The books have information that help you understand the game within them
Some bring new content too
Books have set campaigns, and you can understand more
Generic when did you start playing dnd?
I thought that the dm create the campaign?
Or you means the books havr default ones that can be used by everyone?
The DM usually creates the campaign, yes, but there are also pre-built campaigns
Yea the dm creates the campaign, yet sometimes they can use books that have pre built campaigns
I don't remember exactly, but I've played one short campaign with my friends that fell apart, and a few one shots.
So pretty recently
I'm looking for a campaign in this server for the first time
So if i don't buy the books does that put me in some kind of disadvantage?
Yeah
Hm.. I never thought of that
Sort of, but the only one that's overly important is the Player's Handbook, and the Dungeon Master's Guide too if you're a DM
The 2024 rules are confusing me I’ve been playing since 4e
So I’ve practically become a starter again
Lol, I only have experience with the 5e rules, but 5.5e doesn't seem too different
It’s just some small changes that make players too powerful
Dragonborns now have wings,
Oh god
Yep
Paladin and barbarians become broken
Now there’s this frenzy ability
Why?????
Is that similar to rage?
Yeah it can only be used by barbarians and must be triggered by rage
I have no idea what you guys talking about
So it’s a rage 2.0 now
Don't worry about it, we're just having a sidebar conversation
Uh just now the rule set changed from fifth edition to (fifth point five?) 5.5 edition and it was a wierd change
Let me ask
Are the classes fixed?
Maybe fifth and a half edition would be the proper term?
I don't understand
It asked me to pick a class and i choose this
Although I usually just read it as "five point five e"
Yeah I give up
I. Have no idea what that is
It’s fine dw
There are multiple versions of DnD. Right now, we're in version 5.5.
So a class is the type of person you are
Like updates ?
I’m a paladin
Yes
A hypocrite huh
Eh not really it took a decade for half an update
I am jk
When you make a character sheet, you choose a class for your character. Your class affects what your character is capable of, such as wizards being able to cast spells and rogue's being good at sneaking around. The thing in this server that asked you to pick a class doesn't really mean anything, I suppose it's just to show off what your favourite class is
Ofc bro why did you think I chose this one?
A decade ? How long has d&d been around for ?
I hate hypocrites. Except for me
Uh…
Probably since the 1970's or so, but I don't know the actual date
U saying that i have 50 years worth of rules i need to learn ?!!
What if I’m only acting as a hypocrite in dnd because that’s literally what a paladin is?
Hell no
Lol, no
No no you only have to learn 5e
The different editions are separate rulesets. 5e is the most common
There aren’t gonna be a lot of games with 5.5 e though
If you want to play 5e, you wouldn't have to learn 4e for example
Why, due to the balance?
We are still 5e the 24 books are just minor updates and rule changes not a new edition
3.5 was so broken so sad you missed out
I am really way over my head here
Maybe
Oh sorry, I first saw it referred to as 5.5e online so I just clung to that term.
Not maybe at all but not really a #dnd-newcomers topic
Just where do i start
Where is the step zero
Just relax… dnd may seem complex, but there’s nothing much to it but the rules

Read the Player's Handbook.
Yeah whoops sorry
Do what Enoki said too
Is it online ?
Basic free rules are in that dyno post
Yes, there are also physical copies
You should first read the Free Rules though
They contain 90% of the Player's Handbook and are, well, free!
...You know, knowing that those existed would have been very helpful for my wallet
Oopsie
…mine too….
TIL
Thirty bucks down the drain 😭
i like the feel of the pages
Yeah but that’s it…
So, anyone looking to buy a second hand PHB? /j
Uh… sorry, passs
I'll throw in a free chicken nugget
they got that neat 3 pack of rule books with the limited gold foil, but not everyone brings their books to sessions innit
But this is pretty off topic it’s best to talk about this in a dm or somewhere else
Yeah
i did make a one sheet for my spells tho with citations to the page source in the PHB tho
Generic can I dm you?
Sure, but I'm not great at holding conversations, so it's probably going to fizzle out soon
Doesn’t matter
Hi I am a returning player/dm and i was wondering what would be the best way for me to sit down with someone and create my own campaign
is there a specific type of campaign where everyone makes a charecter from: there own format/diffrent series (example:i make a monkey d luffy charecter sheet while someone makes a charecter from any other franchise)
I dont think so at least not officially
but im sure people have ran games like that before
theyre just not your standard affair
goated pfp
thanks lol
Come up with an idea. Pitch it in #dm-discussion if you're doing plot first, or #dm-world-building if setting. Try and give the idea in three sentences or less.
Then break it out into at least three scenarios. What's the start, middle and end of this likely to be like?
hellooo, I'm new to D&D and wondering how people find a group to play with, tried discord servers and roll20 lfg but never really goes anywhere
Spread your net wide there are lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
It’s can take awhile to find a game though
ayo im cool with that, ill have a geez at it now, cheers
Im a returning player. used to play like 5 years straight. Just finished building a new wiz (2024)
hi im just wondering how to dm a game im intrested but never got the chance to try
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.

roll20 and dndb dont seem to line up nicely do they. i made the new char in dndb anyway. seemed more official
Roll20 and DnDBeyond are two different tools run by different companies.
DnDBeyond is owned and operated by Wizards of the Coast who actually own D&D. DnDBeyond is a digital toolkit for helping folks play D&D.
Roll20 is owned by OneBookshelf (folks behind RPG Drivethru and DMsGuild) and are licensed to sell D&D material and is primarily focussed on providing a Virtual Tabletop for playing games (not just D&D).
If you're on Chrome, the Beyond20 extension can send your feature info and rolls to a VTT like Roll20. You still need a character sheet for your pic and token but aside from the name you can leave it blank.
yee thank you both. found all that in my research. ended up just subbing dndb for the year for the vtt, though while i surf LFG it seems very disonant in terms of tool / platform. I tried the extension too, its alright
made a roll20 character manually from what i did in dndb. thats where some of it didnt line up all the way between platforms
I have a question about the rogue weapeons
ask away
how are we supposed to map battles if we are not going to spend on little statues?
you can use placeholders for physical battles
Paper maps
or use TV screen to display a digital map and tokens
Are rogues only supposed to use weapons that have the finesse or light property only?
rogues can use other weapons, but finesse or ranged is required for sneak attack
you are only proficient by default in light and finesse weapons, but if you got proficiency for a longbow for example, a rogue can use that just fine
its not a good idea to use weapons you arent proficient in, because you have a much small chance to hit, but it can be done
Does this include melee weapons
yes
Simple and Martial?
as a rogue, you want melee weapons with finesse, and ranged weapons your are proficient in
simple or martial doesnt matter
Or just Martial
The book says: Simple weapons and Martial weapons that have the Finesse or Light property. Can you clarify please?
when you start at level 1, you gain proficiency in a a selection of weapons, depending on your class.
Edited!
rogues get the following proficiencies:
-all simple weapons
-all martial weapons with finesse
-all martial weapons with light
(this doesnt mean all light weapons will do a lot for you in actual gameplay, like sickles for example, or light hammers, but you are proficient with them)
So it's not all simple weapons just the ones with finesse and light property
yes
Observe, the rapier.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/equipment/28-rapier
Has the finesse property so qualifies for use with the sneak attack feature.
2014 rogue got all simple weapons, but they changed that for the 2024 version
wait
actually, let me check if I am correct
okay please ignore what I said
you still get all simple weapons
I will edit the message above to correct things
Thanks
okay I fixed my answer
The new book confuses me a bit
Hiya all! quick question, do you know if strixhaven is compatible with 2024 players handbook? or would i have to enable 2014 legacy in a character creator for the spells/backgrounds etc? 🙂 (and is xanathar's guide also compatible? )
Both should be compatible, though if on DDB I believe you will have to enable legacy content
Just make sure to manually adapt any backgrounds from Strixhaven to the 2024 format if you plan to use them
ah how does one do this? i saw the custom background, but it didnt seem to have an option to add a feat or ASI 😦 and thankyou for the answer!
I believe you might have to manually add a feat onto the character and/or homebrew the background. I’d ask in #ddb-support just to make sure
Im in a campaign already but i have a friend of mine who isnt in this server who is in need of a campaign, are there any tips anyone can give on where to look or what to join to get an online campaign?
I made a Looking for Game/Group guide that might help: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms
This is the official WotC discord, so 2024 is considered the primary edition here. I'm sure can find a 2014 focused discord if you search
That is not necessarily correct
Fifth Edition is the main focus. You just have to clarify which version of the Rules you are refering to
Unless otherwise specified... the most current ruleset is always assumed.
That's why I consider it 2024 focused
Because it's assumed to be the default unless you say otherwise
You can still discuss 2014 here, but they seem to only want 2014. Which isn't going to happen here.
"Stop trying to make Fetch happen!"
14 and 24 are still 5e and both are valid for discussion on this server
I never said you couldn't talk about 2014. I just said this wasn't a 2014 focused discord, because the assumed default is 2024 unless you say otherwise
Which to me, counts as being a 2024 focused discord where you can also talk about other versions if you wish.
If I say something and the assumption is 2024 rules unless I say otherwise, how is that not 2024 focused?
Though honestly, I'm not sure it actually matters what I think about it or is a discussion for this channel. I was mostly just telling the original poster that if they don't want to see 2024 at all, this probably isn't the server for them.
Of course, that post is now deleted so I look like I just started this conversation for no reason instead 😅
hello!!! im not really new to dnd (started near feb last year) but i am VERY new to being a dm. ive been in 2 campaigns so far but they havent been really SERIOUS campaigns yk?? anyways, i was wondering if you guys have tips to give on writing / planning out my first session. i have the main world built rn and i have a start / ending to the campaign but i genuinely have NO idea on how to script it / write it out or plan it... 😞
Hello! I am completely new to D&D, ive been wanting to get into it for a while but didn't have the time, now that I have I am lost in a sea of game editions and what not, so any recommendation would be welcomed 😅
@spark tangle Welcome! I am new too played only once this weekend and enjoyed it!

