how does spellcasting work (spells and cantrips) and what do you write on the spell sheet?
Read the Spellcasting section of the free Basic Rules
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting
ok
What you write down depends on your class.
What do you say. Should I try a oneshot or go thru a full campaign? I am not sure if I will be able to go on with my char for sooo long for a first try. Also I don't know I would like. So what do you guys think? What you did for your 1st games?
A one shot is a good way to get the feel for the game mechanics but not feel like you have to be committed to a specific play group and/or campaign.
I started with a group of IRL friends so committing to a campaign was fairly easy as I already knew and had fun with the folks I'd be playing D&D with.
One-shots can also be a good place to learn since the consequences of error aren't as long-lasting.
So it's a good chance to experiment and try things out.
Yeah I too think something shorter would be better. Especially when I am going to play alone (w/out knowing anyone).
Something that I feel is really important is also realizing that sometimes your first ever game does not go well. It is important to keep trying to see if the game meshes well with you.
My first game as a player did not go well.
I left halfway in the session, it was an echoing play area in an LGS and the environment gave me an intense headache. That didn't stop me from wanting to keep going, the first environment wasn't for me.
The second try at a different LGS is what was responsible for me interacting with DND for about 2 years.
Yeah I watched a few vidoes and some of them said that might happen. That I might not like the group or the storyline. Btw what's LGS
Local game store.
thx
Question: would you be able to use Oath of the Open Sea’s Fog Cloud to maximum effectiveness with a reach weapon?
I haven't gamed in a couple decades. Looking locally to play and seeing some LGS, Gamer Bars and Java shops are Pay-to-Play. One of them is charging $110 for 8 2 to 3 hours sessions. When did this become a money-making enterprise?
Because I know it gives the blinded condition to enemies, which means they can’t hit you well but you can hit them well
The short answer: when folks realized there’s a market.
To elaborate: Lots of folks want to play but far fewer want to DM. Besides which, the DM does (or at least can) invest a fair amount of time/money/labor into the game, so getting a return on investment makes sense. To say nothing of if a game store is closing its doors to accommodate a game.
When was it not?
The folks in #third-party could help you find an answer there.
Do game shops not have …rent? Wages? Bills?
Well, $110 per player for a 16-24 hour campaign. Better be Oscar-worthy.
If it is not worth it to you, dont do it?
My day, I'm used to taking over a buddy's living room or dining table. The only money that was spent was for pizza sodas or snacks
When players outnumber DMs. If there's a demand then there's a market. Welcome to free market 101. Noone is obligated to pay paid DMs.
If you want you want to do that, do that?
I dont get being surprised that other options exist
Has it really become THAT popular?
It is indeed a choice. Just like how it’s a choice to exit a campaign if it feels like it’s not worth it (of course, you explain yourself politely).
You are asking this in a discord run by the company that produces the game
There are plenty of free DMs out there
there was a D&D movie …a year ago?
I don't charge my players to DM but if I ever do DM to strangers I would charge money to reduce the chances they'll flake on me.
There are live streams with tens of thousands of subs
And most of the time the paid ones aren’t really that unreasonable. I mean, the most for one session I’ve seen so far is 20$. If you guys meet once per week, that’s not so bad in terms of cost.
This is probably well beyond the channel’s scope. Talking about paid DMing is probably a better fit for #dnd-discussion.
There has been a half a dozen movies and a Saturday morning cartoon series.
That price, I don't mind.
Which should be an answer to your question
No. It doesn't. Most flopped.
$110 for approximately 20 hours (16-24 hours) comes to $5.5 per hour (or $22 per "4 hour session")
#dnd-discussion would be a better channel for this conversation.
It is a shock, still. Like I said, I ve been out for quite a while. It was a game for the unpopular kids, kinda, last I Gamed
Well, there are older gamers, like myself, here. You can hang out in #dnd-elder-editions to talk about the older editions.
It’s gone a lot more mainsteam, especially in the past ten or so years.
The only reason why I'm getting back into it was that my daughter found my old bag of dice and wants to learn how to play.
It has literally been since the early 90s since I have last gamed.
Hello everyone!
Some of it will be familiar, but plenty won’t. Lots of folks are jumping into D&D now because the current edition is fairly accessible, on a few scales.
So how does this discord work? I'm looking for a group to play with, and I have a lvl1 character ready that used the point-buy system. Not really sure where to go from here though
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Ahh
Did you go through the free Basic Rules yet?
Yeah. Honestly I'm playing with a group currently, but since I broke my leg I wanted to play more. Sucks being confined so much.
Playing online is the new normal these days.
I guess I'm a fuddy duddy cause I'm not used to online gaming when it comes to dnd. I feel like online games tend to be more horror than fun
It’s about finding the right group, which can be tough as there are lots out there.
I can imagine. Is a lot of it text based? Or is there mostly vc. I have a kid and I would feel bad if he started crying while on vc
I think voice is more common, but you can find text-based. Some sites specialize in it.
Push to talk is also an option.
Gotcha. I like vc, I just don't wanna ruin others experiences
Eh, the mute button exists. I think folks who play online tend to recognize that other things may interrupt, but if people can try to mitigate them, it should be okay.
One of my players has a cat and every so often she forgets to mute herself while she talks to her cat...
Player: "Who's a pretty boy?"
DM (me): "Thanks but that won't get you an Inspiration though."
Sweet. I tend to prefer long campaigns over one shots. I also know my job prevents easy scheduling. It's hard to plan a session around a first responder.
Sounds like a perfect bard lol. INSPIRED
Well, you have to find a the right group who will understand your schedule.
Play-by-post (aka text-based) may be good for you, but they never seem to formally end, in my limited experience. That’s probably true of campaigns generally, but I think the metaphorical distance thanks to the screen and not seeing folks routinely adds to that.
I'm sure it's easier for people to "forget" that they have an obligation when it's virtual
I'm guilty of it when my schedule gets hectic.
Well, seems like you know what you’re after. This channel is a reliable go-to if you have further questions; if you need to be redirected, folks are good about that.
I appreciate it. Now to find a game I suppose.
This is why I run reserves for my games. Always expect attrition.
Maybe i should ask it here better, im making a character, but i dont understand score calculations
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
How to get the scores or how to figure the bonus?
Both
Up there a smidge.
Depends on dm preference. There is a point buy system where you have limited points to spend on all stats, or you can roll 4d6 and drop the lowest dice.
Yeah, there’s three main ways to get your ability score, or your DM might even have their own.
If you don’t have a DM yet, then standard array or point buy is probably the safest starting point.
Regardless of which method you use, though, getting your ability score modifiers is always the same.
You just look it up on the table.
Point buy is safer (no luck needed), but rolling has a chance to give you really fun stats. One of my current characters has really good charisma and intelligence, and a negative 3 in strength and con. It's a glass Cannon
That's the way we always did it in the 80s and 90s. 6 rolls of 4d6 drop the lowest. After you get the 6 numbers you choose where they go.
Yep. That's how we did it overseas
Honestly a blast when you get to build a ridiculous character who can persuade a door to open, but can't physically push the door.
That’s still the primary method in the rules today, too.
Quick question, can I use an improvised weapon such as like a quick made knife to sneak attack with?
That's up to your DM if the improvised made "shank" is considered a knife (a finesse weapon).
Yep. A weapon has to be either finesse or ranged to be eligible for Sneak Attack. Whether an improvised weapon has the related properties isn’t explicit in the rules.
SICK
Ty so muchhh
I thought normally in ADnD you did 3d6 in order?
I like doing point buy, because it's the one I'm most used to and simple, it's like putting points into abilities.
I like point buy bc of how balanced it is
No one can get stupid high or stupid low rolls
Outside of one very specific case you can’t get more than a +3 modifier in any one stat at level 1
I like point buy for both those reasons.
Me when I hav e aprofiecient +5 on dex stealth
On a ranger..
The biggest impact is to attack rolls and spell save dcs imo. When you have a 10% higher hit chance than everyone else you feel a lot stronger
Ooh true
The game expects a +3 to your main stat at levels 1-4, so monsters are balanced around that
Im going thorough the discord channels tutorial, popping in and saying hi to everyone, cant wait to start playing with yall!
Welcome aboard!
so im assuming go to find-a-game to get started?
Have you read the basic rules?
Or have you played before?
reading the rules now
ive followed for some time

