the rules for how to use weapon masteries are part of the Free Rules, which has been linked in the bot post above (under the "Quick Links" section)

Welcome newcomers. The bot post above has lots of helpful resources to get you started, including links to the Free Rules, and some introductory videos
@exotic remnant @crude musk thnk you! I'll study up!
In the future, you probably shouldn't ping someone with "NO PINGS" in their user name
Thank you, sorry about that
Dyno is a bot btw.
It’s under character creation it explains masteries: basic
Vex: player gained advantage
Sap: enemy disadvantage
Slow: enemy move half
Nick; can use off hand to attack
Gaze damages regardless of it hitting but only does mod amount of damage.
Topple it making some one prone
Cleave is attacking multiple enemies near you.
Weapon masteries are under the equipment section, not character creation
Yes sorry lol
why did my message got deleted
I only skimmed it, but I assume it's because declaring your age is against the rules on this server

If you're looking to get onto a game with other people online, this server has #find-a-game to describe to how get started here.
Guess i got a lot of reading to do! Thanks in advance if i ever make it that far into the rules/lore and information
If you've got any questions, feel free to hop back in here and ask! We can't walk anyone through in a 1 on 1 capacity, but we can help with individual things you get stuck on!
just 1, is online as fun as in real life or is real life way better?
Hey hey!!
I think each has its pros and cons. Online can be nice with using Virtual Tabletops and also removing any travel/room scheduling logistics issues.
In-person is nice because you can actually see everyone and get more of the non-verbal communication cues. Also can share food.
I love both for different reasons

Hi! So I have the basic understanding of DnD. Fantasy RP, Character roles, some other things.. but I also have no understanding what DnD is. I’ve heard people say you have to be the specific species from the books while I’ve heard of others have characters that are creatures they either made up or a fantasy creature from a different genre.. etc etc. sorry I’m just confused.. are there specific species and creatures that you have to use or are you free to create or be whatever you wanna be?
That main system has a plethora of races to play. Many DMs (the game master or dungeon master) tend to stick with just them but there are a TON. But many will also allow custom made aka homebrew
Huh.. okay I get that. So it goes both ways, some people prefer to stick to the DnD sources while others may have a more free style to them. That’s cool! Thank you for explaining!!
Yer welcome 🤗 that goes for lots of aspects.
So for the most part Mitcho is right, the game does rely on a set of limitations as to what u can or cannot have but I wanna add something really interesting. If U wanna play something not within the books, as in purely custom, and ur DM doesn't wanna let you create a race from scratch, there is a funny compromise called "Custom Lineage". Where u basically just have a generic character +1 feat, but u can flavor it to be whatever u want, so long as the DM is good with it ofc
Yes every setting is different
hello
Welcome!
I have not gotten a chance to play D&D but I have know a little about things like character creation and roleplay and a smidge of everything else but I hope to learn more and have fun!

Hello everyone. I joined this channel tnight just wondering if this community plays DND games through this discord? Or online apps?
I live in a small town with little interest. I played in college and haven’t got to play since and been itching to play again.
Any info would be helpful!
Lfg stands for "looking for a group"
Newcomers, where yall at??!
Yo
You got any advice on getting better at dnd I’ve only done a couple sessions in this campaign I’m in with friends we use tail spire
My #1 advice would be “when in doubt, just ask the DM.”
A lot of new players are quiet because they don’t know what they’re capable of. Reading the PHB and the Free Rules or whatever they’re called can be instrumental to making your experience more enjoyable.
You can’t make decisions that you didn’t know existed, right?
Fair enough I’m definitely not quiet my rouge character definitely a trouble maker
😭😭 As a DM, I enjoy trouble makers because it often ends up causing new NPCs in my world I didn’t plan for.
We were on an adventure to save a village from getting gunned down so we had to retrieve a letter telling to open fire on the village I had encountered the soldier and got the letter and I hand delivered it to the commanding officer at the battlefield the whole village suffered now my party hate me 😂
Yeah, that's diabolical. I'm surprised they haven't tried to jump you during a long rest.
That’s the thing tho in character they don’t tho how he got the letter
Ok, guys, I'm starting to really get into this and I wish to expand on my options on D&D Beyond, what would be a good rulebook for me to buy as a beginner?
@bronze apex First priority is one of the PHBs, depending on which version you want to invest in.
If you already have those, Xanathar's and Tasha's have the most player options.
I also recommend Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse
I'm new here
Ok, but which edition?
Yes, MotM is good if you primarily want more races/species
I'm personally DMing a 2024 game right now and I really like it. Lots of quality of life improvements across the board
Buy the most recent PHB for the edition you're playing. Assuming you're playing 5e, get the 2024 PHB
Exceptions if you're specifically wanting to run and/or play in a 2014 5e game
Welcome!
can you be my dungeon master?
No, my personal games are full. If you want to find a group use #find-a-game
At the moment, I had to homebrew and simulate a Leonin and a Dwelf, I'm starting to get into this, so I'd like to use the actual material, but the basics should come first.
DnD beyond have hand books and stuff and if someone in the campaign owns the book they can share them for everyone
Hi Hi Hi. I’m Forest! DND has been a thing that has interested me for years. I’ve heard lots of stories and watched some campaigns so I have a small idea of what DND is like.
I have roughly 14 years of experience of 1x1 roleplaying through discord and other platforms that have come and gone over the years. I love complicated plotlines and in depth characters with nuance and flaws. I’ve never really been able to fully immerse in a group roleplay because of scheduling conflicts.
I feel so intimidated by DND. I am so scared of voice chatting (which I’m trying to get better at). and also the thought of coming up with stuff on the spot is so scary. Even though I’ve definitely had back and forth roleplay responses for hours at a time, so I’m totally capable.
I think my goal here is to make friends and talk about game play and dynamics. Maybe to sit in on a campaign or two? Hopefully I’m successful in my endeavor.

I have absolutely no clue how to play D&D but I've wanted to play it a long while

