it was purely physical for multiple decades
this is the offical server for dnd lol
so it means, it looks different, but it serves the same purpose as a spear?
:(
yep
Ur saying there’s absolutely no other website that lets u make a dnd character
there are no other digital character creation websites from my knowledge
There are some but they only offer the basic rules/srd content
the first chapter of the basic rules explains it
Go though the basic rules and copy the info onto your sheet
Can I find those online
yeah theyre free
Can I add magic to it? Basically it belonged to a family member and it holds some sort of power but my character doesnt know what it is or how to activate it yet
linked in the pinned messages
generally no, magic items are normally rewards given out in game
however, you could talk to your dm, especially if the magic isnt known about at the start
you normally have to stick to your class's starting equipment
Definitely something to talk to the DM about. It might be that the item initially doesn't do anything, but then you unlock the power
"Equipment
(a) chain mail or (b) leather, longbow, and 20 arrows
(a) a martial weapon and a shield or (b) two martial weapons
(a) a light crossbow and 20 bolts or (b) two handaxes
(a) a dungeoneer's pack or (b) an explorer's pack" heres the starting equipment for a fighter
they dont normally get a spear, however talk to your dm. im sure most would be happy to exchange line 3 for a spear
So i cant like have starting weapons based on my story? but i can talk to my dm about it?
Yeah, talk to your DM. I see no reason why you can't swap out some weapons and starting items, so long as it doesn't give you a mechanical advantage
were you going with an artificer?
So you don’t understand the rules but are going to make a class that needs to follow the rules??
For new players, I wouldn't really recommend that class
What are you struggling with?
yeah artificer is quite complicated for a new player
yeah I kinda figured
Yeah I was tryna remake my old character
I found her original sheet but it’s so unfinished cuz I had no clue how it worked
ah, I see
trust me, it definitely wont
You can always come back to the character concept when you have more experience
Yeah ig
or change them up to fit a different class
I’ve only ever actually been in one session so idrk how to like do anything with it
Wouldn’t work tbh
oh btw, my pc's personality is that he loves animals, but i just realized isnt that like a druid thing?
There's nothing wrong with starting fresh, then
Whats the concept
You can love animals and not be a druid
I love animals, and I'm not a vet
But can I tame them? I mean i could probably could, but just making sure
Spontaneous engineer who solves her problems through wacky contraptions
The entire like concept of artificier as a class is so silly to me
there arent any rules for taming creatures, but you can still make animal handling checks for interacting with animals
Rangers have their whole animal companion thing going on, so you could multiclass a little
in 5e there is an animal handling perk
but I wouldn't recommend multiclassing to a new player
or maybe just be a ranger if you want
its like nature-y fighter
absolutely no need to if you dont want, but a beastmaster ranger could really work loving animals into your character
or you could go with an oath of the ancients paladin. They're big on loving natural beauty and animals
@fresh fable
Uh...hi...I've never played dnd before..I was wondering if wizard is good for newbies...
Or sorcerer...
Sorcerer or wizard could work, reflavour some of your spells as contraptions
magic in general isn't super complicated, but it's something extra that you have to wrap your head around. Generally, I wouldn't recommend magic users to new players, but if you're only interested in throwing spells, then it's not impossible to understand
Maybe idrk how I’d do that tho
Ohhh, okay. Thank you
you could try paladin they use magic but have more health
good to know
the trait is really dependent on how you dm would use it though
so every dm plays their game differently and ive had some the use that trait to pacify and other for taming animal
Okay, thank you
yeah, it's up to your DM. You'll just have to have a discussion with them regarding taming animals
i see, alright then
anyways, i rly wanna get into the experience at some point haha, i feel like i rly need the experience cuz asking questions is kinda boring HAHA
haven't played many "good" paladins i would suggest an oathbreaker paladin out of bias
i wouldnt, thats a death trap past level 7
also very dm dependent
bc its not meant to be a standard player option
I just wouldn't recommend an oathbreaker paladin to a new player
I was sort of thinking sorcerer since I'm more keen on magic..for subclasses, maybe clockwork soul? That's based on what I've read off the internet...
aight thanks for the help, i rly hope i can like join some peeps here at some point
clockwork soul is a good option, but dont feel pressured into a choice based on what youve read of good options
Ah, alright
powergaming is a bore, imo. just go with what you think is cool, and what works with your idea of your character
some people find enjoyment in it
That's true. I suppose I've just had rough experiences with powergames that take it a little far
potentially
note that most people's idea of a character is "competent" - very few people want their character to be a bumbling idiot who can't do anything
it's quite hard to build powerful characters
and most games are quite straightforward
play whatever you think is fun and fits your character concept, but don't be a burden on the group or limit yourself to only the 'powerful' options
most groups fall somewhere in between those two extremes
very well put
Is “the fiend” the only warlock entity or can I just make one up
theres a difference between the specific creature that gives you your powers, and the pact itself
the pact is a set of mechanical features
there are a number, the fiend is just the freely available one
no, as its a set of mechanical features
you can make up what your patron is, the specific creature
As long as it's some kind of Fiend giving the Fiend subclass benefits to the warlock
probably talk to your DM about what you want the entity to be
to make sure that it fits into the world smoothly
I’m not in any campaign rn I’m just making a character
are there different kinds of pacts? The site never listed any
there are. Check the PHB
What is that
yes, there are more pacts. but you gotta pay for them
Oh
Player's Handbook
D&D is definitely on the significantly more expensive side of p2w
however, D&D is not the only tabletop roleplaying game out there
there is no p2w in dnd. you cant win a game of dnd
you may also be able to get a friend who already owns the books to show them to you, physically
I was joking
or check the system reference document on DND Beyond. That should have all the info you need
also, there is are lots of options to share stuff. on DDB, you can share books you own with a subscription. At the table, you can lend each other the books
D&D can be an expensive hobby, but it doesnt have to be.
I was just gonna try finding a campaign online
I don’t have anyone to play it irl with
Important note, it's not called the system reference document on D&D Beyond
It's called the Basic Rules
However, note that literally everyone outside of DDB calls it the SRD, usually using the acronym
is it not? That's what I've always known it as
Oh ok I can jsut have a pet dragon that’s cool
List of available warlock pacts Published in several books and each can be purchased individually for 1.99
• Archfey
• Celestial
• Fathomless
• Fiend
• The Genie
• Great Old One
• Hexblade
• Undead
• Undying
This is not correct, what D&D Beyond offers is not the SRD
The SRD and Basic Rules are two different things
The SRD is a games design document and not intended to be used to play the game
The Basic Rules are a player/DM readable copy of the rules with limited options
D&D Beyond combines them both into a complete Basic Rules document that is player/DM readable
that must be what I was referring to, then
For newcomers, the Basic Rules is where you should start, not the SRD
That depends on the dm
Drakewarden ranger
Sup y'all, I'm new to d&d. Can anyone tell me how I can learn the basics of d&d?
I’d start by checking the useful messages/links in the pinned messages found in #dnd-newcomers
This is #dnd-newcomers
Oof! Well then! lol
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Tysm! Have a great day!
I just made my first ever Dnd character and I'm over joyed but so overwhelmed I could passout
Just wait until you play your first D&D game! It’s so much fun (but also can be exhausting).
Hullo, I want to get into DND but just reading the "basics" seems daunting, is there any other way to learn or should I just read and try to remember??
I know the Handbooker Helper series is pretty good for learning specific rules, also linked above. Additionally, you could watch a live play session - plenty of folks both famous and indie on YouTube stream their games so you can watch along and get a feeling for the rules.
In the end, it's a game with a lot of nuance! You'll have to do some reading eventually.
Yeah thought so, so......much........reading
Thanks mate 😁
hi