great :)
I don’t know how this stuff works, 😭🙏
Well, I have the app but I’m not sure how to use it that’s all.
Are you here for a game to join? To become a DM? Looking for Charecter advice?
Yes I am looking for a game as well
Oh. What are you confused about? Also, the PC version is much better :)
I am getting a computer in two weeks due to being a little broke so I’m on phone
Then i would refer going to #750812887697588356 or message someone on #looking-for-players
Alright! That works.
Yeah, the phone version kinda sucks. I used it myself, PC much preferred and less swiping and clicking front and back :)
Question about Spare the dying. It says Touch a creature it with 0 hit points it becomes stable. Do they have 0 hp or 1 after? Are they still considered down or standing?
They still have zero HP. They're just no longer making death saves and are stable.
The briefest way I can explain it is the Dungeon Master narrates the environment, NPCS, and a scenario.
Then you as a player narrate how you would like to handle the scenario through your character.
And to determine wether you succeed or fail, you roll dice to determine the outcome.
lol, thank you I’ll asked my dad he has been playing sense he was a kid, he’s 65 or 64
Pretty sure stable is unconsious, but no need for saving throws
👍
Good luck in your adventures @nocturne vine ^^
Thanks!
Follow up question if they're unconscious and I heal them (I'm a cleric) does it wake them up as well?
Nope
Uncoinsous is a state, like paralyzed
They will get their HP back tho
From the healing spell
Yep, having HP will remove unconsciousness.
You sure?
Wouldn't that be like a same level as remove stunned, paralysed and so on?
You will need a condition remover spell, i am pretty sure
If damage reduces you to 0 hit points and fails to kill you, you fall unconscious. This unconsciousness ends if you regain any hit points.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#FallingUnconscious
Fair, you win. I have been thaught wrong then. I once ate a mushroom in a game, made me unconsciouss (or maybe it was a magic shroom then, bc magic sleep idk?) but healing didn't help
The DM may have distinguished between unconsciousness via zero HP and general unconsciousness, which wouldn't necessarily end via regaining HP.
👍🏻
Why do some sessions say "owlbear", is that like.. a website or smth?
Owlbear Rodeo is a virtual tabletop, yes.
@kitkrumb it's a vtt
ouhh
heya, i am a complete newcomer to dnd. i wanted to try something that could improve my imagination and figurative speech a bit, but i have 0 experience and i need some help. like what to start with, and how to play and stuff. anyone care to help?

oha
Take your time reading the free basic rules.
Essentially the first 4 chapters.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
👍 thank you
I think the most important thing when starting and making a character, is asking yourself what exactly do you want to do.
the thing is, i have no idea
It’s a possible first step.
And something that needs to be done before you can start a game as a player.
First step is asking yourself what you want to do imo. What kind of game you want to play.
OOOHH THIS LOOKS FUN!?
it's amazing
Owlbear is usually what I use, too lazy to learn Roll20...
what kinds are there then?
I'm just looking at the trailer buit it looks SOO much easier!
Hey, I was wondering if its possible to play completely online usin D&D Beyond??
You’ll need some way to communicate with your group.
D&D Beyond is just a tool for character sheets and digital books.
You may want to use a virtual tabletop (VTT) for battlemaps or else use theatre of the mind.
Like Discord or Zoom or whatever.
Theres games the explore character backstory, games that are rules heavy and RP light, for people who love combat. Theres hybrids of the two. Theres a lot, but how did you learn about dnd, maybe that'll help you find your type of game.
Is that free
At its core
it's just image layering, all you need for a VTT at the bare minimum
minimal hassle or fuss
There are optional extensions to add stuff, like health bars or path making or movement tracking, but none are necessary
There are free VTTs like owlbear.rodeo and Roll20 (free accounts).
i knew a dungeon master once, he intrigued me a lot, and since im a fantasy writer, i thought dnd might be a useful tool and hobby to use and learn for my works
Got ya, thank you, once I have one of those it'll be possible tho??
Ah thats perfect, sounds like you want a game where the player characters and their choices take center stage.
You can ask more about VTTs in #third-party
kind of, i mean, it seems more creative and requires improvisation, and im also here to train that
hi how do i find a group to play with
but then also i like to know whats going on, as in stuff that is focused on rules mainly
At the core, all you need to play DND is the ability to communicate
using DNDBeyond is a measure of ease of access and use for character sheets and a compendium, using a VTT is a measure of having a battlemap with objectivity instead of theater of the mind
Thankfully the rules are pretty easy to learn and easy to look up if you dont know something. But then we know now that you want to tell a story, what story is that going to be, or rather, how is that story going to start.
how do i find a group to play with
Hey I hear someone was looking for players
tell a story?
I just don't know how to play online so bear with me
You can use #find-a-game or browse any other measure of game finding, such as internet forums or other discord servers
can i use filters
simple replacement:
Instead of meeting in person at a table
You meet online in a voice call (typically)
Every character tells a story, what kind of story will yours tell? Comedy? Tragedy? A story aboiut revenge?
i have no idea, that depends on the setting i suppose?
Oh cool. I was thinking that we needed tabletops or sum
You can also learn about D&D's official community campaign in #adventurers-league .
As there are D&D AL events posted in #1050206572535623690
Some people even use Tabletop Simular lol
can i use time zone filters
Oh. I need to pay for that?
It does, but its a good place to start with a character, and things can be adjusted to fit the world when joining a dm, they'll give you the slot in the world that your character fills and work with you if you know what you want to do.
im also pretty new
i really dont know what i want to do though, and improvisation is hard for me
Hmm, very good point, let me see if I can help
thank you
exposing personal information isn't allowed here
oh
You can just say whether or not you're a minor or adult, but specifics like "My name is Walter Hartwell White, I live at 308..." isn't allowed
something about safety measures, yknow
internet anonymity privacy safety
ok sorry ill keep that in mind
it's fine, just keep it in mind
No worries, take your time with it. Honestly I just play music until a song really catches my interest and thats how I start making all my characters.
no making characters isnt difficult, but making them fit the scenario is
and i'd have to look into the specific requirements
since its midnight for me i'll look into it tomorrow though, thanks Sooth
I really wanted to play as a player but I'm like 2 years being the forever dm on real life. And I never did a player part before... I mean... I did once but I was 5 so I could try and I promise to be "that guy"
best bet is to honestly just browse the looking for player chat for a beginer friendly game in your time zone, may not find one right away but they come up pretty often on the weekend.
(Or close to your time zone)
thank you
No be*
#find-a-game will have instruction on how to make a post for looking for DM as #750812887697588356 is a channel where post are put by a bot.
If you decide to be DM i'd love to play with you
It seems they want to take a break from DMing and would prefer to be a player instead.
I understand, I was just saying
Well I wanted to try to be a player and also I never roleplayed in english so I can not be as good
Oh I see
Yeah
Well regardless, it would be awesome if we get into the same campaign
Well yeah...
Thank you again dude
Just a extra question how do I know that a dm accepted me as a player?
Typically you message the DM directly and you have a conversation.
If it seems you're compatible with their campaign and DMing style, they'll let you know.
Don't they usually dm you or invite you in the server ig?
(If they hav eone that is
It will vary.
There are quite a few ways to play that next steps will vary.
I invite players to the game lobby of a VTT where I run my games.
Well... To be honest it's one of my first time using discord as well... My friends told me that was cool so I did installed but never used so I kinda don't know how to dm someone
I think discord has a tutorial video, though it works fairly straightforward.
You can right click on someone's name and select message.
Though to keep things relevant to the topic of #dnd-newcomers .
Your best approach is to respond in the threads of people's posts in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community .
I'd also recommend visiting your local game-shop, library, school club, and conventions for in person dnd games that are hosted.
yo i'm still having trouble finding a game any more tips
Are you only looking on this server?
What have you tried so far?
realll ive joined so many discord servers and its so hard to find a game where people are looking for a group currently
Should I buy the current version of the players handbook while it's on sale or wait for the new version I hear is coming
im looking to do a mini campaign tonight if i could find a dm thats down
The company touts that the rules revision should be compatible with 5e material, but whether that's true remains to be seen. I'd say it depends on which iteration of the rules you prefer and if you want to start playing sooner or later.
Reply to the posts in #looking-for-players or post an ad yourself in #750812887697588356. The instructions for the latter are in #find-a-game.
That typically requires some prep time and results will vary as it's typically the DM who has to do the prep work.
I kinda know how to do fast improv I just don't know how to play online
?tag new online
If you really want a mini campaign I can do but I really don't go well in last time sessions like I do in prep
its basically just vc or text chatting but there are also virtual gameboards you can settup
Oh that's simple
Then at least one more person and it's done
Ig
I can do that if you want to
im up for it ive nothing better to do lol
Hey, folks, sending game invites/requests outside the usual channels is against the rules, so take it to DMs: #1133105750051397782 message
Ok sorry
im up for it haha
So literally… my only dnd experience is (almost) finishing first season of dungeons and daddies. So… I don’t really know anything, but if I wanted to learn all abt like… how to dnd. Where would I look…

