I recommend reading/skimming over the free basic rules (linked in the bot message).
Then I suggest watching some folks play D&D (YouTube/Twitch - look for "D&D livestream")
Then try making a character sheet or two to figure that out (again refer to the free basic rules).
Then go find a group to play with! (Read #find-a-game to learn how to use the Looking For Game channels here)

thank you <3
If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel (see id:browse to see all the many channels we have dedicated to specific topics of D&D)
We do tend to be a quite helpful sometimes
If I buy a digital map for Dragon of Icespire Peak can I share it with a DM?
I'm new to D&D online but I've played PF2E and BG3 so I'm kind of familiar with some things.
Yes you may use official D&D maps in your group's games.
Remember to have fun and good luck
Hellooo. um, I´m new to dnd online
I´ve been playing irl here in México, but like, I want more XD
Wanted to learn how to do it online and stuff!
Aye welcome
What help you need
Well, I wanted to find a DM and like
Try out roll 20 to play online and stuff
There you find peeps or dms
They usually note what type of vtt they use
For additional questions feel free to reach out towards us
Thanks! I was just about to ask lol
I´m trying to use the looking for players stuff ahh, but it doesn´t let me use the channel?
Do I need to like, have a role or something?
Read the find game channel carefully it is indeed not that easy at start
I'm struggling to understand how this Avrae thing works
Oki dokies
Best to ask it for help or look up the tutorials.
Because you don't use the channel
Read #find-a-game carefully - you use a bot command to fill a form and the bot posts your form.
We have #ddb-avrae-help

How does my party of complete noobs pick a DM when no one wants to be DM
Yo
Paper, rock, scissors - and then I'd also suggest everyone runs a oneshot (single session game). Maybe someone will find playing as the DM is fun and will chose to take that role once everyone in the group has run a session or two.
Oh! Thats actually a really good idea
Good luck to all and have fun
It's a very simple bot
hey what's the best app to make a character?
Dnd beyond, or just use a pdf
Character Sheets
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Helloooo :)
I'm new to D&D(ish); I had a campaign last year but my party only managed to hold three meetings before we got too busy to play again
Hello I am a Newcomer. I already know what DnD is. I observed it for a long time and have now decided to really dwelve into it. However, I don't have enough friends that are interested in DnD. Are there any ways tonolay DnD online? Would you recommend to play with strangers? What should I pay attention for whil creating a character? In generel, what ways do exist to play the game an what should be approached with caution while creating a character and jumping into it's fiest game.
?tag new online
Thank you!
Hi, im new to dnd and I dont really know if i want to fully commit to this hobby. If i want to play online, do i have to own something or does only the DM have to own it?
You can play without buying anything
Remember to have fun and good luck
😊 👍
though its proving difficult to find any campaigns not hosted during my working hours 😅
I'll just keep combing through the #looking-for-players channel
Try posting yourself your schedule
How do you mean?
Put a post up
In which channel? 😅
If you read #find-a-game it explains how to use our LFG channels
Oh!
You would put your post in the #750812887697588356 channel (so use the /looking-for dm command)
Sorry, my understanding was lacking
No worries! That said, also check out #looking-for-players - that's games looking for players.
Also #looking-for-community which is other D&D servers that may have D&D games running at various times and even maybe play by post games which are less set time period constrained.
You're welcome! Good luck and best wishes on finding a great D&D game or group!
Hey I’m new here and looking for a dnd group that is accepting a young teen and also newbie lol but also my schedule is kinda rocky soooo I hope i have a chance

Hi I'm very new to D&D and I am just looking for a group to play with (I am a young teen) however I have a very... rough schedule so I hope I can fit in!
See above bot post
Im new to dnd, played a one shot session of a ttrpg, would love to get to know everyone!
Awesome
So is there any groups 😅 also thanks for all the love people!
Glad to meet such a wonderful community
Same here same here
Please read #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking for Game channels - posting that you’re looking for a game anywhere else is off-topic and will be moderated.
Find a group who will let you join
I am also looking for a group to join
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
I am so sorry, I fear I might be stupid. When submitting a "/looking for dm" post, do I send the message in #find-a-game? I don't have permission to send any messages in #750812887697588356... but there might also be conditions I haven't met yet.
You can do it in #find-a-game, yeah.
Or really any channel that lets you send messages.
Oh! Perfect, thank you! I wasn't sure if it was a conditional thing, such as having to be in the server for 24+ hrs
Success! 😊

U-Um hi there y'all I'm very new to DND and I was hoping that someone could help me make a character sheet, for the life of me I tried watching them videos to help but I can't warp my head around it.
Have you read the basic rules?
Oh! I have Hun it's just still so confusing and overwhelming and I'm more of a visual learner!
I would start by downloading a pdf character sheet, and filling it out box by box, top to bottom left to right, referring the basic rules and asking questions as needed
I'm mostly just here to find a dm who's into solo campaigns, I enjoy using like small, one on one campaigns to kinda like field test my characters.
Oh gosh I've read the rules before but it was a little while ago. Would you happen to know anyone that could go into a call and help me?
No sorry
I would suggest;
- slow down
- take the rules in smaller chunks
- watch some live plays on YT or twitch to see gameplay in action
- repeat
Until comfortable
What do you need help with
I was hoping someone could help me with the math of the player sheet tomorrow
What math?
hello, im a Dm for me and my friends, now let me be honest and straightforwards, i created a end of game boss, thats simply the players nightmare fuel and takes trama from their past and makes it a reality, one of my friends whos played Dnd is a bard, keep in mind just a regular level 1 bard, He wanted to seduce the boss, so i let him, thinking he was joking. he rolled a 18 and he said he really wanted to do it, thats when our session ended. my question is, is he allowed to do that?
- I hope you mean the player characters' nightmare fuel/past trauma- best not to bring the actual players' trauma into your game
- You determine what is possible and not possible in your game. You can determine that a creature is impossible to influence in a certain way.
- i meant their characters truama not my players, im not that mean
good
thanks mate
do yall have any good ideas for some backstory for an arcane trickster rogue whos a magician
theyll be my second character and i want to know how yall do it well
ty
I can help you get setup.
Let me know when you’re available using hammer time and we can go from there. https://hammertime.cyou/
hey, im a new player, i was just wandering if anyone wanna chat in voice about dnd.
No VC in this server, sadly.
discord has vc
This server doesn't
i mean as in like you can just call in discord
Why would we want to do that when we can chat here?
i just realised that i have been rude, im sorry, i only ment to ask around, not try to force anything

- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
How does it work?
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
Where do I start?
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
We've got some links to some free resources that can help you get started as a player or DM. Don't worry too much about learning all the rules before playing, as you'll learn most while playing the game, but it's a good idea to have a look over how to make a character and how combat is generally meant to go to get a rough idea of it before hand.
And of course you can ask questions here about things as they come up!
Hey everyone! im aarya and im relatively new to the community, was wondering if anyone was able to help me find a group on here to play regularly with ❤️

Hey I'm brand new to dnd and was wondering If dnd is more emmersaive to play and how I can start playing dnd with rules and know how and such
Check the bot post above the kobold one for the basic rules
For additionaly questions feel free to reach out
Is dnd online kinda like an actual video game?
Well its still a ttrpg
But some dms bring it to live with unreal engine maps
Which can be quite awesome
but its ofc not the standard
Cause I was watching a video on ddo and people are actually playing their characters
There's "Dungeons and Dragons Online", the actual videogame MMO based on an older edition - which isn't this server
then there's playing Dungeons and Dragons (the tabletop roleplaying game), using the internet to play with people online
that's an MMO, not the tabletop game
I see, thanks
That's also set in Eberron, and by nature of being a videogame has to be pre-scripted with set dialogue options and pre-scripted quests
Whereas with a DM, the DM can improvise when you say anything, and hand out consequences
the beauty of dnd and ttrpgs
The beauty of DND is a player can turn it into the 'Steamed Hams' bit from the simpsons with like, one decision that has to be resolved
indeed
Hi how to role play ?
think of who your character is and think of how they would react
Time and skill. simply put yourself into the position of your character and try to renact their feelings and thoughts
Where ?
But you can search for games
How ?
Where ?! (dark knight voice)
using #find-a-game (reading it carefully - you use it to fill a form for a bot to post for you)
Are all of the games in find a game in American time?
thats usually specified
In using the dnd beyond character maker, given its my first time should I just use a premade one till I understand what everything means?
Depends what you want to play as. Do you just have basic rules only?
Wym
Wym basic rules only
on dnd beyond basic rules are free for everyone
for base char creation there are books which expand to more races and subclasses etc
Elf fighter
if you should play campaigns via beyond usually a dm can and will share his content which allows everyone to access all his book stuff and access new content for character creation
I see
Can anyone help me in new

so my friends and i are gonna play for first time irl i bough the books but tbh i has no ideaa how to dm aside of memes and shows i never seen an actual dnd game
any recomendaation?
It has been 4 months since I used the find a game, how much longer do I have to wait before I succumb to the thoughts
Does moving count as an action?
No
SERIOUSLY
I didnt knoww I am a new dm and I did it wrong the whole combat T-T
What counts as a bonus action
Is drinking a potion a bonus action
TwT idk what to do welp
??
Are there any free alternatives to D&D Beyond
Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds also offer the free basic rules.
Or at least something that doesn't require 5 different people to buy a book for some extra content
Drinking a potion or administering a potion to another character requires an action.
If someone in the group has a Master Tier subscription, they can enable Content Sharing for your campaign.
Once that’s enabled, everyone’s books get shared with everyone else.
Hmmmm- I'll hold off on it until I figure out if this group will actually like DND
i got all that alreaady but since none of my friends know how to play idk how or what to do as dm
You can also buy things individually, like a single subclass.
got both the text books and beyond books
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
So you can just get what you need when you need it.
Oh thats kind of neat
in beyond a dm can chare their content so only he has to buy stuff sips tea
Is it just the DM that can share content?
as far as i know everyone can with master subscription
Anyone with the subscription can enable content sharing.
Once it’s enabled, everyone’s books get shared.
Ok so I have a question
How many seconds should be a turn? Because when I was DMing today everyone were so slow and they did their turn in 3 mins and the other people got bored, How about 10 seconds each turn?
Its too fast
i would recommend play one game first before going into dming
And my players are very new
I did play in 3 one shots ...
But it isn't enough I think
Dming is not easy at start
I know but I try
a one shot sounds good
Thats admireable
usually quiet fun
nice
My players are new and hard to get their attention theyre always on their phone and Idk what to do T-T
But great campaigns are more my taste
now that's just rude
Easily
Yes it's so annoying...
talk to em
They told me they want undertale music instead of dnd background music
If they dont respect your time and effort you might have to search a diff group
lol
to play with*
But I already started my campaign and I feel bad dropping it now
It's the second session I did todya
oof
Dont make your friends into dnd players rather make dnd players your friends
They say they like it but they never pay attention
And 2 of them got into a fight and another one left
hmm
In the middle of the session
Damn
Well they might be just nice i would be trying to talk to em
I hadnt thought of that-
It's hard all my party are teenage girls
lol
Made lots of friends due to that
I just realized I'm making my friends play dnd lmao
A round (everyone taking their turn) takes six seconds in-game.
I mean not making them- they're all interested
imagine having friends couldn't be me
It's because they were in a shop and the bard player wanted to seduce the seller to sell it for free so for like 3 mins she's been rejected this offer and then another player screamed at her to stop and then she got angry...
of they enjoy it its good
The length of IRL time a players takes for their turn depends on the group.
Whenever the trigger for that reaction happens.
But once you take a reaction, you can't take another until the start of your next turn.
Like what trigger
Someone gets attacked as example they can immeadietly take a reaction to cast shield to prevent damage
An opportunity attack, for example, is triggered when a creature moves out of your reach.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#OpportunityAttacks
lovely spell btw
0k SOOO I did a little homebrew
But any rule that gives you a reaction will specify when that reaction can be taken.
Also only 2 hours left till my curse of strahd is starting so iam hyped
They have an npc in their party that can only use his power when theres sunlight so basically they were in a combat in a dark room and 1 of the players opened the window so I wanted the npc to attack because theres sunlight
nice
But it wans't his TURNNN SO IDK IF I can use a reaction
hmm
You can only take a reaction when you have a rule that says you can.
such stuff to learn takes time
Opportunity attacks are the only reaction every character gets access to by default.
thats why i advice the stuff from earlier
But that's fine. If you're not sure what the rule is, it's totally okay to make something up and keep the game going.
You can always looks up the answer later and share it with your group.
That part's unavoidable.
Like today they were supposed to fight someone but they didn't so I didn't know what to do I planned that this fight will last for a lot of timeee
Thats a core skill you need to learn
SO instead I made them fight robbers
Dont marry yourself to encounters 🎶
But it wasn't good bc it wasn't how I planned it
My party just wants a combat every session
So it's hard T-T
let your creativity take the wheel
I can only say such stuff takes time
i started as player but nowadays i write my own storys and plotpoints and even create my own maps and minis
And im hosting 3 campaigns rn
OH WOWWWW
man i'd love to make a mini but i have no idea/no skill
heroforge
oh cool
Also so in myy dnd
ya welcome
They have like a guide man to their adventure
AND FOR SOME REASON NOW THEY MAKE FANARTS OF HIM
But I will make him get kidnapped
Oh i would not force a npc into the party
It's not a force
just a sidenote
But it's not a force
alot of players arent fond of DMNPCs
i know but some players dont like em
It's complicated idk how to explain what he does
Whats a good virtual tabletop?
Foundry/alchemy/roll20
I personally love foundry
I recommend testing different tools out and find what works best for you and your group.
There is also Owlbear.rodeo which is pretty straightforward and simple to use (also works on mobile)
Oh thats new for me
I like Owlbear.
https://www.owlbear.rodeo/
DnDBeyond is working on a Maps tool but currently it's in Alpha and you'll need a Master Tier subscription to use it.
Okay so-
After having messed around with a few virtual tabletops
I have decided that this shit is too complicated and I'm gonna just find a dm here
Wheeze
feel free tp look around
I just hope I can find a DM for us
Looks like there are loads of posts in find a dm
Im confused on how to find a group here?
What.
nice, thank you!
indeedy in the end we still need a few peeps that have no sense of self preservation and want to be a adventurer
I dont see any posts in that channel
I have 5 friends who want to play
Im not sure about a few of them though-
was just a joke ofc
helloo
hi
good evening
Anyways!
Welcome in the cozy place
Am I allowed to post a looking for dm thingy for a full party or just myself?
Mildly confused
i would say so
just try it worse case it gets deleted
or even ask in mod support
Anyway if people got questions lemme know or other peeps in here we dont bite
Go for it
Im trying to find a group
But im having a hard time with this discords lfg system
ya
Is there a channel where groups are looking for players and advertising their play times?
yup there is
Can you link me the channel?
I dontnsee any posts in there
Only stuff about finding a dm or finding players
Im looking for a group that might be short a couple players
The #find-a-game channel explains how to find a game and specifically how to use our Looking For Game channels
sup
Any help needed ?
Im not sure what to do ngl
At first we suggest the basic rules to get a grip. or the handbooker helper by critical role
on Yt
I played dnd for few session not a lot tho
or I played oneshots with my friends etc.
yee not only dnd but pathfinder 2 etc. as well
thats good base knowledge
certainly more then some newcomers
so far played with bard and rouge had 3-4 diffirent parties
oh wait also a barbarian
I think in total I played for like 6-7 sesion max I think
Well im sure you will manage around but if question arise you can always reach out here
how do we find games to play
Hello, I'm new to this server and to playing dnd. How do I start
you get explained how to use the channels
okay thank you
I would say that I have ok pbase knowledge from watching shows like d20 etc.
And watching dnd content on youtube in general
But I wanted to join a game

