I meant i made one (sorry i misunderstood)
If you want i can send it to you but the main problem im having is dming
Got it. Well I'd still suggest using a pre-written adventure as that way the story details are all dealt with and you can focus more on running the game.
Hi how is everyone?
Doing well - welcome to the official D&D Discord server
What is a prewritten story? is it just layed out with every small action
I wanted to know how to join an online dnd game 😅
Hey
We have looking for game channels here - check out #find-a-game (and read it carefully) to learn how to sue those channels to find a game.
Because DND storys can just go way out of line when the players do sidequests or something like that
or may do something different that branches out the whole storyline or changes it
Like official adventure books: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources#Adventures
Or using adventures written up by other D&D folks available through DMsGuild (website)
These have the major story, maps, and monsters all setup.
Ohh cool
Thank uuu
But just like i said i already layed out a storyline thats prewritten and a map and some monsters ready i just dont know where to start
Well folks in #dm-discussion can help you polish things up and discuss DM techniques and tools to help you run your games
alr ima check it out
Quick question can i just view some ongoing games to understand?
How it is and where do i go to do that
There are lots of D&D games streamed on YouTube and Twitch - I'd suggest taking a look there and see how others play D&D (recognizing that many of these are for entertainment first, not for teaching folks how to play or run D&D games).
Still useful though IMO
Alr do u have any recommendations
- I like the Dungeon Dude's "Dungeons of Drakkenheim".
- Critical Roll is also very popular D&D stream (but please, please, please don't think you have to have minis and terrain and lights/sound effects to run a D&D game)
- Outside Xbox's Oxventure is a fun one (and shows a very patient DM managing some wildly chaotic player characters). They just started a new more serious campaign (less zaney).
- High Rollers is another one - I think it's particularly good at showing how the DM created homebrew rules/mechanics to help with the kind of D&D game/story they want to tell.
Thanks ill be sure to check them out
can i also use roll20 to check out some running games?
Most groups tend not to be open to outsider viewing while they are playing (beyond folks running livestreams of their games)
You can certainly look and see if there is a group open to that but I'd suspect you'll not find many.
Alright thanks for the help very much appreciated
No problem! Just remember the goal of playing D&D is to have fun - both for yourself and the folks playing with you.
Hi
Hi, I need help, someone have a one shot campaign that I can join? It'll be my first time playing
Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
Thx I'll try
You could also see if there’s a game store near you that plays using Adventurer’s League rules.
Or check out the monthly Virtual D&D Weekend:
https://discord.com/events/516367331358801950/1294037010406707202
Is there a way to search for not paid games?
#looking-for-players and #looking-for-community both have free games.
All paid games should be in #paid-looking-for-game
Thx
What guide should I use in making my first character? (I am very new.) 😂😭
id recommend watching yt tuts for it like ginny di or smth

Ditto but I wanna learn how to be a DM so I can have permadeath and to come back you have to answer nonsense true or false questions and then depending one how many the player gets right changes how they come back, say they get 3 out of 5 right they can come back with low health and deafness in one ear but the ear switches randomly affecting all save throws for a set time. Or like say your a bard and get 1out of 5 you come back but can only shout and it doesn't go away until the player does a successful seduction with the big debuff active.
Hello btw
I have a weird couple questions I am hoping someone can help me with?
I have two kids I am gonna GM for. But all of the modules I would want to use are geared for 4 players. Instead of making it easier, I figured I could turn their dogs into sidekicks. Anyone have any ideas how to do that and make it balanced?
2md I plan to bring them through Dragons of Stormwreck Isle (2022 Starter Kit), then Dragons of Icespire Peak (2019 Essential Kit), Beyond the Dragon of Icespire Peak (the sequel to the 2019 Kit), then Mines of Phandelver (2014 Starter Kit), before Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk (sequel to the 2014 Starter Kit). Could that be done cohesively as one long campain, or is that a bad idea?
Hi Guys how does someone attack an enemy my hole group is new to the game
See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#Combat
-
- Basically on the players turn in initiative, they tell the DM what they'd like to do ("I'd like to attack the goblin with my longsword").
-
- The DM asks the player to roll an attack roll for their character. This is rolling a d20 and adding any modifiers or bonuses the character has for that attack/feature.
-
- If the roll + modifiers + bonuses is equal to or higher than the target's Armor Class, the attack hits.
-
- The DM then has the player roll the damage for their character's attack.
A natural 20 roll is an automatic hit and is known as a critical hit. For these hits, the damage dice is doubled. Meaning if the normal damage dice is 1d6, the player can now roll 2d6.
A natural 1 roll is an automatic miss regardless of modifiers or bonuses.
And how do a as the dm letthe creature attack the player
The create statblock has the creature's attack features. On the creature's turn in initiative, they make attack rolls just like players do by rolling a d20 and adding in any modifiers and bonuses. If the attack is higher than the character's Armor Class, it hits. You then roll damage and have the player remove that amount from their Hit Point pool.
And how do I Access this statblock??
Creature statblocks: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creature-stat-blocks
Or in the Monster Manual or other D&D book.

So joining a new campaign and if they require a lvl 4 character I can just make him lvl 4 from the get go?
Yep - start at the level the DM and group have established for their game.
so my friend said there is a certain way you can make your own enemies
so how do you do it?
Homebrew is the term used to describe making up your own creations for use in your game. We have an entire channel for it: #homebrew
There’s rules for that in the Dungeon Master’s Guide.
But an easy trick (especially for beginners) is to simply take an existing monster, use its existing rules, but describe it in a different way.
is that a book?
Yeah, it’s one of the three core rulebooks (alongside the Player’s Handbook and the Monster Manual).
The updated version comes out in just a couple weeks, and sounds like it’ll do a much better job at actually teaching how to DM.

