character-discussion can offer some advice.
Sounds fun! Do you have clues lines up to lead them to that mafia?
Not really I just thought of the idea
I wanted to make sure it was interesting before working out those details
Thank you! I have made one! Thank you so very much for the help!
the game i was in kinda exploded and I dunno what to with the character that didn't get thier ending
File them away for another game and roll up a new one?
I kinda want my charcter to get thier full story done
this is the first game since 2020 and it failed
You can bring them to a new game, but you'd be starting from the beginning. Their story would look different the second time around, obviously.
Hello chat, I'm completely new to D&D. My friends and I have wanted to give it a try and have already made a somewhat decent Campaign. They all voted for me as the Dungeon master and Ion know nothing about being the dm, any tips for newcomers?
Ginny Di's latest video is perfect for folks like you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCKO6LuXYWE
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

is there anywhere i can get a new game where people won't constantly ghost me?
if im new i can play Fallen Aasimar? right i didnt see it in DnD beyond website when trying make charater
You need the sourcebook for it, as its not one of the free races
if i can find group wont the DM have all that?
Technically Fallen Aasimar only exists in Volo’s Guide to Monsters, which is no longer for sale.
i used chatGDP to make my charater sheet and skills etc based on what i wanted to do
Hello good people
But Monsters of the Multiverse and the 2024 Player’s Handbook also have versions of Aasimar that provide similar benefits in a slightly different way.
But in any case, you’d need to own the book that contains the one you want to use, or have your character assigned to a campaign where that book is shared with you.
I was wondering like if i could find a campaign to join, i never played D&D like flat out before just like Homebrew, and i really want to find a game to join AabviabivbA
Im not sure where to find a campaign tho
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here.
#learn-to-play has some advice for finding games as well.
Lay on Hands:
Divine Smite:
Aura of Protection:
Aura of Courage:
Aura of Conquest:
Extra Attack
Divine Health
Necrotic Shroud
o Wrathful Smite
o Armor of Agathys
o Hold Person
o Spiritual Weapon
o Bestow Curse
o Fear
does normal aasimar use shroud?
i see so i need to own the book okay
The other versions of Aasimar both have a trait called Celestial Revelation.
Necrotic Shroud (formerly from Fallen Aasimar) is one of the choices for that.
okay cool bc im using fear based engine, guess it will work then
Idk if this is the right place to ask this but is there any campaign I could join? I have a character sheet made and im looking too play in my first campaign

Hi
I am new to the game and in My journey for making my first character and I am looking for someone who can help me with it because my dm doesn't have much time for it
What do you need help with?
I think me and him did most of the work it just needs a few things
I'll send my character sheet
Those are some real good ability scores for level 1. 👀
For the saving throws and skills that you’re still missing, you can write down the modifier for that ability.
Aren't they measured by my modifier+proficiency modifier?
Not the scores themselves, no.
This was what my dm gave me
thats your bonus. determined by the skills plus prof if proficient
oh i see. powerful game
Back to the saving throws and skills, though…
Acrobatics, Sleight of Hand, and Stealth will all use your +3 Dexterity modifier, for example.
Your Constitution saving throw will use your +5 Constitution modifier.
Wdym
Ok so I should not add the modifier
They’re still referring to your higher-than-average ability scores.
I’m saying you should add the modifier for those.
You’ve currently left those blank.
everything gets the modifier. if youre proficient you also add a level-scaling bonus
Oh didn't know that thank you
Every one of those should include the modifier for that ability.
The ones you’re proficient in (the ones where you have that checkmark) should also include your +2 Proficiency Bonus.
So your Dexterity saving throws should actually be +5.
From your +3 Dexterity modifier and your +2 Proficiency Bonus.
Done
I see your Initiative says “don’t put anything here at all”…
But Initiative is a Dexterity check, so that would also use your Dexterity modifier.
So you’d normally have a +3 there.
I don’t know why it says what it currently does. 😅
I actually got 7 on one of those stats but he said that his rule is 11 or below that should be rerolled
I don't know he just wrote that
Your Passive Perception should be 10 + whatever you’d add for a Perception check.
If you check Perception, it should now say +2, correct?
So Passive Perception would be 10+2 = 12.
Sorry what is a perception check
A Wisdom (Perception) check is an ability check made to examine your surrounding and see what you notice.
Using a combination of senses, notice something that’s easy to miss.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Skills
You should see it there on the left under Wisdom.
.
Cool
Now in the bottom left where it says “Equipment & Training Proficiencies”, that would normally say “Equipment Training & Proficiencies” instead.
Under Weapons, you should replace that with “Simple Weapons” and “Martial Weapons that have the Light property”.
Done
And neither Monks nor Humans have any kind of Armor Training, so those boxes should all be unchecked.
Oh ok I thought that was talking about weopns also
Nah, but speaking of weapons…
Done
Quarterstaffs are simple melee weapons.
So to make an attack, you’d normally add your Strength modifier.
When you’re proficient with a weapon (and you’re proficient with all simple weapons), you add your proficiency bonus as well.