Are there more pre-made introductory demos? Won't lie that was pretty fun
Not that I'm aware of.
I’m not gonna lie I’m extremely overwhelmed 😅😭 like I have my character sheet but I never played Dnd I just only watched it.
It’s a game. Take your time learning it
Thanks I just got overstimulated sorry 🤦🏿♀️
I’ve played dnd like three times before I’m not very good but I know how to play I’m looking for a group is any group okay with beginners?
wassa
#find-a-game is the place to look for games, this channel is to answer questions by new players
Okay so how does death work, is it damage that surpasses your go max, like if you max hp is 12 and something does 14 will THA knock them unconscious or kill them, if it knocks them unconscious will it need to be equal to or above their hp max the damage?
if you have an HP max of 10, and you currently have 10 hit points
it would take 20 damage to instakill you. 10 to put you to 0, and if the excess damage is equal to or greater than your max HP, you die.
So if you had max 10 and currently had 1, it'd take only 11 damage to instantly kill you.
Oh wow, that makes thing a lot more difficult. So another question, is there a way to instead of killing someone just knock them unconscious or does it have to kill them
You can choose for your melee attacks to be nonlethal
Thanks mate
basic rules for combat, damage and healing, right below dropping to 0 hit points
Sorry to bother but I have one really important question, a Druid wildshapes into a bear with like 10 hp and the enemy does twenty. Would that kill the play or knock them outta bear form and unconscious
whats the player's hp
For the sake of it also 10
wild shape is like an extra-extra layer to this
For the sake of everything, true Druid has 10 max, 10 current, and the beast has 10
Takes 15 damage in beast form, would be 5 excess damage transferring to the druid, leaving them at 5/10hp.
Taking 30 damage would instakill - 10 beast, out - 20 excess damage, reduces them to 0 hp - 10 excess damage, equal to max hp, death
20 would reduce the bear to 0 hp, turning them back into druid form, where they take the remaining 10 damage, leaving them at 0 hp and unconcious
and that too
Oh thanks yall
Hehe my friend playing a Druid is pissed
why?
1: If damage reduces you to 0 hit points and fails to kill you, you fall unconscious. This unconsciousness ends if you regain any hit points.
2: When you transform, you assume the beast’s hit points and Hit Dice. When you revert to your normal form, you return to the number of hit points you had before you transformed. However, if you revert as a result of dropping to 0 hit points, any excess damage carries over to your normal form.
For example, if you take 10 damage in animal form and have only 1 hit point left, you revert and take 9 damage. As long as the excess damage doesn’t reduce your normal form to 0 hit points, you aren’t knocked unconscious.
3: For example, a cleric with a maximum of 12 hit points currently has 6 hit points. If she takes 18 damage from an attack, she is reduced to 0 hit points, but 12 damage remains. Because the remaining damage equals her hit point maximum, the cleric dies.
Cause he’s “dead” so he thinks outta the game but I have a few ideas, thanks to everyone!
Care to elaborate?
i mean normally when someone's character dies you just have them make a new one
they're not out of the game, they could just, make a new character lol
I know but, in this campaign we doing it’s more or less (yall might get mad at me for this but Idrc) double life. If you get killed you have a chance everyonce in a while with a d20 and you have to get a nat 20 to revive
Don’t get too mad, it’s a fun idea for me and my friends since we are new to this
We’re they in the negative up to their max HP.
more of a 'cheated death, everyone thought they were dead, crawled out of the muck and subsisted on squirrel bones and blackberries' thing?
did they actually die or just go unconcious?
Yea, sure let’s go with that I suppose
You were asking about death saves and it wasn’t really answered.
They have to actually die to do this
Cause if they went unconscious they just do a few death saving throws
so they hit 0 hp and failed 3 death saves, or took oneshot damage?
When you’re dropped to 0 hp the player rolls a d20. This is a death saving throw.
not con saves
death saves
k
in any case
max HP is 12
14 damage kills them only if they have 0, 1, or 2 hp remaining - if 14 - their current is equal to their max of 12
if Damage - Current HP = Max HP, dead
If the player fails 3 then the character dies. The DC is 10.
Looking for a cleric or water elementalist for my campaign..or some kind of healer class. As my party will get wiped out in Day 1 if they don't find any! And I can't post b/c it's just one spot so if anyone is interested please hmu. It is an extremely well thought-out and serious campaign.
Preferably someone new who really wants to learn.
You'd use #find-a-game
But yea thanks mate, I should probably get back to the game, thanks againnn
You're in a game right now???
Which is why homebrewing is not recommended for new players.
I have done one one-shot campaign. I have made a sorta character with a backstory, just no rolls for stats. I wanted to find a text campaign, a short one shot maybe. I'm not finding any in search area though, someone lmk if they've got something like that setting up?
Have you used #find-a-game
...yes
I've got something dead serious, Kitt, what kind of character?
Rogue. A complicated elf rogue.
Then all I can say is maybe try other DND discords if you need.
Game soliciting is only for #find-a-game and its subsidiary channels
You need to distinguish between homebrew settings and homebrewing mechanics
I am extremely new anyone have advice on a good way to get started
Homebrew settings are fine, thats purely story stuff
It's just that it's recommended to keep to the vanilla game to get to grips with things
Homebrew mechanics like inventing a class, spell or item is extremely dangerous new players because they have no frame of reference to balance anything or even make it work as intended
I can help you! DM if you'd like!
and then you can start modding it around
It's like people recommending non-modded playthroughs of videogames, it lets you feel how it was intended, it lets you know what you'll be missing and what you'll be able to fix
Homebrew all the lore and settings you want, thats dnd
Dont touch homebrew mechanics. 99% out there is bad
Yep.
Anything that would help get started I have no knowledge in DND but I would like to learn
Read the pinned posts or here:
Damn, we don't even have rogues in this campaign. Shinobis are the closest thing. It's similar to an amalagam of the monk and the rogue.

