150 is the regular range (from 5 to 150 feet)
600 is the long range (from 151 to 600 feet) where your Attack roll is at disadvantage
(if you fire a ranged weapon/spell attack within 5 feet of your target your Attack roll is at disadvantage)
hello
Thanks!
hey everyone, I'll be dm'ing for the first time in a few days. any tips?

Good night everyone I’m looking forward to play D&D tomorrow during and after school maybe im sorry for those who had to help me if i annoyed them or bothered them but I am a really good guy and silly one to but thank you higher ranking people
Also my class or things is a cleric
And my name is seander
It’s dumb but I thought it might work what do you all think

Yay :3
I like the name Seander. Not dumb at all.
Hi I'm new to DND and I was wondering where to start. I have watched the videos from the website but I still don't understand.

hey, first time dm, anything i should know to start my first campaign
Head on over to #dm-discussion and we can give you DMing advice.
heay guys. is there a way i can learn an armour proficiency or smth?
Hello everyone
There are some rules on learning new proficiencies, yes. A DM might modify it, but generally it takes 250 days and 250 gp, and you need to find an instructor (who might also request further payment and you may need to convince to help you)
ah i see. thank you!
A DM might also use the rules in optional rules in Xanathar's Guide to Everything on training instead, in which case you still need an instructor, but the time is instead 10 weeks minus your intelligence modifier and it's 25 gp per week.
Oh, and some feats grant proficiencies. The Heavily Armored, Lightly Armored, and Moderately Armored feats grant you proficiency with Heavy Armor, Light Armor, and Medium Armor + shields, respectively. All three of those are in the Player's Handbook.
Hellooo
Hello
hey everyone
for rp purposes, should i still get the noble starting gear if the charcater was recently kicked out of her noble house? ( she keeps the title tho)
hihi
Sure. But if you want something different, ask your DM.
i was just wondering if it was appropiate
Changes to the equipment gained as part of your background would need to be approved.
However, if you're just concerned with whether it makes sense in your character's story I have good news: you're the one writing it. Heck, I even have a direct example: when the Lady Reylana was exiled from her family, she absolutely took everything she could with her (coincidentally matching the noble's starting equipment).
oh okok, ty
i just wasnt sure if it made sense
Your character could have:
- taken it regardless
- hidden it away before being kicked out
- had it given to them by a friend afterwards
Etc.
Ty
Last Friday night~~
Do you just need a started campaign to run or something?
I just need to dance
Ah, yeah, D&D Beyond can do that.
Yeah 😭
If you just Google D&D Beyond it should give you the character builder.
Are you looking for something more specific?
That’s against TOS fyi
Yeah but for some reason there's barely any like feats and my mates say I need to join a campaign in the thingy or smthn
Oh sorry 😭
Idk what he means, I don’t use D&D Beyond.
They mean you only get access to 1 feat with the basic rules
Hiii

Hello and welcome! If you're new to DnD, the best place to start is with the links above! The basic rules outline everything you need to play, and I've heard great things about the introductory demo. If you need in-depth videos about specific topics, the Handbooker Helper videos are also really good. Finally, we have #learn-to-play for more info!
Thx I’ve not been able to find stuff like this actually
Yea in my local area i doubt anything like this is popular and if it is it’s a private friend group. The only local game shop that did this closed because everyone just wanted to play on the acers
There's always online.
Yea i thought about it but i haven’t made the leap since id still like to get more rl connection
I’m still open to the online idea
I have a question about the Spell page on the Character Sheet
Ask away!
That is the total number of spell slots you have for that level. Assuming you are not multiclassing (which you should not be if you are a beginner) then simply check your class's table to see how many spell slots you have of each type for your character's level
For example if it's 4 for level 1 I can only have 4 different spells?
Level 1 spells*
Slots are different from spells known.
Spell Slots and number of known spells are two different things
Yea ..
I saw a video which explained it as
Slots are how many castings you have available, which can be drawn from your spells known (or prepared).
So if you have six spells known but three slots, you can cast three times total: either the same spell three times, three different spells once, or some combo adding up to three.
take a look at your class chart.
Those three spells (max) would be drawn from you pool of six known spells.
Oh alright
Is the "Spells Known" the lines below the "Slots Total"?
Like, how many Spells you Know
It depends on your class.
Yes, you write your spells on those lines
which class are we talking about?
They are asking about the character sheet
well spells known means something different for a cleric than a sorcerer for example
Newbie question why is fireball a meme now
fireball is a pretty strong spell for its level (and its like a big explosion) so many players like to cast it a lot
Actually, let me begin from the start. When making a Character Sheet, what should be the things that I prioritise? Like, what's the order of making the Sheet
You can follow the step-by-step process here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
.—. Yea i figured as much I saw a thing about it while playing eso with a Xbox friend and he made the joke about casting fireball
Another question, does Race, Class or Background change the... Like... The number below Str, Dex, Con, Int, Win and Char
Your race can increase certain ability score modifiers, yes
Your ability score
The ability score and the ability score modifier? They can be displayed either way.
There is the ability score, and then there is the ability score modifier
Also, what's EP
Electrum pieces, which is maybe the least used currency.
How is Initiative determined in the Character Sheet
initiative bonus is your dexterity modifier.
some class features and feats will give you a additional bonus but you will be told so if it comes up
So for now it's only Dex modifier?
Unless you've got a feature, trait, or item that says otherwise, it's always just your Dexterity modifier.
Also, can Background increase Ability Score?
no (at least not with the current version of the game)
well its a bit more complicated than that
if you dont wear armor, the base is 10+dex mod
light armor is its base value + dex mod (example leather is 11+ dex mod)
medium armor is base value + dex mod, but the max mod added is +2 (so for example if you have 20 dexterity and wear scale mail, then its still only 14+2)
heavy armor ignores dex mod completely
and then there are other ways to calculate armor with some features, like monk has 10+dex+wisdom if they dont wear armor
Alright that's crazy lot of information
Thankfully you only really need to know one of these things at a time.
Everything else is in the book if you ever need to look it up!
yeah you basically just look at what kind of armor you wear and then look up how its AC is calculated
I think for starters I'll go for Human race, so if I understood the Handbook I get:
Proficiency on all weapons
+1 on all Ability Scores (Not attributes)
Speed of 30 ft
Common and Org or Elvish or Dwarf Language (one of the 3)
Is that right or did I miss something?
I'm not sure where you're getting the "proficiency in all weapons" from
I'm guessing humans don't since it doesn't say it? I just misunderstood the meaning then
yeah humans dont get weapon proficiencies. it would clearly say so if theyddid
also the language is more open. you speak common and 1 language of your choice (though languages should always be discussed with your DM to fit your backstory)
there is one problem, I don't have a DM
Same
I wanted to make a character sheet just to see if Im fit to playing DND with others, I didn't think I'd need a DM
You can practice making characters until you find a DM to play with.
Yeah ive got three made just gotta find a dm
yeah just give your char any language for now and change it if necessary once you have a DM
I'll just write "common + 1 more"
Also what does it mean when it says "with a disadvantage"?
Like, I saw a spear/javenile throw that said like, 30 ft or up to 120ft with a "Disadvantage Throw"
Ohhh that's how it works
Also "Hit Dice", is it like a Healing? You get one each level and you roll your class dice to see how much you'll heal, right?
The short explanation is:
- you have an amount of hit dice equal to your level.
- The kind of hit dice you have depends on your class
- Hit dice act as a resource you can spend to heal when you take a short rest
- you regain a portion of your hit dice when you take a long rest
Hmmm, so kinda like the Flasks in Elden Ring?
Also, can you ONLY use it in Short Rest?
And how much is "a portion" of my hit dice, or is it determined by the DM?
There are a few rare spells or items which use hit dice, but they're the exception to the rule. It's almost exclusively used only on short rests.
You regain half your maximum pool of hit dice when you take a long rest
"maximum pool" so if I'm level 6, I have a Maximum pool of 6?
That's correct. Each long rest restores 3 spent hit dice at level 6.
Oh alr thanks

