The bot post above includes a link to the free rules. Chapter 1 is an introduction to how to play, generally. Chapter 2 is how to create a character. I'll tag the demo in a second. If you're more of a video person, Ginny Di posted the following to YouTube about 3 weeks back under a title to the effect of "Absolute Beginner's guide ot D&D": If you're more of a video person, then Ginny Di posted this video a few weeks back under a title like "D&D for the absolute beginner." : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNNBjVmNbQI
?tag new demo
47 written chapters of a fic and i was like "Okay, perhaps i should try that one tabletop game i told myself i would" and now i'm here. Currently watching Ginny's video.
I see
Ive watched some videos on how to play the game
When she was a guest on John Bernthal's podcast, Deborah Ann Woll gave him an explainer, too, showing some of what it looks like in pracice.
and how making a character works
More of a video person here, because Brave doesn't seem to allow Web G.L2...anyways!
is there a site that i can make my character on that has the artificer class?
since beyond doesnt have artificer as an option
at least to my knowledge
it doesn't? Oh shi, i was gonna make artificer too.
Nope, not unless you have access to the content by paying for it or via content-sharing.
ah,,
oh.
paywall moment ig,
sooooo, what we gonna do now..
D&D Beyond has artificer, but its not free content.
There's a downloadable character sheet. Many public libraries have, or can interlibrary loan, D&D books.
im just very slow and its very difficult for me to do stuff without help
Renting the books from a library + filling out a manual character sheet (either physical or digital) would be a way to play an artificer for free
time to find that sheet
Same, guess ima do rogue
athletic deceiving rogue sounds like my dream inquisitor from sw
i rlly wanted to do a techy tired girl who just wants her suitcase back and then develops into a serious person for a few points in the story due to personal beef from her backstory and then she goes back to being tired and chill
shes the tired cleric that is fed up with the party </3
Rogue is in the free rules.
Since artificer isn't a core class, it's not guaranteed to be an option at all tables. It's not a bad idea to create multiple character concepts rather than just one.
I just wanted to do artificer who's kinda bananas cuz it reminded me of Tiny Tina, period.
already talked to my dm and he thought itd be interesting to pair artificer and cleric
oohh, hooray!
If you'd like a way to pursue the "techy tired girl" aspect while sticking in a core class, the Cleric class has a domain that leans in that sort of crafty direction called the Forge Domain.
how does that work
(and, link to form-fillable PDF): #dnd-newcomers message
Note that Forge Domain also isn't part of the Free Rules... 🙊
why am i interested in only the paid stuff im so cooked
But may be easier to make work since cleric is a core class and artificer isn't.
If you've already got a GM, they may own the books either is printed in. Xanathar's Guide to Everything for Forge Domain; Tasha's Cauldron of Everything for Artificer.
Or, again, library.
to be fair he did say he found it interesting
so im asuming he has the book for artificer and he has been playing dnd for a while, especially as a dm

Alright gyro
how does deciding a characters stats work again im very lost while deciding my characters stats on the sheet
i tried following a tutorial but im still lost,
It's step 3 in making a character: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#Step3DetermineAbilityScores
Essentially you have three options, standard array, random generation and point cost.
Typically, your DM will say which one to use. If you're not sure or have no DM yet, use standard array.
After you have determined the scores, you get to decide which abilities you want to assign them to. Which ones are important will depend on what class you want to play.
That's fine, what I linked are the rules regardless of where you fill out your sheet.
No worries, that's what the channel is for
oh icic
thank you
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
so for standard array i can just pick which number goes where according to my class and i dont have to generally follow a set number, for example typically artificer would have high dexterity but i can opt in for charisma instead?
did i get that right?
Yeah, it's up to you where to put the scores. The classes generally have a recommended score or scores that should be prioritized as a suggestion.
i see, well i plan on multiclassing with cleric rather than going alchemist as a subclass
Yeah, while you don't have to put certain pegs in certain holes, it's still highly recommended to make your class features have the high numbers.
i mostly intend to focus on intelligence wisdom and charisma
since those are highly valuable in both classes i reckon
Charisma doesn't actually do anything for Cleric or Artificer
Charisma does things for Sorcerer, Warlock, and Paladin
i mustve read something wrong then
then instead of charisma i can opt in for dexterity
thank you for the help btw it means alot
All things considered, multiclassing between two different 'primary abilities' leaves you very MAD - Multiple Ability Dependent.
If you multiclassed into Artificer/Wizard, you'd be double stacking on benefits of Intelligence.
i see
well its more so connected to the character herself!
the flaw of not being able to multi stack stuff like that is apart of her as a whole
Another example is on Wisdom, you could do Cleric, or Druid, or Monk, altogether, as each of them do like them some Wisdom
thats definitely good to know though
Since generally speaking, everyone ever wants the "don't die" stat, Constitution
Then the amount of Dexterity is also important outside of very few builds (heavy armor basically).
You either want
A: high dexterity, in general.
B: you want 14 dex if you wear medium armor
B2: or 16 dex if you get the feat to let medium armor give you that little extra AC
C: or you don't care about dex if you wear heavy armor
And then your Primary Ability (if it isn't already Dexterity, like if you're a Monk, Rogue, or a Fighter specifically going for finesse or ranged weapons) is to be the highest. Like your "Casting Stat".
So for most classes we're already split around 3 different abilities we want to be on the positive numbers
Adding another who primarily wants yet another, 4th ability, means you get spread thin
i see
is anyone willing to join a group chat with me and my friend and explain dnd basics dumbed down for us

hello!
Hello, I'm new to this Dd topic. Could you give me a quick summary of how to get started and what the topic is about?
Check the video links above, they're super helpful.
It's a role-playing game. One person, the Dungon Master (DM) tells the other players what they see and hear and experience in a fictional world. The players each have their own characters, maybe one is an elf archer, another a dwarf cleric, and the third a human skilled in magic. They do adventures together! Sometimes dice are rolled to determine the outcomes of actions.
Glad I joined this server, I’ve always been interested in the topic of role-playing games.
Where can I create my character?
theres multiple sites to create a character, or you can fill out a sheet if you delve deep into it, its a complicated process but that also has guides
I mean, do I create the character on a website and then send it in some Discord channel, or what do I do?
You can make a character using the physical 5e character sheet (also available as a PDF) or use a digital character creator that's integrated into official or partnered websites such as D&DBeyond or roll20. I recommend the former due to how streamlined it is
As for the rules behind character creation, check out #learn-to-play or this channel's pins which contain a bunch of useful resources, including a link to the Basic Rules
I recommend making a character as you go through them as it's great rules practice. It can be nice to join a group instantly with a DM that can teach you, the more work you do on your end before joining a game the easier the job on the DM. Once you feel ready, check out #find-a-game to use this server for help finding a group to play with.