Homebrew is like people coding mods for videogames but there's no barrier for entry of "make the game not crash" due to being a TTRPG, so jank can be inserted no matter how janky it is
@topaz garnet sorry to bother but I have one question, can you use a short sword as a improvised weapon for sneak attack?
literally no need
Shortswords have Finesse, and are weapons
Oh cool! I've never even heard of that.
Tbf I have only played one game. One in person game with my partner's sis. I finished it less than an hour ago. It was a one-shot.
and rogues are proficient with them
improvised weapons are
Strength, no proficiency, 1d4+str damage, no properties, doesn't count as an actual weapon.
Absolutely terrible outside of literally only dealing slightly more damage than unarmed strikes.
a shortsword has finesse, is a weapon, and a rogue can sneak attack with it, and does 1d6 damage (+ whichever modifier you use)
If you guys want to set up a game please use Dm or #find-a-game
Okidoki
in short, no, shortswords wouldn't be an improvised weapon since they're an actual weapon
you can't use improvised weapons for sneak attack
and you can use shortswords (which are proper weapons) for sneak attack natively
an improvised weapon is like, taking a rock, or an antler head off a wall, or using a goblin corpse
and sneak attack is less hardcore sneak and more 'exploiting any little advantage or distraction or hasslement to make the damage more damaging'
Hehehe, rock
however, you could use a sling to launch a decently sized pebble/rock for a sneak attack
YASSSS
since a sling is a ranged weapon
combat typically lasts way under 1 hour right
irl?
no like... 1 irl hour, or 1 ingame hour?
holy shit
good to know, ty lol
if i want to multiclass into warlock would i be able to access true polymorph?
i want to make barbarian warlock
true polymorph is 9th level, youd need 17 warlock levels to get it
which is a very bad idea
https://tabletopbuilds.com/rage-fiend/ heres a good option for a barbarian warlock
so ideally if i wanted to goof off with high power warlock spells i should be multiclassing into less barbarian levels and choose warlock itself?
well theres no point taking 3 barbarian levels, as a warlock it gives you nothing you need
Hi
ah fair enough, guess im focusing too strong into flavor

So I just bought 3 books and I still can't figure out how to pick the class warforged cleric in dndbeyond
Is that in Eberron?
How do you do the subclasses? I did get that book but haven't figured out how to subclass
so you want to be a dungeon master?
Depending on class depends when you get your subclass
What does WCCS mean?
Where are you seeing WCCS? What context
On a wiki for dnd
@fresh fable mind if I message you?
Just talk here

yep
Off the top of my head, there's the Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Kryn, Exandria...
And a lot of DMs might make their own homebrew settings
Exandria that's the one from that wiki I see.
Very interesting.
critical role wiki?
I think so yes.
Yeah that's for the Critical Role series specifically, a live game DM'd by Matt Mercer, in his own setting Exandria
Oh okay that cleared that up.
Outside of Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, it's aaallll homebrew / third party.
Remember, in context-less online discussion, the only thing anyone can assume is official rules
Tartaran, the worst Hell in the multiverse. 😇
Sorry for the confusion I'm new to all this.
I have been watching DnD for years but have no experience actually playing myself, where would a good place to start be?

Start with the free basic rules (see link above - don't need to memorize them but get familiar with how to make a character, how to make a skill check, saving throw, attack roll, and rolling damage).
If you have any specific questions as you read and learn, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel.
Thank you sm! I'll read up on that now
This may be super basic, but I cannot understand combat (or any modifiers) for rolls
Is there an ELI5 explanation?
The basic rules would be the best place to start
Plus more general sections relevant to your question
Attacks:
Variety 1, Weapon attacks: For attack and damage rolls, Melee weapons use your Strength modifier, Ranged weapons use your Dexterity modifier. A weapon with the finesse property can use either modifier. If you have proficiency with the weapon, you add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll (not the damage roll).
Variety 2, Spell attacks: You add the relevant ability modifier for where you got this power from (such as a Wizard's Intelligence, a Cleric's Wisdom, or a Sorcerer's Charisma), and your proficiency bonus. You don't add your ability modifier to damage rolls unless specified.
Ability Checks:
When you make an ability check, such as a Strength check or a Wisdom check, you add the appropriate ability modifier to the d20 roll.
If there is something in (brackets), such as on a Wisdom (Perception) check or a Dexterity (Stealth) check, you add your proficiency bonus to the total if you're proficient in that thing in the brackets.
Saving Throws:
When something tells you to make a saving throw, you make that saving throw, adding your relevant ability modifier. If you're proficient in that kind of saving throw, such as a Barbarian being proficient with Strength and Constitution saves, you'd add your proficiency bonus to that proficient save.
I hope this broke it down into concise digestibility in the singular spot
Abilities say how good you are at stuff. The bonus is what you add when it's relevant, like swinging a longsword, you add your Strength modifier.
You'll also have proficiency in some weapons, skills and maybe magic. That's a different modifier based on your level, but you add that on top.
Roll the d20, add it all up, announce your total.
Here's a one-page cheat sheet that explains what to do on your turn.
Been looking for that one for a while
You can get that and a few other good ones here:
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources
👍
Thanks everyone. I think I just need to get a handle on determining the modifiers.
Do you mean in figuring out what your modifiers are, or figuring out which modifier to apply in a given situation?
So I'm making a lvl 1 fighter with the soldier background. Which of the heavy armors would best suit my character? I do have the available strength necessary for all of them. I also want to include a shield but I don't want to be that guy with plate armor and a shield for 20 AC right off the bat.
You can’t get plate armour at lvl 1 so your fine
The class will let you know what starting armour you can choose from
how in the world do I make a character, the process is so confusing to me and it seems like it takes forever
I have an essentials kit so I have the players handbook but its just so much
and I have no idea what im doing so none of it makes sense
Have you watched any video guides
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L&si=aiItM2DbHcbBdI_g I like this playlist from the dungeon dudes
There are also other ones linked in the pins of this channel
ok, thank you
So with chain mail and a shield I have 18 AC. If I chose the defence fighting style, I would get 19 right? Seems a bit OP at lvl 1. But I guess a decent dm would know how to work around it.
This is correct, chain mail + shield + defense style is 19 AC
Its certainly good for a level 1 character, but I don't think I would call it OP. High AC isn't nearly as powerful as people make it out to be
You put all your eggs into the Defense basket. It’s very strong at level one but you also won’t be doing the most damage vat the same time
And an critical hit can still put you down instantly, so it’s not like you’re safe against bad luck
Are there any playable races similar to the Kenku that has an alternative communication style? I am mute, and I'd like to create a character that reflects that. The closest thing I could find was Skeletons in the DMG.
Thrikreen can’t speak any language except their own verbally, using telepathy for everyone else
Hmm, just realised any spell with a verbal component would be off limits
Ohhhh, that looks really promising!
The only mechanical requirement for verbal components is the ability to make sound.
So kenkus and thri-kreen can both still cast spells with verbal components.
Skeletons couldn’t though
(Technically, the latest version of kenku can speak normally altogether.)
Sure you can. Play your ribcage like a xylophone. 😜
Thats humerus
The words themselves aren't the source of the spell's power; rather, the particular combination of sounds, with specific pitch and resonance, sets the threads of magic in motion.
That's all gonna depend on the DM, of course.
And there's no official skeleton race anyway.
I don't think a "ribcage xylophone" would be able to match the exact same pitch and resonance as a vocal cord
Given that definition, Thri-Keen shouldn't be able to make those particlar sounds to cast spells, right?
Well that's the thing.
Thri Kreen can still speak their own language, so they do have vocalizations. They can cast verbal components without issue, since nothing says they can't
The actual sound that needs to be made isn't specified anywhere.
That's true, I suppose
Suffice to say, though, if you're interested in playing a mute character, or a character that speaks in some alternate way, the first thing I'd suggest is to discuss it with your DM.
Let them know it's something that's important to you, and that you want to work together to find a solution.
Yeah, Since the exact sounds aren’t specified, it seems like thri-kreen can use verbal components unless otherwise stated
Of course, was just wondering if I could point to something wotc related to make that discussion easier.
This does clear up most of the confusion as well, thanks
One player might describe their bard as singing their spells.
A wizard with Lantin-eque incantations.
A warlock whose verbal components are accompanied by ominous whispers from an unknown source.
They could all be casting the exact same spell using different sounds, and they'd all be successful.
All that matters rules-wise is that they've made a sound, and when they can't make a sound, they can't cast their spell.
And as a side note, if you wanted to make your character a reflection of your mute-ness, you could still just pick any other races option! As long as your DM is cool with it, anyone could be mute for any number of reasons!
I am very apologize for posting this in 2 other channels already I keep ending up in the wrong place 😭 this is the last repost i swear
Im a first time DM. Before this, I've played a few games run by experienced DMs, and under those circumstances it's alright to know next to nothing about D&D, as the mechanics of player action can be very simple to understand or have explained, and the DM is always there to tell you where the button is to role a specific stat or save, and how things work (I'm using roll20 as we all live in different places and can't meet physically to play). I have the story, where encounters will take place, one-off quests and overarching questlines all complete enough to run a session zero, but I'm worried that I don't know the mechanics of D&D well enough to understand how to set up encounters (attacks, stats, monsters, ect), handle player leveling, loot, rewards, ect. I also suffer chronic ADHD baby brain and not even jangling a set of keys in front of me would make it possible for me to read and absorb every handbook. What sections of the handbooks are the most important for understanding the mechanics of the game itself from the perspective of a DM, and what other resources might be useful to me?
Chapters 7-10 of the Basic Rules are more useful to the DM than the character creation stuff (though ideally you should be familiar with the process and the associated numbers). Critical Role's Handbooker Helper videos and WASD20's Rules School on YouTube will maybe be useful to check out as well.
There are tons of handy resources for DMs, but it really depends on what specifically you're in search of.
You could also run a pre-written adventure to save yourself the headache of designing encounters, calculating loot, and so on.
Yeah I probably should've done that so starting is easier but I've kind of committed myself to the bit at this point. In fairness the aspect of world building and writing important NPCs has been some of the most fun creatively I've had in a while
also thank u for the advice I'll be sure to check all of this out
You can also mine pre-written material of appropriate levels for stuff like encounters and loot.
that's smart actually
The mechanical design of the game is a part I struggle with myself, but here's the thing: you do not need to do it well to have fun playing D&D. Odds are good you'll screw up. That's actually okay. Learn from those mistakes, whether that means making things harder/easier, listening more to your players, or rescinding previous decisions ("Actually, the item I gave you is too strong and it's causing a problem. Would it be okay if it comes into play later on?").
Alright, ty!
When things go askew, talk to your fellow players. Sometimes many minds working on the same problem will be able to solve it in ways that one going at it solo never could.
I'm a veteran DM and I make mistakes on rules/rulings. I admit my mistake, learn from it, and if need be I'll retcon. The game goes on.