im completely new to dnd

hi
Don’t worry mo I’m also very new
bye
hiii
With DND beyond will I have access to the DMs content for creating a character? Or will I need to purchase the content and make a character prior?
Your DM can share digital books if they have the Master Tier subscription.
If they have the content sharing, you can only create characters with those books in the campaign you're in with that particular DM.
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
its amazing how so many people want 18+ people lol
Do not share your exact age - it’s against server rules
it’s a safe guarding issue and they have topics in their games not suitable for under18 people
As someone who's an adult who's old enough to have grandchildren I would feel uncomfortable playing with Internet strangers who are minors for various reasons.
uh ok
ok whats a good starting class for dnd?
The martials (fighter, barbarian, and rogue) have the fewest mechanics, so they are among the least involved. But you can learn anything with enough support and patience.
would you happen to know a group looking for an extra member?
We have #find-a-game for searches.
thanks
hi anyone intrested in a dnd online game, it would be my first game

Someone set up a roll20 game for me to see how the character sheets work more or less it was pretty cool
Do You Know How To Find People To Play With. This Is The Only Reason I Joined This App
And Then What
You wait
Also please don't capitalise every word, it makes it harder for other people to read what you've wrote
whats the mostt difficult part of being a dm
Do you work on a character before or after you find a dm
You can create a character to practice to get to know the features of the class you're interested in playing but when you find a DM expect them to ask you to create a new character that would fit their campaign.
Probably better to ask in #dm-discussion
ok
Personally I think you should do a combo, you could begin working on a character and know what you want as a basic idea then wait to make some of the more specific things after you have a DM and know what they plan to do with the game.
For instance, know what class you are interested in as well as race and the characters personality plus an idea for a backstory but make the full background/backstory after you have met the DM. This is so you can know if they are using a module or doing a homebrew world and if they are doing a homebrew world, waiting will allow you to make your backstory around their world and fit into that world somewhere.
Thanks
I'd echo OldMan: know the process for making a character by going through it. I'd suggest having multiple character concepts, though, so that they can be tweaked to fit the specific setting/game/party. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, basically.
not overworking yourself
I needing help on creating a character, would like to either use clockwork soul or aberrant mind sorcerer?
If you'd like help creating a character, #character-discussion is the channel to post that in
What are superiority dices used for? I read the book more than once and i cant find anything about it
they are used for battle master maneuvers.
have you read the rules for the battle master subclass?
Maneuvers. You learn three maneuvers of your choice, which are detailed under “Maneuvers” below. Many maneuvers enhance an attack in some way. You can use only one maneuver per attack.
so at level 3, a battle master fighter knows 3 maneuvers and has 4 superiority dice per rest
you expend one die when you use one maneuver
You will find more information in the Battlemaster subclass section of fighter
Yeah but it doesn't say i have to use the dices for my maneuvers
That's what confused me
the text of any individual maneuver says you expend a die
Hello
hey
I was just wondering if you guys knew any things to watch about dnd
like, to learn about the rules, to learn how to DM, or just to see how the games is played?
or just entertainment?
Like to see how the game is played I guess, I haven’t really gotten the grasp of the whole thing
you could try to watch a live play show like Critical Role, Dimension 20 or High Rollers
Ok, thnx!
also basic content creators on yt can help to give you a feeling for the game
There’s a channel on YouTube called XP to level 3 who do skits about how to play the different classes
Chad detected
Thank you
Also oneshotquesters,Runesmith, and ginni di i can recommend
all of em good content creators
My boyfriend and a couple of his friends are really into DND and have played a couple times so I thought I’d learn a bit about it
Always welcome people here are chatty and willing to help
I’ve watched a bit of critical role probably their 3rd campaign and it seems pretty cool
Hey I’m sorta new to dnd and joined my high schools DND club and I’m now making a character and would like some advice and pointers if that wouldn’t bother anyone

