Sorry, I was referencing your profile picture, with dialouge the character said. It's a little cringe I admit, I just wanted to see your reaction. Specifically referring to your pfp being the G-Man.
I know this is the DnD server but I was just a little excited on the prospect someone liked Half-Life at a similar degree to myself. Sorry
Hey guys one question, recently I started playing campaign with few friends and I'm pretty much only dedicated caster in group playing Sorcerer and soon we will hit lvl 4 and take first feat. Im seriously considering ritual master since sorc feels like he has really good lvl 1 spells and party could use some rituals. Question being, does this make sense? If so what rituals are really good to pick?
Ah, I see! Forgive me for not catching on. You're right, I am a fan of the franchise.
Speak with animals, detect magic, find familiar and comprehend languages are all solid picks, I feel. Floating disk and unseen servant can have utility and maybe you get to be a little clever with them, but read them carefully.
haii im new to this server
i wanna know how i can get into D&D im new to dnd never played and i wanna know how i can get started and if there is any1 who would be willing to help me learn the basics (sry if it sounds beggy just dont know where to start 😅)

Hi i new
hey, take a look at those links
^the bot has links and resources we can’t tutor or teach one on one
Anyone got any idea how much it costs to get into dnd? Not sure what exactly is needed to get into it
0 dollars. You can start playing with the free rules. Yes it's limited but it's everything you need to start playing.
Free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
The books just add additional character options, monsters, magical items, and pre-built adventures.
Oh ok, thanks, wasn’t too sure since I thought I’d saw people saying some stuff are NEEDED or smth, like the players handbook or whatever it’s called, forgot
The players handbook is considered a core D&D book and it provides a lot of player character features like subclasses, species, feats, and backgrounds.
But again, all you need to start playing is the free rules, character sheets, dice, friends, and a way to play together.
Would Roll20 work for a group of newbies (including the DM?)
Yes - Roll20 is a popular Virtual Tabletop (VTT) used to play D&D games online.
Yes it’s very easy but can be a pain, free rules and standard resource documents are included including monsters
Pros:
*character mancer is a breeze to use
*the compendium
*free basic rules included as well as resources
*tokens can be connected to a characters hp,ac ext
*buying adventures and books provides you with everything you need to run the game
Cons; prone to bugging out badly
Sometimes sheets won’t level up for some reason or another
Dynamic lighting requires a sub
Free users can host games but are limited to how many games they can run, and how many people they can share thier books with.
Hello everyone I’m new to D&D
Anyone willing to take on a newbie? I have my character made, with the help of a friend who already plays D&D and is very familiar with it but unfortunately can’t squeeze me into his games
Hello am new to dnd I have done one or two campaigns but not long term I don’t have dice but I do have a character
Hi all! Currently in the process of building a new character to play my first ever campaign! Hopefully some DMs out there would be looking for new characters!
Help with a Disney world. Im Merida.
What do you need help with? Building the character sheet?
I don't know how to be a DM really.
Do you just need advice?
More like help
Just a sec, let me find something
I forgot what the bot command to help new DMs is
Ok.
hello im a new d&d player currently in my first campaign, would anyone be kind enough to help me understand how thief and sneak attack works? (i know about advantages and everything alrdy)
Hey yall i was wondering how i can run a one on one campaign with my player but still give them opportunities to roleplay despite not having a party
@lucid leaf did u remember?
This?
Found it! Basics for new DMs
Ok.
Check it out, could be helpful
Can you tell a story?
Then if you are not cut out to be a DM then focus on learning the rules and finding a game as a player
@limber pecan if you want to be a DM the best thing to do is to watch other DMs and listen and learn from them
Ik.
I would be happy to work with you on it
The best way to actually start DMing is to DM a module and the one you should start with is Lost Mines of Phandelver
I am DMing Lost Mines on Thursday nights in my server and you are welcome to join us and you can listen and learn
I’m looking for another player to replace another player who has to leave because of a new job
Sure.
How much more convenient is DND Beyond’s online character sheet compared to a physical paper copy for someone who’s just starting out?
kinda depends? the DDB sheet does a lot for you that you otherwise would have to do yourself but with the current state DDB is in (2024 rules and 2014 rules dont mix well on the sheet, some bugs and missing features etc.) it also can be less convenient than it used to be
the advantage of making a paper sheet is that creating one means you actually learn a lot of the rules by doing so
with DDB, you might not learn much and still end up with a functional sheet
Does a Monk count as a spellcaster for the character sheet? It does say Monks ‘cast’ using Ki points. I’m afraid I won’t be able to remember everything if I don’t have it written down.
No. Monks are martials
Spellcasters are (sub)classes with the Spellcasting (or Pact Magic, for Warlock) feature
Where would I be writing down things Monks can cast, like Darkness/Darkvision
Do I just make a separate document for that?
Monks casting a spell using Ki Points will count for the purposes of effects that care about someone casting a spell (I.e. Counterspell), but they aren’t counted as a “spellcaster” per se
And you would write down your spells in the spells section of the character sheet
There's a section for features on that sheet, I thought?
It’s more the spells I get from subclasses
If you've got actual spells, put them in the spells box.
I assume anything I cast using Ki points count as a spell?
Buddy, it's your sheet. Fill it how you like, ideally in a manner that is readable and simple for your reference.
Any spells you cast count as a spell, but not every thing you can expend Ki points on is a spell
Got it, thanks!
Is there someone here that could help me and my friends build character sheets 😔 ( also dm us for a one shot campaign to get the feel of things 🙏 ) Thanks!
Try the Free Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Pick a class, a species and a background.
Use the standard array method for your ability scores (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8). Look at the ability scores mentioned in your class description to know where to put your high numbers.
Pick your skill proficiencies and feats from the choices you've made.
Choose your starting equipment from the options for your class.
Now you just need a name and a little about your appearance and you're ready for adventure!
Thank yous!!
I'm a complete stranger to D&D but when people have described it to me in the past and told me about their campaigns it sounds like so much fun.
It seems like such a massive thing, and I have no idea where to start with anything. Please help😅

hi I'm relatively new to DND, and new to GM'ing. I'm trying to create my first homebrew monster, where is the best place to find someone who can have a quick look and tell me if I'm doing it right? Thanks!
thanks
hi are there videos or website to explain all the dices and what they are used for
That's detailed in the Free Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
It's free!
thank you
Hello, just thought id ask in here as im compeltely new to DND but really wanted to get into it for awhile, could someone give my high orc (Orc race thats colored red and is a rage filled brute) A good backstory as I cant decide on hired muscle and a wanted rogue
Your backstory is highly personal and something you should make with your fellow players and especially your DM. #character-discussion is a good place for help with making a character
What you've got sounds good. They fell in with a bad crowd, worked as hired muscle, when a job went sour they got the blame. They've since had to go on the run from the authorities and figured taking on the role of an honest adventurer would be a good cover.
I sadly cant make it with my fellow players this is why I thought id just ask in this area
The details you can work out with a DM when you get a game going.
Why can't you? Are you not doing a session 0 with your group?
Unfortunately not until we have the correct player count
I have asked the DM afew questions but thought id find good ideas here
Hi, I'm someone who's always wanted to get into DnD but doesn't really know much beyond super surface level stuff and is pretty shy when it comes to looking for groups. Is there a detailed guide for stuff beginners should know or anything? Thanks
I suggest going through the free rules and focus on the Playing the Game and Creating a Character sections. You want to generally know how a character sheet works and dice rolls.

