We don't really provide that - use a reputable file/image sharing service (like imagur) and link to an image that way.
Make sure to follow the server rules and describe the link when sharing.
"In the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) fantasy role-playing game, alignment is a categorization of the ethical and moral perspective of player characters, non-player characters, and creatures."
Alright, i'm kinda confused of alignments
what's the difference between chaotic good and chaotic evil
They're best used descriptively rather than prescriptively, and are even better ignored.
that decisions are irrational, but for the good cause? or bad cause
(I'm only a LITTLE opinioninated on that front.)
Good or Evil is the overall moral implications of your actions, chaotic and lawful is the degree to which your actions stick to a set of codes, laws, or general reliability of your actions
A lawful evil character for example might have a rule that he only kills people that have slighted him
The action of killing people is still, evil, but he follows his own code so he is lawful
So chaotic does whenever he likes? Then what about Neutral (between lawful and chaotic)
But as Jeff said, you dont choose your alignment and act like that, you act like something and that is your alignment
alr
I think of Alignment as being the appendix of the D&D body - it's useless, but we can't seem to get rid of it without surgery either.
Pretty much, joker would be an example of chaotic evil. Neutral just means you dont lean one way or the other
Maybe John Wick for Lawful Evil, if you insist on using alignments?
I like to think of it as:
Good: Put others before self, even at cost of self.
Evil: Put self before others, even at cost of others.
Neutral: Help others, but not at cost of self. / Help oneself, but not at cost of others.
Law: Society before individual, strict guidelines.
Chaos: Individual before society, subjective morality.
Neutral: Neither extreme- do not harm society for the individual, nor the individual for society. Guidelines should be followed, but exceptions can occur.
In D&D evil is often more about "focussed on yourself above all others" then "burn the orphanage down just because"
alright
Is this how advantage and disadvantage works? If a rogue attacks from behind a tree with a bow. The player would roll a 2nd d20 for advantage for the sneak attack ability and use the highest number on the 2nd die and not add proficiency or ability mods, and then roll 1d6 +dex/str and 1d6?
And if a character is blinded, they would roll 2nd d20 for disadvantage use the lower number on the 2nd roll and not add any mods?
Mods dont change
Advantage and Disadvantage just mean you roll a second d20 and take the highest/lowest of the 2
To try and also parse the rest of your scenario, you also seem to misunderstand Sneak Attack. Being behind a tree doesnt give you advantage and you dont make sneak attacks. You make attacks, and if they have advantage or an ally within 5 feet of the target, you can add sneak attack damage to the damage of a successful hit.
And the damage you said would be Weapon die damage + attribute damage bonus (str for melee weapons, dex for melee weapons with finesse or ranged weapons) and then add sneak attack damage if you achieved said conditions
advantage and disadvantage are indeed 2d20 instead of one, and you either pick the higher or the lower, but you dont change any ability mods or proficiency when applying advantage or disadvantage.
the rogue also cant just stand behind a tree to get advantage, they need to take the hide action and succeed at the stealth check
though of course there are other ways to get advantage or sneak attack even without advantage
For the avatar, is it important? and if yes, do I have to make a new one myself? or I can look at the internet for one (choices from D&D character builder idk if are good)
It is not inherently important, remember that it its core D&D is a pen and paper game, and pen and paper doesnt have avatars
people tend to like pictures of characters though
and are there limitations? or I can use random img from internet?
Up to the table, really.
idk, depends on whatever online tool you are using
its not a D&D thing at this point
its a beyond or roll20 or whatever else
I see
Finesse gives you your choice of STR or DEX, but you use the same one for attack & damage.
is there a list someone that tells what i can craft with Tinker's Tools?
Yeah. Check the "craft" section of each tool: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#TinkersTools50GP
is druid a good class for a new player to play?
follow up question: how do I roleplay a druid well besides liking animals and plants and stuff

does anyone know how to play Artificer? i’ve always wanted to play it but i have no idea how to
artificer is definitely the versatile class, what were you wanting to do
i’m not really sure, because i can’t find anything on the main dnd website and you have to pay to get the role i think
Artillerist maybe?
Is warlock good for a starting player
Try and think of reasons they may have learned Druidic magic without plants or animals. Maybe it influenced them but isn't the driving factor.
It can be. Spellcasters can sometimes be harder but it's one of the more simple ones. The biggest issue may be how much choice you have when it comes to invocations and selecting which spells you will take.
Alr thanks, another question bc I didn't see it addressed in the player handbook can eldritch invocations be replaced and changed or are they set in stone the moment I choose them
this is very helpful, thank you
Happy to help
Ty sorry I probably skimmed over it
what is a 5e and homebrew campaign
oh ok
So what is the current edition 2024
ok
oh ok
Is there a place where I can fill out a completely blanket character sheet? One that isn't behind pay walls, I have a homebrew character and I want to fill it out by my own hand
Sure - the PDF character sheet can be found here: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Thank you!
Btw how has the 2024 sheet been? Compared to the 2014 one?
Yeah it's pretty much the same - some layour reorganization and I think 1 or two things are renamed. But nothing significantly changed.
I’m new to dnd.. I really need to learn how rolls work, specific dos and don’t, basically basics.

Hey is there any server here where I could find some advice on turning my homebrew world (originally a writing project) into a dnd world/campaign? like translating gods, races, all that stuff into dnd or a tprg, I’d love to know how others went about all that if there’s a place here to ask. I’ve only ever been a player, so I might be getting ahead of myself anyway and I should just run a regular game first
#dm-world-building mostly, then #homebrew if you’re trying to make custom races instead of reflavoring existing ones
Awesome ty!
My DM is making a one shot and each player can bring 1 rare or lower magic item. Any suggestions on funny/op rare magic items?
I used bag of beans before but I'm looking to try some other items out
Horn of Valhalla (Silver or Brass) to break the action economy with bunch of berserkers 😛
Just noticed the channel, might be more of a #character-discussion or #dnd-discussion topic than a newcomer one
oh sorry about that, I'll post my question there
hello me and my friend are completely new to dnd are any dm's willing to do a game with us
try #looking-for-dm ?
alr
heyy!! im the friend we are just wondering how to do it (we cant figure it out 😭)
#find-a-game contains instructions!
thank you!!
Hello 🙂
Where is a good place to start learning please? I watched some DnD streams on twitch a couple of years ago and really wanted to learn but had some health issues so didnt ever have time but now i have time and would like to learn 🙂

ah thank you 🙂
as someone whos also learning, baldurs gate 3 helped me understand combat a bit better although its still different from a tabletop, and also just watching anything about dnd on youtube. even the weird shorts that u dont understand cause u eventually will.
oh i heard something about this game 🤔
even if i know nothing its worth getting to try?
There's also these introductory videos by the folks from Critical Roll: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
thanks!
i mean its for sure a fun game i got it before i started actually learning more about the tabletop
Definitely, I knew nothing too before trying out baldurs gate
people who dont even play dnd like it so its worth a try
okay ill look at that too thanks for the help!
If folks want to discuss Baldurs Gate 3 we have #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers
Be aware there may be spoilers!
no problem at all, good luck on the learning and may we both be playing tabletop campaigns soon enough!
and ill for sure be looking at this i love bg3
thanks and true 🙂
hi im new
welcome!
i havent played dnd before 😦
It seems like a lot but once you start playing it's rather simple
The walk is easier than the talk is my point
Ye well I'm a bit nervous about starting out but I'm willing to try
Do you have DnD Beyond?