Depends on what the topic is - check #channel-guide to see all our many channels for specific D&D topics
I uhh cant really find something for it, mind if i explain it so someone can get me the right channel?
Start in #dnd-discussion then - folks can direct you to better channels based on the topic
Thx
ok so im looking at the race stuff, when it says pick any 3 skills does that mean any 3 skills from the two attributes the races gives us save throws on or any skill from any attribute? (ex; human gives dex and charisma throws, but i want a skill from wisdom)
It means any three.
alright thank you
Since with purity of body I’m immune to all poison and diseases do you think uranium poisoning would qualify under that?
Hi can anyone tell me where to go to get started?
Up to your DM since there are no rules for uranium poisoning
Check #learn-to-play as well as this channels pins for a bunch of useful resources, including the Free Rules!
Thxs
Okay because I was thinking about trying to make uranium brass knuckles and just giving everyone bone cancer
cancer is more of a long term thing than a combat thing. If anything you'll just give your friends cancer as you travel with them.
D&D isn't much of a simulator, if I had to condense a lot of the philosophy behind the game
It’s also highly up to your DM since there are no mechanics for using uranium and radiation if it even exists in your DM’s world
That too
The "best possible use case" for giving someone cancer is... well, long term poisoning.
But either way, if you have that much access, they're either vulnerable to just getting ambushed and manually killed, or too powerful for that and probably have some means of detecting or proofing themselves against it anyway.
Hi where can I ask someone to look at my character sheet to see if it’s ok?
#character-discussion is a great place to get character feedback
Thanks
Hi
Welcome!
Hru?
I'm not sure where the best place to ask this is, but is there an easy way of find in-person groups near me?
How i wish there was a dating app but instead of finding dates it was finding d&d groups
yknow the reason i asked was because i was actually thinking of developing something like that 😭
Also let me know how that goes if you do
its the name of the 'dating' app thing i was gonna develop 😭
if oyu think thats bad you should see how many hours i have logged in obsidian
o h n o . . .
Eh could be worse, we had a guy in our campaign ask the dm to repeat everything he said three times so he can write it down on notes
(We made the dm upset with us)
eugh
i have a discord forum thing and basically afte every sesh i update it with new info
Real, but we made the dm upset because we all had Silvery Barbs or Lucky and made him reroll like, 6 times
To be fair it was the last enemy with like 4 HP left, and we wanted to drag out the session because the dm was starting to hurry it up. (Three of the other 5 were the dm's brothers.)
ah i see 😭
And Ive known the dm for like 7 years so we all mess with eachother a lot
We used to use the portable fortresses to nuke their BBEG by having one person throw it and expand it, next person shrink it and grab it and give it to the next- rinse repeat
(We love messing with our dm)
my players just yap alot 😭
All but me in my party are murder hobos.
mind you that includes then paladin
me, the bard, am the only sane one
OK
Question
Can i use toll the dead as a bonus action
I think theres a rule on how you can cast spells as bonus action
Like cantrips
Some spells have a casting time of a bonus action, like Shillelagh.
Toll the Dead has a casting time of an action.
The only way to change the casting time would be to use something like the sorcerers quickened spell metamagic, but sorcerers don't usually get access to Toll the Dead.
If something says you can, then you can.
Otherwise you can only do it in the way things allow you to do it.
Does anyone know how to play old school dnd?
Folks in #dnd-elder-editions discuss older D&D editions
I want really try playing this dnd stuff but with a new player group

The "what's DnD" section also has a little game that tries to give you a rough idea.
ok explain to me about expeditious retreat
because i am confused about the duration, when dash, bonus action
It lasts 10 minutes, or until you lose concentration. When you cast the spell, you immediately take the dash action 'for free'. Every turn afterwards while the spell lasts, you can take the dash action as a bonus action.
ok how would i lose concentration?
For various reasons, most commonly by being damaged:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#Concentration
If you take damage, you must succeed on a Constitution saving throw to maintain Concentration. The DC equals 10 or half the damage taken (round down), whichever number is higher, up to a maximum DC of 30.
You lose concentration whenever you cast a second spell that requires concentration, or when you fail to maintain concentration after taking damage.
You can also drop concentration at any time should you want to
ah thanks
Hi, I am new to dnd itself.
And want to play it, but unluckily Its not very famous in India
Libraries, hobby/game stores, and school clubs are good options. Barring those, you can also use websites with localities (Facebook, MeetUp, Reddit, etc.) to search for in-person gaming.
I literally found my last in-person group on NextDoor. People moving during the pandemic (and because I'm a townie in a college town) made it fall apart, but it's another option.
I’ve never used NextDoor, but I mentally filed it under “etc.”!
Yeah, just calling it out as an option.
Anybody here local to Phoenix looking for newcomers in their campaign?
You are best off looking at game stores, comic shops, and even libraries in your area. Also we don't allow soliciting/organizing of games outside of our Looking For Game channels. See #find-a-game for mor info on how to use those channels.
How to post? There's no writing space

is there online version?
D&D is played in the imagination. You can play online, so long as you have a way to communicate with other people.
I’m a newbie 🥲
Plenty of people play it online, yeah.
?tag new online
☝️ There's an article here that covers some of the more popular tools for doing so.
Helllloooo
How-dee!
Does anyone know where or who I can play with that is beginner friendly
Many groups are fine taking on new to D&D folks.
You can increase your chances of finding a group/game to join by looking through the free basic rules and learning how to create a character sheet and learning core game mechanics like attack rolls, skill checks, and saving throws. You don't have to know everything but having a feel for the game mechanics will help you and your group.
I can't speak for all groups, but every group I've been a part of have always loved having new players. Spreading the Gospel of 5e is our jam.