If you check your monk’s Martial Arts feature, though, you’ll find that it also counts as a Monk Weapon.
So you can use either your Strength or Dexterity modifier.
So it should be 6?
Yeah I know that
But my dm was the one who said put 2
I don’t know why they said that.
You can ask them for clarification first if you like.
Ok
You’d normally add that ability modifier to the damage as well.
Now that I’m looking at your ability scores again, though…
If I was you, I’d shuffle those around.
I’d make Dex highest, then Wis, then Con.
Your weapon attacks will stay the same (since you can use Dex instead of Str).
Your max HP would drop slightly…
But you’d get a big boost to your AC.
I thought about that but thought it would be cool being a tank + it relates to the backstory I have in my head
If you want to be a tanky monk, you want that high AC.
Oh ok
The higher that is, the harder it is for enemies to hit you.
(And fewer hits means you can afford that slight drop to your max HP.)
So dex 20 con16 ?
Can you tell me what should I switch with what exactly?
Yeah, and 18 WIS.
12 for everything else.
That’ll bump your AC from 15 to 19, making you 20% harder to hit.
But won't my damage be lowered alot
Dex makes you do more damage, not less.
Oh since I can use dex instead of str in hitting
@smoky adder
@smoky adder
What will my health be after my cons being 14
whats your class
Monk
1
so
It was 12 when my cons was 20
its your hit die (1d8) + con modifier (14=+2) for a total of 8+2
lvl 1 get max of their hit die
so 1d12 hit die at lvl 1 means 12
So it will be 10
@graceful perch @lost temple @smoky adder thank you all everything you have suggested was done

How much spels a level 3 Wizard can have in his spellbook ?
I know its 3 cantrip and 6 prepered spells but how much in the spell book can he know
You'll likely have something like 10 spells in the book, but the exact number depends on the subclass the wizard picked.
And if they found spells as loot.
Technically wizards can have all wizard spells in their book but if you are just building the character, I believe the spell section explains it. It says at first you get X number of spells and then you get Y number of spells each time you level (don’t have eat access to the books at work to give exact wording sorry). But as wizards find other sources such as scrolls or other wizards spell books, they can transfer those spells into their spell book which is how in the long run you technically could have every wizard spell lol
so uh.... lowkey I'm VERY new but i want to play with my friends so I'd have to be the dm cause I know more about it than them (I'm smart) but I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IM DOING does anyone have any tips :) (sorry about the name)
Nice! DMing rules and it can be a lot of fun, albeit intimidating in the beginning. Luckily there are lots of guides around. I can personally recommend this one by Matt Colville: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_

Hey can players go past lvl 20
Kind of. There are no levels past 20, but a DM may choose to give out additional feats past that point.
I’m looking into starting a campaign with my wife and two other friends. I’m currently in a campaign, but have only played 5 sessions total. I’m wanting to DM. None of my friends have played before, so what are some good sources to get started? Wanting to do a oneshot to see if everybody enjoys it. Also doing it in person so I’d also need help knowing what we would need to get it going. Thanks!
Peril in Pinebrook is a free starter adventure. You could run it as it is or spice it up some if you feel confident doing so. I'd suggest you grab a sheaf of premade characters and just try giving it a go.

Awesome thank you. Would I need to get a rulebook too? Obviously dice for everybody as well.
I suggest using the free rules first and then if folks like the game enough, consider in investing in the core rulebooks like the Players Handbook
Free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
The free rules is good enough to star and a starter adventure since it will come with almsot everything you need
Do I need purchase player handbook digital on dnd website? Or is free edition offered on dnd beyond fine what's difference. I do see more sub classes like oath of ancients and vengeance
Reading the above you said free
Start with the free rules, and if you like the game enough, consider in investing in the core rulebooks like the Players Handbook
Yep start with the free stuff first
I bought monsters of multiverse bundle on dnd website today lol didn't know about handbook
Well atleast I can use necotic shroud aasimar now
Paladin
So is vengeance a better pair for aasimar necrotic shroud than devotion? I don't mind buying handbook if I wanna invest into this hobby , I wanted conquest but that's to much
Vengeance is fun to play - I think you might enjoy it.
Alright thanks
i already have the dudgeon masters guide and the players handbook as physical copies, but i dont know how to find the code in the books to put into dnd beyond to get the digital copies
There isn't
There is no way to unlock digital content that way
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a D&D Beyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond (Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way; it is for personal use only)
You need buy bundle on website to get 20$ discount dropping digital price to 10$
Normal price for digital copy is 30$ it seems
I just purchased a bundle so that's why i know it came out to 66$ with shipping
i should prob get new books anyway, the books i have are 5.0e
The 2014 materials work with the newer 2024 materials - the 2024 updates were designed that way
Would it be better to start at level 1 or 3 for this beginner oneshot?
I'd start at level 1 as that will help folks get to grips with their character without being overwhelmed with options.
But you know your players best - they may enjoy and thrive with more options.