Yeah
Ye in the same boat here, i watched a lot of videos on it and it seems pretty fun to be a part of but all the information is overwhelming!
The introductory videos above can help.
ive been learning alot online but im honestly just waiting to get the books so i can read them a few times. seems like the truly best way to learn to me atleast. just HATE the pricetag.
plus its a source thats always there so they are useful always just...once again. the price.
Try the Free Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
yeah ive got that in my tabs right now actually ive been reading on those a bit and i got a starter set that came with a smaller rulebook aswell so ive got a bit of info so far
That's normal. I thought the same thing. So many options makes it feel is what discourages a lot of people from getting into the game
You don't have to buy the books. I'm a DM and a player and I haven't read ANY of the books
what source do you use to get everything thats in the books?
i aim to learn as much as i can
So, look, if you're a newcomer to the game, you don't need to buy everything. Start with what's given for free and then invest later if you choose
Learn the basic classes and what they do
Do you like to just hit your enemies and do high damage?
Or do you like to cast debuffs or support spells?
Would you like to shoot a gun from far away? Or ride a beast/dragon into battle?
How do you like to fight?
ive been learning about the spellcasting classes a bit since they intrigue me most to be fair ive been looking into some different stuff a bit. i will say i dont like how little health wizards get.
Wizards are glass cannons yes, high damage and debuffs but don't take hits very well
for sure, i mean its easy to keep distance of course, but its not always an option.
That's why you have a party to balance out strengths and weaknesses
for sure, so id say im mainly into all the spellcasting classes and i like fighters and barbarians a bit so i guess itd depend on my character or the campaign really.
they are a bit more fun when it comes to getting right up in the fight
Absolutely. Melee classes don't have much variety, but they do what they do very well.
Spellcasters have a lot of variety but not a crazy amount of damage
There is also multiclassing, but that's a whole other can of worms
yeah i know kind of how it works from bg3 i did wizard and sorcerer but i know theres so much more u can do in actual dnd so i know nothing so far really lol im pretty sure u can be a wizard, fighter, sorcerer. as long as its okay with the dm lol.
You might like Paladin then. They get a good amount of spellcasting, melee ability, and healing when it comes down to it
thats actually the next one i was gonna check out i dont really know much about it yet but it sounds good
How does preparing a spell work?
from what i know u take it from ur spellbook and equip it into a spell slot but idk how it works in actual dnd
same concept different way maybe
you prepare it and then you can cast it theres not an awful lot to it
u can only do it before battle though right?
at the start of every day
Yeah, but how many spells can you prepare?
ah gotcha so before u go out
that depends on your level and casting stat, i always forget how its calculated
Depends on your class. Your class page should tell you how many spells you can prepare under the Spellcasting section
Cool, and the prepped spells r the only ones you can use for the day, right?
yeah
unless u have scrolls right?
yeah magic items and stuff are exceptions ofc but using slots its only spells youve learned/prepared
gotcha
Do cantrips follow the same rule?
cantrips are always learned rather than prepared but yeah
So, still need to be prepped?
You always have them available, you don’t prep them.
u can also get additional cantrips from certain weapons and items and clothing i think
Certain features can give you additional cantrips yes, including some from magic items
I wouldn’t dive into those yet, however, since DMs generally adjudicate what magic items will appear in the campaign
yeah some things are just flatout not allowed due to nukes and many other otherworldly things lol
Nukes are not a D&D item, thankfully 😅
well really i mean the people that use spells the way they are written, and sometimes the way they are written allows them to technically do gamebreaking stuff. as long as the dm either allows it, or cant find a way to say "well thats not possible because of this".
like opening a portal to the sun or something crazy like that lol
Most broken combos actually aren’t allowed by the rules or aren’t nearly as effective as advertised. It’s quite a problem in D&D media space, unfortunately.
But that’s just the nature of sensationalism
i see, i mean thats something to be expected with a game where u can do literally anything i guess.
The most common “exploits” are usually from people trying to make D&D into things it’s not, such as a physics simulator (I.e. Peasant Railgun). Ideally there’s an unstated social contract that everyone at the table is playing with a good faith understanding of the rules, and is invested in each other’s fun
yeah thats why im trying to learn so much and also u have to remember that its not just a game per say i mean it is but theres other people trying to enjoy it aswell and u dont really wanna do anything that can drastically impact the fun or the story for anyone
yeah using strong combos and stuff is fine but make sure your table is okay with it (and that its not just some guy on youtube intentionally misreading the rules for views)
How do i find a content sharing campaign
for sure thats actually why i want the books so i can be like "huh, let me read that myself real quick" lol. that and i learn better when i have a goal of finishing something and that would be the books lol. but im learning as much as i can with the free sources and the book i got in my starter set.
Just a warning, joining campaigns for the sole purpose of gaining to access content you don’t own is against DDB’s TOS
Hi i hope this is the right channel to ask this in. I am currently making my first dnd character and for their background i wanted to choose Far Traveller, but i don't seem to be able to find it in the players handbook 5e. Is it still okay for me to use it after reading about it on the internet?
Work with your DM as they may or may not allow certain things at their table.
Far Traveller background comes from The Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide originally (https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/settings/SRC-00013)
So I’ve got notes and a basic character sheet from the games I’ve played in person, but I’m wondering if anyone has any suggestions where to find pdf Books to source my info from untill I buy actual hardbacks
That’d likely be piracy unless you’ve bought the books digitally from DDB or a partnered site like roll 20.
If you want to access certain content online I suggest asking your fellow party members or DM to see if they have the content you need and a master tier DDB subscription so they can share their content with you. For physical books I suggest checking your local library, or even gaming cafe
You can get the Basic Rules as a PDF on the Wizards website, but there are no legal PDF copies of the books.
One option you might try is your local library.
I made my first character ^^
Warlock tiefling western style gambler with a revolver
Congrats!
I just got a players handbook, the starter set from dnd Beyond and the essentials kit from dnd beyond. I'm curious if I need anything else to be a DM for Dragon of Icespire peak from the essentials kit.
So i dont need to buy the DM's guide, I don't want to spend too much mney
*money
the free rules have a lot of the essential DM stuff
Ok thanks for the help
The point of the Essentials/Starter sets are you teach you how to play. All you need to know are in the box.
Ngl I’ve really been thinking about getting into DnD but idk if I’m viewing the game the right way. I’m more so viewing it as “we’re trying to tell a story, build depth and plot to the characters rather than going through the game trying to find the boss.”
not everyone plays the same way. both are legit playstyles that many people have
That’s good, I was originally thinking I just didn’t process the game the right way 😭
D&D is a set of rules to allow you to do certain actions, how you interpret and interact with those rules is 100% up to you
I can not wait to roll critical 20’s and win every battle… for glory ! For victory ! For dnd !