Do wizard subclasses learn specific subclass-flavored spells as they level, like the cleric, or do they have to find those spells and write them in their wizard book?
hi im new to dnd and im getting started creating a guild that got destroyed, where do i post my guild, the guild is just for lore purposes for my character it wont function since it technically doesnt exist anymore.
Are you wanting input on like a backstory for your character? I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say a guild.
a backstory
Could i use true True, resurrection on a fragment of a ancient dragon as long as its died in the last 200 years or does its have to be the whole?
Hello
True resurrection restores any missing body parts and can provide a new body entirely if the name of the creature is known.
If you want feedback or help with it and it a: isnt a huge wall of text and b: contains server appropriate language and topics you could post in #character-discussion

Hey welcome! Check out the pinned posts in this channel. There are a lot of good resources to get you started and feel free to ask questions here.
Are there any good worlds that I could use for my first ever D&D campaign? I'm DMing.
you could just run a pre written advenutre
good is subjective, but you will find a lot of published material on worlds like forgotten realms, eberron, greyhawk or exandria

How long have you all been playing for?
hello
can anyone please help me learn this game
im v new to this, just made account few mins ago
what do you need help with?
#learn-to-play has resourses start with the free basic rules
in general guide, i watched videos but to no avail
how I started is my DM gave me homework, like read the basic rules first and such, then we got together and he explained checks to me and made a mock combat
i have created my character btw
thank you, desperately needed
could always try to find a beginner friendly game at #looking-for-players
your dm sounds supportive
thanks
yeah he was, we were also in prison so had a lot of free time lol
but yeah, most DM's won't mind helping new folks
i dmed one person and they said im too old to join, are there any age restrictions?
the best place to hangout
that all depends on the group and DM really
i play with two groups... pretty much only requirement is being over 18
okay, but i can play this right? i mean, i have to play this tomorrow with my best friend and im kinda nervous and trying to understand what this whole thing is
People in their 80s play D&D, you're definitely not too old 🙂
okay, wonderful then thank you
okay amazing, i thought i was done for
Some groups may just have an age preference which works for them. Not all games will have restrictions like that.
this is great
so you are playing with your friends group tomorrow?
yesss
awesome
my best friend has been playing for a while so she has decided to be the DM and the rest of us will play w her
if your friend knows you are a newcomer i'm sure they will help you learn
or for her
oh yes, she will explain everything im just kinda nervous cause im kinda slow
most likely will do a "session 0" which will go over rules of the group and gameplay
side note: i have never played a video game before, this will be my first ever experience
right on
will it be boring? are the rules hard?
Depends
on?
if you did play video games... BG3 and Solasta are good games to learn DnD 5E rules
granted 2014 ruleset
it's only as boring as you make it really.... all depends on the group
i feel v alienated rn lol, have no idea what these are but im sure they must be fire
right
if you go in with an open mind and good attitude it usually works out for me
easy then, i can pull if off w no sweat hahha
im glad to hear it :)))
get snacks, dinner, laughs and kill some stuff
looking forward to have the same experience, i appreciate your guidance
oh they're planning booze and stuff, sure it will be good ig
lol
i dont drink so i'll be focusing on how to play lol
yeah i'm in recovery personally but a few people I play with smoke 420 or drink when we play. lol
any tips for the first timer? during character building i saw many new terms, i just chose randomly
will find out what those are tomorrow
aww man, that sounds terrible and fun at the same time hhaaha
i'd suggest asking your DM to help build your character with you so they could explain it
okay, i'll ask tomorrow then
we are planning to play tomorrow so i was asked to build my character
#character-discussion also is a good place to discuss character builds
it says
FemaleElfSorcerer 1 / Bard 1
i'll check it out thanks :)))
cool bards my favorite class
From here it seems you have made a level 2 multi classed character. Just joining the convo but did your DM approve starting at level 2?
needs approval? im damned then
i guess we dont have that
Your starting level is dependent on DM, which is usually level 1
it does says level 2 tho🥹
oh i messed up
It’s level 2 because you’ve taken 1 level in 2 classes
how do i level down
Remove one of the classes
okay greatt
Baulders gate 3 is a newer game made by Larian Studios, its semi turnbaised and uses most of the rules form the 2014 game. (has dice mechanics as well) Very good game if not hard at times.
Solastas and soon Solastas 2 is simular but more of a aa game, uses grid baised combat and you make your own party as well. Bolth games are worth picking up on steam.
I said what I said because not to put you down but Table Top rpgs arnt for everyone. This is why its such a nich hobby, some people can find x,y or z Boring, while other enjoy it.
D&D is fin if you go in with a open mind and try to have fun with in reason.
Understood, i guess i just gotta go w the flow in this case
thank you for the explanation :)))
Im enjoying my self despite being a newer player as well (and gm), Just remember at the end of the day its a game about rolling dice. Youll make mistakes and get things wrong or make horrible decisions thatll get your party killed. (like i did)
i can use the good heads up hahhaa thanks
since all of us are new to this game except the DM, guess no one will yell at each other for the kill
*raised a brow
Xp is shared if your using that, otherwise dms use milestones everyone is on a Even playing field unless the dm is a - and plays it like a competion an dnot a Collab
we're 5 people, 1 experienced dm rest newbies
she said she'll just be dm cause then it'll be a lot to handle
we're doing this for her bday and im really excited :)))
enjoy

Being a minor does make it more of a challenge to find/join random online D&D games due to the social/legal issues surrounding minors.
You may be best off seeing if your school has a D&D club,or a local game store, or even your local library.
Also nothing wrong with grabbing some friends and seeing if they want to play a one-shot D&D game where one of you plays the DM and run them through a quick one-session adventure.
I dont live in america, where i live my schools dont have clubs or anything like that
And my friends dont realy consider playing dnd
Maybe watch a D&D liveplay stream/show on YouTube with them - you might change their minds.
They already did, tho for most of them its not theyr playstyle and the few ones who might want......just want to do troll Characters or just play as the villain....
Can anyone help me build a level 3 beastmaster human ranger
Folks in #character-discussion can help.
You might try looking for games posted in #looking-for-community - these are D&D community games and may have more options that might work for your age bracket and schedule.
how much planning should i do before my campaigns first session (i’m dm)
Varies by DM and group - If using a prewritten adventure, spend the time to read through the materials you'll likely encounter for the upcoming session, take whatever notes you need, plan any major encounters or challenges, but also keep things somewhat flexible and be prepared to adjust things based on what your group does. For more help, check with the folks in #dm-discussion.
Hey, y'all! I'm a complete newbie to D&D and would like to learn all I can about the game before attempting to join a campaign. Do you have any good resources that will help me understand the different classes?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes This section on DND beyond has an overview of the classes
Thanks!
Sadly allot of people prefer 18+ there are groups that will allow younger players, but mostly is a quideline and law issues. Sadly there are a tun of bad people out there
I am aware of that, tho i now have searched for about 1 1/2 year and wasnt able to find any group that does so.
it’s not a bad idea to look into a streamed campaign. I find that the best way to learn is to watch
Hey I am also around that age and have the same amount of experience could you let me know if you find any groups btw I can only play online so if you find someone to dm and to play with online can you give me an invite
What are some starting tips on being a dm?
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

Noice
Need help making a bard character sheet, if anyone wants to help
Is it possible to be a goblin?
There is a goblin player character species, yup. Monsters of the Multiverse is the (most recent) book that contains it.
Awesome, how bout an orc
Orc most recently in the current Player's Handbook.
Is there a difference?
Really a different race, half orc and half human
I cant build a Beast Master ranger without it I believe
i probably should have asked this before, but where do i put creatures i would like to present?
i already put it in arts and crafts thinking that was the best place but i’m still not sure
Are you looking for feedback on the stats or are you just sharing the design?
feedback on stats
like i don’t know how i would put stats on it

do i have to buy the entire book on dnd beyond to get access to 1 subclass?
From what I understand, yes. They got rid of the ability to buy individual parts.
hello
Are you using the Beyond20 extension, by any chance?
If so, you may just need to go to the Features & Traits page to make it update.
How do you make a request for a DM or to join a table? I can only do online play RN and I live in NZ
#find-a-game can help. Also try Roll20, LFG on Reddit or the D&D Beyond forums for starters.

