Well, I didn't think anyone would show up, but it seems I already have a full party for my one-shot! Thanks for helping me out if you're still here
hye guys im new i've been playing bg3 a lot and now im very interested in d&d
@random flint I’m in the same boat as you but I bought the starter book set awhile back.
I see thanks
Erm... So i heard bout this game called Dungeons n dragons, wen i was in the official Grim Quest server... So, itz a tabletop game like chess eh? What's the main goal here?

D&D is a roleplay Table top game. You make characters to be heroes of a world that the DM controls, and use your own iades and your characters skills to overcome challenges. Should anything be affected by the outcome of chance, you use dice plus the characters skills to see how well your character does at something.
The DM might for example describe a tower you want to get into, and then the players then say what they try to do to get inside. They can try nearly anything they and the DM think might work- climbing it, finding a secret passage in, so on.
Or the player can say 'I want to talk to this character and ask them about X' and the DM will reply as that character and so on.
How do i play this game?
The post up here can explain the basics.
You can either play in person or online, but generally you'll need 1 DM and 3-5 players.
Bruh.. There r so much stuff
You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. Just pick any class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
The real task is finding a game and people to play with which find-a-game can help with finding online games here.
What is PC?
PC is Player Character.
Oh
Do i need to buy a handbook?
Oh
Since you’re mentioning tabletop games like chess and goals I’d like to add on to what Elgate said. I’d describe D&D as a collaborative storytelling game, meaning there generally isn’t any “winning” in a traditional PvP sense (i.e. checkmating an opponent). Though the game has combat as a core pillar, it’s usually in the service of the narrative you, your fellow players, and the DM/GM (Dungeon/Game Master) construct together.
Oh...
It would be good if i had a physical copy tho.. Im not used to reading soft books
And im also sure u cant get it in Bangladesh
You can't unfortunately
If you want a physical copy, you'll need to buy the Player's Handbook
Yeah, and i dont see myself getting it sitting in Bangladesh
The basic rules also exist as a PDF, which you could probably try printing out if you want them physically in hand. Just a warning, it’s a beefy 180 pages though if you’re strictly looking to try D&D as a player (as opposed to a DM) you’d only need to print to page 108

Hey I want to start DMing, I have all the resources to run the Svilland Campains, but i don't know if this is a good place to start. Is it a campaign a beginner could run and beginner players could play as well?
#third-party is a good place to ask as that's not an official resource
okay sorry thank you
No need to apologise, all good

Most of the lfg post I saw are from EST, which is opposite to my timezone.
You'll just have to keep looking
are there games you can do over text without vc
Yep, play by post is a popular way to play
cool
also I aint expect such a fast reply
I see you guys posted up the rules of the game earlier, they mentioned page 108
is it page 108 onwards for players or just like a few pages including 108
Yeah, Discord is a pretty popular place to do it.
There's even an official Discord bot:
https://avrae.io/
Hey let's say for instance that I wanted to start a campaign with my friends who never played D&D before. And I too have never played it....
So any tips on how to get started?

Well, first things first- give the basic rules a read!
that's a lot of words
I'm doing a combo of watching videos and reading, hopefully it works out better
Any recommendations for videos that I can just passively listen to? I have watched a bit of critical role
i've just been listening to whatever has the most views after looking up "how to play dnd as a player"
here's the links tho:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcNgj0KPYuA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TsicWGho7c
first one is character creation, other is all the basics
Helloo
I would recommend playing a pre-written adventure. Ideally start with a one that is designed to be completed in a single sitting, known as a one shot.
Anyone mind helping me make a level 3 character for a 1 shot? No clue how to. Any help is great
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
Havent started nor know how to, Havent played dnd in years and when i did, it was only 1 or 2 games that i got to level 1-2
Gotcha. There's some good links here to get you started, then:

- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
The first few chapters of the Basic Rules cover character creation, and there's links you can use there to create a character sheet.
But the first step would be to pick a race, class, and background.
Did you have a character idea in mind?
I was already thinking of ripping of freiren and making an old dwarf warrior
either that or a human monk, you know, the good old left at the temple and decided to wander off
to me, both are pretty good choices
well try to be a bit more unique than that
why did they leave, why are they a warrior etc
Not familiar with Frieren personally, but those sounds like fun ideas.
If someone wants to emulate an established character, they can.
Especially as a beginner.
long story short, a dwarf just guards a village day and night because he fell in love with a human like 200 years ago
well yeah ofc
I recommend watching the handbooker helper series and focusing on the the classes you are interested in playing to help you decide.
Dwarf is definitely possible, and a barbarian or fighter could fit the role of a warrior.
my arguement was ganna be its a 1 shot and its so i can be refreshed on how to play
i mean, i got 2 hours before the session
Sure, go right ahead.
The videos are about 3 minutes long.
If you've gotta be ready in two hours and haven't already started learning D&D, then a dwarf fighter sounds like a good place to start.
Did your DM tell you what method to use for ability scores?
I’d also recommend using dnd beyond to build your character or using one of the many pre-gen characters.
he said whatever you prefer, so imma just roll 6 d20's 4 times and take the preffered set. Thats how i used to do it
The pregen characters would be my recommendation since you are short on time.
The official method for rolling is to roll 4d6 and add the highest three, then repeat until you've got six numbers.
yeah, but even if its someone making it infront of me or me trying to scrape it together, i would have a greater understanding of my character since i will know the workings in and out more or less
Then you can assign those in whatever order you like.
For a fighter, you'll want STR, DEX, and CON to be your top three scores.
Watch the Handbooker Helper videos, like Zero recommended. They help, a lot.
They’re short-form and succinct.
I'm hosing a server we are doing as series of one shots and a campaign mostly warhammer fantasy inspired so grimdark/adult themes I'm looking for one or two more people but preferably at least one person with dm experience or lots of general experience to help me refresh and bounce ideas
rolled 4 times and im happy with what i got for one of them. 16 20 16 16 3 8
low numbers on some of them, but high for rest
We'd be about 5 in total
#looking-for-community or #dnd-advertisements perhaps?
I understand but given the time crunch, picking a pre-gen will give you more time to understand how the character works as opposed to splitting your time between learning to build and understand.
You should probably use a more traditional method of rolling stats.
@cobalt frigate dang I clicked on that and ended up here
i mean, i already rolled, but what would the traditional be
Doing it in such a wildly unorthodox way from the outset will result in a skewed view.
The official method for rolling is to roll 4d6 and add the highest three, then repeat until you've got six numbers.
@still rose
thats lowkey fire
Sorry for the tag, spam.
My mistake, I misread.
you're fine brother
That’s a very good spread. Use that.
Follow the rules outlined in the links above and the Handbooker Helper videos, the rest is straightforward.
an sword if im going dwarf warrior
Put the 17 in STR, then.
im outright ripping off frieren
Look up "Frieren old man voll" and thats who im planning on running
Then the 12's and 13 in DEX, CON, and WIS.
does it matter which the 13 goes into?
hill dwarf? the more you know
so my friend is playing a wizard with a str of 5, his quaterstaff takes his str modifier which is -3, so does he lose -3 to every melee attack he makes with the staff?
Don't worry about multiclassing for now.
Just worry about the first four chapters on character creation.
Yes, a -3 on attack and damage rolls.
Yep
Ohhh yeah I finished those
ah but his proficiency is 2 so it would actually be -1?
In total, yeah.
ty
A melee cantrip like Shocking Grasp would probably work better for him.
wanted to make sure i'm not screwing anyone over lol
Or a finesse weapon if he's got a higher DEX. (Wizards are proficient with daggers.)
i'm just working on his sheet and putting all the info in
@cobalt frigate should I make a character because I read the first 4 or continue to read ch9-11
For spellcasting spells and combat
You can start making a character whenever you like.