Ah ok Ty!
So, I’m looking to try and run my first ever campaign and learn to DM. Any tips and tricks to start?
We have a great channel where you can poke the brains of fellow DMs - #dm-discussion
Okay awesome, Thankyou!
Being a DM is just another way to play D&D and can be tons of fun!
Yeah! I’ve got a world in mind and the basis of how I want the long game to play out but I’ve no idea where to start haha
whats a good way to find groups to join
have you checked out our #looking-for-players area? there are also local game stores - if they are in your area they sometimes host games. Roll20 and reddit also have looking for group features 🙂
looking for in-person or online games?
probably online unless I find a local group back in wisconsin
hello and welcome! so, this server does not host games, but there are #looking-for-players channels where DMs will post about their table availability. If you want to post as a player looking for a DM, please read the instructions in #find-a-game
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Thank you
Then Jayn has offered the best advice you'll get
If you do end up looking for in-person I'd recommend checking in with local libraries, meetup.com events, facebook pages and gamestores
hey i'm curious if this is etiquette or preference. should i wait until i'm in a session to pick a character race and class, or should i have one ready before joining a session? i've read the basic rules, but i have no in game experience.
it can be a fun creative exercise to make a character, but I always advise people to not be too attached to the concept as you never know what a table will allow (such as what level you'll start at, if you have any magical items (most often starting characters do NOT), certain races or subclasses may not be permitted, etc). So you can totally have one in mind, just be prepared to shift things and try not to add additional items that a character doesn't normally start with 🙂
Like Jayn said, you never know whether or not your character really fits into the world the DM is planning. When it comes to the mechanics, you also don't know whether they want everyone to roll for stats, use a point buy system, etc etc
on top of that, some DMs just prefer being able to supervise character creation in a session 0, just to make sure no mistakes are made
When I was going to join a campaign that was about 6 months out from being ready. I created basic outlines of a couple characters tht appealed to me. Then as things solified to get started I was able to choose which one made the most sense and then fleshed it out.
so all in all have a loose idea that you like, be familiar with the setting the DM creates, and if those things clash be open to changing them.
yeah what im hearing is make like 2 rigid characters and if they fit use them, if they dont be open to making one on the spot
yeah, that sounds about right
thanks for all the help 😇
hi
👋
Hi guys, i am doing a DnD tiefling druid and i need to place my score values in Roll20, what is the limit total of score i can get ?
Has your DM said how your ability scores are going to be determined in that game? Standard array, point buy, rolled?
i am planing a dnd campain and the game master is also a newbie so i dont know what will be the diference in each, what would be the recomended for a starting dnd game ?
ask your DM basically
ability scores range from 1 to 30
1 being absolutely feeble, and 30 being what the aspect of a god or a world-shaking entity has
and 10 being what the average joe (a commoner) has. As an adventurer, your scores can go up to 20.
To determine what your scores would be, you need to determine that with your DM basically, what method to use, any alterations to it, or any multiple chances.
The main options are standard array, point buy, and rolling
This section of the basic rules talks a bit about determining ability scores - they will end up different for every race/character because they will want them in different abilities.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
If your DM wants Standard Array - then every character gets 15,14,13,12,10,8 to slot into the six abilities. After that, racial bonuses are applied to give your character their total ability score at level 1.
There is also a point buy system and rolling for stats.. but you can look those up or ask the DM.
we decided that we want to personalise at maximun so we will use the point buy, but if another person decides to use the standard array for their characters does if afect anything ?
Standard array and point buy both work out even.
True, the last time i played i joined an existing group and started at lvl 6
Hello everyone! I had a quick question. (so sorry if this isn’t where I should’ve asked) my friends and I are waiting to start a new dnd session. Does anyone one know any good map designing sites/apps (Preferably free)
Other than it's self evidently twice as cool as one sword, how do you go about building a badass dual wielding character?
Like I'm thinking two daggers assassin type schtick, but I'm open to suggestions.
We need to distinguish between merely holding two weapons and actually using them mechanically
Anyone can hold 2 one handed weapons
If that character has extra attacks, they can even swing once with each of them
Im here for it Sensei. Hellp me build a Drizzt.
But the specific mechanic of Two Weapon Fighting is:
Two-Weapon Fighting
When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you’re holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you’re holding in the other hand. You don’t add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative.
If either weapon has the thrown property, you can throw the weapon, instead of making a melee attack with it.
Im with you so far.
The PHB and basic rules have a table with all the normal weapons and all their properties
As long as it has the light feature u can wield one with each hand and attack with your “other” hand as a bonus action, as described above
Note you do not get a damage modifier on that bonus attack when using this rule
In practical terms, the best you’re gonna do is two short swords (d6)
Also note there are no class or race restrictions so anyone, in theory, can use this feature
So far so good?
I would personally go for a fighter, so you can get the two weapon fighting style
Or a ranger
is there anything major i should know abt dnd? im not to sure how to play. the most i know is that u do action, sometimes u have abilites, and dice roll.
You should look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
is there like
a video? Im not to good at reading lines of words for more than 5 minutes 😭
I get distracted quite quickly.
nothing as in depth as the rules themselves, but there are videos on youtube that are a bit more concise and fast paced
the hour it takes to read the rules thoroughly is worth it though. it helps with the immersion
Dnd sessions can take hours during which there are periods you are listening to others
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.

DND is a lot of reading to know what you can do
okay
i wouldnt be intimidated by it, just read it at your own pace and you'll get it
I have a question then, would a multi class like wizard+cleric make me like.. a healer?
well, not really
cleric alone is a good enough healer, especially with the Life domain
Cleric can do “healing” just fine on their own
-
if you’re new, pretend multiclassing doesnt exist. Its for down the line
-
many classes have access to healing spells or abilities
-
no class is purely a “healer”, including cleric, due to how the game is designed
mixing it with Wizard doesn't really net you anything worthwhile
For healing at least
then for my stat thing. for someone who's fast and smart (if possible) what should i use my points on?
Hey new DM here how many rare items should my players get in a hard campaign
Well, intelligence for being smart, however there’s no stat for being fast
Dexterity is the closest, but it doesn’t actually increase your speed
All of these things are answered in the basic rules, it would be more helpful to go through them first then ask questions
I'm a DM in training :p
Also, it’s generally better to base your stats on what’s good for your class, than just purely for roleplay
You can rp your character however you want, your stats don’t dictate that
Probably ask in #dm-discussion
Is there a place for that in the server?
No specific new dm channel, but probably ask for dming advice in #dm-discussion
Okay
what class?
I already ended up doing it a while ago
but which one
When starting a character, what are some creation pitfalls to avoid , for overthinking it or to not be caught of guard alot?
Don’t overwrite your backstory
Don’t give yourself magic items
Keep in mind your class when picking stats
Don't dump CON
Don’t expect class fantasy to directly equal mechanics
Thank you, I'm learning a little list of what to check off for when i finish and start
Does that mean i should research all the dlc in order to create a workable backstory?
dont get hung up on the alignment system
no, just what the DM needs to be able to work with. Just work with your DM to make a backstory.
on the mechanical side a background is really just 2 skills and 2 tools or languages
if you dont find a fitting one for your character
A guy at the LGS told me that Fighter only looks boring because at first glance it appears simple. Thoughts?
Fighter as a class is boring.
As with any character, and to no greater extent than any other class, you can make it less boring, through flavour, backstory, and the passion you demonstrate by roleplaying it at the table.
However, it is a very simple class, probably the simplest in the game, and many players who enjoy having options will find that fighter often doesn't have tools for the situation, or that it only has one, relatively boring option - the Attack action.
I would like to play Dungeons and Dragons but i don't have friends that are interested. What do you suggest
Play online with internet people
I have played games based on it but not tabletop
How do i play online with internet people
You can use #find-a-game here to find a group

IRL or online?
online
#find-a-game has the details for the looking for channels here
btw do u know where i can post looking for dm
follow the instructions in #find-a-game
Is there any tags or descriptive element in the find a game posts that I can look out for for beginners?
Some folks will mention ‘beginners,’ ‘newcomers,’ or ‘newbies’ specifically, but they may be open to new folks despite not mentioning it explicitly. You can always ask!
I have a question!!!! 🙋🏻♀️ can a DM also run a character? Or is it strictly DM-ing?
What you're referring to is called a DMPC. It's usually recommended not to run one, and just to stick to being the DM. Think of it like this: it would be kind of weird to do an escape room with the person who made the escape room, pretending that they didn't know what to do, right?
Gotcha! And yea makes sense
Or it’d be like the referee playing on one of the teams.
Remember that the DM already plays everyone (NPCs and monsters) who's not a PC.
Although it's fine to have a NPC with the party in the small-s sidekick role. Baggage handler, local guide, that sort of thing. When I have allied NPCs in combat I usually let my players know they'll look after themselves first, but respond to orders or suggestions that aren't blatantly suicidal.
How do people generally play there DnD games online? Is it through DnD Beyond, Twitch, a combination of platforms? I am wondering if I can join a game as a kind of "spectator" to learn from others as they play.
?tag new online
You can find tons of games on YouTube and Twitch, live and video on demand, just to see how play proceeds. Discord and virtual tabletops like Roll20 are common, but I don’t think there’s a single approach.
Thank you very much 🙂

