A more common house rule would be to be able to use healing potions as a bonus action
That makes a lot of sense, it's not like a nat1 would really be an event people looked forward to
Except maybe as a somewhat comedy moment? But even then the person that rolled it would be inconvenienced
Exactly, it's just negative after negative for something out of your control
Maybe fun for the DM and others, but not for you
So players would be able to move, potion then attack someone?
Yeah, some tables do that
RAW (Rules as written), drinking one takes an action, so you either drink or attack
That seems like fun- err, quality of life? I can get why people would like that to have
Yeye
because isn't a health potion's effectiveness* also somewhat dependant on dice roll?
Yeah, the basic pot is a 2d4+2 health recovered

hi everyone, I am totally new to dnd and wanted to give it a try online. I have just one question as a newcomer in this serv : Do I have to read the player handbook to learn the game ?
The Player's Handbood or Basic Rules are both advisable to read, at least partially, to understand the rules
Ok thanks!
Hello there, I am a new player and have only played 1 time(ended in tpk half hour in) and was wondering how to find a party that plays DnD online using discord?
I do that and nothing happens
Please read the instructions in that channel, it'll explain how to post for a game
Hi, I am new to DnD looking to learn how to get started. Have the essentials kit, read the rules and created my first character. Whats next?

I have a question and I need some advice. I really want my character to become a College of Glamour Bard, because the features sound really fun and it ties with the backstory. However, we already have a cleric that has Twilight Sanctuary. Would it be a bad idea to go College of Glamour?
I don't think so, no. ✌️
Clerics and Bards have a pretty different toolkits so I wouldn't be worried about too much overlap. In addition, I personally don't see a lot of overlap between the general themes/mechanics of Twilight Domain Clerics and College of Glamour Bards (if that's what you meant)?
If you were really worried about it, you could always just bring it up with the group and get their thoughts. They'll have more context than us.
It's mostly that the Temp HP from Twilight Sanctuary and Mantle of Inspiration kind of overlap, and since they don't app to each other, it might not be all that good. The DM also argues that it probably won't be that useful. The free disengage is kind of neat, tho.
Oh, I got you know.
Yeah, they wouldn't stack. So that's a fair point to make.
At the same time, Clerics really don't get that many uses of Channel Divinity, so having more temp HP mechanics in your backpocket could come in handy. Not to mention, Twilight Sancturary is 1d6 temp HP - so it's possible they enter it and just get the 1 temp HP.
If you Mantle of Inspiration of them, they can zoom out with a fresh 5 temp HP.
Good point. I've been persuaded and I'm gonna go for College of Glamour now :D
I hope you have fun with it! And I hope it works out well with your backstory like you mentioned. Sounds rad af!
Here's something to consider: no one will ever complain about having extra temp HP options!
Hi guys! Im completely new to dnd but I would like to know more about this new world.
Is there anything that i should know or do as a newcomer?

You can buy the individual playable races on D&D Beyond for about $2 each (or about $10 for bundles) instead of the entire book.
Can someone explain death saves to me? I thought I knew how they work but it seems that what I knew was wrong
Player Character hits 0 HP. The next time their turn comes around, they roll a straight d20 (no modifiers). With a 10 or higher they get a success. Less than 10 they get a failure. After 3 successes or 3 failures, the character either is alive with 1 hp (but unconcious) or dead (only magic like resurection can bring them back).
Okay so:
0 HP->2->17->10->20->hit
1 HP but unconscious is from the 2024 UA. That’s not how it works in 5e. You are considered to be at 0 HP still, but “stable”
You would have 0 failures and 0 saves and you have to roll again?
Thanks for the clarification
Whats 2024 ua??
I wouldn't worry about it for now
The updated rules being worked on - see #1026901431132885064
Commonly referred to as “One D&D” it’s a preview of a rules update that will be coming in 2024. Not something to worry about when first learning the game
Could you clarify what you mean in this message? I don't quite understand
If you become stable, or regain any HP, then yes, all of your death saves would reset. If you went unconscious again or were hit after becoming stable, then you would start at 0 successes and 0 failures
The numbers after “0 HP” are rolled death saves
You fall to 0 hp, you roll 2, 17 etc. You become stable and you get hit
Your death save failures dont carry out or whatever?
They do not
Hmm
And what would happen if you got hit at 0 hp for 1 damage - damage resistance
(Thats a minus, not a dash)
You would take no damage.
But would you be unstable/suffer a death fail
And therefore mark off no death saving throw failures
While at 0 hp, you gain a failed saving throw when you take damage. If an attack deals 0 damage, it will not make you fail a death save
An attack that deals 1 damage will round down to 0 if you resist that damage type
Gotcha
I'm new need help
Welcome!
There's some very good links in the pinned messages to help you get started
I’ve never played before neither has my party and am dming
Do i need the players handbook?
to the person who sent me a message, i accidentally pressed delete instead of accept. if u could message me again that would be most appreciated. and if anyone else would like to talk about dnd please feel free to message me
You don't need it right away, the basic rules are all available for free. That being said, the players handbook is a very important book if you want to have more options for players and be able to dive deeper into the game
🤣
I got tired of trying to find a RL group, so I'm about to DM for my 3 kids. I bought the Shipwreck Isle Starter Kit to help us learn. Wish me luck!
For “Conjure Animals” does the summoned use the stats of the creature you chose. Reading on it and the only thing it mentions about stats is “The DM has the creature’s statistics”
Happy thanksgiving everyone
technically, the DM choses which beasts appear. the player just choses the number and CR.
in the spell "animal Friendship" there is a text i didn't understand "If the beast's Intelligence is 4 or higher, the spell fails." i don't get what it mean for the intelligence is 4
animals have statblocks too, so if their intelligence score is 4 or higher, the spell fails
Oh that’s what that means
From what I’ve watched it being used they just let the PC choose the animal
thats a very common way to handle it, to make the spell more fun and less complicated to run, though it can lead to players abusing the statblocks of some particularly powerful beasts
Fair, I just want to summon a bunch of cats mainly
my advice is to talk to your DM before making a character who uses the spells and ask them how the spell works in their game
Oh also if you summon multiple they all have a different turn right?
yes, though they all go on the same initiative
Thanks was just double checking because they use the same initiative
how many spells can a 6th level paladin with a +4 charisma prepare
Charisma mod + Half your Paladin level (rounded down) so they can prepare 7 spells
i have to research about dming and i have to make a scenario 🥲 wish me luck
o7
maybe i should move the session to next week so i can prep more
question i want to make my character weapon a giant brush so what does this count as simple weapon or martial weapon or imprevised weapon?
i would probably either call it an improvised weapon or a reflavored quarterstaff
how do you implement currency into the game? do you have to keep track of your players' money?
I make the players keep track
and implementing is as easy as giving money to PCs and saying that X item costs y gold
I have money as rewards for quests and as loot hoarded by monsters and villains
the players track their money and I trust them
I am new to this community and I am going to post my character sheet on here and if yall would mind looking it over to see if I was either over ambitious or had missed something, would be greatly appreciated. DM me if its an extensive critique. I have not added a background etc. I just want the numbers and others to be right first
Hey, this sheet looks pretty great, just a few small things:
- Your leather armor gives you an AC of 11+Dex, which should make your total AC = 12
- It appears you have not chosen any cantrips yet, you'll want to do that. I would highly (highly) recommend Eldritch Blast
- When you have at least one damaging cantrip be sure to include it in the Weapon Attacks & Cantrips table if it does not do so automatically
- Your Ability Save DC should be 13 (it is calculated by: 8 + Charisma + Proficiency Bonus)
Other than these minor things this looks great, best of luck getting a short backstory written up and choosing which fiend you got your power from
is there anyone willing to play a campaign with me bc im new
Quarterstaff.
Great Sword
glaive
You'll also have to go without the +3 quarterstaff to start with.
ooo yeah, also the gold you have (unless your DM has said otherwise) is a fair bit more than normal. Your background should tell you how much GP you start with
For the Charlatan that's 15gp
I shall begin on all of this, thank you all for your general and specific information
I shall give an update on the fix and chime in 😁

gotcha
Heyo so im fairly new to dnd and ive been playing with other newbies online. and we pretty much do everything online, character sheet etc. but i find it difficult to keep up with just the website i was wondering if any of yall have suggestions for a simple hardcopy format of sheets and inventory cards that i could look at visually and is more interactive?
hey im new to dnd properly, i never had the chance to play it cos none of my mates like it at all, where do i put msg to find a group?
err not sure maybe find a game channel at the very bottom
Check #find-a-game
i found it thank you
Hey I'm new to dnd and I have never played but I wanted to try something new so I want to try it out and see if I like it. Can someone maybe teach me 1 on 1 or in this server (idrc where) and help me learn about all the important stuff. I would be really greatful for someone to help me out here, please and thank you.
It’s not really feasible to personally teach each new player, as we get dozens each day. Your best option is to read the free basic rules, which are linked in the pinned messages of this channel

