Crap guide to dnd by jocat
Is fun to watch and explains it well
Ain't too bad
The dm of my first camp walked me through that, I'm still very thankful of him tbh
How to we find a dungeon master?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Oh okay thank you!
Ya welcome
Usually there's a local community for this online, so just find it and stalk the group if you prefer offline games
Good luck and have fun
tysm taz !
One last question. How many dice do we need to buy if we were to play alone
My pleasure
Well 1 Set if its you only 2 if also a dm is involved
hello?
@covert mesa hi
so I wouldn't need to use different dices for different characters determinations?
A lot if people say dongeons and dragosn is fun but i dont know where to get the gaem
omg the dates go back -35000 DR ? so is -35000 DR the beginning? theres no way i can read all this ill be studying Forgotten Realms lore til im dead lol
They sell dice for dnd in set, so just buy the set and you're good to go, you can figure out the rest as you play!
You can find it on amazon or d&d beyond !
if your an online type of player
As many as you like. You really don't need multiple sets in a solo game.
How do u play online?
so I can buy like 10 different sets of dices 😂
oh okay
Usually, voice chat over Discord or Zoom or Teams, and some kind of virtual tabletop like Roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo for visuals and dice.
Yes
How do we use the oracle tho? I see Ginny Di using that in her game
I'd say to Google it
Kk
it says to find a game thats traditional, community or paid
We call that dice goblins
Ohhh that's what they're called
And we love beign dice goblins
since im new what kind of game shpuld i do so that i can draw my person
At my place we just call them dice addicts
that kinda makes more sense then dice goblins
Just a dnd term for dice enjoyers
If you mean what I think, look at Hero Forge.
okay
I heard a lot of people use roll 20 in their games
Yes
D&D Beyond plus Chrome with Beyond20 plus Roll20. Up and away!
It's a famous site
there's no complete public "official" timeline, but this blog has collected the timelines from official sources into one unified timeline: https://alphastream.org/index.php/2020/04/09/the-official-timeline-for-the-forgotten-realms-and-its-adventures/
Do you recommend buying the subscription for d&d beyond?
Naw
Not immediately. I never have.
cough foundry cough
What the difference between the dices ? Like what are most of them mainly used for?
D20 for everything the others mainly situational
D4 as example healing
So can you still use a dungeons master screen even if your playing on your own?
D6 d12 d8 mainly for weapon damage
Thats mainly for keeping notes, names, Potential encounters etc
So you don't need one if your playing on your own?
No, but you still sure can use it if you want
Yep
Wait so you guys told me that for character creation its better to do them digitally right?
I'm making notes so that I can know when I start
Thank you!
So to play the actual game would you still need to buy dices and all that other stuff
not if you are playing digital
most time u will type ( roll d4) or something of that nature and it will generate a number for that roll
You can use dice apps.
Okay that is totally helpful for my notes ! Thank you !
Aye
Hm?
Hello
Hello Teddv
Hi
helloo
explodes
Sup
Im thinking of creating my first tiefling
I enjoy kenku alot one of the campaign im in im a kenku battlebard
speaking of that are elfs good to have?
Solid choice for a race
I haven't seen many high elfs being used though. Why is that?
I mostly play saytr but im thinking of changing up trying something different.
Well alot of factors can be the reason
Mine is i simply Prefer other races
Like tieflings
They arent bad
why have a seen people's characters sometimes be a cat
Tabxi
Or kitsune in some settings
not at all
It's whatever you want
It's a role-playing game.
i love being half man half goat
that reminds me of grover from percy jackson
thats exactly what i am
Satyr as example
Minotaur is a thing too
Dragonborn
ciclops?
Not yet I don't think
Well I guess you could homebrew one
What classes do you recommend are the most used in dungeons and dragons?
i come across alot of rogues but usually it pretty diverse they all have their place in a party
That's a Q for #character-discussion
oh my fault
S'all good
Play whatever you like
This is really helping me make my summarized d and d rules
@steep mesa if you like you can message me
Hi, everyone. I'm a Wildemount module player, that just started playing in August. Which books do I =need= ?
I do not see myself DM'ing anytime soon.
need? nothing
you can just use the free basic rules, online
however the phb (player's handbook) is a very good investment
and if you want to go further, TCOE (tasha's cauldron of everything) and XGTE (xanathar's guide to everything) both have some very useful stuff for players
Thought so. For now, I've been bumming books off my DM, and I love tactile books
Do I need module books when I'm not DM'ing?
Not at all. Using knowledge found in those books as a player is bad form and generally regarded as cheating.
Thanks. I'm in a game for recreational therapy, and my DM isn't a rules stickler, but still 🙂
I just learned the plus after the skill already includes your proficiency
My dm taught me wrong
I don't blame them
Hey wassup guys im new to DnD and would like to join a campaign
im new i know kinda how to play and lookin for a game
hey im new too, could someone help me make a character? im just getting started and barely know how it works
#character-discussion can help with feedback on character builds.
That said, check the first chapter of the free basic rules - it goes step by step on how to create a character: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Also check the pinned messages here in the channel - lots of useful reosurces to help get you started with D&D
Thanks bro 😻
Getting into d&d as a player, do I need any of the books? If so, which ones?
You don’t
Start with the free basic rules and if you like the game enough, look into possibly buying the Players Handbook but yeah... start with the free things and decide if you want more later.
Buy the players handbook for sure everything else is optional…… also buy dice. Lots and lots of dice
Again you can get started with the free basic rules - it has everything needed to start playing D&D
Free basic rules are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
That to
I have created my first d and d character !!
now that i created some characters though how do i start playing on my own?
you can . according to ginny di, you can play on your own if you don't have a group to play with.
i jus don't know how to start that
you cannot normally, i'm not sure how that youtuber recommends going about it
i would start by trying to find a group
The game isnt really designed for solo play, thats something she’s describing for those forced to
guys very quick question and probably stupid question, do you need to first take an action and then take a bonus action? or can you flip the order
Doesn’t matter action order
Yeah
how do i change my digital dice though
wdym?
Wdym?
nvm i figured it out
Most of the time it doesn’t matter. But if the action is used to set up the bonus then yes it matter
Read the description for the bonus action you’re thinking of taking
Some have prerequisites that you do something with your action first
Exactly
Like im looking at something like wrathful / searing / thunderous smite
and it says that i can cast it as a bonus action
that can be done in any order
👍 got it
so a normal vegeance paladin round would look something like
vow of enmity for bonus action + hit melee with action and if it crit you smite it
next round you cast something like wrathful smite + hit melee / hit melee + polearm
something like that?
Hi everyone! I just got introduced to dnd the other day, I have little to no clue how to play. I created a character in dnd beyond, and have no experience playing or observing.

