No idea actually
You use voice/video chat and virtual table top sites
theres a whole side part of the industry built around online DND
How does the dice mechanic work?
really?
There are digital dice apps in every app store and D&D beyond has a dice roller built into its digital character sheet
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
Yes. If you look up actual play D&D youtube channels, a lot of them are people streaming online games.
I've read up on that, but I'm of a visual learner in a sense. But I think i get the general gist.
can you suggest some people to watch?
Also how long do like these dnd sessions last? as in like story wise
Look for Bardic Quest on Youtube
Depends. Sessions can last from 2 to 4 hours.
so the game is over after 2 to 4 hours?
No. Sessions are strung together into adventures, and adventures into campaigns. Campaigns can last years
That guy posted that 3 years ago, is this series still going?
do the adventures/campaigns have to go on for years?
No. Its all up to the story the DM and the players wanna tell, how often they play
What do i have to worry about when i'm just a player?
A game can last for years if the players and dm agree
Last episode was on march 5 it looks like
damn
sorry guys where do i go for help with finding stuff online website
What do you mean big?
Your characters story. You create your character, their backstory, their wants desires and ambitions. The DM creates a world and the story, but you decide how your character reacts to it and you can change the world
im fat lol
No bigk what do you mean finding stuff online website
oh sorry i bought the new player hand book on digital i dont know where to find it tho since i already bought it
"paid-looking-for-game has games that require payment to join. In return, these games might offer a more professional DM experience or more consistent participation."
you can pay for entry, this sounds ridiculous.
Check your emails, otherwise the site you bought it on
Its not for everyone and you should def be careful with it. I would recommend browsing #looking-for-players for games that want new players
Yeah some people are willing to do that because it can be hard to find a group, but its not necessary AT ALL
For me it’s hard since I need the uk timezone which can be a bit dumb, Americans have it easier for finding groups
I'm not sure, what to really look for in looking for players
Your own timezone and what ever kinda game you wanna try
That is all I can say really
People post there about the games they are running and they need players. They list information about the game such as when its played, what websites or tools are used and all that. If you see one you think will fit, reply to it that you are interested.
I'll have a gander
I don’t see a lot of uk ones
Yeah i'm not sure what percentage of people are where, but im sure one will come up if you keep looking. Or consider, if you are brave, being the DM and starting your own.
I’m a bit scared of being a dm, since I have stage fright
I'm not seeing alot of uk either
Totally get that. It took me a while to get brave enough.
Gotta start somewhere
Just keep at it. You can also go on sites like Roll20.net and look for games there.
There's another site called StartPlaying but they are mostly paid games. \
I saw that and it looked overwhelming
Just like anything, if you take your time and try explore you'll get the hang of it.
Will do thank you
Sure can do xD
call pm?
I can’t really since my son is asleep and my partner has the pc xD
You can also post in #looking-for-dm but im less familiar with how that works.
damn
Toad how many uk ones have you seen
well not one yet
I found one he’s called wizard
In looking for players
Yeah i see him
He has 5 slots available
4 people already asked.
Please keep any game organization to the LFG channels or private messages - thanks!
ah mb
Oh sorry
We need to keep this channel on topic which is to help new folks get started with the core game rules/mechanics.
Right, so sorry about that
Do take a look through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for possible games/servers to join to play D&D
And we have #find-a-game to provide helpful tips and explains how our Looking For Game channels work.
I'm new to d&d does anyone have open slots for d&d beyond
Same here anyone looking for other party membera

- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
It's against server rules to request campaign access to DDB in order to view content, just FYI
But you can find games in need of players in #looking-for-players
Is curse of strahd enjoyable for the players for a first campaign? I’ve seen some stuff that it can be tough on new dms and players so I’m just wondering if me and my friends should just run Lost mine of Phandelver instead. This is a most of ours first campaign by the way
I would not recommend it as a new to D&D adventure for folks
I'd suggest Dragons of Stormwreck Isles or Lost Mines of Phandelvar for first-time DMs & players.
As a player, maybe if the DM is experienced and knows how to run for beginners, but yeah definitely wouldn't recommend it as the first campaign
It's got a lot fo details to keep track of, can get confusing, and as you say, is kinda tough (I mean things can be adjusted but still)
Got it. Thank you
Yeah, as much as I love CoS, it's probably not the best newbie campaign
Hey everyone, would you say this product is a good buy for a first time player to hopefully learn the game?

Hello there
It’s a very good place to start! I’d also supplement it with the 2024 Free Rules, found in this channel’s pins & #learn-to-play
Check #find-a-game !
there's a game that's being hosted in a few weeks at a local store. Does this description mean that I can jump in and join, or is for expert players only?
A Dragon’s Breath (CCC-GSP01-01) is a Tier 1 adventure (character levels 1-4), and can be very roleplay or combat heavy, depending on the party.
That means it's most likely an AL game, so you'll want to double check with them to confirm. But tier 1 is levels 1-4 so it should be fine for new players (you'd start at level 1 if you don't have an AL legal characters already)
That sounds like Adventurers League. You may want to check with folks in #adventurers-league
what's adventurer's league? And yes, this is an AL game
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.
[Find out more](#al-rules-compendium message)
Are you interested in the Adventurers League?
We have several channels to discuss Adventurers League play:
• #al-admin-questions — Ask the AL Admins questions
• #adventurers-league — Chat about AL games, events, how to get started, AL characters, or other general AL chatter.
• #1050206875079155742 — Adventurers League rules discussion and questions. General D&D rules discussion belongs in #dnd-rules
• #al-dm-discussion — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for AL Dungeon Masters of all levels of experience to discuss their games, share tips, or share constructive feedback.
• #al-dungeoncraft — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for fledgling or experienced AL authors to discuss the Dungeoncraft program, ask questions, offer tips, or share constructive feedback.
I believe AL has seasons where they play adventures set in a specific setting
what makes it ongoing?
Again the #adventurers-league would have more info
hey guys! quick question, WHY do the levels not even correlate to the actual "spells" or whatever, when leveling up earlier i thought i could get 3rd level spells for being level 3, and found out i had to be level 5 to get 3rd level spells!
What does your classes primary abilities mean? Is it just what your class is mostly based around so those abilities should have your biggest numbers?
Yeah thats a little strange. Class/Character levels and spell levels are really two different things.
i just dont get it man 😔
It’s an intentional game choice for the most part since spells scale fairly significantly in power each level
I’m so confused about the primary ability meaning
Yeah it’s the stat you want highest for the most part
it seems way harder than it probably is
Okay I thought so
I mean, thats what RPGs, tabletop or video games alike, do. You gain levels in a certain class as you get more powerful. Now the spell levels are just ways of thinking about how powerful a spell is and how much energy is required for you to cast it
Each spellcasting class description will tell you when you can cast spells of certain levels.
Its just a matter of referencing the class abilities for your chosen class. If you cant cast fly yet, not the end of the world. Just keep playing, level up and get it when you can.
i learned the hard way its not even to make myself fly
invisibilty too
why would i want to make a creature invisible
Your character is a creature too. Every living thing in dnd is a creature.
Both fly and invisibility can target yourself
gasp
You can absolutely make yourself fly and invisible
i didnt know that
keep in mind both spells require concentration, someone else would need to cast one of the spells on you
Its a good idea to read the rules. They will explain some of these basics for you and you can get the basic rules for free
Is there monsters in the game that can stop you from casting spells?
Yes in a couple different ways.
Oof
There are some who can counterspell, others that create antimagic areas, or areas of silence that make spells that require a spoken component not able to be cast
Besides spellcasters, I'm having a hard time actually thinking of any creatures that straight up prevent spellcasting. I know the Tarasque and Molkoth have ways to deflect spells, but straight up preventing spells being cast is quite rareI think
Beholders
ah of course, classic
But yeah it is rare
Hey, how can I add one of my characters to a campaign as a DMPC?
Might be more of a #dm-discussion topic, but in general depending on what you're wanting to do or what you think they are, DMPCs tend to be frowned upon
Hello, just getting into online RP. I have D&D beyond and roll 20. just trying to find a game to get back into RP
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

