Yes
Man I love that guy.. he's cool
Alright give me 5 mins to switch to my desk and I can answer some questions you may have and point you to some things that can make it easier learn how to play.
In 5 mins already?
I'm in a match rn
Priorities...
Thank you for your comment
Then for now I'll point you I'll point you towards the free Player's Quick Combat Guide From Adam Hancock on the dmsguild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/214803/Players-Quick-Combat-Guide
It's good visual guide that helps digest how combat works.
As for character creation, your best best is to make it on the character creator on dnd beyond.
As for games to gain experience, I'd recommend D&D adventures league. Which is a community campaign that allows people to play in single 2-4 hour long sessions at a time. The benefit is that you can play as often as you're able to. The cost is, this DMs can't incorporate any character backstory you created into the session.
That and homebrew (things not in official books) are not allowed.
hey! im tryna set up beyond20 for a campaign on roll20. I think I got it I was just wondering if anyone could help me with a couple questions?
Imma go throught it, thanks! ❤️
sweet! thanks:) So im pretty new to roll20. So the UI makes no sense to me. Ive got beyond20 working so when in the chat box on roll20 it shows up when i roll on dndbeyond. Is that all beyond20 is? or do i also have to attach a character sheet to roll20 and tokens aligned with dndbeyond and stuff?
if that makes sense
#third-party is a better place to ask about Roll20
okay, sorry ahah. Ill swap over to that channel
If you like I can hop on a screen share call and walk you through the process.
o/
I've been studying some stuff and I'm kind of confused. I think to learn more I need to just jump into the game but I really dont wanna bother anyone =.=
Because I know I dont know enough and there are too many options to decide
Have you read through the free basic rules? (see pinned messages in the channel)
looking at it now
You don't have to know it all or memorize it all - but being familiar with how a character sheet works and how combat works will help you with playing D&D.
oh yeah red the basic rules started reading through content watched handbooker helper
Ig, I think the main thing i need to lay my hands on is the character creation process, I mean I believe it would be just fine if i just tried jumping right into it I guess Id function, but perhaps there are some unwritten common knoweledge. Should I just ask DM for help when I find one, im not sure if there would be people willing to help with that, also is it purely dependant on a campaign?
You can - but you may want to have 2-3 lose character concepts/builds that you can then work with the DM and group to flesh out and polish up for the kind of D&D game you'll be playing.
And learning how to build a character and understand a charactersheet will help a lot.
so usually people get to know what kind of character they would need when they already have a party and DM knows what kind of setting the campaign will be in then we make a choice of what to create for that campaign, am I understanding correctly?
So yeah - folks figure out what kind of D&D game they want to play and may discuss general themes of the game and what's allowed/not allowed. Then they may work together on building characters based on that or they may build their own characters on their own but still based on the info.
I guess most of things I have figgured out. Now I can try find some people who would find a place for a newb I have way too much time so if theres something basic that I still dont know I'll be able to catch up
Most groups are fine taking on a new to D&D player (we've all been a new D&D player!). What most folks care about is that you're willing to learn (e.g. they like it when you show effort at reading and trying to understand the rules) and that you vibe well with the group.
They don't expect you to know everything or to memorize the rules
I've been playing this game for years and I still mess stuff up - it's okay. It's a game and a game is supposed to be fun.

Hello! I’m completely new to dnd as in I’ve never been part of a campaign. But me and some of my friends from school want to try it out. I know some of the basic things like the roles that each person has to be (dm and players), but as for everything else I’m having some trouble understanding it, somewhere online someone recommended to get discord and ask here, sooo that’s what I’m doing now
I just got some questions about certain things that I didn’t really get from reading the instruction manual
What questions do you have?
So like for the movement
Does the story just force the players of the campaign to where ever they need to go
Because I’ve seen some people play with grid paper and maps
So those are kind of two different topics.
'battlemaps' and the general plot are two distinct things
Yep.
the only time maps are really needed is for when it matters - the map of the continent / kingdom / city / dungeon / local area where you're fighting bandits named Barry Larry and Terry over some coins
With battlemaps, the player chooses where to move their character's minirature(or token in a virtual table top). Though, during combat their the distance they can move is limited to their movement speed.
you can think of dnd as having two "modes": exploration/narrative, where movement is much more freeform, so you'd just say "hey, i want to go to the shop" or something like that, and your dm would normally just let you. Then there's combat mode, where battlemaps are generally used. There, things are turn based, and you can move a set amount on your turn- generally somewhere around 30 feet, or 6 squares on most battlemaps
Are battlemaps required in combat?
But yeah DND is a TTRPG, tabletop roleplaying game
With a game master running the game, it means you can actually just say anything to anyone - but then the GM just hands out consequences for what you say.
Within the capabilities of your character, you can do anything. But as much as you can do anything, anything can happen back at you as consequence.
Because videogames are coded, scripted, but the tabletop games can have improvisation happen. A conversation is more engaging as you're actually thinking of and saying those words, not just picking one of three options that then alters a karma point system that dictates what voicelines come out of your character. You decide your intentions, you say the exact words you want
no
Not required, but often enjoyed. Theater of the Mind is used a noticeable amount
you can use "theatre of the mind"- basically just imagining in your head where everyone is
that require more work on the dm's part tho, adjudacating how everyone is relative to each other
Ah ok
Some like battle maps because it helps them visually keep track of whats happening but it's all about preference.
You don't necessarily need a map for encountering a body in the woods. You need a map when the tactics of taking cover behind trees, being surrounded by enemies, or specific AOE's and battle formation tactics, begin to matter.
So you don't need a battlemap for a basic conversation, or 'someone got ambushed in an alleyway', to a degree.
So for the other mode, the narrative one. How does that one work, and what if it gives the players to much freedom and they do not remain focused on the story, do you have to sort of force the players to certain destinations to keep the story going or do you have to improvise the path of the story depending on each decision?
no, forcing players to go where you want is very bad practice
generally, improvise what happens based on where they want to go
you can run it like an open world
set out a world map, put things around it
ofc you can always guide them by putting enticing things at certain places, and depending on the group they may naturally gravitate towards just chasing the story
Generally, a character's backstory or the general campaign villainy will provide directions for the party to go towards
Having a "quest" to pursue is always nice, and players will probably want a goal to seek
One more question ab the movement, let’s say that the players are in one point of the map and their objective is on another point of the map, how do they choose to move?
If it's "looking at the map of the world", they decide to travel. They can get methods of transportation to go faster, though.
If it's "during combat", they can move on their turn - each creature has Speed, which lets them move that far on their turn.
in narrative play? they just say they want to go there, and maybe what route they take and whether they walk or use a horse, and you adjudicate how long it might take
and you might put some random encounters along the route
Ahhh ook
But yeah, the rules are much more for "how much damage does something do" than "how does someone decide to move from one town to the next"
In general, the talking and the "we decide to travel to the next town" is just, the over-table talk
When it comes to "who wins in a fight" or "is this person capable of figuring this out", that's when statistics come into play
some races have a fly speed swim speed or climb speed as well
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#Movement have a look at this
If you’re worried about something like that happening you can bring up that concern at session 0.
This can be done by letting players know that the characters created should be compatible with the setting or tone of the campaign.
For example a character that has a family, owns a jewelry shop in town, and loves hanging out with their community can be great in a campaign where the town is about to be attacked by bandits and a dragon.
Not so much, if the campaign is about traveling to different countries around the world.
Ok one more question
feel free to ask away, this is the channel for it
your new ask all the questions you want
These questions have been things outside of "what does strength do" and such, more the abstract of "how does a game like this play", which is fine
These aren't things we just point to a rule for, for the most part
it's entirely fine to ask
Since my friends are also new to dnd, as the players of the campaign what are some basics they should start learning?
mainly, how combat works, how to make a character, and what their character can do
What their character sheets do, how combat works
and one of the most important things: Things do what they say.
This can help.
if you have more questions feel free to ask