Hey is anyone looking for a newbie I just learned about dnd and was hoping to join a game
yk what sucks about being so young i cant play dnd basically at all cause 99% of the time its 18+ which i understand but yeah it sucks and school dnd club IS BAD lol
hey look at the looking for players channel
Thanks
np
Hello
hi
So, I’m new new and fresh to dnd and was wondering if you can teach me the ropes
Really new tho
oops might wanna ask someone else im really new as well haha
i recommend reading rule books
try to find some of those
Alright, thanks
yeah np sorry i cant help much
anyone there?
hm?
u mind helping me with some choices for feats?
hmmmm i can but i am new
as ruined, i can choose between 3 dnd traits:
alert: +5 initiative, cant be surprised if conscious and no advantage rolls on me for enemies that cant be seen
Tough: hp max increased by 2x level
or skilled: proficient in 3 more skills of any choice
ok
jsut pick one that sound nice
bc all three are good
and im not entirely new, so if u have questions u can ask me too
ok so hats your buikd leaning towards
Where do I search for a new open campaign?
yea i thought so too
i am lv 3 starting elf rigue as soulknife variant
and my stats are through the roof XD
oh yes thats pretty good then
i cant play dnd
im to young everyones 18+ i swear
hey hey
looking for players go there
haha yeah
im 3 years youngerr tho..
sad
ahhhh XD i think i started dnd when i was 13, playing with friends in covid XD
and the community for the most part here at least is older
yeah nice
i dont have dnd friends
true, people tend to jsut go for video games now
yeah i play video games but honestly i would rather play dnd 24/7
haha it can be way more fun
exactlyyyyyyy
my school now has a dnd club that was made last week, and we have already 10 players with 2 dms, a nice spread
every day i look for one and 18+ 18+ 18 + 18+ 18+
XD understandable mate
nice my school dnd doesn't seem like it would be fun sadly
ahhhh, rip
yeppppp
Dang lucky my school has nothing fun
something i find really funny, as a rogue, i have expertise even at lv 1, so i can choose 2 things im proficient in and double it, so currently i have +9 sleight of hand and +9 stealth, bou can get like +15
NICE HAHA
AINT NO ONE LOOKING AT ME
YEP lolll bro i've been looking for a playthrough for about a year or more at this point
rip mate, i was looking for one too, until my friends were like: lets start a dnd session
feels like it but not yet almost a year
LUCKY i wish i had friends like that or atleast ones that takes the intititave for once
i mean just ask, the reason why they told me is bc i was like: any of u play dnd?
yea i only have one friend that plays i asked thats how i know i was sayin in general but they have one at home so yeah i am still seeing if we could tho
ahhhh
but we would also have to find players and a dm if we dont wanna
if we could get a session
if there is an opportunity outside of school ill join too, but it can be hard to find, especially if You are so young
yeah it sucks but its true
i can join if yall want, at least im not even 18 yet, but DMs are hard to find sometimes
and character creation can take a long time
i wish i could get one out of school since my school one doesn't seem or sound good at all LOL
yeah probably not we wont be able to make one most likely
sadge
cause he is also in clubs and has a session at home
as a session at home? whoa thats nice
yep his fam
wow, thats nice
well, imma go create my character backstory now, good luck finding a session mate, youll get it
ok ty make a good character lol
i say its pretty good
if im proficent in like dex saving throws, does that mean im also proficent in dex based skills
uhh wahts your dex modifier
dex based skills depend on your proficiency in that skill if u have one, and your dex modifier
saving throws and skill modifiers are not exactly the same thing
making a sheet rn not that far yet but my class says im proficent in dex saving throws, not sure if that would trinkle down to also being proficent in dex skills like acrobatics
so like if u have +5 dex modifier, like me, my dex skills would be a +5 like stealth or acrobatics
but saving throw, in case of something dm asks for, would be a +7
if u have a smaller number, like a 16, you would have a +3 for skills (without proficiency), and a +5 for saving throws
should i buy or nah?
so currently, my acrobatics modifier, is +5, because of my dex stat bonus, and no proficiency.
my stealth skill has proficiency, so its +7,
my history skill, which doesnt take dex, takes int, is a +3
but my saving throws are dex and int, which is +7 and +5, so saving throws are basically your stat bonus +proficiency bonus ( i think, i might be wrong)
But skills can have bonus modifiers. Rogue at lv 1 gain expertise, which allows for double proficiency bonus for a skill, so my stealth is a +9 rn
whut
how would i play dnd online [not dnd online] like something similar to roll 20
are these free or paid
Owlbear has free options. I recommend folks start with it if they haven't used a VTT and then you can learn what extra things you want and find the right VTT to invest from there
how much is founfry
foundry
ok i might try owl bear first though
thanks man
yeah im on computer

Hello, was wondering if theres a way for anyone with a link to look at my character's backstory? Or is that only available to the DM? My friend and I were trying to exchange character sheets but we couldn't look at the background section, ik its a small thing but I just wanna know
yeah
no, i asked her and she said she would do it tomorrow
i did make the character public
thats what i figured, but its not showing up for some reason
he doesnt see the notes tab on my sheet
let me check the visibility again
can i dm you a screenshot of what it looks like?
Hello. (I dont know what to say since its my first time using discord and it feels weird texting a bunch random ppl at once wich i also dont know at al) I am completely new to dnd and just need help learning the game. (i also would greet it when i would find some guys to play a pre existing campaign so i can fully get into the game, i would want to dm so i would need patient players to help me in learning the game and enjoying the campaign 🙂 )
Hello, I am completely new to DnD and I've been wanting to play it for a while, but sadly none of my friends want to play it so I've never really gotten the chance to. I hope that someone here is able to teach and play with me
yo
hi, ive never really played DND tho i have sometimes looked into it, ive wanted to play it or quite a while but noone i know irl wants to play it/doesnt care or it and people i know online arent especially interested in it either, ive know that id honestly enjoy a more chill game but never got around to actually joining a group online until now and would really want to try it
id be up to play with you. (and alun, if you both want to) I might be new too but i think thats just third times the charm.
sure, i wouldnt mind, if you are available on weekends and in the CET timezone it would be beyond ideal
Hhhiiiii~
hi :3
Hruu?
I just put together the golden dragon minifig from lego and now im just gonnaa.. dive into dnd
I tried diving before but have 0 friends and then remembered “hey dnd can be played online!” So here i am
im okei i think, im just, really interested and have no irl or online people interested so i came here, i enjoy artwork so id probably enjoy designing things ect and also quite interested in the RP of it
im from europ so there shouldnt be much difference in our time.
and im definetly available on the weekends, maybe not every weekend but, yea sure. (i guess we just need to make it out)
Yeah, and find other players ofc
Can I DM you? So we can discuss this in a chat?
of course
Hey guys, i want to get into dnd and play it , but sadly i don't know where to go to find ppl to play with (online because no place near me plays dnd and i'm lacking friends to play with atm) , if any one could help with that i would appreciate it alot ! ❤️

Okay thanks I'll see if I can find one
How do you handle all those spells ? Do you just know them ? do you use cards ?
I tried making a list with simplified terms and a city/dungeon/exploration loadout. Any other ideas ?
Okey let's start with something easy, do you want to play dnd5e?
I hope so? 😭 it seems fun i think-
You can follow this guide here then
To learn what is dnd, how to play and learn the rules of the game
Uhhh
Absolutely wild a lego minifigure is the spark into a new era for me
Theres so much to read tho;-;
Was this a mistake? 💀
Indeed, to learn how to play the game you gotta read the rules, you could watch some YouTube videos that explain it but those also require time and focus
Thats like 2 things i dont have
I cant focus for long periods of time
😭😭
Is there a good vid to watch? Or
Should i js quit this
And everyones dead. Ok
Thank, ima go shower then watch it. What after that tho?
Then?
Hello!
you have stats in, but the modifiers aren't correct in some places. It goes up or down by one for every even number.. so a Stat of 8 is a -1 modifier, 10 is zero, 12 is +1
anything odd in between remains the same as the lower even number so a 13 in the stat is still a +1. It does not become +2 unless the Stat is 14 or 15.
the modifier under Dex is way off. Dex of 16 is a +3 just as your Con of 16 is showing +3.. so should dex.
the saving throws section also is incorrect based off your stats (and would change slightly depending on your class)
Hey
no, i was just saying hello! srry if this channel is just for questions
It’s for helping folks new to D&D get started with learning core game rules and mechanics.
Is there any games in here or
No - we don’t actually host games here
You can find games using our LFG channels (see the link Umee shared)
How long does a game last
Damm. I dont have that much time often ;-;
Where do i make a character again
Uhh
Which app?
Depends on the group
It’s not a video game you install and can instantly join a match/game if that’s what you’re looking for
Hello
Im looking for a normal guide 💀
Well we have #learn-to-play and links to the free basic rules- I’d start there
Im watching a playlist rn ;-;
That can help also for sure.
Handbooker helper xd
Good series and helps explain some of the core rules and mechanics.
Core? 💀 dude how many are there
-_-brotha
Ykw. Maybe this ISNT for me
Nice talking to yall tho?
It's normal to get a little intimidated by all the rules at the beginning but you don't need to memorize them all. Just some initial ones to help you get started and you can always ask for help and clarification here 🙂
there's no rush to learn, but it is a game with a fair amount of mechanics. They aren't usually super complex but it can feel like a lot of rules which makes it seem like it is harder than it is.
Which is partly why the basic rules/free rules are a thing outside of the whole book of details. It gives you enough to start playing and then you learn as you go from there. No one expects you to remember it all
I have my FIRST EVA (well…. Technically second???) session tommorow and our dm gave us the homework of writing our characters lore/backstory and I’m gonna be so real I have no idea what he ACTUALLY wants ?? is there any dos/donts for writing backstories I should know of before I start 🙁🙁🙁
- Keep it simple
- Keep it relatively vague (no specific town names, etc)
- Have a good reason that your character wants to leave their old life and start adventuring
I like a good Swiss cheese backstory: enough there to do something with even if it’s full of holes.
Just a paragraph or two that explains why this character is notable to the story, and gives them a reason to pursue the adventure ahead.
Any details that you don’t need to start playing, just skip. Your DM can help you fill those in gaps or use them to surprise you later.
Ultimately, though, if you’re not sure what your DM is looking for, you could always just ask them.
I am new to DnD and really want to learn more about it. I’d appreciate it if an experienced DM is able to private message me and perhaps join my small group on Discord? (timezone of preference is CET)
looking for guide in creating a character or something friend?
We don't offer one on one VC teaching but please take a look at #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in channel for useful links to help get you started. I'd recommend looking through the free basic rules and maybe watching folks play some D&D games streamed on YouTube/Twitch.

