Does chill touch immobilize?
Nope! Spells only do what they say they do.
. Until then, the hand clings to the target.
It says it clings to the target but that's different than earth grasp
but it says nothing about restraining or immobilizing them. It could be as small as Thing from the Addams family, clining to something, or large but ghostly and thus doesn't prevent movement.
Earthen Grasp says:
On a failed save, the target takes 2d6 bludgeoning damage and is restrained for the spell's duration.
Because Chill Touch doesn't say this, it doesn't restrain. Even if both spells are vaguely hand themed, their effects are limited entirely by their spell descriptions.
Nope, Cantrips can be cast as many times as you want between long rests. They're the "free" spells to cast.
Their damage or usefulness is weaker than a spell that costs a spell slot, but the fact that they're free makes them useful when you're low on resources
Hold on, there are established spells in the game?
There are plenty, yes
I thought the players can make their own
no. D&D has a list of spells that you choose from
Nuh uh
It's not usually recommended for players to make their own spells (known as homebrewing spells).
you could homebrew (make up) spells completely on your own, but the process is harder than you'd expect in that you have to consider balance in the game.
Classes have spell lists they can choose from.
I want to be able to summon saws
hey
Unfortunately, you'll have to refer to the Artificer's spell list for what you're able to cast
😭
Nuh uh. I'm making me a saw spell
I'm a fencer. I need saws
You're very much able to homebrew your own spells, but please take note that a new player with homebrew spells is considerably less likely to be picked by a DM.
As a newer player, creating your own spells is not recommended. It can be a great thought exercise.. but even if you do create your own spells and get into a game, that does not mean the person running the game (the DM) will allow personalized spells.
All I want is for the dm to consider giving me a saw spell
The easiest approach is to reflavor abilities, this is where you keep D&D's rules and mechanics the same but changed the aesthetics.
As doing so can allow you to bring character concepts to life.
For example there is a spell in the game called Mage Armor.
- If I were playing a wizard I would make this spell look like the wizard pulling the ink from their spellbook and throwing it on himself to create black inky armor.
- Whereas if I was a druid using this spell, I would make the spell look like vines wrapping around my character to form the armor.
Visually both look unique, but mechanically they both do the same thing as the spell specifies.
Is there a spell that makes an attack come out of the ground?
Like a bunch of thorns or something
several
Like the saw magic in cc
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/class/252717-artificer this is the current spell list for an Artificer..
There are a few, yes. I'd recommend looking through the Artificer's spell list to see what might work as a reflavoring option.
As mentioned earlier, Cantrips are weaker spells that don't cost any spell slots.
Oh, ok
Can an artificer make machinery out of metal?
Like if I carry a backpack full of metal scraps
Can I make them into a mechanical?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/spellcasting#WhatIsaSpell
gives you an overall breakdown of the types of spells
Artificers do not have any special rules or game mechanics for crafting things, other than what is listed in their class features
Have you read the artificer rules
https://youtu.be/ta-E8u2QM5w?si=5zWsXVRjLViuKH_X some homework for you a detailed video on artificers
Don’t worry there’s no test attached to this homework
Yeah I'm sorry I'm just new to the whole game
And I thought an artificer fits my pfp best
And I want my character to be my pfp
The fencer from CC
there is no need to apologize.. we have all been new before and it takes time to pick things up and get comfortable. But at the same time, it helps to give yourself a foundation of knowledge - like making your way through the Basic Rules, checking out the Artificer class details, etc
You might be able to get the flavour of that character just not a 100% copy
Reflavouring things to fit
Yeah that's what I'll do
Pretty sure his magic is extremely easy to replicate with reflavouring
Magic missiles that are saw blades
Do keep in mind that Artificer is by far the least beginner-friendly class in the game, and is the only one that is not included in the PHB or free basic rules.
Really 🙄 it’s a magic spell that can be used to fit many different things
Oh come on
I'll see if I can maybe be a mechanical mage
Or something
Yk what
Imma be a rogue
The spell "magic missile" does not fire actual ballistic missiles at someone. It just refers to a magical projectile. There is no explosion. The bolts from the spell do force damage to 1 target each
What is the best to start for a game (new player i just have read the rules)
And instead of magic I'll just throw saw blades
There is no class that is too complicated to learn as a beginner. You can play as anything you want. But the levels of complexity vary. As a general rule of thumb, the less magic a class has, the simpler it is, and the more magic a class has, the more complex it is. Classes without magic like Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue, and Monk are the easiest to learn
Yeah imma stick to the rogue then
Good choice, just read Sneak Attack and keep that stuff in mind
I will throw saw blades instead of daggers or somethin
Yeah seems logical
Yeah you can flavour it in whatever way you want
I will just generally replace all daggers with tiny saw blades
I booted up the dnd beyond app 10 mins ago and it's still updating sources
Nvm
It's finally done
If you need help bringing a character concept to life stop by #character-discussion
Yo, why do character guides cost huge amounts of money?
Effective rules development costs money, to say nothing of the artwork, binding, and the like.
what character guides are you referring to? I'm not familiar with anyting official like that that needs to be paid for
The ones in the beyond app
Those are sourcebooks and adventure books.
Oh
D&D Beyond does not sell guides. They sell additional game content
Ok
At the the end of the day the sourcebooks and adventure books are products.
And like any product, they need to be bought to support the creators of these books.
The rouge can choose the arcane trickster subclass at level 3.
The Arcane Trickster subclass is a rogue subclass that grants you access to magic
Do you mean like atomiton or golem?
Automaton
War forged?
Oh that would be the warforged or Autognome race then
Like an automaton made by some dead wizard
There are artificial races like the autognome and warforged, but if you don't have access to them, you can describe your character however you like. They just don't get any game mechanic benefits from your description.
And the automaton escaped and now is sentient
And I got a damn good reflavouring for bleeding
As in the magic from the suit of armor is pouring out
And dies outside the armor
To access either race, Warforged or Autognome, you'll need to buy the book they come from.
I'm tryna make an empty suit of armor that hold pure magic from some wizard
Accessing Content on D&D Beyond
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
Consider the following: I got no friend and no money
Then you'll need to homebrew things or flavor the free options
Gotta get a job or someone who has a campaign and is willing to share their material with you or a library
It's usually not a good idea to homebrew mechanics until you know what you're doing, yes
- Libraries have D&D books you can use.
- When you join a group, they will likely have content sharing via fellow players the DM.
But flavor is free. And depending on the DM, they may be willing to homebrew something for you
Also you can just stick to the free basic rules.
An elf wouldn't be that difficult to reflavor as mechanical, for instance.
- They need to rest for only four hours: that's the powered-down mode.
- They can't be charmed or magically be put to sleep: seems like just the sort of thing an inorganic life form would be incapable of.
- They can see in the dark. Also a viable augmentation: special lenses, if you will. Same with their Perception skill.
Then the abilities for whatever subrace you choose, of course.
The reason why homebrew is not recommended for newcomers is because it is similar to having someone build a new part to add to an engine before learning how an engine works.
- The part will likely not work as intended.
- It might end up breaking the system.
- You may find yourself spending a lot of time building something that already exist.
What elf? Wood elf, high elf or Eladrin elf?
Whichever you like. The things I mentioned are just baseline abilities for all elves. Subraces have different specifics.
They all have either magic or ranged bonuses
I want to be a rogue
And they're bound to nature
So use some creativity. That's all I'm saying if you can't get access to specific options.
Hi. What are the things i can do using reaction and saving throws? How many times can i use saving throw in a battle?
im trying to submit a Looking for players submission, but I did the 1-4 and submitted that and I thought it would let me do the Additional info but im pretty sure it just submitted the entirety
Then pick a different free race
iamrazorwing was just suggesting elves for the mechanics, which you could then flavor as something else
But none of them fit my magic automaton rogue character that I imagined 😭😭😭
You wouldn't have to describe them as elves at all. That's what we've been saying
Dnd doesn’t fit everything
You can also just create a different character.
when does the bot submit the "Looking for Players" Submission?
I believe it's nearly immediate?
Saving throws and reactions are something that something else triggers. Characters and NPCS don't necessarily choose when to use them.
For example the spell Sacred Flame forces the target to make a dexterity saving throw and take damage if it fails the roll.
Another example is when an enemy leaves your character's melee range, in which case it triggers your opportunity attack.
i didnt mean to submit it, but I think I did. I did the 1-4 thing and it has that little submit category and it sent the message but nothing popped up in the actual thread itself
It probably didn't go through, then.
how do I edit the 1-4 and additional information without sending it though?
or am I missing something
I have no idea. I never use the bot. #moderator-support can probably help out, though.
It sounds like you'll need to run the bot command again
It sounds like it didn't submit correctly
Alright then, because it didnt let me fill out all the boxes prior to it sending
pretty goofy
Make sure your Discord client is up to date - some issues can be traced to an outdated Discord client not playing nice with the bot
I see. But my problem originally was when I edited the boxes; it doesnt save it and I cant do the fifth box
Again it just means you'll need to redo the bot command and fill in the form - it sounds like it didn't submit.
When you're trying to make something something it vacuum, particularly when you have no frame of reference, it is going to feel restrictive and limiting when you try to make it with what you actually have access to.
That's why you take to time to learn what resources and options you have to work with at the start, then use that to creatively make something.
Basically the process failed and you'll need to retry