does the server get so many new players all the time? :0
thank you!!
ive been meaning to join for a while i just never have until now 😞
Pretty much every day!
That's probably more #dm-discussion!
seems like it lol
I think I'll join some random group once I get through the rules, my friends don't seem too enthusiastic about D&D
better too I suppose, takes off the load of starting off as a DM
first time i played D&D 2 days ago, theme was Isekai'd into a D&D world and really enjoyed it and if i knew more, i wouldve interacted a lot more rather than sit and watch for the most part. But the main concept i love was the free choices u can do and the way you can interact with everything around you.
based on the story of course
I really got into the idea of playing D&D from the Viva la dirt league and deerstalker skits on it
and I suppose I really did love the idea of an RPG where I was free to make so many different choices
unfortunately my friends are the same way but im forcing them to play by putting a ton of effort into it LMFAO
sigh... it's a bit hard to convince them when one wants to play valo and another minecraft. Out of 4 only 1 seems to be open to experience it and I am still waiting for another's reply (I really just thought of getting them to play today)
im in the exact same spot 😞 i get it
id also be a dm of like 6 people. if matt mercer can do it, so can i frfr
hey all...just joined here, how you guys doin?
wow newbies keep pouring in
(I'm new too)
so you new to DnD?
or just the server
haha yeah, I am playing a campaign with friends and I found myself daydreaming about the sessions, so I was like "damn I need to explore the online community!" 😄
😭 you're lucky you have friends that got around to playing with you
I'm getting a headache convincing mine
kind of, played for a couple years bout my highest lvl is like 6 or 8, assuming grinding from lvl 1
I mean if you have to convince them you should maybe focus on someone else
at this point if the fourth guy I asked doesn't give a positive reply I'm giving up on getting them to play
won't be fun if I'm forcing 3 people
and I have pretty much 0 experience as a player so I'd be an even lousier DM
I see...
well if you like the game an try to make it fun for everyone, surely it will be good
what do you have in mind, what type of setting?
10+ year DM here - happy to help with ideas...my first ever experience with DnD was DMing, and it was tough,...but I've never looked back! Sure you'd be great!
ah, I think I'll start off with a premade campaign and improvise along the way
if I manage to get my friends to play
Fingers crossed for you!! 😄 What are you looking to run?
Have you seen peril in pine brook it’s a starter adventure (and free) aimed at younger players with simplified character sheets and loads of hints and tips for the DM
I actually have no idea rn, I'll just grab a random campaign maybe, any suggestion?
oh that sounds good, thanks!
You can download and print it off
actually, even if I get them to play, we can't meet up irl so we would still have to play online
Would it still be called DND if it was me and one other?
I'd reccomend Dragons of Stormwreck Isle as a great starting module. It's specifically designed for beginners, so it provides clear guidance and a manageable length of roughly 4-6 sessions (if I remember correctly). It’s a good mix of combat, exploration, and roleplaying, without being too overwhelming for a first-timer.
That's duet play, and while the game isn't designed for it, it can work!
Alright thanks
thanks, I was worried that the lengthy rules would immediately be a red flag for my friends and now I have two starter campaigns to check
100% - and any questions - feel free to message away! 😄
I just submitted as a profile request looking for dm, anyone here having a quick session today/tommorow I could join? 🙂
The rules ask you keep game searching to the proper channels.
i am!
sweet, can I DM u? 🙂
sure!
For folks looking for games, please read #find-a-game carefully to learn how to use our LFG channels.
#looking-for-dm is where you would use the bot commands to create a post telling folks you’re looking for a group.
#looking-for-players is where you’d find posts from DMs looking for players
#looking-for-community is where D&D servers post looking for players and DMs
And #paid-looking-for-game is where to find a paid D&D game
And as folks already noted, please keep your game searching/organizing to the LFG channels or private message.
hey! so i've been trying to find ways to improve my improvisation as a player for months now. the thing is, every video i find on youtube only covers improvising as a dungeon master, which makes sense but that's not what i'm looking for. again, i'm not the dungeon master of my current campaign, so does anyone know any links to videos which actually cover improvising as a player? any posts online, anything?
i know roleplaying in dungeons & dragons is still very different to doing improv in the theatrical sense, i just want some help with getting better at thinking of things to say on the fly as a player.
Here's a start: https://www.dicedragons.co.uk/blogs/tabletop-tips/how-to-improvise-in-dnd#ruffruff-table-of-contents-item-6
And another: https://deathbymage.com/2017/06/13/ask-the-mage-improvisation-tips-and-tricks-for-dms-players/
One thing I can recommend is practice. For instance, think up a scenario, either mundane or far-fetched, and imagine how your character would react to it. Or spend some time writing in your character's voice; if you can tap into what makes them tick, you can improvise more easily at the table, ideally.
awesome!! thank you, i really appreciate it :)
unfortunately i don't usually have much time to practice at the table itself, it's only once per week and the session lasts from 2-4 pm. where we host the campaign, we've really only got so much time
I don't mean practice at the table. I mean practice away from the table, on your own time.
ohh i see! sorry, i understand now. i thought at first you mentioned "talking" in your character's voice so i misinterpreted it. i know that there are these warmup exercises online where it's this list of questions which you answer in character, they're helpful. i've also written one journal entry in character
I read the dmg and more I still don’t know how to do cr for battles i just pray fudge rolls and fudge hp
Those questionnaires can definitely be useful, but the reason I suggest scenarios is because that's the game: your character reacting to events. Answering questions with a specific answer only gets you so far.
Also, no need to ping someone participating in the conversation.
That's more #dm-discussion, but encounter balance is tricky, even if you use CR, which is an imperfect system anyway.
oh, right, my fault. forgot to turn pings off. i'll give the scenarios a shot, thank you
Good luck!
#paid-looking-for-game Hi! I'm not totally sure I'm doing this right but... I have experience playing loads of hours on DnD style video games and watching people play on Youtube but I've never actually played a traditional game. I just spent a lot of time creating my character and I'm ready to play. Is this the best way to find people to play with?
If you're willing to pay for a game, that can be a good way to find one.
Otherwise, you can use the other looking channels, or the guide on iamrazorwing's profile
Yea I'm willing to pay. Do you know of anywhere I can go to do that? Or do I find someone on here somehow?
You linked the channel where they advertise paid games in your first message
You can also look at sites like start playing games or conventions
any advice on how to find a campaign as a young highschooler in a community that isn't exactly weirdo-friendly?
Uhh hello yall.
I can't wait to play as my LARPing character, Shiryu in DnD.
Online is always an option, but if you're looking strictly for in-person games, see if any local venues (game/hobby stores, local libraries, community centers) have D&D sessions. If they don't, ask them if they'd be willing to host something!
im trying to understand a lair action round
basically, the monster has an extra turn in its lair at initiative 20, where it can only do one of the lair actions (and that extra turn doesnt affect reactions or legendary actions)
hello new guy here trien to get started in this i played long long ago in table top hell the books i have are so out dated they probly worth something if not a good laugh