Does anyone know how to find local players? To like join a tabletop game?
Check your local game shop. Check your local D&D group. Check sites like Meetup.
Also your local library.
my dm just told us we were being attacked by these things and didnt tell us what they are
bruh it wont let me send images
okay so theyre flying and theyre sucking someones blood
Sounds like a headache that some swords and/or spells can clear up!
do you mind if i send you an image of the things were being attacked by (theres 6 of them)
Please do not. And if you're hoping someone will tell you, that's likely metagaming. You should try to work with the info the DM gives you. (And if you don't have enough info, ask!)
Yes, sometimes DMs won't out and out tell their players what the enemies are so the players won't know or find out what the creatures' abilities, vulnerabilities, and/or resistances/immunities are.
This is what we call meta-knowledge and it's frowned upon.
guess ill just stay in the fetal position in my tent
Letting your party members fall instead of helping them makes it more likely you fall in battle too.
those things dont know im in the tent so i think im fine
Still, bad form to not step in to help others when you're playing a game together.
If the monsters can kill the rest of the party then they can kill you too.
but if i wait in the tent the things will fly away eventually
The DM knows you're there...
D&D is a Role-Play, Co-Op experience. Even if your character's mentality is to hunker down in this tent, not helping in someway is dangerous. Who wants to travel with someone like that?
The point of D&D is to be an adventurer that fights monsters to save people and to earn fame, fortune, and glory. If you made a character that is going to cower in their tent at the first sign of danger, you're going to have a very hard time enjoying your game and feeling like a part of your team. It might be a good idea to redesign your character or change their personality
There is no "winning" D&D, and the point of the game is not "survive at all costs" so get out there and be a hero!
Ditto the above. Part of the unwritten expectations of D&D is the player characters (and the players) work together, even if they do kicking and screaming all the while.
Mosquito?
were thinking with all our brain power now
well I know these monsters and they are kinda like really big mosquitos lol
Lol, I have no clue what monster it is and got pretty close with a random guess
oh the combat is over
sort of like a mosquito/vampire bat mix
For Barbarian, what's "Rage" and "Rage Damage" ?
Should I put it on Features and Traits?
have you read the barbarian class entry? both are explained there
"strength and resilience"
And I can use a set amount without resting, guessing that's 2
And while in Rage I get +2 Strength?
Damage, not strength
Nvm found it
Also
It says I start with a Simple melee weapon and a Martial melee Weapon, and a Explorers Pack
Does that mean I start with it or do I have to buy it using the money I got from the 2d4 rolls?
you can either get starting gear and a set amount of gold based on your class/background or i believe you can start with a certain amount of gold instead and purchase whatever supplies you want your character to have, which can include the weapons/packs - with the former, you get the gear "for free" (as in you don't need to subtract from your starting gold to add all of the stuff to your equipment, it's assumed to come with your class and background)
Generally you're better off with the suggested starting equipment.
Should you have something very specific in mind and it doesn't seem like an unbalanced trade, your DM may allow you to make a substitution.
Idk what happened..
I got told they would send me a link to dnd beyond ti Gan acess....so I been waiting and then they tell me the other 2 are mad cause the third left....but IM the third ....idk what I did wrong
Checked all your messages?
Yea, he said the game is in like less than an hour now...and told me I was wasting his time...
So I guess cause I'm new...just screw me...
I don't have all the stuff on beyond so I was waiting for his link and idk how to do all the stuff..
Are you prepared as per your DM's instructions up to that point?
Tell them you're sorry for the miscommunication and you'd appreciate some direct assistance if that's possible. Don't blame yourself.
Help me
With what?
if you ask more specific questions we can help with specific answers
Also, can all the Classes and Races have anyone of the Backgrounds
@wild onyx well...I think I was annoying him cause I kept asking how to do rolls and everything....
Yes. Well, mostly. Setting dependent.
yes.. you can be a rogue with a Noble background..
the limit is your ability to make sense for the character and the campaigns
Was the game advertised as suitable for new players?
@wild onyx he said he didn't mind...idk what happened
Maybe dnd isn't for me...
Just feel stupid now...
mix-ups happen with social situations. It's unfortunate, for sure.. but not indicative of how D&D games are.
@deft sigil he told me to make a characteron beyond so I was trying to d that but I told him for the subclass I was wanting I didn't see it... he said he'd send over a link Soni can acess his books
Please don't blame yourself. Maybe that DM just wasn't prepared. Have a look through the Basic Rules and videos (link to follow) and see what you can do to make a character with that. Share it in #character-discussion .

@deft sigil then he tells me he didn't like his time being wasted....and the others didn't want to play with me..
I didn't even get to talk to anyone else. .
I am sorry to hear that happened. it sounds like there was a miscommunication in there somewhere and it threw the whole group into a tizzy. Finding the right group can take some time.. but there are lots of videos and resources to peek at in the meantime to help you get ready for the next invite 🙂
and you can always ask questions about things that seem unclear or confusing in places like this in the meantime
This is the third group I've tried
Wait I'm confused
So I get both the items from my class and the items from my background?
Or only the ones from my background
Yes, you get starting equipment from your class and from your background.
D&D is a social game with other people. There is no guarentee that you will get along with them just like any other type of relationship in life.
Finding a good group to play D&D with is like dating. It will take time to fine a good group so keep looking.
I just wish I knew what I was doing wrong
It may not be a "you" problem - in social situations there are at least two parties - and often more.
"Ten stoppered bottles filled
with colored liquid, a set of weighted dice, a deck of
marked cards, or a signet ring of an imaginary duke"
I can't find these items anywhere