That's awesome! I hope it goes well.
Me and my friend want to start a campaign but have no idea if we would be able to get anyone to join and how 😅
Hi there! Been seeing a lot of things DND related and I wanted to pick up the game again, I played a campaign back when I was very young, and did about two sessions of a campaign with a few other people a couple of months ago. So I'm still very new to the game and how it works

yes
"You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have."

right. i see no mention in the wizard class features that the spell slots must be used for wizard spells. there is this however, "If another Wizard feature gives you spells that you always have prepared, those spells don’t count against the number of spells you can prepare with this feature, but those spells otherwise count as Wizard spells for you."
specific trumps general rule
good to know, thanks
Hello! I'm looking for some help in using the D&D Beyond character sheet interface.
Specifically, my character was just recently raised from the dead. Is there anyway to add the -4 modifier to the dice rolls as per the rules until I take a long rest 4 times?
Yo can someone help me fill out my character sheet?
You making one in person or online?
2nd chapter of the free rules goes through the process of making a character: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
Mhm, what are you using to make the sheet?
Hey, I am pretty new to dnd but I had an idea for a character but I don't know if it would be boring or really cool. Some context first, dead by daylight had a semi recent collab with dnd and a survivor in dead by daylight is bill from left for dead, I think it would be cool if bill somehow escaped the realm (dead by daylight has an entity that basically keeps survivors and killers in a dimension where the game takes place so it can feed off of their emotion) and he is put back not in his own world but the world of dnd. I just wanna know if this is unoriginal or cool
thx, should I just kinda copy this to that channel?
am i able to play DnD without paying to play?

(legally) theres the SRD and free online resources and virtual tabletops
Question.
My first meetup is going yo level by milestone based progression. Less focus on combat more roleplay.
Im a lvl3 artificer armorer(guardian).
Any suggestions on things i should focus on besides trying to minmax for combat? As the tinkerer I may be needed for a lot.
Well it is for a session of couple of hours, not to mention the DM will have to do prep outside of the sessions
only one person in the group needs to have the source material to share
find a free session then? or start a group with friends
oftentimes it is the dm with the source material
or do you mean the material
But there are plenty of free DMs, you'll find many free games posted daily in #looking-for-players
this is a little over welming but thanks!
A more budget friendly alternative to purchasing the books for your own use is to have everyone at the table pitch in a fraction of the cost and share the books around the table. If everyone uses a pen and paper character sheet there is nothing stopping this working just as well as otherwise.
For online campaigns you can use D&D Beyond to share sourcebooks with other people in the same campaign. I however dont have much experience with this.
Thank you!!!!!!!!
im really new to dnd and i was looking for a game to join but none of them r in my timezone cuz i live in asia😭😭 noo
Finding a game can certainly be a struggle. The best advice is to just keep on going, I'm sure there will be some people somewhere in the world with strange schedules that happen to line up with your timezone. Looking in more places can also help speed up the process, facebooks pages, subreddits, this server's LFG and Roll20 are all good places to cast your lines
thanku!! 💖💖 i will try 😿
played my first seshing last night and im super pumped ... now im going crazy trying to find another game ... whats the best way to find a new group for beginers .. any help would be fantastic !
the FAQ in the above channel link has good advice for finding in-person games. For online games I recommend searching up the many facebook pages, subreddits, roll20 listings and the #find-a-game listings
The hardest thing for me has been finding ppl to play with lol I played in a online game until my schedule changed and I had to drop out. I used the dnd club at the university I went to so that could be a place for ppl to find others to play with.
I totally just had my first freak out about how I wasn't good enough to be a dm, and it's scary
I haven't even started yet, it's definitely everyone wanting to play home brewed characters
I barely understand the ones in the game
I feel bad because I want them to have fun with their characters and all that but it's so confusing
So I'll definitely try to get them to change to regular races and all that
Plus I'm tired and of course my sister needs to start Fighting with one of my friends (I literally didn't want to include her because I knew she'd be more drama then it was worth )
As a new DM, or even as a seasoned one, it is totally okay to say no to homebrew. The fun can be found in the group dynamic and the way they use the regular options to make extraordinary characters.
Yeah I think I am definitely going to get everyone who wanted home brew things and explain I need more time to adapt before
Sorry if I'm butting in but, as an extreme newcomer I have a question about character levels
is it best to just start at Level 1, or is that not "traditional"?
I'm still a bit iffy on stats and rulesets so I just wanna make sure
Yeah level 1 is what you should start a new character at, though feel free to plan out what your future levels will look like
Ahhh, aights
If a DM wants everyone to start at a different level they should/will tell you.
I seeee
yeah, some parties start at lvl 3
So I've heard, I'm mostly getting into DnD because of hearing stories of random nonsense inevitably happening during campaigns and hoping to create memories with that
But besides that my knowledge is extremely surface level lmao
i once makankosappo piccolo style a goblin while was grabbed by my healer in my party

Can you buy the books as gifts? Digital ones
Hello...interested in learning the ropes of dnd but i dont really wanna dive i to a random online game and be lost and overwhelmed...would anyone be interested in teaching a noob...30+ US eastern time...would prefer to find people who r close to same age but it doesnt really matter
Hello! I’m pretty new at dnd. Looking to learn the ropes and see if I can get into it. I’ve been roleplaying for about seven years so I’m not new on that. But definitely lost on where I would even start. From northern Germany but would prefer an English group if possible. Cool thanks
Hello! I'm new to dnd. I really want to play but don't have any friend who want to dm. so I have been dm for them myself but I have never actually played a game and don't really know the rules that well or how to be "good" at dm-ing. I am Dutch but do peak a good amount of English.
anyone who wants to help me learn the ropes
Hey I'm a newbie, doing a Lost Mines of Phandelver campaign and I want a decent paladin - but it will only be getting to level 4/5. Anyone got recommendations on what to go for given the low level range? 2024 rules
I'm lost so don't even try...
We have #character-discussion if you're looking for character build suggestions/ideas or just want to share more info about your character.
Hello. I recently got into DnD, but I don't know anyone who is interested. I'm from southern Italy, but I can speak english just fine. I'm looking forward to learn how to play the game.

yeah
Correct - if both are listed, both are needed to actually cast the spell.
Im new what do I do
@covert hare I'm new to, I notice it helps me to ask lots of questions slowly leaning i seem to be a R.A.W [rule as written] kinda person 😆
hey there ive just finally created my first char and also a custom pet but i cant seem to be able to add it under extras using dnd beyond any ideas why?
You can’t add creature statblocks to your character sheet on DDB I’m pretty sure. You’d have to make a note of it and keep the statblock open somewhere else. Enoki/Colossus are right, make sure you have homebrew enabled. Just make sure you clear anything custom or additional to normal character creation with your DM

