Just out of interest btw, is it very demanding to join a game of DnD? I've always been living distant from social areas due to parental reasons, no irl friends and stuff, and some other problems so... Basically, I only got as far as watching some DnD series, albeit I am rather interested in being a DM.
Basically, joining face-to-face DnD games is likely not feasable for me at all.

Online play is very common, particular during the pandemic.
Two main options: play by post, you leave messages to each other. On a forum, for instance, or a Discord server. Play is typically slow and detailed.
Voice chat, usually with a virtual tabletop or VTT such as Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo or Foundry is the usual way to play. A VTT lets all the players see the board and roll their dice even though they're remote.
I'm certainly familiar with similar games playing by post, although I'm not sure what exactly DnD by post looks like, is there any that I can look at here?
This server doesn't hosts games.
Is this simply a hub to find others?
Check #find-a-game to find a group to possibly play with.
No, it's a community discussion space that also has game finding channels
You can see some examples here: https://www.rolegate.com/m/explore A lot of folks use Discord for PBP in my experience, so it will look similar but not identical.
I'm pulling out...
No worries. Come back anytime!
Hey I wanted to ask something cause I’m kinda new to dnd
Is it bad that I always end up being the talker of our groups
Like I play a lot of high charisma classes but the one time I didn’t (barbarian) I’m still the talker
nothing innately bad, from what I'm hearing
Not specifically bad but it is important to make sure there is room for everyone else to play their character and feel comfortable in sharing/discussing things with the group.
Yes I take extra care not to cut people off and if I see someone about to speak I close my mouth
Don't jump in whenever there's silence. Some folks need more time to think and process.
The only time I kinda interject is if my character is there and they seem to be about to murder someone who clearly dosent need murdering or just so they don’t you know make us wanted criminals in 10 towns
Ok that is something I need to get better at
My mind goes a mile a minute and I love trying things but I can see I might be going to fast sometimes
dragonborn barbarian?
Dwarf actually
really for barbarian?
I ain’t looking for optimization lol
Sure - with the Tasha's revisions, there is no bad race to class issue that previous editions of D&D may have had
Plus never played a dwarf before it it’s been fun so far I like the stone cutting advantage
my bad, Im brand new and this was the character idea I was thinking of starting with
All good
Play what you feel will be fun for you (and works well with the group and kind of D&D game you're playing in)
And if you're not in a group yet, build whatever you want.
Having a bunch of character ideas on hand is always fun
True that lol
I got a duegar bard and fallen asimar Sorecer in storage I’m inching to try
where can i find a pickup game. (text ONLY)
hello i want to know how does the level system works
Check #find-a-game
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
only until to the chapter of the classes
but i red chapter 3 and 4 very distracted
like i only red 1 pharagraph per class or race
One of the things that is quite different about D&D compared to other RPGs is that having a dedicated healer build isn't really a thing. Healing spells and potions absolutely do exist, and they are important to have in your party, but having 1 player dedicated to the role of healer isn't typically part of the game. Its just not how combat was designed or balanced in this game
Your DM will either use Experience Points or Milestone method of level advancement
There's is no "win"
but do i get new abilities or something?
Look at the features at the next level of your class
ohhh
Each class is different
thank you very much
Hello everyone!! I’m a new player trying to rejoin dnd after years away 🙂
Bg3 really sparked my interest of dnd again lol
Was wondering what you guys think of the cleric class? I made my oc a war cleric in the game, but found out her deity is only in the twilight, knowledge and life domain in 5e

Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
I did! Not the whole thing tho, but i saw that sometimes it just depends on the DM
Read at least the first four chapters on character creation
Some things will depend on the dm, but most of the time the basics will be the same
If they aren’t… well that dm is no longer running dnd 5e

How’d it go
Hi! I've played DND only a handful of times and I really want to connect with a group in my area and play seriously 😊
Your best bet to finding a group locally is to check your local game stores, comic book stores, libraries, schools with clubs, and even Facebook.

I don't know how dnd works, not one bit. So I would express my gratitude if I was taught how to play.

Do mean like create your own? Or prepare from an established list?
homebrew is an option but it's not a pittance to balance and it'd require DM approval
You can’t design your own spells RAW.
As a new player we highly you DON'T homebrew your spells. Learn what spells your class has to offer first.
Learn to crawl first before you sprint.

I'm trying to impart my old man wisdom 😛
Besides there is so much content out there you can pretty much be very close to a character concept that you may have.
Wizard subclass
First messages I saw in the newcomers chat was people saying “I’m new” never would’ve guessed
There is no necromancer class, however there is a necromancer subclass for the wizard
there's no "healer role" definition
Hi I’m tryna find a game on here but realizing it’s actually harder than I thought any advice other than what’s in #find-a-game
they're a wizard
Necromancer is a wizard sub-class. How you want your character to address himself that's flavour. Flavour is free.
I'm not ancient, just older.
Hello! I wanted to get some advice on joining a campaign after it started.
So for a bit of background, my geometry teacher runs a DnD club at school, and I plan on joining, and the next session is january.
Everybody so far is level 3, and I cannot for the life of me come up with a character beyond a rock gnome artificer.
I want to multiclass, but I don't know which one.
A warlock / artificer sounds cool, I could sell my soul for better ability to make trinkets, but I don't know how to go about that.
Then there is artificer / cleric just for the command spell.
And the artificer / bard for vicious mockery.
One thing I considered is a warlock / bard, as they both use charisma.
As far as the gnomificer goes, His name is gerbo, and he will either be lawful evil or chaotic neutral.
As far as my indecisiveness goes, I can't figure out what subclass I plan on using, I have no plan on order of feats, no idea if, and what, I would multiclass, all the while rambling incoherently to myself about backgrounds and neat gimmics.
One was that gerbo was blind, but had an enchanted cooking pot he wore on his head that allowed him to see. That was the one that I modified a tf2 soldier image as gerbo's image...
Help me please!
#character-discussion may be a better place to ask about helping choose your class
One thing that I am deadset on getting is shield guardians. I had a fleeting thought of making 2, then stitching them together to make a 4 armed, 2 headed, centaur construct
Aye
i also wouldn't recommend multiclassing for your first character
Fair point
The allure of simply insulting other beings is very strong.
But, off to character discussion I go
If you're new to D&D stick to one class so you understand it. Multiclassing means you need to know two classes, which is made worse if one or both are spellcasters.
Tieflings have fiendish ancestors.
Changelings are shapeshifters.
Fair.
One question though:
I know warlocks share a set amount of spell slots, aka mage bullets among all tiers of spells, and apparently cast at the spell's highest level. If you multiclass from warlock, do those effects transfer and apply to other spellcasting classes? What about multiclassing to warlock?
What exactly are you looking for
your regular spell slots and your pact slots (warlock spell slots) are seperate
so if you took 1 level of warlock, you'd keep all your regular artificer spell slots, and gain one 1st level pact slot
Really anything consistent and welcoming I really like baldurs gate three and creating characters in that game but don’t really care the fact that it’s the same start every single time I wanna use a new character so I was looking for a dnd setting different from that
Just make a post saying that all the information is in #find-a-game
Oh neato
The "always cast at higher level" is a misnomer
You simply don't have spell slots of a lower level, and they stop upgrading at 9th level when they become 5th level spell slots, and they're separate to Spellcasting feature sourced spell slots
So I can't multiclass to warlock at level 4 and cast a fire bolt with a 9th level slot
you cant cast fire bolt with a slot at all
not even remotely how any of that works
it's a cantrip
9th level slots are achieved at 17th level with "full casters" (the caster classes that get a 9th level spell slot at 17th level)
You don't use slots for cantrips
nothing about multiclassing does anything for it
and cantrips upgrade based on Character level
Oh ok
Good to know!
Now my only questions are:
All my unanswered questions except multiclassing
Well I am a dice goblin, worst case I roll my indecisiveness away.
That list way back up is a bit sporadic
I am aware
I am still riddled with a lot of caffine
I can try to condense it all if you'd like though

