And the internet has not helped I was highly confuse with what was on the dnd site
I did specifically ask you if you have questions we can help with here.. But eventually you will need either a physical character sheet to fill in with pencil or pen or an online one.
Which parts have you read and what questions do you have so far?
Can I ask any question here?
No it wasn’t? I can just be eloquent at times.
yes, of course
All good
Are there any games that don’t require vc?
But again I’m still highly confused
Yes actually, they are called Play by Post (PbP) or text based
yes.. those are called "play-by-post" or PbP.
Thank you for the information
keep an eye on #looking-for-players I’ll be running them every few weeks for newbies soon
we all started by looking at some of the rules and asking more experienced players questions.
A great way to learn is to go to a local game store that hosts D&D games and either ask to watch ot join as a new player. But barring that, learning through a discord like this, or from videos online are equally good ways to get going
Are there DND rps that have you rp as country’s sense I’m particularly good at that kind of rps
Doubt it, recommend was misspelled
Just as a note, we ask that people not disclose their exact age. I removed the post.
Online is totally fine. So what things are you finding confusing?
Are there any games for newcomers? I'm really new to dnd.
Everything it was all a bunch of words that I didn’t understand and when I asked y’all the first time a while ago you guys told me to go look at the stuff on the internet
And now I’m asking again but it’s another repeat
We often ask that, because people will join but they haven't looked at any of the basic rules or concepts and it can be hard to help someone if they don't put in a little work themselves.
Resources are tools to give you insight to the game and then we can help clarify any questions that you have
keep an eye on #looking-for-players , most people will take a newbie and I personally will be running text based games every few weeks to teach newbies
kk
I can personally recommend youtube videos, they break it down in a more understandable way
Ok then I’ll watch some a report back if I still have no idea what I’m doing
Sorry if it’s annoying to ask a question again but are there any dnd rps where people rp as country’s?
I've never encountered a D&D game where people RP as countries. you mean like a Mock United Nations?
I mean like rp as empires wars setting up alliances trade all of that
I don’t think that would fall under the banner of Dungeons and Dragons
Ok
Good luck finding what your looking for!
I typically draw my own nations a lot one of the only things I’m good at drawing
Might I reccomend world building? Creating a world and the people’s and nations on it sounds like something you might enjoy. Just a consideration
Thank you I do that a lot but I typically don’t have any other people and it becomes a world where I make all the lore and I just mostly think of animals
Maybe something to look into then would be world building communities to collaborate with other like minded people. #dm-world-building or #homebrew may be suitable spaces inside the server
Can you start a dnd session but it’s a nation rp or is that against the rules?
Honestly by saying this I just wanted to start a nation rp tbh
it sounds like the type of game you would want would be very RP heavy and not so much combat.. for advertising games on this server the rule of thumb is that someone would have to be able to walk in with the basic rules of D&D and be able to play the game. It has to be recognizable as D&D.. Not Live Civ 6 for instance.
I don't know if people would understand when you say Nation RP.. more political type RP
that said, I've had a couple of DMs who built their own worlds that we played D&D in, so they had their own maps, regions and clan names.. but the deities were from D&D, the classes are D&D and the way we engage with the world is D&D rules
Couple videos have been watched and I can confirm
I need a Tylenol
For my new migraine
What I particularly want isn’t dnd I just need some help on how to set up a nation rp server and get some people
If you attacked the videos targeted and marketed for absolute beginners, I’m not sure if anyone can explain it better than that to be honest. If it’s just too much info, make sure to take breaks and re watch tricky parts
that wouldn't be allowed here, sorry. We are strictly for D&D
This server is for DnD specifically, hence the name lol
Do you know any ways how to get people for a rp server?
so, if i may ask, what got you interested in playing D&D?
Find other more generic rpg servers to advertise in would be the way I go about it
was looking at dnd beyond why is there a "core" rules and a legacy rules did something change recently? I don't remember this last time I got on
I need some help how do you get people to join your server and are there servers that are made to promote your own server
Legacy is the 2014 version - the Basic Rules and Player's Handbook are updated to the revised 2024 versions. That is a recent change
what are more people using
This is not a topic appropriate to this channel as it is for beginners in the game of D&D.
You could maybe ask in #non-dnd-topics but there is no guarantee people will have anything.
Thank you for redirecting me bye
I couldn't say.. the 2014 version has been in circulation for 10 years, so... people are still likely using it. They are meant to be backwards compatible though, so you can use some 2014 elements inside the updated 2024 ruleset
They are pretty backwards compatible, but with the power boost in 2024 it is interesting. I’ve seen an equal mix of legacy and new rules being used myself
Hey guys, im a new player and a new dm im looking for a person that can have a one shot with me and explain how to teach the game in the process. if anyone is available please contact me.
i would also
yeah we can make a goroupchat
Generally, we don't allow group formation outside of our looking-for channels.
If you want to find a game, check out #looking-for-players where DMs go to talk about their player needs.
If you want to tell DMs about yourself you use #looking-for-dm
To post in these channels, follow the directions in #find-a-game
it's okay.. just so you know going forward
Any good DND introduction videos?
For learning the rules or just seeing what the game is about?
@errant tiger @scarlet trench I’ll be running some text bases one shots for newbies pretty soon, your welcome to hmu in DMs so I remember you. If either of you is interested in DMing i’ll give dm rights and walk you through my proccess
I’ll likely get the ad up pretty soon and get things moving a little.
What are the races and classes
You can find them detailed in most if not all sourcebooks, additionally check out #learn-to-play
Even just scrolling through the DnD Beyond character creation process shows you all the big ones
Learning the rules
I’d recommend Critical Role’s Handbooker Helper, though it’ll be more relevant to the 2014 rules and aren’t a replacement for reading either the 2014 or 2024 basic rules. In my experience it’s best to watch it as you read along and fill out a character sheet as you go along
I am going to make my own campaign with some ukrainians and some americans so i just need a quick tour of what dms do and how to play as a character. So it would be great that a person who has experience in dming runs the game.
I’ve been DMing since 2016, is that sufficient?
Can you be a bird in DND?
Let’s move this to DMs to keep the channel clear
There are a few races of avians or birdfolk, but explicitly being a bird would be the realm of either homebrew or a druid using the shape changing ability
Does anyone have a DnD campiagn i can join 😭 🙏
This is not the channel to ask, either look in #looking-for-dm to make an ad for yourself or check out the DMs ads in #looking-for-players
Can you be an animal specifically? Like a bear?
There are bearfolk, as in more humanoid bears? Again, for explicitly a bear you’d be looking at homebrew or druids. Or being a were-bear, but that’s a little different and should be discussed with DMs
Thank you for the information
And I believe bearfolk are a third party resource as well
So you can only be humanoids?
Typically, yes. As I said, third party content, homebrew, and the druid ability to polymorph can all get you into non humanoid forms.
How often are their Play by post Campaigns?
Not terribly often, and they get snapped up pretty quickly when they do come up.
I might not be able to get into many campaigns then sense I’m uncomfortable with vc tbh
Do you have any experience with D&D before now?

Oh yeah I already read that
I searched through it and into the stuff I needed to know
May I send you a DM? I have an offer but don't want to clog the channel with unrelated affairs
Sure thank you
Sorry to bother but does anyone mind helping me understand combat a bit better? I'm a new DM and I'm trying to make sure I understand everything
What parts of combat are giving you trouble?
I'm writing down monsters on note cards and when I look at the descriptions on the websites, there's always this thing that says "+3 to hit" or something similar on the actions. I was confused if that meant ignore the AC of the players or something else
+3 to hit would mean that you add a +3 to the d20 when you roll to attack. It wouldn't ignore AC, they just get the bonus.
Ah okay okay, thank you. I've been trying to figure that out for a while
does anyone wanna be a dungeon master
me and m,y freind wanna start a champeign but we dont wanna be a dungeon master
I think there's a channel where you can make a thing and request one?
i cnat type in it
Hey guys, where can I read about legendary actions? I've been watching dnd runs and heard that about a strong villain. I can't find it in the rulebook I own. I can find definitions online, but I'd like to find it stated in the DND books to understand it as is
Those are described in the Monster Manual.
If you want to expand your search outside this server, you can find play-by-post (PBP) games on the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search PBP or play by post as keywords using Discord's Explore Discoverable Servers function!
Hello! What is the best way to get into dnd? Should I just find a group or learn everything myself first?
I think there's a lot of space between those two things, and that might be what to aim for. Personally, I think you should try to learn as much as you can prior to joining a game; it's more courteous to not put the onus on your eventual DM/group. Plus, it increases your odds of being invited to a game!
But don't feel like you need to know every rule and contingency before trying to find a group.
As for getting into the hobby, there's no best way. Some options:
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/directory/category/dungeons-and-dragons) just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.)
- Or play the demo (https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en).
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules).
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.

