I have this planned adventure where the players can either fight in a war between humans and faeryfolk, or negotiate a peaceful resolution via talking to the people in charge of the faeryfolk
Archfey would be my first shout. Here: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Archfey
Oh thanks :D
Sorry but Wdym with a rule?
If there's a question or dispute over how a rule works.
I'm a bit confused though, can I use 2e characters in my 5e campaign?
Not mechanically, but you could try and convert them. #dnd-elder-editions can give tips on that
Oh alright, thanks :>
And also depends on what you mean here as well. If you mean 'One of these archefey seems to be from 2e, could I use them in a 5e game?' then the answer will end up being 'Probably, but check with your DM on that'.
What level is the party in this adventure?
They're still at Level 3, why?
There's allot going on 😵💫
In that case I wouldn't worry about trying to stat them up in 5e. They're way above the party and any negotiations will be civil, or terminal.
A suggestion, if you want it: to avoid war the party must gather three "things" (agreements, evidence of malfeasance, tribute?) and end by presenting them in fae court.
That's
An interesting point, though, I am the DM, though
Great input
We're certainly getting a bit too deep into #dm-discussion territory here, I think.
Sorry, I'm new to this entire thing, forgive me if I accidentally caused a ruckus :'D
Nah, no worries- always hard to judge how complicated a question might end up being when you first start out. Looks like #dm-discussion might be a better help for digging into how to run this idea of yours, and the questions you'll have.
Are there any tips I should know for someone new.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
The basic rules are a great place to start but do not feel like you need to read and memorise all of them before ever finding a game. Just having a general idea of how the game works can be enough. Maybe have a go at making a practice PC (player character) while finding a game as that's something you can do by yourself (and with help from here!).
I think I might struggle with dnd because I'm a shy person And take. Bit to warm up to others
Finding a game may be the big first challenge. We have 'Looking-for' channels here to look for online games, but you can also look for online games in other places (like reddit r/lfg or the Dnd reddits, or on certain platforms that host D&D/table top games like roll20). Or you can go for an in person game- check out local game stores (LGS) or libraries, or facebook and meetup for local groups. Or kidnap some friends for a oneshot, see how they like it.
There are newbie friendly games out there. You could also try looking for smaller groups running oneshots (games that are designed to only last one session or so (so maybe 3-6ish hours of gameplay)), or check out Adventure League (official organised play- so long as your character is made by AL rules, you should be able to join a game appropriate to the characters level) and look for smaller groups. These are options that have less commitment, so that if you don't vibe with a group, it's okay to drop out after a game- and also means they're great ways of meeting new people you do vibe with.
I'll look into it more thank you for you're help. 🙂

?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.

I'm a newbie and I'm confused about what forgotten realms is exactly. Is it a continent? Planet? universe? multiverse?
It's a setting. So "universe" might be the closest comparison
Are there other realms?
There are, yep! So some settings might be Eberron, or Forgotten Realms, or Ravenloft, or even magic the gathering based realms like Theros or Ravinica.
Think of it like the setting or theme of the game you play in. Like playing in Narnia instead of Middle Earth from Lord of the Rings.
Same game, but different lore and locations.
Most 5e modules and books tend towards being for Forgotten Realms.
If you play in a 'meta' type setting like Planescape or Spelljammer you can even travel between settings. Travel from Forgotten Realms into Eberron or such.
Your DM might not even use any of those and just make their own.
universe
Blackmoor, Greyhawk, Mystara, Ravenloft, Pelinore, Dragonlance, Lankhmar, Spelljammer, Hollow World, Dark Sun, Al-Qadim, Thunder Rift and many more
Honestly im just here to have fun lmao i played a bit o' baldurs gate 3 at my cousins house with him
just a probably stupid little question, when making any check of any kind, as a DM, how do you know when it results in succes or failure?
I know what the DC is. Reasonably straightforward but a chance to fluff it, get 10 or better. Challenging, give me a 20. Anything in between is in between.
so they're different locations from thr FR?
right, so mostly what seems more reasonable? xd
Different universes
It's really that simple. At higher levels you might want to include 25 or even 30, but yeah, basically like I said.
hello
yes
Hello!
hi
The Basic Rules give you this chart: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#TypicalDifficultyClasses
I tend to not ask for rolls for anything below 10. If you read other adventures, you'll get a better sense of where checks fall at certain levels. For instance, rolling a 13 at level 1 is very different from doing so at level 17, when bonuses are notably higher. In any case, the chart is a handy baseline.
right, thanks for the help :)
I dmed ya
There’s a helpful chart here for when you need to decide your own DC.

I created my first actual character on DnD beyond. While I have created characters in the past, I rushed through them. This time though, I had fun
Hey question, how the hell does multi-classes work??
It's quite literally taking two classes at once. If you're a level 1 fighter and you meet the stat requirements, you can choose to gain 1 level of wizard instead of becoming a level 2 fighter when you level up (for example)
That being said, multiclassing isn't recommended for new players. It can be considerably more complicated, and it's very easy to make combinations that make your character feel very weak to play
Okay a got another question, I have one friend that’s really experienced with dnd, I’m the dm and they wanna be a gnome with a multi class of a Druid and a barbarian, so I did some research and they would have a advantage roll on charisma, wisdom, strength and a con saving throw. But this isn’t abt all that, wtf does the gnome add to that???
Gnome Cunning
You have advantage on all Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws against magic.
they only have proficiency in 2 saving throws cause multiclassing doesnt give you additional save proficiencies from your class
Well, he has damn near advantage on every roll
they have advantage on some saving throws against magic, and they would be proficient in 2 saving throws, depending on what their first level class choice is. First level in Druid: Wisdom and INT saves. first level in Barb, STR and CON saves
Thanks, they are NOT using that character :3
I think you and/or him are not reading the rules correctly here
I think it might be me
Proficiency in a saving throw simply means they add their proficiency bonus to the total.
Advantage in a saving throw means they roll the die twice and use the higher result.
and while gnome cunning is certainly powerful, its nothing gamebreaking.
And note that if they’re multiclassing, they only get some of the proficiencies from their additional classes, none of which include saving throws.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Proficiencies
has the player talked to you about their plans for their barbarian/druid? because usually, this combo is not strong at all, except for a very specific combo at a handful of levels. (Moon Druid/barbarian)
and being a gnome or not has very little influence on that combo
So if they start as a barbarian, they’d have proficiency in STR and CON saves. If they start as a druid, they’d have INT and WIS instead.
They won’t have all four.
Uhh yea, I can’t fully remember but he said he will mostly focus on the Druid with bear, and just have barbarian with rage and will level that up so they don’t take as much physical damage
A barbarian also can’t cast spells (or concentrate on them) while they rage, which is a sorcerer’s whole shtick. Misread
they are druid, not sorc
Ahhh, my bad. 😅
its the infamous bearbarian build as far as I can tell
Yea I believe it sucks
which falls apart promptly but oh well
soo, their character will be incredibly hard to kill for a few levels, but thats about it. fantasic defenses, but meh offenses. You can decide if that is a problem for you. if yes, then talk to the player
moon druid and barbarian?
yes
It's certainly nothing crazy
you'll outshine everyone until level 5 in terms of damage and hp
I can see how it might be a problem at level 3-4
it's crazy until level 5 and than it gets progressively worse
yeah it is somewhat popular for kicks but not gamebreaking except at low levels, as Moon Druid is broken in tier1
Cause this isn’t a one shot game this is our full game, sooooo imma have to think, thanks everyone!
yes it's broken for the most played levels of the game
its not unworkable for a DM but it does require thought
you are better than everyone in terms of hp and damage