I assume I'm supposed to make a character before attempting to join a game?
No, it’s generally better to make a character once you join a group
You can make practice character and come up with different ideas, use point buy or standard array for the stats and keep the backstory vague so they are easier to alter to fit a setting
Greetings and salutations unto you all
Hi
I'm fine. Just bored at work. Anything i can help you with?
Oh no, I'm fine, I'm just browsing around in the server, I'm a complete beginner at D&D since there are not that many groups where I'm from ^^;
Groups you haven’t found yet
I mean, I've searched for any possible IRL groups but there aren't that many active groups, at least, from what I'm seeing, so I'm trying online groups for the time being
Does anyone got essentials kit at home?
how would you handle a small gecko type character that also has a huge mech suit?
using Warforged for the "mech suit" being their person-sized mech
As long as your DM allows
i was thinking it would be a real-world type salamander that also has a 10 ft tall mech suit. maybe artificer?
Might I suggest sticking with what's in the existing rules first before attempting to homebrew? That way you can get experience with the game and how it operates and how different classes balance out.
well, ive tried the original rules up and till now, and i wanted to experiment with a homebrew
That's a bit beyond the scope of this channel
ahh ok
We have #homebrew if you want to chat about creating homebrew classe/races/items/spells.
hey! what's the best way to kinda learn about all the classes and main character profiles/roles in the game? are there good youtube series about that? or is it by reading through every option on dndb?
How do i make a character sheet if i don't have the player handbook
By using the Basic Rules
I'm confused on the starting point system like how do you get +5 charisma and all that
if you do Rolled stats, land a lucky 18, and then get +2 to your stat of choice, you can get a total of 20
Hey everyone
Hi
How does attacking work? Like if a weapon is like 1k6 what does that mean? What do I throw and stuff
the number before the d means the amount of dice
the number after the d means the amount of sides of the die
so 2d6 would be 2 six sided dice
Yep I knew that bur I saw weapons had k between numbers?
no they do not
So i roll like total of 12 so I hit for 12 hp?
could you show an example
Making an Attack as well as Damage (and Healing)
these are the specific tidbits you need
Cant add a file
you could just type it into here instead of only to one person
oh youre in a different language
I apologize, in sectuon of damage/type and under that is 1k8
First is rapier and second is dagger only
no i mean the k is supposed to be a d in english
likes its the same just in a different language
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#Weapons
That's a mistranslation then
Thanks.

I actually bought one yesterday
But I only bought that and a dungeon kit cuz I was under a budget
That sounds like a good start.
Hey! Uhm so im struggling at making a Character rn and I need it done today but idk anything about minotaurs and roll 20, could anyone help me pls?
Do you have a race and class picked out?
If you're using Roll20, you'll need an account and an invite to the game your DM is hosting.
I have those things yes
I just need to make a minotaur in roll 20 and since I gotta make it a custom race and I'm dumb AF idk what I'm doing
I've been sitting with my laptop for an hour and all I have is his stats
Ah, sorry. I'm not familiar enough with doing it that way to help. Reach out to your DM. You should still be able to set your class and background skill proficiencies, and select your starting equipment.
Good luck!
Tyy
I thought it was good enough for the time being if I'd wanna make my start as a DM, but for now, Imma be a player
if you have the character on dnd beyond you can use a tool called beyond 20 that can send your rolls from your dnd beyond character sheet into roll20.
Ooh tyy
hey guys, im new, what should i do?
Best place to start is giving the basic rules a read over

I don't understand the question; and now what?
I created a dnd beyong character but i dont know what to do
Did you read the rest of this message?
So, I'm trying to make a Tabaxi Rogue, and I put 4 skills, they're as the following:
Stealth, Deception, Insight, and Persuasion
I also put down two proficiencies:
Sleight of Hand and Dagger
Is this build too OP as a Rogue or?
If you made your character per the rules, it won't be overpowered
I'm doing everything per the rules as best as I can
My main issue is that my stats are a little ridiculous??? ^^;
Assuming you didn't roll for them* they'll again be fine and not OP
How did you make your stats? Did you roll for them, or use one of the other methods?
*You shouldn't really roll for stats without your DM'ing signing off on it
most DMs will ask you roll in front of them for stats
Fair, I did roll for them cuz I am extremely new so I thought it was an okay method, plus, I'm using Roll20 so I'm not sure if I can use other methods?
Or at least in some verifiable way
Using Standard Array or Point Buy is the safest.
Seems a bit extreme, but you do you
Doesn't really matter, whatever works best for you
Doesn't actually change what character you get in the end
#tales-from-the-table ? Give us more.
Standard Array is acceptable, ye?
For deciding how to figure out stats you should ask what your DM wants the party to do
You have a total and you can decide what goes into what essentially
Are you using dnd beyond to make your character? It has a pretty detailed character creation process.
I'm using Roll20 ^^;
I was planning on doing a solo run to start myself off
Just to get a feel
In the most simplest terms, you have a pool of points, and you assign stats however you see fit, and each stat value has a point cost, so you can't go over a certain amount or make anything too OP. If you want to try this, the best way to do it would to use an online point buy calculator to assist you with it. I believe Roll20 should have one, but I haven't used it, so I don't know that for sure
Fair enough.
So the points come from the numbers we use, but obviously not make them OP cuz that wouldn't be fun for anybody
Roll20 has a bit of a learning curve with their charactermancer
I noticed that, yeee
Also, I like the point buy calculator, I am terrible at math
I approve
how do u know ac number?
Armour + any bonuses from feats, buffs, Etc
AC is a calculation. the base is 10+Dex Modifier, but armor, items and class or racial features can add boni or provide a different calculation
dex modifer is dexs plus number?
Your base AC is 10 plus Dex modifier and other modifiers, such as shield or Ring of Protection. Armour gives you a new base AC that is modified by Dex modifer (if any) and any other modifiers.
lets say your dex score is 14, then your dex mod is +2
It could also be a minus number, but yes.
so if my dex score is 14 and armour is 10 then 24 AC?
Ability Score and Modifier are different things
14 Dex gives you a modifier of +2
Thanks a lot, im new to this and its still confusing sometimes.
And another question, so if my AC is 12 then someone has to roll a 12 to hit me, right?
Yes, an enemy needs to have an Attack Roll total of 12 or higher to hit you.
12 or higher as result of an attack roll, yes
Their attack roll would be a d20 plus their Proficiency Bonus plus any modifiers.
and the number over the 12 would be damage given?
no, damage is rolled afterwards
with a d20 or less?
when you attack with a weapon, then there is a weapon dice (for example shortswords have a d6)
Damage is separate and is dependant on the type of weapon or spell used.
thanks a lot guys youre useful
There are no weapons or spells that roll a d20 for damage
so for damage from a weapon attack, you roll your weapon damage dice plus your ability modifier you used in the attack
damage from spell attacks is down to the indivdual spell
but I dont think there is any instance of d20s being rolled for damage
It was pretty nice. Out of 4 hours that we met, we played for like 2 or 2 and a half.. but for me personally, the whole experience was pretty fun. We didn't get far though, because we were just messing around.. but it's a lot simpler then i first thought and that's pretty nice. Im also glad that i prepared bc i was able enough to improvise or even help the Dungeon Master here and there.. So, yeah, it was fun.
My favourite experience was when the bard performed, the fighter helped, giving him advantage by dancing and i gave him guidance and said: "i put my hand on his shoulder and close my eyes.." and then... he rolled really bad twice lol, so we gave our best, but nobody noticed it...
Oh wow sounds like you’ve found yourself a good group friend! 👍
Hope it keeps going well and good of you to help the dm keep that up if you can they seriously appreciate it!
thank you!! this is really motivational right now 🙂 Yeah, i am really glad we found a good DM, not gonna lie.
I was wondering how do I do curse sheets
"Curse sheets"?
Like if I gave my character wild magic
I'm not sure what you are referring to. That is not a game mechanic in 5e
Wild Magic is a sorcerer subclass, not a curse
Well I’m treating mines like one basically
Since you are posting in this channel, I am assuming you are a newcomer to the game. You should learn the normal rules of 5e before you try to make changes to them
You should also use the proper terms if you want help because what you call/treat them as something else is not what the rest of us know they are to be.
If you want to make a Wild Magic sorcerer, and then flavor/role play their abilities and wild magic surge as a sort of curse, you are welcome to do that. But the fact that you referred to something called a "curse sheet" makes me think you are looking for something more mechanical in nature. Reflavoring only works so long as you do not change any of the rules or game mechanics of whatever it is you wish to reflavor. D&D is a game of rules, and changing those rules can have large consequences on balance and gameplay flow, especially if you do so without a significant amount of experience with the game
Hello to all

