welcome in our little cozy plane of existence
Hihi!
Thanks!
I started playing dnd because I wanted to have the same interests as my boyfriend
I don’t want to always pester him to ask about things which might not make sense 😔
As with all questions, it can matter on your DM. In my current game goblins and Orcs are treated poorly but in most of my other games they were the same as everyone else for the most part
Damn, so like racism ?
Kiiiiiiiiiind of? In my current world goblins were specifically made by a God to be a scourge on traditional races like humans. They have started to make peace in recent years (in game lore) but it’s a very hard peace
I have huge walls of text of lore for my world. So my lore would be different from traditional DnD and other DMs
i've never played dnd before, does it require a lot of thinking? scale of 1-10 because i have the smarts of a goldfish
As a player a little bit but some games can be simple and easy for new players
Warlock chad detected
hii, i found the character to be pretty cool cuz it’s a contract thing and I didn’t really have a thought out backstory
How do i know my full overall speed
Could you tell me like some pros about being a warlock? I know my cons are only having 2 spell slots
Cause ik my base speed but what do i add to it
usually charismatic so they can be the party face if others arent that charisma based
means handling diplomatic tasks and making vendors sell their stuff for less
Oh yeah I have great charisma stats
What kind of warlock
So it’s like having a higher +(some number) when you roll
You generally don’t add anything to it unless your character has a feature that says otherwise.
Yea if you have high stats
The type where you make a pact with a powerful deity
in terms of low you subtract a certain number
Indeed but what kind
There are as example
I.. don’t really know
thats fine
So my speed is just the regular bard speed?
Where do you think would you char take the powers from or who would they make a deal with
Mine made a deal with a demon, she lost a game of beer pong.
PFFFF
Alrighty fun
she’s a crippling alcoholic
Speed typically comes from your race.
In this world it would be a devil since demons rather go killing instead dealmaking
Wanna see a drawing of her?
Shoot #dnd-arts-and-crafts
Oh yeah it was a devil, I just prefer not to say it in fear of triggering people
I don’t see any bard rule that provides a base speed.
Sorry i always get race and class mixed up
But how do i increase my speed
What can i have to increase my base speed?
Permanently or temporarily?
Well there are some boots
- Mobile feat
- Be a wood elf
- at least one racial feat from Xanathar's Guide
- be a barbarian or monk
- magic items
Ok i have none of those so never mind
So i’ll just write 30?
Im a half elf
how do i put advantage on somthing in beyond?
Well, there's one more option: there are variant half-elves in the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, and one option for those of wood elf parentage is to trade a half-elf feature for the wood elf's bonus to speed.
a book, Xanathar's Guide to Everything
Idk i think i might be good on that
Ok but since i have no special features to, should i just write down 30?
Yep
Initiative is rolled at the beginning of combat to determine who goes first: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Initiative
by default, it's a Dexterity check, so you'll just write down your Dexterity modifier
you can right-click the skill or attack to select Advantage/Disadvantage
That gets discussed with the dm
Alr so that should wait till my first campaign?
Rather a session zero
Ok
your class determines your starting equipment, and you'd write down the attacks that corresponds to the weapons your character has. Your class also tells you what spells you have, if any. Read the entire section of the basic rules or Player's Handbook corresponding to your class: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes
What about passive wisdom
again, the basic rules have the information you need: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#PassiveChecks
passive checks are usually associated with a skill. The number usually written on the character sheet is your "Passive Wisdom (Perception)", also just known as "Passive Perception". Is this what you're talking about?
Yes
then you'd also add your proficiency bonus if you are proficient in the Perception skill. But otherwise it's correct.
that is correct. What you are picking and indicating with the checkbox is the skill proficiency.
Alignment is more for flavour. Also remember to be patient with questions.
The alignment options are all described here. You can basically just pick whatever you feel is appropriate.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Alignment
Ok thx
Though I’d shy away from any evil choices unless you’ve spoken to your DM about it.
I use alignment as more reputation of how others see the players
Oh ye i already know my characters chaotic good
The king has heard stories of your exploits. What do those stories tell him? That your chaotic in nature perhaps? That your deeds are malevolent?
hi im new to dnd
Evil characters can be really good if a good player gets their hands on them
o/
Hi Panda!
🙂
Cheers
i know little to nothing about dnd
I hereby recommend the Crap guide to dnd by jocat
I know much to a lot about DnD as do many here!
i want to find a campaign and learn as i play
OMG THAT REFERENCE THO
It fr the best video series ever
too confusing and overwhelming
Im reading stuff for getting started with dnd, already having in mind an interesting character concept, and I think my back story might be rich and interesting but I am not sure if it wont seem too pretentios? Its nothing too outstanding or irregular but rather a bit long and complex. May I share?
It's a fun series. Not necessarily the best for learning, but fun for getting enthused
Hello there.
Share away. I like reading backstories and characters
Ofc only a recommendation
i gonna gi
I am a new to D&D, read articles online for D&D Beyond and Avrae stuff.
I am looking for a hand-on experience, someone who could run me through it in an actual campaign.
Would anyone be kind enough to teach me? Much appreciated :3
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
I made a character too, and started the premade Frozen Sick camapgin (except I am the only one there.
I’d be happy to run a short thing for some new players, but I can only do text based games on discord. My life with kids is a touch too busy for anything else
I got most of the basics down, just unsure where to start.
That is alright! I am looking for text based.
As I said earlier, Avrae bot. :)
What about experience points?
Well I use Discord, Avrae, and DnDbeyond
Im guessing thats also for session zero?
Same!
Perhaps you could guide me with a campaign as a DM? I'll learn through a proper campaign
THATS PERFECT FOR ME
That's great! CheezyCheez and I with DungeonMasterDad! :D
I'd appreciate if you could teach us ^^
#find-a-game for advertising games, before the MODs descend
If someone is available to DM they will post in #looking-for-players
😭 I didn’t even mean to advertise lol
We're just looking for a teacher, that's all :3
We get that, but this is not the channel for finding or arranging games, and not everyone who is a DM on the server is wanting to find new players.
U called it lol
I understand.
That’s not a MOD but they are correct
I appreciate the heads up, I'll look into the relevant channels and avoid myself a warn.
Should we move to #750812887697588356 ?
Sure
Feel free to ping me
I would adopt them all but all my games are full
What am I supposed to put under “ideals” on my char sheet
Dont worry we’re managing the game already, we even found 2 other ppl
So it would be 25 yo male human bard. Being born in a small village where people lived peacefully everyone helped eachother and lived this way generation by generation and died the same way. The character seemed to have a natural talent to picking up new concepts and things to learn rather quickly, some would consider him being gifted in learning, and enjoyed it very much. Had both parents and with character resembled more of his empathetic understanding mother, then more conservative father who was percistant on teaching the son about the life reality and how simple humans cant reach for stars and rather make their life in more casual, time tested ways. When a character became a teenager he started dreaming about making his own way of living, while having an instrument and youthful fullish bravery for diving into world he had known nothing about. His sugestion was greated with conflicting oppinion of his father, but after a few days the father approached him himself, saying I missed out on my opportunities you shouldnt miss out on yours. And so he left the village and traveled far and long until he entered a city larger than he could ever picture in his mind. The city was one of places where many different people from many different cultures would meet eachother. He found his place an entertanment center that was resembling a circus/theater/bar.
Worked there as an entertainer/musician enhacing shows of other performers latter on having his own numbers where he lived with acrobats/fortune tellers/dancers/actors other entertainers as a community for a few years, until the city was attacked the center burned down and through out the chaos people ran for their lives and nobody was sure weather anyone survived. While escaping, hero, ran through unsafe areas where he encountered a group of bandits who didnt see any use of his belongings and thought of deciding what to do with him later, meanwhile told him to make himself useful. So the days and years passed and the hero befriended people in the group of criminals and figgured that his charm and artistic abilities are adding to the opperation weather its helping to distarct decieve victims or raise the mood of the company, also living in the different setting learning other people stories he understood that the good doesn't always look the same ways and rather opperate on his own set of morals then laws.
I think that would make a good all-rounder mainly functions on charisma. Empathetic and charming to people.
That's up to you. An ideal is a core belief of your character. Not all players use them, but choosing one from the rules or making one up yourself can act as a handy shorthand for deciding how your character would act in a given situation.
My brand new to D&D what should i do?

