Ok thanks

#

Oh yeah I’m online so is DnD beyond a good place to make characters or should I use paper

echo kelp

Check with your DM/group as they may have a preferred toolset/approach to handling character sheets but DnDBeyond is fine to use and try out (and it's widely used).

lone stag
#

Umm, wtf is the reason that there’s only 4 classes without legacy

echo kelp
#

Do note that you'll be limited to the character options available in the free basic rules unless you've purchased the book on DnDBeyond or unless you're part of a DnDBeyond campaign that has content sharing enabled and folks in the campaign have additional books.

#

The new 2024 basic rules - as of right now - only have 4 class options. This is just a preview and is expected to grow with the release of a new updated System Reference Document (SRD) which will update the 2024 free basic rules.

What is passive investigation for?

smoky adder
#

Passive scores are purely a DM tool. They're not anything a player can ever choose to use.

#

But a DM could use them to represent the average of a check made repeatedly over time.

#

Or when simply asking for a roll might inadvertently reveal information.

#

I.E. asking for an investigation roll (unprompted) might clue players in that there's something there worth investigating

Not officially, but I have heard of homebrew and adventure modules here and there that make a pretty good attempt at it. I don't know any specifics sorry.

If you're looking for a system specifically designed for solo or duet play, #third-party could probably hit you up.

Read this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and check out Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). Those should help get you started. There are a bunch of other resources as you encounter new challenges as well.

obtuse vector
#

Well, observing games is one thing you can do. Learning off of other dms is a good place to start.

Always remember that you are the dm and what you say goes. It helps to talk to your players about what they can and can't do. Giving options is good as well, but don't let toxic players walk all over you either.

  • In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.

Hi all, I have a couple of quick questions. I'm completely new to D&D and have only been learning how to play for the past two days by watching some YouTube videos. I noticed on D&D Beyond that you can buy a bundle for both the physical and digital versions of the Player's Handbook.

So my questions are: Is the Player's Handbook the best place for me to start? If so, why would someone want both the physical and digital versions?

smoky adder
#

Some people prefer reading through a paper book, or just want it as a collectible.

#

And then still want the convenience of D&D Beyond’s digital tools.

short briar
#

So say I manage to find a group to play with online, having the digital version is helpful during play?

eternal crater
#

yeah so with the digital copies you will have access to all the sources the book provides in character creation

#

with physical, you won't

#

honestly if playing online most DM's will share their sources

#

so as a DM with Master Tier, my players can use all the books I own

wheat crystal
#

You can also use the free basic rules which are linked in this channel’s pins if you wanted to read the essentials w/o paying yet

eternal crater
#

Yeah I agree, I'd honestly wait... use the free stuff until you know you really like it

short briar
#

I think if I want to get started and actually play it will have to be online to start, I moved to Corpus Christi, Texas somewhat recently so do not have a friends group here, and from what I can tell, searching meet up etc there doesn't really seem to be active groups here to play in person.

Ok, I'll start by reading the basic rules and then try to make a character just to get in to the process.

eternal crater
#

DnD can be an expensive hobby, fortunately my players bribe me with free food for the books and service as a DM I provide lol

#

Have you tried facebook groups or gone to a local game/comic shop?

#

I've had luck with both in person and online in those places

#

"StartPlaying" is also a paid to play online site

short briar
#

I'm not so worried about spending the $60 for the player handbook with the digital version, I'm just unsure of if thats the best place to start. I'd like to gain knowledge before I try to find a group to play with so I know at least something first.

I looked at the events at the two local game stores and they all seemed to be for magic, which I also have never played. Nothing D&D related. FB I haven't tried. I'll chek there now, see if there is anything.

eternal crater
#

yeah the PHB is the best place to start

#

the DMG and MM are for the DM's so for players the PHB is the most important

eternal crater
#

welcome!