Take a look through the basic rules, and feel free to ask questions to clarify how things go
Anyone else love answering dnd questions or just me?
I enjoy helping
I dont know what that last part is
Activating Vow of Emnity is a bonus action. You can take the Attack Action and attack with your weapon
Casting one of the smite spells is a bonus action. You can cast it as a bonus and take the Attack Action
On any given turn you only have one bonus action, so you have to choose which spell or ability you want to spend it on
As you play more you need to become accustomed to thinking of the specific parts of your turn and how you’re going to use them
Action, bonus action, movement, reaction
hi
Hello
hii peeps
Umm hi, I'm like a lvl 5 Bard/thief, I started playing at cons and a library, but it's hard for me to get around and travel for a game, I'm looking for low stakes and casual, I'm pretty unexperienced all things consider. I'm not really playing to win per say. I'm just very lonely and isolated and need friends, though with all these rules is small talk even allowed? Not necessarily in the main discord, but I supposed separate unofffical Discords where rules can be more lax and casual, I don't really know how to start. I'm slightly busy for my semester, but after that I can play during the Holidays. I'm hoping at this point just like 3 hours in a weekly session.
have a look in #looking-for-players
thanks
we dont actually play games here
again very new

I am looking for a game and the lfg page has given me nothing anyone need a spot im good with rp and chill
I'd recommend applying in more places than just the #find-a-game channel
There are a few subreddits, facebook pages out there. Roll20 can also be alright
Hey guys! I'm new around here, have never played a game of dnd before so I was wondering, what are some good (and free, if possible) options for creating character sheets? Also does anyone know of good resources for complete beginners? I've read the handbook but still was a little confused, and don't have a group that I'm able to play with currently

Awesome, I'll definitely look into it, thanks!
Can Changelings shapechange into looking exactly like other people if they fit the same limb structure and close height and stuff?
no reason you couldnt
in fact the description of the shapechanger ability suggests using it that way, via this line: "You can’t duplicate the appearance of an individual you’ve never seen"
Thanks, just making sure
I'm a little interested as well, can I friend u if u or I get a campaign invite?

For Two-Weapon Fighting. It says that the 2nd attack can’t use an Ability Modifier. As someone who is very new, can someone explain to me what exactly is an Ability Modifier in attacks
Hellooooooo
I've never played dnd before but have been wanting to for a long time now
I used to listen to a handful of dnd podcasts too
Ah that, thanks
it's added to hit for all attacks. The off-hand attack from two-weapon fighting does not add the ability modifier to damage
Yes
I plan on running a Dnd game round robin style where we take turns dming is that a community game or is community game a specific thing
How many sessions will each DM do?
Short adventures?
Nah a campaign
Well I'll be a player when the other DM is gonna dm
Isn't that "cheating" because you have the meta-knowledge of the campaign?
No cause we'd run different campaigns
I mean I could dm for you I gonna be looking for a group that's why I'm asking
Wanna make sure I use right stuff lol since I not new to dming but new to here
To detail everything
You add your Ability Modifier to the attack roll and damage roll of attacks with weapons. For melee, it's Strength. For ranged, it's Dexterity.
If a weapon has the Finesse property, you can use either one, your choice (such as a Dagger using STR or DEX, your choice)
If you're proficient with the weapon, you add your proficiency to the attack roll (but not the damage).
TWF (the action) lets you, provided you're using light weapons, make an additional attack (on top of however many your Attack Action did), but this doesn't add Ability Modifier to damage.
you still add Ability Modifier to hit, and if proficient in the weapon, proficiency bonus to hit.
@fleet field i tried ..no ine is playing 5 e...i with this group was ONLY for dnd there's like 6 people running other games ..
…this discord is only for dnd
There should only be posts in there for 5th edition dnd
Are you sure?
Yes
A Lv1 Druid with +3 Wis would be able to prepare 4 Spells right?
thats exactly right
Thanks
any tips on how i should go about making a character?
I like to start with a personality and a general theme/vibe you want to achieve with the character. After that, then go about figuring out what mechanics most closesly create that concept
i choose a class i like the vibe of, and work off of that
ok

Question im new to dnd
and i wanna be able to play wit qwith my online aand long distance friends is anyway to buy the physisical and that it works with beyond too?

What are you specifically asking?
Getting physical books doesn't also grant access on DNDBeyond (introducing license keys to the books is a whole logistics issue)
and vice versa, buying on DDB doesn't give physical items
you could totally all use physical character sheets and roll physical dice while just using a Virutal Tabletop like Roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo as the battlemap and discord to talk
so i have to buy both?
No? Why would you?
You can use either, but one doesn't equal the other
Is DNDbeyond the best way to play dnd online
It's a way, as any other way is
ok
For example, I use DDB sheets, Discord voice chat, and Owlbear Rodeo 2.0
if i buy beyond can i print emt o use em for irl campaigns?
Im trying to type in the Looking for Players Section to post a campaign but it says i dont have perms?
You've got to use #find-a-game
Having trouble to understand what exactly you roll for Attack Spells and what modifiers are added. Currently reading through Player’s Handbook but having issues understanding
So, let's come at it from the ground up. What's your class, what are you doing?
For a spell attack roll, you add your proficiency bonus and your casting stat for that spell
For a spell damage roll, you add nothing unless it specifically says you do
I’m just trying to learn the combat system rn for a sort of Campaign my friend is doing, not actually trying anything
I guess it would be Druid casting Frostbite though
What is the casting stat
Wdym use it? is it using this portion as described? :If you want to submit a post of your own, you'll need to use one of the bot commands below.
For traditional games, use /looking-for players.
For community games, use /looking-for community
For paid games, use /looking-for paid
It depends on the class you learn the spell through
So, as a Druid, your spellcasting ability is Wisdom
so, your Spell Attack Bonus as a Druid is your Wisdom Modifier + your Proficiency bonus
yes
Frostbite doesn’t need an attack roll btw
Ohhhh
Dunno why my brain didn’t click that
gotcha thanks
What is a Spell Attack Modifier
It’s described under the “spellcasting” Druid feature
Prof bonus + spellcasting ability modifier
Also, yeah, for Frostbite, the target makes a saving throw. But, your DC is 8 + Spellcasting Ability Modifier + your Proficiency bonus.
To go shorthand, 8 + spell attack bonus is a nice way to remember it.
It has finally clicked in my head
Thank you both of you
All g
Just to double check
A Druid with +3 Wis and +2 Proficency would have the modifier of +5 right?
Yes
Thanks
So their spell attack rolls would be d20+5
And the dc for their spells’ saving throws (spell save dc) would be 13
Do Spell Attack Rolls need to beat AC or Spell Save DC
Spell attack rolls need to beat the AC of the target
there's two kinds
When you make an Attack, you need to hit the target's AC.
When you force the target to make a saving throw, they want to beat your save DC. (you want them to fail)
And as for buying beyond can those be used to be printed and played irl?
The spell save dc is what the target needs to beat when a spell calls for the target to make a saving throw
Thanks
Like, buying books on dnd beyond?
buying digitals and printing them for my irl friends be aable to read em and play
Am I correct in assuming that when using the help action to give an ally advantage on attacking an enemy that you must choose which ally gets the advantage when you use it?
You cast Frostbite and your target has to roll to see if they get hurt.
You cast Primal Savagery and you roll to see if you hurt the target.
idk im fully new to dnd
Yes
I believe so, it says a friendly creature
and i have both my online games aand irl friends and i wanna play with both
I don’t think you can
aww its bit sad idk wich one i will choose then lol
dont know wich to do cause neither is cheaap lol like to point i could just buy both
For Druid HP at Higher Level, does “5 + Con Modifier per Druid Level after 1st” means you add that to the 1st Level Druid HP?
Yep. Every Druid level after 1st, you gain that much max hp
Alright, the wording was confusing me a bit
hit points is 8+conmod at 1st, and then 5+conmod per druid level after 1st.
So with a +2 con mod, you’d have 10 max hp at first level, then 17 at second, 24 at 3rd, etc
And if you were to later boost your con mod, it retroactively affects every previous level
What would +1 Con be for 2nd and 3rd Level
Thanks, trying to figure out the maths in my head

