that too
If you make the game not fun for others, yes you may end up no longer being a part of the game.
hello '
heyo
how are you

Trying to make artificer, campaign doesn’t start for a good amount of time with my friends but I wanna have the goofiest (slightly broken) character I can
Through the artificer / literal magical iron man called armorer 🤣
It's perfectly fine to say "This is what my character would do"
The key part is to make your character be a functional addition that lets the story progress and not, for example, attempt to kill or take the spotlight from other party members, steal from them, or "derail the campaign" in general
So it's a matter of context, the same as 'metagaming' - metagaming can be fine in the sense of "we want to have a fun game and a cohesive progressing story", not the "I read the monster's statblock and we need to do X"
i dont like 'its what my character would do' because your character would likely have also better things to do
like why piss off the adventuring party ur with
when you can be chaotic elsewhere
'Why is your character adventuring with this party' is a very important question
I just wanna be a calm characters who can be slightly unhinged when necessary 🤣 no acting involved
is there anyone who can help me make a character that is based off an mc in a manwha

Hi! I am new to DnD and we are about to go on an adventure with full new players and DM.
My wife is palying and we have a 1 year old son, she has to go from time to time and help him go back to sleep maybe a couple minutes.
I was wondering if there was a cool way to make this fit her character. Maybe give her lore where she falls asleep randomly or gets transported to another realm randomly.
Any thoughts on how we can make this work?
I leaning into getting transported to the astral plane from time to time, need to polish the lore tho
That's up to your DM.
Players can be AFK can you don't need to make up a grandoise reason for the PC to be physically away. At my table if a player isn't there we just say they're tagging along and T-posing (we're all game devs so that's an inside joke).
Just be understanding and offer to put your son to bed, that's all she wants and all you can do. Or, have him with you. Worked fine for me until the poo-nami, but that's water under a bridge now. 😏
The story only progresses as you play if you have to go sort the kids out for 5 mins it should be fine just make sure the rest of the table are ok with this though
Hi
Cool
If im trying to hit something (a mosquito) with a 27 armor class, what do I roll?
Presumably if you're trying to beat an armor class, that'd be an attack roll
Which would be a d20 + whatever the ability is you're using to attack (usually Strength or Dexterity depending on the weapon)
Hello.
My group looking to start Ravenloft. I am looking to do something fun but I have never multi-classed before. I was thinking Harenogen 4Thief and rest Twilight Cleric
What is the tiniest species I could become?
Small
Hello
Would you say it could fit inside a homunculus servant?
I hate to ask but why?
That’s not in the game rules
The servant can fly 30ft
If I am in it…
I wouldn’t be flying
I would just be inside it.
Ah artificer thing yeah it’s tiny
Which is why I was asking if a halfling could fit in it
That sounds very painful for the undead in question
Oh

This is newcomers so we stick to the basics not homebrew
Small races can’t fit inside tiny ones
I do not wish to be small
Are grimoires something a magic user would use? Typically?
A spellbook is a key component of the wizard class, yes
K thx
Another question: how much room do you think I’d have? Enough to maybe move my hands?
I dearly hope that was an unfortunate mistype, because Enoki is incorrect in that statement
DnD has several size types, and Tiny is listed as smaller than Small
So no, a Small creature would not be able to fit inside a Tiny one
Yes mistype I’ll correct it lol
Also, homunculus servants aren't hollow
There aren't any 'mech -adjacent' classes in DnD, but you could look at the Artificer's Armorer subclass! It comes... kinda close?
Do you mean using a book as an arcane focus??
Yeah like using a book instead of a wand or staff
A fun way to role play a mech would be to play an artificer armorer and ask your DM if you could be allowed to play a small race, but be medium when wearing your armor
So what would it look like if you used a hollow gem that was bigger than a small race to make the homunculus servant?
It would still be tiny
So would the gem shrink and compress?
The stat block of the servant says it is tiny, so that is what size it must be
Yes that is something you could do with certain classes
that would be up to your DM I guess
Any specific ones?
Well, are there any shrinking spells in DND?
Enlarge reduce
yes. Enlarge/Reduce can make a creature 1 size category smaller or larger
Wizard - scribes,
Is that it?
But speak with your DM if you wanted to use a book for any other spell casting class as it’s not that Hard to reflavour your focus into a book
There are many spellbook magic items that can be used as spellcasting focuses as well
Thats what i was mainly focused on, because my character is a sorcerer and I read they commonly use Quarterstaffs, but i personally think a Spellbook is cooler and probably easier for him to carry
A quarterstaff is not a spellcasting focus, just btw
It is for Druid and wizard
quarterstaff =/= staff
I feel dumb now…. Welp it is what it is
This isn't #dnd-rules so let's keep things simple
But as long as you have a free hand to touch your focus you can cast spells with the M component ( unless they have a cost)
A staff can be used as a quarterstaff, which means at the basic level, a quarterstaff can be a spellcasting focus
Let's leave it at that
I don't actually think that is correct. The rule that staffs can be uses as a quarterstaff is from the description the the Staff magic item type. I don't believe it applies to staves that are not magic items
This is not #dnd-rules
If you wish to get into a rules discussion on that topic, you can do so there
So uh, I’m trying to figure out a way to get mechs to work in RAW. If someone uses reduce on a halfling, could it fit in a homunculus servant?
a tiny creature cannot fit inside of a tiny creature. Creatures are not hollow
If I were to make the servant hollow? (It says I could choose the appearance) or use a hollow tiny gem for its heart?
Wait, I could use four homunculus servants to make a joint creature
Then pilot that.
The only thing that might work for you, RAW are certain magic items that are very close to mechs, which would only be given to you at your DM's discretion the the campaign. Trying to use the Homunculus Servant would be at best extremely clunky and very temporary. I'd suggest following Colossus' advice a few posts above and asking your DM if you could flavor your Armorer Artificer magic armor as a mech suit that increases your size to Medium.
- you cannot make the same infusion more than once
- creatures cannot combine together into a larger one
Aw. Well, is there a spell to see from the perspective of the servant?
I’m trying to make this work in RAW
From the servant, no. There are spells to do similar things, like Find Familiar. But not for this construct specifically
yeah I agree
hi, who wants to play with me and my friend? We are mostly new to DND, but we kind of know how game works

hey, i'm brand new to Dungeons and Dragons and really want to learn how to play. I've already got a character sheet but i don't know what to do now and nobody in my family wants to play D&D with me.
Well, hop into a running campaign, I’ll keep an eye out(or finally find enough players to run my own) and let ya know
Guys I am new here what should I do
@lost fog okay, thank you so much.
Any good sources for general information reguarding DND? Like rules, spells, races, etc
D&D Beyond has a lot of info freely available as part of the Basic Rules.
These guys are what I use
Are you trying to learn the game? Find a game? Or do you already know the game and just want to discuss?
Awesome thank you
I am new here, and have no idea where to start