I am trying to find a campaign suitable to me but all the campaigns I have seen compete with my schedule. I am still in school, trying to join a campaign to fit in with my schedule. Do you have any suggestions?
Nope, the Basic Rules contain everything you need to play. The Player's handbook just adds extra options
The problem is, I tried making a character on dndbeyond and I had practically no options
Like for the druid subclass, I could only pick cicle of land
Hey yall! I’m new to D&D- an absolute noob. I’ve never played, but I’ve always been interested in it. My friends were telling me the other day they’d love to play, but I don’t know where to start. I have an idea of a character from the minuscule research I’ve done, and some people have said I’d make a good DM. I’ve watched a few YouTube videos but I’m still a little lost. Can anyone help me get an idea of where to start? Thanks!

Unfortunately it's just trial and error, it can take a good bit of time to find a group that works.
I’d recommend playing dnd adventures league.
It’s a community campaign that allows you to play as often as you are able to. Good to work with as you only need to commit to one game at a time and you end up playing with different players and GMs.
Thanks for the advice
You might also be interested in play-by-post (AKA text-based) games. It allows folks to participate as they're able instead of blocking out a run of hours among four or five people's schedules.
where can I find that?
Besides searching the advertised games on this server, websites like Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, Reddit’s r/pbp, and D&D Beyond’s forums all accommodate play-by-post as well.
welcome in our cozy lil place !
Thanks! Where should I start? Do I start with character building, and if so, how do I go about that?
Here
I'd recommend reading/skimming through the free basic rules (check pinned messages here in the channel), maybe watching some folks play D&D (YouTube/Twitch), and then try making a character or two to see how that works (DnDBeyond has a guided character creation path with their character sheet tool but you can also just refer to the free basic rules). Then go find a group to play with! You don't have to memorize everything but becoming familiar with the core game rules/mechanics will help.
Yeah that’s all that the free basic rules offer
You could just make the character using a pdf sheet
So do I need handbooks now?
No
Ok sorry wrong question. Do I need them if I want more options?
The Playerhand Book will expand your class and 'subrace' options a lot yes.
Xanthar's Guide to Everything, Tasha's Cauldron of everything will add more classes and spells and items.
The books provide additional options/rules for DMs and players to use in their games (or preset adventures).
Mordenkainen present Monsters of the Multiverse will add a lot more races.
But you can play with just the basic rules if you like.
Ok thanks.

