Don't worry about timezones per se but focus on "am I available to play at that time?"
Because there are plenty of D&D games where there's players playing from all over the world because their schedules align, not because of the timezone.
Also there are Play By Post games (text-run D&D) which are much less time sensitive
Yh that’s the think it works out like 2am 😅 still looking been going all day to find someone to play with but there are so many people
Hey is there any DND groups needing new players?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Thank you dyno
Read #find-a-game for useful info and instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels
You can submit your own post in #looking-for-dm, or reply directly to DMs’ posts in #looking-for-players.
That what I have been doing 🙂 and also I posted a looking for dm post
Start by typing /looking-for
Wait for Discord to show you some options - select dm to post in #looking-for-dm
Then fill out the form the bot gives you and when you submit it, the bot will create the post in the channel and attach a thread to it that you can use to communicate with interested folks and add any corrections/updates.
How problematic is sunlight sensitivity for a player?
Unless you're in broad daylight searching for something it ain't really an issue.
Depending on the campaign it can be either a major problem or none at all. Venturing across The Sword Coast, fighting in open fields and getting ambushed on the tradeways are all in broad sunlight, so a campaign set there would be a major problem.
Venturing through the Underdark in Out of the Abyss, not so much.
Just be a warlock with devil sight and cast darkness to solve the sunlight problem if it's really an issue
So instead of Disadvantages you'd have advantage on attack rolls.
Besides the hastle of having to burn spell slots and dedicate your first round every combat outdoors to setting up an umbrella for yourself, the attack rolls would actually be straight rolls. This is because the target of your attacks is still in sunlight, which will inflict disadvantage on your attack rolls. In this situation you would be an unseen attacker however, so it would only be a straight roll rather than disadvantage.
Its warlock spells slots are always an issue that's why you regain them from a short rest and to be fair their probably a drow elf.
Better straight rolls than to roll with disadvantages and the darkness is 15ft sphere so if the target enters the darkness or you cast it while you're both there then you should have advantage.
I never said this was a permanent solution but it's just another way to lessening the effects of sunlight sensitivity
Im sorry, I dont think I'll ever be convinced that have to spend your first round of combat any time you're outdoors to set up a second level concentration spell, just to make your attack rolls flat (unless the hostile walks into the orb of darkness), is an effective strategy
You can just wear a helmet
You can cast it on the target if it's near you
Then they step out of the spell and its truely a completely wasted slot and action
Or wear full clothes
But it's a good thing because then they still have disadvantages against attacks made against you
It also gives disadvantage if your opponent is in bright light anyway
And they will rely in range instead of melee

helloo im v new to dnd and trying to learn everything before i try playing a game 😭 i've seen a bunch of people mention 3.5 and 5e games? what are those/what do they mean?
Those are editions of the game
Currently, most people play 5e which came out in 2014. There's currently a refresh being published that is adding and updating content to the version.
So you might see 5e 2014 or 5e 2024
specifically 3.5 is a more wargaming focussed edition of the game wheras 5e is more streamlined for a modern roleplay-focussed audience
Hay I'm thunder I'm brand new I played part a campaign before everyone went there separate ways I just wanna learn how to play and see what dnd is all about

Hey there im brand new and starting a campaign ran by mu experienced friend shortly but im unsure where to even start when it comes to character creation, all i know currently is that i think i want to be a triton as a race were using 5e i think
I'm new to d&d and I have a very noob question, what's Homebrew?
rules you make up or something not core gameplay
like a statblock for Clifford the Big Red Dog or something
thanks
Hey! First time here. I hope we all get along as well as a party of fireball casting, pearl of power boosted, rule abusing wizards!
I’m right ahead of ya 👍💀!!
HAHA YOUR AWESOME😭💀😂
And make sure to use mage hand to squeeze just a tad bit to hard on a BBEG's arteries
HELL YEAH💀
What classes do you like to play the most? in descending order, if you please
Wizard as you can tell and also Barbarians
But wizard is best
Do you play Bard in the tiniest bit?
I’ve played bard before and I thought it was pretty good but usually isn’t my first pick
Well, vicious mockery can hit (and crit every time if you're creative enough. To give an example "Is that your face, or did your neck throw up?"
Ha
There's more where that came from on "Oneshotquester's" youtube channel
Ya
I like how it states 2-3 Business days as well, like "Ya, you'll start to die on the day you're meant to have your first day of kindergarten, but, because I'm nice, I'll let you make friends to traumatize"
Haha fr💀😂
No I don’t
Because mine is literally my pfp in a every day wizard costume💀
Lol
Either way I gtg see y’all wizards bards goblins and other mysteriously terrifying creatures
Speaking of terrifying creatures, let's talk about the tarasque (Is that how you spell it?)
Idk
Anyways, the most terrifying thing about that creature is the fact that it has spikes on it's back
WAIT!
Ya
I'm not talking about the aesthetic of said spikes, but the implication
Yeah makes sense
In nature, animals evolves to have spikes on their back to ward off predators that would constantly try to eat or swallow them. So, if the Tarasque evolved to have spiked back amour, then what does it consider a predator, let alone one that would try to eat, or more horrifyingly, swallow it whole throughout multiple generations?
Now you may sleep
No worries, and make sure to send that true top of the food chain monster to any parties you think need to be put in their place
Gn, sweet dreams
You too 💀😂
Anyways, I best not keep you any longer
Yep gnnnnn
May your dreams be of the perfect campaign
HA they will😭😂
Well then, best not keep them waiting weary traveler
The next day Yo, Shouldn't you have been sleeping like, last night You proceed to fall asleep on your device as your fatiuge finally catches up to you
Ha nice👌💀😂
Hello hello
I think I may have enough to get started a 30 gallon tote full of stuff for various ttrpgs plus a set of dice in my pocket
Hey guys How do you make a post in the looking for dm chat
Hello
Hello! #find-a-game has the instructions you are looking for I think
Appreciate it
wildshape has a time limit tho
Ah thus the wildshape hack falls apart at the first hurdle
also, even if you could
It wouldn't necessarily mean it makes 'clones' of you with your druid powers. It'd just make more aphids.
Is this a place I can ask for advice for my homebrew
Ok, thank you
Hello
DnD, man I miss my old DnD campaign
Hello 👋
Hi
Some ppl on some servers are rude
Hmmm
I played dnd once in highschool
Oh wait, you once did?
Yeah
How it went? Is it goofy?
Cuz, mine is, idk how but we just slapped some homebrew magic and hope for the best💀
It was alright, not goofy at all it was all serious
Holy, but might I get a sneak of peak? Like some quote of the campaign? If you still remember of course
Cuz mine is, pretty much...a cluster mess of idk to put it
It was a cluster too but, overtime as I got older I realized I enjoy doing rp
Damn, you are lucky cuz..
Oh yeah I remember, the party consisting of....
Ranger that never use his long range weapon and always use a bayonet.
A mage that is to be simply put...a glass cannon.
The elf cleric that...cough poor npc that need to handle my character.
The twin mercenary that get into the mess
To be put, my character is the ranger, but he never use his long range weapon and always go into bayonet charge, while the Mage is infact a glass cannon but somehow...the DM know how to materialized ambush
I'm still trying to understand dnd over time I've always made up my own rps and adventures
FYI this is the channel for getting help with the basics
If anyone has any questions or needs point to rules and such ask away
But, can we do a goofy rambling eh?
Man...tbh I'm jealous about how everyone can write their character out of thin air
You can certainly try but mods may delete to keep the channels tidy
Well my character says it all by my username
So, there no channel to uhhh, do a conversation?
If you are planning to dm something with that theme perhaps #dm-world-building or #homebrew if it will include homebrewed mechanics classes and such.
Oh wait...your character is a demon queen?
Would like it to be
There's literally a character that is half human half spider... I think you can do it... I believe in you!!!
Thank you!!!
All channels can have conversations as long as they are on topic for the channel they are in.
Not talking about d&d but catching up with a new friend or talking about a ahow? Likely #non-dnd-topics
Curious about how a rule works in practice and working it out #dnd-rules
People have generic discussions about d&d all the time in #dnd-discussion
I hate spiders but I'll be up for it 😆
: D
Still trying to get the hang of doing dnd. I've normally just made up my own adventures and characters just by roleplaying over texts with friends
Me too~
:3
Is DND like the same? The way I see my character to be is Lucifers daughter and next in line to be the ruler
With the right DM they totally can be just that
if you are okay with your character starting out not being more powerful than some random who decided to become an adventurer, then thats okay. just be vary of main character syndrom
I'm okay with that
Easy: someone gave her a curse/poison to bump her off and usurp the throne. She survived, but needs to regain her strength before she can get her revenge.
I like that idea
Sooo is there a chat I can go to start my story? I'm new to DND
You can use #character-discussion to help create your character but we don't run games/RP channels here
Finding games is what #looking-for-players and the similar channels are for
Alright folks, be honest here.
What you guys choose? Charge the enemy with a bayonet or be a long range guy?
Both. I have too many characters 😅
I have played both. I dont think I have a huge preference
how i make a character sheet
You can create one digitally on a site like D&D Beyond:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
thanks
Or you can print out a paper sheet to fill out by hand:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/downloads/2024-character-sheet.pdf
Chapter 2 in the Free Rules walks through all the steps, but we’re happy to help if you have any questions along the way!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
how high should i put my points for stats
first you (or your DM) choses a stat generation method. Then you assign your 6 stats based on your classes needs and what you want your character to be good at
for beginners, I recommend just using the Standard Array for now
Like Ratatoskr, for me it totally depends on the character. some of them will do one; some will do the other.
thanks
Let's start with the fiction of the character. Don't worry about mechanics yet - describe them for me/us. You get 2-3 simple sentences.
Morning everyone
Well, I'm a stupid and reckless person so might as well use a ranger that have crack shot accuracy but used that person in close combat quarter.
(Spoiler, it went bad)
A Ranger fight in melee💀
Hello I'm new
What class did you pick?
Welcome!
Fighter
You probably want Str, Dex, and Con as your top three, then.
Did you have a specific kind of weapon in mind?
2 Battle axes
You'll want a high Str for melee weapons, so I'd put that first.
Then Con and Dex in whichever order you prefer.
Con will help your max HP.
Dex will help your AC, but can be offset by using medium or heavy armor.
Dex also helps with ranged weapons like bows.
There's a suggested Standard Array assignment here, which you can use as-is or change as you like:
?tag new fighter
Fighter
Master all weapons and armor
Fighters rule many battlefields. Questing knights, royal champions, elite soldiers, and hardened mercenaries—as Fighters, they all share an unparalleled prowess with weapons and armor. And they are well acquainted with death, both meting it out and defying it.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 15
Dex. 14
Con. 13
Int. 8
Wis. 10
Cha. 12
Likes: Weapons
Complexity: Low
Starting HP: 10 + Con. modifier
Rolling is the only way to get a 16.
The highest you can get with Standard Array or Point Cost is 15.
Do you have a DM already? What method did they say to use for this?
i don't have a dm
I'd recommend sticking with Standard Array or Point Cost, then, both described here:
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
I will point out that 2 battle axes is going to require a feat maybe 2 to make work as battle axe doesn’t have the light property
ill just use this
one then
You could start with two handaxes.
ill do that then
I'd also recommend the Two-Weapon Fighting fighting style in that case.
With that setup, whenever you take the Attack action to hit with one handaxe, you can take a Bonus Action to attack with the other.
Handaxes can also be thrown, so you might want to stock up on a couple extras for when you need just a little more reach.
In the bot output, are the STR and DEX scores in bold because proficient saves?
No tag Paladin found in category new.
No, it's meant to reflect the "Primary Ability" listed in this table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#ClassOverview
This works for me. No idea why it didn't work here... 🧐
?tag new paladin
Paladin
Smite foes and shield allies with divine and martial might
Paladins are united by their oaths to stand against the forces of annihilation and corruption. Whether sworn before a god’s altar, in a sacred glade before nature spirits, or in a moment of desperation and grief with the dead as the only witnesses, a Paladin’s oath is a powerful bond. It is a source of power that turns a devout warrior into a blessed champion.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 15
Dex. 10
Con. 13
Int. 8
Wis. 12
Cha. 14
Likes: Defense
Complexity: Average
Starting HP: 10 + Con. modifier
Underlined that time.
Yeah, intentional there.
Fighter is an odd case because it's the only one with an "or".
-# Could it be the capital P?
So theirs omits the underline because it's still important but not as strictly important.
Hello there, I'm new here, I'm looking to start DM'ing for my friends. However I have barely played DnD myself but watched a bit and already now a lot of the rules. I bought the essentials kit which includes the rulebook and "dragon of icespire peak".
Do you think just reading these will be enough? Or do you guys have any other sources that you recommend to look at before starting
The rules are key, but I definitely didn't feel like I knew enough to run with those and an adventure on their own.
Two resources I think help a ton are this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). Those should help get you started. There are a bunch of other resources as you encounter new challenges as well.
Alright, thank you so much! Will check them out!
I will be DMing for someone that does this a lot and even makes youtube videos, so want to be as prepared as possible. I have like 2-3 months
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me find an application I've seen used. People put a flatscreen on the table ans stream from the laptop, and the program is like a digital mapmaker you can move people around in, even hide things in darkness, add things like torches etc. Like an interactive layout.
Likely a Virtual Table Top program (VTT). Common ones are Roll 20, Owlbear Rodeo, and Foundry.
DOSH is correct. If you'd like to get more information, or get help using such a program, you can discuss VTTs in #third-party
Hi, I just got into DnD day before, so is there like someplace where I can find the basic rules?