Hello. I'm new to dnd. I was playing before when I was a teenage but my dm stopped playing while he was teaching me. Looking to learn and join the games!
What does ‘special’ mean for a lance?
The Special property is, well, special. It has its own specific rule, which you can read on in its specific entry.
for the Lance:
You have disadvantage when you use a lance to attack a target within 5 feet of you. Also, a lance requires two hands to wield when you aren't mounted.
This is only present in the 2014 version of the rules, 2024 simply doesn't have the penalty, and it just lists its two handed property with (unless mounted).
Hey guys would you recommend battle master or Eldritch knight ??
Depends on if you want magic fighty-ness or super tactical fighty-ness
Just a matter of what you're looking for. Both are fun.
Honestly yes, looking for which I think is the best fun !!
The problem that I've found is always the "what the DM thinks is fun" vs "what the players think is fun". It's an open dialogue between the players and DM before the campaign even starts. "Do you want something challenging? Something narrative? An open adventure?" etc. Then that will help you to figure out the specific encounters both in battle and roleplay-wise. And even after that discussion, the players (Such as myself until recently) will throw it all out the window and replace reality with their own 🤪
I think the biggest difference between the two will be the biggest question for you to decide. Do you want spellcasting?
I’m honestly willing to try both, I’ve tried a Druid class and had a blast
So I’m trying whatever interest me so I could learn more!!
So my limited research into these 2 classes supports what @wheat crystal posed. Battle Master favors a "Fighter+" type of role, where the character conducts mundane/normal actions throughout combat in order to achieve victory. Whereas the Eldritch Knight is more of a "Battle Mage" type of character, taking a wide swing of a broadsword in order to mask/hide a careful cast of Mage Hand to trip their opponent and cause a mistake. If I had to provide a unilateral divide, it would be a "Low-" vs "High-" Fantasy setting. Think Warrior vs Death Knight in World of Warcraft
Okay thank you guys for the insight, I feel like I’m leaning towards battle master !!
I’m completely new to dnd and have no clue on what to do

We actually don’t host games here but read #find-a-game and take a look at #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for possible games you can join
This is super helpful I was really lost! Thank you lol
Is anyone hosting a pbp I could join? No v-c

I looked. Was hoping someone could tell me here? I’m new and been wanting to learn for a long time
Hello 👋 iam new to dnd I think I know the basics but I want to review it with someone and dive into adventure together
Hello I played one round of d&d
If you can’t find any games that fit what you are looking for in the #looking-for channels, then try casting a wider net. Try other discord servers, or other websites. The internet is a big place, and this is just one little corner of it

Welcome! I know you said you know that basics, but you might still find something useful in the bot post above. Unfortunately we don’t have the resources to do 1-on-1 lessons here, but we’re more than happy to answer any and every question you might have. Feel free to ask them here
Cool so umm where can I start I mean is there any place where I can find some group level 1 to join ?
where can i find the 2024 rules? can you link it on amazon or something
So, its important to remember that D&D is not a video game. You can't just click a button and join a queue to get put into a game. Players and DMs have to organize their own games, which means reaching out to people and asking if you can join them or if they would want to join you. In this server, we have the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-dm channels, where you can either advertise yourself so that other people reach out to you, or you can browse through the posts that are there and reach out to someone who you think would be a good fit for you. These channels are operated by the server bot, so you won't be able to make your own post there. You can go to #find-a-game for instructions on how to use bot commands to make a post. But as I meantioned to another user a few messages up, you'll be much more likely to find a game if you cast a wider net. Try browsing other discord servers as well, or other websites like facebook, reddit, etc
One of the other users in this discord wrote this excellent guide for finding a game online:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view?pli=1
you can
just go on vtt
In the bot post just above your message, under Quick Links, the first one is the Free Rules
tyx!
VTT is not a website. Its a type of tool. There are dozens of different VTTs out there
Foundry VTT is a VTT named Foundry
that has a website
sure. Most VTTs are websites. But saying "just go on VTT" is like saying "just read Book"
VTT is a type of web tool. Foundry is one of them, but there are dozens
im not sure where to find the thing that person was talking of
what did they mean by supplement it? i have so many questions
do i buy that with it? or only buy the rulebook
Not to mention just opening up a VTT doesn't allow you to immediately play DnD. You still need to find enough people, get everything scheduled and prepared, and have the dungeon master prepare the campaign
So ? You can immediately play there?
The Free Rules don't require any further purchasing. A supplement is a book that adds additional options to the base rules in the Free Rules.
ohhh
thats what i did
ah okay
That is demoing their tool, not the game itself. Foundry is a tool for combat maps. Combat maps are an optional visual aid that makes running the game easier, but its not "the game" itself
Wow they allow newcomers?
so buy the that book with the essentials kit ?
i mean i guess so
do i give my Adress to people and ask them to play at my house? or should i do it in a more descrete location?
The thing you need the most to play with is other people. Find games looking for players in the #looking-for-players channel.
That's up to you! If you feel like you need more content than the free rules, you can certainly opt to buy some books.
oh ok
but that essentials kit isnt free?
I would personally not invite strangers into my house, and I would recommend you do the same.
Look for local game cafes, hobby stores and game clubs.
or maybe it gives you a free book or something idk
Don't share your address online or with strangers
im trying too hard to understand this
The free rules are free. The essentials kit is not free
is the free rules the entire channel of #learn-to-play
#learn-to-play has a link to the free rules in it
ah okay
oh wow i need to read the whole article?
i shall grab my reading glasses one sec
thanks so much for the link
The Free Rules are linked (as in a few different messages above). The Essentials Kit is one of two "quick start" physical products that are intended to give a group of up to ~5 people everything they need to get started in person - there are pregenerated characters, an abbreviated version of the Free Rules, and an adventure that will generally take the characters from level 1 to ~level 4.
oh
The Essentials Kit and the Starter Set have different adventures, but similar price points of ~$25 USD. At one point in time, the Essentials Kit came with a code to get the Player's Handbook free on DND Beyond, but I don't know whether that's still true anymore.
You don't have to read the whole thing. Certain sections only matter if you will be playing the game a certain way. For example, if you know you will be playing the game as a Player and not as a DM, then you don't need to read the Dungeon Master's section yet
As for what you'd need to know - assuming you're looking to be a player rather than to run games, you'd mostly want to be familiar with the chapters on character creation and combat, plus anything that becomes specific to your particular character.
oh
The most important parts are how to play, how to do combat, and how to make a character
can you host games in like, run down buildings? or make a club inside a garage, like in GTA you can make a clubhouse for games
i assume its more costing
I'm a bit at a loss for this question
i might try the market and look for a library to rent out for a day
Is there a specialty game/hobby store near you, for whatever you consider an accessible value of "near"? The kind of place that does lots of business in Magic: the Gathering, Pokemon, Yu-gi-Oh, and the like?
Some islands are bigger than others. some are easy to reach the mainland; some aren't.
most people think im trolling when i say this lmao
If you're talking Hawaii, I'd bet there are hobby stores in Honolulu, Hilo, or both.
If you're talking Mackinac Island, then a) congratulations, because the place is beautiful, and b) you're probably talking about needing to drive to Sault Ste Marie, Petoskey, or TC.
but nah to be specific im on this island (the name is England)
You can do whatever you want. There's no police going around making sure you play the game the "right" way. If you want to play it in person, then you can organize it with whomever you want and wherever you want. Many people also consider playing online, if its hard to find people to play with in your local area
Hello I am also pretty new here how y’all doing?
Me too eyo
Any of the major cities have one or more hobby shops.
Eyo
nearby it says 21 miles nearest shop 23 miles nearest cafe for gaming
I too live on an island.
oh i forgot to mention i live on a rural farm
Living on an island sounds vibing
i might try to ask my parents to drive me into town
Thus why I said, "whatever value of accessible you consider nearby"
Every land mass is an island, if you think on a large enough scale
well, im off to go and seek a building to host my game
Holy smokes you’re right
That seems like a very odd first step
I think its also possible to play like via Videochat etc with random ppls
isnt that what people do to host a game?
first you need a place to actually play right
Well shouldn’t another step being finding people first?
like omegal?
discord
i guess that might work
But omegle would be cool:DDD
i made my character sheet now i have to wait a few days for my package to arrive
Online play is an option. A microphone opens up the ability to play with people across the globe.
Typically you should start by finding other people to play with. If you're playing in person, then you can organize a location that work for all of you. But if you live in an extremely rural area, it may be easier for you to play online
oh ok:D
that might work
i could ask my family they are all big people
im sure they would love to learn
my character shall be called "Glundorr" after my cat
Could a rouge human work?
its a part of my background buti didnt make my char powerful
he wants to regain khazad dum one day
Any species can work with any class. Human Rogue is a very classic and typical combination. It works just fine
Ahh thank you. I’m trying to make my first character atm and just wanna make sure I’m not being stupid
If you'd like more tailored and specific advice for your character, the #character-discussion channel is a great place to get advice and feedback
gonna get the 2024 books for my birthday and wanna make a one shot; how do i:
- determine what level the game should be played at
- not become a forever dm™️
- If you're using a prewritten adventure (which makes it much easier!) then it'll tell you what level to start at. If not, then I'd advise level 1 for a new DM.
- Talk to your friends about future games, and make it clear that you want to play sometimes!
Nevereverplayed DnD and all of its versions, it's not as popular in my societal circle and even in and around my area nor do I have the resources (and braveness) to buy and initiate something about ttrpg, while I have played like, dunno, two ttrpg I always longed to play dnd and it's versions, mainly the 5th because I don't know ANYTHING about dnd,
Also, I have no friends nor do I touch grass regularly, I'm also never finding one who even plays it currently due to my problems stated before,
So how does one play in online? Can you even join campaigns? Is it even moral to sell a campaign run(I mean, really? Paying to roleplay is sad but if the dm is really good, why not)
I've made a funny dragonborn character but idk if I did it right nor do I have any clue on how to even utilize it's combat potential, movement tiles, magic dmg and etc, I just made it in a spur of the moment wayyyy back then and never touched it again (I don't know how to even play more so find and join campaigns)
So, here's the character that I made purely by typing because Idk.
Idk if I even made it right, I feel like it's criminally and extremely wrong.

