I an a level five bard snd from norway does anyone want to play with me
Look at the posts from folks looking for players in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
See #find-a-game for more information on how to use our Looking For Game channels
Should I start with d&d beyond or should I look for a d&d club in my area?
D&D Beyond is just a resource for managing your character and adventures. You’ll want to either find a local club in your area or start with #find-a-game if you want to look here.
And should I try online first? Or should I try joining a local club
Could do one or the other, or both. Depends on what you're interested in and comfortable with
Yeah, I'd try both. One because spreading your net wide helps to actually find a group and two because you won't know which you prefer until you try it
I personally will play online but much prefer in person, while other people are the opposite
Any tips for a rogue?
Understanding how sneak attack and your cunning actions work is 75% of the battle.
For example, you don't need to be sneaking or have advantage to get your sneak attack - an ally being next to the enemy you're targeting is enough.
Then do I need more stuff if I join a local club? Or is it the same online

would p2e be too overwhelming to jump into vs 5e?
They're different games and this server is just for D&D, so I can't speak to Pathfinder
You'd have to learn the rules for that game if you want to play it
ohhhh i see, gotcha, thanks 🙂
Haii
ok making my first character
when I use Beyond it says for a level 4 cleric i can only pick life domain
how do I unlock other domains?
Unless you own other books on DnDBeyond, you only have access to the materials in the free rules or SRD
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
You can play D&D fine with just the free materials but if you want additional options and rules, you'll either need to buy the book on DnDBeyond, be in a DnDBeyond campaign with content sharing enabled and someone in that campaign has that book, or use the homebrew tools to recreate materials from physical books you have.
Sup, I'm extremely new to dnd I have almost no knowledge, I just heard abt it a lot and it seems very interesting, can somebody maybe help me get started out like I see many people "making" characters, is it just a description of your character or is there other stuff I am missing?

The free rules have the steps to creating a character sheet (see link in the bot post)
Oh okay, ty!
I'm brand new and creating a character, they told me to make a level 4 character and the dndbeyond website really helps you create one.
A level 4? I mean, instructions are instruction but throwing that out there randomly without any explanation seems pretty confusing no? Also ty for the website, I will go try it out
Yea I have no clue honestly. I am making a cleric that is designed on helping others. Should be fun and engaging I would think, tho I wish I could see the other domains.
I'd recommend trying out the stuff in the free materials first to see if you like the game or not before investing money into books, etc. Yes the books add more to the game but you can have a really great game even with the more limited options that only the free rules provide.
Yea I agree, I am glad I can bring Guidance along, since in BG3 that was a great spell to help pass Checks.
I think I will just go for the basic like a warrior or something
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
That said - play what sounds fun for you and will work well for the group and game that you join.
I am having a tough time understanding how many prepared spells I am allowed to bring.
Its very clear to me I will need to learn lotsa terms from that sentence alone
The website is doing an amazing job, but doesn't seem to let me in on that knowledge. I am a level 4 Cleric Life domain.
The Cleric Features table should explain it: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/2190877-cleric
Oh wait I get 4 cantrips and 7 spells right?
Yep I just saw this, thanks. I think I will read a little into those tables as well.
Do you guys have any suggestions on a level 4 Cleric Life Domain maybe would make things fun?
I should have Healing Word tho right?
I think I want Guiding Bolt as well LOL
Report back though, it helps to discuss it all here honestly. These people seem to know a lot as well.
Yeah, I think I will just take note of things that seem important and gonna probably come tomorrow and ask here about them
Ohhh
Well the level stuff is actually pretty simple
Yea the website is insanely well done in helping what you are able to do and not do.
You just often start at lvl 1 with a character, and sometimes the DM can make you start at a higher level, did like a dm in a game youre in told you to be level 4?
So a friend of mine was like would you like to do this beginner trial thing that his friend is running from their church everyone there is somewhat new and we all have to make a new character at level 4. That is all the information I got, now im sitting here trying to create a lvl 4 cleric for tomorrow!!! LOL So I play tomorrow.
Which is kindof scary since, I have never really roleplayed a character before.
I guess the hard part is to start from somewhere since there are many stuff
E
Yea at first I was thinking about making a over zealous cleric know it all, but he is actually terrible at everything LOL
But my knowledge in this game is to small to know how to really flesh that out.
Well, I am not used to dnd but I did roleplay many characters before in other roleplay games
Oh so you are mucho more advanced then me.
Not really, the kind of roleplaying I had done is largely different from this
See this spell sounds fun. Command. You speak a one-word command to a creature you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or follow the command on its next turn. Choose the command from these options:
Approach. The target moves toward you by the shortest and most direct route, ending its turn if it moves within 5 feet of you.
Drop. The target drops whatever it is holding and then ends its turn.
Flee. The target spends its turn moving away from you by the fastest available means.
Grovel. The target has the Prone condition and then ends its turn.
Halt. On its turn, the target doesn’t move and takes no action or Bonus Action.
Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. You can affect one additional creature for each spell slot level above 1.
So I guess I'll bring it.
Same for me, like I said before, I feel like the hard part is to start from somewhere and not to feel too much pressure, it probably can take out the joy from it and make it feel like a homework or something
That's insanely cool
Well, I'll see you later then, its almost midnight where I live
Have fun, take it easy!
hi : D

I'm alright, got any questions for me?

but due to a messy dm, and the second campaign having unserious/toxic online players
i kind of disliked the experience
but since baldurs gate, ive been wanting to come back to it
can i friend/dm u? uve been cool
I dont mind a DM
Yes thats what i meant too
Haha
For Bard's jack of all trades does all skills get a half proficiency if I'm not proficiency? Or is it only skills I have +0 modifier on?
It cares about proficency, not the modifier
Okay, and do saving throws count?
They are not skills
Okay 👌
Thanks
Hey all, I’m playing my first ever campaign which is a pre-written campaign (Stormwreck Isle).
I’m playing as the halfling rogue with a criminal background but I’m finding the combat pretty stale. It seems that my only option in combat is sneak attack and then dagger/shortbow for the rest of the battle.
I know that I should focus on more creative solutions - which I have, for example: I used my 1000 ball bearings to trip some enemies and force them prone, used my rope to tie up a boss and set them alight using my oil (which worked thanks to some very lucky critical successes) etc. - but I’m running out of ideas now and the dagger/short bow spam is pretty boring. During my team’s last fight, I found myself wandering off exploring other areas whilst they fought, as there was not much I could do to help…
Any tips on how to improve my usefulness during combat?
I like the idea of using sneak/sleight of hand to put explosives or poisons into people’s pockets but I haven’t come across anything like that yet…
Creative stuff can be fun yeah but the classical Rogue combat loop is getting sneak attack off every turn. If your game uses the optional flanking rules see if you can position yourself such that you and your allies get advantage.
Rogue can get very very good if you can get off a second sneak attack per round via your reaction, such as via a qualifying opportunity attack
Also, sneak attack isnt a once per fight thing
You should be sneak attacking every turn
How can I sneak attack every turn? Would that be a level 2 ability? As sneak attack uses 1 action and then hide uses 1 action?
You dont have to be hidden to get sneak attack
Thats your main misunderstanding
Sneak attack is given anytime you have advantage, OR when you have an ally within 5ft of the target
And you dont sneak attack
You make an attack with a weapon, and if those criteria are true, you gain sneak attack damage as bonus damage
Omg this is life changing haha! My whole group is playing this as their first campaign so none of us had picked this up! Thank you so much. This will definitely help with my damage output!
Besides utilising sneak attack - have we got any fun or creative ideas that a halfling rogue might use during combat?
Level 1 is going to be mostly simple
When you get cunning actions and level up more, you will have a lot more you can do
But at its core rogue is running around trying to sneak attack
Also, are you playing 2024 or 2014 rogue?
I’m currently level 2 🙂
2014 rogue - is there anything useful there or would 2024 have been better?
This is correct ☺️
2024 generally gives a lot more to martial classes to do/benefit from
Weapon mastery from 2024 gives Rogues a lot of options
Darn that’s a shame!