So how would I make a character?
Hello, guys!
I just joined the server! Me and a few friends are interested on playing a D&D campaign, we have played a few other systems before on short games, but we've never did an actual long campaign before, and we never used the D&D system.
So I was looking for tips and a little help on how to get into the game for the first time, really.
We want to use the 5e books, and we wanted to play online on vc, so I was wondering if there's some site or something that you recommend to play on, for keeping track of player sheets, map grids and etc. We're thinking of using roll20 for that.
Sorry if this is not the right channel to ask for help, its just that its my first time having contact with D&D and its a little bit overwhelming lol.
@lyric fjord Follow the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
Character sheets can be made via D&D Beyond or PDF: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Common tools are Discord for voice and dice, a VTT like Roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo for maps and tokens, D&D Beyond for character sheets. None of those specific ones are necessary, but you do need a way to communicate, a way to generate random numbers, and a way to track character info.
hi all new to D&D dicord channel. i've been roleplaying as a player for 14 years started off with pathfinder adventures i've been doing 5th edit d&d 5thed since came out. i am a member of rphaven i am already in a group and due to start a new game come jan 2024 and have been using d&d beyond for a couple of months.
The appropriate place to post characters for discussion is #character-discussion
oke
I see! so you recommend reading the basic rules on dndbeyond as a starter? I was checking the links you just sent and its really nice! I'm gonna read the player book as well, but that's gonna take a while lol
Yeah, the Basic Rules are all you need to get started. If you wanna plunk money down, the Player's Handbook is the next step.
How are yall doing
I’m new to dnd I don’t really know how to join a game cus most say “needs 5 years experience” I didn’t know dnd was a full time job with 5 years experience and a degree
I'm also new to DND I belive I played last year but stopped(due to some drama happening in that party), but I've been wanting to play recently since I enjoy this kind of stuff, but I don't know how to find people online to play with.
Find some friends to play with or family
Put yourself up as looking for DM in #find-a-game , you might get lucky.
Alrighty!
I’m trying to get a second group to play with as well I DM
Understandable!
I need 2-3 more players for a campaign I’m building
Your looking for players right?
Yes sir
I have a group of family I meet like 2 a month to play but I’d love to play more
Ooo!
Where are you located maybe we can set up a one shot
Hey so i wanted to ask about hit die
When i increase is level i get a new hit die soo that means that if my previous one was 10+ 3 and in new one i got 7+3 so my new hit point would be 23?
And whenever i like increase my constitution modifier like from +3 to +4 then the number of level i am at right now is also added to it, like if i am at level 8 now so my new hut point would be 31 then?
Am i right ?
This isnt the channel for setting up games
Please use dm or the appropriate channel
Sorry about that
At first level:
Hit Die Maximum + CON mod
Each subsequent level:
Roll hit die + CON mod
If your con mod increases, add one hp for each level
Ooh ok and what can be my max ablity score causein basic rules it is given that you cannot increase your ability score more than 20 but the modifiers are given for till 30?
there are special ways to increase it besides ability score improvements
and monsters of course
Your ABILITY SCORE cannot exceed 20 without a magic item or special feature
Modifier is still calculated the same way. Subtract 10 divide by 2 round down

Just noticed this channel exists, hello once again :)
getting the full tour here
what counts as the basics anyway? dice rolls? armor class?
Basically anything, yeah
I don't have a character, I have heard about skill checks, I've watched some people play and also had some fun in DnD with friends, it wasn't really playing though, we were basically just goofing around, still had a ton of fun though :)