It's what the channel is for!
Okay I’ll check out the resources and get back if I need to! Thank you!
I've been told joining a campaign thats already started when your a new comer is annoying, is this true, I've always been a bit unsure about it
That varies from table to table. Some folks would have no issue. Others would be annoyed if someone just got invited instead of the table agreeing as a whole.
Ahhh
Outside of this discord are there any good ways of finding a group? I've always wanted to get into dnd but I'd rather stick to the same people everytime
I've saved the link, I will 100% check it out when I have a chance
Is there anything I should know before I do join a group though?
I'd recommend not expecting the group to teach you everything. Do some homework yourself prior to try learning the game, even if you don't get everything.
Be someone folks want to play with. Be willing to communicate about problems rather than letting them fester. Those are some of the top-level things that come to mind.
Ah ok, I'll watch some videos before I go sleep
Thank you, do you mind if I add you?
I don't add folks I haven't met personally. No offense!
Ah ok, I thought I'd ask before I sent one
Thank you, it was super nice to meet you
Likewise. See you around the server, I'm sure!
See ya
Hello
This might be a dumb question but does baulder’s gate 3 relate to actual dnd? I’ve played it a lot so I don’t know if it gives me a background to work with

Is it bad i wanna try to find a dm that could do a short dnd thingy so i could try it out to see if i like it
BG3’s mechanics are largely based on 5e’s, with changes made to make the game run better in a video game format. Additionally the game is set in the Forgotten Realms, which is the “default” setting for 5th edition. If you’re already familiar with BG3 you’ll have an easier time learning D&D, but the video game isn’t a good replacement for learning the rules.
Those would be called “one-shots” which are typically single session games. If you wanted to look for games using this server, #looking-for-players gets one-shots posted at a decent frequency
Awhhh once I finish watching the guides and videos, I hope my dreams of becoming a sausage wielding baseball player isn’t ruined
Is Roll20 friendly for newcomers?
I would say the platform doesn't do a great job of explaining itself, but once you've seen a tutorial or two it's not difficult to get started. It's also free, so there's no harm in setting up a game as a test environment.
Roll20 isn't completely free. It does cost a good amount of money if you want more stuff for it
I would recommend Owlbear Rodeo. It's 100% free
Sure about that? https://www.owlbear.rodeo/pricing
It does depend on what features you value. Personally I get more use out of being able to set up multiple scenes to present to the players, which the free version of Owlbear limits, compared to dynamic lighting and other features. #third-party can tell you more about each and other virtual tabletops (VTTs) so you can find the right one for you.
I just like owlbear Rodeo better than roll20
Could you also explain me one thing please? Whenever the item's being pressed, it rolls some dices out, obviously, but it gives 3 values like that:
20+4 | 25+4
Short sword (+6)
8
Piercing
What do these values mean?
That looks like it's making an attack. The first two rolls are the to-hit, and the sheet is set to roll with advantage automatically.
Then it's reporting what the attack was with, the damage bonus, the total damage rolled, and the damage type.
The total damage is 8 units?
Yes.
Thank you very much
If you're on roll20, then you can mouse over those to see what they roll, what they rolled, the calculations.
hi everybody. i wonder, if there is a free version of the 2024 rule book as pdf?
There is a free version of the rules on dnd beyond
oh yey, ty
is there a rule, which says i gotta use all 2024 or can i pick some, as i like?
cant find a free version. mind i ask you for a link?
Generally, if you're using the 2024 rules to build with, you use the 2024 rules for everything. Unless the feature comes from a source that hasn't been reprinted in the 2024 PHB. Great Weapon Master? Reprinted in 2024 PHB, use that version. Fighting Initiate? Not reprinted, use the Tasha's Cauldron version.
Free Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
i see. thanks in advance
ello
Hi, Everyone, I probably wasn't this intimidated by a game ever except maybe Hearts of Iron 4. I have a guidebook, I know a tiny bit about the rules, but I how do you reckon I can start playing, I know no one who plays the game IRL so most likely confined to online/discord, any suggestions ?
Or someone to answer my so many questions, haha
Online is fine. Groups play in all manner of ways: voice, video, even text. There's a section here ( #looking-for-players ) where you can find people recruiting for their games.
If you've got any particular questions, ask away.
Can there be a game where it's literally me and the DM ?
There could, but they're not typically the kind on offer. You might get lucky and strike something up with someone around here, or you could try putting an advert up in #looking-for-dm and see if anyone responds.
Okay, that's good to start with
I can't post anything on the #looking-for-dm, am i missing something ?
Ah, sorry. There's a bot that handles those. Type /looking-for-dm in this channel and it should pop up with a form for you.
It's actually /looking-for dm
Well actually just start with /looking-for and then select dm

Hello
Greetings.
hello again
Hello
Welcome newbies!
Hello all! I'm trying to get into DnD and am hoping to find a new campaign to join. I don't know much so I will need help getting started. Let me know if anything like that is available.
Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules. While it can be nice to find a DM that is willing to teach newbies, it’s most helpful if you can meet them halfway or further to ease their burden.
Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice. After that, try finding a game! In this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). Otherwise fellow user iamrazorwing has made a guide to using as many resources as possible to find both in-person and online games.
You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
Thank you!!
#looking-for-community And I am a nooby student. Will work on time schedule later.
Can wizard learn spells of other classes from a scroll? e.g. - can he copy Cleric's Revivify from a written form to a spellbook? Or is there no way he can do it / no way it can be written in a paper sheet?
pretty sure if your not multiclassing you cant, but also dm may change this
Only spells from the Wizard spell list but your DM may homebrew to allow spells from outside the list
In the 2024 book the fest magic iniate would allow you to use cantrips and I believe a first level spell from a different list
Or use wish
If you’re looking for a community, you’ll find them in the channel you linked to.
hey can any1 help me w dnd i want to get to know more abt it i hope som1 can

Hello
Is Dragons of storm wreck isle a good campaign to start with as a dm? ( I don’t have the starter kit)
My kids played this once and now obsessed and want to play at home. I think I'm in over me head, can anyone teach me the basics of playing a wizard, bard, rogue, and fighter? Mainly in combat please. I bought Dragon of ice spire peak to play.
do you know the basic rules? do the players know the basic rules?
start from there, with the "playing the game" and "combat" sections
Yes, we've played one mission, but the more videos I watch about how spells, bonus actions, rogue, etc work the more lost I feel.
Like, a one or two round of combat with each character would help me immensely.
in a nutshell:
players each turn have an action and a bonus action
not every character has a way to spend their bonus action, but if they do, it will be stated in a feature to take a bonus action
players also have a "reaction" - their character may perform a reaction under certain triggers. a character can only perform one reaction per round (e.g you use a reaction, you can't use another until the start of your next turn)
Yeah, that's what I'm unclear of.
Like, why is a rogue useful in combat if he's sneaky? How should I reach my kid how to use him in combat
rogues, for example, unlock the "cunning action" feature at level 2, where they can take the dash, disengage, or hide actions as a bonus action
but other classes don't have this feature - dash, disengage, or hide is an action for them like normal
Their characters are all level 2
alright, so the rogue has cunning action then
Is there anyway to play a single combat online and walk me through these things?
the rogue tries to get in sneak attacks when they attack to deal extra sneak attack damage
sneak attack is a feature listed on the rogue class unlocked at level 1
rogues in combat are pretty simple:
try to get sneak attack -> sneak attack. Dont be an easy target
You know how to strike subtly and exploit a foe's distraction. Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack roll if you have Advantage on the roll and the attack uses a Finesse or a Ranged weapon. The extra damage's type is the same as the weapon's type.
You don't need Advantage on the attack roll if at least one of your allies is within 5 feet of the target, the ally doesn't have the Incapacitated condition, and you don't have Disadvantage on the attack roll.
The extra damage increases as you gain Rogue levels, as shown in the Sneak Attack column of the Rogue Features table.
_
cunning action is useful for triggering sneak attack (hiding, so the enemy can't see you and thus you gain advantage on the attack, triggering sneak attack), or for having increased mobility and freedom to pick fights
in practise, this means you either try to hide behind total cover and then attack from your hiding place with advantage, or you target someone who is next to an ally.
So he should should be attacking someone who is already being attacked? Then he'll have advantage or a 2md attack?
wizards are like swiss army knife casters, with their rituals and spellbook. squishy (usually) but versatile. pick a couple of damage, control and utility spells to be ready for lots of situations.
standouts at level 2 for beginners would be Shield, Magic Missile, Firebolt. the rest can be picked pretty much to what sounds interesting.
neither adv or a second attack. its just a way to qualify for sneak attack damage if an ally is within 5 ft of your target
And how do I get those spells? when I created the other characters there was a list, I dont see one for the wizard. Does it just get all and I pick during game play?
under spellcasting in the wizard section, its explained
a level 2 wizard would have 8 level 1 spells in their book
@storm flame there is actually this "dndbeyond tutorial game" that might help you get the ropes of playing some classes
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
one of the available options is a rogue
it's pretty simplified, but good for the basics
hello anyone wana play dnd using roll20