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
If you are up to give it a try to be the dungeonmaster yourself, then finding other ppl to start a group will be easier
when do you roll for charisma?
When your character attempts to do something and the DM decides it needs a roll.
im what scenarios exactly? I'm tryning to be a dm so er I'd like an example just to be sure
Anything speech related
Usually when you attempt to influence another creature, like presuading them to help you, threaten / intimidate them, lying to them etc.
alright, thanks!
Like as an example, maybe you wanna try and get something from the shop, but want it cheaper
- You attempting to haggle would be a charisma (persuasion) roll
- You intimidating them to sell it to you cheaper would be a charisma (Intimidation) roll
- You lying to them that the owner promised you a lower price would be a charisma (deception) roll
- Or maybe you try and throw a little show to get some money from people by playing music or something, that would be a charisma (performance) roll
anyone knows a good video for newcomers like me about character customisation?
I struggle to expand on my background and it usually seems short and choppy
In a lot of D&D games, you really don't need too much of a character background (really just a "where the character came form and why they are adventuring now"). So I wouldn't get too hung up on it. That said, feel free to check with folks in #character-discussion if you're looking on how to build out that background a bit more.
alright thank you so much
https://youtu.be/p3N3gv1dTr8?si=fcOIIJi4qHqE8FLr good video on backgrounds by the dungeon dudes
Thanks a lot for the information. Yes I imagine the rules might have changed since then. I am more interested on getting aboard online and join some very beginner friendly parties or something to start some adventures. I saw roll20 online so going to do some tutorials and check maps there etc.

You can find lots online
I have 5 pre generated characters but I want my players to make their own characters I also don’t have the players handbook how to solve this dilemma
You can use the Basic Rules that are freely available, though you'd be missing out on plenty of subclass options.
It’s our first time so they don’t know what they’re missing 🤫
Then I'd stick with the Basic Rules linked above.
I have never played DND before and I am making a wizard character with the intent of doing some funny shit. Can I be a alcoholic wizard that uses beer for his magic. Backup option is a mud wizard that uses mud. Is this allowed under the basic rules?
Have you read the free basic rules? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
I have yet to read anything prohibiting such wizard concepts.
That said, make sure to check with your Dungeon Master and the rest of your group to make sure it works for the kind of D&D games you want to play.
Heyyy Im sort of new to dnd, just got into my first campaign and I always feel like I'm doing the wrong thing. My character's name is Aramine and she is a barbarian tiefling. I want to double class later on and add monk. She used to be a mother but her child was taken from her at a young age because her village hated what she was and she devoted her life to train to either find her child or the ones that took her. She is also religious but im still choosing a goddess lol
What do you think you're doing wrong?
I cant ever remember where to find things whenever I have to roll for things like perception and whatnot and sometimes I like to wander and talk to towns people and ask questions but I think its getting annoying and I need to stick to the main campaign more.
Maybe you could try asking things of your party? People like it when others show an interest in them.
As to reading the character sheet, if you're playing pen and paper you can make your own any way you like. Online is a little different, but maybe you could mark up an image for reference?
Gotcha, thank you!
One of the things that separates D&D from a video game is that the world is created by your DM. This means that everything is a mix of prepared content, and improvised content. So, while this does grant you a much greater degree of freedom as a player, it also means that you can't expect the entire game world to be 100% fully developed while playing. Your DM will tried to guide your towards what they have prepared, and what they think is interesting. If you are "wandering off" and talking to random NPCs, that means your DM will have to make something up on the spot to accommodate that. You aren't going to find secret treasure under a rock or behind a waterfall, and you aren't going to find secret side quests by talking to random people, unless your DM makes that up right then and there. I'm not at all saying that you shouldn't do these things at all, but I can certainly understand why someone might get frustrated if you made a constant habit of ignoring what the DM puts in front of you to try to find your own path (if that is what you are doing).
Or, to put it a different way: D&D is a game about co-operative story telling. Your role as a player is to embrace and take part in that story. Don't try to go off and tell a completely different one
Some one have tips for beginners
Hi
read the free basic rules
Ty
- Check over the basic rules
- Learn where things are on your character sheet
- Ask the DM if there's any way you can achieve X instead of straight up going to madcap schemes
- Play with your fellow players: encourage, question, collaborate
- Relax and have fun
Oh, and know your own character's abilities and features.
@slender fjord very much welcome !
So my first dnd session Is tmro with my brother being the DM with 6 players, but how do I get mentally and physically prepared for a session
read the basic rules, make your character, understand your character's features and what they can do
I have my character, I think I just need to mold it in my mind on how they work
have you made a character sheet for them?
Well I told my brother I wanted a barbarian and he added Goliath to make the maximum of my strength 25 with modifiers and my Constitution a 22, I have a basic idea of what the character sheet entails
He rolled for my stats
Well he said he added modifiers to it so idk what that means
Like he said Goliath added a +2
So what I said might be lower
I think it was around 20
Lemme check hold on
Wait nvm I was right
Base is 20 strength with a +5 modifier, idk what he added
And my Constitution is 18 base with a +4
Should I take a picture the sheet itself?
no that makes sense
+5 modifier doesnt mean you have 25 str
the modifier is derived from the base score
you have 20 str, meaning a +5 modifier
i highly recommend reading the basic rules, linked in the pinned messages of this channel
Ok I see now, thx for the help @fleet field
In combat, there are two aspects i recommend your think ahead about:
- where do you want to stand? Where dont you want to stand?
Look at your attack options and understand the range. Ditto if u have spells or abilities
- action economy. Dont let the fancy term scare you. Everyone has an action, bonus action, movement and reaction. When you are low level there wont be that much to track so you should understand what your characters options are for each phase of your turn, as well as any limitations to them.
And all of the above goes back to the recommendation that you study the basic rules and your character sheet
Baldurs gate 3 was the biggest help for me to be able to comprehend what you just said
Most of Bg3 should be set aside as it borrows superficially only
When you say where I want to stand, do you mean off of my character, or like their class and race
ANyone have a second to talk to a newbie? New to this server and also DnD?
in terms of "don't stand on the lava or spikes"
Hello everyone. I'm new to DnD. Icame here after seeing Jaden Animations DnD video.
Ah ok, with the help of my brother and using online sources, I can keep good track of what I can do
Im two years in to dnd im newto online dnd

Hello everyone
Hi!
New to Dnd, any tips on character creation?
Read the first four chapters of the free Basic Rules
Watch yt videos and experiment with dnd beyond a little bit and like the comment above me said read the basic rules it helps a tone.
yo guys i am gonna buy D&D starter set in 10 days
Nice! Which one, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle?
yep Dragons of stormwreck
So it says I can't add damage modifiers to an off hand when diel wielding, I'm a rogue. Can I sneak attack twice in one combat turn with each shortsword?
any tips for newcomer DM and Player?
There’s a free intro here if you want to get a head start!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/itsi/intro-to-stormwreck-isle
No, Sneak Attack say this:
Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll.
You can use it on either of those attacks, though. If the first one misses, you can still try to use it on the second.
The Starter Set has some good tips to get you going, like these: 👇
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
oh thanks 👍
I’d recommend looking through the free Basic Rules as well.
You don’t have to memorize everything, but having some idea if what rules are where will help.
Then if a question comes up, you’ll know where to look.
But don’t worry about pausing the game to look up the answer or ask in #dnd-rules or #dm-discussion.
And don’t worry about making up your own rule just to keep the game going, either.
- Plan a story and adventure 2. Learn to improvise when it goes off the rails 3. REALLY learn how to improvise 4. Have a lot of fun
Where do I go to join a new campaign
#find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
Search the server for player tips, dm tips, and/or replace tips with advice. There's plenty available!
I'll be doing an introductory adventure later on today. New players only!

