How much experience should I have before trying to run my own campaign
Having played a session as a player is recommended, but if you've watched a lot of live-play like Critical Role or Dimension 20, that can substitute for more experience than you might expect
This is only a recommendation though, I know a few that have had their first ever D&D experience in the DMing seat
Oh ok
I'd recommend running a pre-written one shot first.
That will provide you with much needed experience.
Do you currently know how long the campaign will be?
Even if you have very little experience, there are some key things you can do to set yourself up for success.
hello
Hello
This should be fun.
Indeed so
im pretty new to dnd though i like the idea of it alot and ive been thinking of how i could make a type of boxer character that isnt a monk
ive been thinking of a barbarian with a near totem also with tavern brawler as a feat
You can pick up the Unarmed Fighting style as a fighter, if you like?
Ive made my first character by myself and uh... it's something, thats for sure.
i was thinking that too but i want it to be mechanically sound as well and i just feel they’d be lacking if i went with fighter
i was thinking id get some opinions here and figure something out
i dont have anything agaisnt monk or its subclasses its just i feel like itd be a little too easy
im not completely familiar with 5e so again id like to hear thoughts
Ok I have an idea for a bard with a sword the suduses things and then kills them as their unexpecting of him but I'm not too sure how to do that or what subclasses that can be used to make it
If you want options, the Battlemaster subclass for fighter will give you lots of stuff to do with your unarmed attacks
So any help will be appreciated if possible
yeah for sure
A barb that only uses their fists also sounds really fun
Any bard subclass would be good for a femme fatale character. College of Glamour is supposed to focus on charming and enthralling people though.
ive heard multiclassing can be a bit lacking
though isnt there a feat that gives some maneuvers as well?
Yeah, I usually recommend avoiding it for anyone first character
You can take Martial Adept if you like, but you'll only be able to use it once per short rest
true
its just the bear totem really fits the whole like tough boxer vibe with its descriptions
Hmmm ya I just like the idea of a bard that suduses then kills them sort of like a praying mantis
i dont want to be too reliant on feats as a whole but i think im gonna have to choose variant human to choose the tavern brawler as it fits well with the background im writing
sorry if im a little difficult i just wanna see all the options before diving in
Nah yeah that'll work out fine
the resistances from the bear totem is also very nice
A praying mantis like bard build sounds interesting so yes and other skills or items or classes to mix in that would help I'd really like advice to make it
is there a way a barbarian can get a fighting style i know they already have rage but
There's a feat for that.
thank you alley ham what is it?
its okay i think we’re all new here
Fighting Initiate
man youre just helping everyone huh thank you!
So uh ya any help with my bard that plays sort of like a praying mantis would be a huge help
Sorry if I sound desperate
if i find anything with my research ill make sure to try and tell you
Ok thanks
I'll do some myself as well
you could reflavor a pair of daggers as kamas, which kind of look like the claws of a mantis
The pokemon, Krikitune comes to mind as well, might be good inspiration there perhaps
Oh ya my plan is to suduses then kills them when vulnerable
Yeah you should be able to do that in the right situation as a bard
Cast Charm Person on the target, lure them away with a suitable Deception check and roll initiative
then you could spec into the college of swords and get a bunch of cool abilities
Hmm. I'll look into that as well I'm finding a lot of great options thanks guys
didnt really know where to put this but does the concept of a tavern hiding an illegal fighting ring sound like an interesting tidbit bit of lore?
within a unassuming closet door of a tavern leads to an obscure set of stairs as you hear the quiet cheers of more morally questionable people
That is the sort of thing the DM controls
I am new to dnd and I just made a character with dnd beyond because it looked fun can I get some feed back on it https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/122818778
You need to make it public.
ok give me a sec
Is it bad to have a lot of characters made? I have quiet a lot of them
just got it my computer was being dumb
I bet a decent portion of us have backup characters, backup characters for those backup characters, and a third or fourth set just in case
Cool thank you
Fight club
Rule one don't talk about fight club
That's what your thing reminded me of
Why is it illegal?
Who knows about it?
Who takes part, and why?
Who doesn't shut it down, and why not?
Who profits?
Hey
I want to get into dnd but i dont know how to and i dont got any frends who play

Hello
Same
@foggy ice Me too
Fr tho
I did that but i live in europe and the times dont match for me got any tips
Keep looking at it
There’ll be different people posting constantly
Finding a game is not an immediate thing
Not certain exactly but probably on a scale of hours
All g
You could try making your own post
Ive never playd before so idk if thats for me alone
Just mention that in it so they know
Oh here we go, razorwing is here
Expand your search? I made a guide with a bunch of options for where to look for games.
He’s kinda the expert at this
Aigt tnx
Also, just because a game isn't in the same time zone doesn't mean you can't play together. If someone is available in their evening but your morning, go for it.
Look for alignment/compatibility, not exact matching.
Finding a good game is the true final boss of dnd.
That's how DMs are born. They just say "Alright, fine, I'll do it myself."
No surer way to find a game than start one on your own, yeah!
That the thing im busy in te morning an evening i got nothing in the afternoon witch is like 2 am for you i guess
But imma stick around and i might find somthing
Some folks may be willing to play then. And people play in time zones besides the US.
hello chat
how do i dungeon and/or dragon, preferably on tabletop sim because tabletop sim is awesome
Also busy with my exams so idk why i did this now, some like inpulsive thing i guess
Same tbh lol

And you're in luck: there's definitely groups that play on Tabletop Simulator!
(Though admittedly, it's probably not the most popular choice for it. 😅)
Ive had TaleSpire for 2 years and only run 1 one shot with it... I really wish my group had PCs to play with.
Thank goodness for owlbear rodeo though.
im new to dnd and want to make a celric build any help/advice?
If you’re looking for help building your specific character, then #character-discussion would be the best place to get advice on that
I’ve only been to one session, any tips for a newbie like me?
How do proficiencies with armor work again?
If you're not proficient in a type of armor:
- you move slower
- have disadvantage on a lot of things in combat
- can't cast spells
You basically never want to be wearing armor you're not proficient in!
Anyone can wear any kind of armor, but there can be lots of downsides to wearing armor you aren't proficient in, as DOSH just posted. You get armor proficiencies from your class. So a fighter can use different types of armor from a ranger, and from a wizard, etc
Can someone help me make a rogue half elf character please ive never played this game before
Welcome! Are you going through the step by step character creation rules? What part are you stuck at?
I just dont know what works with my character creation or if certain races cant do certain things well ect
Good morning everyone I’m new to the server, but not Dnd and @velvet pond I can help you if you want? And it depends on what kind of rogue you wanna be.
Idk
I dont know the different types
Any race can work with any class
I was thinking maybe a theif but idk does that go under rouge?
Oh ok
Yes, thief is a rogue subclass
So is there any specific traits i should put in my rouge like steath and slight of Hand?
Choose whatever skills fit your character
And your play style
Idk my playstyle i've never played😭
Can anyone vc maybe and help me?
Playstyle just means things like do you want to be stealthy or not. Do you want to fight in melee or at range. Etc.
I was thinking stealth
Thank you
Assassin rouge
Does Skill Proficiencies mean things my character is good at?
Yes
You want at least 16 Dex and 14 con
What does arcana mean?
Preferably 10-12 Wis as well
Knowledge of arcane magic and skill with it
So dont use that with a rouge?
Up to you
Usually a wizard or an int character would cover arcana, but if you want to be like an arcane trickster, then it fits really well.
Entirely up to you, your character might have had a bit of exposure to magic somehow and therefore being proficient with arcana even if they aren’t a spellcaster themselves
a rogue could also have studied magical theory and history for different reasons than to cast spells
Like understand how to take down Magic users?
Oh ok thanks
Can anyone vc?
I just want someone with expertice to look over my character
Or can i send a link to my character?
just put a link to your sheet in #character-discussion
I have a list of player tips here: #dnd-newcomers message