Howdy noodle
dang I was hoping to find a session startin today
how are ya
I’m great. Did u go to the #find-a-game and fill out the looking for stuff to find games?
ah no
Thats optimistic, it can take a few weeks to find a game.
Fill that out and see what happens, ya never know
oh yowzas
Depends if you’re looking for a free group or willing to pay. It seems you’ll have as better chance if you are willing to pay lol
ah i dont have money for that lol im only just starting a job this week now that im finally able to
hey am I not able to submit in the looking for dm thing?
Still hit the LFG stuff and ya never know
well I wanna do the looking for dm and then scrool through looking for players but i dont have access to the former
Follow the instructions in #find-a-game first. I think it’s easy. It was for me as A DM
May I pm ya?
(I run beginner friendly one shots and I think one of the groups today is still looking for another player)
sure
I just really wanna try dnd lol but I literally know nothing about it so I might need some guidance
i feel like my age is whats gonna stunt me
If yer under 18 it may make it a bit harder unfortunately yup
damn
There are other teenagers out there who want to play D&D.
Have you considered asking your friends?
they dont play dnd
they actually think im wierd for it lol
but im always wierd so yolo
i wouldnt be on here if theyd play
also im homeschooled so I cant go to the clubs att eh school I used ta go to
Do u live near any local gaming shops?
not really
i mean red raccoon is somewhere here
but i dont have my license quite yet and madre aint gonna waste gas
soo is like this whole server mostly adults
Usually a great place to see if there’s anything local that and many libraries are starting to embrace it and host D&D games
I’ve seen several under 18 and some games also allow it.
ooh i might be able to ask my library
well not yet
theyre working on the main builidng so clubs and stuff arent available
I wish there was like an ai app or smth that could act as a dm
id be fine to just run it solo lol
So start your own on line group and post it here as a brand new dm looking for a group of COOL teens to play 🤷🏼♂️
Be the opportunity for others like yourself to play too
well id like to try my game as a player before I try as a dm
computer bout to die adios
Have fun good luck and just jump in as a dm. I did over 35 years ago and love it lol
I started out as a player in 2020 and have taken on the DM role. So much fun!
I used to design escape rooms and such and it has similar vibes
That’s so cool
@lost silo we started out at about the same time on DnD
Heck yeah!!!
Mind if I pm ya real quick? 😄
Certainly but I’m about to be away from my phone for about an hour
You got 📬
Starting as a DM sounds kind of overwhelming.
I highly reccomend starting out with one shots
I mean starting playing the game with DMing.
I’ve DMed for years but I had a solid base as a player first. I can’t imagine learning the ropes of TTRPGs in the DMs chair.
Someone had to do it 😄
It is a lot more involved that simply being a player.
But you can usually do a lot of upfront prep and start at a later date
How’s it going everyone… I’m not new to RPGs, but I’m new to Tabletop style playing. Any info on beginner friendly games/meetups/clubs in the Tampa Bay Area? Seems like a really cool community to get involved in. Thanks in advance
In-person games are rarely advertised on here, but if they were, you'd search in #looking-for-players!
If you don't have a group of people you know personally interested in playing the best way to find in-person games is through things like school clubs, game/hobby stores, libraries, and community centers.
Hello
if I spend fifteen bucks on a campaign can I play multiple or is it just that campaign
also i feel like I shouldnt have spent ten bucks just to unlock the tortle species...
Can you re-phrase that question?
so like
let say someones charging fifteen bucks for you to join
is that fifteen jsut to play that one campaign
It's probably per session.
damn
One campaign can last year(s) and its usually charged per session
Very rarely (but not never) are there one time buy -ins for an entire campaign
dang so I wouldnt even be in the full campaign nevermindt then
is it possible to solo play dnd
You have to understand how much time and effort is usually put in on the DM's side of things to create a custom game/story for players
The game isn't designed for it, but folks have made workarounds. It's really a variation of choose-your-own-adventure books.
This Ginny Di video might be a good place to start: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2nVilB8QeY
alrighty
Greetings 👋
There's lots of cool stuff for D&D not made by the official company.
You mean the Monster Manual?
to view all the creatures cause I can see the creatures from base dnd but like whe I search stuff from the obojima I cant find them
yea but like one that has everything so I can look at em all
You need to pay to access other content not covered by the Free Rules.
breh
You're indeed looking for the Monster Manual
dang
dnd costly innit
It can be, but lots of folks get good use out of the free material.
For official content, you've got MM, Tome of Foes, Monsters of the Multiverse, Volo's...
Just in case, since it seems like you're new to the game: players don't need access to the monster manual at all. Only the DM needs it.
If you're a player, I recommend actively avoiding the MM due to it containing spoilers for encounters your DM will run
The only reason a player would read the MM is for stuff like Wildshape, but even then only with the DM's blessing
oh well im basically my own dm since I cant find anything to join lol
Have you looked at #find-a-game, r/LFG, the DDB forums, or Roll20 yet?
yup
It's kind of hard not to find something if you're willing to dig through some rubble
If you wanna play DnD solo, then go ahead tho
most of roll 20 was pay or 18+ and the ones that i found that werent were just dead like one i was joining today is just a black screen with no one it was supposed to be starting an hour ago
If you want to play dnd I'd reccomend not just looking for games that are starting today
Do note that finding a game takes time. Setting up a group usually takes a few days to even a few weeks of preparation.
well im not anymorw
what is play by post
Text-based gameplay.
Usually not.
This article gives a good overview: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1668-play-by-post-playing-dungeons-dragons-in-pbp
nvm they dont have anymore slots
Try some of the servers advertised in #looking-for-community
They may have games available beyond what’s shared here.
You could always look at archmage press domains of the deathless king modules. Those are “solo” modules where you make a party (or use you Pluse npcs.) but it’s a mix of cyoa with combat.
It comes with monster stats as well
But playing solo is generally not advised
The command you're looking for begins with a /. Try typing /looking and select the appropriate option.
Hi guys, how do you type the hit dice into your character sheet once you multiclass?
Do I just seperate the total and hit dice with a slash?
like: total 3 / 1 and Hit dice: 1d8 / 1d6 for example?
On the fillable pdf sheet? Yeah, that should work.
yea on the fillable one
although this kinda goes for character sheets in general i guess
Yep
#looking-for-dm I've never done online before but my group broke up like three months ago and I miss D&D.
The command you're looking for begins with a /. Try typing /looking and select the appropriate option.
Ah sorry
gurgle
What...is your character
Trifling barbarian... How do you feel about clowns and sob stories?
It's not all sob though. He really likes Lythander
I like

He's my pride and joy. Looking for the right dm to show him to.
well, my creation is a goblin named stworglo, he's a failure
Wonderful
I have never done dnd before and I have a question
Does all dnd require you to be in a vc or have a camera on? Or are there some that are more like just text based roleplays where you draw your character and post them and just roleplay normally
There are all methods. Many servers are text-based (see #looking-for-community) for example. D&D though is not freeform, it's a system of rules, which includes rules for social-based mechanics.
i was also kinda wondering that, thanks
hello all I am joining a D&D game for the first time as a player, I got an (apparently) lucky stat array roll of 18/17/14/12/12/12 and was curious how people would go from there. kind of paralyzed by the choices
Well, what sort of table is it?
big flat metal classroom table at a community center
... you watch a lot of Airplane! as a kid?
(sandbox campaign in Icewind Dale)
look i'm fond of gladiator movies, what can I say
With those super lucky rolls, it's kinda hard to build something bad
So, given it's sandbox, is it a serious thing where you're tracking rations or more commonly laid back?
pretty laid back
Do you know what sort of characters you like to play?
i was hoping to keep things pretty simple so I can get a feel for the system. hit it with sword kind of guy.
but with a versatile array like that I was wondering who the jack of all trades class might be these days
Could be a good Barbarian.
If you're looking for versatility and swordfighting, consider College of Swords Bard
It's not a simple class to play if you're looking for that, but it can be really fun and it's learnable!
alright, i'll look that one up, thanks
Otherwise, Rogue, Fighter, and Barbarian are all pretty simple classes to play and can play in melee (especially Barbarian wants to play in melee)
For a sandbox, Ranger can be really fun and would be fantastic with 18 Dex and 17 Wis right out the gate
i'm thinking Druid, for story-insertion purposes - put the 18 into Wis and the 17 into Con, I guess?
Do whatever you'd like! You don't need to have the optimal build for my impression of the game you're running
true that
Hey I’m creating a noble sorcerer and was wondering what the best stats are for sorcerer of the 6?
New to this, my only knowledge of DnD extends to BG3 which is to say not much
You want high charisma, for your spells and also talking to people
Constitution is the 2nd most important, followed by dex
Thanks:))
Harvest said what I was gonna say
I'm creating a character and i think i want to multiclass but idk if i should start with a ranger or rogue
If you're new to D&D I'd suggest not taking on the complexity of multiclassing. Also you may want to discuss character concepts in #character-discussion as folks there can provide suggestions and ideas.
gotcha