Did you check to make sure that home brew content was enabled on your character sheet? It would probably be better to ask for help with this in #ddb-support
And if are adding stuff like pets etc you need to go to the website to add them, doesn’t work on the app
You can add things like familiars, Wild shape forms, pets, etc to your character sheet via the “extras” tab
Very interesting, for some reason I never interacted with that tab. Good to know, and I’ll addendum my comment
Hey guys, I'm new to this server, I am an artist trying to promote myself,
if anyone is interested in getting character sheet / design commissions in a semi-real or anime style please feel free to DM me
You should make a post in #dnd-advertisements !
ahhh was wondering if there is a channel for that, thanks!!
do you happe nto know any dms that are open to homebrew and have an open slot
You would have to ask yourself
i already put a post in the looking for dms
If you're going to get results faster, don't forget to check for games that DMs are advertising as well!
look in #looking-for-players , when i go searching for players i make my own post and dont look through #looking-for-dm that doesnt give enough information that i want
ah ok thank you guys
Is there a bot channel for commands?
what do you want to get better at specifically
What kind of commands?
Nevermind, found it LoL, I was asked to advertise a friend's game

what books do i read
If you're just getting started, the free rules will have the basic info that you need to know to play your first game. The Player's Handbook will be mostly the same as the free rules, just with more character creation and customization options. After that, most of the other books and optional rules, and more character creation options, so you read those whenever you get to them

there is a link to the Free Rule in the quick links section of the bot post above
so for now i just read the players handbook?
okay thanks!
If I'm playing a warlock with 2014 rules, would I just put the expanded spell list in with my normal spells on the spell sheet?
No. The warlock subclass's expanded spell list are added to the options for spells that you can pick from. You do not get them automatically
What about Mask of Many Faces?
Mask of Many Faces is an Invocation. If you have chosen that invocation, then you can add Disguise Self to your spell sheet, but you do not ever have to spend a spell slot to cast it. You can just do so for free
Alright, thanks
Can someone explain to me what attunement is and how it works? I read it on the website but didnt understand it
Essentially some items have an extra requirement called attunement and by default you can only attune to 3 things
Mechanically I think it's mostly just a way to limit how many powerful items you can use/which classes can use them
And how are those items attuned?
So basically just a short rest should work
Correct.
And is there a level requirement for classes to attune or to use attuned items?
The fiction might be that you're spending time sussing out the command word for a wand, or practicing with that new magic sword, or something similar.
Ah I see, so like "bonding" with the item
I can't think of an item that has a level requirement, but attunement requirements are listed in the item description.
The requirements are part of the item, yeah
So, for example, one of the recent preview items for the new version of the DMG is a Hat of Many Spells. It's a very rare item that requires attunement, specifically by a wizard.
If an items needs to be attuned by a wizard, can it be used later by a cleric for example? Or does it have to be attuned by the PC using it?
Can only be used by the attuned PC.
If you ever saw the old cartoon, the Hat of Many Spells was Presto's hat. Wouldn't have worked for one of the other kids.
So in this case, a sorcerer cant use the Hat of many spells
Correct.
Makes sense
That's why I said attunement was a way to restrict item use
Though it does sometimes have the side effect of making items that aren't very powerful also require attunement
And its 3 max
I know it was in the Uni adventure, too, but I'm not sure if that's still claimable if you didn't have it already.
Right.
Aight ty <3

Hello 🤗👋🏻 i am new i never played DnD and idk how 😔 anybody wanna play online? Maybe help me learn i have a friend that wants to play to
Take a look at the post right above yours for some help!
Alright
Without becoming attuned to an item that requires Attunement, you gain only its nonmagical benefits unless its description states otherwise.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#Attunement
So the Cleric could use it as a hat, but wouldn't be able to use any of its magical properties.
The same goes for a wizard who hasn't attuned to the hat.
Got it o7

You could try looking for a DM together, but the quickest way to get started would be for one of you to DM.
Or you could even each take a turn.
I got done finishing my first session as a dm! I'm so proud 😄
Concur. howtogm.guide has been recommended around here a lot, and the advice in it seems to my eye to be pretty solid.
Is playing as a Shar worshipper in Descent into Avernus worth it? Played a bit of Tomb of Annihilation (party disbanded due to the Bain of scheduling), wanting to play as the Glasya Tiefling Rogue Soulknife in there. Is it gonna be difficult?
going to depend on the GM, I think. I'm no Realmslore geek, but my recollection is that the Lady of Secrets isn't especially well thought of.
I'm not familiar with the module at all, but unless something inside the campaign book says to give you different encounters based on the players' characters' faith, it'll be entirely up to the DM. They may not engage with it at all, if they don't want to.
Just FYI, its against server rules to post content in any form that has been generated by AI
Though it seems like you put it in your own words, so that's probably not an issue
except for maybe being a plot spoiler
Probably the plot spoiler is gonna be an issue, yeah

Anybody got any advice for a beginner DM. Looking at running an adventure for some friends since we can't find anyone willing to DM. What's the best campaign to start with?
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
And then there's #dm-discussion if you wish to talk shop with other DMs
also, this has gotten a lot of recommendations: https://howtogm.guide/
As far as good starter adventures... hmmm.
There's Dragons of Stormwreck Isle
Lost Mines of Phandelvar
The Wild Beyond the Witchlight
And for third-party adventures, there's "A Wilde Sheep Chase" which you can get for free (https://winghornpress.com/adventures/a-wild-sheep-chase/) which I've heard is pretty good
I think that Dragon of Icespire Peak (in the Essentials Kit box) is probably more accessible than Lost Mine of Phandelver right now (unless you go for the Phandelver and Below hardcover).
I seen Storm wreck isle on the store. Is that premade or is there a lot for me to still do? Want to ease myself in with little work because I don't have the experience
It is a premade - so most of the story is there plotted out for you.
You may need to adjust here and there to fit your game style and what you find fun and what works well with your group.
Same applies to Lost Mine and to Icespire Peak. And all three have come in beginner products, with a reasonable amount of handholding.
Thank you very much folks. Will get icespire peak due to it having another 3 adventures that continue on from it
Witchlight has less handholding for beginners, but has a feature that the encounters can be outthought rather than outfought if you like. There's reasonably some incentive to do so, as I understand it.
Yeah it can as combat-less as you and the players want it to be.
Lost Mine and Icespire Peak, and the follow-on adventures, all sandbox in roughly the same geographic area. Not sure offhand how close to that area Stormwreck Isle is or isn't.
Yeah Icespire Peak after looking into it has the 3 that follow on in an order by recommendation. So will go with that so if it's enjoyable I can continue the story. If not it's a relatively cheap adventure to buy so not much will be lost
I am running my first group as a DM now. We started with Stormwrek Isle then moved into Phandelver and Below as Lv3. Worked very well.
Probably going straight from Stormwreck Isle to ||Wave Echo Cave||?
When I did it I stated LMoP from the beginning. No adjustments to NPC party’s and I still almost TPKd the group in Cragmmaw cave. I new have mostly all new players.
Can I join anyone’s Campaign I’m new and want to play I’ve been in 2 games before so I have a general understanding of how to play just want more experience
They were LV 3, sorry for the confusion, stilll trying to figure out discord..the party started with DoSI then moved into LMoP (PaB)

Figured I’d ask this here because this seems to be the “newbies ask questions” channel.
Hello! I’m probably just going to be lurking here, but I wanted to ask this question mostly because I’m planning on joining a dnd group in the future and I’m a little nervous.
Is there anything I should avoid doing while playing the game? I know there are obvious stuff about murderhobos and purposefully making people uncomfortable, but the fear of unintentionally making the game worse for other people is killing me so I wanna know what other stuff I shouldn’t be doing
I’ve played dnd before but it was pretty much only with friends and we were mostly just messing around, and I figured that things would be different in a more serious setting
Alright, thanks. I’ve been doing most of those things but I’ll definitely keep those in mind. I kinda have a bad habit of talking over people if I have something to say haha
between int, cha, and wis which ones tend to be more useful and what kind of sitautions are they for?
int is arcana/investigation/history/nature. solving mysteries, recalling information about cities and certain monsters. cha is persuasion/deception/intimdating. good for moving people and getting them on your side. wisdom is like sageness and is associsted with perception/survival/insight. good for noticing things like body language and if people are telling the truth.
in terms of combat, intelligence is the main spellcasting stat of the wizard and artificer. wisdom is the same for clerics, druids, rangers, and monks to a lesser extent. charisma is the main spellcasting stat of paladins, sorcerers, warlocks
the higher a spellcasting stat is the more likely your spells will do something rather than nothing
there also tends to be a lot more wisdom saving throws (in the 2014 monster manual) so having a decent amount of wisdom provides some nice defense in mental saves
Should I except a costom race
It appears to be a watch brand
Assuming this is a homebrew race, you would be best off assuming that it is not allowed, until your DM says otherwise
If you offered a description of the race I could perhaps offer an official alternative to use until you get that confirmation
im new and the only reason i wanna try dnd is because i thought it would be nice to play another person for a little while also i had a character in my head
Welcome! Being immersed in another world as a different person to your real life is as good a reason as any, so you're definitely in the right place