Both are linked above.
Ok, thank you so much
Hello everyone, just joined and I thought I'd introduce myself briefly. I'm Alex, and this year I wrote Santa a letter wishing for the D&D Starter Set Dragons of Stormwreck Isle.
I have no previous experience of D&D, but thought it would be a fun experience to try with the wife and friends over the holidays.
The more I look into D&D, and the more I read about it, the more I wish I had started playing a lot sooner!
I am a little nervous about DM'ing for the first time, with players who are playing for the first time as well, but that's probably half the fun. I just have some doubts that I'm hoping I can clarify here with more seasoned and veteran players or dms.
But anyways, I'm excited! Eagerly awaiting in my mid 30s to open this years Christmas present like this was 1995 all over again.
From my understanding, Stormwreck Isle is a good intro. In the meantime, the pinned messages in this channel have some stuff to read/watch that may be helpful.
Yeah, been researching a ton, and looking for a lot of information for the past week. But haven't really ever seen a game fold out so not 100% sure what to expected but like I said, that's probably part of the fun for a first timer
Liveplays are plentiful on Twitch and YouTube.
Do you have a good recommendation of a live play example that is done with new players in mind?
Can ofcourse find it myself but just asking if you had something in mind!
i just bought that starter set today and i'm still trying to figure it out, i'm new to D&D and i would really like to get into it
Most D&D Youtubers do live plays.
Critical Roll and Dimension 20 are the two most popular shows — they're entertainment shows first and foremost because the DMs and the players are professional actors who are great at improv and acting.
Honestly, I'm not sure. I only watch the professional ones, which are really not great for learning how unproduced games go.
i've been watching critical role atm, and i've been getting a grasp of the game
Also, keep in mind that Critical Role uses some homebrew rules.
Yeah I watched Critical Role some but it's definitely not the expectation I have of how our first game will go
yes, i have figured that out. they did explain that themselves aswell
Is a Bard and Ranger a good Mutli-Class?
Multiclassing is less a newcomer question, more for #character-discussion.
I wouldn't recommend it, especially for beginners
Oh, thanks for telling me.
This is the start of a Stormwreck Isle play-through, aimed at an audience of new players/DMs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c09e3cnSwLQ
May be just what you're after!
Hey thanks!
I'll check it out
Oh yeah did give this a look as well, but they use digital rolls which confuse me a little still since I'm not very familiar with the jargon and they don't always show what the players are actually doing
Of course that's spoilers if you intend on playing that adventure.
Yeah, it's okay I'll be DMing the adventure
Well, head to #dm-discussion for DMing advice and also #1029833015423143957 if you want to discuss specifics of that adventure.

Can someone please help explain "hit points at higher levels"? I don't get it's wording. If someones PC had +3 con for 5 leveles, would that be 3x5=15 hit points + their hit dice (or rounded hit dice number)
each level they either roll their hit die, add their con mod, and gain that much max hp, or instead just gain the average roll of their hit die plus their con mod
so say you had a d8 hit die
each level you either gain 1d8 + con mod, or 5 + con mod
Ah! Perhaps I was overthinking it. Thanks.
How should I even start on the ability scores? It confuses me-
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
I’ll prob do standard array, seems basic enough for me, I’m fully new to this so a lot of terms will confuse me 😅🥲
yeah standard array is a great starting point
rolling was the classic, but it's fallen out of favour
Hi everyone im new to d&d and looking to learn more before finding a game! ive been looking through D&d beyond and its been very helpful just thought id reach out for any first timer advice👍
Is 7 hit points bad- 😂😅 feel like it is
not that bad for level one wizards and the like. glass cannons i think theyre called
I’m a rogue 😅
my character has 9, and i'm scared about it too
Level 1 PCs are squishy.
I wasn't joking. it takes a lucky one or two shots from an enemy to take down a level 1 PC.
that boosts my confidence
Eee 😂
a level 1 rogue should have 9 hp at minimum, 10 is safe
i always go at least 14 con personally, you can squeak by with 12
How is it so low- 🥲
Con should always be a higher priority
you have 8 con
Ooo right ok
what class?
rogue
yeah, i saw your message about 9 being safe
all it takes is one unlucky hit and youre on super low health
but same for the enemies
your hp will nearly double at level 2
yeah, i played about with the character creator on beyond and my health will jump to 15 at level 2
I can’t change it online don’t tell me I gotta create the whole character again..
what are you using?
you should be able to change your stat assignments
Dnd beyond website
just go into the manage window
you should be able to change it, i've been playing about with the stats for the last 20 minutes
click manage next to your character's name in the top left, then click "manage character and levels" in the menu that appears on the right
then go to the abilities tab along the top
As a rouge tiefling should I have high charisma or strength?
Charisma.
Dec is my priority I did see that
Ok would this b good :
Dex 15
Con 14
Char 13
Str 12
Int 10
wis 8
yeah
Sweet ty
that's without racial bonuses tho
i would recommend ticking "customise origin" on the first page, so you can move the racial bonuses around
Strength tends to be my dump stat
Just wondering, how many people are generally fine with having the explain things on the get go and during a session? Am completely new, only wrote a single one shot for my two friends and decided I’d like to play myself too, but I learn much better in practice then from reading a looong rule book
most people are fine explaining things here and there, but if they have to teach you the entire system on the go and pretty much spell out the game for you, most people wouldn't be happy
it's common courtesy to at least of some idea of how the game works, how combat runs, and what you can do
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