my friend called me for a game recently, i arrived kinda late (shes gon introduce me next session i think) and im legit so confused how everything works, it feels like a whole new universe and im pretty sure i got a lil bit smarter while doing my character file w her lol
I’ve found some great adventures on DMs Guild!
Does anyone know how i can find local campaigns? I've never played dnd before but I've always wanted to, I just have no clue how to find people that play it
Local game stores are a great first stop
Book stores and clubs that play D&D can also exist
Oh there aren't any game stores in the cities near me, il check for any book stores or clubs tho, thanks!
Social media, too - my last home group get assembled via Next Door
See the guide I made here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?usp=sharing
What’s it like playing as like a mage in DnD? If it’s somewhat similar to Baldurs I might just have to endure, Baldurs had me using 3 moves then never again until I could long rest
Spellcasters in D&D do indeed still use spell slots
Each to different extents and specifics, but D&D is a game of managing limited resources
Pretty similar mechanically, yep! You've got your leveled spells with limited uses via using spell slots, but you also have cantrips that you can cast whenever (Though baldur's gate should also have those I guess). But also depending on your class or other features, you might also have free use of specific spells, like through warlock's invocations!
It's a balance between having a lot of power and utility, and managing your resources (spell slots) for when you need it, while also being less useful in a direct physical combat
You start off with kinda limited number of spell slots at lower levels, sure, but pretty soon you start getting enough to last until the long rest, as long as you're not just spamming them 😛
Greetings fellow travellers...stay a while and listen!
Hey I usually play spell casters and are trying a monk in my new campaign any tips?
Check with folks in #character-discussion
Hi someone said to check out this channel because I asked if I was allowed to play as a cat with a class. Two people said I could but the person who sent me here said I might have to be a druid and take the form of a cat. They weren't too sure if what I wanted was allowed. Sorry if this sounds unclear or a little too sporadic
Cat isnt a race in 5e, the closest would be tabaxi, which is a cat humanoid. You could shapeshift into a cat as a druid, but you would effectively be a normal cat when you do, though bigger cats like Lions or Tigers could be effective in combat. To actually play as a cat would require homebrew, and would probably fit better in a homebrew setting.
Only took hours of bumbling around in the begainers handbook and 3 youtube vidoes but I've finally made my first character sheet🙏🙏
honestly, continue to learn to do it yourself yes, but chatgpt is really useful for that stuff. then u can tweak it as u want. just gotta make sure the dumb thing follows the proper rules for the edition your playing and all that jazz.
ive made a couple just for fun and learning with it
hello im quite new to dnd but ive played once not understanding the rules. but i just wanted to say hello lol
Hiii im rlly new to d&d and have recently started doing some research on playing the game! Im in the process of making my own character so if anyone would have some advice or help i'd reaaaaaalllyy appreciate that thank youu!! And also hiii
welcome new member
Hi welcome.
hello there
Hey all, just joined the Discord. New to D&D (think I’ve found a group to play with irl) and also new to BG3. Any tips appreciated! 👋🏻
How do I find a group to start my first game ?
Browse the games in #looking-for-players it's the simplest way.
Unless you mean offline, then I'd suggest your library or a gaming store.
Ah kk ty
welcome to the server! something you should keep in mind is that bg3 and 5e arent as similar as you’d think but theyre both good fun
How do i check if a character sheet is actually valid for playing ?
ask your dm or ask in #character-discussion
Anyone up to awnser a dumb question
sure
Expect the unexpected and roll with it. Semper Gumby
New to the server. Have a character and such, but alas never played a game.
welcome!
Thank you 😊
I have no problem with new players. Everyone was new once and growing the community is always a good thing
hey guys
very new here
is there someone that can guide me to making my first ever character?
Not inherently but also consider that a new player will need more assistance in the game then an experienced player and if a DM and group is having enough challenge in organizing and maintaining a game with their limited available time... that could be a factor in not taking on new to D&D players.
I know how to play and everything tho
I've had like 4 different people be like " oh your new? Well nevermin sorry"
Have you checked out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel? There's a lot of good reosurces to help start you out. The free rules cover how to build a character.
thx
Quick question is vampire a supported race in dnd?
If so where might i find said content in dnd beyond?
As a player, that would be a dhampir but they're not part of the free content. I'm not sure which sourcebook they're in.
Thanks
so if i went to go play DnD at a hobby store with strangers, can i be a vampire?
You'd have to check with them in advance to see if it was an available option. Not all games use all species.
i can help anyone rn
id appreciate that
it's in the book of ravenloft
can u guide me through one game haha
Thanks

I'm a DM and I love new players. I've never met a DM who didn't like a new player.
@timid vector there's a few...
I'm sure there are, but I can't understand why. Most people want to spread the Gospel of D&D. Most people can't shut up about it and want EVERONE to learn it.
If you're not one of those people, IMNSHO, you probably fall into the "Gatekeeper" category and I don't even want to start with that.
I'm also a DM and I like new players. Actually they are more eager to learn, and less of rules lawyer type lol
Agree with all the advice given so far. My experience with the game is coming up on 10 years now and I can count on one hand the number of groups that didn’t want newbies, and that’s because it was a game between close friends. Perhaps if you’re struggling, try to see about seeking games that are explicitly advertised for newbies
Often times when I hear new players being kicked from a group, it’s often due to factors unrelated to them being new, such as making a character incompatible with the campaign, scheduling issues, etc. That being said, I don’t know the exact reasons for your rejections so I’ll give you some more general advice. You can improve your chances by going in knowing much of the rules as you can, ensuring any character you bring in follows any extra restrictions of the campaign, or simply wait for a session 0 where many DMs like players to get acquainted and make characters together
I'm guessing some people don't like to go through the hassle of teaching the basics of DnD to someone else. However many DMs will be more than happy to teach you.
Is text DnD a thing? Like I know people talk and usually have meetups and whatnot. Just wondering if there was a texting feature
In real-time or not?
Either way, yes, that form of play is called play-by-post (or PBP). I think asynchronous is more common, but I've heard of live games that run via text.
Honestly might start looking into getting into that, Either or works in terms of real-time or not. Where would I start looking at that?
It's often specified in posts in #looking-for-players with either PBP, text, or play-by-post/play by post as keywords. If you want to expand your search outside this server, you can find play-by-post games on the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search PBP or play by post as keywords using Discord's Explore function!
Oh alrighty! Thank you :)
Whats a good set to get if im a complete beginner? Me and my friends want to try dnd and I want to get aboard but I'm not sure what
Any of the Starter Set/Essentials Kit box sets are a good place to start. Gives you everything you need to start a game at a nice price.
When i started i bought the lost mines of phandelver starter set
Lost Mines of Phandelver is still my favorite starter.
Yeah i like that it has premade characters
I still wanna play through it 😭
I had a home game that started it, but peetered out around session 3 or 4
Hi guys, does anyone have the warhammer 40k excel template?
This is a D&D server, and this is a channel for newcomers, so you're kind of in the wrong place for Warhammer unfortunately 😛
oh
I always wondered how DM’s Really feel about players who love stirring up chaos, like classic seduce everything/everyone bards. Cause I really wanna play one.
Is there modules for VTT to purchase from DnD published adventures? Like...is there aplce to buy a "content module" for Rime of the Frostmaiden adventure?
*Foundry VTT to be speccific
It depends on the tone of the game. If it's a goofy game, then, sure why not.
Personally I'm usually not a fan.
What Eamon said. It would absolutely be critical to bring up during session zero because that sort of play can really detract from the table if other players (and the DM) are pulling in a different direction.
hello!
They don’t have a market place? I know roll-20 has them and it’s all set up to
Hiiii
Also this
Hi, Hope all is well! ARE Seers in the role play for D&D?
Not sure what you mean. What is a Seer?
someone who can see de ja vu, future happenings, predestination, predictions, etc
Ah I see. A lot of effects similar to that would fall under the divination school of magic.
So the easiest route would be to play a divination or chronurgist wizard
Or really just play a caster of your choice and prioritize divination spells
There is no seer class. But yeah wizard with the divination subclass would fit that feel pretty well.
I'm not seeing that in the Dragon Of IceSphere booklet, where would I find the rules and stats for that
That would be in the Players Handbook
The Player's Handbook (PHB) is an official sourcebook containing the full core rules of the game. The book is everything a player needs to create heroic characters for Dungeons & Dragons the world’s greatest roleplaying game. Some of this content is available for free as a part of the Basic Rules. Learn more: https://dndbeyond.link/discordPHB
thank you very much!
also another question
when using the avrae bot in server, not seeing where it helps players make a character per say, where would they go to make their character up, if it is in Avrae what is the command prompt for that?
Check the Avrae !help command (we have #ddb-avrae-help for Avrae questions and #ddb-avrae-commands for running commands). The !help import should explain where and how Avrae gets character sheets. Avare does work with DnDBeyond sheets (Avrae being owned by WoTC/DnDBeyond)
Avrae itself does not create character sheets but it can roll the character ability scores.
where would the character sheets be located and how would a regular member be able to access the character sheets in order to fill out the information?
The character sheets can be made in several different ways and Avare then connects to them.
Again try the !help import command.
Is there a DnDbeyond bot also?
Avrae is the DnDBeyond bot
DnDBeyond owns it
Folks can go to https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters and create a character and then import it into Avrae to use.
At this point though, these questions are best suited for #ddb-avrae-help
thanks for redirecting and helping!
Okay I'm using a sorcerer I got a question about the catapult spell. Can it in theory be used on an Arrow in a quiver that a rogue is using?
It says an object weighing 1-5 pounds that's not being worn or carried. Would it count in a quiver as being worn or not?
"Choose one object weighing 1 to 5 pounds within range that isn’t being worn or carried."
The arrow is very specifically being carried 😛
An arrow is light enough so it can be affected
But an arrow in a quiver is being carried, so it would not be a valid target for the spell
So if I request the rogue to drop the arrow then I can use it on the arrow to make a highly damaging arrow.
You could
Though there would be no difference for the spell's damage whether you use an arrow or any other nearby object
Oh I miss read the spell
Also this type of discussion would best fit in #character-discussion or #dnd-rules
One more thing is it a bonus action to drop something or an action?
It's something a character can do whenever for free - it doesn't take an action or a bonus action but can be used as part of either.
idk if its a joke i dont get but why do so many people have super long usernames
If you mean discord, sometimes it might be just a joke, sometimes it might just be someone trying to have more information in their name, or maybe some just like having a long name for the heck of it
Not really a newcomer / d&d related question though
How does one even begin to start when trying to join a campaign. Ik vaguely about character creation and I have vague idea of how the game is supposed to be played. Ik theres different styles and I prefer something less visual, meaning less to actually see on a board more to imagine in my brain lol. But pass that I'm lost.