litiral child
wants to play dnd
cant bc no local clubs (at least ones for teens)
what do i do?
I spelled it wrong
Yeah that is certainly not an uncommon problem. For people that can't play in-person there are two alternatives; either playing online, or play-by-post
i've played online, its a pain in the A$$
Yeah, there are also other risks invovled being a minor that you should be careful of
What kind of issues are you running into with playing online?
long turns, misunderstood instructions, hard to keep track inbetween sessions bc i need to write my stuff down but lose it all the time
or do you mean online as in "dnd online" or other videogames
nah, online ttrpg play
ok
Long turns is definitely a problem that many online table suffer from and really only gets better as the players get more experienced
If im warlock 2/paladin 3 does eldritch blast fire twice?
What about warlock2/paladin5
Cantrips scale with your overall character level, not class levels. It fires twice
Cantrip upgrades function on total Character Level (as does your proficiency bonus)

can someone show me the ropes? id like to play
Hi and welcome! For newcomers we usually direct you towards the #learn-to-play channel rather than spelling everything out over text. There's a lot to cover so its much easier if you just try your best to read the rules first, and then bring any specific questions you might have back to this channel
can i vc with someone i lern way faster that way
You certainly wouldn't be the first to want to learn that way. Unfortunately there aren't many people around with that kind of spare time on their hands
At the end of the day D&D is just a game and a lot of very good writers have spent a lot of time making the game as easy as it can be to learn. I would at least give reading the rules a go and see if you can't surprise yourself
Hi there new here, is there a specifc channel that we discuss about character creation? is it character discussion?
Yeah, but if you’re new to making characters, this would be the right channel
what if i were to say im semi new but i wanna know more posibilities?
like i know 5 levels of paladin and warlock but as im multiclassing i wanna know more indepth and what im missing out if i were not to multiclass
plus since we got 2024 phb im relearning some things
what specifically are you doing
So i want to multiclass paladin with warlock, but im having a hard time deciding when to i start to multiclass, ideally i want the pact of the blade so that i can focus on the charisma ability
realistically i could just level 1 on warlock and get that in 2024 phd, but then if i go to level 3 or 5 i would get tierslot 2 and 3 which i think i can use for divine smite?
other than that is also getting the invocation option to see darkness as im playing a drow that gets the darkness magic spell at level 5
sooooooo im trying to optimize at what point when do i multiclass to warlock and how far deep do i level warlock
i’m going to be so real with you, if you are new to dnd, don’t try to optimize
we also do have an optimization channel here however
if you want i could really take you down the lockadin optimization rabbit hole
hence why im semi new cus i played bg3 and all i did was play paladin
so i want to spice things up again, if your for real im defo down to get into the rabbit hole
just give me like 30 minutes and im all down
Howdy, how’s everyone’s night going?

Having a little hard understanding extra attack, in the book it says "You can attack twice instead of once whenever you take the Attack action on your turn".
Does this mean i attack a unit twice i.e swing my sword twice on a single target in one action point or
Does this mean i have 2 attacks, i swing once on one target and then swing again on another target?
You can split your attacks up as you like, including moving between them, but it's under the same action.
2 attacks in the same action
So you use your standard action to attack, but you can make two attack rolls. They can be against separate targets and you can move between making them, but that is your current action.
#dnd-rules can go a little more into what that means (Such as when you can take bonus actions in extra attack, or so on).
So is this different from warlock invocation thirsting blade or the same
meaning they dont stack
It works the same, but they do not stack
bruhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
hello, I am compeletly new to the dnd and was curious if someone could lend a hand with making character. I have a concept but have issues understanding stats and what can I apply
tell us about ur concept
We can certainly help out. What parts do you want help on?
basically a dragonborn druid that has a small bird companion. her backstory is in making but basically she was supposed to be in arranged marriage but she fell in love with human and in the end they ran away to live together surrounded by nature
well druids use wisdom as their spellcasting ability, so you really wanna have that stat the highest (unless you wanna make it lower due to backstory reasons)
I would like her to be more calm and less agressive if possible of course
thats great, wisdom is mostly related to patience
strength and charisma might not be the most important stats then
unless you wanna be the person that calms fights then charisma could be very helpful
I would like her to be wise most. Calming fights would be nice
I'm not sure how it works fully but I read druids can fight AND heal
and I love support characters
They certanly can
Their spell list contains healing spells, support spells, control spells, and summons 72 raptors
72???
also, I read that druids can shapeshift and I was wondering if at level 2 I can shapeshift my character into different types of dragons
like level 2 no swimming and flying for example
so I was thinking will lindwyrm be possible for example
Not dragons - but creatures/beasts of a certain challenge rating (CR)
oooooooooh
Can't have level 2 characters becoming giant monsters that early in the game 😉
You can talk to your DM but by default and in the core rules, only a beast master ranger starts off with one (it's kind of their thing).
Wizards, sorcerers, and warlocks can use a spell to summon a magical familiar.
All are limited by challenge rating as well.
Unless you get the 9th spell lv true polymorf
Ah yes... but that's certainly higher level of play!
Well, can I write in the lore that she has a small pooto birdie as a friend and if DM agrees I can bring it with me?
It can be ur familiar
the most issues I have with stats, I downloaded the dnd character sheet but I am having quite a trouble lol
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Hi
sooo 1 point is 2 score and I can distribute it how I want?
Strength is how hard you can squish a tomato
Dexterity is how easy can u dodge a tomato
Constitution is how ur body can adapt after eating a rotten tomato
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit
Wisdom is knowing a tomato can go on a Salad
Charisma is how good u can sell a fruit salad with tomato
I know that, but just the point system. If I have 27 points that means I have 54 score?
No
sorry for asking so much I am just slow with understanding
The highest an ability score can get (not including magical bonuses) is 20
Dont worry we all have been there

so I have to divide those 27 into 6 categories of my choosing?
Yes but every stats begins with 8
You have 27 points. Buying a score increase over 8 costs some of those points (see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#AbilityScorePointCosts). So the higher you want to raise a score, the more points it costs.
ooooooh
But to your original question Nish, yes you have 27 points to spend among 6 ability scores.
You can link to an image hosted on a reputable image/file sharing service and share that, yes. We'd recommend using #character-discussion for sharing and getting feedback on characters.

Welcome! Did you need help getting started?
Hello !
Hi Hi Hi
Honestly earlier i started a semi-dnd like game with my ffriends at schoool, and I'm wondering how dnd actually works ?
Is there like rules you have to follow or whut
Yeah! The pinned posts in this channel as well as #learn-to-play both have links to the 2024 Free Rules
It is a lot at first, so feel free to take your time with it. You won’t need to memorize everything, but you should be familiar with the rules regarding character creation, combat, and skill checks.
Alright, thank you for your helppppp!!!!!

Yesss
Yayyy!
Does anybody know any good dnd YouTube channels?
@limpid parrot do you have a day off
I don't know if i will ever lear6the rules of DnD i don't like reading that much 😔
I wish 😂😂 but in a month we close
Damn that's sad
There’s not a better way of learning than experiencing the thing
Yeah 😎😎 that's why i wanna start one so i can learn u know playing couple of hours after work
But i need a DM
Yeyy
My background would be the hero who’s trying to change the world lol
Could be as simple as just uding discord and a dice bot like Avrae for rolling the dice
But also there are several different Virtual table tops (VTTs), that many people use to play, like Roll20, Owlbear, or Foundry, which most let you roll dice, see maps, use tokens, make sheets, etc. for your convenience 😎
Oh it's really simple! Thank you!!!