trying to figure out what adamantine armor to get for my T3 cleric & my T1 pally. both are healers, do i get plate for pally & chain for cleric?
Hey this is my first dive into actually playing DnD instead of just reading books..is there anyone around that could tell me where to start lol
and do i need just one piece? or adam legs, adam boots, etc.?
Armour includes all pieces.
Adamantine armor is a magic item and includes all pieces of whatever armor type you get
D&D isn't like a video game where you collect pieces.
This post here is a good place to start #dnd-newcomers message
ahh ok, so when i get the adam armor, i get it, done?
Pretty much.
Of course, magic gauntlets and boots will replace the armour's gloves and boots, respectively.
ahh good point didn't think about that
i'll keep that in mind tyty
Can I apply spells to my weapons?
Only if the spell says it does - two that I can think of are booming blade (available in the free basic rules) and green flameblade (Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide - SCAG)

Hey, im new to DND by itself and i'd like to both play some roles as dungeon master, and player once i learn!
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
These bot posts above can help you with DMing.

Hello, I was wanting to ask if anybody could help me with my first character sheet?
Real quick, some details, I'm not new to the concept of dnd, I know roundabout how everything works, I haven't personally played it, but I've seen plenty of videos of people playing (I also have a rule book for it.)
I recently bought the dnd "Essentials Kit," but I noticed it only really had the four classes (human, elf, halfling, and dwarf) but I wanted to use a Water Genasi. I know they're "recommended" but I personally like the Genasi's alot more.
I was wondering if anyone could help with setting up my character sheet?
Thanks!!
-Arty
The rules for water genasi can be found in monsters of the multiverse or a legacy version in the elemental evil players companion (free)
hello, is there anyone here that plays online dnd like Roll 20 or some other online ttrpg dnd campaign?
Oh okay, thanks!
👍
Thanks!
I’m making a whole campaign on roll 20 about climbing 50 floors in a tower. Each floor has a unique NPC, puzzle, and battle, with environmental elements and tons of replayability 🙂
Are you looking for players atm?
nice idea!
i was abt to ask the same thing
Cool
mind if I join? I'm still new to dnd. please take care of me lol
Hey, I'm a new DM and I have a question. When starting a new adventure, do my players have to be on the same level? Like for example, 2 of my players are lvl 5, 1 of them decided to make a new character thus starting at lvl 5, and the last player wanted to use another character he has lvl 8. Is there a problem with that? Do I allow the new character to start at lvl 5?
It's very strongly recommended that they are the same level
Okay, so what would I do in the scenario I explained?
Tell the player with a level 8 character to make a level 5 version of their character
So I’m a new dnd player I was wondering where I could find the stuff like dice and etc I need to start playing
online or rl?
Rl
well if you go to your LGS (local game store) they should sell dice, books and everything you will need
Fair point it’s 4:23am I didn’t think about local game stores havin it lol
yeah most likely lol, if you dont have any books, it might be good to get at least the PHB (player handbook). it tells you well how to play and what each class does among lots of other stuff
Is there anything else that would be good to get?
well for rl, not much i can think of. im a online person myself lol
How long have you been playin for?
tbh, not that long but now i know alot of stuff about dnd and other stuff, doesnt take too long
Well thank you for helping!!!