I haven’t even picked one yet, I’m still just thinking about doing one
when casting animate dead on a slayn monster do i get a undead version of that said monster?? or just basic zombie and skeleton??
This spell creates an undead servant. Choose a pile of bones or a corpse of a Medium or Small humanoid within range.
is it a small or medium humanoid?
It's always just a basic zombie or skeleton, but take note:
Choose a pile of bones or a corpse of a Medium or Small humanoid within range.
Hello! 🙂 I am quite new, and I would like to ask if anyone has time to help me figure out how to build my character!
It's a bit overwhelming and I am trying my best to learn 🙂
Thank you in advance 🙏
are you using D&D Beyond's character builder?
human oid 2 legs 2 arms?? small ? like a goblin? fullsize human?? not?
Yes - I feel like I never fully understand how to use fully the character 🙄
I tried to watch some YT videos as well
could we possibly know what you dont understand?
it should say on the sheet. for instance, a bandit is described as a medium humanoid. whereas something like a flumph is a small aberration
ok ty
Humanoid is a creature type, listed in the monster stat block that your DM has. For example, a giant might look humanoid, but has the Giant creature type. An elf or human has the Humanoid creature type.
A safe bet is to ask "is this corpse a humanoid for the purposes of Animate Dead"? Your DM might not tell you... but maybe they will!
echoing @jaunty herald, do you need help creating the character, or understanding something about your character?
Character makin time. Need race, class, and background. Pick your stats, proficiencies and items. All set.
that is indeed how you make a character
Hello all - I've only played 2 sessions with friends who've helped me with the process of creating a character and stuff but the sessions were also very very lax and not serious, are most people very strict with rules and what not? I really want to get into DND but it's just so much info I don't want to join a session to drag people down w questions any advice?
Hello, I’ve played D&D in the past with my dad, we have an old set from one of the first editions of the game. I haven’t played since but I want start playing with people aswell
Do people even run campaigns with random people
Absolutely
In general I would advise keeping with the basic rules, but all tables are different. Some have a lot of houserules, some play more 'RAW' (Rules as written) some are more relaxed on rules.
Knowing how combat works is really where to focus I say, and your character abilities. Most othet things tend to be a little more open to improvising in the moment and are a little more intuitive.

One shots
Guys how to i plot against a chaotic evil dm who taunts me and our whole group 😭
I wanna get him good
Play with a different group. That'll get him.
😭
Lol
Then say how much fun the other group is when you play with him.
Then slowly quit the evil DMs campaign.
Do y'all make a preset characters y'all can run at any given time or do you make a new character each time?
i want to get into dnd but none of my friends like the game, what should i do
i have always wanted to give the game a try and play it, it sounds fun, but nobody i know wants to play or want to learn, i dont know how to play either but i wanna learn
is there a way i can play? or to learn
If you're playing a campaign you make one character for that campaign. If you mean Adventurer's League, that has its own rules, but that's not the norm.
Check #find-a-game
Sometimes people get yeeted in campaigns tho
What?
When they die you have to make a new character don't you?
Or are you kicked out of the session?
Yes, and you'd work with your DM on how to bring a new character in.
The DM may have prerequisites, such as starting level, playable races not allowed in the campaign setting, and/or ability score generation method.
but i have literally no experience whatsoever
wouldnt they get annoyed for me not understanding anything?
You usually don't just roll up a character by yourself and actually play them. They're more just ideas that you solidify later.
There are people who are fine playing with beginners
It's usually recommended that you read up on the basic rules. Then you'll have a baseline understanding of the game!
The DM should be upfront if they are new player friendly. You should read the free Basic Rules to understand the fundamental rules.
It doesn't look like there are any tags in the find a game sections to indicate a game is beginner friendly? Do games ever say they are beginer friendly or do I just need to ask if any seem like they might work?
how do i read those

Yeah, do that.
is it like a one and done game or will this same group be played multiple times?
Depends on the game the DM is running.
You'd need to read the game postings and speak with the DM to know.
DMs can run an one-shot (a short adventure that lasts only one session) or a campaign that could last years.
I don't know
I haven't played in years
Based on the info in find a game one shots would be in looking for community and campaigns in looking for players
like at first i might wanna do the one and done games so i can learn how to play but after i get experienced then i wanna join a group that does a seassion like every weeekend
I understand
I'm a new DM doing my first campaign and my friend who is experienced with DND is playing in this campaign the man has 50ft of flight and 10 ft of knockback on every attack. He is also just incredibly smart on his own. Is there a mechanic or monster I can use to fairly keep him in check? I've been suggested the night hag
You can do that.
all right imma watch and read those real quick
Use more than one monster. Use many monster.
I suggest heading to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Can also just used ranged attacks.
Warlock/bard/reborn
What method is better making written character sheets or on dnd beyond character creator
is it possible to have like a beast master character
or some kind of pet
I threw a royal guard at this mf and the rest of the party jumped him 😭
Your mistake is thinking a single enemy is going to be a challenge for a party.
There's a type of ranger called Beast Master that is exactly this.
ranger is archer right? perfect thats exactly what i want
They don't have to be an archer, but that is a common choice.
explain the beast master part, like what are the rules regarding that, what are the limits, what happens if the pet dies, how do i get a new one , that kinda stuff
and how do i become one
You hit level 3 in ranger and become it. The rules and such are all included in the Player's Handbook, but the updated version is in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. You would need to buy the book, buy the subclass individually, or have someone share that content with you.
and how does necromancy work
In what sense?
There are certain spells and class features in the game that allow you to raise undead. Each individual feature that does so will explain how it works, because each one is different.
Necromancy is a school of magic which includes everything from animated skeleton to clerics bringing people back from the dead.
like how do u become it and like what are the limits, like are u limited to only 2 zombies, are they limited to only 5 mins ( like in skyrim whre u can only have 1 and its limited to 1 min)
this game sounds so fun
For specifics you'll have to go to the books themselves.
You can be a wizard with the school of necromany subclass (aka necromancer).
if a party member dies , can u revive them as theirself and not as a zombie? like a extra life
There are other classes with sub-classes that have the necromancy flavour like clerics' death and grave domains.
I recommend you read the free Basic Rules. It appears that you haven't yet as the rules explains the limitations of spells such as Revivify and Raise Dead.
Sometimes. There are spells that bring you back normally, but they require expensive items and the party needs to be strong enough to cast them.
Generally the subclass will have new abilities unlocked at specific levels. For wizard it would be 2nd, 6th, 10th, and 14th level.
what happens if i miss a session, like if its a ongoing campaign but i have something happening in real life so cant play that certain weekend
does that mean im out or like what?
and inuniverse what happens to my character, is it safe or what?
That's on your DM and the players to agree upon what happens to a PC when a player can't make a session.
You'd have to ask your dm.
The DM decides the rules of the game.
all right
To build those answers, you'll want to have what is called a session zero, where the goal is to set expectations and establish ground rules.
i remember a year or so ago i watched those reddit story videos on youtube about like the dm giving the people op items that were originally not ( like a stick that can summon infinite rats, and the players used it as a weapon , the dm just added as a joke but they used it as a op weapon) those were funny
so in the looking for players, how do i know when its beginner friendly, im still reading the rules but i looked at 5 sessions and not one mentioned the word beginner or friendly
While this doesn't cover everything, there are key things a group should ask to set themselves for success.
Session 0 questions to ask.
- What kind of campaign does everyone want to play?
- Linear (The storyline usually follows a cause-and-effect relationship, where each event directly leads to the next.)
- Non-Linear (The storyline that has story events can done in any order. Think Legend of Zelda games)
- Sandbox (The storyline has no pre-determined events and no overarching plot.)
- How much role-play, exploration, and combat do you want in the campaign?
- 1 social, 1 combat, 1 dungeon encounter per session?
- Perhaps 1-3 social, 1-2 combat, 0-1 dungeon counters per session?
- What is the desired level difficult?
- Easy, medium, hard, deadly?
- How easily and often can characters be resurrected?
- How much of a time commitment does everyone want to invest in the campaign?
- Have the campaign be 3 session? 5-8 session? 12 sessions? 12+ sessions?
- Should each sessions be 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours? 2-4 hours?
- Would each session be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly?
- What lines and veils need to be established?
- Lines are hard limits on themes, topics, actions someone doesn't want to engage in.
- Veils are soft limits where themes, topics, actions can be explored but not in great detail.
- Are everyone's preferences and expectations compatible?
- Do all players want to play the same type of campaign?
- Is the the type of game players want to participate in, the type of game the DM wants to run?
If you can't find any you can always make your own post
all right, im just gonna read all the stuff and come back later to see if theres a beginner friendly one
Hey everyone
Hi
Howdy partner
That's a pretty great summary, Zero.
I am new at D&D