The best way to learn is by doing, find a noob friendly campaign in #looking-for-players
Pull up a sheet and start rolling
D&D Beyond is probably a good start.
Ho ok, thanks for the advice

@jovial willow See the above post!
While I totally agree with this, I’d also recommend learning as much as you can while you search, too.
Not least because showing an understanding of the basics can increase your chances of getting accepted for a game.
holy shit this is complicated. Ive listened to a DND podcast for a little while and have played BG3, but the character creation and all of the rules seem so overwhelming to me
Its mostly the whole beginning part, i have trouble learning virtually and learn much better physically. I feel i may just need to find a group IRL
Start with a non magic rouge. I found that helped me a lot and I didn’t really have to worry about all the magic rules. It also helped with the action economy and learning how that worked. They are also good at a lot of things so your out of combat actions are more likely to succeed!
Yeah, anything that cast spells is inherently more complex.
I love magic systems and trying to learn and absorb all i can from every power system. I feel like a paladin may be a good in between?
Because then you need to learn how spellcasting works and which spells are available.
Paladin could be a good middle-ground, sure.
Yea or an arcane trickster rouge. You will have spells but a limited number.
They don’t get spells until second level, so you can defer learning that for a little bit.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Finding a group, especially one who will help someone who hasn't read the rules yet, may be difficult. This is why we recommend you get familiarize yourself with the rules before looking for a group.
Paladins can cast but you typically hold your spells to do extra damage with smite
And they gain spells at a slower rate than, say, a wizard.
All i know about wizard is funny fireball
And upcasting fireball to get more fireball
Arcane trickster use wizard spells but can’t use all of them, assuming you would be starting at level 1 or 3?
Do you want to be a healer/buff/debuff person?
Most likely 1, im still almost entirely confused, I get the general gist of what you can and cant do, but specific rules i need to go through and learn. Any books yall reccomend (that preferably will not destroy my pockets)
The basic rules are free! Just give them a look through first
i can find those on DNDB correct?
yep
Players handbook but no one knows all the rules! There is a lot of questions by everyone all the time!
I suggest picking a class and reading up on it more so than the rules of the game.
Do you watch critical role? Or any dnd show?
I listen to Dumb Dumbs and Dragons
That’s how I kinda figured stuff out
I really need to find an IRL group 😅
Also most people love explaining the game to new players.
I attempted to play a game with my friends but it surely spiraled out and nobody understood anything
So I wouldn’t be worried about just jumping in. A lot of dms will do a session zero with you and help you build your character
any idea where to look to find a IRL group, Im located in Ohio and FB has almost nothing for my area
Yea you have to have someone who kinda gets the gist if everyone’s new its still fun but I think it gets of the rails pretty quick
Google comic book stores in your area? Lots of times they will do games, some even have like newcomers night
I have ICG in the area, but i have to go a state over lol
Google dnd games near, your city and see what comes up?
there is a store locator on Wizards of the Coast's website that you can use to find official events like Adventure League. Otherwise, school clubs, libraries, your friends and family, etc
nothing in my area for dnd unless its 50 miles away 😢 i checked that first before joining the discord
Well, that's just the official stuff. You can still try to find community or home games, or start one yourself
well, sadly, dont have many friends and work a night shift so my options are quite limited when it comes to that
Craigslist
Facebook
Warhorn
Meetup
tyty
Also, could i possibly get a list of popular acronyms and what they mean in the community? (or a source to browse them)
Most acronyms are simple, like DM being Dungeon Master, PC: Player Character, BBEG: Big Bad Evil Guy, and a few more but the 3 listed are the more important ones
I'm not familiar with an resource that has all of those being collected in one place, unfortunately
I dont know all of them but most of the time if one gets said you could ask if you dont know the meaning of one, or search it online
Hello, I just joined the server, I just wanted to ask if there's anything specifically required to play DND other than roleplaying capabilities, since I have little to no game knowledge at hand as to how to play or find a group to join
Theres also AC: Armor Class, CR: Challenge rating, and DC: Difficulty Class
All you need is the basic rules, a way to roll dice, and some friends!
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
And 2 of those are covered by an app depending on how you play!
Oh I see, I've already made a DND Beyond character for a Human and Dwarf, I guess I'll start reading the Basics Rules and try and join a group, Thanks!
Yep! You can also look up rulings on dnd beyond
hey does anyone have any tips to find a dnd campaign i have tried so many places but they all either dont start at a good time or something else and i idk what to do
ive never played on d&d beyond and except for bg3 ive never played d&d but ive always wanted to try it.... Is there any links i can use to join a game on d&d beyond?

Dnd Beyond is not a game server. It is a tool that does two main things: digital library for books and a character builder/tracker
To clarify, D&D Beyond is not a website that hosts D&D games. Its a digital toolset that can be used to make D&D games easier and run smoother. Its basically just your rulebooks and character sheet, but online
i do look but its like oh session running and itd at like midnight or 1am
Keep looking until you find a game that suits your parameters.
i mean yh but i have been looking for about 2 weeks now
idk if its becase im in uk
Remember that you may not find a DM in your time zone.
To be blunt, It could take you months.
It does take quite a while at times
but i have never played before, bought the handbook and some dice and i cant even find a session haha
A curse many share
Finding a good table to play at with players you can get along with is like any other social relationship. Just like dating it could take months to find "the one."
true#
Well, you have to make concessions if you're desperate to play. Scheduling is a big issue with a lot of groups.
yh idc who or what kind of session it is to much just that it isnt like 1am
Lots of groups start but never complete the campaign
Are you just looking here ?
here , dnd uk , tableside gaming
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view good guide to finding games online (credit iamrazorwing)
If your in England IRL games can be found at geek retreats and other LGS
i looked in my local "nerd shop" but they tried starting one and it never happened
I already posted that earlier above.
Keep trying there then
All we can really say is keep at it. It's on you to be proactive in your search.
There are millions of D&D players around the world but regrettably there aren't that many DMs compared to the number of players.
If you're really excited to play you could host as DM yourself!
i thought about thst but i am not very creative and i wanna play as the layer?
Consider it as a backup idea if you still can't find anything in the near future
Being the DM is very fun, too 😊
idk if i could do all the map making player making quest building and running everything tho
There are pre-made adventures that do a lot of that for you already.
hi, me and my friend are new to DnD. And we are looking for someone to explain it to us. Can anyone please help us.

Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
ok thank you, me and my friend will devinitly read it.
on roll 20?
There, too, yeah.
Just in general. Here are some examples: https://www.dndbeyond.com/tag/free-adventure
would they be one shots i could do today?
Looks like they are. Other good single-session beginner-friendly adventures to check out: The Delian Tomb, Peril in Pinebrook, The Silvyr Tower, The Green Blight, or any of Winghorn Press's stuff.
Roll20 specifically has all the official adventures, like Curse of Strahd for example:
https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/bundle/15575/curse-of-strahd
Yeah, I've been DMing for years and I've never written or homebrewed a single thing
Just doesn't interest me and it's not required
i mean i am uinfortunaly quite socially akward so having to run a session with randoms may be hard? haha
Using premade adventures doesn't require running a session with strangers either
wdym?
You seemed to be replying to my comment about using premade stuff saying that you didn't want to run for strangers
The two things are not inherently connected
no no ik its just im just a bit worried abou t all the preasure of running a session espscialy as i have never played as a player let alone a dm
Though admittedly I found people to play d&d with and made them my friends, not the other way around
That's valid. But if you don't feel up to DMing yet, the only real solution is to keep looking
As people have said, there's significantly more people wanting to play then DM
yh ik
Does anyone have a relatively new campaign that a newcomer to dnd like myself could join
Head to #looking-for-players and reply to any posts that interest you. If they don't specify being newcomer-friendly, you can always ask!
Samee
New games pop up all the time, and there’s plenty of other places to search, too.
Such as..
Ok
idk what social medias you like but if you find some public places you can usually find someting cause dnd is decently big
I made a guide full of options: #third-party message
Ah OK thank you
Sun?
Yees
I know you don’t know me or anything like that but would you be interested in a voice rp

hi, my friend has come and joined the server because she wants to learn how to play D&D
The bot post above has some handy resources to start with.
How handy. Look up.
💀
Hello I’m Rocky I’m new to dnd because friends showed me how to play, but I still barely know how to play but to an extent I made a character and I need help playing games online I would like to play
I spoke it
welcome
Thx
If you scroll up a few messages, the bot post there has all the resources you will need to get started
Thx
I still don’t know how to join or play a game with people I need some help please
please read the info and instructions (including the threads) in #find-a-game
I tried i don’t understand
it explains the bot commands to use to creat a post in the LFG channels
Start with typing / and looking-for - the bot will give you prompt to select what kind of post you want to make. If looking for a DM use dm.
The bot will then give you a form to fill out - once submitted it will create a post and an attached thread in the proper channel.
Use the thread to clarify anything or make corrections and discuss game opportunities with folks.
Just did, question are you a dm?
I am a moderator here (and yes I DM and I play in other folks' D&D games)
Can I play a game with you?
No - I don't have time to run games for random internet folks.
Also please don't solicit for games outside of the Looking For Game channels - it is off-topic and we'll have to moderate it.
You may want to check the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for D&D games as well
Sorry I don’t know anything about this
Well it didn't get too far where we have to do moderation so call it live and learn! 😉
Thx
Also good luck on finding a group/game to join! I hope you find a good group and have lots of fun playing D&D!
Thank you
hi so I was wondering is there a chat or somewhere in this server where I can learn how to make a character? also how would it work if me and another person wanted to join a campaign? Would we make ours before hand or do we have to be in the campaign first to make one

oh cewl thanks
As for when to make your character, I find the best characters are ones made specific to whatever campaign you're playing.
But what I'd recommend is to come up with a few loose ideas for different characters you'd like to play.
Then when you find a group, you can work with the DM to find the best match and add any finishing details.
I see, thank you
I know there's a lot of customization when making a character, is there some resource that has all this info?
should I just google like a wiki fandom?
wikifandom has a lot of incorrect or out of date info in a lot of places. The Basic Rules, which are free, have everything you need to get started.
Anything else, subclasses, feats, etc that you want later can be found in the books which you can purchase IRL or online. DDB sells things a la carte so you can buy just a race or subclass and save some scratch
thank you so much <3
Hey so im pretty new to dnd i kinda know the basis and ive made characters but i havent been able to find a campaign is there anyone looking to take on a newbie and teach me
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
For the most part
Does anyone have a dungeon I can join? I am new and I want to learn from the hear of the moment if possible
i have a weird question (tho you can help ChaosOfWind first) but there a way to filter find a game as a player who hosts games on Sundays? or do i just have to look and scroll in looking-for-players to find one

Finding a campaign can take a lot of time and patience. There are many more players than there are DMs so the best advice we can offer is to keep looking. There are some channels on this discord for games if you want to look. You can make a post for yourself in #750812887697588356. DMs will also post their games in #looking-for-players. Alternatively, you can look for a discord server in #looking-for-community that may offer games. You can also check out 3rd party sites like Roll20 or Foundry for posted games.
Basically, be patience, persistent and, understanding while searching. Also remember that no D&D is better than bad D&D and only stick in a game if you are happy, safe and, enjoying it.
do i just type /looking-for players, make a post and it'll pop up on the looking for dm channel?
Almost
/looking-for players will post in #looking-for-players.
To post in #750812887697588356, you'd want /looking-for dm.
That's it yea 😄
ohhhh okay! thank yee
I'm NEW , hello

D&D is a game of rules so you can't really avoid not reading the rules.
how does the /looking for dm thing work, i copy/pasted mine but the submission game out blank
oh wait nvm! found it
There's not really ways to visualize most things due to how broad they can possibly be. There are class tables, but there's still necessary reading. Visual depictions aren't entirely available for what is innately rules in text
So I did the / looking-for dm and clicked it but It didn't give me this form to fill out to post
Make sure your Discord client is up to date. You may need to try reinstalling the Discord app. Sometimes Discord doesn’t update correctly and only a reinstall can clean it up.