Hello,
I am a young and new player to D&D, I already started my own campaign and played around 3 times now. I find it very difficult to find people my age or people who are interested in playing with me (because I am to young to join most servers) I really wanna meet more people that like Dungeons and Dragons and I really wanna become better in Dungeons and Dragons, does anyone have any tips?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
@pastel vigil that should help
Have you also check out your local library, school, and game shops for youth focused dnd?
Yes, I live in a small city so theres not alot of Dungeons and Dragons stuff around here, but my school is starting something Dungeons and Dragons themed soon
Thank you for all the help already!
Hi, I'm trying to create a dnd group, none of us have ANY idea what we're doing, and we need a dm. Desperate times.
Check the #looking-for-players channel - this is DMs and groups looking for players. Read #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels (and other useful tips to finding a D&D game/group).
If you are looking for a DM, you can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to use the server bot, which will let you make a post in #750812887697588356 to advertise yourself. Or, you can read through the posts in #looking-for-players and use the reply thread under any that interest you
Hi, I’m currently creating a new character on dndbeyond, Druid specifically. On the “optional features manager” it says I have nothing available amd it suggests to unlock “all official options” in the marketplace. I own the players handbook so it can’t be that.
Does anyone know how to unlock these optional features?
Optional class features are published in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
I’m no DM but have some experience playing (still new myself only been playing since October) if you need another member let me know
I think on it!! Thank ya!
Welcome
You will want between 4 to 6 players really plus the DM
Yup!
im also new and im wondering where exactly you can get all the class details plus race if included?

Hey, I’m just curious but am I able to play as a shark folk, I saw one and thought that they looked cool😁
so confused on making a character sheet
There are no official "sharkfolk" playable race.
What are you having confusion with?
Iv never played dnd before I was wondering where do I play it as iv always been interested in it
Ok got it thank you👍🏼
Proficiency is a fixed number. It is the same for everyone, depending on level
It is a yes or no question:
Are you proficient in (insert skill, weapon, etc)? If so, add proficiency bonus
you can play in a group of 3+ people (including you) either in person or online. both options are functionally the same, but online is typically easier to find a group to play in as you're not limited by distance. if you are playing digitally, the most common way is through the discord voice chat and the roll20.net website.
the official ruleset is here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules . it looks like a lot but you only need like half of it as a player. I would also like to mention that there's more race and subclass options than what dndbeyond offers you, but I cant link it here.
+2 from lvs 1-4
+3 from lvs 5-9
+4 fron 9-12
Etc, follow the chart on any class description, theyre gonna say the same
?tag new skills
Skills
A skill represents a specific aspect of an ability score. Proficiency in a skill lets you add your proficiency bonus to ability checks that involve that skill, making you more likely to succeed.
- Strength. Athletics
- Dexterity. Acrobatics, Sleight of Hand, Stealth
- Constitution. (none)
- Intelligence. Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, Religion
- Wisdom. Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, Survival
- Charisma. Deception, Intimidation, Performance, Persuasion
Write your ability modifier next to each skill for that ability. If you’re proficient with that skill, add your proficiency bonus as well.
?tag new proficiency
Proficiencies
Your proficiencies define many of the things your character can do particularly well, from using certain weapons to telling a convincing lie.
The table that appears in your class description shows your proficiency bonus, which is +2 for a 1st-level character. Proficiency with weapons, skills, tools, and saving throws let you add your proficiency bonus to applicable rolls, making you more likely to succeed. Spellcasters add their proficiency bonus to their spell attack modifier and spell save DC as well.
Your character also needs to be proficient with armor and shields to wear and use them effectively. There are drawbacks to wearing armor or carrying a shield if you lack the required proficiency.

Is there a way to make my bard a assassin bard build? Or do I have to multi class into a rogue build?
Is there a subclass that can make it assassin like?
Currently Lvl 6 Half-Elf
Sounds like a good question for #character-discussion (this channel is more for getting started with core rules and mechanics - trying to get a specific character build is more fitting for #character-discussion)
Ty
What is some reasons I should pick certain barbarian paths
which one fits your character idea best, which one seems strongest, which one has features you like the most, etc
Is anyone else a wizard?
Sometimes
i imagine lots of people here have played wizards
Do you have a wizard question?
Yea
Shoot
Okay, so I have a simple question does a multi-classed barbarian that’s also a Druid have rage?
Why wouldn't you?
Man I don’t know, that’s why I’m asking
When you multiclass, you get the abilities for whatever levels you have in each class
Sick
There are benefits as well as costs so…should be avoided by new players
It is a tool to achieve a goal

Okay hey, this might take a bit of explaining but one of my players is a lore bard with you know everything the usual with vicious mockery now he hasn’t used it before but just a few minutes ago he rolled a history check for the end villain and and got a 18 and the end cillain had some trama, than he used vicious mockery. Tell me exactly how that works, would I give the end villain disadvantage plus something else? I’m not too sure
Are you asking about how Vicious Mockery works?