Time to start my pretend shift of helping newcomers with their questions cause I don't know quite enough to go anywhere else
Cheers, heading to create a character now
Have fun and feel free to ask any questions if you have them!
Great
Any help is great
I'll probably learn like all the rules at some point but right now my knowledge is not encyclopedic.
Honestly, answering questions is a good way to learn.
same
How do I go about finding a group?
Was just about to ask that myself
Brain still confused about DnD
Handbook Helpter is how I personally learned the basics, it's listed above.
Just watching a lot of DND content will teach you a lot.
Did you have any specific questions?
I got a question real quick
When it comes to the looking for players channel do I just send a DM asking if they'd be willing to have a first timer in their session?
Yep
or respond in the thread yes
Or each post has a thread you can use.
If you do want to give them a heads up go ahead, most DMs are happy to teach though.
most people are chilla bout newcomer yes
Alright I'll give that a go then, much appreciated guys! I'll let you's know if I find a session
Hey I've been playing a lotr based campaign playing as a cleric-dwarf, with a fairly good backstory I'd like to share with the players; the problem is that the other players, or just the campaign in general, seems to be very gameplay-oriented, and I havent been able to roleplay as much as I'd like. I understand it's the players decisions on wether or not they want to roleplay, and I'm not trying to force him to, but there simply isnt a single time so far in the campaign where I could roleplay. I asked the DM about this, but I dont really think he gets the memo.
Makes me kinda sad bc I've been working on my backstory and character personality for a while
Not all games have the same playstyle, you may need to look at a different group with more roleplay focus.
Exactly what I was gonna say.
Hi, I'm extremely new and was wondering if someone would be able to help me out. I'm having difficulty trying to set up my character or find games. If this isn't the right discussion for this, sorry!
I believe character difficulties should be asked in #character-discussion and you can find a game in #find-a-game
Emphasis on the I believe part
Okay! Thank you! I was having a hard time finding where to put certain things and saw the newcomers chat
I definitely see what you mean, these players are some of my really good friends though so I dont want to just leave them; I'm definitely on the lookout for other campaigns tho
Can always be in more than one campaign 🙂
That works too.

Hello
hi
I was curious if someone a bit more experianced with character creation could take a look at one of my characters stats and such. I couldn't use D&D B cause It didn't have the race I wanted
I had to write everything manually on a google doc
So some stuff might be wrong

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
ok, i created my character already though
But you don't know how to play the game or its rules.
If you go into a game without knowing how your character works, how combat runs, etc. then it means the DM has to constantly pause the game to teach you the fundamentals. Be kinda to the DM by learning the stuff first.
Besides, the DM may want you to create a new character because the one you created doesn't fit their campaign setting.
Sorry, what's the command to send this again?

Hello 👋
Hey Im new to this, I already did the intro demo and skimmed through the basic rules. I want to play a game but I dont think I have much time to do so. I dont want to hold back any groups if it means I cant join them for the whole time. Should I attempt to play it solo to figure out the swing of things or is it better to learn while playing with others?
I know at least on the DM side people will recommend the player and DM to do a one-on-one sort of thing so that the player can get in-game experience. You could try asking your DM for something like that.
You could look at trying a few one-shots to begin with.
I've never done anything like that though so I wouldn't exactly know how you'd do it.
Games that last only a single session.
A quick question to the resident DMs: how do y'all feel about stat buy and the standard array of stats from the PHB? As a player, I like having the control in making my stats those ways, even if it means I might be missing out on a little bit of extra stats.
Sorry, read that wrong.
Oh, I'm not a DM, I just wanted to get an opinion. My first ever DnD session was recently and the new DM had us generate stats in an extremely weird way, saying that point buy and the standard array were dumb because you got to choose everything
As a player I normally use standard array but that then arises a problem because everyone's stats are better than mine, but standard array is overall pretty fair.
When I first read through the PHB I thought standard array was really nice because it let you kinda build up and make a not busted character at lvl 1
All I ever use is point buy. So I guess I like it fine
People like to make strong characters, and normally "rolling" is the best way to do that.
Standard array can be achievedd through point buy so your not losing any points
There are no busted level 1 characters
well in my first session I had a party member that has 20 strength and all the encounters were balanced around him doing like 15 dpr
lvl 1
That is a DM issue
Min maxing is more of a problem for me too as everyone is like 14 and wants to be as powerful as humanly possible.
And that's why I have my players use Point Buy instead of rolling.
Rolling only works if everyone is prepared to accept the results
Mostly why I haven't played D&D in a while...
If I told you how he made us roll for stats and how much we argued with him about the method; no one was ready to accept the results
at best with point buy, you start 18 in your main stat which is good , but not gamebreaking
Point buy can't go as high as rolling but it also can't go as low, so it tends to be much more balanced
I wouldv'e thought balanced would be better for a first time party and DM
which we are
Yeah, I have all my players use point buy. Gives them flexibility to make the character they want, but keeps everyone on even footing.
thanks for y'alls input 🙂
That said, there are some wild variations out there, so I wouldn't be surprised by pretty much any method
I just made a sample character with point buy, I see the hype I'm just gonnna do this now.
There's a lot less uncertainty about it. You can just choose your stats and go :)
Instead of worrying about rolling
I just like to be in control of completely making the character that I will be playing as
another quick question, I'm not aware of the up-and-up of the community so, are there any strong opinions on variant humans?
Generally better than regular human mechanically
Whether people like them or not will vary by table but as far as I'm aware, they're fairly allowed
Very popular
so far it seems like my go-to. I really like the flexibility
I have a question. I'm kinda building my character backstory and I don't have a DM or group yet.
If my character is a Warlock, do I plan who my patron is? Is that part of what I need to plan?
Since I don't know what world it's going to take place in, I'm not sure if that's something I need to talk to my DM about once I find one.
You can have an idea of what you might like in terms of subclass, but you will need to discuss it with your DM to see if they have specific ideas/allowances
The details is something you should work with once you have a DM.
Ill look into this and the one on one thanks
also what are the community opinions of the optional class features?
Generally better than the originals mechanically
I don't know if "the community" can really be considered to have unified opinions on most things tbh
Use all of them
i guess what im asking is if there's any real controversy around them
why would there be …?
Optional class features is up to the individual DMs to allow at their table or not.
I don't know why there wouldn't be either. I'm pretty new to all this
I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about how "the community" feels about things
All that really matters is how your eventual table/DM feels about stuff and if you like it or not
👍

