You can easily build a Cleric that doesn't heal at all. In fact, some of the most damaging early game spells in the game are on the Cleric spell list. Try out Guiding Bolt for size!
Remember that classic roles like "healer" or "tank" aren't really applicable to DnD's combat system.
yoooooo happy new year my freiends
Happy New Year fellow adventurers et al.
Yeah. Some of my clerics do their best to never heal at all and area annoyed if they need to
although being a healing cleric gives an easy reason to be part of a party yet not know the others, simply hired to keep the others alive.
Hey so im new to this server and i have a group of people who are new and want to play, but we dont have a dm
The looking for a game thing is a little confusing to me so i was wondering if I could get some clarification on how to use that
Did you read through #find-a-game ?
Hey everyone, I’m new here… both to the server and to D&D! I’ve always been curious about it and wanted to find a group to learn more. I’ve watched a bunch of YouTube videos, but honestly, there’s so much info, I’m not sure if I absorbed it all correctly!
So, first things first, I could use a bit of help creating my character. I know there’s a whole book for it, but is there something a little simpler? I have ADHD, and I’m a little scared I’ll get distracted or interrupt something important. I’m also dyslexic, which means my brain tends to come up with some… let’s say, “unique” ideas that may not be entirely “by the book,” and I really don’t want anyone to think I’m messing things up (my social anxiety could never handle that). On top of that, I’m autistic, so I get really meticulous about these things—I just want to make sure everyone enjoys playing with me, and that I’m not annoying anyone with a million questions. So, yeah, any help would be greatly appreciated!
I did but it was still kind of confusing for me
I couldnt tell if I should do one under looking for players or looking for dm
Well what are you looking for? A DM or players?
Also Find a Game does have descriptions on what each option is for
Ill slap up some links for you to look through

u scared me 🥲 first half of the message was so aggressive :,,,)
A dm
First one covers general "what is D&D" and covers various aspects of it
Second one is a guided character creation for new players
You can use something like the D&D Beyond character creator to help you follow along with the guide
mmm okay
Thank you
Otherwise regarding your post, D&D is a very welcoming game filled with people of all neurodiversities and any other varied aspect of human life you can think of. Dont worry too much about being seen negatively, just be honest and earnest when you start playing with others and you should have a great time in this hobby!
It's also not a hobby that requires you to learn everything all at once. Take your time, and learn things step by step. There's no rush at all. You'll get there!
i know but i want to play now so i need to learn fast 🥲
It usually takes a couple of days or even weeks to set up a game of DnD proper. Like I said, there's no rush
What exactly are you looking for? Recommendations on spells and stuff? #character-discussion can help you out
Ah so that what #character-discussion is for
Right! D&D isn't fast paced over the night type of play it can take days, weeks, months or longer to learn.
It does require patience and good imagination.
this whole thing is so overwhelming 🥲
whats “encumbrance”
Hello what YouTube videos to you is good for newcomers(like me) for learning spell
Encumbrance is carry weight, and is largely ignorable as long as you dont get too crazy
This is pretty much all the things I'e been feeling
I've created my character but chat gpt and I walked through the options and now they aren't all availble in the character builder. I feel dear old "Charles" may have led me astray...
Which character builder are you using? If it's D&D Beyond, not all options are available for free
Though it's also possible that chat GPT was giving you incorrect information.
It seems correct based on the google/youtube searches. I think it's the free issue. Are there other builders?
I would highly recommend not using Chat GPT for any of your DnD experience.
I can't recommend anything here that would allow you to access paid content without paying for it
Im down to rebuild but I just used it for class descriptions etc
As for the content itself, there's free information and paid information. Without purchasing the supplements, you're limited to only the free options
well i got overwhelmed again and now sitting in dark corner, i just want to plaaay all this customisation and rules are so haaard 🥲
Unfortunately, it's a game run on a lot of rules. Thankfully though, you'll only really need to know the rules that you interact with yourself.
Most important for a new player are how to create your character, what d20 tests are, and how combat works
Also, if you aren't already, create a character at level 1. This reduces the amount of complexity quite a bit.
that is the most complex part
If the character customization options seem overwhelming you could always choose a pre-built character sheet. It's species, class, ability scores and such will be set for you and then you only have to worry about learning what that characters does
@compact cape I'm there with you friend. My thinking was to build my character and learn the rules specific to that first and then expand as I grow
The folks in this channel are also very good about answering questions or directing folks to resources with the answers so never be afraid to ask. 🙂
the problem is i want to make my own 2 ( i know it a lot to ask ) but if i just know what i can do and don’t understand what others can or can not how can i play properly?
The builder on dndbeyond was actually very easy to use.
The game is very collaborative. There are no roles that need to be filled by default. I'd just create whatever you feel would be fun to play and you'll be fine.
Once you have played a bit, you'll get a feeling for it.
You can also make your own. It's just another option so you can see what a completed one looks like/ how the dots connect.
Are you using an online builder with access to more than the free rules or phb? Sometimes limiting yourself to the basics can make it easier.
You also don't have to know all the rules right at your first game. Everyone has a learning curve and typically people bring their books to reference at the table because there is simply a lot.
you don’t understand the frantic perfectionist and my overwhelmed autism are having a battle for it 🥲
I get it. But part of the game is also it's inherent 'murkyness'. Many groups will treat some rules and interactions differently from others.
Yes, some rules are important, but the storytelling, the narrative, is just as important.
I do for different reasons. We're going to hae to trust the process. I played a few decades ago at a sleepover and had no idea what i was doing. Just happy and rolling. I am tapping back into that willing nature.
i got recommended dnd beyond wich is cool but just throws info at me and like “yeah here do with this whatever gl”
Maybe you could flip it around and start by reading the rules text? That may help with providing structure.
Well, the reality is that you dont really make many choices when making a level 1 character, a lot of it is predetermined by the few choices you do make
Do you know what class and race you have in mind? Once you start with that in mind it limits the options accordingly.
One step at a time. The free rules are laid out very nicely so that you learn each step as you go
Most of the expression in the character you make is the narrative and background you give them, which isnt limited by rules
where does one find the free rules? That's where I've been stalled out
I know it's there somewhere but they're hiding from me