Hey it asking me what class i want butt not really familiar with them i want a sword men who can u some magic is their a class like that
Fighter can attain the Eldritch Knight subclass, or you can use Paladin or Ranger.
Eldritch Knight fighter
Arcane Trickster Rogue
Paladin
Ranger
Bladesinger Wizard
Valor Bard
Swords Bard
Battlesmith Artificer
These are the options i can think of right now. Not all of the are from the players handbook, just fyi
Can i put custom weaknesses and strengths in my character background or is that not allowed
You can put in custom stuff instead of using the table options from the premade backgrounds
If you want them to have any kind of mechanical effect, you'd need to
You can do a character for now, just be prepared to adjust things once you get a DM, so the character can fit into the world etc
Ok 👍
What’s going on here
Hi I am new I have no idea how to play but it always seemed fun

Just got done finishing my avatar
Bro i just spent a hour writing a character description and background just not to save i

Im sorry for your loss
That's so sad! :(
Draft in Notepad, copy and paste to webapps. Take five, drink water. The next version will be better.
Also google docs is free and auto saves if you lose power or something else happens, its also got a really nice voice to text feature.
Bro i wrote a master piece and now its gone
The next one will be better
Hey ur a Dm right if putt custom weakss and straths in my description would u allow that as dm or no i asked this before butt wasn't given a clear answer
What is it specifically?
if they are personality traits then it is roleplay only and probably easier to do
If you want to invent mechanical effects beyond what your race/class include you’ll have a tougher time
Gonna try out a sesh for the first time ever in a week or so with wife and BiL.
I'll be DMing, since they cba with looking too much stuff up before.
I mean, i hope they'll at least pick a class that sounds cool and read through the stats themselves.
But I mean... What in the world do I do?
How much am I expected to carry this?
Got no laptop atm. Got a small whiteboard though.
Is it super recommended with a DM screen at first sesh?
Like i wanted to put something like my character has affinity for fire but he's very vulnerable to cold/frost would something like that be ok
DMing IRL or online?
irl
Good luck
I'd stay away from that unless you know the DM well.
Alright no problem man you got this, what did you want them to play? Have an idea for a game in mind?
Ok
That's a super cool idea, it just might be a little too difficult to implement without causing problems with the game
You can ask the DM when you start though, like hey DM, could I have elemental adept fire in exchange for being vulnerable to cold damage? Personally I would say yes, but its up to them.
^^ Definitely talk to the DM, it's worth a conversation at least if it's something that you are really set on
Problem with that is i don't have or know any DMs im just barely creating my character
No idea whatsoever.
Gotta have to discuss a general theme theyd like to do first, and BiL comes back home in a week, so I got some prep time to look up rules and stuff at least.
Then,
LETS
GET
COOKIN!
I appreciate the advice tho
Best of luck mate
I would strongly suggest using a premade adventure to significantly cut down on the work
You think they're going want something more like lord of the rings, or more like monty python?
There should be a free one on DnD beyond
Alternatively there are short campaign/modules available on DMs Guild
As you don’t have a DM don’t get too attached to everything you put into a character. Coming up with concepts go for it, practice making them but when you find a game the DM may not allow certain things so you would have to alter to fit the game
Hey is anyone around to help me with my character sheet, just need help rebalancing some points
Link it in #character-discussion
Hopefully more Monty pythonesque, waiting for answers on the theme wishes

Hey and welcome 🙂 you can find a lot of good links with this bot post
the make a first charakter as some kind of prcatice with someone that knows the rules might help get into all you need to know
Start with the free basic rules (don't have to memorize it but getting use to the terminology and learning how to create a character would be a good idea), watch folks playing D&D via Twitch/YouTube, try making a character sheet or two, then find a group and start playing (and continue learning the rules of the game).
than all you need is a game to just start ^^ most of the rules and ropes can be learned while playing
Want to hear a crazy concept? I’m a traveler from the future. Have you ever heard of Dungeons and Dragons Football?
Feel free to ask any specific questions you have here or in one of the appropriate channels (see id:browse)
Is there a source where I could by lets say a physically player handbook but also be able to redeem it digitally?
So I have one for in person games and also one to reference in online games using search functions etc?
awesome thanks
and are these digital formats like a .pdf you download or is it tied to their platform like roll20?
tied to the plattform dndbeyond
but you can get the sole rules to play for free as a pdf on their side as al legal download
and digital https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
SRD is hard to read
https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf this is the basic rules PDF
Thanks ^^ I haven't found the page
Hmm, if I as a new dm (with other completely fresh players aswell) only got time to read through a single book, which one would be optimal?
Basic rules, players handbook or dungeon masters guide?
Or would it be very recommended to skim at least two of them for a first sesh?
you only need the basic rules
Players handbook
Getting conflicting vibes here :p
the player's handbook will give you more options for the characters and stuff about how to run the game as a dm and about the default setting of the forgotten realms
you don't need to read the whole player's handbook before starting to play but it's the better option to have at hand 😉
the dungeon masters guide is only needed if you want more options, infos and magic items but it hasn't the core rules within it
I see.
But simplest to start out would be reading though basic rules as well as I can manage, but keep both that and players handbook as reference at hand for when needed?
basically, a read through to get the basic gist of things, and to know where to look things up
so that you know there's rules for fall damage, mounted combat, knocking creatures out, etc - and where to find those rules, even if you've not got them memorized to a T
mhm
some of the best advice I can think of
You don't need to be the rulebooks, you only need to have an idea that a relevant rule exists and be able to find it
And then the DM can make a judgement call on whether to use it or not, or improvise alterations, or whatever - but it's always better to know the basekit and know what you're doing different, than winging it having assumed everything.
When starting a campaign, how do we play it?
At its base, all you need to play DND is communication and trust.
So, many online groups simply use a voice call in the stead of meeting in person at a table in real life. Then they often use a digital medium for character sheets, dice rolling, and a virtual tabletop.
Alright
A DNDBeyond campaign is simply something for the DM to collect the character sheets together with, being able to look at them, perhaps even secretly edit, be able to use with the encounter building and combat tracking tools, and even use with the maps tool.
For the campaign, for our characters’ voices, can we use a voice changer, or is that not allowed?
Ask your table
How do you join a game?
#find-a-game 🙂 you find all explanation in this channel
there's no singular 'the campaign', this isn't the server for the rules of a table you're at
It'll be up to your DM and fellow players whether or not to allow things like that

☝️have a read of the basic rules any questions and the nerd collective will descend to assist in any way we can
This is a good crash course (but you will need to read the Basic Rules): https://howtogm.guide
The guide includes a specific adventure, but you can apply the framework to any adventure you plan to run.
any recommended product that servers as a "slipcase" for character sheets that my players can write on/erase easily?
Honestly, just go to a stationary store like Staples and get a blank character sheet laminated
Yeah either laminate it or the paper protector sleeves and let them use dry erase or something
Probably a dumb question, but in dnd beyond my friends have a larger selection of customization (for example, artificer class, and alchemist sub class and fairy race), meanwhile I’m more limited, heck I only have on option for subclass in my first class of rogue, that being thief.
Is there something I’m missing or dlc I need to buy for the app to have more options?
For example, I really wanna play an oath of redemption Paladin next but my only option is devotion
You either need to own the individual playable races/classes (or the digital book they're from) or someone in your campaign shares their digital content (that is only if someone in your campaign has the Master Tier subscription).
With a free account you only have the basic rules options, which are one subclass per class and only 7 of the backgrounds.
The free account is limited to what's in the free Basic Rules, the SRD, and the Elemental Evil Player's Companion.
On D&D Beyond, only the content in the Basic Rules are available for free. That includes 12 of the 13 classes, with 1 subclass for each, and 9 races. To unlock more, you'll need to purchase additional rule books such as The Player's Handbook or Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (or purchase the options within those books individually) or have them shared with you through D&D Beyond's Content Sharing methods, or recreate that content for your own use via D&D Beyond's homebrew tools
Ok, thanks for the help yall, at least for the oath of redemption Paladin, what book should I look for, and how much does it go for on the market in the app
You can buy individual subclasses, races for 1.99
You need to use the webpage marketplace not the app
Redemption is in xanathars
Hi all. I’m a longtime dnd video game fan but have never had a group to play dnd with. Thinking I should finally give the discord a shot to find a group but would first like to try DMing a short, light, and family-friendly campaign for my very much not-a-nerd wife and my enthusiastic 6 year old daughter. Any helpful resources for DMing with younger folks?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
They had a kids friendly easy oneshot adventure for free in december
there is a new starter set Dragons of stormwrek isle that is a nice little adventure and can be played as a first little campaign with the whole family
I looked at the subclasses itnroduced in xanthars and it looks like it has some other cool subclasses like samurai, celestial warlock, and hex blade, I just might buy that book if I feel like my pockets are too heavy, thanks for the tip
here you can read into it for free: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/itsi/intro-to-stormwreck-isle but the whole adventure will comes with a price
Awesome, thank you PandaMaru!
I think it might work with the reduced char-stats like in the peril-adventure
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources there some other stuff here for young kids,
The school resources are good
I also have a very newcomer question. How does the Forgotten Realms campaign setting differ from the “core” or “default” dnd campaign setting? If dnd even has a default setting? Growing up I always assumed it had one and Forgotten Realms was a side thing, but looking into FR recently I see that basically all the most popular dnd video games—and the recent movie—are all set in the FR setting.
FR is so to speak the actual "default" setting for the most 5E specific content from wotc
Was it always that way or did FR kind of officially merge with dnd at some point
but there are others like Ravenloft, Spelljammer, Radiant Citadel and a lot more
🤔 I'm not sure but I think I have read that the first every dnd setting was greyhawk?
This is more #dnd-discussion territory rather than newcomer material
This channel is more for getting help with the basics of D&D, for discussing it's history, that's more of a general D&D topic