Hello peeps
What parts you struggling with
If you have someone grappled, they have disadvantage attacking everyone but you, and they also can't move unless they escape the grapple right?
That is correct - see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#Grappling
This first thing I must clarify, which is important for you to know, is that there was recently a new rulebook update. This happens once a decade, and it takes a while for everyone to switch over to the new (2024) book.
Oh wait - so a bit of clarification on the grappled condition:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#GrappledCondition
The rules may be different between the old (2014) and new (2024) book, and your questions will be answered with the assumption that you are using the new book unless you state otherwise
I'm using the new one
Perfect!
I'm just hazy on pretty much all of combat
I'm trying to understand grappling but keep getting different answers
Howdy
When you make an unarmed strike, you may instead choose to grapple the target. They have the chance to immediately shrug off your attempt, which the rules (linked above) go into more detail on. If they do not succeed, they are grappled. This means they cannot move, and they have disadvantage on all attacks, unless they target the creature grappling them.
And escaping grappling?
They must use an action to make an escape attempt. The difficulty for doing so is detailed in the rules
Also the way it's determined if they are grappled is a stenght(ath) or dex(acrobatics) contest between target and grappler right?
@lucid spear
No
The creature being grappled must make a check against the Strength DC of the grappling creature to prevent it from being grappled
A strength saving throw to be specific
So that's 8 plus whatever the strenght of the grappler is right?
So is proficiency always applied?
If you were level 1, yes
13
Bit frazzled been learning this all day
I’ll be honest, I was a bit confused about part of monk with its unarmed strike but what you’ve said has helped me. Since I’m half asleep I won’t start questioning too much but it’s just trying to slowly learn.
An unarmed strike is a melee attack made using your body. When you do it, you can choose to damage, grapple, or shove.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#UnarmedStrike
so how does hp scale as level up let use a fighter as a example
Each time you level up, you gain an additional hit die. The size is based on the class you’re leveling up. For fighters, I think it’s a d10.
Then you either roll the die or take the average, rounded up (which for a d10 is 6).
Then add your Constitution modifier, and increase your max HP by that amount.
thanks alot
hii
hiii
how are you?
im good hbu
im good thnx 🙂
great 😁
How is everyone tonight
Doing good! You? 😃
Welcome newbies!
3.5 was my first time playing a ttrpg
Peep the pins then for the 2024 free rules. In my experience 5e should be easier to learn than other D&D editions as well as both Pathfinder editions.
Hii all
Yeah I'm returning to 5e after playing starfinder and other systems. I can play in those systems fine but as a dm I want easier rules so I can focus on the story and setting rather than figuring out how many times I need to 60 Degree turn a starship in space combat and all that lol
hi jason 🙂
I'd rather cut my teeth as a dm on 5e rules. I've ran 5e smoothly before and I'm liking the new 2024 phb
i love 5e :3
I'm still really new and I'm searching out for a oneshot to work with 🙏 Any basic notes and tips I should keep in mind gameplay wise?
U can use Pinterest to gather monsters for d&d
Ellooo
my players are coming across a shadow dragon next session
i love rping cool monsters
Hello guys!
Excited to be here.
I'm new to dnd
Welcome to the hobby! 😃
Which sub do I go to talk about dice and vendors?
Probably #merch-and-dice
Hiii I'm new there never played had a friend to explained me some of the stuff on how to play etc etc didn't create my Chara but have some ideas if someone could help me plz
Hey myka! Same here! 😄 never played before but I'm so curious about it.
Just realized that DnD exist in 2024, never know in my whole life that DnD is exist and is a game. Wow
I knew about it but couldn't really make time for learning and playing yk 😭
Thats great that you know about it (≧∇≦)/ maybe I will never playing it, so if you have time, you should play it Myka and tell me the stories!! (✪ω✪)/
-anw im sorry my english is not really good :0
Welcome! Did you just need general help getting started or did you have a specific question in mind?
general help
But more especially creating my Chara I'll be better understanding how to play directly on the board I mean better than reading the book
You might find a DM willing to work with a newbie to guide you through the rules and character creation step-by-step, but you’ll have better luck finding a group if you come in knowing a bit how the game works. The free rules linked in this channel’s pins and #learn-to-play are relatively short (compared to the PHB) and you don’t need to memorize everything. I’d recommend going through at your own pace, making a character as you go along and using this channel to ask any specific questions you might have
I also highly recommend using D&DBeyond for character creation, as they have a step-by-step builder that has the free rules integrated already. In addition, the character creator has a quick creator function to expedite the process.
Helloo :) I really wanna get into dnd and I was wondering if the starter/essentials kit was useful? i know basically nothing and like none of my friends play😭
There arent any clubs near me like in my school or nearby libraries there is a game shop but it’s intimidating cuz its full of grown men…
i have the players handbook
The starter kits are a very nice way to get started playing D&D. I haven’t personally played them but I’ve heard that they can be better for newbie groups as opposed to newbie individuals. You have the PHB already which is probably better in your situation, so I’d recommend checking out #find-a-game for help finding a group to play with.
Okay! tysm omg <333
I assume based on your school comment that you’re <18, so you may take a little bit longer than usual to find a group. Some groups don’t explicitly advertise beginner-friendliness nor age requirements so I recommend asking if you’re ever unsure.
Tyyy
So do I have to buy these expansions to play the races
I think thats my main question
Lancer has been the only ttrpg ive played so im used to those expansions only holding off on GM related stuff
If you want to use D&DBeyond, yes. Otherwise you can see if your group has someone with both the content you want and a Master tier subscription.
However, if you’re doing in-person games or have access to a physical copy (i.e. personal ownership, local library, etc) you can use those for a physical sheet. I believe the official recommendation for transferring physical 5e content to DDB is to create the needed content as private homebrew.
Ah I see tyty
Actually
Anyone here big into Lancer?
Jumping into DnD for the first time and im not that sure what im going into
How different does the combat feel
or the progression
The combat can feel a little slugish compared to lancer but you also have a lot more options in a character then in Lancer.
As for progression, it feels a lot different then Lancer. A D&D character has a lot more moving parts in it then making a build in Lancer. You can optimize sure but it won't feel the same as in Lancer simply because you have a much tighter action economy
hello ^^
Thanks!
I'm still figuring it out😅
Hello friends and fellows! I was interested in DnD for a long time and finally decided to join in! Yesterday I had a small session with my partner and used Barden(?) as a class. I also mixed spells and stuff together, making me really weak in a fight too TvT Is there anyone who could help me out through the processes?
hello everyone
Hayo
New to dnd i was told to find a campaign called Curse of Strahd to start off said good for beginners how would I find a campaign doesn’t use just speech? I’m way to shy to try any in person dnd meetings
Hi! Is there any game that I could spectate? I'm an absolute beginner and really wanted to learn DND
same
Hi! So im new to dnd, for a few years now ive wanted to start getting into the hobby but i never knew anyone in my area who was interested in it so i didnt try reaching out to start learning it, i know base stuff like rules and how to game works but i'd really like if someone could teach me or let me shadow them as i learn better from that instead of reading :))
To be honest, I'm not sure why someone would suggest Curse of Strahd as a beginner campaign for either running or playing
But if you want no speech at all, those are usually labeled play-by-post, though they're rarer games
Otherwise, if you'd be fine to talk, just not in person, there are plenty of online games too
I have one on monday you can spectate on. Thursday too but I'm not sure if that's going to happen this week
New! Absolutely clueless xD
I may have been intrugued by the concept, added with watching the fun movie, and also dipping into writing and world building so I wanna learn more abt this
Hii, I saw stranger things and I thought dnd looked cool, but idk where to start, can anyone help me out?