For new players, I recommend playing one shots, adventures designed to be completed in a single session.
For specifics, you'll want to play one:
- Starts at level 1. so you don't to overwhelmed
- Is played using rules as written with no homebrew. So you are familiar with the actual rules.
I would also recommend looking into playing D&D Adventures League. Full details of what it is and how it works can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
Main reason is because:
- It follows a single session adventure format.
- Follows rules as written guidelines.
- Allows players to rebuild their character between adventures.
- This encourages new players to expiement and try out new things while keeping their rewards from adventures.
- Provides an opportunities to play with different players and DMs
- This can help build your understanding of what play and DM styles are compatible with you.
- Play as often as your scheule alllows you to.
- This includes taking breaks from playing and continuing back on with your character when you start playing again.
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Can who add you to play online?
Anyone
they should be able to invite you to a campaign
Where should i send it?
I don’t know how to play
you can probably do it here or in #character-discussion
Hello, welcome to the hobby.
The bot post above has resources to help you get started.
If you are more of a visual learner, I recommend checking out the handbooker helper series.
Hello, im new to everything and my cousins decided to try playing. Unfortunately i got the short straw xD im going to be the dm. Ive read the basic rules (half of it) and i got some ideas on how to start
How does passive perception work? Or any of those passives
Okay I didn't see #character-discussion I probably will send there and I did the sheet using D&D beyond and I really don't know how should I "read" it
Typically you'll want to find a group first.
Once you find a group, the DM while make a campaign in which you can add your character.
This can allow everyone in the group to play on dnd's virtual table top that is currently in alpha called Maps, that is if someone in the group has the proper subcription to try out maps early.
Though depending on the group, the virtual table top you'll use may vary.
alright well i can try and walk you through it to the best of my ability from the beginning if you need
Oh ok i understand
Passive Perception is the average of Perception checks over time. This allows the DM to see if the PCs spot something hidden with directly asking the players to roll, and thus give away there may be something hidden. So the DM would check the hidden creatures' Stealth check versus the PCs' Passive Perception to see if the PCs notice the hidden creature.
@dull thicket You can check out the post I made here if you want to read recommendations I made for new players.
Where?
Head on over to #dm-discussion for further DMing advice.
Thank youu~~ i will ☺️

Also, how does distance work? Ive watched/listened to a couple of dnd plays and they mostly just say 'i attack with my ---' and i havent really seen them use distance as a factor
Or is it okay to like not use distance? 😅 like if they arrived in a room with enemies i can just allow them to hack and slash immediately
Every character and monster has a speed, which is the distance in feet that the character or monster can walk in 1 round. This number assumes short bursts of energetic movement in the midst of a life-threatening situation. The following rules determine how far a character or monster can move in a minute, an hour, or a day.
Full details can be found here:https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#Movement
Combat that takes place on a battlemap where each square is five feet is more concerned with distance and specific positioning. Combat that takes place in the imagination is more free-form about that kind of thing.
You can not use distance at all, but that would be making certain abilities much stronger than they were designed to be.
Most distances are measured in intervals of 5 feet. A Small/Medium sized creature occupies and controls a 5' x 5' square around them. Most melee weapons have a 5' reach (to the squares next to and surrounding the creature).
Think of the battle map like a chess or checker board, which each square measuring 5' x 5' and each PC occupying one of those squares.
A battle map huh, so should i create a battle map for every or almost every encounter they get?
Up to you.
Theater of the Mind is a perfectly legit combat style
Larger creatures occupy and control larger area. A Large-size creature occupies a 10' x 10' area, for example.
You can find maps online, make them yourself, or only do it for really complex combats.
You can always use a large piece of paper or a white board to draw out your battle map. Use chess pieces or coins to represent the PC and monsters.
When I to TotM, I think of things roughly as "zones" - engaged in melee; one move away; two moves away; long range.
Also the bonus moves
As a side note, since you are new to dnd and DMing I highly recommend DMing a pre-written adventure. This will often come with a battlemap that you can use.