I can try my best to help and answer any questions 😊
Are there any seasoned mink players? I always had a thing for classes using staffs. But what I found online on YT always put the monk in a bad situation 😦
Hi there thank you so much for your time >.<
I know some stuff from the internet and I've read a few books about starting in DnD however I never got to use the knowledge as I never really found a group, I'm also an artist and I'd repay everyone with some artworks for the trouble of teaching me 🤧
Ofc! I love helping out people new to the game so let me know any questions you have or if you need help creating a character 😌
Would you be comfortable with adding me?
Sure thing!
Dice, note book, pencils, erasers, snacks all useful for irl games
Hey, monks are baller. I have played with groups where we always had one or two so I haven't played them as much as I like, but they typically are on the high end of damage per round (DPR) and are great support with stunning strikes. Additionally, their extra move speed helps with battlefield control.
I think a lot of people don't like them because it's low damage dice rolled very often as opposed to a handful of dice rolled once.
Any specific questions ?
I would love to dive into monk esp after the upgrades he's getting with the new PHB.
I'm looking into dice as well. How many dice would I need for a full monk set (upon reaching lvl 20 which will take ages but just out of curiosity).
I know that monks can use spears, javs, staffs (🖤), daggers and short swords.
I do agree with most YT videos putting Monks low tier in terms of power, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun playing a monk. They do have a fun playstyle, it’s just their powers have some unfortunate limitations. If you’d like my advice:
- The most severe drawback of the monk is their limited Ki points, which most of their abilities need to function. Be somewhat conservative unless you know you can take a short/long rest afterwards.
- They have great mobility, so use that to get out of dodge if a melee combatant seems too tough. Monks are typically squishy both in AC and HP.
- Your DPR will be on the lower to average end unless you only use (and have) Ki to use Flurry of Blows. Try using Tasha’s optional rules to get a dedicated monk weapon to improve your DPR until 11th level.
- Stunning Strikes can be great, but use it carefully. Monk’s save DC is typically low, and monsters generally have high Con saves (and at higher levels Legendary Resistance). I find it usually best to spam SS after the casters burn through a monster’s other defenses.
The Monks do seem to be getting a decent buff in the 2024 PHB so that’s something to look forward to. As for dice, you can get away with a standard set or use a digital dice roller tbh.
Thanks! But are the ki points not increasing with levels as from level 3? One PER level?
The usage for flurry of blows is one ki point or does it increase as well b
Hello folks
hello
The pool does increase 1 Ki/Level but its generally not enough of an increase to matter. A typical adventuring day will have more than 1 combat, and combats on average last ~4 turns
I started playing DnD, here to learn more
And that assumes you don’t need your Ki to use any other features like Step of the Wind, Stunning Strike, Patient Defense, etc
Welcome! You can check #learn-to-play or this channel’s pins for a link to the free basic rules!
I have alot to learn me and my friends play a more dumbed down dnd
I have gotten a hang of the basics. Trying to make my character better in the campaign I'm playing right now. I'm a dragonborn bard 🐲
Im a dragonborn monk
How to make a dragonborn more powerful. I feel I'm using more of the bards utilities
The Dragonborn have some exclusive feats, but racial abilities in general are typically less important than class abilities
Oooo. Got it
I'm thinking of taking paladin as the second subclass to make it a good combo
If you’re new I wouldn’t recommend multiclassing
Instead I’d recommend going Swords or Valor Bard to give yourself any desired melee utlity
My meele is trassshhh
we have #character-discussion if you want to get some pointers and advice on your refining your character, or #optimization if you want to really deep dive getting the most out of your character
Paladins are a melee fighting class. I’m not sure why you would want to multiclass into that class if your strength score is too low. But if it’s really low, you wouldn’t be able to multiclass at all. Each class has different requirements you must meet to be able to multiclass into or out of that class. For paladins, you must have a minimum of 13 charisma and 13 strength. Since you started as a bard, I would assume you already meet the 13 charisma requirement, but if you don’t have 13 or higher in strength, you can’t gain a level in Paladin
Which is probably for the best because as Star said, multiclassing is not a beginner friendly rule, and it’s highly recommended that you avoid it for your first character.
Two resources I'd put on your radar: this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and the first few videos of Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). His thesis is that running the game is easy (or at least easier than it's often made out to be) and fun, and his videos help folks see that for themselves.
You can also search the server using dm advice and/or dm tips as keywords. You'll find plenty of good suggestions!
I have my strength at 16 and charisma at 14. My wisdom is rather low which becomes an issue in arcana and stuff but there's other players who do it so I'm not very worried about it.
But I think it would be the best to not multi class as y'all have mentioned.
Ow boy, I didn't think I'd ever want to learn to play this game. Where do I start ?

Ty, I'll go and read ancient rules manuscripts now.
If you want to have enough dice to roll each attack without re-rolling dice, you'd need 2 of each (and two more d6 or d8 for staves) [Yay crits!].
Short rests are your friend
Thanks. I read somewhere that you'd need like 20 D10 for endgame monks xD kinda scary tho
Hi guys, I'd like my 11 years old son to get into the DnD lore before we start playing a game with him. I am woundering wich books series or book he should read first. He's a fast reader but I guess books with 100-200 pages would be more appropriate prior reading longer stories.
The Young Adventurer's Guide series is great if you just want a lore dump:
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/series/EJB/dungeons-and-dragons-young-adventurers-guides/
Buy books online and find book series such as Dungeons & Dragons Young Adventurer's Guides on PenguinRandomHouse.com
yeah, those are great. I read them to my 3 year old at bedtime
If you want more of a story, there's the Dungeon Club graphic novels:
https://www.harpercollins.com/collections/books-series-dungeons-dragons-dungeon-club
K good, I feared they where rules books
There was also The Fallbacks earlier this year:
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/721108/dungeons-and-dragons-the-fallbacks-bound-for-ruin-by-jaleigh-johnson/
Not sure what the page count is on that one...
Amazon says 290, so that might be heavier than you're looking for...
Random question, is there a playable merfolk race?
Triton and sea elf are the closest.
Water genasi, too.
just joined this server- i have no idea how to play d&d but im intrigued by it
Seconding Triton for extremely close to traditional merfolk!
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some info to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
i've made a character and customised it etc (human, paladin, all that kinda stuff), then i realised i have to pay to get all the stuff needed to start lmao
mainly cuz i know no one to play with
Technically, you don't need to pay anything to start playing! If you're playing online, the free basic rules give you all the information to get started, dice rollers are free online, and many of the virtual tabletop programs that groups use are free as well
ah okay thank you 😀
Yeah, human and paladin are both freely available in the Basic Rules.
Oath of Devotion paladin, specifically.
need to find people to play with then! (preferably UK people)
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
i dont have any adventures/campaigns too so that might be an issue too
Those are the DM's responsibility.
In fact, many DMs would prefer that you don't have access to those.
You are usually good with just the players handbook and often people are happy to share 🙂
ah okay thats good!
The basic rules have everything you need to be able to play.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014

It's got a lot of the same information found in the Player's Handbook (plus a little from the Dungeon Master's Guide and the Monster Manual).
But getting the full Player's Handbook will give you a lot more character options to choose from.
As will books like Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, or Monsters of the Multiverse.
thank you!
trying to find a group that is bst and allows my age group now!
just made a post looking for a DM, will check back later for any replies
might start watching critical role
It's also worth browsing #looking-for-players to see if anyone has a game you could join.
Yeah! It's often even better to be proactive about looking for games.
Remember that it can take a while to find a game that's a good fit for you. Be patient and don't compromise for bad D&D just to play.