First time they’ve ever played, so level 1 would probably be best to get an understanding of the game
You come up with your own rule or thing or species or class or spell (or whatever it is that does not officially exist in the game rules) to use along with the D&D core rules. Folks in #homebrew can assist. It's usually best to first play the agme with the core rules before tinkering with things and making homebrew as it's very easy to create unbalanced homebrew.
?homebrew
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.
Is there difference from normal handbook aasimar and Legacy monster book aaismar? , I notice stuff says legacy does that mean it's out of date? And i can't use it?
They do have different mechanics, yes
So can I use legacy? Or is it best to use most updated version
Legacy options are just from books they're not selling anymore. Whether you can use them will be up to the DM
Because they decide allowed sources
I see okay
If you're just making characters for practice, you can use whatever. But you might want to use the newer options
Just finished reading Peril. This sounds like a great starting oneshot. Is there a part two to continue this campaign?
I can’t find any groups to play dnd in person in my area, East Sussex England, and all that are in the area are quite a far/pricy travel for me, there is a ttrpg cafe opening on the 24th of may which I’m looking forward to going into and asking workers questions etc, but i don’t know how I could get into DnD properly and want to learn everything I need to without the motivation of playing with a group at some point ?
Playing DnD online is very much a thing! Here's a article with some pointers:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
No idea, but this might be useful if you want another adventure: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1943-five-inexpensive-tools-on-d-d-beyond-to-make-dming
Kinda feel if I was going to use Peril as a campaign starter I'd maybe change the ending. Carrying it around would feel like a bit of a weight on the ongoing story of the characters.
@rich root in here!
hello
Howdy
hi
Now to answer your previous question,
Generally, it depends on the group
If you're joining with someone who's there to teach you the game then yes generally you'll be given a character sheet, occasionally pre filled out as well
This can be the case wether your DM is newer or seasoned
Alternatively, you can also bring your own, either filled out yourself or with help, or pre filled out from something you found online
What actions you can take in and out of combat, theres cheatsheets for these you can find online.
Some plot ideas the DM might give, so if youre making a character you can shape it slightly around that to be more integrated? or at least the nature of the campaign, are you all evil? are you all religious? etc
i see
Yes, but too much for me to discuss at 4 in the morning, id recommend ginny dis beginner player playlist, or her beginner dm playlist, if you'd prefer
Though if you're s player definitely her beginner player playlist, not necessarily all the videos just, things you may find important

I'm running a weekly session with four other online friends. It's my first time as DM and I've only been playing for about six months. We were playing only via Discord until I asked to DM. I moved us all to Owlbear VTT and started us off with A Most Potent Brew. Any suggestions on a good follow up campaign for my newly level 2 adventurers and their novice DM?
I see. But my problem isnt about basic stuff like how to create your character, I want to know about stuff about the game. For instance, skill checks, how can I learn about skills and etc, how things works and rules
Sure thing. There is a link there to the free rules that describe all of that. I'll separate it out: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024

Thanks
This section is about tests in general: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#D20Tests
And skills and their potential uses are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#SkillProficiencies
Note that you won't see the term "skill check" in the rules.
Officially, it's an ability check.
Proficiency in a skill allows you to add your proficiency bonus to an ability check that uses that skill.
If your DM asks for a Dexterity (Stealth) check, for example, you're making a Dexterity check -- an ability check that adds your Dexterity modifier to the roll. If you're proficient with Stealth, you'd also add your proficiency bonus to that roll.
When you say campaign, do you mean a single adventure like "A Most Potent Brew" or a campaign that encompasses multiple levels and weeks/months/years(!) of play?
I guess Brew is the first adventure in my (hopefully) long running campaign. If I have the terminology right.
We're probably veering into #dm-discussion territory, but just so you're not left hanging:
An adventure is like an season of TV, whereas a campaign is the entire series. A session is one episode. Loosely, multiple sessions make up an adventure, and multiple adventures make up a campaign. The thing about adventures like AMPB is they can be dragged and dropped into any setting. The Starter Set adventures are made for new DMs and players, so I'd give those a look first.
Thanks. I'll move it to there.
is there a link to premade character sheets for all classes? We're playing on tabletop, so I want something people can write on
You can find every free class here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
You can also search DMsGuild for free pregen or premade characters.
There's some paper ones here as well:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/resources/1779-d-d-character-sheets
Once you claim the digital characters, you can export them as a PDF, print, and then scribble as you like!
awesome thanks. I'm so excited, but man is it overwhelming starting out
It is a lot to take in, but if you and your group can grasp D&D—and I believe you can and will!—then lots of other games are easier by comparison.
I've played dnd with another campaign for a couple of months now, but I'm starting a new group with brand new players, and I've never dmed before. Just trying to find the most simple character sheets so they're not overwhelmed right off the bat.
You saw the simplified character sheets at the end of Peril in Pinebrook?
yes I did. I want character sheets for every class so they can do some research before, and then continue that character into the campaign
So you can take the premades from the links above for the other classes and then just boil them down to the simple character sheet. You can find designs for simplified/basic character sheets elsewhere online!