I have a character I can send a PDF and I have a back story I need a DM that can work with it
You can find a DM by finding a group to play with in #find-a-game #looking-for-players #looking-for-dm
Perhaps yes, each DM and group has their own ways

guys, a bard does not need to prepare their spells, is that right?
Nope! They're 'known' casters in that sense. They choose their spells on level up, and don't prepare new ones daily.
This wording get's a little confusing as terminology has shifted a bit in 2014 and 2024 versions:
2014:
Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the bard spells you know and replace it with another spell from the bard spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
2024:
Changing Your Prepared Spells. Whenever you gain a Bard level, you can replace one spell on your list with another Bard spell for which you have spell slots.
If you are playing with the 2024 rules, all spells that any caster can currently cast are called "prepared" spells, but that doesn't change the rules on how the work for each class. 2024 Bards still "prepare" their spells when they level up, and can only change 1 spell per level up (plus the new one they get from that level up)
no, we're playing with the 2014 version
so we're clear on the fact that a sorcerer/bard has 0 spells to prepare?
In the 2014 rules, Sorcerers and bards both “learn” their spells instead of preparing them.
so that's a yes
Yes. They do something else instead
and clerics, them, need to prepare their spells, right?
Yep, they prepare their spells after every long rest.
so they're half casters?
No, that's something else. Half/full casters refers to the amount of spell slots classes get.
Clerics are full casters.
oh right
so AT or EK are 1/3 casters, and clerics and bards are 1/1 casters
but what are some examples of 1/2 casters?
artificers?
Rangers, artificers, paladins
Yep. But we also use that term because of how muticlassing calculations are done. These three count for half, AT and EK count for third and the other casters count full (except warlock)
For example, a 2 ranger / 2 paladin would still only be a 2nd level caster
Whereas a 2 druid / 2 wizard would be a 4th level caster
But it's good to remember that this only about their spell slots. When multiclassing, classes still prepare their spells as if they were single-classed.
so a 6 bard/4 sorcerer here is a 10th level caster so it's cool
you got it
does anyone know how to be a dungeon master on roll20
If you are asking for technical advice with a 3rd party program, you may get better responses if you ask in #third-party
Yes you start a new game, add a module and boom your a gm
Hey, does anyone know what the “Features and Traits” section is used for?
Putting in the text of class features & traits you acquire from your species.
Okay, ty
For example...
Darkvision if you're an elf
Rage if you're a barbarian
etc
Hi, I’m asking a total noob question: does 1d10(1d8)+3 mean that if you use the weapon 2-handed you roll the 1d10 dice and add 3 to that score but if the weapon is part of a dual wield setup, you roll the 1d8 dice and add 3? This is a Baldur’s Gate inspired question but I also wonder if it applies to tabletop too as that’s where I’m also heading!
So, you've got it 99.9% right. The only thing that's different here is that when playing the tabletop game, the number in the parenthesis is the 2 handed damage, and the default number is the 1 handed damage. For example, a longsword does 1d8 (1d10) damage
And a weapon doesn't have to be dual wielded to be used 1 handed. There could be any number of reasons why you don't use your other hand. A shield, for example
Ahh fantastic, that would make sense for the way around that you’ve written it according to what I think I found online. Yeah the guides for bg3 say that if you can equip a shield, do so where possible! Thanks so much for the info
Longsword + shield would be the longsword dealing 1d8+ STR (modifier) damage. But, you gain 2 points of AC from the shield.
Happy to help. For future reference, we like to try to keep this channel focused on only the tabletop game. If you have questions about Baldur's Gate specifically, you can ask them in #dnd-media or #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers
Ahh sorry, I had a blended question so I’ll separate them in the future. Appreciate the guidance though 🙏🏻
Alright, I've finally made a character, now I just have to look for game and wait, right?
Be proactive about looking for a game. You'll have better chances of finding one if you cast a wide net. Check other servers and other websites. Reach out to as many interesting prospects as you can
Technically most games ask you wait untill session zero to make a character what you have now is a concept. I wanna play as a x,y
Example I want to play as a blue Dragonborn paladin: family where cultist Kyle ran away. Has no personal ties to the module how ever he is a adventurer so naturally he would be interested
How many cantrips does a high elf wizard start out with?
4 in total, all from the wizard spell list
You get 3 cantrips for being a wizard, and 1 from playing as a high elf, so 4 total. You could potentially get more from an Origin feat, though
Thank you!
Heyy im new to this dnd discord style type of games, im looking to enter a campaign but i dont know how to... (im new to dnd too so, please lead me to the path of greatness)
Read through #find-a-game! You can either post an ad yourself in #looking-for-dm or reply to one of the ads in #looking-for-players / #looking-for-community.