Over here, you're more likely to get advice on basic questions, like how ability scores work or what actions do.
Will do thankyou!
read through the first source and watching the series. The guy gives a nice, simple straightforward explanation and overview. Goes a bit fast, but just the way i like it
Idk, 13 con seems kinda sketchy
Sounds correct to me. It'll likely increase after ability score modifiers.
These suggested stats are made using Standard Array rather than point buy, so either Con or Cha had to be a 13. They couldn't both be 14. But remember, these are before your bonuses from your Background
Makes sense
Those suggested assignments also came directly from the Free Rules.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#StandardArraybyClass
In fact, everything there is just copied from various parts of chapters 2 and 3.
hello. Can't actually find anything even in google:
What are the equipment pieces in dnd?
So I get weapon / armor / shield part.
But then there are boots, helms, capes, rings? Am I missing something? I guess so. Coming from countless RPG games... are there any other equipment pieces?
Or in PC RPG language: What are the equipment slots in dnd?
There aren't really "slots".
Use common sense to determine whether more than one of a given kind of magic item can be worn. A character can't normally wear more than one pair of footwear, one pair of gloves or gauntlets, one pair of bracers, one suit of armor, one item of headwear, and one cloak. You can make exceptions; a character might be able to wear a circlet under a helmet, for example, or to layer two cloaks.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/magic-items#MultipleItemsoftheSameKind
Besides obvious things like only wearing one helmet at a time, there isn't really any slots so you could wear as many rings as you find for example or a couple of necklaces or charms
Of course, this is the DM's common sense it's referring to.
Don't roll up to your table as a player and try to argue "but it seems like common sense to me!"
oh, yeah, that makes sense. Ofc. But let's say: Some known oldschool mmorpg I played a lot had 3 compartments for the head part of characters. Basically one could wear some sort of helmet + glasses + mask. Can one do something like that in dnd? I mean mechanically it kind of makes sense
And I am no magical item freak, thisi s the general question for simply my understanding of how things work
That'd be up to the DM if you could say stack a helmet with a mask
The only quote that addresses your question is the one shared above.
Beyond that, you'd simply have to discuss with your DM.
The only thing that you are limited on besides what spamandtuna mentioned is you can only be attuned to 3 items at a time but that's a different thing
I am DM... so yeah 🙂 It's simply good to know
Then yeah, if helmet + glasses + mask makes sense for you, then there's no issue.
Those can all be worn together as long as you say they can.
nono, this is a common knowledge and I know that far. But as I've said there were not much info about "equippable slots" anywhere
Which is more of a balance choice lol
yeah, now I get that. You can simply find a magic scarf somewhere and well, if the hero has a neck, one can equip it, got it 🙂 Sounds great
Correct and since in gameplay it's just a scarf, you can stack it with armor and necklaces and other things
Presumably, yeah
yeah, got it. So this part in the game basically has no limits apart ones mentioned. 1 helm, 1 armor, 1 boots etc. Makes total sense now, thank you!
Can you stack it with four other scarfs? With 10? Eventually, every DM is going to decide there's a practical limit, but that limit may vary slightly from table to table.
oh yeah... nanah, this is also clear that there must be some sort of limit. And well, basically should be regulated by common sense )
maybe I should make some note for myself for some boss fight, where there's some Nothic with 20 rings equipped and as party damages him rings fall down and as he's defeated, all rings but few are destroyed 🙂
hello im a complete beginner and would like to try out my first session of dnd