#

Might want to try the MtG event anyways... could find people also interested in DnD, I know my partner and I play both.

short briar
#

I've honestly never even looked at the game. I'll watch some youtube on it and see what's it about.

eternal crater
#

It's a fun card game... think DnD meets Yu Gi Oh

#

anyways the main thing is for networking, a lot of us DnD players at least in my area go to MtG events also

short briar
#

That's good to know. I feel like such a noob though, just started looking at D&D. I spent all my life as a pc gamer mainly playing things like Eve Online that moving in to TTRPG seems daunting! But I have the itch and want to see what I've been missing out on all these years.

#

Is there a pyramid of being a DM?

eternal crater
#

I like the Dungeon Dudes content

#

but that's more of in general than how to actually run

harsh fjord
#

Not especially. But worrying about designing a campaign before you've even done a session is probably cart before horse.

#

As an example.

eternal crater
#

My suggestion would be run a module for the first couple times or a one shot

narrow lintel
#

Well, I'm aiming to run a oneshot based on "Fight Club" movie,

I got the script ready but I'm still worry that the player gonna cook up some Billy Butcher diabolical stuff that could end the session in literally 26 minutes...

harsh fjord
#

Agreed. I've been DMing for three years and I still prefer modules. Game design and prep is a lot of work, so anything to reduce the workload is more appealing. I already have limited free time as it is.

eternal crater
#

my DM burnt out and wanted to play.. so I ran a couple one shots... now I'm the DM running campaigns LOL

#

Any tips to cover situation and roleplaying character?

harsh fjord
#

What do you mean by situation?

harsh fjord
#

Right, but that doesn't clarify what you mean by "cover situation."

eternal crater
#

I mean when prepping I just give my NPC a personality type

#

"angry at life bartender"

#

"flirty old wench"

narrow lintel
#

I've seen some beginner DM having trouble with that...

eternal crater
#

ah I mean for the most part you can always lead them back

#

just throw in clues

#

through your NPC

#

but if they just want to explore I allow it, throw in a random encounter and on the bodies they find a clue leading them back

harsh fjord
# narrow lintel Like they just somehow fell of the rail of the original mission then just wander...

For one, players will probably go a little off the rails, but part of the unspoken social contract is they'll pursue the adventure you prepared. And you can talk directly about this above the table and prior to playing (what we call a session zero, to discuss expectations and such).

Two, you probably won't be good at rerouting right away. I'm not sure there are any tips beyond doing the best you can, like if the clue was originally in place X, it's now wherever the party is going. Be flexible.

eternal crater
#

yeah session 0 is very important

harsh fjord
#

As for roleplaying characters, you can be minimal about it (like Celt said, just a description of disposition and job). You can also create motivation: if you know what someone wants, you can use that to determine how they'll act in almost any situation.

narrow lintel
#

Oh yeah, anothet stuff,

Like in my country, people tend to play DnD with Rol20 but my laptop is weak for that site,

Then I switch to Avrae and Owlbear but sometime I have troubled with the Avrae keep saying "Need to like your account" while I was linked into it

Any suggestion?

harsh fjord
#

Also, not every NPC needs to speak in dialogue. You can just say, "The person you stop points you in the proper direction."

Well D&D is a game so if you go in focused on that - that you're meant to have fun, to have your characters do sometimes silly/stupid/awkward stuff (within reason), and work together to tell a fun story... does that help you feel better about trying it out?

stoic frigate
smoky adder
#

It's definitely possible to play D&D by text.

echo kelp
#

You could also look for games that are play by post (PBP). These tend to be slower paced (as in you need to write out what your character is doing rather than vocally explain it) and thus a little less stress on the "how do I look/sound in front of others" that other D&D games may be.

smoky adder

You might also consider joining what's called a One Shot -- a game that lasts only a single session.

Since there's no lasting consequences, those can be a good low-pressure way to give it a try.

Prepared spells are basically the selection of spells you have available to cast each day as long as you have spell slots to cast them. You usually get to select what you prepare from the larger amount of spells you know (except for sorcerer, whose prepared spells = spells known)

Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the linked Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules. While it can be nice to find a DM that is willing to teach newbies, it’s most helpful if you can meet them halfway or further to ease their burden.

Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice. After that, try finding a game! In this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). Otherwise fellow user iamrazorwing has made a guide to using as many resources as possible to find both in-person and online games. Being blind may make the game a little more difficult, but plenty of people with disabilities have fun with this game. I would be upfront about it when you apply to a game so your DM can work with you to make the game more enjoyable (i.e. braille character sheets, more tactile maps, aiding you with rolls, etc).

You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!

wheat crystal
# finite sphinx Right now I have that my character is kind, social, and love to explore things a...

In my opinion, that’s perfectly fine! I would say to give it depth, think about how these personality traits would mix and manifest in the narrative. For example, your character is both sociable and untrusting- how would that work out when adventuring? What would their inclination to explore have them do in a dungeon or during downtime?

As an aside “untrusting” as a character trait can be finicky to navigate as your character does need to be part of an adventuring party, which requires some level of interpersonal trust. As with any flaw, make sure it contributes to the development of your character while not being a hinderance to your party.

With that quality specifically, a good way to go about it is to have your character be skeptical in a way that benefits the party. You’re untrusting, so you always want to investigate deals and mission details to ensure your party is never in a bad spot. You might spend extra time prepping defensive tools to avoid traps or to protect you/your party in the event of danger.

Hello, I just got started recently on dnd, my experience is comprised of BG3 and divinity playthroughs, I wanted to get started but I'm a bit lost, I see gms posting recruitment for players but it's always for experienced people (leveled characters) so I don't think I can join, should I just wait for a beginner friendly gm post or should I look elsewhere, thanks

OK newbie here but i do know some basics not much though. You see I was thinking of doing it like everyone else was doing it and making a character, learning the game, etc but It didn't feel... unique enough so here I think I need to know what is possible. You see i was thinking I would be a being of power and its form being the Divine General Wheel and their limitation were the DMs themself of course my role of the sorts were to be a hefty hand for the DM to be a enemy, ally, a member, or maybe even a lore point in their world meaning many forms are at my disposal but people will see the Divine General Wheel over my head or neck or back when I take form or take possession of a physical thing or living thing. Still I will be stuck at level 1 until I get proper experience of everything and even when am in a form I can talk to the DM and they of course have almost complete control over me (oh no) they can make me know what happens next can order me not to do anything about it or not say anything about it but still there are limitations to their control like i can leave their realm whenever i want to and go to other realm with the different DM. I thought a lot about this because I think it would be fun to be something like this and have lots of history behind my back in the future.

# slim juniper OK newbie here but i do know some basics not much though. You see I was thinking...

Your idea is largely outside of the scope of the rules and intended narrative of D&D. The game is a collaborative story-telling RPG, which I would check out #learn-to-play . In general there isn’t a way to accommodate your character idea for a few reasons:

  • Being a “being of power” (i.e. quasi-diety) is generally too high of a powerscale for a character, let alone a level 1. With this concept you’ll also run into a high risk of “main character syndrome” where your backstory is presented as significantly more grand and/or important than other PCs.
  • Introducing a new divine concept into a D&D setting or the DM’s homebrew setting
  • Switching between ally/enemy/NPC “lorepoint” (unsure what you mean by that) when the game is about adventuring in a party with fellow players.
  • Having possession abilities
  • Having a DM have primary control over your character
  • Unlimited planar travel
  • Using the same character across different DMs at will (generally it’s 1 character per player per campaign) and you usually can’t just port a character from one campaign into someone else’s at will.

Given all of this, as before I would reset the drawing board and check out #learn-to-play to figure out what D&D’s all about. It’ll have a link to the free basic rules as well as introductory information on what’s possible as well as give a vibe as to the typical fantasies the game plays into.

# dim herald Hii!! I'm completely new to dnd. I have heard of it for a long time and the idea...

Charisma is the “social” stat so to speak. It dictates how well you can navigate social encounters with skills like Persuasion & Deception. At a broader level it’s the stat that represents your “force of personality,” a term used to describe how powerful your sense of “self” is as it connects to the aforementioned sociability as well as in a more magical sense to the universe at large

Like is there a limit to where it becomes... too much? Or like can I do whatever I want with the character? Read #find-a-game carefully. You use bot commands. For example let's say you created a Discord server and want to create a D&D community to chat D&D and play D&D games together. To advertise that server here you would type /looking-for in any discussion channel (or #find-a-game) and then select community. The bot will give you a form to fill out. Once you fill it out and submit it, it will create a post in #looking-for-community and attach a thread to the post that you can use to provide any further details, clarifications, or corrections.