Or 4rounds with 4 players+boss
hey, im new to dnd and dming what is the best way to calculate and to make monsters easier or more difficult
the 2014 Dungeon masters guide has rules on calculating CR and expected damage, defenses etc
Could someone be a dm for me on a one dm and one player campaign so I can learn how the game works?
@lyric fjord I'd be happy to. Will you DM me, and we can talk about details?
I DM’d you
This isn’t the place to organize games #find-a-game is a place to go.
Also allot of us don’t have time to do one on ones we point to the free basic rules and say read chapter 1-2 anything else is for classes you want. Not being mean jsut letting you know
Seen in #learn-to-play
Hiii, I'm like completely new to dnd basically just started watching critical role type new, and I was wondering if it was difficult to find groups on here that were okay with basically newbies ? Or is it like rude to try joining a game if I don't know an insane amount? Sorry if this is awkward lmao I'm not used to this whole thing but it looks insanely fun icl

Well we have #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel to help get you started.
Feel free to ask specific questions as you run across them.
Look for new playerfirnedly games most games tend to fill up fast, but cast a wide net dont jsut do it here. Roll-20 (keep in mind you need ot keep an eye out for Paid games)
what's a beginner dnd that i can manage
There isn't really a beginner D&D. Some classes, like Fighter, are more simple than others and may be better to start with.
I think you should check the pinned information. That would be a better way to start your journey.
Guys I like things other than dnd : )
Hello
How do I level up in dnd beyond
hey is there a place to find dungeon masters?, my friends and i wanna play this sunday over discord but our usual dm is unavailable 😦
Check out #find-a-game . We've got #looking-for-dm channel for just that
If you've leveled up you can do so by going to the class section of the DDB character creator. On there you can add a level to your current class via the drop down menu towards the right hand side, or add a level in a new class if you are able to multiclass
Can I join you
Not the place please use #find-a-game
hey is it ok if i play with different groups in a different campaign if im just trying to find a group i like to play with?
As long as you're transparent about your intentions and you're not ghosting people, seems fine to me. Lots of people are in multiple campaigns.
thanks

I don't get Ability Modifiers
When do I apply them?
How do I know which one I apply?
Is it a modifer that's already present on my character sheet that I apply when I roll?
Or does it depend on the roll?
well for most part, it will tell you what modifier it will to apply.
let's say you have, to do a sword attack. that's where the abiliity modifier comes in. you have extra points to your added dice roll. And that points come from ability modifiers.
Correct
The ability scores themselves aren't used very much except to determine the ability score modifier.
Ability scores are generally not often used as-is and instead determine your modifiers
Then how do I figure out my Ability scores?
10 is 0. every 2 goes up is +1, and 2 downward is -1
so 12 is +1, and so forth. 8 is -1 and so forth.
oh no mb misunderstood. you get your ability scores from either Rolls or Point array/standard
When creating the character there's a couple of different methods to determine ability scores.
Your DM will tell you which method to use.
Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
Ok wait, are these Ability Scores the same as my stats?
Yes.
And if I have let's say 15 intelligence, I would still have just a +2?
yep
Well thanks
Np, man.
the easiest way to learn tbh is to join a game that's allowing new players to join. so you get first hand experience. that's how i learnt it. DND has too much rules that can get confusing.
I am
The thing is, I am trying to play as Constantine
And there's this whole guide about making him as a character, I didn't get any of it, so I asked people in #character-discussion and they told me to read the rules first
Have you asked your dm? usually dm are really great at helping you build your character.
I mean the DM is also pretty new so
oh. which rules are they refering to. dnd rules or discord rules? and can you expand a bit more in constantine. which constantine are you trying to play?
Mainly the one from the comics
Variant Human Warlock
Here's my advice, as a new player do not try to make a character from another IP, especially using a "guide"
Nothing wrong with using Constantine as inspiration, but your first step should be learning the rules and how things work first
I'm not really completely oblivious
Sorry, I just assumed that if you're asking about what ability modifiers are and do, you're at a stage in your D&D journey where trying to make specific IP characters from guides is perhaps beyond your current place
No, tbh I was completely confused due to not knowing Ability Score is a different name for the Stats
My god
Stats is short for game statistics, and refers to everything, not just your ability scores
Yeah no I'm just not gonna reply directly anymore
If that's easier than turning the ping off, you do you
For a player character, the stats are pretty much everything on or referenced by their character sheet. For a monster it's their stat block
Yeah well I meant stats in the RPG sense
That’s essentially the same thing. All your weapons and abilities usually have ”base stats” that get modified depending on your character’s attributes.
If instead of already having an Initiation number, I roll Initiation
Do I still add my Dexterity modifier?
Initiative, whether static or rolled, always includes your dexterity modifier.
I see, thanks
i stepped foot, and immediately got confused because I know nothing about math, and they're are so... so many versions, I have learned a bit though but my only questions are:
what type of dice do i actually need to use,
can i play as a animal/kobold anywhere/in any campaign or does it have to be a specific one?,
what book do I actually buy??
when in a campaign do I have to show my face or can I just... not, do that?
could I make up my charters backstory before joining a campaign or do i just have to wait,
what can i can and cannot do when making my character, like can I make up/add onto a species or is that not allowed??
((sry for the many qestions)
No worries, but I'll answer in bits.
Dice: if playing in person you want a set of polyhedral dice. That includes 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 20 sided. Most sets will also have a ten-sided die marked 10, 20, 30 - you won't need it often for this game.
Playing online, dice are included. Don't worry about that in advance.
Playing as something not in the Free Rules or Players Handbook will be dependent on the game you join. Some DMs are fine with whatever, others will have restrictions. Try to stick to what's in the books starting out.
For backstories, generic is usually best to make an idea. You can add specifics when you get a game with a specific setting. Saying you're a castaway from a spelljammer won't necessarily work in a setting that doesn't include spelljammers, for instance.
Games that want players on camera will say so, that's between you and the DM. It lets you use facial expressions and body language and helps the DM gauge engagement, but it's not for everyone.
Don't buy before you try. The Free Rules will get you enough to play with. See how that goes first. Afterwards, the usual recommendation is the Players Handbook.
Do be aware the physical book and the D&D Beyond content are separate. The book you have and keep and do what you like with. The DDB content is a licence to use their services.
Here are some useful links and further info.