so i am really interested in dnd but i have no idea where to start or how everything works i dont have any friends that are interested in playing and i was wondering if someone could help me just to get known to the game all in all
The above links can really help you out!
You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Worth trying to make a practice PC while looking for a game, as that's something you can try by yourself (although best to make a new PC specifically for a game as to follow the DM's rules)
there is so many and generally so much stuff on youtube and around all plattforms i just dont know where to start yk?

so basically i have a character before i join the game right? one that i rolled my stats and everything for?
You can make a practice PC or come up with ideas before a game, but best to make a PC specifically for that game.
You can't roll stats without a DM to verify them.
ah i see
For practice PCs, best to use standard array or point buy (these are covered in the basic rules).
It's just a suggestion to play about with making a PC as a way to learn some rules before finding a game.
But DMs might have houserules (Like how to generate stats, or what races/ classes are allowed, or changes to some rules that affect characters), or different tones or styles for a game. You can always look out for games that suit your interest. Like you might make a very different PC for a campaign about adventuring into the underdark below ground, than you would for a game about being pirates exploring different islands and such.
Using the basic rules to make a practice PC though, you probably could use that PC in many games, or just with a few adjustments.
Having a character ready before a game only works if the character is for Adventure League DnD games. Though you don’t roll stats.
Oh okay okay
#adventurers-league is where you can get more info on Adventure League
Thank you :’)

Welcome!
Hello,im new at D&D
Welcome, welcome!
There's some helpful starter links a few messages up to get you going, but did you have any specific questions?
You find some people that want to play with you, and schedule a time to do so
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).

Okay folks - per server rules do not solicit or try and organize games inside our discussion channels - we have Looking For Game channels for that and as a community member already noted, read #find-a-game to learn more about how to find a game and how to use those Looking For Game channels. Thanks!
Dose anyone know we're to find noob friendly games I could join
Check #find-a-game
Sorry to ask but if I wanted to send a looking for player thread will send it to the bot or is there another way
The instructions and the prompt are in #find-a-game
Ok thanks
what are the books that provide new stuff for character creation on dnd beyond? not a big fan of virtual reading so would prefer to only buy digital copies of books that provide new classes/races/etc to charachter sheets
You can buy individual playable races/classes/feats for about $1.99 each but you can also get bundles from each of those books for about $9.99.
do you have a link for that?
Go to D&D Beyond's Marketplace (the website and not the app) and click on each book you're interested in. It'll open up to individual purchases.

Is heading magic holy magic or are they different
What's "heading magic"? What are you referring to?
healing
There is no "healing" magic per se. There are different types of magic, such as arcane and divine.
The rules don’t really declare spells as holy or unholy, but your game setting might.
If you want to know more about the schools of magic (such as illusion, evocation, and enchantment) then head on over to #dnd-discussion but that's not something you need to know as a new player.
Even the different schools don’t really have rules of their own.
But other features may apply based on those schools.
I wanna find a group to play with so bad. I never played before I just really want to use Arto.
never played before. experience with bg3 and watched some people play online looking for a one shot to get me started
i played once with my friends and it was really exciting :3 id like 2 learn more so i can participate better next time ^_^
just played my first time last weekend with another newcomer and an experienced DM. Eldritch Knight felt right for me. but i think i chose the wrong spells
Why do you think you chose the wrong spells?
It makes sense to say that for Wizards in particular. But would that really be the case for paladins since they are half casters?
i didnt think to choose any spells that buff haha. i chose chromatic orb 😅
as far as i have researched i probably should have chose Shield
i dont remember all 3 i chose. protection from good and evil, and chromatic orb. the other i dont recall. plus fireball and mage hand cantrips
Ah for some reason my mind went to Paladin. Probably because I've been watching Faraway Paladin today 😅
Keeping things on topic about the basics for new players. Which spellcasting classes would you recommend for people new to dnd?
I think Clerics and Artificers are a good pick.
Possibly ranger.
also i had a question about leveling the eldritch knight. it says my spells have to be from abjuration and evocation. when i level can i choose all my slots from abjuration, or do i have to take one from each?
artificers are way to complicated lol
13th
DM enterperated it as i should choose from each rather than stacking
At 1st level you learn three spells, two of which must each be from either Abjuration or Evocation.
Whenever you learn a new spell, it must be from either the Abjuration or Evocation schools.
The spells you learn at 8th, 14th, and 20th level can come from any school of magic.
But what do you mean "when you level can you choose all your slots from abjuration"
It's easier to think of spell slots as resource like MP. Spell slots represent how many times you can cast a spell of that level.
The school of magic isn't neccessarity related to your spell slots.
book says "abjuration (and) evocation" . so i wanted to know if i could choose two abjuration at lvl3 or if ihave to take an evocation too. the book using the word "and" instead of "or" makes it feel a tad vague.
"... two of which you must choose from the abjuration and evocation spells on the wizard spell list."
You don't have to take a spell from each school when you level
You just can't take spells from any other schools
From the list including Abjuration and Evocation, you pick two of those.
In short, any from this list as far as 1st level spells go
What level is your character at the moment?
We milestoned up to level 3 and halted the campaign immediately after choosing subclasses
Level 3
Following rules as written I made a level 3 eldritch knight.
If your DM would allow you to pick new spells I have some that should work well for you.
For Cantrips I was only able to pick 2. So I went with Booming Blade and Mage Hand.
I believe these cantrip spells are new player friendly.
As for the level 1 spells.
I'm thinking Absorb Elements, Find Familiar, and Shield would also be fairly new player friendly.
He said he’ll probably let me repick spells since we havent done anything since picking. But im not changing mage hand 😂😂😂. Im fantasizing about the antics i can get into with it
I keep getting carried away with thinking about the petty crimes i can commit with mage hand. DM said he would let me wield a dagger/one handed sword with mage hand for combat purposes
Awfully nice of them.
Pretty sure that isn't rules as written.
Would be good to be mindful of that and not give your DM too much of a headache lol.
Does your character have dark vision?
Just checked the spell and it does say "The hand can't attack, activate magic items, or carry more than 10 pounds."
As far as im aware (granted that isnt vary far lol) my character doesnt have access to see in the kind of lowlight spells he can cast. I watched a video and a guy mentioned that. MY ASSUMPTION is that it’s probably a spell that one would need something akin to true sight to see in
True
What would you recommend?
Ideally something new player friendly.
Well EK spells specifically,
How about the Sleep spell?
Am i allowed to post a picture of my stat sheet in here? Or is that spam?
I don't think you can post pictures in this server.
Though I do believe you can link the character sheet if you have it on dnd beyond.
I do have it on dndb. Im very new to discord and computers and such so ill try to figure it out
I can walk you through it.
First make sure the character sheet is set to public.
This can be set in the Home tab when you click on manage character in the character sheet.
Once a character sheet is made public, you will see a share button appear next to the short rest and long rest button on your dnd beyond character sheet.
That will show you a link that has a button where you can click to copy.
You can also just copy the link from your address bar.
lmk if this worked. should be a human EK with a greatsword
let me see 🧐
Link works 👍
And it's an EK with a greatsword.
Though that means your AC would be 16 instead of 18 if you're using a greatsword in combat.
my stats are wrong still i think. it should have been changed by now. but all of my stats are 1 point higher than they should be because i tranfered them incorrectly
Did you manually put in stats or did you use standard array or point buy?
I believe it's 1 point higher because you picked human and everything gets +1 bonus as a human.
did you mean to pick variant human?
heh. i had a piece of paper stat sheet and i filled it in with all the inhearent +1 added into my stats. so when i transcribed them into DnDB it added the +1 again. that one is just cuz im new to this and kinda stupid lol
essentially all my stats are reading +2 to everything i initially rolled on accident
oh wait. maybe they are reading right now
what do you mean?
i think i mean im just dumb and having a hard time keeping track of all the modifiers
my dm went in and edited them. and i think theyre right now
Yeah, DDB will automatically add the bonus from your race.
So if you’re manually entering your stats, you’ll want to enter them without that bonus.
okay. yeah so then its right, now
DM said it was 18 still because i have a shield (on my back obvi), but i think in combat he was keeping track of the 16.... i think
Yeah, rules as written I believe you only only gain the benefit when it is being held by hand.
i get the feeling our DM is a tad unorthodox and is willing to bend/augment some aspects of the game for us new players. but thats just me speaking for him, so take that with a grain of salt.
I'm curious if the DM is also new to dnd or is simply doesn't mind bending the rules to benefit players.
tbh him letting me use a dagger in my mage hand kinda just follows "the rule of cool"
hes deffffffff not new. i think hes been playing since 3E or something
I will note that as a new player, please take what the DM is doing as an exception and not an expectation.
Even with rule of cool.