Do players need to seek out components for a component pouch during the campaign?
normally not, a standard component pouch is assumed to hold all the necessary common spell components
of course, if your DM wants components to matter more to your game, they might decide otherwise
alright, thanks
I will try to remember, but I'm in positon to be the one to invoke it so rarely I'm probably going to always screw it up thanks to the things that legit are ?tag new -argument
So, I lost my first character a couple of months ago. And I did a introspective, I was okay with losing my character, but when I told others how I lost my character alot of them thought it was BS and my DM (my cousin) was a bad DM.
All in all what happened was. I used magic to break a lock on a sealed wardrobe. There was a bag inside. My character opened it and since he's a warlock failed the strength saves and died. It was a bag of devouring. My cousin tried to say "Well it was a bag in a sealed wardrobe why would you open it?"
One if it's a bag of devouring why is it in the cult leaders Main bed chamber and locked in a wardrobe? For clothes? And not in a chest or someplace more secure? I broke the lock pretty easily too.
All in all my cousin told me later he rolled randomly for the loot in the wardrobe and it happened to be a bag of devouring. So he didn't actually intend for my character to die. But that's the way the dice rolled.
This channel is for new to D&D folks get started with learning the core game rules and mechanics. Did you mean to post this in #dnd-discussion for more general discussion?
Yes sorry! They were right next to each other and I'm on mobile!
Hey folks!
My name is Nitay, always wanted to play D&D but had not clue from where to start. unfortunately, it is hard to find any live action sessions in my country so I'm down starting here and now but have no clue on how to start.
I did try Roll 20 but it was a bit complicated, i found myself joining a session but the chat was empty for almost an hour

Welcome! If you're new to DnD, the best place to start is with the free basic rules linked above. We also have a set of videos if you're more of a visual learner, and we have the #learn-to-play channel for more resources.
If you're looking for a game after having read through the rules, you can begin your search on this server in #find-a-game . Finally, if you've got any specific questions, we'll be happy to help you here!
Learn from my mistake. I'd chose to be a rogue subclass thief for my first campaign, after learning more from three past session's I'd would have rather chose soulknife.
If you feel you picked the wrong subclass, you can always have a chat with your DM and see if you can switch or if they have any advice.
ik but I like to keep it authentic as possible. just a tip I’m leaving for the newcomers of my opinion.
Hello!
Im jasper and ive never played dnd before but ive always wanted to! Im just really not sure where to start and could use some help
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some good info to get you started, but if you’ve got any specific questions, fire away.
Thank you!
When multiclassing how much does it matter what class you take at 1st level?
Primarily it affects which saving throws you get proficiency in. The #character-discussion channel would be glad to go over your choices.
Alright which of the 2 editions is better looked at and received? 2024 or 2014? Cause I'm heavily mixed on it
thank you ill check that out later, idk how i missed that channel
That's the perfect description of the community reception of 2024. "Heavily mixed".
I feel like the 2024 is Base 2014 + Tasha's
A lot of the things they added already existed in some form in Tasha's. They overhyped crafting and its basically still leaves a lot to be desired.
It depends on the table honestly. Some tables with existing campaigns like mine won't touch 2024 because of balancing issues.
Righto, so as an analogy to help me understand, it's basically a 30 dollar game but charging 70 for it. Thanks for the help!
Oh is there a way to turn off 2024 version when making characters in Dndbeyond? It's very confusing and accidental when I pick the wrong thing and rules get mixed up
I gotta check myself
As long as you pick the 2014 class, I don't see the 2024 stuff pop up
Again, it depends on the table. It's not easy to just transition a campaign that's been going on for months/years to a newer version for balancing purposes. I assume eventually most tables will start using the 2024 version however.
I'd easily recommend the 2024 book over 2014 for anyone just starting to learn the game. The new book does a much better job at actually teaching everything.
Thou shalt not slander the Warlord or Battlemind.
Ngl, whoever played 4e for real enjoyed it for what it was. The others who didn't would never know.
bring them back!!!!!
Hello! I'm Ella and I've never played dnd before but have wanted to play for a bit now! I bought the starter set so I'm gonna try to learn a little using that to start with :))
im new and never player dnd before.... uh... how do i get started? (._.)
Hello all. I've been doing a lot of reading and watching. As some of you know Matt Colville has put out a lot of videos and I have a question about his hiding the dice rolls.
He said if you roll your dice all the time behind the screen that your players will suspect your fudging the rolls. He says 20-30% of the time he does it behind the screen. He doesn't clarify but what does he mean? All of his rolls that are checks are in sight of the players and the battle rolls and saving throws are behind the screen?
I feel like that's what he meant because I feel like the players would get suspicious if half way through the battle or on one key saving throw or attack all the sudden was rolled being the screen. TYIA for your input.
Have fun, there's a lot to read, learning to DM for my first time. DM me if you want to have a newb dm so we can all be terrible on our first playthroughs together lol
I do this at most of my physical tables but I never really thought about it. Basically I roll behind the screen when I’m sitting down - and I roll in the public when standing up (in general).
So I do roll open and closed during combat but I’ve never gotten feedback that it feels sneaky. I’m guessing it just feels natural and after enough time, my players all assume I’m not fudging dice? Tough to say for sure.
I feel like if your players trust you, like see that there villains do fail at times etc, then it doesn't matter. If they don't trust you they might get suspicious purely by being annoyed at losing etc
Yeah the video was basically saying that sometimes you have to fudge the dice to make sure the players are having a fun time. Like for instance he had an encounter that the team should have just steamrolled, until he could not miss a single hit and all his players were missing all their hits due to bad luck. So he fudge a death strike or a saving throw to give them an edge and not wipe the team on an easy encounter
Oh that's a good point, I feel like that's ok
I thought you originally meant fudging rolls so the bad guys would do better
how do i get started on D&D? do i like.. create my character first? ;-;
I'm trying to get into D&D but i don't fully understand how to create a character, can someone pls explain(Dm me)
What have you got so far? Where exactly are you stuck?
Chapter 2 in the Free Rules does a good job of walking through the steps, but if you’ve got any specific questions, fire away.
Hi 👋🏼
Spoilers for DM discussion || I almost always roll behind the screen and never had players question once whether my rolls are fudged (been dming for 5 years). Sometimes I will roll once or twice in front of everyone if i feel like it (for dramatic effect) then go back to rolling behind the screen, never had an issue. I fudge rolls maybe 1/4th of the time, usually if an encounter is too hard, or too easy. It really depends on your players, whether they trust you, and when players are having a good time they don't really question anything lol. In the end as the dm it's your perogative whether or not to fudge your rolls, and if it adds enjoyment to your table I say go for it, just never let your players know about it lol ||
alright so uh i kinda finished created my character rn (used dndbeyond).. am i like... ready for some gameplays?
hello, so I'm new to DnD and I don't know too much about it, other than that like it's a fantasy rpg board game right, and that you can create characters? and I thought it is very fun and I wann play it but idk what to do so
Basically the same here 😅😂
Hi I am pat of DnD club at my school but I would like to play more then just once a week I am looking for a campaign to join is there anything DM that would be interested in a new player? I would really appreciate.
Will do haha thank you 😄
ay beginner gang
Whenever you want to jump in is up to you!
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups whenever you want to start.
You can also share your character over in #character-discussion if you want to show off or get someone to double-check everything.
If you’ve got art you want to share, we’ve got a few channels for that: #channel-guide message
ohhh I see
so about the game, how do you start it like, is it a site? is there a channel for it? like idk whre to go after you share a character
#learn-to-play has some good info to get your started!
What you described here is fairly accurate.
Ultimately, D&D is just you and your friends telling a story together.
Your choices, the game rules, and the random roll of the dice help shape that story.
Most of you (the players) control only a single character in that story. Your character sheet lists the things your character can do, and you decide how your character reacts as the story unfolds.
One other person (the DM) controls everything else in the story: the NPCs, the locations, etc. They help guide the story and present challenges for the player characters to overcome.
Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here.
another question.. is it optional or required to fill up stuff like "faith(no idea what to put here for now)/allies or enemies" stuff like that?
Yeah, those ones are all optional.
They’re just there to help you flesh out your character. You can as much or as little of it as you like.
alright
My direct message offer also extends to all new players too
I see, thank you very much for your time, and I'll look into the channels you suggested
Anytime. I'm itching to play too after all the reading. I'm still reading and learning lol
Where do I get help with my character?
What kind of help did you need, exactly?
Sameeee I'm in the middle of making my first character and I'm realising just how much there is to learn in this game
real