Hello, and evening (I’m at GMT+8) I am looking forward to join a new-guy-friendly club to join. If it is available, I prefer Mondays or Thursdays. ( thx for letting me post here)

uuugh I feel so embarrassed I completely messed up creating my first real character three times in a server to the point I left after getting too anxious 🤦♂️
That's okay and nothing to be embarrassed about! 🙂
Messed up how? Anything we can help with?
Hey everyone! I'm new here and making my first character on the beyond website, I want my custom character to be a frog wizard but can't chose frog as a species, should I pick human and just use that as a Disguise Self spell form?
And can I even do that?
They just had a bunch of rules and stuff and it got overwhelming, I do know the basics in regular dnd though
Yes you could do that - but always run it by your DM and group you're playing with as it may not make sense for that particular campaign or setting.
Understood
If it becomes confusing ill just make my character a human that thinks they are a frog
im lookin for a game to join
Or play a druid and wildshape into a frog is always a possibility...
Read #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group/game.
You'd have to have DM permission of course but there is a frog humanoid for d&d called a grung.
It's on the ddb marketplace under one grung above. I think the species is like $5usd and proceeds go to extralife
Oh yeah - here it is on DnDBeyond's marketplace: https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/category/SRC-00060
You can upload them to a site like Imgur and link to it, provided you explain what the link is.
What are you trying to illustrate?
so i know what d&d is and ive seen it played before, but my friend invited me over for october 11th to play with some others.
recently ive started watching the anime Baki Hanma
i found a picture of baki hanmas stats if he was in d&d but its not a character sheet
problem is 1
the stats are basically accurate so its high level and 2 i need a starter character
through trying to develop the character on my own ive questioned if its possible to have an exclusively grappling character
Are you referring to this Reddit thread? https://www.reddit.com/r/Grapplerbaki/comments/11vo2rn/i_converted_baki_into_a_dnd_monster/
That statblock is for a monster, not a player character. They're built differently, even ignoring level differences.
You can definitely build a grappler character. How effective that'd be is another story. I've never done it myself, but the folks in #character-discussion may have some tips.
thanks

hi im new to dnd i would love to play it my self whit my wife and who ever is up for it . curently i cant even find where i can build my character and use it for when playing also to add items and remove stuf ( same as hit points) ( character sheet )
if you go to a website called D&D beyond you can create your own character
oke ill try it there thank you
How can i send me backstory here, i need someone to check it out and see where i can improve
You can share a link over in #character-discussion.
just figured out that your stat numbers tell how much you add to what you roll
rolled 17
str 23 is +6
23 is the str of what i did
speaking of i need to fix that stat for a starter character str 23 is busted
It’s impossible to roll a 23 using the official rolling method, have you read the basic rules section on rolling for ability scores?
so i may or may not be referring to these stats
but when i made it a lvl 5 char berserker
forgor to fix the stats
got the abilities ironed out though
ill figure out what to get rid of later but yea
thats why i said 23 is busted for str on a character in general
but especially due to the fact i am using it for a new campain
needs to be more down to earth
Quick question, so Im being offered to be a werewolf in game and Im tempted to take it cause it sounds cool
But Im a druid so I kind of can transform
So would I still be able to wild shape and be a werewolf?
Can someone dumb down DND for me? I’m super new and everything is very VERY confusing.
Big fantasy world create cool characters join a socially awkward group to do awesome adventures
Or make a cool fantasy world and invite socially awkward people to play it
Cool 😎 Now I just have to learn how stats and character sheets work 😨
Easy solution force UR friends to do it assuming you have some
I don’t have any friends who play dnd 💀 it’s okay I’ll just be the guy in lobbies named fart and pour all my stats into strength or at least that’s how I think it works
It doesn't work like that sorry 😞
NOOOO 🤧
Itll be easy to remember if you go on dnd beyond and mess around with it
Thats how I learned
Okay 😍
You like strength builds right?
From the looks of the messages at least
Make a fighter or barbarian
Probably? I’m not sure, I just want to mess around and have fun. 😭
Are you using the "Player Characters as Lycanthropes optional rules in the Monster Manual?" If so then it'd be up to the DM since 2024 Druid's WildShape makes no mention of if your class features carry over, and 2014 Druid specifies that your features carry over to WildShape "if your new form is physically capable of doing so"
Have you looked through the Free Rules yet?
cool thanks!
So I know like absolutely nothing about dnd but have been really wanting to get into it for a long time now. Its not really popular around where I live so i turned to the internet. Anyone know where I should start when looking for a group or like creating characters? Or literally anything? 💀 Id really appreciate it