If you're all new, I might suggest that you point the GM to the fact that the core rules have gotten an update/polish beginning in September and ask if the whole group can switch over since new stuff going forward will be based on (and balanced around) those instead.
It's the "D&D Free Rules" link in the bot post immediately above me.
Thank you so much - that is really handy!
Which pre-written campaigns are recommended after completing Dragons of Stormwreck Isle?
My group would like to complete a couple of pre-made campaigns before the DM designs their own!
If I remember correctly, there are 2 on D&D Beyond that are meant to follow it directly
That’s really interesting - do you have any idea what they are called or how I could find them? I’ve just don’t a quick google search to no avail 😦
Hearing a lot about LMOP - may be worth a go!:)

Hey, I'm new to D&D iv always thought it was cool kinda like Elden ring but not Elden ring, and none of my friends are as nerdy as me to be interested in D&D I was wondering if anyone could teach me how to play and possibly I could join a campaign 😁
how do i make my character ?

Hi, hope this is the correct Channel to ask:
I am somewhat lost with my Character creation for my first Campaign.
I want to play a Paladin and wanted him to follow one of the Dwarven Gods (Silverbeard).
But I can't for the life of me figure out if this god (or the Dwarf gods in general) are part of the Books we have available for the campaign.
Can anyone tell me which book he (and the rest of the Dwarf Pantheon) belongs to?
So, that would be up to the setting and world that your DM chooses to use. Specific gods arent really in the game by default, and a paladin doesnt even need to follow a god
It ends up being a question you ask your DM of what gods they have in their world
And if your DM is unsure and is just using a premade setting like forgotten realms, just google forgotten realms gods/dwarf gods
#character-discussion can help you out once you have a grasp on the rules, the bot posts in here and dnd beyond can get you that far
Hey guys I am a fairly new DM I have run
White plume mountain against the cult of the reptile god
But I have found that I have a weakness in my NPC roleplay in towns
now I wanna do better for my players
Can you guys give me some recommendations as to how to make that part of the world come alive?
YouTube's highly appreciated
Sounds like a #dnd-elder-editions adventure, there might be some tips in this playlist for improving your NPCs https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05OupYIohJFqY1UIKMEGWNA2&si=0p-WhxZhnqNeJyGb
I do like the legacy module structure
But is more of a general Improvement question
Al @fresh fable really cool link thx
Hi all I'm new to dungeons and dragons I really like the game tho I have never played it I have play baldur's gate 3

huh i didnt know we had that thats neat
Is it possible for small characters to wield a heavy weapon like a great sword?
depends what version you play
But what version tho?
Ah ok
kobolds are counted as dragons?
Kobolds are humanoids
What is the most easiest and hardest classes to learn?
Generally spellcasters can be bit more difficult to get a hang of at first, due to having their spells be on a resource system (spell slots) to manage, and having a lot of choise to pick spells from, while martial classes like Fighter or Barbarian are more simple and straight forward
theyre all fine though tbh
How do you use artificer??
Absolutely!
The best class to learn is the one you find interest in learning
artificers can do pretty much anything tbh
I mean you can make almost anything with artificer right?
kinda
hello, so i come from pathfinder 1e mainly, but dnd is a bit simpler, so wondering if the simplicity can sorta railroad the best builds or is it still open to a lot of variety?
Hello I have been on a few dungeons and dragons server but looking it find more. I am fairly new to playing d&d only played for 3 years on and off
ive heard pathfinder is actually much more railroaded
it certainly can be, however there are a lot of crazy ways to make odd things strong, and if your not bothered about complete min max then thheres tonnes thats good for doing somewhat wierd combos/builds
And does someone have advice for what I should buy?
you just have to go hard on theorycraft
I ment like stuff such dice I know but what else?
The easiest class to learn is the one you are most interesed in.
Nope. While they’re able to make certain magic items there is a specific list that they are allowed to pull from. Compared to everything else in the game it’s fairly small, but the items in there are useful.
Whats a very good open world based module?
It really depends on what you mean. The whole point of a module is to guide you through an experience. There are plenty of modules with large worlds that you can explore and stories that are non-linear, but I don't think a module can ever really give you "true freedom." A module is, by its very nature, a set of guide rails.
Do clerics have any Revival spells at level 4?
No. The lowest level spell that can bring the dead back to life is Revivify, which is a 3rd level spell, meaning clerics get it at level 5
O.O Thank you haha
A cleric that is level 4 or lower could potentially get a spell scroll of revivify though, which would allow them to cast the spell even if they are too low of a level
(If they're lucky enough to successfully use the scroll!)
Then the larger world ones
Im so new, I just made a Cleric level 4 cause that is what I was told make a level 4 character lol
I went with Ilmater though, he seems legit.
dang i thought i was unique going for an ilmater paladin lmao
Well, most of the modules with large worlds are higher level adventures. If you want to start at level 1, most of the adventures are much smaller scale. I'd say the adventure that's probably the closest to what you are looking for is the one included in Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse. That module starts at level 3 and goes to level 20 iirc. And it lets you explore multiple different planes of existance
Ilmater is a great choice for any character 🙂
Alright thanks
Yeah I guess I thought it was less chosen because of the violence being a last resort.
I've been reading up on the lore of Ilmater and the church of Ilmater and plan on memorizing the prayer in the "Prayers of Repent" book. and also memorizing just a few short personal prayers for certain situations. also they have just a couple saying that I wanna throw in my rp for it to really feel authentic
That's awesome!
RP is how you bring your character to life and it sounds like you're already putting in fantastic work.
Dungeon of the Mad Mage is also semi-sandboxy, in that there's a lot of stuff a party isn't likely to explore on a first run-through.
Two good ones that start at low level and don't throw too big of a world at you are Rime of the Frostmaiden and Curse of Strahd
I'd also add that open world adventures are harder to prep for and may feel overwhelming for new players and dms.
How do i play as a dm as a zombie or any other monster. we got the starter set for storm wreck isles and when my player encountered 3 zombies i don't get the zombies attack damage and any time i tried to attack the player as a zombie his ac is always higher. I am confused please help. The stat block is confusing. Btw i am a new dm.
The "+3 to hit" means you'd add +3 to their attack roll.
Which means for a player with an AC of 15, you'd need to roll at least a 12 to hit.
So a zombie is simply more likely to miss than hit.
(Which is fine because they're not meant to be deadly in small numbers.)
Hello guys ! I started recently to play D&D with some friends of mine. And I am role playing a wizard. Yet, as a newby, I would have to ask you some advices on how to play my character especially according to the fact than I am a wizard. What things could I do in order to act like a wizard ? I've been told that, okay Wizard cast spells but there's more about it
Do you have any actual play sessions under your belt yet?
I played an initiation (but just to learn the game, not with my character) and played a single session of about 2h30
Wizards are people, so they can be varied. But wizards study magic, so you can start there. Why did your character study magic? (Or if they didn't study it, what is their relationship to it?) Do they have any particular fascinations or specializations with magic? Are they young? Old? #character-discussion is the better spot to dive in more to these sorts of considerations!
Okay, thank you a lot ! I'll head on this path and think about it, in the dedicated channel of course
hey guys where might i be able to find a beginner online campaign group