Have the free basic rules nearby for reference.
Snacks are good.
Taking regular breaks (snacks, drinks, bathroom, and just general checkin - e.g. everyone having fun?)
Make sure to discuss expectations and boundaries - what's appropriate player and character behavior in the game.

#

Also okay to pause the game to quickly look up a rule - but also just make a ruling and move the game forward. Can alsways circle back to it after the game to decide how you'd rule it next time.

For in person games you can:

  • Visit tabletop game shops
  • Visit local conventions
  • Visit your local libraries
  • Visit your school
  • Search Meetup for local play groups.

Online options in this server:

  • Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
  • Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
  • These posts are by DMs looking for players.
  • Tip: Show that you took the time to read the posting by mentioning aspects of the campaign you find interesting.
  • Tip: Show that DM fun isn't an afterthought by asking what makes the game fun for them.
  • Check out #looking-for-community to find community-style games like West Marches, one-shots, and more
  • If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
  • You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.

** Adventurers League**

Other options

Overall I am biased and tend to recommend Adventurers League the most to new players.

This server doesn't have VC, nor do we host games here. We do, however, have #find-a-game as a tool for finding groups. You might find use out of the channel to ask posters (in #looking-for-players , or another relevant channel linked by find-a-game) to spectate. Alternatively, there are plenty of D&D shows, podcasts, liveplays, YT videos, etc on how actual games run (liveplays are probably the most accurate imo) that you can watch in your spare time to get the vibe.

What it mean for heavy role play

fallen surge
# mossy crystal What it mean for heavy role play

Campaigns that have "heavy role play" are ones that focus on story elements like the characters, plot, backstories, relationships, etc.
Campaigns that have "light role play" are ones that focus on non-story elements like combat, dungeon crawling, resource management, finding treasure, etc.

mossy crystal
#

Oh whats is in between

fallen surge
#

These aren't defined terms. Just general vibes. Someone might say "this campaign has a mix of combat and role play" or something like that, to indicate that its in between. No D&D game would ever have no combat or no role play. Its just a way to define what aspects of the game interest you and what your campaign will focus on a little more

true musk
#

Yup. This is why communicating expectations and preferences beforehand is so crucial.
Some don't mind if one or two sessions don't include combat.
While others prefer having at least one combat encounter every two sessions.
These details can make a difference in group compatibility and player engagement.

D&D Starter Set: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle

The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:

Embrace the shared story.

D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.

It’s not a competition.

The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.

Be fair and flexible.

Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.

Modify the adventure to suit your tastes.

Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.

Don’t worry about mistakes.

Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

Becoming familiar with your character's features and mechanics helps from the mechanical side of things.
Taking notes can help with staying focussed or invested in the game.
Then the rest of it is building up emotional/social intelligence to know how to connect with other players and help keep the group running smoothly.

You can also search the server using dm advice and/or dm tips as keywords. You'll find plenty of good suggestions!

harsh fjord
#

More player tips:

  • No one is the main character, so try to cooperate with your fellow players.
  • Similarly, the DM is not your enemy. Try to respect and lean into everyone’s fun rather than privileging your own.
  • When there’s a problem, in game or out of it, communicate to solve it.
  • Be mindful of others’ boundaries and your own. It’s a more active, intimate form of entertainment, so be respectful when people say what they don’t want to deal with.

# gloomy marlin Hi! I am a newwbie here in the community! I'm not sure how to play or how to sta...

Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules.

You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!

pine sierra
# lyric fjord wow! did you know about DnD before? like do you have to learn everything or can ...

All questions are welcome! In the last 8 years I've played maybe 10 sessions at most. Mostly pathfinder. At least 1 session of dnd 5e.

