Strange. That should work as long as you select "Fighter (Legacy)" instead of "Fighter"

Uh... As a rogue, can I do something like this?
Sneak attack with weapon > offhand weapon atk > hide
Potentially yes
If we assume you're holding two different weapons, both have the Light property (which lets you make an additional Bonus Action attack) and at least one of the has the Nick weapon mastery (make the Light attack as part of your Attack action rather than a bonus action) and your character has the Weapon Mastery trait with the Nick weapon you're holding as the chosen weapon
- Attack action with Dagger 1 (Light, Nick)
- On a hit, apply sneak attack damage
- As part of the same Attack action, attack with Dagger 2 using Light + Nick
- Hide as a Bonus Action using the rogues Cunning Action
Note that D&D doesn't have "offhand" weapons as a rules concept, there's no primary/secondary or main/offhand distinction
Note that the above is only possible using the 2024 core rules, as it requires using the Weapon Mastery rule which was introduced in 2024
Ah... So you can only choose between second atk or re-hiding without the nick weapon mastery
Given you only have one Bonus action, yes
Ah so most of the time rapier is a better starting equipment
Do i send the DM a direct message or do I just say I’m intrested in the thread if I’m looking for a game?
Usually you reply in the thread, unless the post gives specific instructions to PM the DM
Sorry for the ping, davyd
s'all good
Since shortsword has the vex property, if theres an enemy within 5ft of my enemy, can I do sneak attack twice?
You can only apply sneak attack once per turn
Ah... I see...
Hello
I'm a newbie
Can I switch from rapier to bow mid fight?

Yep, you can drop, stow, draw, or sheath a weapon using various actions
You get one free interaction with an object per turn, which can include pulling out or putting away a weapon
You also get to pull our or put away a weapon once per attack you make
Finally, you can also interact with a weapon using the Utilize action
If I ask how to find the room, should I ask here?
Sorry, I'm not good at English, maybe it's how to join the game.

Question for articifer is there a limit of what you could do with an item for example could you make a table have legs and feet so that it could run
there is no simple answer to this. Artificers certainly have limits. the rules pretty clearly say what they can do, and nothing more is implied.
however, flavor is your friend, and artificer especially is meant for reflavoring their mechanics:
for example, their spells are not actually spells like a wizards, but rather supposed to be flavored as magic gadgets that produce that spell's effect.
to your question, you could reflavor a Steel defender (Battle Smith subclass) as an animated table for example
Artificers also get access to the Animate Objects spell, which does exactly that.
true, though that is at level 17

Actually height or just what’s the difference?
So small creatures are about 2-4 tall and medium being 5-7
alright perfect. thx a lot
Do you use dnd beyond for adventures or how does this work?
Does a character sheet needs to be 100% completed in order to play with that character? Or can i leave gender, age, hair color and other stuff like that blank if I have an image of the character?
Depends on your DM! Some are willing to play with the specifics still undefined. Others will require everything to be filled out.
DnD Beyond is kind of like a big portfolio where you can keep all your Character Sheets and rulebook info. You don't actually play games through it, directly.
Hello! I've been playing for about a year now (total of 5 sessions 😭😭) and thought I should come here!!
If you leave the fluff stuff off of your sheet I doubt many people would be a real hardass about it, lol.
The real reason a character sheet exists is as a reference for when you need to look up which statistic to use, and to take notes. The rest is kind of all in your head.
Hey, I'm new have only played 2 games in my liffe and thought this would be the place to play more

@tawny kelp I'm looking for one tn
Can Anyone help me I'm new to d&d and have a few questions
No one can say if they can help if they don't know what your questions are
Note that finding a game takes time. While it's possible you might find a game that you can play tonight, it's a little unlikely. Most games tend to take a couple of days or weeks to plan before they even get started.
Best just to ask and see who answers
I already have the game put together just need the characters but thnx for the heads up
Guys.. I watched some videos about the game.. I've got some questions:
I don't have a character sheet, no dice.. And you guys can help through the game.. Right? 😁😁
Thankfully in this day and age, dice and character sheets can be found online!
I'm just gonna play on my phone.. If that's alright?
Thank god
Playing on just your phone limits your options to some degree, as certain Virtual Table Top (VTT) programs don't play well with mobile devices, but it's certainly not impossible
The thing is.. I don't live in country that sells those things
Oh.. I have a pc.. But it has a problem connecting to the WiFi
So..what now?
Should I wait for a game or... What?
Once you've read though the free rules and gotten a good idea of how to play the game, you can make a practice character sheet or hop in and start looking for a game.
Free rules?.. You mean those above?

Yup, they can be found right up there
You can't play without having a basic grasp of the rules, but you don't need to memorise or even read them all
Start with Chapter 1 (Playing the Game) and then move on to Chapter 2 (Creating a Character)
Remember that's it's a handbook, not a novel; you're supposed to read the section(s) what you're looking for, not read it left to right
After the first two chapters, you have the knowledge necessary to orientate yourself through the rest of the rules and DnD as a whole
I know that there are players and a DM.. There are classes, races, abilities, strengths.. And some other things
Yes, those chapters explain those things
If you must only read a small portion, read chapters 1 & 2, then the few sections pertaining to the species and class you wish to play as
Those two chapters explain how the game works and how you make a character. From there you basically jump around the rules referencing things as needed
But at some point, you will have to read rules. It's inescapable.
Remember that Dungeons and Dragons isn't free-form RP. It's a set of rules that the players and DM use to make things fair for everyone.
If reading rules doesn't sounds appealing to you, then you should look into rules-light RPG's
I've read most of the rules

New to DnD. Player a couple of seasons and have some friends that want me to DM a one shot to see if they like it. Im overwhelmed finding something simple for them but more so me as a new player and first time DM. Any suggestions?
want to hop in a call and go over some stuff?
Also most important question:
- do you want to DM?
https://winghornpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/the_wild_sheep_chase_v2.pdf
Also this is an easy one to run
I don't mind DMing. I can't do a call tonight. I just don't want to let them down. Is DMing as hard as it seems?
I don't mind DMing. I can't do a call tonight. I just don't want to let them down. Is DMing as hard as it seems?
DMing is hard. But its harder in your head. There are skills to learn, but don't put the pressure on yourself. Do the best you can because its everyone's first time. Make sure your friends understand its the first time for you too.
You'll be fine.
Thanks bro. That means a lot.
Yeah man. I DM as a side hustle and I panic before every game. I've been DMing for 2 years as a gig, and ten years total. I still get nervous. Practice makes perfect. GO with you your gut.
Hell yeah. I think what sucks for me is that I am still learning how to play as a PC. So m not sure how rolling works. But like you said as long as they know I'm new I think it a perfect opportunity for all of us to learn together.
For rolls my best advice is:
- Is there a reasonable chance the player can fail this?
- How hard would it be?
If yes to 1. roll. 5= easy, but only terrible luck would really screw this over. 10= Normal 15- challenging 20= Difficult 25= Very Difficult 30= Impossible
And keep a player sheet in front of you with the names of all the skills. They are self explanatory and go with your gut. It may not always be the right call, but you'll learn each skill better as you play.
as a beginner, I used the 5, 10, 15, 20 system as a guide and never broke from those numbers. As you DM more you start making more abstract number checks and the places in between
If anyone attempts anything beyond walking to somwehere and picking an ordinary object up, you may want to roll for it. Just make sure rolling has consequence. If something is going to happen regardless of the skill of a player, then don't roll. Like rolling to see if they can see something in the room. If the object is visible and on the table, no matter what they roll, they will see it, but maybe the higher they roll, they might notice more specific details behind it. Don't hide important stuff behind a skill check. Otherwise the plot grinds to a halt.
Sorry if that was too much
No it's all good. If I'm going to DM I want to be as prepared as possible.
You will over prepare you first time. When you feel as if you can't do anything else because you don't know what the players are going to do, then you have finished prep
Dnd looks fun. I never done it before. I kinda played it ig I made a character and had someone invite me to the game. It was from a mutual friend and it was not as exciting? I was new and the dm was getting mad with me lol. I was also like not messing around but yk messing around. I wanted to start a bar fight and the dm said let’s not do that.