helloooooo
Hi
Hi
Is a visual representation of combat necessary? ie., boards or virtual boards of combat situations.
You can use theatre of the mind.
Hey, I am kinda new into d&d and im also a dm (me and friends started a group and we are all new).
We have our first session in a week, how do you place them in a new world? Like do they just happen to meet each other, do they have history, did they lose their consciousness and are slowly regaining it?
whatever works
Some popular options
- "You meet in a tavern" - the player characters all have business in the same tavern and events bring them together. This works because taverns would be natural meeting places for strangers
- "En media res" - basically you open in the middle of the action and the players are thrown together as the drama transpires. Maybe orc bandits are attacking and the players are fighting them off and that's when they decide they work well together
- "You have history" - the PCs all know each other and have been a party for some time before the campaign starts
You can always chat with the group how they'd like to handle it too.
I like for my games doing 'Cameo' type backgrounds, where each person says how their PC knows one other PC in the party. Could be they worked together, or ran into each other in a similar situation, or are even rivals. But the idea being that there is some connection between the group to work on.
Or you can try and make the start of the game their first meeting, and might want to chat with each player about what brought their PC there to that situation.
Or even the 'three rumours' type background, where each PC has three rumours that the others might have heard about them. They can be all true or all false, and ideally two positive and 1 neutral/negative.
Hello I am a new player.
I just ordered the 3 core books and I want to play with my friends.
Please give me some advice to how and what to play.
Me and my friends are all new players so I am open for advice on DM and player related things.
Grab a free adventure from dndbeyond or a one shot like wild sheep chase
in what way do the levels of an artificer say what they can and cannot build
allo
their Infuse Item feature
Well, Here
Specifically, Infuse Item
okay let me say something that wil be hard to answer
how do I build a titan.
as far as I know I will need 1 million gold just for the money part
Can you clarify what you mean? A “Titan” is not a defined game mechanic or creature type.
Do just mean you want to build a giant robot?
I want to build a titan-sized mech and hide it in a mountain
There is no game mechanic that will cover that, or directly allow you to do so. This would be something you’d handle in game. Your DM is the one who will determine if it’s possible and what rules it will use (if any)
That's more... "ancient civilization of ultra mega wizards worked for years to make a big robot" and not "one artificer in their off-time"
…what?
1 day in the normal world is 10000 years in the astral plane
a Warforged Colossus was churned out by the 'war machine' of an entire nation in a setting with artifice being a huge thing, in the midst of a big war. Big robots are big investments, not enough for a lone player
there's no set rules as for time
yes but I can build it in the astral plane
and then somehow transfer it to the mortal realm
there is no degredation in the astral plane as well so that means it will be nice and fresh once I bring it back
and 0 time would have passed
I’m not familiar with any rule or piece of text that states this. I don’t think this is correct.
no, what sourcebook
The forgotten realms wiki combines the lore of every edition of D&D in one place. It is not accurate to the rules of 5e
what book are you taking that claim from
no book
no credence
I was told forgotten realms is a good place to go for information
It’s not
The rules of D&D come from rule books. If it’s not in a book, then it’s not part of the (current) game
so everything on the forgotten realms doesn't apply?
I wouldn’t say everything there is automatically inaccurate. You just have no way of knowing whether it’s accurate or not. Nothing in there is an official rule of the game.
so is there ANY official stuff about the astral plane?
The rule books “dungeon master’s guide” and “Spelljammer: Adventures in Space”
Hello. I am a total noob but is very much interested in experiencing D&D. I am very much interested but never got the chance to play since no one plays this in my neighborhood. Please let me in on the fun 😦
I'll be honest, I dont think I have the will to read an entire book to learn this. But if it is possible to learn this along the way, I would very much appreciate if someone would be patient enough to help me. I am a Magic The Gathering player so I believe I at least have the capability to learn this. Thanks for anyone who will let me experience the fun
You have misunderstood the quote
Time in the Astral flowed at the same rate on a Prime Material plane but the effects of time were slowed almost to a stop―a thousand years in the Astral plane felt like only a day to the traveler
If you would like to dive into this more, we have #dnd-lore

Hey. Our DM is doing a one shot tomorrow and it's festive themed. He's tood us we need to create level 10 characters for it, is that normal? Does it make it particularly harder to make the character? I'm guessing there's more feats to pick at least.
It's pretty normal to make higher level characters for one shots, yeah
As for being harder, it can be as you have to go through the entire process of making a character and levelling them up 9 times
It's a little more complicated but I wouldn't say it's substantially harder to do.
If you're a spell caster, there's a lot more to review and pick from (nature of magic in the game) - but there's a lot of "guides" available if you find yourself paralyzed by how many options there are.
And equivalent equipment for a PC of that lvl too
Hello everyone! I would like to have someone teach me how to play dnd, been interested for a long time, thanks!
Have you looked at the basic rules?
no... :/ where do i find those?

☝️ It's the second link there, plus some other helpful things to get you started.
But if you've got any specific questions, feel free to ask!
PC?
Player character
Thanks!
Is there someone willing to play with a beginner to teach me?
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
A lot of them are beginner-friendly, even if they're not explicitly advertised that way.
So if you see one you're interested in, can't hurt to ask.
Buuuut there's a lot more players than DMs, so it can take some time to find a spot.
And learning what you can ahead of time can increase your chances of getting accepted.
For questions you can always reach out towards people in here
There is no one there
What do you mean?
Questions about dnd/gameplay and idea wise
I have a question
If a player wants to try to catch something that's being throwned
Is it acrobatics or athletics or neither
What's the "something"?
Like a ball or a bag of something
The DM will ask for which skill to use, probably Acrobatics or Sleight of Hand (their call).
You're not going to catch projectile weapons (like arrows) unless you're a monk.
Are you talking about in combat?
Yea
DM's call.
Ok
5E rules doesn't cover every specific thing that can happen so it's up to the DM to decide.
Then this would be a #dm-discussion topic.
Oh ok
Yeah, I know. Like I said, #find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
The actual games are posted in other channels, as explained in #find-a-game.
Hello people, I'm completely new to DnD and would like to know everything there is about it. Should I just youtube or is there someone or something here that could help me learn ^^ Thank you!

That Handbooker Helper link is good if you'd prefer something on YouTube.
But if you've got any specific questions, ask away!
I've watched atleast 10 videos by now I dony understand what most of the charecter sheet does...
Did you watch the Critical Role's Handbooker Helper tutorial series on Youtube?
No...
It's linked above.
Alr
Is there a specific part of the character sheet you have questions about?
Or Google this up: dnd character sheet explained
I only just worked out a race to be fair
Making a character on dnd beyond can also make things easier for newcomers.
Critical Role's Handbooker Helper is very good at explaining the fundamentals of the game for new players.
There's also a version on this page (scroll down) with explanatory text boxes that may be helpful: https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources
New players should understand the math behind their characters. D&D Beyond does it for you but you should learn why and how the math works.
All the races I want I have to buy so I'm going old school and printed a sheet
If you join a table, DMs typically share their physical/digital books with their players.
It's my m8s dad's so yea he's all physical 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
Ik what race I want anyway but I have no idea what anything else does besides inventory with to be fair is rather self explanatory
Hello
Hi
I dont know anything about DnD
Same lol
And I'd like to know more