Those are the item details. Since they're not equipment, I don't believe a lot of background items have entries in DDB or the like
if you make a sheet on DDB those get added automatically under "other possessions" if you add the starting equipment after picking class/background
Also, do I have to follow whatever the dice rolls on the Personality traits, ideals, bonds and flaws?
The Bond doesn't really fit the background of my character in my head, so I'm guessing I could ask my DM (if I had one) if I could roll again?
Nahh, you can pick whatever you like. The dice rolling is just for those that can't make up their mind and would like a random option
Ohhh
You can even make up an entirely unique option
You pick the ones you want or create them yourself.
Alright thanks a lot
They're all suggestions.
You can discuss other options or even create custom ones with your DM
Especially for bonds, it is very common to have one that isn't listed. There are infinite motivations out there for someone to go off on an adventure afterall
Would like to particpate in a Dnd Session in the new few weeks who would welcome a newcomer
Check #find-a-game
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- This is a great way to learn as AL Games follow rules as written guidelines,
- Games are broken down into self contained adventures that are completed in a single session.
- This can be played in person and online.
- #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690are channels in the server where you can meet to community and find events to play.
Other options
- You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
Hi there, i'm new to Dungeon & Dragons, and I'm trying to find a beginner friendly group to join in, for my first adventure. I don't know how to find a group, or anything like that. Any help or direction, would be fantastic.
In my experience, most groups out there looking for players will be alright with teaching a newbie. Just be transparent about being new to the hobby and willing to learn and you'll be fine
check #find-a-game
I generally have no idea, i'm just trying to keep it via Discord. I did try looking at a website called role20? But when trying to find one that's new player friendly, they basically, expected me o write out a Resume? I'm like, that's a bit much.
I did, it wasn't clear to me.
Welcome to finding online games
Theres about 20 players per dm available,so youll have to put effort in to be picked
Of course you shouldnt write a full book lmao
but most if not all dms will ask for a minimum of info
the find a game channel has the instructions on how to post in our looking-for channels. If you check out #looking-for-players you may notice you cannot type in the chat bar like you can here.. that is because only templates go in those channels, and you have to use the commands in #find-a-game to load the template.
I could type in this chat channel /looking-for dm and it would automatically pop up the command as a suggestion. If I enter it (with no other text before or after the /looking-for dm ) the template will pop up and I can fill it out with my general information.. my timezone, am I a new player, etc
Also they're taking time out if their day to give you a fun experience it's only fair and they want to get a group that is really interested in playing too
It makes sense, especially if they're more beginner focused for the the campaign
I wanted to say that but thought it was too rude
Sadly most dnd players, especially newer ones, tend to not really see that side of the coin
As a long time dm it hurts every time a player thinks im gonna reschedule my week just because they wanna go party on game day
I don't think so personally, it's matter of the fact, and a lot homebrew stuff too that adds to the time
I was like that for my one-shot a yr back
😅
I got warned last time I said something like that
so I avoid being controvertial
I am just an idiot lol, I don't expect my party to wait for me if I can't make it
Me and the DM can make up something for why my character missed it too
Thats a pitfall I avoid
I just keep the character around for combat and such
Justifying every absense can lead to unwanted roleplay
Welp idk why the staff don't tell you what exactly it is got you in trouble and why
So I just go "yeah this player isnt here today,so hell just help you guys out in combat"
Ohh you just possess the character while they're gone? Lol
They did, told me I was being too harsh to newer players,so now I just step on eggshells
Damn, I am the new player though!
lol
Yeah, makes things easier, plus my combat encounters are harsh so lacking a fighter could cause death
Fighter as in the person not the class
Fair enough
Like not finding a good crew that enjoys your games?
I understand the sentiment. Even good crews can quickly forget who's in charge.. if you can't do anythng questionable or bad to a player's character.. what's the point in playing? Where's the risk!?
No,I just don't wanna be the dm anymore
In my entire dnd career I wasnt a player once
Oh fair enough
What if my dope bad ass character just thwarts the dm😈
Its all just ungratefull players, time scheduling, litteral 9-5 workload without being paid
I'd either let them be the DM or just give them everything they want. Players seem to like that more
Fair lol, you could host paid too though
You take 60d10 "sit down shut up and listen" damage
LMFAOO
That would be hilarious
Till that person leaves, scares the other players.. and they slowly leave as well
"OH GREAT ONE, WHY HAVE YOU SMITED ME SO!"
I tried it,but its even more hellish to find decent players, cuz I can't just ban a paying customer for bad behavior,so I gotta endure them forcing their weird stuff
I mean yea
I know
Plus, nobody joins paid games, they beg for free samples
Do a free sample
Im going to power word shush you
Short lil one-shot see if you find people you like and boom
You give the whiners what they want and also find good players to dm
I'll never charge for my games.. I've been told I could do it.. but I won't.. Cause I would never play in a pay one either.. The cost of a video game per month? Uhhh....
Hiii 😊 LOL
My next game ain't till next year, but I got two slots open out of four
Damn, yeah, true, getting 4 hours of content a week for a year isnt worth the 60 bucks
proceeds to buy FIFA
That's fair, I feel like you could say if you'd love to tip it would be much appreciated and you can do that here x, y, or z. But besides that let's get to this story or something of the sorts
They usually charge $10 a week, that's $40 a month, that's $480 a year
Yeah, that is what I do. If they are that good.. I'll buy them an asset or something if its on things like Roll20
That's fine with me, just lemme know near the end of your game and I'll let yk if I'm interested after I get to hear some of the info about it
For a guy that spent his week preparing the stuff,I say its worth it
Some people do it for the love of the game lol
Yeah, thats what I used to do
You just gotta find the right people
Did it cuz it was fun, then I realised that I spent 8+ hours a week preparing, and that none of my players wanted to ever tried dming themselves,so I kinda just stepped away
Ohh
That's some huge prep time. In person?
What does it mean if you have disadvantage on an attack roll
You roll twice and take the lower result
Thx
No online,I use foundry and I like making things spectacular
I understand that, I wouldn't like DMing personally but I do have fun ideas I could work with a DM to make happen I think
Ah yeah.. Foundry will do that to you. Great tool, don't like its Devs, so I just keep it simple with Roll20
People absolutely terrify me and im a little dense how cooked would I be if I tried to play dnd with a bunch of strangers
Youd be above the average dnd player
I'm dense too sometimes, you just got to find a dm that's chill lol
I need an example
If I were to just join any random campaign that was looking for players like
How well would I even fare
Hmm.. Well.. You do Comissions.. which means you have an artistic mindset and skill to back it up. Which to me, indicates your characters probably are not boring sludge.