The basic rules cover quite a bit, though do take your time to read through it.
If you're more of a visual learner, ther hanbooker helper series is quite extensive.
I've tried reading guides and such before joining but I can't ever learn anything from a pre-written article ww- I'll go check them out though.
Ok so I checked my online character sheet, and it's said 5d12, does that I mean roll it 5 times, I'm just skeptical because that seems strong
Oh my god
Did you have any specific questions we could help with?
Thx!
Do note, if you are not a part of a campaign yet.
Using standard array or point buy will serve you better.
No, it's just confusing as a whole
What’s one thing you’re confused with, to start?
Making a character ig?
First step to making a character is to choose a race, class, and background.
I like making my character on D&D Beyond.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
Did you have anything specific in mind?
I'll check that link before replying
If you’re using the standard character creation option, there’s a checkbox at the start that says “Show beginner text”.
If you click that, it will walk you through each step.
But really, it just follows the first few chapters of the Basic Rules in order.
Do you have a DM already?
I do not
Does any of the stuff on the first page matter?
Hence my last question. 😅
Ah
If you don’t have a DM yet, I’d just leave those all at the defaults.
And on a similar note, when you get to Ability Scores, I’d recommend using Standard Array or Point Buy.
If your future DM does want you to roll, they’ll likely want to see those rolls for themself.
But anything you select during character creation can be changed later, so feel free to play around with things.
What do the languages correspond to? It just says the names...
different races/cities/areas might speak a different language. Knowing that language just allows you to understand them and converse back. You don't actually really see anything show up written in other languages or have to speak in a different language, but in game, your character can fluently.
Right, but I was asking what races/areas each langauge is
It really depends on your DM and their setting, but here's a loose explanation: https://www.dicebreaker.com/games/dungeons-and-dragons-5e/how-to/dnd-5e-languages
Does everything just depend on the dm?
More or less.
So I should find one before learning/choosing the things..?
The rules provide a pretty key baseline, but even then the DM may ignore, change, or devoate from the rules.
Knowing how to make a character is valuable, even if you don't yet have a DM.
the game has rules and guidelines which most people follow.. but the DM can ultimately decide how much, if at all, wiggle room there are with the rules. Using the Basic rules to build a character, you shouldn't have a problem finding a DM. Just start at level 1 and should be fine
Making a character independent of a game means that, for example, it doesn't matter what languages you choose, only that you know that you get X number of languages when you build said character (and that those languages have an impact on what sorts of creatures your character could speak to).
yeah, 5d12 means 5 rolls of a d12. What's it for?
strength is highly dependent on the feature.
if it's once a day, that's suddenly not nearly as strong
same for if it's a level 20 feature
I just got confused because it said on my dnd beyond account when I edit it
pretty much. When you find a DM and find they have a specific campaign setting where say, Elvish was more common, you could always ask to change it before the game starts.
I can show a picture if needed
also, keep in mind that 5d12 averages to 32.5, which probably sounds a lot less than 5d12
isn't 5d12 in reference to your total Hit Dice?
yeah it probably is actually
in which case thats very different to say, damage
yeah, so, when you are injured, you have a total of 5 d12s you can roll to try and regain health. the number rolled, plus your constitution modifier would be how many hit points you can regain on a short rest
5d12 hit die means you have 5 d12s to spend on healing during short rests
Oh yeah
you regain all your hit die on a long rest, and can spend them during a short rest to heal a bit
I have a 20 in Constitution so it makes sense
con doesnt affect hit die
I am guessing you have a Str modifier of +2 and a Proficiency bonus of 3 - so that is a total of +5 when you hit with a weapon that uses your stre
you probably want at least +4 strength by this level fyi
as someone attacking with it
but on this topic, your hit die are determined by your levels
Lemme check one sec
each class has a specific die size, d12 is for barbarian
so if you're a 5th level barbarian you have 5d12 hit die
con comes into play when you spend the hit die
the healing per die is equal to the die roll+ your con mod
CON affects your hit die when you are rolling to heal during a short rest.
I have a 20 in both
your attack bonus is wrong then
20 in STR and CON? that doesn't seem right
+5 is your strength mod
your attack bonus with strength (if youre proficient with the weapon) is strength mod + proficiency bonus
If it helps I picked Goliath
Is this a character that you have made for a campaign? or one you are making for fun? If so, how did you get 20 in CON and STR?
at this point I think you should read the basic rules rather than randomly guessing what numbers mean
did you roll for stats?
What do SP and GP mean?
silver and gold points/pieces
the currency
10 sp to 1 gp
The DM is my brother, I can find a link that I can share to you of my character
10 cp (copper pieces/points) to 1 sp
if your brother is the DM and those are the numbers he gave you, then you will be in great shape to destroy stuff in combat. But your attack bonus doesn't seem right
For physical characteristics can I just put anything?
yeah that's just a description of your character
Can I send you the link in DMS, I'm still confused about my character sheet
sure
Ok one sec
I don't accept DMs, but I would view it if you post the link here
That would also be preferable to me
Idk how to post it in here
is it a pdf sheet or what?
yup
ah, i see your confusion
your damage bonus is +5, as it should be
your attack bonus, under the "Hit" column, is +8, as it should be
Oh
it all looks good
Ok, thx!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/118019573 does this work?
the link or the character?
The character
well the link doesnt to start with, you need to set the sheet to public
click on the manage button next to the character's name
Should be public now
yep
okay, a few things
1, you need to select spells, and you haven't selected any skill proficiencies
two, the ability scores probably need a bit of work
you dont need that much intelligence, and you want at least 16 charisma to start with, as it's your spellcasting stat
I didn't see the menus for those, I'll add them now
you also never want negative con, as it affects hp. you probably want to start with 14
you also need to select equipment
What's cantrip mean?
a cantrip is a spell that is free to cast
you can cast it as much as you want
think of it as a level 0 spell
ac?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/118019573 I think I added all of those things
You should know 4 spells. I would also think about making sure you have spells that can be useful in combat
I thought I added four-
Ohh
Solid
looks good
Soo what should I do after making the character?
hi im new
Welcome!
Wassup
Sup gangy
Hey, i am really new to dnd and was wondering if some of you know where a great place to start with is
i have bought the player handbook so far
The basic rules, which are linked in the pinned messages of this channel
alternatively you can read through the PHB
which is just basic rules with extra options
PHB?
player's handbook sorry
Hi, i have a beginner question
after i raed the PHB, do you think this is enough to start a campaign with some? because i dont want to ruin a bit of the fun with being not so knowledgeable
I was browsing the sorcerer spell list and I wondered… is is a good idea to use blur + mirror image? Or it’s better to have spells like mage armor and shield?
Depends on what you’re after.
The first combo would make you very hard to hit, but it would take two turns to get there, and those protections only last a minute.
Since they’re second level spells, you have to use up your more powerful spell slots as well.
Mage Armor isn’t quite as strong, but one or two castings will last the entire day.
Shield has arguably the lowest cost. It’s a 1st-level spell, and since it’s a reaction, you don’t need to spend your turn to cast it. You can just wait until someone tries to attack you.
But it also lasts the shortest of the three: just until the start of your next turn.
So they’re all good defensive options, but each in their own way.
I see, thanks
Since i haven’t played a dnd game yet, how much is a minute compared to the length of an average battle? A blink of an eye? A couple turns? Half the fight ?
2 to 5 rounds
I see, thanks
So that's 12 to 30 seconds in game time.
I've had long battles that were approaching 30 rounds.
If you're "lucky", and in a dungeon with another fight in the very next room, those spells might get you through two battles.
Woah, that sounds draining for the party
But in practical terms, a minute is generally only enough for a single fight.
I will keep that in mind
(And Blur, at least, requires concentration, so it may not even last that long.)
Do the basic rules not include any feats?
Just Grappler
So like, as a human fighter, I guess that means I have to take all ability score improvements lol
(or any class I guess)
The Basic Rules is like a video game demo. It's a just a free sample of a the full game, which you would need to buy via buying the books.
It doesn't really seem that way
It's more like "here's everything you need to play while the books just give you more options"
Well, that's what it is -- the base rules.
i have really appreciated ginny di's tutorials on youtube
she has stuff for players and for DMs
How does one add subclasses to dnd beyond
You have to be a certain level to get a subclass (usually level 3).
it's the base game without any of the interesting DLC or updates, to compare it
I am confused on how to set up the bot in #find-a-game
type (in any channel) /looking-for-player or /looking-for-dm
It should bring up a sheet to fill in
There is no specific "use a chunk of coal" rules or mechanics in D&D. I suppose you could use it as an improvised weapon.
Or keep a nice fire going.
Check with your Dungeon Master.
How long would it last ?
Have your DM decide that 😉
👍
I have this sock that magically produces a chunk of coal every morning so I was wondering what to do with it 😅
Gift it to naughty children during the holiday season in your DM's world/campaign...
and now your character has a sidequest to sneak into folks homes and leave coal in their shoes
hey guys! i am a bit new to DnD only played momentary campaigns. i got my character set up in VR but it's a homebrew species...
Dnd in VR?
yeah! like there is a DM running campaigns in rec room!
i am not sure if he is in this server though.
I’ll have to ask my kids about that they are always on rec room. Have fun
crazy the new ways dnd is being played nowadays but awesome at the same time that its so accessible
thank you! i have a character sheet here and i was wondering where else i should put it to have a valid sheet to play right here.
i want to look for a group but i don't have anything else to say other than i am looking for a DM.
thats pretty much all you need to say
really? that's it?
yup go to #find-a-game and fill out the looking for dm form
sure! i'll go do that. i'll be back after i'll fill it. thank you!
are you sure there are DMs that accept homebrew?
you could also check out #looking-for-players and message dms who have posted their campaigns
after looking at #looking-for-players i am pleaseantly surprised that many accept homebrew!
yes there is a great amount of diversity in this server
though the timezones are a bit iffy here...
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view good guide to finding games online (credit iamrazorwing)
you can also include your timezone in your looking for dm post
You can share your character sheet in #character-discussion if you want someone to check it over
i remember getting that same list when i joined lol
i forgot about it
I had a personal discord with tons of useful links copied there
yeah i have been building up my stuff for a while now but not as much as id like i read it but forget to save it
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources this one is good for new players some handy simplifies terms and guides
yeah i have that one on my server as well dnd beyond honestly has so many great resources
alright! i've submitted a form and now i wait! hopefully someone would pick me up!
1 thing to keep in mind is to just be patient and not give up. sometimes you get in quick and sometimes it can take a while.
is it okay to resubmit the form to be in front of the channel?
Hiiii
hello!
Who is Iranian here?
sorry not me.
you can only submit them once per week in each of those channels
sounds good to me!
What you trying to make and are you using dndbeyond?
No
i would have used DNDbeyond if it supported homebrew slugcats. but there is none of that.
A half human and a half elf
What class?
The point is that I have neither a teammate nor the game
Thank you so much
well what should i do while i wait for someone to pick me up?
i don't know much about DND and didn't have any funny moments to share.
Read the rules, check other places for D&D games, chat D&D here on the server.
D&D is not like a video game where you just jump in to the game immediately - coordinating people's schedules and establishing what kind of D&D game you'll be playing takes time.
Could even check out other D&D servers and see if they have games - see #looking-for-community.
many thanks! i'll see what i can do. the first DM who messaged me told me a time where i couldn't attend. so i'm waiting for someone else...
i'll see what i can do.
Yeah it’s gonna happen just be proactive and watch the lists for a time that works best for you you can even set yourself discord to receive notifications from the looking for player channel so you can check all the new ones faster. It takes time took me 3 months to get in my first session that didn’t get cancelled right away after I joined here
i guess my patience has to be trained again.
What’s a slugcat race?
it's this homebrew article right here https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Slugcat_(5e_Race)
it's very unpopular due to the game it came from is not popular as well, so that must be the reason it isn't in the dndbeyond
Dndbeyond is only offical races and some 3rd party stuff
You can homebrew the race into dndbeyond
is it possible that my species can be accepted anyway?
do you have a DM?
not yet. still wating for one.
well when you get one talk to them about homebrew, since it's up to them
depends on the setting and the campaign they're running
im trying to play dnd but im not really sure how tto staart