ohhh, okay
Hey! I'm prepping for my first time playing D&D. I got voted to be the DM, I was wondering at what point do I let my players level up?
Are you using xp or story based leveling? Are you running a pre written campaign?
I'm using the Dragona of Stormwreck Isle campaign. I'm not sure if it's xp or story based.
Have a read it will prob tell you when to lvl up the party
👍👍 I'm about halfway through the book, and it's talking about different quests and what level my party should be, but I haven't seen anything about when to level them up yet. I'll keep going, thanks!
it tells you to level up after each dungeon chapter basically, you level up when you finish the wreck, when you finish the caves, and when you finish the observatory
Ooohh I see that now, cool cool. After this campaign is done, should I encourage my players to create new characters or just keep with what they have? Also any suggestions for the next campaign? Should I get another official one or make my own?
You can go either way for players making new characters or using their old characters aslong as the adventure you're running starts at the level they already are, and I'd probably recommend getting an official book as homebrewing an adventure is pretty difficult

hello
can i somehow increase my weapon(short sword) proficiency. I have base +2. can I make it bigger and what are the methods. Specifically increase, NOT gain new proficiencies.
are you talking about wepon damage?
yes
wait no, it only apply to attack roll, so im talking about attack roll then
but would be intrested in ways to increase dmg to 😄
keep in mind our campaign goes only up to lvl7
increasing the chance to hit? you can improve your proficiency bonus, ability scores, and utilize class features, spells, feats, or magical items that provide bonuses to attack rolls. it just depends how you want to go about it. same thing applies to damage
so level 4 you can add skill points or take feats these can be used to increase the stat block
and if i remember my general proficiency bonus increase with lvl ups?
yeah but i decided to go all in to dex because im rogue and dex just makes everything better 😄
so whats your dex at?
im lvl 3now my dex is 16(+3)
ok so you should be adding +3 to all attack rolls with ranged weopons you are proficient in and any finesse based weopons
adding damage will be more based on skills used or magical enhancements.
yes we figuered out this today :] my dmg calculations are solid now, im just interested in what other ways i could increase my atk or dmg in next 1-2lvl ups
like optional ways without losind dex upgrade
i dont see a feat taht would be better than +2 in dex
magical enchantments? like magic items-weapons?
yeah
even some spells
like a rangers, hunters mark spell, this adds damage to thier hits. some like giant strength can add to str based damage rolls. rougues tend to use sneak attacks as a way to gain extra damage to thier hits
thank you :]
your welcome
dnd seems like a lotta work 🥀 tryna get into it but seems like a lotta work
guys I’m completely new to dnd and I haven’t really started it because I can’t find friends/people for it in my country

wait but if you‘re going to search for new players soon, can I remind me so I could maybe join?😥
yeah let me flick you a DM real quick
How does one find out the basics, I’ve just been watching YouTube videos on it, and 80% of them say “get the rule book” 🥀
simple skill rolls and attacks are done on a D20 damage is done on the indicated dice. role play is encouraged and getting into a new player friendly game is the quickest way as the DM will walk you through all the minor intricaies
Best way I have seen is to watch D&D games on yotube or anything and pick up on the rules through osmosis. Or simply play with friends.
Its ok if you don't fully understand everything. If you have questions, ask, and you will have the context to understand the answer. Rather reading the rule book.
Also welcome welcome!!
The basics are:
The DM describes a situation, you can role play the scene and if you want to do something, tell the DM what you would like to do. They will then ask for a check, and you make the associated check with a d20, adding the number next to that check listed on your character sheet. They then describe what happens, and repeat.
In combat:
Every creature rolls an intiativve check at the start of combat. One full circulation of all creatures currently involved is one "round"
In each round, each creature gets one action, one bonus action, one reaction, and their movement. You can use your action, bonus action, and movement when your turn in the initiative order comes up, taking any action described on your character sheet
you can use any "reactions" you have any time during that round, provided something meets the description of what triggers the reaction.
Other:
Your character will likely have additional features and traits they can use both in and out of combat. They should be worded pretty clearly, but if theres any confusion just ask your DM if that feature is appropriate for the situation you want to use it in.
all the spells, attacks, and other features will likely have the resource they use listed next to them, to help you keep track of what you can do at any given time eg (spell takes 1 action, and 1 first level spell slot)
Cheers for the help
np hope you have fun 👍
Hey, I'm kinda new around here. Where can I find a group that likes to play DnD?
#find-a-game has the stuff and commands to use to make posts
Ok, thank you sm
Roll20,Reddit lfg ext
Warning beware and make sure it’s not paid if you don’t wish to pay for games.(never understood why sunk costs had to be put into d&d
Oh, I'm kinda broke rn so.. probably gonna have to avoid that like it's covid
not all games there are paid play
How should one go about picking a race? Not sure since I’ve heard that different books have different races
If you don't have a DM, you're making a character for practice, essentially, so pick what's available to you or what sounds cool!
And yes, different books have different options, and the DM decides which ones are usable in a given campaign.
There are really two schools of thought here:
Character based race selection - selecting what makes sense to you on a flavor level, this is not always a suboptimal pick, just one that prioritizes narrative fulfillment
Class based race selection - Selecting a race for maximum relevant bonuses, the default, If you're going barbarian, play a half-orc, plain and simple. Prioritizes gameplay fulfillment
Apologies, I should’ve specified, I meant it as in to be suited for play, like if the dm would / wouldn’t want something, so I’m not sure if I should focus on one specific book or check out some that are commonly used and such.
Never played a game but want to try do any form of prep so I’m not sure
ask them about the setting, and pick something that would fit there
Stick with the players hand book mainly
Guys what do I do if I don't have the players handbook or the dm's manual
I'm the DM and it's my first time just started making the map and the intro story for the campaign

are the free rules available in other formats?
Not legally. There's no pdf or anything. Its just on there.
then are the paid books available in other formats?
like what?
anything I guess
Paid books are generally only available (legally) in printed or digital form. Printed is exclusively an official book released by WotC. Digital form can be D&D Beyond or any VTT licensed module available for use specifically in that VTT.
so is the dnd beyond version in the same web style as the free rules? also are the vtt modules all paid for separately?
Yes and Yes
Just as I have paid for the 2024 Core Books (digitally) for use in D&D Beyond AND Roll20
that's... limiting I think
welcome to WotC Copyright issues
if they don't provide it, we can't legally have it...
do the digital versions have any art?
that's nice. how are they compared to the physical? no page texture / background I'm assuming?
As a newborn baby in the field of DnD, is there a way to play the game somewhere to see if I'm into it? Since I made multiple characters on multiple different sites but didn't allow any actual gameplay...
I think you need to find a group to play. I'm just as new though
go to your local comic book store or go on insta and search up dnd in your city
its an easy(er) way to find games
easier than using the discord or something?
Games fill out fast on discord, Though we dms have a time screening bad actors out
Plus if you can find a place locally where players meet you can meet in person to throw the math rocks and use minis
so is it then overall faster to find a group locally?
Depends.
I cant speak to your locality me, I live in a area where gameshops are Not common and are to far to drive to. So online is best for me heh
Hello new person join a cleric
Hey guys! I’m planning on starting a campaign for my younger brother, and I was wondering if there are any resources for learning to dm and create a campaign with little experience that I could start from?
Hello I’m new to DnD and I don’t know anything. Only will do online and highly prefer if there’s another girl. Party of 4 + DM
I feel as though #find-a-game would be helpful: it is a channel dedicated for players and DMs looking for games.
#dnd-rules is more for the base DND rules. You can also talk in #character-discussion for help for actualizing a character.
If you're completely new to DMing 5e I'd recommend running the Sunless Citadel campaign, it's a good starting point and pretty fun too