Hi, everyone! This is just me asking some general advice. I want to play D&D so bad. It’s been a thing for me to try for years, and I’ve seen podcasts, even joined a campaign for a time. However, I have really bad social anxiety. Roleplaying is fun, but I’m nervous about making myself seem silly, and on top of that I’m relatively new so if I make mistakes on an action or a turn I’m afraid I’ll make the DM or the other party members upset
Everyone is in the same boat as you — we're all playing a make-believe game where we roleplay someone we're not in real life. A good group will understand you're new to the game and may not be good at roleplaying. The only thing you should really care about is having fun.
Most players ARE NOT professional voice actors. Remember you DON'T need to do voices, accents, or talk in the first-person when you roleplay.
Agreed - focus on fun. I've been playing for years and I still mess stuff up. No one really cares when I do and they gently remind me when I mess up but it isn't to make fun or mock but rather a "are you sure you did that right?" kind of question.
You could also look at play by post type games where you're just sending text messages of what your character is doing in response to prompts from the DM and other players.
I think transparency is a good move. "I'm new, I'm nervous about making a mistake, but I want to have a good time with you all and not hold the game back." Or whatever script sounds good to you. If folks take you on as a newbie, they should be understanding and help you feel comfortable. Plus, yeah, mistakes are bound to happen. But if the lines of communication are open, you'll hopefully avoid making people upset or, if you do, you can move forward rather than getting stuck there.
Most people aren't even that upset when old-hands mess up
Yeah, it's a game. It's supposed to be fun making up a story with people. No one scores any points by getting it "right," whatever that means.
I've been playing/DMing for 40+ and I mess up all the time (of course as the DM, I'm controlling all NPCs so I mess up sometimes on who's talking)
Thank you! I appreciate it. I’ve been in campaigns where it seems I’ve bothered some people— and it’s made me step back from the game for a while. I do remember having fun when I just let myself go though. I’ll definitely let future party members know that I’m new to the game and don’t want to mess things up. (Also just meeting new people is scary)
You can only get better with experience. If you don't play because you care more about what you perceive as to others think then you won't improve becuase you're holding yourself back.
It's a matter of compatibility: just because some folks acted a certain way doesn't mean all people do. You need to find a group that gels with you (and vice versa).
And no one comes into this world knowing others. Everyone is a new person at one point!
tl;dr Relax and have fun playing others in the silly make-believe roleplaying game we call D&D.
D&D is a social game first and foremost. It is like any relationship (unless they're family), where you all start off as strangers and hopefully you'll get to know them better with each session.
And like all good relationships, trust and vulnerability are (or can be) important, and those can be scary, but they also can result in some amazing moments.
But to be honest, like any relationship a D&D table can have drama, ghosting, toxic behavior, etc.
I’m a senior in high school, so the first campaign I was in was with friends. The DM and a few other party members were people I’ve never met before. I was nervous about asking if I could roll for certain actions because every time I’d ask the DM would be SO passive aggressive. We were on a boat crossing a huge river to get to a place marked on a map a tavern keep gave us, and we were under attack by a giant frog that had emerged from the water. Our party members were generally struggling to defeat it— and out of nowhere I just asked if I could roll to seduce the frog. The DM of course, gave me the weirdest look but said I could. I rolled a 20, so me and the frog got engaged on the spot and that’s where our session ended. After that the DM just ghosted everyone 💀
Since then I’ve felt it was my fault the whole thing fell apart. I had fun but felt like others didn’t because of some actions I took. But, I know that sometimes things won’t work. Some people are toxic, and not all experiences with the game are going to be like that.
Exactly. Being burned like that does suck, but you won't find another opportunity if you don't look for others. Not everyone plays that way.
Hi!! There are 5 new guys here who just purchased the starter set and wanted to role tonight. Any advices? Anyone down to it?
Well don't solciit/advertise games in these channels - see #find-a-game.
Never touched anything d&d related besides from lore-related stuff ! 🙂
But my number one advice is to read trhough things and focus on having fun
Okay, sorry!!!
Because you know it better than me that getting thru all those rules sounds a little bit tricky 🙂 but we’ll manage
D&D is a game of rules. Gotta read 'em.
Of course mate! And thank you for the precious advices

Recommend starting by skimming through the rules, maybe watch some folks play D&D (lots of liveplay streams on YouTube/Twitch), then maybe try your hand at building a character, then go find a group to start playing with.
YOO
There are two issues there:
- inexperienced DM unprepared for player creativity and how handle a nat 20
A nat20 dows not guarantee success on a skill check, unlike in combat where a nat20 is an automatic hit
A nat20 also does not mean you do whatever you wamt. If the DM did not want to end combat through “seducing” the frog, dont allow the roll or set a high DC and be ready to accept rhe result. Or, balance the narrative with then playee choice and give a partial success - instead of the ruling that the frog and you get emgage, rule that the roll results in the frog pausing his attacks temporarily
- table expectations need to be set before play. If “seducing” a frog is not acceptable at the table, talk ahead of time
Well let's start with this: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting
And your class determines your spellcasting ability
that would be bard
So your spell save DC is determined by this equation:
8 + proficiency bonus + charisma modifier
Your spell attack modifier is determined by this equation:
proficiency bonus + charisma modifier
But when do I use these 3
When casting a spell, if the spell requires an attack roll, you would roll a d20 and add your spell attack modifier. If this beats the enemy AC you hit it with the spell.
If the spell requires the enemy target(s) to make a saving throw, they make the saving throw the spell specifies against your spell save DC
and you use your Spellcasting modifier when a spell asks you to make it specifically:
example: you cast Dispel Magic at 3rd level against a spell of 4th level or higher. you then roll a d20+ your spellcasting modifier against the DC (Equal to 10+spell level, in case of this specific spell)
I'm looking at the #looking-for-players channel and alot of listing say dnd beyond, does this refer to the online character maker/app
Yes.
I like D&D beyond but I don’t have access to the race I want to make a character with 😭
Either join a campaign that has it shared or you can buy the playable race for $2
Hollo
Hai!

Hello there I am a new DM/ player and I just joined. Could anyone give me tips on making a new campaign?
As a new DM I would suggest using a prewritten adventure - that way you can focus on the game mechanics instead of writing up a story and non-player characters (NPCs), designing encounters, and everything else. Let the prewritten adventure do that work for you. For other advice, check with the fine folks in #dm-discussion
Thank you
Howdy! I’m Amber, I chose Druid based on my Baldur’s Gate 3 character. I’ve played tabletop once, the experience wasn’t…great. But! That was my co-players and not the game itself. I look forward to diving deeper into the game and finding my people 💛
Welcome!
Is there a way to make inventions without going into artificer?
a PC's ability to invent things is more limited by the DM than any class. Even Artificers can't invent new stuff outside of the rules for them without DM approval
Well let me be more specific. We are doing a one piece dnd and my character is the shipwright. I was wanting to be able to build on the ship and create extensions and accessories without dabbling levels into artificer
well you gotta ask your DM about that stuff. there are no official rules for what you want to do
and levels in artificer wouldnt change that btw
Okay, I appreciate you answering
Normally if you ask to do stuff like that and such it’s best to do it in down time. However. Making a case for what you wanna make also helps 🙂
Alright. Thank you
welcome to this cozy little plane of ours
Thank you!
Hi! I don't really know how to play dnd, but i was hoping someone could teach me (if that is possible)
Well unfortunately we don't have time/bandwidth to teach folks one on one. What we do recommend is checking out the info and resources in the pinned messages here in the channel. Maybe check out some D&D liveplay sterams on YouTube/Twitch, then trying your hand at creating a character sheet, then find a group and start playing.
ok 👍
Honestly watching YouTube videos may be your best bet but the basics of it is you create a personalized character and role play it dnd is best summed up as make believe with rules so whatever you can imagine you can probably find a way to make it happen.
ok
You can do anything from fight dragons to have a war in space it just depends on the campaign
Im really struggling with combat— I've tried reading the books but it's really just passing me. Does anyone have any good campaigns I could watch to maybe learn more about campaign? Or good videos? :)
Handbooker Helper has some good videos for rules explanations:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
Are there any specific combat questions you had?
Im exceptionally struggling with the magic aspect— Like, I feel like I understand it but I also have trouble remembering it. Its kind of stupid— Just lost. :')
Thank you for the video though
has anyone tried a system where your players can build affection/trust with npcs
That's less of a newcomer question and more #dm-discussion or possibly #homebrew.
oh ok
hello I am just starting out what do I need to buy or should I buy to continue and this stuff is [retty confusing can I get an easy explanation somewhere
hi! my friends and i wanna start playing dnd but we're all extremely new. can someone recommend a handbook or something similar thats easy to understand and memorize not only for me to dm but for my friends to play as well? and i would really appreciate some ideas on how to play over discord as well. ty <3
You don’t need to buy anything to start out. The basic rules are available for free online
The basic rules are available free online. They’re linked in the pinned messages of this channel. You shouldn’t need to memorise everything, just remember the basics, and try and know where to look to find everything else
As for playing over discord, have a look at this bot post:
I wasn’t meaning that for you but if you find it useful as well that’s good
tyyy!
is anyone maybe able to help me figure out spells and stuff? i have a thing coming up, and i kinda told one of my friends id set up their spells, but im really confused on it
What part of it are you confused abt?
im mostly confused on how many spells their gonna get
What class are they?
they are a cleric
They can prepare a number of levelled spells equal to their level + their wisdom modifier
They also know 2 cantrips
ok does different levels get a different amount of spells?
As I said, they can prepare a number equal to their level + their wisdom mod
So as their level increases, they can prepare more
As shown in their class table, they also get a couple more cantrips as they level up
ok
what is a class table?
and what is the wisdom modifier? os that your total score or ability modifier? or am i way off
1.. Class table for cleric: Right under Quick Build, and summarizes the features, and spell progression per level: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#QuickBuild3
2. The ability modifier specifically for Wisdom. Probably is +3 or maybe +4 for a starting cleric. As opposed to the score, which is the number between 3-20 (probably is 15-18 for you)
This is all so confusing, how do I even start to play with people? I'm quite new and this all seems way too complex
Depends if you want to play in person or online.
I want to play online
Im not sure, but I've wanted to find anything like being in call with people in discord, though I'm aware that theres like alot more to it
Thats why im kind of clueless on what to do
Theres alot of things that I dont even know at all so yeah im quite lost
Well, that's what you have ask yourself if you want to play in person or online. We can't answer that for you.
?tag new online
Good lord its still so complicated
You're trying to find people to play with. It's no different than dating.
god i am so overwhelmed
Check out #find-a-game if you want to find online games.
Have you read the basic rules?
On the simplest level, you find 3-5 (optimally, other numbers can work) other people who want to play and know how to, and organise a time to meet, whether that be in person or online, to play
is my MTG account the same as my wizards of the coast account cuz it says that it is but when i try to sign in it says that its not a wizards of the coast account ALTHOUGH IT IS
We could not find a D&D Beyond account associated with that account. Your account may be associated with another login provider, or you do not have an account yet and need to Create an Account.
do i need to make a dnd beyond account and link it to my mtg/wizards account?
Like, MTG Arena or some such? Might be specific to the actual game publisher.
yes
cuz i have a wizards account
as its my mtg account
So . How do i start XD
Like most games, you read the rules (free basic rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules), maybe watch some folks playing the game (check YouTube/Twitch for D&D liveplay streams), try your hand at building a character (refer back to the rules), then go and find a group to play D&D with.