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Oh yeah, ive only seen the intro for stormwreck, ill look for the full version
One move plus a bonus move is 2 moves.
At least, for purposes of determining which zone somebody is in.
Dmsguild has some visual guides to help break down combat.
You can find it here: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/214803/Players-Quick-Combat-Guide
Im actually starting chapter 8. Maybe it just slipped my mind or maybe i didnt understand it completely xD sorryy😅
You should understand how to make a character as well since you have to deal with the player characters (PCs) and the ability skill checks they'll be making.
You don’t need to have all the rules and mechanics memorized.
Take your time going over the rules.
that's part of what DMs are for. guiding player actions and mechanics.
imma watch the videos later but i played the interactive demo, its so fun i wanna play a actual game
Ohh thank you for thiss 🥰 i found a couple of free stuff and ill dive into them after i get some sleep xD
If you want to streamline things further you can also have your players use pre-made characters. Dnd beyond offers some in adventures and in the character creator.
I actually insisted that they make their own characters
I thought that way, maybe they'll get hooked with their characters more and actually enjoy roleplaying them
I myself enjoyed creating my dwarf fighter and giving him his own backstory xD
This video by one shot questers does a good job of explaining how to create a character https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=9jrHA-VJDKV_WBEE
It’s 3 minutes.
Same here, i made a tiefling bard, but im still struggling to make a good backstory for it that and also contains that he was a former spy
Ohhh mine was a student of a great armorsmith
What can help with that would be have a discussion with the group together and get an idea what type of game everyone wants to play.
These questions here #dnd-newcomers message are more for a campaign but can be applied to a one shot.
what does the align mean stuff even mean, like what does all that good evil stuff mean
After Learning his craft from his former master in the mountains of Kazel Zalam, Naglfar travelled from town to town until he spots a lot for sale. He became one of the best craftsman the town has ever had, and with his skills as a fighter, he gained the respect of many soldiers and nobles. He spent his time mostly training rookie soldiers and beginner craftsmen as a way of doing good to people. A decade has passed when he received a letter with his master's seal, pertaining that his master died from an attack and his will mentioned Naglfar as the inheritor of his name and legacy. After arriving back to the mountains and paying his respect to his master's grave, he was approached by Rashdna - the master's wife, and was told the details of the incident along with clairvoyance. She then handed a broken sword to Naglfar, a piece of metal that took his master's life. He then stuck his axe to a tree near his master's forge and promised to exact revenge on behalf of his master's name. The axe shall not leave the tree until he fulfilled his promise
Alignment is a (pretty outdated) system of judging a character's beliefs and personality. It's not necessary to fill out.
Heres the backstory of Naglfar Graymane that i made xD i know its long and you guys can actually ignore it if you want
It's pefectly OK to ignore for now. As Dosh said, it's more a vestigial remnant of old rules than anything else.
Can smn explain me how da druid wild shape works ? And where i can See the animals in dnd beyond
Alignment is one tool or axis that can describe your character’s general actions, personality, and behavior. While you can write it down during character creation, it’s important to note that alignment is descriptive (your RP influences alignment) rather than prescriptive (your alignment influences your RP)
You’ll want to hold off on making a backstory until you found a campaign to put them in.
For best results a backstory should be based on the campaign they are a part of to ensure they are compatible with the setting, tone, and group.
Alignment doesn't define your character but the other way around.
You pick an animal from a list of beasts that the DM has. It has to be within a certain monster rating so that it's not too strong, and you get more options as you level up.
If you go to https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters
You can click on the Icon labeled "Beast" to show you only creatures you can wildshape into, and then click on the CR header to sort them by CR
Ty!
your portfolio is based on the Challenge Rating (CR) of the animal, listed in the DM Guide, Player's handbook, or Monster Manual
your druid character should have a note that 'can transform to an animal equal to or lesser than level'. so level 3 druid, CR1 animal? good
Ahhh i see
Ty m8
ah ok, i was reading something about vampires and it said u instantly become lawful evil which it said was a bad thing
it said if u get bit and get buried u become on
im reading it on the dnd beyond site
You become a dhampir typically
I'm really sorry, Ryan, but it's not just 'less than your level', as you have to be level 8 to pick a CR1 creature.
Thanks for the idea
Follow the table to figure out exactly what you can change into
all right
Which material were you reading where it said that? It might be a specific thing for a campaign and I just don't realize.
It probably says in the Monster Manual
Vampires aren't available as a player race. Half-Vampires (called a Dhampir) are, and are available in the Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft supplement
They're probably reading the Monster Manual entry for vampires.
idk i was reading something online
look up dnd vampire and its the 3rd thing
And remember consult your DM if they allow playing a dhampir in their campaign setting.
Monster Manual p297
Of which the alignment change is to represent the new attitudes and instincts coming from having vampirism
Vampires are too powerful to be a playable race (they're CR 13 monsters afterall).
Oh I see exactly what you're talking about. It's saying that if a character dies from a Vampire Bite, then it comes back as a monster that the Dungeon Master would control.
And it has to be buried in the ground for this to happen.
So whoever had that character before would have to make a new character.
so after i make my character is there a place i can post it to see what u guys think about it?
Hello
Hey yall.. Just tapping in for the first time... I apologize for this question but is there anyway I could find groups to join in NYC or maybe just online??
Hey guys i have a queston. If i try to join a discord campaign do i need to have my own dice
If you're playing online you would likely use digital dice.
Check #find-a-game
Thanks
Some websites (including Google) also have digital dice that can be used. And there some discords that have built in dice rollers
The DM will explain which digital tools they'll use.
Virtual tabletops (VTTs), such as owlbear.rodea, Roll20, and Foundry, have their own built in digital dice rollers.
Good to know yall
does dndbeyond?
Yes
DnDBeyond also integrates with Avrae, a Discord bot that can help with playing D&D on Discord (and has dice rolling and other useful functionality)
See #ddb-avrae-help for more info
good to know

thanks i also sorta chose this role by random so
the roles are just a cosmetic thing for fun. They don't affect anything
ohhhhhhhh makes sense
Huh. What is the Dragon Army role for? Does anyone know?
qeustion as wizard player when casting reaction spells like shield or hellish rebuke do you need to say a special word at the start or end of your turn? or can you just cast it at will when dm attacks me ?
Dragon Army and Knights of Solamnia are 2 factions from the Dragonlance campaign setting. There was an event when that book released, where server members could pick a role based on which side they wanted to support. They did not remove the roles after the event ended, so that users could still use them if they liked
reactions are taken when the effect that gives you the reaction says they are taken. If an effect like shield or hellish rebuke says that the reaction happens when you are hit by an attack, then that is when you declare that you want to use it
By contrast, there are effects like the Fighter's Protection fighting style which happen when you are targeted for an attack, which means it happens before the attack is rolled, instead of after. You just have to carefully read each effect to see when it happens
i dont need to say it before hand? a player at my table says i need to say "ready action" at start of my turn to have me enabled to cast a ready action spell like shield
So, the Ready Action and a normal reaction spell are a bit different
The ready action is something you do when you want to use an ability that is normally an action, but you want to use it as a reaction. When using the ready action you must declare what the trigger will be on your normal turn. Then when that trigger is met, you do that reaction
Spells like shield, by contrast, normally take a reaction to cast, and have their trigger built into the spell already, so you don't need to declare them ahead of time.
so i dont need to say any thing before hand? but just cast the spell when dm throws his d20?
Yep
ok