This says they are building a giant silver dragon statue?
Yeah just some site maintenance, will probably be back online later today
Ohhh Okay thanks
Ohh ok
How long does it take to switch to a two hand bow to a one hand Rapier?
And does it take an action?
So, the answer to that depends on whether you are using the 2014 or 2024 PHB rules
Under the 2014 rules, you only get 1 object interaction per turn. Storing a weapon takes 1, and drawing a weapon also takes 1. To do 2 object interactions in the same turn, you would have to spend your action one of them. However, there is a bit of a loophole. Most people consider dropping your weapon onto the ground to not count as using your object interaction. So if you have a weapon in your hand, you can drop it on the ground for free, and then use your one object interaction to draw the new weapon
Then on your next turn if you wanted to switch back, you can simply drop the current weapon again and use your object interaction to pick up the other weapon from the ground where it was laying
Ah I switched to my bow like it was nothing because I didn't know, not like the DM cared I think, but I mainly use bow anyway so, also I said I leaned to shoot with my bow which sounds weird but
hello there im a complete newbie to dnd as a System and online ttrpg"s...but im always exited ro learn ...i have a little bit of acting Experience but this about it ...id be happy to take a small role in your epic adventure if possible 🙂

Hi guys! My name is Ellis, 28 from the UK!
I am nearly brand new to TTRPGs and I'm most keen on D&D.
I am planning to pick up the handbook next week but I'm hoping to learn the game as both a player and a DM, likely starting out as a player.
I'm UK based but I work evenings so I tend to finish around afternoon east coast time for Americans in here.
Hoping to find a friendly, inclusive group I can learn the game with.
I have some knowledge thanks to BG3, though I'm aware that doesn't translate completely over to 5e since some aspects of it differ, though I'm hoping the knowledge it gave is a good starting point.
This is an English speaking discord server. It might be easier for people to help if you could post your question in English
Who?
The post directly above mine. The link is to a Reddit post in what I assume is German
Hello! I’m Mazefire and I’m new to DND. I’ve been keen to play it because you can use your custom characters for it and that with homebrew you can use any character you want. And that you can roleplay in Dungeons and Dragons too. And probably because my father played it before I was born. So I must’ve gotten this interest from him.
I was wondering if anyone can guide me to character creation and the rules of playing dnd as well as getting creativity for my stories for each dnd game since I’m running low on originality because a lot of things have been done before.

hi guys! so i'm recently new to d&d, i have already put in quite a bit of work into my world and npcs. i have purchased all the main books as well as a couple extra ones and a starter campaign. i wanted a bit more variety in races and classes as well changing npcs around, etc.. so i'm using the starter guide as a tool along with some of the dungeons but building around it. is there anyone online that could potentially anwser some questions i have about rounding out some ideas in the world, npcs, encounteres and combat?
If you'd like to brainstorm about your world, and its lore and features and such, then you can post about it in #dm-world-building
If you'd like to discuss the process of being a DM, and get advice about how to run the game, then you can post about it in #dm-discussion
The people there will be happy to help you out.
ok thank you!
ok can anyone help with understanding rolling to hit? and where i'm getting profeciency bonus as well as abililty bonus? i thought they were the same thing :/
?tag new proficiency
Proficiency
All creatures have a Proficiency Bonus, which reflects the impact their training has on the creature’s capabilities. The Proficiency Bonus table shows your Proficiency Bonus, which is +2 for a level 1 character.
This bonus is applied to a D20 Test when the creature has proficiency in a skill, in a saving throw, or with an item that the creature uses to make the D20 Test. The bonus is also used for spell attacks and for calculating the DC of saving throws for spells.
Your Proficiency Bonus can’t be added to a die roll or another number more than once. Occasionally, a Proficiency Bonus might be multiplied or divided (doubled or halved, for example) before being added.
So, these two bot posts go into more detail, but in very simple terms:
Your "Ability Score Modifier" is the modifier that corresponds to whatever you ability score is for a given ability. So if your Strength Score is 15, for example, then your Strength Modifier is +2. You can use the table to look up what modifier corresponds to each ability score
Your "Proficiency Bonus" is a number that goes up as you level up, which represents how skilled you are at certain specific things. If you are trained in using a specific skill, or using a specific weapon, then you are "proficient" with it, and you can add your "proficiency bonus" to those checks

spellcasters do not add their profeciency bonus on an attack roll? just their spell casting modifier correct?
Spellcasters add their PB to an attack roll, but not and to their save DC. (misremembered the math)
They add the ability score modifier to both.
Spellcasters are considered to be proficient with their spells, and they do add their PB to their spell attack rolls and spell save DC
I'm curious on how combat works (im a dm and I need help dming how a monster would play
Rolling to hit happens any time you make an attack roll. You roll a d20, add any applicable bonuses/penalties, then compare the total to the target's Armor Class (AC).
If your total equals or exceeds their AC, that's a hit, and you roll for damage.
Anything less and you miss.
The higher a target's AC, the harder they are to hit.
ok i think i'm getting it! i know all the information it just wasnt clicking but i can feel its close lol there's just so much to know. you guys are being very helpful
There's a lot to explain about combat, so it would be much easier for us to help you if you asked specific questions, but to get you started, here is a link to the chapter on combat in the Free Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/phb-2024/playing-the-game#Combat
so if i'm lvl 1 spell caster with a charisma of 15, i roll a d20. i roll an 11. i add +2 from PB and +2 from charisma modifier
correct, assuming the type of spellcaster you are uses Charisma. That is determined by what class you are playing
believe it or not, i have the rules in front of me. it just confuses me when i try to imagine it in practice
When combat breaks out, the DM asks everyone to roll initiative.
- Each player rolls a d20 and add their character's dexterity modifier (and any bonuses that apply) and report what they rolled to the DM.
- The DM rolls initiative for the monsters
- The DM then adds them to initiative list and sorts by highest initiative to lowest.
- The DM will use this to figure out who goes when (this is an abstraction for game reasons - everything is happening all at once but for game reasons we need to track and manage it all).
- On a character/creatures turn they can move, take an action, take a bonus action (if they have any) and all that.
- To make an attack, the character/creature rolls a d20 and adds any proficiency bonuses, any modifiers that apply, and any other bonuses that apply on their attack roll.
- If the attack meets (equals) or beats the target's Armor Class, it hits.
- They then can roll their damage dice and that is deducted from the target's Hit Point pool.
Yep! Then you'd tell your DM you rolled a 15. If your target's AC is 15 or less, then you've hit, and they'll ask you to roll for damage.
can a rogue use their dexterity modifier, their sleight of hand skill and PB on a lockpick to a chest?
or am i just using the Dex mod and sleight of hand skill thats +2
Proficiency in a skill is what lets you add your Proficiency Bonus to ability checks using that skill.
oh ok, so i would allow them all 3 bonuses to that roll
There's only two bonuses.
A Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check adds:
- Your Dexterity modifier (because it's a Dexterity check)
- Your Proficiency Bonus if (and only if) you're proficient with the Sleight of Hand skill.
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
If you're not proficient with Sleight of Hand, you'd add only your Dexterity modifier.
oh ok sick
sorry for all these very similar questions, i am very new and i have only played once
All good. That's what this channel's here for!
i've also played bg3 lol but i'm trying to let that not get in the way, i know 5e has a quite a few differences
We've all been there at some point or another.
okay one more question about PB.. when making a character, you pick your class you get a choice of 2 skill proficiencies, then you also get your background proficiencies, and those can stack?
how do i do rolled damage for monsters
Next to the monster's attack features it will show the average damage or dice rolled damage. Use that.
New here, how do I go about creating a character? New to discord as well.