I'll actually stick with those. I found a volume 2 for pinebrook that has four more. So 8/12 are available
Pine brook has a volume 2??
just additional character sheets. no story stuff
All 12 are available. The base adventure has fighter/cleric/wizard/rogue. This supplement (https://www.dmsguild.com/product/472210/Pinebrook-Characters-Volume-1) has barbarian/druid/monk/warlock. And this one (https://www.dmsguild.com/product/472219/Pinebrook-Characters-Volume-2) has bard/paladin/ranger/sorcerer.
has bard, paladin, ranger, and sorcerer
that's very helpful then, all 12 classes. Thank you very much
Does someone have the time to help me make a character
Go to character discussion you'll get more help there
I have an idea bc I play DND spin off but never actual dnd
Chapter 2 of the Basic Rules does a good job of covering the steps for character creation.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
To build a character:
- class
- species
- background
Fill in ability scores with the standard array, then apply modifiers as granted. Pick proficiencies, equipment, spells if applicable. It's all in the free rules linked above.
Building your character on a site like D&D Beyond also helps with a lot of the heavy lifting.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
I would like someone present so I don't make a mistake
Or you can just download a blank character sheet if you prefer to do it by hand.
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/br/ph/character-sheet.pdf
If you're using a site like D&D Beyond, it'll be hard to make a mistake.
Why not have a look at the classes first and see what you like?
Did you already have a character concept in mind?
What do you mean by "DND spin"?
Heya 👋
Well a DND inspired game a simple version
Okay, pretend we're just making a level one character for now. Look at rogue, monk and ranger, see which you like the sound of the most.
There's no ass(assin?) or hunter classes in fifth edition D&D.
Assassin is one of the available rogue subclasses, yeah.
Cool cool
So typically characters start at level 1, unless your DM has said otherwise.
So like Mr Smith said above, you'd have to pick just one of those to start with.
Any preference?
Anything you all recommend to get as a dm? I’m going to use a laptop to read the script and I have dice ordered. Any specific screens to block my stuff that are helpful?
If you're using a laptop, you don't need a DM screen, but anything you can use to hide notes/dice and add a cheat sheet for yourself can be handy.
A gridded battlemat can be useful, depending on how you handle combat. Any small object can be used in place of miniatures.
So when my players level up what happens exactly
They gain new features according to their class and more HP. Their stats may increase, too, but that's only at specific points in the level progression.
Ok thank you
Chapter 2 in the Basic Rules details the steps for level advancement:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#LevelAdvancement
i have created a lvl 8 with no clue of wat games are open
It's all practice until you find a table. You could share what you came up with in #character-discussion if you'd like someone to give it a look-over.
Hi I’m new
hello!
Hi
Hey dog
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Okay will do
I did it
Question for Roleplay.
Playing Dwarven Paladin, most likely going to be Oath of the Crown.
Campaign was revealed to be Keys of the Golden Vault (stealing Murkwaterstone from Museum).
I am unsure on how to play someone as law abiding as OotC Paladin with the Party stealing stuff (Rouge especially)
It's my First ever Campaign
Woah what does that mean (I have no knowledge over this)
Paladins don't have to be lawful, though Order of the Crown is more on that side than some I suppose
But if your oath is to something like say, the Golden Vault group, you'd be inclined to follow their orders
A suggestion: make a character who wants to go on the adventure.
That's probably a better question for #character-discussion . But here's a simple answer that might help before your check out with them:
You've got to put a spin on it. A paladin who is fighting for the greater good, but is forced to perform some devious acts in order to achieve it, for example.
Since Crown paladins tend to give their oaths to goverments or organizations rather than an ideal
Also, yeah, if you can't think of a reason why your Crown paladin would go on heists, you may want to consider a different character. But I've found it's usually possible to make it work.
Hi :3
To learn how D&D work, would you recommend jumping into playing or focusing on learning the theory?
That depends. Are you hoping to join a table of strangers online (or even in person)? Focus on learning what you can prior. If you're learning with friends, though, jump in and stumble through together!
They could always work for a group of archeologists who happen to love preserving artifacts and drinking tea.
It is possible to learn some things as you go, but you will have a much better experience with the game if you take some time to learn at least the basics of the rules before you start playing. At the very least, you will need a character before the game starts, so learning the rules on Character Creation is basically mandatory. But the more knowledge you are able to bring to the table, the smoother your game will go. If you try to play the game before learning literally anything about the rules, then assuming the other people in your group are more experienced, then they will have to spend the entire game explaining things to you. And if no one in your group is experienced, you’re just going to be lost and confused about what to do. You don’t have to memorize all of the rules beforehand, or anything like that, but if you want you and your group to have fun in your first session, you should put in at least a little effort to make it run smoothly
I just started playing dnd any pointers and how do I make a character sheet (I got my friend to do my first idk how to ask for help)
Welcome! Chapter 2 in the Basic Rules walks through all the steps for character creation.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
But you can start by picking a class, species, and background.
K
Btw thanks
Did you have a character idea in mind already?
Kind of
What is it?
I am thinking like a fighting type
Like a straight-up fighter, a sneaky rogue or someone who attacks at range like a ranger?