hey all! ive been intrested in DND for years now and finally wanna learn/ actaully play dnd, is this a good place to do so?
It is! You can start here: #learn-to-play
And #find-a-game can point you in the right direction when you're ready to look for a group
ah, thank you very much !
im looking on dnd beyonds chachter creation sheet, and for the classes, whats the differnece between core, 2014, and criticla role, are they all allowed in any campainge or?
What's allowed/available very much depends on the group and the kind of D&D game they want to run.
Start withe the free materials, if you like the game well enough consider investing in the Players Handbook, and then invest in other books as you want and fit whatever D&D game/group you're playing with.
is there much of a differnece between the free stuff and the handbook?
aswell is core or 2014 more common? (sorry for the load of questions)
There's more subclasses, species, and feats in the Players Handbook.
As to DnDBeyond's character sheet toggles:
- Core is the 2024 core rules (the basic rules)
- 2014 uses the 2014 version of the core rules
- Critical Role is harder to answer as they have an official D&D book, but most of the material would not be considered "official" D&D in the same way as books published by Wizards of the Coast/D&D.
oh alrighty
I couldn't say whats more used right now between the 2024 core rules and the 2014 core rules - they are actually quite similar. I tend to think of the 2024 core rules as a refined version of the 2014 rules.
ah okay, thank you! you were really helpful :D
which way of generating my stats would be recommended?
generally comes down to your DM, im a fan of the rolling format as it gives better random variants, but for a new player going with the provided base stats for you character class is a good start
they can be found in the players handbook
oh alright, ty!
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Standard array is the most used
Hey everyone. New to the server and online d&d. Can anyone give me a rundown of how the game is played remotely? are there certain things i should install? how do most people play it? is rolling the dice based on the honor system or is there a mechanic used online so the dm can see the roll? i have many questions. all help would be greatly appreciated.
Online the most common way is with a VTT (virtual table top) like roll20, Owlbear or Foundry, as few examples
Rolls on those are virtual dice and shared to all, so nobody's able to cheat
Depending on the group, sometimes Discord is also involved. Discord channels can use bots like Avrae to roll dice and even keep character sheet data.
And obviously, voice chat helps grease the wheels
and do you join servers within those programs themselves to join groups? does a dm send a link? like say i find a group okay now how would i join theoretically?
It really depends on the group and how they do things. Edit: sorry, I realized after I wrote that message that I sounded like I was being short. I promise I didn't mean to.
If people use roll-20 youlll have a link to the discord for voice and a link to the game it self where you can make character
You’re all good! I read it at first and was like “alright but I still don’t understand” 😂
Thank you Kyle. Really clears up some questions. I appreciate it
Lol, sorry!
Dude no problem at all appreciate the help
as an example say you chocse to sign up to mine, i use the discord and DnDbeyond for it all. discord for voice and any text based stuff the game needs as well as sharing my own created maps and whatnot. the dndbeyond id use for character sheets and dice rolls and combat with maps.
other Dms may do almost all of this through discord or other platforms but it all depends on the gropup you join and they generall state where and how in thier descriptions when searching for players
gotcha! that makes a lot of sense. definitely gives me a better understanding thank you
ya welcome. personally as a DM i still roll with my dice at my desk lol but people dont see them rolls anyway. if its a roll the party needs to know or see ill use the app for it
makes sense! do you have any recommendations for finding newcomer groups or is it best to take my chances on the "looking for players" channel?
heyy i’m new to dnd like extremely new i know nothing about it but am so interested to learn and play what’s the best way to start!
here in the looking for players channel is a great place otherwise roll 20 is decent
i can help but reading some basic rules and watching some online games of it may also help increase your understanding of the games mechanics
Hello! i want to get into this because its really interesting to me. I literally just made a character, id like to join a group to play with
#find-a-game is a place to look for DMs and groups
i have, currently sending my intros to various things :D
Does anyone ever actually go up to lvl 20? How do you balance an encounter there?
That would be a good question for #dm-discussion
Level 20 play is very much not a beginner topic
If I've got the 2024 books, just wondering if it is worthwhile investing in getting the 2014 books? It seems like so many people want to bring 2014 rules into the game?
Yo! I have no idea how to play DND or where to find people to play with, where should I start out on my journey?
I asked this question earlier today. Most people said that 2014 rules have been the most popular version, and since 2024 is more recent most people usually don't want to switch for minor-ish changes.
Personally I think, if you're playing with friends or people you know it shouldn't matter too much which you have.
But if you wanna play online I'd ask around dms and players before making any purchases
The 2024 materials are really not that different from the 2014 materials. THere's a reason why the game designers decided not to make it a new edition. It's still D&D 5e - just revised/refined.
Now some folks do have opinions about all that but I'd suggest trying things out and see for yourself. You can use the free rules for both to compare.
2014 free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014

Heya...Im new to DnD and was thinking of joining a small campaign perhaps?
I have a shitty attention spend so want to start small.
Sounds like trying a one shot would be a nice option. Basically an adventure that lasts one session, sometimes few more, but very short
Anyways check out #find-a-game
uhhh hey guys
im looking to join a party for dnd ??? i haven't played since like 2022 LOL

Guy's I have zero idea how dnd works,
And I am not interested in reading rule books to understand it
is there any way I can directly play it online and try to understand along the way??
Is it possible to find a game that you could join with absolutely no information, relying on the DM and the other players to teach you everything along the way, step by step? Sure, it's possible. But it's highly unlikely.
Remember that DnD is a fairly complex game that multiple people have to take hours out of their schedules in order to play. To put the responsibility of learning the rules on everyone else is a bit rude.
There are definitely groups that are very new player friendly, and who would be happy to help you understand the rules - but reading is going to be crucial as there are many things you will need to know about your character that you can really only properly document by reading.
you dont need to read a whole book to know enough to play dnd, but it is kinda rude to your fellow players to just refuse to read anything outright
There are youtube videos to help with comprehension, as well as actual plays that can help to understand how to play as well.
Heyyy guys
my cousin introduced me to DND a while back (was very intimidated at first) lowkey have no clue what it is or where to start but it sounded super cool! told me to join this server to get started, can anyone perhaps point me in the right direction?
@storm hawk ^
Besides the good advice others gave, you can occasionally find tutorial sessions like those offered by libraries, the virtual weekends (see the server's Events tab), and paid sessions.
hear me out i just finished playing knights of pen and paper 2 on my pc and it was so fun i decided to actually give DnD a try so am hoping to find a few person who would take some time to show me the way and get me into the game more

It's not common for folks to have the time/bandwidth to teach others one-on-one as there are too many new folks joining daily. But the links above should help, and we're happy to answer specific questions!
Hii new here, I have read the essentials and I wanna dm a game with my friends who have no idea how to play yet on my birthday. But i have no experience playing dnd so here I am
Check out the links a few lines up!
Hi. Just wondering. Are all the DMs here flaky or just a couple
With a large community, there is always some percentage of people who will be flaky and some who will not.
Just like any other large group. I wouldn't say the majority of DMs are flaky ime
I would certainly hope it’s a small percentage. I know I’m not flaky so there’s one for ya lol
So where can I find these rules?I have zero Idea where to start.

