If you're using a digital character sheet like on D&D Beyond, that'll do the heavy lifting for you as well.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
Alright so I've done the stats
Whatcha got?
Strength 11. Dexterity 11. Constitution 11. Intelligence 12. Wisdom 15. Charisma 13
I don't know if that's like normal?
Oh great. What are saving throws? Also I used the point calculator he gave Me
Are you asking what they are, or how to calculate them?
What are they and how to calculate them
I mentioned using a point buy calculator, which they did.
So the math is definitely correct.
A saving throw—also called a save—represents an attempt to evade or resist a threat, such as a fiery explosion, a blast of poisonous gas, or a spell trying to invade your mind. You don’t normally choose to make a save; you must make one because your character or a monster (if you’re the DM) is at risk. A save’s result is detailed in the effect that caused it.
If you don’t want to resist the effect, you can choose to fail the save without rolling.
Again, check out the Handbooker Helper tutorial series, which goes through all the fundamentals of the game.
Saving throws: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVEX4J2Sh4A
Those stats will make for a cleric focused more on development of the mind. They’ll have strong spells, good social skills, and decent knowledge of the world. They’ll probably want to try and avoid getting in a melee fight with anyone.
Alright. So saving rolls are just to literally save yourself
How would one calculate those. Sorry for being a nuisance but I'm just really dumb
Each class has different proficiencies for saving throws.
Again, I highly recommend you read or watch the tutorial videos at your own pace instead of asking quick questions that can be answered if you just took the time to read.
D&D is a game of rules and you cannot avoid reading rules.
I don't think you quite understand my situation but yk what it's fine it's clear you wont help
Doesn't matter your situation. You will need to read the rules eventually. I've also linked the tutorial videos if you are unwilling to read.
Bucked, I promise you that you are not being treated differently than anybody else - especially in this channel. (On days when I've got bandwidth, I've been known to step-by-step people through a character in public chat, but that depends entirely on the time of (my) day and my available bandwidth - which right now are late and low.
We have no problem if you come back after reading the rules / watching the tutorials then ask us to clarify something you don't understand.
Saving throws are one of the 3 types of D20 Tests. All D20 Tests follow the same basic formula:
- Determine what ability score is associated with that D20 Test
- Roll a d20
- Add the relevant ability score modifier
- If you are proficient in that type of d20 test, you also add your proficiency bonus
So for example, if you have to make a dexterity saving throw, you would roll a d20, then add your dexterity modifier. If you are playing as a class that is proficient in dexterity saving throws, then you also add your proficiency bonus. If the sum of all that is equal to or above the DC of that saving throw, you succeed. If it is below the DC, you fail.
Ah, they seem to have left the server
~~Dam rip ~~
Please forgive me, this is not the exact message I wish to show for new members.
If there are any questions, don't be afraid to ask.
If you have any problem with me, please either directly message me, or mention this message further down.
I wasn't trying to be a jerk but rather trying to get them to learn how to read the rules.
Nah everyone gotta learn, even now I doubt myself.
Tho I joined either after or in the middle of all that
So, like Warlocks can't use alot of spells right? How are they useful beyond spamming Eldritch blast?
I assume they work beyond the Meme and existence of Wyll
In the broadest terms, they're unique among the other spellcasters because they get their spell slots back on a short rest and can customize their kit quite extensively using invocations. They are very useful in whatever they choose to make themselves useful in.
Can someone explain the stats and slots of spells and stuff like defence modifiers and things that are necessary to be a DM or just understand it in general?
The first chapter in the free rules explains these concepts better than I could:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game
But you're always welcome to ask for clarification or pointers of course.
So what would like, a 1d4 be?
Still a bit confused on the dice system with the numbers after it and stuff
That's a four-sided die. Here's an image of the typical dice in order.
So is that 1 roll of a 4 sided die?
Yep
You got it
Can Fighters use Cantrips? Not Eldritch Knight subclass..
I can opt to get a cantrip from High Half-Elf species.
Yep, as long as you can get a cantrip from somewhere, you can use it!
Fighters don't have spells (outside of sub-class, magic initiate feat, or racial abilities).
How do I host a campaign in dnd beyond, and what’s the Hit/dc thing?
So, I'm not fully understanding the utility in gameplay
Like... in my head as a person who plays RPGs and JRPGs. The Spellcaster when not casting spells is... a potato
hit is your chance to land an attack, say you have 16 strength and a proficiency bonus of 2 then you would have +5 to hit. if an enemy had an ac of 15 then you would need to roll a 10 or higher for your attack to land.
saving throws are essentially the reverse of attacks, you force the enemy to make a roll to avoid getting hit
That's why I brought up short rests. They're fairly easy to come by, at least in comparison to long rests. In addition, most invocations let the warlock either do spellcasting-like things or outright let them cast some spells without slots.
Invocations?
It's probably a good idea to give the class a read.
The entire spellslot system kinda irks me as well as components
I'm reading it, I assume the 2024 rules are best
Either is fine. Invocations in both versions are sort of like feats that only warlocks get.
I dont know how to play D&D I'm a veteran of White Wolf and Fate games
I am also... perturbed by why a Warlock doesnt know their patron until they reach level 3
It seems very odd to me that you'd be given ancient powers beyond the scope of man but not know where they're coming from
Howdy
Mechanically they don't, but don't let that stop you from working together with your DM to work towards it or hint at the choice you're going to make in advance.
It isnt just me right? That's a weird story element to delay?
It's only weird if you see the mechanics as "allowing" you to tell any story, which isn't true.
So, I'm reading the Warlock page here https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/2190885-warlock#WarlockSubclasses Which I assume is the official page. And it still kinda feels like you're not doing a ton
Is there any online campaigns people play instead of in person

- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

I am also confused in that is The Fiend the only current Canon patron?
It's not. It's just the only one in the free rules.
Each class only has one free subclass (in 2024)
You have to pay for other subclasses?
Yes, selling/licensing books is the business model.
Ahh~ So something like the game I'm writing would be a supplementary if I used D&D as a basis
Walk me through an encounter with a warlock though. I've played Baldurs gate and it seems like you have kinda okay-low combat abilities with a restricted weapon choice, and an eldritch blast. Then a small assortment of 1 or 2 spells you can cast between rests
After that you kinda just use a crossbow or do minimal melee
Warlocks tend to lean on their eldritch blast rather than a ranged weapon, and most (aside from those who take the pact of the blade) tend to avoid melee. EB is a highly rated and highly customisable cantrip.
That becomes a little stale no? One Trick Pony?
Use your pact magic slots to dispense other spells, and your pact itself to help define your role.
Rogues can disarm traps, hide in shadows scale walls, get rid of fall damage, pick locks, do sneak attacks, and get advantage on attacks during surprise.
Warlocks seem like you kinda... sit around and become a turret with Eldritch blast and 2-3 utility spells
Warlocks have a few options to customise their particular style. Take a look at their list of invocations.
Im trying to find those
Think of the Free Rules like a demo for a video game. If you want to "unlock" the rest of the game you will have to buy the book, in this case the Player's Handbook.
Ahh, so D&D has become a Freemium game
I'll have to Google if the OGL is still valid if I want to borrow any elements for my game.
Yes the OGL/SRD are still a thing - that's what the free rules are
You found a page I couldnt! This has much more information
The d&d books have always cost money outside of the basic rules/srd/free rules.. really just the mediums have changed so now there are digital options.
Ahh~
I dont have any D&D books, just White Wolf, ShadowRun, Fate, KoB, BESM, Butler, and some others
Those are other really fun systems!
DMs tend to be the ones who buy the books outside of the PHB. As a forever DM I own thousands of dollars worth of D&D books from all of the editions.
character sheet question: what is the singular "proficiency bonus" box for? isn't a character proficient in specific skills with varying bonuses?
The Proficiency Bonus is the base modifier you add to things that you are proficient with, such as saving throws, weapon attack rolls, and ability skill checks.
For example rogues are proficient with Dexterity and Intelligence saving throws, (initially at level 1) four ability skills, and simple weapons and Martial weapons that have the Finesse or Light property. So when you roll for those, you add your PB plus the appropriate ability modifier.
oh i see. so the skill check is basically roll + general proficiency bonus + ability modifier
and that general PB is given by the class?
You can roll ability skill checks that you're not proficient in, so that would be d20 + ability modifier.
Proficiency bonus is based on overall level of the character.
oh i found it, it's just in the class level table.
A level 1 rogue / level 2 fighter doesn't mean you have a proficiency bonus of +4 since you have +2 PB at level 1 for both classes. Your character level is 2, so it's +2 PB.
right, it's just the highest class PB you have?
Character level is total levels the character has.
character level is yeah, and the PB based on character level. is the PB progression the same for every class? (how level 8 is +3)
Yes.
Hello friends
PB is overall character level yes!

as someone coming from bg3 with no tabletop experience, what are some key differences to pay attention to for my first campaign?
BG3 is extremely different from 5e.
The game takes inspiration from 5e.
You can't skip dialog sadly/j
But uh.. your Dm will fill you in on things it's kinda hard to list all the differences