Cool thank you
Haha yeah and after that there's other things like miles traveled per day and whatnot. DnD is waaaay deeper than it appears on the surface.
Is there actually? Wow😅
question, how does crits work with 2014 way of the four elements monk spells like fist of unbroken air or water whip?
i.e. base damage is 3d10 and lets say i put an extra 2 ki points for a total of 5d10, on a crit that'd be 10d10?
Neither of these examples are able to crit, as neither uses an attack roll, only force the enemy to make a save
i know its a save not a hit roll but in case the creature has paralyze and so does melee dmg crit
or is it even then not a crit?
Nope, for something to be a crit, there needs to be an attack roll, and happens on a roll of 20 on the die before modifiers
These two force the creature to make a save, which they can fail, but there is no way for a critical hit to happen without an attack roll from the attacker
So, the paralyzed condition says this:
Any attack that hits the creature is a critical hit if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature.
The most important thing here is that it says "any attack." In D&D terms, just because something does damage does not make it an "attack." You are only making an attack if there is an attack roll. If the damage comes from a saving throw, or something else, then it is not an attack
oh. i thought fist of unbroken air counted as an attack as you take the attack action to do it
i see, i see...
How is everyone
Yeah things can be a little confusing
Attack in D&D's rules terms refers specifically to an attack roll
In a common sense, one would call a dragon breathing fire on you an attack, but in D&D terms it forces a save for you, and by the rules is not an attack 😏
What’s your opinion on bladesingers?
They seem fun and I really wanna play one eventually
Where would i go to find a session?
That channel contains instructions for this server's way of looking for groups online at least
@smoky basin lol yeah but that's not a big deal I guess unless there's like a time limit for something.
Interesting👀

Heeyyy
I have enough knowledge to somewhat create a character and character sheet
and i also play in an irl dnd group, although it's hyper homebrew and not so much like the traditional game, especially in the combat aspect
I want to play a more traditional game :) though i feel like i dont know enough.
Do i need the players handbook? I'll be getting one by christmas but im so desperate to play lol im wondering if it's possible to play as a newbie without it?
Thx for having me
Start with the free basic rules. If after a few D&D games and you still like it, then look at investing in the Players Handbook. But it’s totally doable to play D&D starting with the free basic rules.
ah awesome, thanks :]
Hiya! My names Mars, I've played a few campaigns of DnD but I'm still pretty new to the whole thing! I would love to find a campaign i can join but i would also just like to try and make some friends!
Hello! I'm new to D&D and I've been wanting to play for a while now, but never had the chance. So I first want to know how to make a character, and learn how the dice work(I have a set already) then join a campaign that is ok to work with a newcomer :]

The bot post there should have some answers about the how to play & such.
Ohh! Yay!
I have a small question what does the range on a longbow being 150/600ft mean? it is very confusing
Some ranged attacks, such as those made with a Longbow, have two ranges. The smaller number is the normal range, and the larger number is the long range. Your attack roll has Disadvantage when your target is beyond normal range, and you can’t attack a target beyond long range.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#Range
Thank you Colossus, youre a life saver :D
I have another question, what if I want to make a character, or join a campaign that is based off a game?
This is something you should discuss with your DM and the people you are playing with. There are no rules against it, but some people may not like the idea, because it might break their immersion. Other people may be absolutely fine with it, or even really enjoy it. This is one of the aspects of the game that entirely depends on who you are with, and what everyone's preferences are
Alright :] so just have to find a campaign that is specifically looking to do that?
Or at least one where people don't mind if you do it.
Not necessarily. And you don't necessarily have to say outright that you're basing the charcter off something else.
Like, for example, an inquisitive rogue could completely be based on Shawn Spencer from Psych and fit without being a bit deal other than dropping the 80s references.
see i wanna join a campaign that is kind of like genshin impact, and so making a character is kind of hard since im not sure how to do
It depends on how heavy handed you are with it. If you show up with a brooding rich man named Bruce Wayne, without talking to anyone about it beforehand, it may or may not upset people. Its never a bad idea to get people's consent and be upfront about what you want out of a game
True dat, Colosssu.
But on the other hand, a noble human monk Warrior of Shadow? That's Batman even without the name.
ok, well i just wanna be a healer :] i already have an idea of what i want
If you want to make a character that is inspired by other media, that is much more acceptable, and will fit within most games.
Hi, I’m new!
So what exactly can you change according to the 2014 rules when you level up as warlock? just the spells you have prepared?
2014 warlocks dont prepare spells
you get to swap out a couple things
Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the warlock spells you know and replace it with another spell from the warlock spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the invocations you know and replace it with another invocation that you could learn at that level.
Hey. Brand new here. Played my first D&D game this evening.
Question for you. D&D Beyond related.
I hadnt realised previously that you need to purchase the books/digital through D&DB in order to ahve them appear at characte creation time. Thus, despite owning the 2014 set and the PM2024, i have none of those options for my character account.
If I purchase the Dungeon masters guide through D&DB - both physical and digital - will it unlock everything for me? or is something hidden behind the players manual?
Buying the digital DMG would unlock only the content in the DMG itself.
If you’ve already got the physical books, you could recreate the pieces you want to use through DDB’s homebrew system, for private use only. #ddb-support can help if you need a hand there.
Or if you’re in a campaign where someone else owns those books and Content Sharing is enabled (by a Master Tier subscriber), you’d be able to use that shared content in that campaign.
Thanks for the explanation.
Hello everyone, i'm a totally new user interested in the DnD universe and never had the chance to get into it, now, i would love any kind of any experience player to guide me and check on my character sheet and progress, thank you, DMs open C: 🖤
Same but I’m creating a character right now
Also can I use vicious mockery at level 1 or do I have to be a higher level?
I have a new Tabaxi character, but on D&D beyond that species is not an option. What is the closest species to the Catfolk I can select with the same or similar benefits or details?
It told me you get it at level five, but that’s just after a few seconds on google
Hey there, I'm a new user who is itching to play some DnD. I have a character sheet ready to go on DnD beyond.
Hi
If you have that spell at level 1, then yeah, you can use it.
is there any good online (free) database of a mosnter database
There’s a bunch of free ones here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters?filter-source=1&filter-source=148
#character-discussion can probably help you narrow down your choices.
I am pretty sure it would depend on campaign, but how likely am I allowed to make a four armed character? Without any too over powered benefits, they are mainly just more small things can be held at a time n such
Having more hands actually is very powerful.
There’s only one official race that has four, the Thri-Kreen, but they’re limited in what they can do with those extra ones.
I’m just doing it more of a regular mutation, but most the time that said genetic mutation the secondary arms are smaller or generally weaker than the regular ones. Which is something I’m alr with
Then yeah, if you pattern it after Thri-Kreen, I think your odds improve.
Nice, thanks!
I'm new to D&D and wanna get started on it can I get help please
Hey sorry to bother you but do you know anyone who could help me for beginning D&D
Check out #learn-to-play and the resources pinned in this channel.

Hey, I read a blog that was something about roll20 adventure in the discord. Can anyone help me find out more?
so i had my first irl game tonight, they covered most of the basic basics but idk much about the rest of anything
What don't you know about
This Discord announcement? https://discord.com/blog/discord-roll20-adventure-and-dnd-shop-collection
Idk much about dnd and every server ive joined to try and play it has wasted my time
soooo i got given some aid making a character sheet (sorcerer tiefling) but most of the things weren't actually explained too good outside of what numbers to put next to stuff
Yeah that’s the one
Have you done stats?
i did the stats all okay i think the main thing i was having trouble with was like the spells (jumped in at level 5) i just kinda picked a couple to cast a few times
and like bonuses to which things and when (they might've just given me bad instruction too)
You have the spell slots written down?
the guy just said 4 1st slot spells, 3 2nd slot spells, 2 3rd slot spells and that kinda threw me a little
does that mean how many spells i can have or what
So the level of spell slot determines the spells you can cast so for example with a 4th level spell slot you can up cast a lower level spell slot to that (some of them) but you can't cast a 4th level spell with the 1st level spell slot
wait so how many spells was i supposed to have because i got confused when i realised that'd give me 9 whole separate spells to cast
like the other sorcerer didn't have that many spells at all (not including cantrips which i did get right i think)
So you have a number of spells you can have prepared at one time I your spell book which by the sounds of it is 9 and if i understand wizard correctly you can sorta swap them around for how many spells you want access to for each spell slot level although you might want someone else to check that as I don't rlly play casters
Each caster has a different amount of spells they can have prepared
i was playing a sorcerer in this game not a wizard
A
i'm still trying to pore over the rulebook but my attention span at this hour isn't too great lmao
Might be the subclass tbh I don't like messing around with the casters for this reason it's a bit weird and confusing on how the spells and prepared spells work :p
😬
so i don't even remotely understand subclasses i don't even think those were involved
Basically they give different abilities from normal and let you access other spells from other classes
each class has a subclass you should take a look at them
OH also what counts as a bonus action during your turn? i kept hearing other players using bonus actions but idk what i would've been able to do for that during my turn
will do, once my attention span recharges tomorrow
So U use an action to cast a spell or dash or melee and bonus action is stuff U can do after that so pretty much a fighter can do there melee and they have an ability called second wind which gives the back some health bonus actions let you do stuff that state uses your bonus action but U can't use ur main action to do a bonus action
gotcha, it says specifically in the rules which stuff can be used for bonus actions right??
It will say if the ability requires a bonus action
idk i glanced at a few things in there and never saw bonus action next to any of them, maybe i was just looking at the wrong things
Prolly
A description/definition of bonus action straight from the free basicr rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#BonusAction
Ty
A Bonus Action is a special action that you can take on the same turn that you take an action. You can’t take more than one Bonus Action on a turn, and you have a Bonus Action to take only if a rule explicitly says so.
So if your class has a feature that takes a bonus action to use, you can use your bonus action to take it.