You can find the Free Rules linked in the bot post just above!
If you have any specific questions as you're reading, we'll be happy to answer them here
Do i need to read all of those things like every monster???
No, just read the parts that are important for you as a player. Most importantly: how to play, how combat works, how to build a character, and what actions your character has in combat.
Oh that's a relief
After reading roles where can I start playing??
Is there any platform where I can view or play a session?
You can find plenty of recorded games on YouTube and Twitch.
And my Main question is on what story will be game based on like are we like role-playing our SI character in some fictional World?
Ok I'll see
Do game in dnd follow some specific Lore or game master can choose any fictional World?
Not sure what you mean by SI, but the story can vary widely, from one released by the makers of D&D to ones inspired by other media to something the DM made up.
DnD has a lot of lore, but your DM can throw away any amount of established lore if they're creating a homebrew setting
SI means self inserted character
No need to reply directly like that when the person is involved in the conversation.
It'll depend on your DM. Different DMs will have different worlds for you to play in, and will have different requirements for the character you make.
Okay so we can follow any storyline? Like what if game master decide story to take place in ASOIF
The DM can do whatever, provided the table of players is on board with it.
The canonical lore is based in a multiverse with a plethora of settings, from medieval fantasy Greyhawk to futuristic post-apocalyptic Eberron to gothic horror Ravenloft to spacefaring Speljammer...
Ok
Where can I find The main story line
You follow the adventure hooks which the DM sets for you. From there, you have agency over what your character does within their capabilities
D&D has multiple official settings, so there is no "main" storyline.
Okay i think i need to first Read the rules before anything
Then only I can understand
That's a good plan.
DnD doesn't have a storyline in the way you're thinking of. It has settings - places with world-building - and the actual story you follow is one of hundreds of thousands, and yours is unique!
Well I think I'll watch some games,
I hope I'll understand better after that
think of it this way, there is lore and from this lore a dungeon master or game master creates a world, within this world there will be some main end game goal (you may not specifically know) but you play the game make choices with you party and your game master will direct your party towards that end goal utilizing your parties own personal decisions.
Hello everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself. I’ve been playing DnD on and off for a while, but I consider myself a new comer cause we never really followed any rules during our games we just rolled a d20 and moved along with the story. I’m excited to learn and play some dnd!
Hi everyone! I've been playing Dungeons & Dragons for about three years now, and I've loved every second of it. However, I still consider myself a newcomer because my DM hasn't been using the correct rules consistently. I'm currently looking for a good DM to join a champion with.
Hey Dexter check out and follow the steps in #find-a-game and then u can find dms
Thanks ☺️
No problem!
Guys how do I create a campaign in dnd beyond ? There is no create campaign button , only join campaign button...
If you navigate to "Collections" in the menu bar, head to "My Campaigns". There should be a button there.
You also need to have a sub to the service
You actually don’t need a subscription to create a campaign. You do need a master tier subscription to enable content sharing though.
Hey
hey wolffy
How's everyone doing
I am great and you? I am just working on reviewing the characters that started last night on their first D&D adventures!
Oh cool, I good thx been wanting to try dnd for a while and finally decided to
you'll love it lol
Hey all, I call myself Wayne and I've been wanting to try out dnd since high school but never had the courage to open up and step out of my comfort zone. I have done one-on-one roleplaying before and I DM'd a dnd game completely blind and had a blast. I came here after pushing myself to open up and seek out for some pointers to where and how to start out, I do warn that I am on the poorer side.
I do not mind info dumps or small advice on how to play dnd, I'd just like to know how to start getting into it, where to look for games, and have fun trying the game out as blind as possible.
if you are looking for a group, the best way here is to go to #find-a-game and follow the super easy steps to help find a group
there is other great links in the pins on this channel
Don't worry Wayne I've never played before so I can relate. I'll look into some rules n stuff before playing
plenty to read thats easy to understand. Youtube is not bad either, but like anything on the internet, not everything is exactly correct lol

@lost silo I did my introduction to DnD session last night that I created and I had 4 brand new players
How did your game turn out
It went great. The three rookies have been asking me questions all day which means they were engaged and wanting more and ready to play at our next session. How’d yers go
It actually went really good and I’m going to do another one next Tuesday night
I’m suppose to be DMing my LMOP session tomorrow night but I have DMed a lot over the weekend so I’m going to take the night off
I had a tournament over the weekend and last night so I’m tired of DMing for the week
what kind of subclass would pair well with a harengon rougue ?
Whatever sounds the most fun to you
Species has little mechanical impact on subclass and vice versa (save for 2 very old specific ones)
Helloo! As a new player, a group of my friends (including me) wanted to start dnd online. Any tips?
#find-a-game is a good place to find new people.
There are two templates I like for building characters also
The first one is:
- Personality: A mostly positive quirk.
- Bond: A relationship your character has.
- Ideal: What your character values.
- Flaw: A negative quirk.
The second is:
- Strength: A positive trait
- Flaw: A negative trait
- Motivation: Why your character is exploring.
- Background: What your character's precious occupation was
Try to tie the traits together. It makes sense that a brave, reckless gambler would be motivated by debt for example.
thank you so much! we actually just wanted to start as a group already, so that’s one part of the process done, phew!
apparently not , i figured it out
guys i think i created an abomination not a character