I was busy using a character creator although not sure if I did it right 😭
I just wanted to make like a really hefty cat
Are you using dnd beyondL
Trust me just make your own it easier
Alright 🤧
Never use a premade bc then you’ll have to learn all of their stuff and it’s a hassle
Dnd beyond guides you through step by step making a character
Guys can I just like make a talking steak with a monocle 😔 or like a really stupid joke character
You could
Depends on how serious the dm is tho
Do you have to make your sheet super specific or like just bare-bones
I’m far too lazy to write that much. 😭
It doesn’t need much, the only thing you really need to write is height and weight most of the time
Oh okay cool 😎
The other stuff is for people who are in depth
Ultimately D&D is just you and your friends telling a story together, and it works best when everyone’s telling the same kind of story.
Basically
With the power of friendship 😍
If it’s the right kind of story for a talking steak, then go for it.
😂
Thank you guys, I’m gonna go make Pepsi-man now.
I was not expecting that name
Hello world
Welcome!
#find-a-game has instructions for finding a group here on the server.
And #learn-to-play can get you started with the game itself.
Thanks I get a little turned around in discord servers with lots of channels sometimes
You are also free to ask questions here! Are you new to dnd or just the server?
Pretty new to both honesty, I've played a tiny bit in a one shot with pre built characters but getting started feels a bit overwhelming
Yeah, I've made a few characters but don't really know how to run them or how to build as the progress. I like coming up with character ideas but figuring out how they work in the game and what they do or should do in the gameplay is where I get bogged down
Feats, spells, cantrips, items, voodoo, weight, skills, alergies
It all gets very complex
Some classes are definitely more complex than others.
Yeah it can seem like a lot at first
Anything with spellcasting is going to take a lot more study.
Yeah, part of me is drawn to bards and Rangers but then my dyslexic illiterate brain wants to avoid the complex spellcasters
That's why I play fighter
Then people tell me fighters are better rangers than rangers
Ehhhhhh that's a lie
And then (no offense fighter mains) fighter seems boring
And I'm a fighter 💀
Archer* not necessarily ranger I guess... I like bows
Yeah, Fighter can make for a pretty good archer.
I agree, not putting down fighters at all I just don't think I know how to make the fighter interesting yet
I play fighters more like differently to others but fighter is supposed to be a starter class they still are powerful just not as interesting as others
More of a personal critique than a jab at fighters
But they wouldn’t have as much going for them outside of archery like ranger would.
I mostly play lawful good characters like clerics and paladins
It's mainly how you shape a fighter is what makes it interesting
It's lore to how it became what it is basically
Paladin sounds fun but I definitely am in no position to be a leader 🤣
Yeah, that's the bit that I get hung up on
Paladins don't have to be leaders they can be evil it depends on the god they follow
Fair
Clerics are more like leaders than paladins
Ah, I had heard it the other way around before
I tend to play the leader in most games lol sort of just happens
Well I view it as priest and royal guards situation
Then that probably suits you
See I think I'd like to play with people who actually know what's going on that can kind of carry a bit and help in the progression... I am very much a learn from doing type of person
But it's been a while since I played in a game, I'm mostly getting back into dnd by DMing for my friends
Ok going back to fighters the one I have right now is a half orc boxer from a Mexican area and lived in the underworld he is a underworld boxer this shapes where he grew and how he would act
This is a interesting fighter right?
I'm trying to create a game now but I'm still deciding on the setting and researching stuff since I'm new to being a DM
It's how you play a character which is what makes it interesting
You should read books and try to mix in irl stuff to add to your story
Mythology horror stories eyc
Etc
A bit yes, I like the background and giving them a history
Did you have any specific questions about ranger abilities, then?
Glad you see the fighters in a new light
Thanks
Try to look at classes in a new way that suits you and not there typical stereotype this will help you play all classes and have fun with them
I was doing that with sci fi books because I was going to run starfinder but complex starship combat had me a little intimidated lol plus I was getting a bit of fomo with the new 2024 phb
Not specifically for rangers abilities but I was curious if there were some kind of "created character" format that not only setup the character but also was set up through the leveling process so that in between levels you aren't stuck making a bunch of additional decisions. What skills to take ect... does that make sense?
I love the eberron setting so I might run eberron but I've Also been reading the Tal'dorei reborn book which is set in Exandria. The critical role setting
There's a lot of story's and genres for example all DND are Dystopian technically you can add Dystopian books to it like a society of people who have cameras all over a city or a painstaking corruption that's destroying the world slowly
There’s definitely fan guides on the internet for all that, depending on what you’re trying to build.
Awesome compare the two choose which one you like or combine both into a exciting new world
I just don't like to hold up the game every time we level sitting there trying to figure out what to do with the character
My friends making a ranger that has a bear companion and they WIELD a massive crossbow he's still coming up with lore and other aspects but so far its pretty cool
That sounds pretty cool
He's going to ride the bear like a horse well shooting the crossbow.💀
I had a bunch of ideas for different characters a while back but no idea how to bring them to life and no games to utilize them in so...
It's fine to hold up a game but if you want to be prepared for leveling you should play a marking game where it's not based on XP and based on what point of the story your at
You can gift those characters to friends who want a cool character but don't wanna make the lore
One was a pirate captain (bard) who stole the siren song from the mermaids and used his shanties to motivate his crew and defeat his enemies.
That's awesome if you find a DM whos doing a pirate themed adventure you can play it or gift it to someone else who's playing a pirate based DND session
Yeah, that would be fun
I would invite you to my game but it's a really small group and I'm still figuring the details
I also just enjoy walking contradictions like:
A bard with social anxiety
A giant dumb ogre that's a "rogue" that isn't sneaky
Do /looking for a DM if you want to find something you can join
No worried bud I appreciate it though
I made a orc bard/fighter who was civilized and he couldn't lie
I like that
He has a suit a tea kit and a violin as his bard music
He plays Beethoven
I gotta go see y'all later
Do I need to do that in a specific channel or does it matter?
Ok cya thanks for the help
Well I mean it's preferable but knock yourself out
Ok I just didn't know if I type that here or elsewhere
I'm new here always saw this game being referenced in movies and cartoons and i alway wanted to play but i do not know how to
I think typing it here is fine
hey guys just had a question, was wondering if anyone could help out
Welcome! Dnd is really fun
thanks i have a lot of reading to do :/
so does anyone know where the armorer subclass is from? my friend said it was from UA, and my host doesnt allow UA stuff so im just wondering where exactly the armorer is from
Yeah, do you own the players handbook? If not there is the free rules you could check out
no i do not own a copy of dnd
It’s in the book Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything.
Maybe download the dnd beyond app and get the free rules to read
so not unearthed arcana?
Nope not unearthed arcana
Unearthed Arcana is playtest content.
ok cool im going to check it out with my host then because im pretty proud of my armorer tressym lol
So while there probably was a playtest version of armorer, the final, official version is in TCOE.
done downloaded it,i have to admit i have heavy adhd so it will take me a while
got it thanks
worse comes to worst ill just go as a battle smith
It's OK I'm pretty sure I have adhd myself but I can sometimes hyper focus on something. I have so many unfinished books and games lol
May i dm you in private?
On dnd beyond app you can create a character it's pretty easy to use and goes step by step
Sure
Is there such thing as a solo campaign?
There are books that work as a choose your own adventure style solo campaign
This is a book I found for solo games but I never tried it myself
So you don't need a DM or anything?
Not with these styles of books. There is another one that I can't think of the name
But there is nothing like having a good DM to interact with I think
Gotcha, I was trying to think of a way to work through a game or a few sessions on my own or a small group to help me get started
If I want to get into DnD do I need to go out and get the players handbook? If so, do I get the new one or the old one?
You can start with the free rules for either
What's the difference?
Which you need would depend on what your future group is playing
They're different versions of the rules
Oh that's confusing
I haven't looked into an actual group; I just really got the curiosity about it and watched a couple youtube videos and whatnot
The original rules got revamped with the new rules
But not every group will be switching
Or how much they switch may vary
I have both the new and old rulebook. The other 2024 rulebooks will be coming out later (dungeon master guide comes out in November )
I picked up the new rules because I had a case of fomo lol but I really like the new changes. It does depend if your group will be playing the old rules or new
Yeah I don't think I'm ready to play a game much less run one as the narrator
That's why I recommend the free rules to start. No need to buy something before you're ready to play/know what you're playing
Dnd beyond is an app you can download and it has the free rules
So I can use these free rules to make a character and whatnot? Hopefully it at least explains the basics?
Yeah it does more than explain the basics, there is quite a bit of the rules in the free version. You just might not have as many character options when it comes to subclasses and stuff like that
hey all! fairly new to DnD, played a couple "campaigns" with friends but looking into getting into a long tern, weekly one. how can i make this happen to fill a void in my week? lol
open to DMs about the question, just looking for a where to go kinda thing lo
Oh ok so it is the same thing. I just have to play something probably more basic than if I were to have the full book?
Probably a good idea to play something basic anyway
#find-a-game is typically where you would go on this server.
You can type /looking-for-dm to fill out an application there
thank you
No worries, I always want to help new players lol
Yep basically, you might make a regular fighter instead of an eldritch knight for example
I always want to invite new players to my game but it's a small group for now lol
Guess I need to figure out what kind of character I want to play then pick a class to match the idea.
do i get in contact with GMs by dming those posts?
Yeah, it's like do you want to charge into a fight with a sword or greataxe? Or do you want to cast spells like fireball? Do you want to be able to heal and support your group? A few questions like that can narrow it down
I want to make a character that isn't super cliche but then again I'm sure everything has already been done, especially with my options.
My first character was a pretty cliche lawful good Cleric but his backstory was that he was a slave to an evil empire until he managed to escape. He had slave marking tattoos that he had to keep hidden, they went up his arms and around his shoulders.
Even though he was straightforward a Cleric I gave him a double blade scimitar. He had the travel domain so he was later able to fly.
Eventually at high level he became the chosen of his God and slave tattoos changed to holy scripture.
Then he had holy glowing tattoos. He started cliche on paper bur through playing he became quite unique. My old dm still uses him as an npc that appears in games with other people in other games
So I wouldn't worry about being too cliche I think the character will grow with your adventure and as you learn the game
( I played 3.5 dnd for this character not the newest version)
Fair point and an interesting concept.
Is it frowned upon to draw inspiration from other media?
Absolutely not lol it's encouraged I would say 😃
I'm always looking for inspiration from other media
Inspiration is totally fine, and I'd reckon pretty much every character is inspired by something else intentionally or not!
The trick is finding something that correlates to the available options.
Can Wish cast low level spells as if they used 8th level slots, or they have to remain the same? E.g. cast a fireball that does 13d6 damage.
My initial feeling is you're replicating (say) a level 8 fireball. But #dnd-rules might know more.
if im proficient with smith's tools, could i craft a breastplate and sell it, even close to its value 400gp? whats stopping me from being rich?
Time
how long?
the essence of my question is, u can craft a lot of high value items with smith's tools. so can i easily earn gold using it?
Multiple characters can combine their efforts toward the crafting of a single item, provided that the characters all have proficiency with the requisite tools and are working together in the same place. Each character contributes 5 gp worth of effort for every day spent helping to craft the item. For example, three characters with the requisite tool proficiency and the proper facilities can craft a suit of plate armor in 100 days, at a total cost of 750 gp.
You'll need half the value in materials, and can accomplish 10gp of work per day. Work is complete when you reach the list price for the item, so a 400gp breastplate takes 40 days. Here's a bit more: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1788-lets-explore-the-crafting-rules-in-the-2024
PHB page 187
The real question is, why does this character go on adventures and risk life and limb?
Also this. You can settle down and become a blacksmith, but that pretty much means retiring this character and making a new one
so its not exactly practical or ideal for an busy adventurer
is there a tool you would recommend for a self sustaining eldritch knight adventurer? (was thinking herbalism kit for potion of healing)
can i leave out calculating how much movement characters have? i dont know how to do it yet and it seems exhausting lol. i just left it out when i play with my sister since its just more fun for us
Movement is defined by the species/race. It usually only matters if you’re managing combat and need to determine if someone is within range or can move to a spot to be within range.
Does a tabaxi with a lions head make sense
Yes
We have the leonin species which is more lion-based than tabaxi
But yeah - flavor is free as they say
There are many reasons why an adventurer might have smithing experience, the core question behind Mr. Smith and Danilla is why they’re adventuring instead of smithing. Your goal was to make a lot of money specifically by using your tools. It’s not necessarily that smithing tools are impractical for adventuring, it’s that it’s impractical to be an adventurer if your stated character goal can be accomplished w/o having to adventure.
To be thorough, adventurers may need smithing experience to repair equipment, craft during downtime, and more. Including possibly making something valuable that may later be able to be sold. But their focus is usually something else in some manner, otherwise they’d be in the safety of cities using their skills for a job. Perhaps smithing doesn’t bring in enough gold, perhaps you have debts, perhaps you’re searching for a really rare metal (keeping with a money/smithing theme).
Random question um;; if one wanted to look for a dnd group irl, what places/areas should I go to??? Back at my old area, a card shop was also a dnd spot, but since i moved idk how to uh, look for a place like that?? Does that make sense??
Hobby stores, board game places, shops that sell model kits. Libraries and community centres.
So I'm looking at getting into dnd, and looking for a one shot or something to just get my foot in the door, I understand the very basics such as the rolls and checks, (combat i haven't paid much attention too) but want to know what I should look into before I play my first campaign, as well as character creation
Do I have to use dnd beyond for characters and stuff or is there anything else I can use with my own input?
https://media.wizards.com/2016/dnd/downloads/5E_CharacterSheet_Fillable.pdf
A blank copy of the 2014 character sheet with editable slots to fill out and print. Fully manual input, so it allows you to learn all the math behind your character concept.
The current free rules are here :https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Take a look at the classes, see what appeals to you, pick a species and background. Assign your initial ability scores using these numbers: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8, in the order you like. If you've picked a spellcaster your top score should be in whatever their spellcasting ability is, and try to avoid ending up with less than 10 in Constitution.
Then come share what you have in #character-discussion !
Putting a character together is good practice for the process. You can make as many as you like so don't worry about getting it perfectly optimised the first time round - just make sure they're at least competent for their chosen role.
Hello, may I know where can I find the official Druid Wild Shape stat block? I bought the 2024 PHB but I can't find in the Druid chapter, thanks for helping
It's not a stat block, you select a Beast which you can wild shape into, and use its statistics.
For example, a Rat.
Here is a link to the online Free Rules, specifically to the section on Wild Shape:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Level2WildShape
In the PHB, Beast stat blocks begin at Page 346
I am using the Ebook version is it in the Creature Stat Blocks part?
Thanks
Sort of, yes. As Auditor said, Druids do not have 1 specific "Wildshape" stat block. Instead, you're suppose to choose normal beasts to transform into, as explained by the rules in the druid chapter
Yes, I am confued as I am from BG3 and we used to choose a form in the game xd, thanks for helping!
Its important to remember that BG3 is only loosely based on the rules of 5e, and they made several changes to make it function better as a video game. Plus, BG3 was released before the 2024 rules update, so even the aspects of the game that were accurate to the rules may no longer be
I see, thanks
Hi, totally new to dnd here. It's crazy how Baldurs Gate was so popular they made a whole tabletop game based off of it!
no but seriously, I'm in deep deep irl trouble rn. Basically, I've taken up the job of entertaining my younger brother's friend group by being their DM (kids are roughly 10-13) but I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing! We started doing Hoard of the Dragon Queen and everything seemed like smooth sailing until the very first section where the town is attacked by the blue dragon and instead of fending it off like I was planning for, the party decided to hide in the bushes and kill every single person in the town and started worshipping the dragon. These kids are really morbid. I have absolutely no clue what to do now and would like some help figuring out how to adapt as a DM who's totally new to the game.
At this point, I'd recommend you copy and paste that message into #dm-discussion , as you're ultimately looking for advice on how to DM for a particularly chaotic group.
hey! what's the rule about repeating a check on failure? is it to the DM to give an outcome convincing enough that the players don't "think" they failed anything? what about something like prying open a door or anything for which you can directly observe the success/failure?
it got flagged for spam 😭
lmaooooo
try after deleting here i guess?
Yeah, Discord automatically blocks especially large messages sometimes.
If you trim it down like the one above, you should be fine.
There's some advice in the DMG for that.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/dmg-2014/running-the-game#MultipleAbilityChecks
ah yea ty, didnt buy it yet I'm waiting for the 2024 ed
If they have enough attempts and enough time, you can assume that a character spending 10 times as long automatically succeeds.
But taking longer won't turn an impossible task into a successful one.
And not every check can be repeated to begin with, but that's largely situational.
For example, if you try to deceive a shopkeeper and fail, he's probably not going to trust anything else you say.
did you let them choose evil alignments when creating their characters? it's not really suggested you do that especially for newer parties
if their characters aren't evil then try talking to them about meta-gaming and what it means to incarnate a character in DnD, it's all about consistence and trying to stay in character as much as possible
i didn't they just kind of did it on their own and i guess i didn't really stop them which i suppose i should have
yea exactly, as a dm i'm trying my hardest to give outcome descriptions that don't suggest success or failures but for some stuff I was curious on how to deliberate so ty!
Do you have a specific example?
yea it's important to check what your characters create! I would even argue it's the most important first steps, being explicit about what your players want and how the campaign will be run
if two of them want to play evildoers but the other is the most lawful good paladin ever, it's almost certain it'll be a mess
same if your expectations as a DM and the campaign you created aren't aligned with what your players want to do
like I said, prying open a door or a chest, pushing some big rock blocking the way... stuff that can actually be observed
if they said "I want to check if we're followed" and they fail on a perception check, I'm not going to say "oh no, you failed! I guess you don't see them?" but "You're pretty certain nobody's behind you" or somethnig like that
it doesn't really work with the rock example tho, like "you're pretty certain you successfully pushed the rock out of the way, although by some mysterious magic it's still in the way" lol
but you gave me the answer I'll go check that out
For the door/chest/rock, yeah, it would be clear they didn't achieve their desired results. If they wanted to retry, again, you could switch it to a time cost. "For the next minute, you keep prying at the door, making slow progress until it suddenly bursts wide enough for you to slip through."
In many situations, that time cost won't really matter.
But if they were trying to stop an imminent attack on the other side, that minute can really change things.
hm ty! great insight
They still get through the door, which is what they wanted, but that initial failure puts them at a disadvantage.
For being followed, yeah, the character ultimately wouldn't know if they missed something or there truly wasn't anything to see.
If the group's especially paranoid, that's where passive checks can come into play.
Those are a handy substitute for checks made repeatedly over time.
Instead of bogging down the game every two minutes for another check, their passive perception represents the average for those checks, and then everyone can focus on the story instead.
What does it look like to level up a character? Do stats change or is it just the progression of the subclass?
At the very least, your max HP will increase as well.
Full details here, though:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#GainingaLevel
Each class has a chart showing what you get at each level, which can include stat increases. For example: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#BarbarianClassFeatures
Thank you!
hi
Is dragons of storm wreck isle a good campaign to start as a DM who has never DMed before?
I've heard it is!
It's specifically designed for DMs who have never DMed before.