Character creator is in the bot post above
It would be good to know Chapter 9 for combat
Chapters 10 and 11 are for spells
Chapters 12 to 15 are for DMs so don't bother with those.
Hello
Hello
Hru
Welcome!
Hi
I'm good, how about you?
Hello
I'm good
probably a better post for #character-discussion
That's good
Any one shots you recommend?
Lost Mines of Phandelver.
Sentinel isn't part of the free, SRD player options.
Pretty simple, pretty straightforward, a good launching point for a new DM.
Cringe
Also, Lost Mines of Phandelver is not a one-shot -- it's an entire adventure module.
I kinda need it
Then you'll have to purchase the sourcebook it is in for personal use, or on D&DBeyond.
What book is it in
The Player's Handbook.
You can buy it individually on D&D Beyond for $1.99 (or $3.99 for the entire bundle of feats).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/players-handbook
I might have to buy it
Whatever you spend there gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
It is, yes.
Anything not provided by the Basic Rules needs to be purchased in some way.
That sucks 😦
WotC is a for profit company so they make money from selling books. It's been like that for the past 50 years.
You're free to use what's free.
If you find a table to play at you can share books (people have been doing that for decades too)
Yeahhh but the thing I wanna build needs them for full potential but yeah I am make a weaker version without it
I'll probably buy the books I need at some point but good idea

i could use some assistance for spell slots for my warlock
What do you need help with
does my spell slot number stay the same when i level up
No, you gain more slots as shown on the warlock class table
The Warlock Table shows how many slots you have and what level those slots are.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#TheWarlockTable
You can see the table here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#TheWarlockTable
so at level one i have 1, level 2 i gain 2 more?
No, that shows your total
No, at level 2, you have 2 total.
Level 2 you gain 1 more for a total of 2
At level 3 you still have two, but they increase to 2nd-level spell slots.
ooooh ok
thats where i was confused at
so at level 3 i have a total of 2 spell slots then
The Warlock table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your warlock spells of 1st through 5th level. The table also shows what the level of those slots is; all of your spell slots are the same level.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#PactMagic-387
Two 2nd-level slots, yeah.
and i have one level 2 spell slot?
so i have 2 total spell slots. of which i can cast a level 1 or 2 spell
gotchaaa
thanks!
so all i hae to worry about is just using up my 2 spell slots
do i get a 2nd level spell then?
You may learn second level warlock spells from level 3 warlock onwards
You can pick a number of spells described in the chart and in the spellcasting section of the Warlock class description
It also describes your spell progression
im still trying to learn so thanks again
Dont hesitate to review the warlock class description in particular the spellcasting feature
thats what im doing, just trying to make sense of it lol
Hi guys, a question... RAW I know a familiar should have its own initiative, but I understand for ease of things it's common for a familiar to sit with you in initiative.
In this scenario, could your familiar give you the help action in the first round of combat? Or would you need to take your turn, including commanding the familiar to help against a certain opponent, finish your turn, then the familiar uses its turn to help, giving advantage on your next turn?
How would one calculate damage rolls?
Weapons do damage as per the weapon table plus the appropriate modifier (Str for melee/thrown weapons, Dex for range, Str or Dex for versitile weapons).
Spells do damage as per their spell description.
Hello everyone! You can call me Z. I know a good amount about dnd, but i’ve only played a bit with friends. I’m an experienced role play writer as well.
is this a place to find people to play DnD online? Im interested in playing with some people over discord
Check #find-a-game
Note that you may not find a table to play at for days if not weeks due to the fact that there waaaaaaaay more players than DMs.
but this is an active place to find games thou?
Yes.
I would recommend to check other D&D-related Discord servers' LFG channels as well.
cool..... well hell if thats the case I would to dm, over discord digitally i feel like the possiblities are way more then in person
dont have to print maps out or anything
can have it all on screen and what not

As a new player still learning table etiquette.... how much would a rogue class character that specializes in sleight of hand and deceit piss off a GM?
Well are you playing with everyone (DM included) to have fun together or are you playing purely to cuase the DM grief?
Not intentionally.... I just like to play sneakily and tend to play a thief style game in Baldurs Gate
And this would be my first time playing. I'm very new to DnD
Rogues are fine. Sneaky, thieving rogues are fine when they generally are working with the rest of the party and the player isn't deliberately trying to mess up things.
Its a matter of perspective and balance.
I would mainly start off most encounters by trying to swipe whatever the enemy has in their pockets if possible
So if your rogue occasionally "liberates" NPC's coin purses but doesn't do so when failure could derail a quest or cause problems for the party - usually that's fine.
As long as it makes sense and isn’t to an obnoxious level you should be fine, there are players who use it with the party for the party. And then there’s the problem players who just want to steal from anyone sometimes party included
But if that rogue is busy setting off every trap, stealing everything not nailed down, and stabbing every NPC... there's likely going to be problems and the table may kick you for being too disruptive to play with.
Ya I wouldn't be straight murdering everything. Mainly just swiping from enemies and hiding in shadows for the advantage rolls
Go for it then, no harm in doing so
Good to know
i think looting enemies AFTER you win is pretty standard anyway
I'm more of a chaotic neutral with a slight lean towards chaotic good
Hey as a newbie to the game and having not played it what are some traits I could give a character I’m creating they are a aarakocra with a class of rouge/ranger I’m just struggling with some of her main characteristics and personality
I wouldn't recommend multiclassing if you're new
If it’s your first character I would either look up some generic traits to pick and choose from or try and base the character around another character
I don’t know why I didn’t think about that
It helps for a lot of people’s first characters I remember my first was just a generic dwarf barbarian
For my first character I randomized their "traits" mostly for a joke intended to change it but ended up sticking with it
Then picked the flaws and bonds that best went with the idea it gave me
Nice
Hi! I'm not new to D&D as a whole, but I am new to AL, and was hoping to try make a character / play some games... where do I go for that?