yaya D&D
I'm looking for a campaign to join on D&D beyond
Man, it's so hard to find a campaign to play in in the find a game channel.
like 90% of the posts have a 18+ thing slapped onto it (Understandably so!)
And the ones that don't seem to be filled up in like 5 minutes.
As someone new, I was wondering if it was possible to play DND with only one player and gm?
It’s possible but it’ll be difficult as an adventure typically assumes a full party. Your DM might want to make use of sidekick rules from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything
Hey i have a question ^^
Then you're in the right channel
So im making a build in dndbeyond for the first time im so confuse
Are you confused about anything in particular?
Everything im tryna make a cleric build but idk where to start there so much on the screen
Hm alright, I assume you're currently on the "Home" screen of the character creator?
Well im on class some how
Ok, so you clicked on cleric and now you're seeing "Core Cleric Traits" and "Divine Order" and more?
Im seeing the class features and stuff
Alright! So yeah, there are quite a lot of things here, but if you're starting on level 1, those should be fairly limited.
I was trying to make this build something about peace domain but i dont know where to start
Im trying to look online but it seems i gotta purchase stuff to get some of the builds and im so confused
Oh yeah, that is correct, unfortunately. So DDBeyond has Free Rules to use, but most of the class options are not available for free.
The only subclass available for free is the Life Cleric subclass.
There are class options strewn throughout multiple books. Peace cleric, for example, has been released in a product called Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything
Yeah, it's very good at healing.
Is there like a website that shows how to build such
Well, DDBeyond is the best character builder in terms of convenience. And other websites would only have access to the same free content anyway.
If you're looking for general "what does a cleric need" advice, have a look in the cleric section of the player's handbook: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Cleric
Actually, chapter 2, building a character, is also a good place: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#Step1ChooseaClass
Thx
For example, it tells you that a clerics main ability is wisdom, so that one should be the highest.

DnD isn't a video game?

Personally I use DnD Beyond. Each person has their own preferences. DnD Beyond is useful for players that use Discord. You do have to pay to access most of the content.
If you want to expand your search outside this server, you can find play-by-post (PBP) games on the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search PBP or play by post as keywords using Discord's Explore Discoverable Servers function!
credit to iamrazorwing for the great list
Oh, you can click on it and it will take you to that channel.
#find-a-game has detailed instructions.
Yes but I don't know how to set up a game
The channel tells you how. Essentially, you need to input a command. Look at the "Submitting a post" section.
That channel just has info on how to post your own "ad". You're not setting up a game.
If you simply just want to know how to play DnD read this instead.
Man its hard to find a game that is in the right time signature
How because when i try to make a post it's mosty for dms
Thx
Also check #looking-for-community as some of those D&D servers may have play by post games (text-based games) and other types of D&D games that don't require actually sitting and playing all at the same time. Also noted that timezone doesn't really matter with online games - it's more about "is that a timeframe I'm available and can play?" then "I'm not in that timezone".
I mean most of the, looking for players
Are always 2am or 11pm somewhere like that in my time
im brand new and haven't played before and I've only seen some YouTube stories about certain campains if someone would play with me that would be great
im also running into DND beyond loading slow and apparently this is a problem lots have
are there any dnd campaigns i can join? (im new-ish to dnd but im still gonna call myself a beguinner bc i still always barely know what im doing and i havent played in a while) (the dm in the game i was in before cant do it anymore)
Hello, you may call me Rose.
I'm simply searching for a Dungeons and Dragon campaign that caters to EU timezone for me and my wife. We're both veterns (for DND) and quiet familiar with character design and taking creative interpretation and lore building for personal characters.
Hopefully I can find something here, if you're interested feel free to ping me.

Hey, figure I’d drop this here. I haven’t played D&D and I’m interested in checking it out. A few years back when I thought me and a few friends would try it out, I picked up multiple books, read a bit, picked favorite races and classes, designed a few minis, got a map pad, got DDB designed a few quick characters and now would like to get into a new campaign or one shot to learn and have some fun. Anyone got room in a game? And willing to have a new player?

Hello!
my name's soda
I've played DND before but I wouldn't call myself more than a beginner. My old DM can't do it anymore due to time and will power ;-;
(I'm 14-17 age range) I was looking on discord for campaigns but it's so hard when you're a minor and a beginner. It would be amazing if someone could put me in a beginner friendly campaign. I'm open to anime related universes if I've watched them. I've only ever used Roll20 and it does destroy my computer but it's worth it!
mad ADHD so can't grantee I'll stay on target all the time and will need reminders that I exist.
I'm in school and quite busy with theatre but I can do 5pm+ for wed, fri and sun

Hey it's great to have you. Just a heads up that this channel isn't for recruitment, but you can make a post in #find-a-game 🙂 You can also look through recruitment posts in #looking-for-players. Feel free to ask any questions you have about the game here!
I’m new here, have some experience with Barbarian and Warlock but still am relatively new. Problem is I’m in the 14-17 age range so I can’t be of much if any assistance to any sessions that are 18+
You need a game?
also in the same boat -_-
Me being a minor+little to no experience makes it really hard for me to find a game
is it best to watch critical role campaigns in order like say i wanted to start with campaign 4 first or would it be better to start from the first one and work my way up?
(im not dnd just curious about critical role)
You can jump in with whatever campaign you like, I think. Folks had some thoughts about this very topic a few months back: #dnd-media message
Hey, brand new, what's the best way to jump in? Don't want to bother anyone who are looking for seasoned veterans with a meek post asking if there's room for me. Any advice?

There is no single best way. It really depends what works for you. Here are some options:
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.)
- Or play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the Free Rules.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
As for bothering people, be honest that you’re new. If they’re willing to take you on, dive in! If not, there are plenty of other games out there!
Thanks a ton ^^ Looking forward to it!
I'm a little new, is it possible to be a Gnarp Gnarp type Sorcerer? (He/She is a alien cat )

up to you, depends on how much RP you want to be a ble to do, sometimes parties coordinate, but it is not a requirement
Ok
Hello
Can someone help me figure out a group
What do yall think are the 2 easiest to understand characters
Classes not characters
Fighter is traditionally considered the easiest. Spellcasters are considered harder, but if you start from a low level, where choices and complexity are introduced slowly, you can pick them all up fairly easy.
To give a second one, Barbarian 😎
They're all easy tbh as long as you start at level 1 and you build up, no class is rocket science.
I want to play in a game but idk how to get myself involved
me too
hello i'm a new wizzard i'd like to start my first campain