As long as you play along you're better than a fair amount lol
Just stand out,be polite, thank your local dm and try your verry best
Hey😔 lol
Only one of my characters got some backstory to them
Define backstory? 😉
Also have fun but don't do anything that would throw off the flow of the story
Unless a dm says it is welcome ig
But that's a given lol
I’m very unorganized so even if my character had an interesting story I highly doubt I’d be able to stick to it😭
I’ve always had a lot of trouble with mischaracterizing my own characters
Would you say.. play as a Paladin and spam Arcana checks when the team has a full caster Sorcerer who should be doing the bulk of arcana checks?
I checked out the moment you said arcana but I’m going to say no
Sooo the gist of it is he was raised from a young age to lead the Southern Temple of the Four Elements but he decided to flee after his mentor Ostayg was forced to resign by the council and Ostayg was one of the only people not trying to rush his development so my character also liked that about him😅
I've seen less.. so you are already better than 25% of what I've seen
WOOO
That's my human monk
I have none for my other characters but I'm waiting for a game for them to do it
(I stole his backstory from Aang)😅
My DM even allowed me to get an Airbender Staff, she's cool for my first DM campaign
LOL. It did look familiar.... I don't see anything wrong with it either.. easily vibable
Ill vent here cuz like I just feel like it
Yeee that's what I was going for like I was asking the people in character discussion how to make it fit this setting more and they thought I was one of the people thinking I'm the main character bc I said chosen pne
I had such a sick character concept, with custom art and everything, but the dm ghosted us 3 days before the campaign
One*🤣
Bruh
I mean, at least you have a new random character to do whatever you want with now?
Thats not how this works you sweet summer child
Indeed.. Character vaults should be somethign every player should make. Make the characters you want, then give to the DM and see what the DM will do or ask for you to change.. 50 / 50... If you make a character that just bends to everything to the DM, you will not have fun.. you will make mistakes
Im on the other side of the argument
You play in the dms world, the least you could do is respect him by catering your character
yeah that makes sense, but I would think you’d want to personalize that character to where it fits in the world, but also fits your own wants
But that’s my own perspective from never playing dnd ever
so..
That's why the DM and I would compromise? It should be 50 / 50.. Not.. 10 for the player and 90 for the DM... plus, its more work on the DM if the DM has to do it all.. I've had to do it all for one player character's sibling character... which ended up getting booted because they couldn't perform from a lack of not knowing their character and making them believable.
Hi
Ye that's what I want though make a base and then the dm can work with it me and my dm had the same idea for my session 0 with her lol so that was fortunate
New here
Random question, sorry if I’m interrupting things,
Are hybrids usually allowed?
I had a cool character concept but idk if I’d be able to use it
Your perspective is accurate
Hi 👋
Like Shifters?
Depends on the dm,next question
You're already better than most new players dms will love you lol
No I mean like for example half-human half-elf or smth like that
I was the stinky player last yr but I'm doing better this time!! lol
Yeah? They have Half-Elf and Half-Orc. Don't see why not
Ohh yes that's very fine
I do individual character creation with each player,I hop in a vc with them and let them tell me what they want,I then tell them my home rules and if I reject their idea before helping em making stats
Again, that depends on each dm if they accept homebrew or not,but most of em would imo
Yea you just gotta ask DM but if you really want a certain character find a DM that will be okay with it
now imagine if I had the balls to actually approach a dm and ask to join their campaign 😭
“Hey can I join”
Close your eyes and pray while you do it
What could go wrong
Like at the end of the day you're here to have fun, as long as you're not rude or anything you'll be fine
They’ll start berating me for existing and mercilessly bully me and call me a worthless piece of trash and make me want to hide away forever in a dark corner?
"Im your Uber driver.."
Wait until you find out about #looking-for-dm 😳
Go back to the abyss gremlin
"AND STAY OUT!! 😠 "
Ahhh interaction
There’s a dark corner for every failure, you haven’t run out if corners to hide in yet, so guess there’s still hope
Mhhh ill get the big mac with that please
Uhhh I need a #5 large
That's all ik
I sent you a DM on this. Wonder if you'd elaborate more on this?
I may be a bit of a baby
I hope they were just joking😭
Can nothing bad ever happen to your character in a game?
🫂 it's ight Hoori, I'll protect you from the bullies bro
I honestly encourage bad things to happen to my characters, I enjoy it
That was them talking about asking a DM to be a part of their campaign iirc
Like joking about why they wouldn't want to ask lol
Yeah I am, dw! I’m more sarcastic than I am serious
Then you are already better than 50% - 75% of D&D players.. maybe even higher
How dare ye harm my character!! He is gods gift to Earth!
What if Earth is evil though? Lol.. and wants to swallow you up via a sinkhole?
Same, at least out of contect chat, I try to play along with the stories lol
GAIA NOOOO!
😔
My character stubbed his toe?! Impossible! He has 1000+ defense he can’t get hurt!
For what have I done to you Gaia! This is so so saddening😔 (hopefully I get to do some dungeon crawling of the Earth gobbles me up lol)
"Can I roll to dodge the side of the table to not stub my toe??"
You get gobbled up and find yourself in the Underdark.. have fun
I would have so much fun until I'm getting jumped by 3 different underdark creatures bc I got swallowed up away from my party
😓
"Mhm mhm mhm My lich casts destroy water in your skull,NOW GET OUT OF MY TABLE,YOU POTATO CHIPS"
Wait I can cast destroy water on a creature?
nah I’ll just dodge bro
You can cast destroy water in an innocupied space, your skull cavity is an innocupied space,of course any sane dm weill say no to this bs
Fun fact destroy water is a radius
Damn
I double dodge!
The imagination of a power player is truly endless
Im going to find you,and give you the love your dad never did (/j)
They could dodge oxygen if you let them
Papa?😳
Just like they dodge blades of grass!
No,a power gamer is someone that only bases on actual mechanics, they dont do creative stuff
We are so getting banned
So who is your character for you first game?
Once you are ready to ask to join(
?*
LMFAO NOOO
no clue!
You could just make a simple one to start
"Ill make a tiefling bard"
Like what interests you in role-playing games?
I mean how would i make a character without knowing what I’ll be doing with it?
Bro think he's bilbo baggins or whatever his name is
Wdym?
Hey guys! 😄 i'm looking for a Dnd group! if any are interested Dm me!
Big buff lizard men
If you want homie I sent you a dm,ive been dming for 5 years so I can help a little
I think we're different role play games 🤨
No thats a HALFLING
I agree with this take
Sounds like you should be a dragonborn
No you don’t get it im not a weirdo!! They just look cool I swear no other reason!!
No,he can just be a lizardman, its an actual official race
We see those tabs...
LMFAOOO SUREEE BUDDY!
Ohhh
Ik their character art is gonna be epic
But if they choose dragonborn they can spit stuff out there mouth
I played Baldurs gay(te) I don’t really care for the dragonbreath ability
It’s a little
Bad
I think a crocodile-like character would be cool though, if such a race exists
Unless that also falls under the lizardman category which I somewhat doubt
Like a Sub-Race of Lizardfolk
Could work it out with a DM if not
I guess so yeah
I am a fan of Lizardfolk, so I'd allow it in any game that has Lizardfolk
Before I really start creating the character, how exactly would I go about making him? Like what are the fundamentals for doing so?