Bolded free rules link in the second section
no i have general idea of a game bc i wach others play on youtube a lot but the ting is the character making is more important right? i can just go figure out more basics while playing
Yeah level 1 character is effectively choose class, race, background, and like a couple other options
I wouldn't recommend getting into a game without understanding the basics of how to play
There really isnt much customization to be had with a level 1 character
Mechanically
Thanks. And now I'm going geriatric millenial with my paper and pencil
. I'll be back later
A very important thing to learn is to separate your characters mechanics from their narrative
While DnD can be learned "as you play", it means constantly stopping the game to explain how things work, which is not very responsible of all the other players' time.
the thing is even if i learn all the thing i shud from the book i alway i mean always have question, bajillion of them
Sure, there's always questions to ask and things to be clarified. But going into a game with the assumption of "it's ok if I didn't read this, someone else will explain it for me" is putting extra responsibility and burden on your DM and fellow players (that they might not have signed up for!)
Getting the core basics of how to play should be more than sufficient for your needs. Read up on:
- How to create your character and what they can do
- What d20 tests are
- How combat works
And you'll have all the info you need to get started
yeah i get that but the thing is from what i have gathered (videos and book) its a lot of info at once so i will have the questions as a beginner anyway
believe me last thing i want to be is a burden and irritate anyone
well i guess this will sty on my shelf for another 5 or so months bc its again 2 overweening, thx for the advises tho
Its more an irritant if new players havent bothered to look at anything at all. If you have a basic understanding from watching videos and a bit of reading that is a solid start.
Often people let groups they are joining know they are new and those groups, in turn, are typically more accepting.
Also as you come across things and have questions you can ask them here. You don't need to wait for a game to get answers/help.
Please don't let the amount of data dissuade you.
Its like trying to get in to a book series that has 10 books out. Your journey begins with page one of book one. You don't need to know all 10 before you can begin.
Journey starts with a single page, or, in this case, a character sheet
thx! stop u made me cry :(((((
i started 3 times already for past few years and i drop it because its so much at once and than it popes up somewhere on my social media and i want to have fun 2 and get to have all the fun experience with ppl
We're here and happy to answer any questions you might have
thx guys you all are so sweet stoop it new year im crying like a baby :,,,,,)
This is what community is supposed to be for.
Take your time and when you have questions, ask here. We'll help figure it out
okay y’all buckle up, wipping out the big guns (laptop) let get serous here
the funny thing is its almost 1am and i need to work 10h shift tomorrow all alone and i’m starting a whole new project rn
Just try and be forgiving to yourself, its a lot to learn and you dont have to learn it all at once, accept you are gonna take it one step at a time
Its better to make a character then figure out the details than let the details get in your way of making a character
whats CHA?
It stands for Charisma.
how many classes can i have?
Theoretically all of them, but it's highly, highly recommended to stick with just 1. Having more than one can make you very weak if you're not an experienced player.
dose color of the skin have to match the race?
Yes no?
That’s probably a question for the DM. Some are more strict about abiding by lore, whatever they use.
all true.. the game has species that are catfolk, birdfolk, lizardfolk and more.. having a variety of colours is somewhat expected, but always polite to check with a DM if you are making a pick that seems very out of sorts.
That said, I had a tiefling who was ombred in color so darker at the horns/head and fading down into another colour entirely.
I always chuckle at the description of Tiefling skins tones being like humans with some red and then one of the most famous piece of art from the books was purple
I’m new to this I apologize too bug someone but can someone help me make a character, I kinda jumped into this without research.

Thank you!🙏
Hello. I'm fairly new and, knowing core concepts, am looking to make some characters then join a campaign. If I'm looking at character options and interactions should I be looking at the 2014 rules (assuming people will stick to 2014 until more 2024 exists) or the 2024 rules (assuming I won't have to touch 2014 much - though I don't mind either way) thanks :)
i have a very specific question, can i give info to a DM wit out telling the group in the middle of a calpain, like if i want to sneak away for example if i say it people will naturally notes my absents
It would probably depend on your DM and which edition they want to use. 2024 was designed to be backwards compatible with some updates to the rules overall.
Yes you can but there might be roles like perception while you sneak away
you can for sure.. I wouldn't necessarily recommend trying to hive off from the group frequently as it means the DM has to run two different scenarios at once and possibly slow down the game as a whole. Also, disappearing on the team a lot may lead to them not trusting you.
That said, done well for interesting reasons, a sneak away to do something can be cool.
and as Lunarith said, you are not guaranteed success, another party member could see you.
In that case would I join a group and then make a character? I don't want to show up unprepared or not knowing my class options etc 😄
But I can of course join, discuss, then research if that is what others are doing ^^
Its fine to make a character as a concept, just dont expect specifics of the character to work with any group you joing
Yea, totally fun to make a character with either rules, especially to practice, but you may have to make changes when you join a game
Some DMs like to roll for stats, some like point buy, some might ban certain species, etc
Hello again sorry to bug you, how do I send the character sheet?
No worries, what do you mean send the character sheet?
So I made a character sheet and I don’t know what to do with it now
Next step would be to look for a game 🙂

Oh? Then what would I do with the sheet?
It may take some time to find a game though so please don't be discouraged if you don't find one immediately
Hang on to the sheet until you need it
Okay! Thank you so much you’ve been a big help for me.
Happy to help!
You could also share it in #character-discussion if you want to show off or have someone double-check everything.
okay so i have a character sheet here so i need someone to just have a look and tell me if its okay and did i do everything correctly (as i know i cant send fotos here)
if you used D&D Beyond and in the first home section of the character builder set the sheet to "Public" you should then be able to send us a link to the character sheet when you generate it
can i join anybody

then you'd have to save it and upload it to a sharing site like google or as a picture and upload to somewhere like imgr
ugh well i guess i will figure that tomorrow its already 3am here so, thx for all the help everyone i will bother y’all tomorrow
Hey is the handbook good for beginners
The Players Handbook is a great base to work with. That said, why don't you first try out the game using the free rules first and if you like it enough, then consider in investing in books.

yo does the blade pack boon scale off charisma in the legacy version?
you need hexblade for that
Hex Warrior? Yes.
oh alr thanks, I’m debating whether to spec fiend or Hexblade into socerer
do not the melee sorc

Might wanna read this to understand what D&D is
This is an example of an online character sheet from D&D Beyond. The sheet shows you what abilities your character has - this one was pre-generated as a Human Fighter. https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/139114352/2yYIuf
god damn
mind you that is level 9 - most games start at level 1
try this one.. level 1 human barbarian
when it means by score, does it mean by modier or the ability score
im making a monster and this is my first time
well i mean i have been playing 1.5 dnd sessions
Do I have to read the book
It will help you understand the game and make it more likely to find a game. You don’t have to memorize or know it all.
If you dont, the people you are playing with are going to have to do it for you. Its a courtesy to try and not take advantage of other people like that. As Undying said, you dont have to memorize it or even feel like you know it well, but putting in the effort matters
Kk I'm just gonna try to memorize as much as I can
First you need a dm, secondly a group, thirdly a proper schedule
Read as much as you need to
If you're playing a monk, just read the monk feats and subclasses
I would like to join a group!

whew hi everyone
Hi
So what if I happened to not read everything about races and classes, and my players already made their characters with inconsistencies to the rules? I'm completely fine with it as the DM, but will this effect anything else?
What inconsistencies are we talking about
Ello there
been thinking to play for years, my buddy and I are wanting to get in together

Thisll cover a lot of intro stuff
✌🏾
😭😭 AHHH I don't want to make them rewrite anything, but it's gonna be a mess
Have you had a group discussion about themes
No, we plan to meet up this weekend
Because having content like that in your game should only be allowed if everyone mutually agrees
I don't think the themes should be too much of a problem. They were discussing it with me and just laughing at each other. I'm more worried about the logistics of it all
Well, saying no is a major part of being a DM
Nothing you really said is crazy, just them getting ideas in their head and writing it down as backstory
Tell them thats not how D&D works and there is stuff in the game that allows them to do that instead
Okay, thank you!!!
Hello all I’m fairly new to dnd although I did attempt to dm a game once but because I didn’t know what I was doing I feel like I need to be a player for a bit before I get into the running a game side of things
thats fair, DMing can feel daunting and experiencing other people doing it can help you figure it out yourself
Welcome!
I was hoping to find some people who would be willing to have me tag along one of there journeys
you can read #find-a-game to see how to use our LFG channels to find a group for you to join
Sounds like a plan thank you
How do you play dnd like what are the basic rules
Have fun.
you an start with the players handbook. there;s a ton of summaries on basics
also look up basic rules and the basic rulebook should come up
Have you any experience
There a way to get to the looking for dm channel without just typing #looking-for-dm ?
And same with #looking-for-players
Hmmmm?
I was doing a bit of research and came across 2 interesting classes.
The Rune knight.
And the Rune Scribe.
Two advanced classes down different growth trees.
I then asked myself. Can the rune scribe learn the runes from the rune knight?
I am hopeful that someone here can answer it.
Use the #channel-guide
No - while you can multiclass (take two or more different classes) you may only have one subclass within that class. So there’s no way to do that without homebrew (self or community created rules/items)
Oh wait those are a subclass and a feat… okay so that would be possible
With this i think crafting as a rune scribe would be viable after learning the fire rune from the Rune knight
place a fire rune on an all purpose tool
Hi, I am new to dnd and wanted to ask on which medium you play dnd online, like on which app do you see the world
For maps and stuff, there's VTTs (Virtual Table Tops)
Few options include D&D Beyond, Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo, Foundry
The one used depends on the DM though
ok thanks, my friends and I all are new, and we don't know who will be the dm
I'd recommend owlbear rodeo to start out with. It's free and easy to use. Although all of them may have up and downsides depending on your needs.
thanks
My party usually uses Owlbear for the visuals and map and then DnD Beyond for sheets. Because when it works it works pretty well
im new here (as you couldve guessed) and was wondering if there were any tips on finding a game to play with other people that the find a game tab didnt specify on
I mean there's always various reddits