I can see both sides of the story. Normally in a game, there’s an unwritten social contract that the players will have the same expectations about the game- including the amount of tomfoolery. Starting a bar fight may have been seen as derailing the campaign in some small aspect, or at least causing undue chaos when everyone else had something in mind to do. As always, we only get one side of the story, but ideally the DM should be open to communication about expected player behaviors and sidetracks
No hate to the dm ofc I just ig prefer more tomfoolery then seriousness but I do like it when it’s needed
Hello everyone, I am new to D&D, and I want to learn tbh. Well, I’m not entirely new I have played the tile building type, which was fun, but I would love to learn the original game
Also I apologize for sending a message between you two
Choosing the “chaos” option can be a tricky thing. It fundamentally changes the encounter your party finds themselves in, but there’s a lot of potential risks both at and above the table. Whenever you choose such an option it’s important to consider what’s happening in the scene around you. Using the bar fight as an example.
- On the DM’s side, they now have to quickly make a combat encounter, including the stats of everyone who’s participating. The resolution and consequences also have to be made up, which can detract from the main adventure.
- On the players’ side, whatever they were doing, assuming they’re all in the bar, stops to give attention to the bar fight. The spotlight automatically moves to the encounter instead of shifting between the players as the original encounter goes.
This is not to say the “chaos” option is impossible to pull off, just that you should have an idea of when it’d be ok to do
Howdy. See that big post just above? Free rules and assistance right there for getting started.
Welcome! There’s a bunch of newbie resources in this channel’s pins as well as #learn-to-play including the Free Rules. I suggest reading through the first few sections and making a practice character as you go along. Don’t feel pressured to memorize everything, but at least familiarize yourself. Of course, we’re always here and happy to help answer any & all specific rules-learning questions!
Ohh ok thank you Ig that make sense, again I’m new so ty for information
DMing looks harder from the outside than it actually is. I think it's certainly more work compared with playing a PC, but everyone has to eventually start from zero with it. I recommend watching Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series on YouTube. His thesis is that DMing is easy and fun, and the videos try to make that case with helpful guidance.
Is it just a d20 that I need or do I need other die?
You'll need other dice. :)
For example, when rolling damage after hitting with a longsword, the rules will say that you roll "1d8" for the damage (plus some other stuff, specific to the character).
What are all the dice I would need?
Dice often come in sets - and those are all the ones you need!
But to be specific, D&D uses the following dice:
- 1d4
- 1d6
- 1d8
- 1d10
- 1d12
- 1d20
If you're looking to buy some physical dice of your own, you want a polyhedral dice set. They can be found various places online, hobby and game stores and the like.
(There's potential for me to get uhm achtually'd here with 1d2 and 1d100, which I recognize. But I personally think they're derivative of the "core" ones above! Or said another way, you don't need these ones.)
The d100 is usually done by including two d10s in a dice set (fairly standard from what I've seen) and a d3 is done by rolling a d6 as explained in the rules
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#D3
I don't think I've seen a d2, but you can do a coinflip in that case 😄
It's a very flat die.
Dope thank you for the information. I read some of the rules, but had to scheme through a bit because I’m at work. I did however, do the little tutorial online
Skim*
Are bards like useful in any situation
yes
Well I feel like you could be biased
Bards are famously flexible.
They literally have a trait called "Jack of All Trades" which should give you an idea of how much flexibility is baked into the class
You can focus them in many areas, if you so choose.
Hi :))
Well bc I have poor knowlegge of classes that aren’t like barbarian, hunter rogue and paladin and I’ve never heard of someone using bards bc they don’t have like insane combat
You can always go over the class if you're curious:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Bard
The game is typically not 100% combat, and besides which, combat includes other aspects beyond reducing enemy HP.
hi! this may be a weird question but, are there any solely text based types of DnD? i have a very noisy house and am constantly on the move but lowk wanna try a campaign at least once, it would just be so much easier thru a written form. is that like not possible?
Sure. You're looking for what are called play-by-post (PBP) games!
PBP games are rarer, but you can find them.
Besides this server, check the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search “PBP” or “play by post” as keywords using Discord's Explore function!
oh wow this is so much more help than i expected! thanks so much this is super appreciated!!
Can A high elf rogue trigger sneak attack with firebolt?
You can only apply Sneak Attack to an attack roll made with a finesse or a ranged weapon, so unfortunately no
Can someone explain oneshots? Are they better for newcomers or should i look for a normal campaign?
A one shot is just a single session game
They are a D&D game designed to be completed in one session
They're much lower commitment, which can be good for new players but you don't have to start there
Personally I prefer one shots even now because campaigns stress me out, but plenty of people prefer the opposite
I mostly dont know anything about dnd. I looked videos and know the basics, but are oneshots like a real campaign or are they a "cheaper" version
Neither is better, they're just different
Are they anything ike a real campaign
A long term ongoing campaign is what many people think of when they think of d&d, but that doesn't make one shots invalid
They're just shorter. You're still playing the same game.
Ok
A one shot is like a movie, whereas a campaign is like a full season of a show. Neither is worse than the other.
One shots are a slice of the experience that is being apart of a campaign
Yeah, it's just a different form of storytelling.
Another symptom of it being self contained is you can try wackier things, throw caution to the wind. Having no continuation to think about is freeing in a way.
Hi, I’m learning about dnd and wanted to know if the pocket expert book was worth getting as I know nothing of the game really? I’m wanting to read about it so I know what to expect when I play :)

It’s called Dungeons and Dragons Pocket Expert by Stacy King, if anyones familiar with it would love to know if it’s worth it
I'd imagine very few folks here would be familiar. It's common to refer new players to the rules themselves rather than someone else's summary of them.
Ahh I see thank you! I will check out the rules themselves for now
It could be a useful resource, but maybe see if you can borrow it from a library if you're worried about plunking down the money.
I can't wait to start playing again I look forward to finding someone to run a dm.
How common are virtual games? I don’t really have anyone local that plays and I figure maybe trying to find an online group could be fun.
Very common. I suspect that's how a majority of folks on this server play, in fact.
Also thank you for the help before!