Oky, again thx for the help
Hey there! im new to dnd and i'm confused on how to make a character i have rolled for my stats and i'm trying to do a lizardfolk paladin and i was curious if there was a website or something that could help fill in the blanks of stuff easier, i apologize if this is the wrong channel, thank you
Hello there. This is an okay channel for newer folks wanting help. Sometimes character building happens over in #character-discussion
Are you using an online character sheet like d&d beyond to make this character or a pdf/physical character sheet?
Lizardfolk isn't one of the species available as part of the free rules which is why I ask 🙂
Otherwise we can help with questions about the sheets.
its just a pdf the part im a bit confused at is the hit dice and temporary hit points part i dont know how to fill those in 🙂
You won't have any temporary hit points until you play a game and someone's spell, class feature or an item gives them to you.
You have as many hit die as you have levels. So a level 1 paladin has one 1d10 hit die. At level 2 you would have 2d10
Unless you multiclass, the type of dice used as your hit die will not change. A paladin is always a d10
ohhhh okay that makes a lot more sense! thank you so much i really appreciate the help!
hey! i`m new to dnd and wanted to know what things i would need to prepare for a game if i were to join one
Hi everyone!!! I'm new to D&D and would love to learn about the game. I know minimal things about the game but I'm here to learn. I have created a character but I may have messed up some things (if anyone could check over my character and see if it's okay to play I would be greatful just dm me). I am open to join a game if anyone wants me to join.

Set of polyhedral D&D dice (D20, D12, Percentile dice[two ten-sided dice with on counting by tens and one by ones], D8, D6, and D4), a completed character sheet( can be made at a session zero if the DM holds one), Some form of knowledge of the rules but preferably the Player’s Handbook if you have one or can get one, something to write with, and a group. A lot of things can be provided by the DM, and generally it is seen as their responsibility to provide. Therefore, this is all you will need to play the game.
I really like my character!
If you’d like feedback on your character you could post it in #character-discussion !
Am i allowed to post the pdf there given by the app?
Not the PDF file directly but DDB should allow you to share a link to the character sheet! Just make sure the character is set to public (check at the bottom of the first tab of the character creator)
Okay thanks for the support
hi i am new to dnd i tried playing a while ago but i didnt find anyone. so we got a starter set for stormwreck isles dnd set. I am the dm and my little brother is the player. we are confused on how does the combat work and how the zombies or any other of the monsters attack. i looked on the stat block and is still confused. we tried fighting it but my brothers armor class is 14 and everytime itws the monsters turn it cant hurt or damage the player.
Are you remembering to roll a d20 for the monster attacks?
To take the zombies from the initial encounter: when it’s their turn, each zombie rolls a d20 and adds 3. If that total is at least 14 (so, 11 or more on the die), they’d hit the AC you say your brother’s character has. If it hits, it’ll roll 1d6 and adds 1 to that.
Same the other way around except is what ever modifier your weapon or spell uses and your profincay example
Str +4 prof 2 so my attacks are d20+6 and my damage is 1d10+4
Thanks !
No problem, If you have any more questions just DM me.
Alrighty :3
Yo waddup? I’m not really new but I haven’t played a D&D game in like a year so yeah.
Welcome!
Hi
Hey, I’ve never played DnD, but keen to have a go. I am a big reader and love fantasy, and always wanted to give it a try but found it a bit daunting to start. I just downloaded Steam to give it a try online as I’m looking for a safe place to learn … I’m grateful for any guidance as to the best way to get started. Thanks, and great to be here!!
Hi and welcome E-man! We are happy to have you.
I would only ask that you edit your post to not include your exact age
Its against the rules to ask for or disclose the exact age.
Please feel free to ask us in this channel if you have d&d questions
Fixed - sorry about that.
Just curious, what are you using on steam to play?
So far I just downloaded D&D online … haven’t played yet
Just be aware that is very different from actually playing tabletop D&D
Dungeons and Dragons is not a video game. There's Baldur's Gate 3 which is a game that was based off DnD.
If you feel like spending some money, get baldurs gate three it translates very well into dnd
Dungeons and Dragons online is another video game based off of the tabletop game
but again its very different from actually playing D&D
Then buy players handbook if you don’t have it and use your love of reading to power through it and only memorize important stuff like d20 tests and what class you think you’ll want to play first, then slowly build your knowledge and understanding of the game
Then add on to your knowledge with additional sourcebooks, maybe dming if you feel like becoming a god, and have fun
"Dungeons and Dragons Online" is an MMO, much more based on edition 3/3.5 of the game, adapted for an MMO format, and using the Eberron setting.
It will be a fundamentally different experience than playing D&D itself. It's more like an MMO made to be like D&D, than it is D&D itself, if that makes sense.
Thanks for the guidance! Was aware that D&D is not a video game but was hoping that D&D Online it would be close to the real deal so I could learn anonymously and wouldn’t embarrass myself.
Now I know better!
It goes over a barebones gist. Talk to people, get quest, do quest, get loot and XP. Things are done via rolling dice. Sometimes you talk under pressure and a dice roll has to be done. Some things are better than others against certain foes - like cold damage being useless against beings of ice.
Of course, DDO (Dungeons & Dragons Online) is very videogamey, gamified, has a microcosm of the minutae D&D itself can provide.
As far as video games go, Baldur’s Gate 3 would make for an easier transition into the current edition of D&D.
BG3 is a very story heavy game, and is based off of 5th edition D&D, which is the current edition of the game*
*The rules of the tabletop game are also undergoing a "Revision", think of it like a major patch going over 10 year old things and fixing a bunch of things and making things more neatly worded. Working out of a decent chunk of technical debt.
Hello
Ello there
Hola
I'm new to dnd and I guess I could use some advice maybe help idk
Not really sure what I'm to be looking for