The bot post above has lots of helpful resources to get you started
yeah definitely- hoping for a good bst, noob friendly DM game
Once you've taken a look at some of the provided materials, let us know if you have any specific questions. We're more than happy to help. That's what this channel is here for
What's the average time it takes someone to find a group
It really varies.
The more specific your needs, the longer it might take.
The more diligently you search and the more places you search, the more likely you'll find something to suit your needs.
It all depends on what you're looking for and what people are currently offering.
All the Indian servers are 18+ and none of the requests here match my timezone ( its always set for around 1 am)
Hey guys! I’m so new I don’t even know where to start. I’ve played Pathfinder before, but it’s been years. What’s a good “first timer” resource that I can devour?
#learn-to-play has some good stuff to get you started!
Yeah, underage players often have a hard time finding online games.
Mostly because adults are (rightly) discouraged from spending close time with them.
https://twitter.com/DesisNDragons they have a discord linked and looks to be a ttrpg community in India, found this for someone a while ago, could help you find something local
And this specific server is primarily US players, so common game times in the US probably won't fit an Indian timezone.
Is dnd an "old people" game lol
"Aahh back in my time me and my group used to sit and play dnd nonstop, no bathroom breaks, we were 5 years into the campaign when jimbo had to leave for college"
Nah, D&D is more popular now than it's ever been.
hi
But it did start 50 years ago, so there are definitely people who've been playing for a long time.
Welcome!
I joined it today, player requests are pretty slow, 1 per day, and today's request needed experienced players
Stranger things
huh i wanted to get into dnd for a while now
I have a whole guide for where/how to search for games you can find here.
so i dint really know how to pla-
#learn-to-play is a good place to start!
What is faith
What god you follow. You don't need to fill that in if you're not in a game yet.
Oh ok
Mostly because what gods you can follow will depend on the game setting.
Can't follow Lathander if Lathander doesn't exist in your game.
But if you had something specific in mind, like Lathander, you could simply keep it vague for now and write "sun god" instead.
Hey guys, how are you doing over here ?
I've created a inn map for the One Shot Wolves of Welton, but it is supposed to be... "Crowded". How do you guys manage to do so many NPCs at once ? What if my players decides to interact with one of them ?
How do you find sooo many images ? xD
- One: I don't bother with art for every NPC. I just use words.
- Two: I don't try to create every NPC prior to the party interacting with them. I might use a random rolling table to generate traits. Or base them on a fictional character. But they don't exist (besides being in the scene) until someone talks to them.
- Three: Make NPCs modular. Don't try to give each one information. Make a few and then use that info to inform whatever NPCs they do interact with. Like don't say "Person X knows the cave location." Make it "The second (third/fourth/whatever) person they talk to know the cave's location."
Do spells need to come out of certain spots? Eldritch blast and fire bolt dont specify how it is cast. For fluff reasons Id like to channel my blasts through my weidled weapon. Like feign attack and then it's actually a magic blast to the face
I get they need voice and somatic for those
If you really want a bunch of NPC art, folks online have created "NPC (token) packs." Just Google!
Alright, thanks !
I'll look it up
Organizations your character belongs to: a guild, a school, etc.
Generally you'd be leaving that part blank until you're going into a game and the setting has been defined.
Pretty much anything on page 2.
huh
Page 3 is just for spellcasters, so that might also be blank, depending on your class.
i picked rouge
So you won't need to worry about spells at the start.
okay
Im struggling on picking a name for my character without making it sound weird
Kieth
Alr
Found 2 games at once after 3 days of searching lol
This server has a couple channels for people looking for games. You can find open games in #looking-for-players or a community in #looking-for-community. You can also post for yourself in #looking-for-dm
Same here tbh
Check #find-a-game for games. Don't ask to join games in the channels (it's against server rules).
still no replies on my post but we shall see
It can take some time but don't get discouraged!
Don't expect instantaneous replies. Remember that there are more players than DMs.

Im using DnD beyond for my character and i cant find my character's race
im just so hyped to find people lmaooo
What race?
Its a cat
There is no cat race. Are you referring to tabaxi?
Ye i think
The tabaxi isn't free. You need to either buy the book it's in or be in a campaign that has shared content.
Ah
The free D&D Beyond account only has the playable races in the free Basic Rules and the Elemental Evil Player's Companion.
https://media.wizards.com/2015/downloads/dnd/EE_PlayersCompanion.pdf
Accessing Content on D&D Beyond
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
If i choose an race is it permanent?
Yes unless some sort of magic permanently polymorphs you.
What?
You can't switch your class or race without your DM's consent any way.
I heard it's possible to switch races (something like a wizard to a lich), is it true?
If this is just a character you're creating for practice then don't worry about it.
It's my main character
Lich isn't a race but a monster.
Wizard isn't a race but a class.
If you don't have a DM yet then don't be fixated yet on that character because the DM may not allow what you have created.
Ah ok
So should i just use a random race because i can't use the race i am?
Create characters for practice to learn how to create PCs and how the classes work.
Alright
Okay, this may be a really dim question, but what is home brew??
There are feline races in d&d but just cat isn't one of them. They sadly arent in the basic rules either but for future reference we have tabaxi and leonin
To start using the races available freely is a great idea because they should be accepted at any table. 🙂
Typically homebrew is something users have created themselves and is not officially published by wizards of the coast. It can be a spell, a subclass or a species (really just about anything for the game)
Oh cool. Thank you!
So my human wizard is fine?
Should be!
hello everybody! new here and want to say- Dnd has always fascinated me. im quite introverted and had a hard time finding people to play amongst! If theres anywhere I should start-let me know. I'm looking to find a group to play with! and if any of you need a newbie that looks at this stuff like a baby with a cookie, then yes please! message me 🙂 or correct me to a good place to search. Im in love with weirdness, all that jazz is acceptable from weird charisma rolls to blunt dunderheaded!
love to get to know some of you and your characters you play too!

ohhh my bad
Hi hello
Hi!

hey, im new to dnd, and im having trouble understanding the encumbrance rules and also exactly how spells work. can someone give me a quick rundown?
For now ignore encumbrance as it will depend of your DM uses it
What class do you need spells explaining for?
https://youtu.be/yj0q8hj-6a4?si=X4OfPFgckhzNjoMA here’s a detailed video on spells and spell casting
A spell focus (like a wand, or a bard's musical instrument) can be used in place of any material component with no GP value. So if the spell needs a piece of string or a small bell, you wave your wand instead.
One of my warlocks wears hers as a gem on a ring. Very simple.
Is there anyone who is willing to join a call to help with making my character? it would be greatly appreciated!
Check out #learn-to-play and read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).

After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
hey I'm new what do I play on for dnd online
Check the post above. Learn the rules of the game before you look for games online.
There's no official, singular platform for online DnD. If you end up using a virtual table top program, your DM will decide which one to use.
ok can i join a game so I can leaaaarn the ropes?
It's considered polite to understand the rules before you join a game, so that you don't hold everyone else up as you play.
ok thank you very much can you dm voice call so I can learn the rules my computer has an audio glitch
Unfortunately, no. But the basic rules are free:

Most DMs are newbie friendly but they would appreciate you put in some effort to learn the fundamental rules of the game because they can't constantly stop the game to teach you something.
There are new players who join each day. We can't give private tutorials to everyone. Again, check those links including the "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos.
alright watched the tutorials
im ready
so is there a virtual S2000?
d20
I meant d20?
there are many digital dice rollers yeah.
any prefered platform?
though your DM will want to see your roll typically
Even typing "roll 1d20" into google works
hello!
Welcome
hello!
just joined and was curious
is DnD only limited to like knights and magic stuff or also to other sci-fi stuff like halo or star wars?
D&D is more sword and sorcery. There are other tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) that cover other genres (cyberpunk, sci-fi, the occult, etc.). Star Wars has its own RPG.
ohh sick
is that here or in another server
This is the official Dungeons & Dragons Discord server.
D&D's mechanics and game design choices have been designed with the intent and optimized around the idea that it will be played in a medieval high fantasy setting. It can be adapted to fit other genres and settings, but that would involve a large amount of work and doing things the game wasn't intended to do.
If D&D doesn't match up with the game experience you want to have, then other games may work better for you
For TTRPGs think of cars. Sure you can try race or go offroading with a Honda Civic but it probably won't be as good as the specialized cars/trucks for certain things.
Or think of it like video games. You could take call of duty, and mod in a bunch of sci fi weapons and enemies, you you could just play halo instead
thanks a bunch! would it be okey if i stayed in the server if i ever feel like trying out DnD?
Of course! D&D is for everyone, and everyone is welcome in this server
Anyone wanna do a campaign because I want to try my first campaign ever as a DM if people wanna join of course and it’s gonna be on dnd beyond
If you'd like to find a game, read through the instructions in the #find-a-game on how to use the server bot to make a post in the appropriate channels. This channel is not for finding or organizing a game
hi, im new and trying to understand the rules but i dont understand ability modifiers could someone explain them to me?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Check out "Handbooker Helpers" video on ability scores:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoV5iM7peOg
ability modifiers are an amount you add/subtract from whatever you roll based on your attributes (Wis, Cha, etc.)
Once you've determined what your abilities scores are using one of the methods above, then you can use the table to determine what the ability modifier will be.
Your DM will tell you which method to use for assigning your ability scores, but if you don't have a DM then either Standard Array or Point Buy are the best ones to use as a default
With the understanding that those stats might change once you join a campaign

How do I submit a request for #looking-for-dm?
When find steed can you equip things to it/use it as storage? Does it just drop the storage when resummoned? Is this a DM question? I'd reasonably expect to equip a horse/pony with a couple spare weapons and a few sacks for misc items... Not a comically large pack mule. Could this steed be used to pull a cart? I'm trying to understand the utility of it beyond transport and combat
This is more of a #dnd-rules question.
Ok I'll go there thanks

Most tables out there that are looking for players are happy to take on people still learning the game. Its just a matter of being transparent about your newbishness

As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
do i just need to know how to play or is there more to it?
There’s more to DMing than knowing how to play, but there’s plenty of advice for being a DM!
Learning how to play would help a tiny bit

i know how to play
Two resources I'd put on your radar: this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and the first few videos of Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). His thesis is that running the game is easy (or at least easier than it's often made out to be) and fun, and his videos help folks see that for themselves.
You can also search the server using dm advice and/or dm tips as keywords. You'll find plenty of good suggestions!

thanks ive been writing a campaign and i wanna dm it i just dont know how to

Between the resources and some free adventures from the bot posts above and the video linked by razor, you should be set.

Hello!
Happy adventuring!
Thank you!
Start small.
First try running one of the free premade adventures.
After that, try making a single self contained adventure.
This way the work isn’t as daunting and you build up more experience and skills as you work your way up to creating your own handmade campaign.

What’s the difference between the different editions
So is it possible/good idea to get the fundamentals down, and then get into a game to learn first hand.
It is possible and it does help.
For dungeon masters, taking the time to learn what you can on your own helps because setting up an adventure, let alone a full campaign, takes time and work.
Being more specific not starting as a dm but a player, just getting first hand on the dice and the dm narrative
So am I.
Anything that a player can do to reduce the DM workload goes a long way.
It's a great way to meet a DM halfway.
Ight g , I got a lot of memories to file thru, and books to read. Thanks g, gnight and I’ll be back
Keep in mind you don't need to memorize every rule, nor are you expected to.
Most DMs who have been DMing for years don't have every rule memorized.
Is there a “fundamentals” rule book and then I’ll dip.
Best thing you can do to make the process easier, is to take advantage of the resources that are available to make this process easier.
My post up above provides resources to help you get started: #dnd-newcomers message
This includes a cheat sheet, a copy of the free basic rules, and prebuilt characters so you can skip the character creation process and just focus on learning how combat works, particularly how it applies to your character.
Thanks my bad, you’ve been extremely helpful and goodnight.
its so hard finding a game for my age. everything is 18+ only a few are 16+

Basic rules would be good to go through for a start.
can a rare dagger give the user luck ?
In what sense?
if a person has the dagger on them they will get more lucky in general
Having more luck isn't really a mechanic, beyond specific features that allow you to reroll
And I don't believe there are any daggers which do that currently.
If you wanted to add that kind of feature to a dagger, it would be a homebrew item. Whether it should be rare at that point is a matter of opinion
Even luckblades don't actually make you luckier
Does mage armour give you plus 13 ac
No, it gives you an AC of 13 + Dex
The target's base AC becomes 13 + its Dexterity modifier
Ok thanks
Some spells and class features give you a different way to calculate your AC. If you have multiple features that give you different ways to calculate your AC, you choose which one to use.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters#ArmorClass
Question, im a bit new to playing dnd, if i have both the vecna's hand and eye sintonized, do i need components to cast their spells?
Some magic items allow the user to cast a spell from the item. The spell is cast at the lowest possible spell and caster level, doesn't expend any of the user's spell slots, and requires no components, unless the item's description says otherwise.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/magic-items#Spells
Does anyone have the 2024 rule book bought on dnd beyond
It's not out yet, unfortunately.
September 17th
It's set to release Sept 17
But D&D Beyond subscribers get early access.
Sept. 3 for Master Tier subscribers, and Sept. 10 for Hero Tier.
Ok do u have Tasha’s book
Why do you ask?
I am new and I want to play as an artificer but it won't allow me
It needs the tasha book I think
That's correct, you'll need to purchase the supplement in order to use that content
I tought someone could share
Artificer was printed in 2 books, Eberron Rising from the Last War and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. The version in Tasha's has 1 additional subclass though, so it would be the better one to purchase if you weren't trying to get any other content from the eberron book
It is against server rules to silicate content sharing, and content that you have access to via content sharing can only be used in the campaign it is being shared through anyways. If someone were to share it with you, that wouldn't mean you can use it in a game unless that person is also in that game
Oh I am sorry
I am new to D&D and cannot figure out how to work the commands in discord. Is anyone able to help with this? Looking for a group to play with 🙂

So would it be a problem if I set hypothetical battles in a notebook to get an idea of how the damage system works. Just two different species/creatures for now to see how to keep track of damage?
It certainly doesn't hurt to see how combat works like that.
Thanks I’m trying to learn before I actually get into anything but man this really is a game based on reading.
I am enjoying it tho.
Unfortunately it's true! There's quite a lot of info.