Depends on your class. Wizards get a d6, barbarians get a d12.
I'm a warlock
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Warlock
Warlocks get a d8.
Ah, thanks.
And congratulations on your choice.
tysm I'll try and remember all this, aswell as try out the free rules right now!! again Thank you so much!!
Wait, but the DnD beyond site also says that on level 1, the HP of a Warlock is 8 + Con modifier
Oh shit
My bad, I didn't realize I was reading the amount of HP you get when you level up
Sorry
First level, you get the maximum from the Hit Die. After that you take the average (for a d8, that becomes 5) or roll it. Add your CON mod for each level to find your total.
Sorry, how's the average for a d8 5?
Add the possible results up (1+2+3... totals 36) divide it by the number of numbers (8, becomes 4.5). For hit points, we're rounding up.
Average is 4.5 but the game is nice and rounds up to 5 for your max hp
(Quicker way: as the die has all the numbers between the lowest and highest, add those two together and halve it. D12 becomes 13, divide by two to get 6.5, round it up)
So it's just the mean
Yeah ok makes sense
That's another word for average, yes.
Also how do I figure out how many spell slots I have?
Your class table tells you.
Here's the one for warlock:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#WarlockFeatures
Well that takes me to the link to buy the player's handbook
Well I'll just look it up then
my bad, I updated it to the free link
Thanks
Hi all. I've got a warrior of shadow monk and wondered if there is any way to get D&D beyond to automatically mark off a focus point when I cast Darkness?
#ddb-support might have an idea.
Is Pact Magic a feat? If it is, what are the things I get from it?
It's the warlock's spellcasting feature. Notable points:
- refreshes on a short rest
- spells are cast at a set level based on your warlock class levels
- fewer effective spell slots than most other casters
One of the nice things about DnD is that features do exactly what they say they do, and nothing more. So when you look at Pact Magic in the free Warlock rules, that's all the information you need to know
So Pact Magic is basically what allows me to cast spells in the first place?
That's right
Well, thanks then
What did you mean by the second one?
Unlike every other spellcasting class, all Warlock's spells are cast at the same spell level. That spell level increases as Warlock levels up.
Oh, so basically I have a global spell slot kind of?
Every spell uses the same level spell slot?
Compensation for spending most of your early career with only two bangs between short rests: at least they're big bangs.
Yeah, more or less. For example:
At level 5, a Wizard has four 1st level spell slots, three 2nd level spell slots, and two 3rd level spell slots.
At level 5, a Warlock only has two 3rd level spell slots. (But they come back on a short rest!)
But isn't that a huge downside?
It means that during a single encounter you can cast a lot fewer leveled spells than a Wizard. But unlike a Wizard, if you take a short rest 3 times over the course of an adventure, you can cast Fireball (a third level spell) 6 times! A wizard could never do that.
So it's a bit of an upside and a bit of a downside, dependant on what kind of encounters you face and what opportunities you have to rest.
Invocations are where it's at for warlocks.
So spell slots don't unlock along with your level
(And that's just spells. Mr Smith is right in that a Wizard is reliant amongst exclusively on their leveled spells when it comes to big plays in combat, whereas a Warlock has a lot more options than just casting a big spell!)
Wait shit, that was a really stupid thing to say, mb
Hm
If you don't really mind, could you just help me set up the spells and cantrips or what not? The site is really confusing for some reason and it'll take me a long time before I complete it
We can certainly help here. What are you stuck on?
Ok so, I am a Level 1 Warlock, I have the Warcaster feat
What do I put in my Attacks and Spellcasting box
Idk if the Warcaster thing is relevant or not, I just thought it might be
What am I supposed to put in it and what can I?
Let me just double check something really quick: are you using the outdated 2014 rules? The War Caster feat isn't usually available to level 1 characters with the current rules.
No, I'm not, does Variant Human not give you War-Caster at 1?
Variant human has been updated to just "Human" which gives you a feat from a list of curated options called Origin Feats.
Variant Human's not a thing anymore? Damn
I wouldn't call 2014 rules outdated but if you're playing with 2024 rules variant human is gone yeah
It's not impossible that some DMs will still accept the old Variant Human option, but I wouldn't necessarily count on it
Let me just ask the DM rq
(If you've got a DM already, that's awesome! It'll help a lot with the character building process)
The DM's also pretty new
Yeah, she accepted it
So no problem with keeping Variant Human
Ah, apologies. I'm back and forth at work.
The attacks box is for your easy reference to put weapon or spell attacks that your character has
Spellcasting is where you'd list which spells you have.
Are you using a fillable PDF online? Or DnD Beyond?
So I don't really need it unless I'm using a weapon
The first one
You could put your spells that have attack rolls in there if you want. It's for your own ease of access.
Have you determined your ability scores yet?
I see, speaking of weapons, can I use like a crossbow or something like that at Level 1 or is that something I need to wait for?
Yeah:
Strength - 8
Dex - 14
Constitution - 12
Intelligence - 15
Wisdom - 10
Charisma - 15
For weapons, we're getting into the topic of proficiencies. Any class can use any weapon, but not every class is proficient in every weapon.
Not having proficiency in practical terms means you're losing out on your proficiency bonus when making an attack with that weapon.
Warlocks are proficient in all simple weapons, which does include light crossbows.
You can see the list here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#WeaponsTable
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Warlock
Well, looking again at the Warlock rules, it says that your have proficiency in Simple Weapons.
Well ok, thanks
So how do I enter it into the attacks box?
Do I enter the weapon itself, or the attacks? Is there any difference?
Are there even separate attacks or something like that?
Assuming you're using a basic character sheet, you might write the Weapon's name, the weapon's modifier to-hit, and the weapon's damage
Also I got 2 daggers in my inventory, I can equip one of them too right?
So for example, using your stats it might be:
Light Crossbow
+4 to hit (<- your Dex modifier + Proficiency bonus)
1d6 +2 (<- your Dex modifier) piercing damage
You sure can, yeah
The attack bonus is on the attack roll or the damage roll?
An attack bonus is the chance to hit
Ok so the roll
Yup. So a +4 attack bonus is added to the d20 you roll to determine if you hit an opponent with the crossbow
I'm not sure! Just remember that everything on your character sheet serves a single purpose: to make it easy for you and your DM to know about your character. You can use any section of the character sheet for anything you want, as long as it's useful to one or both of you
Oh, it's the coin pouch
Well ok now what do I add to my Cantrips and Spells, or what can I add
I assume I get 1 1st level spell slot?
There's a table in the warlock section that says how many spells you get.
They're not spells, but they might give you a spell to cast.
Nope!
Some invocations make some spells cantrips
I wouldn't formulate it like that. At will casting is still different from a spell being a "cantrip".
Do I add the Invocations in my Feat or my spell slots or?
These go into your Class Features boxes.
Might just be labeled as feats on your sheet, depending on the sheet
-# that would be confusing and misleading tbh
What about Additional Feats and Traits?
Don't some of them, at least in the 2014 5e say that they also don't use a spell slot like Armor of Shadows, Ascendant Step, and Beast Speech. PHB 2014, pg. 110.
They sure do. But I was just pointing out that just because they don't consume a spell slot to cast doesn't make them cantrips.
So where do I enter Invocations exactly?
Is there a channel to put up monster pictures to give more information on what I need help with
Not specifically. You can upload the image to a reputable sharing site like Imgur, and link to it while explaining what the link is. You may want #dm-discussion or #homebrew, depending on the nature of your question.
You can put them in the Additional box. For things like that, organising it for ease of reference is your choice.
Ok, so I add both the Eldritch Invocation feat thingie and my Eldritch Invocation, Armor of Shadows there
Alright
And how do I cast invocations? Like a cantrip or a spell?
The invocation will say.
Hm, can I use Pact of the Blade at level 1?
Armor of Shadows, for example, lets you cast Mage Armor without a spell slot. You can just do so, following the usual rules for that spell.
Ok
On the crossbow
What does the feature say?
Pact of the Blade
As a Bonus Action, you can conjure a pact weapon in your hand—a Simple or Martial Melee weapon of your choice with which you bond—or create a bond with a magic weapon you touch; you can’t bond with a magic weapon if someone else is attuned to it or another Warlock is bonded with it. Until the bond ends, you have proficiency with the weapon, and you can use it as a Spellcasting Focus.
Whenever you attack with the bonded weapon, you can use your Charisma modifier for the attack and damage rolls instead of using Strength or Dexterity; and you can cause the weapon to deal Necrotic, Psychic, or Radiant damage or its normal damage type.
Your bond with the weapon ends if you use this feature’s Bonus Action again, if the weapon is more than 5 feet away from you for 1 minute or more, or if you die. A conjured weapon disappears when the bond ends.
It doesn't list any specific level, so I assume I can use it at level 1
You don't need to copypaste the rules text. I was essentially asking if you've actually read it.
And yes, you're correct, it does not have a level prerequisite, so you can take it as your 1st level invocation.
Oh ok, thanks
Ok so the Warlock table says I get 2 prepared spells at Level 1 but only 1 spell slot, what does that even mean?
Can you put only the number of spells you can use in the spell slot thing? Or do you put all the spells you have prepared and then you cut down the number everytime you cast a spell?
Spell slots define the amount of spells you can cast. Prepared spells are your options that you can fill those spell slots with.
Your two prepared spells are the leveled spells that you know
Your spell slots are the resources you use to cast them.
So if you have two prepared spells and one 1st level spell slot, you can cast a spell once, and it can be either one of those two spells.
Because you're a Warlock, you regain all your used spell slots when you take a short rest.
So I still add both those spells to the spell levels list
yup
Where can I get a brief description of all the classes to explain to my players?? I know what they are but can't explain them
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
Here are the brief descriptions from the free rules (as well as the full class rules below that)
There is a good summary description in the next chapter:

Thanks for the help
Question, does anyone know if there are any Cheese related Deities in DnD for my cleric to worship?(He's a Mouse 🐁)
I don't believe there are any cheese specific deities, no
Have you asked your DM what deities are in their setting? That would probably help you the most.
Uh the problem is, I basically never played DnD yet. But I chatted with a member of this server and we came to a conclusion, that Maxwell could worship the Earth mother, goddes of life and harvest Chauntea^^
yeah I think Chauntea is about as close as you're going to get.
Ye :P
Just to confirm, you don't have a DM yet? And you hope to play a character who is an actual mouse?
Humanoid Mouse
Weremouse?
Just so you're aware, there isn't an official weremouse or humanoid/anthro mouse species published yet. It's usually recommended for new players to stick with the official species, rather than try and homebrew something.
You can see the design in arts and crafts, shouldn't be much of a scroll
Oh alright
Yet there are 3red party books like Humblewood though not official stuff it depends on dm
Still a good idea to learn things starting with core materials then add in 3rd party and homebrew later IMO
do i just use the channels to find a group?
See #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels
Yeah
Is there such thing as a assassin role like under the role of a rogue
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "role", but Rogue has an Assassin subclass.
I just wanted to be a bounty hunter but kills like an assassin that goes close range instead of long range
Fighters can do that well too, as can rangers. Rogues have the advantage of the sneak attack feature to boost their damage on an attack.
I thought going a rogue was a good idea
Ngl I'm so clueless when it comes to dnd I ligit done like 20 mins of a campaign
melee rogue works well enough, though a dual wielding dex fighter can do pretty good damage too
Ye what about the sub class of rogue which fits my description however the assassin is long range for some reason
Nothing about the assassin subclass benefits long range more than short range.
Yeah well would I be able to be a bounty hunter on top of that
sure, pick the suitable skills you think a bounty hunter should have, the rest is roleplay
What do you mean?
I was on an app earlier and it gave me traits ill screen shot it
Can i cast, as a ritual, a Wizard Spell who is in my Spellbook, but i didn't prepare that day?
Yes following the ritual spellcasting rules (and if the spell can be cast as a ritual)
Wizards can, yes, thanks to the Ritual Adept class feature. If you're not a Wizard, you would need the Ritual Caster feat.
Yes, i will playing a Divination Wizard for first time
LEVEL l : RITUAL ADEPT
You can cast any spell as a Ritual if that spell has the Ritual tag and the spell is in your spellbook. You needn't have the spell prepared, but you must read from the book to cast a spell in this way.
Assassin only works on creatures who haven’t token a turn yet
The Surprising Strikes portion of the Assassinate feature, yes, works on the first round of each combat, giving you advantage on attack rolls against any creature who hasn't taken a turn yet.
Hello, I am new to dnd I have played one or two one shots and I am now siddenly a dm for my friend group. Ive done some basic resharch but not too much and nothing extensive. We would like to run oyr campaigns online through discord and I was wondering if theres any software or websites that are highly reccomended for online sessions, I am most particularly lookin to make use of dnd beyond as I enjoy the UI and ease of use, my most pressing need is a map display for the players and myself
We are running a 5e campaign that started as a one shot and is now leading into another session, we choose to start with thw "Quests from the Infinite Staircase" book which concept wise is nice since it allows for a lot of creativity and expansion later on
might take a look into D&D Beyonds MAPS feature, if you have a subscription
unfortunately I dont, I am trying to limit costs as I am a collage student
Try Owlbear.rodeo then and the free tier of DnDbeyond for character sheets could work.
Roll20 with the beyond20 extension
Or owlbear rodeo
right, then owlbear or roll20
awesome, I will check those out thank you so much
Good news everyone! My lgs finally got a new group together so session zero is next saturday at 3pm 😄
Hello there guys. I'm a new DM who's gonna host a DnD Beyond session for my 3 friends. For our first adventure I have chosen the Frozen Sick story. It seems like a blast. However I am a bit confused about something. The story itself is fine but how exactly will I be able to present it to my players in the best way possible. What I mean by this is should I buy the "Explorer's Guide to Wildemount". The reason why I'm asking this is because in the description of it it says I get maps, monster, spells, species...if I don't end up buying this how will it work? Can I make the monsters myself?
Whether to buy a book or not is really up to you. I will say that if you're just starting out, you can play D&D just fine with the free rules. You might want to do that first before buying anything.
Free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Awesome. So I won't be missing out if I don't have the book?
The adventure should have everything you need to run it.
Everything in the adventure that's not in the adventure book should be in the free rules.
Hey l am new here l always wanted to play dnd so l was gonna ask if anyone is willing to play it online somehow and teach me how to play it. It's ok if l need to read a rule book first or something like that l just really want to play it
Welcome! There’s a link to the Free Rules a few messages up. Plenty of other helpful starter info in #learn-to-play.
I would love to play as well, but on D&D beyond I don't want to be a DM yet, I just don't have anyone to be a DM for me to play.
Where do I find groups for people that want to start campaigns?
Roll-20 allows you to simple drag maps and has the Free basic rules, The Standard resourse documents (including monsters) included and its free to join and host games if you dont mind it being basic
Check out #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels
thank you:D
Hey! I just got the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle Starter Set and im going through the rules now.
On the pre-made character sheets, there are values on all of the skills, even though the characters are only proficient in a few skills. Why is that?
Also I understand that weapon proficiency grants the proficiency bonus for the attack roll, but does it also apply the bonus for the damage roll?
Ill try to break it down for you:
The Skills are from the characters background which gives them a choices in Proficent skills they have
Attack rolls are D20 +Modifyer+Profincancy bonus
Damage is D(insert dice here)+Modifer that is requiser to use weapon
SO For example A shortsword is Versitile so you can use your Streng mod or Dex mod depending on the class
Longsword: Strength
Dagger: Dex
So, if i understand correctly, when you make your own character sheet, all the skills have values, and you get to pick the ones you're proficient in?
Yes regardless of What you pick they are always tied to your Ability Mods.
When you pick a skill you want proficancy in you add your Prof Bonus to that skill.
Lets say Persuasion for example I have a +3 mod regardless if Im proficent in it or not. It will always be a +3 How ever If I wish to become Proficent in persuasion I add my bonus so instead its +5 (3+2) for example
Ooooohhhh. It just clicked. You're the man! Thanks!
You can use any skill regardless of Proficancy, Think of your skill pro as a way to roll better (hopefully)
As a current player, what can I do to get into DMing?
At the moment I'm just getting into 3dprinting maps and minis
There are several ways, It does help to have the Dungeon masters guide and the Monster manual.
For first time Dms: The starter sets are the way to go or to pick up and play the following:
-Frozen Sick
-Dragons of stormwreak island
-Lost mines of Phandelver
-Tales from the yawning portal (Sunless Citidel and forge of fury)
-Dragons of Icespire peak
?tag Dm
No tag Dm found.