Thanks
Best way to find games on here? I’m not a new player just new to using discord for games.
Ive never played dnd before how do I make my character?
Is there like an website for it or smth?
Please read #find-a-game as it explains ways to find games and specifically has instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels.
You can use dndbeyond's character maker if you like or download an editable PDF of a character sheet and make your character manually: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Yoo tysm
I seen and read that. But I didn’t see any activity in find a game.
It's for reading on how to use the LFG channels, there aren't games posted there - the actual LFG channels are listed in #find-a-game and the fact that you said you read it but didn't see those links suggests you didn't read it carefully.
so I ask my question again? sorry, I'm afraid of doing something stupid.😭
Yes, please free to ask your question again
Yep, but best ask one question at a time. So what's the first bit you have a question on?
I went to the website and when I wanted to see my character sheet at the end it said incomplete but I did all of it
The character sheet is really overwhelming
Ok, how do I know what I have to put in skill point, because I know that it is in relation to the history of the character and his physical characteristics but where to put -1 for example?
Ohh that’s prolly what I did wrong I didn’t do anything with my skill points tysm
It certainly can be - but take your time with it and it will make sense.
And remember you don't have to memorize everything! A lot of it will begin to make more sense as you play the game.
How many skill points do you have at like lvl 1?
Character sheets can look like a lot at first, but if we break them down and take them slow it's not too bad.
So is this about Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Wisdom, intelligence and Charisma, or things like Atheletics, handle animal and such?
You should check out chapter 1 of the basic rules, that covers the step by step process of making a character
Ty so much
Your ability scores are generated by:
- rolling dice
- point-buy
- standard array
All of which are explained in the basic rules which you should check out
Also, should I print out the character sheet or what?
Strength-Charisma and such are called 'Abilities' in D&D and Athelitcs and such are 'Skills'.
I think we're talkng about ABilities now.
If you're playing in person, that is typical to print off your character sheet.
But some folks use DnDBeyond or have a PDF version of their sheet that they refer to on their digital devices.
No, I mean, to fill it out. Should I print it out to fill it out?
if it's me you're talking to, it doesn't matter which one but if my character has +1 dexterity in relation to his story but his story doesn't specify anything about his strength, what do I put in strength?
I tried DnDBeyond in the beginning but you have no options without buying player's hand books
Wait I need to make a story for my character?
Is it supposed to be a long as story or just a little backstory
whatever works for you
Oh I see! So your character gets bonuses to abilities based on their race (older rules) or history. Usually this means +2 to one stat and +1 to another.
What dice do I use to randomly assign my ability scores
Older rules might have a high elf be +2 Dexterity and +1 Intelligence for example.
This is added onto the abilities you have generated with your DM. Let's sya your DM uses Standard Array: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8
This means you might put 15 in Dexterity, then add the +2 Dexterity from your race/history ontop and get 17.
And even though I've wanted to play DnD for a while now I've failed to really find a group (partially because of lack of effort, partially because I was even younger at that time than I am now) so I don't really wanna go in buying things without a group
But where you put those numbers is up to you. You might want lower dexterity and higher charisma, because your class uses that ability more. Classes have suggested abilities you should put higher under 'Quick Build'. For example bard:
You can make a bard quickly by following these suggestions. First, Charisma should be your highest ability score, followed by Dexterity.
Also should I multiclass or does that spread out my lvls to both classesz.
So instead you put the 15 in Charisma and put the 13 in Dexterity, but still get your +2 Dexterity from race/history and so have 15 both.
Multiclassing comes later when you level up and might be a bit too complex for now.
But a good question for #character-discussion when you're ready to think about higher level characters.
You could buy the partial content on dnd beyond, subclass is $3, and a race is $2. So if you want a specific build you can $5 at the start and after some time playing you can decide if you want to buy certain books.
Hmmmm
I was thinking about the tasha ranger revison
With the beast master subclass
How much would that cost?
Should strength be high for a rouge
No rogue is Dexterity I think
And charisma should be lowest right
Rogues don't need high strength no. Their recommended higher stat is dexterity.
Strength is usually used for attacks with melee weapons. However rogues can use many 'finesse' weapons. Finesse means you can use dexterity instead of strength for attacks.
It’s also why I recommend dnd adventures league.
Each adventure tends to run about 4 hours a piece. At the end of each adventure you can choose to level up. So you can get 76 hours of playtime to reach max level.
Alr ty
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/rogue has information on rogues and advice in their 'Quick Build' info box.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoreSummary Also explains very simply what abilities can be used for.
Constitution and Wisdom are still useful for Rogues. But you can also pick on what you think suits your character.
Constitution is useful for any character as it determines their health.
Wisdom is great for being perceptive and resisting many mental effects.
How much would it cost for me to buy the tasha ranger revison and the beastmaster revised subclass?
Yes I can see my character sheet
Just finished making a character now what do I do?
Except I don’t think it’s right I put 16 into dexterity and I have 11
Well you've got practice for making a character. Now it's finding a game.
And I put 10 into strenght but it got 14
Find a game got it
Heyo so I'm rather new but got some ideas for characters but I don't know how well they'd mix lmao
Ohh I just didn’t save
I'd suggest checking out #character-discussion or #optimization depending on what you're trying to discuss
#find-a-game has instructions on how to post in our 'looking for X' channels. It can take a while to find a game so don't get disheartened if you do get a reply too quickly.
Help I got -3 wisdom
Well that's the modifier. Could mean some fun roleplay moments though.
Or reasons for chaarcter growth in that area!
Are you making your character on beyond?
Yes
But did mean you put 5 or 4 into Wisdom on your sheet. Which is very low.
Yes wisdom is my lowest
But I got passive wisdom too
Did you use standard array? You should use: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8
8 being your lowest.
Can you send a link to your character sheet? Do you know how to?
I just used the randomizer
I can try
Ah. Best not use the randomizer (Which rolls for stats) as you cannot use stats rolled without the DM witnessing the rolls.
Ohh alr
So you can't be like 'Prrft, yeah, I rolled all 18s, I'm just that lucky'.
Alrr, I was worried about whether or not it'll work lore wise if that makes sense but I'll switch there if it'll help
Btw when I tried to share the link it said you don’t have the rights to do this or smth like this
But I mean it’s not like I have the best stats
Standard Array is useful for making practice characters. You might have to remake the abilities when you join a game and the DM has different rules on how stats are made.
Ohh so I’m not supposed to make my character before trying to join a room
You can to practice.
You can make practice characters to see how it's done, or test out an idea, and you might be able to use them in games. But generally it's best to make a character specifically for a game. But you can always change a character you've pre-made to fit a game.
A DM may have PCs start at level 3 instead of level 1. They may not allow elves in their campaign setting because they don't exist there. There are many parameters you may not not of before joining a DM's campaign.
Oh ye that’s pretty logical
Games can take place in different worlds, or have different tones, or different 'house rules'.
One DM might only allow Standard Array for stats, another might only allow rolling.
One game might be goofy fun 'Monty Python' style and best suited for silly fun character ideas, while another game might be serious RP 'Lord of the Rings' style and better for your serious characters.
As a forever DM I finally get to play this Monday. The DM is an ex-coworker and he wants us to roll instead of using Point Buy or Standard Array. That means I have to wait until Monday's session to roll in front of him. I created everything else for my character though (with his approval)
Huge w
what is a monks speciality?
Monks are very quick, and balanced between defense and offense, and often have fun abilities in battle that can let them control the battle in unique ways. This can depend a lot on which type of monk, but things like stunning fist can keep an enemy out of the fight for a moment.
Are you on phone or computer?
yes
my laptops battery is dead and my charge broke
charger*
wait on phone
I didnt read right mb
What’s a paladins role and also a rogue’s
Classes don’t have as strict of a role as you would expect
I think of a rougue is to like sneak by and get intel and that if a paladin to like be the tank
Not sure though
Overall tho, paladins are damage dealers who are also good at support
Rogues are much weaker damage dealers who have some utility features as well