We can always answer questions here too lol
Well I’m also new I don’t know much but I tell you what I do know
To start a game of dnd you will need
•Friends at least 3
•a 20 dice
•your character
•and rule books or you can use your phone
What type of stores Id find that?
The 20 dice
Your video game store I think or eBay or Amazon or a dnd shop
Ohhh! Oka
More than just a 20 sided die
You’ll need a full set of the 6-7 polyhedral gaming dice
You can also use an online dice roller app
HUH, how much?
Wait
I wrote that so badly lol
How much would it cost?
Like in general
Uh I just go to my schools club so I have no idea
Ohhhhhhh
Depends entirely on how fancy the set is
You could probably find a cheaper set for around 10 USD
But again, this is also an option
Eh thats fine, id take that
Ohh alr
Some are dirt cheap some are bordering 30 bucks
I might use it Incase if I lose them ot smt
Ooh :3
Or you could use your phone for nothing
Always a viable option
Makes sense, I might use that for now.
im vid 5 out of 44
Thanks for the suggestion!
Oooohhh, eh not really rn Im just gonna do some dnd characters and might use them later
guys im watching the vid for how to make the characters and for lvls it says to ask the dm but i wont ever go to like a public place to play dnd
so what instead
Your Dungeon master determines what levels characters start at for the game.
thanks that make more sense
If you’re just practicing, start at level 1 and see what features your character has

big question, how do you type an auto timestamp
I have a questions about mounts in dnd
Hello everyone, I'm making my first dnd game with some friends. I'm going to be the dungeon master but I have some issues.
Sould I make character sheets for my enemies or not?
Also I'm still confused on how and where to put certain things in the character sheet, like modifiers
As in make enemies from scratch?
yes
Then no.
If you are new to dnd, whether as a player or GM, you should hold off on homebrewing until you have a decent understanding of how the game mechanics work.
as a newbie, you generally want to use premade stat blocks for your enemies, which can be found in published content like the monster manual, not character sheets
I don't have enough money for the books hence why I made my own campaign
Another way to look at it, would be trying to build an engine part before understanding how an engine works.
And I like my idea I just don't know how monsters work

You can also find some in the DMsguild website
Yes.
Monster stat blocks are different from player character sheets.
A reason why the general recommendation is to start with a pre-written adventure, especially for newcomers, is that creating an original home campaign requires a lot of work that should not be taken lightly.
More so when you are trying to juggle learning the mechanics, world building, creating an interactive narrative, and game design. Each requiring different skill sets.
I see, I will put this idea on hold than
Zero405, can you send me a friend request here for me? So you can teach me easily because I am deaf and I have speech problem
thank you @true musk you've been great
I tend to prefer teaching people here in this channel because doing so can allow me to help the most amount of people in a given time.
Oh ok i understand
If you have questions, feel free to ask here.
I'd be happy to answer what I know and give others to provide support as well.
What questions about mounts did you have?
How I find mounts in campaigns?
Mechanically through spells such as the Find Steed spell, which is a paladin spell.
Other ways, it is going to depend on the campaign itself and your particular DM.
The free basic rules has a section on mounted combat here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MountedCombat
I have starter and essential kit rule books
Great.
I will add that if having a mount is something you are genuinely interested in, you should mention it to potential groups and campaigns.
Thank you I will
Happy to help
Ultimately it comes down to communication.

The above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. You can just pick any 'Basic rules' class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
Then really it's finding a game.
Question is 14 ac bad for a lv 3 paladin?
is below the curve for a level 1 paladin who usually has chain + shield for 18 ac sure
wait why do you have ring mail? you get chain as starting equipment
Oh the dm said we can get a different equipment and gave us options and I chose ring mail..(I'm new I know)
gotta love being a new player and knowing absolutely nothing about DND
i am like basically learned of dnd because a friend does it weekly and i have only known for like a couple months but never actually done dnd so am very new
Check out the basic rules and other resources in this message: #dnd-newcomers message
thanks
I'm really confused about multiclassing lmao
There's a reason it's not a topic for this channel
If you have a specific question about it, feel free to ask in #dnd-rules
If you want general advice, #character-discussion
Oh ok sorry ty
No need to apologise
Are there any general rules that makes a massive impact in a session like an unspoken do and don’t? Just wanted to make sure
Maybe ones that’s aren’t in the players guide or something if there’s any
You're not the Main Character. D&D is a group collaborative game so the spotlight isn't just on one PC.
Everyone should have fun (including the DM). Don't have fun at the expense of others.
Don't argue with the DM. You may not agree with their ruling. Take it offline to make your point. A good DM will listen to the players and may change their rulings if they realize they were in the wrong.
Alrighty thanks
I think they covered the basics pretty well. Not sabotaging the rest of the party is a big one. Collaboration and communication tend to be key. People who ignore that tend not to get invited back.
And I do think it's okay to question something in game, but accept whatever ruling the DM makes afterwards. If they're really wrong, you can look up the rules and discuss it more outside of the session to avoid bogging down the game.
Heck, as a GM I've got a couple people I know who have incredibly encyclopedic rules knowledge. If one of them is at the table, I'll solicit their opinion if something is ambiguous. Otherwise, I'll be clear that I'm making a judgment call, it's applicable for the remainder of the session, and we can revisit it later if somebody wants to look things up.
If I end up with the bandwidth to look the answer up later, I'll also loop back to the group (if it's not a con-type setting) to say "This is what I ruled when X happened. I was right/wrong because Y"
Im having a real hard time deciding what specialty to choose for my goblin artificer, could I have some suggestions on which to choose between Armorer Artillerist and battle smith
Cannot stress this enough. I have a player currently who only wants to debate with my rulings and tell other players how they're choices arent good. It makes it stressful and less fun for everyone.
Armorer is more of a support focused character, and Battle Smith is more of a damage focused character. You should pick whichever one you think fits your own personal playstyle more
and what about Artilerists, is that one any good
i like the idea of the force cannon
qeustion how does the critical hit system work? you need to role a 20 for it right? if so can monsters also crit?
Artillerists are decent as well. Playstyle wise, they are more spellcasting focused than Battle Smith or Armorer are, but their cannon gives them a very strong bonus action option every turn
yes, thats correct
A 20 on the die ("natural 20") is a critical hit, whether good guys or bad guys.
Double any dice you were rolling for damage (including, for example, the half-orc racial thing or a paladin's divine smite); static modifier stays the same.
and what determiners how mutch damage a critical hit does? like say a goblin
Unless you have any feature that SPECIFICALLY changes it to a 19 or 20
Scimitar. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) slashing damage.
Champion Fighter is the only one I know of off he top of my head.
A critical hit would be either 10 8 (if using fixed damage) or 2d6+2 (if rolling for it) [Edit: Thanks, Ratastokr]
When you score a critical hit, you get to roll extra dice for the attack's damage against the target. Roll all of the attack's damage dice twice and add them together. Then add any relevant modifiers as normal. To speed up play, you can roll all the damage dice at once.
For example, if you score a critical hit with a dagger, roll 2d4 for the damage, rather than 1d4, and then add your relevant ability modifier. If the attack involves other damage dice, such as from the rogue's Sneak Attack feature, you roll those dice twice as well.
how do fire arms work?
oh ok ty
Firearms are an optional rule in the DMG. The DM will have a table of firearm options that can be added into the game, and work just like normal weapons with listed damage and properties for each
ok lets say i role a d20 on 20 then roll 2d4 for dagger attack but both turns to be a 1 or lower number. doest realy snound like a crit, but 20 gives me option to roll 2 attack dices
DM may not allow firearms in their campaign setting so don't assume your PC will have access to them.
Exactly. It's also why my table has a nickname for a hit that does maximum damage (in the example of your goblin above, rolled an 18 on the d20 to hit and a 6 on the d6 for damage) of a "poor man's crit"
daggers normally do 1d4+dex. A critical hit with a dagger will do 2d4+dex. If you roll a 1 on both d4s, that's just the way it goes
ok ty
You can always ask your dm how crits work to them just to be safe (there are popular house rulings that are different)
It would be 8, not 10. Otherwise, you're counting the modifier twice.
Thanks; I'll correct it. (Was taking the good faith "double the printed static number)
Yeah, doubling the number ends up higher than average since that includes the modifier already. I usually double and then subtract the modifier once if I've using the set values.
It's rare for me to use static damage anyway. so I don't know that I'd ever thought that deeply into it.
It matters less for goblins than it might for other creatures 😁
But set damage is my go to unless I really feel like rolling damage dice, so I've thought about it in detail
Are fire arms counted as ranged weapons for the purpose of sneak attacks?
They are ranged weapons, yes. Though the DM would have to be allowing them in the campaign and rogues aren't proficient with them by default
Alright just checking, thanky you!
another qeustion about amulets how many can you wear??
1 at a time i belive
version? e5?
It's up to the DM how many accessories they think it's reasonable to wear
There isn't a hard limit. You can probably get away with multiple pieces of jewelry, but you're unlikely to be allowed 2 sets of boots.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/magic-items#MultipleItemsoftheSameKind
Use common sense to determine whether more than one of a given kind of magic item can be worn. A character can't normally wear more than one pair of footwear, one pair of gloves or gauntlets, one pair of bracers, one suit of armor, one item of headwear, and one cloak. You can make exceptions; a character might be able to wear a circlet under a helmet, for example, or to layer two cloaks.
whats stopping me from like spawning it in somones stomach and just like yknow the rest
is there rules against that?
common sense sure 8 fingers 8 rings 2 thumbs. can wear multi necklaces..
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/mage-hand
A spectral, floating hand appears at a point you choose within range. The hand lasts for the duration or until you dismiss it as an action. The hand vanishes if it is ever more than 30 feet away from you or if you cast this spell again.
appears at a point you choose within range. so that means i tentaclty dont have to see where to put it
it just has to be in range
The inside of a person is under total cover
Total cover blocks spells (unless they say otherwise) per the spellcasting rules
The mage hand does nothing inside a creature anyway as it can only manipulate objects.
is the heart not an object?
Not for D&D purposes
ah
No, a heart is part of a creature and not an object for D&D rules.
then i could thereticly use it to cover a spellcasters mouth
Yes but it’s easy to remove
good point -w-
If your DM allowed it. By the rules, that isn't something mage hand could do for any mechanical effect
The hand can't attack, activate magic items, or carry more than 10 pounds.
Spells only do what they say they do
Anyway this is getting beyond the purpose of this channel which is to help new folks get started with D&D
So let's get back on topic.
You're not the first person trying to do this. Someone asked this in #dnd-rules yesterday. The spell has been in the game for decades.