There
I don't think I should play dnd...
why not?
Got yelled at for the 5th time for not knowing what to do....
by who?
Can I dm you?
sure
I've dropped out of at least 15 other DND games, and at least 7 games that just ended up not happening.
That's no omen going "grr, don't play DND", you're fine.
You'll find one I have faith
Can you Wildshape into Swarms?
You cannot, as they are RAW multiple beasts even if they use a single stat block
You can turn into 'a beast' singular
Starting at 2nd level, you can use your action to magically assume the shape of** a** beast that you have seen before.
And swarms in their stats have 'beasts' plural (like with swarm of rats:)
Medium swarm of tiny beasts, unaligned
Whats a way to get advantage on attack rolls?
I think the easiest way is either flanking an enemy, so having a two characters stand on opposite ends of an enemy, or through ambushes, so hiding and getting a surprise attack on an enemy.
The other ways are mainly magic or class abilities. Barbarians can reckless attack, giving them advantage on an attack, although it gives enemies advantage on the barbarian in return. True strike is a cantrip that gives advantage for example, or faerie fire for example also grants advantage if I remember correctly.
There are lots of ways; flanking, an ally takes the help action, enemy is blinded, you're attacking from hidden, the enemy is prone and you're within 5ft
Specifically wanted to make an agressive rogue swashbuckler
#character-discussion would be the place to ask
Is there a way to maybe push an enemy to make it go prone and force it to stand up as an action?
im really new to dnd but if your using magic i know that theres a spell that forces the enemy to go prone from semi decent range
Use the Shove action.
well if it succeeds
I am completely new to actual dnd. The only real experience I have with it is roleplay, and Crown of The Magister. How do I start with making a character?

The first four chapters go through making a character
Do I have to start at Level 1? I assume its more fun that way
uhm im pretty sure thats up to the dm
Thank you! Both of you lol
The DM decides what level a campaign starts out
Got it, I'll go check out the thing before I start asking more questions.
coming from another newbie it doesnt help a ton like its useful but in my opinion finding a kind dm to help you out with your first campaign made it a lot easier for me but that may just be me
Different people learn in different ways. I'm also personally the type of person that has hard time internalizing a whole bunch of text, but was lucky enough that a friend of mine was willing to run me a simple adventure for me to get the basics
But the problem with having a "nice DM to explain the rules" is that it's gonna be taking the time of that DM, and there's already way more players than there are DMs, so in the absense of being able to find someone to teach you, reading through the basic rules is definitely the best bet which you can do at any point 😛
i know i know i was extremely lucky to find the dm that i did for my first session i just meant don’t expect this to cover absolutely everything/it’s okay if a lot that seemed confusing it was for me to
I just don't know a lot about how actual dnd goes, its hard to explain. I've been in a session before and I know how to play, its just I've never done it super officially.
That's why it's the Basic rules
once again i know but still it can be a lot was just trying to give just a little bit of advice from someone’s who is also extremely new
Is stansing up an action
You can spend half your movement to stand up when prone, but it doesnt take an action
Swash rogue gets all the normal rogue ways to get off sneak attack plus their ones so they normally always get sneak attack
Yeah otherwise i can also before level 3 shove to get sneak attack bonus
Do rogues have multiple attacks per turn?
Like at all can they have more attacks per attack action, not finesse bonus action
Okay, what classes get multiattacks?
Grease, ball bearings (surface dependant), a friendly fighter. These are allies of the stabby rogue.
What could be a trade off for getting a gun? As in my character would start with just the basic reneisance pistol?
Ofcourse talked with the dm, just wondering what could tip the scales
Baking cookies for them
Good idea, but if id want to balance the character while at it?
Barbarian, Monk, and Fighter
And paladin and ranger for the spell-guys
Hi everyone, i'm super new to DnD (came from BG3 and it got me into it) and stumbled upon a forgotten race (couldn't find anything beside one wiki page that is short but clear) and i was wondering if it's still playable despite beeing absent from 5e ! I'm talking about the Markeen from Zakhara. https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Markeen I've some ideas for a character of such race but idk if that's allowed :c
I mean ammunition and powder supply could be major supply issue in game that would limit your use of a firearm.

If you want to include in your backstory that you were born at the same time as someone else whom you share an identical appearance with, that is a story beat you can organise with your DM
Mechanically, I'd play them as a Variant Human and pick a feat that evokes the idea of being a lesser genie like Magic Initiate Druid
Hum, i was not exagerating when i said i was new to DnD, i don't understand what you're talking about haha. I just wanted to know if playing something that didn't made it to the fifth edition was still possible or not. But i guess it depends who's DMing the game, ok i guess it's an answer haha. So possible but depends on the persons i'm playing with.
Wait firearms use powder?
Up to your DM to allow firearms and decide what’s needed for them to work in their game.
Spend your action on your turn to respond to a given trigger with a preset action, and this also costs your action when triggered: https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Combat#toc_28
Hi
So both action and reaction?
Yes, but read it carefully. You spend your action to save it, and then use your reaction to set it off.
That's for the ready action yeah
When i charm an npc succesfully with charm person, can i for example tell him to take his armor and/or kill himself
Not counting alignment here, only technicality
hi
Charm person says they gain the charmed condition (which means you have advantage on charisma checks on them) and that they believe they're your good friend. That's basically it. It's up to your DM to decide if you could persuade them to injure themselves, but I think most DMs would say that it's an unreasonable request. Persuasion checks aren't mind control, after all.
That would ultimately be up to your DM. The spell you're probably looking for is Dominate Person, which a spellcaster can only get at level 9 at the earliest.
I am hoping to get into dnd proper sometime soon. BG3 and critical role fan. Consuming content for like 3 years. Nervous as I don’t have a friend group who plays. Curious what books I should absolutely buy.
I second this, would really appreciate a point in the right direction
Its possible to start playing D&D without buying anything. The basic rules are available for free online. As a new player, the main thing purchasing any books will give you is just more character customization options. New races, subclasses, etc. If that interests you, the best starting purchase is always the Player's Handbook. After that Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything are the best expansions for new subclasses (Tasha's even comes with a new class), and Monsters of the Multiverse is the best one for new playable races