Thank you 🙏
If me asking to often is spamming I fully apologize but is there an official app I can download for a character sheet or to help me make my character?

is the artificer an actual class or fan made? and are they any good
They're an official class, they're just not in the PHB or free rules. And yes, they're cool. They're very versatile and useful, especially as a support class.
They were originally printed in Eberron: Rising from the Last War, and got reprinted with a little bit of new material in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
Is anyone making a campaign I haven't seen a new post on looking for players
Not sure where you're looking, newest post in #looking-for-players is literally only around 20 minutes ago
Keep an eye on the channel, new games are posted every day
I would join if I had the time. Sadly I won’t until June 19th. Once I am though I’ll be looking around for games to join ^^
Okay?
How often are there any new campaigns
Fairly regularly posted. You can also check out #looking-for-community for discord servers that host games
Oh okay thank you
Is there a channel for looking for campaign recommendations?
#looking-for-players has DMs that are looking for players
Looking to borrow a newer player for a quick test. Should take at most 30 mins 🙂 (No experience needed)
Sorry, I meant like campain books and stuff
Are they called modules?
Oh I see. There are channels dedicated to the modules on the server under #1029833015423143957. DMs do post module games they're running in #looking-for-players too.
Wait... do ppl do multiple modules in the same campaign?
modules are really just the backbone structure.
More of a suggestion on how to run something.
You can pick parts from multiple kodules to combine into tour own work of art
is someone willing to be a dungeon master for 3 very very new players
Check #find-a-game to learn how to make a post to find a DM using this server!
Oh, interesting! I never thought of that possibility until I just saw a random YT comment casual mention doing that
@stiff fossil ill pm ya
On a similar note, does that mean modules can have flexible tones and stuff? Cause I want to do a more lighthearted adventure, but it feels like a lot of DnD modules are kind of dark
modules are basically a suggestion if anything.
they give you some framework to go off of, but you can and most likelt will always modify thinfs to fit your players
Think of the module as a guide, and as inspiration for the adventure you are running. Sometimes you might want to stick to it closely, other times you might make lots of changes, or just use some bits and pieces and then use your imagination for the rest.
Thats the fun of DnD using countless resources to create your own story.
No two sessions are ever the same
Hili i’m new and idk how to make builds so idk if this is good cuz I only based it on how cool it sounded but what do yall think of a blood hunter dual wielding whips?
Any build is viable 🙂
But it's good to note the importance of out of combat capabilities.
There is more to dnd than just combat
you will also want to pay attention to the focus of the story you are playing in.
There's no benefit to dual-wielding whips since it lacks the Light property
Oh alr alr
I just want my character to be strong mostly cuz of her lore 😔
which you can do 🙂
just note that when building your character youll have to make sacrifices in certain "skills" to buff up other ones.
It all depends on how your DM wishes to run the adventure and what they allow / dont allow.
Speak with your DM to figure out what your restrictions are
Okei tyyy
Also keep in mind Blood Hunter is not an official class so it’s generally up to the DM if they allow it or not
how play dnd
look at this @kind pawn
thanks

Wanted to ask if someone streams an dnd game coz it better to learn via watching 😅
Fr
Lots of D&D stream on YouTube and Twitch
I’ve seen one before
I like Dungeons Dude's Dungeons of Drakkenheim campaign
Just keep in mind that many streams are for entertainment first and less about teaching you how to play D&D per se.
Ok
Still they can be helpful in seeing how others play D&D
Additionally, if you watch an official module being played, there is a solid chance for spoilers.
So try watching something that you dont think youll end up playing
Thanks for the info
Even if you do, while you might know spoilers, your character doesnt 🙂
hello o/
im kinda new to D&D only played campaign for 6-7 months nothing else.
want to run one shot for my friends any tips? most if them didn't play too 😅
Hey there!
I create and run One Shots focused on beginner players and first timers.
I'd be happy to sit down and help you design a one shot
Feel free to reach out to me directly if that sounds interesting for ya
If you'd like help with DMing, we have a #dm-discussion channel where you can talk to fellow DMs to brainstorm and get advice

Hello! I just joined this server and am having trouble traversing it. I'm looking to join a party but I can't find any that allow paper sheets as an alternative to DNDBeyond or Roll20. Any advice?
PDF version of the character sheet: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Gl that's all I can say. I'm new too

I know how to play, I just work better with physical sheets.
It’s easier to make a paper thing for your character I agree. You could write down feet effects and also do the rolling on the back of the sheet. The other two you have to buy stuff for the feets.
Draw your character in the box
Paper sheets are so much easier for me but I can't find any listings in #looking-for-players that allow the paper sheets as an alternative
Like, physical paper, not a PDF or something like that. I know how to fill them out so much better and I don't have to read through mountains of stuff or flip through tab after tab to find my stuff. It's also free-
Finding games on a digital platform such as discord is going to naturally bias towards digital tools, also a lot of DMs like to be able to share their content with their players
Be nice if a dm would just say yes to you taking a picture of it with your phone then sending it to him.
You also may be asked to roll digitally. Some digital character sheets allow you to roll virtually. Could be helpful if you want to be trusted by your DM or if they require proof of roll
There are DMs out there who'll allow paper sheets or other such alternatives, just gotta keep looking
Helloooo
I'll happily roll digitally and send pictures of the sheet, I have no complaints with those kinds of rules, I just want to use a paper sheet for simplicity and budget sake :]
There are free digital sheets, such as D&D Beyond
Generally speaking the tools are free, the content isn't
But that's true of physical sheets
Thanks for the advice, I'll keep searching, I'll eventually find someone.
If you own the books physically (and the DM isn't content sharing them) you can use the homebrew tools to add your content in (just don't publish it)
D&D beyond or Roll20 is your best bet for digital
DndBeyond isn't entirely free so I'd rather use physical where everything is free and available
The character sheets on D&D Beyond are 100% free
Not some races or features
They’re until you get to the feet part
Some races and features are behind paywall
Yes, just like physical
If you have to pay for it in a book, you have to pay for it on D&D beyond or roll20 or Fantasy Grounds
When I used to play a lot as a player, and I do not know if this is allowed per se, but I just used a human race build and then modified all the features and traits after character creation in the "add custom __" to modify it to the races I had access to in my physical books
But the character sheet app is free, just like how a blank character sheet is free (well, the PDF is, you still have to print it)
The only tools on DDB that isn't free is Maps, that requires a Master tier subscription
However, all other tools--character sheets, homebrew, digital dice rolling and sharing--are free to use
Honestly, most races/species are the same stat-wise. So just modify a few a traits and features after character creation to fit your chosen species
Please use the LFG channels to solicit/organize games - it's off-topic outside of those channels. Thanks!
Aaaaaa pinged in error
The dm will share content so you don’t need to buy the books
Hello! I'm new to DND but I've always had an interest in learning how to play as well as creating a character as well as exploring a new world. the most experience I have playing DND was in highschool with a very loose "plot" super excited to get into it!