Try this one right here!
Is it possible to ruin a dnd game?
yes
Ruin how? Bad behavior by players or the DM, or scheduling issues tend to kill groups the most in my experience
Though sometimes people just don't mesh and it's not anyone's fault
Bad rolls and the like don't tend to ruin games, imo. Though I suppose people who never want to fail might think so
Happy to say that I played my first ever game last night, and had an absolute blast!
I’ve been messing around with dndbeyond and roll20 but for some reason the roll20 app won’t load my characters. I can’t figure out if I’m doing something wrong?? It seems like a weird bug but 🤷🏻♀️

No I’m new
Yeah its not 100% the best the only way it works if you are apart of a campang otherwise your sheet wont be useible at all. D&D beyond is better in that regards but if you like fully online games Roll-20 is a heavy hitter despite somtimes being a pain in the rear

Are boards expensive?
Howdy
I wanna get into dnd as a beginner, I already made a character in dnd beyond, so what's next
you have find a group to play with. Either locally or online.
locally: friends, family or see if there are local gamestores, you can often find people there
Hi and congrats on the sheet! Have you had a chance to take a look at the basic rules yet? That would be a helpful boost
if you mean maps if you have a printer its the cost of printing supplys.
online: here on #find-a-game or in places like reddit /lfg, roll20.net or facebook groups, discord servers etc
Typically you will be told to roll a sheet in session zero befor hand, Some tables wont allow you to come in with a prerolled character (sometimes)
its alright to make characters as practise. just be prepared to adjust stats or other details once you have a DM
The board that you use to play the game
Some tables would ask you to make one with them, but if you only used the standard species/class options and the standard array for stats, i don't think a DM would mind a pre-existing sheet
If that’s what they are called
dnd is not a board game. you need a character sheet and dice to play, but those can be digital theoretically
and a printed sheet only costs you the ink and paper you print them on
that one might also become an issue. this eldadrin variant is kinda ...semi-official? its an example race from the DMG that is there to teach DMs how to make a custom race/species
Ah well crap
is all speculation till you get a DM, so dont worry about that too much
Roger that
might help to talk with any DM, I've never met one that wasn't helpful and understanding with a new player. Most even have pre-made character sheets or can walk you through setting up a new one. lol even chat gpt can whip up a fairly usable backstory with a tiny prompt. "Make a dungeons and dragons 5e backstory for a Silver Dragonborn Paladin who's father tragically met an end saving you and your family from a raiding party of orcs and goblins"
Really? I thought it was a board game
another super helpful tip early on, don't be afraid to message the dm before and after sessions or when you have idea's pop in your head. Almost all of them would love to encorporate exciting aspects of your personal story into the saga you'll experience in the group 😄
no, its a table top role playing game. Sometimes people use printed maps or similar props, but those are optional
I mean you do play it on tabletop sometimes but there are a lot of Virtual Tabletops too heck I've seen a discord with free drawn dungeons via webcam pointed at his dining room table and it was one of the most epic dungeon crawl one shots i can remember 😄 a character sheet, dice, and willing DM is about all you need to get rolling. It feels cooler to be physically together but not really required with technology
Do I need an essential kit?
only if you plan to DM. and not required at all either I should add. the free rulebook from D&D Beyond is plenty to run a level 1-5 campaign and you've got this discord for any questions too
I’m confused on what to buy for dnd
Dice 😄 it's really super low entry to play initially. Amazon has a bog standard dice kit for like $2
the characters are free to make on DDB and they even have a guide for step by step or pre-mades ready to go!
the essentials kit and the starter set are both small adventures plus a bunch of props that are made for beginners. Either is good buy but nothing is strictly necessary, and you only need one per group max, so I wouldnt buy it if you arent planning to DM or buy it for a DM
lol tbh you don't even need the dice, most discords have a roll bot and roll20 has it built in, Owlbear.rodeo too I think DDB campaigns do too but I've not actually used them before
just tested out roll20's starter on a fresh account you can host an entire session for free on there with a few free players and free starter adventures. I'll bet the others have a free tier too but can say roll20's is a pretty easy start if you're not sure where to begin
how do i calcuate skills?
Do you mean ability scores or the bonuses associated with skills (Perception, History, etc.)?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/using-ability-scores#AbilityScoresandModifiersTable
this helps a lot if you mean what to put down for a + or - modifer on your skill rolls
thanks
anytime 😄 it's a pretty easy table to commit to memory as it pops up often would recommend that when you get a chance. That page helps with alot of other skill rolls questions
hay what's VTT?
basically a software or website that provides you with digital tools similar and beyond what you can find on a game table. dice, maps, creature tokens, fog of war and much more
oooh thats cool okay thx
there are a lot of really popular ones out there to try out all with varying prices and learning curves. D&D Beyond has one in early alpha I think Project Sigil, roll20 has one, Owlbear.rodeo, d20 i think too?, Foundry VTT is another popular one but really high learning curve.
I'm a broke student so
Many of them are free with paid options. With Roll20, you can access the DMs books within their games if they own the content.
Ultimately, your DM will be the one picking which VTT to use, and there's a way to play on each of them for free, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Guy I'm just asking for my bro there's a website that create a map for d&d
We saw it on a short but we can't remember the name
How does rage work
You can activate it as a bonus action, which gives you certain perks like damage resistance and stronger attacks.
But then you need to meet certain conditions, like making an attack, to keep it going for another round.
You can find the full details here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/2190875-barbarian#Rage-10292150
But if you have any more specific questions, feel free to ask.
hello so im new to dnd ive always wanted to try it but never could can someoneone help me make a character and maybe invite me to their group?
Do you have maybe a tutorial how every cube's in dnd works? It can be very confusing 😭😭
Sory I am stupid I meant dice
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
The demo here also does a good job of covering the basics, including how the dice work.

Welcome! Chapter two in the Free Rules does a good job of walking through the character creation process:

If you've got any questions about that process, you're welcome to ask them here.

Hello everyone i just wanted to say hi and introduce myself, my name is Sepiathief or just Sepia (not real name of course). I have played quite a bit of drakar och demoner (mostly as DM) which is basically Swedish DND with another world with other rules, creatures and core mechanics but i am very interested in trying out DnD both as a player and Dm, i would also be interested in somehow playing online if that is possible and maybe baldurs gate in the future

Hi everyone, and happy New Year! I hope the year is off to a great start for you all. I’m brand new to D&D, and while I’ve already created a few characters, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the lore and mechanics. I’m looking for an in-person group in the Fort Mill, SC area that’s willing to help me learn the ropes. Hopefully, I can connect with a local group here. Thanks for reading!
So as a heads up we don't allow soliciting/organizing games in these main chat channels. We have channels specifically devoted to Looking For Games (LFG). Please see #find-a-game and read it carefully as it will explain how to use those LFG channels. Also when posting on this server, make sure to not share personally identifying information such as exact age, location information, or other info that can make it easy for folks to identify you in real life here. That's for everyone's safety.
So, me and my two other friends have never played DnD. The 3 of us would like to start playing as it seems pretty interesting but none of us have any exprience and dont really know where to start. We can call but we cant meet IRL that often, so it would be over discord. Where can we all learn and get started? We just want it to be the 3 of us. Thanks!!