Guys Im new and cant find a group to play with, i have been trying for days now and nobody wants to play with a newbie... Any ideas to help me????
Not really, you just gotta find the right group, it might take a while.
Finding a D&D group is like any other social activity - it can take time to find the right group, get schedules aligned and carve out time to do some D&D.
I'm also having trouble finding a group right now but for different reasons, you just gotta hold out hope.
I recommend joining community campaigns as they allow you to play dnd one shots and have opportunity to meet people that you can potentially play in a home campaign.
thanks
You can learn more about DND’s official community campaign in #adventurers-league

Hey everyone, I just joined this server and I'm very new to the technicalities of online play, as I've only ever played with my family and school friends in person. Can someone help me figure out how to start looking for a playgroup that accepts minors, and how to use VTTs like Roll20? It's all so confusing, and I'm not sure where or how to start.
You can find a game there, as for the programs you'd probably the best off this online tutorials.
Ah, alright. Thanks a million; I'll go check it out.
No problem, good luck finding a game, as a fellow minor it make take you a minute...
There are couple of avenues worth pursuing.
In this server specifically:
- You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in #looking-for-players as those are posting by DMs looking for players.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign in #adventurers-league , then check out #1050206572535623690

Hi im new to D&D and my friends who are also new except 1 who was never the DM apparently want me to DM can someone help me make a campaign
Have you played D&D before?
There's a bunch of pre-written campaigns which could help alleviate the stress of DMing for the first time, though a lot of them cost money.
Why not look for a dm
me and my friend just want it to be us
I don't recommend writing an adventure from scratch if you have never played D&D before for many reasons:
- It's a lot of work preparing (designing, writing, drawing maps, etc).
- You lack the experience to know what's balanced.
- It's a lot of work.
There are free prewritten adventures found on sites like DMs Guild and DriveThruRPG:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/dungeon-masters-only/43718-list-of-free-dnd-campaigns
If you have a budget I recommend buying either the Starter Set or the Essentials Kit, both come with an adventure made for new DMs and players in mind.

They’re completely different rulesets
They share similarities, they’re both centred around the same principles of roleplaying, and they have a similar stat system and they both use a lot of d20s
But a lot of it is different
It also depends on what edition of each you’re talking about
different game systems.
For example, one has bonuses and DCs climbing into the 40s and 50s, the other has "wow, DC 22 is extremely high"
One has a whole assortment of circumstantial, luck, equipment bonuses, the other includes advantage and disadvantage instead.
PF2 has a 3-action system, DND has an action, bonus action, move system
I know nothing about this game but it seems cool. Where should i start and what should I do?
Figure out who you want to be, jump on DNDbeyond and play around with the character creation system on there.
thanks
Pf2e’s main penalties/bonuses are circumstance, item, and status btw
Hey just dropped into the discord, is there a way to filter the lfg type channels for timezone etc?
No just need to look through
Hey guys - newbie here.
Me and my friends are going to start a group in person, one of us is experienced as a DM, rest are brand new.
What would you recommend to have each as a player to enhance the experience? So far for us each player will have:
- 1x Dice Set
- 1x Dice Tray
- 1x Player Handbook
- 1x Notebook
- 1x 3D Printed Mini
- 1x Character Sheet
Other things we have:
- 2x Xananthars Guide
- 1x Cauldron of Everything
- 1x Monsters of the Multiverse
- 1x DM Guide
- 1x DM Screen
- 1x Lost Mine of Phalvender
We are looking to get:
- Terrain Mat (with squares and markers)
- Spellbooks for certain classes
- Campaign Creatures Set (the circular bases with the cling icons for monsters)
I know we definitely have enough for playing, but we want to just have as much physically on the table as possible before playing, just to immerse ourselves a little more.
Any recommendations for quality of life things, or anything at all I’d love to hear.
Initiative tracker
If you have space in the room, a white board
All the snacks and drinks
Laser pointers
I mean this is extravagance
Actually as a more practical thing - when you say dice set i assume you mean one of those matching sets with one of each size?
If you’re gonna throw a few bucks around i’d say those are actually suboptimal
Correct! Thats exactly what I mean
i would give each player:
Two D20’s so they can roll with advantage/disadvantage at once
Also players with Extra Attack can roll both attacks at once and save time
Also, multiple damage dice
I color code mine
attack 1: red d20, red d8, etc
attack 2: blue d20, blue d8, etc
Rolling multiple attacks and damage at once in the tray for efficiency
Spellcasters and rogues should have multiple d6’s
We have a lot of spare dice sets so we will actually do this, thank you
i have 8 red d6’s for you know what
A Dice tower for the DM is also handy for big rolls
Dimension 20 has a “Box of Doom”, a plastic skull dice tray
It had a camera for the audience
Overkill for home game
If space is an issue you could use online dice rollers but I got a say, there's something nice about rolling physical dice.
Funny thing is we work for a broadcast company so we have cameras and ability to do that too 😂😂😂 we were thinking about it LOL
DM’s guild also has useful cheatsheets for new players, basically a flow chart of action/movement/bonus action/reaction
My apartment has a business centre so we’re gonna book a conference room
It will be a massive long table with a big TV at the end of it so space isn’t a problem
This will be extremely useful
Sounds like a great physical setup
Yeah I never played before but I like things to look cool and put effort into it
We also ordered some metal gold silver and copper coins to use as currency
https://www.dnd-compendium.com/player-guides/cheat-sheets not a bad cheat sheet
What I think I’ll do additionally is like you said with a guide for turn order etc, I’ll print some cheat sheets like that
For new players, in addition to knowing the rules/character generally, i encourage new players to think of what their character can do in situational terms:
-
in a combat where does my character want to stand? Far or near?
-
if i am a weapon user, melee or ranged? Whats my movement?
-
if i am a caster, what spells do damage? Which ones affect the battlefield? Which ones debuff?
-
what is my strongest option? What is my cheapest option?

are my resources, like ki points, spell slots, whatever resourcss?
i find it useful to think of my sheet in those terms instead of “memorize everything”
I think I’ll combine my own cheat sheet and definitely add this
also for immersion:
Encourage players to describe what their character wants to do in more natural language instead of mechanical terms
Example: “i would like to roll an insight check against the shady bartender”
Vs
“(Character name) feels suspicious, whats my read on them?”
The balance is teaching them how ability checks work and which skills apply to what but also encouraging them to put themselves in character
As a dm when players ask to roll, I get confused lol. Because I don't specifically know what they want to do. So I just ask for clarification. Much easier to gauge the diffculty of a specific action rather then something vague.

First start with learning about the rules of the game (see the link to the free basic rules)
Maybe watch some YouTube/Twitch streams of D&D games to see how others play the game (do note that these streams are more entertainment then "how to play")
Then make a character sheet (see the first couple of chapters in the free basic rules as it covers character generation)
Then find a group to start playing!