They got something further up, it’s got everything.
Ive just read a few things about how to play DnD and tried creating a character but maaaan EVERYTHING IS SO DETAILED my brain cannot handle this much info at once😩 (all I know about DnD is that it's a roleplay fantasy game-)
Check out #learn-to-play and read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Thanks
You dno't need to memorize the rules but just to familiarize yourself with them. There's no shame referencing the rules while you're playing (I do that and I've been playing for decades).
Guessing it takes time, reading what rules come to create a character, to be fair I’m new af too but maybe print a ref sheet and search up what it’s asking or look at the other ref sheets provided online.
It’s super overwhelming for a new player ,
My brain is going to explode
Time, I’m getting it slowly
same xDD At least we're not alone
Stay strong! There's certainly no need to rush.
I have a really important question- There are lots of box games and books of DnD. Do I need any of those to be able to roleplay with people? How do people play this online, like do they just join a random group on DC and chat with people?..
?tag new online
The only thing I know about dnd is a myth about bard that seduce the dragon and nothing else
How long it’s take to understand it all?
You don't need to buy anything to get started. The Basic Rules is free and it has everything you need as a new player.
Sorry wrong question
Hey, bards get some. I know that and even I’m new. It’s no myth.
Please don't repeat that tired meme...
For D&D, you need:
- Dice (which can be digital/free)
- People
- A way to track info (typically a character sheet but it could be a notebook)
- The rules (the Basic Rules are free)
- An adventure (which can also be free, or even homemade)
If you're playing online, the only addition is a means of communication.
This was a big help thank you.
Finding the people is gonna be the hardest part Ig xD
We have Looking for Group/Game channels for that, beginning with #find-a-game.
Oh thank you btw!!
Wow 15 chapters for the basic rules , this is gonna be fun
Reading is a good pastime, you’ll have fun.
As mentioned, you don't need to memorize them, nor are all the rules relevant to every player. For instance, if you're not the DM, you can skip that section. Or if you aren't a spellcaster, you can skip that.
That being said where or what book would I need to read about spells and basic magic
Do I have to draw my own adventurer?
Attacks even just, actions?
Spellcasting is in the Basic Rules, chapters 10 and 11. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/spellcasting
Aight g im off to read.
You don't have to draw anything. Some folks play strictly using their imagination. And you can use pre-written adventures rather than making your own. I think using an existing one is a better place to start, personally.

Hello, I am new to D&D, I have no idea what I'm doing, I have been interested in playing for a few months now, and I heard this was a very friendly community.
Welcome! The post just above yours is a bot post with lots of helpful links and resources to get you started. Once you've taken a quick look at some of the provided materials, feel free to ask any specific questions you might have here. We're more than happy to help
Ok, so I have a question about multi classing.
My first statement is: if you're new to DnD, I would recommend avoiding multiclassing altogether.
We'll be happy to answer your question, though.
I'm wondering if there's anything in the rules that state I can't progress in the same class
I don't really quite know what you mean.
So say I'm playing a rogue and rather than leveling up, I instead choose to multi class into that same class
Multiclassing is just choosing to gain a level in a different class as you level up instead of gaining a level in your starting class. Its not something you do instead of leveling up
So if you choose to gain a level in rogue as you level up, that's just... playing normally
So now I'm not a level two rogue I'm a level one rogue level one rogue.
Oh. No you can't do that
Suffice to say, that isn't possible using the rules
You can't gain the level 1 features of a rogue twice
And going by traditional multi classing rules i technically have access to both of those class abilities simultaneously.
If you were a level 2 character, you could either have 2 levels in rogue, or 1 level in rogue and 1 level in say Fighter for example. If you did that, you would have the 1st level features of a rogue, and the 1st level features of a fighter
So now my level one rogue level one rogue has four expertises and a sneak attack that does 1d6 that triggers again and does another 1d6
That's not how that works
We understand what you mean now, but it simply isn't possible.
Like I said, you cannot have the first level features of a class twice
And using this method I can get my sneak attack to 20d6 and fast, because you need at least 300 exp to get to level 2 so I'll just take my level one rogue level one rogue, walk into the middle of the forest and kick a beehive 40times.
That's not multiclassing. That's just two levels in one class.
Does it say that in the rules?
Yes
Again, you can't multiclass with the same class. You're just have multiple levels in a class.
Would you be so kind as to show me where please?
Do you know what a class is?
Yes. Like bard, wizard that kind of stuff
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/customization-options#Multiclassing
Multiclassing allows you to gain levels in multiple classes.
So you understand you can't multiclass with the same class then?
Ok but I have a copy of the players hand book and it doesn't say anything against what I'm describing.
With this rule, you have the option of gaining a level in a new class whenever you advance in level, instead of gaining a level in your current class.
New being the important word
Multiclassing allows you to gain levels in multiple classes. Doing so lets you mix the abilities of those classes to realize a character concept that might not be reflected in one of the standard class options.
With this rule, you have the option of gaining a level in a new class whenever you advance in level, instead of gaining a level in your current class. Your levels in all your classes are added together to determine your character level.
In general, D&D tells you what you can do, not what you can't. Otherwise, the rulebook would be much longer, and you'd get an Air Bud situation.
Anyway, thanks again, just needed that cleared up 😄
there is one other thing that must be clarified. The XP required to reach a new level is based on your total character level, not your level in the class you want to gain a level in. To go from level 2 to level 3 requires 900 total expirience, regardless of if you are multiclassing or not
Not to mention that defeating critters in the forest to 'grind' exp
- May not grant you any exp at all
- May not be tolerated by your DM

Is dnd e3.5 good for beginners to learn because I haven't even done my first campaign yet and I'm trying to get a grip on the basics so I'm not a huge drag for everyone else (mostly the dm)
What draws you to 3.5 over 5e?
Mostly because I have seen alot more on 3.5 rather then 5e
Fair
5e is definitely much more beginner-friendly and readily available but I can see the 3.5 appeal
Also I already have a rulebook for 3.5 (which I'm not sure if it's really necessary)
No matter what it’s a complicated game. I’d make sure you understand how to make a character and the basic rules and then go with a more beginner-friendly class, beyond that it’s up to you to figure out the game through practice
Make sure your DM knows you’re new, most people are willing to teach you the game if you can handle the fundamentals
Thank you so much I fully expected this to be a very toxic and non beginner friendly deal but I am pleasantly surprised
#dnd-elder-editions will help you with specific details with 3.5
If you decide to try out 5e feel free to start with the resources in the post here: #dnd-newcomers message
The basic rules for 5e are free, so you can explore your options.
Thank you so much I really appreciate it man
i am completely new to this. i don't understand like anything. especially with character creation. i saw an interesting blood mage build i liked and wanted to modify but idek where to start on character creation let alone subclass creation

Most folks suggest reading up on and playing with official classes before messing around with homebrew.
Plus, if you try creating a character, particularly when you have no frame of reference, it is going to feel restrictive and limiting when you realize that you either lack access to the official content to build such a character or that particular build from the internet is not approved by a DM because they don't allow the use of homebrew.
That's why you take to time to learn what resources and options you have to work with at the start, then use that to creatively make something.
none of the classes really fit what i liked. i saw a cool sangromancy build and i just wanna edit it a little bit by adding an extra ability
Perhaps you should save that idea for whenever you make your second character. There are a lot of builds you can do with the official content. Surely there's something you like.
Also certain DMs do not allow homebrew in their games.
Well wheter you want to consider the advice or not, this channel can help you with the basics, and #homebrew can help you with the homebrew class you're wanting to make 👍
havent gotten any replies for my looking for dm post
Putting together a group to play D&D can take time and a fair amount of effort - don't expect it to be instantaneous or easy. Scheduling is usually the biggest monster that destroys D&D campaigns/groups.
I'd also recommend also checking out #looking-for-players (that's DMs needing players) and #looking-for-community (that's other D&D servers that may have games available).
As a DM, I'd be less likely to search for individual players unless I was running low, but there's no shortage of players in #looking-for-players , so your best bet would likely be there as UndyingNoob said
Hello everyone, I'm brand new to DnD, I would like to learn how to play, and start playing with friend without spending to much money. I searched some things on internet and youtube and I'm really excited about playing, but I'm also lost in the 137 page of rules that I hardly understand (I'm not native english). It'd be awesome if someone could introduce me to the game, mechanics, characters and advice me on where to search for material (my pm are open !)