i got another qeustion i was going trough some magick items and i see you can enchant armor to +1 +2 +3 does that also work on cloacks and rings that give ac boost?
A magic item will describe mechanically what it does (e.g. the mechanical impacts)
As a general note, you really should not trust D&D rules you get from YouTube shorts. Especially if they have something to do with “insta-killing your BBEG.”
I’ve seen that guys videos. He has a very poor understanding of the rules of the game, but is trying to advertise it to everyone as completely normal
neat
so are cloacks seen as armor??
i really need to work more on my intelect
They're Wondrous magic items.
Cloak of Protection only offers +1 to AC bonus.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/4607-cloak-of-protection
so enchanting it with +1 doest work ?
That would be beyond the published rules and up to the DM to decide in context of their game.
Because the +1 could refer to attack bonuses. Or saving throws.
The item would have to define that.
How are you even enchanting things?
That's not something you can just do by default
That's not how magic items work, really. Magic items are set and specific items, not a list of effects you can put on things.
Are you trying to create/craft a magic item or Infuse as an artificer?
Hi all, so probably a very common question but what are the basic steps to follow to find an online game (as a player), in particular an adult game. Not adult themed, obviously, I just mean playing with other adults.
Artificer's Infusions are temporary magic granted to mundane items and they're limited to what the features says they can do.
Crafting magic item is something that cost downtime and gold. It's up to the DM if you can craft items beyond what's published (this would fall under homebrew, which is beyond the scope of this channel).
The DM would/should have a session 0 to lay down their house rules, social contract, and guidelines to behaviour.
This is honestly pretty good advice for any game, regardless of age group
#dnd-newcomers message
I agree!
Perhaps I didn't phrase the question correctly; I was wanting to know where exactly one goes to find a game, and how one goes about it. I've been playing D&D for 30 years but never online
I DM to mostly ex-coworkers so I just expect everyone to act like responsible mature adults. Of course, that doesn't always happen and players have left due to personal issues. Remember that D&D is a social game with other people and sometimes people don't always do well with others for various reasons.

I have played DND a little bit as both adventurer and dm but I'm still learning the rules so any advice is appreciated

for all those who keep getting confused by action economy on your turns, think of it like this: you have 3 boxes you can take from in a turn, one is movement, and contains the amount of distance your character can move in a round, you don't have to use all of it, or even any of it. The biggest box is the action box, you can only pick one thing from it per turn (unless things like haste or action surge are involved), these things may be something like attacking, you have anywhere from 1-3 attacks per turn depending on your class and level, casting a spell that has "1 action" as it's casting time, or using things like the Dash, Hide, Disengage, etc actions. Finally, there is the Bonus action box. This box may be empty, but depending on your class, feats, and/or spells it could contain things like an extra attack, going into a rage for a barbarian, the rogue's cunning action options, or casting a spell that has a casting time of "1 bonus action"
each turn you can pick 1 thing from each box, or leave them empty. there is also a 4th box called "reactions" which is something you do when it's someone elses turn and you 'react' to it in some way, whether to counter a spell, make an opportunity attack, cast a defensive magic like Shield, etc
Question if I take a short rest as a paladin can I heal And how?
yes, you can roll hit dice. For every level you gain, you get an extra hit dice
And the hit die is the pyramid?
when you heal with them, you roll it and add your con modifier, and that's how many HP you get back
I believe a paladin's hit dice is a d10, not a d4
Aaaaa thanks that makes so much more sense
The hit dice is the same one you roll to calculate HP
I was just in short one shot and was the first time I took a short rest 😆
the beefier your class is in comparison to others, the bigger your hit dice is, e.g. a barbarian has the biggest one at a d12, and squishy little wizards only get a d4
And I had no idea what to do until the dm said he rolled 4 me and I was at full
but you can spend as many hit dice as you want in a short rest, provided you have enough to spend
3 at most, plus your con modifier per roll, I'm assuming your con modifier was either +3 or +4
Thanks îl note it down for next time
short rests are a good idea for a mechanic, but they rarely get used because no one thinks to spend an hour sitting around, players usually keep going until they can take a long rest
We were in a situation where time was of the essence and in 12 hours we would be turned to stone so short was the best bet
it's the sort of thing that makes sense mechanically, but not really in character
ah, basilisks I assume?
Not really
Lol
I curse put on by a evil wizard
Wizards get d6
huh, you're right, I coulda sworn it was a d4
Wizards and sorcerers get a d6 in 5E.
Is there anyone that is good with character sheets because I just made one and I want to send one privately before I carelessly use it
We're getting away from the purpose of the channel here folk. Remember this is for newcomers learning the basics.
If made on D&Dbeyond or such you can share a link to it in #character-discussion and folk can offer advice!
When you feel ready you can always share it here. Not everyone is up to PMs and off server discussions. Until then, feel free to ask any questions about any concerns or uncertainties you might have on rules, characters and so on.
I'd be fine with it