So I just joined there sever and Iv played a few times Ik the fundamentals but I was wondering on how to campaigns or find ppl who are looking for players the find game section was not all that helpful
Did you read all the information in #find-a-game? It does have some general tips for finding games and not just using our looking for game channels.
But a short run down of our LFG channels:
#looking-for-players is DMs and groups looking for a player to join their campaign/game/group
#looking-for-community is other D&D servers looking for people to join their community - they may have D&D games and groups you can join on their server
#paid-looking-for-game is where you can pay a DM to run a game/campaign for you
and #750812887697588356 is where you can create a post to let folks know you're available to play.
To learn how to use the bot commands to create a post in #750812887697588356, read carefully the instructions in #find-a-game.
I'd also suggest checking out your local game/hobby shops, comic book shops, libraries, even schools with clubs.
There's also Demiplane (online RPG game finding tool), Roll20 (online virtual tabletop but has a game finding tool), and even other RPG servers/forums.
Also you could look for Adventurer's League games near you - AL is official organized D&D play.
What is the Adventurers League?
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

• #adventurers-league — Chat about AL games, events, how to get started, AL characters, or other general AL chatter.
• #1050206875079155742 — Adventurers League rules discussion and questions. General D&D rules discussion belongs in #dnd-rules
• #al-dm-discussion — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for AL Dungeon Masters of all levels of experience to discuss their games, share tips, or share constructive feedback.
• #al-dungeoncraft — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for fledgling or experienced AL authors to discuss the Dungeoncraft program, ask questions, offer tips, or share constructive feedback.
Is there a time on when I can join a find a game?
Cause I am in east Asia time and I don't know when I could join someone
Browse through #looking-for-players and reply to any posts that align with your schedule.
Ohhh
#find-a-game is just a list of instructions.
Hey im super new and I am completely overwhelmed in what to do or how to even start
I’ve only heard about d&d and I just thought it was a simple board game🧍
Welcome! There’s a few good links here that can get you started:
What is D&D?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
How does it work?
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
Where do I start?
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
But if you’ve got any specific questions, ask away!
Oh ok thank you!
How often does a new adventure begin?
I too am new
Might need some more context before we can answer that properly. Can you explain a little more?
So say if I wanted to join a party on there adventure/ playing of dnd how often do new games start
New games start all the time, but it can take a while to find the right one for you. #find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
For context, though, “adventure” usually has a very specific meaning in D&D, which is why I asked for clarification. 😅
Dnd is a social game run and played by human beings across the planet, so…very frequently?
But to find one requires looking in multiple places. Starting with your own backyard
Local game store, university, library
An adventure shares many of the features of a novel, a movie, an issue of a comic, or an episode of a TV show. Comic series and serialized TV dramas are particularly good comparisons, because of the way individual adventures are limited in scope but blend together to create a larger narrative. If an adventure is a single issue or episode, a campaign is the series as a whole.
Facebook. Warhorn, meetup, craigslist
Its like finding any group for any activity
U gotta look
Hi everyone! Just joined this server and I’m completely new to D&D. Nice you e-meet you all!
Welcome! If you're new to D&D, check out the pinned messages here in the channel.
We recommend checking out the free basic rules and getting a feel for the game rules and mechanics.
As a subclass for Wizard, found in the Player's Handbook
hello, i just joined
Welcome!
i wanna start playing dnd beyond, but i have no irl friends so all i can rlly do is make a character
i have like one person irl who's up to play with me, and 2-player dnd is obviously
not gonna be the best experience
damn, i just realized that the wierd Get Started popup is directing me towards the channel ppl go to for that kinda question
DNDBeyond isn't a game, it's a toolset for DND 5e
well it seems like a way to play dnd entirely online so
DNDBeyond isn't the sole arbiter of bringing DND online - it's basically just a place to look at your content and character sheets. It's only recently gotten a maps tool now.
o ok
for a second i was worried you couldn't play dnd online, but after re-reading the New PLayer Guide on dnd beyond i understand what you mean
As long as you can communicate and have a method of determining random numbers (and trust the results) you have a way to play DND
and dnd beyond takes care of the second part iirc
Online dice rollers and voice/video calls have done RNG and communication
virtual tabletops bring the table to the internet
DNDBeyond is an auto-calculating character sheet
and so on
i'm not quite sure how to use the /looking for dm command
You can just type /looking and then select it from the list that appears.
Then hit send.
you do
You can, sure.
oh ok
(spam that should probably be added to #find-a-game, it seems like the most common confusion)
ah ok
It will give you a private form to fill out, and then it posts to the selected channel once you’re done.
oh ok
I’m hoping we can just change it to buttons instead.
fair
mission success
Unfortunately, that doesn't generally work well for this game, because you need to schedule a group to be available for a set time. It's similar to trying to schedule a time to go to a movie or dinner with four or five of your friends. It is a great game, but it does rely on working within a schedule. You can go to your friendly local gaming store and try to find a pick up game / one-shot, but there would need to be a group playing and a space available for a walk-in. They usually have a board posted with when people are running games, so you would have a little more flexibility that way. In a few years, you might be able to do what your are talking about with AI Dungeon Masters, but they are not close to being ready.
Welcome! This is a great game. It has a little bit of a learning curve in the beginning, but you don't need to know all the rules or have all the books to start. The info in the pinned messages is helpful. Take a look at the character creation rules in the basic rule set or the player's handbook if you have that . That should help you get the context of the game. The core is the d20 system -- roll a 20-sided die, add your ability modifier and proficiency bonus (if applicable), and compare it to the difficulty class you need to meet or exceed. It is the same for attacks, checks to succeed with a skill, or a saving throw to avoid something happening to your character.
I'm playing a Barbarian now in one of the games I'm in, and it is awesome. We took on a high level wizard in our last game -- higher level than we should have, and my Barbarian was able to lock him place and just take the spell damage while the rest of the party took him down. Don't worry about your class, they are all fun and the party usually can cover and support each other for any gaps.
Welcome aboard. This is a great game. It has a little bit of a learning curve in the beginning, but you don't need to know all the rules or have all the books to start. The info in the pinned messages is helpful. The basics are that you gather a group of friends or make new ones in an online game, one person is the DM who sets up the adventure, and the rest play characters who go through the adventure. Hi I’m new, my brother was in a dnd group for a little while and listen to a dnd podcast (tales from the stinky dragon) and was looking to potentially join a campaign I’m not sure
If you (or someone else) are looking to join a campaign, #looking-for-players is the place to start.
I’m still unsure should I learn about the game first or learn kinestheticly
Learn the rules first because you may find a DM who's new player friendly but if constantly ask them to pause the game constantly to teach you fundamental rules then it slows the game.