is there a begginer friendly group that i could join
You can search through the posts in #looking-for-players to find one that fits you
Thank you
I will note that most groups are fine with new to D&D players as long as that individual shows they're invested and learning and also that they fit well with the group.
Have a look at the basic rules. They’re linked in the pinned messages of this channel

Hi all, I am starting my first set of campaigns. One as a player and one DMing Dragons of Stormwreck Isle and was wondering if anyone had any tips for a new player
These are my general player tips: #dnd-newcomers message
Hey everyone im new to DnD and i really wanna get into this and make it a good hobby. since i've had a huge love for fantasy and exploring these Amazing worlds. any idea where they would take a new player like myself. ive already created a character and i wanted to get this started.
I've been pointing people to dnd adventures league as a good place for new players to start.
If you'd like I can go over your character if you would like some feedback.
Hey guys, I've been dying to start DnD and so glad I found something. Will be diving into this into the am. Any helpful tips would be nice, I want to find a group and a game towards the end of December
Hey, haven't spoken here, not new to D&D, but it's been a while. My fiancé is dying to play for the first time. We're UK based

I would also strongly recommend looking at local game stores, libraries, colleges. facebook, craigslist, meetup, or warhorn are all places to find games
There may also been game conventions which host games
is anyone doing a game tonight

Linking these here for any new comers just coming in. The above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
So when making a character let’s say I make a character who’s a species that’s not on the list of available options like let’s say a doll since I have a character who’s a doll is there a custom option?
Custom lineage or maybe use reborn
Does the doll do anything different to any of the published races ?
Or warforged, or autognome
Honestly the character is just a wooden doll with a sword
Like I am very new to dnd
So I do not know much
Hello guys I'm new to DnD and I'm looking to find out more of this game
Can anyone explain sorcerer warlock and wizard difference?
Sorcerer uses Charisma, knows their spells, has "Full Caster" progression, and has Sorcery Points (and Metamagic).
Warlock uses Charisma, knows their spells, has Pact Magic for spell slots instead (fewer slots, but get them back on a short rest), and gets Invocations.
Wizard uses Intelligence, prepares their spells from the spells they put in their book, and can add new spells to their book if they find them in scrolls or other spellbooks.
Sorcerers are magic because they became magical or were born magical
Warlocks made a pact with an otherworldly entity to get magic and eldritch secrets
Wizards studied and can do spells via their intellect

Here, Lee
Could I get some help to make a character since I don’t really understand how to
Have you looked at the basic rules?
Yea I’m just not the best at understanding things I’m a lil slow
I'd recommend checking youtube for some character creation step by step videos. In general, you should be able to find a huge amount of helpful material online, aimed specifically at new players
Oh ok I really want to go into dnd despite me having a brain that runs like a 19s computer
A good group and dm can support you through almost any challenge you come across
DND, though it has some faults is quite intuitive after a session or two
Anyone when the next game could start
Dnd isn’t like an mmo you have to find a game to play in first then there is prep time. Check out #find-a-game for info on finding games here
There are, which is why you need to get in line for a DM's game
How do I do that
simply use #find-a-game
Read the information (carefully) detailed in #find-a-game.
It has instructions on how to use the several Looking For Game (LFG) channels we have here, including instructions on how to use the bot coammands to make a post.
yo should i buy starter set (2014) because Stormwreck is out of stock?
Can somebody plz recommend me a source where i can learn this game

Yup, catching up on everything now.
Hi there! new to DnD world! hope to have fun 😄
I hope you do as well good luck
welcome to tis lovely little place
Hello
Hello! I hope you have fun as well!
Hi
I hope i can shair my dices somewere on how many i have
Thats cool
Hello everyone!! My level 3 Dragonborn Sorcerer recently moved up to level 4!! When it comes to leveling up my character I have no idea what I’m doing or what stats I should be increasing. Does anyone have a guide or anything that could help me appropriately level up my Dragonborn?? 🙏🏻
@crude lark I agree with @fresh fable
The race is not what affects what stats are most needed, your class does
Review the features of your class/subclass/weapon, they will tell you what stats are needed
Spellcasters have a spellcasting stat
Martials , depends on the weapon
Is there anyway to boost my armor up more when I level up? I had previously talked to my DM about it but my party doesn’t have the required materials and tbh I doubt we’re close to finding them 😂
There are some spells
Why worry about armor as a caster you should be not on the front line
what is your AC and what subclass do you have?
Sooner or later you will find also new gear that will increase that
I'm generally new to D&D, I've only played a few sessions.