Thanks!!

hey im new to dnd as a whole and wanted to know howto get started
Not sure what the command is, but check this list out! @robust vale
k thx
?new
Cant i just watch a yt vid instead of reading the whole handbook thing 💀 i hate soft books
The Handbooker Helper tutorials are just that — tutorials. D&D is a game of rules and eventually you will need to read the rules.
Hello Everyone! A friend and I have really wanted to get into dnd. Me because of Baldur's gate. I know that the rules of dnd and Baldur's gate are different, but both my friend and i are willing to learn. One slight catch though, We're both hands on learners. For us to learn properly, we need to play. on the bright side, we're quick learners. So if anyone plans on maing a game and is willing to have two noobs with minimal experience join their campaign, please dm.
Hey yall, I’m very new to dnd and I’m trying to start dm’ing for my friend group. I have a few things I’m confused about but I will most likely ask them tomorrow because it’s very late by me. I just wanted to pop in and introduce myself
2 in the morning for you too? 🥲
Welcome to the hobby! In my opinion, unfortunately, D&D is one of those games that has such a breadth of rules that it’s not super practical to learn purely by experience and watching. Hell, even people that have read the rules frequently need to go back and check.
As a compromise, it may be helpful to skim the basic rules (at least Chapters 1-4) which is linked in the DynoBot post above. Then find a game that’s willing to let you and your friend spectate, and look up rules as they come into play. As someone who is also very hands-on and who started knowing 0 rules nearly a decade ago, I wish I had started by reading. You don’t need to know every rule to play, but reading helps build the foundation for learning D&D that’s solidified by actual play.
I will deffinatley keep that in mind. As of now, the only reading ive done dnd-wise is lore. i love lore when it comes to really anything, but i really binged videos and stayed up nights watching lore vids on dnd
Hellooo people's!! I am completely new with no friends or anyone who wants to play but I want to play!! So please help!🍅

Hi everyone, looong time fan/player of OG D&D, just now getting back into the online version of the game after 30+ years being away. This is a way I’m looking to get my adult kids (we‘ve played together when they were younger) and now grandkids all together so no one has to drive hours back and forth to hang out…Online is totally new territory for me so help is definitely needed…
By "online version", I assume you just mean "playing D&D online"? (Rather than the D&D MMO called D&D Online?)
Yup
As far as playing D&D online goes, it's actually pretty much the same as playing in person, you just have more optional tools at your disposal
Like, if you all get in on a zoom/discord video call with your character sheets in front of you, you've go the basic D&D experience right there
That’s what I’m looking for…have you seen any of the YT from Tanisjr93 and the tictokers tanktolman, nopanicbutton, and Tacoreacts? That’s the kind of thing I wants set up but kinda clueless how to get the baseline set up.
Ah, where you all see very large images of each other? So one thing about that is that's how it's set up for streaming. What the players are seeing on their own screens might not necessarily be that.
Yo
Ah, well that's more of 'set dressing' for streaming their games, rather than something you need to play online
It can also depend a lot on the online platform you use. I wouldn't go to the lengths they did for streaming.
For many online games it might either be discord (where you can choose to all see each other) + maybe everyone also seeing a map on their own screen if you chose to use maps,
or something similar for VTT (Virtual Table Tops) like roll20, where you can opt to all see each other's camera's at the bottom of the screen, while also viewing the map and chat channel were dice rolls are handled.

Me and my group of friends want to do dnd, but for most of us, including me, we have never played dnd before. Some of us had a game or two before, but we are all just overall inexperienced.
Anyways, I was tasked with the role of DM, and I’ve been studying my ass off for the past two weeks to remember the rules, and I think I get it now. The first session is next week, and I’m about halfway done making a world/story. Anyone have tips?
I think I’m good at thinking on my feet, and I have a pretty good imagination. I’m just a bit worried, because it’s many of us’s first time, and I want to make sure that first time is good. We are doing it online despite me wanting to do it irl, but our schedules just don’t line up that way. I’m a bit nervous
remember that DnD is meant to be fun, you're playing with your friends and its just a game - go with the flow and try to have a good time
It's just that our group members are extremely different. Sure we're all nerdy, but to very different degrees. One person wrote 12 lengthy paragraphs of backstory and is heavily invested in the lore/their character, while the other guy has a very vague backstory that is a single sentence long and is just here for the jokes and vibes. We all are interested in completely different things, and I want to please everyone by having both a big story with deep lore, but also having a "frick it that sounds fun" mentality. I like to think that I'm doing a good job preparing, but I am struggling with a few things like determining the length of the story, getting all my players to complete their backstory to fit in my world, having fun, engaging and balanced combat with enemies, etc.
You will make your life easier if you start with a pre-written adventure.
That will enable you focus your time on building your DMing skills and understanding of the rules and mechanics over doing all that and writing an adventure and designing combat encounters and challenges.
Hmm. It might be a bit too late for that, but I can just keep my story nice and simple so I can focus on the other parts of being a dm
Not really too late for that.
Your group can start by playing pre-written adventures designed for a single sitting called one shots.
Hmm that’s true. Creating a simple character only needs like an hour at most, it isn’t too much to ask of my players
I can just keep everything else on hold and do the oneshot
You can simplify it even further, play these one shots with pre-gen characters. Every one shot you play, the group members can take turns DMing.
Problem is, our schedules are really wack. We can only really do one session every fortnight. Perhaps having one shots will solve this issue, since not everyone has to be there for the simple little adventure… hmm
Use those one shots to make figure out group dynamics, setup boundaries that people will need, and figure out how much of a time commitment is everyone wants to put in.
Cool. Is it ok if I wrote the oneshots? Writing a story is something I do enjoy
Writing is only one part though.
Game design is another.
Hmm true
Speaking of, with oneshots, how do you handle levels
That is the biggest thing I’m concerned about. It’s the type of thing I think I’d be more confident in if I had more experience DMing, but as I do now, I have no frame of reference as to how to handle leveling
More reason to run pre-written adventures, so you build a frame of reference.
There are two ways of leveling up, xp and milestone. For ease of use, start with milestone. This method just says you level up when the DM says you level up. Usually this is when the group completes an adventure or reaches a point in the campaign .
Yea I figured that would be the best for leaving up. My players are lazy, and they might forget to keep track of xp

Ok
The intro adventure is free to claim
Lightning keep and prisoner 13 are also pre-written adventures.
I’m not made of money, so I only have PHB and a few sets of dice. Is this enough, or do I need to get DM’s guide and whatnot too

Oh I love Jane
Start with the pre written adventures. And use that to help the group figure out what type of campaign would best for your group.
#dm-discussion would be the place I recommend going to for DMing advice.
Ok
Happy to help.
Welcome to the hobby
Have fun.
I hope players are as chaotic as they say

The bot post above has what you need to get started
I have a question, what's the difference between DnD and DnD Beyond?
D&D Beyond is a online toolset that helps you with Character Management and an online library for the books you buy. It's just there to help you play D&D
Only components that say they are consumed are used up
As for the glowworm for dancing lights, it doesn't state if it kills the glowworm or not, it's down to you the player
just starting out and reading the character handbook all it once seems pretty daunting, any fun chapters i can start with after reading the intro?
Take a glance at the sections for races and classes, see what sounds like fun.
bet, thanks
If you had to kill a glowworm to cast the spell, you'd need a new glowworm every time, meaning the component would essentially be consumed. Since the spell doesn't say it's consumed, that seems unlikely.
Or use an arcane focus to cover unless the component has a material cost, ( if I read phb correct if not ignore this)
That's right!
I just want to play so bad
Is there a place where i can find a rulebook?