Both are linked above.
I do that at gaming conventions and in gaming store (not so much post COVID). But, I make sure I know the basic rules and have pregenerated characters, so we don't have to take too much time explaining the game at the beginning, and I can show them as I go. However, for a new DM playing and learning together, I recommend one of the starter kit adventures. They are designed to help new DM's and players. You also don't really need anything more for your first game. After that, once you and your friends are hooked, you can get into more of the rules, character creation, etc.

Hi there, Im not exactly "new" to DND but I need help
With?
Sorry to bother, its related to how I play the game, you see Im extremely shy and afraid of talking
its complicated to explain
How are you playing? In person or online? If the latter, via text or voice?
Online, voice chat, I stream the music and the DM streams the app we use for the maps
My campain is set on the Megaman X World, we are reploids who work for the Marverick Hunters, my characters is a Ranger who just got the prestige class arcane archer. So in one session my DM sent us to investigate a laboratory in the woods, he gave me all the stuff in a silver plater, I could shine in that session, it was made for me, and the DM told me so afterwards. I did nothing, I was afraid to said "I do this or that" and I do not talk unless my party members talk to me or and NPC. I am scared of "mess up" so I do not even attempt or say the things.
Also I apologice in advance, english is my second language, for any grammatical errors or wrong words
When you roleplay your PC you don't need to speak in the first person but speak in the third person.
DM: "What do you do?"
PC: "My character Bob does this and Bob says, 'I want a big mug of ale' while he eyes the edgelord rogue in the corner."
Im not "new" to dnd but this is my first campaing and we are in the 15th session by now, and I only did stuff once.
D&D is great for helping you break out of your shell because you can play anyone. You aren't playing YOU.
I'm normally introverted in real life social gathering but I feel more free when I'm DMing
You never got afraird at all?
Of course I get anxious.
I've beeing playing for 40+ years and I still get a bit anxious/nervous before each session.
Stage fright is not unusual.
What drives you to "talk"?
My biggest problem is I let my fear take over me, and stay quiet almost all the session
Not everyone is a natural/professional actor.
In consecuense, I do nothing as well
and my party members are starting to get tired of carring me,
for me, it's wanting to move the story forward
I'm the DM so I have to talk.
I see
If you don't talk then your PC doesn't develop.
Yeah Like I said Im still the only PC who does not got his back story developed because of my behaivor
But there are always shy/quiet players so you're not unique
Take your time trying to get you out of your shell.
Do you know the other players well? If they're friendly then the can help you roleplay by having their PCs chat with your PC.
Talk to your DM to help you roleplay more
Well, they PC got tired of me behing a death weight that they are kind hostile towards him
I can't comment on that. That's a relationship between you and the other players.
well in real life no problem they cool
I mean in the campaing, the characters do not like him
Oh.
Well, work it out with the other players on how they can help you roleplay and develop your PC
D&D is a social group game so communication is key.
And that is what I am trying to improve
If you want to change, then you need to take the first steps. We can only give you advice... it's up to you if you want to heed or ignore it.
I appreciate the advice, thank you.
are there any requirements to play dnd here? I watched a couple of games online, but don't have any kinda idea how to really play dnd
I kinda wanna learn the basics to be the gm for my friends irl, I think the game becomes very goofy if you don't know what you're doing 😄
We don’t play dnd here it’s a space to discuss games and stuff but there are #find-a-game channels