this gives you a good overview of most aspects of D&D
Can a druid get pass without trace at level 2 or 3?
well its a druid spell, so level 3 sounds like its pretty easy to get it then
Its a level 2 spell but idk if that means you get it at level 2
No, spell levels do not correlate to PC levels
have a look at the druid spells by level chart to see when druids unlock each spell level
Alright thanks
i think druids get lvl 2 spell slots at level 5 iirc
(every full caster gets lvl 2 spell slots at level 3)
my bad idk where i pull that out of then
ah that's where. brain is addled i suppose
Ima be honest, I learn best as I'm in the field
Its possible to learn while playing, but unfortunately its not a game I would consider best learnt while playing. Reading a lot and preparing for gameplay will help a ton
having to constantly ask rule questions and break the flow to look up stuff can really hamper the actual playing of the game
I'm totally new to DnD, and I have 3 other friends who are too! I've been chosen to DM our first campaign, and I kinda know the basics, but if anyone has any tips it would be greatly appreciated. I don't know where to start with story writing, or what to buy, or how I can possibly explain it all to them in a simplistic manner. I get really high anxiety and start worrying about everything, so I need to make a list of priorities to organize this. 😭😭
Sounds like very normal DMing issues haha it just be like that a lot of the time
I have the perfect video series for you: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_
Running DnD is fun and it doesn't have to be hard.
Focus on having fun first and foremost, don't get too caught up on perfecting the rules
Thank you!! I'll definitely give it a watch
Since they are your friends you should have some idea of what their interests are, try and focus on catering towards those
That's really good advice because that's what I'm stressing out the most over 🥲
The rules provide a framework to facilitate play, dont let them do the opposite and prevent play
As the DM the rules only matter as much as you decide they do
Of course the rules provide a shared understanding in how you can intereact with the world in the long run, but with friends you can just wing it and get there eventually
um hi guys anyone wanna play
You are only supposed to look for games in the #find-a-game channels, like #looking-for-dm or #looking-for-players
Hi guys, a newbie here, I wanted to get i to dnd for quite some time, got a dnd esseencial kit for christmas and i have decided to buy a full players handbook, should I go for the 2014 or 2024 one ?
Well that game is going forward with the 2024 updates...
So I'd probably lean that way
Do know that the 2014 materials are still supported in the 2024 updates
I was scared that the advenure that came in the essencial kit will not work witn the new handbook, and that ist not worth to buy the new
Again the 2024 updates were designed so that it's fairly easy to include and use 2014 materials (some things may need minor tweaks such as 2014 classes getting their subclass choice at level 3 now and backgrounds giving feats). But they do work together.
um, i was just wondering what expansion or dlc had "myconids" in them as creatures
Monster Manual (2014) has them
Thank you so much
yo I’m tryna get into dnd n I rlly want to play a spell caster but spells n management seem too complicated, what should I do?
Spellcasters are quite simple at low lvls you only have a few spell slots (treat them like ammo for your spells) and spell options
how do spell slots work? And how do they recharge?
Most recharge on a long rest, and they basically work like ammo a lvl1 wizard has 2 spell slots to use on any of the 1st lvl spells they know
Cantrips are unlimited use
Warlocks are different right?
do u play league, its mana
yes pact magic works differently
league?
of legends
spell slots are similar to mana in league, its the "energy" you need to cast spells
Please don’t insert things and terms that don’t exist in DnD
you get that energy back by sleeping (long rest)
I think a better example is something like "charges". Mana implies that all spell slots are interchangeable.
its like mana*
it's not
It’s really not
https://youtu.be/yj0q8hj-6a4?si=cdSdZr3yiNW9bk6M good video on spells and spell casting
alright everyone's entitled to their own opinion but it feels like that for me
mage bullets
Yes magic ammo is better like I originally said
with some spells, you could use higher level spell slots
to get a better version of the spell
If we refer to the rules, here's the example they give:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/spells#SpellSlots
When you cast a spell, you expend a slot of that spell’s level or higher, effectively “filling” a slot with the spell. Imagine a spell slot is a groove of a certain size—small for a level 1 slot and larger for a higher-level spell. A level 1 spell fits into a slot of any size, but a level 2 spell fits only into a slot that’s at least level 2. So when a level 3 Wizard casts Magic Missile, a level 1 spell, that Wizard spends one of four level 1 slots and has three remaining.
One question, is there a list of spells or do the dm/players make them ?
there is a list of spells
Each class has a list of spells in their description.
Some classes, like the cleric, have access to more healing spells, others like druid have more nature focused spells.
Ooh
But there is quite a bit of overlap.
Do you have a link for the list?
Sure. Here's the druid:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#DruidSpellList
And you'll see the other classes in the navigation bar too.
How do I play

what does arcana do

Recall lore about spells, magic items, and the planes of existence.

Does anyone know what is a one shot
Ya I wanna know 2
Sup
Hi!!
Its a game without a follow up game
Okkk
Where you sit down, play D&D for a night, and then never touch that specific game again
How do you mean
Its not a story you do over multiple sessions
yeah its just one really long session where you do the whole story
Btw, can we, like send links to images , I wanna share oc and ask if it would be ok to use them for dnd?
generally its better to design characters from scratch because ocs dont always translate well into dnd mechanics but you can give it a shot
So thecnically if your party can't Explorer a House in an hour
I can't do a one shot?
The alternative to a one shot is a campaign
I like just drew them today / they have nothing I added to them!
Typically a session is about 4 hours
oneshots last the whole day though generally
Yeah im DMing waterdeep dragon heist
Thats not meant to be a one shot
Hi
Happy new year
Hey this was the character I’m talking about!! https://user-uploads.perchance.org/file/4afc532e262b5e0a5cc8870f4f6cbe6b.png
There basically a blank slate, and I was wondering if Thier design would work for any of the roles. Paladin ect? Cause Thier kinda there own thing .
Happy new year
the only race with four arms is thri kreen but idk how well that fits
Idk
Non humanoid OCs really dont translate well to D&D most of a time
I don't play paladins
Thier a slime create, like a sea slug A
I mean maybe it could do well as a rouge
Probably
yeah theres not a race anything like that unfort
Slipping in and out of action using its slipperines and speed
Classes dont really connect to species like that
Aww, do you if any peoplle allow people to do none, canon dnd species
yeah theres homebrew but its best to stay away from that until you have at least a good understanding of the game
Oki :00
Alright!!
Like an exotic creature with high intelligence living in tribes
It migth take some time though
I feel that matches with base idea [sea slugs ]
ay happy new year folks
i have a question, how often am i allowed to post in #looking-for-dm ?
See server rules and #find-a-game but it's once every 7 days.
You may also want to look for games/groups in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
Be proactive
Also maybe looks for games on Roll20, Demiplane, and other online forums/sites.
Maybe even check your local library.
ah sorry couldnt find it in #find-a-game not written anywhere there i assume? but definitely shoulda read the rules a bit more thank you a lot 🙏
i wish my library would have dnd haha
im in the middle east so very unlikely
Its the first channel rule in #find-a-game 🙂
Ah okay - yes some locations may make it a bit harder to find a group/game.
I'll try for more sources online as well i've just been trying to play me and my friend in literally almost any campaign
oh.
i was skimming for numbers im stupid
thanks anyways
Ah try and don't use strikethrough text as it's bad for accessibility (folks with vision challenges have problems reading it and strikethrough text is not actually read by screenreaders as struck through text - it just comes across as regular text).
Alright of course 🙏
Anyway good luck finding a great group to play D&D with!
Hey! First of all, happy new year
Would you guys recommend buying the Xanathar / Tasha books with the 2024 in play?
it depends whether or not you want to use the new rules
Probably yea
The 2024 Players Handbook actually includes elements from both books. That said, they are great books and useful regardless IMO.
personally i’m sticking with the old ones so xge and tashas are great but with the new books theyre not nearly as necessary
As the 2014 rules aren't being removed, no it's not really a wasted purchase.
Obselete would be more of a ... whatever rules your group decides to play with.
hello I am new, and want to find people willing to do a campaign with 🙂
Check out the information and instructions in #find-a-game
So it’s cool information to have is what I’m taking from this
I think so
Yuge
It also has legal content to play with aside from information
Not every part was overwritten in 2024
If you check #dnd-rules , you can make your own opinion of that. 😉
Lemme check
Rule lawyering is typically used as a derogative, playing by the rules creates a fair and shared common ground for everyone to play by
I did not expect a whole channel
Each table can have a different relationship with the rules
The rules channel it mostly there to get what the rules are as they are written. In many cases you may not care about that, or make your own adjustments after deeming them necessary for your game
HI with a female monk is it possible to be a half seer half monk half elf
So that seems to be a lot of game terms and non game terms at once
So, the sex isnt really gonna matter here
What is seer in this context
And what do you mean by half monk
Well "seer" isn't anything. Maybe you're thinking of Wizard. Half-elf is a species.
Is it possible to be a Wizard/Monk Half-elf? Absolutely.
And yes half elf is a species, and has no relation to classes
have a few more questions about that possibility is this the area to ask it
Sounds like it
Eamon has the idea on what I am thinking about
So yes, you can be whatever race you want, and you can have multiple classes
with multiple classes there will be mixed resources right
Depends, not every class uses resources
But you will be less powerful in each specific class than you would be if you were just one
Narratively, what specifically are you going for? Multiclassing should be for mechanical benefit, not for narrative
Yo this i am new so new i barely have a character i would ask for some assistance please