You can find a link to the free rules, as well as other helpful tools in this bot post
Ty. If I were playing over the web about 100$ to start playing if I were using dnd beyond.
Like I just said, you can get started for completely free, even using D&D Beyond. All of the basic rules are there. You can access the 12 starting classes, and 1 subclass for each, as well as the 9 starting races.
You only have to pay for stuff if you want to unlock extra customization
With D&D Beyond you don't need to buy the full books but rather you can buy individual playable races/sub-classes for about $2 each.
That’s sick.
if i was to play a monk do i have to be all like i love be a monk and doing thing monks do
I'm not 100% I understand what you are asking, but your character's personality and how you role play them are completely up to you. Your class is just a set of powers and mechanics, nothing more
what do you mean by this? if you mean like the historical meaning of monks like in a monastery with ancient texts, no not really. it fully depends on the world you're in. they're most stereotypically guys who punch things. religion is secondary in the stereotype. but also what colossus said. it's fully up to you what your character's personality is
oh ok thank you
only reson i ask cause i don´t know what i really want they all shound cool but i just don´t know what i want to play
Could just be a martial artist. A professional face-kicker. An assassin whose body is the weapon. An acrobat. A bodyguard? Grab the principle and use the grapple rules to whisk them away from danger!
Priest, performer, pirate. I can see all these things with monk.
if you're a fan of any streams, you can play what your favorite character plays! that's how i started out. my first Real Character™ was a wizard with keen mind due to my obsession with caleb widogast. he turned out a completely different character due to race (changeling) and backstory, but the building block of a wizard with keen mind helped me build everything else !!
or, you can do it in reverse. figure out what kind of person you want to play as, give yourself the backstory, and then pick a class that best compliments them
even if you don't watch streams, finding classes that line up with some of your favorite characters in various media might be a good place to start.
i want to play to use a normal guy to who find out he a asimar when he turns idk 16 or 18 and now has to be a good guy and beat the big bad evils but he just lazy and does not want to do it but has and kind like to fight but just suck at it
idk i want to do something with the stars but i don´t know to
Pro tip for D&D; make a character that wants to engage with the game
They want to be an adventurer, they want to work with a party, they want to be a hero/save the day
at least at first: it makes it easy for roleplaying if they want to join in
plus if they want to help and be good at fighting but just suck at it... adds to comedy
You don't want to do it, sure. But you can't let your mother/ mentor/ significant other down, so...
k i will that in mind
how about they want to be a hero but don´t want to be mean but they super nice but so bad at be nice
If you'd like help designing this character, #character-discussion would be the best place to discuss that
ok i will move over there

The bot posts above have stuff to check out to learn
oh ty
I have absolutely no clue what this game is about, can anyone explain in a nutshell?
hellooooooooooooo
so theres dungeons
and theres dragons too
Sounds good
And theres dice too
So its like yahtzee with some rpg elements
Idk ive never played
The absolutely most basic explanation is: The DM describes the world and the situation your characters are in. Then you describe what you would like to do. Then your DM describes how that action affects the world. If there is a chance your action might fail, the DM will decide how difficult that task is, and assign it a "Difficulty Class" (DC) which is a number from 1 to 30. You roll a d20, and add your skill modifier to that number. If you roll equal to or greater than that DC number you succeed. If you roll below it, you fail. Then the DM describes how that success or failure impacts the world, and you do it all again
There are more complicated rules for combat, but if you understand this high level concept, you will understand most of the game
Well, you just need to get a group of 4-5 people, and all agree to play together. You can do this by pretty much any method you can communicate with people. Ask your friends, go to a local game store, start a club, etc. If you want to find a game online, you can make posts on forums like Reddit or Facebook or Discord. In this server, we have a #find-a-game which will give you instructions on how to make a post here, in our looking-for-game channels.
Appreciated

what does user id mean?
In what context?
Hey guys, so I wanna ask my dad if he can get me a DnD kit, should I ask for the newer Starter kit, the 2014 one, or the Essential tools? I heard the Essential tools has more to it and the side quests are great for when you have a busy schedule but the Starters are more linear and come with pre generated characters, tho essential has the DM slide, so is it worth it to buy over the first two for that?
When I'm in the looking for players thing at the bottom it says user id
That is your ID number through discord. Its just something bots can reference to know what user the post is attached to
That’s just the way the threads show up
hi so i'm starting up a campaign with a couple friends, i'm a first time player and DM, which i'm totally excited and ready for, but i am wondering if the grid of the map makes a difference?
my dad has old HeroScape tiles, all of them are hexes instead of squares, and i was thinking that because i dont have a lot of minis for dnd, i could use the stuff from that game, to save money. will the hexes work just as well as squares would? i'd love to have 3d maps and this would allow me to build them, but i also want to make it as easy as possible for all players (myself included) to grasp the combat system and keep it flowing
Yeah hexes work a bit better than squares sometimes for AOE spells
Using old board game figures is a great way to save money
The DMG has detailed rules for how to play using hexes. It never took off quite as much as squares, but when 5e was originally designed they were treated as equal options, with equal amounts of rules for them
i hadn't thought of that, but that makes me want to do it even more, thank you
druids just know every spell on the list? so i have to put every single one on the character sheet?
another reason to buy the DMG i guess! i had no idea there were actually already rules around it
this is so helpful! I'm completely new and the summery is so clear and made the concept easy. Thank you.
All depends what you want
sorry, how am i meant to fit all of the druid spells on one character sheet?
You don’t you just add the ones you pick everyday
Most character sheets have a checkmark for prepared spells, just put the ones you like and checkmark the ones you prepare

You’re also allowed to use as many pages as you want
My tip is to just put the names on the sheet that you might use or have prepared that day, or even just use flash cards. for my paper game I put spells I wanted on flash cards, colour coded by slot level, and used those instead. Usually still with a paraphrased explanation of the spell on it and a page number, as some are quite lengthy- it a rule question came up, use the page number (or look up online) for the official wording.
@left galleon hey, check the links in the post from Dyno above
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube. It's linked above.
Hi
Yeah it helped me a lot its a rrly good tool
Heyy
Hello
Hey guys, i have decided to run my groups next DnD adventure, i am wondering what books etc would be nessesary as a starter DM
You can use the free Basic Rules without needing to buy anything yet.
There are plenty of free adventures.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/dungeon-masters-only/43718-list-of-free-dnd-campaigns
none , the basic rules are free in the pinned posts here
But:
Players handbook
Dungeonmasters guide
Monster manual optionally
ah thank you so much
i wanna try and do the best i can to make a good adventure that can keep all interested in our party
i got the players handbook because that would just get more into the game as a whole
hey guys I cant seem to find any newbie friendly games in #looking-for-community so if any of you can show me some thatd be much appreciated!
Even if a game doesn’t specify that it’s new player friendly, it likely is
Also, try looking in #looking-for-community as well