ah, alright thanks a lot ❤️
Hey what do you guys think the best class is for multi target buffing I'm running a druid with tames so I want to buff them
Ask in #character-discussion
How to do players in many places at once well?
do you mean in game, or as a logistics of play sense. I play remotely using a mix of D&D Beyond and Google Jamboard, if that's what you are asking
Tabletop logistics
yeah, each member of my group has google jamboard open which our dm uploads a map to
Im planning on just playing a more or less on the run tabletop game inside of a game as rp, but many characters would be in different places before they would meet, and id like to know how to do secret stuff so to say that not everyone sees at once/ just have everyone do something
That's not really D&D
That sounds more like freeform roleplay/collaborative story telling
Well yeah, but im talking terms of logistically doing it
That's not a topic for this channel, this is a D&D newcomers channel
We have #non-dnd-topics for non-D&D discussions
That's still not a newcomer question, probably #dm-discussion would be more suitable
Thank you
Hello again, I've read up and watched the videos that someone provided yesterday and am still a little confused on the whole thing
Just seems like there's a bunch of information I'm not properly understanding
like what?
Mainly the character creation and distribution between stats and skill.
Basically the character creation sheet as a whole
Have you read the section in the Basic Rules on step-by-step character creation?
?tag new abilities
?tag new skills
Skills
A skill represents a specific aspect of an ability score. Proficiency in a skill lets you add your proficiency bonus to ability checks that involve that skill, making you more likely to succeed.
- Strength. Athletics
- Dexterity. Acrobatics, Sleight of Hand, Stealth
- Constitution. (none)
- Intelligence. Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, Religion
- Wisdom. Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, Survival
- Charisma. Deception, Intimidation, Performance, Persuasion
Write your ability modifier next to each skill for that ability. If you’re proficient with that skill, add your proficiency bonus as well.
Yes, I've read all of the info provided by that guy and watched most of the Handbooker Helper videos except for the last few discussion each different class
So what are you struggling with specifically?
Thanks, understand it a bit better now
Mainly the character creation sheet as a whole
That and how everything meshes together
Sorry if I'm not being clear, I dunno how else to describe it
At what step in the step-by-step character creation do you get stuck?
Just wait, I'll rewatxh and read everything again
Maybe just focus on the step-by-step rules
Have you started your own character sheet? What do you have so far? What are you still missing?
That should take you through the process in a logical order
Search up "character sheet explained 5e" for a quick guide to the sections.
So where do I find a game
#looking-for-players is good if you want to join a game, or #750812887697588356 is for if you want to dm a game
Any channel works
New player looking for a dnd life coach
Unfortunately, this server has FAR too many members for it to be possible for us to offer 1-on-1 lessons to everyone, but if you have any questions at all, feel free to ask them here in this channel. We are all more than happy to help
I know just starting a conversation the best way I can really hoping to find a stable group of players I can click with and eventually join some adventures with ongoing adventures
I understand. Well, if you feel ready to join a group, you can go to the #find-a-game channel for instructions on how.
Thank you
Good day. I'm a new player to TTRPGs (0 experience), could i get some overview of the character im coming up with to see if it has any significant flaws?
#character-discussion can give you a hand with that!
somewhat fishy response, but ill take it :P
Not sure how that's fishy. That's what the channel is there for.
(a joke based on your username)
And one that went right over my head! 🙈
If i wanted to start to dm games where should I start?
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
It helps as DM to familiarize yourself with the rules (but you don't need to memorize them).
That said, head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Hello everyone, me and 2 friends i got have created a server and we're looking forward to playing dnd. But we almost got 0 experience and will appreciate help or a DM
I’d be happy to join if you’d like!
Read #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels (including looking for dms)
Do not try and solicit or organize games outside of the LFG channels - it is off-topic and will be removed.
is strixheaven a book that i must buy on dnd beyond?
You're not forced to buy any book on D&D Beyond. It's an adventure so it's only useful for DMs.
If you want to use the content then yes you need to own the book or be in a campaign with content sharing enabled that has access to the book
yes yes not must but is the which book is strixheaven in? i couldnt find it in the market place unless im just blind
Strixhaven is an adventure (but it's under sourcebooks for some reason...)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/strixhaven-a-curriculum-of-chaos
You have to either own the book in DnDBeyond (or purchase the feats individually) or be in a DnDBeyond campaign with content sharing enabled and access to that book.
Here's the book: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/sacoc
and as a player do you think id only need the feats and backgrounds?
If you want the feats, then yes? Only you can know what you want and whether it's worth purchasing.
Thank you both
This is something you should talk to your DM about since technically feats are optional.
Are you playing Strixhaven? If not, again talk to your DM because they may not allow any Strixhaven feats and backgrounds. (I don't)
Does anyone have any advice on how to get in character? I'm having a lot of problems like freezing up when the DM asks what my character does in certain situations
it can be helpful to establish the following:
- a mannerism or two. Does your character have a stutter? Do they habitually crack their knuckles? Minor things like that can help you get in character.
- does your character have a strong belief? You can start with good/evil/law/chaos/neutrality or the tenets of a deity they worship, and build from there. Is your character a big proponent of wealth redistribution? Bringing order to the wilderness?
- what is a thing or person in the world your character deeply cares about? A loved one, or family heirloom? A title or position they aspire to? Maybe they want to become the greatest swordsman in the realm?
These correspond to personality traits, ideals, and bonds, and along with character flaws you can turn to your character's background or other backgrounds to help come up with ideas. When you think about what your character would do, you can think about how their ideals, bonds, and flaws relate to the situation. And you can use your personality traits to express what exactly your character says or how they do the thing.
Lastly, to help prevent the freezing up problem, you can come up with one or two default approaches to problems. Does your character default to hitting problems as hard as they can with a hammer? Or do they try to take a cautious approach, or talk their way out? This way, if you are having trouble figuring out what to do, you can just go with your default approach.
Thank you so much!
yw! The most important thing, I think, is that an interesting character (1) has a meaningful belief (or code) and (2) cares about something in the world. Focus on those, along with the "default approach"- and work with your DM to develop ideals & bonds that are relevant to the game they're running.
anyone know any lfp groups? or anyone recruiting?
Check #find-a-game
I'm in a CoS campaign so it's a little hard for my character to have pre-existing bonds in Barovia since he's not from there
Yeah, for CoS bonds are going to be more about what motivates your character to keep going. What/who do they want to go back to after the adventure, etc. But you can always make a new bond over the course of the adventure, if your character ends up developing a new attachment or goal in Barovia. None of these aspects of your character need be static.
is there a feat that gives you pool of healing?
Healer, sort of.
Hi
Hi
Welcome!
now, is it against the rules to duel weild sheilds
Nothing in the rules about it per se... just not very good for combat when there's things like area of effect spells that don't always care about armor class
Well actually you can only get the benefit of one shield at a time
fighting a tarrasque
That is in the rules
NOOOOOOO
Oh yeah - there is that too
dang ty
is there a good campaign to watch on yt for beginners? something that i wont lose track of because so much stuff is happening?
You can benefit from only one shield at a time.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ArmorandShields
i listened to a spotify campaign and i really liked it but i cant find anything like it
Not one specifically for beginners but I like the Dungeon Dude's "Dungeons of Drakkenheim" as it's fairly clean (only eldritch horrors, little to no swearing). But it is a homebrew campaign so they do modify some rules and add on additional ones because of the setting and story they are trying to tell.
okay thank you, ill look into it
im finding fate of drakkenheim but not dungeon of drakkenheim
Fate of Drakkenheim is their most recent campaign - it's good but at this point the characters are fairly high level. Let me see if I can find the original campaign
I think this is the best place to start: https://howtogm.guide One of the steps is reading the Basic Rules.
found it
Here we go: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05O1l_x7wym1Th1DTdqiaO0P
This is the first of the Dungeons of Drakkenheim campaign.
ty 🙂
DnDBeyond also had a neat family friendly one-shots that's pretty wholesome - Roll in the Family - here's the first one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xnfQ4KjfSg&pp=ygUcZG5kYmV5b25kIHJvbGwgaW4gdGhlIGZhbWlseQ%3D%3D
Still not a great "how to play D&D according to the official rules" but great at showcasing the freedom available per table/DM discretion and just fun overall.
okay thank you
hello, I'm new in the server and just enter because I want to play dnd. also I just played dnd once
Welcome! Check the pinned message in this channel - ti has useful resources for new-to-D&D folks to help get you started.
Hey I'm not exactly a newcomer but I've been meaning to ask where I can find a game to play with others cuz I never actually *played D&D before

Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
i have read the rules channel, do you mean something else?

i have already played a lot of dnd, if you mean that type of beginners guide
Right, sorry. That's why I asked if you read the Basic Rules. Some new players just want to jump in without knowing how to play the game.
i get it. thank you still. question is: where are new/one shot campaigns posted?
okay, so nothing is hosted since almost 4 weeks ago. but still thanks alot
lots of postings in #looking-for-players
#find-a-game contains the instructions
Is there any newcomers that would like to form a group together to play some modules
Because all the groups I joined didn’t have the beginner atmosphere I hoped for
im new to dnd

Hey guys I'm new and am wanting to learn how to play and I also need help making a character sheet if anyone would be able to help out with that at all
You can check the bot post above for the basic rules, including the step-by-step on character creation
Ok wi it help me out with my specific class
DNDBeyond features all of the classes in the basic rules
Ok
Hello everyone I'm new and I'm Ferret
Which class are you thinking of?
I wanna be bard or rouge
Bard sounds better however
Ah healer bard through the power of music can heal allies
I like that Idea
Don't steal it
That's not a unique idea considering the spells Bard can access and the aesthetic of the Bard class

Yes I know but I'm trying to do a custom wizard dragonborn
And the basic rules include wizard and dragonborn
Yeah but I'm co fused on the system that's why I was hoping to have someone in a couple hours help me run through making one
Hello
I recently started playing like, less than an hour ago and want to know how to make a good campaign and not just "idk" with the caption "chicken sandwich"
Read the free Basic Rules first.
Honestly by have a good imagination see if it were me I'd be using inspiration from games and shit
If it’s your first time DMing, the best approach is to run a pre-written adventure.
this is very vague, what part confuses you?
Is there anyone willing to host a newbie like me to a game T-T