well thats helpful
Just talking to an actual person instead of keep watching vids would be amazing
If you've got any specific questions, ask away!
I mean like talk talk would be helpful, my keyboard is doing funky stuff
Oh, we don't have a voice chat here. Sorry.
Oh damn
That's alright then, just would've been nice to find someone to actually introduce me
how can i edit the monodrome bot looking for dm?
i just messed up with the opt ins
Just add clarification in the thread
ty
Is there anyone I could add that is willing to help me get started?
Not trying to sound clingy but I really would like to know :)
We don't have time/bandwidth to teach folks one on one - please read through the information pinned in the channel and if you have specific questions, feel free to ask here.
Aight imma get familiar with the place first, thanks anyways though :D
I'm basically just looking for a group playing DnD that accepts newcomers like me, to get familiar with the game and or play maybe
You can look for games/groups to join in our Looking for Games channels - please read #find-a-game (carefully) to learn how to use those channels.
Or also just check your local game store, college, library etc
Okay, I just don't think anybody over here (Where I live) is actually playing DnD, I'm going to see what I find, again, thank you guys.
is it a bad idea to play a character that might be less effective in combat but that i find interesting, like a half-orc wizard or something for my first game?
secondly, how important does alignment end up being in-game? should i avoid evil alignments?
it's more of a loose guideline on how your character may act
Alignment is more used as a roleplay promt than mechanically impactful (at least in D&D 5th edition)
be aware that it's 9 options, to try and fit literally every viewpoint under. You could have completely opposing sides both be, say, lawful evil, despite both being lawful as well as both evil.
There are extremely few cases where alignments even matter, and even then, they're for kinda niche scenarios so don't bet on those happening.
good to know, thanks
half orc wizard isnt ineffective if built right
racial sterotypes are mostly circumvented in 5e
the majority of race class combos work
are there any examples of racial stereotypes in dnd i should be aware of? i only picked a half-orc wizard as an example cuz they get a strength bonus
thanks to the rule introduced in tasha's, you can assign the racial asis however you want
Avoid the whole mess of stereotypes and use Tasha's rules
any +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1
Half orc isn’t built for wizard it’s mainly Made for fighters and paladins
thats not true
half orc wizards work perfectly well
the stereotype is half orc fighters or paladins
but theres not much mechanical truth to that
so i could assign a half-orc's +2 strength and +1 constitution into any stat i want?
Yup
yes
if youre using dnd beyond, enable origin customization on the first page to be able to do that
is that in the base game or is this homebrew
Base game under Tasha's rules about ability scores
Officially, it's an optional rule.
gotcha
So you'd probably want to confirm with your DM whether that rule is permitted.
But it's pretty commonly used, in my experience.
it is offical, but an optional rule
Ya but they get pluses for Melee so it’s probably better if you use a Melee oriented character
not really?
Savage attacks is one of their racial bonuses
the only melee feature they get is savage attacks
which is actually a pretty minor bonus
Yea that’s the point
so ignoring it isnt a massive deal
Yeah, but they’re still mainly supposed to be used on fighters and paladins
I believe that’s what they intended half orc for
no race is "supposed" to be used for any class
the race may synergise ever so slightly better with that class
but that doesnt mean there is anything wrong or unintended abt using the race with a different class
That’s what I mean. It’s like probably better if you used half orc as a Melee character, then if you used it as a wizard or anything else along that lines.
Probably best to move this to #dnd-discussion
Okay folks - let's keep the channel clear for new to D&D folks to get help learning the core rules and mechanics.
Again, let’s take that debate to another channel, please.
So what events would me as a dm make too have people use medicine stat?
well the main written use is stablising someone
but just generally whenever someone needs to perform surgery on someone, heal someone, or remember anatomy
Hmm got it. Would like if someone is doing death saving throws and combat ends? Would they make a roll to try and stop
you could do that, yeah
its up to you, the rules dont really say what to do in that situation
Got it got it
Hi, I want to start playing, but I am as lost as a fish in the desert

^ start by giving the free basic rules a skim, maybe watch some folks play D&D on YouTube/Twitch, then try your hand at making a character sheet, then find a group to join and play with.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel (see id:browse to see the many channels we have dedicated to specific D&D topics)
another question
where I live there is no one to play with, at least not D&D, can I play it here?
you can play dnd online
where :o?
This article explains a few ways folks play D&D online: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
thank you very much
does anybody know what books would specifically be the best to get, i have the essentials kit, tasha’s cauldron of everything, xanathars guide to everything, and monsters of the multiverse. should i just get the players handbook and dm guide and monster manual?
Depends do you like dming
There are updated versions of those three books coming out sometime next year, but no specific date has been given yet.
But you'll be able to play using either set, so whether you want to grab the current ones or wait is up to you.
Hello all, new here and looking to join a campaign. I have not played D&D myself, but played similar turned based strategy games with campaigns such as mansions of madness. I have created a character on DnD beyond. What’s the best way to go about a shorter campaign to get my feet wet?
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here, if you’re looking for an online game.
Thank you.
FYI I wouldn’t exactly say dnd is a turn based strategy game
This is coming up, too:
https://discord.gg/PzPR55Gx?event=1180393449007091792
Thanks for the heads up.
Sup,how do I choose the battle master subclass I need to lvl up first the fighter class? Im playing dnd beyond
The free Basic Rules include one subclass for each class.
For fighters, that’s champion.
- You need to be level 3 fighter to choose a sub-class.
- You need to own the Battle Master sub-class (you can do this by either buying the Player's Handbook or instead of buying the PHB you can just buy the sub-class for $2)
You can buy any other subclass for like $2. Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
You can find Battle Master here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/players-handbook
Atleast they dont charge you 1 million dollars
Alternatively, if you’re in a campaign where Content Sharing is enabled and someone else in the group has purchased it, you’d be able to use theirs.
Btw dnd beyond isn’t the game, its simply a toolset for the game, which is dnd 5e
This shit sure is complex
What is even dnd 5e?
Ok fair enough
So in this bundle supposed to have battle master and many things well i dont have 30 dollars
You can get battlemaster on it’s own for 2 dollars
Scroll down the page.
I’m new to dungeons and dragons. I’ve never played a game but have been interested for a long time. I’ve watched critical role but I have no idea on how to play. Does anyone know where I should start?