👋 Hi New to D & D entirely, i was hopping someone could help me get started, on where to start learning
On this server the #learn-to-play resources are a good starting point
You can find online games other places as well, that's just what we have here
I think I used dnd beyond for that character sheet I made,
Still I don't know if I did the stats right the HD right the inventory right, the racial passives and skills right and etc T"T) idk how to even move
The HP is too high for level one, the rest seems plausible at first glance
I'd recommend checking out the learn to play resources as well
Thank you, should I start by learning how to play dnd beyond? Which do you reccomend first :<?
D&D Beyond is primarily for building characters/accessing content. If you know how things work, you can build a character there or somewhere else
So personally I would focus on the actual game rules first
Yipee, Ive read all the common terms and what you should do within your turn,
Since it mentions that a turn is 6 in game seconds, doesn't that mean we as players have to decide within that time frame?
Each round is 6 seconds of in-game time, but that doesn't mean you have a time limit to choose what your character does
You can take your time strategizing, or asking the DM questions about what your options are
If I want to be a man made experiment gone wrong could I?
D&D has very specific rules for what species you can play as, what classes you can play as, what powers and abilities you can have, etc. So you have to create a character that follows those rules. But that is only for the game mechanics. If you want to change the flavor of something, you can talk to your DM about it, but that’s generally perfectly fine. So for example, if you chose to play as a dwarf, and you have all of the stats, abilities, and game mechanics of a normal dwarf, then you could potentially (with your DM’s permission) say that you aren’t actually a dwarf and are a lab experiment creature instead, so long as that only changes your appearance
Hello
thanks 🙂
Question, I've been reading the spells and Im seeing material requirements which are funny, how does one get them in the roleplay itself? Colorful sand, a hind leg of a grasshopper, I find it funny rummaging about to search for those items
And it doesn't specify if it consumes that item, does that mean it consumes that item/doesn't consume that item?
Yep! If it doesn't say it consumes the item, it doesn't, so as long as you have the item you're bascially all good to cast the spell!
That sais, there's two items that you usually get one with any spellcasting class; Arcane Focus or Component Pouch, and when you have those, it replaces the material cost, so you don't need the funny items (Unless they are ocnsumed by the spell, or if it has a specified cost)
The idea of a component pouch is it has all the common components you would need, so you don't have to search them out separately
Or you can use an arcane focus item like a wand or staff, which removes the need for other components
The one expectation is components with a GP value. So for example the Raise Dead spell requires a diamond that costs 500 GP. You have to buy that separately, it doesn't come with a component pouch and can't be replaced by an arcane focus
The other exception is if the spell consumes the item, can't replace that with Pouch or Focus either
Oh! That's really... Broken
I was thinking the illusionary spells were a bit too material reliant (I was thinking of making an illusiory based character who just wants to light things up because they're scared of the dark so they'll just hide behind illusions n stuff)
If a spell doesn’t consume its materials and doesn’t specify a cost for them, a spellcaster can use a Component Pouch (see chapter 6) instead of providing the materials specified in the spell, or the spellcaster can substitute a Spellcasting Focus if the caster has a feature that allows that substitution.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/spells#SomaticS
In my experience, material components mostly don't matter in game
They could be relevant if a spellcaster needs to be disarmed for some reason, like if you're captured or attending a fancy party with no weapons
I was playing DnD and I saw that one of my items was a pouch of sand and I was wondering If I could use it as a melee weapon? (I have just
Started playing DnD. specifically Monday so I don't know anything)
There aren’t any explicit rules for using it that way, but you can discuss it with your DM.
Oh ok
Closest thing would be Improvised Weapon -rule 😛
Ok
Could always convince your DM to use it as pocket sand for potential blind effect
He told me it was a pillow
I mean we're all kids and my dungeon master is new but he's a nerd so he's probably read the rule book 4 times and we can only play at school so we only get like 1h of play
I made a sorcerer that has funny spells,
I didn't take any damaging spells sadly, well maybe with the sage origin I could
What do they do
I have to now anyways
What are some of the ways my PC may commonly get disadvantage on attack rolls/what are some good options to negate this? I'm playing a rouge so sneak attack is most of my damage and I realized that disadvantage on attack rolls would be absolutely brutal to my damage output
You might have disadvantage if you can’t see your target, or if you’re hit by an effect like the Frostbite spell.
But disadvantage can by removed by finding a way to get advantage as well. The two cancel each other out.
Yeah! I use my vex mastery for this sole purpose (and crit fishing haha)
I genuinely appreciate you linking to the guide, but when you do, could you please mention me by name? Not a big deal if not. I do want people to know it exists! I just want folks to also know its origin, since I didn't put a watermark or anything on it myself.
im trying to create a character and am new to the game... i need help if anyone has time !
i also need help on it but i already made some progress i just want to send to someone good at creating a character to get some reccomends or advices
#character-discussion is where to ask for feedback on characters.
oh thanks for that i didn't know
thank you!
Certainly. My sincerest apologies about that. I had assumed your name would be in the document and tried to keep my message more concise. I’ll be sure to include your name next time
I appreciate that. Thank you, sincerely!
so i want to start this with some randoms in here as idk anyone to do dnd with can anyone help me later today?
and idk much about dnd
so how do you play DnD I have a character but I don't kno whow to play exactly
Try checking out #looking-for-players , Roll20 or LFG on Reddit (to name a few).
In person is one option, but many groups play online, often using microphones for voice chat and a virtual tabletop (VTT) to share dice rolls and images.
what about wanting to play but know nothing of it and dont have a character?
You can find the basic rules for D&D online and you can search youtube for how to play d&d. Lots if helpful info out there.
The basic rules are free btw
Greetings
Yo
rip got kicked out of a group not sure if its cause they just filled up or anything the dm didnt say anything
Hey, I wanted to advertise a game. I wanna run in the Spokane area but every time I post in the looking for a game it gets rid of my posts even when I use/looking for players.
Ello 😄
I’m doing all right.
I'm new I'm currently going through my first campaign and I hit a roadblock where me and my friends brother are having some beef in game and he seems to be hellbent on killing my character what should I do?
Honestly, talk to them outside the game and try to work it out
I really only see them when we're playing in game
Hi! Can someone pls help me? My friend has convinced me to start trying D&D, but he and his sister, who are both D&D veterans, keep losing me when trying to explain it, and their dad, who is a Dungeon Master, also lost me.
so when i do /looking for a dm will i get like a friend request or a direct message or what if my form is approved?
The way they were trying to explain it just honestly confused me a bit. Apparently, D&D is nothing like I thought it was, and I need a simple explanation really. In depth explaining can wait for a little, and once I get basic knowledge, I can ask my friend tomorrow.
Trying to speak dragon born burns my throat—
How do you even pronounce
valeij, vhir, zara and unsinti
What does
Words that modified other words were placed before or after the word they modified, with the most important modifier always placed before. Draconic speakers often placed it a second time directly after the word for additional emphasis mean
When do you apply
like sj, ss, and sv. It also included a sound similar to a creature clearing its throat, ach.
I’d suggest starting here, then:

hiiiii i wanna play with people but ive litterally never played in my life nor do i have people to play with </3333
i was watching lord of the rings and i was like omg isnt there a game kinda like this
Omg us
I’m in a similar boat myself! I have experience with a handful of DND and DND-inspired game sessions, yet don’t have a consistent group of friends to play with myself. God-willing, I would love to find some soon since i’m really invested in this franchise!
Same here! Never done TTRPGs before but am eager to dive into it. I'm currently planning a oneshot steampunk-adjacent campaign
Looks like you folks found yourself a party, find a DM and you're set.
1 DM and 3 players, thats enough to get rolling! Nice.
An aspiring DM is still a DM to me.
Yeah, the minimum is 3!
D&D can be overwhelming and complicated at first, and it might even be the nerdiest thing you'll ever do. We welcome it! You can learn by watching other tables and even a few popular D&D games are found online; some of the moderators in this channel are better equipped to point to the right resources.
Oh, I've watched liveplays before, and I've brushed up on the rules, so I'm not going in completely blind, thankfully 😅
I myself have the main guiding resources for playing digitally. I, too, have been watching more liveplays as of late
Moving forward, you folks may want to take this outside of this channel and direct message each other.
Hey guys just a friendly reminder
to take game organization to #find-a-game or DMs! It’s against server rules to solicit games outside of those channels
Ah, I see! I'm sorry
How does movement and length work :3?
what do you mean 'length'?
If I were to make an assumption, this sounds like a "circles = squares" question
Each character has a walking speed (commonly referred to as just Speed). Typically it’s 30 ft.
On your turn, you can move a distance up to your speed.
So with a 30 ft walking speed, you can move up to 30 ft.
The, the important thing,
How much squares is it actually
Do you have a specific situation that you are having confusion with? An example would help us understand
If you are trying to figure out what squares an effect that targets:
each creature within 30ft
the way that is ruled can differ from table to table. Because diagonal movement is often ruled as being the same distance diagonally or laterally, many people rule the above as a 60ft square. This is very easy to do when playing on a grid.
A more 'realistic' approach would be to actually measure out a 30ft radius circle from the point of origin, but would take more time. The solution you use will come down to if you rather taking more time to get a more realistic result, or not.
Spell, thrown weapons and it's radius! I'm sorry I'm super clueless when it comes to feet (unless it's pictures)
yeah i dont like feet either. all you need to know is that 5-feet = 1 square on a traditional battlemap
so if you have 30ft of movement, you can move 6 squares. If your weapon has a thrown range of 20ft, you can hit a target up to 4 squares away.
Yeah, you just divide by 5.
You can even write the distance in squares on your character sheet, if you use that number more often.
Thank you, that makes things understandable, so, so much
Hullo there!
Hello im relatively new to DnD and I had an idea for a Character and was wondering if someone could help and listen on my idea?
I got a question, if I'm a circle of the Moon Draconic Druid, can I activate guardian of nature then wild shape, move then attack, like in a turn.
If it's not distinctly said in the handbook you can't then I'd imagine the technicalities would be a question for the DM
ok thx
So let me see the abilities your asking about.
Guardian of Nature, Wild Shape and an attack then a movement?
Is Guardian of Nature and or Wild Shape an Action?
both are bonus actions
You can only take one Bonus Action per turn unless otherwise stated.
Unless of course your DM plays different rules in which case this advice is irrelevent.
But rules as Written. Base, one Action, One Bonus action per turn.
oh ok thank u so much for the help
Free actions of course are infinite. And Movement is free unless one of your previous actions, bonus actions or free actions says otherwise.
For a Forge domain Cleric, would the Channel Divinity: Artisan's Blessing, let you turn the metal bars of a prison into something else over the course of an hour?
I would check out #find-a-game for directions in finding a group that fits your preferences.
very much so a rules question
Can DND players create Homebrew weapons?
I had a DND session with an AI engine, and I asked if I could make mace mixed with a magic staff?
It agreed btw
With DM permission maybe
It’s your own campaign as far as I know you can do anything
Yeah well I checked there and no one is in my tomezone
How about here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/looking-for-players-groups
There's also Roll20 and LFG on Reddit, off the top of my head. @harsh fjord has a bigger list of options.
Do try looking at the times you're available rather than just the timezone itself. Someone's morning game might be fine for your evening availability.
This is the guide Mr Smith is referring to: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
It has a bunch of avenues to check out, so hopefully you'll find a game that aligns with your schedule.
Finding a group is intimidating
weee
Put your best foot forward. Try to get a basic idea of the rules, how the dice work, and what's involved in making a character. Be clear and honest about your availability. Look at the advert, and tell the DM why you want to play in their game specifically.
@latent spire Im trying to find a group too tho ive never played DnD at all so was hoping to find one thatll help me learn it lol
im kind of confused on ranger spellcasting. Does the level 1 ranger already know all of the level 1 ranger spells?
like do they have access to every level 1 ranger spell and have to prepare a few every day or do they learn them as they level up?
Assuming you are looking at the 2024 rules, a level 1 ranger prepares however many spells it says you can prepare in the "Prepared Spells" column of the ranger table. Then every time you finish a long rest, you can change out 1 of your prepared spells for a different one
If you are using the 2014 rules, then its quite different, but a 2014 ranger doesn't even have access to spellcasting at level 1, so I assume that's not what you are referring to
didnt know dnd had a 2024 version lol. the top link was the 2014 one and that was the one ive been reading. guess the confusion came from using 2024 ranger guide with a 2014 ranger character
That would make sense. The new ruleset came out in September, so the top results for internet searches and such will probably still be the old rules for a while.
Yeah, hearing about some of the changes for the 2024 rulebook has me interested in playing D&D again after nine years

okay thank you
So something I’ve always been curious about over the years and reading through the 2024 handbook, is there any job that could try and be a dragoon? Wielding a mighty lance and jumping high into the sky only to dive and strike their enemy true with said lance?
-# Had to read that twice because I thought you were asking if there was a dragon class
No, not explicitly. The closest you'll probably get is Ranger, with their Zephyr Strike spell.
Very, very few features for players involve verticality in any shape or form, but there are a number of ways to flavor normal abilities to looking much more spectacular.
Gotcha. Definitely not ideal, but there are other character ideas I’ve had that I could explore first.
Lances are a weapon type in D&D, so you can very easily build a character that specializes in using a lance. But due to the nature of D&D being a turn based game thats typically played on a grid, combat is often pretty static. You could probably flavor your attacks as jumping into the sky and diving down onto the enemy, but there wouldn't be any mechanical benefit from doing so.
Yeah, I was hoping there would be something similar to monk, that is the class that is appealing the most to me right now with what I am reading.
A spear would work fine as something you could call a lance.
Hard to navigate the book on mobile, do spears fall under what could be classified as a monk weapon for their class abilities?
Yes, spears are a monk weapon
Hey been thinking about you about getting in dnd but not sure how to get in a group, thought I’d ask around and get some advice
I’ve been looking at all the races and classes trying to find something unique but I’m assuming any combination of anything has already been done before 😂
For finding a group, #find-a-game is your best shot here. Character ideas, #character-discussion .
Just FYI, "looking" is not a tag command. The command is just ?looking
I knew that at one point and was just blanking.
Juggling a half a thing too many this morning.
Oh so dnd so like an event type game, played a few times a month???
You can play as often or as little as your group wants to play.
But most groups play in 3-4 hour chunks every couple of weeks.
I need to find a few group then 😂
Are you aloud to use to same character in different campaigns??
The simple answer is "not really."
That’s something you’d have to discuss with your groups.
But generally, people create a separate character for each campaign.
Usually the case is that your character exists in the world of a particular game. If you gain experience or items in one game, you probably shouldn't expect to be able to bring that same character with all that stuff to a different game.
So it’s like Spider-Man in the multiverse, if you wanna play Peter Parker every time you gotta go through the canon events in different storylines
If that makes any sense
hi im a freshie to dnd what classes should i take for a support build?
The exception to what people are describing is what are referred to as "Organized Play" campaigns. The main one relevant here is Adventurers' League. (All the channels that start with al- are relevant to that.) AL puts a few restrictions on what/how you build a character and adds some recordkeeping expectations, in exchange for being able to take a character to any table running an AL game.
If you play Bob the orc fighter in one game, and that game ends with you being a hero of the realm, the next time you join a game, you probably won't be able to be Bob the Heroic Orc Fighter. You'll probably end up being Bob, the level 1 orc fighter again.
Okay that makes sense
Cleric, Bard, and Paladin are all great support classes
so if i were to make a healer/buff build cleric and bard?
Sure, either of those would work great.
ohk thank you
Can you mix any class with any race ??
That's correct, any species can be combined with any class
And can be combined with any background, though (assuming 2024 rules) some backgrounds end up better suited to some classes than others. But that also makes some narrative sense since (for example) somebody who went to seminary isn't likely to start picking pockets or assassinating people for a living.
What parts of the player handbook should I 100% need to read, besides the part about classes? I've reached the section about races and idk if I'm able to finish reading the entire book before my session on the 24th
As a player, the most important things to understand are
- how to fill out your character sheet
- how combat works
- how skill checks work
To elaborate on part of Dosh's answer: don't worry about knowing how all the classes/all the species/all the backgrounds work. If you'll be playing, worry just about knowing the things that are on your character sheet right now. (You can learn the higher-level stuff about your character class as it becomes relevant.) If you're going to be running, just worry about the stuff your players have on their character sheets.
How an I supposed to run a pre-made campaign?
That's a broad question, but you can find some useful approaches from the Dungeon Dudes, Eventyr Games, Seth Skorkowsky, Dicebreaker, WASD20, and the DM Lair, plus a bonus.
#dm-discussion would be for the more in-depth conversation on this topic.
Hello I’m new to dnd and I’m very interested in joining a campaign any tips on where to begin
Welcome! The general recomendation for getting into D&D is to give the free basic rules a read. This is done so that when you join a table you aren't completely unawares of what is going on. Giving a go at making your first character is also a healthy thing to do
Sounds good thank you sm!
Feel free to post any questions you have while reading here 🙂
I am running a campaign and I need inspiration
What's the best way to insert beeg and get the player to meet without the classic tavern
For random encounters
Maybe take your question to #dm-discussion where other DMs can provide suggestions?
This channel is more for new to D&D folks to get started with the core game rules and mechanics.
I haven't played in 3 years, would it take a long time to learn the changes in the 2024 edition and would I need the handbook for it?
The 2024 updates are really not that big of a change from the 2014 materials.
I'd start with the free basic rules https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
I believe the SRD (System Reference Document - basically the free rules/materials put together in such a way so third-party publishers/developers can build D&D compatible products) will be updated eventually to cover the 2024 updates as well but that's likely happening in 2025 timeframe.
Ok appreciate it, I was about to start looking for a group until I saw that new rules were released haha
Sorry thank you
Hi guys! I’m still pretty new at dnd but have played a few campaigns. I’m trying to get back into it, but have no idea where I would find a campaign to join, any suggestions?