Sneaky rogue
Hey, there's a class for that. One down.
How about their background from before they started adventuring and what species they are?
Here's some more on those: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins
Background I want someone with a really bad childhood
Check out the Wayfarer background.
That's in the PHB itself, though, not in the Basic Rules.
Ok will do
Anyone can have that, but the one you pick from the list will give you certain advantages, even the ability to cast some spells. Take a look at the options in the link and see what suits this character best.
You grew up on the streets surrounded by similarly ill-fated castoffs, a few of them friends and a few of them rivals. You slept where you could and did odd jobs for food. At times, when the hunger became unbearable, you resorted to theft. Still, you never lost your pride and never abandoned hope. Fate is not yet finished with you.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/phb-2024/character-origins#Wayfarer
Hello im bout to start first campaign with some friends
Neat!
Ya idk how to make a character
Chapter 2 in the Basic Rules walks through all the steps for character creation.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
But you can start by picking a class, species, and background.
What kind of character did you want?
Hello everyone
Is it alright if I make my own character and send over a PDF of it if I wish to use UA?
Or a different rule set of some kind?
Whether or not you can use the UA rules will be up to the DM
UA is essentially playtest versions
I’m somewhat new to dnd are there any online games played in those servers or somewhere else that does online group games
You can browse through the available games here in #looking-for-players.
The games themselves are played elsewhere.
You can also check out #find-a-game and #learn-to-play for more options.
Awesome thanks man
hi i just joined which site do u use for your characters?
I like using D&D Beyond.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters
thx
You can use whatever you want. Some DMs may have a preference for how their players handle their character sheets, but at the end of the day, character sheets are just a set of notes to help you remember important parts about your character. D&D is not a video game, so you don't have to use any specific interfaces or programs to play. Everything that exists for D&D is just a tool for convenience, not a mandatory part of play
what class should i make i plan to play with you guys?
I generally vote for going with whatever interests you most.
is sorcerer automatically wild magic in this?
No
The free Basic Rules only include one sorcerer subclass (Draconic Sorcery), but there's plenty more available (like Wild Magic).
Classes in the current rules don't select their subclass until level 3.
If you're using D&D Beyond specifically, you'll need to have the 2024 Player's Handbook (or have that book shared with you in your campaign) in order to select Wild Magic.
You'd typically start at level 1 unless your DM tells you otherwise.
kk thx
Games often do start at higher levels (like level 3, when everyone has their subclass), but it's all up to the DM.
The gods depend on the setting. The Forgotten Realms has a bunch: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Portal:Deities
Ultimately your DM would be the best person to ask which gods are featured in your game's setting.
If you need a god now and don't yet have a DM, I'd keep it vague.
yeah i typed none in the creator
"The god of animals" or what have you
i came across several wiki pages
Yeah there are quite a few. I’d ask your DM what setting they’re running and go from there. Some DMs even like to run their own, completely custom setting so whatever pantheon they have might be outside of a wiki
Hey guys, I’m not too sure on my understanding of the game, does anyone have any recommendations for streams or places to watch game play? Preferably a shorter campaign 😅
Feel free to share the sheet either here or in #character-discussion . If you wanted to find a group using this server there’s #find-a-game , but just a fair warning it’s usually little hard to find a game same-day
There are plenty of liveplays on YouTube, I recommend starting your search there.
Shows like Critical Role or Dimension 20 can also be good, but just be warned that shows like that are run & played by entertainment professionals so they won’t represent the average table experience
I think I went really far with making my character considering i have written a total of 2,169 words in the overview document for them y'all think that's too much considering it's one of my first characters as a player and not a DM it contains as much information as i can reasonably put into a document about them and i am willing to share if people want to see it
Whuf!
Have you heard the good word of the Three Sentence Backstory?
Yes however my DM did ask for more than just that
That’s quite a lot for a backstory, though some DMs like it to be that long. Feel free to share it in #character-discussion for feedback.
If you haven’t found a group yet I’d recommend reviewing your document and ask your self 2 essential questions
- Does this answer the 3 fundamental backstory questions? (Aka 3 sentence backstory)
- Is this backstory setting agnostic or built with a lot of specifics?
Ah I see
Keep your notes, of course! But try boiling it down to three sentences. Consider it your character summary on a business card - enough so everyone gets a handle on your character, not so much it overwhelms.
well the overview document doesn't just include just the back story it includes appearance descriptions at the start of the story likes dislikes
important characters other than direct family or adoptive family
If your DM is comfortable with the length & level of detail then there’s no problem
I love getting full stories from my players if that’s what they want but can work with a sentence
although i feel like I went too far 'cause I detailed how she makes ink
Nah, that's detail for fun.
In a random tangent section dedicated to how she styled her spellbook
What platform or format did you use to make your character sheet?
dndbeyond
The character sheet should have a share button at the top right
can i call you?
can someone tell me if theres a game tonight or shoul i wait a few days
Thats not how this server works, you will have to look in #looking-for-players and apply for a game.
how do i applie
The instructions are found in #find-a-game
It will be near the resting section. If you can only convert to PDF then you can upload the document to a trusted file sharing site like Google Drive and send the share link to that
The channel does. It lays out the commands to make a post and respond to others posts
is this like the right channel to ask how do I start playing dnd online?