Hii, sorry I wasn't on Discord. I really don't know anything yet. Maybe the basics?xD
No problem, well the basics on how to play would be better if you find a dungeon master to teach you. However I can tell a overview about it. So dnd is a ttrpg or a "Table Top Role Playing Game" where you go on missions and go adventuring. A good example would be Lord of The Rings where you have a bunch off characters going on a mission with all off them having different abilities and personalities
The link above your message covers all the basics 🙂
Aa thank you :DD
Is there any character builders out there that doesn't charge you to add like all the options?
No, any options outside of the free rules are paid.
The options are licensed products created in order to be sold, unfortunately
If you would like to use paid options but can’t otherwise purchase them yourself, and don’t mind filling out a sheet manually, local libraries often have 5e books available to browse & check out
Oh wow, I didn't know that. I always thought it was a game in which people came together and made stories up and kindof was community driven.
This is clutch thanks!
No, its commercialized and made by a company
(the community is great, but the IP is held by WotC)
What is it you purchase to unlock all of it then? The starter set or something?
oh goodness... i was afraid you were going to say that LOL
There are many different books availabile right now since this version of D&D has been produced for 10 years so far
So its multiple purchases then
The main one will be the Players Handbook
Content is packaged into various books. The starter set just has a set of dice, an adventure, and some premade characters (and the free rules)
Ahhh ok yea I just need a starting location.
What dice should I bring, tonight is my first game ever.
1 20 sided dice?
A set of gaming dice is prefered
1 d4/6/8/10/12/20/100
With some of them being more optional
gotcha, hmm love how I was given no information this is going to be insane I can already tell.
And some of them you want multiples of
You can also see if you can use a digital dice roller. Even google has their own if you search up “roll 1d4” or similar
If you are playing IRL, then all of this doesnt matter as much
The DM will typically have rulebooks and dice to share
Yea I am playing IRL from a guy who is teaching a bunch of us, he has been playing for like 25 years.
Yeah then dont worry about supplies and rulebooks
So yea, maybe as he organized this knowing we are all new went ahead and made some preparations.
As a DM ive never shown up to a game without my rule books and at least 8 sets of dice
Well im hoping 25 years of experience he landed somewhere near your thinking.
I totally didn't order like 8 sets of dice recently
I think I will have fun no matter what tho, I do have the beyond app with my character made, i was just sad, I couldn't dig deeper into the character customization.
Yea why would you do that am i right? LOL I want some dice now.
Customize its story, not its mechanics 🙂
5 of them are mini sets but 3 of them are normal sets i found neat, got them off a cheap site so shippings taking some time and they havent arrived yet though
I have a lot of single sets of dice, but i also just bought a bag of dice for DMing
Toss the bag on the table and say have at it
Creating a character is a lot, DM's must have to spend so much time creating story, you musth ave to love it right?
I dont plan on dming any time soon i just like the math rocks
maybe next year ill DM
get some actual playing experience first
I know im locked in for sessions on saturdays in person so im at least gonna have that much experience
Yea, I looked at some starter set that comes with a bunch of items and npc's and I was like how in the world do these DM's do this, like a love with story telling and being flexible is a must.
I will report back with how it goes, thi sis a one off story whatever that means.
I think our group will come together solve something I assume and part ways.
last saturday was supposed to be session 0 but nobody else showed up, I did learn that parts of the campaign were made the day prior or day of at like 2 am but thats about it so far that i know
Dang, you gonna have some fun hopefully when it starts up.
last saturday was the week of new years and im basically the only one who was keeping in touch the entire time, they are putting the advert out again this week hoping enough people show up though
thinking of playing an eldritch knight of some sort but idk yet im thinking still

I just searched #looking-for-players and found several from the past few days.
Otherwise, you can look for games elsewhere besides this server. I have a list of options here.
chat my dice finally arrived
noice
all except the metal dice are in the bag now, the mini metal dice came with a d20 keychain holder so im tempted to put them on my keychain
You will want some kind of pad/tray/something for the metal dice to avoid damage to the table.
its a very mini set
Still.
Sent
they are quite tiny
Going to the store will send it next to a regular d20 and another mini d20 for scale
Hello

Yo my friend is a level 4 druid of the land can he transform into anything ?
No - only what is allowed by their specific druid subclass and based on their druid level. It should be listed in the class information.
when creating a character can you set your proficiencies ?
you get them from your class/race/background and whatnot
usually you have a list to choose between for each feature
yeah, you can't tweak them though?
Proficiency bonus comes from your character level
What your character is proficient in comes from, as others noted, your class/background/species.
This is detailed in the class description
So to answer your question - you don't tweak them on your own
okay so if i keep doing a deception move, telling a lie, convincing people to do things with my disguise, then when i level up do i have skill points to allocate or does it increase on it's own?
and does the proficiency increase faster if i keep doing that skill or action?
No, you dont get skill points or increase proficiencies faster
The only way your skills go up is if said attribute goes up, or when you level up and your proficiency modifier goes up
so if i want to build a character who uses charisma in deception then instead of picking an elf i would pick the right classes that provide extra boost to the deception skill already
then it's the class
There are a lot of ways to get proficency in deception
where can i find information about this?
Your background, your class, feats, class features all can give you proficiencies
Some races can give you proficiencies
I would recommend making a character and seeing what you get to choose at each step
Its gonna be hard to try and explain without you trying it yourself
anyone know if there are ever text based campaigns? or if there is a good place to look.
You would be looking for play by post (pbp) campaigns
They come up often ? or know how to get into one ?
Hello
Wsp, i've been in this discord for a bit wanting to play but have still yet to ever play a game of dnd in my life (my fault bc my schedule is too busy ;;)
SAME being busy in college does NOT help 🥲
In one attempt I messed up making a character so badly that the guy had to cancel the one-shot. I've since actually read the book
Jello! I am mostly new to DND. I played a game once years ago and I understand the general gist of it, however, there isn't much I understand or know, not enough to play a whole game with people.