Above are good resources
Hey fellow DnD enthusiasts, I’ve played many times before with friends but those days are long gone now and I’m wanting to meet new people to play with, any tips on how to go about that for someone who is shy and introverted lol

With the races that have slightly different descriptions / things between different books, do you choose whichever you want to or whichever the DM prefers or something?
(Looking at Kenku, and it shows Volo’s GtM and Mordenkainen Presents: MotM)
Speak to your DM about which books they allow
Fair enough, probably should’ve expected that.
Unrelated, but what’s the difference with ‘Prepared Spells’ and ‘Spell Slots’? Checking out the free rules, more so the warlock section, I would’ve assumed the prepared spell section would’ve been far less, but they seem normal, but i don’t know the difference really
(I have read through everything, may of missed it if it explained)
Prepared spells are the ones you have available to cast.
Spell slots are your capacity to cast, like ammunition.
If you don't have magic missile prepared, even if your character knows the spell, they can't cast it.
If you do have magic missile prepared, you can cast it at the cost of a spell slot. Some spells gain benefits from being "upcast" at a higher level than required, others don't. You must have a spell slot available of a value equal or more than the level of the spell to cast it.
Does d&d also have some board game or card game??
Warlocks are a little bit special. They have fewer spell slots and the ones they have are the highest they have available. The big difference is they recover all their slots on a short rest, unlike other casters.
#dnd-media can help there.
By default, no, but they're available/usable as accessories to add to your game
What are some things that brand new players have really enjoyed, that made them wanna stick with this hobby, or just thought was fun?
or what are some things that brand new players are interested in seeing/experiencing?
I get the part of needing to have it prepared, it’s just that I’m confused on how the spell slots and the prepped spells are different numbers, is it a case of prepped spells only come back for long rests, but spell slots for short rests? That’s the part I’m unsure of, I was already aware of the short rest spell slot thing for warlocks, its just the prepped that has me lost
(Sorry for the late reply, in a lesson currently.)
They're different numbers because they're different resources for different things
Not confusing at all 💔
Prepared spells are what spells you've picked out for that day of adventuring to have on hand. It's your arsenel. This is why you can change them each long rest for certain classes
Spell slots are the fuel, the 'bullets', you put into your spells to cast them. These also come back on long rests for most classes, some get a few (wizards) or all (warlocks) back on a short rest
It's all in the class description
You build your list of prepared spells. That's your menu. Then your spell slots are your budget. You can cast anything you like off the menu, but each one costs a spell slot.
Warlocks get a couple of big spells per short rest, and have to rely on their cantrips and cunning after that. Unless they're pact of the blade types.
Oh ok, that makes a LOT more sense now, what i misinterpreted it as was that you prepare the spell IN the spell slot sorta thing, so for the prepped things you need to prep like several of one spell to use it more than once, yeah? Just want to make sure since I know there’s quite a range of spells generally, just not sure on specifics
I just started learning but still everything is really really confusing...I dont know where or how to start

does anyone do pokemon dnds? Sorry if this sounds dumb, I'm pretty picky in doing normal dnds but if theres a pokemon dnd I can join, although I'm not even sure myself if pokemon dnds even exist, or even types of dnds. I've sort of done a pokemon dnd while playing Roblox, like a reinacted one but never really got to finish it bcuz of timezones and not being able to find a good time to roleplay together again,, wasnt completely sure if I should ask here or in dnd discussion
yeah, i've seen games like that.
but check #find-a-game
There are board games baised on d&d or a spesific setting but most are out of print. Heck there was even a ad&d electronic game
Hey I was just wondering where I'd like, go to find a campaign? I'm new and I've found DND interesting for a while just haven't gotten a campaign 😅 Can anyone help me find one that's welcome to new players and stuff? (Sorry I'm not sure where to put it exactly so I'm just gonna pop it in here. Sorry if it's in the wrong chat!)

It's certainly possible, but it's probably not something I'd recommend to someone looking to get their first experience with DnD. Pokemon and DnD are extremely different when it comes to the way each game is played, so any game that tries to do both is going to have to stretch the rules preeeetty hard in order to get anything even remotely enjoyable. There's other tabletop games that do what Pokemon wants to accomplish way better than DnD, and I personally think trying to play Pokemon using DnD as a framework does a disservice to both.
there are pokemon themed/focused ttrpg
Also as a note many such games would not be permitted to advertise here as for purposes of our server a game is only considered D&D if players can join and play using characters created from the free rules or from official D&D books.
Ugh i can't find a campaign that would let me in
All of the ones that match my time won't let me because im under 18
And the only one i managed to join got canceled
if i could get added to a campaign to test out my abilities and work on my game play would be nice im a newbie and want to get into this game bc my dear friend plays and im looking to join him
i have a newbie question … what makes a rpg, a d&d game? if you can make up your own settings and characters and what not, what defines it as d&d vs a different rpg like starfinder (thats only other one ive heard of)
The rules and mechanics!
DnD is a set of rules. The setting of the game and the story that occurs can change, but the rules that actually govern how things occur is Dungeons and Dragons.
There's also questions of genre, like D&D best accommodates a certain type of game/story.
I like to think of it like: "for best results" stick with traditional fantasy
would anyone be down to help me play through a one shot tonight
If you're looking for a game to play, check out #find-a-game to get started on this server! You're probably not going to get much luck looking for a game by asking in various channels (not to mention it's considered off topic in many of them!)
Just note that finding a game takes time. While it's possible you might find a game that you can play tonight, it's a little unlikely. Most games tend to take a couple of days or weeks to plan before they even get started.
like accessories for the actual game??? can you name some??
Is there a place here where I could get some reviews of my first character?
Some tips and such

Those are two difference systems actually. While they use the general d20 rule set they have different set of rules for spesifics

Can I use spells as a level 1 fighter if my species/background grants me a cantrip?
Yep!
W, thx
Only time you can't cast a spell if you have access to it is if you're a barbarian and raging
I see
Otherwise any character can cast spells if they get it through a racial ability or background or any other way

@nova apex dnd is fun. At times it can be hard to get into. Prepare yourself for lots of reading and attempting to remember without reading again. This is an adventure that will be taxing on your mind. It'll require some imagination. But if you get a good dm and a friendly party you're in for a treat welcome to dnd and happy adventuring
i have a ton of imagination haha so ill be good
but how do i start a party and whats a dm?
a dungeon master?
Feel free to add me. I'm in a server with 3 other dms and we just play each other campaigns to keep busy. Always accepting new players and encourage asking questions when you're unsure. Not every dm is the same. We all use different rules, different strategies. Yes dungeon masters
alrighty i added you! thanks dude!

thanks my B
Hey what do yall think of the illrigger
I think it's #third-party content, and not really a newcomer topic
If a spell I have has a 30 ft cone of aoe, whats the angle of the cone?
Um, where ever your aiming it at?
Or a 60 degree angle from base of cone to opening or widest part
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary should be a link to the rules in question
Helloo im trying to learn DnD and also find a group of people to play with sometimes.
Welcome. Check #find-a-game to see how group searching works here.
Easiest way to draw a cone in D&D is the base length = length
So a cone is 10ft wide at 10ft from the caster. A 30ft cone is 30ft wide at it's furthest point from the caster. You don't measure the angle (by design)