Ok so I’m trying to get into well D&D and I’m wanting tips and introductions or advice anything helps
Welcome to dungeoning and dragoning, my friend
Hello!!!
Hey everyone so I’m really new to DnD I’ve watched many videos and listened to podcasts on it but I’m still really clueless does anyone have any advice or suggestions or anything to help me? I would also love to play so if you want some one I’d love to!
I've played every class except
Barbarian, Artificer, Paladin, Ranger and Bard!
So, if you need class advice I've mostly got you covered lol
(However, I've heavily researched every class and know my crap mostly anyway play)
Oh well I was thinking of being a paladin
Makes 2 of us
lol
Do you have any tips for paladin’s
Hmm, well depending on the subclass and whatnot may change how you play. Like I looked into oathbreaker subclass (evil) and sorta make my own rules. I sorta end up being a tank and chipping down the enemy or doing a smite and thus taking out a lot of damage.
How should I go about playing dnd for the first time
Though I basically only played Baldurs gate tbh as of far
First thing I do is make my player and backstory thus fitting my class with it.
Unless you’re the DM then I got no clue.
I know the players handbook and dungeon master guide are very helpful
Thank you!!
Charisma is a big helper as well or playing a Dragonborn paladin as the dragonborn base stats usually stack up well with paladin
Yep. After you pick your class, race, and backstory then I’d worry about the stats next and how you want to go about them
Other books to like the monster manual and buncha other interesting books to help you too if they sound interesting enough
ohh I see
Also DnD Beyond app may help

Looks like Dyno has more knowledge than me
There is a lot of stuff tbh
I feel a bit overwhelmed cuz Im trynna start playing
i know the most about this tho
So Im the one DMing but I dont know how to go about it and some other stuff
Where to find the maps, How to go about the story
Is there like a video where people are actually playing
So I could get an idea of how it actually progresses
Check out the Introductory video link above. It's a tutorial video series on the fundamentals of D&D.
I wanted to ask just one more thing
Do you use roll20??
How do you level up
As a DM there are many D&D Youtubers who offer DMing advice. Check out Matt Colville, The DM Lair, Dungeon Dudes, Dungeon Craft, Nerdarchy, Web DM, XP to Level 3, WASD20, Seth Skorkowsky, Esper the Bard, How to RPG, Zee Bashew, Don't Stop Thinking, Icarus Games, Runehammer, Zipperon Disney, and MonarchsFactory, who give advice on DMing and playing.
Thanks man
I don't use Roll20. I use Foundry.
Oh okay okay
You the DM decide how the PCs gain experience -- either experience points or milestone (think chapters).
If you want DMing advice go to #dm-discussion .
Alr alr just one more thing
How does a character gain xp per say
I would highly recommend you try playing D&D before you DM.
Again, the DM decides which method to level up. If it's by experience points then defeating monsters rewards XP. The DM can also reward XP for meeting quest goals.
Yea I really want to tho
But I've got noone to play with I've got sisters who I can play with just fine but I'm the one who knows stuff to be able to Dm
You can watch actual plays. There are many D&D actual plays on Youtube and Twitch.
Yeah thats probably the best bet
Thanks man
You can get the Starter Set, which is geared for new players and DMs.
Alr alr
Hey I’ve been trying to get into dnd but I haven’t really had a chance to play with experienced members is there a place where I could play with more experienced players
Check #find-a-game
Alright thank you
Check out Peril in Pinebrook, it's great for a new DM and free!
Can someone help me understand what 1d12+4 damage means in DnD Beyond? (2024 rules)
I am a barbarian who has a greataxe which I am proficient with. Where does the +4 come from. As I understand proficiency only adds to the attack roll, not the damage.
I am also aware that with Great weapon master I can add 3 damage, and with rage I can add 2 damage in level 5.
So say I roll 12 while raging. Would this be correct 12+4+3+2= 21 dmg
1d12+4 = roll one d12 dice and add 4 to the dice roll result.
The 4 comes from proficiency bonus and the ability that is used for your weapon - in your particular case it's coming from strength.
And yes your final calculation would be correct.
Ah, so since I have +4 in strength, I add that. Makes sense
Yep!
That's a lotta damage!
Now imagine you crit and have to roll your damage dice twice (but not the modifiers and other bonuses - crit damage only means you roll the damage dice twice)
So that would max out at 33 dmg?
Yep - 24 rolled dice damage then add your modifiers and bonuses
Cool cool
This will save my DM some frustration
The extra 3 from GWM are constant, so I could treat it as 1d12+7, and then the 2 from rage are conditional on me raging
How does removing the poisoned condition work
Just your dm saying "alrigut youre no linger poisoned"?
Whatever inflicted the condition will say how long it lasts and how it can be ended. There are also abilities and spells, such as Lesser Restoration, that can end it.
Hey friends,
Super new here. 👋🏼 I'm starting my first campaign as a DM and I'm looking for advice without the snarkiness of Reddit replies. My question is this: I am using the Starter Set to help hold my hand as a new DM, yand it says things like "the players can use Deception to [blank] "... So, I'm wondering how much hand holding I should use for some of the brand new players?
Should I let them find their own way with it? Or for the first few sessions say things like "in this situation, you can use deception to [blank]" or "you can equip a blunt object to knock out and interrogate the goblin." Literally, off the book page.
I'm asking because in my first session as a player, my DM gave zero assistance and we were wiped out by goblins in the first 2 hours. Knowing the minutiae of this complex game may help them be better in the long run.
Thanks for your help!
Is Wilma a good name for an Elf?
Yeah
how to play here
I’m not a dm sorry

I'm a bit confused about the attacking portion of the game. For example, a goblin had a +4 to hit with a scimitar. Would this mean you have to roll to see if they miss like in a pokemon game? Would I set the difficulty to hit like in an ability check then? And then the hit is 5 (1d6 +2). So would it be like I roll a d6 and say I get a 4, then I add 2 and the goblin does 6 damage?
The DM rolls for monsters and NPCs. So for a goblin, the DM rolls a d20 then adds +4 to it.
The damage is a d6 plus 2 damage. The 5 is just the mean average of the damage (this is for DMs who want to speed things along and not bother rolling).
So rolling a 4 on a d6 you then add 2 additional points of damage.
So I just have to look at the +4 to hit
Hello there
Are you planning to DM?
Yes
We can help you out with DMing advice in #dm-discussion then.
Oh okay.
Feel free to keep using this channel for basic questions though. That's what it's there for.
Old man explained it the best, +4 to his is d20+4 if its over the ac of a player they hit, then its 1d6+2 (or what ever mod the weapon uses.) the same goes for players its d20 +mod+prof bonus _(lv 1 is always 2).
for example I have a +3 str mod so its 3+2 so I get a +5 to hit, but only +3 for damage
Hey folks,
So I've been playing more of 5E recently over some of my other systems, and I'm quite enjoying the Forgotten Realms/Sword Coast setting. I've only got the three Starter Set/Essentials Kit adventures so far, plus Phandalin and Below.
What sourcebooks are worth getting? I got the Sword Coast Adventurers Guide, I found it a bit shallow for what I was hoping. I've heard the Dragon adventures are worth it (Dragon Queen/Tiamat duo), but then I'm also looking at the two Waterdeep books, Descent Into Avernus, and Candlekeep Mysteries.
Are any of the older (3E etc) books worth getting, compatible with 5E?
This channel is to learn how to play 5E.
Xanathar's and Tasha's are good rules supplement books. Monsters of the Multiverse is good for additional monster bestiary.
I answered you in #dnd-lore message for lore related stuff.
Good friends. People online usually are not able to meet your needs. Never pay for a game. If you don't have fun in a game find a new one. It's like finding a good job.
Well I have no freinds but if you find a good campaign that maybe I could join then please tell me
Make friends
people online can be really nasty just like people offline
find people you like and keep them close, they may want to play the game you want to play in the future or even help you with writing
I guess I’m not playing
Teach a man to fish
I don’t know if I agree with this.
I’ve played plenty of online games with people who are great- even if they weren’t my immediate friends. As long as we were able to get on the same page before playing, they almost always ended with a great time!
I also disagree with never paying for a game. If it makes sense for someone, I don’t think it’ll make an experience worse to pay for sessions. In fact, paid sessions sometimes can be a better experience - because the DM is invested to make you a “repeat customer”.
This does not ring true for me either. Finding a group online or irl can take time. It just does.
Finding a group that is perfect may not be a realistic goal, but ones idea of perfect may not actually be once you obtain it.
I have made so many close friends by sitting at tables with people I, at the time, did not know, and have had some of the most memorable game moments with them
I along with other here evidently disagree with ithidis. Finding an online game can be very challenging depending on your circumstances. As with IRL groups there’s some criteria you have to consider. At minimum a potential group should match with your availability. For a newbie it should also be run as close to rules-as-written (RAW) as possible, so minimal homebrew.
The rest is vibes/chemistry based, which happens after the campaign starts. Sometimes you just won’t vibe with the table, and that’s fine. No D&D is better than bad D&D.
To help maximize your chances of finding an online game, it’s best to cast a wide net. The more places you use to find a game the more potential matches you’ll get. This server is one tool, but you can also use things like other (unofficial) D&D servers, Reddit’s r/lfg, Facebook groups, etc.
Hi guys, I'm new here 🙂
Online groups have much the same issues as IRL groups, like meeting arrangements. Online can be useful if you lack a local group, but if you struggle to make regular appointments or if, like me, you work a job with shifts and no regular occurring free time you can offer, online doesn't fix those issues either
@hazy skiff
another week of no shows at my lgs 😦
Hi guys, my name is Nay, I want to learn how to play DND because my boyfriend is a DnD player too and I would like to play with him in the future.
He has invited me to play virtual games and I know that it is a little different than in person.
So if a good soul would help me understand the basics I would appreciate it,