How long does it ussualy take to get a dm to let u play woth them after submiting the form?
There's no standard. They could be at work, asleep, with family or just not checking their gaming messages immediately.
Ok
DnD is not like an MMO where you will drop into a game, it can take a while to find one and then there is some prep work
I see
it requires as much work as getting people to meet up at a specific time, and at a specific place / using a specific program. Because that's what's happening. You need everyone at once
joining my first game is spooky cos i’m not entirely sure what to expect 😀 what if we don’t vibe
also what if i suck at this and they get annoyed 🥲 aaaa
you say "Hey, this isn't for me, but best of luck" and set about finding a new group
You don't have to settle for the first group you find
Oh yeah that makes sense ofc.
however i thought the campaigns were generally quite long and u can’t leave until ur out or it’s done ?
i’m very new haha
You can 100% leave before it's done
The point of D&D is to have fun, and if you're not having fun, you shouldn't play in that game
ohhh good to know thank u
it's just polite to let people know and leave with mutual agreement and grace
Instead, communication
Oh yea for sure
transparent communication is 100% the most powerful thing to improve the quality of life of DND games
If there's something bothering you about the campaign, be it the story, the combat, or the other players, try and discuss it first and seek out a solution
as a DM, I have full well walked back things that the player did that character knowledge would absolutely preclude, when it ends up as "if you do this, it's got this consequence, you'd know this - I'll let you know this before committing"
If a compromise can't be found, there's nothing wrong with saying "This game just isn't for me, so I'm going to step away, but best of luck with the campaign and have fun!"
The number one tip to good D&D is communicate.
will do will do thank u
You can even offer to stick around just long enough to find a good spot for your character to leave, if that works for you
okay that’s a lot more chill than i thought
Hii
I’m super excited for my fist campaign soon, does anyone wanna talk to me about it (idk why sorry I’m just super excited about it for no real reason)
for artificers does replicated magic items count towards active infused items or do you just have them now?
Hello, i'm new on this game. Please be kind to me 🙏
Yes cause it’s an infusing
so to get that slot back you would have to destroy the item, correct?
No, just end it
The feature does what it says
No need to destroy it, and it's not permanent
You can’t just end it you have to infuse another item and it gets rid of the oldest infusion, but I don’t see a problem with ending the infusion n a long rest whilst infusing something else

Hey I’m new to the server and looking to join a game
Welcome. The bot post right above you explains how to find a game in this server
I don’t know what channel I should be watching/posting in to find a game
#find-a-game has the instructions and bot that you will need to use to make a post.
#750812887697588356 is where you make that post (using the bot) to advertise yourself
#looking-for-players is where DMs will post if they want new players, so you can read through the posts in that channel and use the reply thread if any interest you
Oh I got it now thank you so much for your help!
Hey i just joined this server and i was wondering, is there an art channel as im a DM and i like to doodle my party
Yep! #dnd-arts-and-crafts
You can also check out #channel-guide to see all the channels available.
Thanks so much
So I’m new to the discord n have been really interested in getting into it more but every time I bring it up with my friends they don’t wanna take the time to play n I was hoping if anyone knows of good ways to find groups to be able to learn the game more before committing to a long term campaign without much game knowledge
Check #find-a-game for one-shots.

Hello!
Can't wait to learn more abt Dnd :))
You can start by reading the free Basic Rules linked above.
The basic rules and guides/videos linked above are definitely a great place to start, and when you have any questions about what you've read we can help out!
Hey I'm really new to dnd, like I just started playing and making a character is hard for me. Could I get some help?
With?
Have you read the first four chapters of the rules, on step-by-step character creation? What part are you stuck on?

Hey y'all, I'm new here
When it comes to actually. Creating my character should I use the DnD Beyond website or should I use a different method?
Whatever works for you. D&D Beyond is a great tool for walking you through the character creation process, and gives you digital access to your character sheet, but many people prefer pen and paper, or perhaps other digital methods. There are no rules or requirements around this, unless your DM decides that personally. So, you can just use whatever you think will work best for you
Ok, still nee to this whole thing so I'll use the website for now. Is there a way to save it to a PDF from there or no?
Also, how would I know if I've done it right? As in if the character is ready for an adventure and I haven't messed anything up
Yes, there is an option to covert your sheet to a PDF after its made
The basic rules break character creation down into a step-by-step process, so as long as you follow those steps, you should be fine. D&D Beyond will guide you through the process as well. If you still want someone to double check it for you, you can always post your character sheet in #character-discussion on this server to have someone review it for you
Ok, thanks
Will do that

Welcome. If you’re looking to find more ways to play D&D, you can go to #find-a-game for instructions on how to use this server’s looking for game channels.
Evening fellas.
so the cast time for mending is 1 min
but can i cast it multiple times in quick succession
What do you mean by "quick succession"? It takes 1 minute to cast the spell. If you spend that 1 minute, then it is cast. You can start another casting of it immediately afterwards if you wish, but that will take another full 1 minute
thank you
what is the cr limit for a level 5 warlock familiar (I wanna get me a slime)
Pact of the Chain warlock familiars aren't based on CR. Its just a list you can choose from. Slime is not one of the options
There is no rule for “taming”
Therefore it is DM discretion
but it is not something you just do
then familiar
when may i get a slime familiar
There are no available options or rules for getting a slime familiar or taming a slime monster. At most, you would need to choose one of the available stat blocks and reflavor it as a slime creature.
oh
DnDBeyond is just digital tools to help play D&D.
I'm trying to play online I don't know how
To find a game using this server's Looking For Game channels, please read #find-a-game carefully
and I emphasize carefully
Hello, i'm not sure how to ask, so i'll just ask. i'm trying to build a sort of "Time Tracker" for DMs. i have a very basic idea on how to but, i have no experience as a DM (or as a player) so i guess i'd like feedback from someone who would actually use such a tool. i'm not an actual developer, i just wanted an actual project to work towards while i learn. i don't know if this is the right place to ask either 😅 anyway, any questions or comments or whatever would be appreciated
Time tracker for what exactly? How long a game session runs?
If you're advertising a service or product though, please use #dnd-advertisements
@echo kelp it's not advertising, i haven't built anything, and i don't know if i'll be able to yet lol. time tracker as in uh.. like an in-campaign time tracker, like how much time (hours, days, weeks, months, years) has passed in the campaign, does that make sense
Ah! An in-game calendar/timer if you will.
Some folks might like that.
yeah, i was thinking i could use the calendar of Harptos or something like that
That's not to say don't make your thing just because someone else has done it
i know, i'd like to make something free and open source though
maybe cross-platform 😛
anyway, any feedback, like what kind of things would be useful for DMs, related to timetracking, would be useful
also would this be the place to ask? i'm not sure if #dm-discussion would be better 😅
um hi i made a character and would like to experience dnd
If you're ready to find a group to play with, read #find-a-game carefully - and good luck!
That would be a better place to gauge what DMs need/want - but please be careful as we don't allow market research and things like that. This server is for discussion, not for "what do people need in their D&D games" if you will.
uhm so, can i ask what they need want or would that be considered market research? i'm confused 😛
I’d suggest asking to speak with a moderator in #moderator-support to get into what is/isn’t allowed- we should leave this channel open for new to D&D folks to get their questions answered.
Hi how do I get in a group
Thanks
no prob
Hey guys me and my dnd group are running a heist campaign and the DM gave us the option to choose any uncommon magic item so what are some great uncommon magic items that benefit the whole team (other than bag of holding)
Try asking this in #character-discussion - this channel is for new to D&D folks to learn the core rules and mechanics of the game.
Got it sorry didn’t know where exactly to post it and thought here would be fine as I am new
Hello
Hey
how is everyone??
That’s cool
but like its all our first times playing lol
It will be a funny experience for sure
yess it will
hi hi : D
im also trying to learn, i just bought the DM guide and player handbook today ;-;
So how much do experienced DMs cost per hour?