Hi
Yall in dnd games is the schedule strict? 😭 Like can I not leave due to special occasion or etc..?
I mean, that depends?
Some games are flexible as to when the group meets
For others, the schedule is fixed, but the game is flexible if players can't make it
And some tables won't play if someone can't make it
You always can leave, no one is gonna make you play
But depending on the reason you have, how much notice you give, how many sessions you've been missing etc, your table might ask you not to come back
helo lovelys
new and would love to join a one-shot or longer campaign to learn the game
Then you wanna check out #find-a-game, that has all the info you need to get started finding a game on this server
Just Join here, can you use bloodhunter class here?
this is just a discord to discuss d&d, we don't play d&d on this specific server
Oh ok
That'll be a question for your specific DM when you find one!
Is Fiend Patron the same as Otherwordly Patron?
The Fiend is a type of Otherworldy Patron
So yes?
No, otherwise I would have said yes
?
"Otherworldly Patron" is the overall term for all the specific patrons; Fiend, Great Old One, Archfey etc
So if I chose the Fiend
It's basically Fiend Patron
Or not basically, it is the Fiend Patron
Where are you seeing/finding the term "otherworldy patron"?
That might help clarify things
This old vid
Shit
What "old vid"?
Mb
(It was the term for patrons in the 2014 PHB)
Okay cool
Otherworldly Patron = Milkshake
Fiend = Chocolate Milkshake
Archfey = Strawberry Milkshake
Great Old One = Banana Milkshake
Fiend is a type of Otherworldly Patron, but not all Otherworldly Patrons are the Fiend
Just about making Constantine in DnD, and yes I know you're not supposed to watch a guide when starting out with DnD, but I already know things about DnD, I read the rules
Ok cool, thanks. So it's the same for me since I chose The Fiend anyways
It's the same for everyone. Every patron is otherwordly.
That's what Davyd tried to illustrate with the milkshake analogy.
No, I mean Otherwordly Patron and Fiend Patron is the same for me because I chose Fiend anyways
Yes, and I know that
Demonstration of how they're not the same
- if something refers to your Otherworldly Patron, it would be referring to your choice of Fiend Patron
- if something refers to your Fiend Patron, it would not be referring to non-Fiend Otherworldly Patrons
X being a type of Y means X does not equal Y
What I'm trying to say, is that my specific type of Otherwordly Patron IS the Fiend Patron
So I should not be considering the Fiend Patron subclass as another class, because it IS my class
patron is not subclass
in 2014 see below
Huh
Oh
No, it's a subclass
Warlock is your class
actually wait no it definitely is in every version
I got it confused with pact boons
You get what I mean
oh no you're right it is. I always just pictured the pact boon as the subclass ig
It was a common confusion with 2014. Luckily, 2024 made it clearer by moving pact boons to invocations.
No, I don't
Subclass and class are specific game terms that mean specific things
This is the newcomer channel where it's important to be clear on the foundationals of the game
How can I put a wanted for players thing
Read #find-a-game very carefully (the bot commands start with /looking-for)
If you're new to D&D and want a quick breakdown of what it's all about, I put together a video covering the basics! Would love feedback:https://youtu.be/hyJBbxGq58M
So I kinda want help with making a character, where do I start?
What kind of start should I go for since I'm starting now?
Np
Honestly any help is good help, I honestly wanna play DND but don't know how and no group
If it's a one shot, I would recommend a non-spellcaster to keep things simple.
Honestly not sure, I don't have a campaign hahah
@mint pecan Have you joined any games yet?
Not at all.
Honestly motivated to play a game of dnd to improve my ability to write interactions. I'm writing a story and I feel like the interactions between characters are weak a bit
You can see what games are open in #looking-for-players otherwise making a post for #looking-for-dm
See #find-a-game
DMs are usually kind enough to help ya with character creation
I did that and am waiting for someone to reach out
I do have an idea for a character, but not sure how I can implement him in a fair way
It also depends if you're playing 2014 5e or the new 2024 5e rules, or whatever rules the DM is running
for example this is a guide for 2014 5th edition rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters
So rules change every 10 years?
You basically select a race, roll or allocate ability stats, choose a class and the things that go with it, pick backgrounds/bio/roleplay, pick equipment, etc
i think whenever they have something ready but usually not for a long time
2024 and 2014 5e are pretty close to each other though
but you would have to check with your DM on what ruleset you're running
its just a cooincidence that its exactly 10 years
and this time, the rules only got minor changes overall
Honestly this is all probably unnecessary information for a very new player.

gives them an idea to not waste time creating a character until their DM tells them what ruleset
Hmmmm honestly, idk how the kind of character I wanna make would be implemented into the game. He's sorta like sarkan from mtg in a way (I think) where he's a human with dragon abilities (maybe dragon based magic), he would primarily use light elemental energy but is also prone to dark element. He would start as a swift twin blader
Welcome! The best place to start is with the Free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Dragon magic is a perfect option: the Draconic Sorcerer is very, very on brand for Sarkhan
In all honesty though, the DM will most likely help and teach you how to make a character. They will have the books or whatever
I do have a jist on the basics, tho finding a group and making a character have been hurdles for me. I did watch dimension 20 so that's partly why I'm interested
But thing is, even he doesn't understand how he attained it. If I were to explain it.... A sort of natural magic? Like something that's been part of him since forever but seemingly coming out of nowhere
That's exactly what the Sorcerer class in DnD is all about! Innate magic.
He classifies as human and was born from a human mother and father, but he suddenly manifests magic his family never tapped into
It also acts as a sort of curse and is mostly dictated by his emotions. If his emotions are unstable dragonic features start to sprout
He primarily learnt melee fighting tho
Hope that makes sense?
Now we're beginning to get a little more difficult to replicate. Very few magic class options are good for melee combat.
I'd give the character options a read through and see if anything catches your eye.
Oh nono, what I meant is he started as a combatant, and was training as such
He never even thought of using magic
Then still sounds like a Sorcerer to me!
His magic manifested out of nowhere essentially
so you want to be a melee fighter with two weapons, but also use draconic magic?
The draconic magic being not yet controlled, and hence a liability more than an asset
yeah this one cant be reproduced faithfully. you got to make some compromises and reflavor stuff
And he'd think it's a curse at first
one suggestion that might work with a bit of reflavor:
Fiend Warlock with pact of the Blade
you got fire and dark themed magic, and can be decent in melee with a weapon
Hmmm I assume contradicting magic can't coexist within one character?
No, it's more that both big powerful spells and impressive melee combat are not really available to a character at the same time.
You've got to make a concession on one or the other
Oh, no, I didn't mean big powerful spells. More like.... How can I explain it... It's not like casting spells, but more like channeling elemental energy
maybe elements monk? you probably arent using your swords a lot though
New to this discord. Got an Idea for a character, an Eladrin Elf warlock with a Pact with The Pale Night. Which historically doesn’t have a great track record with Eladrin Elves. Would it make sense for it to attempt to deceive my warlock into thinking it’s celestial? Perhaps forging the pact under a pseudonym?
maybe we move the in depth character discussion to #character-discussion ?
Hmmmm ..... I can give an example of how his ability can work:
For example, he usually will fight with his swords, if he had control over them, he can maybe channel light element mana into one of the blades for an effect, and dark element mana on the other.
so the whole "the character cant control their abilities" thing doesnt really work in dnd
we got wild magic sorcerer and barb, but their stuff is pretty limited and mostly positive random effects
His body would also be able to morph to have more dragonic features.
But here, he essentially doesn't know HOW to use them, or to stop their random activations
He would initially believe it was an inflicted curse
While I applaud your creativity there no feasible way to make that happen mechanic wise. There no mana systems just spell slots, either you can use em or not.
Honestly if you want dragon like elements but don’t mind a slow burn. Dragonic bloodlines sorc is a thing
The idea would be a slow burn
Like, the idea is that he wouldn't use mana or anything, just that his body will sometimes morph some limbs involuntary
I think I'm confusing y'all and not getting my point across, I'm sorry TwT
I really like your idea, but I think it would do you more good to learn how the game works first. Afterwards, you can create a character using the game mechanics, as opposed to trying to find a mechanic that fits your character.
When the 30 foot cone I have can be increased by double the area of affect, i wanted to know if that could be inferred as the spread is increased
I'll look into the character sheet for a bit
Sorta learn a bit more on how it works
Who knows, maybe there's a class I can look into
Despite how much modern media has portrayed it as such, DnD isn't a game where you can do anything. There are rules and structures to it, so starting by learning those structures can help you get an idea of what your character can achieve and what simply isn't possible for a player character.
I am admittedly talking about my idea for the character and his progress tho
At the start, he's just a dual wielder who has a secret
I assure you, we have been taking that into account.
.... Wait wouldn't multiclassing in the middle of the campaign help?
we generally dont recommend multiclassing for new players, but sure. it might get you closer to the character fantasy
Yes, is highly recommended not to multiclass as a new player. It's a complicated optional system that can cause your build to fall apart without a good understanding of the game.
Not right away, I meant when I'm deep in the campaign
Please don't ping me, thanks