Hello I have been looking to get into dungeons and dragons but every group I find meets once and never meets again please can I please get some advice.
it do be like that
I have spent months looking into lore, classes, monsters
I'm even happy with doing a monthly meeting lol
Sadly there is little to nothing that can be done, just keep looking. somtime people just dont jive
2 sessions so far since my lgs was supposed to start a new campaign and not one other person has shown up for a session yet so we havent even done session 0
Wow
last month we were doing oneshots, full group showed for 1 day, half the next week so we did something else, and the rest of the month only me (and the dm ofc)
That's rough
Public games at shops like that can be an amazing way to experience the game, but if players aren't returning that's defintly a problem the dm/shop needs to work on
Last week they said they were gonna put out a post as a reminder and never did
most recent post they put out was advertising that the shop appeared in a movie and also a link to stream it illegally lol
hi, for my next campaign i had the idea to make a stormcast eternal paladin inspired from Warhammer, i don't know with oath to take in ours GM list, do you have an idea? or do you think that the oath of ancien can work?
Try running your character idea in #character-discussion - do note that some concepts from other franchises/games may not translate 100% well into D&D
i have yep
oh i know but that's more in an archetype sense, not necessarily a 1/1 copy, like that's the "feeling" of the concept
I had a idea for a artificer Warforge
i dont understand d&d yet, like, i can make my own campaing? the way i want? so technically i can make a fallout nv themed campaing?
it seems yes
You could. However, aspects of the D&D rules like character classes and abilities won't translate in their entirety. Fallout doesn't have elves and dwarves, for example. Magical spells won't fit in that setting either. D&D is built around roleplaying in a high fantasy setting rather than a sci-fi post-apocalypse, per se.
In some instances, settings like Fallout have their own set of rules, completely different from Dungeons and Dragons. A Fallout roleplaying game currently exists as a product from another publisher:
It may be more straightforward for you to obtain and use that than to adapt D&D rules yourself.

started getting the packs the saturday prior to this one since i like opening card packs and im gonna just build up a small stash to open one day
hey! i'm not just new, i'm the next level of new, i have absolutely no idea of anything, but i'm really excited to get into dnd. what should i even do?

- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.)
- Or play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the Free Rules.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the video are for the 2014 rules. The fundamentals are pretty much the same between 2014 and 2024 rulesets, though.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
damn, that's a lot of help, thank you. i see why you are a DM, you have initiative lol
sorry to bother you ;(, but i actually had a really amazing time just playing the demo (even if it had hard words for a non-native speaker). i was wondering, after i check all the resources, does dnd beyond have some platform to play text based with other people? and... will someone accept a newcomer? or is it like a closed community
The forums on D&D Beyond have play-by-post game advertisements. And while not every group will accept newcomers, the hobby isn't only closed communities.
i know it's hard to find a group, but that's my concern, like how hard is it to find one that i can join without experience yk. plus i always feel like i bother people so i have trouble trying to fit into communities
There are always games open and friendly to new players. You just need to keep looking because openings get filled up very quickly.
Hi
No most groups are accepting while some prefer you come with some experiance most are NPF. anyways goodluck
Oh, friend, you're okay! There's lots of people that'd love to have you!
A lot of people in this community are excitable about new players!
where can i find an online shet so i can use instead of paper
Just Don't let the anxieties get to you!
I'm sure you're a very fantastic and fun person!
Just be brave and new doors will open before you :3
d&d beyond
Its litterly ment for making sheets and rolling (where acceptible)
thanks, i hope i have good luck too lol
it helps to hear that, it softens the nerves a lot <3
that's what i aspire to be at least! ^^
how long does it take to complete make a sheet stat
Depends, the actual stats themselves can only take 15 minutes, but the whole character creation process for some takes days->weeks
What computer language can be used to create an interactive bot for DnD gameplay and what all can the game play on the bot interact with is it more turn base
Since Wizard of the Coast and DNDBeyond are very limited I'm wanting to create a bot that can interact outside of those areas
Days -> weeks-> months depending on procrastination.
Or a few min as I tend to be fast in making backgrounds as simplified as they are
Any luck finding a group? I am also an absolute noob that wants to start but I get overwhelmed and never actually started
xD
Most common programming languages can be used for creating a discord bod, the base language used by discord is JavaScript if I remember correctly. But when googling discord bot with language x you can find a lot of information.
how do I create homebrew subclasses?
I have no clue how to make a subclass. It always say it is similar to something and don't have the necessary class features with the correct required levels
ah thank you
Hello I'm looking for a group to play with how do I go about that?
Same here!
I think there’s a whole section for that. Maybe in the “looking for dm” or “looking for players” tab
Howdy yall
Hello! I'm new to all of this. Literally just made my first character a few minutes ago
welcome to the dnd community!
ive been playing 3 years now im trying to find a new campaign
Yeah me too!
I've seen there's a bunch in the looking for community page. Are they all based within the same world? I'm super new to all of this
most dnd campaigns are set in the forgotten realms yeah
the vast majority wont have an impact on each other though
Normally they’re all set in the same/similar world, but think of it kinda like a multiverse. What happens in one world doesn’t happen in the other :3
Nice
The setting is based on the DM. A lot of DMs have their own homebrew campaign setting unrelated to official ones like the Forgotten Realms.
Majority if not all the campaigns ive played so far have been homebrew so it really just depends on the dm
how do I find a group for an absolute beginner? I can’t seem to find one in #looking-for-dm #looking-for-community #looking-for-players , they all seem to prefer someone with at least a little bit of experience :,)
You can make a post in #looking-for-dm (using the command as detailed in #find-a-game, you can't post directly into the game finding channels) and/or just be patient and keep looking for a group that's looking for a newcomer.
Also don't make assumptions that a group isn't newcomer friendly if they don't explicitly say so. Send a message and ask; as long as you're up front about your level of experience, the worst they can say is no thanks
Thanks, I’ll check it out :D
Hello Gamers. I'm an OG DnD Player from longer than I care to admit ago (I played DnD Basic and ADnD when they first released as a grade-schooler), and played into my HS years, then stepped away because of, you know, life. Fast forward a few decades, I now have middle school kids (and their friends) that have expressed an interest in playing, so I thought I might re-acquaint myself and start DM-ing for them, and see where that leads. Unfortunately, my old original books/manuals have been lost to time, so I am starting fresh, and most of those old rules would be foggy in my head anyways. I've done a fair amount of reading this last month in preparation, and have some digital copies of 5e to review, but I understand DnD 2024 is the latest/greatest. My question is, should I start this batch of kids out with 5e or 2024? Not wanting to break the bank with a group that I'm not sure will fully embrace it leads me towards 5e, just because we can pick up 2nd hand books on the cheap. Is 2024 that much better balanced to make it worth the upgrade? Thanks,
I’d suggest taking a look at the free 2024 rules! That way, you can dive in, play the game with a good chunk of options, and if it’s feeling like a good fit, you can pick up a PHB. ✌🏼
I'll do that. Is it just the PHB and MM that are being up-revved? Or the DMG too?
Yeah all three. MM will be released later in February but the other two are out now.
Thanks, I'll do some more digging. My timeline for a first Session with this group of 4-6 middle schoolers is a couple months out, so I have some time to prepare.
One more question though, is there a preferred Forum Board that many here might use? I sometimes prefer that format for tracking conversations. Sometimes here you have overlapping layers of conversation that get muddled and lost.
Hmm.
Roll20 has a board feature for its games.
But given your use case, I think having your own Discord server with a few channels would work best. Eg. One channel for character build stuff, one for memes/jokes, one for offline roleplay, etc.
Edit: you can also pin messages and mark/set channels as “read only”
I'll see if I can get what I need off these Discord Conversations first. I shouldn't be too needy, but it's been a little while...and want the first couple sessions with these kids to be fun.
Hey all. Where on the character sheet for DnD Beyond do I find the xp??
Might be Manage Character?
On the character sheet when you select "manage" one of the options is "manage experience" when you select that a little sidebar appear where you can adjust it without fully leaving the sheet view 🙂
Got it, thanks! Lol. It's not as intuitive as I would have figured.
Not gonna sugarcoat it, Beyond suckssss 😭
Ya, lol. It's not great so far. I might just go paper anyways.
Might as well do it manual if you're gonna have to do things manually on the darn website!
(Certain class features and subclass features don't have any feature to just.. add them on to certain rolls and you gotta go outta your way to do it anyway urghh)
yo someone wanna do a oneshot ik some basic things but not much i wanna do quick playthru so i can understand the game
please note we only allow group formations in our looking-for channels. the instructions for posting via the template are in #find-a-game
oh thank u
Hello, I was just wondering how exactly the game works, I’ve seen several people play it and thought it would be cool to try out, or try to build one at least.