Simply reply to games in #looking-for-players. DM will post adverts for games/players and you can either DM them or reply in the Thread.
cool, thanks
also, just to make sure I'm not missing anything do I need to prepare with a character sheet or something
That was not for you? but kind of answered your question as well I guess, but this is the newcomers channel so if you have questions fire away.
It would be good to come up with a few loose ideas for characters.
Then once you’ve got a group, you can work together to pick the best fit and add any finishing details.
i got a sorcerer for you
Again if you want feedback feel free to share it here or in #character-discussion
Definitely check out #learn-to-play and this channels pins. Both contain a bunch of newbie resources including a link to the Free Rules.
The more you can do to learn on your own the better your chances of getting into a group. I suggest making a practice character as you go along. Dont feel pressured to memorize everything, but do try to be familiar with character creation, d20 tests, and combat. Of course, we’re always happy to answer any questions along the way
Hello everyone. Can a new player join a campaign in progress?
I asked a friend if i could play with them but he told me only if they start a new one. Is it that he doesn't want me to join or its coversome to introduce a new player to an already started campaign?
Depending on the setting it can be difficult to introduce a new charactar into a long running campaign
it depends on a number of different things, such as how long theyve been running or what theyre currently at. in my personal experience? its always been a bit "forced" when you try adding someone to the party i guess, but it never really caused any actual problems
Where can I find sign in or smthn for campaigns
It really depends on if it’s a pre written adventure and where they are if they near the end it’ll be hard to introduce a character. If it’s a long running one. Kinda hard due to multiple factors.
Hey all. I am trying to build a Warlock level 6 just for a 1 off. I'm prettttttyyyy beginner but I just want to be able to play. The DM knows I am but I don't have much time to build him aka it's happening tomorrow. I would love some help

Warlock
Cast spells derived from occult knowledge
Warlocks quest for knowledge that lies hidden in the fabric of the multiverse. They often begin their search for magical power by delving into tomes of forbidden lore, dabbling in invocations meant to attract the power of extraplanar beings, or seeking places of power where the influence of these beings can be felt. In no time, each Warlock is drawn into a binding pact with a powerful patron. Drawing on the ancient knowledge of beings such as angels, archfey, demons, devils, hags, and alien entities of the Far Realm, Warlocks piece together arcane secrets to bolster their own power.

I should probably not play a warlock huh lol
seems like I won't be able to get the just of it in time
eh I suggest playing what interests you and works well with your party and D&D game
Warlocks are just a spellcaster with somone they owe to
Any class can be a good start!
the group is pretty even at the moment so I just figured I would try it out
Is there something specific you're worried about?
Just building and understanding what things do
I get the very basics but I have only built a character up to level 4 and 1 was a fighter and the other was a ranger
so i don't know much about spellcasters
I mean my #1 tip is work with your DM because lots of things can be determined by story!
But I'll try to help if I can!
So rangers are half-casters, so maybe you're at least familiar with how spells work
You get a pool of spells to pick from, and based on your level, you get to choose which of those spells you know/have available
As a warlock, you have a lot of spells you CAN use, but you can only use 2 leveled spells!
The good thing about Warlocks is that they get all their leveled spells back on a SHORT REST, which is unique to them!
That's what I heard
The warlock excels at the CANTRIP, which is a spell that doesn't cost a spell slot!
Would you help me build him in DND Beyond? I just really need a guide as to what I am doing
In the 2024 rules, I believe you basically get to pick a cantrip to be your #1! You get bonuses for those. In the past editions, this was always ELDRITCH BLAST, but 2024 DND made it more flexible
yea thats what I have seen
I'm not 100% sure how I'd help you in DND beyond
There’s an article here that covers the basics:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1059-how-to-create-your-first-dungeons-dragons
When you’re actually making your character, it starts with a bunch of settings. You should ask your DM what to change there, if anything.
You can always come back and change them later, too.
You’ll also want to ask your DM which method to select for ability scores.
But the rest — class, background, species, and equipment — you should be able to do on your own.
Just keep an eye out for anything highlighted in blue, which means you need to make a choice there.
Warlocks slots amounts arnt as big but do more damage they get allot more use out of eldrich blast
Bruh eldritch blast aint it anymore. DND 2024 lets warlocks chose any cantrip.
EB is still an incredible cantrip.
Especially when you combine Eldritch blast with the effects of Hex
Hello ! I came here after finishing bg3. I’ve actually started playing it because I’m very interested in dnd and always wanted to try it. Is it a good pipeline for me to start from the game and move to tabletop?
Hello, I didn’t buy the game yet and I plan on doing so. I’d like to discuss it a bit
You don't need to buy it to get a look at how it works. The basic rules are free: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
where can i play dnd here?
In the LFG channels :3
Newcomer check 😎
Morning all!