thanks so much for your input guys!
and the final thing i had to ask about do you always put bonuses onto rolls with a bonus attached to it? my dm gave me some mixed signals about that
So when you make an attack roll or skill check, you add any proficiency bonus (if proficient) and any modifiers to it.
Btw U don't add prof bonus to damage rolls
Correct
ohhhhhhh okay that might've been where the mixed signals came from thanks for clearing that up 😅
Iirc some equipment give negatives if you don't have prof with them like I thiiink if ur wearing armour ur not prof in U can't cast spells but that might be just bg3
is bg3 kind of a good way to kinda learn the game a little better too?
Uh
or like give helpful tips at least
Kinda but it's got quite a bit of alterations to rules and feats and what not
It's a similar premise and just a good game to play
Proficiency (see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#Proficiency)
If you have proficiency with something, you can add your Proficiency Bonus to any D20 Test you make using that thing. A creature might have proficiency in a skill or saving throw or with a weapon or tool.
okay gotcha, i feel like i should really try to actually play that again i only played it a little after it came out (and for some reason got many subtle hints during my game to play it again lmao)
Not being proficient in an armor - if you wear it, you actually roll at disadvantage and you can't cast spells while wearing armor you're not proficient in.
tbh i was never actually told about armour i think my dm just assumed i was wearing some when i joined (even though literally nobody said anything to me about armour)
Hello! I wanna play dnd but don’t know where to start. Any tips?

Ur a sorcerer right?
yea
Then you would not be proficient in armor but would likely want to use the spell Mage Armor
U don't have any armour proficiency so that's probably why
tbf i was never actually attacked by anything i just kinda appeared and oneshot a weak enemy then ran away
Yeah that's kinda ur entire job blast them and run away
it was with a dagger actually
speaking of, how many times are you legally allowed to cast a 2nd slot spell before a rest?
So sorcerers and wizards are extremely squishy U don't wanna be near anyone and ideally don't blow up ur teammates (optional)
How ever many spell slots U have for that spell slot level
Does anyone have a party I can join
Yeah depends on how many spell slots of that level (or higher) that you have
Read the info and instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels to find a game.
which at lvl 5 sorcerer is 3 i think, so i guess the dm just got confused when i said it's my third 2nd spell lmao
And U said U currently have 3 2nd level spell slots so U could do it 3 times
yeah my dm got confused 🤣
This game tends to be confusing
he just passed it off as "new player privilige" anyway lmao
Oh yeah a sort of word of warning if you haven't been told already this game is about cause and affect so might want to keep that in the back of your head of you do something because U found it silly idk set a villager on fire or do something to mess with someone depending on the DM there could be a good chance that it comes back to bite U sooner or later
oh yeah i knew that going in i was specifically told "don't screw up the entire game for other players" 😂
Like I dropped a big block of metal and the npc black Smith's door step and kinda waited there till he woke up and almost screwed myself over if I didn't roll well for persuasion to apologise
He broke his toes on it
are most dms okay with evil aligned characters btw?
Depends on the DM and story if most of the party is neutral or good in alignment probably not so U might wanna check with ur DM first
then i'm glad my alignment never came into question 😅
And some places in lore have barriers that block out evil creatures
(depending on what settings ur doing)
next time i go there i'm gonna ask if an evil alignment is okay. the dm was pretty cool tbf
thanks so much for your help!
👍
Hope U enjoy ur next session
not often, I certainly don't but it mostly depends on the other characters and the adventure your DM has prepared.
At my table I do not use alignment, and so technically a character with the ideals most commonly associated with evil alignments are permitted.
What I ask of my players is that they have a suitable bond that gives them an inalienable alliance with the party. D&D is meant to be a cooperative roleplaying game, and making a character that goes against this core concept simply will not work at my table.
Being evil by itself is fine, and can be interesting to have in a party
Problem with being evil comes from when "evil" means "against the party / party's objectives"
Aka the dreaded "its what my character would do", and doing stuff like attacking the party orbstealing, which is not gonna be fun for anyone
Yeah
Hiii
Hi
I just have a small question since I've never done a game of DnD, am I forced to play as one of the race proposed or can I just pick one I'd like to play? (I guess it depends on the Person that rule the game ;-;)
Depends on the race they are allowing they might let U use common and exotic race but not monstrous races or plane shift races
Trolls with their ability to regenerate HP at will are a tad powerful to play as a PC.
That being said, you can apply something called 'flavoring' to turn another race (aesthetically) into however you want them to appear.
I would perhaps consider using the racial traits of the Orc, flavored as a character that looks like a troll. You could even reflavor the relentless endurance trait (get back up at 0hp 1/day) as troll-like regeneration
But there is a list of races to choose from and should say monstrous or not
Yeah the regenerative skill seemed to be too much that's what I thought ;-;
For now, I would consider giving all the races a read through and see if there is anything 'official' that catches your eye.
When you get a few games under your belt, that would be a better time to start pushing the boundaries of what can be made possible through creative reflavoring, imo.
I am pretty new to dnd, currently lvl 2 wizard. I have an idea in mind of the build I want to try. Where can I ask question about it? Such as: are there other skills/feats that would work better for it?
Thanks!
Spell Slots is more so the "fuel for spells".
Spells Prepared is just, how many you know. What spell you choose, to then expend a slot to pay for the casting
Morning everyone
to my understanding there's a 2014 handbook, and a newer one this year.
do i get one over the other? do i get both? is it worth getting the old one if there's a newer one now, or is it too new that most people are still using the old one? idk man 😭
First start playing with the 2024 free basic rules
only after you know that you like the game and want more, consider buying a book
And if I had to pick one over the other, I'd start with the 2024 Players Handbook as it is much better at helping new folks understand the game.
But again, start with the free materials first.
I play homebrew dnd with some friends irl, i know i want to continue playing as well as beginning a less homebrew campaign at some point
ah gotcha
i came up with a character (im new to dnd) but i feel like my character is very mary sue style BUT BTU her history is very op like goddess celestial type BUT BUT now in the campaign shes a mortal and forget all about her being an aasimar and stuff and also her wings were literally torn off her back and she lost all her divine powers so she just a normal ahh woman with some druid magic just want some opinoin on it, am i doing too much??? :'))
Sounds good to me btw #character-discussion would be the appropriate channel
oh okay thank you so much
hello
Hi
Actually I'm new here and I'm new to the whole DnD stuff. I've only played several offline games with my friends and well... I found out I prefer to DM rather than play as a player. So I'm currently learning how to DM from my bf and he told me to hold an online one shot session to see how far I've understood the whole thing... would anyone tell me where I can find a player?
I can't exactly post anything on #looking-for-players
Idk how that works tbh i haven't used the channel I just play in person
hey guys can anyone help troubleshoot why our new friend can’t make a post in #looking-for-players
i’ve never done it before personally but if anyone has any advice feel free to help out
Make sure their Discord client is up to date and make sure any cooldown (if they posted previously in the last 7 days) is completed. But also a better question for #moderator-support. Also why doesn’t your friend ask about it?
They also need to run the bot commands in #find-a-game or a regular discussion channel. The LFG channels are locked down and only the bot can post directly there. But folks can use the threads to make any corrections or connect with potential groups/players/games.
tysm, they’re new to this chat so i wanted to help get some attention for them. i actually recommended this group.
@sick rivet i hope this helps.
I... Asked up there?
I'm sorry if my wording is a bit off
Sorry - didn’t catch the initial context! 😅
So technically I should chat with the bot? Or... Well, I'm kinda struggling with how discord channels work here 😅
So type /looking-for
That will bring up a prompt to select which lfg channel you want to post to
Select the one you want to post to, then the bot will give you a form to fill out
Once you submit that form, the bot creates a post in the specified lfg channel and attaches a thread to it
Use the thread to make any updates/clarifications and communications with the folks you’re interested in playing with
as a simic hybrid what are good combos with your extra appendges?
Doing something silly like grappling and dragging four creatures around as a Simic Hybdrid Barbarian is something I've wanted to do for one 😏
Can you tell me where exactly I should submit the form?
Are you a DM looking for players? You would select the “players” option. The bot would post to #looking-for-players .
Unless you’re asking where to run the commands?
If that, then you can run them in #find-a-game
In fact #find-a-game explains how to use the bot to post in the LFG channels
helo