Is it just like a basic reference sheet or would i also need to add something else?
Are you familiar with Xanthar's Guide to Everything?
No, I’ve never heard of it before
You can use D&DB or other Character sheet sites iirc
There's a section in that book.. Starting at pg. 61 to 72 that could help you make a good skeleton of a character.. On who, what and how they are.. and then you can go from there
It's a lil easier if you go in with an idea of the character you want to do it could be one that you already know that you just make your own lol
ok, I’ll make sure I check out both so I get a better idea on what I’m doing
lizard that is cool
That sounds good enough
I sent you a DM for more info to help you on your journey
LOL a cool lizard?
The coolest
I could even give you a voice acting tip on how Lizardfolk could speak
Thoughts on combat?
Bc bards are pretty cool you play instruments and give buffs to the homies and debuff the enemies but don't do much damage yourself
I’ve always been more used to hack n slash combat, so I doubt I would be good as any kind of bard
But out of combat you can be rizzler
If you’re familiar with monster hunter at all, I would never pick up a hunting horn because it’s too complex? Im not a support player I’m a tank player
Ohhh hack and slash, so a lizardman barbarian?
Then probably barbarian haha
I love violence
Hoori yearns for the battlefield
I doubt I would actually be able to voice act my character since I am nowhere near male nor do I have any kind of masculine voice, I’ll probably just end up making him a mute
An angry, angry mute.
No no. Don't worry about that.. its not too hard really
He could be a dragqueen
🤣
Drag queen is crazy bro
Like when I run my Lizardfolk.. I usually have him speak slower and add more Sssss.. to more of his words
Instead of boots he’s wearing heels, dominating the battlefield in a different way
Dominating in looks and combat ability 💅
For example: "I comes to devours those whose threatens me" Simple.. like snake like talk.. Yuan-ti would sound similar too
This topic has moved away from the purpose of this channel so I'm going to gently nudge y'all to take this to #dnd-discussion as it would be more appropriate there (or potentially #character-discussion)
Let's leave the channel free for new to D&D folks to get help getting started.
Thanks!
My bad!
Oops
Hi, I was wondering since i'm new. should I join a game to learn firsthand?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
You'll need to have an idea for a character before you join a game usually, some dms are open to helping a little bit though like if you want to do something not in the free stuff you can do in the game
you should try and learn on your own with the basic rules first
I created a Chaotic-Neutral Goliath Barbarian for this newest campaign i'm in
Sounds fun lol
@placid river Yeah, I never had a group to play with cause I was big into sports and everything and everyone always thought D&D was "Nerdy". Possibly the most fun thing I have done tbh
Teens are so goofy
I love the idea of D&D, plus its fun playing with friends and going through a campaign
Like just do something you wanna do for fun bruh
Exactly
Nah, I get that
I got no friends to play with though, luckily I found a game though!
Ayy that's cool, seems you'll be smacking enemies around for fun then huh? lol
Hell yeah
Idk what it is though, it's weird to me that people can't do their normal stuff. I.E Gym, Job and then also play D&D with the homies
I guess it's not everyones idea of fun lol
One thing I can't figure out though on D&D Beyond is the
Leveling up system on the character sheet
any tips for someone who's never played and worried about finding a group?
Find a group that you can mesh with really well
Take time to get to know people, it def helps with the game aspect
i'll ask around in some servers im in that im close with most of the people. that would probably work
Yes!!!
Then you have to find someone willing to DM. I have never Dm'd and it only sounds appealing to a select kind of person
I have cool DM ideas but I'm not creative or tech savvy enough to DM
that makes sense.
share em if you want (im not super creative but if you give me an idea to work with i can be creative)
Well you might have to homebrew some stuff but you could do an advanced into the future version of the world, like a industrial revolution era world
Or maybe modern era?
that sounds very interesting! so what im getting is dnd stuff put into a more modern time period?
Or you could do some homebrew races and do a post-apocalyptic game where you make some races based around the way you think the world would end in your scenario too
with homebrew
Yes! Like same base species and then give them nations or something bc yk, nationalism
Like you could go very in depth with it but then the hosting and creating scenarios in the sessions is the tough part imo
lmaoo
I mean ay, I think it'd be fun and a modern era one would be very interesting to do more than just warfare imo
ooo
expanded idea
basically instead of it being a warfare based thing, it could be based in a rural, unexplored place. like colonialism basically
i.e. race could be expanding into "unclaimed" territory of homebrew race and this causes conflict, but it is mainly focused on the exploration aspect
I mean depending on the era you could definitely homebrew in an untouched landmass that has species cut off from the rest of the races we know of now that could be a part of your homebrew of a time after colonialism
yeah, that's what i was going for
Yea that sounds interesting definitely could have them struggling against whichever nation you make colonize the land
Down the land as well
and maybe if it were set in the present/future instead of on land it was set on other planets
Or maybe they make a pact with the other races of the continent to try and force you out
if i knew how to dm i'd do something like this
And then if the party win or lose goes into the industrial era and how the continent turns out
oooo yeah!
This would be tough lmao
yes
I mean you could learn but it's probably fun to build but if the players aren't interested in the idea then it could all go down the gutter
That's the thing you'd have to sell it as that and sift through the players to make sure you get a good group
in theory it should be easy (in the opinion of someone who has never played) but in practice it should be hard, if not near impossible to do so
(in reference to the future colonialism)
For an experienced dm they could probably do the idea, definitely would be tough though
Tbf they'd also have to make a lot of their own new maps, homebrewed races, maybe even classes if they wanted to, like it's a lot to do
Homebrewed items as well and ye
i definitely will expand and ask around, maybe watch some youtube tutorials, but shouldn't it essentially be... writing?
Wdym?
this is coming from someone who has never played
as in writing a story that can be shifted along the way
LOL dming is much different from playing
ah makes sense
DM's got to know all the rules and make everything
A player just like joins and enjoys the story lol
one is in essence controlling and the other is following an outline
the hard thing to do is sell it to someone who would be willing to dm it...
knowing me, that'd be me
Yeee, that's the issue bc they'd have to do all of the work
im very chaotic evil
I don't have the abilities to do that lol
pls help us
with an asterix at the end
please
Rude lol
the asterix being if the dm was informed beforehand
@twilit fjord and i aint got a clue on how to play, we tried a mini campaign, its confusing 😭
and was okay with it
Idk how to help yall😭
my bad cuh
You'd have to tell them before lol
always
No problem just keeping it 💯
im that that evil
How dare you lol
if, for example, it was a close group of friends in a oneshot that was meant to be a joke (i.e. something stupid that i probably came up with) and the dm was okay with me being my chaotic evil self, then yeah, i'd do so, but otherwise i wouldn't likely*
- coming from someone who has never touched D&D