Hello^^
heya i just want some tips rq
what are some beginner friendly classes or are they all pretty easy to figure out?
Hiya, I'm new here. I'm still a newbie to D&D, only played Baldur's Gate 3 and a one-shot that wasn't 5e. I know only a few things about D&D but understand the basic mechanics. I'm hoping to find a group in my timezone to play. I also don't learn well by reading through lots of text. My favorite race are the Drow and I enjoy playing as Paladin, Fighter, Druid or Rogue. Pleasure to meet everyone.
generally wanting to know what i should try out
The martial classes (barbarian, rogue, fighter, and monk) have the fewest mechanics, so they're often recommended. But you can play any class if you put in the time and effort!
thanks for the tip!
The table here shows which classes have an Average, High, or Low complexity.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#ClassOverview
But none of it is unknowable. It just means you might need to do a little extra work.
So I say go for whatever interests you most. You'll have more fun if you've got a character you love.
#find-a-game is where to start the search for a group. While it's hard to avoid reading entirely in the hobby, you can find video explainers like Handbooker Helper and WASD20's Rules School (among others on YouTube).
yea ive been obsessed with necromancy for a bit for some reason lol
A School of Necromancy wizard might be up your alley, then.
yea my sibling who plays d&d has already suggested that
what are some reasons people would become necromancers in the first place?
I appreciate it! Thank you
other than stuff like undead armies
That depends on the setting that your DM is going to be running!
fair fair, ill have to think about what im personally looking for
They might be interested in death, maybe they want to bring someone back. Could be that they have a hard time making friends and are making their own. Sky's the limit tbh!
oooh those are some fun non-evil reasons to become a necromancer
bringing someone back i think is one im most interested in
One of the most fun parts about D&D is that even though the game defines for you what sort of powers and abilities you can have, you get to put your own spin and personality into it. Some necromancer themes I've seen in the past:
- A pragmatic and emotionless character that sees the dead as tools and uses them to complete tasks, since leaving them dead would be a waste
- A viking shamen that brings back fallen warriors as a sign of respect to give them another chance at glory in battle
- A warforged/robotic character that does not understand the difference between life and death, and uses their powers to try to understand humans better
- A tragic hero who's family died. They carry the souls of their family in a sacred object, and imbue those souls into dead bodies so that they can adventure together even after death
oooh
This weekend I am going to be hosting my first DND Campaign! I have done most of the preparations for the first session and I have an overall idea where I want the story to go. If any of you have any advice, i'd love to hear it because to be completely honest, I am scared stuff will go sideways
Oh, it almost certainly will. But if you know what's happening in the world regardless of player intervention and you know your NPCs motivations, you can hopefully roll with those punches.
Also, if you haven't done a session zero to discuss expectations and preferences, that'd be my biggest piece of advice! https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/929-how-to-run-a-session-0-for-your-d-d-game
I already did something similar apparently, I spoke with each and every one of them separately, helping them make their characters
It's also their first time playing DND
A session zero is a group discussion, and I'd highly encourage that even so. It lets everyone communicate about what they want and don't want from the game with each other, rather than only being through you-the-DM as a filter.
I also stand on group character creation, to improve cohesion.
Would I be able to host session 0 before session 1?
That's ideally when you do it
You have all of this week, so I think it could be done.
I kind of wanted them to not have eachothers characters beforehand
Keep it a secret basically
You don't have to talk about characters (but I think this is a bad idea, personally).
I wanted to ask about possible suggestions for the creation of a character, where could I ask about that?
Thank you!
Oh, thats fair lmao
But if you don't discuss characters, you can talk about the content of the game: what things they like/don't like, what sort of tone/vibe they want, etc. Even if they're new, you can lean on things they enjoy in other media and games.
Going forward I will make sure to keep that in mind, but right now is maybe too late regarding the characters
Thats most likely the only thing I will need to discuss during session 0
I am just so hyped for this weekend
I have so many ideas
That's awesome. But I think some folks forget that the game involves real people and real feelings; doing due diligence to communicate open and honestly from the start so that everyone has fun is one of the biggest priorities, in my opinion.
That's true, I want my friends to have fun. I have carefully catered an experience that will hopefully be fun for them
Didn't think too many details because I've been told its a no-no
So I just have major plot points
Leaving room for the PCs to shape the story is great, but session zero is a meta discussion to help make the game experience go smoothly. And that communication shouldn't be confined to one pre-game session either. It should be woven throughout. I end my ssessions with Stars and Wishes to solicit feedback so the game is always being responsive to the players (and myself): https://www.gauntlet-rpg.com/blog/stars-and-wishes
I will do like my current DM from another campaign is doing, ask for reviews of each session, see who had MC Syndrome
Ohh this is smart
That'd be another tip: You're a player too, so don't discount your fun.
Also, "yes and" is great, but sometimes you need to say "No." That is okay.
Exactly why I introduced an NPC that will be with the PC's all the time and I will be that NPC basically lmao
And I will kill that NPC when they meet the BBG
There are some players however who prefer to avoid spilling all of the details about their characters, especially if they have a big secret.
Hi there.
Not totally new to DnD, I used to play alot 30 years ago, the original Red boxed set and latterly the encyclopedia era.
I'm now starting to DM for the next generation 8-10. We have played the adventure begins alot and wanting the new stage.
I'm less keen on buying an adventure, I'd like to make my own and the mini players 100% will want to create their own character.
HOWEVER I'm unsure what rules to buy or follow. I know 3.5 has a loyal following, but the new 24 rules are just out. I'm happy to bite the bullet and go with those however know with first time juniors we won't need half the content.
Any advice? I think.when I joined before someone said the basics rules are all online for free somewhere and maybe start there?
Appreciate any and all help. Tag on reply would be good so I dont miss it, busy discord!!