thank you!
@smoky adder do you create your character for every campaign. Or is it assigned?
You can see what things each book will grant by scrolling down on its marketplace page. You can buy things piecemeal (such as buying battle master by itself), or buy whole books (which will grant everything from any book/s purchased)
Usually you create your character per-each campaign, as there's no real easy way to consistently port them from one DM to the next, other than Adventurer's League play, or Westmarch campaigns.
For example, another DM's campaign might...
not have a faction your character was a part of
not be okay with you starting with magic items (granted by the prior DM)
have the campaign start at X level, when you ended your prior campaign at a level higher than that
This actually might be a stupid question but are completely online campaigns rare? I mean like all typing, no voice call sort of things. I imagine they would be difficult, but I was just wondering
play by post is a genre
Is the character creation random or is it whatever you choose to create and imagine?
they are difficult however, in my experience - they've tended to fizzle out. Burnout is an issue.
Yeah I figured that was the main issue. Thank you for answering though!
Usually it's pretty freeform within what the DM allows. For example, a DM might say no partnered content or MTG content.
Yeah, constantly checking every single waking hour every day for if you need to take a reaction or make a ruling or explain something is... a lot for the person behind the DM screen to take, instead of a dedicated 2 to 5 hour conversation
Sorry to keep bothering you but may I ask how stats points are decided for each player?
usually one of three methods in the basic rules / phb for character creation
Standard Array is take 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8, and assign each to an ability of your choice
@topaz garnet hey dude avoid dungeon masters with large homebrew refering to people who created multiple worlds?
Point Buy is a customizable thing, which can replicate standard array, make 13s and 12s, or make 15 15 15 8 8 8.
what?
dude your bio
What about my bio has anything to do with what you said?
yea
Why are you telling me to avoid DM's as a question?
Why to avoid dungeon masters with large homebrew?
- anyway
then there's Rolled.
Roll 4d6 (four six-sided die, the cubes), and drop the lowest one (so for example, a 6, 5, 4, and 3, on the dice - you ignore the three, so you have a 6, a 5, and a 4, totalling a 15.
Do this 6 times in total, assign each score to an ability of your choice.
What are you talking about?
wait
You're making no sense, dude.
He misread avid as avoid
His bio says avid not avoid
...
yeah that was extremely confusing
Anyway, Tyrant, the methods to decide ability scores for player characters, you got all that?
go ahead
What is a natural? Like when people say that’s a natural 19
the number on the d20
so if you make an attack roll, and the d20 itself (whether digital RNG or an actual physical d20) shows 20, that's a natural 20
As opposed to the total, which is the number on the dice plus any modifiers
it's a colloquialism
so a 20 on the d20 for an attack roll - or just, a natural 20 on the attack roll, is a critical hit
ohh okay so what if I try to charm someone if I roll a 7 for say. Would I add my charm stat to the roll??
however, only Attack rolls and Death Saving Throws (a special kind of saving throw, no ability, very little interactions to them) care about natural 1 or natural 20. There's no special interaction for ability checks or regular saving throws rolling a specific number on the d20.
If you wanted to persuade someone, the dm might call for a charisma (persuasion) check
In that case, you would roll a d20, then add your charisma modifier, then if you’re proficient in persuasion, add your proficiency bonus
how are bonuses and modifiers generated?
Your modifier in a certain stat depends on the score in that stat
10-11 is +0, 12-13 is +1, 14-15 is +2, 16-17 is +3, 18-19 is +4, and 20 is +5
It goes negative as well
Proficiency bonus is a number based on your character level
Well, first it comes down to... What are you really trying to do. Because remember, a Dungeon Master runs the game, and can think like an actual person.
So, if you're trying to, say, haggle the price of a sword down by a couple of gold pieces, it might call for a Charisma (Persuasion) check.
If you're trying to frighten them into selling it for lower, that'd be Charisma (Intimidation).
If you're trying to scam someone or lie, it'd be Charisma (Deception).
All of those are Charisma checks, but each have a (Skill) next to them - if you're proficient in that skill, you add a special bonus, your Proficiency bonus, on top of the check.
It scales from +2 all the way to +6
A helpful thing I've figured out is
"Every even up, every odd down"
Yeah
So, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20, are the important steps for positive ability modifiers.
10 and 11 are both a +0 modifier
12 and 13 are both a +1 modifier
and so on
and I’m assuming my stats can be improved as I play?
And every odd down -
10 is +0.
9 and 8 are -1.
7 and 6 are -2.
And so on.
As you advance in level, you'll gain the Ability Score Improvement class feature. Basically, you get two stat points to put in your ability scores - +2 to one score, or +1 to two different scores, can't go past 20.
At levels 4, 8, 12, 16, and 19, you get an ASI (ability score increase)
For all classes?
(Rogue and Fighter get an extra or two)
Yes, plus fighter getting an extra few
Does rogue? Never noticed that
I think at 10th
Neat
Your DM will use either XP or Milestone
XP is you earn xp for combat and some other things, and level up at certain thresholds
Milestone is you level up when your dm says so
XP is the DM gives you XP when they decide - so, killing monsters is the classic example, but surviving traps, or otherwise resolving encounters like persuading bandits to just leave instead of fight, could also grant XP.
Generally a story “milestone”
I'm currently multiclassing as Fighter and Warlock.
One martial-based one plus one magic one.
Milestone is literally just "DM says when you level up"
Your ASIs will be based on your individual class levels then
Can I play solo?
Check the class tables for when you get ASIs
Not really
D&D is a group collaborative game.
Ok then no bother
I was DMing for the first time and accidentally told everyone they levelled up lol
They're technically class features - a consistent metric is, when you reach 4th level in a class, the ASI feature is granted at that level of that class. So, for example, a 3/3 multiclass is total level 6, but hasn't yet reached level 4 in either specific class which is when they'd get their ASI.
If you don't have friends/relatives to play with in real life then there is the option of finding groups online to play with.
There's a method which you have to buy the instructions for, have the resources for, and be a DM for yourself while pushing back bias. It's extremely difficult and ill-advised, in lieu of regular DND.
If you don't want to play with others than I recommend you play D&D video games like Baldur's Gate, but that's severely limited by what the developers have designed and written. Those games like the fluid improvisation that D&D offers.

You’re limited by your class levels, as normal
"Can I use every class skills or magic in multiclass"
what are you trying to communicate with this? I don't understand
I recommend you watch the "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos.
Read the rules first.
how do dms decide what would miss or hit something
But as for the second, ASI is granted at specific levels in your class. You have to be a 4th level X to get the ASI feature. Then if you become a 4th level Y as well, you also get the ASI from that level in that class.
DMs don’t
oh
You roll to see if your attacks hit
Using a standard melee weapon attack as a example, you would roll d20+Str mod+prof bonus if proficient
All creatures have an Armor Class, or AC.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ArmorClass
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MakinganAttack
"When you make an attack, your attack roll determines whether the attack hits or misses. To make an attack roll, roll a d20 and add the appropriate modifiers. If the total of the roll plus modifiers equals or exceeds the target's Armor Class (AC), the attack hits. The AC of a character is determined at character creation, whereas the AC of a monster is in its stat block."
If the results meets or beats the enemy’s AC (armour class), you hit
Hello
Hi
Think of DND like...
Someone telling a story, acting as the world, people, and monsters, and events, the DM is the 'director'.
And the others are individual characters in this story, but they have agency, they can actually say what they want to say, for better or worse.
The rules help to provide consistency and some measure of power scaling. So we don't have "that kid" in the playground making up a tag-proof shield, or the age-old "i hit you - did not - did so - did not" argument
So i get 2 charisma points
Ok,though i understand nothing and dont worry its my fault not yours
What class?
17 total charisma is great for starting out as a charisma based caster
So 15 + 2 = 17 charisma
But in dnd beyond it says im still 15
No
Bard
+2 is your Charisma Modifier
so do characters have like signature attacks or do I make them up
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Isnt it +3?
You just have your basic attack. You can flavour that however you want, tho
no sir
you have a score of 15, meaning a modifier of +2.
If you increased your score to 16 or even 17, you'd then have a modifier of +3.
Nope. 16 would be +3
Cause of the extra 2 from half elf
It's recommended
Yeah and from 2 from half elf = 17 = +3