You said you don't know how to play:
"I don’t even know how to play dnd"
Anyway, check #find-a-game
I have played and DM'd before. Looong long before. 2nd Edition in its hay day long before. LOL I decided it might be a good idea to tune in and listen to convos here to learn something about the current version. There's no way I can play as things are for me now, but maybe one day... Anyway, greetings from the trucker's path, everyone! Thank you all for allowing me to lurk here quietly.
Welcome!
If you want to talk about older editions than 5E then head on over to #dnd-elder-editions, otherwise 5E is the default edition we talk about here.
how do i use arrows? like if i shoot one how do i simulate that on dndbeyond
oh i see now i can remove one
Are you just asking about how to manage and delete used ammunition from your ddb inventory or is there more to it
it was that but i found out how to do it
yooooooo i can roll using the stats button , thats so sick

Same here I am new to DnD and want to learn how to play, I like making the characters but want to know how to play 😅
There’s some good links there to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
Like I here about this homebrewed stuff and not sure what it is?
Homebrew is just user-made content for D&D.
So if you make your own spell to use in the game, that’s homebrew.
The DM has the final say in what is (or isn’t) permitted in the game, though.
And creating homebrew isn’t something I’d typically recommend for newcomers.
Better to learn how the engine works first before you start trying to make new parts for it.
Okay DND roll 20 is free right?
Yes
Do you know how to set it up ?
I’m not sure I can look around for it though
Can i dm you ?
Sure thing but I’m new to this and by dm you mean you’re gonna run the game?
I ment discord dm lol
Ooof..
Where do you find the guide?
Oh OK thanks 😊

Hi keyz
so in looking for players, there are threads that are beneath the descriptions, there you can message about your interest in the campaign and ask to join
however not all dms respond immediately, and some prefer if you dm them with information
Ok I think I understand?
Ngl I have bought a bunch of stuff for d&d but I don't know what to read or do yet.
-Starter set
-Players handbook
-monster manual
-Dungeon master's guide
That's all for right now.
You don't need to buy anything to start. The free Basic Rules is all you really need to get going.
That said, since you have the Player's Handbook (PHB) start with that. The Starter Set has basic stuff to get you going.
The Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG) is only really useful if you want to become a Dungeon Master (DM).
Ohhh okay..
Otherwise, check out the bot links above.
Of course thank you so much.
Can anyone start a campaign? I wanna play SO MUCH
there's probably a lot in #looking-for-players
Only 1
Hello!
I've played a few times before with friends but they helped me with keeping track of my stuff but i wanna be able to do that on my own I use dnd and beyond but it still gets hard for me to keep track of my spells and what i have on me does anyone have any tips for getting better at that?
How do I do a campaign on mobile?
As a player or as a DM?
hello

I'm creating one rn, this game has so much classes and race and stuff, I wonder how any new player create one on their own lol
If you guys need feedback, #character-discussion is a great place to get some
It's recommended to stick to the Basic rules (or PHB - Player Handbook) when new, which limits the options down a bit and helps keep things managable.
i took a good 4 hours to make mine good luck o7
ou thanks
I'm sticking to the basic rules and the amount of texts I've read up until now is baffling
i just read the basic rules first up to equipment and then skipped through most of the character creation paragraphs it wasn't that hard
Remember as well you don't need to read all of it. When making a character think of it a bit like a cookbook- you can read some of the instructions to understand how to bake (the step by step character guide), but you don't need to read every single recipe before even starting (every race and class). If you already have an idea of what you want to make, say a tiefling wizard or halfling barbarian- just read up on those (and honestly just the first level or so), and see if you can make them.
i just read the classes and races i liked makes it a lot easier
Where do i find ppl who are willing to play with me?
Hello guys, I am completely new to this, does anyone know anything i should do? because for now i am clueless on how all of this works and such
Have you ever played a role-playing game?
I only did role-play but no role playing games
D&D is a game where you play a character in a story with other people. There are rules to help determine some things, and sometimes we roll dice to see how things go when a situation is risky.
These links might help you get started:
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

I see, thank you!
Hey guys, I'm going over the introductory demo suggested above. I can't figure out what this rule about simulating a two-sided dice roll means: "To simulate the roll of 1d2, roll any die and assign a 1 or 2 to the roll depending on whether it was odd or even. (Alternatively, if the number rolled is more than half the number of sides on the die, it’s a 2.)" What happens when we assign 1 or 2 to the number?
You simulate the roll of 1d2
1d2 has an even chance of 1 or 2
By rolling any other even sided die, there’s an equal chance of an even or odd number
So by taking any odd number as a 1, and any even number as a 2, you simulate the probabilities of a d2
Thanks! So.. Let's say you rolled in that case, got an odd number, and assigned it a 1. What happens next?
Entirely depends on why you're being asked to roll.
Got it! So basically when it's 1d2, you roll any dice once, assign the rolled number either a 1 or 2, and move on with the DM.
Yep.
I have a question, my character that I created got 5 javelins as started equipment, if I choose to throw it for a range attack, is it gone ? to oblivion it goes ?
you can pick it back up potentially
depends on the situation
it might break it might go off a cliff
DM will specifiy
so safely can consider it to be a consumable
ask your dm
Hello , I am a very very new player that played only a one one shot , I have no idea what I was doing but that one shot was too fun and I really wanna start somewhere but I got no clue where to start or what to do
well Leo i would say start with looking at the DnD Players Handbook and looking through the races and classes and weapons and the simple things for your character, you don't need to look through the whole book but just get familiar with the simple things about DnD

I know but I’ve been working on my character sheet and it’s not professional or anything like that he’s just some goofy guy I made heh
That’s okay - you may need to rework the character for the game/campaign you join anyway
Well luckily D&D isn't a professional thing (except for like, DM who's running paid games), but a hobby 😎
That’s fine I just hope it’s not very drastic because I don’t picture him as anything useful other than a bard because he’s very sheltered………….
Woo... a whole new civilization

Hello! I have read a bit and played in one session (for like an hour) before my DM bailed. So I'm very new and learning.
Do you guys suggest online games to start? Or in person? It seems like a thing you learn by doing..?
That was my previous point. 5E+ is what I'm here to listen to and learn more about, at my own pace, since free time is a precious treasure I rarely have
Is this for new people to D&D in general or to the server?
Oh, good question
Welcome to D&D! The links in the channel pins are a great resource to learn how to play. I would recommend reading the free basic rules up until chapter 11.
Playing online vs irl is more about personal preference and convenience imo. Actual play is usually better for reinforcing the rules that you’ve read than learning in the moment
Oh. That would make sense. Thanks
How many times a day do you guys have to tell people that?
Quite a lot haha, but it’s not an issue.
We actually have a bot command for it, that's how often we answer it. (?new in this channel)
I was about to ask how you do that.
Can see some of the other bot commands here: #frequently-asked-questions message (please note that not all bot commands are available everywhere and we'd strongly recommend using the right-click/long-press Apps-> "Alert Mods" over the ?modping command)
Cheers!
Greetings to all the newcomers! I'm new here myself.