Hello, I'm interested in finding a DND group. I'm familiar with the basics cause I played a one-shot at a convention years ago.
You'll be wanting #find-a-game
Thanks
Hi, Im doing DnD with some friends, I started abit ago and am a rogue drow elf but I feel like I'm not really doing that much. Is there anyone that could help me improve my character? The books we're using are player handbook and xantars guide to everything and we're doing the icewind dale campaign
Like for example, I need items to use my cantrip dancing lights but I have no idea how to get those items
You might want to try it from this page instead, to create an account:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/create-account
THAAAAAAAAAAAANK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
If you have a spell focus or component pouch, you shouldn't need to actually find materials for spells.
I don't know wether I have those
You can buy a component pouch for 25gp.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/equipment/component-pouch
I’m betting your character can’t use a spellcasting focus.
ooh thank you for the help :)
Ok one other question; I wanna become an arcane trickster, is there like a level 1 spell thats really good?
Shield is always a recommended option, which will be your one non-illusion/enchantment spell if you pick it. #character-discussion might be able to help more for picking out spells for a build.
Find Familiar.
Oh that spell looks really fun, thank you :)
Find familair is very fun RP and fun mix with arcane trickster. Get a little sneak pet
Is there a limit on how many I can have?
Familairs or spells?
familiars
Because find familiar is only 1 at a time
Just the one familiar.
ok but he stays with me until he dies?
Yep!
But I think you can recast it to change what form it is.
And you can resummon him if he poofs.
Oh thats really cool
so itll be the same guy, but diffrent animal?
Yep, because familairs are actually little spirits (fey, celestial or fiendish) that ust take the form of animals
ooh that sounds really fun
Im glad I asked, I was gonna do something boring like acid splash or thunderclap
I did not even see this thing, thank you guys
It can get expensive 10gp of materials a summon
Yea but right now I have 180gp so I dont think itll be the biggest issue
See, shame you're not a warlock, then you could go Pact of the Chain and summon a quasit, the best familiar there is. Four forms it can change into on the fly, and invisibility!
Ooh that sounds cool too!
I will keep that in mind if my character dies lmao
also my party did get a bag of tricks, is that not also a bit like find familiar?
Word of warning: a familiar that takes an active role in combat is then generally considered a valid target, and they break easily.
Ok good to know
Im guessing if I stealth it doesnt have my +5 in stealth?
It has the stats of the form it takes.
Ooh ok Ill research that abit
Ok but a question; could I have like a cat that overheard something, and then turn it into a raven to tell me what it heard
or is that too out of nowhere
You'd need to recast the spell to change it's form RAW (rules as written)
Also you don't need it to be a raven to communicate with it: "While your familiar is within 100 feet of you, you can communicate with it telepathically."
Oh thats cool
Thanks so much!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/find-familiar for the full text- worth looking through to see all the fun things you can do with it, and what forms your familair can take (DMs might allow for different forms, but you'll need to ask them)
Ah ok thanks!
Hello! I was wondering if y’all had any tips for a beginner? I plan on getting the player handbook, rules, and building a character journal but anything helps!
You can type ?new to have it re-post.
Thank you!!
Im planning on creating a sort of study & notes thing to help me understand D&D better, these are the main sections I decided upon which can be broken up into more simple things:
What is D&D
Gameplay
Combat
Magic
Character Creating
World
Campaign Creating
(ex. Character creating would involve race, class, background and character sheet function, combat would involve monsters, certain skill checks, etc), are there any more main sections I should create or does this about cover everything? Im thinking of changing gameplay to mechanics.
Roleplay?
Hello everyone!!
I am brand new to DND but still really want to play can someone help me
What do you want help with
Like tell me the rules basically
And possibly tell me how to find a group to play with
Basic rules are free and in the pins

Thank you guys!
Hey all, we are a group of new D&D adventurers. Last night we completed A Most Potent Brew and the players really enjoyed it, so we are going to be doing a regular pre-made campaign. Unfortunately, due to the distance we live apart, we will be running the campaign over Discord. We are still learning so are looking for advice on which campaigns (a) will be best for newer players (and DM) and (b) which will be easiest to run over discord with materials that can be used already. Also, which programs will be best to use to best simulate tabletop. Thanks in advance 😁. We are thinking Dragons of Icespire Peak. The DM has completed LMOP as well.
Hello :D where do I start playing???
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
hi and welcome. to start playing you need to gather a group to play with. this can be done in various places like /lfg on reddit, roll20.net or similar websites, as well as on discord servers like this one. check out #find-a-game .
if you want IRL play, check out your local game stores
Woaaah, thank you!
If you were to break up combat as a whole into sections— Mechanics, monsters, etc, what would they be?
Hi! I’m semi-new to D&D and I want to try dming. Where should I start?
This is going to sound really stupid, but can a owlin have the hexblood lineage? I know there’s a bird type race (forgot name) that can have things like Dhampir but I’m not sure on Owlin
Would Lost Mine of Phandelver be a good adventure for my first DM session?
Not stupid at all. I don't see anything on the online race that would prevent them being a hexblade? Another bird race is aarakocra
I hate to keep asking for suggestions but are there any one shots you recommend? I want to try that before running a campaign
Oh thanks, also yeah Aarakocra is what I was thinking of, I just didn’t know how to spell it
Thank you!! 🙏
This is a great step-by-step guide and also includes a newbie-friendly adventure to run: https://howtogm.guide/
This site looks really thorough and helpful. Thank you!! 🙏
Any of the starter sets (Lost Mine of Phandelver, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, and even the Stranger Things set) are all designed for new players and DMs, though I do think the more recent materials do a better job of orienting new folks; LMoP, as great as it is, feels like it assumes at least a little familiarity with TTRPGs generally, whereas DoSI does better with fundamentals. Icespire Peak is very "pick a quest and pursue" rather than a cohesive story, so I could see it working really well or really poorly, depending on the group.
To LMoP's credit, since it was the first thing published for fifth edition D&D, it has so much material in the form of advice, narrative tweaks and extensions, maps, and more. If the DM already played it, then no harm in running it.
As for virtual tabletops, Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo are free options. They both have something of a learning curve. If you want to plunk down money, there are some very fancy VTTs out there.
Can someone tell me how to get a group of I have no one I know to play with
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
I went to the find a game but I am kinda confused
What are you confused about
I am fairly new to discord communities so I guess I just expected a chat that was like "who needs a group" or something -_-; sorry!
Where’s a good place to make a character? Most sites I see have barely any races, so they aren’t much help
If youre talking about dndbeyond youll have to buy the books online to unlock other races, there are alternatives though
If you're using D&D Beyond you can either buy individual playable races for $2 each or when you join a campaign the DM may share their digital books with you.
#find-a-game is a bot channel. You input bot commands, and it will provide you with a form to fill out, which will create a post for you in #750812887697588356 or whichever channel you use the command for. If you scroll to the top of #find-a-game and read the posts there, it will explain everything. The messages there are instructions
thank you! i kinda figured it out by clicking things at random! I hope I find a fun group!!
Alternatively, you can check out #looking-for-players and reply directly to any games that interest you.
The basic rules provide some content for free. Expanded content is found in books or individually if you want to use it in dnD beyond
Anyone got a really good quickstart guide for spellcasting in combat? The spell slots confuse me, and stupidly I'm heading into a new campaign playing a cleric in a couple of hours and have no clue (and no time to read the players handbook now). <shakes fist in air and curses student syndrome!>
This will be my first game in about 30 years, seemed like a good idea at the time now I'm not sure I'm ready
As a cleric you know all cleric spells (that's level appropriate, so a level 1 cleric only knows 1st-level cleric spells) and can prepare as many spells equal to your cleric level plus Wisdom modifer.
Think of spell slots like charges. So a level 1 cleric has two 1st-level spell slots. That means you can cast two 1st-level spells from your prepared spell list.
Read this ^^^^
Some spells can be upcast, using a higher level than needed, in order to achieve additional effect.
Cleric spellcasting is relatively more straightforward because it has a couple spells that are super good in almost any fight, which is a positive or detriment depending on your perspective
On YouTube, Treantmonk has cleric guides to get you started
but you do need to get ahold of the spellcasting basics
sup
If you’d like to advertise your campaign, please do so in the proper channel, by using #find-a-game to make a post in #looking-for-players or #750812887697588356
What do we do here?
Idfk
Ima just wait till some mod tells me
I have never played >:0
Well then you should read
I read teh rules that its
You better get to some YouTube tonight then