Hi can anyone please teach me how to play I'm new this
do you have a more specfic question? I mean the most basic is that you have a dm who runs the world and you roll dice to determine what happens. But I'm guessing you have a more specfic question then that.
I'm new to the game so I'd like to learn the basics for now
Ok. do you know how to make a character? that is the best place to start.
My character is done its a Rouge
Ok? so you understood the whole character creation proccess? or did something not make sense?

Take a read through the basic rules for a concept on how the game mechanically works
K thnx
I mean.. ounce you have made a character you are most of the way there. Your character sheet basically just tells you what to add to certain rolls.
Ok thank you
As for the concept
Players play an individual character (think the cast of Lord of the Rings)
the DM is the world and monsters and non-player characters and determines what they find and so on (The armies of mordor, sauron, witch king, the noble king guy, the ghost army, all of them).
Collaborative storytelling. The DM informs the Players what's going on, the Players react / take action. Whenever something comes down to chance of success or failure, or combat, we have the rules to provide consistency, and power scaling - some creatures are better at some things than others might be.
Ok so it's similar to the games I often play
Almost like a mmorpg type games
Sounds fun
Ehh. if the mmorpg dev team could changes things on the fly.
Yeah
Hello I'm new here but I know a bit about DND also.
What Otherworldly Patron said is true.
The DM or Dungeon Master, (sometimes also refered too as a GM or Game Master) is basically the "god" over the game and tells the story while the players interact with the world and alter the story telling by adding their own input.
K I got it
New 5e Player/DM here. Used to play 3rd edition back in my younger years, but now that the kids have taken an interest I've dusted off my dice and jumped back into adventure!
That's why every PC (Player Character) has their own background or (starting basis).
Think of this as like the roleplaying aspect of the entire game.
Are you playing a rogue whose a criminal and because they are a criminal maybe they turned to a life of crime because the king or queen of their hometown land was having taxes being paid too highly so your character the rogue criminal turned to crime to survive.
Or maybe you're a wizard who really wanted to go to wizarding school but you have to teach yourself since it's expensive etc etc etc.
The player building in the game of DND is literally up to imagination among not just the PCs (player Characters or Players.) But it's also up to the DM since they (the DM) is the one responsible for making you want to care about Bob the merchant or Queen Valar of Thesimia whose beauty sweeps the lands. Etc etc etc.
I read a lot of lore about the game and have only played a hand full of times.
I actually come from the Vampires the Masquerade TTRPG but I wanted to give another game, (another TTRPG) a try since Vampires was all that I really know and welp here I am.
A Rouge who was a soldier but now retired searching for a adventure
Exactly.
Then you build off that and branch out like this.
Does your rogue have any family members, a mother a father IF so where do they exist or live are they dead. Does your rogue have a family of their own if so are they alive or dead or alive but have a sickly illness. Maybe that's why they went on the adventure is to find a cure for their loved one or whatever it may be.
Again the possibilities are endless
Hi there
Don't make it too complicated though. Since the game isn't exactly about you the PC. It's a group game.
if im playing a cleric with
do i add my wisdom modifer to the dmg rolls of all my spells?
You just need enough backstory about your character that the DM can play with and use as a character plot device of you will.
When attacking with a weapon, you add your ability modifier--the same modifier used for the attack roll--to the damage.
A spell tells you which dice to roll for damage **and whether to add any modifiers.
**
@rugged sleet depends on the spells since some say that you can and others do not. However it is up to the DM of your game to ok or verify that since some DMs rule bend or brea rules entirely.
It says to roll 1d8, or 1d12 if they're missing any HP.
It doesn't say you add a modifier.
oh wow
A Rouge in search of an artifact to cure a deadly illness that may cause a plague and the dead to rise
isnt that pretty weak compared to alot of classes then?
im playing my first campaign just with some friends
@graceful rover Exactly.
Now you're getting it.
and our rogue does so much with backstabs
no, they get spells in general
and their cantrips eventually improve as they level
and cantrips are infinitely usable
what level are yall
they can do one attack (or two with two weapon fighting)
and your caster can do a tier 1 cantrip (being 1 die of damage)
@rugged sleet
Ziggy Clerics are the backbone to every party. Since everyone is taking damage. If you want to talk about weak classes it's The Beast Master Ranger from the Player's Handbook.
but i feel like i cant even do good healing
our druid casts good berry between fights
What are you playing Life Domain Storm Domain War?
light'
My character is a Rouge though my race is elf
Clerics aren't necessarily the 'backbone'
Ziggy you get access to Fireball a Wizard Sorcerer and sometimes Druid spell, if they go Wildfire Circle.
there's no set roles in DND
Also no but Clerics have all the healing spells while druids get a little and rangers also get a little.
If you get petrified then you'd need a Cleric or a really good paladin who knows greater restoration.
you can link to images, with context
the 'bad' spells tend to just be stuff like... True Strike, Spare the Dying, Poison Spray
is images a different channel?
no
Honestly there isn't really anything as a Bad spell. Spare the dying can come in clutch only thing bad about it is it has to be touch based but that's easily solved once you take a specific subclass at lvl 3 of the cleric subclasses. But that's just my own opinion here. Which is not really valid since my favorite subclass is beast master ranger 😂
you can't upload images here
all you can do is link to images
at level 1*
Clerics get Domain at 1st level.
Was trying
you can't send images here
No but the link for the image.
you can link to images, using URLs, given you provide context (so not just randomly posting links without context)
is there a channel where i can just link an image?
I am not tech savy
if you desperately need to, you could send it to Avrae
are there any online D&D sessions at all?
or use some image hosting website
Multiple, you can check #looking-for-players to find some
Not sure I like to try a session
I just know lore about the game 🤣 I'm a Vampires the Masquerade player and wanted to get my feet wet into another TTRPG game.
But yeah that's character building in a nutshell. 🥜
Can I add you purple Dino skar
Of course 😁
K
your class table
You're a level 2 cleric and level 1 fighter, right?
You'd look at level 2 of the Cleric table to see what you've got
Oh no. Multiclassing.
and you can prepare an amount of Cleric spells equal to your Cleric level + your Wisdom modifier (and you get bonus spells for your Domain added on for free)
🫡🫡
But yeah Light Domain Clerics are bad*ss awesome!
hey so hypothetically, if intiative was me, my teamate, goblin. and my teamate was on the ground doing death saving throws, if i cast healing word on them. do they get up and get a turn?
yes, by normal rules they do.
also what does resistance to something actually do?
You take half damage from the damage type you have resistance against
As for light domain, it is not the typical healer cleric subclass.
You get burning hands as domain spell. A cone aoe dmg spell is not something clerics usually have available.
Anything I should prioritize as a deep great one warlock? At lvl 2 I got passives that add my charisma modifier to my eldritch blast damage(+3) and the affected entity gets slowed by 10ft. Spells, I have the one that doubles an object's value, dissonant whispers and tasha's hideous laughter
The other lvl 1 feature is a defensive option to protect yourself from attacks, but falls off in later levels once enemies get multiattack
Your choice to start as fighter delays your spell progression by 1 lvl, so you will practically always be 1 lvl behind the other full casters
so you great old one warlock?
Oh yep yep, my bad
I just want to ask for some good spells/passives I could get later on so I don't screw up my build 😛
I thought about the one that lets me push the enemy away by 10ft, adding the slow, could be quite useful to keep a melee enemy away
I could also go a bit melee with booming blade later on(?) Got like 14 constitution
imo the repelling blast is better than the movement reduction. And maybe something more out of combat utility based could be better.
Armor of Shadows
Eldritch Sight
Devil Sight
Mask of many faces
Eyes of the rune keeper
These are all great invocations imo
My character is a drow so eldritch sight doesn't seem that useful
(unless that's not the darkvision one?)
you will be less effective in melee even with booming blade, and your probably low ac would make you an easy target for enemy frontliners.
Also the telepathic speech you get at lvl 1 is a useful ability to have as an option to help solve problems
13 ac isn't much, true..
I haven't thought of a use for telepathic speech yet
Could I talk with my dm to make it easier intimidating someone?
Or is that not how it works
devil sight is better than darkvision. 120ft vs 60ft.
Darkvision does not allow you to see colors.
And by raw you still have -5 passive perception in darkness (but many dms ignore that)
defenetly. if the party is in a situation where they need to intimidate someone, suggest ways how your telepathic speech could help.
It does not even have to be you doing the attempt, you might use it to support an party member.
Also you can use it to communicate info etc to allies without enemies hearing
Awakened mind only has the requirement that you see the creature. For an observer there is no indication you are doing it. And the target does not even need to be willing for it to work.
My tip is, to give the "how" a thought and how the telepathic speech can be used to support the partys plan.
So theoretically I could go "bard moment" and insult them in their head, giving them suicidal thoughts?
Well if the goal is to get someone in a bad mood for some reason that could work.
Or would they know that it's me talking to them
Like, can I plant thoughts in their head
Without them realizing
hello
That is something to check with your DM. I would say they dont know it is you per se, unless they recognise your "thought voice" because you revealed it to them bevore, but i would say they are aware that it is a strangers voice (which can be spooky af tbhxD)
Well if I started hearing voices in my head I'd freak out for sure haha
we also adopted a kenku, he's an absolute gamer and landed 2 crits in a row