@wild wasp I can tell you that the Dragons of stormwreck isle set comes with a 30 page rule book and a 50 page campaign book. This is my first time participating in any kind of D&D and it's working for me so far. I got it for around $14 at walmart
I mainly play online, So I got most of my stuff online.
ANother fun online one if you want to try your hand at a sandbox oneshot. Massicure at Clearwater lake is a good one and its free on roll-20
It looks like I can get most of the main books for $340
Digitally and Physically
Oh, do I get 2014 content or just start on the 2024 rules then?
I do in-person, should I get the digital & physical bundle then?
Up to you honestly, and as far as Ruleset also upto you
ANd if you are planing to share books physical def lol
To really get started all you need is:
The players hand Book
The Dungeon masters guide
Monster manuel
Optional: An pre written adventure
also imagination
Yeah, these altogether are either $90 for digital, $150 for Physical or $180 for both
I feel like this could be a public library type of thing too. Maybe look into it before spending all that money?
yeah I don’t recommend spending hundreds on books before you really know if you’re gonna be getting mileage out of them. Honestly I feel like with the free basic rules (which includes some monsters iirc?) if you already know how to play as a player, you can throw together enough to at least get a feel for if you enjoy dming
Or get dragons of storm wreck isle/lost mines of phandelver or one of the free basic ones like frozen sick or peril in pinebrook, they’ll have everything you need to run them and you can dip in your toes
How often are the specials? I at least want to get my own PHB copy.
You also have the standard resource documents that can pride more free stuff
How do I get in to a group and do we have to talk
Majority of games will require you to talk but you can search for play by post games that are txt based
I'm sure most DM's would be fine with just letting you type. You can find a group through the #looking-for-dm or #looking-for-players channels, but read #find-a-game if you plan on making a post
Ok
Actually I am not sure if I can agree. Having a player type instead of talk is very uncommon. Now there are games where you're meant to type instead of talk.
I recommend checking the pinned information.
Huh, I spend a lot of my time in a space that caters towards neurodivergent people, so maybe I expect people to be more understanding of stuff like that than they actually are
@lyric fjord ok thanks for all the help
Understandably it's not as viable to type while everyone else is talking. This would make game move slower. It might also negatively affect the game's vibes as this could be something that the other players didn't sign up for. Assuming this is a scenario where the DM didn't communicate this play style being a possibility.
This is coming from a fellow neurodivergent person.
It's less people not being understanding and more, as Alley put it, a practicality issue for the dynamics of play
You can also look for "play by post" (PBP) games which will be everyone typing
Personally I love play by post games and even those move slowly. Probably 10 times slower than what we were talking about.

Hi can I ask some questions here?
That's what the channel's for!
I created a new character in DnD beyond app and I accidentally pressed join a campaign and input my link in the campaign option. And i was locked into a Campaign as a DM but I can't delete the campaign, My characters are in it and I can't choose other characters
More for #ddb-support but if you are trying to do this through the app you cants manage campaigns there you need to be on the webpage to delete the campaign
I have a very poor selection of friends sigh...
after finally convincing all of them to do a beginner campaign
one of them is complaining about the measly 4 pages of rules
like that guy has read stupid gay romance stuff
and then said "the gay stuff made me uncomfortable"
Have yall had a session 0 to talk about what you want to include/not include in the game?
4 pages of rules are you sure it’s dnd you are playing
well they kinda have 0 idea what DnD is
Cuz it’s totally fair for a player to realize a game’s theme isn’t for them.
perils in pinebrook so it's short
no, the thing is he probably would like it after playing, or maybe just quit after saying it's cringe
but he's like "are you guys gonna read that fr?"
... there's actually just 3 pages of rules and 1 reference page
ugh
if he read it and said he's not interested then it's still fair
Your friends don't owe you their time for something they're not engaged with, regardless of how much or little effort they put into engaging with it
It's easier to make friends from a D&D group than make a D&D group from your friends
I dunno, he spends his time bingeing gore movies and idk I just think he should at least read the rules before saying no
Please don't ping me, even in replies
What they spend time on has no bearing on this
It's worse that the guy I know less just agreed instantly
and I know his schedule is tighter
This doesn't sound like a D&D thing, this sounds like "my friends aren't doing what I want them to" thing
yea well he could've been polite about it
Nothing about what you quoted sounds rude or even impolite
Again, doesn't seem like a D&D issue
¯_(ツ)_/¯
if theyre not gonna take the time to read it, they wouldnt be good players anyway
yep I decided it's not worth it asking him after that
and get this, he has asked me to read books HE likes earlier and I did, but he's never read my recommendations and now I ask him to make like an hour of time while the vacations are going on to try this out but the answer is no
i mean nobody can force anybody to like anything
plus he backed out too, he had already said earlier that if the other 3 agreed he'd play too
sure its a lil rude but other than that...
yea I'm not forcing him I'm just ranting here
Buddy, I've been trying to hint at this, but I'm gonna be direct
This is the channel for helping newcomers for D&D
This isn't the channel for getting interpersonal advice for friendships or ranting/venting
You probs want #non-dnd-topics

hello! I'm totally new to DnD and I really want to learn to play it, online in roll20 cz that's, as i heard, the best place to play DnD with friends, I'm eager for anyone that can teach me how to play it online

Ah, I apologize. This server is just for DnD 5e. It's considered off-topic to discuss other tabletop games in most channels. Maybe the folks in #non-dnd-topics will be interested?
Oh ok 👍 thank you 🙏
Hello new to all of this. Created two characters recently for the first time. Looking to learn and play.

Hey! My friends and I are all starting fresh, and I got voted to DM. We're gonna do the Dragons of Stormwrek Isle Campaign. Unfortunately we're gonna have to do it online. Is there a website that where we could all see the map? Is there a way to get specifically the Dragons of stormwreck map?
Do you have a physical copy of the adventure or a digital one?
Physical, I bought the starter set
Platforms like Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo can be used for free to upload maps and tokens. You can find community-made maps for the module on Reddit and elsewhere with a quick Google!

hello vros …
Do you think mage is good for new players
If you're starting at level 1, most classes can be grocked with some reading. Though spellcasters are a bit harder than their martial counterparts.
That being said, mage isn't a class. You might be referring to wizards or sorcerers, two distinct classes.
Sorcerer is one of the more complex classes in DnD, but if you don't mind chewing on some crunch you can play a Sorcerer just fine
Is anyone starting a new campaign soon? I have set up my character, and I want to play for the first time.
Head to #find-a-game for directions on using the server's Looking for Game/Group channels.
i have too many character ideas.
i’m trying to figure out how to make characters but for my new character i’m hoping to add some kind of ability like minatos (naruto) Flying Thunder God jutsu, a little nerdy but i like the idea of the ability and was wondering if i’m able to do that for a character if possible?
Seeing as I have already answered this question on another channel I will just direct you to this channel's pinned information.
Welcome to DnD. Adding a new character to your list of 50 DnD characters that you have never played is just another Wednesday for us.
Hi, i am very new to D&D (never played), i have a group of excited players looking to play together in real life, and i intend to DM, but i need to play first and get a feel for things if i am ever to DM!
So i need some people to help me find my way as a player first!

Hi all, I'm just finishing my first short campaign as a player and i have so many character ideas
We have a channel just for discussing characters! ( #character-discussion )
Hi besties, back from a super long hiatus from D&D and basically forgot everything, so I’d be super appreciative if I could join a campaign to rejog my memory