Hello everyone! I'm new to DND but have always been fascinated and loved watching it, I'm glag to finally be able to try it out!
I have watched it I know what to do
Same
imma do what this says
Oh
If folks are ready to find a group to play with, see #find-a-game and read it carefully as it will explain how to use our LFG channels.
Lfg
y'all 2 better wait for me while i do that shit above
What’s lfg?
I mainly watched a YouTube called Critcrab, which started my love for it
Looking For Group/Game
I’m gonna read all that once I get home
I understand now
Thanks
wait for me
Fine
This may be an odd question, but is someone able to sit a game?
Like not play yet, but just watch/listen? Just to see the scope of things? (Idk if this makes sense)
Well join a group together when yall understand
I have a rogue character you can use
Probably
Oh btw
@atomic shard @flint junco recommend yall have d&d beyond
I do
K
Thats the book right?
No app
Ah okay!
It has all information you may need
Instead of sitting on a real game (which is kind of weird as a D&D game is usually played among a social group and having strangers sit in and watch is kind of weird), try watching D&D liveplay streams on YouTube/Twitch.
Not saying there aren't groups willing to do that... but it's not something I've seen.
I have no wonder what that is but fighter looking kinda good baased on how it words it
idk yet fighter or rogue
Download d&d beyond read up and make an oc
I MENA DND CHARACTER
I'm doing this
Yeah start with the free basic rules - it has everything eneded to start playing D&D.
Ah ok
For a new DM, what is a good way to introduce the players to the story and get them started on roleplaying?
Hello I’m new here
Hey you, you’re finally awake. You were trying to cross the border right?
Assuming we’re not roleplaying as the dragon born what are some good tips? 😅
There’s a reason the tavern is a trope
How about some intro music to get them in the mood
when in doubt, trope it out
When in doubt, pinky out

I’m new as well I know the basics but I’d like to play a game when dose one happen?
Didn’t really help or I’m blind one of the two
Read the instructions in #find-a-game - also peruse the posts in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community - and use the threads attached to the posts to respond (or direct message the poster).
"You have chosen, or been chosen, to..."
Thank you @wild onyx
hellooo i've never played before and im hoping to get into dnd
Welcome!
im hoping to learn as i play but is there any bare minimum reading i should do before i start

i didnt roll below a 10 though i think this is rigged /j
Henlo fellow wizards, what is your favorite wizard subclass and why?
Mine is Scribes, because when I want to play a bookish wizard, I want them to be the most bookish of all the wizards.
Bladesinging is fun too, for a spellsword build
I like Conjuration for the limitless roleplay and problem solving potential of the Minor Conjuration feature
Standing around waiting for someone to finish what they're doing? Instant camping chair.
Scribes is the only one I’ve actually played, but I had a blast!
Im thinking about transmutation, mostly cause if the alchemy reasons
Hey guys does anyone know if to become a full Vampire (not a spawn) you have to be a spawn first or can a regular human just cannibalize a master vampire
The Monster Manual says this:
Most of a vampire’s victims become vampire spawn — ravenous creatures with a vampire’s hunger for blood, but under the control of the vampire that created them. If a true vampire allows a spawn to draw blood from its own body, the spawn transforms into a true vampire no longer under its master’s control. Few vampires are willing to relinquish their control in this manner. Vampire spawn become free-willed when their creator dies.
Hey everyone anyone know the best choice for making a necromancer, any tips would be great
okay, so normally its spawn first then true vampire.
I am curious what would happen if a normal person ate someone like strahd or cazador
if they were strong enough
Normally it’s a controlled spawn, then a free-willed spawn.
thanks
They only become a true vampire if their master lets them drink its own blood.
And I don’t think drinking that blood works at all if you’re not a spawn first.
Or at least, it doesn’t specify what happens in that scenario.
Wizards have a subclass called School of Necromancy.
Ahh thank you for that just started to play the game always wanted to be a necromancer
Uhm hello! I'm new ahha!

Hi! I'm super new to D&D, was wondering if there's any free content besides the Basic Rules
DMsGuild and DriveThruRPG may have Pay What You Want materials (e.g. can pay $0 and still access it).
Also DnDbyond has some free adventures as well.
What are some of DnDBeyond's free adventures?
There’s also:
Hello I am new here and also a beginner to dnd
Welcome!
That’s what the channel’s here for!
What are the average stats of a thri kreen
(I was gonna plan to play as an outcast thri kreen because of different genetic in birth)
I can show you the art I have made if that's alright
The thri kreen are a purchase able race on dnd beyond, that cant be copied here
When you say “average stats”, which stats did you mean, exactly?
Constitution and strength
Races do not have fixed stats
That’s not really how races work in the game, yeah.
Ah I see
Your characters ability scores are determined by various methods at the beginning of character building
Thri-kreen lets you add +2 to one ability score of your choice and +1 to another.
Or +1 to three different scores.
Please refer to the free basic rules for the creation process
Ooh
Alright :D
But which specific scores you should prioritize is generally determined by your class, not your race.
thanks for the advice
A thri-kreen barbarian and a thri-kreen wizard would have very different priorities there.
Can I show you the consept art I've made for my character?
Please do! You can share it in #dnd-arts-and-crafts if it’s something you drew yourself.
Or #dnd-heroforge-etc if you used a character-builder app like Hero Forge.
I see
I'm not sure sure if this is a good place to ask this, But i've started playing my first campaign I've gone with a cliché character and class with what i feel is a basic back story. Dwarf Barb that is obsessed with creating the greatest weapon of all time. to the point where he's been exiled for going a little overboard with his creations.
With that tid bit out of the way, basically group completed their first mission and my character ended up with a mithril pickaxe with i think +1 to damage and +1 to casting (could be wrong need to check with DM i know it has two +1 stats), along with a curse effect that it destroys anything it kills.
Now i feel my character would love to obtain an item like this, but not to use but to try to destroy it and make something better. The reason I'm here is I'm trying not to be a chaotic stupid with my character's actions; But i feel like this is something my character would want to do. my question is, is an action like this generally frowned upon, is a weapon like this considered soo amazing it would be flat out dumb to destroy it? I just dont understand how powerful this weapon is since i dont know what is considered a good tier weapon so to speak.
okay well i appreciate the anwser to both questions then 🙂 thanks!
Not really, this is about reacting to an item not making an item
trying to get frozen sick maps to work but cant seem to pull it up
Can’t pull it up… where?
how do you open a dnd session, like, introduce the setting to your players?
DM: "You meet up in a tavern/inn."
Also check out #dm-discussion
The tried and true
The most popular/overused opener, but a good one for sure
Overused for a reason
Another good one I’ve been using in one shots recently is you’ve been kidnapped or falsely arrested together
Ooh, I like that one
DM: "You're hired as guards for a caravan."
I’ve seen that one some I don’t like it
"You have chosen, or been chosen, to..."
I use usually use your hired to rescue someone In a one-shot
Hello guys
HL2 is full of good lines from the intro alone
Im completely new to the whole D&D thing
I know the complete basics like different races (human, dwarf, and other stuff) and like there being a dungeon master who makes up the story
Apart from that I got no knowledge