Hi everyone. Is anyone aware of any discord servers for groups of parents and kids to come together to play? Looking for a place to play with my elementary school age son.
Hi, I am a middle schooler and have always stugled to find other kids to play dnd with, usealy your best bet is with in person stores
Ok I think for the most part I have a character sheet
Thanks. Yes, that seems to be a challenge. No luck so far on the local stores here, but thought perhaps there might be some discord servers for parents/kids floating out there somewhere.
When I was high school (British high school so around American middle school age) a teacher started a dnd group on break/lunch times. this was years ago so i don't remember much but you could look into asking your child's middle school if you could do something like that, maybe even after school hours. best of luck!
The only issue you may find is the time's and such of parent's to actually go there and even be interested, another idea is setting up a group at your home and putting posters n such up at the middle school
Also check your local public libraries
helloo ive been working on a character thats like a cleric that worships cthulu what stats would be best for me wanting to worship it as much as possible and have my power through it (my dm is fine with power through cthulu but just wanted to know how i could do it)
Well the DM defines the deities of their world/setting/campaign - so ultimately that's a questions for your DM.
im mainly just wondering what points i should go for a good cleic lol (were doin point buy on dnd beyond)

You don’t need to know the lore thoe that’s extra fluff. Or the fm will explain or make stuff up
Example: I’m my lost mines game I gave the legend of the bagman, the guy was a halfing named Bilbo baggens. Who diced to hide in a bag of holding and became a monster.
Click it to go to the channel (it's like a link).
That channel explains how our Looking For Game channels work and explains the bot commands to create a post in the LFG channels.
Hey guys, me and my 3 other friends are Gonna start a campaign 2 with our DM. And we wanna play the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Do we just play as a barbarian, fighter, bard and artificer. But the thing is we don't have the artificer... So would there be an alternative class that would still fit donetello's character?
Ps, our DM is still unaware that we're playing the TMNT
Try that question in #character-discussion - this channel is more for new to D&D folks to get help with getting started with the core agme rules and mechanics.
Hi peeps
Hello there
Hello guys, I'm new here, since I installed D&D Beyond and made my first character and downloaded some essentials I was thinking about learning the game more. Can I play in someones campaign as my first match?
Welcome
Here on the server we have a procedure for finding games. You can check #find-a-game for how it works.
If you need more advice relating to group finding, have a look at the amazing guide iamrazorwing put together: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
Thank you I submitted there the find players command, should I now just search for people or?
You can look through the games in #looking-for-players and respond in the threads under each ad
Just so you know dnd isn’t like an MMO so you’ll not just drop into a game quickly it can take a while to find a game
Alright then I understand, thank you
hi everyone, what do i need to buy/do if i want to start playing dnd with my 3 roommates?
none of us have played anything like it before

Welcome!
Technically, all you need is the free rules (linked above), a way to roll dice (you can find dice rolling websites online if you don't have physical ones), and a few hours!
ohh, honestly i was thinking of buying a physical set because it seems more immersive and fun, but there are so many when i search it up that I don't know what to get
I don't think there's a current Starter Set with the latest version of the rules, but starting out that's not really going to be an issue for you.
As a Paladin, when I level up, how do I know what spells I get?
If you look at the paladin class table it will tell you how many you know for what lvl and you pick from the paladin spell list
Some spells you auto get at certain lvls from your subclass
Silly question but is there a way to do a like a test to see which class and origin will suit me best, full disclosure i am extremely extremely new!
Okay, I'm getting ready to be a DM for the first time, and I'm trying to figure everything out. My buddy is gonna be a wizard, and I'm reading the character sheet, and im reading the rulebook and I'm reading the free rules. The whole spells system doesn't make sense to me. How does the spellbook work vs a spell scroll? I think I understand the casting of spells, but learning spells is still throwing me off.
I'm sure there are user created 'tests' like that, but I'd just read through the short blurbs here, see which one speaks to you the most, and then read up on that.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes
Spell scrolls are essentially 'consumables'. You use them once, they're gone.
A wizards spell book, on the other hand, is their spell repository.
So is a Spell scroll a way to add a spell to a spellbook?
A wizard can consume a spell scroll and some money to add that spell to their spell book, yeah.
Though that's not the only way for wizards to add a spell to their spell book, nor is it the main purpose of a spell scroll.
And regardless of that, wizards gain new spells on a level up too, so giving them more spells to learn via spell scrolls or purchaseable spells isn't strictly necessary.
I've got the stormwreck isle starting set. Why does the wizard character sheet have a full list of all the spells a wizard can learn? Would it not make more sense for only the DM to see? How do i determine which spells to give the wizard, or do they decide when they level up?
When they level up, the wizard can select two spells from the wizard spell list to learn (to add to their spell book). That's part of the class.
Note that the Stormwreck Isle premades are a bit streamlined in that they have their starting spells already defined and the list of available spells to learn is smaller than it is in the full rules.
Okay, so I think I got it. I had an idea of how things worked, but then I kept reading and got myself confused.
I made a cheat sheet for my magic users, and I wrote this. Would you say it's accurate?
"At the start of the campaign and after a long rest, you must choose 4 spells from your spellbook to prepare. You can learn more spells to add to your spellbook throughout the adventure. Spells can be used anytime, but during combat they will consume Spell Slots."
Leveled spells always consume spell slots, wether in combat or out of it.
The exception are ritual spells, which are labelled as such. Those can be cast without a spell slot, but take longer (+10 minutes) to cast if cast as a ritual.
The 'prepare 4 spells from your spell book' is correct at first level.
Yeah, that last line was a homebrew rule I'm implementing. And yes, the 4 spells part is for 1st level only. But overall, would you say I get the gist?
I would also just make sure that this is only being given to the wizard. If there's other magic users, their rules for spellcasting are going to be very different.
Oh gosh, I didn't realize that lmao. There's a cleric and Paladin too. I thought was pretty much the same.
I would caution against that homebrew rule, since it's going to allow the wizard to be much more flexible an proactive in overall problem solving than classes without spells.
I don't know if I would recommend using this as a homebrew rule. Spell Slots exist because magic solutions tend to outperform non-magic solutions to problems. By letting your spellcasters cast infinite spells outside of combat, you're really going to make your martial classes feel useless very quickly.
Yeah, each class has their own Spellcasting rules. Note that Wizard is notoriously the most complicated though, so all the others will seem much easier by comparison
Well. That's 2 to 1, so I guess I'll change that rule back.
If I'm allowed to give some more advice, I do recommend trying to play the game as it is written first.
You can change everything if you want, but as the old adage goes: "understand the rule before you break it"
I gotcha. That's fair enough. So do you guys think I'm good on the wizard rules? I'll re-read over the other classes today. Were having our first session tomorrow, I'm excited and nervous 😅
Yeah, you've got it mostly down. Remember that it's also up to the players to read and understand their class as well. It's nice that you're providing some resources, but the responsibility falls them as well!
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources some cheat sheets and ref guides that could help
Yeah, my biggest worry is that they aren't gonna read it all, and they're gonna look to me to figure answer their questions. I'd rather be overprepared than under.
Please! Any and all advise is welcome. This is my first time playing D&D at all, and I got voted to be DM. It's quite intimidating.
I hope yall have fun! Being the DM is dope and I love it, despite being apprehensive about it at first. I can recommend this youtube playlist to give you some context and solid footing as a DM (it helped me)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-YZvLUXcR8&list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_&index=1
In addition, the Stormwreck book "Running the Adventure" section also has good general DM guidance that I would underline.
Just making sure, for Elementalism, specifically beckon water, if you create a cup of water, if someone drinks it, it wont evaporate right?
D&D Beyond will copy your dice rolls to the campaign log once a DM has invited you. Aside from that you just need a way to chat. Discord voice or text are popular at the moment.
Fair warning that if your DM uses a Virtual Table Top program to display scenes and battle positions, most of them don't play on mobile very well. That's from my experience, at least.