Stuff to help
I know about basic things, my big bro helped me out.
Need to just remake a character and find a game.
Awesome here fun and good luck
Hey guys! So I love dnd as a concept, however I have some hangups with my group and how it functions. Idk if this is the norm for dnd or not since it's my first group, and I was curious to hear your opinions on it. I'm kinda getting put off dnd but I feel like it's not supposed to be this way
Shoot your questions
We are like a 7 player party so I guess I get that might mean I myself don't get to play quite as much, however most combat encounters take literal hours for it to reach my first turn. I usually only get like, 1 turn of combat or maybe 2
Yes, that's the problem with seven PCs — combat can take a long time, even more so if there also a lot of enemies.
The battles are all huge scale, like army scale battles or something. The DM is super into history and wars/kingdoms and stuff so I guess that probably plays a factor
Thats .. to much of Players in my opinion
The DM should enforce a time limit to each player's turn and/or have them prepare what to do before their turn comes up.
I can fall asleep for like 3 hours and nobody will notice
Thats a big issue
You should talk to your DM on this.
Indeed
Nothing we say will change your DM's game.
that is very irregular
I just don't want to complain about it because I don't really know what a solution could even be
It doesn't help that I'm frankly kinda introverted and it can be hard for me to speak up during RP and stuff. It feels like everyone else is having fun fleshing out their stories and I'm kinda just there
I feel like this is just an inherent problem with having a big group I guess
Yeah that's super weird for a DND game
Not necessarily there are ways to shorten it like the minion rule
even with 7 players 3 hours of absence should definitely be noticed
It sounds like your DM wants to play wargames but it's easier to convince people to "play D&D" since that's a popular system
Are there a ton of minions/allies on your side usually?
Thing is it feels like im the only one not really having fun
So I'm unsure if the problem is me
Sometimes but it varies
not every table fits for everyone you know thats totally fine
I'm guessing it's probably not a you thing if the game drags that much
Might want to jump tables...
Like this campaign has been going on for like almost 2 years now with no end in sight. We've been level 20 for a while now
But they're my friends and I don't wanna disappoint them by leaving the group. I guess I wasn't expecting this long of a commitment
It's like a homebrew campaign and I think maybe he's just getting carried away with his story idk
It's just kinda wack because when my turn comes around I just do it and it takes like seconds so im not really sure why everyone else takes hours and hours
But even outside of combat like, again I can just sleep for 3 hours without anyone noticing. Sorry for going on and on
@teal oyster you'll need to talk to the dm
Yeah I'm just worried about shitting on his story or whatever since I'm pretty sure he wants to make a book of it or something
But I guess I have no choice
It just feels like a lot for a first dnd group
Might talk to him and tell him that I wasn't expecting this long a commitment or something, since it's already probably dragged out well longer than most campaigns
Not all games play the same. It could be that you need to find a group that fits your preferred style.
So he's railroading?
Yeah I was wondering the same thing
2 years is not that long for a campaign TBH, even if you play every week.
Its fine to not want to be tied in to that commitment if you werent expecting it.
I think my problem is more so that it's eating my Sunday and I feel like im just sitting here for 5 hours not doing anything
Like I'd be fine with the commitment if I got to play I guess
I realize there's stuff outside of just battle in dnd, but even then it's hard for someone who's shy to speak up in a group of 7 I think. It's why I'm saying the problem might just be me
That being said, our current session is almost over and I have not taken my first turn in combat which I feel like isn't normal
If you're not having fun then leave that table.
"No D&D is better than bad D&D."
Remember with more players means more wait time inbetween turns in combat and less spotlight outside of combat.
A good DM should have limited the number of players (3 to 5 is optimal)
Yeah frankly I AM a little annoyed because the group wasn't always this big
But the DM just kept repeatedly inviting other people without consulting anyone
Again, talk to your DM privately to address your concerns. A good DM would be open to feedback from their players.
Having more players doesnt immediately mean that they are not a good DM
I dont prefer over 5 players, but the assumption that more means there not a good DM is a weird one.
Yes, that was generalization on my part. It's a time constraint due to the time inbetween players. I was in a party of 8 players and it took forever inbetween turns (this was later made worse when the party split into three at one point...).
Part of the issue is the DM needs to keep the players from taking too long on their turns, reminding them, "Player #4, it's your turn next so think what you're going to do."
One of my players has ADHD so he would hum and haw for a couple minutes before just saying, "Eldritch blast." He had also wrote a 10-minute long speech for his Leader feat to inspire the other PCs to give them a bonus — I had to cut him short after two minutes in with me saying, "The speech is suppose to be 10 minutes game time, not real time."
Yeah I never really said it made him a bad dm, just that I don't like the issues that such a big party brings
I'm not really invested anymore tbh
Also it doesn't help that each person takes a minimum of 10 minutes on their turns
Like 3 hours is long enough for ONE turn rotation my god
Indeed
Worst case we have some Talented peeps here that dm
...okay the massive scale 3 hour battle has ended before my first turn
Uh what
Thats sad news but i gotta say that wasnt dnd if it is just combat
Theres more to dnd
Yee of course
There's more but I feel like im kinda having the same issues of not doing anything for hours and hours even outside combat
Most sessions we don't even have combat
That one is probably at least partially my fault
I've never played a dnd campaign before, but would it be dumb to skip being a player and going straight to dm? Because that's what Interested me the most
I have also never played dnd but I would think it's fine as long as you start out with experienced players so they can offer you advice

Yeah I'm just kind of worried incase people think I'm a bad dm but I enjoy creating the story's a lot
You can start off as a DM but you will have a lot of homework ahead of you. As a player you just need to learn the rules just concerning combat and your PC but as a DM you essentially have to know the rules to everything since you'll be the "referee." (You don't need to memorize all of the rules but be familiar with them)
If you start with people who are open to helping you, I think you'd be surprised. People who create stories almost always think they're bad at it but the dnd community is a very compassionate and welcoming one from my experience
Head to #dm-discussion to ask for DMing advice.
It is possible but not ideal. DM must track alot of information and that is a strain
I recommend to learn the game and its rules as a player first, preferably with an experienced DM.
People only say that because its generally easier to do something after having seen someone else do it
It's far from impossible though, just give the DMG a quick once over and play a hardcover like Stormwreck Isle designed for new DMs
My son wants me to dm a game with him and his friends I’m not that creative is there anywhere we can get a walkthrough of the starter set I can do for them as I’d love for them to enjoy and get into it more
I think dnd sounds cool but where do i even start
The Starter Set is great for new players and DMs because it was written in mind for them.