So the DM sets difficulty for abaility checks, skill checks, and saving throws? I just want to make sure
Yes. Monsters/NPCs will have a DC based on their CR/level.
Thank you!

Most DMs are friendly to new players but you have to put in the effort to learn the game. The DMs aren't going to constantly pause the game to teach you the fundamentals.
Y’all, how do I get a group/Dm? me and my parents play dnd together, but it’s just us. No other players, no campaign, is we just take turns making up quests. What should I do?
You could also rotate DM duties among the group. Round-robin play is a recognized format: https://gnomestew.com/round-robin-campaign-management/
hey guys
can you rate my barbarian?
he is a lvl one
so he is pretty basic
he is my first ever dnd character
What's the appropriate channel to ping a GM for a campaign if their DMs aren't open? ~
no idea
Tysm
can someone rate my barbarian?
o, sorry
this one should work
I can see it. Your Strength is fairly low for a Barbarian
i found it on pintrest
i will draw him in my style tomorrow if i have time
what does "tweak" mean?
Or maybe you start at level 2 instead. Maybe you get more gear.
he helped me create balu, so i think it is fine
i think i changed what i could to make him stronger

Give the free rules a look-over and specifically focus on how a character sheet works and the dice rolls (D20 test, attack rolls, saving throws, and skill/ability checks).
Hi, hi, nice to meet everyone. It's my first time playing, so I'm pretty clueless. Glad to be here, though. ^-^
If you're just starting out, take a look at #learn-to-play and the free rules linked to in the bot message above.
Feel free to ask any specific questions as you run into them

Thank you very much man
Can anyone tell me is there anything I need to know other than the basics ? Like do I need the handbook in the first place or I can just make literally everything up?
Depends on your group but it's safe to say start with the free basic rules https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
I don't have a group....no one in my country knows the game even exists
Scroll up a bit previously in chat - we have Looking For Game channels.
So I know most if not all the basics.....is there anything else? Like I know the main rules but not all the details like when to roll wich dice and how bonuses work or any of that stuff but I think I'll make sth up
Sadly it's midnight now....and I don't have my phone most of the time with me cuz I'm a senior highschooler and my parents don't like me to contact strangers....now imagine being on a call for like an hour with them.....
The dice rolls are important - I'd read up on them.
They play an important game mechanic roll in the game.
Also as much as it pains me to say it, D&D may not be the best game to try out right now in this phase of life.
I'm going to do that....and make the dice at home cuz my country doesn't have any other dice than the 6 face
I am aware....but it's not like I'm allowed to do anything
I can't use my phone or do my favourite hobbies because they are all art or music or reading books and all that doesn't sit very well with 8 hours of study every day.....usually more....so I just need sth else to escape this boring Hellingly repetitive reality
I've been stuck in my room studying for like 10 hours a day for the last 3 months....
So I just really really need this and I'll figure sth out myself
Cuz the game is ruled only ny our imagination so I heard....I once found some ppl playing and the dm said they were facing an elder orc in dragonscale armour and the attacks of the Knight didn't work so the mage just said I CAST RESURRECTION!!!
So yeah....the game could be hilarious and that's why I wanna play it
I wanna get into it more as well

This where reading the rules would definitely help. The die rolls and the bonuses are the central mechanic of the game; it's not quite dictacted solely by imagination, there are quite a lot of rules and regulations to ensure a fair game. As for getting dice other than a d6, you don't have to use physical dice. Many websites including google have an online dice roller.
The Dyno post above has a bunch of useful resources!
Thanks! Good luck to you too
Reading on the hadozee race the druid class doesn't really fit well with the lore, but we already completed our first mission
Is that okay?
Sure. The updates brought in Tashas Cauldron of Everything and now the 2024 updates means that race/species doesn't generally negatively impact your class choice. You can be a fairy barbarian without issue. Or an orc wizard.
DM is using 3.5E
... okay then you may have better luck asking about that in #dnd-elder-editions. Most folks discuss the latest version of D&D (5th edition) in most of these channels.
Ok thanks!
hi , how do i even start playing? i have been interested in doing so but have no idea how

hi. i am a new player on D&D. English in not my native lahguage therofore. maybe i make some mistake. Can i ask? In game we should turn on the micro or we can chat with message?
That is up to the DM on how they set up communications between them and their players.
where i can join a game for watch how to players play in discrord?
I have my own Discord server and we use voice because it's easier and faster to communicate. I use four monitors when I DM so I don't have time to constantly look at the text chat.
thanks
Most people don't appreciate strangers watching their private games. You can watch actual plays on Youtube and Twitch though.
oh, ok
Ok
Hello, I'm new to D&D, what are the most important things to learn/have before joining a game?
Well a character is like the start my opinion then you learn the common rules
Reading the first chapter of the rules is a good preparation and tells you the common terms.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game
Some games may want you to create a character upon joining/allow you to bring an existing one, which is where the next chapter comes in.

Hello, I am new to the game and my question is: As DM, how do I know, if a persuasion check is a success? I mean over at what roll is a success and under what is a failure? or is it up to me
theres a guide in the dmg but at the end of the day its your call
At the simplest level, whenever you call for a check either
- The game rules will tell you what the DC (difficulty class) of the check should be
- If the rules don't specify and you're running a pre-published adventure, the adventure will tell you what the DC should be
- If the rules don't specify and you're running your own home-made adventure, you will decide what the DC should be
In the case of 3, how you decide a DC depends on a lot of factors including what the check is, the circumstances of the check, etc
For deciding a persuasion check, it's often a case of mentally comparing the argument the player is making against the nature of the NPC they're trying to persuade. For example, trying to convince a guard to look the other way for a small bribe will be easier (lower DC) for a lazy or corrupt guard, or one who is financial troubles and really needs the gold, and harder for a more duty bound or rigid guard that isn't enticed by the bribe.
In the Player's Handbook/Free Rules, you should look up the Influence action as that should give you a starting point for figuring things out
Hi guys, just joined. I have never actually played Dnd but i have watched a few episodes of Dimention 20 and admit that i find the game very appealing
As a new player, would you recommend buying the physical PHB?
- it's a permanent investment
- no batteries or Internet connection required
- lacks online connectivity
- vulnerable to being lost, stolen or damaged
All good points. The DM has shared the DDB PHB with me, but I was wondering if you thought it would be a good idea to have a physical copy with me when playing
Maybe it's most natural to just ask the DM questions in that case
You can use search functions and screenshots or bookmarks and sticky notes, whatever works best for you.
any advice as to where i should start? not sure how the groups work
Hi all.
New to all this so please be patient with me.
If decided I would like to be a bard.
My question is , how many music instruments are you actually allowed to be proficient in.
The core traits say "choose 3" then the background of entertainer say "choose 1" and then the feat in the background musician says "gain proficiency with 3 of my choice" is that 7 altogether. Or is it 3 in total and there is just an overlap.
Thanks
Did you check out the Free Rules and give basic character creation a try?