The channel I just linked will cover a lot of the basics!
Could someone tell me how monks can be played?
Wdym, monks can be played any way narratively, mechanically they hit stuff a lot with fists or monk weapons
I get that, but what kinds of builds work for them? How do I use ki points, what weapons make sense for them? That sort of stuff
Hoe do they fit into teamplay during combat too, ig
They like dex and wis, they use unarmed or monk weapons, ki point abilities tell you how you use them
so you wanna start with a level in wizard and then just keep taking wizard levels until you hit 20 /j
but yeah prioritise dex, then wis, then con
in 2014 rules monks can also be decent ranged weapon users
Wait wdym?
They were joking with you
real
I'm a new DM and I'm running lost mine of phandelver and I noticed theres a longsword +1 coming up called talon but nobody in my party currently uses longsword I was wondering If I should change it to a scimitar because one of my player uses them
by the same token I saw theres a mace called lightbringer and someone in my party uses handaxes
So should I change the weapon type for them or just leave it how it is
Sure, giving useless magic items can make the world feel more real, but it sure does suck from the perspective of the players
Ok I should probably change it becuase it would suck for the players
yo so like im new and idk how to play dnd 😭

We're in two then brother 😄 hello everyone! Nice to meet you!
nice to meet you man
Howdy fellas
I’m writing a BG3 fanfic, but I’m fairly new to DnD in general and have some questions regarding its lore. If I could get some answers here or via PM, that would be most helpful.
Thanks in advance
The Essentials runs about $50+ on Amazon the 5e series is pretty good.
so uhm is there any brave soul or DM who would like to kindly tell me more about DnD and how to get started or play? The only knowledge I got about the lore is from BG3 (I beat the game twice and on honor mode too so I hope maybe a couple things are similar 😊)
Oh nice, thanks!
Hello
Ello there
Question there a virtual dice cuz Idk where to get a d20 or a percentage dice
I can't buy online cuz I don't have a bank account
Most of the time the medium you use to play D&D will have a built in dice roller
You can also just google it and find a ton of free ones
Thanks
hey im new to this is there active groups that play here me and my wife would love to learn and play a nice game
Yo, this seems like a good channel for me
You can use #find-a-game to find a game on this server
yeah but thats confusing dont games last days/weeks are the groups consistant?
Depends on the group you join, it could be a group for a one shot or a long term campaign
It to find a server
I'm still in the system
which one would you suggest?
If you are new new and just trying it out, a one shot requires 0 commitment
And once you are sure you enjoy it, take some time finding a campaign thats right for you
More of a #optimization or #character-discussion question
Hello, I'm very new to DnD, I created a character and joined a DnD party that was already a few months in that some of my friends play in, my DM told me to create a character sheet but I'm just having trouble figuring out all the options and selections, any advice?
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

Im playing in one of my first campaigns right now.
I already have a class, a subclass, her race and in debth information about her
It's session 3 and I feel... very bored
Sounds like you are mostly done
Have you selected your background?
planning to, I just don't feel at all invested in it
Well, everyone has different expectations of what they want out of a D&D campaign, aligning those expectations with a group of similar minded people is the hard part
Figure out what you expect/want so you can communicate that
The problem is i don't know what I want lol. I don't know what "good dnd" even is
I have created an entire backstory for her, showed that to my DM but he told me to create a character sheet and bring it in next session, I started it on dnd and beyond but just trying to figure out what selections I make
Its wholly dependent on you what "good dnd" is, what drew you to the idea of the game? What makes you excited to try it?
Well you know your race class and subclass, so you can select those ez pz
Your stats are pretty easy to choose based on your class
Background, just choose whichever one has the stats you want the most
You can consider the feat too if you want
Just the idea of a group adventure, exploring stories, places, finding loot, killing big bad evil doods and lesser evil doods.
so far it feels the opposite of that
ex. do I enable dice rolling, what do I select for hit points ( does going through create a character on DnD and beyond generate all the information for your character sheet or do you need to do that yourself? )
Most of thats stuff on that page doesnt matter, its just what options you want to be shown, and dice rolling is if you are gonna be using D&D beyond as your dice roller, doesn't matter if you are playing on another VTT or something
Okay so potentially just print out a character sheet and then go through it with my DM before our next session is what you're saying?
HP is ask your DM kinda thing
Nah, a lot of the choices you can just make yourself
HP specifically DMs can choose wether you roll for HP per level or take average or if you get to choose
But if he is asking you to make a character sheet, try and fill in everything else
but yeah we've had 3 sessions so far and we haven't even had any encounters or really gone anywhere, we went into like a forest briefly and then just came back to this inn that they want to build and upgrade. so I've kinda just been randomly using my wizard spells coz im bored lol
Yeah, sounds like he is making it a bit too much of a sandbox without any direction, just letting the players take control
we had a 40 minute interaction of exploring this completely abandoned inn
Newbie DMs tend to have issues with telling players no and kind of letting them run the show too much
its still going on xD
i conked out like 30 mins ago
but i dont wanna say anything
dont wanna be rude
yeah probably
I just wanna do something
it's been 2 hrs and all i've done is find familiar q-q
I 100% agree I played it and its nice, though sound slike your game is more or less is roleplay heavy
thats for @fringe tangle
yeah theres not rly anything happening other than the characters talking to eachother about stuff that doesnt rly matter
But yeah, sounds like its not really the group for you
You have the experience for next time to help you find a campaign that fits your expectations
no, they've been dming for 20 years
it was a group of my friends that wanted to play so i joined
but im finding it hard to pay attention or feel invested
Yeah, no hard feelings, but id just say its not the game for you
Yeah there is no harm in saying this isnt the game for you you feel there there is little to no direction and your to new to dive into a roleplay heavy game. Its not aimless they wanna focus of Slice of life things either way
Honestly the game I am running is a little more faster pace atm, (lv 7 and 7 sessions into the game)
I am just getting into dnd. What should I familiarize myself with, or learn before trying to play my first campaign?
Alright cool, thanks
What would be a good AC for cleric
More of a #optimization type question
Ah ok
Making a character for the first time, so far going well but does a character need to have a ability score of 8? (Getting a negative 1 modifier)
Is the character to over powered if I don't give them a lower score?
Your DM will tell you how to generate ability scores. Some tables like each character to have a weakness. Others enjoy the power fantasy. There's no absolute standard.
One thing a lot of new players don't realize is making a character without a DM or a group is for practice. You'll need to obey the DM's stipulations (for what species are allowed, what method to use for ability scores, etc.), but understanding the process of making a character is worthwhile!
Hello I’m really new to this and what’s the best way to make a character I’ve technically “made” one but it was years ago and my friends basically just did it for me
For example, once in a game and a DM says something like a custom array or custom point buy setup - you may already know how the rest of character creation goes, and thus can just change that tidbit and make a character otherwise
Hello, I am new
Hello, I wonder how to join a DnD game.
Ello there guys
#find-a-game has instructions
Oh, thank you.
So i am like new i heard DnD from one of my friend she said it easy pretty cool and Enjoyable, I have no idea what is DnD never played before nor i know how to play it, i just thought it is cool so any recommandation what should i do?
This link will cover the basics of what D&D is