Welcome! The bot post above has lots of helpful resources for you, including a link to the free rules. This server is specifically one for 5e, so if you're asking for help here, there's going to be a very large bias towards encouraging you to play 5e, but it is the largest and most popular edition of the game. The new rules help freshen things up and update some outdated designs from 10 years ago, but its still largely the same game. Though if you played 30 years ago, that would have been well before 5e first came out. So you'll be learning a whole new system too. That being said, 5e's greatest strength, and the reason it became so popular, is that it is by far the most beginner friendly edition of the game. Even more so now with the new update. The Free Rules do an excellent job of teaching the reader how to play
Thanks so much @fallen surge
Quick query, is 5e the 2014 version and now there's a 5e 2024?
Correct. Both versions of the rules are considered to be "5e." The changes between them are very superficial compared to what changed between 3e and 3.5e, so it wasn't right to call this a new edition. A few of the basic rules changed, but 90% of it was just changes to class and subclass abilities
Huge thanks, I feel like using basic to get rolling and playing. Get the little folk into gear and I'll invest in 5e even if that's just reading up and getting ready for that. I assume the basics are still a player manual and a DM manual?
The Free Rules is all you really need.
Ace thank you, I had a scan on line and that was the impression I got re class changes.
(Or the 2014 Basic Rules)
Thanks @smoky adder I was just about to ask the difference between the two 2014 basic and 2024 free!
The 2024 free rules are technically enough to get you started, but the 2024 Player's Handbook will have more character options for your players. The free rules only has 4 species and 1 subclass for each class. The 2024 DMG releases in November, and the 2025 Monster Manual releases in February so you can either buy the 2014 versions, or wait for those. But the DMG is largely just a collection of advice for the DM anyways, so you can run the game without it if you want
Honnestly this is superb help thank you. Best of both world I think, something to refresh myself with and get the guys playing.
Then I'll invest in PH and DMG when it comes out, probably be my festive reading present!
Massive thanks to you both 🙂

Welcome! The bot post above as some great resources to help get you started. Chapter 2 of the Free Rules (in the Quick Links) explains how to fill out a character sheet
And of course, if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them here. We're more than happy to help
What's the difference in a short and long rest
Duration and effects. Short rests are an hour. A long rest is eight hours. You can expend hit dice on a short rest, and only some abilities will be restored. A long rest regains half of your total hit dice and all PC abilities recharge, including HP.
2024 long rest now restores all hit dice.
What are hit dice? I thought that referred to which dice you rolled to determine your Hp gain on a level up
That is one of their uses, yes.
It's that but you also have a pool of hit dice. A level 3 fighter, for example, has 3d10 hit dice to expend during a short rest to regain some HP.
Hit Dice are both a stat and a resource. You are correct that they help determine your maximum HP, but you also have to keep track of how many you have (you gain 1 each time you level up) because you can expend them to heal during a short rest, and then get them back when you long rest
you can use hit dice to heal during rests
and you gain 1 hit dice + con max hp when you level up
Technically, you get the average roll of a hit die (rounded up) + CON mod max hp each level up. So 4+CON for a d6 hit die, 5+CON for a d8, 6+CON for d10 and 7+CON for barbarians.
Technically, it's a choice.
Each time you gain a level, you gain an additional Hit Die. Roll that die, add your Constitution modifier to the roll, and add the total (minimum of 1) to your Hit Point maximum. Instead of rolling, you can use the fixed value shown in the Fixed Hit Points by Class table.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/phb-2024/creating-a-character#GainingaLevel
You can roll or use the average.
(Though your DM might instruct you to use a specific one of those methods.)
hi I have a rule book so i know the basic rules but apart from that I'm brand new to D&D and I've been looking for a place to play it for a while. can someone help introduce me to the game and how it works? I know the basics but not that much

Hii! I'm new to dnd and I'm trying to make a character sheet but I'm really confused 😭
hi how to dungeon dragon pls
Hey im new to the playing aspect of D&D, i have a character sheet but don't have much/ almost any play experience and im looking for some beginner games
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
#learn-to-play has some good info to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
Hi I’m new to playing dnd online, how do I go about finding a group ?
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here.
See above ☝️
im not quite sure but do you roll for stats when you're making a character? how does it work?
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
I think the bot still links to the 2014 Basic Rules (though the abilities section is pretty much identical), so here’s also the same link to the 2024 Free Rules
Yeah, I’ve been slowly getting those updated. Haven’t got them all yet. 😅
ok thanks!
Could I send a picture of what I have so far?
You can send a link to a picture, sure.
Oh, I just realized there's no picture perms loll
I picked a sorcerer tiefling, and I'm mainly confused about the hit points and experience points
Also, what are armor class and initiative? 😭
what is a modifier?
Did you add your ability scores already?
yes i rolled a 20 dice for them! I’m not sure if thats the correct way to do it though
?tag new abilities

oh ok! I’ll redo that
ok so my constitution modifier is a plus 2
Perfect!
So every class starts with a specific number for their max HP, plus their Con. modifier.
Sorcerers have a base of 6.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#Level1HitPointsbyClass
So you’ll have 6 + 2 = 8 hp.
ohh ic so would that be my current hit points?
Both your current and your maximum
Then Experience Points is easy: a level 1 character doesn’t have any. :p
So you can put a 0 there.
oh ok!!
Temporary hit points provide a buffer against damage. They can be granted by spells, class features, etc.
would a sorcerer have an armor class?
ohhh cool
Armor Class (AC)
Your Armor Class (AC) represents how well your character avoids being wounded in battle. As a baseline, a character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier, but characters often wear armor and shields, use spells, or have class or race features to improve their AC.
When making an attack, the total of your attack roll is compared to the target’s AC. If your total equals or exceeds their AC, the attack hits.
Sorcerers don’t have any armor training, so trying to wear armor is a bad idea.
But a spell like Mage Armor can give you some added protection instead.
yeah i heard about mage armor before!!
okay so if my dexterity modifier is 1 my armor class is 11?
Yep!
cool! What about initiative?
Each of those is tied to a specific ability.
Persuasion uses Wisdom Charisma, Stealth uses Dexterity, etc.
So write the modifier for that ability next to the skill.
If you’ve got a +1 Dex, you’d add that for Stealth and all the other Dex skills.
Charisma
got it!! Tysm!
One more thing for skills first:
If you’re proficient with a skill, you’ll also add your Proficiency Bonus there.
how do I know if I’m proficient?
Your class and background will give you a few proficiencies.
ah ok!
You might get some from your race or a feat as well.
Okay!
A level 1 character has a proficiency bonus of +2, though.
So if you were proficient in Stealth, you’d add that +2 PB to your +1 Dex for a total of +3.
ohh ic!
pre-filling a Character sheet just to have it ready. SHould i even bother with the stats untill i know whether we are rolling for stats?
do you know what skills a tiefling traveler has?
There’s usually a little circle there by each skill, too. You can fill that in to track which ones you’re proficient in.
ohh do sorcerers have specific profiencies?
Sorcerers have this:
Choose 2: Arcana, Deception, Insight, Intimidation, Persuasion, or Religion
And then just read through your species and background to see if they give you any more.
okay!
Most characters start with 4-6 skill proficiencies.
Where are you filling it out?
If it’s pen and paper, I’d wait.
If it’s a digital character sheet, like on D&D Beyond, I’d at least start with Standard Array or Point Buy.
doing it digitally. Us totles have terrible penmanship
It’s easy enough to change later if needed.
kk ta
okay one more thing
what is inspiration?
Inspiration is often used as a reward from your DM.
It works a little differently depending on which rules you’re using.