Currently watching vox campaign 1 to learn some shit
i wanna start playing to learn how the game works, but man timezones..
Don't worry about timezones as hard limits. Some people are available early or late.
What are the best spells for a 20th lvl cleric to have?
Also maybe good fighting combos that are possible
The cleric I have rn is the first time I’ve ever played one
It's an international community, you'll find someone playing at any time.
really? that's good to hear, though i was spending my time earlier trying to figure out where and what time 😃
thanks a ton! random question, anyone playing sorcerer? any tips?
It sounds like you want #optimization
Stay in the back, avoid melee, find ways to get your HP up and/or ways to restore it as you take damage. Sorcerers are squishy.
But also make use of those metamagic options!
i tried solo play using the sorcerer and i almost died (the shtty rolls didn't help at all)
Welcome!
Mass Heal is really good. Power Word Heal is also really nice and then personally I like True Resurrection but that's a really expensive spell so Gate is a better option over that.
Mass Heal though is #1 though for a max level cleric.
Then for slightly lower level spells I've enjoyed using Holy Aura, Plane Shift, Word of Recall, Forbiddance, Summon Celestial and Spirit Guardians.
👋
hello. i am new here. what should i do in dnd?
Welcome!
Can you be a little more specific? 😅
Are you trying to ask how to play D&D?
yes