Oh well
Wish I could help I have a blank character sheet and I'm just spinning in my chair
The first things you need for a character sheet are a race, class, and background. Do you have all those?
I have a race
So pick a class and a background.
Will do
heya!:))
You have the option to buy individual races , which can cost you $2.
Even if you decide not to buy anything because you have the physical books, it can help walk you through the character creation process.
For new players fighter, monk, and barbarian are very straight forward.
Spellcasting can be difficult to wrap your head around for a new player. Not to dissuade you from it if you want to play a spellcaster, just letting you know what you're getting into
Yea I'll go barb
There's some extra rules to keep in mind, and they can sometimes be overwhelming for someone just starting to learn the rules
Look up handbooker helper barbarian on YouTube , that’s a good short video.
Will do
so Im new, like fetus new :)) one of my fav toobers made a vid on d&d and it looked fun! I did do some scrounging around and found roll20 and made a character sheet- I dont have the players handbook though because uh- coughs in I have no job so I wanted to learn! I tried playng on roll20 but uh it looked way to confusing and I am but stupid child so :))
I recommend starting here.
I'd put level 1, unless your DM has told you to start higher.
We all agreed lvl 1
The Basic Rules have a lot of the information from the PHB. Enough to get you playing, anyway.
Be sure to check out all the pinned messages in this channel. There's a lot of great resources there for new players.
What do I put for background I only see paragraphs as examples and I have a line for it
List of backgrounds can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Acolyte
Stats and equipment
Barbarian starting equipment is found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Equipment
You can also follow the step by step instructions https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
OK!
Hey I'm confused some told me to put all my equipment in the equipment but I put it in attacks and spell casting??
Like swords and stuff
your attacks are probably automatically filled in there
Im doing it on paper
oh
Yea
You may want them in both.
Ah cheers
If you have a longsword in your equipment then write down "longsword" under Attacks and its attack bonus and damage.
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores, determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Ain't done ability yet I'll just fo standard array
Here is an example barbarian if you want to use it as a reference point: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/114518080/xQN2Wk
Right I did 15 on strength 12 on dexterity 8 on constitution 10 on Intel 14 on wisdom and 13 on charisma
How is that?
FWIW, the quick build for a barbarian suggests this:
First, put your highest ability score in Strength, followed by Constitution.
Oop I'll get a rubber
Constitution directly affects your maximum hit points, which is critical for a front-line fighter like a barbarian.
Brb
You probably also want to prioritize dexterity to improve your unarmored defense.
So I'd put STR, CON, and DEX as the top three.
The rest can go in whatever order you like.
What race did you pick?
there's a valid argument for WIS over DEX, since attacks will often have advantage against you anyways and you really don't like failing wisdom saving throws
AC and initiative
Alr
If you're making liberal use of Reckless Attack, yeah.
I'll just swap wis and con around then
Can someone explain me how disengage works?
You take it as an action, and then you don't provoke opportunity attacks for that turn.
Pretty much does what it is says.
Oh ok
If you take the Disengage action, your movement doesn't provoke opportunity attacks for the rest of the turn.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Disengage
Wait so at what level
Any level
Do rogues get it
Literally any creature can disengage.
hi
Everyone can use the disengage action.
A 2nd level rogue can disengage as a bonus action instead.
Thanks to their Cunning Action feature.
If that's how they want to spend their bonus action, yeah.
Hello I'm new
You can take a bonus action on each of your turns in combat. This action can be used only to take the Dash, Disengage, or Hide action.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/rogue#CunningAction-345
I'd like to know what articles should I read to start playing

Rogues are skirmishers. They're built to get in and get out.
Ty
Yep. Rouges can lean into hit in run tactics where they can move in to attack with a dagger or rapier.
However they don’t have a lot oh HP so they are kind of like a glass cannon.
They can deal a lot of damage but can’t take a lot of damage.
I have a friend who plays a rogue she's level 1 and she has 10 hp
Isn't it a lot for level 1
My sorcerer player is
At level 1, PCs start with max hit points.
She probably didn't put anything into CON and paid the price. 😅
You hate to see it.
Barbarians can start quite tanky, especially if you use a variant human and take the tough feat. Can start with 17 hp.
Well the only classes that gain from having high int are wizards, artificers, and rouges if they’re going to be arcane tricksters.
What is the best class to play
I mean in roleplay
I MEAN
When you roleplay in dnd I think bards are the best
It really depends on the individual, any class can be great for role play.
Hello friends
Take a scenario, in which the party has townsfolk who are preparing for a bandit raid that’s coming in a few days.
The fighter could focus on teaching people how to use weapons properly.
The monk can teach how to meditate and be calm in high stress situations.
The barbarian can help move heavy objects to help make barricades for cover.
You can get very creative and lean into the aspects that makes each class unique.
So how do I go about the proper steps of I guess starting things?

Alright I'll do that
Critical Role is the group that has Mathew Mercer and Travis right?
Yes.
Anyone know a good magical item for a halfling Rouge?
Depends on your level and what your DM allows.
Lvl 1 and unsure since it's a discord server
Boots of Speed are never a bad option, or Stone of Good Luck for something lower level.
Level 1 PCs almost always start with no magic items.
Your DM said you start with a magic item at level 1?
Safe to assume the DM’s allowing high power level.
I assume nothing, hence my question above.
I'll read the server rules again to see
Ask your DM.
gloves of thievery, boots of elvenkind, cloak of protection.. a +1 weapon perhaps.
Cloak of Elvenkind’s gotta be up there too.
Yep lvl 1
What’s the rarity restriction?
Unsure I don't believe it clarifies.... all it says is magical item. Worst they can tell me is I can't use it and I'll just change it lol
Level 1 shouldn't have access to magic items, probably Common rarity at best.
But that's your DM's table...
Get the Orb of Annihilation and have fun then lmao
Again, "Ask Your DM" [tm]
Does it sound as fun as it's name suggest? I assume it annihilates others easily?
Please don't tease the new player...
I’m more joking. It’s an artifact, so it’s a campaign villain / 20th level kind of thing.
Realistically, I think Cloak of Elvenkind would be the best for you, since it makes it way easier for you to hide.
Let's give them realistic expectations of the game.
Ah ok I guess I'll take that. I assume it's a common Magic item?
No...
Most of these suggestions are Uncommon or Rare rarity.
Which SHOULDN'T be given to level 1 PCs.
What would be a common one?
Potion of Healing is Common rarity
It’s uncommon, it’s worth asking your DM about it.
Let me take a quick look through the commons for you.
Thanks
Common rarity magic items (again, talk to your DM what's allowed)