Evening
Hi there
So like
Im new to this and busy what ive wanted to play for a while
Is there like a way to find games that dont do voice chat?
Yep, you need to search for play-by-post (PBP) games. Or ones that specify they're text-based.
Oh i see
Are u the razorwing of guide writing fame
This D&D Beyond article gives a good overview of PBP games, which are rarer, but you can find them.
Besides this server, check the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search “PBP” or “play by post” as keywords using Discord's Explore function!
I don't know about fame, but I did write a Looking for Group/Game guide.
Thank you
I read the article, it seems to fit what I was thinking, now I just need to find one that wont fry my brain lol
Good luck!
Hi
how do i play dnd online?
?tag new online
And also use #find-a-game
Why I can't submit my own request?
Did I do anything wrong?
Hey I’m new here anything I should know it’s my first time playing dnd I need help
Ask away
what do you need help with?
Idk how to join a game I wanna know who to talk to
if you want to join an online game there are many places to find them, Discord servers, roll20.net, reddit /lfg etc
here on this server, check out #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community
Dnd isn’t like an MMO you have to search of a game and then there is some prep before a campaign can start
for real life games, local game stores or friends/family can be a first stop to find a game
Ok
I have an introduction to DnD session I do on occasion and I teach people the basics and we play a basic game of DnD with the characters that are created
I would like to join that
New players really enjoy it and learn a lot
In some ways yes
BG3 is based on the current rules of DnD but it does make a lot of changes too
Ok
so if you actually play DnD, you will find a lot of things are familiar, but might be slightly different.
and of course, you got an actual human running the game and not a computer, so that will have a massive impact
True
I’m planning on starting a new class next week
Really which book you gonna do
Mostly the players handbook
Ok which kind of story you shooting for traditional or homebrew
For the first time players I usually do a basic dungeon crawl
I was told about ones where it’s based off different kinds of other games
Like for I heard there’s one for like London
Yes but I will have to give you the information through a PM
I’m not allowed to do that on here
I can help the new players on here with basic information about DnD and how it’s actually played
Ok how would we contact
ok if someone is 21 hp (full)
and there's an attack that did 21 dmg to them
do they instantly die?
or do they roll death saves?
death saves
you only instantly die if the excess damage you take is equal or more than your max health, so in your example, you would have to take 42 damage or more in that one attack to instantly die
but if you were at 1 HP (out of 21), you would instantly die if you took 22 damage
Omegon explained it well, here's the rules link for that:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#Droppingto0HitPoints
Has anyone gotten Spellcards yet ? Sadly there are only digital Downloads for Europe. Should i make them myself ?
How do you become a creative dungeon master? Like, it takes me a while to make up something in a second because of my rapid-naming dyslexia. I find it hard to come up or think of words that my friends would find unambiguous.
I just bought the players handbook 2024 in dnd beyond and i didnt get it. The money went from my bank account and i got an email that i bought it. What do i do?😭
My players and I use spell cards and Love Them! Can you get stuff from Amazon? That’s how I bought mine
I havnt found any for DnD 2024, our current campaign, that are from europe. I dont really want to pay 20 bucks shipping :/
Ahhhh I didn’t think about the 2024 rule set, ours are 2014. And can’t blame you on shipping.
yea i would have thought after 3 or 4 months the first people would want to make some cash, but i only find digital downloads that have lackluster designs imo
wait... i dont get it
why death save if the damage is equal to your max health
you make death saves if you fall to 0 HP
you only instantly die if the EXCESS damage is equal or higher than your max HP
ah
my bad
no worries
Are you talking about times when you have to describe something in detail?
That and when you have to improvise on something that made your campaign completely off the rail
Descriptions you can practice. Get a word list, keep it handy. Little details can help.
For describing things in detail, I would begin by trying to incorporate at least 2 of the 5 senses into your descriptions. You're likely already describing how things look, but how does that alley way smell? How does the crowd around the players sound? Does the ground feel wobbly and poorly paved?
These candles, are they smokeless, bright, flickering, crude? It genuinely doesn't take much. You're only ever giving an impression of a place.
Situations, it's good to start simple.
Hello hello~ I am new ✨
Howdy.
Helloo
How is everyone doing?
I come looking for players tbh but if the vibes are good I may stay a while~
Uuhh they have maps 👀 I am totally staying~♡
Feel free to hang out and chat. Mind the channels, they're for what they say ( #channel-guide ). Enjoy!
Yep u,u I follow the rules, unless I forget them, in that case feel free to remind me~
As for improv skills, that's largely up to practice. One exercise you can do is to describe a scenario to a friend and have them interject with an idea, random or not. On your own time, how well can you incorporate the idea into your scenario? Over time you'll grow the creative skill and how fast you can be creative.
On campaign derailment, that's not always a sign to brush up on your improv skills. When a campaign gets sidetracked it's important to investigate the why. In my experience complete derailment most often happens from two causes:
- When too much chaos happens on the players behalf such as murderhobo-ing or ignoring plot hooks
- When a DM has made plot advancement hinge on an event going a certain way
The former issue is something to talk to your players about. The latter can be fixed as simply as asking yourself "ok what happens if X does/doesn't happen?"
Think about motivations and capabilities. What do they want, what can they do and what's the obstacle to getting it?
Mornin!
Mmornin~♡
Welcome to the world of dnd
I've been in it for a while 🤭 and tbh I wish the days were longer so I can play more of it~
Ah very nice, and I never actually played dnd to be honest
I have a game with spots available, you can check it out on the #looking-for-players
I'm good, but thanks for the offer, I'm just usually too busy to play.
Fair u,u I'm looking for a job rn and I feel like I'll have to drop a game or 2 when I get it q.q sad
adulting does get in the way of D&D and it is stupid lol
Yea jobs make it quite hard to play because I'm a night worker so it's quite hard since I sleep through most of the morning and kinda abit into the afternoon. I also have other reasons why I'm always busy but that's just some responsibilities I gotta take care of.
That's just life unfortunately
Gets in the way of dnd and other stuff
I'm sure I could make something work, it's dnd time all the time somewhere in the world 🤭 and if I have to play with Japanese people to have a game so be it~ (I'm studying Japanese ~w~ playing with them would be so fun~)
Ah that's interesting I'm learning German
Uuh~ I like German too u,u it's a beautiful language and at times it can get quite funny 🤭 when you start smashing words together haha
I tried French before but the motivation went out of the windows :P
Let's please get back to D&D
Hey, im kinda having a hard time managing/choosing the right spells. Lvl 3 Star Druid. Especially since i can change them on a long rest.
Sounds like a good topic for #character-discussion
Generally I'd suggest having a mix of attack, save, and buff/heal spells.
Guys as someone who is new to DM-ing and this in general, what's the general consensus on 2024 vs 2014? Because ngl this is making it that much more confusing. I'm lost.
Like what rulebook should I read? How do I enable/disable the 2014/2024 rules? DnD beyond isn't really a good website for a beginner
I think to get started, going pure 2024 makes sense. Imo it's a pretty solid improvement upon the 2014 version.
On DDBeyond, this means turning off all of the sources.
Later, you can always add the options back in. Expanded Rules are usually a good call for more options. The others are only needed if you want to do something specific that was only possible in 2014 (not generally an issue with new players).
okay, I will try that then
If I wanna go pure 2024 what else should I turn off?
like my problem is there are so many options when making a character in dnd beyond which aren't explained at all
The ones I mentioned are all that is needed. And I suppose Partnered Content as well, which you likely haven't purchased any of.
Okay
thank you
@hearty escarp what about the optional features?
Optional Class Features
Customize Your Origin
Should I check these or leave unchecked
This is not explained, but those don't actually do anything if you use 2024 classes and species. Might as well check them off, but leaving them on doesn't change things.
oh okay, btw one of my players wants to be a Thiefling, but I don't see them in the race list on just 2024. Why is that?
You likely haven't purchased the Player's Handbook. Tieflings aren't in the Free Rules.
oh, so if the player wants to be a thiefling and we do 2024 he has to purchase it?
guess we gotta do 2014 then, which complicates stuff even more for me
Yes.
A second option is that someone shares the content with them if they own the PHB and via the DDBeyond master subscription.
that's so stupid. Thieflings went from being a free class to premium one
okay one more question if you can bear with me. Can I somehow disable the 2024 and just go with 2014?
As a third option, you could enable Legacy content and use the legacy tiefling species.
And no, I don't think there is a toggle to use 2014 only.
So plenty of people are in a similar boat as you.
I'm getting out of this boat though. This is far to complicated for me. I just wanted to have fun with my friends.
its Tiefling btw, without the h
There is no pdf version of the 2014 free books huh?
I wanted to be a dungeon master once for my friends
there is
It's not pretty.
thats the pdf for the 2014 free rules, you also can use this https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014 without paying anthing
Uh... Why? And why is it 2018?
Ah thanks, I just wanted to have a printed version of it
Is there an Online game for DnD? I dont have the physical board and dont have irl friends that are interested in playing DnD
Like game as in apk? I dont think so....
I meant like a site, DnD as a mobile game seems idk
I mean, there are countless ways to play DnD online if that is what you are asking
But if you want to play dnd online, you can check #looking-for-players
Tips : If you can't match the time with other players, find the one with pbp (play by post) label on it
Ive been trying to find one since i got interested in playing DnD back in 2019 but couldnt find one
DnD Beyond, Roll 20, Foundry, Table Top Sim, etc... there are countless VTT (virtual Table top) systems that you can utilize
I see, thank you both of you, ill try it out if i ever get time
Its better to look for local discord server so you can speak the same language and most importantly have the same timezone
Hello ! Im very interested in dnd ( i have watched too many hours on the subject ngl) but huuuuuuuuh, i have a tiny problem... I'm the only one that wants to play it in my freind group🥲 . I even resorted to try solo play with ChatGPT as my DM 😭 . And its not like i can buy stuff, i'll only have the 2024 phb and any free online info for a long time... help me please ? Sorry for the long message and the time waste.
Hey there ^^ Is there a channel where i can look for new players or new games?
#looking-for-players and #looking-for-dm maybe ??? I'm as new as you are.
#find-a-game has the instructions for using those channels. You could also try LFG on Reddit, the D&D Beyond forums or a site like Roll20 to find a game.
Thx did not see those xD
are there any must have cantrips or spells for a warlock?
Eldritch blast Lol. But except that for cantrips, eh, do what you want. For spells, maybe hex ? Someone correct me if im wrong.
ty
Prestidigitation, eldritch blast. After that look primarily for spells that scale with level of casting.