I’ll get to it
Yeah that sounds right
Not sure why dnd beyond is showing it wrong
Read the Basic Rules because it's very hard to explain things to you when you have no idea what we're talking about.
Yeah I’ll check it out
Where do you think i can change it
Fighters, Barbarians, Rogues, and Monks, will for the most part just be attacking with their weapons (a monk can use their fists effectively with martial arts as well)
They can get features that improve or accentuate bits of it. For example, a Rogue does a single attack that does massive damage at once, whereas a Fighter eventually gets to do a lot of attacks
Yeah?
Hang on I’ll dm you so you can send a screenshot
Ah.
If you're on DNDBeyond, it'll automatically calculate it for you. Or, should, at least. You'd input the score you have, and then racial bonuses, other improvements, and so on, get added on top for you.
It was likely not set up correctly
#ddb-support
Ah
Kinda funny tbh
Sure they didn't enable customize origin and not assign the newly freely-assignable bonus?
Yeah I missed that sorry
Are the races in the the basic rules the only ones or do certain campaigns include special ones
many sourcebooks include more races, such as Monsters of the Multiverse adding Goblins, Centaur, Changeling, Genasi (of the four elemental kinds), Minotaur, Orc, Tabaxi (cat-people), and so on
Some DMs may allow or disallow certain ones in their campaign
The basic rules only include limitrd options. More available in the books
If you strap a shield to your back, should it not give you at least some AC?
No, you need to be wearing it properly on a free hand.
I’m new to dnd and want to know if my back story for my character is to generic or bad
Can one of yall rate it or tell me how it is it’s for a hexblade warlock
Sure
Can I dm it to you it’s kinda long
Maybe post it in #character-discussion
Ok
whats the difference between starter set and essestials kit?
They're both starter sets, but from different years.
Also maybe to elaborate... The Starter Set is more recent. It has all you need to play, and I believe that the consesus is that it's the "better" option from all the sets. It gives you dice, premade characters, the basic rules and a story to play.
Hello?
Hey. 🙂
hi
Hey yall, hows it going? Is there any events going on?
im good
Thats nice to hear 👍
As far as I can tell, the server is currently advertising the calendar event from D&DB
Ahhh
Hey im good, how are you?
im doing great, i just found this server randomly lol
So buy the started kit?
How am I able to create a custom character tho
You can with DND beyond
if you want. you dont even need that tho
The sets come with pre-made
If you want to create og characters there's no stopping you
But I suggest you use the basic rules first before you start making other characters
This:
the basic rules include rules for making characters
You can always use your own characters. The set is meant to be playable with just Pen & Paper (GET IT?!) .
So try 1 campaign with premade first!
The premade are just alternative characters you want to use if you don't have time
but it takes some of the fun away imo
With the essential kit u get the blank character sheets?
i dont think so
ohh
but you can find the pdfs online
Just be aware that creating your own character "manually" will take some effort to dig through all the according rules. Most newbies find that overwhelming. Therefore I would suggest doing it on something like D&D Beyond.
where can i get that
Your Gm/Dm will provide it
Ok
ohhh okok 👍
We can also send you some characters if youd like
D&D Beyond has pre-made characters
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
What is that massive URL? Seems very fishy...
Lemme check
person just copied a ad link
How about deleting it?
K
Seems like a Google Shop link to a product.
Yea
But you'll want the Starter Set with the BLUE dragon on the cover.
Don't buy anything yet. The Basic Rules is free.
Wait, that was a dumb thing to say.
People know how to use Google.
It's the box set with the blue dragon in front. 🙂

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
This.
I use the basic rules to make my dragonborn paladin since back then I was planning to play as a genetically diff thri kreen. I gave her a lot of backstory too and a different alignment that makes her unique.
Dude, just link the product directly from Wizards...
https://dnd.wizards.com/products/starter-set
K
You roleplay as your character.
You have free will to choose what you are, do goofy or silly stuff. It makes the campaign more fun
there are also rules to guide play
This is the set I’ve been linking
Then it's the right set.
Thank you
I suggest you start with the basic rules pdf since it's generally beginner friendly
My dad thinks the essential kit is better cos it has a bit of everything in it. Is that better or no?
anyone playing now or open for players?
Check #find-a-game
What does "everything" mean?
I’m not sure
It's just the essentials
starter kit has the same kind of stuff
Which do I tell him to buy?
its just newer
I can't speak for everyone. But I've seen a few comparison videos and stuff, and they mostly prefer the newer one, because it's also structured differently.

is it hard to find a group?
Nope
It can take some time. It's a bit like online dating. You are going to spend multiple hours a week (usually) with these people, so you want to make sure you all vibe well, and it can take time to find or make that.
Also sadly some online groups are a bit flakey.
Looking into oneshots, Adventure League and westmarches can be a good way to join lower commitment games and see if you find people whose play style clicks with yours, and then you slowly network and form a group together from recommending each other to games.
Or you cna be lucky and hit it off with the first group you join.
Communication is a key part of all of this and session 0s and chatting with the DM before joining can be a good way to feel out if you all suit each other before commiting to a game.
dang i was hoping to get some experience as a player so i could curate as a DM better. I've been writing up a campaign for a few months since I beat BG3 (I went on a binge and learned a ton of FR lore to do so).
Could always try out oneshots, AL or westmarches and such. Or just jump into DMing. The community sometimes hypes up how much a DM needs to be experienced or more skilled than the players, but that's not true. DMs are players, and it was perfectly the norm for a DM and a group of friends all being new to the game and all figuring it out together.
does the conjure animals spell have the limit like wild shape that you can only summon things you know of or can you just summon a dinosaur out of nowhere?
The intent is that you pick literally one of the options listed, e.g. you pick “2 beasts of challenge rating 1 or lower”, and the DM then chooses the beasts.
But nothing restricts those from being only creatures you’ve seen.

Welcome! In the bot post above, you'll find some very helpful links, including the free basic rules. The basic rules include everything you need to make a character and understand the basics of the game. Purchasing additional books beyond that will give you more customization options, and explain some of the more complex rules, but those are optional
If you do wish to purchase those additional books, its recommended that you start with the Player's Handbook. Then, from there you can get Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything for even more options.
Thank you so much I’m checking em out rn
Awesome. If you have any questions, please let us know

Hi Brain Trust, I need your help - I am playing a Level 8 Light Domain Cleric. I have picked the Feat Ritual Caster (Cleric) How meany spell are you allowed to pick?
When you first take the feat, you get two ritual spells, that are both 1st level. You can add more if you find spell scrolls or other sources of spells that meet the criteria.
On D&D Beyond I assume?
Yea
That is because you have the ability to add more in the future. Once you use the 3rd slot, a 4th one will appear, and so on. You just have to leave that blank until you find a new spell to add to this feat
Wait isnt cleric already a ritual caster
Yup.
Yes, they are, so picking ritual caster (Cleric) doesn't actually accomplish much
Why did you pick Ritual Caster (Cleric)?
It could give you access to ritual spells from other classes, such as Find Familiar. There's other methods of doing so, but I wouldn't call it redundant
Well, you wouldn't need to keep those spells prepared in order to ritual cast them.
But yeah, choosing a separate class could give you access to spells you wouldn't get otherwise.
how to not get group with edgelords
Finding the right group is always tough. It takes patience and honesty, being forthright when you're meeting everyone and setting expectations.
Communicate your expectations up front with the entire group.
The better you can communicate what you're looking for (and what you aren't), the better you'll be able to find the right match.
And avoid any unpleasant surprises down the road.
what to do when finding edgelord
Finding a good group is like dating. D&D is a social game so it may take time and many tries to find people you get along well with
oh and where can i find general groups that players can just join, i see the chanel thing but im unsure which to go into for this
Check #find-a-game
i mean the channel where dms post and then players ask to join, just completely standard, when i look in find a game channel its to confusing
#find-a-game is a list of resources for finding games, and instructions on how to use our game finding channels. Just read through and follow the instructions

Hello, am Aires and I recently got the three core rulebooks on Black Friday and want to start playing the game properly with people. I've admitedly only played DnD or any TTRPG game Solo on my own time using tools like how that "Me myself and Die" series on Youtube does. While I was happy playing by myself I grew curious about group play and if I would like it or not. Am a bit of a hermit and don't really have any friends I keep in contract with but am open to try socializing in DnD. While am currently only looking to be a player right now, I do want to try being a DM once I've figured out how the game works. Part of the joy of playing solo for me was the ability to tailor make my own world and adventure. But enough about my niche way of playing DnD I want to know where to start on this hobby.