What is the difference between intelligence and wisdom?
Think of intelligence like rote knowledge and facts, and wisdom like understanding how the world works
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is not adding it to a fruit salad
Ability Stats With Tomato
Strength is being able to crush a tomato.
Dexterity is being able to dodge a tomato.
Constitution is being able to eat a bad tomato.
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad.
Charisma is being able to sell a tomato based fruit salad.
Hey, just needing some advice. I’m a VERRRRRRYYYY new player, as in never played a game before except for a little of BG3. No clue what different types of games are, but I have a character that I just made. I’m a bit anxious to find a group to join, because I have lots of commitments on the weekdays. I’m just worried I won’t be able to commit or my parents won’t approve of me playing online with strangers. Any words of wisdom to ease my worries?
Honestly not much I can say to ease your worries unfortunately
Scheduling is one of the toughest problems D&D groups run into, and not having a consistent day free can be real rough
🥲
And parents not wanting you to talk with strangers is kidna up to them 😅
Maybe I’ll just wait until I’m a bit older
Yeah, unfortunately I would tend to agree that being a young girl on the internet can open yourself up to creeps
scheduling will never not be a nightmare for you, sadly, but once you accept that it's not so bad
Is it really that bad?
You can try to alleviate it by playing in a campaign with no set time/day that is flexible, but that has issues with games getting played too
Or something like play by post, but thats a very different form of D&D
And definitely isnt everyones cup of tea
On average the best advice is getting a day and trying to stick to it so that everyone knows to try to keep their schedule open on exactly that day instead of being in limbo trying to find something that works for everyone
it's true
does anyone awake know what I need to do to post on #looking-for-dm ?
Did you read #find-a-game
don't you just type looking for DM with a / in front of it?
Play by post could be the safest bet
What’s play by post
Play by post also avoids the issue of talking to strangers for your parents
Type /looking in any channel to activate the bot
You play by chatting through text
nope i guess i didn't
I've done it for a few years it can be pretty fun if everybody's active
That sounds way more my cup of tea to be honest, so I don’t have to feel embarrassed rping out loud
I actually turned a campaign I was running into PBP for a while when we couldnt regularly schedule games
Im sure its enjoyable, but I do hope you get to enjoy the fun of tried and true D&D too, theres nothing quite like it
I'd personally consider it true dnd but I get what you mean
I think pbp is better if you're interested in heavier RP and character writing but don't want to use your voice to do it
totally get the embarassment thing
Yeah, i think its mainly just the social dynamic that changes, but that social dynamic is one of the parts of D&D that I love the most
Are there ways to find a group like that on here?
Keep an eye on #looking-for-players
Maybe I’ll just do pbp until I’m more comfortable
Look for PBP or Play-by-post as keywords in the description
you could also make a looking for dm post with your preferences and other info in it
see if you get lucky and get picked up by somebody
How do I post in looking for a dm? I’ve added the channel but it just redirects me
Is there something I have to press?
This. You can do it here even
Let’s not gatekeep, please.
You could also check out the DnDBeyond forums, there is quite an active php section
If you want to expand your search outside this server, you can find play-by-post games on the D&D Beyond forums, as mentioned, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search “PBP” or “play by post” as keywords using Discord's Explore function!
so looking for some insight on to peoples opinions 🙂
ill be starting in a new campaign soon with a part of 5 (this includes me) atm we have:
Fighter
Barbarian
Ranger
Druid (probably)
i was thinking of making a spell caster for my character since the other classes arent as heavy in that department besides maybe the druid. Initially i thought maybe a bard for the utility but then figured i would go with a wizard or sorcerer.
so my question is what would people suggest? i am thinking of a wizard due to being able to have more spell options to choose from allowing for more utility and versatility due to the type of group i will be with. Id love to hear other peoples opinions.
(my apologies if this is not the right channel to ask this question in)
sorcerer seems limited in spell options for that type of group no? i like the idea of both though!
thanks for the insight
My friend is wonder if dark urge is a character that’s been in dnd for awhile and are they playable?
The Dark Urge is a canon character to the Forgotten Realms universe. They existed in some D&D comic books before Baldur's Gate 3 came out. As far as if they are playable, its a bit of a taboo to play an existing character in your games. No one can stop you (except the DM) if you really wanted to do it, but the spirit of D&D is more about creating your own character and telling your own story
Hello, is there a channel for one shot campaigns?
No, this is for helping newcomers, and we don't host games on the server
Check out the LFG channels to find games, lot of which are one-shots #find-a-game
I think shes thinking more about the dark urge side to roleplay then the character themselves
Hi everyone I was wondering how I can join a group for dnd, I am new to this style of it and have only had a dnd type of experience in a Minecraft server

Play by post as discussed is an option to
so I have a question
so when you subscribe for $2.17 or w/e after tax. the cosmetic dice. How do you change the look of the dice? rn mine is black and red.
I assuming you're referring to the digital dice on D&D Beyond?
Go to your Collections > My Dice to select which digital dice set to use.
yes i mean that. thx!!
On D&D Beyond, you go to the "Collections" tab at the top of the screen, and navigate to the "My Dice" page from there. On the My Dice page, you can select any of your dice sets by clicking on them
Top right under my profile I assume.
no. Its on the bottom ribbon. Collections / Game Rules / Sources etc
Oh man, I didn't even notice. Welcome back Clouds!
Is dnd a board game
It's a tabletop game. So it's originally played around a table like a board game is, but it doesn't use an actual board.
Plenty of games are played over voice chat online nowadays, though
Played in-person, it can use a gridded map and miniatures, but that's not a requirement. Some groups are perfectly happy using "Theater of the Mind".
Is dungeon adventure in alexa dnd?
I don't know what that is, but probably not.
Is there any rules to it?
Rules for what?
Dnd
D&D is mostly rules.
Are there universal rules
The rules to D&D are universal.
Check out the free Free Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Thanks
Just like any game, there are universal rules... but it's YOUR game, play it how YOU want.
I don't know if recommending new players to get into a mindset where the rules don't matter is the best choice.
Yes, understand the rules before you start to consider homebrewing.
And welcome back, Mr. Clouds.
Hi, I have a question about the new version of the 2024 PHB. How does Weapon Mastery Properties work? Do I attach up the effects I select for my weapons or does each weapon have its own set of specific properties?
Each weapon has a set of properties and mastery associated with it.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#MasteryProperties
Okay, that helps a lot. But how do I know the property type for each weapon? For example: what are the effects of Maul or a BattleAxe?
You read the weapon item and reference the weapon property
The list of weapons identifies the mastery property for each weapon.
No it’s not a board game so to speak,
Ttrpgs are improv games where you play a character and go through an adventure. There is no winning, just an experience to make story’s and so forth. There can be maps and minis, there are dice and rules.
I ended up finding it, thanks for the help
The weapons table lists each weapon's property and mastery