Hello there, anyone here who plays on GMT timezone?
i am new but i know some of the basics i would appreciate some help
Hey! Are the races and subraces on dndwiki (https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/5e_Subraces) valid? or should i consult something else ?
tnx
Notice at the top it says 'Homebrew'? Think of homebrew as fan content or mods. It's not official. I'd strongly advise against using dandwiki as a new player. All of the official 5e content it can share is already on dndbeyond, and the rest is homebrew (or for older editions)
ohhh, ok ty
Sorry to disturbe again, however i need help with a few things to clarify. On character creation, on dnd beyond, the sources and partnered content is something i discuss with a dm?
It would be yep. For making practice characters to get a feel for the rules, you can choose to only use the basic rules, which includes options that should be usable in the majority of games
ty
Hey all. I've been running some VTTs having gone into it somewhat blind. I stopped reading/playing D&D around AD&D days. Anyway, is modern campaign material intended for players to purchase and read? Or is it more for the DMs?
Are you asking about VTTs or about getting started?
Generally any module is intended to be "DM's eyes only" with the exception of some setup and scene descriptions.
In general, if campaigns/modules are intended for the players to buy and educate themselves, or not.
I didn't know that, that's actually very helpful, thank you.
Supplements like Xanathar's and Tasha's aren't adventure modules and provide additional options to players, so they're fair game.
Is there an easy way to determine which are 'player friendly' modules and which are intended for DMs?
If it says "an adventure for..." or "a campaign for..." that would be the main tell.
Keep in mind that even adventures contain play options such as magic items, species, or backgrounds
Or in some adventures, setting information the characters would have
So you may have to share some of the information with your players
All adventures are for DMs' eyes only is the rule of thumb.
Hello I have my first D&D adventure tonight I have created my character but not sure how to play.
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
I have read a bit of it and watched some of the beginners guide on yt
Read Chapter 7 on Ability Scores, Chapter 8 on Adventuring, and Chapter 9 on Combat
Ok will do 👍

Thank you so much !
On September i'll play my first session....
Should i wait for the new handbook?
What do you mean? If you're just a player, the DM should have conveyed if they're using the 2014 or 2024 rules, making it out of your hands!
The new PHB comes out on September 17th, so it certainly seems like it would be a good idea to use that rule book, if everyone in your group is comfortable with it, but as Razorwing said, it is a DM's job to decide what rule books are or are not allowed at their table, so they will tell you which ruleset to use
Are we doomed if we use the 2014 rules?
Plenty of folks will stick with the 2014 rules.
Nothing bad will happen. It's just a ruleset.
People still play older editions of D&D.
So i guess they're cut out from turnaments and community's events
... no?
No, of course not. The 2014 version of 5e is still a plenty fun game. We've all be playing it for the past 10 years. Whether you use the new rules or the old rules is just a matter of preference
But what about keeping up with the game's meta?
that's not how D&D works
What...?
Focus on having fun with friends, not community meta
Think of the 2024 5E revision rules as a patch. DMs not obligated to "upgrade" to it if they don't want to.
D&D is a co-op game where each play group is treated as a wholly seperate universe from anything else. You don't interact with anyone else's game aside from your own. There are no "tournaments" and any "community events" would be something where you start from level 1 in a completely different game
I thought there was a Meta like every other RPG game
I think you're using the word "meta" wrong...
It’s a ttrpg as people have said to you for the past 3 weeks
You roll dice go on adventures and have fun
As a new player you should just learn the rules and have fun without worrying about "meta"
Some character options are stronger than others, of course, but at the end of the day you and your other party members are working together towards a goal, so whether your are stronger or weaker than the other people in your group doesn't really matter. Its a PVE game with no competitive aspects whatso ever

The bot post above has lots of helpful resources and guides to get you started
Nice, also the name Dyno fits it well
Everything is great, I’m getting accustomed to most rules and such. Tho I have no equipment, zero dice or what I usually see people in videos use. Would that be a problem if I play online? Can I just use a dice generator?
If you're playing online then you would use digital dice.
Sounds reasonable lol
D&D is a game where things are pretty much entirely based upon your personal group's norms and preferences. What you are or are not allowed to use will largely be based on what your group is comfortable with. Some groups play in person but are ok with digital tools at the table, and some say pen and paper only. Some groups play online and require the rolls be done through a tool the DM can see and others say you can still roll physical dice if you want and the DM will just trust you. We can tell you all about what is available out there, but the more cultural aspects of it will depend on who you are playing with and what your group is comfortable with
Alr, that sounds fair

You can change one spell on a lvl up iirc
How do you acquire new spells? Lvl up and fill to the new maximum or finding scrolls?
As a sorcerer when you level up.
Only wizards can learn new spells by finding/buying wizard scrolls and spellbooks.
Leveling up allows you to add new spells to your known spells - finding scrolls let's you cast from the scroll but not learn it
Oops, old man already got you.
hi
hi
Oh! So if we have no wizards, scrolls are useless aside for selling?
Interesting. I was wondering how sorcerer and warlock learn new spells but I guess it's just innate talent or fluff vs spell hunting like a wizard

You can use a scroll to cast a spell directly from it, but that "uses up" the scroll. It's like a single time use spell
Oh! Ok thanks! "emergency fireball, only cast in tight spaces"
Save it for a rainy day!
Would the reading of a scroll be action or bonus action?
To add to this, the spell also needs to be on your class list, otherwise it's unintelligible for you to read
The casting of the spell takes the same amount of time as using the spell normally would.
So you'd have to read that spells info to determine action, bonus action etc
any new players wanna create characters and get to know the game better? i've been digging into DND for about an hour now and haven't even gotten to the tip of theiceberg
no offense but if you are that new how could you help them?
I don't think their offering to help someone, but rather looking for someone to learn the game along side them
Tbh I’d love to do that. I’ve also been scraping the iceberg for the last 2 days lol
do y'know any decent character creators? i'm thinking of making a Tiefling rogue, but can't find creators that include subclasses?
Uhhh I’m really not sure tbh. The only one I’m aware of is DnD beyond but I imagine you’ve tried that
Unless the character creator allows you to purchase additional content, the only thing that is going to be included is what is in the free basic rules. The basic rules only include 1 subclass for each class. The rogue's free subclass is the thief. If you wanted to build a character using anything else, you would have to either purchase the book that content is in, or access it through some other means like any physical books you might have access to
If you join an online campaign, the DM may share their digital books with you and allow you have access to more sub-classes and playable races.
Thanks!