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
hey peeps, new to the channel not the game, irl is becoming to hectic so im trying the online scene to see how it pans out
Tarash, follow the steps in #find-a-game to find you a game or post what you're looking for for DMs to see
Iv already made a post where my ideals too percific i didn't mean it to be lol
I am not sure what ya posted lol. I can say that the best luck is found by those willing to pay to play, but thats not always the case
Just to join a dnd campaign but I'm sorta broke due to just moving
Or being pro active and responding in the threads to Ads that interest you or looking other places for games
Paid dnd doesn’t guarantee good dnd
got ya and totally understand. there are tons of Facebook groups but I am not sure how well they work
Spread your net wide there are lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
oh for sure Enoki. there are SO many facets to what make a great game
And the DMs on start playing can curate their reviews so they look better than they are
that would be the case in any site with any reviews for any product.
Main point is do your research talk to the DM find a game that suits you
That's what iv been doing ic played on set in real life and one of phone so it's been a experience since iv been trying to get into dnd and two campaigns have flaked twice on me
Is multi-classing realy important? And does it have limits, expect for the class count?
there are rules for multiclassing that you would need to follow, like minimum ability scores to do it.
but its perfectly possible to make characters without multiclassing. its rather easy to screw it up and make a character that is noticiably worse than straight classed ones too, if you dont know exactly what you are doing
I suspect most tables dont multiclass, or do it rarely
Thanks
use a / instead of #
Hi
Wanting to be one 😎
But there aren't really many "must" requirements. Understanding the rules is a good thing to start off with considering the DM is essentially the "referee", or the arbitor of the rules
okay fair enough. I know nothing of the rules

oooh handy thanks from saving me from going down a rabbit hole
hi, I'm new to dnd And id like some assistance with making a character sheet.
Welcome! Anything in particular you'd like to know about?
uh. Specifically how do i start with the actual process. I really dont know where to begin
Free Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Pick a class, that's the main thing. Then add a species and background.
In particular this chapter:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
It walks you through the important steps.
thanks. im using the website to make the character sheet so
Ah, then quite a few things will be done for you, but the order should be roughly the same.
DDBeyond has its own idiosyncrasies that may be confusing at first, but one step at time.
is it possible for a monk to have a subclass? if so what classes are open to a monk?
All classes have subclasses
Every class has subclasses. Getting a subclass is a fixed part of leveling up. In the newest version of the rules, all classes get their subclasses at level 3.
ah
As for which subclasses are available, depends on the material that you own. There is one free subclass for monk, the Way of the Open hand.
Open Hand (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#WarrioroftheOpenHand) is the default. Other subclasses will require purchase.
Wait u have to buy the book stuff to get other subclasses on your digital sheet?
Can anybody recommend me a good program to host a d&d campaign? I need something that I can use move pictures around and split them apart if needed, and some extra stuff
something like Google jamboard but it's gone defunct
Anything not in the Basic Rules will require you to buy the book your desired stuff comes in.
I'll check it out thx
uh I can't find lund
is it a website? app? or something else
Friendly reminder that this server is English language only
#rules message
Is the pirate thing (can't remember actual name) rouge subclass part of this
Like do I have to pay for it
If you wanted a VTT there's free stuff like roll20. Other popular options include Sigil, Owlbear Rodeo, and Foundry
I'll check those out thx
Yes. Swashbuckler is in Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
War makes for great campaigns, dragonlance is fun
Oh ok
Ig I'm being an asasin then
If you aren't able to buy the book yourself I recommend 2 options:
- If you're part of a campaign on D&DBeyond, you can see if someone owns XGE and has a Master Tier subscription to DDB. If they do, they can turn on content sharing which will allow you to take Swashbuckler as a subclass option.
- If your local library has 5e books available, you can copy the text into DDB's homebrew creator. Just make sure you don't publish the Homebrew / make it public
sorry for bothering you but I dont really want an entirely dedicated program to d&d, I want something simpler to just move the pictures around in, akin to word, PowerPoint and jamboard, but those don't have some of the features I'm looking for
What are the books that I should buy
I probably don't need squasbuckerler it just went kinda well with my character
I just don't want to really want to have alot of cool things locked away
To maximize the amount of content you get with the fewest purchases I suggest getting:
- Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
- 2024 Player's Handbook
- Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
You can also get Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide and Xanathar's Guide to Everything, but those unlock relatively fewer options compared to the 3 books I recommended
What extra features were you hoping to get?
How much does that cost
About $30/book
Oh ok I think I can do that
I probably don't need the monster one yet if it only has enemies in it
You can check out all the rulebooks here:
https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/rulebooks
Just check the box on the left to sort via books published by Wizards of the Coast (D&D's owner). Any other book on D&DBeyond is 3rd-Party (unofficial) which is not as widely accepted at any given table.
If you're going to get one, get the PHB. But give the game a shot with the free stuff first, there's plenty of it.
How does the books work with the stats on ddb
Like is there a thing I can buy to just unlock that or do I have to get both or what?
hey so I'm new and I want to start DM-ing where do I find players online?