Take a look at the posts just above, there are links to the Free Rules and some helpful videos.
Thxs
Hello! Have a look at the link card that has been posted above. These should help you depending on what you need.
If you are completely new, I suggest the Introductory Videos.
I am entirely new, so I’m gonna go do that
I am just wondering. Is there a difference between d&d and d&d beyond?
And is it a big difference?
D&D is the actual game
D&D Beyond is a website where you can view the rules and some content for that game, and build characters
https://youtu.be/BgvHNlgmKro?si=17SHT71InlKyBVtd is this video good?
It’s a decent cursory summary but it’s not a replacement for learning the actual rules
It’ll also differ from the Free Rules since the video was made before 2024
So you get to create your own character in the game? Is it possible to make a ogre?
No, ogres are really big and player characters are usually species that are about human size or smaller. Think orc or goliath as the largest playable species.
I guess you could say you're a really small ogre, while using the species features of a goliath.
Damn, I won’t be able to make Shrek a bad ass character
Shrek is still approximately human sized, so don't give up on your dreams. An ogre in dnd also looks quite a bit different than in shrek.
So what’s the goal of dungeons and dragons?
It’s a collaborative storytelling game. The goal is broadly to have fun, but storywise that’s campaign dependent. Your game may have you searching for lost artifacts, trying to stop an evil cult, infiltrate a magical fortress, etc.
And that’s just on a relatively simple level
Absolutely, but that’s something that your table would cover in a Session 0 when you lay out table expectations
Tone and theming should be agreed upon before a game starts. If you literally wanted to transplant Shrek into a game you’d definitely want to seek out a more lighthearted table. Making a Shrek inspired character would likely be acceptable to a wider variety of tables
Is playing dungeons and dragons hard?
It's not the easiest tabletop rpg to get into, but once you learn the basics, it's quite doable.

Which dungeons and dragons should I get?
E5 2024
The current version is 5e, yeah.
It is the newest one
So, cantrips and weapons follow different rules. The weapons are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#Weapons
For cantrips, it depends on your class and what you mean.
Are you unsure of how to roll damage?
Ok
What’s up with the dice? Why are there 20 sided dice?
It is for randomness
The higher number it is the more likely it will work
A 1 means a guarantee failure
And a 20 is a guarantee success
And the number in between is somewhere between (depends on the dm)
@lyric fjord
1’s and 20’s are only guaranteed fails/successes on attack rolls
Can someone help me with my spell slots
You may be confusing that rule with how BG3 does their skill checks
It is on the 2nd page
The d20 is the basis for the d20 test, which is one of the backbone mechanic in 5e. It’s a way to provide some element of randomness/luck/skill into the game when interacting with the world. See this section of the Free Rules for more info:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#D20Tests
It takes up like 75% of it
What about it do you need help with?
Your available spell slots at each level will be determined by your class table
Well, your spell slots are determined by your class and your level. So let's start there.
I’m a tabiaxi rogue
And a swashbuckler subclass
You won’t have spell slots then, unless you went into arcane trickster
Ok
2 more things
What do I put in feats
Actually my mom is calling me
I gtg, bye
Sorry
You must have a feature that gives you a feat in order to add one. Otherwise leave it blank
For example, your background will give you a feat
I’m a criminal
Then you’d add the feat given by the criminal background. Don’t remember which one it is off the top of my head but it will be listed in its description
How do I do dnd

hello
Did you find out??
Check #learn-to-play and read through the free basic rules.
Do some reading, feel free to ask specific questions as you run into things
But unfortunately we don't have time/bandwidth to teach folks D&D one on one
Hey does anyone know how I would be able to find Play by Post Games? Is it just something specified in the posts
You would look for "Play by post" or "text-only" or "PBP" terms in the game posts
Alright thanks ^.^
Ah yes. The game that's all about roleplaying and you choosing how you adventure all pivots on chance.
Criticism?
Are you a D&D player because you like D&D or does D&D like you because you are a D&D player?
It's often specified in posts here.
Otherwise, just search "PBP" or "play by post" as keywords using Discord's Explore function!
Heyy does anyone have a good dnd podcast that i can listen to? Like people playing the game so i study the gameplay maybe? Nothing too serious

I just played for the first time today! I surprisingly got quite into the RP and really enjoyed myself! 🙌🏼
New to dnd. Do I create a character before or at the beginning of a game? Have not played yet.
It’s worth creating a character before playing a game to understand the process. Don’t count on using that character as is, though—the DM may have restrictions in place. So you may need to tweak, or you may need a completely different character!
Step 1: Find a group of people to play with
Step 2: Make a character
Step 3: Play the game
Step 1 and Step 2 can be switched sometimes, for the reasons iamrazorwing pointed out. But you will always need to have a character ready before you actually sit down at the table to start playing
Uhm hi I’m pretty new to dnd and wanna play+need help
Your DM chooses what level you start at. So that will depend on what group you are playing with. For new players, I highly recommend you join a group that is going to start at level 1, but groups with a lot of veteran players often like to start at level 3 or 5 or sometimes even higher

What exactly do you add when you do skill checks? The number you rolled + the number beside the skill? Or the number you rolled + the number beside the skill + your ability score? (+ Proficiency if you're proficient)
So D20 + modifier. The modifier is a +/- 1 for every 2 points above/below 10 in a skill. So if your strength score was 12, you would have a +1 strength modifier.
The DM will ask you to make a check and they'll tell you what skill to use. "Make a Stealth check" "Make an Animal Handling check". You'll roll your d20 and add the modifier for that particular skill. Skills are normally tied to an ability score... Stealth is Dexterity, Animal Handling is Wisdom. You'll add that modifier to your d20 roll. If you are proficient in a skill, you'll add your ability score modifier AND your proficiency modifier.
hello:)
im new to dnd and discord can someone tell me more about what dndn is
ive only heard of it and watched some youtube shorts on it and thought it was really fun
im not sure how to get started on it though and i dont have any equiptment yet
some new tips or advice to how i can start dnd would be appreciated:)
D&D is a collaborative storytelling game of heroic fantasy. The Dungeon Master controls the world and everyone and everything in it, except the players, who each control their own Player Character.
The core of D&D is this:
- The DM describes the situation.
- Each player describes what they want their character to do.
- If needed, dice are rolled (to determine success/failure).
- The DM describes the results.
Lather, rinse, repeat. To play D&D, you need friends, the rules, dice, character sheets, an adventure, and a way to communicate. The rules, character sheets, dice, and adventures can all be found for free online.
If you want to start your own group, great. But we also have channels here for finding folks to play with. Read #find-a-game for more on those.

hi razorwing 🙂 thanks for the reply, in your experience, is it ok for me to learn as i play? and is there any material i should prepare before i can play, or will the DM guide me in preparing them?
That's going to be highly dependent on the group. If you're going to play with strangers, I recommend learning what you can about the game in the rules and #learn-to-play. In my view, you'll stand a better chance of being accepted into a game if you have some knowledge.
But some DMs will be fine teaching people as they go. The rub is that other people will be competing for these spots, too, so if you can be ahead of the curve, then that's probably going to be in your favor.
Learning how to create a character prior to playing is a good step to take!
oh, i didnt know there was a competition for spots in groups ... thanks for letting me know 🙂 ill try to learn what i can first before looking for a group. Thanks!
Yes, reading through the rules is definitely great. The game is a lot more enjoyable if you're aware (roughly) of how things work, so that you don't see plans fail when certain actions you might want to take violate the rules. You don't need to memorise them - just have the free rules document open alongside you when you're playing.