am i being excessive by writing down multiple character ideas incase one doesnt fit the campaign setting
i really need to work on my handwriting
I think that's a really good idea honestly. It's just being prepared. Character doesn't fit a campaign? Just use the one that does
currently just jotting down ideas tbh, not to backstory or anything yet
using the notebook my lgs gave out to the people who were there for one of the oneshots
Talking to a DM to put together a backstory is also a really good idea. They can make it slot more easily into their campaign that way
Id try to get into contact with the dm for a few things but the only line of contact I have with him is via the lgs's facebook and thatd have to wait til tomorrow
I know his stance on multiclassing already so im trying to keep ideas to monoclass or at most a singular multiclass
Last game I played in, I rolled a whole 4-person party — Wizard, Cleric, Barbarian, and Bard — just to have options in case someone else didn't want to fill a spot.
Others became NPCs in my other games. #NoWastedEffort
also getting together mutliple ideas ofc since idk how well im gonna roll stats wise
I plan to make one character per class at least. Treating it as a fun writing exercise. And allows for a catalogue to choose from when getting ready for a campaign and Oneshot
i don't want to commit another b o u b
Couldnt think of a name for a oneshot and it ended up as boub the glory paladin with 7 int
i still find it funny that one of my stats was a 7
I love coming up with names. My favorite one I came up with is Needle (short for Needolindr) for my Tabaxi Rogue. Names are so fun to figure out
(...absolute shill...) When we roll for my games, I love Avrae's randchar function. Especially when my rule is "roll twice, or until you get over 75."
I've seen someone roll 12 times in a row. That 12th one was a 91 total though, so they stopped complaining quickly.
because of the 7 int i decided to try the most ridiculous plans i could think of, he wasn't the sharpest crayon in the knife drawer. somehow it worked out
I like pointbuy a lot. Fallout style
one combat encounter just consisted of me throwing enemies at eachother because it was just working that well
the combat encounter in question was in a oneshot of the onshot that we didnt finish because people had to leave, was a level 0 session and i was unarmed for most of it
Does anyone else just take previous existing characters and use them as templates?
id try that but my previously existing character library currently consists of boub and only boub
or did you mean from other sources
Other sources. Like was Boub inspired by anything?
thinking of like 60 different things at once rn because too many idea
not really, I just wanted a simple character for the session, was gonna do a eldritch knight fighter but we had 2 other fighters so i went something similar but different
didn't even get to use a single smite 😦
we didn't get to the bigger encounter towards the end of the oneshot and i didnt wanna smite enemies that i was killing in 1 regular atack
our party was a little higher power wise than the dm thought itd be
i might go to the store to get desert and something to eat than think of more ideas
Can someone explain to me or refer me to a part of an official books about how different types of terrain would effect battles?? I know how would it effect a real battle but how can it effect a turn based combat??
Difficult terrain reduces your speed - e.g. you have to spend 10 feet of movement to move 5 feet (or basiclaly you have to spend 1 extra foot for every foot moved). See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#DifficultTerrain
Are the D&D adventure system board games any good?
Never played one but folks in #merch-and-dice may have more info about them.
You'll probably get better "how does it work as a game" discussion/feedback on a dedicated board games server.
This server tends to be more focussed on the TTRPG game
I’m not even going to lie I’m completely lost I told my friend I wanted to try dnd and he said join here and idk what I’m doing now fr
just contacted the dm to ask a few questions to hopefully narrow down my character idea
Check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages for useful info/resources to help get you started. Feel free to ask any specific questions.
just got me a Tan Bag of tricks for a curse of strahd campaign 😭
hello ;-;
@drifting basin is this your first D&D campaign you will be playing?
Technically not my first, but the first one I’ve ever started from the beginning
The last one I did had me join in mid way through their campaign
Has your game started yet?
We have, just beat the first dungeon
first dungeon in Curse of Strahd???
Yeah, the house thing?
Deadly baby and all that
AAAAH! I love the Death House LOL
You mean the dhurst mannor
One does not call it the Death house 😉
What do each of the Dice do?
Thats talked about in chaper 1 my man
Yep, as we were running for our lives down the stairs, we looked up to see the flesh mound of hell fall from the top floor all the way to the bottom
And I barely scraped by a opportunity attack with my 19 AC
But to sumerize
D20 : used for skill checks, Attack rolls
D4,6,8,10 Damage
oh alright
oh yes @drifting basin. Your DM is playing CoS in the same manner as I am running my CoS campaign.
He wanted at least one of us dead 😭 we nearly died like 7 different times
Oh you didnt find the shortcut didnt oyu.
Uhhhh what?
They usually don't @short marsh
Your Dm wanted a player to die?
I never want my players to die. Their actions bring about their deaths or near-deaths.
Nope- we ran the way we walked in
Our cleric punched through a wall to get to the stairs quicker though
Rats spewed out but other than that everything was fine
@drifting basin you will have many fun encounters ahead
Anyways lets try to keep it to rules explanations and not talk about games here...That may be a tales form the table thing
I got a bag of tricks and my first creature companion is Terry the Baboon. I’m happy for now lmao
I am currently memorising things to know ;-;
@short marsh I DM'ed you about Curse of Strahd
Just know somthing: Dms shouldnt want players to die. That sounds as if they are treating this as a game to win not a Co-op story telling game.
Ive dmed it my self befor droping it after some messes
#learn-to-play Start with the free basic rules
do yall wanna see my chaotic notes im taking as prep for my first campaign
Thats every dm ever lol
@worn blade come up with one idea for your character and run with it. You can make the sessions more interesting if you hone into one idea.
lots of it was just vague ideas, currently writing down a more solid idea though idk if the DM will let me run it yet since he hasn't responded
What is your idea?
Fighter/Rogue multiclass, I sorta know his stance on multiclassing just waiting on approval
Champion/assassin specifically, criminal background, still working on a few specifics but its coming together
Im not much of a fan of multiclassing as it can reduce the effectiveness of the character
It's a pretty simple character concept overall and should be effective enough
Champion or Assassin are great as solo classes. Just depends if you want to be "death in the shadows" or brute force.
I could also go Champion/Swashbuckler though I think ill go assassin
By going for both you lose at least 3 levels of advancement for one of the classes.
That is why I am not a fan of multiclassing (especially for subclasses)
3/17 I just miss out on a boon, stroke of luck, elusive, and 1d6 sneak attack damage
and in return i get more crits
and that IF your campaign gets to level 20.
im fine with that
Well, hopefully your DM is OK with that.
it basically comes online at level 4 just gets stronger over time and with gear so im gonna have a fun time no matter what
My current campaign party is comprised of a Fighter (Champion), Cleric (Life), Rogue (Assassin) and Wizard (Illusionist) at level 4.
Im the DM
nice
This will be my first time playing in a campaign, and third actual session ive done
and I am giving my Rogue a homebrew weapon (Hidden Blade cough cough Assassin's Creed)
Simple character with a simple concept, if I die i can always build a new character with a different concept
When I was playing in a high level campaign, my Level 20 Ranger (Gloom Stalker) died.
im too potato brained to do math right now but with advantage I should have about a 19% chance for a crit, 27% or so i think once i get elven accuracy
still not a great chance but you play your character how you want.
big numbers are funny so if it happens it happens
that and if it goes to level 20, sneak attack crit + death strike would be a funny number
As a DM, I have a love/hate relationship with crits
check #looking-for-players
that would be what, like 9d6+2+dex 2x dice for crit so 18d6 than the damage doubled for death strike if that also goes through
Exactly my love/hate relationship right there.
dw even if its not a crit death strike can go through ❤️
im pretty sure theres a funnier setup I could do also but i sorta know how my dm does multiclassing and i know he wouldnt allow it lol
the dm allows homebrew so i might look into some
Hey everyone I’m brand new to actually trying to play dnd I’m kinda scared I’m trying to find a campaign because I don’t really know how to play so is there like anything I should do to hopefully prepare myself enough on what to know and what to do when joining a campaign for the first time
Have you read the free rules?
Actively reading them at the moment
That's a good place to begin.
Some groups will also signpost that they're open to beginners, so I'd look out for those in particular.
So should i try to find some one shots or actual campaigns to play
I think watching some actual play shows can help set some expectations, but participating in a one shot and trying it out, being open to feedback and new experiences is invaluable.
Hello, me and my friends are going to have our very first D&D Session next weekend and I've been assigned as the DM. None of us ever played D&D before. What should I know first?
Have you tried any other role-playing games?
Just to establish a baseline here.
Not really. Just Undertale tbh.
Then I recommend Peril in Pinebrook to get started.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
Alternatively, you can check out the Free Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules).
To be clear, Peril in Pinebrook is basically a pre-made campaign made mostly to introduce new players to D&D?
Exactly. Get your feet wet with a premade scenario and a lighter version of the rules, see how the game works.
Alright then. I'll use it as our first campaign, thanks mate!
I haven't played in a very long time and thought about getting into it again. What's the best resource for learning say Sorcerer. Looking for spells, race suggestions ect. I've tried Google but there's so many results.
As a casual I would prefer simple. Thanks in advance.
The D&D Free Rules would be the best place