Where would I go to ask questions about something? Its about races and class
What’s do you want to know?
@deft prairie We have several channels, where you should ask depends on what you want to ask
#dnd-rules for how the rules work
#character-discussion for how to make a character or develop a character idea
#dm-discussion for running the game or #dm-world-building for making a world to run the game in
It all depends on your question
Well, If the race is a Drow Half-Elf and the Class is Sorcerer, which attribute should I put the most toward?
Like S,D,C,I,W,C
Oh ok
Thank you
Charisma then con then dex, if you look at the sorcerer txt it should say what your primary stat should be
@deft prairie You want #character-discussion
I haven't played a game yet but when I do what do I need besides dice
As a player? A character sheet, general knowledge of the rules. Note-taking implements optional but highly recommended.
I've been interested in dnd for a couple of years now but never found a group, listened to several podcasts and would like to believe I have a basic understanding of the rules, what's the best way to find a group to play with? Would love to dm at some point in the future but would like to get more accustomed to the game before putting the big boy pants on
We have #find-a-game as one spot to begin your search.
I also wrote this guide of other avenues to find folks both online and offline: #third-party message
Thank you!
I'm less than 5 hours away from my first tabletop game and I'm like little kid excited.
Ironically it feels like back in school when you got invited to a party and were nervous because you wanted the cool kids to invite you back.
😈
Any last minute etiquette tips or advice for being a good newcomer? I've studied the basic rules and pretty much read the players manual front to back.
I'm also bringing beer and pizza, because my momma raised me right 😜
- Take notes.
- Thank the DM. Sincerely, even if it didn't go great. It's still work.
- Pay attention. To everybody, not just the DM.
- Try to be active. Folks who do things, ask questions, etc. make the game run well.
- Know how your stuff works and try not to take too long on your turn.
- Try to give other folks the chance to shine. Ask questions about their characters. Compliment them if they do something cool or have a good idea (out of character if in-character isn't appropriate). Be a fan of the party.
- Know when to keep quiet. It can be easy to let enthusiasm overwhelm you (I'm prone to this).
These are maybe obvious, but maybe something in there isn't already on your radar.
Thank you for taking the time to put that together.
Also: if you established safety tools and boundaries, respect the ones folks have shared and respect yours as well. If the game is pressing up against some real discomfort for you, speak up about it.
I didn't know these were a thing, but it makes sense. That's actually good to know.
There's a saying in the community: No D&D is better than bad D&D. So if the game isn't right for you, don't feel like you have to put up with it just because finding a game is tough. There are lots of players and games out there, so find one where everyone at the table is more or less on the same page in terms of wants and expectations.
I genuinely hope it goes well, though.
I personally like stories related to social classes
Like nobles and commoners
My only stipulation was that I didn't want to play "find the magic necklace" or some variation there of. Apparently we're gonna overthrow a tyrant king, so that sounds rad.
Overthrow a tyrant king, that's kinda a social class story?
That's why I thought you'd be interested.
I'm a teacher, so of course anything that even rhymes with real history has me interested.

I have only just started d&d at school with friends and I'm confused
Hey I’m new how do I play and is anyone willing to let me in a game
hello, the bot above has a lot of useful link that help you learn how the game works
#find-a-game is where to start your search for other players.
Is it hard to initially get started and is your character and race and stufff very important or can i customie it to my liking?
Your character is very important since that is who you're playing. You can customize your as much as you want within the scope of the game rules and your DM's setting.
Read the free Basic Rules (linked above).
Shower first, ask about allergies re: snacks
thank you 🙂
Why are elves the coolest and why do some people pick "not elves"?
Why is it that I can't add my homebrew subraces under my homebrew race even tho I've clicked that it would have subraces?
Ask in #ddb-support perhaps?
Hi! Do you have any tips on how to do different voices for a fresh DM?

oh, cool. A fellow wizard. Out of curiosity, what made you want to play DnD?
I saw it on stranger things and then on that movie that came out while ago and that got me hooked
hahah same buddy! I also love wizards and everything about them and i knew, that DnD is the place for me to play a wizard, the way, i've always wanted to and imagined, i would.
I also, saw BG3 and was amazed by it and decided to play baldur's gate 1-2 before i start BG3 and that hyped me up even more for DnD, i must admit. I have yet to play my first campaign, but rn im learning everything there is to learn about DnD. I feel like, with DnD, your own Knowledge of the game makes the game possible in the first place, unlike other games, where you can go in blind and discover the game as you go, bc the mechanics are done by the engine itself. In DnD you have to know what Advantage and Disadvantage does. Or how to apply your stat bonuses, etc. unless you have a good DM who can take care of that for you.
Yeah that’s why I am worried I don’t know how to play exactly and i don’t have any friends that want to play dnd so I am kinda lost right now
Don't worry. I got you
@crystal forge
- Go through the introductory demo to get a feel of how things typically play out in DnD
- Read the Basic Rules for as much as you like. - don't force yourself to get through it in one day like i tried at first -
- Watch the Handbooker Helper Series
- My personal addition, which im doing atm: Check out Bill Alans videoseries called: DnD with High School Students. It really takes alot of the anxiety away and you see how kids treat the game and how they would play and stuff. (late teens, not children btw.)
- Now, maybe, you can try your hand at making your own character. Feel free to send it in here: #character-discussion message
- and then just watch a couple other campaigns, vids directed towards DM's, vids directed towards players, tips, etc. to just throw yourself into the world of DnD
Finally, all you have to do is, find a game. It's up to you, if you wanna play with friends or strangers, physically or digitally. There is plenty of tools to play digitally, but im not sure.
Thank you this is going to be a big help
Again, i haven't personally played a campaign yet, but i feel much more confident about DnD and what it is and tbh. now i understand it's still just a table-top game, where you roll the dice and it pleases that hidden away gambling addiction, most ppl have lol
It's totally not like others have portrayed it in media.
No problem man 🙂

How do I get some players to do an online dnd campaign with ?
But I’m not gonna be dm
Look in #find-a-game
In what area do I ask those
Read the instructions in #find-a-game
I don’t see any of the # that they are showing tho
Like I can do that but where do I see that