I also recommend checking out places like Reddit for people looking for players/DMs. There is also the alternative of checking local game stores for other players. Adventurers League is also a good place to check since a lot of people are friendly and they are more official which can provide more safeguards but can restrict creativity (not that big of an issue but certain races are restricted)
Hello everyone! I played AL a few years ago and have not been around in a while. I am looking to create a character as I've lost my character sheets from back in the day. However, I could use some direction if anyone is interested in giving a hand. I'm looking at making a Dragonborn Paladin, want to sway chaotic good, maybe with an interesting backstory?
Maybe have them had someone who stole something of great importance from the character and the thief got away via some legal loophole now you have decided to take the law into your own hands and now are trying to make things right in the world outside of the law
Hmmmm, that could work. Thanks for your advice. I know alot of people like to play by the norms but I tend to play a little bit outside of it. Just dont want to catch grief for it. But I do love me a nice solid backstory of betrayal.
👍
Oh btw this would be best in #character-discussion
@oak holly ahhh yes thank you
Np
Hi, new guy here trying to learn and maybe play a game though cant find anyone, any tips?
Have you read the basic rules yet?
good idea, ill look into that
They’re linked in the pinned messages of this channel
Hello
hello. nice to meet y'all. I hope to have learned enough about to game within a few weeks before I join my first official session.
Welcome if questions arise feel free to reach out
Not yet! Still looking around.
If you're asking for players then I'd be happy to join
Same i just joined this server to look for a campain to join
Check #find-a-game
thanks mate
Hi everyone! Old newbie here. I've had some experience with Warhammer 40k in my younger days and have always wanted to try DnD.
However, I now live out in the wilds of New Zealand and no one actually plays in irl in my nearest town.
And I have suddenly learnt that people can play over servers! How cool is that?!
Thanks for this amazing server ❤️ I really hope I can join a game one day soon ✨️
does the find a game is a good place to find aa campaign when is my first one?
Yes
also what is (Non-D&D games are not.)
Games for any edition of D&D are allowed. (Non-D&D games are not.)
You can only advertise for D&D games (of any edition). Non-D&D games aren't allowed to be advertised.
idk i might got l9ost in the meaning i dont see why someone would advertise a non dnd game in a dnd discord
They generally wouldn’t, but the mods just want to make sure
Some people misunderstand D&D to mean TTRPG, like how someone might refer to all video games as 'xbox' or the whole internet as 'the google'
So they assume that if it's a TTRPG, it's D&D and therefore they can promote it here
Not sure if this is where I need to ask this. Anyways I’m completely new to d&d. I’ve never even played a game, however me and my teenagers want to start playing but I will be the dm so I was wondering exactly where do I begin? I have the players handbook, and the DM guide, I also have the essential kit as well as the starter set. I have a few various other items as well but they are but tips and stuff. Can anyone give me insight as to what I need to do to begin this adventure with them? If I need to ask elsewhere can you please guide me to where. Thanks in advance

As for starting the adventure, I suggest reading through one of the adventures provided in the starter or essential kit and get a feel for how it's organized and the plot of the adventure. Then get your group together and begin exploring the story together. The DM sets the scene and asks the players what their characters do, and decides if it's challenging enough to require a dice roll and what the Difficulty Challenge is (DC) - the number the roll has to beat to be successful, etc. And if combat breaks out, running the combat encounter.
Thank you
new to this, excited and eager to come across this community! It is a little overwhelming honestly but hopefully it can be narrowed down as I continue to look, wish everyone the best!
Can npcs enchant weapons to be +1? Or how would do +1s get made. Also is there such a proffesion as an enchanter.
NPCs can do whatever the DM wants
And there can be whatever professions the DM wants too
Assuming by profession you mean job, aka what someone does for a living
Gonna DM my first campaign later this week, wish me luck cuz my players seem pretty unhinged
There are people that make magic items, but it’s not exactly common. Finding a magic item at all is supposed to be something special that only happens once in a while. You can’t go down to fantasy wall-mart and pick up a Holy Avenger. Also, just fyi, “enchanting” and “enchanter” mean something different in D&D than they do in other settings like Skyrim. In D&D, enchantment magic is magic that affects a person’s mind, like charm person or fear. Magic that is placed on an object doesn’t have a specific school of magic, and typically magic items are made by either Wizards or Artificers

Planning on doing this on Thursday, work makes it difficult to plan things out lol
Are parties usually held in vcs or just in text?
Both are common, though I'd wager voice is probably the most popular.
Im honestly very clueless as to how to start

Do I need to make a character before trying to join a campaign, or do most DMs give you time to create a character after you officially join?
I would have a character made just in case but when I dm character creation is part of session 0
I think it depends on your dm
I see, that makes sense. I also want to make characters more fitting for the campaign! I’m gonna try and look for a beginner friendly campaign so hopefully the DM will want to create character in season 0.
I might try and make some characters before joining one though, mostly so I can learn how to use dnd beyond properly since I’ve never used it before.
the good thing about dnd beyond is if you join a campaign you can get access the books of the dm for free (if they have the master subscription)
What does that do? Does it allow you to be more things, bc I’m looking at the races and I thought there was a lot more races in DND?
Many subclasses, races and even a whole other class can be found in other manuals
Like my campaign with my friends we have fairies and angles but I don’t see them on here
Oh
Angel might be a homebrew race
is there slime in dnd
Well, I don’t think they are actually an angel I just don’t know the name of it ;-;
it may be the aasimar
do they use fall ones and other 2
Plasmoids
yea it just i have not seen them use in dnd
hi everyone can anyone tell me how to play DND ? I'm new here
I don’t think I understand what that means, sorry
hello everyone
Flan
here a line to the race https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Aasimar
it has subraces that what i talking about
hi
mmm it will hard to tell on discord

Linking your account means that you'll be able to use everything you own on D&D Beyond in Avrae for free - you can link your accounts here.
this should be some help to you at least
Oh I think she plays a celestial!
She like follows a god, and is very strict on her alignment
Paladin/warlock mostlikely
Both beautiful classes
Ya I think her character is a paladin celestial!
yea a aasmar as guid by the god and kids of gods
beautiful stuff
/celestial
am new so it hard for me to help ::(
Ok so ya, not an angel my bad lol 😂
lol
Totaly fine
thanks
Dnd is big so alot of info to take in
if am a druid of the stars can i be animals right and if so what animals
anyone share link in which i get how to play DND
Ya I remember when I had my first session 0 with my friends, only 3 people knew how to play and 4 of us had no idea what we was doing. So it like a baby setting session of them lore dumping every race and class we was interested in
7 players ??
it the subclass is called Circle of Stars
Thats a bit alot
You can use your wild shape for your stats abilities or to turn into an animal
Someone already shared a series of links with you
Here they are again