Check out the links above!
on dnd beyond, do i have to pay for different adventures?
That depends! There are a few free adventures, but most are available for purchase.
So does that mean i will have to do the same run over and over again if i dont pay ??
most of the stuff on dnd beyond is paid for but some stuff is free, it’s an awesome tool though so if u’r serious about dnd n can afford it i recommend buying the books from them as u also unlock stuff on the site
u can always come up w ur own adventure
Can somone help me with my backs story for my charcter in dnd
Or get other free adventures off DMsGuild. That website has a lot more adventures than DDB
The folks over in #character-discussion can help you out!
sure, thought of the general concept u want the character to have n got a background figured out yet?
Certainly! Pop over to #character-discussion and tell us what you have so far.
Yeah still need to get a idea for a backstory
Is there an app that can generate a DM whilst i play with my siblings irl?
.....No.
what background does ur character have?
Ah
There are no apps to be a DM for you
nah but if u know how to dm u might be able to get a chatbot to do specific steps for u
Would chat gpt be able to do the trick?
but since u’r just playing w ur siblings n it’s not an official game w strangers, u can all take turns and dm for each other to make sure it’s fair
my friend plays w chatgpt sometimes so, however u gotta phrase ur questions in a way where u’r just asking for descriptions/numbers
Chat GPT might be able to give you some things, like describing locations. But it's not going to do everything that a DM normally does
have you already posted to #750812887697588356 ?
And given how often my players do things that no sane person would do in a million years, I'd be surprised if a bot could keep up
Would that work? I want to play irl with my brother but the DM would be on discord
you can post and find out.
Plenty of folks play online
if u’r only playing w ur brother then i think that’s a case where the dm having a character would be fine since it’s someone u’r close w so the game probably wouldn’t be too fancy and there’s a smaller risk of miscommunication
Is DnD beyond online?
yes
DnD Beyond is a library for character sheets and book information, not an actual platform to play on
So yes and no
you can play with DnD beyond online. it has dice rolling, combat/encounters, items, maps
Im confused-
"D&D Beyond" is not the actual game of "D&D." They are 2 different things
dnd beyond is just a tool to help better organize ur dnd game
D&D is the game we play. D&D Beyond is a website that can be used as reference material and other tools to help facilitate the game. You don't use it to "play" D&D, anymore than you would a paper rulebook or character sheet.
u don’t need anything to play the actual game, i don’t even have the books
Its just im new and being a DM would be a problem
Plenty of people have started the game as a DM.
there r a bunch of super helpful tutorials on youtube
If your group knows you’re all learning together, you’ll be fine.
n again, if u’r only playing w ur brother then there aren’t rlly any consequences to messing up or doing something wrong
No matter how long you’ve been playing, mistakes can and will happen. That’s fine.
hell, a lot of times when planning campaigns me n my friends just got lazy n came up w our own rules. there’s no right or wrong way to play, rule of thumb is if everyone’s fine w it then it goes
As long as everyone’s having fun, you’re doing it the right way.
Also if you’re looking to play in person, you can visit your local library and tabletop game shop, as may host dnd games.
Hi!! I'm very new to d&d and know absolutely nothing about it other than that it's a roleplaying game

Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Ooo ok thank uu!!
Which class are you?
Ritual spells aren't separate from your prepared. They're just prepared spells you don't expend a spell slot but rather spend 10 more minutes casting.
Unless you are a wizard
Yeah, that's why I asked about their class.
Only for wizards
Wizards are the exception to the rule. They can cast spells from their spellbook as a ritual, not needing to prepare them.
Also, you're almost always going to have more spells in your book than you can prepare. So most people have a few spells they always take and then swap the others based on situation
So as a wizard, you would have a list of known spells (all of the spells in your spellbook) and prepared spells (to be expended by spell slots).
at the end of a long rest
For example, you may not warrant preparing Identify. During a break, you can spend 10 minutes plus the spell's casting time to cast Identify as a ritual without needing to preparing and expending a spell slot.
Yes, like other spellcasters.
Not necessarily. You're probably going to prep different spells if you know you might be exploring a dungeon vs sailing in a ship
For example
Copywrite laws
What do you mean copies? If you're talking about the version with and without the person's name, than yeah it's just a copywrite thing. They're the same spell mechanically
Leomund is the archmage who came up with that spell.
Tiny Hut is the SRD version of the spell (WotC owns the trademark of the name "Leomund")
"Leomund's Tiny Hunt" and "Tiny Hut" are the same spell. But one is available for public use and the other is the trademarked by wizards of the coast
Similiarly with spells named with Tasha, Bigby, Mordenkainen, etc.
Don't be mean to poor Leomund 😰
A lot of these spells goes back to the 1E days (actually before that) where the named archmages were actually PCs of Gary Gygax's campaign.
But I digress...
Has anyone made Rambo arrows for a hunter using glass vials and acid?
Thanks

Have you tried any other channels?
is there anyone who would be able to help me with dnd. maybe in vc?
What did you need to know?
Did you read the free Basic Rules?
well making a first character for my dnd club
This server does not have any VC channels. But we’re all more than happy to help in this text channel
okay good to know
Have you picked a race and class?
well thats my problem. i dont know what to pick to make my character. i am planning to make a summoner who can heal but if thats not possible then some kind of healer
well you might like cleric, they can summon a dude or 2, and their main thing is healing and radiant damage pretty much
legit summoning is more of a wizard thing
and for a race, you dont need to think TOO hard about it, if you just want a simple experience with nothing out of the ordinary you can go with human since they provide a small buff to everything
i see. what kind of things do druids do?
but overall, kinda magic dude who turns into a bear or tiger or the sort
they can also do more nature stuff, but the most recognizable stuff is animal man
what kind of playstyle do you want pretty much, melee, ranged, that kinda stuff
probably character which can support, buff and heal. i assume this would make it ranged?
nah supporting and healing is different, but would you prefer more melee focus or ranged focus
do you want to support people and then bash things or stay away while keeping people a bit less dead
sorry could you explain these
so basically, do you want to hit people with a sword or shoot them with magic and such
rather shoot
ill do that. once i am done ill message you again

this should work for you

I’ve never played a spell caster before and am creating a paladin. Does the damage/dice from divine smite double on a crit?
It does indeed!
That’s insane!
If I crit three attacks at twentieth level I can do an extra 34d8 damage!
Many things are possible at lv 20 but most games never get there
And the chances of three crits are…well, that isnt much
also, smite isnt a spell btw
How does a gnome sailor bard or cleric who has an unhealthy obsession over the ocean sound for a character? Im just spit ballin here
Sounds fine
how would a noble turned rogue ? just asking for insperation
Bruh reading these replies make me wanna geek out
Get disowned, do crime
#character-discussion will be able to help you out with character ideas
But nah fr I’m hella interested in the divine aspects of the dnd world such as the aasimar species and elven genealogy, the war between the malevolent forces of the 9 hells
Can someone help me, i tried editing a submission for a Looking for players post, and as soon as i pressed submit to finalize my edits, it said "something went wrong try again" i tried again and the same thing happened
This probably isn't the place for it but i think I'm interested in doing one session encounters? I'm not confident as a dm.