I've never played d&d before, but I really want to get started. Which vtt is the most populated?
I would worry less about VTTs at this point and focus more on learning the game and finding a group.
What the group uses to play D&D with is what you'll end up using anyway... 😉
How do I get a sharable character link from d&dbeyond?
Assuming on website, not mobile app, go to Manage Character (button near your character's name) and first click Character Settings and make sure the character is set to public (down in the Character Privacy section).
Then copy the URL from browser and share that with folks.
Ah okay. For some reason the link from the mobile app was stuck private when I tried it in my browser. Used the browser version and it seems to work. Thanks.
how closely do i have to follow the descriptions regarding race? Can I have a dwarf that's friendly with elves, or a wholesome drow, etc?
You do not have to follow the stereotypes
what are some classes i should avoid as a beginner? I know fighter, rogue, and barbarian are the "easiest?" while spell focused ones are harder
None that you should actively avoid. If you're interested in a class, you should give it a go without worrying 😎
Spellcasters tend to be more difficult, sure, mainly due to having a lot of options (you choose your spells from a list), which are on a resource system (spell slots), but they aren't in any way impossible to figure out. Spells do exactly what they say they do
Martial classes like Fighter, Rogue, Barbarian are easier since their go-to way of doing damage is basically the same, to attack with your weapon
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
Guys on page 315 of the newest handbook, there’s a blue dragon. What’s it called?
Hello I’m new, please give me tips on what I should do because I don’t know how to play at all lol
What specific section of the Players Handbook? I currently only have DnDBeyond to refer to so there are no page numbers for me to reference
Give #learn-to-play a read and check out the free basic rules to start with.
Feel free to ask any specific questions here as you run into them.
Emphasis on specific - we can't really teach you and the many, many other new D&D players everything about the game one on one.
But we can help answer specific questions as you have them.
Ah very helpful! I located the image. The caption for it states, "Rival mages use Shapechange to transform into a beholder and a behir during a magical duel".
So it's actually not a blue dragon, but a behir (see https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16804-behir to see it's stats).
See the message just above this for more details - the monster is not a blue dragon but a behir.
Is it awful that my starting character is a druid? I think I'm doing ok at filling out their sheet but idk
using the updated players handbook and its pretty neat
High complexity stuff or smth
also W name lol
My first character was a dwarf that used a magic enchanted spoon as a dagger i think you're fine 😂
i love that
thats ok I love learning hehehe
Meanwhile I got a basic ahhhh starter lol
I've played BG3, but not really DnD