thanks
There are some adventures books that are very new DM friendly, I recommend dragon of icespire peak because the campaign is broken into individual quests on a quest board.
After a certain number of quests are completed, new ones get put on the quest board.
This makes it easier to prep only a few adventures at a time.
When you get a sense of the rules you'll probably be wanting a oneshot to run
There are lots to choose on the DM's Guild
heyo! im new to dnd online, im trying to run a campaign with some friends. I know about roll20. Does anyone know how the campaign stuff on dndbeyond works?
Basically it’s mainly so it’s easy to view the character sheets of everyone else in your group
It also allows content sharing
oh sweet thank you! im not sure we have space but I will definitely let you know:) anychance you could I still ask a couple questions though?
sweet, thank you! so ik that roll20 allows you to run a campaign with the digital grid and maps and everything. But I seen dndbeyond also has that. Can I buy a adventure module on dndbeyond and then run the campaign thru dndbeyond?
Well dnd beyond is just a set of tools
that would be perfect, thanks
so I couldnt run a campaign like you could on roll20?
Depends what you mean by run a campaign on it
You can run a campaign with just a voice chat and pdfs
Like, we were going to use roll20. And buy the campaign on roll20 and play it digitally. But the UI on roll20 is kind of hard to use for me. So I was thinking with the campaign option on dndbeyond it might be the same as roll20? but just a different site
So you just need a vtt to use for it?
You could try owlbear.rodeo
okay, sounds good! do you have any idea if it works kinda similar to roll20?
yeah pretty much ahha. but also the digital campaign and stuff. Ill brb tho sorry have to jump a car
okay! thank you for the help. Its much appreciated!
For a VTT, between DNDBeyond maps and Owlbear Rodeo, I recommend Owlbear. It's just a VTT, but it has more features than DDB maps currently, and you can choose to add (free) extensions if you want.
Awesome thank you! Do you know, would I have to buy the module for what adventure we want to play on owlbear rodeo? Like you would on roll20? To have access to the maps and everything specific for that adventure
Owlbear is just a VTT, not a shop. You'd just import the image of the map as a map, and then have the image on the map layer.
Bet that’s awesome! I’ll look into it. Thanks for all the help everyone
I'm new to DND what are some basic things I must know first before getting started

Hello
Can a bard cast cantrips as a bonus action?
If the spell has a casting time of 1 bonus action, sure.
Healing Word, for example.
Or if you have a feature that lets you change the normal casting time for a spell, like a College of Glamour bard:
As a bonus action, you cast command, without expending a spell slot
Oh ok
Spells are such a pain to cast half the time
Like mostly because of materials which are there to keep the spells balanced but it’s still a pain
A spellcasting focus solves the need for most material components.
if you have a component pouch or your class lets you use an arcane focus/holy symol/druidic focus, you usually don't need to worry.
Except where the component has a listed gold cost or is consumed by casting the spell.
Does it always specify if it is consumed?
If it doesn’t specify, it’s not consumed.
Yippee
So you only need to get the item once, and then you can reuse it every time you cast the spell.
What is a focus?
For arcane spellcaster it's crystal, wand, rod, orb, or staff.
Read the class description.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#SpellcastingFocus
You can use a musical instrument (see chapter 5, “Equipment”) as a spellcasting focus for your bard spells.
Some bards also get additional options for a spellcasting focus.
Swords bard can use a weapon, for example, or spirits bard can use a crystal ball or tarot cards.
I thought I was going to have to invest a lot of gold in this
Use the Starting Equpiment option.
I’m a collage of eloquence bard
So I dont think it applies
Where does it say under College of Eloquence you don't need a focus?
what you are though, is a bard, so you can use an instrument.
The rule of thumb is that class features and spells do what their description says. Specifics beat out general. Unless the sub-class says otherwise, you follow the class features.
I think they were (rightly) pointing out that eloquence doesn’t get any additional options for their spellcasting focus.
Unlike swords or spirit bards.
Uh hi
Yeah, things do what they say. You can only do a thing if the rules say you can do that - there's general rules, like the Dodge action, that literally every creature can try and do, unless something explicitly steps up and says they can't do that.
Then, you can cast spells, because your rules say you can.
Then, as an Eloquence bard, you can treat certain charisma ability checks differently, never getting a d20 roll lower than 8 on those certain ones, because your rules say you can.
Did I say that?
You’re treating me like I’m dumb when I’m new to a complicated game
And technically, no, I don’t need a focus.
It’s just definitely makes the game more reasonable
Exactly what I’m saying
You just need something for any M components of a spell you cast, yeah. A pouch or a focus takes care of it, unless it says it's consumed, has to be worth at least some money, or both, in which case you do need exactly what it says.
It’s lower than a 10 lol. Its honestly powerful enough that some DMs ban it and I would never blame them
Yeah
right, I remembered it as 8. Reliable Talent is definitely minimum 10, I thought eloquence was minimum 8...
Honestly 8 would be more balanced
So
Let me get this straight
Let’s say I have a sword equipped and for my action I switch to my lute
I can then cast a spell that needs a material that isn’t really specified with a price
Like idk, enhance ability
Or that it’s destroyed
On my next turn unless the casting time is a bonus action
So on your turn you can interact with one object for free — either put away the sword or take out the lute.
If you want to do both, you’d have to use your action (and you’d therefore be unable to use your action to cast a spell).
But you’d be able to cast a bonus action spell like healing word.
That’s what I said sir
Yeah, just making sure.
K
Also I did not know that, thank you
An example is
Bane, has an M - a drop of blood. It doesn't say it's consumed or must cost money, so you can replace it with a focus (for you, an instrument), or just handwave and assume you have it via a Component Pouch.
Awaken, has an M - An agate worth at least 1,000 GP that's consumed by the spell. You need that agate, no replacements.
If you have your sword in one hand and your lute in the other, though…
Can you do that?
A lute isn’t light
Yep
You can hold things in hands just fine
using them effectively may be a different issue
So you could hold any sword in one hand
but if it was a greatsword, you need two hands to attack with it. But you don't need two hands to just hold it.
I’m not trying to use a lute in one hand my dm would not entertain that for a second
A light weapon only means it qualifies for the Two-Weapon Fighting bonus action.
you can hold two greatswords at once, yeah. But you wouldn't be able to attack with either
Correct, since they’re two-handed weapons.
We are getting into semantics that are not relevant to what I was talking about
what's being said is you can always have your lute in hand if you want to, even if your sword is drawn
to use it, you need to sheath your sword, though
But you can hold any two one-handed weapons, and attack with either.
I didn’t think of that
And the Light property is just about the Two-Weapon Fighting rule
So you’ve said
Strictly speaking, nothing in the rules says you have to play the lute to cast a spell from it.
lol, I asked my dm a while back if I could cut myself with a dagger as a bonus action and they said yeah so we don’t worry about that
They didn’t know it was a spell component but they were fine with it when the time came
No it doesn’t. But it’s more interesting from an rp perspective
What if I casted pyrotechnics?
With a focus?
Or heat metal the requires touch?
I have to say, using your own blood as a spell component is pretty awesome
well, pyrotechnics has the V and S components
V means you just need to be able to speak
S means you need a free hand
Yeah lol
you cant cast pyrotechnics with a focus, as it doesnt have material components
An npc thought it was pretty metal and tipped me
Oh, the non-magical flame isn’t a material it’s a requirement
I mean I can I just don’t need to
no, you cant
yep. if you look at components, it only says V and S
I can see that
im just tryna help you