That's certainly a great way to know exactly what to expect from your game.

Hello
what choice between 2014 and 2024 5e would you recommend for a first time dm
i want to clarify something, i can choose classes like melee, summoner and stuff like that, right?
Classes, yes. Take a look:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes
There's not much between them, though 2024 is an easier read overall. You can check the Free Rules out in the link I just posted.
If you want to do 2014 you can offer more species options (termed "races" there) but there are some differences in how the parts of a character come together.
Here's a link to the old Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes
wizard may add new spells to their spell book by copying them from other spellbooks or spell scrolls or similar magic items (when ur dm is nice)
typically for anything that is consumed on use you only get one try to copy it
hello how is everyone doing?
What does ASI mean?
For reference, I asked about a character choice and in a reply, a guy said “(+their choice of ASI)” at the end, which is what I’m confused on
Ability Score Improvement
oh yeah sorry my bad, should have specified
you get to add +1 to two stats, or +2 to one stat
Oh damn didn’t expect you to see that
Oh ok, I thought it was fixed to dex and wis or whatever it was so didn’t think it was stat related honestly
yeah there are two sources for kenku (as a playable race), either Monsters of the Multiverse, or Volo's Guide to Monsters. One ASI is limited to dex and wis, the other is complete choice
i believe it was Volo's Guide that had it limited to dex/wis
Hi
Most stuff have been upgraded and MOnsters of the Multiverse is the more normal one ot use
I've actually never played d&d before I figured it would be good to talk to some people that have actually played
yeah, only reason i brought up the VGtM one is because they were worried kenku was mostly going to be usable as a rouge type character. Was just letting them know that MotM allows for a more varied ability score improvement
so they could easily build for the warlock they wanted
Hey! I'm reading the dragons of stromwreck isle book, and it mentioned a trap. It says this "if it hits, it deals 2 (1d4) piercing damage [...] or take 3 (1d6) poison damage."
Would the trap deal the 2/3 damage or the 1d4/1d6 damage? Is it up to me? Is it a combo?
2 is the average of a d4, and 3 is the average of a d6. You can choose as DM whether to use the averages given, or roll the dice.
Personally for low level adventurers I leave it as the average. It gives the players a clearer idea how much danger they're in.
You'd have to ask in #1029833015423143957 about what triggers the different amounts of damage, though.
Thank you 🥰

So me and my friends have run out of campaigns to play, typically I would write them but I'm out of Ideas, notebooks, and money to continue with that option. Does anyone have recommendations for campaigns that 8 kids (including our DM) whose ages span from 11-16, and are currently just levels one and two, but will still enjoy?
I know sending links to websites is against the guidelines so if you tell me the name I could try my luck to see what I could find on the internet.
I'm fairly new to dungeons and dragons but I get the concept and I'm still learning some basic rules.
The following items on D&D Beyond can be claimed at no cost.
^ Also some free things to claim on DnDBeyond
The DMs Guild materials often comes as PDFs
The DnDBeyond materials are less printable out of the box but folks can print pages to PDF from their browser and then stitch it together to print for their own use.
Uh... Hello. Level 1 Wizard here. How's it going?
@echo kelp good to know going forward. Thanks
its going good but for your sake i hope you didnt dump con
Nah, I went for INT and CHA.
uh ... is there a LFG kinda thing here?
Is deciding Ability Score by dice roll still great?
I used this method and I got 13,10,13,16,17 and 10
Dunno what you mean by great specifically, but it's still an option
Although it's usually an option you get at your DMs discretion and even then you generally only roll in front of your DM
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Any tips for making country names?
Maybe ask in #dm-world-building ?
I am reading through the PHB'24, and in the travel section of chapter 1, it mentions that depending on the pace and how long the travel was, the party travels a certain distance. How is the time kept track of?
What do you mean?
Like how is the in-game time kept track of? Especially the part where it mentions a stable creature that isn't healed gains 1hp after 1d4 hours, how is the hours kept track of?
sorry, didn't know this was a thing.
It's something the DM tracks in their notes, such as the current date of the campaign or how many in-game days have passed since the campaign started
Generally tracking down to the hour isn't needed between sessions
Yeah I just write down the date at the start of session 1, then mark down every day that passes during the game . I’ll work out what date it is from that for the next session, etc
Although for things like recharging magic items I leave that for players to manage
hi!! i'm very new to D&D and has been taking interest in it lately. The problem is no one in my place actually knows how to play and we're all complete beginners. I'm surrounded by tutorial videos and character sheets that i'm still afraid to use and step into my character's shoes and most of my friends expects me to be a DM.