Ya it’s also a first time dm too, but it’s been fun! And everyone has showed up to each session beside this last one, 2 couldn’t make it bc they had to go home for thanksgiving break
Aye alright
usually a dnd game is best suited for 4 players
ohh that clean that up as a animal can i talk comon or no if not do i the animal speak
So challenges can be made rather fitting and the party has to work actively together
No you can’t speak in animal form
but certainly growl
I can see that, with 4 newbies as well it takes like 15 minutes to go through a round in a fight lmao
Indeed !
Is there a way I can see which book has which races and classes in dndbeyond?
Usually the store lists below optional purchases like races and subclasses
Dang the one I want is 30 dollars O.0
? you mean the book
Use the webstore not the app
ahh right
You can buy individual races and classes for 1.99
forgot about the app
Ya I’m seeing that now that I’m scrolling, that scared me lmao
What ever you buy from the book brings to main price down
Oh that’s nice to know!
mumbles or you buy all stuff since you really like this hobby way to much mumbles
Ahem apologies i drifted away
Tbf I am new so spending 5 dollars for a couple races and classes I like seems like a good starting point
Indeed
I don’t even have my own dice set yet :’-)
Ya my dm got us those dice mats so we don’t have them roll off the table, but he refuses to use them bc he wants us to fear his dice rolls
Haha classic
So weird random question but is there a mermaid race?
rather a merfolk
the tritons
Hey Alastor!
And water genasi and sea elves
Ahhh true
Rather Acren but have a welcome
I mean your pfp
I do know just messing
Oh ok
I see is there any other water like races?
Tritons, locathah, sea elves, water genasi, vedalken, and (semi-officially) grung: those are your recognized options. Tortle aren't aquatic, but I could see those being included.
I see I see, is there races you would recommend getting as well?
Like just in general
It all depends on what you want to play! There's plenty of options, and you can get them on a case by case basis through DND beyond.
My most recent character is an eladrin
That’s true!
Is a solid choice
Mordenkainen presents; monsters of the multiverse seems to have almost all the races I’m interested
Maybe I’ll officially buy it when I get the chance!
certainly a good choice
Ya I like characters that seem to be from the feywild so it works out
beautiful plane of existence currently rebuilding that
Since my player is from the feywild
Plane of existence? It’s a different world? I thought it was a wacky forest.
Hahahaha
well its infact a world next to the material plane
which is very different to the normal world basicly
Very dangerous but colorful world
Oh, that makes so much more sense now. That’s why my character in my campaign came from a different world than the others.
I thought it was just a backstory place
Never heard of that one, where can i go to read about the different worlds? Is it also on dndbeyond?
Also yt content creators
which give a good explaination on how each world works and what makes them unique
Makes sense, is there one in particular to follow?
alot actually
Runesmith if you want it to be funny as example
AJpicket
MrRhexx
I see I see, ty!
I’m going to play around with dndbeyond a bit and then try and find a campaign
What's the context of "traditional"?
It’s what some people put under game style
That's not really a defined term, you'd have to ask them what they mean by traditional
odd question but im new to D&D and i was wondering if anyone would be willing to teach me about everything

Dang, the finding a game help prompt wasn’t joking about it not being easy 🙃
Finding games in general takes alot of time sometimes
patience is needed sadly
Finding a good table to play at is like dating because you're dealing with people. You may get ghosted, involve in drama, etc.
Ya I don’t want that to happen so I’ll still be sure to be picky about my choices;-;
Again, very much like dating...
hey im extremely new to dnd how would i be able to find a session or group to introduce me to dnd?
that demo didnt help much, im still just as lost
Usually best idea
What specific questions do you have?
We're happy to answer any beginner questions you have! We can also point you in the direction of additional learning resources if you need them.
Watch the "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos that linked above.
i was just wondering if it was possible to have like a 1 on 1 tutorial session about being DM or something, im more of physical learner rather than a reader
ill give it a watch
Unfortunately this server gets hundreds of newcomers all the time. It's simply unsustainable to give tutorials to everyone who is looking for individual help. Thankfully, there's tons of resources that can explain things, and we're here to answer any questions when you get stuck on a set of rules.
We've all been new to D&D at some point, so I'm sure you can succeed!
ah, thx dosh
If you want advice on DMing then head on over to #dm-discussion
Hey, so I'm a bit iffy to like, join a group, does anyone have any motivational words 😦
D&D is a game of rules and regrettably you can't avoid reading the rules, especially as a DM.
If you want to play D&D then you need to look. Noone but yourself can find a group for you.
if you can guide me then im more than welcoming
Just like with meeting new people, it's all about being open with what you're looking for! You might not find the right group immediately, but with enough time and effort you'll fall into the perfect group for you!
Thanks ❤️

does anyone know how to play D$D online when ur friends are far apart
you can do it over discord actually they have a bot rolling for all the dice and if you want to see like a screen you can all look at i could tell you a good website for it
yes like I want to know the website , also is using the set mandotary or u can use a website to play it
An easy way is Owlbear Rodeo (a VTT with all the tools free to use and extensions to add more features), Discord voice chat, and DNDBeyond character sheets
?tag new online
owlbear rodeo is what my group uses so i agree with that
2.0 is insane, especially with the 2.1 update. Honestly, it's much better than DNDBeyond maps tool currently - and you don't need an expensive subscription to be allowed to run it!
what class is better for fighting monk or druid there my 2 favourites
if you're asking about PVP, the game kinda falls apart at that
ok whats more fun to play
@faint crag
Barbarians pretty fun
If you’re a new player, fighter will be a softer landing as it puts fewer demands on the played than druid
Doesnt meant it’s impossible to be a new player and use Druid but there will be many more decisions to make

Hello all! I am extremely new to dnd and so is my group. I offered to be the first DM and I already made a campaign and have been watching as many videos as possible to prepare. Is there any advice someone could give me?
run a premade adventure
Yes! I am already doing that!
Are you looking for DM advice or something else?
Dm advice and other advice would be much appreciated! Anything works really!

Okay, thx.
Hello All,
It has been like more than 15 years that I haven't played DnD, and now almost now to mid 30's I would like to come back at it. To be fair I haven't played a lot of sessions in general, more like around 10 I would say so I know about the character creation etc and the books. I have played various rpg games in computer as well so I don't have problem with the mechanics. My question is How do i even get back it, preferrably like online session with others for the start and maybe later I can convince some of inner circle from family and friends to play as well.
Regarding online though, Is there a board game app with maps etc and rules are online to even start?Even search some beginner parties again? I am willing to buy the physical copies as well, I remember doing that as a gift to one of my cousins to play with this friends.
Any help/link can be appreciated.