i found out literally today about the 27 point rule...how is my sheet for a first timer?
Pretty good! Though I'd point out a couple of things:
~~- Barbarian rage doesn't really work when wearing armor, which you are. ~~
- Hunting rifle isn't a PHB weapon, so any proficiency or mastery regarding it would need to be discussed with your DM.
- Your gold doesn't reflect the starting gold amount, so that's also a DM discussion point.
Regarding the first point, multiclassing can be a bit of a trap, because of conflicting features. If you're new, I recommend playing single-classed for the first few times.
Rage works when not wearing heavy armor specifically. They are wearing medium armor, so still works
Was just about to say that medium armour works
Oh my bad, memory leak
How do I start with makeing a character
Well, first decide if you would like to create one by hand or with the help of digital tools.
If you want to do it by hand, you can use a sheet like this: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
If you want to use digital tools, DDBeyond is a good place to start: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
The free rules have a step by step guide: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
noted , i multiclassed to make an abomination of a charcter on purpose tho , like when im low take off armor and use rage , enemy too far so i just snipe him regardless of proffession , i carry a kettle with me for like...i cast boiling water and vicious mockery to roast my enemy physically and mentally , im the messing around type player , and thats how i intend to figure out the loopholes in such a tricky sheet , trial and painfully hilarious error
and im fully aware of the contradiction betwee warrior and barbarian , cuz warrior heals and barbarian gets stronger the lower he is , but i did that on purpose too, i keep healing and when im low i become insanely tanky AND powerful...im theoretically a grizzly bear that can heal...
with guns...
borderlands 2 gunzerker inspired character lol
You may want to read the Class descriptions again a fighter doesn’t heal per say they get a second wind ability to get some healing but this is limited us
And barbarian doesn’t get stronger the lower they get
I like the flavor you put into the character. But still, the point about what sort of guns will be available and the amount of starting gold stands.
Classes list starting equipment. I'd go with that.
im aware of the first but not the second
thats why i also have a crossbow, im profficient with this one this time
thx for the help guys👍
still practically immortal tho , the main flaw is ill need a bunch of rests and most of my weapons are heavy...wich will definetly take a toll
but thats why im tanky
Has your DM approved a level 2 character?
Weapons being heavy just means you need a certain strength score to use
Practical immortal is not a thing especially at lvl 2
Every class can heal on a short rest by using hit dice
There’s still also the issue of starting gold. You don’t have enough money for a breastplate (400 gp) unless your DM has given you it explicitly or has given you significant extra starting gold
Keep in mind you cannot just “take off your armor” mid combat. Medium armor takes 1 minute (10 rounds) to take off.
Does the Celestial Summon spell grant telepathic communication with the spirit, or does it only respond to spoken commands?
Rules as written, only spoken commands
Hello there. Do all these dnd games somehow are binded to the game dnd online?
Can dm themselves set the rules? What are dice?..
Each group is independent and play as a group choosing to follow the rules as perfectly or not as they wish. Some follow them to the letter and others use them as a loose guideline. Dice are what is used to help make the game have an aspect of random luck both good and bad luck
D&D Online is an MMO based on the TTRPG, though not the most recent edition (5e) if I recall correctly. The MMO is set in the Eberron campaign setting with some adventures in the Forgotten Realms setting, so if your game is also set in Eberron or Forgotten Realms you’ll see some lore similarities
I heard people use dice for each attack?.. or is it like some kind of bonus to an attack?
Both, dice are used to determine if you hit (d20) and how much damage you deal (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12)
Yea well I'm actually new to ddo as well, so am not completely sure with the way locations are called there
This is before any other modifiers like proficiency or your ability modifiers
Ohhh
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#Dice
This section of the Free Rules goes in-depth as to what each dice is used for
Check out the pinned messages here @copper shell as they have some great info to help you learn and understand

I don't have a party
Noted
Hmm I got one equipped on me already
That's alot , and a drag but noted
How do I create a character
The free rules have a step by step guide: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
Decide if you would like to create one by hand or with the help of digital tools.
If you want to do it by hand, you can use a sheet like this: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
If you want to use digital tools, DDBeyond is a good place to start: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
If this is just a practice character then that’s fine. But to make it campaign ready you should make them level 1.
You’ll have to remove it then and choose an appropriate starting armor dependent on your initial class. Perhaps go over your equipment list and see if there’s any discrepancies between your initial class/background’s starting equipment/gold and what you have in your inventory
What do I do after I created a character
There is a barbarian subclass, Zealot, where you get that extra pool of healing. There's another called World Tree, that lets you give temporary hp to yourself and allies.
Multi classing at low levels is just messy for the most part and you'd be actively shooting yourself in the foot as the "good" stuff tends to start coming at level 3.
That's not a hard and fast rule. But by monoclassing (all levels in just fighter, just barbarian etc.) it's hard to make an actual "bad" character. Weaker, sure, but it'll still do something.
If you go throwing multi classes around without really knowing what you're looking for it is much easier to make a mess of it.
If you feel like you've got a good understanding of the rules, the next step is to find a game. You can check on #find-a-game for instructions on how to get started searching on this server.
What are the rules?
You can check this channel’s pins as well as #learn-to-play , both of which have links to the Free Rules
wich means no multiclass , fair enough
i dont fully understand so itll take a while to figure out
Muticlassinf is not recommended for new players considering you can only consoling have stats for the class as well (must be over 13)
alright so i should pick barbarian then subclass then multiclass later?

Could someone pls help me
There is a link on the bot post above with the few basic rules
better?
You wouldn’t have the money for a breastplate at lvl 1
As per the free rules, a level 1 character only gets the starting equipment determined by their class and background. Instead of equipment, they can choose a gold option to manually purchase equipment instead that is also detailed on the class page. As per the Barbarian page, they do not natively get a breastplate, and the gold option (75 gp) is not enough to afford it (400 gp). Even with gold gained from your background you shouldn’t be able to afford a breastplate.
Also not sure what adventuring pack you added to your inventory, but you seem to have added it twice
also also, you seem to have chosen greatsword mastery but have a battle axe equipped instead
Elloo im new. how to start? I created the character and now how to play?

sry but i got a question again
do i need to read all the different class rules or do i just need to read the things nesecery for my class?
sry if its a stupid question
No such thing as a stupid question. If you already know which class you want to play, there's no need to read the features of other classes.
ok thx
i appreciate the help
ill probably have some more questions later but ill try to figure it out for now
We're here to help.
sry i got more questions
what restrictions are there on the races you can make your character?
There are set species which you can pick for your character. You can find the Free options here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-origins#SpeciesDescriptions
Ultimately, it's up to the DM what official (and even unofficial) options are allowed or not.
oh i missed that
i thought it would be in a different place
When you join a game most of the time th dm will share material
Hey idk how to join a d&d game help me please
If you feel like you've got a good understanding of the rules, the next step is to find a game. You can check on #find-a-game for instructions on how to get started searching on this server.
this game keeps getting more confusing...and why not the breastplate i already have and got equipped? i mean it was an option , i wasnt dictated nothing...and my mastery is both greatswords and greataxes and i got those in my inventory as well , i have the battleaxe for the shield cuz great weapons must be handled by both hands...
What feature is giving you the breastplate then
Again, you can’t have it normally since a breastplate is 400 gp
And at best a level 1 character will start with ~200-250 gp, but that’s only if they choose very specific classes and backgrounds and choose the gold option
idk bro they told me pick my starting gear so i did
Just because you can put it in your character sheet on DnD Beyond doesn't mean it's legal for your character to have that from the start.
looks like the duplicated stuff will earn me the money then
You cannot add duplicate stuff just to sell it
If you just go to DDB and add equipment to your sheet, it will let you add basically anything. Full suit of +3 plate, vorpal sword, antimatter rifle.
What you're allowed to add is dependant on your character options.
i think im starting to get it
Speaking of which, I’m not even sure what starting pack you did add since they’re in chests for some reason, not backpacks
Basically, you can't just start with whatever you want. Your class dictates what items you start with: quite literally exactly what the class gives you according to the items it lists and nothing else.
ill modify it again and coe back...ive been making this sheet for weeks...does it usually take that long?
If you’re just learning the rules it can
Depends. Obviously the more experienced a player is, the faster they can make a sheet.
As for this, part:
- Since you’re using the DDB character creator your starting equipment options should have been the very last page of the character creator. If you skipped it you should clear your inventory and go back to that tab.
- Your stated masteries don’t match up with what’s on the sheet. Your sheet says you have Greataxe and Heavy Crossbow mastery. It’s ok to use a weapon you don’t have mastery in, just wanted to make sure it wasn’t a mistake.
- Furthermore, a weapon being “great” is not the thing that has a weapon be used in two-hands. That would be the “two-handed” (requires 2 hands) or “versatile” (can be used in 2 hands) properties.
please tell me its ready now
i see
but there , i started all over again
Yup that’s a barbarian
hello!
Welcome!
Seems good to me
kinda new here and I didn't know it the bot knows what class i used lol
FINALLY
Wait, actually it seems you have some unknown proficiencies
wdym?
Some of these might just be redundant due to DDB formatting (e.g. Battleaxe, Heavy Crossbow, etc don’t need to be explicitly listed since you already have martial weapon proficiency)
But some seem to be manually added like Frying Pan and Secret Stone Sword
And some seem to be a mix of both (e.g. Hunting Rifle, Shotgun)
ah yes those are for fun
i forgot to add the kettle
Keep in mind those are homebrew and would need DM approval
like i cast boiling water and vicious mockery to roast my enemy physically and mentally
You don’t have Vicious Mockery listed on your sheet
stuff for messing around
Boiling Water is not an official spell
i know
And neither has to do with proficiency in homebrew weapons
i didnt know but expected that
Nova, you can put anything you like on a sheet. Really anything! But if you're looking to bring a character to a game the first thing to do is to make sure they're made with the rules of the game. Sure, you might find an indulgent DM that doesn't mind what you've come up with on your own, but I really wouldn't bet on it.
Yeah, officially the closest thing to using a pan & kettle would be using them as improvised weapons, which is a specific thing you need to get proficiency in and only a few character options get that proficiency (e.g. the Tavern Brawler feat)
neither can i , thats why im following your advice so far....i gave him a shotgun before...ppl didnt approve of my sheet so much i had to start from scratch like 7 times now
and i dont expect to find a party , im too busy to even play for an hour straight
Build a character:
- class
- species
- background
Fill in ability scores with the standard array, then apply modifiers as granted. Pick proficiencies, equipment, spells if applicable. It's all in the Free Rules.
i was making sth for just me and 2 of my friends to play like 20 minnutes or so in the campaign every couple days..
i even named the campaign a bunch of dumassesses' journey
Hello everyone! I just joined. I have about a year on-and-off experience with DnD, and I’m looking for a new campaign. Preferably general fantasy, where I can incorporate my woodelf ranger.
Check #find-a-game for instructions on how to use this server to find a group
Also welcome!
Star beat me to it lol. I was going to say the same
anyway....what else should i change now then?
As we mentioned before, remove the homebrew or get DM approval for it and everything else should be ok
They sure can be fun at the right table, but proficiency in something is a meaningful term that has a tangible impact on mechanics which is why it needs DM approval
might leave em for now cuz i dont have a group willing to play for half an hour every week
senior highschool really takes a toll on ones life...
Does anybody have a group I can join
You want #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community!
#find-a-game will help I get to finishing a group naeem
is tasha considered an expansion to the core books? and canon? or entirely different?
it doesnt have lore so canon is not really relevant.
I think its considered a supplement to the core rules?
How do I post to the looking for DM chat? Looking through other lfg chats is pretty intimidating since I only know one of my days off and the other varies
i want to know as well