Step 1. Get a D20.
Step 2. ...
Step 3. Profit.
How would I go about creating an underpants gnome character?
Asking the real questions here.
Start by finding a DM who’d play along with it.
On the topic of real questions. Are there any places that give you an idea of how many dice you should have for the various roles? I played my second AL game today and found myself buying a set of 3 d4s to hand out for my bless. And both my partner and I found ourselves constantly needing extra d6s for multirolls.
Can somebody teach me how to play dnd on roll20 I am totally a newbie and don't know anything
And I know you can just run off a standard set, but rolling a single die five times gets tedious.
is there a character which you can upgrade everything 100% and be human?
Probably depends more on your character than anything else.
The Roll20 wiki has some good starter information.
https://wiki.roll20.net/Main_Page
Not sure what you mean here. 😅
hello sorry to bother you in your discussion but I don't have the player's book so I can't come up with the ideals of my character, some examples that I can draw inspiration from please?
You're "human" if you choose human for your race.
You can get started with the free Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Have you considered a gnome rogue who has a penchant for stealing certain articles of clothing?
It's an example?
Sometimes people say I have to make my own character and sometimes the DM makes them am confused
It's a suggestion. Inspired by the creations of Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
Here’s an example:
Tradition. The ancient traditions of worship and sacrifice must be preserved and upheld.
This site has a randomizer to see more examples: https://www.kassoon.com/dnd/5e/personality-ideals-bonds-flaws/
I guess typically you'd make your own, but sometimes the DM might have a particular party in mind for his game.
Generally players work with the DM to make their own characters.
so one of his ideals is "When I want only a few things I have it, whether legally or not?"
Thank ♡☆
But whether a specific game does that or uses pregenerated characters depends on the game.
so no?
Hang on. Now I need to refer to my book.
So like in game how does the attacks work , I mean how do I know my character attacks ,spells etc
Can you rephrase your question?
That’s all described in the rules linked in the pinned messages in this channel.
thank you everyone for the help, see you soon!♡☆
If you choose human for your race, you’re human. That’s the only qualifier.
More tryna understand the game mechanics
I don’t think I’d call them any more or less “upgradeable” than any other race.
But I’m not exactly sure what you mean by “upgrade everything” to begin with.
Right, which are in the rules. See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MakinganAttack
Do you have specific points where you’re confused?
i mean to increase mana, health, level etc.
Mana isn’t a thing.
Every character’s max HP increases when they level up.
And every character can level up regardless of their race.
Ahh let me give it a thorough reaf and I will let u know what my walnut don't understand
The vast majority of a character’s abilities come from their class, not their race.
And any race can use any class.
Whoa whoa whoa. My character saved the day with his racial traits today.
I didn’t say racial traits aren’t useful.
But a class inarguably defines a character’s abilities more than a race, because they get new abilities from their class every time they level up.
I feel like levelling into racial abilities would be kinda cool.
You do get levelled racial stuff though
Like, as your character matures through adventuring, it comes to understand its own innate abilities a little better.
Like what?
There are a few races that unlock new abilities at higher levels.
But none of them higher than level 5.
And I’d say those are the exception, not the norm.
How do u level up , and holu moly there is so much in combat to remember
There is, but there isn't. The core of it all is pretty straightforward. The rest you can have handy on cheat sheets or in an app.
As for levelling, that depends on how you're playing. I've only played AL games so far and you automatically level up at the end of each session.
What's a session
A game.
How long does a game run?
Anywhere between 2 and 8 hours, with 3-4 as a common length.
A campaign (a series of sessions) can be weeks, months, or years, even.
hi, im new to dnd. how do i play
What if someone happened to leave ib between

Up to the group if the game continues or not. Probably it will go on.
@smoky adder How many times a day do you use that ? new command?
Do u have a group?
A few.
Wasn’t me that time, but it gets used a lot.