Take a walk through the basic rules to begin grasping the mechanics of the game, but you've basically got the fundamentals down I believe
I also know like you need a character sheet
Give them backstory and stiff and for most desicions role a dice
Nice nice
One last question
Is there any way to play it online? I heavily doubt there are any groups in my area and even if they were, where j live everyone speaks German
I like that picture
Ye olden internet
I myself have my group on a Discord Server, using Discord Voice Chat, DNDBeyond character sheets, and Owlbear Rodeo for the virtual tabletop
me and my group use discord and tabletop simulator on steam
Oh sick
i love tabletop sim
Hello I am new.
Howdy.
👋
Hi
Helloo folks 👋
Hello
Greetings to everyone.
hi hi
So, what is y’all’s favourite class?
would be bard
That’s a fun choice.
thanks 👍
👌
you?
It would be Monk.
But I am very fond of Wizard and Druid.
you seem someone who already played one or two games, may I have a question?
Sort of, but what is your inquiry?
my inquirity is that of your knowladge on the game, or, more so, the way you recruit potencial comrades. I struggle with finding any in my country, we dont really have a DnD community here.
I think online is the best possible way of finding friends that play it. As impractical as it sounds, online gameplay has its benefits. Such as finding people who do play it, along with a being able to play altogether. The only downside is potential Timezone trouble.
Step 1: check over the Basic Rules. They're free!
Step 2: put a starting character together. I recommend using the standard array method.
Step 3: #find-a-game
heya i'm scruffy i'm interested in dnd but i have autism and struggle to play the game if its not visual, i enjoyed bg3 but the spells were visual icons, i cant remember names easily for things but am able to remember stuff via icons and images, do you think i might be able to still play dnd?
sure! its for anyone!
thanks!
thank you, already working on it.
Yes! You will find many video guides to start with. Once you have a character sorted, make your own cheat sheet for reference. I suggest game-icons.net for your icon needs.
YouTube is a great source of knowledge. Despite it’s reputation.
it all seems so hard to understand, do you reccomend any videos that might be good?
give me a sec
Yeah. I wish I could find the exact rules of Dice Modifiers. Like how much damage works when rolling dice, and all of that. Even though I have the DM role, I am a beginner. But I really wish to learn how to exact DM, as I have the basic premise of describing things but I want to learn how to properly know things like how to exactly each dice works, how speed works in Ft, the bludgeon effect’s function and stuff like that. Just basically know the in’s and out’s of DMing.
Also how to convey time with like ritual spells.
so good one is videos from WASD20 and Sherlock Hulmes has a good video about DnD too
And how to invoke actions with the Monsters that the party encounters.
found a how to play dnd video from WASD20 i'll Give it a watch now 🙂
he has much more for example the ones on character sheet, those ones are good too
and ofcourse good luck fellow trubadier 🤗
"know things like how to exactly each dice works, how speed works in Ft, the bludgeon effect’s function"
Well, each dice is simply random number generation. It's specifically what calls for it that's the specific thing. For example, a d100 can have very different connotations between a Cleric's Divine Intervention, the stress of a Wish spell, or the Wild Magic Surge of a Wild Magic Sorcerer.
Speed is simply, on any given creature's turn, that creature gets movement equal to their speed. They can move that far on their turn. Dash adds an amount of movement equal to speed (not doubling - dashing twice is not four times your base movement, only three)
Bludgeoning damage has no innate effect, as do no other damage types. Instead, rules will interact with the damage types.
And this simply works the same as players - they have an action on their turn, and can as such take an action. Most monsters have a Multiattack action, and usually it's their bread and butter so to speak.
Alright.
What about how to calculate damage on certain creatures with a high Armor Class?
Armour class indicates how difficult it is to land a damaging hit on a target. It has no direct effect on the amount of damage done.
You have a to hit roll and a damage roll. The 'to hit' roll is compared against AC. If it's equal to or higher, you hit and roll damage. If lower, you miss.
Damage might be affect by damage resistances (halves a type of damage) or immunities (immune to a type of damage), but is not affect by AC.
Have you looked at the Handbook Helper videos, @chilly mesa ?

Hi discord peeps 🫡. I've been interested in d&d for a while now but never mustered up the courage to give this game a go since it looks quite complicated but I'm willing to learn and give it a try now. If there's any groups that are willing to take a newcomer as myself to a session please hit me up 😎👍🏿

i watched the video about abilities and modifers but when using the dnd beyond app, it said my strength was 90 when i thought i put in a 12, so i'm confused
It sounds like you've put a value in a field you shouldn't have
yeah..its confusing..i dont really get ittt
Go to #ddb-support and post a link to your character sheet
@fluid ember
Peril in Pinebrook is a free to use oneshot (an adventure that should only take one or two sessions to complete) that acts very much like a beginners tutorial to D&D, including describing how rules work as you play.
You can get the Basic Rules PDF or browse through them on Dndbeyond's web page here.
As Mr. Smith said, if you want something a bit more the starter set or essential set is a good bet. Both come with a beginner adventure to run (longer than the above free oneshot), and with a set of basic rules (Starter set uses the free basic rules, essentials uses basic rules+ ).
Very nice.
Thanks man
Elgate's pronouns are she/her (you can see pronouns by clicking their profile)
heya i got an 11 for dex and charisma, which means 0+ modifiers, i got that from doing the critical roll handbooker helper trick when randomly selecting ability scores, is the 0+ i'm not sure if i should worry
i am a bard as well
but maybe thinking of not being a bard since i am not very Charismatic
Remember for rolling you should only roll in front of a DM, but you can change the stats around.
its for me making a charecter sheet for the first time
For example if you roll 10, 12, 16, 11, 12, 15 You don't have to put those in in order. You could choose to put the 16 and 15 in dex and cha, and put the 10 and 11 elsewhere. There's also your racial modifier +1 / +2 you can put in. For many races these are set (Like Dragonborn get +2 strength, +1 Charisma) but many DMs use a new rule now that let's you put them in any stat.
For making a practice character sheet, you can use any stat generation rules you like. Array and point buy as usually the safest methods.
You'd have to reroll your stats for that character in front of a DM if you join a game, as your DM will likely not accept pre-rolled stats (as you could declare you rolled anything.)
Standard array. The standard, for arrays.
so when joining a new game i have to roll for my stats for my charecter? does that mean everyone makes a charecter while starting the game?
The DM decides how stats are generated. They might not allow rolling at all.
I don't.
You can make them ahead of time with standard array or point buy, since the majority of DMs are ok with that
If you wanna roll, most will ask you to do so in person
ah i see but i dont own any dice in person
The DM will probably have some spare ones
i was planning to join an online one, i dont feel comfortable around people irl
Worst case scenario, use an online roller.
Cheap dice sets around here go for 6€
And it generally is a good idea to make a new character specifically for a game, so you can make them with any house rules (like no rolling for stats), or make them fit for that game world and story. But having an idea before hand isn't a bad idea and DMs will likely allow most 'by the rules' characters.
i was planning to find some campaigns on roll20 but i do feel abit intimidated with these rules, they seem abit confusing, i'll feel embaressed if i go in and just assume everyone makes the chatecter on the spot and it turns out you have to speak to the dm before to ask about it.
If you look for new player friendly games, they'll likely be more than happy to explain as you play, and other players will also be new and asking questions or not sure how things work. Everyone starts somewhere.
Making a practice character to get a grasp of how to make a character is perfectly fine and often a suggested idea for new players. It's just that you might need to make a new character for a game, or change the character you made before hand to fit.
i see, so if i need to change i just gotta talk to the dm about it?
For any game you'll need to chat with your DM about your character, but this is just a normal part of it. The DM needs to know about your character so that they can adjust the story, or make sure everything is in order, or so on. It's a cooperative game, so it's really a good idea before any new game to have what is called a 'session 0'.
This is where you all talk to each other to make sure you know what sort of game it's going to be (silly? combat-orientated? serious role play? Dark?) and any rules in place (including if there are any topics you or anyone else want to avoid because they make you uncomfortable), and to make sure all your characters fit the story and so on.
Okay i'm a newbie and i wanted to start playing some online D&D, i clicked some links and ended up here. this is also my first time on discord , so im a very newbie. I've played D&D once in my life but I'd love to play some more. Any idea where I can find some beginner friendly games to get started?
Welcome! There's literally a bunch of places you can start. If I'm not mistaken, there's a channel on this Discord server for this purpose. You might also find people to play with in places like Forums, specifically for the platforms that support D&D like D&D Beyond or Roll 20. Some people also had success on local Facebook groups, or connecting with people in local game stores.
I think it’s weird that sometimes when it comes to DnD beyond, you can’t use certain contents.
Cause I really wish I could use a Tressym Familiar but it’s in the Storm King’s Thunder Book.
That’s cause you have to buy the content to use it
Content.
Not at all weird. Production of the content takes time and effort, and labour should be compensated. If you own a work that's not part of your Beyond account, you can use the homebrew option to add it to your collection.
And you can purchase individual things for ~$2
Really now?
I should try to homebrew sometime. Cause I have some cool ideas.

