you lost me
The actual games are shared in other channels, like #looking-for-players.
#find-a-game has instructions for using those channels.
english is so hard...
have a good night
well we can only help to a certain degree
I've seen a lot of people confused about this. Perhaps it might be a good idea to make the final message in that channel a big bold message that says something like "Scroll to the top for full instructions" or something similar
Oh, I've got a whole wishlist of things I want to change there. 😂
Starting with buttons.
lol fair enough. Buttons would be nice
im simply glad i can search for players instead of having to search for a campaign
Hello, I'm new here and was wondering what would be a good idea for my first game I've never played DnD but have a rough grasp of the rules.
Mines of phandelver is a good starting campaign for new players
Thank you for the suggestion I'll give it a look.
Signed up to dnd beyond?
hey guys im a complete beginner and i have no idea what do to
all i know is that this is a role playing game💀
also what are these campagins for
are they like groups of people playing?
Have a look at the basic rules, they’re linked in the pinned messages of this channel
Yeah a campaign is an ongoing game with generally the same group of people
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
got it thank u!
i dont know how to play dnd anybody have a guide or somethin
Look at the resources in bot post 3 messages up
I’m new here and don’t know how to play as well, but I’m here to learn and maybe find a group that I can play and learn with 🙂
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Ayeee welcome in this lovely lil plane
Hello 👋🏼 I hope I won’t get lost, all I know about the game so far is what I know from Baldur’s Gate 3 and I just started, so I’m very much a beginner. But also very much excited to discover more of this world and play irl 🙂

should be fine bg3 is a good start
Bg3 taught me how combat works for the most part, as well as progression, just play it for a while and you’ll get most of the basics down in no time
. Yeah, understanding rules at the beginning was hard, combat is so different from other games but it’s not that bad. It’s not like I can go and do what I want, just shoot my spells or arrows at everyone , but I have to be much more strategic. I definitely enjoy the game so far
But remember that BG3 isn't D&D. The developers of BG3 changed the 5E rules to suit the needs of the video game.
To quote Yoda: "Unlearn what you have learned" (from BG3)
I know that, I like this universe and adventures there tho and that’s why I joined this channel to learn how original dnd works 🙂
Well faerun is one of the many places in dnd
That' great! You'll have a lot of fun with it!
But its not less interesting in any means even one of my favourites
We have #dnd-lore if you’re into learning more about… well D&D lore. Just know that you don’t have to play D&D based on that lore and you’re free to change the lore for your games and settings.
anyway in case of questions we are here to help !
Sure thank you. I’ll definitely dive deeper into the lore (like I do with every game I play).
i want to dnd if enyone you can pick me i just new XD

okay
Posting that you're looking for a game anywhere else on our discussion channels is off-topic and will be removed.
Is find a game a good way to find a group as well? Because I don't want to start playing right away, I want to find a good group that could help me learn.
Really new to all this 😅😅
Saw the post so figured a good time to ask.
DMs can be new player friendly but you should help them by learning as much on your own. It would be a lot to ask for the group to pause the game to teach you the rules.
It can be - here's a brief rundown of the LFG channels
- #750812887697588356 - folks posting they are looking for a group/game to join
- #looking-for-players - DMs/groups looking for players to join their game/group
- #looking-for-community - Other D&D Discord servers looking for folks to join (often have games/groups you can join to play D&D)
- #paid-looking-for-game - Folks you can pay to run D&D games as the DM for you
I meant like, out of game. Whenever the game isn't going. So I didn't interrupt it.
I do recommend spending some time looking through the free basic rules and maybe watching some folks play D&D (YouTube/Twitch).
I don't know. That's on the individual DMs and the amount of free time they have. Scheduling games alone is hard enough as it is.
I mean, is DnD complicated?
Be proactive and you're more likely to be included in a group.
Did you read the free Basic Rules yet?
I'm used to games like WoW. I'm actually coming from WoW, liked it a bunch and always was interested in DnD so here I am lol.
looks at #dnd-rules discussions...
Some of it can get fairly complicated but if you're focussing on the fact that it's a game and focussing on having fun with friends/folks playing at your game/table, it's fairly simple IMO.
Not yet, that's gonna be my next go to.

Alrighty, thanks a bunch!
Is DnD anything like WoW though? Like, genuinely curious cuz all I know about it WoW lol.
No.
WoW is a MMO computer game.
D&D is a tabletop roleplay game with turn-based combat.
(I had played WoW from 2005 to 2021 and I've played D&D since 1981 or 82)
Extremely different cans of beans
For example, a DM runs dnd
WoW is scripted or assembled in advance and has no room for creative applications - for example, you get stuck on rubble instead of being able to use ropes and grappling hooks to climb over
did you get 4E flashbacks when you read the question? 😂
I'm a fan of 4E so I don't agree with the detractors accusing it of being like WoW.
I agree with you, actually. But I know it was a common line
hello, im completely new to dnd and not really sure about anything. i just want to talk to someone a little more experienced, maybe ask some general questions. ye.