What’s ‘ me myself and die?’
It's a youtube series where a voice actor Trevor Devall plays TTRPGs Solo by using systems like Mythic GM Emulator, he hasn't played DnD on the show (Not sure if mentioning this series is against the rules) but he does play a few TTRPGs on the channel. Am honestly suprised he hasn't played 5E yet on the channel.
Hello all new to the channel and hope to navigate this discord channel to learn how to find a campaign
Hey, new here as well.
I've found #looking-for-players to be helpful. Though, in my experience, it could take a while to find a worthwhile group, so try a bunch out and be patient 😉 (also hmu if you find something fun, I'd gladly join too lol)
With lineages are you able to play as them at the beginning, like start of with it or something or do you need to get it throughout the game? Or is it dms choice or something?
Also, are you able to play as something from a book that the story isn’t based off? I don’t know how to describe it, but I want to try be a Owlin Hexblood but I don’t know if I can
Whether content from an expansion sourcebook is allowed is up to the dm
And yes, you can choose a lineage from the start
When theorycrafting a character, its best to have a more common backup race at the ready if using something setting-dependant
Diamond Throne?
sorry if its a dumb question but is it possible to start a game with 1 dm and 1 player or do you need an entire party to play
You can play however you want as long as everyone at the table has fun
But it's not the recommended way
its possible, but at least 3 players is recommended
ok thanks
Duet games, is that the term? Someone's got a list.
yeah
Hello! Sooooo I've never played DND before but I've always wanted to, my husband used to play it but he stopped (his group disbanded) and I was wondering how it all worked/how to get into it. It seems really interesting but also seems like a lot. Heh. 😅
Hiii i’m new to DND and I’m trying to learn how to be a dungeon Master as my friends want to play it with me none of us know what we’re doing and I just wanna know how to be a dungeon, master so I can make the adventure fun
Seems like we're kinda in the same boat lol
I dunno how to play at all and it's been years since my husband's played.
But he talks about playing it ALL the time and I'm honestly into that kinda stuff, I love games like DND.
Same here, I like the fact that it can bring out a whole new world filled with fun and adventure
have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages of this channel
Alright 👌

I'll have a look
Yo.
Are the races listed there the only ones you can play? I'm just asking cuz everywhere I look, the number and types of races are vastly different
there are many more races than the ones in the free basic rules
Like needing Info for the Harengon in order to use the race specifically, right?
yeah, you would previously have needed access to the book to use the race
Welp, guess I'll buy the book then in the future.
you can also buy content individually on dnd beyond
generally for abt 2 dollars each
Word...don't have 2 bucks though atm.
Let’s get things back on topic, please.
My apologies...
How does the find a game in the discord chat workk
Check #find-a-game
Hi I'm new to um playing dnd digitally, it sounds like alot of fun so i looked around in hopes to find some way to get into it and i heard that people play over discord. i'm not too sure how to phrase it but i guess im looking for a group that wouldn't mind a newbie?
Have a look in our #find-a-game channels

Can i change the size of my level 1 mage hand?
Like can i have just a teeny tiny mage hand?
Or a ginormous mage hand?
No
basically
things only do what they say they do
It’s a magic hand that does what the spell says, if you want a big magic hand you’ll need bigby’s hand spell
Mage hand is small
I mean what if my character wants to eat pizza with his mage hand so his normal hand doesn’t get dirty?
Or he wants to pick up an ant?
Then it can do that
look
the spell does what it says it does
you can flavor it as other things, as long as you're not trying to change the mechanical benefits
For example, someone might want yellow lightning bolts instead of blue ones - perfectly fine, changes literally nothing, still the same rules and game balance bounds.
Sure why not
Again
The spell only does what it says it does
You can flavor it however you want outside of its mechanical benefits and limitations
and it just says "a hand"
so we can assume it's roughly the size of someone's hand
so, pizza-capable
As long as you're not trying to do:
A: Something the spell says you can't do with it
B: Something the spell doesn't say or suggest you can do
You should be fine
what to do after someone in the party atttention seeking and says i keep doing to much when im literally standing around i even do less in combat and only mostly do story and i let them take initiative, they also are a mary sue, how do i fix the situation before the campaign falls into itself because of this, and what to tell the DM
Hey im brand new to dnd and i want a hand to hand type of chater what class whould that be ?
anything i think
oh class well then maybe barbarian or warrior, they would be trained in it i think, anyways iw ill head off to high school now so i cant respond today in some time i have a test today
do you mean unarmed fighting or melee fighting
Depends on what you want
i want a melee
There's freedom on what type of class you want to be
if unarmed I'd say Monk
Monk,paladin,barbarian,fighter
The basic rules pdf has stuff that you might like
i made a sheet with a fighter but im 100% sure i mad my sheet is horrible
or charter sorry
It's alright, we start at somewhere
Hi, I'm a little new here, I do dabble in some dnd but I never really participated in any group only solo, so yeah, this is my first time with actual people, I have my character sheet saved here, can someone help me correct some things?
have you read the basic rules?
Sure
@fleet field not really ima go look into it thank you
theyre linked in the pinned messages of this channel
Is it okay to share my char. stats here? Or should I dm it?
guys how to fix a situation where a mary sue is slowly making the campaign fall apart
maybe ask for feedback in #character-discussion
talk to the dm abt it
yes i did but thats his gf that is even more experienced than me so i think im gonna end up being kicked or have to watch the campaign fall apart, thing is it was so good until dm introduced mary sue
i just leave the campaign i guess
Hoolioyo what level is your character?
why do you ask
Just want to know
level 6
Aighty
I think you should try playing with people who also has some experience just like you
im new, i meant level in the campaign
OH
someone's character level doesn't innately mean experience with the hobby as a whole
you've got veterans rolling up level 1 characters for PAB:TSO after all
is there any rules in picking a race ?
Can you clarify what you're asking for?
the Race is an important part of character creation, yes
but there's plenty of options in total, and a decent few in the basic rules
like i wanna make a dragon born but if you think about the class disciptions dont really fall under the races ideals i guess
the only rules for the race is the mechanical benefit
explain a lil please
like dragonborn resisting a damage type and having a breath weapon
or elves having fey ancestry and trance
it doesn't mean you have to roleplay your X-race character as Y culture
oh ok thank you i appreciate it
Any race can be any class
I just used dnd beginner character creation in dnd and beyond...my strength is in -1, is that some sort of mistake?
You presumably have a Strength score of 9 or 8.
ahh wait, I just checked again it just has a disadvantage of -1, sorry about that. so yeah it is in 8
Your Modifier would then be -1, so you'd alter any strength check, saving throw, or any strength-based attack, by -1
And it's not "disadvantage", that's a discrete mechanic
ohhh, I get it, thank you
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, assuming your character doesn’t need strength
Each ability score has distinct uses
There are so many cool looking campaigns in Finding players but all of them don't match my timezone :((
Maybe try some of the D&D server advertised in #looking-for-community. They may have D&D games playing at different times and they may even have Play By Post games.