Gaining a Level
Typically, a character starts at 1st level and advances in level by adventuring. Gaining a level improves your attributes, can unlock new class features or new spells, and generally increases your might as an adventurer.
There are two common ways to determine when you gain a level, and your DM will let you know which is used in your campaign.
- Experience Points. In these campaigns, experience points (XP) fuel level advancement and are most often the reward for completing combat encounters. When your total XP reaches certain thresholds, you gain a level.
- Milestone. These campaigns let the story drive advancement, awarding levels when adventurers accomplish significant goals in the campaign. Many official adventures use this method.
A character can grow to a maximum of 20th level. Your DM might have you begin at a higher level, or might end the campaign at a lower one. Some games continue past 20th level with the use Epic Boons.
Hi all! Quick question here. How would one go about finding EN same room groups in a non EN country? Is there a dedicated channel here, do you know of any websites?
Living abroad, looking for a weekly session long term campaign, but in English. Starting to look at online sessions as well, but to be honest, I'd prefer the around the table experience. Just impossible to easily find a group or community where I live.
And there’s a good cheat sheet here for what to do on your turn:
https://media.wizards.com/2022/dnd/downloads/dnd_turn_ref_2022.pdf
A really good question. Do you have any English-speaking communities near you? Doesn’t have to be tabletop-related. I’d just find people you can speak with and see if any are into D&D, or are interested in trying.
Yeah, the best way to find a local group is to search locally.
Even if it’s through a general-interest online community specific to your area.
Local game stores and libraries can also be good places to check.
is online or in person better?
Makes sense! Thanks, will start walking around and finding. LatAm Chile, so English speaking communities exist. But it's a tough one. Haha
Yes.
They’re different, so it’s just a matter of preference.
That'd be a personal preference my dude.
How much do you despise being in a room with people for long periods of time?
as long as they're my friends im good
but unfortunately there's the dilemma of "i dont have friends right now"
Also, if it's an AL game, how willing are you to put up with that person who thinks showers are a weekly event?
well considering i am that person
In person you have body language, immediate feedback, crosstalk, you can hand out a handout, you can get up, you can share snacks.
Online you have much easier access to your online resources, dice rollers, trackers, battlemaps with dynamic lighting, images on demand.
Finding a group is a tough part of the hobby regardless of format.
And that depends on your situation.
In person, the enemy is geography. Online you can search the entire world.
I've been playing AL at a local game store. That's easy as to get in to if you book a spot quick enough.
I made this guide with info about searching for groups online and offline: #third-party message
Time zones are your enemy. Can I get up at 2am for a game? Sure. Will I? Probably not.
i would
Don't look at time zones except through a converter. Doesn't matter if your 6pm is someone else's 7am or ten at night, long as you're all free together.
I used to wake up at 2am for work. I quit that job for a reason. Now I get up at the late hour of 4:30am.
Yeah, looking at the LFP and LFDM channels, worldtimebuddy.com has been my friend.
GENERAL ADVICE
• Cast a wide net.
I had the auto tinder swiper gif lined up, but I can't add it in this channel 😦
That's a pet peeve of mine where they list a time zone but not a time
Just off the top of my head, there's here, Roll20, DNDB forums...
Oh gosh yes. That's not a pet peeve, that's poor communication. You're advertising to a worldwide audience, folks!
No gifs and no memes are allowed on this server..
But we verge off topic
How do you create a dnd campaign on roll20
Just make everyone use UTC in their listings. Problem solved.
Hammertime links is what j use
Their YouTube and help sections are pretty useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoyQs0Cv4p0
Are there any other useful services other than roll20
Depends on what you’re looking for.
Auto translates into the viewers time
Are there such things as solo campaigns? Or do you have to have 3+ people
D&D is designed for a group. Some folks have made workarounds for solo play, of course, but by that point you probably don’t need an online virtual tabletop.
Ok
If you're a new player, don't do it. My partner and I tried it, it was awful.
Do I need a pc to play?
PC as in computer? No. PC as in player character? Yes, unless you’re the DM.
Depends how you're playing. In person, definitely not. Online, depends on how the game is being run
Some methods are more phone friendly than others
Ohhh .... It's like the same when I misunderstood DM as direct message 🗿man they need to change these abbreviations
There’s jargon in any community. You get used to it after a bit.
Not to mention fifty million acronyms with fifty million uses.
Not needed, but a laptop or tablet makes keeping track of things so much easier, especially as a newer player.
🗿so umm ...so do u all play on roll20
I think you'll find DM has meant Dungeon Master a lot longer than it's meant Direct Message.
I play mostly over discord. Sometimes we use roll20 for battlemaps
I've always preferred paper, even when I started
Like u use discord VC and use your token on roll20 as my small penut brain understand
Of course, with anything, personal preference also comes into play.
Howdy I'm interested in getting into DnD more
Yeah you can, roll20 also has a voice and video thing built in so you don't need discord
So like where does use of paper come from? I didn't even knew I would need paper
Literally every YouTube video : u have friends good let's go don't need anything else
Some people prefer to manage their HP and spell slots on a paper character sheet.
When you play in person often folks have the paper sheets
🗿yeah that's where my problem starts . I got a roll20 account and I don't even know how to join a game
Speaking of paper. Are there any digital AL log sheets that aren't just a pdf that's tedious to fill in?
Umm so like when a game starts r u given time to make your character do his stats and stuff?
Are DMs hard to find?
It’s common practice to have a session before you actually begin playing to discuss expectations, character creation, and other logistical stuff.
Any of u is a DM?
Some of us are, but don’t request to join our games. Use the appropriate channels.
Generally, there are more players than DMs. Finding a group takes time which is why we have #find-a-game and the #750812887697588356 channels
Many of us are DMs. But that doesn't mean we're DMs looking for players at the moment. Hence the need to search.
Roll20 has a forum if I recall, and some people post there about groups
That's the shit of it though. I want to get into DMing, but I have a lot to learn before I get there, so I need a group to play with.
You don't actually have to start as a player
I’d been playing for six months before DMing. While it’s tricky, it’s not nearly as big a deal as some folks on the outside think.
What's better in your opinion for bard: Yuan-Ti or Verdan?
Telepathic insight + Persuasion vs Darkvision, magic resistance, poison resistance
Sure, but it helps if you have experience with the rules beforehand.
I gonna find a game< try to play< fail horribly< back to warthunder
A good question for #character-discussion or even possibly #dnd-discussion.
It helps sure. But I know several people who started with DMing and did fine
If what someone actually wants to do is DM, then it is 100% possible for them to simply DM
Are there different playing type?
Hi
We're also coming back around to that personal preference thing as well.
Do you guys have a site to play dnd online?
In a way. Some like a hack-and-slash game where they don’t think much about characters or logic. Some do deep character arcs. What people want out of the game and how they approach it does vary.

Just FYI, it's nice if you turn off the reply ping for an ongoing conversation. There's no need to ping when we're actively talking
That post gives a good overview of how to play online.
Yeah, but when there's a few different convos going on in one channel, it helps avoid confusion.
You can reply but turn off the ping.
Can you give me a real website that plays online?
Like Roll20? I don’t know what you mean precisely.
Thanks
Not sure of your context, but I'm guessing original content.
"original character", a term used by some to refer to their player character. It originates more from the fan fiction sphere and isn't really a D&D specific term

Helloo im thinking of starting a week long campaign with some friends but its my first time being a dm, i get the general idea but was wondering if anyone had some like top 3 tips of things to do or not to do? How much should i plan out before hand?
Or just go wit the flow
Do not plan too much, things will go off the rails fast and your planning will most likely be useless, I have experienced this firsthand
Plan the first 10 plays and go from there? :p
I mean, the whole camps story should be planned out, but if your doing a more sandbox-y camp then maybe
Just, have a general idea for everything
Plot out the confines of the world and everything inside
But leave them to explore it
Yes
Tgank you that really helped 😉
Ill go make the map 😉
How do you control summons with beyond DnD? Is there a way to click summon's skills?
I'm curious how summon from drakewarden ranger works
add your summons to the extras tab
pets like the drakwarden drake have their statblock as part of your actions tab if you scroll down
Yeah but no attack button
you could make a custom action to put their attack where your own attacks are
Is this the only way?
pretty much I think?
Alright thank you
hey
Hii
I've never played D&D but i've always wanted to try it out, can someone point me where I could do that online ? preferably by text, cause I'm not too confortable chatting with strangers by voice
there are some text-only campaigns you could find in #looking-for-players !
alright I'll check it out, thanksss
np
Also read about "west march", maybe you would like it
what is that ?
Massive text-based DnD adventures
No, that's not quite what West Marches means
West Marches is a form of community based play where there are multiple DMs and a large pool of players all playing within a shared world. It can be played via voice, text, or a combination of both (depends on the community). Groups are fluid and you might play with one DM and group of players one week, a different DM and group the next
Hi! I've never played D&D before, but I've been interested in getting into for a while. I've never had a group to play with, and I basically know nothing about D&D. Where should I start?