You e found the right place! Ask away
Welcome newcomer
The botpost has useful resources (as does the pinned messages)
thanks, ill go read that then.
Hey do y'all know any credible sites for dnd info?
D&D Beyond
Dnd beyond and the wotc site are the only official sites for dnd info
Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds are also licensed to sell official D&D 5th Edition digital book/rule access as well
Ah yeah forgot those
I have question about a race and if it is playable
ask away
Which race?
Winter Fairy
There isn’t a winter fairy, there is winter eladrin tho
There’s also fairy, which you could flavour to be more winter-y
Ok thank you
Remember to talk to your DM on which playable races are allowed in their campaign.
that's a thing?
Yeah
For example, warforged are from the Eberron campaign setting so they may not be likely in other campaign settings.
I thought all dnd games took place in roughly the same setting
Nope
The overall universe is (generally) the same cosmology
But campaigns take place in different worlds within that universe
Like eberron, dark sun, or greyhawk
Welp that explains a few things
There are various campaign setting that are in the same multiverse but are very different from each other.
The Forgotten Realms takes places on the planet Toril.
Greyhawk takes place on the planet Oerth.
Dark Sun takes place on the planet Athas.
Dragonlance takes place on the planet Krynn.
Spelljammer takes place in space (you can traverse between the planets listed above).
Planescape takes place in the Outer Planes.
I have no idea what any of those names mean
Eberron is planet Eberron right?
Think of it like CSI tv series, each one in a different city but still in the US. They're related but different.
I've played in a campaign idk why I've never heard any of those terms before
A DM could have their own custom campaign setting unrelated to any of the official ones I listed above.
Another reason why people told me that being my first campaign was a mistake ig
How so?
from what I understand
As a player you don't worry about the campagin setting that much, especially when your character is just level 1 or 2. You're essentially a "nobody" in the grander scheme of the world/universe. At low levels you're just dealing with very local threats like giant rats in the village inn cellar.
The game was super in the player's favor (my orc barbarian got blackrazor at level 3), apparently the story was railroaded to all hell, and the ending of the campaign was basically a dmpc coming in and saying "everything you did doesn't matter" and magically removing my character's arms when my character got upset
Supposedly that isn't a normal thing but I haven't been in any other games to tell
level 1 is "wow those guys took care of the rats in the basement"
That's a bad DM if they had a DMPC do everything...
I may not know much about dnd but I can tell that the ending was a bit off
They only appeared at the end
That's just as bad.
Apparently that dmpc is how that dm likes ending campaigns
Ugh. That's a big red flag.
Also supposedly my character got off "easy" because supposedly the dm just has the dmpc cast some suped up version of some level 9 meteor spell whenever a pc resists
I didn't know any of this until after the game ended
Oh also like half of the bosses cast some fancy prism wall to block our path when we tried doing stuff the dm didn't want us to
prismatic wall, oof
it's mostly just spell entries
like "The prismatic wall spell" and it does what it does
where would I go for help with making a charater
I more so meant the system
how so
Like spell slots, different components, and material requirements
Stick to martial classes then.
One thing though that I never got when I made a graviturgist though
Why isn't the 8th level spell Reverse Gravity one of the graviturgist's abilities
I never made it far enough into a campaign to get it so idk if it's just a strong spell or what so idk
Spell Slots:
Your ammo. You have an array of spell slots, you have an array of spells you have available to cast (either Known, like a Sorcerer, Bard, or Warlock - or Prepared, like basically all the others)
Components:
Verbal is the magic "ashaneyasoaha ignis mortalis" whatever to evoke magic
Somatic is the gestures and hand wiggling
Material is one of the more important ones. If it has no cost, and isn't consumed, you can replace it with a Focus if your class allows it, or use a component pouch and be assumed to have it.
If it has a cost or is consumed, you need to provide specifically that each time, no replacement.
Because it's an 8th level spell, and it can do a decent chunk of damage / nullify many enemies in the correct terrain
(fall damage is hefty sometimes)
Whereas graviturgy is more about somewhat altering it, mostly just black holes and immediate pulses of gravity.
I'm thinking of making a dragonborn ranger next as kind of a medium between the 20, 20, 20, 3, 3, 3 orc of my first character and my human wizard that made my brain hurt to play
You need to be at least a level 15 wizard to have access to 8th-level spells.
the levels go above 10?
I was told max level is 10
20
You're not going to get three 20s with either Standard Array, Point Buy, or rolling at level 1.
Idk what those 3 terms mean but it was in that super messed up campaign I mentioned
That campaign was supposedly really off-kilter from what I've been told
We fought a Maruk at level 4
Don't know what that is, sorry
a MARUT!?
The "gigantic terminator from the plane of order that has AUTOMATIC HIT attacks" marut
It's been years
A marut is a CR 25 creature that never misses.
The eye monster with unavoidable attacks is what I remember it as
That DM sucks.
Also one of our characters was a werewolf yet the dm went out of their way to make sure they were never able to transform
So that part of the pc's story was essentially blocked
That campaign was scuffed
yeah
Level 4 PCs against a lich?
Maruts are just "you broke a super-contract forged in the plane of order, come to court"
they don't care about ethics, they don't care, they just do their job
It just saw us and started firing lightning and causing earthquakes iirc
Be glad you're not with that DM any more.
honestly I've been wanting to play dnd so much part of me wishes I was
Using a DMPC and pitting Tier 1 PCs against CR 20+ monsters it's obviouisly that this DM is a "DM vs player" DM as well.
That was scuffed, we get it
Usually campaigns are more adventurous and less "DM vs Player" adversarial
Anyways is #character-discussion where I'd go to get feedback on a character?
yes it's where you'd discuss characters
Here you go.
Imagine writing a story, except rather than doing it all yourself, one person acts as the narrator and the minor characters, while a few other people act as the story's main characters
The story is told live, characters reacting to the information described by the narrator, interacting with eachother and the world as the narrator sets it before them
Usually with a lot of medieval weapons and spellcasting
Hello guys, its my first time in here, where should i read to get started?
If you want to see games in action, Twitch is a great resource! CaptainRoBear has a constant stream going of games, so you can see how some play. DnD has a fairly solid following on there so you can search around for a group you like and watch them
is it just text based in like a dc server
It can be
or is there some program
A lot of people do voice chats over discord
Normally with this type of games the best way to get started is playing, you know how could i find a group to get started?
do you know of any groups that have like more modernish games with less fantasy
That’s why I’m here. The group I’m due to play with keeps getting delayed because all of our schedules are so different
i would love to play with you guys, could i join?
i just finished my college year so im free almost anytime

Super cool chat here just joined new to the dnd world glad to be learning
It is for newcomers, wich i am :))
Again this channel is for answering questions for new players
There is a channel for looking for or advertising games. Or DMs
can you summon eldritch cannon during combat
The class feature describes how it is summoned
oh
“Using woodcarver's tools or smith's tools, you can take an action to magically create a Small or Tiny eldritch cannon in an unoccupied space on a horizontal surface within 5 feet of you”
Win
dually noted
Okay folks - if you’re trying to organize a game or D&D group use the correct channels (read #find-a-game to learn how to use the LFG channels).
dnd is more focused on fantasy
that said, there are plenty of other ttrpgs out there that are more modern
☝️
would u be able to point me to one of them if u know any
what flavour of modern?
cookies & cream
how modern?
wheeze
more combat focused or not?
what r they
CoC is detectives versus lovecraftian cults
Kids on Bikes is like stranger things I guess
stranger things was based on a kids on bikes campaign
Different RPG systems - but this is not the channel to discuss them. Use #non-dnd-topics for further discussion
so all of them have some fantasy or magic element to them
DND will unerringly include magic. It's most of the classes, and there's a lot of spells and magic items in the game, and many monsters have magical abilities.
As UndyingNoob said, other TTRPG systems are off-topic. This is a DND server first and foremost. This channel is also mainly focused on helping explain the basics of DND to newcomers
lets move to the suggested channel
k
Can someone please tell me where to go if I need help with making a charater
If you've given the character creation parts of the basic rules a read through and are still having some issues on parts of it feel free to ask here if you like
I have trouble with numbers and stuff like that
If you use the Character Creator on D&D Beyond it should handle almost all the numbers/calculations for you
And it's fre right
Yeh
ok thank you
The only math needed is arithmetic
Just hearing this makes me so anxious. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/oi2Tb3lqT-c
yall i just joined what do i do 🧍♂️ how do i get started