I have a question I was given this from my uncle was wanting to know if it was worth anything be Chance
It's a special edition monster manual 3.5 core rule book.
A rulebook from 3.5 edition is unfortunately not compatible with the current edition of DnD: 5th edition.
Thank you!!
Thank you very much!
Yeah I am aware of that lol. I just seen them online for 300 to 400 us. So I was curious.
This would be the one I have.
So dude is over charging like crazy I'm guessing?
Whats the main difference?
I see. I'm guessing the newer version is better?
It was more like here u go I don't have any use for this type of thing. Not a uh this is my prized possession lol. I just wasn't sure what to do with it in general but I shall keep it.
That's a great idea!!
We have #dnd-elder-editions too, that would be more than happy to introduce new players to the older editions!
Though its worth mentioning, that aside from the #dnd-elder-editions channel, this server is for discussing 5e only. Channels like #character-discussion and #dnd-rules will only discuss 5e characters and rules, for example

Is dungeons and dragons and nerdy as hell? And will I be ridiculed for liking it?
I’m preparing for my first dnd campaign ever (having played Bg3 with friends before), can someone explain how Hunter’s Mark works for a ranger and why it’s a controversial thing that many say is good at lower levels in the 5e 2024 rules but is weak at higher levels and not good when there’s other concentration spells?
Outsider looking in, yes it’s nerdy as hell. Will you be ridiculed? Maybe? Depends who you hang around with, but if you like it, who cares what they think? You’re doing something that you think is fun and are enjoying. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.
I think the world has come a long way from the times of ridicule for something like dnd
Yeah. I lived through the end of the Satanic Panic. Literally my middle school librarian had to reassure my mother that it was OK for me to get an old red box as a Christmas present.
And that was after having been wanting to play since seeing the cartoon on TV in its original runs.
Yea. There are definitely still things like that in this day and age. Just dnd isn't one of them anymore really.
(I am not exaggerating about the intervention of the librarian, by the way. She and my mother knew each other independently.)
The only sort of ridicule I was thinking of was your standard school bullies being pricks to kids who liked ‘nerdy’ things like chess or reading or getting a quality education or preparing for a nice paying job to support an enjoyable and fulfilling life or other stuff like that 🙂
#character-discussion would be the better channel for that question!
Cheers
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
Lots of people love the game. Do a quick google of Joe Manganiello and his D&D dungeon. Then see if anyone would want to ridicule him. Ridicule Stephen Colbert? Ridicule Deborah Ann Woll?
We certainly aren't going to ridicule you here
yed it's nerdy
and no you won't be ridiculed for playing it
Another question why are these boards so expensive?
Another question on top of that what if I don’t have any friends to play with?
What boards are you referring to?
You definitely don’t need to spend money to play D&D.
Like the board games
I don’t know when I was looking at them. They’re like $60 a box.
Probably depends on what’s in the box. The folks in #merch-and-dice might have a better answer.
K
D&D does have board games which mimic the RPG. They contain a lot of minis and other things and you'll find a lot of board games of similar quality are the same price or more.

Hello
I played DnD once so far. It was fun.
But I am a classic movie fan and I had the idea to base characters in DnD off of characters in old movies.
And by old Im talking 1930s and forward.
I see a lot of shorts about playing characters from popular shows, books, comics, ect.
But I want to play a harp playing bard who dresses like a clown and is functionally mute.
Guess I just needed to get that out.
Might want to run that idea in #character-discussion (note that being mute technically would cause issue for spell casting but discussing things with your DM you may find a way to work with that)
Oh yeah that sounds like where I should go. Ty.
Does the game have to take place in a fantasy world?
D&D is designed around high fantasy but the mechanics could work for other settings - ultimately up to whatever the DM and group decide to do.
That said it may be better to look at a different game system altogether to hit the kind of game vibe you're looking for rather than try and make D&D do the job.
Never played DnD before lol.

Srry, but I'm not reading allat
How do you expect to play a game without reading something about the rules of the game? 😉
(also check the videos linked in the message)
I'd prefer to learn as I play
It's also worth noting that we don't expect people to read everything all at once. You can do things a bit at a time. One section, one concept.. but using the resources is the best way to help you get started
i mean dnd cant be that hard to learn right? Ya roll a dice, you choose an action and wait until its your turn isnt that how it works?
At a high level, you are correct!
also im new too so imma have to learn some of these things as well haha
Quick question: CAN I BE A BIRD
You tell the DM what you want your character to do, the DM tells you what kind of dice roll is needed (if any), and then the DM interprets the roll to decide how effective your character did the thing.
ye be a shapeshifter then
🤔
Here's my pitch: you may prefer to learn as you play, but the DM may prefer players who have put in some effort to learn. So if you want a better chance of being invited, do some of the legwork!
at the start every character must be equal in stats and power right?
There are bird-like species you can play. Or as others have noted you could be a druid and wildshape into a bird.
There are humanoid bird races like owlin and aarakocra.. but turning into a bird requires either a druid at higher levels or magic to temporarily be an actual bird
Nope! The DM will tell you how they want you to generate character stats.

^ That's how you generate the character stats (abilities) which help determine your modifiers.
im confused about isnt the rules rather how do yall gather as a group like is there a video of example for how you guys play?
does everything has to be decided by a dice? like effectiveness of the action?
Also, can you host a DND session in chat rather than voice/camera?
That varies. Some folks get together in person. Some do it using online tools like Discord and other platforms. You can find plenty of streamed games on YouTube or Twitch just to see how things go in action.
And sure, some games are strictly text-based.
Only if the DM decides that a dice roll is needed. A DM may decide you have enough time or training that no dice roll is needed and your character succeeds
wait so i have to find a dm and he will direct me to his personal group and then start the campaign?
That's one route!
or do i have to do something as well
Who's a dm?