so how do i know it hits
Each attack a monster has will tell you the amount of damage it does. It will give you an average, and the dice to roll, and you can pick whether to use the average or roll. So if an attack says it does 8 (1d10+3) damage, then you can choose to either do exactly 8 damage, or roll a d10 and add 3
You can't add your proficiency bonus to a roll more than once, so choosing the same proficiency two times won't do anything for you.
On the creature's turn, it rolls a d20 + any modifiers/bonuses. If it meets or beats the target's Armor Class it hits. Just like PCs.
ah okay
but what if my lvl 1 rogue chooses to take a proficiency in sleight of hand and his background also gives a proficiency in sleight of hand? wouldn't it be +4 to the roll of any sleight of hand check
No, because you can't add your Proficiency Bonus to a roll more than once.
Your Proficiency Bonus can’t be added to a die roll or another number more than once. For example, if a rule allows you to make a Charisma (Deception or Persuasion) check, you add your Proficiency Bonus if you’re proficient in either skill, but you don’t add it twice if you’re proficient in both skills.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#Proficiency
ok ok i see..... i think i was doing bg3 math
Here is an example:
Scimitar. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) slashing damage
The "+5 to hit" section tells you that you roll a d20 and add 5.
Compare that total to the target's AC. If it is equal to or greater than their AC, then the attack will hit
"Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) slashing damage" tells you that if the attack hits, it will deal 5 slashing damage, or you can roll 1d6 and add 2
Rogues specifically get an ability which can double their proficiency bonus for certain skills. It’s called “expertise” and you get this just by being a rogue, not because you have proficiency in something twice
is aan ac of 15 normal for a character thats level 14
not 15
It depends on what class they are playing but that sounds generally a little low.
They may need to equip any armor they have
Click the checkbox next to their armor to equip it
can they do that from just dnd beyond
Yes
his armor made it go up by 2
Should I give them some unique armor or smth
No - stay with the starting equipment for now
Get to grips with the basic core game rules and mechanics
I mean, I'm the dm for a one shot and my players are level 14
... welp you're in for some fun chaos! lol
I don't think they're getting through the tomb of horrors
Tomb tests the players more than the characters.
Lots of the old-school adventures are like that.

i'm running my first D&D campaign and am planning on doing a session 0 this saturday. 5 people will be in the party and I only have on players handbook. Whats the way that you guys have done it in the past? Should i have everyone look through the classes one at a time? Should i send a brief overview of the classes before and then have them go over the book when they get to my place? Whats the best strategy here
no, in person
so my dm said that we got to choose a magical item to get from a chest, what do yall think would be an appropriate item for a level 2 character whos a pirate
I used a checklist for my group for session 0 and everything is going fantastic so far
hey. After much consideration (and after purchasing the PM 2024 elsewhere) I decided to go ahead and purchase the digitial version for my D&D beyond account.
however, 30 minutes later and it doesnt appear to be available to me in character creation. I still only have the legacy core options.
Is there something specific I need to do? Does it take time to register?
Decanter of Endless Water?
I would but one of my party members is making a character based off of bending in avatar and I don’t want to end up with two of the same item or to have to think of a new one
Staff of Birdcalls get yourself a bird pet 😄 use it to call the bird back to you
that would be good as hell if I wasn’t an artificer, I’m gonna build myself a polly so thatd be a bit redundant
For artificer's all purpose tools are always handy
You might try checking if your entitlements are in sync. 👇
?tag ddb entitlements
Account Entitlements
Account entitlements are how D&D Beyond identifies which content you can access. These are synced automatically in time, but if you're not seeing content you should have access to, visit Account > Licenses.
The Account Entitlements section at the top should ideally say "Your entitlements data is in sync!" If not, it will show a button to manually trigger the sync, after which your content should be available.
If that doesn’t do it, I’d suggest asking for help in #ddb-support.
Can someone explain me how I search for a group who wants another player?
I was looking in the channel #find-a-game but I didnt understood that...
Pole of Angling would also be a good option for just roleplaying for fishing
thatd be good but I’m pretty sure my character is gonna be more scoundrel than sailor
rope of mending to tie people up?
This worked. Thank you.
that could work but my dm did say that he intends for the items to level up with us throughout the story
I’m not sure if the rope of mending could evolve in any way
oh that changes things drat I got nothing besides making something homebrewery
For my campaign I have an adventures guild tattoo that levels up every time my players gain a level and there is 7 buffs you can choose between each level. Its branded on the player. I dont know your dms insanity level so I cant help you there. I am a very insane DM 😛

Good day everybody. I have very little experience in tabletop DnD, but it has been on my bucket list for about 15 years. My interest for DnD was reignited with Baldur's Gate 3, and would like to join any beginner campaign! I can create in depth characters, and have a good base for combat, but my RPing ability isnt a strong point. Thanks for taking a sec to read, and for any feedback you all have!

Hey! This is my first time doing dnd, I am getting a players handbook Friday and I will hopefully be getting a job so I can probably get a book or two, I would like to know. What do I need from the players handbook that I can learn, that I need to be able to play dnd.
Draug role playing is the easy part for me, what you got to do is put yourself in your characters shoes and there you go! But I know how it can be a bit difficult or embarrassing but hey, dnd is pretty much a tabletop rp game so.
Welcome! I'd recommend taking a look at #learn-to-play first off.
Then as far as learning D&D, start with how to make a character sheet and learning what your character features are and what they do. As for core game rules, learn about d20 tests (used for skill checks, attack rolls, and saving throws) and the different dice. Then a lot of the rest is handled by learning as you play (although you can also check YouTube/Twitch streams for D&D games and see others playing the game - do note they are usually doing it for entertainment purposes first, not teaching!).
?tag new d20
D20 Tests
When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses a d20 roll to determine success or failure. These rolls are called D20 Tests, and they come in three kinds:
- An ability check represents a creature using talent and training to try to overcome a challenge, such as forcing open a stuck door, picking a lock, entertaining a crowd, or deciphering a cipher.
- A saving throw—also called a save—represents an attempt to evade or resist a threat, such as a fiery explosion, a blast of poisonous gas, or a spell trying to invade your mind.
- An attack roll determines whether an attack hits a target.
Y'all is it normal to be so anxious to dm, like to the point you want to throw up
Anxiety is a normal emotion. But to that degree I would say it’s out of the ordinary.
As this is just a game, you should not be making yourself sick under any circumstances.
If I may offer a solution, I would identify the specific parts of DMing that are giving you the most stress and either cut back on them in the game, or research better ways to prepare those specific aspects.
As an example, I am not very good at writing compelling naratives and plots. To help with this I read a lot of prewritten adventures from the DMs Guild and steal all the ideas
So I'm overly stressing myself for something that doesn't need it?
Your body reacting violently to somehow "failing" to play the game is very much an overreaction
Try and find ways to mitigate that reaction if you can do so in a healthy and easy way. Otherwise, maybe DMing just isn't your thing (and that is totally ok)
I also am starting to think I have a stomach bug, so it may not be from stress
Let's say I want to create a character who's main gimmick is manipulating magnetic forces, what class should I pick?
graviturgy wizard
that’s a cr thing though
Cr?
it’s from a book made by critical role
from the explorers guide to wildemounte iirc
so it’s technically official content

I have a question how do u get r20 to work we tried yesterday me and some other people from here but we didn't know whet we were doing 😅
Wait there’s a website full of free dnd campaigns lmao- I guess I should still get the starter set to learn
Decided to move to here cuz there’s a current convo in genera
Might gwt more help asking in #third-party
But also first question, were you using mobile, because roll20 doesnt really work well with it lol
Beyond is generally pretty beginner friendly, at least for the character creation
I know that i hav6a character the problem is the "board" ? Idk how to explain it like where we would play
I think Beyond recently added that, though Im not sure as I dont use it
I oersonally use roll20, as its free and lets me do things how I like. It lets me have a board with grid, and relatively easily add my maps and make monsters, etc, though I can also understand it being a bit complicated at first
Wanna dm on my group 😂 the dm we have doesn't mind being a player since we are all brand new
If you're looking for a DM or a game, check out instructions over on #find-a-game