Hello
Hi
Never been on discord very much and I'm only in the fourth week of my first campaign, friend said to join since it's a good place to find other groups
Nice
Ask for help, share ideas, chat
Some of us help new players in this channel.
welp, I'm a very new beginner lol
DND discussion is generic DND
Newcomers is here, for simple stuff, basics, rules
Rules is the rules as written no matter how stupid or how one's table plays it
DM discussion is what the tin says
Homebrew is basically community mods to describe the vibe
Off-topic is the tin again
Hi can some one give me the stats of a goblin I don't know that one
You can talk about characters, get DMing advice, ask questions about the rules, share stories about your games, make homebrew content, and much more. #channel-guide explains the purpose of each channel
dnd-rules is for specific questions about how certain interactions/features work
You can search it up on dnd beyond
DM has been very tight-lipped about the rules and what I can or can't do. tbh, all I know comes from watching critical roll these past two weeks.
I'm in need of desperate help lol
Have you read the basic rules?
How I can't find it
They’re linked in the pinned messages of this channel
Go onto dnd beyond, and search goblin
I don't even have the handbook cause I wasnt told thats a thing until two days ago
You don't need the Players Handbook. The free Basic Rules has everything you need to get you started.
really?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

Thank you so much
thank you 💙
This is most of what you can do - This Specifically is what everyone can do (except for spells, only some get to do spells)
The Basic Rules are the core rules of the game to function, not including optionals and variants from other books
Your character sheet (mostly just composed of your race and class) will tell you what you can do
um, is the DM supposed to put your character straight into the campaign? I've watched critical roll and they introduced themselves and the world. Mine didn't do that and I'm confused about who is who at this point. A friend said it's toxic, I don't know how to ask the DM about this, help? Also can the dm ban all evil-aligned characters? we were only allowed to pick good ones or nutreal.
You didn't have a session 0 to introduce everyone's PCs?
a what?
PC = player character
NPC = non-player character
zero? was I supposed to know it??
It'll be important to temper your expectations.
Not every DM can run a game like critical role.
Not every DM has the bandwidth or funds or energy or health to put the sheer amount of effort - especially with prodigous writers - Matt does, into their own games.
But it's fair to expect at least some form of passion or effort put in, yes
Session 0 is the pre-game session where the DM sits down with the players to tell them the house rules, social contract, the theme of the adventure/campaign, roll up the characters, etc.
...
So yes, while it's important a DM introduces the world to their group, there's usually prep time. Critical Role doesn't show the prep time of people figuring out their party at session zero, or the months of planning their next backup characters.
Yeah, please don't compare other DMs to Matt Mercer, who's a professional voice actor.
he helped us build are characters from his allowed section of options, is that what you mean?
Banning evil alignments is somewhat common
I don't allow evil characters at my table because they're disruptive.
oh I didn't mean to expect anything just the rules they were doing were different and I got confused
House rules, yeah. Any DM worth their salt will run a session 0 first, a "alright so for this campaign I feel like trying X Y and Z optionals variants and house rules"
I found it thanks
And thereafter any 'more player requests' or new players joining would be brought up to speed with what's going on, what rule alterations are in play, and so on
seemed fun to act like your character with each other, we don't do that. at least no one in my group but me and I get embarrassed when they stare in silence.
This is my attempt to find out if there is another different group. better? less awkward I guess
You might want to look for a more roleplay focused group
Roleplay
Yeah
Groups sometimes focus more on the combat
What’s an example of the different rules?
well, we don't talk about the setting, each other or plot, or anything like that, and is very rushed like from 4 - 6 pm sessions that always have 1 fight. DM tried to have us fight two god dragons in are 2nd session on level 1. and it's just been us avoiding that for the most part. He warned me about meta-gaming. don't know anything about that, just googled what monster we were fighting when he said it. Don't know what rules he operating on until we ask the right questions.
Okay metagaming is acting with knowledge your character wouldn’t have
oh
Googling a monster’s statblock is one of the most egregious examples
That’s very bad practice
that makes so much sense now
Apart from that tho, it does just sound like not the kind of group you would enjoy
I wasnt looking at stats, they have thos?
Seems to be a very combat focused group
Well yeah a monster has to have stats
I wanted to know what the lore about it was
we stole the dragons baby which the dm controls
That’s still not really great behaviour
we did a history check on it, thats allowed right?
It’s up to the dm how and when you learn abt a creature
Yeah if the dm let you that’s allowed
Yeah they shouldn’t be
he interrupts are DM to explain what things do too in a complex way too
its a mess
should I suggest a session zero at this point to the dm?
A session 0 can happen at any time.
he's a nice guy but I don't want to be that person you know
and it's okay to ask for?
oh we are doing all of this threw zoom and roll20
friend said it changes the game a lot
If he's a nice guy then ask.
Check #find-a-game
or is it like solo only?
D&D is a group collaboration game.
so everything but solo?
hm, I got some of my group to make a discord to chat, is that okay to do?
You can have as low as one DM with one player.
Usually it's one DM with 3 to 5 players.
Discord is great for text and voice. I use it for my table.
my group is 6 people
it's not meta gaming or against the rules to chat about the session off session?
No
okay then I think I might be able to get us on the same page then with some talking
like sort out our backstories and then suggest it to the DM next session on how we know each other
Communication is key in D&D.
seems like I'm the only one trying at times, frustrating
Remember that D&D is a social game. You have a relationship with the DM and other players so you need to communicate, just like any other relationship.
your right, I'll keep trying
we all noobs anyway, maybe laugh about it in the future ya know lol
Hello, I am new!
Can someone help me get started
A link above leads to the basics of how to play
in the same boat, limited on info know-how.
Hi everyone new to this discord channel