So I'm right about the 7 not 3
There are plenty of musical instruments to pick from.
How to play dnd?
Is it gard to find ppl to play?
Depends how new you are. Remember that not everyone who starts D&D sticks with it and the PHB (or any D&D book) is a not a trivial amount of money. This is especially true given that the free rules exist. So my advice is always "play with the free rules until you think "hey, this D&D thing is cool and I'm gonna stick with it" and then invest in a book or too"
Try and avoid falling into the trap a lot of people do with D&D, or any new hobby really, as seeing the investment of money as the
real start
of your hobby experience
Yes, it can be difficult or time consuming to get a group together. You're trying to find a moderately large group of people to commit to investing a good chunk of time on a regular basis
Thank you. I will hold off for now! I just really like the rules hehe
Then go wild with the D&D free rules
I want to become a lord and start war on behalf on king and desert the kingdom and run to the what is enemy king and sell information about the king that i just deserted
I'm honestly not sure what that has to do with what I said?
Dont worry
I have another question about role-playing dumb characters. My barbarian has 8 INT. Does that mean I have to roleplay him completely dum, and that I cannot really aid in solving puzzles and such?
That would be a discussion to have with your DM, or possibly to discuss in #character-discussion
Brainless barbarian 0 int 0 charisma and charisma checks turn in luck check that sound better
What your intelligence score represents varies from table to table, there's no fixed rules for that
I see, thank you
For example, at many tables your intelligence score represents not being "dumb" or "stupid" or "smart" or anything like that, but a specific form of knowledge. It's book-learnt, memorised, academic knowledge
Whereas your wisdom score might represent your experience based knowledge, stuff learned through doing rather that studying a book or sitting in a classroom
I guess I can try to solve puzzles in less intelligent ways. So if I think I know the solution, I can try to roleplay it as if my character figured out the solution by chance
As such, a low Int score barbarian might still have a lot of practical knowledge, they just don't know what the third arcane principle of translocation is, or how many divine edicts were handed down by Karsh the Just, or the blossoming cycle of northern flame fig
Good to know!
They know how to gut a human with a fork
Exactly, you might not be good at logic-ing your way through the puzzle, but you might be able to say "Well this looks like the kind of lock they used in the tomb of Chrom the Wild Heart"
I'm going to ask you please stop pinging me with random, nonsensical things if that's okay?
Sorry
Is anyone hosting a new campeign
Also another point on this, Int 8 isn't really that low considering the average is 10
Yes, and sometimes (or very often) simple does the trick!
You'll wanna check out #find-a-game, there's intructions there on finding games
But it's the lowest a PC can get, right
Nope
Oh
I believe at character creation you could get as low as 3 but it's unlikely
Yeah, we are doing point buy, maybe that's why I thought that
However, that's only possible using rolled stats, which I wouldn't say are newcomer friendly
yeah, point buy adds a lower limit which may be 8
This is because going below 8 is generally not a great idea
I'm new to DND, I know some stuff from social media. I'm currently working on a Plasmoid Wizard, any tips when creating a character?
When picking spells, try and get a range of spells for different purposes, not just a ton of attacks
okay
Can someone give me tips to find a group to play with?
#find-a-game has instructions on how to do so on this server, and iamrazorwing made this guide for searching for games in general
I wanna play DnD but idk how to start or where to go ( as in i need help finding a group). May someone help me??
For finding a group, you'll wanna check out #find-a-game
Also #learn-to-play is a good resource too
Ok, thanks very much.
- If you're creating a character without a DM, then you're making one for practice, which is still a good thing. Don't expect to use that character as is.
- Have multiple character concepts and be willing to tweak them to fit the adventure/setting/tone of whatever table you join.
- If you write a backstory, make it fit the character level. Level 1 heroes haven't accomplished much yet. Similarly, the coolest things to happen to your character should be ahead of them in the adventure to come, not behind them in their backstory.
- While your backstory can be detailed for yourself, give your DM the brief version. Give your character a reason to adventure generally, to go on the specific adventure the DM prepares, and to work with the party.
- Each class has a primary stat; that one should likely be your highest, and Constitution is important for everyone. You don't need to make your stats bad to roleplay your character that way (for instance, you can be an absent-minded wizard without sacrificing Intelligence).
Too add to razorwing's bullet points:
- In my opinion, the right length for the backstory for a level 1 character is 3-4 sentences. I joke about my framework as the "Babylon 5" model: Who are you? What do you want? Where are you going (in a metaphorical sense)? Why NOW?
- Flavor is free - you can describe appearances and roleplay however you like as long as the mechanics don't change. But be willing to have those appearances fit the general tone of the world you're in. In a Ravenloft adventure, I would not enjoy a Magic Missile spell that was flavored as the target(s) being a pelted by a mass of rubber chickens that fall on them and then vanish. A swarm of stinging insects might be "better"; an even-more traditional silvery arrow that hits the target and vanishes would probably be even "better." But in an Eberron adventure, flavoring your Fire Bolt cantrip as a prototype magic pistol? Totally OK.
Hi guys, Ive been trying to make my character but gnomes arent on the list on DnD beyond - am I missing something?
Gnomes aren't a free species on DnD Beyond.
oh, that sucks :(
You'll need to purchase the player's handbook to gain access to them.
yeah they still want people to actually buy their handbooks and stuff
so you can't just use dnd beyond to circumvent that
Hey. I've been around for what seems to be 9 months, and I've always had an interest in DnD, but for some small reasons here and there, I've been discouraged each time, without ever really starting, or getting into it.
I've started with creating a character sheet, I was hoping to make a simple Fighter character, but ended up making them a Fighter Acolyte, so I figure I might have to multi-class or something.
I am willing to learn, and I have had to follow instructions before that I don't make my characters too complex, but yeah. Any guides? Any folks willing to help teach, show, and take on a new player?
If I get a physical copy, can I use it on DnD beyond to unlock it?... or is it online orders only? (shipping to me would be crazy)
i'm pretty sure it's just a proof of purchase thing
Cool! Thanks so much!
like there's a number in every copy and you just input it on the site to prove that you do in fact own a physical copy
Hey heys all i am just a chill canine yeen beastfolk looking to find a community to play with. Might I be so capable to ask where I can make the request to find said community and session to join please?
Oh i had seen that but is there where i make the request or is there a specific channel for that?
Hello! Hopefully it sticks this time! I'll link the basic rules below so you can read through them.
As for your character idea, I'd recommend sticking with just one class. Multiclassing is a fairly complex mechanic, and is easy to mess up if you're not experienced with the game. Thankfully, you can easily pick the acolyte background and just play a fighter, getting the best of both worlds. Or perhaps take a look at the paladin class, which is a classic divine combatant.
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

- [How does it work?](#learn-to-play message)
- [Where do I join?](#learn-to-play message)
- [Frequently Asked Questions](#learn-to-play message)
I only ask is there a specific server channel to make the request in cause the faq does NOT state what server channel that you can make the request for community in.
To the best of my knowledge, physical & DDB purchases are completely separate.
Just because you have an acolyte background does not mean you have to multi-class.
I think keeping things as simple as possible would be ideal for me. I don't think picking "Soldier" instead of Acolyte would be preferred as I've read on some recommendations that "Soldier" perks can slow down the pace of the game severely, and well, I don't want to burden other players. I'm completely fine with playing a Fighter, and I'd like to keep things as basic as would be comfortable. If you figure that Acolyte won't require me to also add a Class to Cleric (based on my PC backstory, they were orphaned due to their hometown being raided and razed, and they were taken in by a local Temple), then I'd be relieved.
Yeah, Acolyte sounds like a great option for you. It'd start you off with a few basic spells as well, which can really help with the flavor of your character.
I heard "Farmer" is fine, but I haven't seen that option on the DnD Beyond prog I've been using to setup my character.
Okay. If you sound optimistic, then I'm excited to see if this first character of mine sticks.
DnD Beyond does say my character isn't configured completely yet, so that's a bit confusing, but I have downloaded a PDF of my character sheet so I believe it should be ready. Except, well, I don't know what Faiths there are to pick from, that's about the only thing outstanding.
oh i see you just click it and it takes you to a suggested ah makes sense i was thinking you had to put it into a certain server or something
So you would recommend that I just pick and join any community and potentially their Discord Server and see if I fit in with said community?
You certainly could! Finding a group can be the toughest part of DnD, so take your time and look for a group that you're comfortable playing with. You can check out #find-a-game for ways to search here on the server.
any dnd discord community with eu timezone?
try checking out #looking-for-community
Its not mentioned there whether it is an eu community or america
You can ask
Often games on community servers are happening at all times so time zones are not really a useful measure to work with
It doesn’t hurt to try, often times it doesn’t work but you’ll find a group eventually, I only have 1 group that split after sess 1 and the other near the end of the game (life)
Hi everyone
If I wanna buy a DnD set what should I get
The Starter Set is a good place to start if you have friends who never played D&D before and want to play as well.
The Player's Handbook is the first book you should get.
May thou send me a link to both?
I recommend you buy them from your local game shop or Amazon rather than directly from Wizards of the Coast because it's cheaper. However, you can buy the digital books from D&D Beyond.
Dungeons and Dragons Essentials Kit - Starter Set Bundled Extra
6 Dice Sets, Flannel Bags, Master Screen, Figures, New Heroes, Dice Guide, Statistic Sheets - DND 5th Edition Rolling Board Game
Is that the right one?
Yes.
There are a few different starter sets, each one comes with a different short adventure.
Thanks any recommendations?
I think they stopped selling the older versions. They're pretty much the same but again with different adventures.
Ah ok
I think the current set is either dragons of icespire peak or stone wind island I know there will be a new one even Telly
Current starter set: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. Essentials kit: Dragon of Icespire Peak.
Hey! Quick question, what is the difference between warlocks, paladins and clerics not gameplay wise but like lore wise if thats the correct term for it?
How do DMs tend to reconcile a half-giant barbarian and a kobold barbarian having comparable strength?
I shrug and dont' worry about it tbh
A Warlock is a person who has been granted the knowledge of magic by making a deal with a powerful entity.
A Paladin is a person whose oath and conviction is so strong that greater powers grant them magical powers as a reward.
A Cleric is a person whose religious faith is so strong that one or more deities reward them with magical powers.
I'd just describe the kobolds feats of strength more cartoonishly.
Hello guys I’m fairly new to the whole dnd thing but I already had a idea for a character jsut not sure if it was possible
Also not sure how to find campaigns if people post them or if I have to search independently
If you're looking for campaigns here on the server, I'd check #find-a-game .
Oh okay, thanks! I still wonder tho, is it possible for a warlock to make a deal with a god or does it have to be a like an eldrich being and do paladins have an oath to someone or just to a concept?
Nothing explicitly prevents a Warlock from making a pact with a god.
Paladin oaths are typically to concepts, but something like an Oath of Devotion can easily be flavored to be directed towards a loved one.
When it comes to the flavor of your subclass, the person who has the final say is your DM, however. I'd recommend running these ideas by them before solidifying anything for your character.
Hi
Thanks man, I apreciate the help a lot
Hey, I'm relatively new to dnd and I'm going to be dming my first campaign soon. any tips?
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
- Conduct a session zero to lay out everyone’s preferences and expectations before the game even begins.
- If you haven't played at all, watch at least a few minutes of some streamed games, professional or not. It'll give you the basic idea of how play flows.
- Try to engage all the players, even if it's a just "What is your character up to?" Be wary, however. Some are perfectly happy being audience members.
- Don't solve problem players with in-game solutions. In other words, don't punish the characters for your players' bad behavior. Talk to them and try to solve the problem.
- Don't try to avoid failure. That's impossible. Instead learn from it.
- Plan something but not everything. You'll figure out your own sense of doing enough/too much over time.
- Realize you'll get curveballs all the time so be ready to improv.
- Run a pre-written adventure or one-shot to get your bearings as a DM. Doing so will help you get some practice instead of having to first build a world (even a small one) and situation. Read any content in full before you run it.
- Don't see the game as a DM-versus-players scenario. Be a fan of the players. Try to present them with settings that let them be heroic/cool/whatever they're hoping to be in-game.
- Communicate. The game relies on it, and that goes for out-of-game stuff as well as in-game. In particular, communicate about everyone's expectations so that all have a good time.
- Don’t try to absorb all the info at once so you’re ready. That’s like trying to learn all the baseball rules before ever picking up a bat. Know the basics, start playing, and the rest will come with time and practice.
Read blogs, watch videos, search on the server for "dm tips." Lots of advice out there, so absorb what makes sense to you and discard the rest.
Head on over to #dm-discussion to ask for advice.