Hey! I am new here! I've already made my first character (after a bit more then just a struggle to understand that
) and I know a few of the basics but that's pretty much all I know about this game should I start by learning a bit more or should I enter a game and figure it out also if I should learn more what should I start on?

That really depends on the circumstance. If you're playing with friends who are also learning, you can just jump in and figure it out as you go. If you're trying to play with strangers, you'll probably have better luck getting accepted into a game if you learn as much as you reasonably can prior to playing (not to say you won't have questions or clarifications).
The biggies for what to learn are what your character can do, the basics of combat, and using ability scores.
Wassup, I’m super-new to all this. I made a character, I don’t if I did well or not, I am absolutely clueless. I just wanted to do this because compared to others my age I have quite the imagination. I’m hella broke to buy anything physical so I do almost everything digitally, and also because in my neighbourhood I ain’t showing this (can’t let em know I fw this). I am in dire need of help on all of this, because on my own I’m going to hit a brick wall at 200mph.
That’s all, I think.

and dont do the same mistake as me, AKA starting off as a DM!
im new to dnd
What do you require help in? building a new character, want to become a DM, ???
new character
Ok do you have the dnd app?
Being new is pretty daunting. I've done a lot of research the past couple of weeks about world lore and character creation...but finding a group when you don't already know someone is the biggest threshold to have to cross. A lot of advertisements for groups seem to be experienced players/DMs with homebrew rules in nonstandard campaigns/worlds. It's hard to tell where to look to find groups or DMs that are looking specifically to help guide first time players through a campaign
There's a dnd app?
i play dnd online and bg3
Yes
hmm
If your under 18 i recommend to join the schools D&D club. If over go to your local tabletop store. There are ussally groups running
It is called dnd beyond
I'm in my 30s lol
hey! me too
Just ask your friends
I play at my local D&D store, 10 USD charge per game so that you can play and gives around 50-80% to DM so they earn points etc that can be redeemed for them and its a cycle
My school didn’t have one so I started it
dnd beyond is it free?
Not everyone advertises they're open to new players, but if a post stands out to you, you can always ask if they're open to new players (and/or how accommodating they'll be). Local game stores, conventions, and/or libraries often have newb-friendly sessions. There's also the virtual weekends advertised under the Events section on the server.
i have none
What are those? 🥲
Lol
I once had to run a group of 23 players. . . Not fun, i reccomend a good 4-6 player group.
Umm go make some then from work or somewhere
I dont think the IRS would like me to get friends so i dont underpay my taxes
What
how did you manage that???
Yeah, that seems to be one way to go. I've only VERY recently started looking into this, I live in a fairly heavily populated area so I'm sure there is something. I have a schedule with my kid that reverses every week so that will make being somewhere the same day and time every week difficult if not impossible
DnDBeyond has a free tier. It offers 6 chaarcter slots and access to the free basic rules. Additional D&D books can be purchased through the DnDBeyond marketplace to unlock additional character options, rules, etc. DnDBeyond also allows you to purchase individual character items as well - anything you buy this way reduces the cost of the book if you do eventually decide to buy the whole book.
Maybe you guys can play together virtually
Adventurers League may be for you, then, as it's more drop-in rather than consistent.
I would be just fine playing over discord and using roll20 maps. Is that a common way to play other than in person?
?tag new online
i play dnd online
Online play is very common. The article above gives a solid overview. A lot of folks strictly play online due to various circumstances.
well i just got it lol
hmm
great times, stupid alot, etc
I was running a playthrough of Planescape: Torment recently and it is what prompted me to start looking into actual DnD play
Custom weapons etc
do u guys like bg3 ?
Is there a DM that I can, uh.. DM (lol) about a character concept? I just want to know if it's something that would be allowed in a majority of campaigns
Feel free to share your character concept in #character-discussion - folks there can provide feedback and ideas.
give me
i love dming
i have 6 mugs and 3 cups about it

Hi
Hey all! Any chance someone has an open spot for a new player tonight? Going through some really tough times and could use an awesome distraction
hi
Soliciting games outside of the LFG channels is against the server rules, FYI. Search through #looking-for-players or post an ad yourself in #750812887697588356 by following the instructions in #find-a-game!
ook Ill repost there. Sorry. Feel free to delete that
Was looking for the lfg channel and didnt see find a game
You may have some channels hidden in id:customize or id:browse.
yeah just saw that
Are bards complicated to play? I wanted to roleplay that type of character so I made my first character that but I didn't really think about if it was beginner friendly, just asking to make sure.
I don’t think there are any “hard to play” classes per se, just make whatever you think is cool
hey guys. i just created my character yesterday which is a dragonborn paladin... but im not too sure where i should go from here.. Can anyone give me any tips to get started?
I've never played before, but have always wanted to
Probably one of the easiest spellcasting classes to use. However compared to classes like fighter and rogue it's more difficult. Spellcasting classes can be a lot for new players.
Oh cool! Thanks!
If you really want to go with bard go ahead but if you want an easier class I recommend going for fighter or rogue.
Have you read any part of the Basic Rules aside from character creation?
just got up to chapter 2 last night
so no? i don't think so
I'd suggest reading bit by bit until you finish. If that's too daunting, at least read the chapters on combat and using ability scores.
After that, you might try joining a game!
okay! Thank you so much!!
Also read all of the paladin and Dragonborn pages
thank you!! i will
Have you looked into D&D Adventurers League https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league#How_Does_Adventurers_League_Work ?
Rangers don't get spellcasting until level 2.
I did make that recommendation already, but the link is a good inclusion!
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet? Because your questions are answered there.
i did but i was confused
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
What has you confused?
like how to get it exactly and what kind of spells can a ranger use and how to accurie spells
and theres a lot more that confuses me not relating to spells but its mainly cause the rules say one thing and my friend ( whos dming) says another thing
Well let's take it one step at a time. What do you mean by "it"?
At level 1 rangers don't have any spells.
Since you're new to D&D, just start with a level 1 character.
Race, background, class,. or something else?
i am level 1
a lot of stuff, my friend says one thing and the rules say something else, and it confuses me a lot
Then at the moment you don't need to worry about spells.
Well, we will teach you the proper rules so don't worry about what your friend is saying.
all right