when you make a pc you dotnm add both race and background ability score plus right? for exampel human and soilder you only get the oens fro mhuman or soilder but not both right?
No you get the bonuses from your species and your background
ok thx
you get both in 2024?
ah ok thx
What Umee noted!
thx im the dm and my players in their words are slow so im making them for them
yeah they straight up wont read i am making the sheets but they tell me race class and if they got a backstory that if not i makke a simple one for them they decide everything i just am writign it
how crazy should i go with making my first ever character. Stick with basic concepts or can i throw in some more outlandish/complex ideas?
That might be an issue with playing D&D according to the actual game rules... lol
Stay with the core game rules for now. Save the outlandish concepts for when it's the right game/campaign and you have a grasp of the game.
yeah ill make them learn that i did a one shot with one of them and the one of them is very smart and i hope the other will listen and learn
ill try thank you it might be better to just tell them how
a figther (1d10 hitdice) and a plus +2 con should have 12 hp at lvl 1 right?
strange dnd beyond says 14
sure
If you set Hit Point Type to “Manual” before you choose a class, it defaults to 12 + Con.
ah ok thx
You’d need to go to the Class tab in the character builder and hit Manage HP to add the correct starting value (10) instead.
got it thx
is there a specific spellcasting ability a druid would have?
Wisdom
Druids are wisdom based casters so you typically want wisdom to be high
so it would just be my wisdom modifier (+3)?
Anything that asks for your spellcasting mod is the +3 yes
or would it be 19 because my wisdom is base 6 modifier +3
gotcha thanks
what are some classes that would fit a bold, cowboy-like thief? They're not really a rogue since they don't do stealth, but openly steal valuables from their opponents.
Im kinda confused on how to set my characters initiative, They're a wood elf Druid if that matters
Huh, Roll20 doesn't let me do a battlemaster fighter
Thanks!
thanks! i won't create this character for my first campaign, but i was thinking of a character who uses a weapon like Dr. Faust from Devil May Cry. Earns money by fighting (like, the opponents literally spill out their valuables onto the floor upon being hit). That type of ability/magic is limited to the weapon only in the video game, so gunslinger figher is a great fit!
i heard that ranger is kinda an underpowered class. Why is that? I know viability doesn't matter, but that's all i know about the class
from my understanding, it's a combination of some people being unhappy with how the mechanics express the ranger fantasy, and also just memes diluting any actual information about anything
i would say that rangers are far from underpowered. more often than that, some people have discussions about if rangers are boring to play or if their mechanics express their class fantasy effectively
I got some questions about concentrations spells, i think im understanding it wrongly. The description goes
"Damage. If you take damage, you must succeed on a Constitution saving throw to maintain Concentration. The DC equals 10 or half the damage taken (round down), whichever number is higher, up to a maximum DC of 30."
So I have to roll a d20 plus my constitution modifier and if its below 10 or half of the damage taken then i lose concentration is that right?
that is correct
specifically, your con saving throw modifier. if you have proficiency in that, you'd add your proficiency bonus to the check
so if i cast a spell of magic missile they need to roll a saving throw for every missle hit
ah ok
because i have a cleric who is a war domain so im trying to understand why i would be in the frontlines when i have spell buffs that require concentration, its like shouldnt i be better off at a range so i have less chances getting hit?
Howdyyy, ay im new to dnd and I've taken a real liking to the thri kreen race cause they remind me of yautja, im having a little difficulty understanding the secondary arms though, could I wield a shortsword and a shield in my primary hands, and 1 shirtsword in my secondary hands since a shortsword is considered a light weapon, making an attack with my action and then another as a bonus action with my secondary arms?
Does the 2024 ruleset have a basic rules pdf the way the 2014 ruleset did?
I know about that, but I don’t see how I can download it as a pdf to print
Thank you!
any comment on this?
Hi all
ahh ok noted, is there a middle ground where i can be a support cleric to buff teamates but still be in the front lines?
of the 4 subclass im not quite sure where each one places in
im just thinking
life- let others go in then you
light- ?
trickery- stay in the back or sneaky sneaky like rogue
war- front lines with everyone
ahh
Light Domain and War Domain would make for good frontliners. Warding Flare requires you to be within 30ft of a target to use it, and War Cleric's can make weapon attacks with their bonus action, so are rewarded for being nice and close.
ok im understanding this more
Is nature domain good for a cleric?
No such thing as a bad Cleric, your spelllist is so goated you could practically play without a subclass and still keep up with everyone else
Are there such a thing as a bad ranger?
In my experience the new Beastmaster doesn't keep up with the other subclasses. But being able to interact with an encounter in two different locations at the same time can create interesting opportunities in a way whiteboxes can't account for
why is new beastmaster not good?
My experience with the new beastmaster was in a 20th level oneshot, where we all got a handful of magic items. The problem with the beastmaster is that you can have a bunch of magic items to make your character stronger, but your beast companion will rarely benefit from any of them.
This results in your character making one attack (with all the buffs from your MIs) and your beast making two attacks as per their statblock without said magic items.
Compare this to the other ranger subclasses who are making 2 or 3 attacks per Attack, all backed up by their magic items, and you get a rather large difference in DPR
oh... is 2024 Hunter Ranger better than 2014 version?
@glossy zealot Goliaths are a humanoid species of Giant. Certain types of giants are known for their ability to perform spells, but its more of a sidenote to their martial abilities.
Havne't had a chance to play the 2024 version but from what I've read I have to believe its an improvement
Goliath more like gorillas
Hello 😊
Just checking since phb 2024 cleric doesnt say that there is nature domain / tempest domain / knowledge, does it mean its gone? Or is 2024 an addition
They're all legacy subclasses now, which means they aren't up to date with current d&d editions
Ah
That's not quite true, no.
2024 is not a new edition. It's a revised core books and rules.
If a class from 2014 PHB does not appear in 2024, you can use it as is in a 2024 game. If there has been an updated version, you use that.
Essentially- use the most up to date version of a class. This might be the 2014 version.
What does the "legacy" mention mean for these subclasses then? It mentions they may "conflict with the core rules" on beyond.
And why is that the case for some of them to be "legacy" yet others remain without that specific mention
Legacy notes that it is not the most up to date version of something.
For example, the core classes (all 12) got a new version
And the Champion subclass for Fighter got a new version
so we've got a legacy fighter, legacy champion, and new versions of those respectively
but we don't have a new version of, say, the Samurai subclass for fighter.
So the current Samurai subclass for fighter, from Xanathar's Guide, will be the most up-to-date version of said subclass.
In some cases in dndbeyond, this is being applied broadly to an entire class section (So Wizard 2014: Necromancer is marked legacy, because it's under wizard 2014, despite the fact there is no 2024 version of necromancer).
Again though, you can use the 2014 version with the 2024 base. Dndbeyond has other coding and mechanical restraints it needs to consider as well, so keep in mind that just because Dndbeyond might let (or not let) something happen doesn't mean its not allowed 'by the rules'.
Yall know of any good websites or pdfs to download that sort of help you get the gist of DnD without an overwhelming level of confusing info dumps? Or like let you explore at your own pace without constantly having to click between numerous links to various different articles in a complex manner? If that makes sense
Alright, I see. So, in this case, cleric subclasses that were in the 2014 PHB exclusively are not up to date anymore, due to the 2024 PHB having been released.
I think I finally get how that works
But it doesn't mean they can't be used unlike what I thought previously
Or that they're "not recommended"
Because I remember seeing that somewhere but I might've been wrong.
Pretty much although you can use a 2014 subclass with a 2024 PC if that subclass hasn't been updated so you could be 2024 Wizard : 2014 Necromancer.
It def can be a little confusing, especially if you throw coding limitations on top 😅
The 2024 core rulebooks are essentially meant to be revised core books that give a new player all the 'standard/base' things they need to play. Before a new player might need to get the 2014 PHB, and then Tasha's for all the optional rules and extra classes that people typically use, and Mordenkainen's for the updated species options and so on.
The 2024 PHB aimed to include all the classes and subclasses that were felt to be the new 'standard' and base for a new player. This also meant dropping some subclasses and options.
Well, I feel bad for telling my players I'd prefer not using legacy options now.
Im new, help me
Dnd is very hard for me, help me to learn it Please. I have read the players guide. But its very complicated
What a mood lol
Give #learn-to-play a read and check out the free basic rules to start with.
Feel free to ask any specific questions here as you run into them.
Emphasis on specific - we can't really teach you and the many, many other new D&D players everything about the game one on one.
But we can help answer specific questions as you have them.
And don't spam reacts/emojis
Ok thanks 🗡️
I think it's best to avoid mixing and matching. Especially on a single character.
It makes it way easier for you as a DM to know how a given spell/ feature works if everyone at the table is using the same version of it.
It also lets you pre-solve arguments with anyone who tries to choose the best version of everything from every possible source if you very clearly lay it out in session 0 that you'll be referring to a specific rule set.
hello! fairly new to d&d and was told to message here
Welcome!
Well you could always change your mind, but i wouldnt feel too bad. Theres something clean in my opinion about trying 2024 out with just 2024 options
Anything your wondering about?
I think I wanna play as a drunk monk for my first game, it sounds fun and I just got finished making the character on dnd beyond
Is there any way to share a character, like letting someone look at it through the app or is that not possible
As long as you’ve set your character to public (1st tab of the character builder), your DDB sheet should have a share link in the upper right
just how the online works really, i played a few games with my family as a player and i know a decent bit on that part, but the online bit is pretty confusing to me
well looks like someone got your back
Hey there dungeoners. I'm fairly new to dnd and was wondering if there's a group of people that are all on the newer end to play with? Idk if this is where is post this 😂😂

Hello im new to dnd how am i gonna play the game and is it an app or i should buy the board game?
D&D is neither an app nor a board game. It is a tabletop game in its roots (small distinction), and does require interacting with other humans.
How am i gonna play D&D?
To play D&D, you need:
- People and a means of communicating with them
- An adventure to play through (provided by the DM typically)
- The rules
- Character sheets (or at least some way to record what your character can do)
- Dice
There are other things you can use, but those are the basics.

Do you all have dnd beyond?
Many do, some use other resources. The Roll20 website has a character builder built in, for instance.
It also has ways to look for games to join, voice and video chat, and a way to share images so everyone gets to see the "game board".
Without an established group, all Beyond does is serves as a rules codex.
Some established groups can use a beta feature of Beyond as a virtual tabletop.
A good way to get started is to take a look at the Free Rules linked below. Read a bit about how the game works, and maybe put a level one character together. Then you can start looking for a game to join.
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here.
Or #learn-to-play message has some more general advice.
Hi
Welcome!
hello there, I've read the other channels but there are still stuff that I do not understand, can someone help me?
If you've got questions, ask away!
Hey
okay so, I need to create a character for a game and then what? Do I just find a group of people to play and play? Or do I need to make more stuff
There's no one right path to getting started.
But if you don't already have a group lined up, what I'd suggest is coming up with a few loose ideas for character you'd be interested in.
Then when you do find your group, you can work with the DM to find the best fit and add any finishing details.
I have a fantasy story with a bunch of characters, I was thinking I could use those characters and make them fit into the story I am playing
But you can start looking for a group whenever you like. Even having a character isn't generally required upfront.
Often characters are built along with the rest of the party and specifically for that campaign.
okay then, I will try to find a group tomorrow (its pretty late right now so I cant play)
also how exactly do you play it with a group? do you just VC in a group chat or do you need to download an app or something similar? Sorry I am new to this
It depends on the group!
?tag new online
See the article above for some ways folks play D&D online
The one thing every group needs is a way to communicate.
VC is a very common way to fulfill that need.
okay then thanks for helping
I am trying to make a dnd character is best to use dnd beyond right
Depends on what your dm asks and how familiar you are with the rules, If you have the rules down use a pdf, if you havent got them down yet then just use dnd beyond
On the other hand… building a character by hand is a good way to have to learn the rules.
That is true
What do you mean by hand
Not using any kind of automated tool.
So like a Google pdf?
And typing onto it/filling in forms? Yup.
The act of copying things over from one place to another engages more parts of your brain & makes it more likely that you’ll retain the info.
(Can you tell I used to be a teacher?)
Yes you remind me of my 10th grade teacher
If I make a character should I also plan out a rough idea of what additions to take at each level too
At most, consider the subclass you’d take at 3rd level
Subclass consideration is important because some subclasses prefer certain stats, blade singing wizard, arcane trickster rogue as examples. But a lot of decisions like spells can be dependent on your party or how you play your character in the adventure you’re a part of
Hey all! I’m really new to actually playing but reading through the channel has been so helpful already. Will most likely have questions I’m sure