You'll find DMs posting in #looking-for-players.
dungeon master, the one who controls the actions or rather direct the game itself
The DM is the “host” and main adjudicator of the game. They control the world the players interact with from the environment to the quests to the NPCs
mean i though this server might have a general or room for vcs but apparently its much more complicated then that haha
Could anyone help me make a character?, Or should I do that on my own..
yeah let your imagination run wild brotha
create something amazing or a joke for all everyone cares
no one will judge, probably
Fish with big muscular human arms.
If you have any specific questions then we’d be happy to help! I suggest making a character as you go through the rules since they’ll answer roughly 95% of newbie questions. You’d also likely find a lot of utility in a digital character creator like ones integrated into D&DBeyond or roll20 to make a lot of the math parts easier
ya trying to be oda's avatar? (one piece author gig)
As for joke characters, they’re generally not recommended for a majority of campaigns. They tend to run their schtick dry fairly quickly, but can work for specific tables, particularly ones intended to be more humorous and short
or watch a tutorial on how character creations links to your desired series or imaginations
Do I need to make a character sheet?
Making characters inspired by your favorites from media is quite a popular option, yes
And yeah if you make a character you’ll need a character sheet
maybe for us new people just stick to the classics like warrior archers mage tank and stuff in classic fantasy like that
can i have an example on how that looks?
I would suggest taking a look at all the classes and seeing what suits your interest the most. Certain classes are more complex than others but it will make the game a lot easier and enjoyable to play if you’re invested in your class
where? or is that decided by the dms?
The official classes can be found in the Free Rules.
oo dang thats a lot of things to fill in
Except for one, the Artificer, which is in a paid book
Go through the rules step by step, they’ll guide you through how to fill in everything
k
It’s ok to take your time, there isn’t a time limit 😅
lemme see
You can share your character sheet here or in #character-discussion
If it's a PDF, use a reputable file sharing service and link to it that way.
You can also use a character creator like the one in D&DBeyond, which is D&D’s official website. As a precaution from feedback I’ve gotten from other newbies:
- Skip the first tab of the character creator. It’s filled with optional toggles that determine what content can appear later in the creator as well as optional rules. Ideally when you find a DM they will tell you what to turn on/off for their game.
- DDB also hosts content made by fans or 3rd Party companies, including custom classes, namely the Blood Hunter and Illrigger. Ignore those for now since custom content is subject to DM approval.
- when you get to the stats section, choose standard array or point buy. You can choose rolling, but know most DMs prefer rolled stats to be done under their supervision as an anti-cheating measure
You can link directly to a DnDBeyond character sheet here if it's been set to be publicly viewable
If you made it with D&DBeyond they’ll have a share link in the top right section of your character page
im lazy so imma use the pre-sets
They're a crim
Seems fine to me!
Chat, crim is short for criminal. I'm just using slang
alr so what now? Do we look for a dm or study the gimmicks for the characters further?

You can do both!
The next step would be to develop a backstory for the character. Different DMs will prefer different lengths of backstory, but it can be done in as little as 3 sentences.
A good backstory will hit 3 key elements:
- Who your character is + personality
- How they got their skills/powers
- Why they’re out adventuring
Oh
Read some rules or watch some videos after you make a post or reply to other's posts. Some folks take time to reply.
Mine was drove insane from little children plucking out his feathers I:
It’s not completely necessary, but it’s helpful to give a character depth
W backstory?
A backstory helps explain where your character comes from in the game world/setting, what they did before they became an adventurer, and then what helped push them into adventuring
Before joining a game, i recommend a few additional things about writing a backstory:
- avoid specifics such as naming kingdoms, regions, magic items, etc. Your DM might not have these locations in their world, or have difficulty integrating them into it.
- Make sure your personality, bonds, flaws, and ideals are contributing to fun at the table. Ask yourself why a party would want to travel with your character, and adjust if necessary. A kleptomaniac rogue that steals w/o consideration of the consequences is a classical example of an incompatible behavior
(Also that isn’t to say you can’t have character flaws, just that they shouldn’t make other players frustrated out of character)
Does the party have to all be on the same page? (All are evil, all are good. Etc)
D&D is designed to be a collaborative game - so it's usually best to play in a way that you're all working together.
They don’t necessarily all have to be on the same page, but the assumption is that they would want to travel and work together even with differences
Being evil in a party of good characters or vice versa can be difficult because of that
I would also avoid any "backstabbing the party" stuff unless everyone playing has discussed it and set expectations and boundaries around it.
Again you're playing a game to have fun, not ruin friendships...
Time to create the average medieval knight who charges into battle with a sword;)
Nevermind. Idk how to create a second character
I'm using the link to make them.
Not the actual app
How does a game of dungeons and dragons end? Like does it end when Dungeonmaster say it’s over? Or is it over when all the characters die?
Good question..
Would anyone do a short practice game with me?
Idk how to play well
I thought the game would continuously go on for days weeks months years decades, centuries eons till the end of time and space
Campaigns can go on for years
There's one D&D game that's been running for close to 50 years now
BRUH WHAT?
I’m pretty sure everybody that was playing the game is already dead
Nah it's still going. Some of the original players kids are now playing in it.
Depends on the DM id say. Ex... our group got trapped due to a botched entangle spell and died in the cave they were trapped in. multiple sessions/campaigns later we found those characters with our new ones but it was a surprise all about the ability of story weaving.
I’m making my first character, do I use XP or milestone? Or does it change with DM?
Okie dokie, I assume I could potentially find campaigns here?
…bard? Maybe?
I’m pretty sure
are they what

Im completely new i just made a dragonborn warlock just cause it sounds cool
Ok so find a campaign and join it and play with people got it
I wanna be a player it sounds fun

Im at school rn but at break
Im tryna find a game i can join so i can play with people at after school hours or something
Using this server there’s #find-a-game for help finding a group
But if you want the best chance at finding a group then you should cast your net wide. Look within other D&D servers, online D&D or TTRPG communities, local Facebook groups, your local library, etc
I found something i think
Its called adventure on
I'm new to dnd and I was wondering if I should buy the starter kit or essential kit
And does anyone know a good way to learn as I can't afford the players hand book or the dm's or monster manual 😅
Im also new and have no idea about anything
The Free Rules get you quite far. They include all of the basics that you need to play dnd, including a small DM section.
I personally can't learn something from a book I would need to be showed
If you want to try it out with a small adventure, check out Peril in Pinebrook
Hmm, there are quite a few youtube videos that give an overview of the game.