So like how do you start playing?
you need to find a group to play with
it doesn't have to be constant you can play with multiple groups
go to #find-a-game
can i play alone?
not really
DnD isn't some online board game
each campaign is different
and you can do anything you want in the campaigns
so basically no rules
except for all the rules....
lol yeah
well it just isn't really a single player game cause it's no fun without a dm and other players
damn
you said you heard it from a friend right play it with him
Our timezone are different when i am awake she's sleeping
Well D&D is a great way to meet new friends, wether you use the group finder here or find some people to play with elsewhere. D&D is a great social activity
Can i play it digitally?
Yes
yeah
Nice
All the groups formed here are generally gonna be digital
All D&D really requires is voice communication, so its fairly easy to do
sometimes even that isn't required
Yeah, communication of any kind really
yeah pbp exists
some games work with messages
Ah eh
i dont have a microphone
you can play the pbp games
Nor i have that much confidence to talk
yeah i have that problem too
ive got a mic and confidence but also a weird aversion to vcs lol
I will say D&D is a spectacular way to get out of your shell socially, the layer of roleplay can help you with talking to others, and a lot of people are similar
i live in india so i don't really find many people to play with
I am not that intellectual
head down to #optimization to learn how to play the game properly >:3c /j
Yo you can play with me
oh you live in india?
Yes
yeah still 2 players aren't enough still a dm is required
I am not very socially so many of people just ignore me (I am interested in foreign history)
you can have 1 player and 1 dm but more is generally better yeah
wdym by interested in foreign history
I study other nation history that i forgot about my own nation
neither of us are dm nor know how to be one
And when we mix facts with nationalism i dont think they gonna like it
True
Does anyone know where i can find every race for D&D?
the handbook?
Go to game rule > speices
thri kreen are my goats
I just had a great idea for a character
Its said that tabaxi are created by a cat god
Cat god = cat religion
Cat religion = cat priest
Tabaxi priest who specializes in magic preforming blessings in the cat gods name
Egypt
Lmao forgot that existed
real
egyptian gods are multiple animals tho
is there a god thats a cat? idk
idk either
Japanese folk lore might have one
Tabaxi priest can be either a cleric or a paladin hmm
they worshipped cats but im not sure if there was an actual god
cleric i’d say, they lean more into deities while paladins are more about beliefs
Idk, I just read tabaxi description
Greek had some
Ailuros: A feline goddess from ancient Greece
Artemis: A feline goddess from ancient Greece
Athena: A feline goddess from ancient Greece
Freya: A Norse goddess who drove a chariot pulled by two large cats
i know of a goat and 3 different birds and an aligator of the egyptian gods
Veering a bit off from newcomer topic there (:
Sorry

What about dices? Any recommendation for the digital dice?
If you're using a VTT (virtual tabletop), such as Owlbear Rodeo, they usually have dice functionality built in.
But you could also just roll dice by typing "roll 1d20" in google
Woah okay thanks
happy to help
And you can generally assume that any dice roller is effectively the same as another, lets not dive into how probability and computers works haha
lol
i need help with armour class
What is confusing ya
i cant find anything about it
So, armour class is the number a creature needs to match or beat in order to hit an attack
Its just a number, nothing more than that
As for how to increase your armour class, armour of various types will give you different amounts of armour class
And some classes get their armour class from wearing no armour, getting it from their attributes instead
ok how do i calcuate my armour class
depends what armor youre wearing
Baseline its 10 + your dex mod
Anything else youd have to determine from your features or armour
im playing a human fighter without armour
Id recommend looking at the free rules for armour
You should be wearing armour as a fighter, as fighter has proficiencies in all armour
just changed my equipment i have chainmail now
So, the elephant in the room is that DnD has very little in the way of representing a flashy superhero style crowd battler like dmc.
Perhaps you could first look at the class list and then decide which one of these rough concepts would fit most what you are imagining. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes
#character-discussion would be the best place to ask
Be sure to include what parts of the characters you're specifically looking for, as just making a character 1 to 1 is generally impossible
Is there a way to play DND online?
Yes, many ways
The most basic being literally just voice chat
Up to stuff like super automated VTTs
Is there an AI version to play? Just to get used to the game instead of wasting peoples time
There are games like Baldur's gate 3 that approximate what it is like to play D&D, but people playing together is sort of a big part of ttrpgs.
The collaborative storytelling part is what makes them special.
Most people also dont see teaching new players as a waste of time
But of course, reading through the rules to make it smoother is always appreciated

Is there a Necromancer in D&D? Or is it too strong or something?
The idea is that I want to summon monsters to fight for me.
it doesnt involve any summoning though
it involves animating undead which follow you and obey your instructions (provided you maintain control). There's also the literal Summon Undead spell.
I love the idea of summoning Undead! Which race would you guys pick for a Nercomancy Wizard?
Whatever interests you
reborn is a cool one but what undyingnoob said
nothing innately is for that. I'd just recommend picking something which doesn't have features relying on / implying a martial playstyle. "do extra damage with weapon crits" isn't very good for a spellcaster in the backlines doing spells instead of weapons, for example.
What stuff do you have access to?
Are you running off Players hand book only?
Sorry I don't understand what that means, I just started a couple of hours ago, and thought I should maybe see if my favorite playstyle is even available in D&D. Sorry!
2014 Free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
2024 Free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Let's start there first...
Any races/species there that strike your fancy?
the Player's Handbook is most of the rules in the whole game. It also features a decent amount of Species options, it features the classes in the game, and importantly, subclasses for each of them.
Question: how do I RP with people online? I have a group already and they know how to make their characters but that's all I know of what I have to do
While the basic/free rules will be the rules themselves, the actual "content" to them will be more sparse. There'll be less feats, less subclasses, etc.
Where did your character come from? What's their background? Use that to talk about stuff related to that with the other player characters. You're out adventuring but maybe while travelling you talk about what it was like working on the farm (assuming the farmer background). Explore the world through the eyes of your character. Perhaps they haven't travelled far from their village before so seing some new races/species might be an interesting event. How would your character react? Things like that can help you role-play your character and make the game come alive.
Over voice chat or txt
Yeah no need to get fancy with it - just take a moment and think about what your character would do or say. And just share that info with the rest of the table.
More so with encounters I'd need a grid and I'm not using Google slides for that again
That said, "it's what my character would do" is on paper an ok thing - but too much of anything can effectively become a poison. So the solution is make sure your character's actions stay in line with making the game be... fun.
-# the roleplay and game itself would be fine it's more "how do I run the campaign over a long distance?" problem
-# I need to word things better
I'll figure it out later leaves back to non-existence
I love the idea of a pale-ish Tiefling Necromance, but I don't know anything about them.
Sure, that sounds like a cool idea. Necromancy is probably a bit different from what you may be used to in other games, if you want to go the minion route anyways; Most of the time you'll be controlling a single minion.
This is for a variety of reasons, but the most important one is that DnD isn't very suited for combats with lots of summons.
Hello I am quite new to dnd I have played like 2 games and I would love to be a good dm any tips from anyone that would be lovely thanks you.

Thx you
I would love to play with people who are also fine with a new dm
Yup! I'm happy to teach, but please be willing to meet me a little bit of the way there.
Not in a position to pull that list up right now. Which of several is it?
Where would I text to get feedback on stuff
(If there is a place)
What kind of stuff are you looking for feedback on?
Like things in campaign like enimes and lore stuff like that cause I don't think I got realy everything sorted