yo I'm new to dnd have any idea where to start?
Check the pinned messgaes here in the channel - they have some useful links and resources including a link to the free basic rules.
I recommend starting by skimming through those rules (particularly pay attention to how to create a character and the the combat section).
Then maybe watch some videos of folks playing D&D (on YouTube/Twitch) to see how the game plays
Then try your hand at making a character sheet.
Then go find a group to play with (read #find-a-game to learn how to use this server's Looking For Game channels)
thanks for the help mate
Aye also welcome
Heya! So just got finished with my first round of BG3 and have literally fallen in love with DnD, anywhere I could possibly get started

Hello, is it possible to play dnd on mobile? Ion have a laptop/pc and i really wanna play dnd so bad 😭
Yes but you'll have to tell the dm first since some dm require you to have a camera or a laptop/pc
Can swarmkeeper rangers change the appearance of there swarm as to, for example, if you find out an enemy is afraid of something through whatever means you change your swarm to look like what they are afraid of?
i wanna play the dnd and learn the rules as i go on
As written you'd pick the appearance of your swam when you choose the subclass, but besides that you'd have to ask the DM whether they allow you to change the swarm (or let you pick a swarm of something that can change it's appearance)
That could be possible with the right group, although a basic knowledge is required and welcome.
id like to just blindly play dnd for the first time
not irl tho because i dont own physical dnd
i dont plan on owning that
and im not a big fan of mic
too mistrusting of revealing my own vocals
You can get away with not owning the books if the DM has them, specially online. But I have to be honest - There are more than enough groups willing to welcome a newbie and guide you through the game, but you also play with other people, who would surely appreciate a bit of effort on your side. 🙂
Just remember: Dungeons and Dragons isn't quite like a multiplayer video game. It takes hours of set up for the DM and is another several hours of time commitment for all the other players. If you don't take the time to learn the basic rules, you'll be holding everyone else up who's already prepared to play
Also playing online without voice will definitely be a big challenge. There's a lot of things that need to be communicated and the game can be slow as-is. If you rely on text, it drags out the game for everyone. That's fine if you find a group that works that way, but it's not the norm.
can i get away by also not showing my face?
Exactly this. People, specially the DM, invests a lot of time. You could at least watch a short video on YouTube that explains how combat roughly works, how a skill check works (both are quite easy to learn) and then at least read what your character does.
VB Virtual Cable certainly doesnt speed up the process i admit
Camera is often not needed. There's a lot of people doing voice only. But typing is just that much slower.
as i said before. vb virtual cable doesnt really speed things up
unfortunately
I honestly have no idea what that is. lol
virtual microphone
where it uses audio from a computer
i did notably use it on text to speech software
back then
Oh yeah, I see. Basically Stereomix. I get it. And what about it? Do you rely on the text to speech software?
I mean, without going into why or what, you might be able to find a group willing to acomodate your needs out there. You might even find a group with similar needs and reasons, D&D is a very inclusive hobby. You just have to be upfront about it and communicate it so that people know what to expect.
hmmm
heres one challenge i gotta deal with if i were to succesfully be prepared for dnd
and that is to try not to be a gary stu
its not a promise
What I'm saying is if you need that kind of stuff for "special needs" reasons (sorry, I'm not a native speaker, no offense but I don't know how to put it), you might find a group that is very welcoming towards that, or people who might also need creative ways to play and everybody will be on the same page. But you can't just look for a average joe group and then surprisingly ask of them to accomodate these things after the session started. I hope you get what I'm trying to say.
Also, being aware that there's a risk of tying to be a Gary Stu, is already a good step. But usually a DM should be able to guide you or even point out these things before they get out of hand. Just try to be a good person towards your fellow players and remember that you're all playing the same game to have fun and everybody deserves the spotlight and their own cool moments. 🙂
guess i better let my power hungry needs be controlled then
xDD
as in dont let it create the ruin
or cause the imbalance
Yeah, I mean, no offense but you might need to get into the right mindest. "I'm not bothering with the rules" and "I want to be the main character" are two very common and well known behaviour that people usually don't agree with long term 😉
damn those two?
and i sound like some evil dark lord in here
but alr
ill keep that in mind regardless
Sadly, it's a "thing", yeah. It's the nature of the game. You get to be cool and do cool stuf, so it can be tempting to want to live out your very own power fantasy. But it's a collaborative game, everybody gets to make decisions and do stuff, so the whole group thing is very important to D&D. Even the DM gets accused of railroading if he forces "his way" too much on the party.
got it