I would recommend heading over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
This channel is for new players to D&D.
oh ok
Is someone able to evaluate the character idea I have so far and tell me if it’s even following the rules or not
sure
how do i like, (for dnd beyond) get a campaigned link or smth, like is there a thing for just random players to join or smth??, cuz idk how to like do any of this stuff 😭
Dnd beyond doesnt host games; dnd isnt like a video game where you just drop in
The DnD beyond app itself is for two things: a digital library for books and a digital character sheet for building and tracking a character on game
oh damn
This server does not host games either. It is discussion of various dnd related topics
my bad man i didn't know
If you are new, refer to the pinned messages in this channel for various collections of resources
alright thank you

I am pretty new to D&D, I am trying host my first ever session/campaign for my friends who have never played before. I have two pre-made campagins: "Lost Mines of Phandelver" and "Dragon's of Icespire Peak". Which one is better for new players?
icespire peak is the newest one, so maybe go for it
Alright, thanks.
have a look at the bot post a few messages up
hello does anyone know where to get live maps with grid? so i can put them on a tv table ?
have a look at the bot post a few messages up, where you can find resources to get started with dnd
what is dnd friend making me play
to put it simply, its a tabletop roleplaying game set in a high fantasy world
for more info, have a look at the resources here
Yo this thing I'm reading says my character gets 1d10 every level for damage, does that mean ar level 6 I get like 6d10
what are you reading?
what have you googeld to get this?
maybe it was a homebrew thing cuz my aquaintance sends me a mixture of stuff sometimes, I can't usually keep track of where I get it from that well
Idk I'm pretty sure I saw it in an actual thing tho
probably have a look at the official basic rules, linked in the pinned messages
yeah no it does say 1d10 per fighter level
your weapon, mainly
+ proficiency (level) + modificator attribut (depends on weapon)
you dont add proficiency to damage
ah, yes, sorry, that was attack
also proficiency isnt your level
its determined by your level, but it isnt equal to your level
about how much should i know before jumping into a game?
know the basics of how dnd runs, and how to make character
then once youve made a character for the game, make sure you know what said character can do
do you think i need to know what exactly every stat does? or is that pretty easy to look up mid game
like have a sheet just to glance at
there's only six ability scores at base, if that's what you mean
it's easy to look it up and your dm will tell you what you need to role an when to use wich stat 🙂 don't worry
you think i should rock like a fighter at first since spells seem kinda complicated?
any of the four martials (monk, rogue, barbarian, fighter) will be a lot easier to start with
or is there a class that uses mostly melee with the option to use magic. i know fighter is boring
its totally possible to start with a spellcaster tho
ranger fits that
or you could still be a fighter, and go for the eldritch knight subclass
There is this fun comic about the stats and what there are for: https://www.facebook.com/dndmemes/photos/a.746604425403060/1803865013010324/?type=3
didnt know there were subclasses lol
why do you think it's boring?
ty ill check it out
ive just heard that its largely hit guy with sword or whatever
theyre called martial archetypes for fighter, you get them at 3rd level
you dont have to be in melee as a fighter btw you can also pick up a bow or something
it can be
oh no way
you can even have both
Finesse fighter, dump STR, take DEX and CHA, load up with social skills. Be a duelist! Champion of courtiers and queens.
you are more than a simple class, you have skills, background, tools and items at hand and can be creative with what you do
this helps
if you are stuff with nothing more than attacking, nobody have show you all the options you have we a character
i guess i still dont fully grasp the scope of how in depth a character can be
Never forget to take rope with you.
you can shove, grapple, help others, throw alchemist fire onto a foe, team up with other chars for advantage, work with items and a lot more
i feel like i need to take a quiz to make sure im ready lol
and subclasses will bring even more options to the table
no, don't worry 😄 and don't fret on your first choices
I have played succesfully with people that only learnt 5 min before that DnD even exist
i guess i just need to find a dm thats noob friendly
the most part you could freely tell what you want to do - only one rule: think what YOU could do, not your char - every char can do everything that you as a person could do
most think its fun to help others get into the hobby
gotchas
most dms will be, even if they dont outright state it
and your DM's role is to tell you: ok, you try to climb that tree? yes, you could try, give me an atlethics check
ive seen a video of people playing part of a campaign so i kinda have a feel for the gameplay
It's a conversation where you tell a story together and sometimes roll dice.
You don't even know much about the world. You can ask everything, like "What do my char know about this?"
- Vincent Baker (2010)
"I'm not sure what would be appropriate in this situation, what would be normal in this world?"
such a smart way to put it lol
It's not your role to have studied the lore and workarounds in the world you are playing in. And it's NOT bad roleplay to don't know what the world inside your DMs head might be like. It's always good to ask and get to know the ropes. That's part of the fun. 😄
"Hey, DM, I'm not sure how the religion of my cleric will see it. Is it good or bad to kill that undead animal that is friendly to everyone? It seems to be innocent."
(Example out of one of my newbie campaigns)
And don't be afraid to ask even in combat "I'm not sure what to do, what are my options?"
gotcha
i know theres a lfg channel but do yall know of any dms specifically that are beginner friendly
as i said here, you dont need to look for a specifically beginner friendly dm
very true
hi, im new to dnd and im not sure where to even start, i dont have any irl friends interested in dnd so itd be rlly nice if someone could teach me the ropes
🙂 You can find a bot post with the most important links in the pinned messages
And there is this cool text adventure like Intro that you can play while learning about the game: https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
thank you 💙
hellu, I'm too new to d&d and I would like to know where I read the rules for the game and rules for character making.