Welcome! If you're looking to get started with DnD, the best place is by reading the free rules linked above.
in there you should have all the basic resources to learn
There are also some useful videos linked above as well
Welcome newbros!
For players I usually say "if you could be anything/have any kind of character what would you want?"
and then figure out how to use the rules to make that idea work.
How do u play as DM?
wdym?
you make up stories and situations for your players to engage with.
Since the DM is like the creator of the campaign how do you actually do ur role as a DM?
is it DM vs players or is it ur job to keep ur team alive
oh, it kinda depends. do u wanna make the whole world yourself or use like
an already existing setting
Probably the whole world myself
okay i know for 100% that it isnt you against players, it depends though
i mean, dont try to kill them. maybe make it easier or harder depending on what ur players want. its never u trying to kill them though
Time to have some venison steaks for breakfast than think more about this character concept
The DM plays the rest of the world. Sometimes that means you're playing people who want to help and sometimes that means you're playing people that want to hurt the party.
But you as the DM shouldn't be against the players
but as for actually starting, just try to work on some lore and maybe a map for your world
dont overwhelm yourself, prepare a session 0
Hey am taylor so I'm not new to campaigns am new to being dungeon master ..any advice?
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Some basic advice and resources above! If you're looking for something more in depth, we have #dm-discussion to discuss the more nuanced topics and questions associated with being a DM.
hey guys, im new to dnd and im just looking for a team that i might play dnd with on discord using roll20 or whataver, or i can just be a spectator to see how things goes, DM me if u wanna invite me

bet
Free Rules above, but I've already linked him to the basic DM resources
i didnt plan on using 2 handed weapons, dual wielding, or a shield anyway
I still dont understand much
much obliged
I'd recommend rescheduling
ok
because Im used to doing less reading more pressing buttons online, but I enjoy character building
it's been a challenge to my gen z brian
omg brian
lmao
I've been like
watching videos about like character building, rolls, skills, backgrounds and allat
and I made a sheet but I'm not sure if it's done
or even right
just checked the weather and the high for saturday is 78, great weather for session0
stats are rolled, might have to reroll them when i get there but oh well i felt like rolling math rocks
ITS SO AWESOME
i did smth like that one time, except she had tied a shield to where her hand wouldve been
I once had a character back in 1994 that was a Wood Giant species who had Psychic abilities. He was really good with a Longbow that was of Giant Size and shot arrows that were as large as Javelins. One of his psychic abilities was to change his size as a Bonus Action. In combat he was able to shrink down to 1.5" in height. With a thought he was able to snap to full size, shoot the arrow, and snap back. During the adventure he was able to shrink, tie a string around his waist, hold on to an arrow shot by another member of the party over a river. Once on the other side he was able to untie the string, go to full size, pull the rope across and tie it off so that the party could cross the river. Great for alternative means of getting into someplace past guards.
im just keeping it simple tbh, already have the character figured out
High elf, born with one arm, Fights with a Rapier, criminal background, and for classes a Fighter/Rogue multiclass. Still working on backstory but I've got til saturday 3pm before session 0 starts
gonna get some juicy sneak attack crits hopefully
if it goes to level 20 itl be 3 levels champion fighter, 17 levels assassin rogue, on crit thats a lot of dice and with the level 17 assassin feature the damage can get doubled
i actually havent played rogue before. for my next char im debatjng between rogue, monk, or warlock
my whole table thinks warlock is awesomd but
oughh no spell slots...
How well it will work, we will see, using the 2024 ruleset so i should be fine
Alert from criminal background plus assassin giving advantage
if i get to keep the stats I rolled now, plus background bonus, id have d20+5+proficiency with advantage for initiative
when i get to assassin
Don’t forget sneak attack as well
that was just initiative ofc im not forgetting sneak attack
And canceled 😦
If I had a nickle for every canceled session, I would have several
At least this time it was canceled for a good reason
I just want a successful session ngl. It's been 3 months now
How do i send a message in the looking for dm channel
If you want to set up a game, you need to send a command in the #find-a-game channel. The post there explains which one.
This is how you become a forever DM.
And then after luring them in, you probably get to play one one shot every 4 months when one of your players wants to try it, it's a long term investment strategy or something....
im this close to throwing the 10$ table fee at another dm just to get a campaign that actually STARTS
i been trien for 2 weeks to get in a game here an learn how to play this an work my way up to dm since i am retired an nothing but time on my hands an so far all i have received is go to this web site or that 1 one every one is just passing the buck if any one woulod be willing to teach some one pls feel free to gimme a kick an a old army sgt will listen
I recommend checking the pinned information on this channel if you want to learn about the basics.
Just be aware that finding a reliable DnD group that you get along with is a big challenge that every DnD player has to face. You likely won't find your perfect group in a few weeks. This could be something that takes several months at worst. It's all worth it though.
Allot of games and dms prefer for you to know chapters 1 and 2 of the free basic rules
Where can I join a match?
We have #find-a-game for if you're looking to join a game group
I’m a fairly new dm and I’m looking to run a one shot for a few of my friends that have never played before. What are some good one shots I can run for them?
Um....D&D isnt a videogame, if you wish to join a session yes but these games can last for a long time.
Depends on how long you got:
Sunless citidel can take 6-8 hours
Massicure at clearwater lake is a fun one (can be shortened easly free on roll 20)
is session the right word? if so where can I join
Just keep in mind you join a campang your in it for the long haul otherwise you might wanna look for oneshots. This is not a jump in and play instantly kinda game. TTRPGS arnt like that
My D&D knowledge is limited to YT shorts from Legends of Avantris and other stuff on YouTube. Where should I start if I want to try getting into D&D myself? None of my friends are interested in trying it with me
Check out #learn-to-play it has some helpfull links and there are more in the pins of this channel :)
I don't know if this is the best place to ask, but I'm looking for a pbp server called Eltoroth. I lost my account that I used to play on that server but also want to go back and play on thag server again. I tried looking for it on different server ad sites but can't find it. Anyone heard of it?
Have you tried disboard?
So... I'm not new D&D. Just haven't played it in a long time only played 5e one time. I am mostly knowing of the setting around the City of Neverwinter. Grew up in the Neverwinter Nights era.

Good day
New to DnD, in the character sheet under Attacks & Spellcasting, where can I find the Atk bonus? And what do I do if I have a versatile weapons for damage/type?
Attack bonus would be your strength or dexterity modifier (depending on the weapon) and for versatile weapons people generally put something like "1d8/1d10 + 4"
thanks!

good afternoon great people. How is everybody
I’m new and finding a campaign is the hardest thing ever
I am about to start my first campaign with a bunch of friends! I am playing as a colorblind Druid. Does anyone have any tips for first time players?
obviously understanding the basic rules is pretty nice to keep the game going, but honestly just put urself out there, ive witnessed a lot of new players being too scared to engage either in RP with npcs or pcs.
i forgot to reply, but yeah see text above.
2024 or 2014 rules? If the latter, clear your list of wildshapes with the DM before you start.
You don't have to do a character's voice if you don't want to, but do think about describing how your character talks.
Ask the other characters questions! What they think about a situation, how they feel, have they ever seen anything like this before?
agree
I'm in pain
and to make it worse I asked friends if they wanted to play since I wanted to like start and they answered "are we in stranger things"
that hurt me deeply
Does Intelligence affect how I should RP, or does that depend on the party?
For example; if I keep Int at 8, would I have to dumb down decision-making/speech?
While there are some DMs who I'm sure are very insistent on intelligence mattering for RP, I don't think that's the standard.
Nothing about the intelligence ability score actually says you have to act in a certain way
Thanks! My DM wasn't sure either, we're all very new. I'll keep it low then.
new guy looking for some one to guide me thru the start proccess in getting into a game pls
You don’t play your stats
#learn-to-play has a link to the free rules chapter 1 and 2 explains everything
Your stats only affect your skills int is used mainly to recall information. You don’t have to play a dumb character if you don’t want. Just they have trouble recalling information
Alr so I know nothing abt this rp

dyno thank you for posting this you keep doing it an that dont help me at all i click a link an no clue where or what i am doing an takes a week to get back to here
Dyno is a bot. The links should lead you to useful posts, websites and videos.
It’s a bit that gives you resources d&d is not a 1 on 1 teachable game there are people we don’t after have time to do so between life, work and playing/running games
Know what you are going to do before it is your turn. Don't waste everyone's time while you read your spell list and what they do. Know what the spells do. Have fun.
Heart to heart?
Hmm?