I mean like, are you using dnd beyond or roll20?
dnd beyond
What's the trouble then?
i don’t know lol, it’s late at night and my brain isn’t working right? sorry for the trouble
You are alright...
Let's talk about this in the section where it says "ddb support" though...
hii! im new to dnd and i wanna find a campaign thats just a few people talking in a discord call and having fun using their imagination... is this the right place for that? how can i find that> (minor)
Same as the person above 👆
I just joined this server after quitting a campaign. I’ve only played with people from my university before so this is my first time looking online
Welcome! Have you looked through the Free Rules yet?
If you’re talking about a rules-loose campaign using the 5e ruleset as a base there might be some advertised in #looking-for-community or #looking-for-players occasionally. If you’re talking about something more similar to a group RP then you’d need to look elsewhere unfortunately since this server is for D&D games only
Welcome! If you’re looking for a group to play with using this server check out #find-a-game

Any time
#looking-for-players and #find-a-game has instructions to posts: how ever you’ll have a hard time finding a game because your minor and not many people are comfortable doing so for a multitude of reasons
what stat benefits sorcerer
Charisma is your spell stat, so you'll want that
After that, Constitution and Dexterity are probably equal as second most important.
So I wanna play d and d but I don’t know anyone in Tennessee who can teach me how to play

im still quite confused on how the books work and be applied to a campaign if a player wants one of the classes there
Well, let's start simple: Do you have a DM yet?
yeah
Then you should start by asking your DM which books and options they allow you to use. For example: if a DM says that they're only allowing content from the Player's Handbook, then you can't play an Artificer at all.
If the character options you want to play are allowed by the DM, then you have to have access to the content that contains those options. For example, if you wanted to play a Hexblade Warlock, you'd have to own the book Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
Alternatively, your DM can share that book with you, if you're playing in person and your DM has it.
Lastly, if your DM has a master tier subscription to DnD Beyond and you're using that for your character sheets, your DM can share any book content they own with the campaign party.
ooh
i appreciate how detailed these are, thank you!!
but yeah quite unfortunate, our recent oneshot was an experimental session so we only got to stick with the basic stuff
in terms of character sheets, someone said the artificer class has been included in r20 for a while. though, i still can't find where if i were to make one ;;
You'd need to purchase the Tasha's Cauldron of Everything supplement to have access to the Artificer on Roll 20.
a total newb at D&D here, i am thinking of trying to start by maybe making a character first.
rn, i am considering my class, and im thinking of picking one of the spellcasting classes (warlock, sorcerer, and wizard)
i think i can make a case for any of these 3 classes for my character lore, but i just want advice on how each of them would differ mechanically and "feel", while im slowly chewing my way through the free rules on the classes on my end.
if i were to purchase the book but not my dm, would that mean that the book's rules still wouldnt apply to the next campaign until the dm allows/has it?
Sure thing, I'll give my two cents.
- Wizard: Highest complexity. Their magic is studied and learned through hard work. Has the most spells available per adventure. Their subclasses tend to focus on one type of spell style (called a school), becoming particularly adept at that style. They tend to have a ton of utility.
- Sorcerer: Medium complexity. Their magic is natural for them, either from their bloodline or from an accident. Sorcerer is notorious for having some of the biggest, flashiest spells that deal more damage or are harder to resist than other spellcasters.
- Warlock: Medium complexity. Their magic is granted/taught to them from another entity. They can cast the fewest spells per adventure, when compared to other spell casters, but make up for it but having a ton of utility and customization for other things they can do. Their Cantrips (spells that use no resources) are the strongest in the game.
I can't guarantee exactly how Roll20 works, but I assume you'll be able to use whatever you purchase, but your DM won't have access to the rest of that book's options. For example, Tasha's has the rules for Artificer, but it also has a number of rules for magic items that the DM can award the party with. If you purchase Tasha's, I don't think your DM will be able to see those items directly.
ok many thanks for this write up, it's helping me connect the dots for what each of these classes do, especially warlock's customization due to their eldritch invocations.
i have a few other questions. if let's say i want my character to be able to make edits to how certain spells operate on the fly, i should go for the sorcerer class, correct?
i was also thinking if i can infuse magic spells into handheld objects, but i googled what an artificer does and i assume that is what i need on my end....
my main idea was actually to try and see if my character can create new spells during adventures using the current catalog of spells they have on their disposal, but im not sure how that would work rules-wise
To augment spells on the fly, Sorcerer is right on the mark. That's exactly where its individuality lies.
As for your second idea, Artificer is... almost there. A lot of people run into a very, very unfortunate issue with Artificer, where they think Artificer can do A, B, and C, where in reality it can do b, D, and E. (If that makes any sense.)
Artificer can put spells into items! ... But not until level 11. And only on one item at a time. What they can do is put special magical properties on items, basically turning non-magic items into a magic item from a list of options. It's a lot more narrow of a scope than most people realize.
Finally, for creating new spells, there's basically almost no mechanics available that achieve what you're probably looking for. There's some extremely vague guidelines, which mostly amount to "work with your DM and make something up". Not something I'd advise for a new player at all.
i assume that level 11 would take a long time to slowly level to (3 month long, based on a weekly session i guess?)
To put it into perspective, the vast majority of games never go past level 10, and the ones that do rarely go past level 12.
....that is very sad🫠
Indeed.
i think i get it, balance wise, but still.....
the game is not really balanced
power budgets aren't really a thing as much as you'd expect
as in action economy wise
And the pace of leveling will differ considerably between games. I'm currently DMing a game that has been ongoing for almost 3 years now, playing weekly, and my players are currently level 13.
Yep. Whereas I just finished a campaign that went from level 1 to 18 in about 6 months
And a chunk of that time was breaks for holidays
Anyone that can answer my question about DnD Beyond? I am having problems with spells
If you've got questions about navigating the website, #ddb-support would be the best place to ask.
If you've got general questions about the spells in the game, we might be about to help here.
okay thanks!