Hey I’m on the dnd beyond app. And in a the market place. What are sourcebooks and adventures exactly? Like what am i buying lol.
Sourcebooks are like rule books - so they have additional rules and optional rules to help add more options to the core rules.
Adventures are prewritten D&D adventures - basically D&D games with all the NPCs, story lines, and setting lore written and ready for a Dungeon Master to pickup and run for the group.
and we can create a handbook right ?
What does Play by post mean?
Play by post means you're purely playing by chatting
i am still messing with making my character can anyone help ?
Of course, what's the matter?
It means playing D&D by posting/sending messages to each other - bascially not voice or in person.
about class
I'm not sure what you mean by "create a handbook" here. Can you clarify?
If you're quite new I'd recommend you not to subclass
Sorcerer is not a wizard subclass and yeah, multiclassing is not recommended for new-to-D&D folks.
It makes chaarcters much more complex usually.
You're probably starting at 1st level, so when you get more levels you can still decide to multiclass
ok
what about the spells ?
You determine what spells you know for each class individually
I can have like theoriticaly infinfe known spell right ?
i mean, i can just put all avaiable spell in level 1
and 4 cantrips
And the amount of spell slots you have is determined the following way:
Add together the levels of all your spellcasting classes (halving your paladin and ranger level and only taking a third of your fighter and rogue levels). Then you follow a table you can find in the PHB on page 165
Depends on your classes. As a wizard/sorcerer nope, not infinite.
No - sorcerers can only know the amount of spells as noted in the class description (there is a table that describes how many spells a sorcerer can know per class level)
The sorcerer table shows how many spells you know at each level.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/sorcerer#TheSorcererTable
A level 1 sorcerer knows four cantrips and two 1st-level spells.
Link to the Sorcerer class information in the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Sorcerer
If you’re using point buy, yeah.
As a sorcerer, you want your highest three scores to be CHA, CON, and DEX.
what does CON do btw ?
Try to aim for even-numbered scores to get the most out of it.
It increases your max HP, and helps you maintain concentration on spells.
and adding to that, many enemies or traps will cause you to make Constitution saves to avoid nasty effects, like poison
Overall just your endurance. A few examples being:
- max HP
- holding your breath
- going without sleep
i set my race as a high elf so "without sleep" is not really necessary
ohhh, ok
freezing cold is also a con save
generally, every character benefits from having at least a decent CON score
so here is my overal stats
STR 8
DEX 14
CON 13
INT 13
Wisdom 13
CHA 13
not counting bonus stats
seems good
what is the "other modifier" and "override score" mean ?
Both useful if your DM tells you something affects your ability scores
ty
what about the background part - which hurt my brain a lot
It's something your character has done in the past
with an extra language, what should it be ?
And might still be doing to some extent
hmmm
extra languages are best discussed with your DM, but you can chose one of the more commone ones if you arent sure for now
Again, I’d really recommend going for even-numbered scores.
A 12 and a 13 both get you the same ability score modifier (+1).
So changing a 12 to a 13 doesn’t really do much for you.
But if you drop two of those to 12 and bump one to 14, you’ll be coming out ahead.
I’d recommend using #adventurers-league for any AL questions.
Ok
hey
ty, i changed them to
STR 8
DEX 12 (total 14)
CON 12
INT 13 (total 14)
Wisdom 14
CHA 14
is this better ?
hey, welcome to the server!
is there like a standard world for DnD? specifically DnD 5e that i should know of? or is every world made up?
also, hi haha
I’d do 14 CON over INT, but yeah, much better!
There are loads of official worlds you can use like "The Forgotten Realms", but a lot of experienced DMs will create their own
hi
thank you. the reason for asking is, i just asked to join a group and i actually found one. i got a little bit of story to base my character off (in case i actually get picked to join the group) but its not very informative. at least to me. it felt like the world and how he describes the "plot" is put in a way like im supposed to know the world
he mentioned Marshwater and the Illian Ilse and i should make a backstory that would make sense why im headed there. i unfortunately dont have a clue of that world since my only campaign that i played was self made. if you could send me a link to a website so i can do some research, that would be much appreciated
Hello remember if you got any questions just ask:)
after create a char, we went to the char sheet and join in a forum to play right ?
if it says "...when you make a melee weapon attack..." does that mean it has to hit?
Depends on the context and we'd need more info to determine if it means the attack has to hit or not.
I don’t know those place names. Do you know if the DM has set it in a published world like the Forgotten Realms setting?
Might be the DM’s own world.
i really dont know. one of the players handled the "recruitment" because the dm is still at work. i will wait until he is available but i very much appreciate the help
Can you cast heat metel on your weapon or your self as a warforge
Hello
More of a rules question, but shortly; on your weapon yes, but you'll just hurt yourself
But you yourself are not an object, so no (you'd just be hurting yourself anyways)
For future reference there's #dnd-rules
im confused about the dice still. on the ref sheet for dnd beyond it says hit/dc and then one of my attacks has it as +5.
and then next to that it says damage and the damage for the same move is 1d6+3.
what is that +5 for?
also how do you know if you land a hit or not? cuz i saw somewhere else that you're supposed to roll a d20 for that as well? idk its all confusing me lol
this is all best explained with a filled out character sheet and a fight scenario (like a tutorial)
Basically, when you want to hit something, you press the +5, it will roll a d20, tell you a number, then if you’re in a session, you ask if it hits. If yes, roll the 1d6 + 3, that’s the damage
wait so the +5 is what i need to land to get a hit?
The actual roll is 1d20+5
The total needs to equal or beat the target's AC. So the DM will tell you if you hit
oh okay.
D&D Beyond just doesn't bother to list the 1d20 part of it
that one explanation actually cleared a lot up for me
the +5 is just added to your damage. in this case you roll a d6 and whatever you get you add another +5 and thats your total damage. example: you rolled a 3. now you add +5. your total damage is gonna be 8
That is incorrect in this scenario
wait i thought thats what that+3 was tho
It is
my bad, i missread the + numbers
cuz my damage says its a d6+3
That is correct, for whatever weapon you're using
oh you're all good lol
yeah, i actually meant to say that. my bad
you're all good lmao just making sure
so that +5 is added to a d20 to see if it hits or not then
based on the ac of the mon
Yeah the +5 is added to the d20 to hit
okay. thank you! i've been searching onlline the past 20 minutes trying to find an explanation and every time it was some really weirdly worded explanation
how do i learn to play, and how do i find a game?
the thing that helped me was actually BG3 and watching critical role to get a simple understanding on how DnD is played. also playing a game helps a lot. to find a game you have to go to #looking-for-players
hello, you learn to play by reading the rules (or at least the first couple of chapters). you can find games locally in game stores or with family/friends or at conventions etc.
online, you can find games on site like roll20 or reddit /lfg, or here in #find-a-game