most DMs don't really hire themself out like that
even with paid games, it's more a fee to join the group
Ahh, I have a group I need to hire someone who knows how to play the game.
Someone who can teach newbies and run a very very dumbed down version of the game for the first time.
You might try #paid-looking-for-game
so for my atk bonus would i add proficiency bonus and strength modifier for the damage or just strength modifier
What weapon? If it's melee, then yes, proficiency + strength modifier to get your attack bonus.
If ranged, use dexterity modifier in place of strength modifier.
its a glaive
Then yes, you would use strength modifier
so lets say i roll my 1d10 and its 6. id add 5 to the 6 to deal 11 total damage
Glaive:
Strength Modifier + Proficiency Bonus (if proficient with glaives) for Attack
Strength Modifier for Damage
if i have strength of 3 and prof of 2
so you add +5 to hit and +3 to damage
okay
assuming you're proficient with glaives
so this would be 9 dmg?
you'd do 1d10+3 damage
okay
so if you roll 3, you add 3 to get 6, and so on
okay ty
Would anyone say some roles are harder for newcomers or are all equal?
Spellcasters can be more challenging due to the added spellcasting rules and the array of spell choices the player has to decide on and use.
I would say that Martial Characters are little easier to start with, Casters take some getting use to but I tell everyone to start with a Cleric so you can get use to the mechanic of casting without being a glass cannon.
Don't let that scare you away from playing a wizard if that's what you want to play - passion to play a specific class can help you power through and learn the class.
Would bard be put under the category of spellcasters? Or are they separate
Definitely a spell caster. Bards use magic to solve 75% of their problems and their Perfomance to solve the rest.
I main a Bard, it is my favorite class because of how diverse it is, but there are definitely nuances to it because of the fact that you can choose to go a number of routes. Battle field control, Supporting the Party, Blaster etc.
It sounds like it would be a moderate role not to easy but not to difficult but that's in my opinion
They have the Spellcasting feature, they are spellcasters
Give it a try! I'm positive you can learn it and do well!
Thanks

Hayyoo #looking-for-players or #paid-looking-for-game is always a good place to start.
Are you looking for a dungeon master or players?
you'd use #find-a-game as detailed
Are you looking for experienced players or just anyone?
Gentle reminder to keep any game organization in direct messages or in the propper Looking For Game channels as described in #find-a-game
Don’t forget to have a session 0
Guess it depends
Those are fun
Also super helpful in making a campaign successful.
Hi, I just made my first ever character on Beyond.
I'm looking to see if anybody can give me a few tips.
Make the character public and you can get a shareable link to the character: #optimization can give you some pointers on the mechanics side of the character
Thank you!
Is there a limit to what I can make my character into? Like no quadrupeds or dragons?
using the races presented
so, outside of one ooze race, bipedal and generally human-shaped
When it comes to races there is a fairly huge list, for unique races your best bet is to use custom linage for the mechanics and present your own flavor
Thank you guys I get it now
If want quadrupled, centaur is your only option but you can keep the mechanics but flavor it as something else.
As for dragon, Dragonborn is your best option. There are different types with different effects.
I thought you were looking for players?
Anyone know ravnican server? They are text group westmarch style My old account got hack so I don’t have a way to get back to them
hey everyone
Because there is A LOT that goes into dm
Because every aspect of the game has to be run
the DM decides the setting, the NPCs, the state of the world, the events happening in the world, we do not have AI DMs yet
correct
dnd isn’t a video game. To setup a game takes time and a group of people must agree in a time to meet whether online or in person.
if only things were THAT easy...
dragonborn are typically described as having scales
You can describe your Dragonborn as having fur, or being any colour
Actually I think normally they just slightly reptilian skin
and they're often the color associated with their type, such as gold, red, etc
More like small lizard skin than scaly skin
Alright, ty
some of 'em have facial hair, so why not?
Sorry no they do have scales
Just very fine scales
The closest thing we've got is the prewritten modules, where you can just follow the story. But even then, the DM has to do some planning generally
So no fur?
I just think it'd look cool tbh
You can reflavour them as having fur
Typically they have Scales
But appearance doesn’t really matter so you can say they have Fur if you want
it's not like there's a specific rule about that, so yeah, you can do that
You’ll often hear the phrase flavor is free. The idea is use the mechanics but presenting as something else.
Tysm, i see
i wish i lived in a different time zone, that would make it much easier to find a group to play with...
Have you looked into dnd adventurers league and visiting your local game shops?
because most of the games start at night for me
I’m new to dnd and just wanted to try it out
just don't sleep /s
it kinda helps that i have insomnia, but still, need at least SOME time to sleep
fair. but there is only time for a short rest. you have goblins to slay
Might be worth playing a one shot. See if you enjoy it.
id be so down for a one shot to give it a try
What does that mean?
that's kind of hard to do, because dnd is not very popular in my country, it either cost a lot of money per session (which i don't have) or any of the groups that i know of already filled... sooooo, yeah, that's not a good thing
I just want to hop into a game with someone or a like a group to help me out a little
same honestly
A oneshot is an adventure that takes place in a single session
I'm in a simmilar boat but I wanna dm lol
i mean, if you can find one, i'd be totally up for it too
We have three of you join
Unless the other guy doesn’t want to
dm'ing sounds like so much effort lmao
it actually is
Yeah it’s not easy
How do I join a party?
you have to prepare a lot of stuff prior to the game
I mean.. dm requires anywhere from low effort to infinite effort. you get what you put in to it lol
so much planning outside of sessions
Find people to play with
but, and i mean it, it actually worth the cost
oh yea of course it would be so rewarding seeing your effort turn into entertainment for the party
well... not every single time, but mostly it does
You can try running masters vault on roll20, dnd beyond also has a free one shot.
that's a fair point zero. but I think i'd rather just start with just the rule books and like 2-3 encounters. lol
and i already have to apologise for my bad punctuation and/or grammar, sorry, English is not my first language
Who’s down to run a story in dnd beyond?
id be so down
first time joining such a huge community, looks great here
Ight but we need a dm
sign me up
yeah, whatever makes it easier for you
that's fair
If u want to set up a game you can take it to DM’s or otherwise use #find-a-game
hey newcomers i got a hole group of people willing to take some more new people in
if you guys dont have a group/cant find one
hey where can I find down time activities ?
Xanathar’s guide to everything goes into them in detail
thank you friend
yo did ya'll make a group?
jay i got a group if you need one
mhm maybe can you dm me some more info?
Tsuki, Grongo, Melkor, I'll see if I can help you out
Hi
Hi
hey
I have no idea where to start “hi” seemed appropriate
New to DND, I assume?
Hello! I’m and not a newcomer per say but I don’t know how discord works and would like to participate in a campaign. This seemed like a good place to start

We might have something
Me and a buddy getting some people together for at least a one shot we will see where it goes
If you want to try it out
Um how long would it take?
What do you mean?
Like days or hours in my experience one shots usually are in a day but a few hours long
Plans to do it tonight