Hello, I’m new and I was wondering if there was somewhere I could go to find a party to join or something similar
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

hi, I am new and want to ask, when joining a party what are the things that are expected to be prepared before the adventure starts, from the players other than the character sheet, and the DM other then the adventure?
mostly in an online setting
so im making another character. why dont i find Artificer among classes?
on the website?
what website are you using?
dnd beyond
you need to buy the sourcebooks to access most of the options on dndbeyond
i think artíficer isn't from the phb so that's why it's not on there
the internet says its on expanded rules
which is better for hoosing starting points
Roll Dice/Buy Points or Standard Array?
what book is artificer from?
dndbeyond only allows like half the options of the regular php of you don't pay i think
I did the Subscription today. so Im paying monthly.
it was introduced with eberron I'm pretty sure
i think you still need to buy the sourcebooks
oh i found an article on dnd beyound that says its in Tasha AND Ebberron's
so I guess I have to pick a book?
yeah probably
are the pictures only in the physical copy? or is it in the digital too?
what do you mean by pictures?
well if you buy a physical book it comes with the neat drawn pics inside, right? I love the drawn pics.
I just wonder if when you buy the digital copy you get the pictures too. I just really love those drawings.
there are probably pictures in the digital copy
Can anyone do a session with me? I have a character and everything
im just curious, is it a rogue
Yeah I figured it out alr
is there some place one could find class features by level with descriptions on what they do? Extra points if it's printable as well
Anything not in the free rules/SRD is paid material so at some level you’ll need to buy the book(s) that have it.
the 2014 srd includes every class that isnt artificer but if you want anything else yeah youll need books
well I do have the 2024 player's handbook physically but I would like to give those pages with the class features to my players (I'm a first time dm running for first time players) so they don't have to keep asking me what they can do during combat etc
Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
you’d have to make them yourself, any content like that online is piracy because most classes arent available for free
what type of armor can Sorcerer wear? IE light, med, heavy?
None by default. You see this here in the core sorcerer traits:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Sorcerer
so then what can i do about defense?
Mage armour, shield spell, natural armour from a race like tortle,
Rely on spells, such as mage armor, invest in dexterity to raise your AC, stay in the backlines.
Draconic sorcerer gets a bonus to AC
well im a dragon race. so I hope theres some Def there
Dragonborn?
oh sorry!! Draconic race.
Dragonborn is the draconic race from the PHB
You'll get a damage resistance from dragonborn, so that is sort of a defense.
so I am guessing the color is all up to the player choice?
You've guessed right
It was either Red or Gold!!
In both cases, you'd be resistant to fire damage and your breath weapon also produces fire.
Ya thats what the Character sheet says on the website!!
Resistance means you take half damage.
But yeah, in either case, sorcerers typically aren't the most sturdy of classes, so you're probably better of leaving the actual melee combat to your barbarian/paladin/fighter/monk etc.
Are Clerics good?
In what way?
there are also feats that give you armor proficiency although theyre generally not very good
yeah
well say a party doesnt have a healer class, but you stil want to do dmg. I just dont want to be a 1 hit wonder.
Meaning like all Im good for is healing/resing. and my dmg is poop
healing really isnt needed in dnd
Cleric are still good at damage
I like being well balanced.
Oh yeah, that would work for sure. Druid is also a good mixed healing/damage class.
better, dare i say
Paladin too, if you want more martial prowess with your healing.
I mean Im sure they can tank good too. Altho I might be thinking way too much like WoW!! unfortunately I did play WoW for way too many years.
Stupid world of warcraft!!
Ya I know DnD came waaaay before WoW ever came along.
I know the pain. The two games are quite different though, so try to assume that there aren't going to be a lot of overlaps.
Tanking (as established by WoW) doesn't exist in dnd.
I looked in the Homebrew and saw Blood Deathknight and Frost DK. I looked at the spells and said, they operate the SAME WAY!! haha!!
Homebrew makes a lot of claims. Most of them worth squinting hard at.
id say avoid getting into homebrew until you've been playing the game for a little while, its very easy to break things
Tanking has a different meaning in DnD it just means you have a lot of hp as there is not a lot of ways to draw aggro
Ya I noticed tanking dont mean much here.
theres a lot of ideas in the wider community that arent really supported by game mechanics
I joked with a friend in discord. I said so Elderich Blast is like pointing a finger gun and saying, BANG!! Out pops a green fireball!! He said, Well ya if you want it to be.
yeah eblast is pretty good
I mean IG if thats the way I want to RP it wiff finger guns and green fireballs
so what stat does Sorc rely on
I think Char
Yup, charisma is their spellcasting ability. Constitution can also be really helpful for generally staying alive and keeping concentration on spells that require it.
If you would like to bump your AC a bit, also consider dexterity as a third choice.
in my character sheet how do i change my character's gender?
On dndbeyond?
Ya
If you go to the character editor to the second tab background scroll down and you should see weight height gender etc
yo
hi
Hi all, completely new to D&D (outside of playing BG3) and wanting to know recommendations for best ways to learn the game/rules and suggestions on how to find any online/virtual tabletop game sessions?

I’m designing a new character for my next campaign based on Lae’zel from BG3.
As a fighter I would have high strength and gain proficiency in melee.
What modifiers do I add to my d20 to see if I hit vs which modifiers do I add to the die that decides damage?
Depends on the weapon you use. If you are building with high strength i would use a strength based weapon versus say finesse which can use dex.
Therefore you would add your strength modifier to both the attack and damage.
With a weapon you are proficient in, you also add your proficiency bonus to hit but not to the damage
Thank you!
Where can I find info on strength based weapons? I have the player’s handbook but the weapon section doesn’t refer to strength based weapons.
It does say that finesse can use either dex or strength modifiers - but it may be that my handbook is out of date?
That's in the Properties section of the Weapons chapter: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#Properties
Thank you!
hello, I'm trying to figure what would be the preferred first way to play D&D, i own the 2014 starter set and the essentials set i read the players hand book included in the 2014 set, I'd like to try the game out as a player would it be best to look for group doing either of those campaigns or should i look for a "homebrew" for my first time playing, also I've been having a hard time trying to find groups IRL does anyone have suggestions where i could try to find a DM. Thank you
If you're committed to in-person, I'd look for groups at a hobby store, library, or local-focused social media (NextDoor, a local subreddit, or similar).
@harsh fjord has a fabulous list of resources for on-line play linked in their bio.
(It's not just for online play, but I appreciate the shout!)
Credit where credit's due, my fellow netizen.
thank you, i'm open to either online or in-person mostly curious to try the game
Hiiii, I just really like playing dnd I'm playing in a couple campaigns irl currently. I'm still trying to figure out discord and looking for a community I can get involved in and chat about my favorite hobby

is there a "looking for players" channel on this server
Yep. You can find instructions for using those channels in #find-a-game. If you can't see the channels, visit id:browse or id:customize!
Hey everyone, this may be the wrong chat, but random question: what do you believe the Ranger class is? It's for a project of mine If you could please give it to me in a sentence, yk? For example: The Fighter is the most martially and tactically adept warrior in a fight. No wrong answers, and PLEASE reply to me if you want to answer this question.
quick question: does the feat Skilled let me choose, for example, 1 tool and 2 skills, or i have to choose only 3 spells or 3 tools?
2014 Skilled says any combination of three skills or tools, so you could do 2 skills 1 tool, 2 tools 1 skill, or 3 either!
Assuming you're referring to the updated Origin Feat, Skilled, then yes. You can mix and match
i joined a campaign for the shattered obelisk, i don't have the 2014 player handbook can someone help run me down on the important stuff i should know for the first session 🙂

That's probably #dnd-discussion since this channel is more for people getting acquainted with game basics. And without specific info about the project, I imagine folks will be less likely to respond.
Gochu gochu, my mistake. It's just that there was an already existing conversation and I didn't want to interrupt the flow. I'll see myself out lmao