Thank you. I found one community that's already been super-welcoming, and I hope I get to join my first game in the near future.
How common is it to find text based run games like on discord or other platforms? Besides the dnd beyond bot would people recommend any others?
Play by post/text-based D&D games are not as common as voice or VTT based games based on my anecdotal observation but they do show up on a fairly regular basis in our Looking For Game channels.
Many D&D community servers offer text-based games - could check #looking-for-community and see what they have.
Also try the D&D Beyond forums.
Awesome! Thanks 🙂
Hey gadies and lentlemen, quick question for you all. I know the classes, and I have a general idea on what they do and such. But I don't really understand how they're played if that makes sense, I think knowing that would kind of give me a better idea on where to start for character backstories for those types of classes.
So like (for example), rogues aren't great at open combat so they usually opt for the stealthy approach. Barbarians are pretty tanky and have good dps output, but they don't provide much for the party. Not trying to min-max for reference, just want to make up for some holes in the partys class combination and have a character backstory that makes sense for the class. Thanks for any help btw!
Currently looking for one, but the ones I think I'm most interested in to fill in the general roles are
Paladin, Druid, Cleric, Bard, and Monk
Mmm bard might be really fun to play, I like being the supporter type. If I can help in social situations and buff allies that'd be fun
Thanks!
Hi, newbie here, is it possible to run a single player game to learn the basics or does it have to be a group?
D&D is a game based around one Dungeon Master (DM) and at least one player but typically three to five players.

Solo D&d is possible but a bit hard if you dknt know the rules. And kinda requires allot of legwork to do.
There’s a play-by-post Reddit forum (r/pbp) that you can find games on exclusively - I’d say it’s fairly active. It’s across various TTRPGs but 5e is by far the most popular. They have a discord server as well
Appreciate it 🙂
I've forgotten, but when adding a modifer to dice rolls do you either, add the modifer per dice rolled or roll all the dice then add the modifer last? Thanks.
It depends a bit on what roll you're talking about. In most cases, the latter.
Any dice for what ever it is +plus mod.
It’s not per dice roll, it’s after all dice are added.
thanks
If my damage is a d8 and I have a +3
It’ll be result +3
I ofcourse can make a new character if needed! But unfortunately necromancer seems to be a pay only class in dnd beyond unless I’m being dumb
Welcome aboard! Check out #find-a-game for help finding a group.
Okii tyyy!
I can’t find anything for looking threw the groups unfortunately:(
It's rare that you'll find the right group playing at the right time for you straight away. Keep an eye on the #looking-for-players channel, and try other avenues such as the D&D Beyond forums or sites like Roll20.
Mhm, I put up a looking for dm thingy aswell!
If you like. I think you can only raise a post there once per seven days so take your time, see how other people do it, and plan what you want to say to show yourself at your best before you post.
I did post my post but I had just noticed smn messaged me like 9 minutes ago so ima talk with them!
A post made there is automatically removed after a week, at which point the poster can post again. This means that posts in there are constantly changing and getting updated so you'll need to keep checking. Persistence is key
Best of luck!

So, using 2014 rules, how do I tell how many of what level spells I can learn? And am I able to just add spells to my book, or do I have to manually find them?
For Wizard.
At level 1, the 2014 wizard gets 6 spells, and you gain two more per level up. You can consult the chart for what spell level you'd have slots for here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/classes#QuickBuild12
You can add additional spells (as you can know for your wizard level) if you can find from spell scrolls and spellbooks.
I guess neither of these really help me to understand.
Does it have to be from something I find in the world, or can I just learn the ones I need like every other class learns their abilities?
You just get two spells on level up, without needing to find them.
Okay, thank you.
I already knew about scribing, I was just concerned about filling my already existing slots.
You can add spells to your spellbook if you find them in the course of the game as OMYAC describes.
Yeah, that I knew. Thanks.
Oh, one more thing, for context
The spells I get upon level up have to match my new spell slots, right? For example, if I were to level up to 4th Level, I'd get a cantrip and a 2nd-Level spell, right?
If you wanted. You don't have to take higher-level spells to fill those slots.
You can just upcast.
Oh, so it's less like a level-rule to follow and more like
"You can use this amount of these spells" (slots), and "you can take any level spell you want, so long as you have slots for it"
Exactly. The wording is such:
Each time you gain a wizard level, you can add two wizard spells of your choice to your spellbook for free. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown on the Wizard table. On your adventures, you might find other spells that you can add to your spellbook.
Okay, that makes so much more sense.
Sorry for my confusion!
That's how learning happens!
It's my first time playing a spellcaster and I did really good last session so I'm inspired to lean a lot harder into it
Spellcasting is the most complicated part of the game, in my view, so you're likely to get things wrong. But again, that's part of how we all learn.
Fair!
im pretty new to dnd im confused what is like 5e 3e and like old school whats the difference? what does it mean?
There are different editions of D&D, meaning there are different sets of rules.
The current edition, 5e, is the fifth such iteration.
ohhh ok like is there a difficulty difference?
D&D has been around for 50 years. There are have been many editions plus revisions of those editions.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Editions_of_Dungeons_%26_Dragons
I've heard there is. Different rulesets appeal to different types of people and enable different sorts of gameplay.
With each new edition the rules were refined and tweaked. Some would say 5E is "easy" compared to the older editions.
Do you play video games much? You can think of the difference between 3e and 5e as being similar to the difference between Smash Bros Melee and Smash Bros Ultimate, for example
im a big nintendo fan
so yea i got it
same but different kinda thing
More or less, yeah
Things improve over time through experience, testing, feedback, etc.
Of course people will always want to play the older versions for nostalgia.
Hey does anyone want to look at my character i created? I'm a noob and don't know if it's good or bad
If you’d like to have your character reviewed, you can post a link to the character sheet in #character-discussion
Do i just post a link to the page?
What did you make the character sheet on?
D&d beyond
Probably a #character-discussion is a better place, but "good or bad" is very relative. Is it a character you think you'd enjoy playing? That's the important thing.
In that case, check to make sure the character sheet is set to “Public.” Once it is, there should be a “share” button at the top of the page near the long and short rest buttons
Cool I'll post it