For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
i mean
there are different dice yeah? d20 d10 etc.
do you always throw the d20? or... there are times were you have to use a d8? for example
Quick and dirty rule of thumb: The d20, or sometimes 2d20, are used for checking on success or failure; everything else is as part of a result once success or failure is known.
Also, the answer to that is the very first thing in the link I posted
ill check it rn thank you
Hey all, just working out costs between D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Does anyone know the cost of all the sourcebooks(so players have all character options) and a year of master tier? so my players can play with me with whichever character they want
For D&D 5E, all physical books are about $600, digital is $300, and the Master Tier for a year is $72. Pathfinder 2E physical books also cost around $600, but PDFs are cheaper at about $180 total. Pathfinder has free rules online, which can save you money.
For DND 5e: Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, Volo's Guide to Monsters, Fizban's Treasury of Dragons, Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants, Monsters of the Multiverse, Acquisitions Incorporated (optional)
For Pathfinder: Core Rulebook, Advanced Player's Guide, Gamemastery Guide, Bestiary, Bestiary 2, Bestiary 3, Secrets of Magic, Guns & Gears, Lost Omens World Guide, Lost Omens Character Guide, Lost Omens Gods & Magic, Lost Omens Ancestry Guide
Wow that's amazing and thorough, thanks for the info. In general, is there a general consensus on which would be the top one or two books to get(outside of the core ones)?
Depends on what you're after. Xanathar's, Tasha's, and Monsters of the Multiverse are popular for the options they add, both in rules and character stuff.
To hit, to make a check it’s always a d20
For damage it’s always d4,6,8,10, ext
oh so ill use a d20 for see if i hit the NPC for example and then throw another d8 lets say for a certain attack? to count its damage?
The attack roll would involve the d20. The damage roll might involve a d8, it depends on the weapon you use.
oh great
thanks man
Or spell
Thanks for putting those all together I’m still collecting all of the books
meaning ill throw two dice yes? one to check if i succeed (or fail) and the other for damage
When you cast a spell, the process depends on the spell. If it’s an attack spell, like Fire Bolt, you roll a d20 and add your spell attack modifier (proficiency bonus + your spellcasting ability modifier). If your total beats the target’s Armor Class (AC), the spell hits. For spells that require a saving throw, like Fireball, the target rolls a d20 and adds their saving throw modifier. They compare the result to your spell save DC (8 + proficiency bonus + your spellcasting ability). If they fail, the spell affects them fully; if they succeed, they usually take reduced or no damage. Once the spell hits or takes effect, roll the damage dice listed in the spell description, like 1d10 for Fire Bolt, and apply the damage or effect to the target. It’s all about hitting, saving, and dealing damage based on the spell’s rules.
Tell me if this makes sense if not I'm here to help
Most welcome
It really isn't I might have made it sound more complicated than it is but I just wanted to make sure u understand everything
" For spells that require a saving throw, like Fireball, the target rolls a d20 and adds their saving throw modifier. They compare the result to your spell save DC (8 + proficiency bonus + your spellcasting ability)" this part specifically, about the saving throw
U didn't understand it?
For spells that require a saving throw, like Fireball, the target rolls a d20 and adds their saving throw modifier, which depends on the type of save the spell calls for (like Dexterity or Wisdom). They compare their total to your spell save DC, which is calculated as 8 + your proficiency bonus + your spellcasting ability modifier. If their roll meets or exceeds your DC, they succeed and usually take reduced or no effect from the spell. If they fail, the spell hits them with its full effect
Let’s say you cast Fireball, which requires a Dexterity saving throw. Your spell save DC is 15 (8 + 3 proficiency bonus + 4 from your Intelligence modifier, if you're a wizard).
Each creature in the blast rolls a d20 and adds their Dexterity saving throw modifier. For example, if an enemy has a +2 to Dexterity saves, they roll a d20 and add 2. If they roll a total of 15 or higher, they succeed, taking half damage. If they roll 14 or lower, they fail and take the full damage.
After that, you roll 8d6 for the Fireball's damage, and each creature either takes the full or halved damage based on their save.
No don't be sorry I'm here to help
And I've been playing the game for Soo long and I still have to look back at the rules sometimes
I know it's a lot of content, but reading through the free rules will help you understand things one after another.
There's also the learn-to-play sessions during the virtual weekends (see the Events tab in the server)!
Hey everyone, new to using dnd beyond, i am trying to make an npc who will be a party member of my son's. Lizardmen is not a race I am seeing though. Is there a pack I can buy that will allow me to select a lizardmen as a race?
Also, I have recently purchased the PHB, DM guide, and Monsters guide from a local store, is there a way to attach them to my dnd beyond account so I do not have to purchase again?
No is expected to know ALL the rules by heart. That's the whole point of the manuals.
Yeah that's what im telling hum
The Lizardfolk playable race is found in the book: Monsters of the Multiverse
Him*
Unfortunately, no there isn't a way. You need to buy the digital versions to use them in D&D Beyond.
so i just buy that book then they will show up on character creation?
that is correct
Excellent thanks
You cannot link physically purchased books to your D&D Beyond account. You can only get digital books on D&D beyond if you purchase the digital copy, or the physical-digital bundle through their website
No tag content found in category ddb.
I was afraid of that. oh well, its nice having the physical copies anyway, will just have to purchase the digitals as well
You could also use the DDB homebrew creator to recreate any content that you own pysically, to be able to use it on their site, so long as you don't publish it for other people to use
ohhhh, i didnt know that was a thing
Content Sharing
A player or DM with a Master Tier subscription can enable Content Sharing in up to five campaigns. Once Content Sharing is enabled, any content unlocked by anyone in the campaign gets shared with everyone else, and they can use those shared character options for characters in that campaign. Learn more
Well that's interesting. I did not realize that content sharing was multi-way. I always understood it to be strictly "GM shares with players"
Nope. Everyone in the campaign shares everything they own with everyone else
If Player A owns Tasha's, and Player B owns the PHB, and Player C owns the DMG, then all 3 of them can access all 3 books
for that campaign
Well, I've only misunderstood that for about 6 years.
Its a very common misunderstanding
especially because that is how the beta test for DDB's Maps program works. You can only use Maps if specifically the DM has a master tier subscription, and they host the game
That’s not a technical rule, if each player wants to keep their materials to themselves that’s okay. Generally, it’s seen as “morally correct” to do otherwise, but people have the personal right to their own things.
No one is talking about rules right now. We're talking about the digital content sharing program on D&D Beyond's website
I understand the context now, but I wasn’t talking about the rules in the game itself, just separate tables in general.
If Content Sharing is enabled for a campaign, the only way to prevent your books from being shared is to not join the campaign.
Thank you for elaborating, I should have read the convo as of far. That was my mistake.
(Though the DM of the campaign can restrict shared books from being read by non-owners.)

If you're looking for a place to start, the Free Rules linked above should be exactly what you're looking for, @finite sage .
For the the character do I have to do it on the website or can I do it on like docs
You can note down your character however you want
Though your DM might want you to make the character in a certain place for their use
I would do it on the website but it's confusing me
Is there a chef class? I have only found homebrew ones.
There isn't. But there's a chef feat.
Its important to remember that the class isnt the whole sum of who your character is
Its a mechanical abstraction, you can be any class and narratively be a chef
You could have a Barbarian that is a chef only hunts the most dangerous ingredients to cook
Can do whatever with a character
Guess a ranger makes sense since they’re hunters as well
what issues are you havin?
I do have a bit of a question regarding character feats whenever you level up your guy enough. I know that you have the option between choosing a feat or attributes, though I'm wondering about this:
Is it worth getting feats or should I just stick to increasing my character's attributes? Or is it more just dependent on the character and campaign?
Yeah, I remember reading a few feats that adds cool skills (like Blademaster) or an extra proficiency. It's really tempting, honestly
If anyone would be kind enough to dm me because I want to play dnd but I'm a COMPLETE newcomer. But I have learned a few things on tiktok. Pls dm?

I worded that wrong. My bad. I meant like teach me the basics about character making
this link here covers a lot of basics of what D&D is
generally feats are better than ASIs but thats not really something you need to worry about unless you play at an optimised table
People are generally happy to respond to questions people ask in channel here but devoting things to messages can be a bit of an ask.
Plus, if you have questions, likely others do as well and having knowledge off to dms makes the process of group learning impossible
Ah okay, apprechiate it, Fhyr
Understood.