So how do we play on dnd beyond? I just made my character
You don’t play “on” dnd beyond
Dnd beyond is simple a set of tools to assist with playing
Have you read the basic rules yet?
Yes @fleet field I've downloaded them and read over them. There is also a campaign option for links through the app. I'm a over the road trucker. Just binging dnd tiktok and looking for a way to play 😁
Yeah that helps with managing campaigns, but you don’t directly play a campaign through it
Have a look in our #find-a-game channel for some instructions on how to use this server to find a group to play with
@fleet field thank you. I look forward to some new adventures 😁
@fleet field How can I join a group?
Read their last message, it explains how
omg I’m brand new and exploring the server and I don’t know what 80% of the words people are saying mean
What words?
Happy to help explain them
Most three or four letter acronyms are book titles, but some like ASI mean Ability Score Improvement (or Increase)
Ohh gotcha
Well I’m mainly just finding it funny that I played one campaign a little while ago and thought “I got this”, then joined the server and there’s so many spells and races and stuff that I never knew about lmao
some may or may not be homebrew
Gonna stick with it though and probably cling to my friend (who has actually played more than once before) for help with everything
Feel free to ask things here
Gotcha, that’d explain some of it! And thank you, I’ll def ask if I see any specific examples
I can't say for sure though without hearing some names of things
What does “4e” “5e” etc. mean? Seeing it a lot in #750812887697588356
edition of the game
oh there’s different editions?
current is 5e, and 5e is going to get a moderate update come 2024
yeah this system is not ~30-40 years old
it's around, what, the 50th anniversary?
LOL well that does make sense now that you put it that way
This edition only began in like, 2014
so 4e games use an integrally different ruleset than 5e, for example
I see, thank you!
Anything else?
You can also check the pinned messages for helpful tidbits
Ohh gotcha, ty! I think I’m good for now, gonna keep looking around but thanks so much for ur help
what is the brokem character set i can choose as a beginner ?
Brokem?
Really depends on the campaign and DM if you are trying to go broken
i mean overpowered or easy for beginners
What counts as easy varies by person
first time playing the game
Some figure out spell slots but can't wrap their head around extra attack being 1 action for 2 attacks
Some find "whack with weapon" simple and spell slots as jumbled
I’m looking for open campaigns and can’t seem to find where to join open matches.

"matches" leads me to a little bit of concern as to the perception of DND
Where’s the #looking for channel I see the find a game one?
#looking-for-players link to the channel
Oh ok thanks, all this confused me a bit with jumping right in on discord I’ve never played so I have no idea what I’m doing lol.

What does “community games” entail in #750812887697588356 ?
Games that take place in a community rather than a typical group
The most common type of community game would be West Marches style campaigns
is mage hand invisible to other people?
Oh, so that’d be like a group with like 10+ players?
Potentially, but I doubt that many would actually be in a single session
gotcha
So if you put no to all of the options in #750812887697588356 that’d just be like, your average 3-6 person dnd game?
Yep
More it's a large group of people, some of which are players and some of which are DMs, from which groups form and disband
One day Geoff might DM for Stacy, Andrew, Felicity and Pete while Beth DMs for Ben, Mark, James, and Sammy
The next day Geoff DMs for Stacy, Andrew, Sammy, and Felicity while Beth DMs for Ben, Mark, James, and Pete
however, everyone is part of a community they've formed
Can someone explain the basics please?

Hi
Welcome to this little plane of ours
Thanks
I never posted here despite joining months ago (at least I think ?)
I have a question about something but I don't know where I should ask it since it about a character but also homebrew system to make this character work.
If your question involves using homebrew content or rules to make a character, then it most likely belongs in #homebrew but its hard to say for sure without seeing the question. Go ahead and post it there for now though
Either DnD discussion, character discussion, or homebrew probably
Thanks, sorry for the bothering
Np
Its no bother
Hello
welcome
Erm, so i kinda wanted to play D&D for ages now and just dont know where to start or how to do anything
Any help?
Try at your local game store and see if they run DnD
handbooker helper by critical role
theres also digitaly hosted dnd via virtual table tops
So i should just watch a bunch of videos?
Indeed they explain everything in easy understandable bits
Ok thank you, is there any order i need to watch or can i just dive into anything that sounds interesting?

Ngl i would like to get into DND conversations but there's just so many rules!
Guess the first step is actually trying to play a game
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube. It's easier to digest.
Thanks will do
I'd like some help with making a character please 😅

so what is a One D&D’s playtest rules?
One DnD is the code name for the updated rules coming out first half next year
ahhhh, i see
In 2024, they plan to do an update to the basic rules of the game, to try to modernize some of the outdated parts. “Playtest” is a term that essentially means the same thing as “beta test” in video games. They give us a sneak preview of the rules, so that we can test them in our own games and provide feedback before the official release
oh, yea, now i get it.
hello all, I'm new to playing. Really have enjoyed the times I have played. However, I'd like to get more familiar. Is there a place where people host DnD campaigns open to new players that have experienced player to help along? Thanks!
Not specifically. You can contact the folks who have posted in #looking-for-players if they're open to new players since they may not specify in the ad itself. Or you could post your own ad in #750812887697588356 by following the instructions in #find-a-game.
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Hello all!
I'm learning about D&D through Critical Role Vox Machina. I haven't played yet as my character is a WIP.
Well, what version do you play?
I suppose I should start with the newest iteration 👀
5e?
Yep!
ok
I might be starting another campaign soon. if you want to dm me and give me your name I can put you on the list
Great, thanks! My character name, right?
that or you real name. or a made up name for me to call you if you aren't comfortable with you real name
Alright, will do 👌
Hey everyone, I'm new to the DND game and I honestly don't know how to play, and I'd love to play to metaphorically dip my toe into the waters. I know it's a lot to ask, but would anyone like to take me on as a bard so I could learn and hopefully get better? My twin brother is very into and I'd like to join him, but he said I'd slow him down. So..