does 5 months of dnd experience and 1 session dming count as a newcomer
It depends.
Generally a person should understand the basics of character creation, combat, and how their character works.
depends how much knowledge you've absorbed but probably not
I don't really know how a lot of the game mechanics work, as the only class i've played is wizard, so I'll probably still be asking questions here.
Wizard teaches most of the mechanics of how spells work, attacks, and saves, as well as basic character building ofc
i didn't know that, thanks
how should someone get into DnD? im really interested but im scared to drag a party back being a newcomer and schedule clashes with work and all

If your schedule is unreliable, consider one-shots (one session) or play-by-post games (texting when you are available). Most tables are happy to rope a new player in if you are upfront about it, and you are likely to not be the only newer player there.
how should i go about it if i want to enjoy playing a longer term game in a live setting like a vc but have an inconsistent work schedule?
There's also Westmarches for people with unreliable schedules where a large grouo of players schedule games at various times with various parties.
Westmarches would be your best bet. A large group of players, and often multiple DMs all set in one continuous universe. Perfect for unreliable schedules.

is that the 40 year dnd game i saw on wired
I don't know about the wired article, but AL is done is seasons so probably not.
yep probably not
So excited
A few, have you had chance to look at the basic rules?
Serious or you trolling?
Ok so how exactly would a chocolate brownie be an adventurer (can’t believe I’m actually entertaining this bit)
Within the games rules and believability
If you are deadset on playing a chocolate brownie, a different system might be more appropriate. I can't think of any off the top of my head, but you could ask for suggestions in #non-dnd-topics
YAY
You can you just have to play something that would actually work as a character not a meme
hey ive never done anything with dnd but ive really wanna get into it i just dont know where to start ive seen streams and other platforms by watching but other than that nothing else
Is it possible/allowed to Druid-Shapeshift into a (static) Tree whose only speed above 0 is Digging which can be used to move/grow their roots?
Is their a way my weapon could be a big drill but a hammer and I mean like a mining drill
Have a look at #learn-to-play and the pins in this channel for links to the free basic rules
Reflavour a warpick
No
You‘ve just given me a new idea how to use my roots
Plants are very strong mining tools
But I guess the answer changes for an only-for-fun-Offline-Party?
Wait how do people use the "4d6, drop the lowest" for the stats
Do I do it 6 times and then put the outcomes however I want or do I start from strength, roll and then go on with the next one?
thank you
Typically you roll to find your numbers and assign them to ability scores as you wish.
Do be aware few DMs will accept rolled scores that they haven't personally witnessed. You may be better off with the standard array or point-buy methods. You can always use them to set a ranking for your abilities should you be allowed to roll and replace them for an actual game.
I want royalties

any indian players?
Hi there!
It will work; One player almost desperately wishes me to be or turn into a Tree so it would only be good for the Group‘s Dynamic
@deep pewter it's kind of up to your dm...
(And I‘ve pitched the plan to do a DnD Event in the first place so there‘s nothing hindering this plan)
Then #character-discussion is the place to go

My bad
S'all good
is it acceptable to sacrifice party members to gods when they completely screw us over by scaring away a person vital to the questline
What's "acceptable" is a discussion for your table
That looks to be more of a player issue than a game issue. If you haven’t already, the group should have a session zero to discuss expectations and boundaries.
Hello I'm new to DnD and after learning the basics like the different classes, races, equipment and stats I created my first character. I'm really eager to join a group and start playing but I don't know where to find one. Any help is really helpful

oh alr thx
hey guys! what stats are considered default or balanced for a level 1 character?
Standard array or point-buy. 16 in your class's main ability score, 14 in a secondary (eg Constitution for an armoured fighter).
Point-buy is an optional rule fyi, not default
So is standard array, technically
And don't let Constitution be under 10, you will regret it.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
No, they're not
You generate your character’s six ability scores randomly. Roll four 6-sided dice and record the total of the highest three dice on a piece of scratch paper. Do this five more times, so that you have six numbers. If you want to save time or don’t like the idea of randomly determining ability scores, you can use the following scores instead: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
Whereas point buy is explicitly a variant rule that says
At your Dungeon Master’s option, you can use this variant for determining your ability scores. The method described here allows you to build a character with a set of ability scores you choose individually.
Ah good clarification. My mistake
s'all good
Generally check with your DM on the method their campaign uses.

Hello Guys, i am currently building my first character but i am not experienced enough to create it fully. Is there anyone who can perhaps help me?
How far have you got?
And have you talked with your DM as to what the campaign's character creation rules are?
I'm currently in the process of choosing spells but i do not know whats useful
+since we all are just newbies really we use the character builder in dnd beyond, kinda anything goes
We try to base our characters on iconic german persons who we believe are funny
OK, so what class are you?
were already getting ready for session 3 lol
i missed out on the practice sessions
The character is a bard with these profeciensies :
Deception, Intimidation and Perception
Instruments: Pan Flute, Flute and viol
All i have yet
It doesn't have to be "a session." But you do need to have a chat with the other players and the DM about expectations and the like for your game.
The quick guide recommends:
"... dancing lights and vicious mockery cantrips, along with the following 1st-level spells: charm person, detect magic, healing word, and thunderwave."
But if I were you I'd switch dancing lights for prestidigitation, and maybe detect magic for sleep.
The guide also suggests "... Charisma should be your highest ability score, followed by Dexterity."
Which is generally solid for bards. Try to avoid putting less than 10 in Constitution though.