hey yall, not really new to dnd I played once and just watch videos mostly from Critcrab. Me and my friends are planning to play a campaign none of us are expereienced to be a dm. do you guys know any discords or communities specifically that are open to teaching noob dms? i really wanna get into it but not sure where to go from there
I sm confused on how this sever works
Go to the server guide in the channel list. All the way at the top.
It still confusing
If you share your specific questions in #dnd-discussion, folks might be able to answer! This space is for getting acquainted with the game itself.
They told me to come here
I just don't get why I can't ask to join a campion in #dnd-discussion
it's the official discord server, so it covers a lot of ground. Think of the different channels like the rules in D&D where a specific rule (in this case "channel") beats a general rule (in this case #dnd-discussion being the general D&D chat.
If the thing you want to talk about/ask about has a specific channel, that is where it belongs.. #dnd-rules and #character-discussion for example.
this channel is kind of a catch-all general for folks new to the game, so we allow a little more flexibility in questions/chatter being "on topic" as opposed to in a specific other channel.
Does that help? or is something else confusing?
Soliciting games is off-topic. We have #find-a-game with info about how to use the Looking for Group/Game channels.
because we have entire channels dedicated to finding a group. Allowing form-ups in the other channels would lead to those spaces being flooded with that chatter.
It just so confusing
if you are a player looking for a DM, you'd want to use the command that lets you post in #looking-for-dm
And I don't know it
Type /looking and you'll see a list of options pop up. Select the channel you want to post in, hit Enter, and the bot will bring you to a form to fill out.
It dose not let me in that Chanel type
Type it in any server channel where you have permission to type.
It can be here, even! The form will not be visible to anyone else.
Oh
Ok I need help with my character
Some others helped me with some stuff but I need help finalizing
what do you need help with?
Well I have the alignment class down but I don't know if the race I choose matters or not
I'm a lawful neutral warlock from a crowded kingdom which prioritizes the study of magic
the species does not matter - as long as you like it. Alignment these days is also more of a guideline for shaping a character rather than a huge impact on the game.
There have been magical items in the past that say things like "requires attunement by a Good creature (or Neutral or Evil, etc..)" and in that case it would kick in.
Alright I got some help from some other people I figured it out thanks
Does anybody need help with anything? I'm not a mod or anything I just want to help if I can.
I only have phone
D&D Beyond will copy your dice rolls to the campaign log once a DM has invited you. Aside from that you just need a way to chat. Discord voice or text are popular at the moment, both can be done by phone.

1 I have some pals of mine from high school a while back. I created a server for them and we play dnd before. Just now it’s flat dead. Is it okay to mention that on the LFDM. I’d bet they are still interested. In playing.
You should mention whatever information you think would be relevant and useful to a DM who is looking for players
I was hoping I could do that on looking for a dm. Because seriously I just need a dm and potentially another player.
if anyones looking for someone to play with im pretty much completely new but willing to learn 😅
you don't look for (or promote) games in this channel, instead you wanna follow the instructions in #find-a-game
gotcha sry 🙂
Good morning! New here and a full 100% beginner in D&D. Wanna learn about D&D and the community. 🙌
I ran into a situation last night that I'm not sure how to handle. Some of my players have ranged attacks with their melee weapons. Like throwing a dagger or something. When they throw it, do they need to go pick it back up? Or do they have an infinite amount of daggers?
It follows the logic of: you threw the dagger, now you don't have the dagger in your hand anymore.
Where exactly it ends up is up to you as a DM, but generally it's assumed that they can pick it back up. Either after combat or during combat, using their free object interaction.
As for ammunition such as arrows, it's assumed that half of the expended ammunition can be recovered after combat. The rest is lost or broken.
Cool cool. We were using the beyonddnd maps thing. When they their their dagger, I drew it on the map where it landed, and I made them go pick it up before they could use it again. Sounds like that was the right move. They didn't use any arrows or similar ammo, but that is very good to know. Thanks for that.
Well a dagger cost money right just play it like that. Arrows swords same thing.
yo can someone help me with making a custom character im new to dnd and tryed playing it with chat gpt but that doesnt work because i thought it can help but it missed some aspects of the character sheet and it has the memory of a goldfish
if your asking why im playing dnd those animated funny moments of dnd did
Well um have you tried the app dnd beyond before it does help. Race dice character back ground just trying to get a sense where you’re at?
i cant find the race i wanted and based on my username im pretty sure you can guess what im going for
also im on dnd beyond rn in the past when i tryed to pick my race its always the same group of spieces like dragonborn human goblin etc but rn im stuck on proficincy
Stuck in what sense?
rogue skill proficincy i mean i think i know some of the skills but im not entirey sure on what some of them do
This is a good explanation of the various skills: https://www.masterthedungeon.com/understanding-5e-skills/
thx
Note that the only species available by default on DnD Beyond are the free ones. All other official species have to be purchased in order to use.
ah dang
i dont have any moeny lol
The usual recommendation is to stick to one of the few species if you're new to the game. That way you can get a feel of whether or not you like the system before you decide to make any purchases.

Hi I’m new to dnd and I made my first character (a wizard human) but I’m looking to make a backup character. Are there any specific characters that are easier to learn than others?
Characters witout spellcasting are less complex, but if you're willing to put in the time to learn, any class is feasible!
In general, characters that can cast spells will always be more complicated than ones that don't
And not to scare you off your first choice, but Wizard is admittedly considered the most complex class.
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
Heh, fair.
I did not realize what I got myself into then😭😂 thank you!
But that's not to say that a class like Wizard or Druid is insurmountable for a new player. It just requires a little more work to understand than others.
hey are there any eu online dms ?
Browse through #looking-for-players!
sorry to ping do i dm the person if im intrested ?
Or post in the thread.
Hey sorry about not helping you. I was focusing on other things and I was busy when I texted that.
It alr
looking for alternatives to the 5e character sheet, any recommendations ?
Like a paper / PDF sheet?
sheets websites apps anything really
The one you're going to get recommended the most on this server is DnD Beyond, which is owned by the company that owns DnD.
is it any good ?
you can also search "5e Simplified Character Sheet" and theres lots of third-party people that have made different approaches. for like full alternatives
but yes dnd beyond is unfortunately quite good even though im not the biggest fan of WoTC and hasbro
seems like a ton of people dont like WoTC
That's probably a discussion for a different channel.
pretty much yeah. phsical 5e sheet, PDF 5e sheet, Digital service acting like an interactive 5e sheet (DnD Beyond), or third party alternatives
some virtual tabletops have their own implementations, like FoundryVTT
but thats designed for use if you are running a game throught that software
Welcome @serene stirrup
hey
i know this is a weird one but
what would you recommend a guy who just played a few oneshots and is getting into his first campaign
probably dnd beyond since it manages your spells, rests, and all the other features that you'd usually have to use pencil and eraser for quite well. and can also roll checks for you.
This is assuming you have access to the sourcebooks you will be using on the dnd beyond marketplace
If you dont own the materials digitally, and want to play 2014 dnd, or maybe use expansion materials, then probably try and use an editable PDF character sheet

hey all, how does dim light and darkness effect combat for non darkvision species?
Dim light doesn't affect combat, just your perception checks.
Darkness prevents a creature from seeing in the dark area, meaning that they incur similar disadvantages to being blinded in those areas.
Dim Light only provides disadvantage on perception checks, so it has no effect on combat.
Darkness means an area is heavily obscured, which means that any creature that tries to see into, out of, or through that area will have the blinded condition
The blinded condition means you cannot see your opponents, so you will have disadvantage on attacks against them, and they will have advantage on attacks against you
BUT if they also cannot see in the darkness, then the same is true for them. If both you and your opponent are blinded, then the advantage and disadvantage cancel each other out, and you actually just roll a single d20 like normal
darkness does not reduce the range of any effects
Disadvantage attacks made by the creature, advantage on attacks made against the creature (by enemies who can still see them), inability to cast any spells that require you to target an area or creature they can see.
quick confusion to solve here
can i get some inspiration on what to use retainers for as a knight (background)
i know you cant make them fight but am curious what they can be used for
when you get a home base they are good for looking after the bastion, and potentially working on projects in the background
eg, setting you up a research laboratory or alchemy room or whatever you need. they can greet guests and host them until you return, etc
literally just guys that can do helpful things for you when your time is better spent doing things only an adventurer can do
may thy maidens follow my command
what if you dont get a home base
retainers are for role play. They shouldn't go on adventures
i mean. they are a bit less useful probably but they can still help you out with mundane things. Need to deliver a letter to another city? they can travel with a caravan and do it
yeah. its for RP and some social encounter use
do i just have them on hand when on the road
up to your DM, i highly doubt that would make sense in most dnd stories though
yea probably
if you have retainers you probably have somewhere where you are from that is a civilization