There's a looking for dm thing on here I think
oooooh thanks
The physical books and the online service provided by D&D Beyond are separate products.
but... where exactly?😭😭😭😭
Looking for players? Check #find-a-game for instructions.
thank you 🙂
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Monsters of the Multiverse is the single best choice for player species as well.
Over 30 of them
Does it have kolbolts as a player charicter
Yes
Cool
Also is there a way I can just get them unlocked on ddb
You’d need to either purchase that book, or have that character in a campaign where that book is shared with you.
?tag ddb contentsharing
Content Sharing
A player or DM with a Master Tier subscription can enable Content Sharing in up to five campaigns. Once Content Sharing is enabled, any content unlocked by anyone in the campaign gets shared with everyone else, and they can use those shared character options for characters in that campaign. The folks in #dnd-maps can probably give you a few pointers.
Welcome! There’s some good info in #learn-to-play to get you started, but if you’ve got any specific questions, ask away.
Hi guys, I'm in the EDT timezone and was wondering how I could find my first game. Would it be easier to find a game online or in-person.
Likely much easier online, as you're not limited by your physical location 😛
I noticed some channels here but any recommendations where I should start? I also heard of Roll20 and made an account there, but noticed most games were paid. I don't mind paying but I wanted to try out for free for a session or two to understand what I'm getting into.
Check out #find-a-game for instructions on this server's lfg channels
And you can filter paid games on roll20, showing only free ones!
Gotcha, sounds good. Thanks!
okay so I started reading the Dungeon master's Guide. ad it has 320 pages. I do not have that kind of time. Is me reading this necessary? or is winging it after I figure out the core principles an option. if so what are said core principles? Is there a shorter guide that covers tha basics?
The DMG isn't for memorizing (well, maybe the first chapter), but rather as a reference. It has lots of useful information that can be relevant in specific circumstances.
So what I usually do is bookmark the sections I have come up often (or those I suspect are going to come up in the next session), so I have them ready.
As you read, you'll likely have an understanding of what is worth your time at that point and what not.
You might read the advice, some neat optional rules and mechanics, but not bother reading what every magic item does for example
So Should I just finish up the first chapter and just start looking for players? or am I forgrting anything else?
I'd look at some general guidance on DMing, such as the Running the Game series by Matt Colville on youtube. And perhaps some actual play shows to get an idea of how it can work.
But if you know the gist of the rules, you know the general approach of how to DM, nothing wrong with giving it a go.
i did start listening to the Dimwits of DImwood by legends of avatris. But I suspect they are not an average world
I suspect no game of dnd is truly average. Take your inspiration where you want. In the end, there should likely be a session 0 anyways where everyone can come to an agreement about the kind of game they would like to play.
fair enough thanks 😁 .
I've posted the notice. Thanks the help
Wishing you success with the game
Its a hobby that is mostly composed of reading.
(and in some cases writing)
not having the time, or enjoyment for neither can cause troubles ^^
thanks 🙂 i'll keep that in mind
If you want some more condensed info, try some youtube videos, they compress the info pretty well
thats true. i'm watching Matthew Colvile's playlist rn
can I wield two different short swords at level 1
If you’ve got two hands, you can hold any two one-handed weapons.
Since shortswords also have the Light property, then you can use both your action and your bonus action to attack twice.
Light
When you take the Attack action on your turn and attack with a Light weapon, you can make one extra attack as a Bonus Action later on the same turn. That extra attack must be made with a different Light weapon, and you don’t add your ability modifier to the extra attack’s damage unless that modifier is negative. For example, you can attack with a Shortsword in one hand and a Dagger in the other using the Attack action and a Bonus Action, but you don’t add your Strength or Dexterity modifier to the damage roll of the Bonus Action unless that modifier is negative.

Thank you so much!

text-based campaigns, are they difficult to come by?
im a new player and im very interested in playing, however, i just dont think playing through vc would be for me. for a number of reasons. so do people ever host campaigns where its done through text, im not sure if thats out of the question or not
Play by post (PBP) or text based campaigns are out there. There tend to be less of them than the more typical voice chat online games.
You can look through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for possible text-based D&D games.
Also the DnDBeyond.com forums has a specific forum channel for Play By Post games: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/play-by-post

Greetings Brethern!
Hi
Hello
Welcome!
Yeah, typically games are done via a group of 4 to 6 players, although that doesn't exclude lower or higher of course. Sometimes they can be a very large community (like "Westmarches" style games), however, with multiple DMs and groups worth of people.
If you want to look for a group, check #find-a-game for the info on how to make a post in this server's LFG channels.
If you need any other info or pointers, feel free to ask, there are plenty of people who would love to help.
Hey everyone! I'm very interested in playing dnd but I don't particularly know anything outside of the structure of games and the character classes so I was wondering if there were any free resources I could use to learn the technical stuff?
Any general guidance would be much appreciated!!

Hello
Hii
Want to learn together?
Hello all
Hello. I’m new with D&D, tried it once with friends and liked it. I don’t know much about the whole ruleset yet, but I look forward to learn and maybe find a party. Have a nice day everyone.
Morning Stone,
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Thanks, appreciate it.