Hi, I’m new to D&D. I would like to learn how to play. I got the starter set and essentials kit. Reading through it. It’s quite overwhelming and not sure if I can start solo or how to even begin learning.
Welcome! To both of you. The bot post above has some great resources that can help get you started
D&D is meant to be played as a group. You typically have 1 DM and 3-6 players. It doesn’t really work solo
I'm new and want a group so we can play together
You can use a digital character sheet, such as on D&D Beyond, or download a PDF one.
Fillable Character Sheet PDFs: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Have you read the Free Rules yet on how to create a character?
Free Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Read up on the relevant rules, chill out here and chat, take a look at #looking-for-players when you feel ready.
Dang! Can you play with two people. I want to try and get my gf into the game.
It's doable but not with most adventures.
Can you? Sure, but it's not recommended.
There are some dedicated one-on-one adventures.
Dragons of Icespire Peak has help for 1 DM 1 Player games
You can use sidekicks to fill in the missing roles, such as healer or expert (but this goes beyond the premise of this channel).
I'd read through https://dndduet.com/ for info about one-on-one (AKA duet) play.
Or look to get into a game together as players.
I'm tryimg to get back into playing more
hello there, i have no idea of even the basics of dnd

Shoud I get the PHB on DnD beyond or as a physical copy?
It all depends how you'll use it.
Remember you don't really own the digital version. Think of it as leasing the product.
How do I find people to play with on here I haven’t played in a long time

Thank you. I am starting my first campaign as a player and thought it would be good to have. Unsure what edition to get though
I own both physical and digital. Physical guarantees it'll be mine for decades while digital is limited to whenever WotC decides to host it.
Hello I'm new to the dnd world nice to meet you all
I have a few characters that I've created on the 5e character sheet for dnd
Welcome! Sounds like you've taken some good first steps then
I have to ask, because you phrased that a little strangely, did you read through the free rules and follow the correct process for creating your character sheet, or did you just fill in the boxes with what seemed appropriate to you?
I read the rules and did a little research on which path would be good for that character and went from there
If you'd like I can send ss of my characters to you in a dm if you'd like?
That's ok. If you'd like to have other people review your character sheet, you can post it in #character-discussion. I just wanted to ask, because a lot of newcomers like to jump straight into creating their character, before they understand the process for doing so. If you read through a bit of the rules beforehand, you should be good.
Ok
My brother got me interested in to dnd and they suggested I used the 5e character sheet but I also have a starter box that I got from a local game store with dnd rules
How do I show my character sheet in the discussion?
If you made it on D&D Beyond, there's a share button on the site/app. If you made it some other way, you can take a photo/screenshot and upload it to a site like Imgur. Explain the link in the same message; don't just post it on its own.
Nope. You can link to it if you upload it to an image-sharing site and explain what the link is.
Oh ok
Google Drive also works, if you're comfortable sharing individual files that way.
(It's usually my preferred method, since I'm generally using a form-fillable PDF)
So would I export the file to post here?
good evening fellas
Hello
hows yall day going soo far
Going good
Trying to figure out how to send links to my 5e characters I've made for the dnd campaigns
which website are u using? im used with dicecloud and roll20
Google drive but not sure if that's a ok thing to use
depends always from dm to dm, i belive u can make a link with google drive and send it to ur dm soo that he will be the only one to see it
Ah ok
I'm not with any current dms from this discord I have one on another server but he never answers me
well i just entered the server since i had to leave the server i was in for dnd and im hopping at some point to restart somewhere
il try to look in lfg someday
The server I'm in they hardly respond when I ask when next session will be so I could schedule around it but noone hardly answers in there
im sorry to hear it bud i hope they will either give u an answer of i hope u can find someplace else where to play dnd
I'm looking for a good dm to campaign under I might be new but I'm willing to learn
Hello I’m new here
i started dnd 2 years ago and believe me im still new i know the game in general
good evening new fella
Thanks
I’ve been trying to make sung jinwoo for the game and I think I found the best way to do it
i myself still was learning with the group i was with but things got the wrong curve and i had to leave,
nice for u, if ur looking for some servers to join and see for some lfg u can use the chat all the way down
I've been debating to leave the server and look elsewhere but I'm friends with one of the members and don't want to cause bad blood
And just wondering if I go wizard rogue subclass would I need duel wield for the 2 daggers
u can always talk with him/her and try to figure things out thats what i always tried to do
u can always take the feat initiated to combat
Do what
for the dual wielding idk which subclass can give u the fighting stile soo
Because I just got the 2024 hand book and I don’t see that
idk much either i know its a feat whatsoever still idk if it could be a valuable feat it always depend what u aim with
I’m new to dnd but I seen a Druid I think with a baby owlbear can you have creatures as pets or is it just for looks
That’s up to the DM, generally.
Depends on the game. Non mechanical pets are often but not always fine
Okay thanks y’all
Sounds like the Arcane Trickster subclass for Rogue would suit you well. Monke likely means the feat Fighting Initiate, which you could take at certain character levels in order to pick up the Two-Weapon Fighting Fighting style. I would suggest getting further build advice in #character-discussion !
i’m thinking about buying my first players handbook should i buy a 2014 book or 2024
I suggest 2024. All future content will be made considering the 2024 rules update, and there are already guidelines in place to update any old content
what are the guidelines?
Alternatively, use the free rules until you know which version your future d&d group will be playing
If you don't own the old content, then the guidelines don't really matter to be honest
Since they're about adapting the old content to the newer rules
alright, i joined a group doing shattered obelisk the DM said that the campaign was using 2014 rules
It is mostly to deal with the change in what features backgrounds & species get. For example in 2014 species got ASIs; in 2024 that was moved to backgrounds.
I have a level 3 minotaur barbarian tribesman
Level 1 shadow elf sorcerer criminal
Level 1 Tabaxi rogue entertainer
Level 1 Leonine fighter traveler
Do y’all think for someone new is it better to start as a player or dm
Probably player right
Starting as a player tends to be easier, but it's 100% possible to start as the DM
There's more work as a DM because 1) you have to prepare everything, 2) expect to support your players (should have a better understanding of the rules), 3) schedule the sessions, 4) portray every creature/character that isn't a PC.
I'm not trying to dissuade you from becoming a DM. I've been playing D&D for 40+ years and I have more fun as a DM than as a player (I can't even remember who my first character was). DMing is fun but you need to be dedicated to it because it can be a lot of work.
I’m trying to get my friends into dnd with me but I haven’t play a game yet and none of them are really the type to set up an adventure and Dm sounds more fun to me
I recommend getting the Starter Set since it's made for new players and DMs in mind.
There are D&D Youtubers with videos that guide you through the adventure and tips on DMing. You can go to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Okay thank you
Try Peril in Pinebrook, it's free.
Anyone else here newish to dnd? I’m looking for some ppl to start a campaign with or any you guys know of. preferably for newbies so we can all learn together There’s three of us.

Advice on how to find a group is most welcome.