@ornate kiln thank you. ☺️
One-shot is like a one-game (or at least limited sessions) adventure
@mossy vault read this, and check out the Pinned Rules
like go here, do this, done?
often, D&D games go over multiple sessions, sometimes they last for years.
a one shot is a small story, usually limited to one session of the game
A one-shot differs from a campaign, in which the plot runs across several sessions
Really depends on how the adventure is set up but it's generally focussed on being short, not more than a game session or two to complete.
Usually people make new characters for a one-shot
They can but only with DM permission.
probably with the same DM?
Yes. Usually though each campaign is unique and folks create new characters for them.
Very rarely
You can get a DM that will let you do it, but culturally it's uncommon and frowned upon
it depends, its not the ususal way at many casual tables, but there are exceptions:
Adventurers league is "official play" and has you take your character from game to game, magic items and all.
"Westmarches" is a style if play that often allows you to do that too, but its restricted to one community where everyone agreed to run things this way
gotcha
what is dnd beyond .-.
its a website that allows you access the books digitally, make and manage characters, and run games with some tools like an encounter builder
are the books like stories or rule books and guides?
both, sperated in sourcebooks and adventures
some books are for rules/options, some are prewritten adventures that a DM can run for their party
some contain a bit of both
oh cool. i should probably check them out huh
is it normal or regular for someone to make a gc for all the dnd stuff
can anyone help with my patron spells? im a lvl 1 warlock and idk which ones can i take from the list
1st Detect Evil and Good Sanctuary Thunderwave Burning Hands Fog Cloud
2nd Phantasmal Force Spike Growth Gust of Wind Scorching Ray Blur
3rd Create Food and Water Meld into Stone Wind Wall Fireball Sleet Storm
4th Phantasmal Killer Stone Shape Greater Invisibility Fire Shield Control Water
5th Creation Wall of Stone Seeming Flame Strike Cone of Cold
9th Wish — — — —
im a bit clueless in terms of the warlock spell system
Where did this list come from?
looks like they typed out the subclass lists from the Genie patron
dnd 5e
Ahhhh, genie. That explains why there’s so many.
yeeeeaaah
If you look at The Warlock Table, it says a 1st-level warlock knows two spells and has level 1 spell slots.
The expanded spell list from your patron lets you choose from those spells in addition to the ones on the normal warlock spell list.
In the case of The Genie, you can only choose from the column that corresponds to your chosen genie kind.
okay so i can choose only 1 from the patron or?
What’s your genie kind?
so i assume i can get only one patron spell at 1st level,my genie is air so
So you can choose any two 1st-level warlock spells you like. For your character, Detect Good and Evil (from the Genie Spells column) and Thunderwave (from the Djinni column) are also available to choose from.
You can choose one or both or neither of those.
thank you lots
But you can’t cast them at all unless you take them as one of your known spells.
i can have 2 spells and 2 cantrips, does that mean that i cant learn a patron spell
You can
or is it just a bonus
You can learn it as one of your two spells.
(Or learn them both as both of your two spells.)
thank you.
you have no idea i was clueless
You can know two warlock spells (separate to cantrips)
The expanded spells says they also count as warlock spells for you, meaning you can choose to learn them, or not, like any other warlock spell
my brain is dying at the simplest things
Or you can skip them entirely for other spells on the warlock spell list.
dnd beyond doesnt seem to have pact spells so ig i add them in pdf of my sheet lol
eldrich blast is staying 🗣 ,it seems very strong
What?
Detect Evil and Good is in the Basic Rules. Everyone should be able to access it.
basically
oh yeah ill check it out again
Same with Thunderwave.
When you’re choosing your warlock spells, you should also see those two spells in the list to choose from.
You can choose them or not, but you only get to pick two in total.
i cant see the thunderwave, even when i search it in the bar
Make sure you're not filtering for only cantrips
Have you selected your subclass? It obviously won’t show up if you are doing your spells before selecting your subclass. And don’t forget you also have to select what element you want your genie patron to be.
Oh.
istg my iq is dropping
I’m glad we got it figured out
Also I don't think it has a selection for which kind of genie you're in a pact with
So just be aware of which bonus spells your subclass choice won't actually allow
i mean it says add another class
There is a drop down box for genie kind
Oh nice
That’s the button for multiclassing
but where are the genie
No, look in the blue highlighted box saying otherworldly patron
ok gimme a sec
OHHHH
THANK YOU!!!!!!
Thats your subclass
you all are so patient
thank you thank you thank you
oof wait. fiend is the only option
:,)
Ah, that means you haven’t purchased the subclass or sourcebook through D&D Beyond
that is sad
The fiend patron is the only one that’s available for free, because that is the one that’s included in the basic rules
this is a private campaign with the boys so uh maybe i can just write it down on the actual pdf version of the sheet :D.
well in other cases i need to rewrite my whole lore
thank you dnd beyond
If you have the sourcebook irl, and just want to have your character sheet in D&D beyond, there are a few options still
?books
Does that command not work for everyone?
?books
im currently reading everything online,we are DnD ing online sadly
i dont have any book irl
Ah. Well, pdf/printed character sheets could still be an option for you then I suppose
yep ill just paste in my patron spell and abilities and boom
?books
There are five ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full book from the marketplace
- Purchase individual elements from the marketplace (options can be found within the book description)
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from dndstore.wizards.com
- Join a campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
What's the game being played on, r20? Foundry?
we use the uhhh
owlbear
we work with what we have
Ah gotcha
heyy, does somebody know how to text in the looking for a dm chanel? Appearently we dont have permission to do so and even if we would, we have no idea what to write in the message >:(
Check #find-a-game for instructions.
Hello! Im a newb, starting my first game tomorrow, but creating my char today. Paladin, trying to understand everything at once. I'd like to play (from roleplaying perspective) a flail or a mace, but i keep reading bad stuff about them, although i have no idea why.
For instance, flail, warhammer, morningstar and battleaxe all have 1d8 damage, how can one be better than the other?
well warhammer and battleaxe have versatile which the others dont have
but honestly iwouldnt worry about it a lot if youre a beginner
Looks like i'll be the only tank in the party, so i'll be playing sword&board
I decided to go CHA>STR>CON>WIS>INT, so if i understand correctly, that will enable me more damage from smites and such on top of my physical damage
well charisma i quite important for paladins for t heir supportive abilites but it doesnt affect divine smite
ah, so no damage ability bases on paladin charisma then?
thats not true theres abilities based on charisma
for example the devotion paladins sacred weapon feature
flail is fine. dont worry about it.
Charisma is more important later on for Paladins than it is at low levels.
it also helps their spellcasting which might deal damage
try to start with at least 16 in both CHA and STR and you are good
That’s what a paladins smite abilities are for
^
Spend a spell slot and add extra damage on your melee weapon attack
you got Plate armor but no weapon?
No weapon yet, deciding what to take.. morningstar/flail/other
Im not even sure about the stat distribution, as not sure what will scale better down the line
just saying Plate is not starting equipment.
DM might refuse me that then, ill wear what rags will be allowed then 🙂
yeah talk to your DM. the standard is chain mail
We were told no magic items and such, so i landed on plate... i figured its 1500gp tho, so i expect taht might be refused
i'd need to change the race than.. would that be better off down the line then? What does Smite scale with?
divine smite only scales with your spell level. its not dependent on CHA. some spells are dependend on the stat, but not all of them
are you allowed to change your racial ability scores (custom origin from Tasha's) or do you guys only use the Players handbook?
We were told to use what we have available from Beyond
Changed them up a bit, so i have str and cha now at 16, +3 modifier
thanks for the tips ^^
is there any extentions other then beyond and beyond 20 to play through beyond?
or is there more
or a better way
Hi guys... I wanted to ask for build advice
I'm joining a Lv1-15 campaign and I made a Wizard Tiefling (subrace not selected yet) and I want to build a wizard that can buff friends, debuff enemies, and control the battlefield.
What subclass would be good for the gameplay I want and would there be any good guide I can take a look at for this?
If this is your first character, general caution that wizard is a steep learning curve that will demand a time investment to study
it won't be my first character. and let me repost this in #character-discussion
It'll be my first time playing a wizard tho
When choosing ability scores in d&d beyond, what method of choosing ability scores should I use? There's standard array, rolled, and point buy.
That is something you would ask your DM
usually your DM will tell you which to use. if you are making a character without a DM yet, I would chose between point buy or Standard array for now and adjust when necessary
The DM decides what method or methods you use
Ok. Thank you!
Halo! I would like to ask about Catfolk flexibility
Are all of their flexibility the same as ordinary cats?
catfolk? thats not an official race option in this game
The closest race to “CatFolk” is the official, playable race of tabaxi
Their abilities are those in their race description
How “flexible” they are would depend what you’re trying to do and how your DM interprets it.
So if Catfolks can be the same as Ordinary Cats
Does that mean, They can be also Liquid as cats do?
Dnd isnt a reality simulator, the rules dont account for every possible situation
Some cats can get in to a small gap with their liquid body
if you want to squeeze into a space it would depend on the size of the space
There are rules that generally cover movement
Tabaxi aren't cats though. They may have feline-like appearances and traits but they're still not cats.
But there is no game mechanic for “being like an ordinary cat”
If you want to play a Tabaxi and role play in a cat like manner thats up to you
Is that a yes or no?? Cuz i kinda like to have my character like that, it can be used on some kind of situation
I feel like you are asking questions about homebrew stuff, and since we arent familiar with that, we can't really make any definitive answers
Awttsss– Sorry bout that– i was just being too curious on my catfolk character
Ask your DM is the default answer then since the rules don't cover it.
generally though, you can look at the game features we know. Anything else is up to you and your DM
Okay okay, Thank q!
Hey so im new, just made a character sheet in dnd beyond and now im stuck
I have a tiefling wizard with brains and smarts thats good at decieving investigating and insight, whatever that is, what next?
or #find-a-game
Thank u
how do i find a game quickly
maybe paid games or be lucky. sometimes it can take some time to find a game
Or check the #looking-for-community channels for other Discord servers that may be running games
with no game experience, should i be looking for games that advertise "beginner friendly" or should reach out to everyone and ask them myself?
No harm in asking if it's unspecified 👍
Hello, I'm new here and I'm making my first campaign as a DM any tips?
Head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
dont overwork yourself
Will try but no promises
A good tip.
meet your players at where they are at