Yep, scroll down and the options are there

Is there a good wizzard cantrip I should know about?
Most are. Some tips are to pick maybe one attack roll cantrip (like firebolt), one save vs damage cantrip (like chill touch), and some 'utility' cantrips (like mage hand, or message). This is so you have one generic attack cantrip, one cantrip that can target a save if their AC is too high to hit, and some fun cantrips for outside of combat.
Otherwise it's picking spells that sound fun, fit the theme of your wizard/PC and work with your build.
yes, Ill get the mage hand of arcane trickster
Sup me again I read the online rules and they where good but how do I balance monsters because some times I want to go with a theme for a dungeon but can’t because the pre made one are a bit too powerful to win against .and thx for the help 🙂
#dm-discussion can also help out with this, but in general pre-written adventures are designed with 4 players in mind.
If you have 3 or 5, it might be a little bit harder or easier, but you can add or remove one or two enemies in a combat to balance it out a bit.
If you have a very small group, like 2 or even 1 player, you might want to consider giving them sidekicks. Sidekick rules are in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, but the playtest rules for sidekicks are similar and can work in a pinch.
As a DM you can RP the sidekicks outside of combat if needed, but allow the players to share control of the sidekicks in combat so they feel like they have more turns to engage with combat.
Ohh thx 😊
Even with a 4 party group combats might need adjusting. Some players are more experienced with the game or more tactically minded, while others are less so. One skill as a DM is learning your own groups comfortable level of play and adjusting fights to be more or less challenging for them.
Got it thanks you helped a lot .me and my friends have tried playing and it was fun but that was an problem for us sometimes and made it hard to enjoy.

Hello everyone, everything good? I'm playing a campaign like a homebrew race where I'm half unicorn and playing wizard. I have the idea of creating a biome inspired by the game Terraria o "The Hallow is a Hardmode surface biome. It is characterized by pastel-colored fairytale graphics, with colorful cyan-colored grass, multicolored trees, and a large rainbow in the background, as well as similarly whimsical-looking (though dangerous) enemies. The Underground Hallow biome can be found directly beneath a naturally-generated Hallow biome.", with the idea of making a biome that corrupts/consumes another biome, I would like to ask for help More experienced players if there is a mechanic like this in the game, thank you!
I was thinking of Toll the Dead, and like message but what is a save vs damage
Portals to the feywild might affect the material plane (our world), but not many biomes really corrupt/consume others in D&D. #dnd-lore might actually have more idea (Sorry, I know I just suggested here for questions on learning how to play)
Toll the dead is save spell:
The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or take 1d8 necrotic damage.
Compare to a spell that is an attack roll, like firebolt:
Make a **ranged spell attack **against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 fire damage.
Hmm so one is good if the enemy has disadvantage and one is good if you have advantage?
The reason why a 'save vs damage' and a 'attack roll' cantrip are usually suggested is so that you always have a damaging cantrip to use.
Spell attacks target the creatures AC (armour class), so great if the creature has lowish AC or you have advantage on an attack.
Less great if they have high AC or if you have disadvantage on an attack.
Then you can use your Save vs damage spell, that instead targets their save (Wisdom in this case) and hope their saves are worse than their AC. (Or yes, also useful if they have disadvantage on the save for any reason)
Ooh okay thats good to know. But we use combat rating instead of telling AC, so itll be more of a gamble then right?
Think of it like this, perhaps:
A knight in heavy armor is really hard to hit with an arrow, but all that armor slows him down when he's trying to jump out of the way of a fire ball.
Thank you very much! The idea of creating a biome like this is due to my character having a problem with the leader of hell and thus creating something that hinders him in different ways.
hmm yes thanks
Not quite sure what that means.
Normally DMs don't actually tell you the AC of an enemy, but you tend to figure it out pretty quickly if an 18 hits but a 17 misses.
true
Our DM does hide our outcomes though :/
But still thank you I get what you mean
I get the mechanics alot better now
Your DM uses the monster's Challenge Rating to determine how much XP you get for beating them, and as a rough estimate of how difficult the encounter will be, but as a player you aren't supposed to know the CR of the monsters you are fighting
Am new to dming and my party is new they all have 18 constitution is this ok?
did they roll their stats?
Did you watch them roll their stats, too?
The shortest answer to your question is: A team with all high scores is perfectly fine. You as the DM have the ability to fine tune the adventure as you see fit! Make it easier, make it harder, it's up to you. The only time very high stats tend to be a problem is when one of your players has way higher stats than the rest of them, or vice versa.
ALL is a bit fishy
Your players having a little extra HP isn't going to break the game at all, if that is what you are worried about
Oh ok
And if it does, you can just make the monsters hit a little harder
It's still within the bounds of the game. Starting off with 18 is possible, and only just a bit higher than what point buy or standard array would allow (17). It won't break anything.
I'm incredibly new to this, for years I've wanted to give dnd a try, but never had the opportunity to, I figured this discord may be my last resort for trying to play the game. I've tried reading over some of the guides but it's very difficult for me, so I probably need more personal instructions on how to go about this.
So the bard roled 10 then add 8 for his bonus 18
Ah, that's not how normal rolling works, so might be a bit skewed by that.
It was hard for me but just started it
It solves it self really
Where did "8 for his bonus" come from?
Usually it's 3d6 or more commonly 4d6 drop the lowest. d10 +8 is a method I've heard of before (as it ensures you always have a 9-18, unlike 4d6 which can still lead to 3-18) on a 4d6 drop lowest an 18 is about 1.68%. On a d10+8 the chance is 10%
Class features
You cannot apply class features to stat generation. I'm very confused by this.
?
Bards do not have a class feature that give them +8 to constitution. Are you referring to their Hit Die?
Are you saying for their stats the Bard rolled 1d10 and applied bardic inspiration?
Hey, I haven't played since I was in highschool and my kids want to start playing. My brain is mush 🤣 and can't remember how to actually play
@robust vessel what method did you use to have the players roll for their stats?
so what's the next step? as I thought joining the discord was "Starting" it
If you want help learning the rules, the "Handbooker Helper" series on youtube, made by the cast of Critical Role, is extremely informative and easy to understand.
If you want help learning how to be a DM, the "Running the Game" series on youtube, by Matthew Colville is an excellent starting guide and source of inspiration.
You don't have to watch the entirety of both series. You can pick and choose episodes based on what you are interested in or confused about
I bought the 'Dragons of Stormwreck isle' starter set
This discord server is a place to discuss the game and learn more about it. We don't actually play the game in this server. Though, you can use our #find-a-game channel to help you find one
i dont really wanna run a game, but i dont really know anyone in my personal life able to, so i might end up having to, a video series might be better though as i struggle with reading/taking words i read and making sure i understand them, i always struggle with that
i want to specifically look at the wizard, but i can't find it in the playlist you linked
Yeah how strange. It looks like they missed that one or something. At the end of the playlist, it says there is 1 unlisted video. Maybe that one got taken down for some reason?
It's private on any link I can find for it, so yeah, for some reason that one was taken down.
Question, do Kobolds have a resistance to fire at all?
ok going back through, i somehow have an understanding on very basic things like rolling, modifiers, etc, but i am still uncertain on where to "start"
A nice place to start is by filling out a Character Sheet! The basic rules have a set by step guide available for you
'Fraid not.
Darn, I lost an argument. No biggie.
I was certain Kobolds had a resistance to fire
Anyhow, another Kobold related question. Would they be able to use a flintlock efficiently?
These aren't really basic/beginner questions and are much more 'ask your DM' questions
If a DM allows guns, there is nothing stopping any playable race using them. The only thing that really does with weapons is if they're marked 'Heavy' and you're playing a small character
Nothing about the kobold PC race option says they can't use guns, but guns are an optional rule
Apologies!
s'all good, just giving you a heads up
can someone explain to me what a foci is, i don't really understand it
Will keep these questions for my eventual DM. Just working on a Kobold PC
It’s used to satisfy the material component for certain spells.
Fireball, for instance, normally requires the caster to use a tiny ball of bat guano and sulfur.
so i have to gather resources during an adventure to craft & cast spells
If the caster is able to use a spellcasting focus, like a wand, they can simply use that instead.
ok so
to cast fireball
i either need a wand, sulphur & bat guano, or a 4th level spell slot
one of those 3
or maybe 3rd level
idk
Fireball is a 3rd level spell, so you need a 3rd-level spell slot (or higher).
Regardless of the material components.
You have to spend the spell slot no matter what, unless your character has a rule that says otherwise.
In addition to the spell slot, you need to satisfy all the components of the spell.
Fireball has verbal, somatic, and material components.
For the material components, you can use either the specified ingredients (guano and sulfur) or a spellcasting focus.
verbal i assume just means i have to say something, so if my character can't talk it dont work, but 2nd one?
Somatic is some forceful gesture: a wave of your hand, for example.
a flick of the tongue
Spellcasting gestures might include a forceful gesticulation or an intricate set of gestures. If a spell requires a somatic component, the caster must have free use of at least one hand to perform these gestures.
thanks
The verbal and somatic components are largely up to your personal preference and flavor, but most importantly they must be noticable. They are loud or obvious enough that everyone around you knows you're casting a spell.
You’re required to have a free hand, though it could potentially be flavored as a flick of the tongue.
That’s something you’d have to discuss with your DM.
Anyway, for spells that have both S and M, you can use the same hand for both.
So in this case, a flick of your wand.
So altogether, you need to:
- spend a spell slot
- shout the magic incantation (verbal)
- wave your wand (somatic + material)
It’s also important to remember that a focus won’t replace material components that have a gold cost or are consumed by the spell.
And it does nothing for spells without a material component.
so i can bribe magic with gold?
most of that seemed straightforward with the exception of this last part
Identify, for example, has this material component:
a pearl worth at least 100 gp and an owl feather
So you need to buy a pearl before you can cast the spell.
A spellcasting focus won’t work.
Most spells don't require any material components that cost gold or are consumed, but the ones that do tend to be a little stronger to make up for it. The cost for balance comes out of your coinpurse in the end!
And then if it says it’s consumed, then you lose the item by casting the spell.
So you’d need to provide a new one each time you want to cast it.
Revivify, for example:
diamonds worth 300 gp, which the spell consumes
You’d need to get another 300gp worth of diamonds every time.
Whereas for Identify, which doesn’t consume it, you just need to get the pearl once and can then reuse it.
this is probably getting more freeform, but due to the unique nature of the game, could I theoretically have a wand which HAS a pearl/other materials embedded into it, to still use it? (also just trying my best to think outside the box)
That’s something you’d have to discuss with your DM.
yea i dont have one, but is that the type of stuff to think about
how do i make a character
Seems a like a viable solution, sure.
There’s some good links here to get you started:

The first few chapters of the Basic Rules cover character creation. To start, you’ll want to pick a race, class, and background.
And then there’s links there where you can make a character sheet as well.
thank you
so i was messing around with dnd beyond, and i was messing around with the character creator/sorcerer, why is grappler the only feat I'm able to take?
Your options are limited in the free materials
That’s the only feat available in the free Basic Rules.
i dont understand
If you want more content on DndBeyond they need to be purchased individually or in books
the basic rules are free materials to get started; expanded content costs money
i was just brainstorming the type of character i wanted, and i kind of found something to lean towards but it's alright ill just brainstorm not using dndbeyond
It’s also possible for that content to be shared with you through a campaign.
If someone else in the campaign has purchased it and Content Sharing is enabled for the campaign.
yea i think that's a bit too far ahead
can someone explain to me the difference between a feat and a ua feat?
UA stands for "Unearthed Arcana" and its D&D's term for unreleased playtest material. Like a beta test in a video game. UA content (including feats) are unofficial, and the represent the early test versions of content before it actually gets published in a book. Sometimes, the designers might decide something did not preform well during testing and never actually publish it. But usually, you can find an official version of the same thing in one of the published books
and i assume it's the host's discression to use the ua stuff vs normal stuff?
Typically, yes. Though it would be quite rare to find a game where you are allowed to use a UA version of something if there is an official version. Normally, when a DM allows their players to use UA content, what they mean is the UA for anything that hasn't been released yet. We normally get the UA versions of things several months before they are published in any books, because the designers want player feedback
gotcha, 'cause there was one feat i had found out about, and it kinda propelled me to inquiring into the discord because it was one of those things I think i'd have fun with,
If you want to talk about specific feats, and how to make a character around them, you can hop over to the #character-discussion channel to get some help with that
yea i should probably move there, thanks for the help, y'all
Can someone explain how advantage and disadvantage work? To my understanding, advantage means you add an extra die roll to that players turn. In not sure what disadvantage means however
in both cases, you roll two 20-sided dice where you would ordinarily only roll one. For advantage, you use the highest result, and for disadvantage you use the lowest.
For a hand axe would you add 1d6 plus strength modifier
for the damage, yes
Same for throwing
roll a d16, add STR, and you have your damage
if i'm not mistaken, yes
What about bonus atk bonuses
so where do i go to join a game
what are you referring to?

Ok i see
when you roll for attack, you roll a d20, add your proficiency bonus, and the attribute you use for that weapon
Okay thank you!
then it just happens
nah, that object will be affected by your spell, and then the second part of the spell happens (the Investigation check part) whenever someone tries to inspect it
Yes and no
verbal (V) , somatic(S) and material components(M)
verbal: say stuff to cast the spell
somatic: move your arms to cast the spell
material components: stuff you need to cast the spell (you don't need to care about this if you have a focus and if the components don't specify a price)
A lot material components don’t consume I’m pretty sure
it was just to give an idea
What do you mean by backfire?
Spells don’t do that
Nice! What did you pick?
Which class is a pure healer-support? (I Have to make two player-controlled NPCs for a party of 3 that’s going to run Curse of Strahd).
Any good place to find books
Physical or digital books?
eBay for physical or, better, your local store (patronize them, keep them open).
Digital, you have to decide which website or Virtual Tabletop you’ll end up using regularly.
Physical
Your local game shop, your local/national retail book chain store, and Amazon. eBay is an option if you want used.
How can I play with people
In person or online?
Online like I want to play I got characters created but I don't know how to actually join
This does not truly exist for players but NPCs can be fudged. See #dm-discussion for more
Much obliged, chaps

I’ve already gone over them I bit, and I bought the players handbook a while ago, I just need help with the experience of actually playing
Then you can use #looking-for-players to try and find a group
is there dragon egg in dnd if so what kind of dragon eggs>
There aren’t any dragon egg items RAW iirc
ok thanks
Not as an item, no, but dragon eggs do exist.

Whose your arch nemesis
Let's keep things on topic - this channel is to help new-to-D&D folks get started and help them learn core game mechanics and concepts.
dont know, havent run a campaign yet
Don't share your exact age or other perrsonal information! It's against server rules.
We’re more than happy to help if you re-ask your question without the personal identifying information though
I didn’t say my age I said my sons can you put the message back on so I can edit it!
I was only asking for advice
Thankyou
Hi all new to the group I have been interested in D&D for a long time just never ventured, my son has just expressed an interest and hoping to run a game for him and some friends with me as DM 😮, looking for some advice to keep them interested (so I can keep playing 😂). Any advice is greatly recieved. Extra information didn’t know he was interested but took him away this weekend for his birthday and he bought himself the players guide, starter set, essential set and numerous dice sets so he’s well up for it
I recommend you run the starter set right out of the box tbh. It's a great introductory adventure and it should last you several weeks
use the pre-generated characters, but allow them to change their characters backstories and personalities if they wish. Just jump in, start playing even if you feel like you don't know what you're doing, and learn as you go
That’s the plan then move onto the essential set before we branch out, they are all well up for it though and think we could move through pretty quickly
Iv told them we will use the pre gen characters first and then create there own after to give them a feel for it
That's a great idea.
hello
Welcome!
Hi I'm new looking for a game to play
Read #find-a-game and check out our LFG channels
Looking for Game
Hey, only ever played baldurs gate, which i know is dnd based. is it the same exact rules or are there differences?
never played real dnd, just some loose imitations of it btw
Some difference because Baldur's Gate is a video game - that said I hear it's pretty close to D&D 5th Edition rules (current D&D edition)
I mean it’s similar not identical but it’s fairly close
any differences i should know before going into the find a game?
I’m looking to play a one shot lol but I have t figured out how to use the find a game 😂 🥲
Having a really hard time trying to find a campaign to get into for the weekend, any tips other than scanning the looking for players channel pretty much 24/7?