do i need to buy any of the books, if so which ones?
Hello
Player's Handbook
There are websites in which you can read the players manual and DMs manual if you don’t mind reading online.
Hey, does anyone know a good place to learn the rules for the game ??
hi
Maybe a channel or a well-structured manual somewhere ??
All you need to start with are the free basic rules
These ones ??
Yes called dndbeyond
Hallo
I never read the rules before my first time playing. You just have to find a group to play with. They'll teach you the rules. But if you want to read the rules first, yes, the basic rules are enough I think. If you want to be dm in a group, you need some more rules.
hello
U mean read
?
🤦♂️ yeah
Ok then, thx.
You're welcome
(I think I am a little bit stupid)
My friend @grim anvil invited me here for a campaign. Im completely new to dnd but would like to get in too it
Happens to the best of us, lol.
Feel free to ask questions. But as I said before, I never read the rules before first time playing. The basic rules you need are for free, so you don't need to buy anything.
Zel this is just the official dnd server
to join the campaign you neet to dm the dm
lmao
Oh
Lol
Yeah when people say "DM me" there's a bit of ambiguity
I mean it's also one other term
god
you know what dm means in this case?
Mf i wanted to be both barbarian and cleric
schrott
Both, so "direct message the dungeon master"
You can send a message to the dungeon master
yeah?
funny name
Did it
yeah
👏
cya
if you want a complete d&d 5e experience get the player's handbook
alright then