@dusky flicker say hi, bestie!
Oh yeah hello I’m new to dnd and I would gladly like to join a party
I just helped her finish her first character (a wood elf ranger)
Im so proud of it thanks for help Lexi
No problem!
hi i am new
May have gottent he command wrong haha
Heya, feel free to ask questions and check out the pinned messages
can somody just give me a short run down of how to play the game
The game is run by a dungeon master and the players create characters that participate in the story
Basic synopsis
The Dungeon Master (DM) is the referee who presents situations to the players to act/react to.
Did you read the free Basic Rules yet?
i am reading them now
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
thx
Ok, so I was wondering about the basic damage , spell, melee, and piercing vs armor class
As I understand it, there are two types of spells, attack roll and spell save
AC doesn't change damage dealt.
How an attack works is you roll your attack (1d20+ Prof bonus + ability mod) and compare that against the enemy's AC. If it meets or beats it you hit.
Then you roll damage, which is based on the weapon or spell used.
See here for more: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MakinganAttack
Ok, Wizard class has +5 intelligence under saving throws, which I think is the total combined of +3 intelligence and +2 proficiency bonus
Spell Saves instead have a DC that the enemy has to beat.
Say your spell DC is 15, and it's a Wisdom Save. The enemy must roll 1d20+Wisdom Mod +(Prof bonus if proficient in wisdom saves). If that meets or beats the DC, they succeed on the save. If not, they fail.
Spells may have reduced effects even on a successful save, and take full effect on a fail.
Spells will either have a spell attack (which you roll against the target's AC) or it requires the target to roll a saving throw against your spell DC.
In this case yes, your Spell attack and Intelligence Saving throw is the same number wise.
Because both are 1d20 + Intelligence Modifier +Proficiency bonus.
Because a wizard uses intelligence as their spellcasting modifier and is proficient in their spell attacks, and because they are proficient in intelligence saves.
So my magic missile would deal 1d4 + 1 damage at lvl 1 character
Yes, but because the spell says so. This isn't connected to level. At any character level a magic missile dart deals 1d4+ 1 force damage.
OK, yeah, not on character level, but can be cast from higher level spell slot
Some spells can increase in damage by upcasting them (using a higher level spell slot, which you unlock at higher levels), or add your spellcasting modifier to the damage, or just scale with level (many cantrips do).
Magic Missile 'upcast' increases the amount of darts it fires, but each dart always does 1d4+1 force damage.
Are there online calculators that help with combat damage
I'm just trying to play dragons of Stormwreck isle set with the kids
I would love to learn the mechanics, but would be good to have some type of calculator online to double check the numbers
Does DnD Beyond perform calculations if we play there?
Depending on how you play a VTT might handle this for you, or you can use a calculator.
And you can make quick notes. Like Magic missile makes 3 darts, so that can just be 3d4 + 3 if you want. Or roll a d4 once and x3 +3.
And yep Dndbeyond can handle attack and damage rolls for you.
Does DnDbeyond have maps where we can move characters and creatures around , like a terrain map with a grid
D&D Beyond has a virtual tabletop (VTT) called Maps. Right now it's in alpha and only is accessible for those with a subscription.
DnDBeyond is creating a Map tool - it's currently in Alpha and locked behind a Master Tier subscription - see https://www.dndbeyond.com/games to learn more
I have found some printable maps for The Stormwreck Isle terrain, those should work great
Or you can do it the old school way and draw the maps on paper or white board.
Playing with 3rd grader, they lose interest if the action stops. Also how many feet away do I put away the creatures vs character speed etc... it quickly snowballs
hey im new i bought my first game or something. today. its the D&D starter set.
Which one is better Roll 20 or DnD Beyond for basic games?
D&D isn't constant combat. That's for the best since at level 1 to 4 the PCs are very squishy.
D&D is a mix of combat, exploration, and social interaction.
PCs move 30 feet per round (25 feet for Small-size PCs). Most monsters move 30 feet per round.
Yes I understand, but please put yourself into shoes of brand new players
Roll20 is a virtual tabletop.
D&D Beyond is a tool for character sheets and digital books (they have the Maps VTT but that's for Master Tier subscribers only).
This is moving to #dm-discussion territory if you want DMing advice.
As a new player with kids, I will have to be both a player and a DM
Each square on a battlemap is usally 5'x5'.
So a PC who has a 30 feet speed will move 6 squares.
You can have tokens (coins, chess pieces, etc) to represent their character on the map.
Yes, I understand all that, I'm just looking for resources where I can focus on storytelling and not on logistics. So definitely will be printing out maps and tokens
Think Dragons of Stormwreck isle level, once we get through that things will become a lot easier
Thanks for the input!
I'll try out both Roll20 and DnD Beyond to take some of the learning curve off
Again, #dm-discussion is a better place to ask about DMing because this is moving out of the scope of this channel.
Hey whats the best way to find games that accept new players?
new to D&D myself (coming from BG3) but most game based servers have an LFG channel
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Greetings! I am Paladin Daniel, I roam the land spreading joy and freedom in the name of Sun God Nika!
Hello :3
Salutations! I’m pretty new to dnd but I think I’m going to enjoy where this journey takes me

Welcome, folks!
I mean a lot of dnd players want a more mature audience and I can't blame them tbh, I mostly try to find groups that are within my age to try to start a dnd campaign with. Good luck.
Not to mention that adults are generally (and rightly) discouraged from closely socializing with random minors on the internet.
I would recommend looking into youth dnd programs with your local library and game shops.
Welcome! If you’re looking for a group to join, #find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
I saw that but idk how the commands work at all
Hiya :3
Just type /looking, select the one you want from the menu that appears, then hit send.
it's described in #find-a-game . you run the /looking command in any channel, with the appropriate inputs
Hello! I play DND with a few friends probably once or twice a month and always find myself wanting to play more and more every time. Im still fairly new only been playing about 3 months or so how do i find a group to play with, the looking for players groups are always scheduled, im just looking for a few people to see if i like playing online or not.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Besides checking here, you can skim the guide I made for alternative routes for finding folks to game with.
what race shoudl i make a paladin what are some cool ones
Which ever one you find interesting to play.
uidk what to do though because i have not played before
i have not made any characters but we are just going to start playing during the summer so i need to play paladin
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
no everything i know about dungeons and dragons is from baldurs gate
BG3 isn't the same as 5E D&D.

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
D&D is a game of rules so you will eventually need to read the rules.
ok
also i was going to play wizard but i think we have lots of support characters already so we need a tank
You will find that “tank” isnt really a role that exists in dnd
hey guys! im new to dnd and ive made a character but ive done nothing else. what do i do?
Did you read the free Basic Rules?
i read the first chapter so far and a little of chapter 2
Ok i read through the common races for dnd so far
Ask the folks in the AL channels
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Hello! I’m new to dnd and this server, so I would like to know about the minimum age here. I don’t want to be anoying to anyone so if I’m younger than the normal I’ll leave
Discord’s terms of service age is 13 and up.
Thanks, but are there any special age rules here?
You can check the server rules yourself (and are highly recommended you do so): #rules message
I have grown interested in D&D though would you recommend using a pre-made character or can I just yolo random stuff about my character

I’d recommend learning how to create a character yourself - the first chapter of the free basic rules is a step by step guide on building a character.
Thank you!
Yeah I am indeed trying to read through everything and creating the character.
The process of creating a character can help you learn the various rules and mechanics of the character sheet which can help you better learn the rules of the game.

what "/looking" command do i use when it's only me trying to find people to play with?
I've already made a character
Read the instructions and information in #find-a-game
Thanks!
It explains how the bot commands work.