It's there if anyone wants to check it out
Yall, how are the pc stats determined? Are there more ways than to roll 4 and add the highest 3?
There's Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8) and Point Buy.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#Step3DetermineAbilityScores
^ beat me to the punch lol
There's also various different ways to roll, like 4d6 drop lowest, 4d6 reroll 1's etc etc
Usually the DM is the one who tells the players how to roll.
You shouldn't roll without the DM witnessing it.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
^
Using point buy, it's 15 before you add any increases from your background
As a whole, though, 20 is the max after you've leveled up a few times
Thanks dude, I apreciate it.
Never played before but was invited to join a casual game with friends what is the tallest most jacked thing u can be for a barbarian player lol?
Not much at level 1. Read the class:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Barbarian
Thank youu ☺️
If you're asking about species, then Goliath is a great option!
There's also a minotaur race if the DM allows that book
Hah yess🙌 now I’m torn between the two
I want to play as a barbarian who dreams of making it as a bard despite no capability to do so and just gets frustrated and hits people with a bassoon or something lol
My friend is playing as a half elf ranger, how do we find out his hitpoints?
at level 1, a characters hit points are equal to their hit die, plus their constitution modifier. Your hit die is determined by what class you are playing. A ranger’s is a d10, so a level 1 ranger’s HP is 10+Con Mod
2024 ranger is a d10 hitdie and I believe the rules when you level up is take the average number on your hit die plus your con mod?
Thank you, I was mistaken there
So a level 1 ranger would be 10+con, level 2 would be 15+con, if I'm correct
I could be wrong tho
That's up to you and your DM to determine the method of increasing hp, either rolling or use the mean average (5 hp for d10 + Con mod).
It would be 6, if you take the average value, not 5. The actual average is 5.5, and HP is one of the few places where you round up
Thanks man, I apreciate it.
?tag new levelup
Gaining a Level
Typically, a character starts at level 1 and advances in level by adventuring. With each new level, characters acquire new capabilities that equip them to handle greater challenges.
There are two common ways to determine when you gain a level, and your DM will let you know which is used in your campaign.
- Experience Points. As they overcome challenges and complete adventures, characters earn Experience Points (XP), which are awarded by the Dungeon Master. The Character Advancement table lists the XP you need to advance to a level
- Milestone. These campaigns let the story drive advancement, awarding levels when adventurers accomplish significant goals in the campaign. Many official adventures use this method.
Your DM might start your group’s characters at a level higher than 1. A DM can also use feats as a form of advancement after characters reach level 20 to provide greater power to characters who have no more levels to gain.
Level 2 would be 16 + (2 x CON mod)
That didn’t have the info I wanted
Ohhhh okay, I didn't know HP was rounded up
If you take the average value of the hit die, yes, it is
Yeah. PHB2024, in Chapter 2, has a shortcut summary table. It amounts to 7 for Barbarian, 6 for Fighter/Ranger/Paladin, 4 for Sorcerer/Wizard, and 5 for everything else.
And CON mod applies every level, as do Tough & Dwarven Resilience.
We don't want your character to die. So... just about everything is rounded down except HP.
That makes sense lol
Hi
is it possible to make a vampire that is a zendikar/umbral human mix?
That's not really a question for this channel, which is to help new players learn the rules of the game.
oh shoot! what is that channel you linked?
If that's for creating a PC then you should ask your DM. They have finally say what's allowed at their table.
didnt you link a channel? i saw it pop up then it disappeared
If it's for a PC then #character-discussion
What does that die do that has like 10-100?
Percentile die? Often used for things like random tables
Wym?
For example, Wild Magic has a table of effect that rolls a d100 to determine the effect
You roll the die with 10-00 alongside d10 to get a random d100 roll
So if you roll 20 and 6 as an example, your roll is 26 out of 100

wow. first i learned about that screen reader thing. that does sound annoying.
browsing through that learn to play channel reminds me that i still need to finish writing down the Before the Storm transcript. so far i'm done the intro and like 60% of the cleric.
Hello, I am new to D&D. I have played only one "one shot" but I want to learn more about the game and play with people.
what are you interested in learning about it?
I am still confused about how to play and how to make good characters.
And how to join people games, I don't know where to look/write.
Hello, I have no knowledge of DND whatsoever besides that it is a role playing fantasy. I think you ask DM if you can roll for certain things? No idea! Anyways I’m looking to learn more about the game and hopefully eventually join a game that is newbie friendly.

you can look on r/DnDLFG or visit game stores in your area to see if they are hosting sessions
Using your imagination on describing what you are attempting to do in game helps to make a good character. A long drawn out backstory isn't necessary. And not all good characters are going to have really high stats . But how you play the character is what makes it a good or bad character.
additionally
Marisha Ray: Lessons in being a Good Roleplayer (XPtoLvl3)

additionally, there is no such thing as winning and losing in DnD, there is only having fun and telling a good story together
some of the best stories come from failed rolls and the consequences
Huh? Who said anything about winning or losing?
Thank you both 💕
nobody did, but some newer players are scared of failing their rolls because they think they won't have fun like that
just getting it out of the way
I think it would be best if I start with a one shot.
Granted. That didn't cross my mind. Thank you for pointing it out.
That is a good way to learn the basics of how to play. There are pros and cons to one shot and large campaigns both. And all the pros and cons come back to the DM. It's the DM's responsibility to deal with troublesome players, and also provide a good backdrop for the one-shot or campaign to be played.
Is there anyone to one hand a spear and use a shield?
You can use a shield and spear yes, there's better weapon choices to use with a shield but it is definitely possible
Epic thanks
Im looking for a weapon with good reach while using a shield
My friend she wants her first character to be a shield maiden and protect the party as a fighter
Spears have the same range as every other melee weapon, that being 5 feet (not including throwing it) and the only one handed weapon with reach is a whip which doesn't have the greatest damage 😅
The best choice for a weapon with a shield, assuming you have the proficiency with it. Is a longsword, Warhammer or battleaxe as they all do d8+STR damage
Alright thanks

The best way to get the Player’s handbook cheaper is to buy it on Amazon. Otherwise you can find the basic rules for the species and classes and such online
If you have questions in need of clarification #dnd-rules can help too
As mentioned by the other fellow, the core rules are online on the official d&d website. If you want to see the rules in action for a better understanding of them, I would fully recommend you watch some videos and even campaigns on YouTube

hello everybody i'am new here but i have been into d&d for a while now and would like too try too host a campaign for a change but i don't have anyone too play whit so i came here but i don't know how too ask
Read the info/instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels to organize/find a game
The bot commands start with /looking-for
i tried doing that but i didn't understand
Start typing “/looking-for” here and see what pops up - then select the kind of post you want to make (e.g. /looking-for dm” to create a post in #looking-for-dm. the bot will then give you a form to fill out and submit. Once submitted the bot will create a post in the desired channel and attach a thread to your post. Use the thread to provide any corrections, updates, or communication with folks interested in your LFG post.
Again this information and instructions are in #find-a-game and we really do recommend reading them carefully
ok thank you
Do you calculate initiative when creating teh character or is that done during fights
Initiative is based off your dexterity modifier
You can calculate it as you build your character and is used when determining initiative in combat.
So ypu dont have to roll before every encounter?
The DM indicates when a combat encounter starts. They will then ask everyone to roll for initiative (d20 + Dex modifier).
Oh okay so it is optional if you choose to roll during character creation?
No, you do not roll for iniative during character creation but at the start of each combat encounter.
On your character sheet should be a section for your initiative bonus, which is usually your Dexterity modifier but could include things like the Alert feat (+2 to Initiative).

hellu everyone! im new to dnd and I have played for like 30 min with my friends and it was very fun! im very shy but i'd love to try to join in on a dnd one day! and make many new coold friend
I highly recommend checking the message above you then.
Is perception/passive wisdom rolled when a player or dm wants it to be rolled or is that rolled during character creation?
Your perception modifier is a static score that is added to a d20 roll when your DM feels it's appropriate.
Your passive perception is a static score that allows a DM to determine whether you "automatically" notice things, under certain circumstances. There's no rolling involved.
It's for the DM to check if your PC notices something without them asking you to roll, thus avoiding "metaknowledge" that you the player are now suspicious there may be something there.
Thanks, I apreciate the help
For example, a bunch of goblins are hidden behind some rocks. If the DM asks you to roll for Perception for no reason when the party walks by the rocks then you the player will be suspicious something/someone may be near the rocks. Passive Perception let's the DM check if any of the PCs may notice (out of the corner of their eyes) something is amiss and may spot a goblin (against their Stealth check).
Oh okay, that helps quite a lot actually
Is it passive perception against the dms stealth roll?
Passive skill checks are meant to be for over the course of time rather than at a specific instance.
Oh okay I think I understand a bit more now
Yes, the DM rolls for the enemies' Stealth check and sees if the Passive Perception scores meet or beats the Stealth roll(s).
Thanks!
Its also worth noting, if a player wants to roll a perception check, rather than relying on their passive score, they can do that too. That is referred to as the Search action.
But the point is, your DM may not give you any hint about when it is a good idea to take the search action.
So your passive perception is meant to be a way to represent your basline level of awareness, without breaking out the dice for every little thing
That said, Passive Perception ISN'T your minimum Perception score. It's essentially just the average as if you're rolling several times over a period of time.
I see perception in the skills and passive wisdom(perception) on the character sheet, is the secound one the passive perception and how do I calculate it?
Passive Perception = 10+WIS bonus. You also add your proficiency bonus if you're proficient in Perception.
Thanks man, I apreciqte it a lot

@grim void
I will admit Im doing something stupid, I have never played before yet I will start by dming. I have been looking for games and such for like 4 years or sum but it just doesnt work that well, I finally managed to get some people to play but since none of us have ever played I decided to take responcibility for dming
If you're remotely trepidatious, howtogm.guide is frequently recommended.
Thanks fam, Im gonna check it out some time
If you have a group of friends none of whom have played before... Someone has to step up and DM. Good on you for stepping up.
damn, respect my man. Lord knows I wouldn't have the guts to try and DM my first time playing! Hope it works out well for you :)
Thanks dude, I apreciate it
Thanks, Im making a few ideas on how to make the story
btw you don't happen to have a free spot do you? :3
Don't be too proud to take a pre-written adventure for your first rode. The assorted Starter Sets are literally written with this kind of scenario in mind.
Im sorry but it is an irl game
sadge, anyways gl in your first campaign!!
Also not the channel to solicit/organize games (see #find-a-game)
Thanks man, I really apreciate it
sorry my bad 🙏
For folks wanting to try DM'ing, we also have #dm-discussion to bounce ideas and get feedback from other DMs.
Cool, I think Im gonna check that out some time
Hey, i am new to dnd and do not know much of how to start or how it works. I do understand that you make characters, the dice tells you your success of what you want to do in the story. But like I said, I do not know how to start.