The Masque Charm could be nice, since it lets you disguise yourself once a day.
The Clockwork Amulet is also good at low levels.
Ah nice
When someone says Stat Method used they're referring to how I got my stats right?
As a rogue, you’ll have a good attack bonus from the get-go, so the amulet would basically guarantee a hit for you if it’s an important one. While the Masque Charm should be better for sneaking around where there are lots of people.
Rolling, Standard Array, or Point Buy
Yeah, there are three types, as he just said.
I heard Rouges are pretty squishy.... would it be better to take healing, protection or go full glass cannon?
Most DMs would want to witness rolling.
They just want a link
They’re squishy at the start, but they get very difficult to kill as you level.
To...?
The roll as evidence
But protection would be my choice. When given the choice between healing damage and preventing it, you should (almost) always take prevention.
So point buy is the best way and I can choose my own stats pretty much?
Ya was kinda thinking that later on I could go for Items less about protection and more about what I specialize in right?
Yes. You increase/decrease the stats with the lowest being 8 and the highest being 15 before racial modifiers.
Eeyup, find stuff you find cool and have fun.
I think I just went with the generic Rouge halfling stats provided in the main dnd beyond
Since it's my first playthrough
What Dexterity score do you start with?
Let me just list all the stats right quick
Sure, thanks.
8 strength
16 dex
Con 12
Int 13
Wisdom 10
Charisma 16
It is I who should be thanking you 🙏
That looks pretty okay. I would recommend moving 3 Int over to make 14 Con, if you’re using point buy. You only really need Dex and some Con as a rogue, but as a Halfling, being charismatic is a nice plus.
We could go into the gritty of optimising stats, but for your first game, that looks ideal.
Ah, don’t mention it. We were all new once.
So 10 int and 15 con?
Also Con is health right?
14, since with point buy, putting a stat up to 14 or 15 costs an extra point. It has some weird maths stuff to it. Try this: https://chicken-dinner.com/5e/5e-point-buy.html
Con dictates your hit points, your concentration checks (keeping certain spells active after being damaged), and Con saves to avoid being poisoned (and other things, but usually poison).
As a rule, try not to go below 14 Con until you’re experienced enough to know otherwise.
I was wondering about that
I think I'm a scout halfling so I'm resistant to poison I do believe
Ahh, I see. Lightfoot may be better for you, depending on what you like, but Stout is also good.
Oh I'll have to look into lightfoot
Okay, apparently my phone wanted to send those stupid unicorn things so now my message isn’t sending.
Np
TL;DR: Check out the subclasses, Swashbuckler is fun, Lightfoot stats would be best as 8 / 16 / 14 / 10 / 10 / 16
Stout has some awkward spreads, since you only get a boost to your modifier every two stat levels, so 17 Con is effectively the same as a 16, for example.
I fixed it to lightfoot
Ah ok that makes sense
Yeah they said I can only pick Common magical weapons.
They also suggested moon touched weapon. Whats that?
@next estuary When someone casts a spell that requires the enemy to make a saving throw, the target must roll a D20
The number they need to beat is the caster's Spell Save DC. If the caster is a player, this number will be on their character sheet
The target rolls their d20, adds the modifer for the type of saving throw it is. So if they have +1 dex, they add +1 to their roll.
Also, if the target is proficient in that saving throw, you can add their proficiency bonus to the roll as well. Though if its a monster with a monster stat block, if they are proficient in that saving throw it will list the total of what you add to the roll, rather than the individual pieces.
Ok. I think I get it now.
The sorcerer cast Burning Hands, and have a Spell DC of 13.
Burning Hand requires a dex save, and the NPC who got hit, have +1 dex. So they need to roll 12 to pass it (halves the damage).
How do I see if NPCs are proficient?
It’s a sword that also glows. It has the benefit of being a magical weapon for overcoming magical resistance, but you don’t need to worry about that at 1st level.
most monsters aren't proficient in any saving throws. If they are, their stat block lists their total bonus for the saving throw.
It will be listed in their stat block, right under their ability scores
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/17070-young-bronze-dragon
In this stat block, for a Young Bronze Dragon, you can see a section called "Saving Throws" and what you should add to each of them. Only a select few monsters have this, however
I see. Thanks!
So for example, this dragon has +0 dex mod, but they are proficient in dex saves, so they get to add +3 to them anyways. So they would only need to roll a 10 on their d20 to beat the spell save DC of 13 you previously mentioned
Ok. I get it. Thanks 🙂
my pleasure
Hiii
I have some questions cuz im new to dnd
Ask away! We're happy to help
I think i know some basic mechanics, but rn i wanted to ask abt the roles etc
i choose pride but idk what that even means xD
That’s a discord function
Go to id:customize for the server related stuff.
"pride" is a shorten form of the term "gay pride" and the role is just used as a way to show support to the LGBT community, whether you are a part of it or not
In terms of like the concept or gameplay?
Gameplay?
As in spells, stats, Etc
Wizards can know all wizard spells but they have to discover them via spell scrolls and spellbooks and then learn from them.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Wizard
Sorcerers innately know sorcerer spells but have fewer spells in their spell list.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Sorcerer
Warlocks have even fewer spell slots but have invocations to make up for it.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Warlock
Thysm, gonna go read it rn
Lore wise:
- Sorcerer is someone who is born with magic and it exists as a part of them
- Wizard is someone who studies magic academically and enhances their abilities through learning
- Warlock is someone who made a pact with a powerful entity to be granted their power in exchange for something
Gameplay wise:
- Sorcerers focus on an ability called "metamagic" which lets them modify the effects and properties of their magic to customize their own spells
- Wizards have a spellbook that they add spells to, and if they find spell scrolls during their adventure, they can add spells to that spellbook, which means they will have the most number of spells of any class
- Warlocks use "pact magic" as apposed to normal spellcasting, which gives them far fewer spell slots than normal, but they recover those spell slots on a short rest, which means they can keep opperating at maximum power for longer periods of time, if they can rest between battles

(for some reason I don't see the Wizard Quick Build video)
It was unlisted at some point, and they never reuploaded it
I came here beacuse I liked bg3 😄
Welcome
Welcome
But be prepared to set aside much of your BG3 knowledge as it is not the same game as D&D
Yes I am looking something different from what I see in BG3
Hello everyone
Hey!
Hiya
What’s up?
Hi
Hi
I need help with the skills of my character
All that about intelligence dexterity. Etc
I don't know how that works
Ability Scores decide alot of things
Do you wanna know what they do or what they mean or what?
I know that the Abilities help you with throws realted to then
Like if you have a lot of strength ej: +3 in throws that require strenght
Right?
?tag new abilities
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Ty
Ability score determines ability modifiers yep.
So every two points above 10 is a +1.
So 10-11 is +0, 12-13 is +1, 14-15 is +2 so on.
So if you have 16 strength you can add +3 to any roll that uses your strength (like some attack rolls, or athletic checks) so on.
I would recommend starting with the ones from either the Starter Set or Essentials Kit. They're written for new players and DMs in mind.
The DM has to read the adventure and prepare it before the first session.
the online version not having a bot for dm is stinky
Online or in person, the DM needs to prep
D&D is not really a pickup game like a video game. There’s a fair amount of prep work needed by both players and DM
Online could be a simple as voice chat over Discord or as complex as using a virtual tabletop (VTT) with voice chat.
For my games I prepare weeks in advance.
You can use free ones like owlbear.rodeo and Roll20. Both use web browers.
Again the DM should spend time preparing the game before the first session. They are in charge/host of the game essentially.
hi all new to DnD
hi
same here! I joiend this server knowing a solid bit about dnd, but never really having played it myself
where do I find out new stuff, maybe find a campaign with other newcomers?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
I've done a bunch of baldur's gate 3, but obviously theres a lot of differences between that and dnd
^ recommend checking out the free basic rules, maybe watch some folks playing D&D (YouTube or Twitch - look for D&D liveplay) and then maybe try your hand at making a character sheet or two. Then find a group (read #find-a-game for more info on how to use our LFG channels) and start playing!
😄 thanks!
You don't have to know everything or memorize the rules but knowing how a character sheet works and teh core game mechanics of skill checks, attack rolls, and damage rolls is very useful.
I've actually listened to Tales Of a Stinky Dragon on spotify so I have one bit of past knowledge from that
also, since I've played bg3, I know (mostly) about the basics, like attack rolls and skill checks, but of course relearning never hurt