Hey
Hi! How are you?
Same 😂
can someone help me pleaseee
Check #find-a-game maybe? I took a look at it and there's some campaigns in there 🤷♀️
Hi, I'm very new to DnD and I wanted to know what I need to start playing? I already have the free PDF of rules from wizards and a character sheet for a character I created recently
Other than people, that’s about it.
Hello new friends! Just started playing d&d a month ago with some friends locally. Would love to find an online group. 😄

Tried setting up “looking for dm” didn’t get any luck😔
Anyway, what’s the best class in y’all’s opinion?
I know this might be a really, really stupid question but does DnD work in a sort of personalized or direct 1-to-1 play type thing?
or like, really small group of 3 or something?
it's 100% doable
im biased as hell but i loved my warlock aasimar
Understandable
I chose bard and I’m kinda suffering from being a support🙏
But it’s fun
hiya 👋
Hi
Noo being a bard is awesome, you’ll start to appreciate it when you level up

okay so I went to #looking-for-players and saw something I am interested in, it says to DM me directly and not to reply on the post. Is the name pinged at the top of the post the DM?
like that is the account of the dm right
It's the person name (e..g. the @username), not monodrone (monodrone is the bot making the post for you).
okay
Yeah I love the role not gonna lie, it’s fun. Never knew being a support would be this much fun
Hi everyone, my name is TK and I’m new here. Looking to make new friends and finally find a group to play with. 😊💜
Hello guys always wanted to try playing D&D but couldnt find any interested people im my friend group. I would actually love if someone can help me with this cause i know very little about the game:)
Hey guys i am looking for a group to play dnd with preferably online and kind of teach me the less known basics on the way (i know the very basic stuff through baldurs gate 3 so im not entirely unknown to save throws and the like)

Hello everyone, I'm Fabian and I'm very new to the D&D scene. I look forward to learn about the game and find a group to play with ☺️
Hello taz first of all you should see and watch many videos and you should buy the game if you can afford it
Okay thanks 🙂
I have a personal biase for aberrant mind or echo knight lizardfolk or Drow
- Aberrent Mind is a Sorcerer subclass with psychic powers.
- Echo Knight is a Fighter subclass where you have a magic "ghost" of yourself that you can control.
- Lizardfolk are a humanoid lizard species.
- Drow are another species option, also known as Dark Elves.

Let me emphasize for folks that you can get a lot of mileage out of the free rules.
Welcome!
Hiiiii ^-^
I'm in need of help, please! So, we wanna try DnD, but the issue is none of us have ever played it before and they appointed me as DM!
so, I'm a little familiar with the rules, been trying to learn before we start. I've seen stuff like Magic The Noah and I've played videogames inspired by DnD but not the actual game itself. We are all on discord and I'd like to know a good place to start?
I've heard it's good to start with a premade adventure, but where do I find one, and where do we play? I know there are many sites and tools but I am not sure which to start with because the options seem overwhelming.
I'm reading the pins but I still feel a little lost, eheheh...
You can find pre-made adventures all over the Internet just by Googling. DMsGuild is also a good destination.
You don't have to play using a platform. You can just run things in your imagination. If you want to use a platform for maps and tokens, Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo are free.
okay so quick question if I wanted to create a shadow like rogue character how would I go about doing that? Species and build wise?
Thank you.
#character-discussion is where you wanna be.
So, if we wanted to use Roll20, could we find pre-published adventures on the site that are ready to load up?
OK.... in my opinion, @spark iron , the most economical road for you and your friends to take would be picking up one of the two starter sets: Either the Starter Set, including the adventure Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, or the Essential Kit featuring the adventure Dragon of Icespire Peak.
(Btw we all live far away so it has to be accessible online)
You can buy content on Roll20, but you don't have to buy material there. You can run an adventure you found for free, import the maps, and you're good to go.
As a physical product, either box is about half the price of a single print rulebook, and the adventures there are written in a way to help provide coaching for new DMs in what/how to plan. They also include pregenerated characters that can, but don't have to be used, and will take the group from level 1 to level 4. I'm about 90% sure both adventures are available to buy on Roll20 if you wish.
Good single-session beginner-friendly adventures to check out: The Delian Tomb, Peril in Pinebrook, The Silvyr Tower, The Green Blight, or any of Winghorn Press's pay-what-you-want stuff.
The Green Blight is tied to this handy new GM guide (https://howtogm.guide/), and The Silvyr Tower is designed specifically for new DMs.
Stormwreck uses pregenerated characters; Icespire does not.
-# Incorrect
None of us have money to pay for anything btw, ik it makes things inconvenient but we're kinda struggling, so we have to use free options.
Huh. I thought I remembered all 3 boxes had included pregens.
The resources I linked to above are all free.
Yeah, I'm wrong. Sorry! 😅
There's some other freebies here you can use:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1827-adventuring-on-a-budget-the-free-d-d-resources-on
Thx! Rn I'm checkin Roll20 to see what it has to offer, I'll check that out too. ^-^

Hi I am very new to this. I tried playing one time and stuck as the DM it was horrible
just want to be a character how can I

So I'm about to play a spellcaster for the first time and the terminology is killing me
Let me get this straight;
- Spells known is the NUMBER OF DIFFERENT SPELLS I know at the time
- Spell slots are just how many spells of THAT LEVEL I can cast in combat, meaning even though I can have 5 level 1 spells I can cast only 4 in combat
- I can cast ANY SPELL I was as long as I have a spell slot for that spell (cantrips excluded)
Sorcerer, I simpathise with the idea I did 0 work for my powers - purely genetic stuff
Yup
Also to my understanding an arcane focus can serve instead of the material components? Is it like one time use or?
They can serve in place of material components as long as they don’t have a listed cost
Example of non/listed cost perchance?
So it can replace the licorice root used in Haste, but not the 50 gp Diamond used in Chromatic Orb
Ohhh, gotcha
How would I join a campaign, I’ve applied to some and haven’t gotten a response
I don’t really use facebook
So i just created a Rogue Halfing now what
I made a catboy but idk what class to make him
He's half human
Do you know your average catboy in a maid dress
That's the main basis for him
Ok
I'll look it up
Anyone starting a group? I wanna play so bad!
I have tried the looking for players no luck
Your a DM?
no I tried it once didn't like it
everything fell a part when i tried with few people
Hey peeps, I was wondering if I can join a game and get a feel so I can start playing and enjoy a new experience
Hi
how does one get into playing because i dont really wanna jump into a campain and need everything explained to me
I'm basically "stuck" on the character sheet page and I have no idea how to "progress" beyond that. I'm finished making my first character 🤣

We can't teach folks how to play one on one. Please read through #learn-to-play and see the free basic rules linked in the previous messages. Also check out videos of folks playing D&D on YouTube/Twitch to see how folks play D&D. Feel free to ask specific questions here or in an appropriate channel.
The verbal component of spellcasting is basically not-normal-language - it's a verbalization that is noticeable and understood as part of the magical process of casting a spell.
Sorta like abracadabra? Ok cool. thanks
Yep! Like that.
hey guys (: noob here, would love to jump in a campaign

Hi! not exactly new to dnd but ultimately a beginner when it comes to actually playing. I have a few questions when it comes to that (specifically about dming a game) and i'm not exactly sure if i can ask here first or if i should go directly to #dm-discussion ?
Just interested in how it works & would love to play
a friend of mine is really into it & i wanna have some basic knowledge before jumping in
anybody got some tips?
I suggest checking this out.
Hey I was wondering how if you could join campaigns here or if you have to pay for one. I saw in the find a game you had to pay
A few are paid, many are free
Ok many thanks
Hello im new to dnd and i want to buy new miniatures where can i buy them?
There are services like HeroForge that let you design your own! They can then sell you the print or you can buy the file and print it yourself.
A lot of my minis come from off the shelf packs I see at hobby shops. I also sometimes use minis from other games as long as they kind of make sense!
Good luck!
Thank you very much!!!
Are there someone able to help me with the campaign I'm setting up?
It will be a campaign about escaping or taking over a slave-camp, surviving the oncoming struggles and then build a town
The setting and plot is finished however i am a bit lost on how i can execute this.