Your best bet is to keep an eye on new player friendly games in #looking-for-players There's a number of groups willing to teach as your go!
Alright after a lot of moving around places
Once again I would like to ask a few questions
Are there types of attacks such as "magical" or "physical" etc
Is there a "defense" function like on RPGs
How high can your Hotpoint or health go
Free basic rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Attacks may be tagged as being magical - usually this means they can't be resisted by normal means.
There isn't a defense mechanic beyond Armor Class and Saving Throws
Attack rolls come with only two defining factors
is it Melee or Ranged (self explanatory, such as a Sword or a Bow)
And now the potentially confusing part: is it a weapon attack or a spell attack
I have read the basic rules but I still need a more clarified explanation, I don't usually understand some stuff without it being explained so I am sorry to bother you with it
No worries!
Are there like curses where they inflict damage continuesly
Basically, spell attacks are for when it's the magic of a spell, like throwing a fire bolt or a blast of eldritch energy. Or for just really magic things, such as a wraith touching you to drain your life.
Weapon attacks are kind of 'sheerly physical'. Even an unarmed strike, made with no weapon held, are weapon attacks.
Or are there weapon effects like on some RPGs where if a certain item (let's say a sword) hit you and will inflict bleed
Not exactly. DND doesn't have many videogame-isms.
Not endless damage (unless for story/game reasons) but there are curses that may reduce abilities, or cause reoccuring harm for a period of time.
Ohh but let's say if I wanted to add it, can it be done? Or are there some certain rules surrounding it
It's possible to find magic items. An example for what you asked for, would be the magic item entry for a Sword of Wounding, which can inflict a wound that deals necrotic damage on each of the victim's turns until they succeed on a save against it.
But that is a powerful effect of a powerful magic item, remember
Your DM will have the final say on what can or cannot be done. Some will allow you to add effects to a magic item, others may not, we cannot make any guarantees.
What about races? Is there a set race or can you (pardon for my word) make various breeds of races or create one out of existence
The game has a wide selection of races to choose from but there's nothing stopping you from making your own
You choose your race from one of the options provided. The basic rules includes some, and other sourcebooks can include more.
The question isn't "can you" but "should you"; do you need to make a new game option
Ohhh
Anything you make yourself would be usually called like "Homebrew" and the rules of that depend on how you create it and balance it
like making your own new race
There are pre-exisiting things
You can do whatever you want in D&D, but you have to balance that against
- Is this an appropriate use of my time and energy
- Will this make the game better (more fun) for me and my players
Also if you're new to the game, try working with existing game options first so you get a feel of the core game mechanics and balance of the game before diving into homebrew options.
And to reitterate what I said in #homebrew; there's little point trying to homebrew stuff in a game you don't yet understand the basics of
Can a person double cast a spell? Like fire ball and some other spell or is there some limiting factor on it, I tried it once with a friend but he said no can do
There are rules to the game, yes
Asking "Can I do X?" isn't really the best way to learn them
Well I usually take notes and even watch streamers play but never had a chance to play with others except once
DND is a game of "you can do anything"
More in terms of "you could accidentally wander into an important event" or "you could say literally anything to a person, and will face appropriate consequences for what you say"
and less in terms of absurdism like "pick up a mountain"
There are Actions, Bonus Actions, Reaction and rules for that stuff
Some stuff can be done as a Bonus Action and stuff
For example
"Can I double cast a spell?"
The answer isn't yes or no, it's "It depends, the rules explain it"
Again, read through the core rules and focus on what they say. Most streamed games are focussed on entertainment first (and whatever D&D story they are trying to tell) so often have homebrew and rule customizations.
So it mostly depends if the GM agrees to your actions or agrees to it but in turn make something in exchange or just flat out reject it
Also, those streamed games will be often glancing over a few things
they may only be saying a few snippets of what ends up being an attack vs AC, someone uses a reaction to increase AC in response due to a feature, someone else may also use a reaction to cause the attacker to take damage due to a feature they have
But the best way to understand is to understand it from the ground level, yourself
I tried but I'm more of a listener than a reader, I've been listening to some audio books and YouTubers for stuff like these and questions just pop into my head and I can't usually find my answers
There are pre-exisitng rules and GM decides exacltly what applies or what is altered or etc
D&D is a game built upon reading. You will not be able to learn the rules through listening alone
There is alot of words to it
I see thank you for teaching me I shall study again for this
DND is basically
A primary storyteller acts as a world, the events in the world, the monsters, and the people in the world. They tell details to a group of usually somewhere from 3 to 6 people. Those people are acting as individual characters within the world.
Whenever something comes into question, the rules cover an extremely wide base. For example, who wins in a fight, how much magic can the wizard do in a day, how easy or difficult is it for the sneak thief to pick the lock.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Last question, at what point do you think a story should end and I am asking on your own opinion not in rules^^
Incredibly contextual question
Most groups will know when they need to end a long term adventure
But it's a decision that is made by all the players collectively
So there's a Dungeon Master and Players
the DM has to basically manage the game and the story - they have to manage, say, the tactics of the monster, and remember to roleplay as the monster in those tactics, as well tell the players how the monster acts.
A Player just has a character sheet that tells them what they can do, and a Player's job is engage in the game in a constructive way and use what they can do, to help the party further their goals.
Alright thank you for giving your time and listening to my weird questions
s'all good
Like Leaf said, there's no one time. Have the major plot points and story beats been resolved? Do the players and the DM agree it's a good point to put that particular game or campaign away for a bit? Sometimes it's written into the campaign pitch. If you came here to overthrow the Dragon Tyrant and you've done that, it's time for tea and crumpets. You maybe don't want to play the next year of rebuilding a kingdom shattered by civil war right now.
Oh wait another is it hard to play on mobile or is it suggested to play in PC?
It's possible, but for playing the game online, PC lets you manage stuff easier.
Mobile is possible but PC is easier.
If you have it do pc
Given the option, use PC, yes
Like, I personally could play just pure voice, let the DM move my token and roll the dice, but I'd not like to try and run a game from my phone.
It depends how you're playing. For example, if you're in a group using lots of digital tools such as a virtual tabletop and digital character sheets and discord, PC will be easier
However, if you're playing in a text based game or one that only uses theatre of the mind, a phone will do well enough
Thanks! Time to bust out my 2014 Toshiba pc
Hello
Howdy.
Hi
Eyo
Finally decided to start playing but i honestly don't have any idea where to start i know a bit about the game and how it works already and I don't really have a group to play with yet do you guys have any recommendations for like soloing? If that's a good idea just to get hang of the rules and stuff works before i jump into the real thing last thing I want is to ruin someones campaign
This isn’t really a game you can solo. There are some “choose your own adventure” books for dnd out there but it’s really not the same as playing with a DM
Yeahhhh kinda thought so
But more importantly, you don’t ruin a campaign by being new
Many groups are happy to take and teach new players if they are willing to learn

Im interested in playing D&D how does this work
There’s some handy links a few messages up to get you started.
But if you have any specific questions, ask away!
How do i start playing i created a character on one of the websites, but how does it work
How does what work, exactly?
Finding a game, perhaps? And getting started haha
Do you just DM someone in looking for players
That’s a good place to start, yeah.
Alright
Can you take a look at this character i created
I just want to make sure this is correct

When a dnd campaign post says "roleplay" do you need to role-playing Super seriously or can you you just say what the character will say?
Best to check with the DM just in case. We can't answer for what they're expecting
Hey, I'm completely new to the dnd game. I've been reading the rules for a few weeks now. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who plays this game. Now I have a round with which I play the first rounds. But these are also all newbies. do you have any tips for completely new DMs? So in the spirit of how to learn the rules and tips for good videos for gameplay. But I generally have experience with more complicated board games.
Welcome! If you have any question about anything, we are happy to answer them here, but if you just want some video guides, I have some suggestions for you. If you want help learning the rules, the "Handbooker Helper" series on youtube, made by the cast of Critical Role, is extremely informative and easy to understand.
If you want help learning how to be a DM, the "Running the Game" series on youtube, by Matthew Colville is an excellent starting guide and source of inspiration.
You don't have to watch the entirety of both series. You can pick and choose episodes based on what you are interested in or confused about
Thank you. I asked for videos because I thought it might be easier for you to send them to me. As I said, I don't know anyone who knows about it. I currently have the Starter Set. And I'll buy the Playerhandbook, DoungenMasterbook and the Monster Manual Guide soon. That's enough for now, right?
Yep, that's plenty to get started
thank you. if i had more questions can i ask you?
Just post them in this channel. Everyone here is very knowledgeable and wants to help people