Thank you 🙂
hey how do i join a party?
Visit #find-a-game , read the instructions carefully, best of luck!
hi, im Death. i would like to join a homebrew game.
This is a little longer than 3 tips, but it's not too overwhelming (in my view) to give you a good foundation: https://howtogm.guide/
Hello! i am new to dnd, nice to meet you all!
Hello! I am also new to DnD, and it is indeed very nice to meet everyone!
hi
The Basic Rules includes all you need to get started playing.
Besides the D&D Beyond forums, you can do play-by-post on sites like Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Hi
so where are the games played?
im a player!
Not on this server. Folks may use Discord, a virtual tabletop like Roll20 or Owlbear, or some other method entirely.
Foundry is great
are you good with homebrew classes?
"Good" in what way?
A new player should avoid homebrew classes ; it is much safer to stick to official options
You will need to talk to your DM about what homebrew is allowed
To discuss homebrew, the channel linked above works
This is a great place to learn

As a newcomer, the hardest and most discouraging part about trying to get started is just trying to find a group
#looking-for-players is a good resource but honestly I’m still struggling
Also a newb! There is a ton of great info on here. Actually playing a Star Wars RPG this weekend with some friends and then diving into D&D after that
@harsh fjord hey bud, you got that "find a group" post handy?
Honestly I think I’d prefer playing in person but finding an in person group is even harder
This one? #third-party message
Have you looked into community campaigns such as Adventure League?
It can allow you to play both in person and online with the same character.
What exactly is the Adventure League?
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

We have several channels to discuss Adventurers League play:
• #al-admin-questions — Ask the AL Admins questions
• #adventurers-league — Chat about AL games, events, how to get started, AL characters, or other general AL chatter.
• #1050206875079155742 — Adventurers League rules discussion and questions. General D&D rules discussion belongs in #dnd-rules
• #al-dm-discussion — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for AL Dungeon Masters of all levels of experience to discuss their games, share tips, or share constructive feedback.
• #al-dungeoncraft — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for fledgling or experienced AL authors to discuss the Dungeoncraft program, ask questions, offer tips, or share constructive feedback.
Adventurers League is D&D's official community campaign.
Games are done using guidelines everyone agrees to use to ensure a consistent and balanced experience. This gives players the opportunity to take their AL characters from one AL game to another, regardless if it's played online, in person, or run by a different DM.
Adventurers League feels similar to that of Marvels cinematic universe
A majority of AL games are self contained single-session adventures, though a good portion of hardcovers and other adventure do tell a large overarching story over the course of several sessions.
It does come with a trade off though.
Ok so 100% a noob like I have no idea how to play or how to create a character. What class is best for a beginner, and what are things I should be wary of when building my character?
Because each session is often made up of a different dm and group of players, your character's backstory won't be used.
If you’re learning on your own, fighter, rogue, monk, and barbarian are easiest by dint of having the fewest mechanics. But any class is learnable, even solo; it’s just trickier if you tackle spellcasting on your own.
You can find AL one shots listed for the full month of February here: https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1050208806006702081
As for pitfalls, don’t get attached to the character you build because they should fit the game and table. Be willing to tweak. Learning the process is more important than having a character who’s ready to be played.
Also, keep your backstory brief—a paragraph or two should be enough to get started.

Aw man, but I have such a cool character for a dnd campaign
Come up with multiple concepts!
Like I said, it comes at a trade off.
Looks like I gotta search up more rockstars in history
Ok thank you so much
What is the alternative to Adventurers league?
You can find the guidelines for AL characters in the AL Player's guide here: https://dnd.wizards.com/adventurers-league
There is West Marches, but each one different from one another and most like only be usable within that specific community.
And you can still have a character backstory in AL. It's just that it's primarily relevant in how it makes your character act in game. The plots won't be tailored to you
Thanks Ill look into that later
Oh that's fine, I still wanted some of my characters to have a backstory
That makes me wonder if most of the oneshots I played are connected with the adventurers league
For more details about AL feel free to ask in #adventurers-league
or campaigns too
It's unlikely.
As they need to be AL specific pre-written adventures that come with adventure codes.
We were probably foolin' around then >.>
how to know when to make a contested skill check?
As a player? The DM will tell you.
as a dm
You ask a player to make a skill check against a DC you believe suits the situation.
This is a good breakdown: https://blackcitadelrpg.com/skill-checks-5e/#Contested_Skill_Checks
How does attunement work in D&D? I current have a rare magic item called Barrier Tattoo in my current session.
Attuning to an item requires a creature to spend a short rest focused on only that item while being in physical contact with it (this can't be the same short rest used to learn the item's properties). An item can be attuned to only one creature at a time, and a creature can be attuned to no more than three magic items at a time.
Full details can be found here in the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/magic-items#Attunement
Hello
Hi
What’s your first name
Helloo im kinda a newcomer, played 2 games before and looking for a game rn. I was looking at communitys to maybe see if thats something I'd be interested in but I'm not sure what westmarch or one shot is. If anyone would like to explain or if theres a list of what is what somewhere
Welcome

If you're unfamiliar with dnd, feel free to start with the basic rules and other resources in the links above.
A one-shot is a game that concludes in a single session (anywhere between 2 and 4 or 5 hours of play).
A westmarch is a sort of living world with a wide roster of DMs and players. A DM says they want to run an adventure in a part of the world, and players sign up for it, thus meaning you may not routinely play with the same DM or group. I know there's more to it and they probably vary in structure, but that's my basic understanding.
Alright thanks!
What's noncore Dnd?
Leave the defaults on D&D Beyond's first page if you don't have a DM yet.
Ok
But to answer the question, it's stuff the company has published but not released officially (which is confusing, I know) in a major book publication.
like stuff that isn't finished or something?
It's stuff made for like charities but are not officially published/released material. A weird limbo category.
ah, I usually follow the shit my dm says to a tee when it comes to DND beyonds first character creation page because I have genuinely 0 clue
Which is not a terrible strategy, honestly.
Yeah it's worked for this campaign and it's gonna end in about 4 sessions give or take
new ones starting soon after and I'm really excited so
Hello 👋🏻, I’ve played once with my boyfriend his brother and friends. And I’ve been wanting to play again really bad however they don’t have much time so I’m wondering how can I find people to play with on here?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Follow the channel linked in the bot post above!
So, recently decided to get into DnD. Fresh with TTRPG's (Prior experience was only Warhammer AoS: Soulbound) and man, this was a lot more complicated than expected.
I did what I could to follow the Players Handbook to make a character, but it felt like I was going all over the place in it (because I was...).
Thankfully, some (ironically) useful guides helped me out, and I have a better understanding of DnD.
Have yet to play it though. So heres hoping for the best!