I would say I have solid base knowledge for a new player - comfortable enough with a character sheet to make my own character without thinking I'll make too many mistakes. Decent grasp on combat and rolling for checks and ect and a players action economy (stuff that as a new player, I think is extremely core to know, it's how you actually play)

I got invited through here! I made a post in #looking-for-dm and after a couple of days someone messaged me.

They're kind of a vague, in-between question for both the channels.

I'll say that if you're looking for elemental type powers, both Druid and Sorcerer are probably your best bets.
As for blood, there aren't really any official blood magic themed classes or subclasses in DnD.

scenic flare
#

what is encumbrance?

smoky adder
#

It's a variant rule that adds penalties when you carry weight above a certain amount (relative to your Strength score).

scenic flare

wich sorcerer skill profiency do i choose?

fresh fable
scenic flare
#

thanks

smoky adder
scenic flare
#

yeah but no idea wich one does what

scenic flare
#

i don't really understand the arcana one

#

what's it's use?

wild cedar
#

Is what the player’s handbook tells us. Could have some more creative applications, as well

scenic flare
#

yea, but, how is that usefull?

wild cedar
#

Your character might want to learn things, recognize things, and so on. Knowledge is power. Could make decisions based on that knowledge

#

Could be the key to learning a detail that helps you overcome an enemy, help your allies, etc

scenic flare
#

maybe it's because the meaning of recall that i know is not the one of the context

#

the recall i know means like calling again or going were you were a few seconds ago

wild cedar
#

Perhaps You know it, have read it in a book or have been taught something by a wizard tutor, but can you remember it on the spot?

#

You make an arcana check to recall the information and thus make use of it

scenic flare
#

how curios

#

i like it

wild cedar
#

There’s a lot of creative potential to it; maybe more subtle and not always as straightforward as like… an athletics check to push a stone door open or something

scenic flare
#

what does cantrip mean?

timid locust
#

Recall meaning remember

scenic flare
wild cedar
#

It’s a real word. From dictionary.com,First definition:
“a magic spell; trick by sorcery”

scenic flare
#

cool

#

so i have spells and cantrips?

#

i don't quite understand the diference

wild cedar
#

Cantrips are spells that don’t have a spell slot/spell level. You can cast them infinite times, basically

wild onyx
#

Cantrips don't have a daily limit. Spells with levels do. You need to rest to recharge them.

scenic flare
#

that's cool

#

do i need like a campfire to rest?

wild cedar
#

Not necessarily, though taking a rest can often involve a situation like that. You’re not actively fighting/traveling

#

Taking a breather (short rest) or actually getting sleep etc. for 8 hours (long rest)

scenic flare
#

are those 8 real hours or in game hours?

wild cedar
#

In game 😄

what is an acolyte?

fallen surge
# scenic flare what is an acolyte?

The real life term refers to someone who assists in the performance of religious practices or worship. Like a priest’s assistant. In D&D, acolyte is one of the backgrounds you can choose during character creation, and it grants certain benefits based on this choice

scenic flare
#

is there one that's like, an aprentice or a just graduated one?

fallen surge
#

D&D backgrounds typically fall into more vague categories. They are meant to represent the general feeling or vibe of your character’s history. The specifics can be personalized by your backstory

scenic flare
#

and, what is sage?

fallen surge
#

Sage is a researcher or scholar.

scenic flare
#

#

do i choose the 2014 one or the 2024 one?

fallen surge
#

Depends on what ruleset you are playing with

scenic flare
#

wich one is the more used?

fallen surge
#

Well, the 2024 rules only came out earlier this month, so not everyone has switched over yet, but it’s probably better to learn the new version

scenic flare
#

but, the one i choose afects when i join a game?

spring rock
#

This will be up to the dm

fallen surge
#

More like the other way around. What game you join will determine what rule set you use. You can try to specifically look for games that use one rule set or the other, but nothing locks you in to one specific choice

scenic flare
#

i ask it because it make me choose one to create my character

fallen surge
#

Yes that is true. But any character you create now is just for testing and learning the rules. Generally speaking, it’s better to make your character after you join a game

#

There is nothing wrong with making a character right now for practice. It’s quite fun, I make them all the time. But it’s important to understand that some DMs have special rules for how you can create a character for their game, and sometimes the story and plot of their campaign will affect what type of character you want to make. Any characters you make ahead of time should be kept vague and you should understand that adjustments may need to be made after you join a game

scenic flare
#

can you help me with that?

i cant send images

Anyone here uses the players handbook?

echo kelp

Yes?