Can someone hop into a voice chat and explain dnd for me. I wanna get into it but i dont understand a lot of whats going on all ik is the 20 is good ;-;
Unfortunately this server gets hundreds of newcomers all the time. It's simply unsustainable to give tutorials to everyone who is looking for individual help. Thankfully, there's tons of resources that can explain things, and we're here to answer any questions when you get stuck on a set of rules.
;-; fair enough. Im trying to also join a game
I have put in a lot of find games # and still havnt gotten anyone
Also i couldnt understand dnd and beyond
I sent you a pm feel free to ask me any questions
A wha?
Personal message
Oh
Hello I'm new to this server so if I say anything that disturbs you in any way then sorry
So I was watching youtube and came across this DnD and I did some research. Me and my friends are bored and don't have any games to play that's why I wanted to know if there is a online (free way) to play this DnD game?
Watch the "Handbooker Helper" tutorial video series on Youtube.

Thanks appreciate it. And another question is there a website where maps and charecters are already built so we can start without making anything?
There are plenty of map making apps. Look at the pinned message in #dnd-maps
You can do a Google Image search for battle maps.
You can also check for free campaigns online
Kay thanks for all the suggestions I'm looking forward to play this with my friends
@outer spear check this maybe: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/dungeon-masters-only/43718-list-of-free-dnd-campaigns
It's a series of sessions of D&D connected by an overaching story
Oh
Trying to create a blood hunter tanaruuk character sheet
Blood hunter is free on D&D Beyond already.
Tanaruuk isn't an official playable race. Use an orc to reflavour it.
I know. Was trying to do a homebrew race. Dm agreed to it and was just trying to figure it out.
Work with your DM on homebrewing it (which is out of the scope of this channel)
Is D&D beyond and the books necessary for playing?
not necessary but many people do still use them for convenience and stuff
Ok thank you. not sure how playing over discord and everything works so was jw what was needed.
the basic rules are available for free online so id still recommend you read thos
Yea I’ve been reading those I understands the basics of D&D just never played a actual session
Greetings travellers I’m new comer that is looking for a fresh campaign to start learning and play
Me and one other person wants to do some DND and kinda confused on what to do cuz we're new
Read the free Basic Rules first.
Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
thanks

Can you make the ocean into a soup in a session
Haha, you'd need to talk to your DM. It's not like there's a "Ocean to Soup" spell in the game.
Isn’t the ocean already a soup though? 🤔

hi
Welcome!
Hi
hello
The links above can help you get started with that. Character creation is covered in the first few chapters of the Basic Rules.
But to start, you'd want to pick a race, class, and background.
I'd really recommend giving those free basic rules a skim - it explains things. Also check the Handbook Helper videos linked in that bot message just above.
okay thx
Classes are like "what is your character good at and what role do they play/fit in the adventuring party"
DnDBeyond has an online character sheet tool and has a guided build a character path - but I'd still recommend reading the rules as it will help you make sense of it all.
the better question is, what do you want to do
howdy
i'm new to the server but i've got a little bit of experience playing D&D though I'll admit its hard to find a stable group
I've no experience
i've never dm'd but i've played in some small campaigns with friends i've met online
it can be fun especially for more creative types
long as your dungeon master is fairly open minded
Yep the newer and more unaware of the rules and lore you are, the freer you are to just make stuff up for fun. Take advantage of it.

^ Useful resources/links to help get you started
Sup can anyone send me the sheet, my dnd book kit just arrived so I can learn how to fill the sheet now and paper is just way better than a pc that I don't have
The file on dnd beyond has way too much files idk which ones I should or shouldnt use
But if anyone can help me know which ones it's just as helpful
@long kayak just read the phb
You can use any one in there you like.
It’s mostly just different images and colors, so pick whatever you think looks appealing.
Yea but what do most players use
The actual layout is all basically the same.
You’re printing it out and filling it in by hand?
Yes
You could use Character Sheet - Print Version.pdf, then.
I ain't got a PC and dnd beyond allows one sub class per class smh
Thanks, that was helpful
What would be the main differences between baldurs gate 3 and actual dnd cause from what i read so far the ruleset seems pretty similar
Damn this quality below 480 God damn
There's also Character Details (Optional) - Print Version.pdf if you want to provide additional details about your character, like appearance or background.
They use the same rules it's just a different story
And if you're playing a spellcaster, you probably want Spellcasting Sheet (Optional) - Print Version.pdf, too.
Yeah sure, wont need it then
I'm still an idiot in the game so ima play a simple choice
The simplest option is a human champion fighter.
Yeah but that sounds boring
Makes sense
Just in a dnd session you are providing the acting of your character
not really
there are some major changes
i would just read the dnd basic rules if youre coming from bg3
True it is a video game after all
Ofc just was wondering lol
?tag new bg3