Hello
Thanks, I'm kind of panicking as I've been invited to a game by this weekend
bwhahahahaha soon comes the first game then comes the dice addiction
Here's a secret: you only need one set of dice
gets pilloried
🤣
my friend i have like six dice sets heck my wife has dice lol
so do u roll one d8 and multiply or do u roll it individualy for each d8 your supposed to roll? legit question
hello
I suppose you'd multiply for speed in the moment, but I have also done prerolls to prepare for my turn.
okay figured id check cause a few abilitys say roll like 6d8s for damage plus 2d4 if the target is evil and plus 2d6 if target is undead or abjeration
Look, I'm a hypocrite. I may have said you only need one set of dice because that's technically true, but having more definitely helps as soon as the levels go above 3.
lol got it
Hi
Hi
@lyric fjord saw your message in #merch-and-dice message
There are seven types of dice due to different spells/effects/etc requiring different types of damage. Im certain there’s a nerd around here somewhere that knows precisely why but my knowledge stops at “its how this particular TTRPG works”
DnD is a Table Top Role Playing game ( TTRPG) and its kinda the industry standard for a reason- it works. Well balanced overall and people love it (sorry btw if im over-explaining idk your knowledge level so im just explaining the bits I wish people had told me)
Anyway the dice. Its very helpful as a DM to be able to vary the amount if damage a creature can do. For example i wouldn’t want a level one party to potentially take 20 damage all at once. If i only had a D20 to roll for damage that would be bad. The long story short is they balance game play and all that jazz. You can look at other TTRPGs as well to see the variance (but DnD supremacy~)
New to dnd and think I might be ready to play after much research. Haven’t figured out how to get into an online game yet .
I havent really researched i just started today
I haven’t used discord that much which may be why I’m not figuring out how to get into a game
Oh ok
Try #find-a-game channel
I been using discord every day for years now
Thanks. I have looked at it a little. I guess I need to stay on that channel
Ye you need to click the button of searching for dm if you wanna be dm and searching for players if you wanna be a player and searching for a community for a community

can anyone help me and my friend to play dnd cuz like we have literally 0 knowledge of the game

But if you’ve got any specific questions, fire away!
yes, can 2 players play the game?
or do we need to find more humans
we need more right
ig idk
can we use ai
yes can ai be the dungeon master
chatgpt as dungeon master
I wouldn't recommend it, though it might technically be possible
Most folks here would highly recommend you don't use AI for DnD.
That being said, DnD is a game traditionally played with around 5 people: one being the dungeon master, and three to five being the players.
Is it possible for just two people to play? Sure, but it's not easy to make work, so it isn't usually recommended for new players.
so what do we do? we r just two players and DESPERATE.LY want to play
Find a group
where
they all busy with exam
are yall available?
real
i alr passed mine
I would recommend first taking time to learn the rules. DnD isn't usually a game where you can just hop in and play - it tends to take days or even weeks is preparation to get started.
how many rules is it and can i speed run it '
It's not really something quantifiable right at this moment but there's the basic rules that I'd recommend you to study
you can play with two people but the game really isnt made for it.
Hi
I do not think you can speedrun dnd
i meant like the rules
watch me
Ok
jkjk
Lol
you dont need to read all the free rules but the first chapters should be read, to get an idea how the game works

THERE IS A BOOK?.
Several, actually
table top role playing games are often rather complex things, trying to account for a lot of different situations and character fantasies
I still knew so this might be a bit of a silly question but can you okay as a goblin in the game? Because I tried making a character sheet on dnd beyond and roll20 and neither of them have a goblin option
ohhh okayy
Goblin is an option, yes, but it's not a free option.
You can but they're in a seperate chapter from the free basic rules
So you don't have access to them at this time
It's part of a supplement that you'd need to purchase before you had access to it.
Incoming rant: I think my biggest gripes with modern D&D is that there are so many spots left purposefully vague and all of these "just ask your DM" comments and then when I ask the DM, they don't know or haven't decided or just straight up ignore me. I feel like video games have a certainty about answers, because otherwise the game doesn't work, and D&D lacks that consistency.
I play at 3 (a few weeks ago 4) tables at the moment, after not playing since the mid-1990's, and each table does things pretty differently
For example, one table I sit at has rewards per game in the thousands of gold pieces; another table I sit at has me at a total of 140gp total after playing for close to a full year now. Both campaigns have characters of roughly the same level (the first campaign, we're 8th level, the second campaign I referenced, we're all 7th level). Because there is so little cash in the second campaign, I can't afford to even cast some basic spells, for example Revivify, so there has been multiple deaths at the table with no way of bringing people back.
I apologize, but this channel is for new players to ask questions about how the game works. Perhaps this is better suited to #dnd-discussion ?
ok that's fair, my apologies, had to rant because I still consider myself a fairly new player
This site has some helpful tips for two-player games:
https://dndduet.com/
In the Essentials Kit box (or, if you prefer to buy things digitally, in the Dragon of Icespire Peak adventure), there are rules for a GM, one "full" PC, and one "sidekick" character, who's a sort of partial character. Not a full PC stat block, but enough to take the burden of action economny off.
Should I buy the starter kit or the essential kit as I am completely new
personally when i first played i used dragons of stormwreck isle
No tag new found.
I was thinking that but everyone online says to get the essential kit instead as it has more rules and more stuff
oh possibly

i mean its a good idea. plenty to wrap your head around so essential kit is probably good way to go
For some reason it says its cheaper than the starter kit but has more stuff 😂

Real
its good. i do own both. i used stormwreck isle to introduce myself to DM and my friends to playing
now we are currently running tyranny of dragons
Cool I wish I had friends who like it they just call me nerds
mine did to
until i forced them to sit down with me and try it. now every week they badger me to run a session lmao
OK... so at first, there's no need to buy anything. You can play with just the free basic rules (linked in the bot post above).
In addition, ....

True but what about dice
Plenty of digital dice options available.
I know there are online but it's not the same
@exotic remnant just gimme my money
Plus wouldn't it get annoying if you had to keep switching tabs to play online between your character dice game notes to mutch
You could have the "dice tray" on your phone or a different screen.
Not disagreeing with that, because the tactile part is one of the things I really like. So, given all that, Amazon has had a bundle which has included both the Starter Set and the Essentials Kit for roughly the price of one of them. The current Starter adventure (Dragons of Stormwreck Isle) has better structure and advice for a new GM, but is only likely to last you 3-4 sessions. the adventure in the Essentials Kit is more of a sandbox, and the GM advice (in my opinion) isn't as clear for rookies. But, it includes (optional) rules for a sidekick character to accompany a party of 1-2 PCs, and some handouts that could be useful. Each box has 4 pregeneraged PCs, a slimmed-down rulebook, a set of dice, and a poster map.
Somebody linked the bundle last week.
True but physical stuff is better
Sure. But that wasn't the point. The point was that you don't "need" it.
I made a post for any newcomers 😁
Where
hello everyone
hi
hi
Hi. Is there a DM that would be open to helping me (newbie DM) with some magic items. I just need some pointers i feel
You probably want #dm-discussion or possibly #homebrew!
What's the difference between the rogue's Sneak Attack and an attack while being hidden
The rogue gets extra damage for sneak attack and has several ways to trigger it
An attack while hidden will often qualify for sneak attack, but it doesn't get extra damage automatically
I see. So basically anyone can do a sneak attack but only rogue's get extra damage when they sneak attack?
I would recommend not using the term for anyone except rogues since you'll cause confusion
But essentially yes
Oh alright
Thankss!