Nice
hello i just joined
Welcome!
and i dont know how to dm or play the game that well.
No worries! #learn-to-play has some good info to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
how does battle work?
Broadly speaking: at the start of combat, everyone rolls for initiative by making a Dexterity check.
Based on those rolls, everyone takes turns from the highest result to the lowest one.
Once everyone's taken a turn, the next round starts again at the top.
When it's your turn, you can take an Action, a possible Bonus Action, move a set distance, and a few other minor things.
You can find the full rules for combat here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#Combat
I would like to play a game online where I can type my responses. I am also fairly slow, don't write well, and don't want to mess up someone else's game.
You can do that!
Thank You

If you have any questions, I or someone else in this chat can answer them, but I can't walk you through the entire process
Chapter two in the Free Rules does a good job of walking through all the steps:

Any tips for a dm starting out?
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Also: howtogm.guide got shared around here the other day, and looks to be pretty solid.
Hey Im a little confused on saving throws. When I cast a spell as a Druid the enemy would need to make a saving throw. But when is there saving throw successful? I know its caster’s spellcasting ability and proficiency bonus. But what is my casters spellcasting ability?
As a Druid, it's Wisdom.
If you cast spells, the Spellcasting feature of your class will define what the spellcasting ability is for that class.
You spellcasting ability is based on what class you are playing. It will say which ability score to use in the "Spellcasting" feature in your class's description
And their save is successful if their total (after any bonus/penalty) is at least as high as your DC.
(Ties go to the person rolling the d20)
hey hows it going
Read this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and check out Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). Those should help get you started. There are a bunch of other resources as you encounter new challenges as well.

You can also search the server using dm advice and/or dm tips as keywords. You'll find plenty of good suggestions!
Okay I get that so my Wisdom currently is 17 so they need to make a saving throw for 19? That seems a little high 🙂
Your spell save DC is 8 + Proficiency Bonus + Spellcasting Ability Modifier
Ohh okay now it makes more scence perfect. Thank you very much
So, with a 17 WIS at level 1-4, the DC would be 8 + 2 (proficiency bonus) + 3 (ability mod) = 13.
what are your opinions on druids wildshaping into owlbears?
Moon druid of sufficiently high level, I don't see why not. (And I'll grant that it's likely not strict RAW, depending on what MM2025 says). Other druids, no so much.
i just thought it wasn't allowed with how it's classified as a monstrosity
See my parenthetical note. 🙂
makes... sense
That is correct. It is not possible for a druid to wild shape into an owlbear within the rules of the game. Doing so would be homebrew or a house-rule
Barring a reclassification under MM2025.
We're still several months away from the release of the 2025 Monster Manual, so it doesn't do us much good to speculate on it now
mhm
interesting
i have a lot of questions to ask since my only exposure to dnd outside of hearing it being played above me was playing bg3
but i think i'm better off reading books and stuff
You can learn a lot from reading the rules, yes. Though of course, we're happy to answer any specific questions you might have along the way
Yo there's like a school club for d&d and i decided to join because it sounded cool but now i want some advice?
For now i chose gnome-wizard and got some nice throws (20 for intelligence) but now im ineterested in what is should choose for my background, for now outlander sounds good since i imagined my story to be like a gnome living in the mountains in an abandoned village of ancient wizards and learning from thee library?
Is that good?
Do you know, is your group playing with the 2014 rule or the 2024 rules?
No, but we have the 5e handbook
Is there a dragon or a giant on the cover?
Both player's handbooks are considered to be "5e." But which one you are using will affect your choices in character creation
dude like
is it okay to like come up with some character-specific bullshit like "my druid's primary wildshape is an owlbear but his spirital projection is a fatass violent rabid panda that he can summon"
i know it breaks like 5 rules at once, i was just wondering if it's okay to ask DM for such thingies
What does that mean
In 2014, they published the original 5e Players Handbook. Earlier this year, they published a new players handbook that is also for 5e, but updates some of the rules and character creation choices
too much to discuss in one post. Almost everything
Its up to your DM to decide which ruleset your group is using
Is what i chose good tho?
In general, you should follow the rules for character creation. You don't get to create your own specific powers or abilities for your character. No one can force you to play the game a specific way, so if you and your group want to use custom rules, then you can. But its not a good idea to do so when you are a beginner. It is incredibly tough to create balanced and fun content for a game you don't even know how to fully play yet
well, true
It's like designing a mod or a balance patch for a video game before playing it
yeah yeah
That said, while you should stick with the printed game mechanics, it's possible to describe the fiction for it more or less however you like.
A beastmaster ranger who has a beast of the land companion could have a panther, or a wolf, or a bear, or a weasel, or.....
A friend of mine has an artificer whose faerie fire spell is described as a glitter bomb.

Hi.
I have a marketplace question if that is okay.
I own most of the books but didn’t purchase them through D&DB, nor do i own the digital versions. However I do want to use the app/web for FULL character creation.
If I purchase the PM 2024 digital will that prove me all the content from 2014 (and more recent) or am I still going f to have massive gaps in content?
Hi everybody who got enough time to see this message I wanna see this DND thing being able to do anything sounds fun so I want to give it a try how do I start so I can quickly mess around in the rules of course
Hi! Always glad to hear new people giving D&D a go. If you check out the server linked in the above bot post it should give you a good place to get started with. If you run into any problems or anything doesn't make sense while reading through the rules feel free to ask here and Im sure someone will be around to lend a hand.

Buying the 2024 PHB (or any other book) would give you access only to the content from that book.
If you’ve already got the physical books, though, you could use their homebrew system to recreate the pieces you need.
#ddb-support can help if you have any questions there.
Or if your campaign has Content Sharing enabled and someone else has those books, you’d be able to use any shared content in that campaign.
?tag ddb contentsharing
Content Sharing
A player or DM with a Master Tier subscription can enable Content Sharing in up to five campaigns. Once Content Sharing is enabled, any content unlocked by anyone in the campaign gets shared with everyone else, and they can use those shared character options for characters in that campaign. Hiya I'm interested in playing D&D more and I've only played 2 D&D games ❤️
Hi. My friends thought it would be fun to play DnD and asked me to DM. I've watched so many videos but class traits/feats are extremely complicated to me. Do they just effect skills? How does it work?
There's no one answer to that. Every class feature and feat tells you what it does
Some things affect skills but most of them do a variety of other things instead
That said, you don't need to memorize all the class features to DM
So it would just effect like situations that happen in the plot(?)
Also would it be possible if I don't look at class traits 😳
You’ll have a hard time playing D&D if you don’t look at your class features.
Your class defines the vast majority of the things your character can do.
I got no idea of i should ask this here but i have an idea of a character i want to play but idk if its even possible,
So basically i want to play a some type of wizard or sorcerer that casts spells by writing on some usually papper but by accident because of their terrible handwriting, is that possible?
So from what I understand classes don’t necessarily buff skills but just like encounters? Is that correct
“Skills” has a very specific meaning in D&D.
Most ability checks involve using a skill, which represents a category of things creatures try to do with an ability check.
The skills are shown on the Skills table, which notes example uses for each skill proficiency as well as the ability check the skill most often applies to.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#SkillProficiencies
Do you mean they cast their spells by accident? Or that when they try to cast their spells, things might go awry?
I mean they cast spells by accidentally writing a spell on papper kinda like accidentally making a spell scroll but it activates immediately
Yeah, I don’t see any reason you couldn’t.
You’re generally welcome to change how things are described as long as you don’t change how they work.
So as long as you follow the normal rules for that spell, then the rest is just flavor.
Any spell they cast is an accident then?
Well yes, i was thinking that they would randomly discover it accidentally when writing some papper, so any spell they cast would be more random but by intent after they discorved ish how it works
It works even if its by writing and not likr spell casting verbaly?
If you’re trying to ignore verbal components for a spell that normally has them, that changes the rules.
So you’d have to talk to your DM.
But as long as the dm agress to swap the verbal to writing instead it should work?
Not new, but I haven't played in years.
Recently got asked to DM for my school's dnd club, and I've got one week to learn what I'm doing. Does anybody have any links to good, easy-to-understand DM guides?
Please ping me in any replies ^
I mean somatic components also exist + it's gonna depend on your DM, so just talk with them.
And one narrative problem I noticed was if your character casts spells due to accidents when writing, how might they cast spell like during combat and stuff? Since, it's an "accident" they might not be able to consistently cast spells.
Unless you mean they learn spells by accident.
I was mostly thinking of leaving that up to probability, say ive had 3 spells that should be able to cast then i cast to see which one of thoes spells it casts or if its a bust and no spell is cast
I send a lot of people to Matt Colvilles web series on running the game here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_&si=YqECb5ZD3_LlimbO.