the traits i'm looking to add to my character is a future insight, increased evasion, intuitive, increased accuracy, with magical fire abilities where the fire can not be extinguished by anything ( just a starting point then evolving as the character progresses)
Ok so, D&D doesnt really work like that
For the narrative of a character, I wouldnt really get caught up on mechanical aspects such as "magical fire that can not be extinguished"
flaming hands during combat with magical skill?
If you mean more like can use magical fire and follows typical monk traits of agility and precision, way of the four elements monk would fit well
Intuitive, insight, those are more just how you roleplay/stat your character
And monks like wisdom, which fits with those traits
with resources and protection the monks don't really use a weapon ?
Question can a have a race that’s not on the official rulebook because I really want a Valkyrie but I’m pretty sure that it’s not on a rule book is that good or no
homebrew style maybe
Hello and happy new year all
Quest to that what’s that I’m as new and ya can get
Hi Happy New Year
Valkyrie isnt really a race per say, but you just want to be a winged humanoid?
Aasimar can fit that idea quite well
Im sorry i dont really understand what these words mean
or tiefling
In the official book “Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse” Aasimar are a race of what are essentially half-angels. If you want to play as a Valkyrie, play as one of those and for your class I would suggest either barbarian, fighter, or paladin
idt barbarian is right for valkyries but yeah fighter or pallie
Nah barb fits well, nordic lore is barbaric
Barbarian fits because Valkyries are from Norse mythology and most barbarians are based off of Vikings
Okay so I just rolled my attribute’s and got really lucky with my strength and dexterity should I stay with the Valkyrie or switch to like an orc or straight up barb
yeah but i feel like valkyries are more about honour n light yk even if they were violent
Race doesnt matter for that
Race is not class
Two separate things
Ok
If you want to make a Valkyrie then by all means go for it. Just as long as you’re playing a martial class you’re goated
Sweet
yeah any race can be any class, obviously some have more synergy in their features but it doesnt stop you from using the others
So race be Valkyrie for race then for class it would be bard?
No, as we said Valkyrie is not a race
Aasimar is somewhat similar to a Valkyrie though
Also, dont build your character around the stats you roll unless you already have your DMs approval to roll for stats
Okay
Sorry for the amount of questions hahaha new to this all
How many DnD sheets would you need per character?
No, your character sheet doesnt change like that
You might want a notebook to take notes on though
Nah, I wouldnt have a new character sheet for those each session at all
Just write and erase as needed untill you need a new paper for inventory
And for HP and spellslots I wouldnt use your character sheet to track those
But if you do, just write and erase
Makes sense!
And if you are playing online, of course you dont need to worry about any of that
Since its all gonna be tracked digitally
Small question so new I don’t have a dm or doesn’t that matter alt all ?
So, there is no guarantee that anything you put into a character will be how your DM wants to do it, character creation rules are decided by the DM
Okay so my dm kinda tells the way my character is formed in a way
Yes, they decide what races, classes, features are allowed in their games
Yes it’s like a co op thing
They decide how you get your stats, how you determine your starting gear, etc
Okay so I need a dm before I start rolling
Okay so player name and sometines race(depending on the dm) are thing I can make on my own?
Ok
Most generic races are typically reliable
But weird races or races with flying are commonly banned from games
Ah okay so what I’ve picked up is that dm have the ability to do everything within the dnd rules
that depends on the dm really
They set the world to their standards, so if they say elves dont exist in their world, elves dont exist
um, hi
Ello there
I've kinda been on the fence over checking out DnD for a while, thought I'd come here to see what it's about

Thisll cover a lot of what D&D is
Thanks!
Feel free to ask any questions here while you read
yeah theres a lot of reading at first lol
Okay so what are things I should be looking out for when I start to get a dm ?
The type of game you want to play, each table has their own game type, wether its silly and loose on the rules, or serious and strictly follows rules or anything in between
Maturity is also a big thing, a big gap in maturity between players/dm can cause issues
And of course make sure you are interested in the premise of the campaign being played
That why I wanna play dnd is for the adventure and fantasy
I recommend by starting to take a look at this.
There are many types of DnD groups, from people who like to joke around and ignore any seriousness to people who prefer writing instead of talking. We have a channel where people post ads for their games but understanding the game is an important first step.
How long do D&D games last?
Not in terms of a session, but how do I know how long a campaign will last
Years??? Woah
the longest known game of D&D is like 30 years old at this point
Holy
I think I saw a video of that on YouTube yeah
I would say most average campaigns last in the year to a few years range
The numbers depend long games can last up to a year or half as much depending on pacing and roleplaying involved.
The world longest campang as mention lasted 30+
Let’s not mention the world largest dungeon
it can happen, but typically you hope to have the same players the entire time
So if I'm totally new to the whole thing, would I be able to find and play a shorter campaign that only lasts a few weeks?
try some one shots first id say
otherwise shorter starter campaigns like Lost Mines of Phandelver are good intro campaigns
thought i cant promise they will be a few weeks
ok, so I can search through the lfg channels for that? Or is there a specific place for those
yeah you can look there for one shots
dont be afraid to try and join a campaign too, a lot of campaigns do end up falling apart/losing players due to player personality mismatch so dont feel too bad if you have to leave
Gotcha, I suppose I'll get to searching :)
Hey how is everyone doing today
Ello, doin well
Happy NEW YEAR EVERYONE AND I hope everyone has a good d&d game going
manifesting a good campaign for the new years 🤞
is starting a campaign with the group difficult for everyone to come up with members, and campaigns at first, I know it is a work in progress, does everyone struggle in the beginning starting off with?
It can be difficult but very rewarding. In general, there are more DMs than players so you likely won't have trouble recruiting. Putting together and organizing the game is the harder part.
the hardest part is finding a group of like minded players who get along
like-minded in what sense? Like what direction to take the game in?
Those are rare a short game can last 5-10 sessions honestly
people of all ages, personalities, and backgrounds play this game
Ahh I see
a lot of the time these arent all gonna get along unanimously
For example ive been searching for 3 months for a more traditional D&D game with more mature players
I know 2 people who are difficult to get along with. one is KahlessSword.
I am very difficult to get along with
One short game I’m in lasted about 4/5 months (1 per week 4 hours)
Its not even get along with or not, some people just want different things out of a game
I'm looking for someone knowledgeable to help me with a Character Concept that I can turn into a build.
probably better for #character-discussion or #optimization then
unless you dont know how to make a character at all
So do you usually engage in 2 games at the same time? Or do you just go for one
character making is fun but I've never really played
its up to whoever the player is, its personal preference
I am dming one game, playing in that, along with a biweekly
Im not new new, I used to play a while back but there is so many different rules now. Its been 25 years.
Sadly biweekly is in hold and may not be for me (tomb of annilation)
Then again I’m in a christan server (that allows warlocks) so
still not really the place to recruit for that here
look for a DM over in #looking-for-dm
yes it takes time
I finally found the right way to recruit lol
Anyways
is there a way to get the thing to read aloud
im not sure what accessibility options discord has
but whatever you are using to read the messages here should work there too?
Welp I’m screwed this dm thingy got me confused I wannna see what being a dm is like and it’s different