crazy
The rule books is often helpful but if you wanna learn by playing looking for new player/learn how to games.
I may see if o get more interest here with the sunless citidel
Do not feel you need to know the entirety of the free rules to start out. Chapter 1 (the bare-bones basics of how to play) and chapter 2 (about how to make a character) are usually enough to get you started.
i made a character(complex but its entertaining) and im trying to find a game, ill try to read the basics but im better at catching on stuff on the go
Played my first game earlier, wasn't that hard
Then again my DM knows what he's doing
then im good
i have yet to find one
More than likely. What class you going for?
I went with a grab build (pfp inspired) barb
fighter(i have a monkey brain)
Nice
i like roleplaying so i jst went with traits of a fighter and a little wisdom since i like saying wise stuff
What are limits to character creation? Can I make a character that doesn’t have any special class or race and make them really fast lore wise?
No you have to make a character using the rules
No gms will normally point you towards the phb for races and any other supumente they have besides dex is only good if you have slnthing to add it for your armor class you can have a 20 dex and still get smacked
So do you make up your own adventure or do you have to read one from a script?
You can do either, or both if you find a way to smush 'em together!
Every gm is different. Some make thier own worlds and people like me use a module form word
Wotc
Can I make my own race?
In theory, but whether the DM allows it is another story.
Homebrew? Depends on the dm. 99% of the time you’ll flat out be told no you can’t play as the flash
If you haven't played the game, you should probably steer away from homemade content. If you don't understand the engine, trying to mod it will likely not end well.
The rules tell you the options available. Going outside that is really dependent on the DM.
You can re-flavor features and abilities, of course, but you can't change mechanics that way.

- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
Depends are you running a game or looking for recommendations for a game to run?
Anyone wanna play
Honestly my picks for first time gms would be
-Sunless citidel from tales from the yawning portal.
-lost mines of phandelver
dont wanna be dm just wanna play
I am thinking about dming a game but i have never been one
same

Try running sunless then as it lays allot out for you
Please refer to the lfg/lfdm threads this isn’t a place for that
My tips is
-relax
-make sure things don’t fly to far off the cliff
-don’t attempt kill your players for shits and giggles
-have fun make funny voices
Also the starter adventures are good starting points. I think frozen socks is free on roll-20 and you have what you need to start it. So long you have a the monster Manuel and the dmg. And know the game enough just go for it.
While not far myself and still new to gming my current game has been a huge learning experience for me.
Then again I was dumb enough to start curse of Strahd as my first xD
Please note it is against server rules and is off-topic to solicit/organize games outside of our Looking for Game channels - see #find-a-game to learn how to use those channels.
Hi, tonight my friends and I are going to play the Lego DND set, it would be everyone's first time playing and I'll be the DM, and we want to play using the rules. Does anyone have the stats of the enemies and items that appear in the set?
You can find that here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/claim/dice/lego
I have the pdf but it lacks information and stads of objects, weapons, enemies, etc, And I guess I could look it up one by one in the books but I wanted to know if anyone had the information to save me the trouble.
The rest can all be found here in the Basic Rules, I believe:

Hi
Hello guys
What's up
Wsg !
I was just guessing how to use my inventory stuff. I took 2 things as my weapons a sickle and a revolver for my character.
I cannot use them in my inventory why is that so?
Are you using DnDBeyond? Make sure to cick the square to fill it in to set the item as equipped.
Yes
Wdym?
Are you using the website or mobile application?
are there any apps that let you play DnD without having to physically located together?
?tag new online
Oh thank you. Got it. Yes i didn’t selected the items in my backpack.
Thank you
Thanks
I was thinking abt it too!
More to that is there anything where u don’t need people to play with you?
I hate waiting for people
Yes. DnDBeyond can provide digital character sheets and Avrae, a Discord bot, can connect your sheets so that when you roll on DnDBeyond it displays the results into a chat channel inside Discord (Avrae can do more than that but for many folks, all they need is a shared dice rolling space).
Also many groups use what's called a Virtual Tabletop that provides a space to show maps and tokens and shared dice/chat area.
An example of a Virtual Tabletop is something like Roll20 or Owlbear.rodeo, or Foundry VTT.
Then look at folks looking for players ( #looking-for-players) or other D&D servers ( #looking-for-community ) as they may have a game/group just needing one more player... 😉
I would like some advice on playing paladin better so I don’t get downed as much. I mainly use my slots for smite. Barely using it unless I’m using find steed
Folks in #character-discussion may have some suggestions. But I'd also look at the Shield of Faith spell, improving your armor class, and upping your constitution (increases Hit Points)
Hey everyone, just got into DnD after playing baldurs gate and I have to ask, is it similar to the real experience of DnD or is it a way more simplified version?
It's a computer video game version inspired by D&D 5th Edition
D&d is way different from a video game

youll find a game eventally Besure your looking on roll-20 as well or start playing (though 99% of game son there are paid.)
One problem its harder to use roll-20 on mobile
Yeah....You cant use roll-20 on moble you need a pc to at lest mak a sheet and move a token :/
I don't know if the ipad works because i haven't tried it
It might work I havent tired using my tablit because I want to try inperson games with vtt
But you can use your sheet roll 20 does have a moble app for that
Uhh yeah but the app is unavailable to my cellphone
I think it's not an app
No it is i literally check it
Fr? I've only seen it on browser form
Can i post pictures here?
Because i can't put it here
Nah only in certain channels and I don't know where
I found a roll20 app, but it seems to only be for the character sheets, not the whole vtt
But if you're talking about the roll 20 character sheets app yeah, I know this one
Just what I was about to say lol
I think a friend used it in one of my games actually. They could roll stuff with it, but could only move their token and see the map on their laptop
Yeah that's the only thing i found aside from dnd beyond
Imgur?
Does anyone know of groups in north east Alabama? I am looking for a in person group.
yeah
Thanks