Did you have any specific questions, though?
Fire away
In simplest terms, the game rules and your character sheet describe the abilities your character has.
How you make use of those abilities is up to you.
And a lot of the freedom of the game compared to a movie or a video game is that there’s no limits to how the story plays out.
Anyone in the group or the random roll of the dice can spin that story in an unexpected direction.
Speaking specifically about weapons, you have the freedom to say something like “My character uses a longsword”.
But the rules describe how a longsword works.
Basically you have full freedom of what your character would do, but your capabilities and success are dependent on your abilities / stats most of the time
So when you try to use your longsword, everyone in the group can agree on how that longsword works.
And the roll of the dice
The game has rules and those rules make things fair, predictable, and consistent. They also do a lot of the heavy lifting for the players and DM
There are pre-existing settings, each of which has their own suite of lore (fictional history) that DMs can use if they don't want to make their own setting. Again, does a lot of heavy lifting
Yes you can add new weapons
It's down to you to make the rules
Are those rules balanced/fair/appropriate? That's why we have #homebrew so people can bounce ideas off each other
You can, though when you add your own stuff, that would be called homebrew (and there's a channel to help with that too #homebrew)
Nothing stops a group from adding their own weapons to the game or otherwise adapting the existing rules to their own comfort.
But the DM has the final say on what is or isn’t allowed.
The point of the rules is to make it so the DM can create challenges where the outcome is about rewarding player skill and creativity, rather than just pleasing the DM
Without the rules, it’s just a game of “Nuh uh, I use my force field that blocks your rocket launcher.”
The rules aren't numbered, so no idea how many there are
You don't need to memorise them, just develop the skill of looking them up as you need them
And a lot of the rules you do need to know will be specific to your character.
Yes, people generally take their game books to games
I’d suggest giving this a try. It will give you a good rundown of the fundamentals:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
It's not like a board game where there's "The Rules" and that's it, there's the core rules, most of which you need to start playing, and then there are optional books that add new rules you can choose to add to your game
The Basic Rules is a collection of all the fundamental rules that start you off playing D&D. It's also free
But the rules are indeed what makes it a game.
You can certainly tell a story without rules.
But the rules for D&D and the roll of the dice help shape that story alongside your decisions.
If you’re following the rules for D&D, you’re playing D&D.
Regardless of the story you’re telling with those rules.
While you can use D&D to run any genre of game, D&D does certain genres better than others
But D&D is ultimately designed to tell a story of heroic fantasy.
D&D is not the only tabletop roleplaying game, and there are some that do certain genres better than D&D does
The farther you get from that, the harder you’ll have to work to adapt the rules.
D&D is what's often called a "sword and sorcerery" type game; it's designed around the assumptions of weapons that are pre-firearms (or at least firearms becoming common place) and magic/magical beings
Everything you need is in those links I shared at the start.
No, all you need is the free basic rules and some dice (digital or physical)
the mechanics of DnD work fine in a scifi setting or other settings to some extend, as long as you arent changing much about the core structure of play.
for example, heroic fantasy has certain tropes and the mechanics of DnD are build around that (like a group of powerful heroes explores the world and fights dangerous monsters).
it doesnt matter if a wizard a fighter and a cleric go into a dungeon and fight a red dragon or if a psionic, a space marine and an alien with healing powers go into a derelict space ship and fight an evil robot. its the same kind of game that dnd was designed around.
where you would struggle if you want to play out a modern grounded spy thriller without any magic or other strange beings in dnd. the game mechanics arent made for that.
there are many places to find games online. websites like roll20 or /lfg on reddit. a lot of discord server communities exist too. you can find DMs/players directly here or you can find such a community. All under #find-a-game
The question becomes "Why would you want to do that?"
There exist systems that do that natively, without the same friction that D&D would give
you could but there are games made for this kind of thing. like 99% of your character sheet wouldnt be useful to you
Then you'd probably find little discussion to be had on this server and would need to go somewhere more dedicated to brute forcing D&D into genres it's not designed for
That's a bit beyond the scope of this channel, and arguably this server
This server is focused on D&D, and using D&D to play broadly what D&D is designed to play
I'd argue you arent really playing DnD anymore at that point, even if you roll a d20 from time to time
People play all sorts of different styles of games, ranging from stoneage heroes fighting dinosaurs to students at a magical university to pulp noir dramas in a towering city recovering from a devestating war
However this is the newcomers channel; dedicated to helping people understand the basics of D&D they need to know to start playing D&D as it's designed in order to help them form a jumping off point for the rest of the hobby
5e is short for 5th edition
It refers to the fact D&D is in it's fifth rules version
Well, the rules version that has been numbered as the 5th, there's actually more but it gets complicated
At least 5
D&D 5th edition is the current one
I say "at least" because the exact number depends on how you count an edition
You can find out more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Editions_of_Dungeons_%26_Dragons
But honestly start with 5e. it's ht emost support and easier to learn.
You can discuss the other editions more in #dnd-elder-editions
are you familiar with Elder Scrolls games- like Skyrim, Oblivion?
Not the most 'fleshed out', but certainly what the majority of people play
That'd be a #dnd-rules question
Cool cool
Okay, let's use Zelda as a reference instead.
5e is like the most recent game. So easiest to get hold of, most supported online so on.
The older editions are like the older zelda games- very similar mechanics and stories, but things do change. They can be worth playing, but can also be harder to get into.
You can start off as a DM if you like and it appeals to you!

Hi, quick question, im super new to DnD (like i never even tried it), how does one even begin, what is required. Im moving to my new house and me and my girlfriend want to make one of the free rooms as a gaming room for dnd, gloomhaven and such. I would like to first gain some experience with the online DnD before hosting normal session. Any tips and tricks are welcome thx.
In new played maybe a hand full of times, looking for a game to get exp.