D&d isn’t a moble game or a board game it’s a table top rpg the only requirements is dice and a sheet
Please don’t use chat got as a baseline, generative ai does a crap job at understanding the rules and how d&d works and its soulless. As you mentioned #find-a-game is the place to go, or roll20 or the lfg reddit.
I WANT PLAN DND BUT I NEW, MY YOUNG BROTHER PLAY DND AND I SEE IN YOUTUBE LOT PEOPLE TELL THEIR STORY DND AND I WANT SEE WHO WANT PLAY?
I do actually teach brand new players to DnD how to play and learn the basics of the game
If you can learn how to do that you should not have any problems with it
could you help teach me?
OH! THAT BE GREAT
If you don’t mind and have the time I’d love to get in a call with you and discuss everything and learn. I’m more of a verbal learner than reading so it would help a lot
If your not able to I understand
CJ I’m the same way as you are
Yeah I really want to learn but everything is articles and it just gets confusing for me

People will be more inclined to talk with you if you turn off caps lock
Your milage will depend some people can help but sadly we recomend reading the Freebasic rules or for you to toss it into a tts progam. D&D can take a hour to learn the basics and Months if no years to get into the swing of it.
I have mostly new players in my game and to provide an example the paladin forgot about he turn undead Channel Divinity spell

Can somebody help me? I just stared and dont really know much.
Wanna start together?
sure im down, but im not a dungeon master so not sure where we'd go from there-
?online
Use #find-a-game #looking-for-players is where dms advertise, and #looking-for-dm is for you. Youll have better luck with LFP then LFDM
Before you go through that effort I myself am looking for a couple players to fill out my current campaign, we play on sundays in a discord
Please keep all game ads to #looking-for-players this isnt t e place to advertise games. the mods say this over and over
could i DM you?
Go for it my friend
can i join too?
But i'll keep that in mind
Go for it
I was wondering if anyone had tips on what to spend my gold on, I’m a barbarian just turned lvl 2 and I currently have 735 GP and don’t really know what I can do with my gold
medium armor?
@jaunty hound you can buy some healing potions
Barbs can’t have armour right? Bc of unnarmoured defense
Basic healing potions are worth 50g each
barbs can wear armor instead of using unarmored defense, its usually better AC too
That’s the 2d4+4 ones
Yeah I probably should, but I was thinking of something besides potion like a weapon or maybe an acessery to get better stats if that’s possible?
I would recommend speaking to your DM about the process to purchase magical items
so for example, if you have 16 CON and 14 DEX, your unarmored AC is 15, but with scale mail, it would be 16, and with half plate it would be 17
As it differs DM to DM
Ah okay so armour is often better anyways thanks
yeah, unless you have really high CON and DEX
Yeah that’s true
Yeah I feel like my AC is kinda low now , I only have 14
That’s right for a level 2 barbarian without armor
and you can easily improve it with medium armor
I haven’t checked my new ac lvl 2 that was my lvl 1 ac sorry
it probably hasnt changed
Oh okay
It won’t change till level 5
it wont change at all unless they boost DEX/CON
It changes every 5 levels
AC doesnt change every 5 levels, what?
That usually changes as well
My dm spoke something about like a ring that gives +1 con do u know what the name is/ what it costs?
Ring of protection
magic items usually dont have a fixed cost set by the game
not really? barbarians tend to invest into feats or STR in my experience
I already have 19 strength lvl 1 so I might not need to spec a lot more in to it
Barbarians don’t have stat increases every 4 levels
I think that a 30 is max for stats
you are confusing the newcomers. everyone gets ASI every 4 levels
and also, while 30 is the theoretical max, 20 is the limit for most of the game
Shield has nothing to do with ability scores, which we were talking about.
but also, there is no hard limit for AC
Know little about DND, just joined and I've realised im in over my head lol

You got this!! Have so much fun!
Yeah seems like a lot of fun but also seems very hard to remember everything
You dont need to remember everything
You really need to know the following: How to make a character, How moement works, How attack rolls worl and How spellcasting works
What should i use to build my warlock
What do you mean? Are you looking for a character sheet tool?
Here's a fillable pdf, if you don't want to do it through DDB directly:

Human warlock with the acolyte background, wasn't it?
Yup
Thx
Why in roll20.net I have 9 skills, but for wikis I can pick 5 (2 from background and 3 from class)???
which edition are you working with?
I don't understand. I can Pick 4 like I want or is based on what/
2024
but I can't see wikis with that edition
Ah, I'm not super familiar with 2024 rules, only 2014 sorry.
Usually you can pick a few to be proficient in amongst all of them. Sometimes you are limited further to which you may pick from
I fill out the character sheet in the pdf but I choose stats and known things that I know I don't know how to fill them in. The automatic stuff from roll20 I just dropped but I don't know if I would use it for something like 9 skills when the wiki says I have to choose 5
Would Spare the Dying and Guidance be good for my magic Initiate (cleric)
And healing word
Spare the dying isnt as good as it seems in my personal opinion.
Usually you simply need a DC 10 medicine check as an action to do the same thing
(At least in 2014 rules, sorry...shoulda specified)
I guess I have done, but I think its writed bad https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/594463133851058183/1360781086719869040/image.png?ex=67fc5da5&is=67fb0c25&hm=16d240f542708cc3627cc8ce700a04f2a6125608e9eafd3174209c628518c5d0&
Then what would you recommend
lemme peak at your options
Its cleric cantrips for my warlock
gotcha, lemme see
You dont really need any combat cantrips since youre a warlock, youll have Eldritch blast.
Light is always a decent option. But 100% guidance
Can someone check? ( I know about low quality)
so guidance and light?
Should be fine
would healing word be good
Looks fine minus the WOnt work with dwarfs that would be a redflag
in my story the dwarves enslaved my character to work in the blacksmith's smelter, so I guess I can put that as a flaw?
You compleatly discarded any dm's setting Unless you have a table already
Dm would comment this for me, if its lore accurate, and flexible for use in history then why it would be bad?
If you have a table I STRONGLY urge to communicate with the dm and make sure thats ok If this was presented at my table (and this is me). Ill telll you to choose from the pre written traits table.
You can distrust some races but you have to understand your playing a socal game not everyone goin to like a character who hates one race because of a few bad apples. Not only that but youll lock yourself into a Arc of learning to tolerate/trust that race. Let go of Bias
You can make a practice sheet but a good chunk of tables will say Hey: Sheets are done during session zero I will lay down what the world is about, ANd some general thigns. Then Go around the table basic storys and yays or Nays. Or Ok but...
I mean it’d be fair to claim that an evil faction of dwarves forced others to work for them. It can still lead to that innate flaw without invalidating an entire setting.
Themes may need to be discussed depending on what topics the players want to engage with at the table, but that’s a discussion that needs to happen regardless.
Calling it a red flag seems a touch extreme.
Ohh, u mean that I would broke someones character relationship with mine, so sm would use another race and I locked him for another when he wants to be a dwarf?
-I Guess in my 4 group table no one wants to be dwarf, so in the history we will not hate ourselfes. I think this flaw can be use like this when u are not locking someone or want to don't break someone things.
When we have few people group in adventure dm can use my flaw for disturbing me and spawn npc dwarfs that would to sell me something, or wants to help me with someting.
It's a flexible and facilitating for Dm who is new in the game like me. Roleplay is for everyone, and the dungeon master can changes the rules of game, and create characters that can invoke in my character feelings, and others.
It's playing a role, if its a flaw I have to follow this when dm wants to disturb me I have to be angry or react bad for dwarfs if i set that. If dm say my flaw its really locking someone and would break a history bcs idk we would live in a dwarf village, and I cant do nothing bcs when I will trade with someone I totally can't
but in situation like we have I think it's not that bad what you think
There’s kinda trick to it really. Before a session I’ll take a pictures of the character class rules. So I don’t have to worry about finding the page during fights.
About that flaw maybe you could word it differently
um something like I’ve worked as a slave for most of my life. I can’t really tell when I’ve bit off more than I can chew.
still no day for session zero 😦
Hey, I'm new to DnD (like completely new) and would like to start looking for a group to play with. Does anyone have any tips?
Sure. What sort of topics are you looking for tips on exactly?
I just can't seem to find groups that are beginner friendly.
Online or in person?
Online
If you're only looking here, you might want to expand your search!
No, I've been looking through different forums and discord groups. It's kind of a mix between not finding beginner friendly groups and the other is that they don't work well with my schedule. I'm not really picky with types (like genres) of campaigns, it's just that I was wondering if there's a place some people here might recommend for me to look.
Google dndnewbies. They have a server you might find helpful.
I'm not sure what wikis you're talking about. The Free Rules and paid content are available via D&DBeyond and a few 3rd Party sites that have a license for the content (e.g. roll20). Anything else is piracy, which I wouldn't rely on for accurate information.
As for skills, see if roll20 tells you what the source is for each proficiency. As a Wood Elf Ranger you should have 6 skill proficiencies in total as per the rules for Background (2), Class (3), and Species (1).
Other than that your sheet looks mostly fine. I'm assuming some stuff is translated to English which is why there's weird wording on some stuff (e.g. Fey Ancestry's description). Only noticed 2 things wrong:
- Your Wisdom modifier should be +3 since your Wisdom score is 16.
- Your starting gold is wrong. Assuming you chose the gold option for both class and background to get that equipment you should have 129 gp left. Also remember to cast Ranger spells you'll need a druidic spell focus, which you don't currently have.
@harsh fjord Thanks! I just got into the discord server for dndnewbies! I'll look there, I appreciate the help!
tyicly its best to use the traits listed on the rolltable instead of using your own
Please report back on the experience! I'm curious how well they hit the mark they're aiming for.
Yeah I will. Already have someone DMing me about looking for players. So I guess it's working out well already lol
Alright, 30 minute update. I've been invited to three different campaigns that match with my schedule. So thanks again for the recommendation, it seems to be working out very well!!
Hi
Oof posted same time as you. No replies #sadge
Evening
Sorry about that! I have stretched a wide net (have 4 Dnd discords rn) so it's possible they're from them
Hello!
Not your fault ❤️ I'll just keep fishing
I’m sure those willing to pay to play get buried in dm
It's nice to meet everyone
I mean it is alot of work to do well. So I understand if people ask for compensation.
I'm mostly looking for one shots for free dms which will be a little bit different of course.
What other discords have you tried, I might go fishing there as well
Dream Realm DnD, D&D Newbie, & Divinity DND (though Divinity doesn't chat much so far...idk if they just Direct Message or not).
Thanks a bunch !!!!!!!!
Hope it helps!
How much do paid dnd groups generally charge for new players?
Not sure. I've seen a variety tbh some 10$-20$ others 50$
10-25 is pretty normal
It really depends. I know if/when I start to charge for my one shots, I'll likely charge low to gain credibility and such.
As supply / demand levels out, I'll eventually settle on a price that works for me and my players.
I don’t charge for my games
People who charge have invested a lot of money into DnD and want to just make a profit off their games
They make DnD like a job
Theres mods for level20? I want some news, but i cant found some
Yes you can find some modules that will go to level 20 but the only one I know of is the Vecna module
Can you send me the channel pliz
Yeah Vecna is 10-20 not a lot of mods go to that for good reasons
I find a lot of classes spike enough at 5th level spells (lvl 9) and level 10 buffs that you don't often need to go past 10 for players to feel powerful
Hiii hi hi :D
I literally know nothing about DnD I just kinda wanted to try it out recently
How do I like find a game to join?
how does character making work cause I look online and get these huge sheets with a ton of info and I go "oooh... that's not good...."
And can I be a giant bug
Very important
Being a giant bug is important
And how many limits are there cause all these numbers on these sheets are intimidating
is everyone asleep at the monent?
hi there
Players handbook or Dnd beyond, ig.
Wait can I be a robot... that would be sick... like an ancient robot or something...
DnD beyond? Cause I do NOT feel like reading a book 😭 (sorryyy)
but whats DnD beyond?
Warforged is the place for robots ig
warforged.. noted
dunno what it means but I'm stuffing the name in the back of my brain
Dnd beyond is where you can read up on things without reading a book
ahh
How do people find games to play with eachother?
Also off topic but the server having a "No AI" rule makes me unreasonably happy
Cause god AI images have been giving me a crisis with my own art
#find-a-game for find ing a game here
Yayyy! :D
AI art in replacement of human art is unethical imo
That’s for #non-dnd-topics
but this isnt the place to discuss ai art that doesnt relate to dnd
What lv one invocation should a fiend warlock get
Depends how you want to play the warlock
So insanely based
Hi! I'm like new to dnd and I originally should have a campaign whit friends in rl but out dm (my friends father) is like very busy and he dosnt have time so ik curios does anybody have a game that I can join. Even if it's one session ??? am I in the correct channel for it apologies if I'm not 🙂
(Also sorry for the English typos english is not my fist language)
Hello chat
I understand how to play but I don't understand stats n builds n stuff
Check #looking-for-players
Aah TYSM
being a worldbox fan and also new to dnd is like a fictionalized cheat code
Heeellooo
are there any spells that you can cast on a teammate to up their AC?
I used the method for the gold ‘Random Starting Gold’ which is based on my class, and for the guard I have to use 5d4 x 10gp + 15 (with Background Acolyte) I found this information in the article ‘SkullSplitterDice’ entitled ‘5e Starting Gold Guide’.
Yes, I forgot about the modifier 😅 I added +1 wisdom from the Forest Elf bonus and forgot about the modifier.
For later, can you send me some wikis for character creation, I don't want to use pirated books from the internet so you know I don't actually know what to type everywhere in the sheet
Shield of faith
thanks
Sounds like you're using the 2014 rules. Here's the stuff for that: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014