There we go! Thanks!
It can be useful in helping to translate "how things work in BG3 the video game" to "how things work in D&D the TTRPG"
wow, that was great! lol
didn't exactly learn anything, but I'm looking forward to making a character!
see, I've made a couple characters before (mostly in D&D Beyond). I'm just not sure what to chose when it comes to what the DM allows, like multiclassing or encumberment.
the main thing I'd like to get out of this server today is a taste of dnd, even if not an actual campaign
So generally have some loose character concepts and then work with your DM and group to tailor one of them to fit whatever kind of D&D game the group will be running. You may also need to redo the stats based on what the DM allows at the table or how they decide they want the group to generate their stats.
👍 so where do I find a DM/other players? im guessing theres a channel
I'd first recommend reading #find-a-game (carefully) as it explains how to use our LFG channels.
I'd also suggest spreading your search wide (check Roll20, Demiplane, other RPG forums/sites, your local library and gameshops, etc.) Also be patient - D&D is a social game invoving getting a bunch of folks schedules aligned (as well as personalities - not everyone is a good fit for a particular D&D group or the type of game they are choosing to run).
alright, final question I think. what are some of the main dnd involved websites? I've heard of owlbear rodeo, roll20, and others
So Owlbear.rodeo, Roll20 and FoundryVTT provide Virtual Tabletop tools - ways to show maps and tokens.
They are not specifically D&D - but they can be used to play D&D
cool!
DnDBeyond is D&D's official digital toolkit and they do provide a mobile app, online character sheet tool, digital book access, encounter builder tool, shared dice roll logs, and a Discord bot called Avare that can let you connect your DnDBeyond sheet into Discord and roll dice and lots of other neat features via commands on Discord. See #ddb-avrae-help for more info.
thanks for being so helpful!
No problem! Welcome to the wonderful game of D&D! I hope you find a great group and have lots of fun with the game!
😄
Out of pure boredom I decided use chat gpt to play DND where chat gpt was dm, and to my surprise giving chatgpt very little information on what I am looking for, the ai did a pretty good job on its campaign.
AI sucks because it's not actually intelligent. It won't remember things that happend two prompts ago.
hi i'm new to D&D and was wondering if anyone would be willing to teach me?

ok
Nobody is expected to ever memorize the rules, but knowing where to look if you need to figure out how to rule something is immensely useful
Hulloo
hello
hey newplayer here never played before and dont really know much about it im going to read the rules and if after that anyone could help me on how to find people to play with that would be great! (online pls)

oh wow that was fast Thank you!
Is GM and DM interchangable?
dungeon master usually refers to dnd while game master might refer to dnd or somethign else
but roughly yes theyre pretty interchangable if you keep it to dnd
DM is the trademarked (iirc) dnd term for a GM
DM = Dungeon Master = Specific term for someone who runs a D&D game
GM = Game Master = One of the generic terms for someone who runs a tabletop roleplaying game
Other TTRPGs have their own terms, like Story Teller or Lorekeeper etc, but DM is the D&D specific title
Ah thanks all, great info. Or group is playing DnD and Pathfinder and I've noticed the term has changed between the two. Thank you!
wassup everyone literally just got into dnd today need help with EVERYTHING any help would be appreciated

hey ppl \ * - * /
Whatever sounds fun for you and works well for your group/game that you're playing with
had first dnd session yesterday. I survived. but I only filled in so I dont think it was the most authentic dnd experience. But I have another campaign to do aswell since the last night one wasn't in my plans originally. It made me look up things, in third party options aswell, and I already know Ill be a homebrew maniac, that would just mean that Ill better need to find DMs that would be very much of my teammate on that one and would be generous with time and thinking power figuring out what wouldnt break their games, and wouldnt flat out gatekeep. But yeah this is where the ambition of an inexperienced and madness of a fool leads you * - *
The only real caveat is "not Small sized"
Hello hello, I came here for some help and also play DnD some time, my question is where do I find like specifications of races and what classes do they tend to? And the basics of DnD since I am very much new to DnD, sorry if my english is bad, it's not my first language.
I would strongly suggest getting a grasp on the official content before delving into homebrew which is…inconsistent in quality at best and places a burden on the DM balance
The basic rules are free and available in a link in the pinned messages in this channel
They contain a limited selection of races and almost all of the classes, but limited subclasses
To access more official content, you’ll need to purchase books
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

Is there any official content online though?
See the links above, starting with the basic rules
The free basic rules are free and online - and all you need to get started.
Alright, thanks for the help.
All official content is available “online” in the official books, which can be purchased digitally
So basically buying a book online?
roughly yes
Do I require a D&D book to get into DnD?
you do not require it to get into dnd as the basic rules are online
The only book that is "Needed" is phb
But even then its mostly playable without
Ill dm you some places to buy the pdf
I rarely buy anything online.
Oh btw what or how do I make a character sheet?
I also Dmd you some tips on that
But i suggest making your first character with dnd beyond and then using the pdf when you have a better grasp on the rules
You can't buy a PDF of any official D&D book
Also looking through the races in DnD, any recommendations on races that fit the Druid class? Beside the Elf since it feels generic.
No basic rules are free, PHB is just extra race and class options
I thought you could get them through dnd beyond
It's not a PDF
Only character options?
I think maybe you're misunderstanding what a PDF is and what DDB offers
D&D Beyond lets you buy a digital version of the books, but not in the PDF file format
I thought pdfs were digital books?
I thought digital books are from hosting services?
No, it's a specific type of file, one that D&D Beyond does not offer
D&D Beyond offers the books in digital format, either through the website, or via the mobile app
oh
For example, Basic Rules
Which is not the same as a PDF, such as the free Peril in Pinebrook PDF adventure for younger players
Oh this loooks like it could help me, thx.
Is there online dices btw? I cannot bother buying a 20d online.
Wait thats a stupid question nvm sorry
Dndbeyond has dice on it
There are also dice websites
I can just use a number generator right?
online dice doesnt replace rolling your own dice
Yes but are better for online as no cheating
Ahh yes but real dice cost money
Oh what about the character sheet thingy mabob btw?
Thats free
Reference sheet to remember your characters abilities basically
its in the post sent earlier
Aye aye, see you later I guess, thank you so much for the help.
It’s also in the pinned comments in this channel
I do what i can
What does like 1d4 or 2d4 mean?
Roll 1 d4 or 2 d4
d4 means a four sided dice
d20 means a twenty sided dice
etc
XdY means "roll X dice each with Y sides and add up the result"
So 4d6 means "roll four dice each with 6 sides and add up the result"
Ahh okay thank you
XdY + Z means "roll X dice, each with Y sides, add up the result, and add Z"
For example, 2d8 + 4 means "roll two dice with eight sides, add up the result, and add 4"
Very helpful, also what does these two mean and what they contribute to?
I can't place an image but basically what is CON and INT and what do they contribute to?
Whatever the game tells you they do
I still have no idea.
No, I mean the game doesn't tell you everything your constitution bonus applies to
Instead you'll have your Con bonus written down and as you play, different game rules will tell you to refer to your con bonus
What about INT then?
Same deal, same for all your abilities
Is INT intelligence?
Have you read the basic rules on making a character and using ability scores?
I have not.
But skipping to there now I see
you probably should, it'll give you a better grounding for asking questions
Alright I'll stop being impatient.
Realizing now it's a lot harder learning without a teacher or someone similar to that.
You're a auditory learner most likely
Is there an audio book version of the basic rules?
No, there isn't
Alright
the audiobook format isn't suitable for reference books
Yeah just read the thing, dm me for specific questions, there are also YouTube videos that summarize the basic rules and the process of making a character and allat
Davyd what's your favorite class to play
Indeed I am, when learning songs I tend to use my ears and not my eyes.
Not really an on-topic question for this channel
Any youtube videos you'd recommend that summarize the rules and process of making a character and allat
OH I thought we were in DND discussion 😭
The "crap guide to DND" series on YouTube,
Also xptolevel3's "how to play [class]" series
one shot quips made a few videos on the topic of making a character recently
I just read the book for the rules though, so, you'll have to look that up on your own
Ight thx
I wouldn't advise the crap guide to D&D, mainly because it's 100% not a guide for newcomers. It's satire/paraody/comedy and very unserious