?
whatcha mean
you know what sounds so good......... a pokemon campaign
Once I play my first game of dnd but I’m too dumb to know
dnd is fun bc there are rules but there are no rules
honestly that's what made me join this server, the hopes of a pokemon campaign
somewhere down the road
like i've never played a campaign where someone STRICTLY adheres to the books, like ik they exist
omg is this how it starts......
i've played in like 4. campaigns. but i have never been a dm before
Shroomish gang 4 lyfe
#slowpoke gang
Pmd? Or plain ol Pokemon
ya idk what that is
Pokemon mystery dungeon
OHHHHHH
Oh
holy crap that would be so cool
With my Pokémon knowledge I would die first
there are actual pokemon ttrpg systems out there
I wouldnt try and homebrew it all in 5e
yeah no that sounds torturous
There is a 5eish bb book kinda
yeah, pokemon 5e
I would run into a location with ghost pokemon even if it means certain death
Do the books matter I bought a starters pack for my dumb
for 5e? the starter pack you got is most likely the 2014 rules, which isnt inherently a bad things
You have all you need
but a lot of people will be playing 2024 rules, which you wont have
oh shit i found a 5e pokedex online
Reading through the player handbook will give you a good idea of how D&D plays though, and what type of game it is
It’s dragons of stormwreck isle is that a thing I should look into
I looked at it a few mins ago it has mons up till gen 5 I think
oh, a actual starter set
good
pre gen five >
yeah, that campaign is just fine, the rules you get in there are the barebone core rules
oh naah it failed to load it has up till gen 7
Please don't say that you are dumb, I'm sure you are smart, just maybe not familiar with the way Discord handles the game play.
Okay so the rules for discord and the starter set are different? If so what the main difference
no
discord is just a communication platform
its helpful for talking with your party, but most gameplay will be on a VTT or in theatre of mind
I don’t have a party
and those just emulate the regular rules
what is vtt?
have you taken a gander at #find-a-game ?
virtual table top
roll 20, foundry VTT, owlbear rodeo, fantasy grounds, and so on
you will often see one of those mentioned in a post in #looking-for-players
okay I am going to ask for a redirect
or theatre of mind
where do I go to ask questions about vtt
in that VTTs server or forum
in this server right is there a specific channel?
is it against the server rules to ask for a link to it
you can ask what VTT people prefer in #dnd-discussion or perhaps #third-party
just google any of the names i said
okay which one would be ideal for homebrew icesphere
no idea what icesphere is, unfortunately
are there free ones ?
roll 20 is the free one, but the free version is going to be limited, especially if you want to do heavy homebrew
Foundry costs 50$ from one person in the party
owlbear is subscription based i believe
i think it has a free version too
i've run a google search on roll2o it seems too restrictive for what I am looking for
hey what is the "Faith" section on the DnDBeyond character creator? Are there religions in the DnD universe? Can I put something down like "Power of money" or some kind of philosophy?
What does roll2o mean
Gods are real and acknowledged as real in the D&D universes
Some D&D games may play around with deities (gods) in their setting who may play an important factor in the game. That's where you would list which deity your character follows. That said, it's optional and not required.
Gods from where? Real life?
From whatever D&D game setting your group is playing in
Ok, but the Faith subsection is only about religion?
so, thats nothing that you have to worry about, that is for you to add more flavor and understanding to your character
it has no mechanical effect
Roll20 is a Virtual Tabletop (VTT) - a VTT is where folks can use maps and tokens to show what's happening in their D&D games.
put whatever you want, its for you
Oh, Neat!
Thank you
the gods in most settings tend to follow the idea of greek/roman pantheons, where gods have a domain (ie god of the sea) and you pray to/make offerings to that god if that domain is relevant to your daily life
clerics and such will of course go further and follow the god in a deeper sense
Interesting! I'll look into that later cause it sounds really cool
yeah, the kind of "default" setting for D&D is Forgotten Realms, so if you wanna delve deeper into that you can look up the Forgotten Realms pantheon/gods
What are tokens and what do they do or am I slow
tokens are just an object used to represent something, irl or on a VTT
"this rock is a wolf"
or "this paper plate is a pitfall trap"
on VTT they tend to be picture of what they represent
Yeah it's like a marker to represent a creature/player character
I'm trying to learn the magic system, I think I get most of it but is there a video or good resource to explain it to me
Even with the Players hand book I'm confused
I dont know of any specific resources like that, but if you wanna talk about what you need help with I can try and help you that way
Critical Roll has some fun introductory D&D videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
I guess one question I have is related to spell slots.
I'm trying to create a level 3 magic user
And when I looked at the Players Hand book it says lv 3 magic user has 4 lv 1 spells and 2 lv 2 slots
So does that mean even though they are lv 3 they don't get a lv 3 slot?
Level of spells doesnt correlate to level of characters
Two different progression systems
Spells cap out at level 9, which players get at like level 17
Oh, okay that actually helps things are making more sense
So a magic user's individual level is different from the spells level.
Yes
you get a new level of spell every 2nd character level
1st at 1st, 2nd at 3rd, 3rd at 5th etc
Another question is with prepared spells do you always have them with you? Or do you have to equipt some in between rests?
(Not sure if this is a dumb question)
It depends on the specific caster
For example, cleric gets to choose from all cleric spells to prepare their set of prepared spells every single day
Wizards get to choose from their spell book each day
Bard keeps the same list forever, with the ability to add/swap when they level up
If you miss an attack does it still take a spell slot?
yes, if you cast a spell, regardless of result, it uses the spell slot
that means if they save against the spell, or if you miss the spell, its used
Azurelen what is the difference between sorceress and wizard
wizard is someone who academically studies magic and uses their knowledge of magic to cast spells
sorcerer/ess uses innate magic they were born with to cast spells
okay with the elements i explained earlier would the sorceress be within that realm
of monk half elf and wizard or monk half elf sorceress
you were looking for a seer type vibe?
yes
Diviniation wizard would fit that the best
im filling out the dndbeyond character sheet online now and its a bit confusing at first
just be aware that a monk/wizard is gonna have some serious identity issues
and is not gonna be that great
which is the greatest?
multiclassing you generally want to multiclass 2 classes which share a similar playstyle and stat desire
I'm going to bounce some ideas off to ya first so ya can see what I am looking for
wizard uses INT, and monk uses WIS DEX
so you are already stretched thin stat wise, and of course you dont want to have low CON
and wizard wants to play behind and avoid combat, while monk wants the opposite
but at this point, this conversation is probably better suited for #character-discussion
lighting feet, fire hands, elemental head, foresight seer type vibe
I won't be able to pick up or hold any staff or anything but would be able to use a staff of blocking
good evasive skills with intuition
with that im not too sure what class or role i would be good in
that is where I get lost lol
Anyone on?
Yeah
Hi
Hi
Ello there
I'd discourage multiclassing as your first character, it can be a bit unintuitive at times when you don't have the grips on how the game works.
Seconded. The odds are high that the whole will be less than the sum of its parts.
hi im new to dnd, was just wondering r there any limits to your character

There's plenty of limits! Characters are built using the rules for creating a character, which you can find in the Free Rules above!
im new and im wondering what are some things to stay away from as a newcomer, just so i don't overcomplicate it etc.
If you want to keep it simple, I'd avoid classes that use spellcasting, since that's one of the most complex systems in the game. Some good classes for a beginner are Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue, or Monk.
Hello players and fellow dms! I would like to report that my first session dming and in dnd with my players whom also know nothing...WENT WELL
I will admit, the roleplaying bit was a bit difficult when they started doing unexpected things but it was infinitely more fun that way!
I can now proudly say i am a dm. Thank you and godbless
Also happy new year!
Does Alter self add to your charisma modifier in the 2014 version for natural weapons?
Nope. It uses your Strength for the hit and damage rolls as per normal
no shot
That's one of the nice upgrades the updated version got.
damn that’s annoying, I was gonna try to flavor it using draconic sorcerer n use a dragon claw attack
Unfortunately there's not a lot of options for gaining natural weapons after character creation
As a counter argument to Dosh: the best class for a beginner is the one they’re most interested in. And to echo Fhyr, avoid multiclassing because the odds are high that the whole will turn out to be less than the sum of its parts.
Hello anytip for a cleric