So I have zero friends and I don't know how to play DnD. Where do I start?
Also are there any online RPG's, forum RPG's or MMORPG's similar in nature to DnD that I can try playing?
I have played a bit of BG3 and I really loved the character creation aspect and the choice-making aspect, and I do wonder if there is a video game that works like that but happens online/mmorpg.
Start here. Start with the basic rules. They're free. Forum RPG's aren't quite comparable. Games are also quite hard to find that really capture the feeling, unless it's BG3. If it's D&D you want, I would strongly suggest you read into the basics and get into a group that takes you in as a newbie for an online session. It can get quite video game-y with the online tools.
Thank you.
Hi, I'm new into DnD but I've played a campaign or two, I was interested in buying books/campaigns but I'm not sure if I'd do it by DnD Beyond for the character creation (it eases it a lot) or if I should buy the physical book. Any help?
D&DB is probably the easier way and very practical in regards to usability. The downside is you never truly own the content or have no influence what happens with it (changes, retcons, new stuff coming in 2024) and you can't control what D&DB allows you to do/use or not.
So you're trading content safety and physical ownership for ease of use, acessability and shareability of the content with friends.
It's actually because of the characters, spells... that kind of content that can be overwhelming, mostly to newcomers to the game, having in mind that I'm new and the DM in my friends group campaigns, so I don't really know what should I do
I get it, in the end I think I'll end up buying things at both places then
I bought one of the bigger sets on D&DB during a sale (hundreds of dollars, mind) and had some issues with the reworked books and how OneD&D (next year's update) might affect the platform, so I have also decided to double buy everything as a book for "safekeeping" reasons. It's certainly lot the cheapest decision.
But yeah, that is also the reason why we all still play with D&DB and why I run my games on there. The whole set up process is so much more convenient for me and the players, and I'd rather not create a plethora of characters with a dozen books in hand.
Yeah, I get it, it might not be the cheapest but safest and more comfortable way to get it all
Understood hahahaha, thank you very much mate!
I'd say stick to online for now, see how that goes, and if you really catch the DM fever (or are the designated forever DM), think about expanding the collection. But straight for practical reasons, D&DB is your best bet. 🙂
Thank you! This conversation is what I needed
Hey guys. I’m new here. I’ve played D&D a couple times and have to put my current campaign on hold. I’m looking for another campaign to join
Then #find-a-game is your friend. 🙂
Thank you
#looking-for-community is another option.
Hey I got starter set for Lost mines of phandalin where can I get grid maps for my players
Are you playing in person or online?
Nope
... what other option is there besides "in person" or "online"?
can i use repeating shot on a melee weapon if i throw it?
No, for that you want Returning Weapon
noted
A weapon must have the Ammunition Property in order to put the Repeating Shot infusion on it
A weapon must have the Thrown Property in order to put the Returning Weapon infusion on it
if i throw it as an improvised weapon attack that doesnt count to those right
Hi all! Looking to join into some campaigns that accept new players I know a little what I’m doing but not much lol
It would not count.
😭 I just want to throw many longswords

The only two features I know of that can put the Thrown property on a weapon that does not currently have it are the level 6 feature of Path of the Giant Barbarian, and the 4th option of the Wild Surge from the Path of Wild Magic Barbarian
😭 thank you then
Okay so if i grabbed duel weilder to ignore the light property of duel weilding, can i throw a spear as a ba?
Yes.
ty
Yes. If you have the Duel Wielder feat, then spears qualify for Two Weapon Fighting, which means you can throw one or both as part of the two weapon fighting rules
Im gonna do that and just use flavor to make em longswords (without their damaging properties ofc)
When you take the Attack action and attack with a
lightmelee weapon that you're holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a differentlightmelee weapon that you're holding in the other hand. You don't add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative. If either weapon has the thrown property, you can throw the weapon, instead of making a melee attack with it.
if i also got polearm master could i use that attack too(if i didnt use theba to throw another)?
"When you take the Attack action and attack with only a glaive, halberd, quarterstaff, or spear, you can use a bonus action to make a melee attack with the opposite end of the weapon."
Yes, Pole Arm Master does what it says it does, and you are using one of the weapons that is listed in its effect. You don't need to have your other hand free to do this attack, if that is what you were asking
if i threw it, could i use the feature (I know it sounds dumb)
Just remember, you only ever have one bonus action!
indeed
No. You need to use "the opposite end of the weapon" that you made the original attack with, so if you threw one spear, you can't use your BA to attack with the other under Polearm Master rules (but you can with Two Weapon Fighting rules, if you have the Duel Wielder feat)
Ah it was a good try, ty
If i have returning weapon and duel wielder, can i throw the spear, it immediately return and then i throw it as BA again
No. The two weapon fighting rules require you to use 2 different weapons
ah blasted
When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you're holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you're holding in the other hand. You don't add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative.
If either weapon has the thrown property, you can throw the weapon, instead of making a melee attack with it.
can i put enhanced weapon and returning weapon on the same weapon
Moreover, no object can bear more than one of your infusions at a time
Unfortunately no.
indeed unfortunate but that one isnt that bad
what other things give me superiority dice?
The fighter's Battle Master subclass, the fighter's Superior Technique Fighting Style, and the Martial Adept feat.
ty
By extension, the Fighting Initiate feat gives you a choice of one Fighting Style that you haven't already picked, so it could also give you Superiority Dice if you weren't a level 2 fighter
W
hi
hii
can i join the convo ???
yes but it was more a open and close question #character-discussion were talking on names if you just wanna talk

Dw its a lovely thing to be part of
I just don't know where to start ;-;
I've been sent the rules books but honestly I don't know if it's more worth to read the 300 pages books or not
Read above the bot send something
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
too much
Handbooker helper
By critical role explains everything in easy bits
And very easily to understand
And if questions should arise you can always reach out on the server for help
so much info...
Thats normal at start
D&D is a game of rules. You cannot avoid reading the rules.
You don't need to read all of the Basic Rules, just the four first chapters on character creation.
Thats why take things slow
The Dm is usually making sure the important rules are all followed
;-;
In the end its worth the grind
the returning weapon infusion, can you choose to make it come back or its always gonna come back instantly
I watched the Handbooker Helper on Sunday night. It was very helpful. 😅
Thats a good start
immedieatly after using
noted ty
Can only point to the sources
Hey everyone 👋
I was looking for DnD events in Germany and found your wonderful group. Can’t wait to join new adventure, so if you are in Berlin too - hit me up
Wishing lots of fun
your dm usually but you can also post in #character-discussion
I don't have a group I just have a character sheet,
never had a dm that accepted me 🤷♀️
Ayee thats why character discussion so people can help
And finding the perfect group takes time
take out the perfect
just finding a group is hard
That aswell
especially since I can't get any groups irl ;-;
Theres also digital dnd hosted via virtual table tops
that's why I joined this server in desperate hope to find something like that
if i throw a spear do i use the 1d8 or 1d6
Check out iamrazorwing's guide to finding games online:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
the damage die for the weapon
1d6, always.
1d6 since you're not using it two-handed.
oh ?
thank you
good to know
Versatile damage is specifically for melee attack BTW.
The 1d8 is from the Versatile property, which says this:
A damage value in parentheses appears with the property--the damage when the weapon is used with two hands to make a melee attack.
noted
Aye tyty
thanks, i hope i'll find a groups that'll be a bit pedagogue and care to explain the basics as we play
you will manage
A lot of groups are beginner-friendly even if they're not explicitly advertised as such.
The more you learn on your own about the rules the more it helps the DM.
So if you see one you're interested in, you can always ask.
But yeah, DMs usually get their pick of the litter, so showing that you've learned the basics on your own may give you an edge.
my ADHD needs someone to teach me...
probably won't get grabbed by anyone
At a bare minimum, I’d recommend learning these common terms, what to do on your turn, and how your character’s own abilities work.
Learn at your own pace. Again, Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos on Youtube is great.
that's already too much
and I don't understand how the find a game channel work
anyway have a good day everyone
Which part of it don't you understand?
no one talks in it
Wut?