Welcome! If you're looking for a game, the best way to find one on this server is with the link above.
ok tysm
Hi
I gave the rules and stuff a go through apart from a general idea and stuff I still didn't understand most of it. I prefer hands on learning so is there a way I can play or just spectate a game so I can understand it.
You can find recorded games on YouTube and Twitch, or you can sign up for a learn-to-play session during the virtual weekends in the server’s Events.
o ty i signed up for that ty
i confused about the tickets part tho
You’d probably have to ask the Baldman Games folks who are organizing those events.
ok ty i did contact them
Can anybody give examples on the different alignments? Tried googling up them and readin some stuff but im still stuck on what my first character would be and maybe some examples would help?
I wouldn't worry about it. Alignments used to matter a few editions back, but they're basically phased or at this point. More importantly than your alignment, focus on the Personality, Bonds, Ideals, and Flaws section of your character sheet.
You'll quickly find that if you ask 10 people to describe an alignment, you'll get 10 different answers. It's a pretty flawed organization system.
Your alignment is descriptive, not pre-scriptive. Decide what the alignment is after making your character, if at all.
What's much more important is to have a character that's functional and fun mechanically, narratively, and for your group.
Ah I see, i'm doing it through dndbeyond atm since i dont have any dnd friends to help me through lol. I'll pick a more or less then if its not of huge importance :) Thank you btw!!
Currently trying to flesh her out for sure! Might try different persoectives till i like what sticks and what'd be fun :))
Where can I sign up
Check the event links in the Events channel on this server - they'll take you to sites with more info and instructions on registering.
For example the Virtual Weekend events link is here: https://discord.com/events/516367331358801950/1355230301919379626
Ugh sorry for the large embed.
How do I make a necromancer wizard in dnd beyond cause I cant get the "school of necromancy " to pop up
you need access to the 2014 player's handbook. either by paying yourself or by someone sharing the content with you
hellooo! me and my friend really want to get into dnd but we're a bit lost and have no idea where to start, does anyone have some tips? like should we start looking for groups to play with first or build our character?

okok thank you i'm gonna do that!!
Many DM ( the person in charge of the have) will want you to build your characters with them and their help but it never hurts to try making a few just to get an understanding
Would arcane trickster or thief be better for a rogue who's job it is to break into places
Like they break in log any weak areas and report to their client
Does the character use some magic to do it? Or do they break into places using old fashioned skill and finesse?
Kind of a mix
But the mix is a newer thing
Arcane trickster is the way to do it mixed. You're a third caster that way.
Thief gets no magic without items. So if magic is important to your vision, pick AT
Unless maybe you can get away with Magic Initiate or something.
They'd break into area's old fashion when they used to crime but now it's a job they look for both physical entrances and ways for magic users to enter
I like my rogues idea of being a high int dex and cha rogue due to learning bits about magic and helping/distracting people
Also I like the idea they'd blunt abour their past
In the "look mate I was once one a thief but I can elp ya. I can look through ya business for any weaknesses and ways of entrances both physical and arcane."
Sounds like Arcane Trickster would be a good fit for your character then!
Yup. Sounds to me like you've answered your own question, Molp
Honestly I like the idea of a good guy rouge that isnt just atypical robin hood
Also could give the dm some world building
For future games
I just need race now
I was thinking changling human or halfling
All 3 are good. Species has very little if any impact on class so pick which one appeals to you the most
Changling because easy disguises as a way for that test
Humans because jack of all trades
Halfling because reroll 1's and small
Changeling
Hai im new to dnd and i dont know anything but i wanna get into it

I’m literally driving to his place rn 😭 his dm is sick and called me to “make a map and get your ass over here”
tell him to DM it then lol
I was like “why can’t another one of your friends dm it” and then he hit me with the “I’m gonna make you learn as we go” so yeah I’m just trynna get any tips and tricks rq so I don’t embarrass myself in front of his dnd friends (they’ve been playing the game for like 40 years) 😂
don't think there is enough time to give u too much help daisy. tell them no is my suggestion
Yeha probs, it would be cool to learn though. My involvement has really only been just making some maps up until this point. So getting more into it would be interesting. Thanks
well then no big. they need to understand you have family and its important. just setup another time thats not close to dinner or other possible activities
@final prawn you'll figure it out, they will understand you are new and hopefully guide u
goto #find-a-game and follow the instructions on DMing a group

alright tysm!!
As a newbie what would be the best class to start with
Sorry, just a few questions, I hope this is the right place. I have played with some character builders and made a couple through Roll20 or D&D beyond, but... are these playable? Does a created character have to be approved by a DM or in a campaign created by a DM? I just want to know if I am just spinning my wheels... Should I read any particular D&D book or Guide that will help me create a character for a particular campaign?? I really want to just play, what is the best way to just get into a beginner or short game just to get acclimated to the process??
i will repost this in the channel listed above.
As u said go to the #find-a-game and follow those steps. Most DMs will either look at what u made so far and help u tweak it or have u start from scratch, just depends on every DM
Narrator that HIGHLY depends on what you want to play. They all have their quirks
Thank you
hello all
I typically do sorcerrer because idk
Yo.