Hello I have a question I’m running my First D&D ever and what do I do if they seduce the dragon😂?
maybe ask in #dm-discussion
You say, "No, you can't."
Imagine a short ahh person being a thief
Gonna be like a kid sneaking up on you with dagger
So halfling rogue?
Yea that's what I said
But on the other hand doesn't a human fighter sound less like fantasy
Meh but it doesn't matter
If I wanted fantasy I'd read novels not play a game
I mean looking at the game mechanics, a human fighter can be pretty amazing
But ultimately up to you
Yeah but I rlly wanna have more fun with the fantasy elements
Or like the most generic character
Elf bard
D&D is based on the concept of heroic fantasy - so even a human fighter will have fantastic elements (2nd wind, action surge).
Then use plain language that avoids any problematic labels/slurs. If you have questions about the server rules or want clarification, you can ask to speak with a moderator in #moderator-support.
Ok so hypothetically speaking
Could I use prestidigitation and soil anything within 5 feet of range with um
Human excrement, preferably the enemy's pants
Ask your DM - this is very table/game dependent.
Good point
Anyway, please stay on topic (discussing server rules in discussion channels will get moderated 😉 )
Not really - your question is still dependent on your game/DM's interpretation and context
#dnd-rules is more about "how does this rule interact with these rules" and the fine points of rules as written
The implementation of rules is dependent on your table and dm
But you are still at the end of the day playing a game with its own set of mechanics
At the end of the day
Need a good mix of the two - because sometimes what's written isn't interpreted the way it was intended but also if it's not written, one can't know what the intention was.
It's night
Its a role playing game played by people. How a group of people choose to play it cant be easily generalized
Good point, it also depends on context and the dm and the table
Anyhow... we should let the channel get back to new-to-D&D folks and helping them get started.
Fr
Need to ask specific questions - we really don’t have time/bandwidth to teach everyone D&D one by one. But if you have a specific question, we can answer that.
mk
how do abilities work
such as the harengon bunny hop
since i’m going for that race i don’t quite understand special abilities for a race
Oh that would be what’s called a Racial Feature
what is it then cuz my mind is a bit all over the place
idk what proficiency is either which i believe is important but i just cannot understand
So for that Harengon feature you can use a bonus action to use it. You can then jump/hop 5 times your proficiency bonus number. So at level one your proficiency bonus is 2 which means you can jump 10 feet.
ok i needed to know that for the harengon feature to make more sence
Also this jump does not allow enemies to make an attack against you if you leave their reach unlike normal movement.
ohhhol
wdym by bonus action???
On your turn you can move up to your speed, use 1 action, and use 1 bonus action
So the harengon jump uses your bonus action
oh so is like an additional action i can do that is specific to the race i play as
Well there are also bonus actions that certain classes may have as well.
Earliest level you can get dimension door?
It’s a 4th level spell, so level 7
Quite a few. Don’t know the exact numbers tho
Would it be an inconvenience to ask for the names of like three that's are most useful

https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells?filter-class=0&filter-search=&filter-tags=4&filter-verbal=&filter-somatic=&filter-material=&filter-concentration=&filter-ritual=&filter-sub-class=&filter-partnered-content=f here’s every spell with the teleportation tag on dnd beyond
30 ft iirc
Is there any equivalent of a piano i can learn as an insturment in dnd as a bard
As that is a purely roleplaying feature, it shouldnt be hard to ask your DM for something like that
true, ty
There is the zulkoon, though, from Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide.
A complex pump organ that originated with the zulkirs of Thay, who use it in the casting of their spells. It is considered to have a dramatic, but sinister, sound.
YES VICTORY
Hello!! Kinda looking for a future online dnd group, I’m pretty new at this, but I want to learn as much as I can before becoming a DM 😁
Same here
Why is it so hard to find a group 🥲
Because:
- There are waaaaay more players than DMs
- Because there are more players than DMs, DMs can be picky who they choose to join their table
- Because there are more players than DMs, any openings get filled up very quickly
The realist shizznit I’ve ever seen👆🏾
I agree with every atom of my body
Can confirm, I post a one shot on finding players to help newbies and my DMs get flooded.
See and with my luck I wouldn’t get picked 🥲
It is best to expand your search
Dnd is best at a table anyways, hit up local game stores, universities, libraries, etc
I hit up my library, all they had was friggin chess
Are there any beginner campaigns currently happening?
Hiii. I was contemplating trying dnd for a while and finally decided to try to see what the hype was all about (since i quickly realized it wasn’t like any tabletop games i probably every played). Guess im not alone here from what i see heh
@candid tusk you'll have to check #looking-for-players if a DM is hosting one
Oooooh oki doki thank you so much!!
have a look at the basic rules, theyre linked in the pinned messages of this channel
can someone help me make a chaotic neutral jack of all trade bard? I am new to dnd and it sounds awesome to be chaotic 🙂
what part of it do you need help with?
just the general filling out the character sheets I'm using the online sheet for 5e and idk if i can just add number to the sheet to whatever i want or is there a rule @fleet field

Thanks Ive looked into them. Seems pretty daunting not gonna lie.
have you tried making a practice character?
I could I guess? Im a total newbie. I don’t really know what i should be doing rn. Ive looked some guides online but it’s always do whatever you want at the end so im still somewhat confused. Im scared to play bc i just feel overwhelmed lol
i would grab one of the pdf character sheets from here: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets, then fill it out, referencing the basic rules whenever needed, or asking here if you really need to
I already played fantasy video games (and choose your story sort of stuff) with stats and turned based combats that’s kinda the closest ive done.
im in the same boat
Ok cool. I was trying to see if you could find some irl groups here but i guess it’s more online play? Im obv still gonna try to find someplace where I can play irl.
Finally someone who understands me lol
we'll go down together
yeah generally the resources for finding games on this server are online focused
have a look at your local game stores and libraries maybe
Haha fr. I tried looking at my library but they only had kids board games or chests
have a look for local game storse
the closest one to me is 30 mins away, and their sessions go from 9-12 (midnight)
i have not found a game store so far that doesnt run ttrpgs there, and dnd 5e is the most common
They do that? Like gaming or really board game?
which isnt really feasable for me lol
OOF
dnd
You hate to see it
Dnd store? Man i don’t think we have that XD
nah it's like a game store
I said i was a newbie. You see what i mean now
they have a bunch of them all over (just not where i live)
i've friends who play but i dont think they wanna deal with someone who just got into dnd since theyve been playing together since diapers
just a general game store
My family doesn’t even know dnd exist
search up "game stores nearby" or something
wizards of the coast (?) i think is a website for helping you find ones near you
There was a store with larp stuff that’s the closest we have here i think
you might have to try online dnd then
Ya well see. Ill try local discord servers. Here it’s probably too general
If theyre your friends…seems like it wouldnt be a problem
more like friends of a friend, i guess
Omg i feel like that…. I only saw dnd in movies and played video games. I feel like i would be a big burden on the dm lol
theyre pretty tight knit so it's been hard to get close lol
im trying to watch yt videos/ twitch streams to get more of a hang of it. i know most of the terminology but putting it into action is daunting
Im someone who learns better when doing it for real. But im not sure someone would actually want to hold my hand for my first campaign
im a big fantasy nerd in general so it's something i'm dying to get into
Ive watched some nobs stream but it’s still not the same when playing
Yep same here lol
It's definitely easier when its practically applied. I've occasionally hosted one shots to get new players comfortable with the system, but that tends to, uh, hit my DMs kinda hard.
I should probably post that too. I've been procrastinating lol.
People online say ok go watch stuff like critical role but man it’s so not beginner friendly like stop recommending me that
Like i understand it’s cool to watch but it doesn’t help with understanding the game
Nah it’s fine. Newbies are always annoying