Welcome! If the last time you played was 15 years ago, then you probably played a different edition of the game. The current edition is 5e, and that came out in 2014. The rules are going to be completely different from back then, so keep that in mind if you are relying on your memories or assumptions from that edition.
To get started with 5e, the Basic Rules are completely free. You can find a link to them in the bot post above ⬆️
The website that link will bring you to is D&D Beyond, which is officially owned by the makers of D&D. You can access the basic rules for free there, but you can also use that site to purchase online versions of all of the books, and keep track of their contents in an easily searchable database. It also has a character creation tool to help walk you through that process, and to create a digital character sheet.
If you want to play online, there are a lot of resources for that. Typically, groups will use sites like Discord for voice or text chat while playing, and then a “virtual table top” (VTT) to represent the game map in combat. These are typically 2D maps with grid lines, and tokens to represent the players and monsters. Though, there are various different types of VTTs. What one a group uses (if any) will fully depend on that group’s preferences, so that’s something to ask about before joining a game.
Does that answer everything so far? If you have any further questions, we’re more that happy to help!
What are some cool things I can do with thieves tools as a rogue? I'm not that creative haha
Mechanically, they're used to open locks and disarm traps
Anything outside of that will have to be something you come up with alongside your DM
Oki might not be something I'd invest too much into then
I'm going more of the assassin route than the thief
Hi uhn im new never played dnd ever and i need someone thats willing to sscrifice some time to explain to me how it works
Anyone experienced in playing grung able to help me in a lil while in character creation? I wanna make a grung monk

Unfortunately this server gets so many new players that it's a bit unrealistic for us to have one on one rules learning sessions. Thankfully, all the basic rules are completely free and linked above!
There's also plenty of resources available, like the Handbooker Helper video series also linked above, which goes through specific rules. And if you've got any questions, you're more than welcome to ask them here!
hey, i am here to learn how to play DnD!
Check the links above.
I feel like that'd be good for being an assassin too, don't want to alert your target
hey so I'm a new player is it rude to stop and talk to the party about like a plan? and if I do would I like conceal it from the DM so they can't counter it or what
You can always talk to the party about a plan. Don't conceal stuff from the DM, their job isn't to counter the players, they actually work with the players to make stuff happen
oh alright thank you
Don't think of the DM as a bad guy. They are there to make a story you want to tell, not to stop you or kill your characters.
A good DM isn't a "DM vs players" DM. A good DM wants their players to succeed but give their characters a challenge.
totally agree
hello new to the dnd universe had my first game today at my local pub ❤️
Welcome ! If you need help let us know
This set of tools includes a small file, a set of lockpicks, a small mirror mounted on a metal handle, a set of narrow-bladed scissors, and a pair of pliers so outside of the mechanical checks you can do on locks and traps, any creative use of those tools might be on the table depending on the DM.
The mirror can be used for looking under loose fitting doors or around corners, for example.
Hi I’m new can can someone msg me and give me help on how to start

Ya welcome !
Hi I want to ask for some tips and opinions on how a low wisdom high int ( a bit crazy) character is usually played and maybe some interesting example of it?
An absent minded professer who is well versed in his field of study but lacks common sense when dealing with every day things. He has low willpower and can't resist snacking.
low willpower how does that work?
Hey hey
High intelligence means a person has a deep understand of lore, history, and practical facts about the world.
Low wisdom means a person lacks an understanding of people and isn't very observant of their world around them
Famous characters in media that represent this archetype would be things like Rick Sanchez from Rick & Morty, or Donatello from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Willpower is more typically represented by Charisma, not Wisdom, imo
It would be very easy to lie to and trick someone who has low wisdom
I've been going off of Wisdom is willpower from the previous editions' definition of wisdom.
3.5E's definition of Wisdom is:
Wisdom describes a character’s willpower, common sense, perception, and intuition. While Intelligence represents one’s ability to analyze information, Wisdom is more related to being in tune with and aware of one’s surroundings. An “absentminded professor” has low Wisdom and high Intelligence.
A lot of the Wisdom saving throws are against mental/psychic attacks.
part of Charisma is "force of personality," which has some overlap with willpower, but I largely agree
oh her charisma is also high but I guess her willpower could be random
I consider “metal fortitude” and “willpower” to be 2 different things, personally
3.5E and 4E squished it all down to Fortitude, Willpower, and Reflex saving throws...
can you say more about this?
In D&D, if a spell or other effect is trying to control someone’s mind, that is a wisdom saving throw. So how high your wisdom is determines how well you can resist someone trying to control you. I consider that to be mental fortitude. Willpower, and the force of your own sense of self and personality, are represented by your charisma. If a spell is trying to teleport someone against their will, or banish them to a different plane of existence, you have to make a Charisma saving throw against that. Charisma is also the ability that’s used whenever you want to make a skill check that influences other people to do what you want, such as persuasion or deception. That’s why I see it as a representation of willpower
oooh okay that makes sense thankyou!
There’s a channel devoted to #character-discussion if you want more in-depth feedback on potential ideas. To see all the channels available, visit id:customize.
Gives into temptation easily, even when it might not be the best idea.
"Another cup of tea, professor? And a slice of cake?"
"Well, I really must get back to my research, this demon won't banish itself. But you can't save the world on an empty stomach..."
oh thanks ill def keep that in mind

@spare escarp remember to have fun
Hello, I’m new to dnd, and rolled 4d6 for my ability scores each. One of these rolls, I rolled four natural ones and don’t know what score I should put it in, as all my other scores were also mediocre.
You roll a 4d6 and ignore the lowest die.
Yes, I did, and all four of them rolled a one
This was my second time rolling for my six times
That's very low chance of getting four 1s...
Anyway, if you don't have a DM yet I don't recommend you rolling your ability scores but instead use either Standard Array or Point Buy systems.
And now you have learned by experience why there's also Standard Array and Point Buy methods for generating your character stats.
Most DMs want to witness their players rolling their ability scores to avoid cheating.
My DM insists on me using the scores I rolled, but next time I meet him, I’ll try to persuade him into letting me roll again
So I’m trying to find out what score I should put the three total in
I’m playing rogue if that helps
A 3 is pretty awful, but I tend to dump Strength most often since it has the fewest mechanical benefits overall.
One of my paladins has a 6 Dex and I played her as a big klutz (luckily she wears heavy armour).
I do get a +2 in strength because I am a Dragonborn
But I’m leaning toward putting it in either strength or constitution
I’d recommend against using it for Con.
ultra squishy
Generally not recommended
Ok, good to know
So is it smart to put it in strength then? All of my weapons have finesse
Maybe intelligence if you want to play an extremely not intelligent rogue who can't help but get into problems
Int would be funny
I heard that if you have such low intelligence, you would also have a hard time speaking
From an older player who hasn’t played in a while
Unless your DM is a punishing and more antagonistic DM, no. That's more of a concept from previous editions of D&D.
But I'd still talk to the DM about it because a score that low is highly likely to cause issues in the game.
I will try to find a way to make it work or to roll again
This is my first campaign by the way
Hey can anyone teach me character sheets pls
I can try to help
Three of six of my PCs at my table have 8 Str. You can roleplay your PC's weakness as much as their strengths.
Good idea! I’ll try to put that in mind
What do you need help with?
Pretty much everything I’ve never done one
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