These are some helpful links. If you have more specific questions feel free to ask
well I guess I know the basics
Is it possible to try to be a Dungeon master with no prior knowledge in DND aside from podcasts.... Me and my friends want to try out DND and just do a campaign with us. So I plan to take up the role. I am planning to do one of the Starter sets.
I started DMing with zero experience 35+ years ago and still love it to this day. Starting with a module and at least having heard some podcasts it a great start
Thank you, the only one i found is the dragon of stormwreck isle on d&d beyond, would there be anywhere else I can find other starter sets or starter campaigns for D&D? I heard the Lost Mine of Phendelver is good from youtube but its not on d&d beyond.
So any published books can be found on D&D beyond but you have to pay for many of them. I don’t personally use them so I can’t suggest any specifically, I’ve heard stormwreck is pretty good
Okay! Thanks!! If I have more in depth questions I'll be sure to ask. Idk if I should ask in the dm discussion since I might be too new at it to ask there hahaha
You can find it as phandelver and below thr Shattered obliques, and it'd fantastic
THANKS SO MUCH! Should I get the physical copy? Or should i keep it digital as my first one .o.
Physical is better in my opinion
Awww they dont ship to my country...
oh thats a shame, sorry to hear that
finally got to play d&d recently, i had a lot of fun! im interested in maybe some day writing my own settings/adventures/etc and dming but im sure it'll be a few months or longer before then
Yoo I’m new to d&d only did my first one shot yesterday
yooo hell yeah man, i was in the same boat—i’m actually dming my session one today, and would totally recommend planning out stories or even just world building for fun
thatd be cool
did you play a oneshot or are you doing a campaign?
i think it was a oneshot
its a pirate adventure in the forgotten realms that was in a little booklet the owner of the game store wrote
Look for locals in ur area
hiya everyone 😄 I'm entirely new to DnD and can't really find anyone locally. Does anyone have tips on finding them, or should I just try to find a group online?
Look for gaming shops near you. Google should help u with that. Online is also fun and a bit easier to find folks. Also MANY libraries are adding D&D groups to their things to do. If you use the Nextdoor app, thats how i found my local group
Places to check
- local gaming/comic book stores
- libraries
- social clubs, community centers, and places of worship
- if you're in education, your school, college, or university
- community colleges often have activity spaces and notice boards for them too
- websites for local activities such as meetup, facebook, council or parish websites etc
Hello 👋
Hello Maul
How are you doing? I just joined
I've been looking for a new group to play with since I haven't played in years
I’m well thanks! Check out #find-a-game and follow those steps. U can find groups and or post what you’re looking for. I’m about to post for my groups lol
Nice! What kind of stuff are you running?
I run D&D 5e campaigns
5e (2014) or 5e (2024) ?
mix of both. Most players like the 24 ruleset better but they work together so I don't mind em mixed. I
I keep some rules from 14 that I think they broke in 24
so how i can help bro 🙂
no worries, just DM me and I’ll guide you properly, no problem at all
Oh yeah sure go ahead
Is it possible to play online ?
Hi am still new to dnd never played before
welcome canis. check out the pinned messages for great links. if you get ready to find a group or want to post what type of group you want, head to #find-a-game and follow the EASY to follow steps
Ohh ok
plus a bot is likely to put the links in here in a minute lol
click the lfg tag i just posted and follow the steps. pretty easy to do 🙂
Ya figured it out
sweet!!!
Hello Masters of DND! I have come with a question most ingenious!
askith ye question of most ingeniousness
I have crafted a Human Wizard to partake with an adventure myself. However, I have come to the conclusion that I don't have the necessary knowledge to proceed.
So here's my inquiry. Can a Human Mage learn Deep Speech as their Bonus Language?
If you have read the section on Wizards and built them based on that along with having the willingness to have fun and be imaginative, you have everything you need lol
In my world, yes but that is 100% up to your DM as it would not be common. Maybe have a reason why a human would know it
Oh. Is that section inside this server? I have not seen any--... please give me a moment.
I wanted this human to have his reason for adventure be tied to his backstory. And let it be as simple of a reason as possible.
Tis Human Wizard is a library assistant, you see.
run it by yer DM and see what they say. If the city he is would have underdark races visit it and maybe he found a book - undercommon for dummies - in the library lol.
For some humoruous reason, he encoutered a worn book and thought it was just a normal one. Turns out, it was a book about Deep Speech-- something along those lines.
I'd buy it as a wizard learning from a book, but thats me lol
Ohh~ So it is possible! I thank thee! But do you mind answering a few of my other inquiries?
This still is about the creative liberties of character creation.
Hi everyone, new DM here.
Well.. to be completely honest. I just happened to learn that Deep Speech is arguably the rarest language there is, and I became unhealthily curious about it.
Hello, Pagemaster!
If that is okay with you. I'll try to not take up much of your time.
Its its an option you can pick from you can know deepspeach if its NOt then the answer will normaly by No
no worrie at alls, just DM me and I’ll guide you properly, no problem
Oh ok
Hello everyone
I’m available for questions
Also new players I’m available for training you guys
#looking-for-dm I am a new player in the timezone +1
Anybody who needs another player?
Hello!
hi
question, can I beg for a vampire to make me one.
Technically yeah
I mean yeah
hmmmmmmm
is this a literal or...
What?
Ohhh no as in like cool vampire
spasibo
Jonathan try #paid-looking-for-game or #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community
But I guess sick as in ill too cuz it's literally eating your blood
K thanks
@normal trellis I just PM you
but that's once~
Well yeah just once you'll be ill and cool then after that you'll just be cool
is there a said PHB RAW for that btw?
Nope
If you want to be bitten you can
Fdm did you mean dm
no buffs? o.o
At least I don't know of
Cus you are not there
Maybe you could homebrew something
ok, but debuffs are likely obvious I guess
Like garlic silver and sticks
Sun
Imagine you are the strongest vampire ever and you just get beaten to death by a stick
That too
The stick rolled a 21
real. I guess the buffs would be?
Umm... what are vampire buffs?
yeah...
Dark vision? Turn into a bat
ehhh
Yeah...
I just wanted to say Hi! I'm new here lol
Anxious in a group of new people
hi
Good evening
Hello
How are u prince
We are getting foreign players on here
Just a name I came up with. Inspired by Lothric from Dark Souls 3
#looking-for-community hopefully from timezone +1
Cool. How are you doing?
Im okay. You?
@normal trellis look through that and see if you can find someone
Look though what
Oh? Are you running it?
I get the feeling lmao. Everytime I run my own games 😭
Through
Looking for community
Yup. I’m only anxious because I’m going to have guests listening in that are from my first ever pro game. This group is my longest running group so not worried bout them lol
interesting
Thats also fair. Stage freight, mayhaps? Sometimes people listen in when I run. Causes me to stumble over my words.
Do you have any specific plans in running?
I like listening in on sessions
I’ve had listeners but these are the first that will be paying for my service as a preview to what they will be getting. My biggest fear is they just killed the bbeg last time so it’s gonna be a slow go to get treasure and makes their next moves
Sometimes that happens
I’ve been DMing for 35+ years so not worried about the game just want to mak
sorry what's a bbeg...
Sure it’s fun for the newbies lol
Big bad evil guy
Big bad evil guy
thank you
The first big boss for the campaign with two more to go
Makes sense! I can understand the anxiety there.
Also, DMing for 35+ is wild. I bet your games are awesome 👌
Awww thanks. I guess they are since i Have many players that have been with me for years. Lol
It would make sense. 35+ is heavily experiences both as a DM and in the D&D world as a whole.
It involved immense storytelling and a talent for portraying it correctly and efficiently. You would have had a lot of time to develop that talent. So it would make a lot of sense!
If anyone wishes to listen in, dm me
I also have 35 years of experience as well
We old hahaha
Yes we are
As many games as me and @lost silo have played in and DMed we really enjoy the game
That's also fair
i somehow got very interested in dnd just today while messing with chat gpt with a friend how uncommon is that as an entry point
I admit to getting a lot of ideas from BG3
That's what I'm playing rn actually lol
BG3 is over powered