Ello there
Hi
Does anyone know where I can access the players handbook 5e legally for free online?
you cannot
but there are free rules online, a smaller less expansive version of the PHB rules
The Player's Handbook (PHB) is an official sourcebook containing the full core rules of the game. The book is everything a player needs to create heroic characters for Dungeons & Dragons the world’s greatest roleplaying game. Some of this content is available for free as a part of the Basic Rules. Learn more: https://dndbeyond.link/discordPHB
^ 2014 Players Handbook if you wish to purchase it on DnDBeyond
And the 2024 Players Handbook if you wish to purchase it on DnDBeyond:
https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/all-rulebooks/3709000?pid=DB3709000
And finally if a DnDBeyond Campaign has someone with a Master Tier subscription, they can enable Content Sharing - then whatever books anyone in that campaign has is shared amongst them.
So... What species is there anyway
I am kinda new to this and don't want to make my character a marysue
For angelic-like species/race there are Aasimar.
For fiendish-like species race there are Tiefling.
See https://www.dndbeyond.com/species for a list of species/races
iirc Aasimar can have a more evil look with one of their subraces
Necrotic Shroud/fallen
Yeah the "fallen" aasimar variant
So do I need a D&D beyond account?
No - DnDBeyond is a tool to help folks but is not required to play D&D
D&D beyond is an online resource. Many DMs use it, and it can be helpful for making characters
Oh ok cause I am reading the guide I thought I might need it
Again it's a tool - many folks and groups use it. But you can play just with a copy of the free rules, printed version of a PDF character sheet (https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf) or some way to tack your character, some dice (online or physical), and a group wanting to play D&D.
Also sorry to bother everyone
But where do I put the Bio of my character?
The backstory? There's a place in the character sheet to put in your backstory
It's the section called "Backstory & Personality"
Ok this is going to sound stupid
But uhh where's the character sheet
I am sorry I really don't know must of this :/
I posted the link in my previous message here: #dnd-newcomers message
Take your time, read through the free rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules), try your hand at the character sheet, and feel free to ask specific questions here as you run into them. But please do give the free rules a check.

I'm making a character in dndbeyond, and I picked two languages (Common, and Yeti) as a result of picking Acolyte for my Background. When I go into the Species tab, under Language it says "Your character knows at least three languages: Common plus two languages you roll or choose from the Standard Languages table". It then gives me a drop down language to select to more languages.
So how many languages can I learn? Do I have Common + 2 from Acolyte + 2 I know anyway?
I think there's some weird interactions if you choose an old background but a 2024 class
Though if you did pick old Acolyte and it gave 2 languages, you may well get all of them
As a side note, I wouldn't recommend picking Yeti as a language as that's not a normal option (and you might get Common by default anyway)
I chose Yeti since it's an Icewind Dale campaign and I've heard there are a lot of Yetis there, it also ties into my background a little. But is it a problem because Yetis don't typically choose to talk or is it just uncommon?
You would need permission from your DM to choose a monster language like that
It's not one of the normally available options listed for players in the PHB
Thanks 4 letting me know! Will definitely check in with them if that's the case
Also, when you reply in an ongoing conversation, please try to remember to hit the reply OFF so it doesn't ping
Sup folks, names Aggro. I haven't played Dungeons and Dragons before and am curious about the Adventurers League. I am familiar with tabletop rules as I use to be a rather active Pathfinder 1st Edition player and GM. Looking to expand my horizons and was just curious as to what the Adventurers League is, if it can be done online, and how I could potentially participate, and any other games to get a solid footing of D&D would be amazing as well.
Welcome! The folks in #adventurers-league can help you get started with Adventurer’s League.

What is a good amount of rules knowledge to ask to join a game?
character sheet, and available actions in combat
is there a more ideal class for beginners or it moslty preferance?
play whatever class you want, spellcasters do have more you have to learn, but are perfectly fine for newbies if you put in the effort
preference mostly, but id personally reccomend playing a martial first, but casters are perfectly fine to play first.
ok thank you for the help
should i put an intro here? 🥲 i'm so overwhelmed by the whole lot of channels and whatnot, haha
what sort of help you need? navigating the server? learning D&D? Finding a game?

hey is it easier to learn from the 2014 rule set or 2024?
no meaningful difference
I was jsut wondering because it looks like wizards have more subclasses to choose from in the 2014 version
yeah, theres no meaningful difference
more options doesnt really mean much in terms of learning
I have a group of guys that are wanting to play D&D for the first time my self included but we have not had any luck finding a DM could someone please point me in the right direction where we could get a DM that could skpe in a be willing to teach us
this channel has instructions for forming groups
I’ve tried using that I can never get any I can’t even make another post for another week
I just wanna play dnd this shits hard tho
Everyone gets the same 7 day cooldown. Otherwise the channel gets flooded with the same people reposting.
Honestly, the hard part is connecting with the right group. There is really nothing else for it but patience and persistence.
You can also apply to games posted in #looking-for-players and you can post in as many threads as you think you'd fit with.
As I mentioned, the formation is the hard part. No one thinks folks aren't trying 🙂
I think it’s a new player thing but I don’t know anyone that plays irl so I can’t get into it any other way it’s just very discouraging
Bro same
chat, how do I cope with the fact that my LGS has canceled the last two sessions due to lack of players showing (currently hoping that tomorrows session goes off as I require d&d)
Game stores can be a good way to find people near you who are playing
Otherwise there's not much for it but persistence
Do they have enough players on the normal roster and attendance is the issue or not enough players period?
Unless you're willing to go the paid game/convention routes
That’s not really an option for me I’m like an hour and a half away from civilization there’s not a lot near me in general let alone a game store with people actively there
I’m very very rural
They recently started doing sessions and theres only enough people on the saturday sessions to barely fill it, so if 2 or more people don't show it makes it rough. so far we haven't started a full campaign but we havent even gotten halfway through what was supposed to be a oneshot
interested in dnd but i have no idea where to start can someone point me in the right direction? i have a general idea of how to play
we did like 1/3 the oneshot and because barely anyone showed but there was enough to play but only 2 of the people from the "oneshot" we just did a level 0 session instead for the only other session thats gone off
I say 1/3 but idk how far he said we got less than halfway through, The second half is apparently faster since the first bit was more RP focused and the rest is more combat focused

Then online persistence or the convention/paid game route are likely your best bet. You could also look at the community posts here not just individual games
Since they may be for servers with multiple games
ngl its making me just wanna find an online session for sundays because of how few times the local saturday sessions have gone off
Do they use Facebook to advertise to the local community? Or a website? More interest could perhaps be drummed up
facebook and instagram, Its just not that popular where I live, Im in upstate new york so most people around here are into sports and etc
that reminds me i haven't gone kayaking in a while
Gotcha, well, I hope attendance rates go up for you as people come out of the holidays
same, if not ill probably just try to find a game online, already tempted to find one for sundays since I need stuff to do and d&d is fun
been trying to scratch the itch by doing multiplayer runs of bg3 but theres only so many times you can play it before you know literally every single thing in the game and can kill the healthiest boss 5x over in one turn
Anyway
Took me all night to make my Character so... Where do I enter a quest or something 🙃
There's always the first two BG games 😉
And if you mean here, the looking for channels are what you've got
Games aren't run here
I'll probably check out the LFG channels in a little bit. hoping to have more luck here than I have elsewhere
Oh... Which server am I meant to go to then
I have terrible luck with both d&d applications and job applications, always end up getting ghosted
an example being for a homebrew campaign I got to the stage of talking about character concepts and setting one up than just straight up got ghosted from there on
still have the character on my roll20
That's common in DnD actually. Finding a good group is often the most difficult thing in DnD.
maybe after I've played a while i might try dming sometime during the week
have been randomly thinking about concepts for a time loop based campaign
There is no specific place. The looking for channels are for helping to find games, though it's usually best to cast your net wide
its 1 am so i gotta think for a minute but will dm if I am, ive potentially got a session at 5 so i should be asleep but eh
cant sleep if im not tired and i am very good at estimating when ill be tired which will be in 3-4 hours
actually considering i slept in late the other day, make that 6-7 hours
i can never sleep i have to like sedate myself
also I just got here new to the server and d&d ty for having me
welcome ❤️