Welcome! The links there should help you get started.
But for dice specially, you will need a set. If you don’t have physical dice, though, there’s plenty of digital options available (many for free).
Such as using the discord bot Avrae, able to roll all the dice (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, d100), or dice of your imagining (d2, d3, d5, whatever)
Hi
Check out the bot post just above for the basic rules, as well as the helpful handbooker helper videos
How do ability scores work?
You have 6 abilities, each governed by their respective score. Higher is better. 10 and 11 are scores for the average joe and provides a +0. Below 10 is when penalties begin happening, above 11 is when bonuses begin happening.
What are abilities? Are they like stats in other rpgs or are they spells/moves
theyre stats
Okay. Sry if im confused. Im coming from turn based fighting rpgs.
Difference between intelligence and wisdom. And what's constitution
"Strength, measuring physical power
Dexterity, measuring agility
Constitution, measuring endurance
Intelligence, measuring reasoning and memory
Wisdom, measuring perception and insight
Charisma, measuring force of personality"
Well, your basic arrangement of strength, dexterity, and etcetera
are Ability Scores, which give you your Ability Modifier.
They're some of your most important game statistics.
What other games call abilities or powers, DND does them by source.
If you can cast Hellish Rebuke because you're a Tiefling, that's from your Infernal Legacy trait.
If you can enter a Rage because you're a Barbarian, that's from your Rage class feature.
you could try reading the resources in the basic rules
I take my information better when it's one thing at a time and coming from people
There is no way to avoid reading the rules, this is a game full of them
However, you can also use the videos linked in the pinned posts
And read at your own pace

The channel is not intended to walk you personally through every single thing, but to answer specific questions
I know. I clicked in advantage and disadvantage it didnt tell me anything
These things are explained in the basic rules which are linked above
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AdvantageandDisadvantage
This will tell you how it works, if you just read it
the link i sent you literally led to 5 lines above the information you needed
If you're interested, Jocat did a really good series called "Crap Guide to D&D"
It's really funny and honestly I'd say comprehensive enough.
Thx
For abilities, check out his video on filling out the character sheet
Wassup everyone. I had some questions about my first campaign i'm joining and i've never played before. Anyone around to point me in the right direction ?
what specifically do you have questions about?
here's probably a good place to start
awesome. so i'm joining a roll20 group where we sort of play ourselves. so ima pick a human and go fighter bc i'm just not gonna pay attention to spells but id like to have that extra turn i've loved so much playing bg3(like 4 play throughs, human big fighter, monk lots of fists, half elf with some magic, and a barbarian of sorts) but i'm asked to make a character at lv 3. so without buying a book how do i fill out a lv 3 character sheet?
have a look at the basic rules, theyre free online
basically just make a level 1 character sheet, then level it up
oh btw action surge isnt an extra turn, its an extra action
If you make your char through DDB, it should walk you through leveling up your character real easily. Of course though, you'll be locked into using the 'free content' (Basic Rules).
Yeah, since you're new, just make a level 1 character first (so get your Race/Class/AbilityScores set up) then level up to level 2, then to level 3
ddb? i'll google it
dnd beyond
D&D Beyond.
ooooooooo
My bad
all good ima check out the site some more. i just google discord dnd help and it took me here and i didn't check out the ddb page at all
Deff give it a look over 😄
yeah on the site now and made the free acct and trying to make a character now. if i get lost i'll pop back. just trying to get my character sheet sent in before i fall asleep
You should ask your DM if they have an account/campaign set up on Beyond.
If they do, and they purchased books on the site, you could join that campaign and get access to more content. Not exactly sure how that works but I know it does I mooch off of a friend
This channel is for basic queations for new players

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
ok thanks
Wsp,I’m kinda new to all of this
Look at the Dyno post above to get started.
Ok,thx
This is a 3 min video that is a decent overview: https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=qvelDHfgV8kgtUJY
Though you don’t really need the starter set to begin playing since the basic rules are free and available on dnd beyond.
if youre not a spellcaster
if you are, not using your spells will make you nearly uselss
So i don't have to deal with the third page of the character sheet if i dont want to?
not if you dont get the spellcasting feature
Cool
If you want hold off on learning about spells and keep things simple, you can play a rouge, fighter, barbarian, or monk.
This YouTube playlist can has fairly short and detailed videos about each character class and other aspects about dnd https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJmFJXf3BXjwXkNFo_-iwtHb24AuJcXqx&si=YVUoa34u_p6rdrRn
ive played bg3 and ive had my eye on dnd for years but never got the chance to play with any groups or anything. Can someone point me in the right direction if there is any discords that have campaigns and stuff i could get started on?? also someone to show me the ropes

Whats the background, alignment, and level on the character sheet
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
level: your character's level. generally starts at level 1
background is a mechanical representation of your character's backstory
aligment is a spectrum with lawful, neutral, chaotic on one axis, and good, neutral, evil on the other. it represents your character's rough morals
Okay. Whats a mechanical representation 😭🤣 im not good with words.
basically, it's what being a Sailor, or being a Sage, or being a Soldier, actually does for you in a "what feature do I get" sense
But to elaborate on alignment, there's 9 alignments, so don't expect each alignment to be a catch-all - they are just 9 rough zones of behavior.
Don't worry about alignment but rather develop your character's Personality, Bonds, Ideals, and Flaws.

You can get started here. As for "where to play" - DND is a tabletop game, so dispel any potential notions of DND being a "press start to play" style of game, it requires organization with a group of people, whether in person or over the internet