That's probably why it confused me when I was learning to play lol
Oh my God have loved this game for years now ( still an amachure ) and I'm just now realizing there is a discord
It's an action you do on your turn. Any attacks against you have disadvantage until your next turn.
Oh ok
So I got curious about D&D. I don't know how or what it is exactly or where to start. Can anyone help me a little? :)

Very cool, thanks a lot.
Hey dose anyone know a better place for character creation than DND beyond
I'd suspect one doesn't exist. It has the official content there, even if you need to pay for it. Anywhere else could easily be piracy, which is against server rules.
Define "better". What problems are you having with D&D Beyond's character builder?
It's cause my players are using homebrew for race and are not having a good time trying to use DND beyond
There are only three platforms that offer character builders with legitimate and legal access to official D&D content outside of the basic rules:
- roll20
- fantasy grounds
- D&D beyond
Is the issue trying to create homebrew?
We have #homebrew and also a homebrew section on the forums
I hear Roll20 just did a big update on their Character Compendium thingy.
So I've never done DND before, how should I start off? I'm trying to follow the discord's instructions but I'm not sure exactly what to do

yo
You could play the demo or read the rules linked above. You could look for a game or try to make a group yourself among your friends/family. You could watch some games on YouTube/Twitch. Really, there are multiple routes in.
Just started playing DND but there's a lot I don't understand
What are you confused about?
When to roll certain die
?tag new dice
Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
u need help
If the above bot post doesn't clarify, maybe you can give an example.
You usually roll dice when the DM asks you to
Okay so what would you typically roll a d4 for. Ik the DM normally tells you which dice to roll.
Some weapons do a d4 of damage, and some spells do that much healing/damage.
The d20 is for most actions in the game. The others are for healing and damage in general.
I see. And what would a d100 do?
It's not common, but that's to determine the chance of a thing happening, such as with the Teleport spell.
Its also often used when rolling on tables with a large list of random choices
Weapons, monster attacks, and spells all list which dies to use.
Got it Thanks
yo is anyone up for a dnd campaign
If you want to find a game, you can go to #find-a-game for instructions on how
Anyone know how to make a character a Tabaxi?
I'm trying to create a character but I'm not sure how it all works
And I'd like my character to play into my username
Can you explain what aspect you are confused about? Are you making your character online, or on paper?
Online I guess. Thought it would be easier since the steps would go through automatically
And the race just wasn't appearing
If you're using D&D Beyond, you'd need to either purchase the race (or book it appears in) or be in a campaign with someone who has access to the books and enables sharing content.
you need to buy the race from either Volo's Guide, that one Critical Role book, or Mordenkainen Presents
I just want a cat character. Why must there be microtransactions
Only a small sample of the published content is free.
Because the game designers need to get paid somehow lol
But why donowall cats
Is there any way I can get my cat person without spending money?
Or do I just have to start over?
Find a group with content sharing enabled or homebrew it with your DMs permission
I mean, you can still make the character, you just need to add the race details later
Or pick whichever option you think is most cat-like and just call yourself a cat.
I don't even know how to balance a character. I just want a rogue Cat person who can play the lute like a bard.
DnDBeyond does sell individual races and items a la carte as well so you just buy the individual things you need for as little as 1.99 US dollars
For balancing you’ll want to discuss it with your DM and group - balance can happen at the core game mechanics level (thus the books and rules there), at the D&D group’s game level, and at the party level.
And I would do the homebrew one if I knew how. I have no idea how to approach someone and request to join a session, let alone suggest my character
I do not 'people' well
Hense why I am a cat
D&D is a social game involving interacting and communicating with other humans as you roleplay characters in a make-believe setting - so human interaction is unavoidable.
What cat-like traits do you want your character to have?
I know that, doesn't mean I'm good at it.
Fur, whiskers, claws, and adorable eyes
Also bean toes
How you describe your character's physical appearance is entirely up to you.
So again, you could pick any race and simply describe yourself as a cat.
Well that would be one issue solved
A race simply provides some of the things you can do, not how you look.
The only things that the cat character would have is reflexes, claws, and good hearing
Also night vision I guess
But I still would need to find a session of DnD
And I have no clue how to join one
Tabaxi get them all. not sure about the reflexes (unless you count DEX increase?)
One thing at a time.
no claws though
That's why I want a Tabaxi
And the claws are mostly for a gag where while my character is dancing and playing the lute, they cut of their enemies belts
I mean, you can try your hand at making them on paper, you just need the book then
Okay, I'm guessing you are referring to a book that tells you how to balance characters?
uh, Players Handbook for general character creation, and Volo's guide for the race
I'd pretend they're a wood elf for the moment, and start from there.
doesnt solve the problem tho
If you decide to purchase the tabaxi details (which can be done for two dollars) you can update it on D&D Beyond later.
One one hand, I'd like to spend the money and have all that sorted. On the other hand, I have no idea if this is going to last for me at all so I'm nervous to sink money into it
If $2 is cause for concern, then just proceed as people have recommended.
whats two dollars? 🙂 on the other hand just play as wood elf if u like it u can always change it afther u get the other race
Heyas. I've got one simple question, and I'm not quite sure how it works. I have not played a D&D session, but I'd like to know how Hit Dice and Short/Long Rests work. I'm given multiple options on how many and which hit dice to use, but I've still not got a clue.
There are rules for how you make a character, they can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
What part of the rules about them do you not understand?
Okay, I'll start off as Wood Elf, maybe change it later
Have no clue about Hit Die. Basically wondering how they work and why they vary from character to character.
Now for the class, I want a rouge who can play the lute. I don't need every skill from bard, I just want the lute
What would be a good balance for a beginner?
You don't need to be a bard to play an instrument, that can just be something your character does
Each class has a specific hit die. Some are larger, some are smaller. During a short rest, you can use your hit dice (you have as many hit dice as you have levels in that class) to recover HP.
Being a bard would help you play your instrument better but there are lots of ways to get the ability to play an instrument well (this is called proficiency)
Oh, so you can use less hit die if you so wish during a rest?
Sure, you can use none if you want. Or use them all. Or only some. Up to you.
You can even use them one at a time if you’d like
I want the lute skills of a bard, but I don't care about the extra
Roll one, add the hp, then decide to roll another hit die if you need more
Are they limited? Or can you use max die per rest and have no consequences?
There's no way to get just the "lute skills of a bard" without taking levels in Bard
Basically leaning into the rouge with a subclass of bard
I just want to know what the balance should be
That's not how classes work; you need to take a class to access the subclass
You have as many hit dice as you have levels in a given class. So you can use them all, but you only gain half of your HD back per long rest. So you'll have fewer the next time you short rest.
That' just how I'm picturing it
Maybe start simple and avoid trying to have two classes at once (this is called multiclassing)
No, it doesn't. That's not how the game works
Either play a rogue with a lute, or a roguish bard
Oh I think I get it! Thank you🙏
Rogue with a lute it is
So what would be a good level? I imagine the higher it goes, the more risky it is?
Your DM will determine the starting level
If you don't have a DM, I'd recommend not getting too attached to a specific character concept
It may turn out that one or more of the options you've picked aren't available in their campaign
This is just practice. You'll know more when you find a game. Start off by getting yourself sorted at level 1.
So just leave rogue at level 1 for now?
Got it
Now for modifiers, I want fast reflexes and high charisma
Should I alter anything or leave it as is for now?
And what should I do to join a session? Because I have no clue how to approach that
there are channels in this discord.. read them, read rulez they tell u how to..