Hey guys, 5e stands for 5th Edition right?
Yes
Much obliged.
Wlcm
Alright “final” question, dose a players handbook list the fundamentals as well? Ik that I can read them on here but I like reading hardcover cus am old school.
And speaking of 5e handbook
Fundamentals??
Yeah
Like basics races and how to stuff?
Yeah like what each dice can be used for. That type of stuff
Oh yeye
I found the monster index I think it covers races?
Uhhh idk I think it's just monsters
No I that, basically my only question is can I read the “fundamentals” (ex:that being what each dice is for) on the 5e players handbook. Or do I need to find it across the web. I like the hardcover books.
Monster stat blocks and playable races are two very different things
Thankfully, the player's handbook has all information you'll need.
My angel. Thank you.
hi
You guys know how to homebrew characters?
no i only have enough knowledge to create from the books XD
I just want to create my own character but idk how to homebrew
Apologies, folks, but we usually request to keep group searches on their official channels. Check out #find-a-game for more info.
its so hard to find a game there though dosh
It's usually highly recommended to avoid homebrew completely if you're new to the game.
It's true, unfortunately finding a game takes a lot of patience. Unlike an online game, finding the right game for you might take days or even weeks. Persistence and patience are key!
Although I am new I still would like to learn to homebrew
You should learn the rules of the game before you attempt to so you know how the rules work before you may break them...
Spread your net wide there are lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
Was just looking for this link!
I have it saved in my personal discord
Note that Dosh Bones was correct- This is not the channel for finding a group. Please use #find-a-game and follow the instructions there.
Hey! I've played a lot of D&D years ago, and im trying to get back into it (as a player, at least for now)
Which type of character would you recommend?
Depends on what you're interested in 😄
Honestly any- but really the one that catches your interest and seems fun to play.
hmm alr
If you have any questions about specific classes please feel free to ask!
Generally, the less magic focused a character is, the simpler it is.
that was my next question lol
don't wanna have to relearn all rules at once just to play a character
will do, ty
Usually you can focus on the free basic rules at the beginning and learn more as you go
Barbarian, Rogue, Monk, and Fighter tend to be the most straightforward in that respect
got a whole bunch of paper books laying around, it's just that they've been laying around xd
haven't played in like 2 years
Haha, you'd be surprised how many people here have that too 🙂 it's a great time to get back to the game, especially with the refresh to the core rule books. They are backwards compatible so you don't need to purchase anything again unless you want to.
sounds good!
I think I'll have a look at Monk, seems quite fun at first glance
any recommendations for a subclass?
Which books do you have? I've played a Shadow Monk who was really fun
Player's handbook, Xanathar's guide, and Tasha's cauldron
that's it for player options
could you quickly remind me where Shadow Monk comes from?
looks like its from the phb https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/phb-2014/monk#WayofShadow
(player's handbook)
Hi I'm new to the game and I tried to build my own character, I never played the game before so I hope I didn't do something dumb. Is there a place where I can post a picture or a pdf of my character to get feedback ?

thx
Where do you go to create a character?
Hello 👋🏼 I’m new to Dnd and just bought the starter set and I have no idea what I’m doing 😂 any tips or groups who can help?
hi, i'm new too
Heyy
so you should go to dndbeyond > tools > character builder
Heyyy im relatively new, ive started a playing in 2 campaigns and a one(two)shot but never got to finish any of them so im still pretty shakey on things
Hello everyone, relatively newbie here too. I've played in two one shots. I've joined a campaign that's kinda stuck now so I'm looking for a new group 🙂 my main character atm is a male half-elf fighter
Wouldnt it be bad if your original group picks up again and now you're stuck with 2 campaigns?

Dose the 5e handbook also disclose info on different types of dm play types: ex: saw one that said the rules would be 90/10 don’t know what that means but I do wanna know if I can read about them different types of games.
the rules would be 90/10
This doesn't actually mean anything, sounds like that particular DM is using their own scale of something
The books talk about the three "pillars" of play
- combat
- exploration
- social interaction
Some DMs describe their games in terms of how much they focus on those elements. For example a DM that says their game is 1:1:1 would be saying it's equal parts all three
Hey guys, Im new to dnd and Ive been wondering how to get into it. More specifically which board and stuff to get also who to play it with

So...what more would i need? Perhaps the dice, and a board or actual character pieces? I don't wanna really start off getting a lot, im actually a bit tight on budget, that's why. So essentially what would I need?
There are a lot of digital tools that are completely free. You can access the basic rules, character sheets, digital dice, and virtual battle maps all without paying anything. If you want to play in person, how much you have to buy will come down to how much your group is comfortable with using digital tools while playing online. When I used to play in person, my group all had laptops with us for exactly that purpose, to save some money. If you want everything to be pen and paper, then dice is still the only thing you have to buy. You could print out the basic rules and your character sheets, and battle maps can be improvised. When I first started, we used chess boards as our battle maps, with chess pieces as our characters. The purpose of a battle map is just to give you a representation of something that’s happening in the fantasy world in your imagination. In fact, it’s not even required that you have a map at all. It makes things way easier, but there are some groups that play using “theater of the mind” which means they simply describe the environment and where they move to and who they attack without ever actually using a battle map. It’s just purely in their imagination. That can be a little tricky though, especially for a beginner, so I’d recommend finding some way to make a battle map if you can

can someone help me? I doing up my 3 level sorcerer and am little confused, it says that I get 2 level 2 spell slots but don't I unlock level 2 spells at PC level 4?
Look at the sorcerer table here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/classes#QuickBuild10
It's at level 3 sorcerers unlock 2nd-level spells.
A level 3 sorcerer knows 4 spells and has 4 1st-level spell slots and 2 2nd-level spell slots.
A level 4 sorcerer knows 5 spells and has 4 1st-level spell slots and 3 2nd-level spell slots.
so why do I get 2 2nd levels, up casting?
Do you know the difference between "Known Spells" and "Spell Slots"?
I think, known spells is spells I've learned and spell slots is how many I can cast excluding up casting
Spell slots are what you use to cast.
You still use a spell slot when you "upcast." If you cast Magic Missile (a 1st-level spell) using a 2nd-level spell slot, you still expend a 2nd-level spell slot. If you're a level 3 sorcerer you can't upcast Magic Missile at 3rd-level spell slot because you don't have a 3rd-level spell slot.
as sorcerer, you learn 1 new spell every time you level up, and you can replace an old spell with a new one
oh ok, what about sorcery points, I saw that I can get more spell slots but isn't it used for my meta magic?
hii!
You use your sorcery points on how you want to so you need to manage that resource.
you have as many sorcery points as you have sorcerer levels. you can turn your spell slots into points and points into slots according to the conversion table
What are the basics I need to know for DnD?
that's it?
#learn-to-play has a good overview
well you can also use your sorcery points for metamagic. you only learn a new metamagic at sorcerer 10