Hello

Ah alr ty
Hi can anyone tell me how XP works? i bought Dragons of Stormwreck Isle starter-set today and I've read most of it but I don't know how XP works in the game
Basically in 2014, monsters have in their stat blocks how much xp they give when defeated. You divide the xp between each party member, and when they gain enough xp to reach a certain level, they level up!
Some adventures also give xp for other things, such as avoiding traps, and that will be mentioned in them when that happens

and how do I know the amount of xp I gained?
There is a number in the monster stat block, looking something like this: Challenge 3 (700 xp) for owlbear.
In this case you gain the 700 xp as a party when you kill or otherwise deal with the monster, and it is split between each member, so a party of four would gain 175 xp each (700 divided by 4)
The DM will tell you how much xp you get, as presumably as a player you wouldn't be looking at the stat blocks 😉
thank very much 😁
Anytime! 👍
Is it worth it to just multi class 2 levels of warlock from a level 5 paladin, just to get, eldritch blast, agonizing, pact of the blade, dark vision?
I got level 15 str so i can wear plate armor but after that if i multi class i figured i could just dump the next points into con and char
Depends on what you’re wanting out of it. I personally dislike it for thematic/flavor reasons under most circumstances.
Ah
Honestly so that i have more damage with spells
Plus a pretty decent range option with eldritch blast
Also also im a drow so i have darkness spell
So with dark vision i can blind enemies and hit them either from range or upclose
Plus i figured its also nice to have 2 spell slots that i can just reset from short rest
i personally dont like multiclassing
Yes but but but do you think this benefits is werf
Im just stuck on feeling like it would be nice to hit range targets, while also having darkness spell to blind when closeby
Generally yeah in 2014, 1 or 2 levels of warlock in paladin are great
But for 2024?
For me, it depends on the multiclass combo. But Pallock is one I don't care for.
I still think it'd be worth it. The main upside of the warlock dip in 2014 was getting access to eldritch agonizing repelling blast spam and charisma weapon attacks and you still get that from a dip
And you can get these at level 2 now
Im just afraid im losing out potential from paladin
Or slowing down my progress as a paladin
Also that means i should dump my stats to cha
Normally people do like 1 level at level 2 or 3 and then another warlock level after u get your aura or subclass aura
Delaying aura by 1 level feels bad but the only level where I'd say you'd be weaker than pure paladin is at exactly level 6
whats a good rogue multiclass combo?
I see thanks for the advice
In 2014 3 or 4 levels in assassin rogue can be good on gloomstalker
ohh
assasin sounds interesting
It's a lot weaker in 2024 because of surprise nerfs
Hey folks - let’s take the character build chatter to #character-discussion
mb vroski
Good day to all, I have a question, because this is my first time on a foreign DND server, so there may be some rules and regulations here. If you send information about yourself to the master, is it really scary if they don't answer you? I'm just afraid that I'm doing something wrong because not a single master has answered me on campaigns by voice. Or is that how it's done? It's just that on the servers where I'm usually from my area, if they don't take you, they at least write to you that you're not suitable and all that.
It depends on how long its been since you messaged them. This server has people from all over the world, so each person's time zone may be very different from yours. Plus, not everyone is active all the time. So if you've sent a message and its only been a couple hours, they just might not have seen it yet. It may take a few days to get a reply sometimes
I usually write what is asked in the recruitment post. Name, how old I am, what experience I have, I don't write huge paragraphs My play style and all. I'm polite, of course, I'm just a little socially awkward so I'm very worried T^T
It’s been days. I understand the time zones and all:D
It’s possible they get so many messages that it’s not feasible to answer them all
It’s a big server
That’s understandable.
If you're posting this in this server, it is actually against server rules to post identifying information like your real name and age, so its possible your messages are being deleted by moderators
I'm just worried that I'm doing something wrong because it's already happened to several people. I'm looking for a group for myself on Strad and probably since it's a very popular campaign, many people write to the masters. I wouldn't even mind joining the ongoing campaign.
No, only in personal messages.
Oh, if you tell people you're specifically looking for Curse of Strahd, that may be why you're getting no responses. Unless a DM specifically says that they plan on running that adventure, you can most likely assume they are running something of their own creation, rather than a pre-published one. I'm not sure why no one has messaged you back to say this, but if you say "Hi, I'd like to join your campaign but please run this specific adventure" then the answer would probably be no
Usually DMs post in #looking-for-players because they already have a campaign they'd like to run. Their post should give you some idea of what that campaign is.
If you want to join a specific campaign, you may need to look specifically for DMs who are already running that campaign.
Or consider hiring a paid DM; they'd surely run whatever you like.
Man its hard to find a campaign you can join
There is always something that doesnt let me join
Yeah, it's hard no matter how long you've been playing.
oh, no no, i specifically write to DMs whos planning to run Cure of Strahd
I see. Well, I'm not sure what the issue would be then
I mean 80% of the campaigns are 18+ and overlapping with that is timezone problems
I got a traders clock set to be able to compare timezones fast
Yeah, the more specific your needs, the harder it'll be to find one that fits those needs.
if you don't mind paying on StartPlaying there are usually a few DM's who run Curse of Strahd
So how do you get into this? I mean like how do I learn how to play

Hello, any Italian here?
Hey new dm here but I was wondering if my players do a check on there turn. Does that count as an action?
It depends. There are actions the player can take if they want to make an ability check to get a certain result. Those actions are Search, Study, Influence, and Hide.
But if the DM asks the player to make an ability check for something, then that doesn't cost their action.
Hi
So if they have two attacks per turn, the want to do a perception Check, do they still have another action to attack and or do another check?
Depends on what's giving them two attacks on their turn.
When you're engaging in two weapon fighting, you can only swing the second weapon if you used your action to take the attack action with the first weapon.
So they can only do 1 check on their turn and no attack then
So no, their action would have been used to take the Search action (for example), and then couldn't make another attack with the other weapon
Okay thank you!
If they want to do a perception check to look for something, that requires them to use the Search action. You only have 1 action per turn, so you cannot do the Search action and the Attack action at the same time
Also if a creature grapples a target, can the grappled target still make a reaction?
Depends on what that reaction is, but the grappled condition does not inherently prevent creatures from taking reactions
Would a monks deflect damage work?
The Grappled condition doesn't prevent that.
Good morning yall
Im playing my first game today as a brand new player, does anyone mind telling me what I should focus on as quick prep for the game? I wanna make it easier on the dm (just saw the links, my bad)
As long as you understand what you're capable of doing on your turn in combat, what ability checks are, and you've got your character sheet all set up, you've got 90% of everything you'll need.
So make a character sheet and study combat rules, thats simple and understandable thank you
What DOSH said pretty much covers it.. having a basic grasp on what your character can do in a turn is always helpful - people don't mind a bit of waiting vut someone spending ten minutes trying to decide what spell to cast or whether they can rage or not, can get a bit tedious.
Know what dice you might need (if rolling physical dice) and have them with you. Being on time and ready to play is huge
Is it okay if I only have one of each type of die? And Absolutely, Im definitely going to try to just learn through playing and not spend so much time deciding things
Thank you very much
totally ok to only have one of each. you can roll them over again if you need multiple like 2d6. that is very common
A thing I don't recommend as often anymore given the rise of online play, but if you're playing a spellcaster then I endorse taking a bunch of index cards and writing your spell descriptions out onto them by hand. Helps you to internalize what the mechanics are for each spell.
If your handwriting is sufficiently small/neat, you can maybe use a half an index card. If it's like mine, you want one card per spell.
Youd be surpised how confused I get trying to read spell effects from dnds website, so this tip definitely still works - I hear sometimes you may consider a new way to use a spell based on the wording and mechanics being used