hello slayers
Is there an official list of traps with their stat blocks and descriptions in one of the books or online?
Or does the DM usually just create their own?
The DMG has sample traps: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/dmg-2024/dms-toolbox#Traps
Ah, and they're in the free rules as well: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/dms-toolbox#Traps
Thank-you
I just started reading it and have a physical copy I can refer to as well.
Thank-you
I will eventually read the DMG from cover to cover.
I heard the 2024 guide is written much better.
I couldn't get to far in the 2014 one without feeling lost and such.
Yeah, I had a similar feeling. The DMG 2024 certainly has a much better structure. It also includes a lot more samples to get started, such as one shots and a setting (Greyhawk).
I only mourn all the optional rules the 2014 one used to have.
I recall when I first started DMing I tried reading the book and it gave me any info other than how to get started running an actual session.
The Starter Set was useful and fortunately the table I have has people that assisted me a lot.
That wasn't a system issue, that was a book issue.
The main thing I recall from 5.14 that I haven’t (yet) seen in 5.24 is the sets of sample pantheons.
Also the monster creation rules
it's both, to varying degrees. 5e isn't a simple game if you're a true beginner
Sure. But someone who picks up the DMG would presumably like to learn how to DM for 5e. The 2014 DMG wasn't doing a good job at that.
Hadn’t gone looking for those yet.
I would also add for feedback that the starter adventures are useful for learning how to run an adventure but could be polished more.
There is so much information added in that it would be difficult to incorporate as written.
Yeah, I've since switched to recommending Peril in Pinebrook to true beginners. It goes so far as to strip down any stats and numbers that aren't immediately necessary to know to play the game. Enemies have AC, HP and an attack, and the provided character sheets are useable without knowing a large part of the rules.
The issue with soem of the Starter Sets and adventures is if you were a true beginner who did not memorize much it would be awkward running the campaign.
It would require long pauses to read through the text to see what happens as a player takes actions.
I honestly wondered at certain points who wrote the adventures and if they actually played it with true beginners.
It's definitely been a process. 2014 had the habit of assuming that a significant portion of their players already knew certain ttrpg customs, as evident in the 2014 DMG as well.
It's gotten better over time though.
I get you but DnD has been in business since the 70s. It is a business and to expaned they have to bring in new players.
But I will wait to see if the 2024 stuff is written much better.
Have a look at the pdf I linked, I think it's a really good example.
I did read through sections of it and yes you are right it is written much better but still could use a bit more polish.
It honestly befuddled me starting as a true beginner that DnD didn't fix some of the issues earlier on.
Not saying that some people couldn't follow it ok but it would be limited for others.
I think it's for a variety of reasons. You had the various editions that inevitably became more complex as they continued over the years, with designers adding more and more extra content and rules.
Then you always had a pushback on complexity when a new edition was to be released, but nobody wanted to run the risk of completely leaving the experienced players behind.
Am I right in saying that I have to pay a premium to use people's homebrew creations?
Depends on what you mean with "use". You can look at the statblocks without a subscription, which gives you all the info you need to run a monster.
A subscription is required to add it to your collection.

Hey I am super duper new like I've never played before but only have one question for now before i come back to this server with a character made and looking for a group to play with; what edition do MOST people play here? I'm trying to figure out what edition I need to use to build my character. Thankyou to whoever answers.
I use mostly 5 e or the 2024 rules.
I played for 15 years on 1e though.
But I prefer to keep up with the current generation.
do most people play 5e?
Yes, it's widely the most popular edition.
I think it woudl be easier to find a game online with 5e.
Most online I would say play 5 e.
I do know a lot that play 1e but those are mostly offline.
Be aware that 5e recently had an update of sorts, so you'll see people refer to "2014" and "2024" quite a bit. These are referencing two versions of the current edition.
how is 5e 2014 different from the 2024 edition
Mostly wording/balancing changes. You can think of it like a game patch.
I wouldn't get too caught up with the difference.
Probably better just to start with 2024.
From what I heard there are improvements in the teachiing of the rules.
Since the update has been in the middle of last year, I suspect lots of people are still on 2014, but lots of groups are also switching.
okay i just dont want to build a character and then look for a dm and i built in the wrong edition lol
2024 is really a polish up of D&D 5e which was released in 2014 originally (thus the 2014 and 2024 indicators)
You can play 2014 material with the 2024 updates
okay sounds awesome ill see what resources are available and then make a 5e character, I just didn't wanna make it wrong thanks guys

Like where exactly I should start? I have the grasp on races and classes and magic and monsters and stuff but yeah
See the bot post just posted above - it's got some useful tips and important information on how to use the Looking For Game channels here on the server
Oh thank uuu omg
Uhhh yeah I read through everything and I just realised it was for tips in the server and not for just in general lmao
Thank u tho anyway I appreciate it nonetheless
- Spread your net wide, check other servers, forums, services.
- Be patient - organizing a game and coordinating schedules takes time and effort.
- Do some reading of the rules (check pinned message here to find a link to the free rules), and specifically get an understanding of how character sheets work and different dice rolls. You don't have to know wvereything but showing you're willing to learn improves your chances of finding a group willing to take you on.
- Be engaged with the group you join - communicate your expectations and wants from the game (but also make sure you're accommodating of others)
- It's okay to be new - we all were at one point.
Thank you!!!!
Today was supposed to be session 0 for a fresh campaign at my lgs but I'm the only one who showed
oof, sorry to hear. Scheduling is a huge D&D pain point. Did the DM at least show? did you get to ask some questions?
Dm showed but didn't get to ask much other since he was doing some stuff
Ended up just getting two packs of mtg cards on my way out
Back to fighting a screw and wishing I had something to do because of nobody showing for like the third or forth week in a row

I've been wanting to find someone more experienced so that i could pitch an idea for a campaign that i had in mind for a while but never managed to put in practice...
it would be set during the navigation era 1500s-1600s
the players would start as a group of sailors onboard of a ship who would sail around the world for a reason or another doing odd-jobs and quests for different factions
Great topic for #dm-discussion but also note that D&D is designed around heroic fantasy, not necessarily historical recreation. It's flexible enough to do more than that but sometimes a different game system may work better for covereing certain styles of play and themes.
oh
couldn't i just modify some of the mechanics or at least try to make the campaign to be like more fantasy like yet familiar world?
It's possible. But it's like modding a game to be more like X, when X may already exist!
danm
You're welcome to do so, of course. It just may be setting work for yourself that you may not need to do.
I have zero experience dming
Feel free to hit up #dm-discussion - there's some useful info in the pinned messages

But not rn I’m gonna head to bed
I'm currently trying to figure out what the "Concentration Ritual Required Materal" chart is on a 2024 dnd sheet.
It's in the "Cantrips and Prepared Spells" area. I don't think the server will let me send a photo.
The C stands for if the spell requires Concentration
The R stands for the spell can be cast as a ritual
The M stands for it has a material component that is consumed in casting the spell
Fill in the appropriate star to the left of the letter to indicate which of those attributes the spell has
Thank you I was trying my best to figure it out 🙏

Okay I’m such a newbie 😂 this server looks cool though!
was just dming a dm about a campaign and accidentally called them for a second because apparently discord has a hotkey to start/join a call i didn't know existed
When given spells from leveling up do those spells count to your prepared spell numbers? Or are they an additional spells and I can still pick whatever other spells I'm allowed too?
Are you getting the spells from a feature or from leveling up and choosing spells?
Leveling up.
I am going to level 3 of bard, college of glamours and the book says I will alway have Charmed Person and Mirror image as spells prepared
Thats a feature, not choosing spells for a level up 🙂
Oh! Okay thank you!
Yes those dont count towards your limit

Hi everyone! I’m new here and also new to D&D. I’ve always been curious about it, but I’m not quite sure where to start. If anyone has tips, resources, or advice for a beginner like me, I’d really appreciate it.