Hi I just joined
There isn’t any such thing as every group/game is different.
But you could ask folks in #dm-discussion to see if there’s common things they limit/prohibit in their games.
anyone got a dm we cna start with
That's not how it works

i tried using the faq post its not workn for me
What do you mean you "tried using the faq post"?
clicked into /looking-for-dm and just sends me to a page where i cant post
Then you didn't read the instructions
You need to go to #find-a-game and read the instructions; it explains how to use the discord bot to make a post
/ looking for dm is a command
figured it out thanks for the help'
Hey I was wondering in the players handbook it says that each time when you level up you get an additional hit die, can someone explain what that means?:)
For one, your HP increases by a roll of that die or the average. So a level 2 fighter, for example, would gain 1d10 (plus CON modifier) to their HP total or 6 HP (plus CON modifier).
Also, you have a pool of hit dice which you can typically use during short rests to restore HP. A level 2 fighter has 2 hit dice, one for each level of fighter. So they could roll up to 2d10 (with CON modifier per die) to recover HP, and you'd restore that pool of hit dice on a long rest.
So my Barbarian that went from level 1 to 2, I should roll 2d12 and add my con modifier as my total hp?
Or just roll 1d12
+mod
Just 1d12 plus modifier.
Okay thanks
Assuming the DM allows rolling. Some insist on using the average.
Hello I am a complete noob. I've only played one DND game before
Welcome
Any advice on where I should start looking?
Welcome rabbit
Thxs for welcoming me

I'm not exactly new (I used to play some time ago irl, the 2014 version) but I kinda dropped it for some years. Just one question. Doesn't the warlock subclass start at level 1?
It does in the 2014 version of the rules.
In 2024, every class gets its subclass at level 3, including warlock.
I see
can i use multiple Bardic inspirations as bonus on same d20 check?? bard has 3 slots, so could i use them all up for a single check for party member??
They do not stack, you can give it to multiple people but you can't give more than 1 to one person at a time
Once within the next 10 minutes, the creature can roll the die and add the number rolled to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw it makes. The creature can wait until after it rolls the d20 before deciding to use the Bardic Inspiration die, but must decide before the DM says whether the roll succeeds or fails. Once the Bardic Inspiration die is rolled, it is lost. A creature can have only one Bardic Inspiration die at a time.
Hi

Evening friends!!!
Any tips on a good origin feat for my lvl 1 human ranger?
Hermit,outlander
Oh
You can’t pick a origin fest it comes from your background in 2014
Eyyyyyy fellow Bahamet lover
2024, you mean
OPPs yes
But also, humans can pick an additional feat.
Alert is a good one
To answer your question it depends a little bit on how you're building your ranger.
Tough and Savage Attacker are both good all-round feats for martial type characters. Alert is good. Especially if you plan to go Gloomstalker to really capitalize on having a sick initiative.
can i use Help action on abilities checks, like foraging for 1 hour for example.
Yes son dms may ask you to also have prof in that skill tho but that’s on a dm to dm based on unsure what the rule as written says other than help gives the tiller advantage
I'm so new but I've been reading a little about DnD. Any tips on getting started? Anything would help! :DD
Scroll up a little for a bunch of useful links.
Thank u mr smith!
Hello! I'm curious - as someone completely new, never played before - what's the best way/place to get started?
There’s so many ways to do so. I’d check out #find-a-game
Hey im new here too iv always been interested in dnd, im trying to find a game idk if i should be doing this or something else
same. Always been interested and found this discord. I want to join a community but don't want to be the only one learning as I go
Check out the looking for games instructions in #find-a-game and it’s super easy to fill out
Yea it seems pretty straightforward but im noticing that almost every session is planned in advance. I thought i could just hop in and start immediately is this not the case?
There’s both available, just need to keep looking. Can say if u willing to pay you have more choices
How much would a ticket cost so to say and would they tolerate a new comer not so informed?
@reef siren @stark fable @spiral hare I can help you with your questions
How detailed does my character's backstory have to be?
That depends on the DM
That depends on the DM and party you are playing with and how much you want your story to influence the over all story or if you just want to hang out with friends
Hey everyone, new here as well. Trying to figure out best way to start with best results. I started making a character on roll20, but then i got lost

When making a detailed backstory, try not to make it excessively long unless requested specifically by the DM. Remember the focus of the game should be the adventure you and your party are currently on, not the adventures your character has been on before the start of the game. Ideally 3 things should be clear when making a backstory (which conveniently allows it to be made in as little as 3 sentences):
- Who your character is
- How they got their powers
- Why they’re adventuring
Have you taken a look at the Free Rules yet?
They’re linked in this channels pins as well as #learn-to-play
Of course, if you’re stuck with the sheet and are having trouble with the rules, we can answer any specific questions you may have
got it. that's helpful. thanks
Honestly, trying to sort through all the rules and all the different platforms to play seem a bit intimidating. I was hoping to find somewhere that does maybe some group orientation for newbies or something. I'll continue my quest, thank you. Maybe it's not for me 😦
Unless there is a new player friendly game. Roll-20 is the more popular option but generally most DMs prefer you know chapters 1/2
Sadly too it off most people find out after a while d&d isn’t for them which happened to a player in my current game
how do i learn chapters 1/2?
It’s as simple as going through the Free Rules and reading the first 2 chapters. I wouldn’t worry about memorizing everything, but do familiarize yourself with the rules around character creation, combat, and d20 tests
Feel free to skip some parts too. No reason to look at the Wizard page if you don’t plan/want to play a Wizard, for example
Yeah that's how I roll when I DM. You don't really need to know every rule, what's important is you know how your character functions.
ok thank you, i'll check that out. I haven't played in a very long time and when i did it was just a few friends messing around when we were younger. Thanks for the help. I shall return when I'm ready for the next step 🙂
Hi! I'd like to know what I should do for starters
I'm really new and I didn't know terms like roll10 roll20 or any of that, maybe help me explain what those slangs or terms mean
Roll20 is a website that is where a group can play d&d in. You can create your characters there and maps there and roll dice there., D&D beyond is another place to do exactly that and is the official place for it
Roll-20 is a web baised vtt. It’s how you can play d&d online it’s one of the more popular platforms out there next to owlbear or foundry.
Ah I see, thank u sm for da information!!!
That explains alot
Still very new to DND so can’t say much