^ That's the channel that describes how to use our LFG channels to find a game (majority are online games)
To look for IRL games I'd suggest checking your local game stores, bookstores, libraries and social media.
i feel like it might be best to add something to the channel description too with how often this happens
thanks. my apologies. i am new to the app and group…. the find a game channel is not working for me. probably user error. tbd.
I'd suggest looking through #looking-for-players channel (this is where DMs are looking for player for their game) or #looking-for-community (other D&D servers) and message the poster or use the thread attached to the game posting to message them to indicate interest. Often the #looking-for-community posts have a link to join another Discord server and they may have D&D games for you to possibly join.
Hi! I was wondering if anyone would be able to maybe dm me and help me with making a character sheet, I'm just lost and I don't know what a lot of these things mean since it's my first time even making a character
Did you read the Free Rules yet?
Where might I find that? :'D
O ty
basic rules are better imo but you probably shouldnt worry abt the difference as a new player

Do verdant prince's have land or a place they control?
I don't if knowing what a verdant prince is common knowledge but if it is I must be a bad DnD player.
Not a #dnd-newcomers topic really
Alright
This channel is to help new-to-D&D folks get started learning the core D&D rules and mechanics
This is my second real session. Seeing as I'm a newcomer I thought it was appropriate
Alright thanks
Ah - gotcha. Try #dnd-discussion
hi
Welcome!
If you're new to D&D we have #learn-to-play and check the pinned messages here in this channel.
thanks i saw some but still looking for a group
Ah! Then check #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for groups/games you can join.
hello!
Caught my eye - for lore, you can always give the Forgotten Realms wiki a look. Here: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Verdant_prince
Do I get any ac bonuses as a tiny person?
Size has no influence on AC, no.
dont you have disadvantage on attacks against things two sizes smaller than you or am i hallucinating
you do not
Size has an influence on a couple of things:
- Carrying capacity
- Dehydration
- Malnutrition
- Difficult terrain (which can include creatures)
- Grappling and Shoving, and Grappled

The "What is D&D" link also has a bunch of resources.
i just bought the 2014 player’s handbook it’s kinda overwhelming with the amount of information i’m trying to figure out what the key points i should know for my first game session can someone help me
The most important things to know as a new player are:
- How to build your character
- What ability checks are
- What your character can do in combat
Question, if I am flying, should enemies firing ranged attacks at me have disadvantage?
Flying by itself doesn't make them have disadvantage, no
If anything, flying means you're less likely to have cover!
I am 4 inches tall. Flying, at like 20 meters away, and these goblins keep clapping me.
fly outside the range of the shortbows
There are no official character options that would create a character four inches tall, so you’re already bending the rules here.
Which means your DM would be the best person to have that conversation with.
3'5 means 3 feet, and 5 inches. This person said their character is 4 inches tall. That's a big difference
Hi guys
Goblins would be a lot less of a threat if they were all four inches tall.
God, that reminds me of the time I played with a buddy of mine in collage, and they made a goblin swarmkeeper ranger. Their swarm was just other, smaller goblins

post should help
Welcome! If I remember correctly, in those community episodes, they were playing much older editions of the game, so as you learn how to play, it might be a bit different from what you saw on TV
Its still the same fantasy role play, just some of the rules and mechanics will be different
will the master explain everything or..?
can i just stick to the script and not do funny business
There will be a dungeon master. If they are an expirienced player, they may be able to help you out a bit. But there is an expectation that you should learn at least the basics of the rules and a bit about how to play before joining a game. The more knowledge you bring with you to the game, the smoother everything will run
is there a dedicated channel for the new rules?

Im looking for some advise on "treasure chest" weapon rack" etc, for my dnd maps. any advice? im not looking to trow some money at a pation yet, since im stil very new
The Free Rules are linked in this bot post, under the "Quick Links" section
If you're looking for help on making maps specifically, there is a channel for that #dnd-maps
Not a Map, just a treasure chest, or weapon rack etc. so far i just copied pictures on google but it looks silly 😄
Brb, ill read sponse when im back at the computer
I'm not sure I understand what you're asking then? You want these images to use on your battle maps, right?
decoration
Decoration for your battle maps?
that is a lot of reading
i think i got the 70% of the idea and will try a site called roll20
I didn't even learn how to play this game and im already considering quitting this server's channels are overly complicated
you can go to id:browse and filter out the channels that don't interest you to make things simpler
I don't even know what channels are for there is too many
id:guide can help with that
Also, this is just the official DnD discord server. If you'd prefer another community to get into DnD with, you're more than welcome to search elsewhere. Maybe one of them is more your style, if discords aren't what you're looking for
Yaah i think thats better
Roll20 is a "virtual table top" which means its basically just a way to display battle maps and dice rolls online. It doesn't automate the process for playing the game. Its a very convenient tool, but its not the only thing you'll need to play the game
);
where can i play as soon as possible online?
I know it's not the right answer for everyone, but it is the honest one:
Joining a paid game will usually get you in the quickest.
i found some free game on steam with the same name
There's plenty of free games available, but those games also have a lot of competition.
Dungeons & Dragons Online
That's basically an MMO.
If you're looking for an MMO to play, then yeah, you can just jump right in there.
come on now
D&D is not a video game. Dungeons and Dragons Online is something different
Yes, typically
it's just a dude telling everyone else what they want to do
The process for find a game under normal circumstances usually takes several days, or maybe a week or more
tv makes it look so fun and fast to play xd
If you want to be the dude telling people what to do, you can generally find a game much quicker. But there are far more people who want to play then who want to run the games.
TV tends to only show established groups, not all the prep work
TV also shows professional entertainers
well guess i will go back to dead by daylight farming, adios
Think of it this way: if you want to find a long running campaign, you need to find a group of 3-5 other people who all have an availability in their schedule at the same time as you, and can commit to that time slot for the forseeable future, and everyone in that group all want to play the same style of game, and get along with each other.
Yea, i want cool chest and some other things to brighten up my dungeon
Which honestly, is part of why I still mostly play one shots, even though I've been playing with roughly the same people for years
Don't forget that the usual table involves 5 people who all have to find 2-5 hours that everyone is free at the same time for. Then they need to coordinate their characters, learn about the setting, and get everything prepared before they can start! It's certainly not a "just jump in and play" kind of game
Ok, if you're looking for recources to enhance your dungeon maps, then the folks in #dnd-maps will be able to help you
There's a few options based on d&d rules
would rather play with bots at this point
There's a few single player games that are like DnD
thanks
names?
Any of the Baldur's Gate games, though 3 uses a different edition.
Baldur's Gate 3 is probably the most popular one recently
There are games that are inspired by D&D, but the actual game is played by a group of people. Its not really possible to capture that same essance in a single player format. Baldur's Gate 3 is a extremely popular video game that's based on the D&D rules
hell yeah then
thx i will be leaving now since this game need a lot of time and perp i honestly don't have
now just tweak and prepare abit more for my game, players already anxious 😄
I wish you the best of luck, and if you ever feel like coming back to try the table top game, you'll be welcome
BG3 is probably the most popular now, but BG1 will probably always be my favorite. Especially modded up.
But yeah, 3 is probably the closest you'll get to d&d 5th edition without actually playing it
tried BG once, its a very good game, but it doesnt beat dnd tabletop 🙂
In our last game the Kobold asked the fighter to be trown at the Dragon that was trying to recruit the kobold to join him, and they decided to fight, but when the dragon fled they decided to trow the kobold at the dragon which was really funny. You can't custom a real game like that 😄