Start with #learn-to-play and the free basic rules linked to in that bot message above.
Feel free to ask specific questions here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide to see the many channels we have for specific D&D topics).
Hey I am a bit new and I tried looking at some games but I don't exactly know all the rules and I'm trying to find a homebrew but I can't find it in #find-a-game so does anyone know a homebrew game that welcomes beginners and does not have an age limit
Perhaps you would be best off finding an intro-level game first to learn how to play, then start looking for whichever particular homebrew you're interested in.
And let's say you know the amount of nothing except fantasy and the dice and that's it about it
I would suggest taking a look at the Dyno post above as well as #learn-to-play , both of which have links to the 2024 Free Rules

Hello I'm also new but I know a little about dnd and I think a one shot would be a good starting point because they are shorter and it requires less commitment to play
hey! when creating a new character for a high level campaign, how do I chose magic items? there are SO many
Depends on what your DM decides how it works for their game/campaign. Check with them.
I don't understand modifier scores. So if you roll a low ability score, you're penalized even more with a worse modifier?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
A low ability score does impact whether you'll be as successful or not using that ability or skills based on that ability due to the modifier
So it's meant to be that way
Yes - characters should not be awesome at everything
The game is built around an adventuring party of 3-6 characters (typically) with different strengths, weaknesses, backgrounds and classes.
If I roll using random generation, do my scores have to be in order of how I rolled them?
Nope. Not unless your DM says that's how to do it.
So if I rolled say a 13 10 11, I can assign them to strength, then intelligence, then dex
I will recommend not rolling unless it's what the DM/table has said to do and even then, see if they want to view the rolls to ensure no cheating, etc.
Wait
oh well, I'm the DM and I'm actually asking the question on behalf of my players lol
idk how to have them chose magic items, I don't want the list to seem overwhelming to chose from but if that's how it's usually done then they'll have some reading to do haha
The ability score determines the modifier, which affects the dice roll during actions. So does the ability score do anything during actions or is that all it does?
Generally, the simplest way to do ability scores to start with is called the standard array: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#GenerateYourScores
Figuring where to put your higher and lower numbers without penalising your class features is key to making the character you want.
The modifier is what counts. The score itself is more for keeping track.
#dm-discussion might be able to help you there.
Specific scores may come up with certain rules. Long jump distance, lifting strength, and carrying capacity, for example, are determined using your Strength score instead of the modifier.
What is a spellcasting ability modifier and how do you calculate it?
Is the stat modifier used to determine your spell attack modifier and save DC
Different classes have different spellcasting ability modifiers as noted in their class pages
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/spells/#SavingThrows
"Spell save DC = 8 + your spellcasting ability modifier + your Proficiency Bonus"
@wild onyx "Spell save DC = 8 + your spellcasting ability modifier + your Proficiency Bonus" is the equation im working on. But I dont know how to find the "spellcasting ability modifier". I dont know what a spellcasting ability modifier is.
What class is your character?
I dont know yet. I might play wiz or druid
Wizards use Intelligence, druids use Wisdom.
(Why can I not find where that's referenced in the Free Rules?)
I cant find that either :/
Your class has a spellcasting ability: Int., Wis. or Cha.
Your spellcasting ability modifier is therefore your Int., Wis., or Cha. modifier.
Wizards use Int., so you’d add your Int. modifier there.
Druids use Wis., so you’d add your Wis. modifier there.
So if I have 10 int my spellcasting ability modifier is 10?
Each ability has an ability score, a number from 1-20.
And then based on that score, you have an ability modifier, a number from -5 to +5.
If your Int. score is 10, you’d have an Int. modifier of +0.

Hey, Im a player looking to get into dnd
What class is the easiest to get started with?
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
Thanks
You wouldn't happen to have a link to an instance of where a class's spellcasting ability is stated in the Free Rules, by any chance?
Hey, how do I write in the #looking-for-dm channel?
Read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use the LFG channels
Yeah, it’s stated in each class individually, as shared above.
The Class Overview table also shows the primary ability(s) for every class:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#ClassOverview
And while that table doesn’t explicitly identify their spellcasting abilities, it does nevertheless include the class’s spellcasting ability in the primary ability for each.
Hey me and my girlfriend are looking to get into dnd, is there a specific app we can download to find people to play with?
The lfg channels in this discord is a great place to start. As UndyingNoob said above, #find-a-game has a good rundown on how best to use them.
I’m new as well and have already found a game that fits my needs and applied for it. Applications close in a day and I’m quite excited to get in a vc with the dm for an interview.
There are all kinds of games in the find a player channel.
We had watched some yt videos of the game, is the dnd that gets played here with drawings?
Like someone on a big map creating the plot, thats what we were looking for
Were you able to play same day?
Every game is different and every dm runs things differently. Some games are listed as short one shots and some are more fleshed out full adventures. All up to the dm. If you scroll the looking for players channel you’ll see people post different games they are planning to host and what they will be like. So you can pick what fits you and apply for that.
No, the campaign I applied for is longer so the dm wants to let people apply for a few days, then run some interviews to select players before starting the campaign.
They need 5 people and 13 have applied, so theres a chance I’m not selected, in which case I will apply for another game.
If a DM is being thoughtful about building a good group, you probably wont get into a game right away. But that is a good thing. You want a DM that cares about the quality of the experience for everyone. Maybe their campaign just wont fit everyone’s character, etc.
To clarify, while #find-a-game can help you connect with a group here on this server, games of D&D aren’t actually played here.
Where and how any group wants to play is ultimately up to that group.
Right, itll be up to the group. In my case I applied for one that is a combo of the DMs discord for vc and tabletop simulator on steam. With ofc D&D Beyond.
More prepped for this player interview than I was for exams. 😎
Have all three of my potential characters all set up, flexible backstory bits arranged, potential preexisting connections to other party members.

if someone replies to this message later and im not online or active currently I would appreciate if they could send me a quick direct message, thanks

For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
i think its more of a group thing then other
What is the best stuff to buy when starting out with dnd
You may want to use #looking-for-dm to seek out a DM with a play-by-post game.
The Free Rules are free. Try before you buy:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
For a slimmed down test-run, how about Peril in Pinebrook, an introductory adventure:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
The essentials kit truly is great. I love to dm that adventure to this day. It's very straight forward
hi im new and am looking for a beginners DnD play by post
You could go to #looking-for-players and use the search for messages containing the text: pbp.
Hey
Hi what does pbp stand for
Why is Sneak attack for rogue called that when it should be "exploit weakness". Nothing about it requires stealth, using sneak to get advantage is just side option.
Play by post. It refers to playing using text rather than in person or over voice chat.
Stealth to get away quietly?
Lots of items could go bump even being careful where sound can travel and possibly cause an echo
Could be a heavy walker with very heavy foot noise
Could also be heard by sonar or radar sounds.
Hey guys, wanting to get into DnD, Should I try creating a character template before joining games or how about should I proceed? Or is it just a join a random game kind of thing and the DM will show me the ropes? Thank you in advance 🙂
Take a glance through the Free Rules, put a level one character together to see how it works, then start looking around for games.
The usual process is you join a game then create a character as they may have specific rules or restrictions regarding character creation. Wouldn't hurt doing some practice sheets, though.
I’m not new to dnd, just this server, and I’m wondering if there’s any channel for dnd stories? Like funny/interesting things that happened while playing?
Thank you
Hello
I’m new to dnd, I’ve bought the starter set and watched a load of videos to help me understand it better, but I still don’t understand.
What questions did you still have?
The main one was finding a group but also starting a game
This article goes over the basics of finding a group: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/711-how-to-find-a-dungeons-dragons-group-to-play-with
This server also has Looking for Group/Game channels. #find-a-game has the instructions.
Hey!Can anyone help find a place/or explain this basic rules please! (^-^)/
are there any day 1 noob friendly campaigns available in this server? I have just watched a ton of dimension 20 and have always wanted to play the game, but I don't know anyone that does dnd stuff.
Oh I want to dm I remember a few rules from a club I was in.I have a basic idea planned around!
(^.^)
I just need to learn the rules
I guess the first step is a desire to learn right?
Hello, my friend and I want to get into DND so we can do duet or 2-3 adventurer groups. I would like to learn to DM so I can put some friends through it. What are the best resources and would anyone be willing to DM a quick one time adventure to see the flow for us 2 as players?
Some resources that may help.

Hey guys, whats up ?
If you know the rules, you need a group. You can create one from among your friends and social networks, advertise at places like local libraries and game stores, and/or use online channels (like #find-a-game here) to organize an online group!
Sry im newbie, but this group its all about 5.0
Or have some ppl, like 3.5 and play 3.5v
Most folks here play fifth edition, but we do have #dnd-elder-editions to discuss previous ones. Occasionally a game for another edition crops up in the Looking for Game/Group channels, but my impression is that's uncommon.
Oh, thank u bro
We play 3.5 yesterday, but its 1x per month, i need more ... i start a 4M ago, but i love and would like play more and more