Mostly trying to look for a dungeon master who was willing to look through this dinosaur theme D&D book I got
If you’re looking to find a group/DM using this server read the instructions in #find-a-game
Ty
Tabletopbuilds or Rpgbot
trying to find a cme build specifically do you know where i could look?
conjure minor elementals?
you want to play a circle of the shephard druid, not a wizard if you want to be optimal
Tabletop RPG has a guide on optimizing CME specifically. If you wanted a full Wizard build to compliment that spell specifically you’d want to ask around in #optimization since typically character optimization doesn’t revolve around a single spell
Hello
I would ask in #optimization for help with a build then. This channel is more for helping newbies learn the rules over building a character for them.
Welcome!
YALLLL I LIVED MY FIRST HIGH LEVEL SESSION
It was a trial run for me just to see if the group wants to incorporate me into their group. And I'm so glad they said yes!!
Which means I didn't do too badly haha
hi guys im fairly new to the whole DnD game if someone where to help me out i would really appreciate it!
Welcome to DnD. Anything you need help with in specific?
uh i dont really know where to start at all and how to start playing
Have you looked at #learn-to-play got links to free basic rules and guides
#find-a-game is a good place to look for games
tysmm!
(Games over discord specifically)
Game stores sometimes have a place for finding irl DnD games
i dont really have a lot of game stores in my local area so i was searching for online alternatives
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started. But try having a look at the Free Rules and see about putting together a level one character. That's a way to figure out the kind of things you need to know for play.
would you recommend any specific beginner friendly servers ?
Had to say there is a lot of DnD out there, most tables should be welcoming to new players, we were all new at some point
The game finder on Roll20 has a specific button for games that welcome new players.
Have a look at #learn-to-play and welcome
Hi
Morning
Hello, me and my friend joined this server cause we like DnD and need more people who also like it
welcome
hello! what channel do i ask about campaigns in?
if you are looking for campaigns find the instructions are in #find-a-game
thank you, what channel do i send the cmd in?
i think i found it
Which command do i use if i'm interested in being a player in a new campaign but can't find a DM or players?
Hello everyone . I'm completely new to dnd but wanna play. I don't have the players handbook, dice etc.... as my parents are not willing to buy. I'm trying to find a group to Learn and play with.

Welcome! The best place to start is with the Free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat. As for looking for a group, check out #find-a-game to get started on this server!
I’ve never dm a game before but I’m gonna do dragons of stormwreck isle soon I’ve played one session zero played not dm if anyone is interested in playing with me but I might be a bit slow and bad
If you’re looking for players try #find-a-game , you should be able to find players that are excited about playing with a new dm!
Hi me and a group of friends are all fully new to dnd aside from me who has just the bare minimum knowledge about it, i was wondering if this is the place to ask like questions? cause I didnt realize how confusing it would be to figure out the stats and stuff
Yes this is the place, do y'all need a mentor?
YES we do, we are legit so confused about how to go about any of this stuff, we're currently just trying to do our sheets
Alright are y'all in a voice call or a server RN that I could join and help?
the other ppl in the group arent here rn (one is in poland rn) so it'll just be me and another guy if that's alr?
Yeah that's fine
Hi! I’m really new to dnd and was hoping to get some advice or insight on a character idea I had, would this be the right server to discuss this or should I move to dnd-discussions?
Can anyone recommend any 5e books that give some alternative rules for wilderness survival, journeys, fatigue, realism, wounds, encumbrance etc. I found some alternative rules like 'gritty realism' in the 2014 DMG, but have heard there are some third party 5e stuff that take some alternative approaches.
If your questions are about the basic core ideas surrounding characters or rules, then this is the channel for you.
If your questions are in depth about backstory, builds, or more intricate mechanics, then try asking in #character-discussion .
Alright ty sm!!
You are correct that the 2014 DMG is the only official book with direct optional rules like that. For third party recommendations, I'd check in #third-party .
I need help with my character
#character-discussion might be for you. What help do you need?
Oh so you like sonic per say?
Ok so this goes out to the staff of wotc how do I run the rules in videogame aspect
Yes
There are no staff here, and your question doesn't make sense. D&D is not a video game, it's a tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG)
Get yourself a lawyer and apply for licensing, this is not the place to progress with this here
Davy’s what they are saying is that they want to convert the rules to videogame rules
Fdm yes ty
It's still not the place for that. This is the channel for explaining the basics of the actual game to newcomers
Your previous question seemed like you were asking about how to understand/play the game
Hence being directed here
I don't think there's anywhere on this server that can really help with converting d&d to a video game
It's Davyd, not Davy
(even without going into all the potential licensing issues)
I'll throw my hat into the interpretation here. I believe Jasonith is requesting DnD to be explained to them using video game terms, something that it seems they're more familiar with.
Yes dosh
I knew I took that Linguist feat for a reason
I thought a DM can take the rules and change them to suit their needs
Yes, they can, but what does that have to do with anything being asked right now?
That’s what they want to do but in videogame terms
No?
Without breaking the game
To answer your original question, then, I think you're going to have a hard time finding anyone here who is willing to walk you through all the rules 1 on 1. Our usual recommendation is that you should read the free rules yourself, and come back to us if you have any specific questions.

yes what?
What you're saying FDM doesn't seem to follow what's actually being said
Trying to find the bg3 tag
I don't know if that's necessarily pertinent either, to be honest
BG3 would be as close as possible for conversion
The person in question was not asking for any conversion whatsoever. They were asking for explanation using more familiar terminology.
But some of the game is OP
I gave them something to compare with what they wanted
BG3 a video game and DnD
Common sense here
Agreed
Agreed
Yes n thts how I'm trying to do my campaign
D&D already uses game like mechanics. Quests character creation and turn baised combat. Heck there is xp leveling
The dice is there to see who hits or misses
Is the wild shape druid list mostly the same between 2014 and 2024 versions?
Let me Word it this way how to I add conditions like vex into aspect how do I play them mechanically
@wary moat do you have BG3
Yes I do
Condition’s are already in the rules
They're similar by name, but many of the individual beasts have gotten their stat blocks changed in the latest Monster Manual.
Well I suggest that you really study BG3 and compare the rules with DnD and see what you can come up with
And uh, you see my pfp yes?
I don't know what you mean by "aspect" here.
Also, Vex isn't a condition.
He means Dex
Dex isn't a condition either...
"Conditions like Dex" doesn't make sense either
And arguably makes less sense in this context
He probably can’t word what he wants to say
I can see how someone might mistake the Vex effect as a condition
Well, let's let Jasonith clarify, rather than making things more complicated by guessing
@wary moat you should start by giving the free rules a read rather than using video games as a crutch in this situation