im new and just made a character so can someone help me pls
What kind of help were you looking for?
#find-a-game can point you in the right direction once you're ready to play.
But can you be a little more specific than "everything"? What's one question you have, to start?
But I tried that and it doesn't really give anything useful
is everything relly possible in DnD games?
Yup anything
ive heard peaple say its very fun and id like to try it out
Yes and no
how does your stats affect your gameplay
Tried what? Asking specific questions?
D&D games operate within a game world and that world (like real life) has limitations
i see
Those limitations are obviously different from the real world, but they exist nonetheless
okay so within limits everythin is possible
No like finding a group
For example you can't just shoot the moon or carry a mountain
But we've got magicians doing spells
Yes, but that's kinda of a truism
okay
The point of D&D is that you explore the world as your character
so im a rogue, can is just dodge meteors with evasion
Did you mean to reply to a different message? 😅
It is mostly a game about a group of people creating a story. The Dungeon master brings the world, lore, the enemies, and events that happen, and the players are the group of "main characters" the story focuses on that live in this world and need to deal with whatever the plot is
What part of finding a game are you stuck at?
someone answer pls
Don't get pushy, people will answer questions if they want
Do you mean "evasion" as in the 7th-level Rogue feature? Or as just... jumping out of the way?
the first one
For this server, you need to be at least 13. The game itself has no real limit.
I'm not sure
To be honest I never used discord before
Can you give a list of the things you have tried?
The spell Meteor Swarm, at least, would meet the qualifications for Evasion.
what lvl r u guys?
A creature takes 20d6 fire damage and 20d6 bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/meteor-swarm
thnx
I have characters of various levels.
Not everyone is a player, and not everyone plays just one character, so that question doesn't really make sense
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
i meant a dungeon
I went to the address and clicked the commands but it kept sending me to the same place
Again, not really how D&D works
Have you read the basic rules?
Then you were likely clicking the channels, not the commands
That sound like you clicked a channel link rather than the command. The commands start with /.
The channels begin with a # while the commands begin with /
You can alternatively just type /looking-for in any channel, then select the command from the list of suggestions.
Maybe
Dnd is more like a get together event with other people. And like any event you need to coordinate with others to pick a time to meet and someone to prepare the adventure.
Again this is like the third time I'm using Discord
Well given the commands don't take you anywhere, but the channel links do, it's the only explanation
I'll try that
Frankly, though, if you're looking to join as a player, you'll likely have more success by simply replying to the games already posted in #looking-for-players.
Yep, passive approaches such as making a post and waiting for others to reach out to you is going to take a while.
Best to do both, cast a wide net
It can also benefit to play one shots. Whether as a part of a community campaign or as a test run with people you reach to.
I had a question.
In one of our d&d sessions,we were nearing the end of the fight. And Then it was my turn.My friends were compelling me to heal them (bcz thry think as life cleric thats all im supposed to do) instead of attacking the bbeg.
I realized that I could end the fight right there by attacking the bbeg because if I healed them, fight could have ended being even more prolonged.
So Instead of healing them and losing my turn,I used Sacred flame and As a bonus action used spiritual weapon as backup.
All of them turned at me and started shittalking right in front of my face. But then I rolled the dice and my sacred flame and Spiritual weapon both damaged the bbeg and killed it for good.
Despite that,I was constantly being mocked for prioritizing my attacks over them being healed fast and dealing the final blow themselves at the risk of TPK.
Should I have listened to them and healed them first?
If they were about to die then yes, otherwise you did the right thing imo
You make your choices yourself
You ended up preventing the enemy from another round of damage and harmful effects after all
No need to heal damage that the enemy wasn't alive to deal
Healing in dnd is not the same as healing in video games like mmos.
Did you explain your plan to your team? Even if you didn’t, I think there’s a bright, broad line between disagreeing with a choice and being a jerk about it. They sound like jerks.
The whole point of D&D is that each player controls their own character and shapes the story in their own way.
Clerics in dnd are not heal bots.
They were saying how I might waste my turn if the dice roll was bad.But I explained that I will add spiritual weapon as bonus action so i will have better odds
Do they consider their own turns wasted when they choose to attack?
Healing can also be a wasted turn if the enemy will just deal the damage again and the PCs wind up back where they started. It really depends on the context, but healing in D&D is not as effective as in video games, as implied above.
The DMs job is to present situations in which players must make decisions. You made a decision. That's the game.
Our dm is very observant of stuff like this
He notes the way we tend to play and then sets up obstacles according to that.Everything we had made into a habit got us into trouble
In dnd, when you get brought down to 0 hp you still have to make death saving throws.
So that gives the players a lot of leeway. Not to mention that healing potions are a thing and any single class can bring up a downed ally.
im new and my opinion probs isnt much but i think you did what you thought was best and even made a backup so ur in the right and it was a good play
So I felt like he would have retaliated
As he is always saying he didnt know life cleric could be utilized liked I did
And I had Soare the dying as cantrip
I could have saved them easily once it was all done
Hello, I am just fairly new to D&D, because like I have what's called an Otterkin cleric, but sometimes idk if custom races are allowed sometimes.
That depends on the DM.
hwo long have you guys played D&D for?
Whether you’re at full HP or 1 Hp a character’s effectiveness doesn’t change.
Little over a decade now!
wow
Six or seven years, I think, for me.
I have been playing for 3 yrs
Or at least since I dove in deep.
Its fairly normal in dnd
Gotta start somewhere!
Even 5 yrs isnt much
Some folks have been playing for decades and decades. Not me, but it is possible to play this hobby for life.
also are you under or over age?
just curious
To be honest I played for.. basically 1-ish year? or months, because my D&D got cancelled due to scheduling (spiral of death or smth like that) and he fact that like .. people still hadn't done their backstories/ideas after a little/long time.
Lol
I believe it's against server policy to state your age openly, but you'll find plenty of people of all age ranges in this hobby!
As a cleric, it’s often better to deal damage and reduce the number of enemies. As typically the side with the most turns tends to win.
As such it’s better to use healing spells such as healing word for when after an ally is knocked down.
my bad thats y i asked general not specific
General is fine. ✅
I mean, I use healing word since it's AOE, I take like one turn healing, and basically 2 turns attacking.
Agreed. You'll find that most of the best healing spells work exclusively outside of combat, too!
i know i did on purpose
Are you perhaps thinking of Mass Healing Word? The basic Healing Word only affects one person.
Oh-- Yeah, MASS Healing word. Ty.
Healing word only heals one target. It’s not an AOE unless you mean mass healing word.
which are your fav classes
Monk
I got mixed up with the two of them, so yeah, I use one Healing word for one person then attack for 2 turns.
mine is bard
Ranger.
Artificer's a lot of fun.
Just find it satisfying to not do close-quarter combat while having your beast/companion attack. (Although I did accidentally kill my companion once.. Oops.)
Are we off-topic at this point? The channel is really meant for getting folks oriented with the game.
if you are in right circumstannce you can just make everyone do the congo for a year nonstop
tru im sry
A friend who usually plays wizard tried playing as War Cleric for one session in another campaign.
He used one healing spell mid combat which instantly revitalized most players in that campaign.
The people who were in that campaign then started forcing me to take up that particular spell and I was called dumb for not knowing enough about my spells as a cleric.
I then looked up the spell and it said the prep time was 10 mins
Honestly, your group sounds kind of bad. There are ways to have a reasonable discussion, but you’ve mentioned them actively insulting you.
To be honest, I'm glad I have a lot of free time to study my character to see what they do. For example: I forgot Hunter's Mark existed.
THen when I read it, now I know for next combat.
Last session we managed to get our hands on two healing potion
Then the rogue and ranger got into a argument about distribution of loots. It got heated.Afterwards thry fought a dog and somehow managed to get injured there too. Then despote my pleas that healing potions were way too expensive in our dms world
Both of them chugged up the healing potions just to spite each other
ouch.
Yeah, I suggest walking away. I know that’s easier said than done, but I can’t imagine that being a fun group to be part of. That’s just my two cents, though.
As the saying goes no dnd is better than bad dnd.
Thanks it works
Yall I got a huge ass question, as a rouge specifically level two. Can I use sneak attack with a long sword? I’m using this as a i don’t even remember, when you use something as a weapon but you don’t know how
Unfortunately no, unless your Longsword has the finesse property for some reason.
I meant a improvised weapon
No.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#SneakAttack
The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon.
Awh man
Rapier d8 longsword d8/d10 so not much difference
That's true! Mechanically, a Rapier, a Shortsword, or a Scimitar might be more what you're looking for.
Improvised weapons don't have "finesse" property nor are ranged weapons (that's why they're improvised).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ImprovisedWeapons
Does anyone know if many people play Dnd on tabletop simulator?
Some people do, but it's not the most common choice.
There's probably a decent group of folks. That's what my group used a few years back.
Hello, I'm new and I don't know how to play but I heard that is a lot of fun. Can someone please teach me? Oh, and maybe it would be useful for you to know that my timezone is UTC+2.