thank you SO much
would anyone be able to help me create a custom homebrew item for one of my characters
i was looking for it, turns out i dont have that channel selected, Thank for the help!
Im fairly new to dnd I've played and hosted a bit. and I'm making an elden ring dnd campaing for my friends. (As best as I can) and I just realized I don't actually know the official rules to dnd. And I'm trying to homebrew some classes based off of the stats in elden ring. And I've run into a really stupid roadblock.
- What lvls do classes get access to new spells. Like 1st -> 2nd lvl spells.
- How down spell slots work? I mean how do I determine how many a class has, and when they get more.
- Do classes get spells EVERY level or every few.
I'm very aware this is a stupid roadblock and I feel very stupid. So if someone could please help me with this it'd be greatly appreciated.
A character can start using 2nd-level spells as soon as they have 2nd-level spell slots.
Spell slots themselves are basically a price you pay to cast a spell of that level. If you run out of “money”, you can’t cast any more spells.
When a class can learn additional spells will vary based on the class. I’d say it’s close to every level on average.
How do I know how many spells slots a class should have? How many should they gain, and how often?
Each class has a table that shows how many spell slots (and often how many spells) they have at each level.
The Druid Features table, for example:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/2190878-druid#DruidFeatures
Oh alright. So do different classes have different amount of spell slots, and when they get them?
If you were to check level 3 there, you’ll see a druid of that level has 2 cantrips, 6 prepared spells of level 1+, 4 level 1 spell slots, and 2 level 2 spell slots.
Yep, and some go to higher spell levels than others.
Colloquially, there’s “full casters” like Druid, which all go up to 9th-level spells.
“Half casters” like Paladin go up to 5, and unlock them at a slower pace.
And then there’s a fighter subclass and a rogue one that also unlock spellcasting. You might see those referred to as “third casters”.
Ok could you link a fullcaster and a half caster so I could use them for reference?
There’s the Druid link I shared above.
Bards, Clerics, Sorcerers, and Wizards are also full casters.
Paladin, Ranger, and Artificer are the half-casters.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/2190881-paladin
And Warlocks also get spells, but theirs works differently from everyone else.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/2190885-warlock
They only have a couple spell slots of a single level, but that level increases over time. They also get their spell slots back after a short rest, while everyone else needs a ling rest.
Thank you very much! I will base my class's like mage, but different, and paladin, but different off the sheets. Thanks once again.
hello! so ive found people who are intrested in a genshin impact based campaign but how do i find a DM for it
It said that I don't have permission to message in there
use #find-a-game , it tells you how to use the bot to get a post in there
Ohh ok!
Also note we only allow D&D games to be posted here (you could have a D&D game inspire by insert media thing here). But to be posted here it needs to allow players to use the free basic rules or an official D&D book to be able to play.
Help pls I ain't know where to start
Yep!
Check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel.
so im taking an oc of mine and making it character, i have about half of it done (i think), but how should i go about this?
Look at what the classes and species do, pick the choices that best approximate your character.
So then what's your question exactly?
im doing it through the website atm and ive gotten to the 'abilities' part, i guess i just dont understand those that much, sorry
Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
okay, thanks and sorry to bother
I read the learn to play thing but I'm a little stuck, I hate being that kind of person but I think I might need someone to help guide me, sorry to ask

I'm just really confused I read the stuff and I'm not really sure what I'm doing but it's ok I don't know what to ask really
Add a ` on each side.
Switching from 2014 5e to 2024 and I'm not sure where I can read/find an online resource for it. Can I buy online access? If I buy physical books, do I get online for free?
You can find the free rules for 2024 on d&d beyond though
I'm new to this server, I have no idea how you play DND all I know is that you Roll a dice, talk about spells or something and listen to a guy tell a story that you participate in
Haha yeah theres a fair amount to it, but at a very base level that sort of covers the idea of what the game is about. I will add it is more about everyone telling that story cooperatively than just the dungeon master.
The link in the pinned message of this channel and #learn-to-play have a lot of resources to help you get your head around what D&D is all about. If youre still confused after a quick read then feel free to post any question you have here
Okay
Wait so like u grab a sheet of paper and like right ur character on it?
Yeah, you have a Character Sheet that becomes a reference for you during play. It holds all the relevant information that you will need in the game to describe yourself, inspire your roleplay as that character, and tell you what bonuses to add onto the dice you roll
The free Basic Rules can likely explain it better than I can if you'd like to give it a look
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game
im just getting into the game and have been learning the 5E books but now i am hearing they are making new ones. is it worth me continuing to learn 5E or should i just start over with the new books
It's largely impossible to say at the moment. That will come down to the decision made by the table you play at. If you haven't joined a group I would stick with the 2014 rules because most ongoing campaigns at the moment will likely be using that ruleset.
The new books are still fifth edition.
But you can check out the Free Rules if you want to compare:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
That’s not at all what WotC calls it. 😅
For starters, they never ever ever call it “5e”.
They just call it D&D. Only when they need to differentiate it from earlier editions will they call it “fifth edition D&D”.
Likewise, the new Player’s Handbook is now just the Player’s Handbook.
Only when they need to differentiate it from the 2014 Player’s Handbook (which will now always be referred to as such) will they call it the 2024 Player’s Handbook.
Even then, it’s only these core rulebooks that will ever be referred to as 2024, not the edition as a whole — because it’s still fifth edition.
When the 2024 core rulebooks release, we'll drop the “2024” and simply refer to them by their title. (e.g., the 2024 Player's Handbook will just be the Player's Handbook). At that point, we will only clarify the publication date of the books when we're comparing the 2014 and 2024 versions, or simply referring back to the older version.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/community-update#2024_core_rulebooks
spell slots are the DND equivelant of mana, right?
Pretty much
They are whats consumed when you cast a spell
Got it. Thanks
So how do you find the Roll20 adventure mentioned in the blog?
Thanks. I appreciate that you dont control this but it's a frustrating mechanic as it means that unless I drop £100+ I'll never 'catch up' with content..... which just means I won't do it.
Not very new player friendly. 😦

There’s a great place to start. Feel free to ask more questions if you’ve got them!
Most people Ik will continue using 5e in the future. The new books remain in the minority and probably will remain that way for a good while. And tbh the new books still play on 5e they just reworked some rules and classes.
can someone coach me in D&D??
i'm new and i watched a few tutorials but i would love to have someone help me start
Would there maybe be someone available to teach me/coach me how to play dnd and stuff? I know very little and am trying to learn - hopefully get into a party and get a campaign started someday soon!
Hey. I certainly can't as I'm new too.
However I've been reading the manual and watching a bit of youtube. My favourites are Dungeon Dudes, Critical Role and have just started watching Dungeons and Daddies (though - be aware of the language and adult themes!).
Aside from grabbing the basics the best thing I'd recommend is getting into a game where they knoew you're new and are happy to support.
I did this via Reddit and played my first game this week. It was a pre-made with a relatively new DM (he had DM'd for his school kids (he's a teacher) but not for adults).
It was a great session.
The hardest part is picking a character and class 🙂 Good luck with that 🙂
I am sure the chat would be happy to help answer questions you might have, but one on one coaching can be a bit of an ask as there are simply quite a lot of users
In the meantime, we do have our #looking-for-players channel to help players connect with the DMs who have posted there
Similar to above. I found that One-Offs are fairly popular here (London) and was a great way for me to get my first adventure.
I kinda makes sense. I would imagine someone starting a new campaign may want a little more experience or certainly have had the opportunity to make sure you (and your personality) fit the game
Ah okay thank you! I'll definitely like try to research a bit more at least so I can ask questions. I guessed that the coaching would definitely be hard to do. But thank you!
thanks for the advice
im trying to create a character right now but im super confused
One peice of advice I can offer and its a big bit............ I spent about 35 years 'learning' the game before I played for the first time this week.
DONT DO THAT 🙂
which bits are confusing?
hahahaha dont worry
Yeah, does make sense! I'll definitely try to maybe find and get started on some one-offs, it'll be hard though, because I would prefer it to be irl but have noone in my area interested in dnd and stuff
not doing that
same no one here even knows DnD
well..... if you do a few online versions then you can change that moving forward 😉
Yeah same here! It's really unfortunate living in places that noone knows it or finds it too nerdy and such
where are you guys, if yo udont mind me asking
I don't mind, I'm in a very small town in Denmark
well.... all you TWO need now is a online DM and your both mostly there 🙂
i would love to find a dm right this moment 🤣
Then I'll sure as hell try to find one cause I really wanna get into this
It's the only option for me anyway
I'm new to this discord so not sure where to check from here but I think Calamity said tehre is a new player channel
or a channel of DM's looking for players
yeah i know i searched but my time zone is tricky
a bit of every thing tbh
yeah. I see that. you might need a late night game (for you). My mid-week game ended at 11pm, which woudl ahve been real late for you, as an example
yeah
have you got the manuals? 2014/24?
well... I can try and help but am very new myself. I chose Paladin and that had some small 'complications'.
As I understand it. Most Melee are relatively simple, once you start bringing spells in a little it gets more complicated, then you go full spells and then it's very complicated
can we do VC if u can help me
One thing that I watched, that really helped, was a few videos on Baldurs Gate 3. It's heavily based around D&D. Thus the actions, bonus actions are all relatively similar.
🙂 sadly not. Am supposed to be working (at work)
oh then its okay
Post your questions and I'm sure someone will answer. My answers tend to come overnight which makes me thing it might be a more US based channel .... but very happy to be wrong on that point