i have no idea what to expect for the game i havent played dnd before this
im just going along with whatever is happening
One thing that's often recommended for a new group is to go over expectations and what they want out of dnd session.
While this doesn't cover everything, here are key things to consider while you try to form a group:
- What kind of campaign does everyone want to play?
- Linear (The storyline usually follows a cause-and-effect relationship, where each event directly leads to the next.)
- Non-Linear (The storyline that has story events can be done in any order. Think Legend of Zelda games)
- Sandbox (The storyline has no pre-determined events and no overarching plot.)
- How much role-play, exploration, and combat do you want in the campaign?
- 1 social, 1 combat, 1 dungeon encounter per session?
- Perhaps 1-3 social, 1-2 combat, 0-1 dungeon counters per session?
- What is the desired level difficult?
- Easy, medium, hard, deadly?
- How easily and often can characters be resurrected?
- How much of a time commitment does everyone want to invest in the campaign?
- Have the campaign be 3 session? 5-8 session? 12 sessions? 12+ sessions?
- Should each sessions be 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours? 2-4 hours?
- Would each session be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly?
- What lines and veils need to be established?
- Lines are hard limits on themes, topics, actions someone doesn't want to engage in.
- Veils are soft limits where themes, topics, actions can be explored but not in great detail.
- Are everyone's preferences and expectations compatible?
- Do all players want to play the same type of campaign?
- Is the the type of game players want to participate in, the type of game the DM wants to run?
Expectations like Zero outlines so well above are important so that no one is surprised in such a way that they find really un-fun. But in terms of the plot, part of the fun is not being able to anticipate what happens!
How could i teach a couple friends how to play dnd in rec room
Give them a copy of the free Basic Rules (read at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend that they check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
I dont even know the rules, up to this point all i know of dnd is from yt shorts so mostly haha funny bard seduces dragon
Im trying do it in a way theyd enjoy
Then read the Basic Rules and watch the tutorials I linked above.
D&D is a game of rules so you can't avoid reading the rules if you want to play the game.
What if i make a campaign with a time loop and every time it resets we add one of the rules to slowly transition from our bsdnd to actual dnd
Could that work?
It could! That'd be worth clearing with your group first, though.
Good im gonna go try and possibly implement it to our current campaign cause we aint that far yet
I already know how to do it possibly by using a inside joke we had in our first bsdnd campaign
I recommend getting some experience as DM with prewritten adventures before you dive into the creating your own adventure from scratch. It's a lot of work ahead of you.
so i got a question
would i chose one on each row or just one out of all of the rows?
i'm creating my first character, a fighter
pulled from ddb
Equipment
You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your background:
(a) chain mail or (b) leather armor, longbow, and 20 arrows
(a) a martial weapon and a shield or (b) two martial weapons
(a) a light crossbow and 20 bolts or (b) two handaxes
(a) a dungeoneer’s pack or (b) an explorer’s pack
One from each row.
D&D isn't a linear like a movie or novel because things can change based on what the players do/say so you as the DM have to improv on the fly.
okay thanks!
Im coming up with stuff as it happens and it worked in our first campaign that the players loved
Good luck then.
Autism to the rescue once more
I’m new to dnd and I was just wondering if anyone has a game I can join I’ve played one campaign before but that was just over 6 months ago
with the knowledge gained, would aaba be reasonable?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Check the bot post above!
Ok thanks
I mean if you have vr and rec room on it and dont care about the rules that much yet your welcome to my campaign
Sounds like a good combo!
Chain Mail works best on characters with a Strength score higher than their Dexterity score
But the not caring much about the rules yet is kinda mandatory
lemme check the score rq
We are trying to get atleast one more to join
Don't try to recruit folks outside of the LFG channels.
str +2 dex +0 so chain would be best
Yeah, that sounds right!
I mean they did ask
It's not in line with the server's rules.
If you don't care about the rules then you might as well just make the stories up between yourselves. The game requires standardized rules so everyone is on the same level what will happen during the course of the game.
Thats why i had the idea of a time loop and every reset adding more of the rules
So we all get more familiar with the rules as we play and have fun
And that's why I suggested you start off with prewritten adventures so you can understand how D&D adventures work, flow, and operate.
At this point, you might want to bring this topic over to #dm-discussion or #non-dnd-topics .
Lower you expectations.
what are features and traits? i would, under normal circumstances, assume it means physical traits but since it's D&D i can never be certain
I’m sorry to ask again but I’m really confused on how to find a game please could I have someone tell me?
What's the context are you asking about?
(for dm ask the person if they could join the group as a player)
there are more options
Thank you
creating a character
Class features, feats, and racial traits.
anyone know the height scale for half-orcs?
same question but with dragonborn (as well as age and weight)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/races#HalfOrcTraits
Half-orcs are somewhat larger and bulkier than humans, and they range from 5 to well over 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium.
Would 7 feet be a safe bet or is that too high?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/races#Dragonborn
Size. Dragonborn are taller and heavier than humans, standing well over 6 feet tall and averaging almost 250 pounds. Your size is Medium.
ty!
Size (height and weight) doesn't really affect game mechanics other than your characters size (Small or Medium). It's essentially flavour.
Alr thank you
However, if there's a weight trap that is triggered by anyone over 100 lbs then your weight plays into a game mechanic...
what would i put for treasure on a level three dragonborn fighter?
Whatever your DM says you get to start with
oki doki
Some DMs will let you have a starting treasure if you can justify it . Just be reasonable is all most ask
i asked my dm and he said basic adventuring gear so that's what im going with
Is it only me or are most modules written weirdly
Idk it's hard for me to run them
Can you clarify what you mean?
What makes a particular module difficult for you to run?
The one I tried was dragonlance and it just felt like I wasn't given enough info, maybe I was just expecting something more detailed
I never ran Dragonlance.
What other modules have you ran?
I tend to recommend pre-written modules for newcomers because it does a lot of the heavy lifting.
It tends to take care of characters, level design, and combat encounters.
Because it's an adventure for an older campaign setting and they didn't go into detail of the setting itself
Is like reading a Star Wars short story without watching the original Star Wars movies...
Fair enough
Hello, I am fairly new to DnD (my exposure to it being Baldur's Gate 3 and online videos) and was wondering how I could actually start getting into it? What resources do I need and where would be the best place to find them?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Welcome! The bot post above has some great resources to get your started, and the #learn-to-play channel has even more detailed guides if you want more.
Baldur's Gate 3 is a good starting point for getting into D&D, but the important thing to remember is that they made a lot of changes to how certain things work, for the sake of making it a better video game. So just because you know how something works in BG3, don't automatically assume you know how it works in D&D. Its important to go in with an open mind
Thank you very much! I'll take a look at all the resources listed by the bot and will look at the #learn-to-play channel. I will also be sure to keep an open mind!
And of course, if you have any questions, feel free to ask them here! We're more than happy to help
Thank you! I'll keep that in mind!
Hi! I couldn’t find an introduction channel so I guess I’ll just introduce myself here.
My name’s Anxious or Hyper, depending on what blog you know me from. I’m an illustrator and writer who loves DND and creating stories 🥰
I am Ben. I have DMed like 20 one-shots and have played in one homebrew campaign for a few months, and that's pretty much all my experience. I love worldbuilding and writing stories, so I don't mind that I haven't gotten to be a player almost at all, but I'd like to try getting more into it
Hi everyone! I'm excited to join this community and look forward to getting to know you all. I'm create art and modules for FoundryVTT and other virtual tabletops. How's everyone doing today?

but I have a character sheet and art
Hey, glad to hear you're interested. The above links is a great checklist for getting started with the basics
Figuring out how to fill out that character sheet with all the right values and modifiers is a good starting point for learning how to play
Hello to all. I have jumped on the bandwagon and am wanting to start playing D&D. I am hoping this will also lead to playing other RPGs. My main issue (probably like most) is that I do not know anyone, at least anyone who wants to play or learn to play. What is a good start to play D&D and meet people to do so. I have already gone to game stores near me and either they only have spaces for people to play or no consistent DMs that can host events like that.
If you check out meetup.com and search for D&D groups in your area, you might find something
Anything called 'Adventurers League' would be a great place to start
Otherwise, local libraries can be a good place to look
I will look at meetup.com
hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

Hi, I recently got into dnd and am wondering about cantrips and spells. I have a campaign im in and we're doing homebrew, my race has specific cantrips and spells that are traits of it. For my class (necromancer) it says I get 2 cantrips and 2 spells, would the ones that come from the race count or do those amounts only apply for the class spells/cantrips? (Sorry if this is confusing)
What you get from your race and your class are their separate things, and not affected by the other
So if your race gives you cantrips, and your class gives you cantrips, you get them from both
If you're looking strictly at playing in person, you can see if any libraries have tabletop/D&D programming. Same for any local pop culture conventions. As mentioned, digital sites like MeetUp, Facebook, and Reddit focused on specific localities or hobbies can also be your avenue for finding like-minded people nearby.
Hi! I'm new to D&D and I want to see if someone would like to clarify the rules and "dumb it down" for me please.😁