Hello 👋
hi
Can anyone help me to create character?
Im just got 3 concepts for my character, each one is based on Damage/Support/Tank
All of one is barbarian
Have you tried the d&d beyond website/app?
I found it quite helpful
no, but my friend wanted to invite me to his dnd party
aaaaaaaand he is in army right now,,,
so, i still want to play and try this DnD
You should definitely have a look at that website then https://www.dndbeyond.com
The app is way more useful in my opinion though
but how you playing DnD? In this app?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Not playing just using the character creator tool
D&D Beyond is just tools site for character sheets and digital books. It's not the game itself.
Interesting
Watching Critical role is how I found myself here today lol
I really need to figure out how to watch Critical Role right...
Its on Youtube
I was watching it on YouTube
Yeah, but I want to start from the beginning and there are so many episodes, many I know are not nessacary to watch.
how to have the bot post something in looking for players?
They have playlist of their campaigns if that’s all you wanna watch
type the command /looking-for-players
anywhere?
yep
I only really am watching the 2nd campaign they did.
I think it was the one with fjord or smth.
This all seems surreal to me I’ve always heard people talk about playing D&D and always wanted to get into it, but never really took the plunge so to speak until a few days ago.
I watched the first 12 episodes of Season 1, 80% of them had to be in cave, fight duregar, still in cave and that was sorta the whole 4 hour episode.
If you guys want to keep talking about Critical Role, it would probably be a good idea to do so in another channel. This is getting a bit off topic for the newcomers channel
The critical role “Handbooker Helper” videos are a series of turorials on the game, NOT part of any live play campaign
Sorry about that.
Any advice on the best way to go about selecting a dm? Everyone in the group that I am a part of is fresh fresh to this and no one is really sure how to go about electing a dm
Why not just have everyone take a turn running a game as the DM? Whoever likes the role can keep it for a longer stretch of time.
Understandable if you've never done it before, but if everyone let that stop them, no one would ever do anything. I mean that beyond D&D specifically.
Remember it's a game with friends. The point is having fun. If you can remember that, hopefully that can help ease the nerves.
Plenty of DMs started out without any prior experience! It might be a bit scary, but it's also fun! Plus, if the rest of your players are new as well, you're all going in with the knowledge that there will be a few bumps along the way when it comes to rules
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure free adventure with lots of hints and guides perfect for new players and DMs
from my understanding, of my very limited DND knowledge, it never hurts to maybe have a "DM behind the DM" someone to maybe bounce creative ideas off of.
A mentor?
The only way to become a good DM is by doing and learning from your mistakes.
Most DMs are busy with their own tables to watch over the shoulder of another DM.
Sure you can be inspired by Matt Mercer or Bryan Lee Mulligan but don't try to become them.
like I said, it's limited knowledge. The podcast I listen to has a person behind them to help with story and things like that
is there some voice channels?
Not on this server, no.
I've never actually been in a campaign, so.... just take what I say with about a pound of salt
How would I roll an attack roll for my players
You shouldn't be rolling for your players. They should roll for their own characters.
They would roll a d20 + appropriate ability modifier + Proficiency Bonus (if applicable)
Ik but I wanna know since we are all new and I would wanna tell them this
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Nah for some reason I can’t open dnd beyond cause my pc is glitching and I don’t wanna read on my phone
Read Chapter 9: Combat on Making an Attack:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MakinganAttack
Then download the Basic Rules PDF

Hello I’m new here
Welcome!
Thank you! ^^ I’ve been interested in playing DnD for a while and would like someone to teach me how to play ^^
There's some handy links here that can help you get started:
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
But did you have any specific questions?
Not that I can think of at the moment but if do have any questions I’ll definitely ask!
hi
Its a pdf, free, linked in this channels pinned posts
hi i am so sorry to bother everyone but for the "looking for" section do i send that message in the "find a game" channel or do I send it somewhere else? I just don't want to do anything wrong 🧍
No it's not, it's a link to the D&D Beyond version
the bot command will work in any channel, and the form that pops up can only be seen by you, so it won't disturb anyone
The PDF of the SRD is not newcomer friendly and the Basic Rules PDF is far from comprehensive
THANK YOU :'))))
Over a hundred megs for a 22 page pdf? Give me strength.
Welcome
Yup feel free to use our resources
Will do
hello
Hey so I got to the "Contests" part of the guide. That's a statement "when a monster tries to force open a door that an adventurer is holding closed". In this situation who is the monster, the DM? I mean who rolls the dice for the check for the monster?
The DM controlls all monsters, and rolls any ability checks, attack rolls, or saving throws for them
So I thought.
The DM controls basically anything that isn't a player character.
('Cause every DM knows player characters simply can't be controlled.
)
Yo im new to this server
Welcome
@neat glacier You may find the Basic Rules here! It is on DND beyond, includes everything you need to know about 5e.
It also includes class information for the twelve base classes, and one subclass for each of them.
Questions are welcome and very important. :3
hello?
hey i'm new to everything but I've been doing a lot of reading. I have a couple questions though. 1. would a +1 to attack rolls trigger on every EB trigger for warlock. also about UA 7/8 how often do DMs play with those rules as opposed to 5e or is that just something in the works?
I'm cooking, dw. been looking up answers for a while but can't find those specific answers
hopefully someone knows the answers then
obvi idk how to help lol
wish I could help, I'm too new
hey u wanna play sme dnd
im retty sure we can find a dm
o help us play
and we can get 2 more newcomers
idk how this works

finding a dm is hard tbh, I have a large group that wants to play. I'll add you though if one of them can't make it I'll let you know
Read above if you wanna learn how to play.
Any other questions you're welcome to ask here or in their respective channels.
@cyan kiln can you answer my questions? I've been looking for a minute
- would a +1 to attack rolls trigger on every EB trigger for warlock. also about UA 7/8 how often do DMs play with those rules as opposed to 5e or is that just something in the works?
justlooking at that ^^^^ my brain hurts
UA questions should be in #1026901431132885064
fair how about the EB trigger?
If you have a rules question ask in #dnd-rules
This channel is to help out new players to D&D.
thank you
I'm new lol sorry
just been reading a lot before I come on asking for help
What he said, was busy trying to figure out what EB stood for...
thanks for the guidance tho
You need to clarify where the +1 is coming from as that determines what gets the +1 bonus.
Eldritch Blast is three separate attack rolls, so yes, any bonus to your spell attack rolls would apply to all of them.
thank you everyone!
For the other question UA is playtest content. It’s material they’re considering for a future release of D&D but want feedback on first.
It'll make sense eventually.
Just take your time with learning the rules.
Whether your own DM uses that playtest content, you’d have to ask.
But I’d wager that most DMs don’t.
A dnd game is something that takes time and unfortunately can't just be done in the moment.
If you’re just getting started with learning the rules, though, I wouldn’t dive into UA just yet.
ok im sorry
Because any proposed changes may or may not even make it into the game.
You’ll be better served by learning what’s in it already.
understood
(Once you’ve got a grasp on the game, though, UA can be a lot of fun to try.)
yeah looks really interesting I fell in love with warlock and they have cool stuff for warlocks
hi
how do i choose a character to i pick a preset or can i make one and customize it
Most players prefer to create their own characters.

cool user name by the way
Thanks. Simpsons reference.
been a while since ive watched it
When it comes to creating a character there are a couple of different approaches people use.
- Some start with a Character Concept.
- Others build a character based on Playstyle.
- Some build one based on the current team composition.
- While others will build a character to more easily match their own personality.
Hey guys, I'm Damjan, I'm new to D&D but absolutely interested in all of its aspects. I'm not new to fantasy ganra and I have a decent understanding of D&D through watching people play out campaigns on YouTube and also I know about different races and stuff through playing BG3. I hope someone can show me the ropes and that I can join some online campaigns.