And also work with your players, being open clear, and communiative at all points; it's a collabrative effort all around, so being on the same page from session 0 is always going to yield the best results.
Thanks a lot🛐

Start by giving the free basic rules a skim through, maybe watch some folks play D&D on a lieplay steram on YouTube/Twitch. Try your hand at creating a character sheet (see free basic rules). Then find a group and start playing!
I heard wotc made MTG supplements for DnD, is that true? Could i play in theros?
You can
They also released some monsters from Eldraine
hey 👋
sup
how r u?
Good
Hello, I am brand new to D&D. My wife and I are looking to start playing and getting our daughter started as well for a family adventure and help continue imagination, creativity, and problem solving. We stumbled upon D&D at Target and picked up the starter kit.
Any advice on what we are needing to do and how to get started as none of us had played before.
ok so im looking for someone to dm for a session with me and my friends, but its not very traditional at all... how would i go about actually hiring someone for that just posting it in #750812887697588356 ?
This is my first day on the Discord channel. I am looking forward to sharing adventures, ideas and experiences. I am almost to the end of Dragons of StormWreck Isle with two groups I run. The "noob" group is far more creative than the FAR MORE experienced one. I am so happy about that.
HELP, how do i make a post on #looking-for-players
In terms of actual steps, it’s really just read the rules, build some characters, ask here with any questions. I suggest watching some actual play videos on youribe just to get a feel for the flow, understanding that “real” games arent as “produced”
Bigger picture, dnd is about the experience of telling a story and having fun interacting as a table - not winning or losing as one might in a sport or video game
I think the first rule of dnd is to understand that winning is when everyone has fun, even if all your characters dont accomplish the mission. The story and the experience is the point. It should help build community
Search the server for ‘dm tips.’ This question gets asked often, so running that search will net you plenty of responses.
You’re probably unlikely to find a dm you can hire for a specific game idea
sad
Maybe try looking through the paid DMs on a site like StartPlaying?
ok thank you, ill check it out
Are there any good youtube suggestions
And thanks for the response
This is the first of a four-part series on the 2014 starter set adventure. It’s not especially polished, but I think it gives a decent idea of a general table vibe compared with the professional shows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgNRe76o4_8
Critical role and dimension 20 are probably the ones with highest production values
Yes yes confused on how I find a group tho
Like one that will want a noob
I know there’s a channel for finding a group
?looking

Hi one of my friends introduced me to DnD and I have some dice for it

If you'd like I can help if you want to DM me

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above
nothing to start with
Really?
if you think youre gonna keep going with dnd, the players handbook is a good next step
Yes, if you're looking to actually buy a book and commit, Players Handbook has the most/best information
okay, anything else?
Im a bit irresponsible and like spending my money away, so feel free to suggest a "buy-this-and-you-have-everything" List lol
k, just for playing i would go phb -> tcoe -> xgte
im not good with abbreviations
The free Basic Rules is like a video game demo so you can try it before you buy it.
what's tco and xgte?
tcoe = tashas cauldron of everything
xgte = xanathars guide to everything
Yeah, im at it. I haven't yet read everything
Oh, so player's bundle basically?
What about that bundle containing monsters and so on?
thats for the dm
On roll20 i saw, they don't sell the 3 book bundle anymore but instead something different. Forgot the name
If you have no interest in DMing (most players don't) then don't bother with the Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG) and the Monster Manual (MM).
So, if i wanna play a smart know-it-all wiz, you would still suggest i don't need those, right?
You don't need it.
I might DM for irl purposes, but atm, i only have 1 friend who'd be interested.
yep
Okay, thanks
dmg you dont need, mm you just shouldnt get at all as that would kinda be cheating
Reading monster statblocks and acting on that knowledge is metagaming and generally bad form.
I recommend you play as a player first to get the feel and rules of the game first. DMing takes more commit of time and money.
mm?
Monster Manual
monster manual
Yeah
Gotcha
Okay, good to know 🙂 I kinda do this in Baldur's Gate 1? Where i use the player Manual almost as sort of an in-game rp tool, where my character is supposed to have that knowledge, but i agree. I guess in DnD it's kinda different
I could still do skill checks with the DM to get certain info, probably, right?
up to your dm
Exactly. “Does my character know…?”
but yeah probably
The answer may be “no,” but going about it that way is better than, as mentioned above, essentially cheating.
Okay thanks everyone!
As a DM if I suspect a player is "cheating" by looking up monster statblocks I will give them a warning offline.
I really hope to be able to play some time soon, since im getting more and more impatient now haha I've been informing myself and preparing myself and so on, but now i really wanna play
I found a bunch of campaigns, i requested to join, but im kinda... sad? Bc there is one Dm i really want to play with and i applied, but there are like 40 applications on his page and by reading through them, i kinda doubt, i'll be the one, to be taken 😅
but let's hope, eh?
yeah
The upside is there’s plenty of other games out there.
Check #find-a-game . There are games all around the world.