Depends time of day
Also this is not the channel for finding a game - see #find-a-game
LFG standing for Looking for Game for those that don’t know
well ITS CLOSED AND I VEEL LIKE I SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY ANY TIME
Did you actually read the info and instructions in that channel?
Or look through the posts in #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community ?
Most D&D games are not “pickup” games - they take time to organize and align schedules.
D&D isn't like a video game where you can just drop into a lobby. Scheduling is the biggest issue since you need to coordinate between the DM and the players (typically three to five) on when is the best day and time when everyone is free to play.
If you are that impatient, DMs are unlikely to invite you to join.
I recommend a west marches

Soo do I create my own charrakter
You have to follow the rules and guidelines for creating a character, but yes.
And what are they
The free rules are linked in the "Quick Links" section of the above bot post
Ok
Do you typically adjust a character to the specific scenario you want to participate in or do you just do superficial tweaks to make it match the world (e.g. if you have a cheerful sunny character but you make them a mechanic in a scifi vs a smith in a medieval one, or would you also make them less sunny if the setting was a dark and moody campaign)?
The DM will tell their players what the setting is like and the players will create characters based on that.
I typically create a pc after I know what the campaign is I'm going to be playing in.
D&D isn't sci-fi.
Are robots allowed
There are normally no robots in D&D.
There is a playable species that has the construct creature type
Aw ok
Autognomes are constructs but that's up to the individual DM to allow them or not. Warforged are living constructs but they're limited to the Eberron campaign setting.
warforge are humanoid in 5e
Honestly, the best practice is that you should make your character after joining a campaign, so you can match their tone, backstory, and goals to whatever the setting and story of that campaign will be. If you want to make a character beforehand, you should be flexible, and make adjustments to help them better fit into that DM's world
How can I play a game of d&d
Find a group to play with (we don't host D&D games here). See #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group/game to join.
Oki ty
Have you read the Free Rules yet?
It crashed
You find a group of people, find a time you are all free, and then just start. D&D isn’t a video game. You play the game just by talking to other people, so once you have a group, you just have to organize the game between yourselves
Oh ok ty
Sorry was just trying to think of an example of a role change that would fundamentally be superficial but necessary to suit the scenario and that's the best I could think of!
Thanks that's helpful, I've just been reading through some of the looking for players posts and some seem to expect you to bring a set character and I wasn't sure if I was missing something! I thought you would create a character to best suit the campaign and the rest of the group too to make it most interesting
“Best practice” and “what most people do” are often two different things. This is an online community dedicated to D&D, so most people here spend a lot of time think about the game and their characters. People like to build characters in their free time, even if they aren’t in a campaign yet. So some people just sort of expect that any new players they recruit here will come with a character they already made, even if that’s not really the best way to handle things
Ahaaaa that makes so much sense, thank you! Yeah not sure why I didn't think that those who were deep into it would have some characters they're itching to use and that's what was being discussed 🙃

👋
hey!!!
Anyone know a good way to get into dnd? I played A LOT of bg3 so im not entirely clueless but I know they changed a lot and added different things so idk
Here are some options:
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.)
- Or play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the Free Rules.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the video are for the 2014 rules. The fundamentals are pretty much the same between 2014 and 2024 rulesets, though.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
Anyone actively using tehe Maps feature? I am getting a feel for the tool, but I am struggling to see how people use it in game. Do you basically pre-populate and hide your monsters around the map and let the players move about and when they get in range, you pull their tokens and the monsters in the area into the encounter?
That's more #dm-discussion than a newcomers topic.
Hi everyone, brand new to the whole DnD community.. funny enough just binged watched The Legend of Vox Machina lol and it certainly peaked my interest. I have seen some videos but eager to learn more and can’t wait to join a campaign in the future!!
Is it hard to find a dm that will take new players?
I think that depends on whether you're looking for a DM who will teach you the game from zero versus one who helps you as you continue learning (after you've done some legwork on your own). I think the former is harder to come by than the latter.
Neither's impossible, though.
I'd rather make mistakes and learn through it tbh would be a much more enjoyable experience. At minimum im not useless i have like 15 days on bg3 which isnt great but helps
Sure, but I'd suggest you make an effort at learning the rules on your own. Imagine any DM has multiple applicants to their games. Will they go with the one who knows nothing or one who's at least read the rules?
Just my two cents, anyway!
bet

Literally anything. This is my first time😶
No worries!

You'll definitely want to have a link to the Free Rules handy, too:

Character Sheet
To keep track of important information about your character, you need a character sheet, whether it’s a printed character sheet, a digital character sheet, or plain paper. Choose whichever style of sheet works for you, and then embark on creating a character! Chapter 2 of the Free Rules walks you through the steps of character creation.
If you're struggling with the myriad character choices available, premade characters are a great way to streamline character creation and get playing. All you have to do is browse through the available paper or digital options to see which is most appealing.
Oh yes that I've looked through that and it kinda didnt make sense. I looked at it and it just confused me
Check out the "introductory videos" link above. It's a tutorial series.
You'll definitely want to get familiar with character sheets and the character creation process (there's some good links above). In general, I'd recommend coming up with a few rough ideas for characters you might enjoy. Then you can work with your group to pick the best fit and add any finishing details.
Ok instead of just telling me to look at stuff can we you know explain what the stuff is
There's a lot of stuff to cover. You can watch/read the stuff at your own pace.
It's generally a lot easier for us to answer specific questions.
Yeah unforytunately we don't have time/bandwidth to teach people D&D one on one.
The more self-learning you do and the more specific questions you ask, the better we're able to help.
Ok how do character sheets work.
A character sheet is a record of your character's stats, abilities, equipment, etc.
Ok how do you determine there stats?
So you'll regularly refer to it and update it as the game proceeds.
There's lots of different stats, but you'll probably want to start with their ability scores. There's three official ways to determine ability scores.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
The bullet points there. ☝️
Ability scores?
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Six numbers that reflect a character's physical and mental attributes.
A very muscly character probably has a high Strength score, for example.
Or a very educated character would have a high Intelligence score.
Oh no I know what class I want to be. Cleric
Each type of character will prioritize different abilities.

Cleric
Invoke divine magic to heal, bolster, and smite
Clerics draw power from the realms of the gods and harness it to work miracles. Blessed by a deity, a pantheon, or another immortal entity, a Cleric can reach out to the divine magic of the Outer Planes—where gods dwell—and channel it to bolster people and battle foes.

So if you check the middle section there, a Cleric generally wants Wisdom as their highest ability.
Wisdom is their spellcasting ability, so improving your Wisdom improves the potency of your spells.
Ah so I get to choose where the points go?
Yeah, once you've determined your six numbers, you can assign each one to the ability of your choice.
And I get 27 points to go in 6 categories
If you're doing Point Cost, yes.
Each one starts at 8, and then you can spend from your 27 points to increase them as you like.
Ah ok. And abilities of my choice?
Yep
Whats that.
What I meant is that you can assign them to whichever ability you want.
If you've got a 15, you can put in Wisdom or Strength or whatever you like.
If I've got a 15?

I guess if you're using Point Cost, it's probably more accurate to say you can spend your points on the ability of your choice.
So if you want to increase one to 15, you can.
(Just note it costs two points each to increase it from 13 -> 14, or from 14 -> 15.)
Ah ok. So let me do that and I'll get back to you!