The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

A Community campaign is something like D&D Adventurers league.
for example, when we were discussing letting me use the daggar he said dagger yes but shield no. because its just a hand not a hand and forearm, and a sheild has a forearm strap.
Being very new at this, unfortunately, that doesn't explain much.
Short version:
It's a similar to an MMO playstyle. In which a DM will host a one shot adventure, a single dnd session that is roughly 2-4 hours, where you can play your character.
Then the rewards your character gained from that adventure, they get to keep and bring with them to another one shot hosted by a different DM. Which typically involves you playing with different players as well.
There are certain guidelines that you must follow when it comes to creating your character and which games you can use your character.
Happy to help. If you want more info on Adventurers League, feel free to ask in #adventurers-league .
I'd say it is very new player friendly and benefit you greatly in a search to find a home campaign.
Sounds like a pretty cool DM.
How is the attack with the mage hand handled mechanically?
deff a cool guy. been his friend/coworker for well over a year now. i think he'll do a good job. but ive never done this before so im not really one to say. its all about having fun and im for sure having fun so that counts for something.
Well keeping things within of helping dnd newcomers, feel free to ask any questions.
well we didnt take another step after leveling up so i havent seen yet. im assuming whenever im elligable for my bonus action to be like a bonus attack/bonus weapon attack
correct me if im wrong here but; after a certain level i gain access to having a bonus weapon attack after usuing my action to cast a spell.... right? if so, then mage hand could be used for an atk when ive created space to cast a spell
Let me check. Eldritch Knights isn't exactly my forte.
Pretty sure the wizard blade singers can do a melee and spell attack on the same turn after they reach a certain level.
Eldritch Knights do get the ability to make a bonus action attack after casting a spell as an action
It starts as after a cantrip only, and eventually becomes after a leveled spell, iirc
The Bladesinger version is mechanically better, but
Yep just looked it up at Level 7:
War Magic
Beginning at 7th level, when you use your action to cast a cantrip, you can make one weapon attack as a bonus action.
Casting Mage Hand would qualify as a cantrip for the trigger, but anything involving attacking with it would probably have to be an
. Since that's not part of the normal rules
wait where can i find the explaination for what "blade singer" and and stuff means? cuz that phrase is entirely new to me. i have a player handbook next to me rn
Blade Singer is a Wizard subclass.
Yep, would recommend taking the time to talk with your DM on ground rules to avoid potential misunderstanding on what is and isn't possible.
It's not in the player's handbook. But I wouldn't worry about the supplemental options right now
The PHB will serve you fine to start
Wether you're a new or seasoned player. Asking your DM clarifying questions will always be helpful.
yea me and dm talked. as long as we can make it reasonable he'll allow an attack with the mage hand if i can play it right. hence why it says mage hand can hold 10lbs and a sword is only 3lbs but im allowed a dagger because its a little more believable. its not like im relying on it as a playstyle like im trying to be darth kreya with floating blades lol its more of a tricky trick to try and see how it goes
Nothing wrong with that. It just means we can't really tell you how the normal mechanics will interact with that
Because it's all just however your DM decides it works
Though, do note that once the mage hand is out, doing something with it wouldn't count as casting the spell to trigger your bonus action attack as an EK. But you might be able to cast it and then attack with it on the same turn
How . Exactly would I go ahead and find a campaign..

Is there any android app for character sheets and other tools that perhaps allows for some syncing between the devices of the players of the DM to some extent?
D&D Beyond.
Hi, if someone is a second level player, what level bard would they be?
It depends what levels they chose in bard.
What do you mean?
they're 2nd level
they could have taken 0, 1, or 2 levels in bard
there's character level (like what proficiency bonus cares about) and there's class level (which can become mismatched with others and with character level)
without multiclassing and if they originally chose bard, a 2nd level character is a 2nd level bard
Is prestidigitation a good newcomer spell as wel?
theres not many spells that are particularly harder than others for a newcomer to use
if you're creative, presti will work well. if you aren't, less so
can it be used for multiple effects at higher levels or is it just one?
read the spell description
there's no "at higher levels" section
exactly
?
That means it doesn't have different effects at higher levels
Also, cantrips can't be upcast at all (they just scale with character level, if they scale at all)
crap
well some cantrips autoscale with level
True.
Though that would also be listed in the spell, as you said
Most utility cantrips don't scale
Only the damage ones
cantrips that scale, automatically scale with total character level
spells only scale if they say they do stuff when cast using a higher level spell slot, and thus only when cast as such
otherwise the only other native scaling is just, it counting as that higher level, such as versus counterspell
I'm an elvish rogue, so i probably shouldn't even rely on spells. It's just that my character's bio is that she grew up and grew out of the structure of religion and more has more agnostic views. She's become somewhat self-sufficient, and her entire character arc is to exact revenge on people that wrong her in whatever way possible, so my initial thought was to make her as self-sustaining as possible, but i'm a newbie so that might just be me.
Nothing about that would stop you from taking prestidigitation
The spell still has utility, it just doesn't scale
having presti doesnt mean you should rely on spells
its a single cantrip with nearly no in combat use
it does have a lot of quality of life
always clean clothes for example, flavor your hunted meat to taste nicer, etc
yeah
If you're a rogue, then you'll mostly be using weapons in combat anyway
my thought process with it on face value was *SMOKESCREEN, SMOKESCREEN, SMOKESCREEN!!!" but then i read it not upscaling-
but if you go for melee, specifically having taken the Booming Blade or Green-Flame Blade cantrips, basically a direct upgrade to mundane melee as a rogue. Specifically booming blade
also you wouldn't get smoke screens outside of Fog Cloud or perhaps Silent Image
might switch that then
those two are proper 'levelled spells' so you'd need to be an arcane trickster or otherwise multiclass to access them, or perhaps find a magic item
or steal one, or make one, or commission a wizard to make one... etc
how do i change my spell from Presti in roll20
There should be a little lock icon that you can click that lets you delete it. Then you can drag and drop the new spell