Critical role’s main campaigns are not useful for learning the game mechanics in much detail, but what any new player can take from it is the role playing aspect of it
WITH THE CAVEAT, that these are professional actors who are also friends that have played for nearly a decade together
Dyno uses these "tags" system
you can probably search messages in this server for 'tags'
or 'tag'
Thanks!
the vibe is useful though, in that they are working together to tell a story, respect each other, and commit to their characters
Yeah i feel like everyone wants to achieve that kinda gameplay
And it's also bringing in a lot of profit so it's kind of also their job to some degree
whereas most other DND games are a hobby one spends money and effort for
They are a business but that discussion is probably for another place
Besides, we all had to start somewhere so having patience with new players is kind of a given to any DM that also wants to get better.
From what ive seen you technically dont have to spend anything to play but it sure does affect your immersion
for just “what can new players take from it”, i’d say:
- the general feel for the game
- role of dm and player
- respect between everyone at the table
- goal is joint storytelling
- have fun in success or failure, thats the point of the game
- if you have money, dwarvenforge and heroforge can be real cool
these books cost money lol
Like any hobby you seriously want to get into fr
Anw that’s not pertinent here
In either case, there's plenty of resources available to help before jumping into your first game
Probably why there are so few DMs. I've spent over Cdn$1000 on 5E physical and digital books (and even more with older editions throughout the past four decades)
Is it possible to just lurk over some games?
You'd have to ask that particular DM, but giving a heads up doesn't cause too much of an issue.
But what I mean is getting comfortable with the prep before the game. Knowing how to apply your ability scores and the finicky stuff on your character sheet is pretty important and taking the time to learn it really shows how invested you are. Makes a DM feel good when their players are invested.
Ok thanks for that. Ill see what i can do
hi all, new to channel, but have played off on on since the original D&D, yes I am old (51). started in the early 80's.
welcome!
i know close to nothing just played baldur's gate but got interested in learning. I will die at every opporunity Xd

everyone starts somewhere. last edition i played was 2nd. so i migrated one of my favorite thieves to 5e
and just playing around the character creator. bought the players handbook and tasha's book as well on the black friday sale
hello everyone, absolute newbie here! I just createdmy first character but want to delve more into background creation and how to play the game in general, does anyone have any beginner tips for someone who is completely lost and has no clue where to start?
Scroll up two posts, take a look at the Handbooker Helper videos (if you like videos) or the Basic Rules (if you prefer reading).
Hello evrybody! Where do I go to look for groups looking for players or vice versa? First time trying D&D online.

oop ok thanks bot
DM'ing means running the game
DM means Dungeon Master, so it's the verb form of that
And what do you mean by character template ideas and feeling crowded?
Are you talking about how to get started making a character? Beyond has some tips, like:
"QUICK BUILD
You can make a sorcerer quickly by following these suggestions. First, Charisma should be your highest ability score, followed by Constitution. Second, choose the hermit background. Third, choose the light, prestidigitation, ray of frost, and shocking grasp cantrips, along with the 1st-level spells shield and magic missile." https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/sorcerer#CreatingaSorcerer
Or are you talking about the character sheet to record your details?
OK, couple of options. You can use D&D Beyond, and that will guide you through the process and fill in the boxes for you.
Or you can walk through it yourself and write it down as you go, then organise it how you'd like.
Third option, you can use a copy of a character sheet and label the sections for your reference to make the info you need easier to find on your own.
guys gimme the silliest damn build for a bard ever
Two words: war kazoo
My first D&D game I ever played in had a bard that used a Kazoo
Pick up the Bane spell at level 1 and dance around as your enemies are unable to hit your friends at all!
So me and 4 other people want to play DND- but the issue is that we're all online friends
And none of us have any experience
What do we do- how do we get started

One of the four of you will have to take up the job of DM - running the game. Or alternatively, you can try looking for someone online willing to DM for your whole group.
I have a lot of the stuff but never actually got around to playing dnd
Hello everyone! I'm new to dnd and would like to start somewhere :)

Welcome
In the bot post above, you'll find some helpful links for getting started, including a link to the free basic rules
I need a dm
Also welcome to this nifty little place
Thank you
In looking for players dms search for players for the campaign if ya a group looking for dm would be the go to
Ya I can't type in there
You need to follow the instructions in #find-a-game
Ok I got something set up (poorly)
Are there more races to choose from the base ones like elves, dwarves etc? Sorry if its an obvious question
There are 9 races available for free as part of the basic rules. Many more options have been published in the expansion books, but they would need to be purchased or shared with you if you want to use them
Oh ok thank you
a vague question ,how many campaigns are there , officially.
Do you mean to ask how many adventure books have been published? "Campaign" is the term for a group of people playing one of those adventures (or their own) so the answer to that question would be basically infinite
Monsters of the Multiverse has the largest number of races.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/mordenkainen-presents-monsters-of-the-multiverse
33 of them
Which is about half the total number available.
i thought there is some limited amount of campaign which most people play in
I'm not sure I understand what you mean. A D&D campaign is when a group of 4-5 (give or take) people gather together and agree to play some D&D. That's all there is to it. There's nothing official about it.
Are you asking about those "campaigns" or are you asking about the published books with prewritten adventures that people can choose to use?
pre-written adventures
there are 35 adventure books for sale on D&D Beyond (not counting partnered content) but some of them contain more than 1 adventure in a single book, so I don't know the exact number of how many individual adventures there are total
is there any armor with higher ac that 18 plate
Magical plate armour.
ty\
Potentially some exceptionally good magical splint or chain mail could get to 19 too
Otherwise plate armour is the best non-magical armour in 5E.
hello
i need to find a game to join online i need help finding one

No
There are plenty of actual play games on Twitch and Youtube. It would be safe to say most tables won't allow a stranger just to watch their private games.
You won't find a game in this channel, you'll need to try looking in the channels listed in #find-a-game or make a post of your own
i looked and the is no game the
Read #find-a-game - it has information on how to use our LFG (Looking For Game) channels.
i dont need info i just want to start playing
That channel has info on how to find a game so you can start playing
We are pointing you to where you can find games/groups on this server. Posting that you want a game (or advertising a game) anywhere else outside of the LFG channels will be removed/moderated.
- Go to channel
- Read instructions
- Make a post, or
- Reply to a post
- Patience
- Join game
- Start playing
I might be looking for newcomers for an intro game tomorrow but I've already shot my shot this week. What's the best way to raise awareness of a newbie friendly game that's several days down in the LFG channel?
You could browse through #750812887697588356 and reply to anyone you think may be interested.
Then I have to find people specifically who have the right times available. Alright, I'll give it a go.
"I'm gonna run a D&D game, you want to play? You do, cool!"
☝️ like that
Just do it. ™️
haha
You probably want to read the basic rules
And I would recommend using a pre-made adventure to start with
hihi, could someone please give me some basic tips on how to get started? I've never done anything dnd related before