Hello all im new could anyone maybe show me around and make me learn a bit?
Sure! First off, what do you know about DND?
All i know is its name and the main plot where a dungen master makes a campaghin and you have to create your charctor
And then fight and roleplay for the next year and a half
Yea sure
Just looking for personal opinion more than anything.
I’m very new to DnD but I have a bit of knowledge under my belt.
The idea of Adventurer League is really interesting to me. But how accessible for new players is adventurer league?
As far as finding a game I assume if I’m willing to pay for sessions I shouldn’t have too tough a time. But are many people willing to take on a new player for adventure league?
AL is usually one of the most willing to take new players ime, especially if it's games being run at a store/conventions/etc
I know at my local store, we'll make it work with whoever shows up
Or if you sign up for the virtual weekends, they offer specific learn to play games
Yes….. that is fantastic to know. I’m probably more able to get into a virtual session. But I really appreciate that
I think the hardest part about AL for new players is usually just keeping the rules straight. But the current ones should be pinned in #al-news-updates and folks are generally happy to answer questions in the al channels here or wherever you find a game
So I'm about to jump into the seat if a dm and I'm going to run some premade one shots to gain confidence.
My question is , how does it work? Like the one I saw is mostly lore and fluff. So do I use what's written and add what's needed to progress the story?
anyone tryna help me get started w dnd

@carmine shuttle is there anything else like that I should do?
i had 2 one-shots under my belt before i did my first AL game last night and it was real fun and welcoming and beginner friendly
hello am completly new to DND i know almost nothing about it is there any party that can give me a good time playing it for the first time?

welcome! the bot post above has some great resources that you can use to get started. And if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them here. We're more than happy to help
I have educated myself on theory im struggling whit the practical side.
@rigid cypress hi
One of the things i am struggling with is finding a online dice and i looked all over the server to find a link to one but i couldnt?
Online dice?
You either mean ordering dice, which you can do on, like, amazon, or a VTT (stands for Virtual Tabletop) in which case there's a variety of options.
Im a very broke almost graduating uni student. Im looking to get by with my 3 euros for as long as i can
A VTT being a software that just imitates the table. Takes care of your character sheet, takes care of your dice rolls, etc
There's plenty of digital dice online you can use for free.
okay
D&D Beyond has them built in to their character sheets.
There's bots like Avrae that let you roll here in Discord.
Sites like https://dddice.com/ that provide a stand-alone option.
You can even just Google what you want to roll and it'll give you a number.
would that mean i would need to find someone who plays on it. Like i said i have been intrested for long but im a total idiot in the case of how to actually get started
Ultimately what tools a group does or doesn't use is up to that group.
i have just been creating possible caracters in my head
You can literally just type in google "roll 1d20"
And the DM would typically have final say in whether something is allowed.
thank you thank you
I'd wager most DMs would accept a D&D Beyond character sheet, though.
id love to have a trial run for like very short thing but i bet that would be too much to ask of anyone emmersed in the game
You could look for a One Shot to join.
Where the entire story lasts for just a single session.
They're usually a good way to meet different people, and try different ideas, and learn what you like and don't like.
One-Shots are an excellent starting point for the game, I agree
okay
can hex-blade warlocks conjure their weapons or do they need a pre-existing weapon to make their hex-weapon?
Whenever you finish a long rest, you can touch one weapon that you are proficient with and that lacks the two-handed property. When you attack with that weapon, you can use your Charisma modifier, instead of Strength or Dexterity, for the attack and damage rolls. This benefit lasts until you finish a long rest. If you later gain the Pact of the Blade feature, this benefit extends to every pact weapon you conjure with that feature, no matter the weapon’s type.
The hexblade subclass on its own can only apply its effect to a pre-existing weapon. However, if you have the pact of the blade feature, that feature allows you to conjure weapons, and hex warrior will apply to the weapons that you conjure via that effect
Ok…. Jeff another great point. I was going to build a new character specifically for it. But if it’s not compliant no point right? Super helpful thank you
The biggest potential issue comes from being sure that you aren't mixing and matching options from different sources than the campaign that character will appear in allows.
So am I better waiting until I have a spot in an active campaign and building a character at that point?
No; "campaign" in this sense is a bit broad.
Ok a bit more leniency than that. I’ll definitely pop into #al-characters and pick a few brains before I get started
When do disadvantages and advantages come up in campaigns? Does the dm set them?
Rolling with advantage or disadvantage? Mostly, but not completely, DM discretion. You can use Heroic Inspiration to roll with advantage; ranged attacks at long range (and maybe dealing with cover) roll with disadvantage. There are some other circumstances.
(That's not how Heroic Inspiration works.)
But yeah, either a rule or the DM will say you have one of those, depending on the situation.
Looks like I need to revisit the new phrasing, then.
It lets you reroll any die, but you have to use the new roll.
Hm. I need to see in in action more, then, but I think I prefer the 2014 model.
Yeah, 2014's Inspiration did give you actual advantage.
2024 model can be used on any die roll, though. Arguably more broadly applicable but less potent.
I bought the digital player handbook and I keep getting this error when i click it. Everything else works 😦 This page isn’t working

#ddb-support is probably your best bet!
I’m new to D&D, and I wanted to start as a DM with some friends. I was curious if there’s any website that can save a “database” for it, or even keep track of stats and items. And maybe even generate a campaign?..
It really depends on what you mean, and what you are looking for. D&D Beyond is a great site for looking up monster stats, magic items, etc and combining them into encounters and such
a lot of VTTs will be able to do this for you. there are a few options out there that you can look into
VTT?
virtual tabletop
the ones ive personally used are foundry (but this costs money) and owlbear rodeo (which unfortunately cant track items by default)
if youre just looking to track stats and items there are blank character sheets you can fill out
nothing gets simpler then good ol pen and paper
I AM GOING TO MAKE. A FIGHTER. OR A RANGER. WHO HAS MMMMMMMMMM. 2 SWORDS, ONE BIG. ONE SMALL. I DONT REALLY CARE HOW BIG. or small. THEY ARE! BUT THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN. THANK YOU!
you can use the dual wielder feat to dual wield one handed weapons without the "light" property
okay :D
if you dont care how big they are you could also just be wielding two scimitars
go two-weapon fighting style
and early levels youre set, just attack bonus action attack offhand
Eau: feat phrasing has changed now. Requires L4; STR or DEX 13+. Gives a +1 STR or DEX (your choice); max 20. On your turn, if you take the Attack action and attack with a Light weapon, you can make one extra attack as a Bonus Action later on the same turn with a different Melee wapon that isn't Two-Handed. Don't add ability mod unless negative. Can draw or stow two one-handed weapons when you would normally be able to draw/stow only one.
my bad, guess i should clarify '14 vs '24
Was being sure you knew, since your game may not have updated.
no dmg, dont know how to balance encounters with new rules

hey, nothing specific, just looking for someone to take me into first game i guess
so finding a group can take a little bit of time, but generally we suggest folks get a leg up by going over the basic rules - then, if you have questions about things you read in there, we can help answer them
i see, thank you
ill run a game with you i just dont know how to be a GM
I'll take it

Hey everyone im really new to DND i tried to be a DM But its so overwhelming
What i did was make a map, storyline around it and i was lost
It certainly can be overwhelming being a DM!
A lot of stuff to track and manage...
You may want to try running a prewritten adventure
Thats what i did