me and my friends are doing a dnd campain and im confused about what my dc does as a player
is the difficulty to hit me not tied to my ac
Your AC is your defense against weapon attacks.
DC is what use have for your spells and class features. This is 8 + Proficiency Bonus + relevant ability modifier
ye but why do i have a dc is the dc for my spells not the one the dm gives
When you try to accomplish something the DM will ask you to roll either a saving throw or an ability skill check against a DC. The DM is the one who decides what that DC is.
When you cast a spell (or other ability) with a saving throw, the DM has to roll a save against your DC. If they meet your DC, they save
That's how you calculate the DC for any abilities of your character that require the target to make a save

oh ok thx ye ive been watching critical role but didnt know they had a tutorial
?homebrew
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.
where would i start to play
The difficulty to hit you with an attack is indeed compared to your AC. It’s an effort of the attacker.
If you’re targeted by a spell that asks for a saving throw, then it’s an effort of yours to avoid or resist it.
Your AC and your spell save DC are determined by your statistics, and for AC specifically, your armor if any.
When something wants to attack you, be it a punch, claw, bite, sword, arrow, a bolt of fire, or an eldritch blast, they have to make an attack roll that meets or exceeds your AC, missing if they don't meet or beat it.
Your spell save DC is 8+prof + ability modifier (depending on your class)
This is the number a creature has to meet or beat when your spells force them to make a saving throw. For you, the higher the better, making your enemies less likely to avoid damage or harmful effects.
I want to make a barbarian that's very high in intelligence, what would a good subclass be?
Why do you want high Int other than for Int-related skills like Arcana, Religion, and History?
None of the barbarian subclasses support having a high mental stat mechanically
They already need their physical ones to be good
Anyway, #character-discussion or #optimization would be the channels to ask for your high Int barbarian
I need help! I finally made a chracter that isn't dragonic bloodline idk what class to make her! She's a frog humanoid with a crossbow
Apparently the word “Intelligence” doesn’t appear a single time in any of the Barbarian rules. 😅
ranger? Though #character-discussion or #optimization might be able to you help you a bit better.
I agree with Zero here, a Ranger would be an awesome class to start out with.
You got the martial skills and half-casting with spells that don't overwhelm you. B)

There
I like how it pops up as soon as you talk about it. 😂
It’s a trick type ? New without the space
What do most people sign up to DnD Beyond with, with data privacy in mind.
For example if I use my google account will my google account default as a username or something
jsut keeping track of stuff
but after talking to people around here... it looks like people us roll 20 a lot more
Couldn't possibly know what most people use to login to for DnDBeyond.
DnDBeyond only uses Google, Apple, and Wizards of the Coast accounts for logins.
Many people do use Roll20 but that's more for virtual tabletop features, not character sheets and books access.
and for data privacy, I use d&d beyond purely on my ipad and no other devices as I can opt out of a lot of the data agrrements
does roll20 offer the same things then plus VTT?
You can go to Roll20 and compare it to DnDBeyond itself if you want. Roll20 does offer a free account tier.
Roll20 was designed primarily for the Virtual Tabletop experience so it's more focussed on map/token functionality then anything else. Roll20 are licensed by Wizards of the Coast to sell DnD 5th Edition books so you can buy books that way - just note they are not compatible with use in DnDBeyond's character sheet tools. Roll20 also provide game finding functionality as well.
dnd beyond now also has game search feature as well
does that include table top games in a local area or just more online like roll20?
Online
There is a store finder link somewhere though
It’s not been updated in a while iirc
hello
im new to dnd
i really liked the concept of just creating ur own character
can someone like explain how this works
would be helpful
Hellooo
You'll find info in the pinned messages 👍
Would recommend reading the free basic rules
i created the character
but i dont have anyone to play with
i need a Gm and players
Then #find-a-game has info for that 😎
thx
As someone new to dnd, if all of my friends and i are adhd and cant really focus for hours on end, can i make games short, but continue the same story, like, a half hour or hour long game... with some sort of save thing, that acts like a long rest? And when we come back the next time we continue it,
Sure that’s fine the story only progresses as you play
You don't need any sort of save mechanic at all! Just stop playing where you feel like you can take a breather, then pick right back up next time. That's how most long-form games are played
D&D is not a video game. It’s just a bunch of people sitting around a table (or online) talking to each other. You can start and stop whenever you want, in whatever situation you want
You could long rest after each session, but then you'd need to account for the fact that they'll be starting every session at their strongest.
Or you could simply keep them where they're at, without resting.
And they can long rest when they choose, or when it makes sense for the overarching story.
Okay, thanks!
Take notes. Even if it's a scribble during the game you can revise them afterwards.
Another option you might consider here is doing play-by-post.
A text-only game where everyone can just check in when they're able.
They tend to be slower games, but so would one with half-hour sessions anyway.
So it's a viable option when schedules are constrained.
I looked for an Adventurers League game near me (in San Francisco, California) but (unless I failed to work the “events near me” feature correctly) I failed to find any
I had hoped in-person games would be back this long after covid lockdown but I haven’t sussed out any yet so I joined this discord (I’m specifically looking for in-person games like those that used to happen in stores)
I am trying to get into DnD and looking for a party. Are there any online games? Like Voice chats playing or things like that. I have looked in my vicinity but I found absolutely none. You can say I live in the middle of nowhere.

How good would a Path of the Berserker Barbarian be if my DM doesn’t play with exhaustion during combat?
This is getting a little in the weeds, but next year they're releasing a revised Player's Handbook.
They're currently playtesting some of the material they're considering for it.
Including a revised Berserker that has no exhaustion penalty at all.
Might be worth asking your DM if you can give that version a try.
You can find it here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/ua/ph-playtest-7
Yeah, online games are pretty common! There’s a helpful article here that covers the basics, and you can check out #find-a-game to see the available options here.

Is #non-dnd-topics where I would ask for feedback on setting up my private server for campaigns with my group? Curious if anyone has useful bot suggestions for session availability.
That or #third-party would be my suggestion.
Greetings!
I'm an artist who usually got commissioned to paint DnD OCs, i've been interested in trying out Table tope RPGs for a while!

Random question, Does watching Critical Role count as a good way to learn about the game?
I've heard that it features a great cast of voice actors.....etc
Critical Role is more of an entertainment show than an actual play show. The DM and players are all professional actors so they don't represent the typical D&D table. Also, they have their own set of homebrew rules.
It's better to learn the rules by reading the free Basic Rules.

Hey, I'm COMPLETELY new to this. I've been interested for some time now, but always nervous to start/ask for help, as it confuses me slightly. I was going to request assistance in starting up? Someone who wouldn't mind helping? I have almost 0 knowledge of game play, and how anything works, really. I tried looking up things but nothing beats guidance from someone who can answer real time etc. Thanks for reading!

No problem.
You can take broad strokes from it
The specific- no, they are loose with them and have homebrew stuff
The general vibe and how to role play, the respect for the others at the table sure. But bear in mind theyre friends and professional actors in a custom studio/table with a production team and its prerecorded
I think you forgot to reply-ping winkil with your message. Either that or your chat didn't scroll
that's not really a newcomer question, more something for #dm-discussion

Can someone explain abaout "Advantage and Disadvantage" I didn't really picked it up when I read it
roll two d20s. Advantage means you take the higher of the two. Disadvantage means take the lower of the two
And how is decided if it is an advantage or disadvantage
Something will say so. There are dozens of different rules, spells, abilities, etc that can cause it