its more then just asking or clicking a button to join a compain
I know that, which is why I'm asking
I'm the kind of person who finds following rules harder and asking questions easier
has nothing to do with following rules.. its just u need to read and they tell u what and how
So basically find a game that's open for players and sign up?
depends.. its up to the dm if they accept u...
see what people post and what appeals to u and try to sign up..
I have no idea what to look for, I just want a DM who will let me be a cat. I'm not picky and I don't know the lore of each story
So anything will work for me really
So, at it's heart, a D&D session is just a group of people that agreed to play the game together, and found a time to do it. So, if you want to join a group, all you have to do is find some people that want to play. You can do this by asking your friends, joining a club, going to a local game store, or finding a group online. If you want to play online, there are plenty of places to advertise yourself, or find other people that are looking for new players. You can post on forums like Facebook or Reddit, or use this server. In #find-a-game we have instructions on how to use this server's bot to create posts in #750812887697588356 to advertise yourself, or you can go to the #looking-for-players channel and read through the posts there. If any interest you, you can use the reply thread underneath to see if they still have openings, and reach out to the DM
There's instructions (read it carefully) in #find-a-game
You might get more specific character building advice in #character-discussion
The command to use the bot is /looking-for and the Discord will helpfully populate it with choices - select dm and then the bot will give you a form to fill out. Once submitted it creates a post in the correct channel and attaches a thread to it. Use the thread to provide any clarifications/corrections or other updates.
There, I did it I think
So just wait for a notification that someone has responded?
How often does that take on average?
no one can really say
You can also be proactive and respond to posts in #looking-for-players so you're not just passively waiting. There are fewer DMs, so they can (and do) wait for players to approach them rather than trawl the huge number of posts by players.
Okay and how do I sign up? Direct message, thread, or BOT?
Reply in the thread. The ad may specify sending a DM, but you could always ask in the thread to be sure if not explicitly mentioned.
hi
So I just attempted to sign up for a session but I have no idea what to make of the response. I'm guessing I just wait?
I know a lot of folks have had trouble with Discord's latest UI update. I've overlooked messages in my Message Requests section in the past.
I don't think that was a reply to you. I think that was another player trying to reach out to the DM
Hi, I am new here and looking for a 5e group.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Okay thanks
I have no idea how thing are suppose to look
I have a question about finding DMs
I know that I have to find a thread in #looking-for-players
But do I have to just send a message and wait for a responce
Or do I have to request a direct message?
Or can I just try to direct message the DM?
In one simple question: What do I do to be allowed in?
Usually the post will specify to message them or not, but if it makes no mention, you really just gotta pick one of them, or ask in the post
As for what to do, depends on the DM really, and what they're looking for, so the general advice is to try and make yourself seem like the best option, since there are a lot of players and less DMs, so if you make yourself stand out, you improve your odds 😛
oh so it's specified
Sometimes it is, sometimes it isnt
I'm making a wizard character for a campaign and it starts off at level 5, how many spells can he know? I tried looking but I couldn't find a real answer
well I dont wanna send a long message full of devotion and in the end not get a single invite
Wizards start with 6 spells and learn 2 every level, so that'd be a total of 14. It's probably not specified anywhere because wizards are not known casters; thanks to their spellbook, they can have a ton of spells, which is part of the expectation when playing a wizard.
Long message could also be a lot to go through for a DM, so it's not gonna be about the length of the message (Though I suppose some could see a long messsage as a sign of high interest) 😛
so for now I just send:
"Hey! I'm interested, please direct message me!"
Such a bot-copy-paste message I know XD
AYY I JUST GOT A DIRECT MESSAGE
Ah OK, thank you
Thanks for the info btw!
Ayy congrats 😎
Is there a specific way you should DM applications or is it just ask?
I'm going to assume when you say DM you mean direct message, and not dungeon master 😅
It depends where the application is, every forum/site will have different methods. In the #find-a-game channels you would respond by replying in the game's associated thread
I am playing a artificer for the first time and the dm is letting me make crazy weapons and tech in his campaign
That's not a standard equipment/weapon in D&D. That's something you have to work with your DM.
Well the DM told me to DM the appilcation so I'm not sure
I made a sentient set of 4 turrets explosive ammo
In that case, exploding Roombas. Boombas if you will
Remember that this channel is to help new players.
Where is the home brew chat
Sorry, I get distracted easily and tend to try and finish my thought
If they're asking you to message them it directly, then you should do so I think
Just practise good interenet safety 👍
I get that but WHAT do I DM? The same thing to bot gave me or just a 'hey this is my about me'?
Ah, my appologies
I would assume theyre talking about the bot stuff, but you could also just ask what kinds of things they'd like to know
Got it, so copy paste or link the thread?
You should ask them
Communication is cool
It also shows a lot of empathy, when you ask someone their preferences, which can only improve your chances of getting a spot at the game I think
Fair enough, I asked
Random thought I wanted to ask, is it possible to make a character who's 1 hit but has enough of an ability to dodge that they can't be hit?
Basically can you become Sans in D&D
To dodge lots of attacks, playing a high-dexterity rogue, that gets Evasion and Uncanny Dodge to avoid attacks would be good flavor
As for going down easiliy, you'd just not put a lot of points into your Constitution (choose it as your 8, with standard array/point buy)
What does each stat do other than the obvious? Like hidden/lesser known effects?
If you have a high constitution for example, do you have a resistance to sickness/poison? Or is it just HP?
Well most poisons call for constitution saving throws
All the ability scores are used for multiple things and can be used for rolls and stuff
AY my fellow Cat!
So a higher constitution will give you a higher con save modifier, and make it harder for you to fail saves against poison
Well most classes will be focused on one stat
For spellcasters it’s just whatever stat their spellcasting is based on
If like something in a description needs or is affect by a stat, it’ll say that
And DMs can call for different stat rolls to do certain things aswell
For non-spellcasters and half-casters, it’s strength or dexterity
Sometimes also a second stat
So for example fighter uses strength or dexterity (your choice), monk uses dexterity and wisdom, Paladin uses charisma and strength (or occasionally dexterity)
The most common saving throws are wisdom, constitution, and dexterity
This chat is for people new too dnd right?
Yes, is there something you need help with? 😀
Eh.. I've been playing on discord and table top with Friends but my friends expect me too be there dm and I've only been playing like 5 months and therfore I'm not very fit too be a dm and I just need some tips cus I want them too be able to play cus our game is all of there first
But they also want be too be a player cus we only have three players not including me
Three players is fine.
It's 4-9?
nah you'll be more than fine with 3, if you're running a hardcover adventure that is advertised as for 4-9 players you might need to tone it down a little
Hello ppl
It’s ok if you don’t know all the rules.
There are campaigns that are very new DM friendly.
I recommend Dragon of Icespire Peak because the campaign is broken down into individual quests on a quests board.
You start with 3 available quests and when you complete 2, then more quests appear. This helps prepping a game much easier.
I’m new to the whole dnd thing so how do play it?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Yeah?
Here is a visual combat guide if you are more of. Visual learner. https://www.dmsguild.com/product/214803/Players-Quick-Combat-Guide
I now know why most of the starter stuff says 12+
I do table top 0^0
dies
It’s just a guide that explains what you ca do in combat. It helps whether you are playing with a physical or visual table top or play using theater of the mind.
Alr I get the gist of it now

Idk if there’s any place I should ask for a party lol
My experience in dnd is baldurs gate 3 lol
You can look in the above channel in the bot post
You can also look on the various facebook pages, subreddits and Roll20 postings that are out there
Thanks
I wanna get into dungeons and dragons