Those links should help!
I'll look at them
One last question for now, id experience points split between the party?
If you choose to use experience points, then yes. It's also acceptable to do levels by milestones, and just tell them when to take a level.
?tag new demo
That may help, too, tulip.
The DM decides how to level up, either through XP or milestone method.
Thanks, I apreciate all the help you give me
Wdym? 😅
That minigame can teach you how DnD works.
It's standalone.
Idk why I thought it’d take me like an hour to join a game
Some of these posts I’m seeing are like “ meet up in March” 😭
Trying to organize the schedules of multiple busy folks to sit and play a game for 3-4 hours (average) is a challenge.
That said, maybe check the other D&D servers posting in #looking-for-community as they may have pickup D&D games or games that asynchronous (e.g. play by text/post) so aligning schedules is less of an issue.
ty
If I play a game of dnd will the starter set with Miniature pieces and dice 🎲 and the essentials kit do justice for a one shot ?
Talking about stormwreck isle no spoilers yet
For sure. The Starter Set is good and one set of dice can suffice in a pinch. Just handing them around is how I got my start as well.
Ok so any official books beside PHB 2014 and 2024 are considered optional?
Honestly, all the books are optional given that the Free Rules are all you need to play
Ohh
And someone tells me there is some kind of party wombo combo attack
I have no idea what that means
Hi👋🏾
welcome!
Happy to be here! How are you?
Doing all right. If you're new to D&D we have #learn-to-play and chck the pinned messages for useful resources to help get you started.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel
Unfortunately we generally don't have time and bandwidth to teach folks D&D one on one but if you spend some time reviewing the previously mentioned resources (like the free basic rules) you can learn a lot

Cool! I've made a character. I'm dming people in the looking for channels to see if they'll let me join.
Is this party composition ok? GraveCleric, Ancestral guardian Barbarian, Champion fighter and Thief Rogue
What would be some cool multiclassing options for the barbarian?
Context matters but I don’t see anything wrong with it. If you’re new to D&D I’d suggest avoiding the complexity of multiclassing for now.
I’d check with #character-discussion or #optimization for more character build discussions
Thank you!
Maybe playing around with the new version of Conjure Minor Elementals.
I agree with UndyingNoob about multiclassing - the odds are that, until you understand what you expect to get from it on a mechanical level, the whole will be less than the sum of its parts.
Hello
is this 2014 or 2024?
2024
After character creation, is 18 and 15(on spearate characters) reasonable?
What do those numbers represent, exactly?
18 is only possible when rolled, so if your DM allows it and/or witnessed the roll, it's fine
Though unsure what you mean with the separate characters here?
18 is possible without rolled stats in 2014
custom lineage, then pick a half feat
Also just realized you have not specified character level either, so there's that too (:
What is "reasonable" depends a lot of thing here
I seem to have made a misstake there, I neglected to mention that I meant 18 and 15 in armor class
18 AC is entirely reasonable for a martial character, since it's chain + shield. (There are other ways to get it, but that's the simplest). 15 AC would be Leather Armor + 16 Dex, so also super reasonable.
(Studded Leather Armor)
Thank you so much, some of the players are using a character creation website so Im just making sure that they didnt accidentaly add multipliers multiple times
It's certainly possible that they could be messing up the calculations, but those numbers are within logical limits
Am I mis-remembering Leather as base 12 rather than base 11?
Yep, Leather is 11.
OK, fair.
I need a 99 emoji

I’m new to Dungeons & Dragons and I was wondering what’s a good starter set I should buy I’ve seen the starter set at like target that are like $15 but I don’t know if they just come with a book and dice
The latest Starter Set (the one with the blue dragon on the cover) has six dice, rules, and an adventure.
https://dndstore.wizards.com/us/en/product/811467/dd-starter-set-digital-plus-physical-bundle
48-page adventure booklet with everything you need to get started 32-page rulebook for playing characters of levels 1–3 5 ready-to-play characters, each with a character sheet 6 polyhedral game dice D&D Beyond digital copy of Dragons of Stormwreck Isle
So if I buy that, will I have to buy something separate to be able to play the game
The starter set has the bare bone basics for you to start. The Player's Handbook should be the first hardcover book you should get.
So what else should I buy if I get that set?
I need to eventually just make this a linkeable Google doc or similar, but:
- The Free Rules contains a decent-sized chunk of content, such that there is no reason to have to buy anything until you're more sure it's a hobby you want to engage in long-term.
- Especially if your entire group is now, there are two low-priced entry points. One is called the Starter Set; the other is called the Essentials Kit. Both come wiht a slimmed-down rulebook, a set of 4-5 pregenerated characters, a poster map (both maps show the same outdoor region that's nominally part of the Forgotten Realms), a full set of polyhedral dice (including 4d6 and 2d20 to cover for advantage and critical hits), and an adventure.
- The adventure in the Starter Set, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, is probably better structured for new GMs, but is relatively shorter, and will take characters from 1st to 4th level over about 3-4 sessions of play. The adventure in the Essentials Kit, Dragon of Icespire Peak, is a bit more "sandboxy", and will take characters into level 5 over as many as 8 or so sessions. The Essentials Kit used to come with codes to claim 3 more adventures on D&D Beyond that would take the part to ~level 13. I can't swear it still does.
As OldMan said, if you invest further after that, the Player's Handbook should be the first full-length product, either hardcover or digitally. Do note that, at present, physical book sales do not unlock the book on D&D Beyond.
The adventure in the Essentials Kit is set in the same geographic region as the hardcover adventure Phandelver and Below, which extends the adventure from the old Starter Set, and you can move pretty seamlessly between parts of Icespire Peak and Phandelver if you so choose.
Hello, I am a complete beginner, the only useful information I may have about the game is that I beat Baldur's gate 3, looking to get into and heard that it is possible to play a campaign solo, so I can learn the ropes and to hopefully get into DMing after to host games with my friends, can anyone help me out?

Hey folks please don't solicit/organize games in the discussion channels - it is off-topic and will be moderated.
Oh ok
Please take it to direct messages or use the LFG channles - see #find-a-game
Shi okay
Why though?
^
This channel is, by it's own description, for:
Ask about the basics of D&D and learn to play!
Basically helping new to D&D folks get started
We have useful resources in #learn-to-play and in the pinned messages here.
I have a question, i want to play a chronomacy wizard but i don't like the boring wize personality of a wizard does anyone have a tip on how to make a wizard have a more fun personality while still fitting a wizard
A crazy genius who invents an arcane clock
Class =/= personality
But would suggest asking in #character-discussion for tips on making a character!
Ok, thanks!
that is awsome
@kindred bough ayo hol'up
What?
Nah I just realised you were in this server
K
Did you play it before?
I did try to play with some friends irl and even tried to be the DM
I didn't play any yet, trying to understand most concepts but there is a lot of stuff and its pretty complicated and slightly annoying quite frankly, but it definitely will be pretty good once I get more used to the rules n' stuff and enter my first game probably
wheeze

Theres a lot more to it lol
Plz explain
The game is sometimes described as having three "pillars": Social encouters (or close to pure roleplay), exploration, and combat.
Different player types prefer one or another of these to different degrees. Different character classes can be more or less focused on one or another of them (though every class will have at least a few features that are centered on the combat part).
For example, I greatly prefer social interaction over exploration.
Combat I feel indifferently about
There are lots of ways to play D&D (often called "engaging" with it) depending on what you enjoy and focus on:
- Roleplay and storytelling
- The mechanics and rules
- Exploring the world your DM runs
- Combat and power fantasies
- And so on
For example, some people love to do what's called optimizing where you focus on making some aspect of your character (or your whole character) as good as possible
And you can also experiment with each and see what you like. I honestly encourage new players to try out as much as the game has to offer as you can.
Some people want to focus on exploring a particular narrative with their character such as some aspect of their backstory or seeking out a certain goal or status
There have been a few different bits of writing about player types over the years. The list from the current DMG lists the following 8:
- (Method) Actor
- Explorer
- Fighter
- Instigator
- Optimizer
- Problem-Solver
- Storyteller
- Socializer
I’ve been DMing for 8 years and have somehow never seen this list
So.. thanks Jeff! I’m not even the new player in this conversation and I just learned something!
This is from DMG 2024. Variations of this list, with more or fewer categories, have been around at least since Robin's Laws of Good Game Mastering.
Oh well thats why. I have a copy but I’ve been to busy to properly read that tome
I want to soon though.
(more in a bit; high-priority work thing0
Totally understand. Ping me when you continue explaining though.
Ginny Di did a pretty solid overview of the current DMG write-ups in early December: https://youtu.be/VoGVEUU8PRo?si=hthv6PITCdANOg4d
@manic token (and @lyric fjord ): No one person is exclusively a single player type. Taking myself as an example: I'm mostly a problem-solver, with strong streaks of Explorer and Storyteller. My wife has all of 2 sessions under her belt, but in watching the video above identified most strongly with the descriptions of the Fighter and the Actor, with some of the Socializer coming along for the ride.
Different resources have slightly different numbers and names for the groupings. The DMG2 from 4th Ed was another place that talked about player types/motivations.