Same for me (:
That's not how D&D works
Assuming you're casting a spell that has an attack roll, you roll a d20 to determine if the attack hits or misses
If it hits, you then roll damage to determine how much you harm, the monster
I don't know, it could be or you could have just simply misunderstood things
Minor correction- 3 to 10 is a bit broad. The game is designed for 4 players + 1 DM. Sometimes you get more players but it's not recommended to go beyond 6.
Nat 20 on an attack means it auto hits and might deal double damage dice.
A Nat 1 on an attack means you auto miss.
(Nat 1 and Nat 20 only apply to attack rolls and Death Saves. They do not apply to anything else.)
Natural 20 on an attack roll simply means it always hits regardless of the enemy Armor Class, not that it automatically kills them outright
So you hit because of the automatic hit of the attack roll, but you sitll roll the damage to see how much damage you deal

The Basic Rules is a collection of all the fundamental rules that start you off playing D&D. It's also free
D&D is mainly bound by its medieval setting. You can try to push it to its limits, but the rules and mechanics of D&D are mainly tailored towards playing a medieval dungeon fantasy. Trying to translate that to other settings would require alot of work and more often than not the rules tend to not translate very well. D&D is at its best when used for dungeon crawler fantasies, so it's best to stick to it.
So, say I've never played DnD before but I want to read up on everything I want to know and do some homebrew for my first campaign. Where should I read up on all that?
You don't need to read much more than the basic rules
I just joined this server in hopes I can find a nice community, I’m fairly new to dnd, but I’ve played games and roleplays that are similar. I also have a few character concepts I’m totally up for updating and sharing in this server.
I forgot that my display name was so wild 😭
hi everyone!
How do I play dnd on a computer
I'm in the same boat but the discord seems pretty nice
?tag new online
Yeah, I joined in hopes to learn more about dnd, and maybe even find an online campaign to join because I live too far from anyone to play it irl
yeah I live in outback Australia so finding a groups pretty hard but i have played a few games of dnd online with my mates
I might have to find a completely-online group because I don’t have much irl friends who enjoy dnd
I also live on a big farm in the United States, surrounded by more big farms, so it’s rare to find much dnd players
hello
yeah nothing but farms near me as well
im looking fo an online group as well

Good evening Everyone. Are there any games open to total beginners? I watch a lot and try to read as much as I can, but theory and practice, those are two different things.
I am this idiot in a room who need to be explained twice 😄
Same thing here. Just discovered my interest for D&D and wanted to try it out but I haven’t read much about it
If you're looking for beginner friendly games, I'd recommend looking into Adventurers League as tier 1 games, games geared towards characters level 1 to 4, are beginner friendly.

AFAIK you could absolutely do that.
You would have a much simpler game as huge numbers of rules would just not apply.
The PCs could all be Commoners with a Sage background.
Virtually all combat and magic rules are unused.
You could cook up some mini games for study activities (I think Strixhaven has some college related mini systems?).
Add Japanese as a language or simply say that Common = Japanese.
All PCs are human... did I miss anything?
Remove all magic user feats of course.
IDK, I would play it 😁😁😁
As a DM I would have an incredible time with the modern Japanese students campaign.
I would explore some scenes blurring the lines with slice of life versus over the top Anime action and leave the players wondering what is "real"...
I would look for another ttrpg at that point
DnD is at it's core a heroic fantasy rpg
the rules are built around the fact that you will be fighting things and adventuring
yeah dnd is not the only ttrpg. You don't need to drastically rework every time you need a chance in setting, tone, plot, or mechanics.
If you want to play that sort of game, there are tons of systems that are super easy to learn for that. I think kids on bikes is pretty much perfect for what you are describing and its one of the simplest systems to learn. Dnd is a heroic fantasy rpg about dungeon crawling where spells can do pretty much anything. It does not lend itself well to certain genres like survival, horror, slice of life, etc.
Players are specifically very empowered and the game focuses very little on stuff outside of fighting.
Ime D&D can be flexible if you understand how to modify it. The chief exception to this, is removing magic. Too many classes, feats, creatures and races rely on it; as well as every magic item
Of course you can do that.
But there's a lot of systems that can do that better.
Thats like use vehicle with square wheels. You can use it. But should you?
Hello everybody, I'm new to dnd and haven't had much luck being able to play due to not many people in my area being interested, work and kids (not even my kids are interested except for the 2yr old but he only like throwing dice everywhere 🤣), I have heard of adventurers league, play by post and vttrpg, my best time to play would be Sat nights after the kids go to sleep, so for people in similar situations, which would be the more succeful approach for a beginner like me?

For parents with busy schedules, Adventurers League will suit you better because each game is a self contained adventure that can be played in a single sitting and allows you to commit to a single adventure at time, which is great for people with changing schedules.

I would like to play as a paladin/warlock multi class but I'm having some trouble figuring out how exactly I should build 1
ok, what are your goals with the character?
Ig kinda like a Eldritch knight but paladin has the melee stuff I want and warlock is better for spell casting
what type of spells (e.g Offence, support, etc)
Also warlock and paladin both use charisma for their spell casting so that's nice
so you need a high charisma for your character, but how do you want to achieve that (point buy, or dice rolling)
and uhh, what level do you want your character to be, cause that will limit a few things
Honestly not really sure because I haven't really played with all the spells warlock has but probably buffs/healing/with 1 or 2 decent DMG spells on paladin and more DMG/support spells on warlock
ok
So ig depending on the situation I can sit back and lob spells and if have to get up close that's still an option
ok, what lvl?
I'm not sure what lvl the campaign will go up to but for now I'll just assume 15
which class do you want as your main
for your main, level 8, and level 7 for the other one
that will get you level 15
I think having an idea of how I want the characters spells/stats to look and then working towards that and changing things as needed would probably be good
from there you can access a lot of spells that you can look through, including a lot of good DMG/support spells
Is there any difference between choosing what class is my main besides just 1 having 1 lvl more?
I heavily suggest not building a character that far before actually being in a campaign
true, unless thats starting level
usually you would want to begin from the starting level of campaign
which I certainly hope it's not, especially for someone new to the game
that'd be overwhelming
well, yes. some level-specific features exist for certain classes
not sure abt level 7 or level 8
but as azerick said, unless thats the starting level (which will defo be confusing), make one from the starting level
I've played some before but I'm new to playing paladin and warlock but I've heard that it's a fun multi class to play
As for starting lvl I'm not sure but I'd assume somewhere between 2-4 probably
I wouldn't multi out of paladin until having extra attack
and I wouldn't multi out of warlock until having a pact boon
Fair
which respectively is level 5 and level 3 for each of those classes
i havent looked into paladin/warlock, so im gonna leave it to azerick to recommend what class to start with
pact of blade wouldn't necessarily get you all that much extra as a martial who has extra attack except the lifedrinker invocation, but you'd need 12 levels of warlock to get that. if you have 5 levels of paladin before going warlock, that's a level 17 thing. never make a character based on that far end development, because that's not where most of your play will be
at least, that's my suggestion
anywho, a lot of this is stuff moreso meant for #character-discussion
Ok I'll look at what the pacts/oaths will gives me and if I need input on something/have a question I'll @ you in #character-discussion
a 1 level dip of hexblade warlock is a good option on a paladin
lets you attack with charisma, so you don't need much str or dex
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options make sure you read this though as you only get certain things from your new class and there are stat requirements
Ok ty
Why is Rise Of Tiamat so hard to find and why expensive to buy?
Is it out of print?
I can find every other 5E book new at a store except this one
It’s lumped in with tyranny of dragons iirc
Yep, Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat are no longer in print as individual books and have been combined into a single adventure; Tyranny of Dragons

İ need a starter pack or something?
Buy d and d essentials
you don't need to buy anything to start with
you can just use the free basic rules, which are linked in the pinned messages of this channel
Ya but most players are not gonna understand the rules without the game pieces and knowledge behind the game
D and d yes is up in the air but its also hard to understand in todays society
huh?
@ripe herald add me up I sent you a request
the rules provide the knowledge of how it works