In the bot post above, you’ll find lots of helpful links, including the free basic ruleset
Sometimes yes, but that’s pretty rare
Oh i was about to say im broke af
The emphasis on free in this case was in regards to the rules though, not the group you’d be playing with.
The basic rules are free, and include everything you need to get started, but the are expansion books available for purchase that will give you access to more customization options
Hello I am new to the community. I was recommended to look here for some help and maybe a game. If anyone has the time to talk about this I would be greatly appreciative.
Check the pinned messages - there’s lots of good resources there to help get you started.
Try skimming through the free basic rules and if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel
I will look further into this thanks. I passed through here and typed that before I moved on. I have never played the game so I know there is a lot that I need to learn. Just trying to figure out how to find a group that will take a person who has never once rolled a die.
I will look on though then come back as needed. Thanks.
Most folks are fine with new to D&D players - particularly if they show an interest in learning the game (e.g. reading the rules on their own beyond just asking at the table) and just fitting in well with the rest of the group.
I’ve never played dnd before does anyone have any tips?
I was advised to look further into this server. There is a lot of information here depending on how high you would like to scroll.
There is a lot of answers here to though.
Hey I am new and was wondering if I could join a game, and/or someone teach me how to play? I am not good at learning from reading I like visual or someone teaching or I won't retain anything. Not trying to be a nuisance just heard about the game and thought it'd be cool to learn.
So we don't have time/bandwidth to teach everone D&D one on one - but we do recommend folks start by checking the pinned messages here in the channel.

Okay I'll try and figure it out from the rules. Thanks I looked online, but couldn't find anything that seemed official or anything.
Give the free basic rules a read, then maybe watch some videos/liveplays/podcasts of folks playing D&D to see how the game mechanics work (recognizing that many streams are entertainment first and not "how to play D&D"), then try making a character or two (see free basic rules - the first chapter is a step by step on building a character). Then find a group and start playing!
By the way not trying to be rude just figured it might bother you if you realized by choose in your bio is spelt chose. Again not trying to be annoying, or rude just know it bothers some people to find out about an error they made. If it's not an error sorry.
😃 no problem and thanks for the help!
Fixed
so ive been noticing something with my players when they make their characters (some use dnd beyond and others the PHB), theyre ending up with wildly different starting equipment and I was curious which one would be the "default" players should defer to for equipment
Each class has a starting equipment list
You can also just take a random amount of gp instead to buy equipment with
yes, but the lists dont match up if that makes sense?
each class and background influences starting equipment, they shouldn't start with magic items, and the starting equipment should be ~okay
yes, and ive noticed that the same character made with the PHB has less options available than in dnd beyond
like way more items in their inventory as a whole, not a bad thing, just want to know where best to direct players
They also get equipment from their background
And dnd beyond also shows the full contents of the equipment kits, while if they’re manually making a character sheet they might just write “explorer’s kit”
ahhh, that makes sense
Regarding Dungeons & Dragons, are there any rules you have to follow? Aside from the obvious bare minimum. Or can you do what makes you and your friends happy?
As pixelatedcat said, it's a game of rules
It's quite a "group of people telling a story together, ~3-6 players each playing individual characters, and a DM being the rest of the world" thing, and the rules serve to provide consistency and power scaling like how much HP something has and how much damage it deals
That’s what I was kinda going for with the bare minimum
The rules exist to provide consistency as to who can do what, how much, how good is it, etc
so beginning to ignore them will erode at the structure they provide
Well outside of the basic rules, there’s nothing other than what’s in the other sourcebooks. There is good etiquette, however
I see
hey, do you guys have a character sheet template? i dont know where to find one
PDF character sheets:
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Or Digital (need to own books on DnDbeyond or be in a campaign with content sharing and access to the books for character options above/beyond whats available in the free basic rules):
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
thanks
How do I find a group to play with?
find-a-game channel I believe.
Yeah, #find-a-game is one option.
Greetings.
i'm a solo player looking for a small one time group starting a sesion soon peferably before 8:00. anybody have a group suggestion? (text peferably but definately no video)
Dnd isn’t really a pick up and play game
You don’t just jump on a session a few hours beforehand, you find a group to join for the long term
i know, just want to do like a small little test to see if i like D&D enough to make an actual commitment to the long term stuff
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

where can i find a one shot game?
Have a look through #looking-for-players
thanks, you have been so helpful
All good!
For one shot style games, dnd adventures league might be good place for you to start.
Yo anybody got a hookup for me if I am looking for some sexy dice? I haven't played yet but am willing to flash some coin for a flashy start.
I’m looking for a group to play with, as well as a DM
There is a chat called looking for dm you can try your luck there as well @lyric fjord as well as a chat for dms looking for players
Check #find-a-game
What is a one shot session?
It's an adventure that lasts one session.
Ah, thanks.
It's just called an "one-shot"
Might be good to join one as someone who’s never really dnd’d before, though it seems my work schedule doesn’t accommodate a lot of the sessions I see posted.
Yes that is a good idea however I do have to find a group 1st
Where?
hello
Hi
Hope I find a game to join it’s my first time
Question for new players: Very, very new players, should they just use the Core book races, which use the +2/+1 to two fixed attributes, or use the Tashs Chaldron/Monsters of multiverse style of +2/+1 to any stat of your choice? asking because i'm hopeign to Gm for some cusions and want to know advice on how to direct character building in session 0
i would highly suggest the tasha's option
it lets you combine any race and class without sacrificing your main stat for your class
Nominally a good idea. . .but core books don't have that update, so would it just be confuseing to go 'the books is evertyhing you need to build a character. . . just ignore what it says about this one bit'
nah it should be fine
Its a standard option on dndbeyond now even with basic rules only iirc
Hello
humm thank you I adjust my power point then, thanks
yup
Ok so I'm new to DND.. can someone explain where I should start?

Hello
Howdy.
Hi good day
the avg roll on a 3d6 is 10.5, but what is the avg roll on 4d6 minus the lowest roll?
That's not a newcomers question
#non-dnd-topics would be more suitable as it's a general probability question
How many d20 do i need
You can just use 1 and reroll it if you need to, but 2 is a safe bet.
You can always borrow from a friend or even use apps if you have to.
Normally do you guys play dnd in discord?
But having one of: d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, d4 is a safe bet. You'll probably need more (two of each helps, although 2d12 is rarer), but can borrow from friends at the table, or collect them as needed.
People can play in person or online. If playing online, better to use the digital dice on the platform you're using, such as a dice bot in Discord, or the dice rollers in roll20, so on.
I play my weekyl game online using discord, as do a lot of people
How much do i need to know before i find a dm
Honestly, nothing, but it depends on the expectation of the group
The more knowledge of the rules you have going in, the better, but it's not mandatory
You just need to find a newcomer friendly group, which aren't rare things
Having a rough idea of how to make a character (you can even try making a practice one) and a rough idea of how combat works can really speed up the game, but you pick most things up through playing. You do not need to read all the rules and memorise them. Not even long term players do- much better to learn how to look up rules quickly if you need them.
How much character prep time is usually given? Do you usually get to talk to your group before hand?
I only know stuff in bg3
I often give my players weeks of prep time, but if can very much depend on the style of the game. You can find 'pick up' games where premade characters that follow certain rules can just join with that character (Like Adventure League games)

BG3 is a pretty great way to get into D&D. I got into D&D through a much older D&D video game and likewise had to relearn a few rules, but having a general idea of how things worked really helped.
Session 0 before a game and making a PC specifically for a game is advised, outside of pick up games. It's nice to know what story/world/group you're making a PC for so you can tailor them to fit it.
So i can copy character build from bg3