Hello could someone guide me through the character sheet? im halfway done with some help but hes away so i need to do it myself
what part of it?
ac initiative and speed
Speed is determined by your race
Initiative bonus is normally just your Dex mod
Ac is determined by your armour, mainly
what number should i put on it or is it up to me where i decide by a roll point buy etc
with 4d6
It is normally 30, for most races
what about human?
It’s 30
what about initiative? whats a dex mod
Dexterity modifier
I would recommend giving the first few chapters of the basic rules a read
allright for saving throws how many do i choose
where do i find that
Your class determines your saving throw proficiencies

What is the best way to find groups that play during my timezone/find Australian groups to join?
Check #find-a-game
When finding a game, what's the specifics of community games, paid games and other services. I'm not entirely sure what each of the terms mean and I can't find the meanings online.
community is like, a server that hosts games or a Westmarch (one single DND game with multiple characters generally in a 'hub', and multiple DMs each able to run short adventures)
paid is paid, of course
Hello! I just started DND and I’m still trying to figure out of to put my stats for the monk I’m making.
QUICK BUILD
You can make a monk quickly by following these suggestions. First, make Dexterity your highest ability score, followed by Wisdom. Second, choose the hermit background.
"QUICK BUILD
You can make a monk quickly by following these suggestions. First, make Dexterity your highest ability score, followed by Wisdom." (then constitution should be your next highest)
Jinx, lol
hello!
Oooo alright, how do I determine how much stat points he has in total?
You need to know from your DM if your group will go with roled stats, point buy or the array of stats first.
what does "community game" specifically mean
three methods:
Standard Array (15 14 13 12 10 8), or Point Buy (which can replicate SA, be 15 15 15 8 8 8, or anything in between)
or Rolled (roll 4d6, eliminate the lowest die, and record the total. do this a total of 6 times.)
For a simple draft of a character start with the array and change it as your DM will tell you. ^^
@violet dragon
Hey is there any miniatures that work alongside the starter set? I saw some online but there were multiple sets so I wasn't sure which one works with the current starter set
my friends are all holding off their campaigns and they barely play so its like i make characters for nothing so i shall be looking for an adventure
#find-a-game might help along 🙂
thank you :D
There isn't a specific set of minis for the starter set. You can go with whatever you like and seems affordable?
If you are looking for official miniatures for dnd this might help: https://dnd.wizards.com/miniatures
Thanks!
Ah alright, thank yall very much!
'Im a DM with two groups. We are about to complete starter adventures, mini-campaigns. That said, there will be an option to re-roll characters to start Curse of Stahd and start in the LVL 1 area OR keep the lvl 3s and enter Barovia directly.
DMs out there, do you impose limits on how players roll their ability scores via the point-buy system or do you allow them to roll for in their own time until they get 18-18-17-16-15-13?
Anyone know what mat to get if I am going to get the starter set
Are you talking about a physical battlemap?
Yeah
I have no idea about WOTC products, but it looks like the maps are available. You could print them on paper. You'd need to get the grid to come out at 1" intervals.
This would be a question better suited to #dm-discussion (as you were told in #ddb-support )
Thanks I will look into that
Whats the highest Number for hit points
So are grid maps the same size or can they be small/massive?
the can have very different sizes
Gotcha, do the books give some idea on how big a map is then?
they should show you the map, so that you could count tiles on the grid
Thanks a lot
if you have a map with only grid on it to write on with markers, don't worry to much
you can trace the needed parts of bigger maps onto your tablemap and don't need the whole map and erase it to map out the next part if needed
Hi, new player here. It will be my first time playing D&D. Do u recommend Dragons of Stormwreck Isle Starter Set
Or Starter set 5th edi? Will play it with my friends and we all are new to the game.
I understand Stormwreck is a decent introductory adventure. Never done it myself, but I'm old.
I am relatively new
With eldrich blast, and chill touch, I'm confused by something, it says +4 ATK on my roll20 sheet that I quickly made to see where everything goes, but not sure where these numbers come from? Theres also +3 for dagger?
welcome to all the new peeps in here
Thank you
I’m going to say you have a charisma of 14/15 which would give you a +2 and spell attack is charisma mod plus proficiency
to hit an attack you are proficient with (like your spell attacks or daggers), you add your ability modifier plus your proficiency bonus.
I'm a new dm here and decided it would be fine to take 7 players into a campaign which is supposed to be for 4-5. Someone teach me how to scale the difficulty up so it's decently challenge Instead of them massacring everything in 1 round pls.🥹
you could use the D&D beyond encounter builder for some quick and dirty adjustments.
put the prewritten encounters with their original amount of players (5) into the builder and take a note of the difficulty.
then put the same encounter against the new amount of players (7) and add creatures or replace them with more powerful ones till you get to the same difficulty.
not perfect but should get you into the right ballpark
Anyone wanna share their un-knowledge in a game?
Dm if interested
Tq🥲
Ah okay! thank you, that clears it up
Just another question, would it be more interesting/fun/challenging to fight a dmg adult dragon or a healthy young dragon?
Substituting higher CR monsters can help but also consider the following
- increase or max out HP within the recommended range so more party members get to act before it dies
- Choose creatures with legendary actions to help with action economy.
- Use the environment - melee fighters are taking the monsters down quickly? Consider obstacles to closing distance, or more mobile enemies, etc.
- Use bosses that have actions that work at a distance while minions prevent players from closing quickly
Also - glass cannons. It's ok if monsters go down quickly if they hit HARD first - scares the players more.
If a healthy young dragon would be a fair challenge for a party, then a damaged adult one will become a very dangerous and unpredictable encounter. It might roll low on Initiative and never take a turn or it might down half the party before they can even act on a better roll.
though generally, for a big party, having multiple monsters and legendary actions is pretty important
can i flirt the dragon
Also - #dm-discussion would probably get you lots of advice. This is probably beyond "newcomer" territory.
Oh ok
up to your DM
I am a newcomer though🥹
same
I would say yes
i have no idea how to make a character shee
sheet
I use the premade ones
coolio
I prefer being a dm compared to player. The characters making part just confused me
I'm not a mod so take it with a grain of salt - just thought it might overwhelm the "where do I even start" people.