hi friends! is this campaign no longer available on dndbeyond? im trying to access it but it says "This promotion is no longer available." https://www.dndbeyond.com/claim/source/lost-mine-of-phandelver
For me it says "View Content' and "You've Successfully Claimed this Content"
I'd ask in #ddb-support to see if this is still available
I still have it but I had purchased the adventure quite a while ago. The link says promotion not available
The original version is no longer available, but the updated and expanded version is:
https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/adventures/phandelver-and-below?pid=SRC-00113
This makes sense, I can still access the original though so I guess mine didn't get updated
Hey guys, I cant seem to figure out what I need to setup my first campaign.
I am looking to run my first campaign with my kids, however they would like to be lizardfolk and a minotaur which are currently unavailable to us.
Do I set them up as custom races or can I purchase a source book and a subscription to make it so they can select it? if so is that all?
I'm very new and have only been a player in the past, riding easy street haha
On D&D Beyond?
Assuming your kids don't need/want their own DnDBeyond accounts, I'd just buy the Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse and use that for the races.
yes sorry, on DND beyond, I have set them up with accounts already
Ah okay.
Then you'd need a Master Tier subscription to enable content sharing and that book I just mentioned.
Do i add them to a campaign before they can make a character that can select the fantastical races?
As I have the book shared with me from another campaign and I cannot create the races
They (or you) would need to build the character in the DnDBeyond campaign that has the content shared to be able to use it.
ah groovy
that makes plenty of sense
That clears up my confusion 🙂
Thank you muchly for your help!

I have a question
I am new to DND and am starting as a DM, I have no idea how to DM, and was wondering if I could have some help or listen to a couple groups DM in general till Friday

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Those can both help you out, and youtube can be a great help too
People love helping out in #dm-discussion when it comes to specific and general questions too
Alrighty, thank you, if I am still confused I will be back
What do the two numbers on a ranged weapon mean? Distance for Normal roll vs distance for disadvantaged roll?
Yeah thats it, its referred to as the normal range and the long-distance range
Perfect! Ok thanks!
I am creating a DND Campaign. And looking for players. I will be your dungeon master once you join
Hi, I’m just interested in joining a campaign, I haven’t played in over five years but I’m wanting to join one. I’m still kinda new at it but I’d appreciate it if I got a chance because I got some character ideas and I’d like to jus have fun
Sure
Remember this is discord friendly and campain friendly
Everything is made extremely easy for the players
Even character creation sheets
Hello I’m Briskly, I’m interested in joining a campaign, I like watching magic the Noah, so I kind of wanted to join a campaign to have fun in. (I would want a healer or sorcerer role)
Perfect we have those here for you at my campaign
How do I join?
Ik going going to create a Server for us. On discord. To make it extremely easy
Okay
Just note. This DND server is a video call server and YouTube server. Anything that happens in our campaign will be on YouTube. For our DND series.
Just FYI, it's against server rules to solicit for games outside the designated channels
No worries buddy I'm just getting people and then creating my own server. For discord.gg
(I’m DMing you some questions btw)
Will do
Where do you guys recommend I dump my points (lv3 monk)
For a monk you want Dexterity to be your highest score, followed by Constitution and Wisdom
So just max those 3 and ignore others for now?
It depends on how you imagine this character being. If they're a Master Oogway type of monk maybe some points in Intelligence would be thematic? Otherwise yeah you can mostly ignore the other ability scores as they dont impact your monk features

hi all. im new to the game and server, what would be the first step? ive always been interested in playing but never had a group. looking to start with shorter campaigns.

Do you guys know where to find a printable druid spell list, with a rough overview of the spells utility ? I need a reference sheet and dont want to carry a book ? (2024 version)
Best thing i can think of is to type em out on Word then print them
yea im on it, it will take some time then, its too hard to remember all the spells
Yea i use a pocketbook lol
When I get two features at say lv5
do I get both or choose from one or the other
like monk's extra attack and the stunning strike
"Both. We'll take both."
pog
What would you say is the more important form of the books to own if u want to be a DM? Digital or physical?
Value and importance is very subjective so ultimately you'll have to decide for yourself. I'm fortunately at a stage in life that I can afford both.
- Physical is nice for having something physically there, doesn't need electricity or a device to use, but it also weighs a bit - lugging physical books around can be hard (and may also damage the books).
- Digital is nice as it's always there at the touch of your device... but if power/internet goes down, then what? Also nice for not having physical weight. Can quickly search for things (but DnDBeyond really does need to improve search).
The trouble is content sharing. I'm hero class on DND BEYOND and don't know specifically how content sharing works. I don't want to deny my players bigbys hand for example because I'm poor, but also I can't afford to get the digital books whenever a player wants a new spell
And id only really get digital for the integration into the character system
Oh for DnDBeyond you or someone in the campaign would need a Master Tier subscription and then the DM of the campaign can toggle on content sharing.
That said, someone else besides you can pay for the Master Tier subscription and other players could buy the books they are interetsed in and with content sharing enabled, you would all be able to share that material with eachother within that campaign.
So only one person needs master tier?
Correct - to unlock content sharing only one person in the DnDBeyond campaign would need to have an active Master Tier subscription.
Awsum! And I imagine people will have at least one of the books collectively
Im the type of GM who makes binders and folders for quick access to my custom campaigns, and with the likelyhood of it being online, ironically there's no downside to the physical, plus easy quick access
Yeah. You can also encourage players that want certain classes/features to buy the book it's in - and boom now everyone's got access within that DnDBeyond campaign.
Id need a session zero for many reasons, so I suppose I can always talk to them about sending a fiver if noone has master tier
Thank you very much @echo kelp, may the necromancer never release their grip from you
Besides the 3 core books and Monsters of the Multiverse, are there any other supplementary books you all would reccomend? I'm mostly looking for additional gameplay content
Tashas and Xanathars are good for additional player options
Oh, Tasha's features Artificer. Neat! Maybe I could recreate one of my characters i never got to use
One grung above 🤣
im new entirely.
helloo
Ooo
So my daughter is the newcomer. I've ran her and her friends through parts of The beginner boxes to learn the system (Icespire Peak and Mines of Phandelver). I'm thinking about picking up Tyranny of Dragons for a long term campaign for them.
Any tips and tricks for that one before I commit?
We have the 3 core 5e, and just got the 2024 PHB...

Depends if you are comfortable using a laptop/tablet at your table. I now run all my games on my laptop using OneNote. The digital version of the rules allow me to quickly look up things if need be. However, if I am learning the rules for the 1st time, I enjoy reading the actual physical book.

Does anyone know where to look or what to look for when I am trying to search for gadgets the artificer can craft?
I assume I might just need to look at spells I am trying to emulate and make custom items but I was wondering if there was already a template in one of the books for something like tnt, smoke bombs, net launcher, grappling hook, etc.
Like tnt = fireball
Smokescreen would = darkness
Net launcher = hold person or monster depending on the net
All would require resources, gold, and successful rolls to work. But I'm trying to add in variety to my artificer
I got a question for anyone I am going to be a DM for my very first campaign with newer players me also being a new DM and player we all going into it together. I am letting all my players 4 in total have pets but they start small like a small bear cub and wolf pups stuff like that I plan on making their pets have abilities that help the players to make it fun for them like the rouge is wanting a dire wolf pup which I am perfectly okay with but I am trying to find one special thing to give each pet to make it where they have a ability to support their owner any ideas I got a druid wanting a bear cub a rouge wanting a dire wolf pup and a fighter wanting a regular wolf pup last guy is undecided so far none of them know of this yet I plan on surprising them with it.