i was about to link the same, thanks
- Have fun and relax
- Take notes.
- Don't see/treat your DM as a "DM vs player"
- Know your class (and spells if any). The more you know about the rules of the game the more it helps you DM because they're already busy as it is.
- You don't need to do voices/accents when you roleplay.
what class?
Rogue
I think the thief
k
id go str or int then
if your dm runs encumbrance rules, or you want to jump, go int
if your dm may be strict abt major impacts for 3 int, go str
the real move is to dump Con, so you can hopefully roll up a character with better stats fairly soon 😆
Yeah, I’m deciding between the two
youll literally be oneshot by most attacks
oh yeah, idk why I thought 2.
I know, it’s a hard decision
but yeah int or str
But In my party, there’s an op paladin just waiting to demolish everything in our path.
2 16s
Lowest 11
Is there a place to play your first time online or is it better to find a local in person session?
you can have a look for groups using #looking-for-players
Thanks!
Is it enough to buy the dnd books through d&dbeyond or do people recommend the physical books?
It depends on your needs and/or budget. Right now D&D Beyond has a cyber sale (Cyber Monday is usually around $19 for most books).
I bought both physical and digital because I like to keep physical copies (I own physical books from older editons) since digital last only as long as the company has the servers around (with digital books you are more leasing than actually buying them).
I am a fairly experienced but I am teaching two new players. one wants to play a ranger (drakewarden) and I'm undecided which ranger class to have her play because she is a newcomer. Tasha's or handbook? And to make things more complicated I also made a homebrew ranger rework that I'm very proud of. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1y1XNfJO9m0ET0aP0U4C0y3s7CF-pYh3mjDnnNkneTn8/edit?usp=sharing
I should also mention that I'm the dm in this case.
Use the Tasha’s features are they are all better than the PHB one
Drakewarden can be tricky bc its an additional creature to control, but if they’re down to make sure to track its stats and abiltiies then go for it
Swarmkeeper is also a fun favorful class
hello... im still learning and i have a question about the Great Weapons Master feat. For the -5 attack-= 10 damage, are the choosing to do so before or after you roll?
"Before you make a melee attack" So before you roll
ok thank you... helps if i clearly read the thing first lol (my bad)
I was wondering if there was any dnd campaigns needing a new player? We’ll I’m still semi new to dnd and I would like to join a campaign if anyone is alright on having me join eheh

(Im sorry if this question has been asked a bajillion times)
?tag new online
Oh sweet
Neat
Hello! I'm a newbie to the server, you can call me Champ! Nice to meet you all ^^ I just wanted to try popping in to meet some new people to talk dnd with, would this be the right channel for that?
This is less a channel for discussion and more clarifications on how to get started with the game. Maybe #dnd-discussion best suits what you’re after?
Perfect, thank you! I'm still new to discord groups too ^^; I appreciate you pushing me in the right direction ^^
So I was rolling for stats for a character (that I'm never going to use, just learning the software) and Im wondering if it's possible to get a negative bonus while rolling for stats. Also, I dont really understand how the 4d4s and the numbers that end up coming out work. Is it the number I rolled plus my race or class bonus? Thanks
It’s 4d6 btw
And yeah you can have a negative modifier
The way it works is you roll 4d6, keep the highest three rolls and add them together, then repeat another 5 times to get 6 numbers
Then assign them to stats how you wish, and add your racial stat bonuses
Ty. I just realized as I got -1 on Intel and wisdom. That's gonna be a fun one to play
You should be able to allocate the numbers between whatever stats you want
And you are not required to role play exactly as your stats
Hi
Hi I’m new
Hey there
Hey Y’all

Handbook Helper, there.
Alright, thank you. I really need to do my homework to get into dnd 😭
so true
a DM sheeshhhh
no one else wanted to be the DM
it's between me and my friends (who are all beginners btw)
(including me)
Bro i hope you find some
i have to read 180 pages of the basic rules before i can go ahead and ask the right questions 😢
Stuff takes Time
Thats normal
Just bear in mind critical Role isnt the Standard dnd
oh yeah ofc not
Even tho we got some Talented fellas in here
Critical Role also homebrews some rules so…at some point you do need to actually sit down and check out the rules yourself
This is a game with rules at the end of the day
Hey
if anyone wants to talk about dnd or possibly learn with me please dm me, i just want someone to talk to about creative directions with characters, campaign stuff, and all sorts of things. i’m trying to get into virtual dnd too
Hey, I'm just wondering if its expected or really necessary to fully read the rules as a new player? I don't plan on DM'ing until I get a few games to get a gauge of how it feels
I know the answer is ultimately "it depends", but I'm trying to know if its widely accepted for a new player to not want to go through the rules and let their DM show them the ropes as the situations come
I'd say at least read the basic rules to know how to create a character and what to do in most situations.
Of course, you may find a DM who's willing to explain everything to you, but anything they don't need to explain is a load off their shoulders
As long as you know how your character abilities work and how to roll for attacks and stuff you should be fine to play
That's a good way to put it. I guess learning my own character's class progression and how to properly apply stats onto a sheet would be a good start? I've made a general sheet with someone I know that is very much into DnD, but I didn't really get proficiencies n stuff.
Yeah, there's also a lot of good yt videos about how to go filling the basic character sheet.
That's, I think, the bare minimum to start playing.
Of course, most DMs will ease you into it, giving you hints on how to do certain stuff
And incase the sheet looks intimidating/complicated, you can always work on a "cheat sheet" (with or without your DM) with your basic abilities/attacks and infos about your PG, so you don't have to look at a tax report everytime you wanna search for something
cheat sheet I have these printed off to give to new players so they have a quick guide of what to do
Oh thanks. Also cool, I didn't know you could put links into text like that
Discord magic
newer feature
That's pretty sick, I'll go read through the cheat sheet now 🙏
Small thing before reading that
House rules means it's not something that's in the official rules (i.e. critical hits doing max damage, in the rules it just says to roll every damage die twice)
Right, in the really brief campaign I played within, it was immediately established that nat1 and nat20 were not going to be by the rules and instead an epic/disastrous moment
I assume a lot of people play with at least a slight amount of house rules? At least regarding to nat1/20's?
Oh, huh, fair enough then
Critical successes is far more common to have at a table than critical fumbles