How?
No blood isn’t water
also line of sight rules
does anyone know good places to play in person for newbies in new hampshire?
can anyone help me learn dnd without any form of audible speaking?
Like a PbP or text format?
like texting
that's how we generally do it here
So, there's a format called play-by-post which is pretty much that. There is asynchronous PbP, which means you send responses when you have time. There is also scheduled PbP, which means you show up for session, but it is entirely through text. A lot of Westmarches (large community games) use PbP along with voice sessions, and some just use PbP.
check out the basic rules. they're in the pinned messages of this channel
they're asking for help learning, not for a game

Just the character builds and the role play and everything about it tbh
Gotcha!
Yee
yea
Hello chat

all the new people, check out the resources here
Hi, beginner looking to rejoin community after a long layoff. Just wondering if it’s possible to join a game as an observer, to get up to speed on how to play without wrecking someone’s game by being slow/uneducated.
I would say that new players are often welcomed, and I'd encourage you to go ahead and try. But you can also ask in the #looking-for-players thread if you can spectate a game.
Plenty of DnD sessions on YouTube to get your eye in
I recommend dungeon dudes first campaign as it’s not to hectic
@woven drum looks at user name I have family! 😄
I've been lurking for a bit hehe
we love our lurker fam
been having issues with games - just had two back to back tpks - lvl 2 dungeon did it
chars were lvl 4, 4, 5
as a dm or player?
As DM
oh
I do have newer players, but they spend half their time arguing - tripping one another up and actively making their own situation worse
im probably not the best person to give advice here, I usually throw really hard shit at my players and just kinda bullshit my way into their survival... granted i dont throw combat at them all toooo often
yeah, its like that sometimes, you in person or
gotcha! i'll have other questions that i can dm you with, but I would unironically redo session 0
boss one shotted 2/3 of party in opening move.
just be like, maybe lets detach for a second
Yeah - they have super strong characters, magic items and everything. They were double the levels too
the party?
yeah - not a single stat under 13. 20 as highest from lvl 1
free uncommon.... 2 feat start
normally 19AC average
I would say just give them hints along the way. Try this instead of that.
oh they get that part - its the combat that drops them
even with +4 mod to CON they got one shotted by boss in 1st round, before they had turn
near max damage roll
thats what I mean, maybe drop some vunerabilities onto the boss, and hint at it.
as for the oneshot thing. maybe tone the dice down as they're having difficulties. It is you're world after all, the book is more a guide than an enforcer.
The DND police aren't gonna kick your door down if you fudge dice
Oh we do Avrae - so its kinda... public
auto rolls damage and save at once - I can't even hide the spell save DC for fae
might just be something you have to change. DDB has the statblocks and a built in roller, use that for private rolls
hmm good idea - I been using the DDB Maps - bit laggy on my computer, but its a good VTT so far
Im not familiar with the book, BUT is it possible for them to have a different opener?
idk, could add some intrigue too, "Legends say BOSS does this this and this to adventures who do that, so why is this one different?"
idk, just rattling
yeah totally - just umm.... they sorta hanzeled and gretelled her
so she decided to pay it back
Where Evil Lives
So glad for content which is challenging - normal 5e books have been too easy where there is not challenge in most fights
Been using them as add ons to the setting I homebrewed - as they are minor villains
thats not bad at all. I haven't done all of that, but i've pulled concepts from other media or campaigns
like, I personally like having one of my possible BBEG's having a demi plane.
my BBEG is Death Knight, has an undead Order filled with powerful undead who were kings, warlords and wizards in life - now they are undead. Cloud Giant, Dwarf King, Lich, a musical savant, and a candy maker turned assassin
One of them just throws giant concerts for the undead and controls zombies, skeletons and minor undead through his musical instruments - going from graveyard to graveyard with his zombie gravediggers. Rides around on a giant undead brontosaurus
Hey folks! Please use a more appropriate channel for discussing your characters or campaigns - let’s keep this channel free for new to D&D folks to get help with the core game mechanics and rules. Thanks!
Quick question—in 5E, what are the rules for attack rolls on a NAT 20?
I don't get the "critical" strike thing, sorry
roll the damage die x2
- modifers
when you roll a natural 1 you alwaysmiss
when you roll a natural 20 you always hit and you also land a critical hit which means you double the damage dice rolled
so if you were attacking with a greatsword your 2d6+4 would turn into 4d6+4
What about let's say if I had hunters mark to add on that? Would 2d6 + 4 + 1d6 become a 4d6 + 4 + 2d6?
uhh idk lol
no
i know sneak attack and smite is doubled and whatnot but idk what kinda rule that falls under
Thanks...
Critical Hits double the number of damage dice for all the dice that are rolled as part of scoring a hit
Hey....
Hey hey!
Never played D&D before. Dont know anyone that has. I’ve listened to a couple of games on podcasts. Really excited to start playing. How do I even get started?
First up, have a glance through the Basic Rules. Pick a class and race, use the standard array for your ability scores (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8). The D&D Beyond website can help you put your character together. If you've got questions about the process ask here or in #character-discussion .
Take a look at the chapters on ability scores, combat and if applicable, spellcasting.
Once you've got that down, check out #looking-for-players to see who's hosting a game, or visit Roll20, LFG on Reddit or the DDB forums. Good luck!

Hello, I have a tiny bit of experience with DnD. One campaign that went wrong, I still have the OC for it, and I got guided through making it. I'd like to seriously get into a bit of this. How should I get started with getting a game?

Could someone clarify how the dice work? I think I know but I do need some clarification.
?tag new dice
Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
Most commonly you'll be rolling a twenty-sided die (d20) to resolve tests of your skills, attack opponents in combat, and resist harmful effects from spells and traps. You'll usually add a modifier to that which is listed on your character sheet.
For instance, you might be trying to run across the deck of a ship during a storm. Your DM may ask for an Acrobatics check to keep your balance as the deck heaves under you. You roll a d20, add your Dexterity modifier, and your proficiency bonus if it's a skill your character is proficient in. Tell your DM the total, and hope it's high enough!
Kk ty I understood it!
That's more of a #dnd-discussion question as it goes beyond the basics of the game
Hello
Hi
hello
How is everyone
Blood hunter is not an official class.
It's in the Wildhunt book... or whatever Matt Mercer's book was called
No, blood hunter was not published in Explorer's guide to Wildemount
Could have sworn it was? I know there is a NPC stat block for one at least
That is correct. There is a Blood Hunter npc/monster stat block in that book. But not as a player option
Matt Mercer released the for free on DMs Guild and because of the terms and conditions of DMs Guild he doesn't have the right to republish it in a CR book (which wouldn't have been the case if he had released it on DriveThruRPG).
thank you
The Blood Hunter is on D&D Beyond because it was a special deal DDB had with Matt Mercer before Hasbro/WotC bought the site.