Many folks do - it's kind of the next useful thing when you're ready to move on beyond the free basic rules.

slate bane
#

How many character sheets are in the box?

#

Like the sheets to create the character

main fulcrum
#

1 at most

#

The expectation seems to be that you'd copy it to make your own

slate bane
#

Oh

#

Are you sure??

#

Cause a friend of mine Who i Lost contact with that played with the players handbook had them but they werent copied

#

Its the 2014 edition

main fulcrum

slate bane

Hey super duper quick question for anyone experienced here! I’m making a new character for a campaign that’s gonna be a tabaxi, but I’m having a difficult time trying to find a class that suits my gameplay/interests. Can anyone possibly give me some advice on what classes I should lean towards?

Also does anyone have a pdf for a character creation page? Lmao

spring rock
#

well for part two you asked at the perfect time lol

dense fog
#

LMAO is that what the link above is?

spring rock
smoky adder
#

What kind of class would suit your gameplay/interests?

dense fog
#

OHHH word alright. Sorry im like relatively new to this server lol. Not roleplaying though

spring rock
#

hey if a mod's asking here, nevermind 😉

warped sigil
#

How do i use the character sheet like how to edit it?

smoky adder
#

Depends on what you're using to make your character sheet.

dense fog
# smoky adder What kind of class would suit your gameplay/interests?

I was interesting in Ranger under either swarm keeper or horizon walker and had a few ideas sketched out for how my characters behavior can correlate to their class; but I heard some people say rangers weren’t the best and to lean towards a rouge class since I’m doing a tabaxi but I wanted to talk to someone with more experience in the game

#

Also I have no clue if all dms take those classes lol

dense fog
spring rock
#

if you're using the new 2024 rules, it can literally be anything, because race/species doesn't grant ability score bonuses anymore

smoky adder
#

Rangers being "not the best" is a complicated subject, and often overblown. 😅

spring rock
#

yeah that's true too, do what you want, flawed characters are just as fun

smoky adder
#

For starters, there's like three different versions of Ranger that you could play.

hollow flax
#

Hi is this a channel for new people

smoky adder
#

Indeed it is!

hollow flax
#

Yay!

dense fog
#

But I do like the sound of race benefits being off. Kinda gives me more freedom with it!

#

without worrying about my stats going somewhere I don’t want them to be lol

smoky adder
#

The 2024 update is basically the same game, just with some new upholstery.

spring rock
#

yep. ability scores come from background now instead of race/species though

#

it really depends on who you're playing with.

smoky adder
#

Anyway, if Ranger is what sounds interesting to you, then go for it.

#

You'll have more fun playing a character that excites you.

spring rock
#

if you're going super character optiimization though, a Tabaxi would probably be good for a ranger, a monk, or a rogue

smoky adder
dense fog
#

Trueeee, but I’d also like a character that isn’t weak, and many people make rogues sound rather weak

spring rock
#

rogues can be super OP with sneak attack. They're not weak

smoky adder
#

"Weak" is also relative.

#

Sneak attack does add some good damage.

#

But rogues also bring in a lot of options that benefit you outside of combat, too.

#

A fighter might do better in combat by raw numbers, but doesn't have as many options outside of it.

dense fog
dense fog
smoky adder
#

Rangers are in a similar boat as rogue.

#

They've got a blend of weaponry and spells that can be used in and out of combat.

#

By contrast, Paladins also mix weapons and spells and probably hit harder than Rangers in combat, but they have fewer out-of-combat abilities at their disposal.

smoky adder
dense fog
#

I was actually looking at Arcane trickster, but what are their abilities? Isn’t it mostly controlling a large magic hand that can go invisible?

smoky adder
#

They're the only rogues that get spellcasting.
