Yea dav I get that
It's Davyd, and let's move on
I just want more help or examples to understand
Oh, well you should have clarified that
Julie is saying I am arguing. I am not. I am asking questions
Your question was "Why doesn't my DM do skill checks?"
Literally no one other than your DM can answer that question
I did after and others did
Some guards ask you your business. You tell them you’re delivering an important package that doesn’t exist. That’d be a deception check in all likelihood.
And once again, moving on
That's true dav. Sorry my spellchecker doesn't like your name
Never Say your business
Thank you to those that helped. I guess I have to move on
Then that’s still lying.
Oh
But ultimately it’s up to the DM, and that can be helped by knowing a player’s intent.
Yeah true, it is
Is there a way to make a Goblin character on dnd beyond
Yep, goblin is an official race, but you’d need access to that race.
You need to buy it probably
Ok
Correct. You can buy it individually or the book that contains it. Or else someone with that content would have to share it with you.
It’s in eberron and one other
Incorrect. It’s in Monsters of the Multiverse and Volo’s Guide to Monsters, which is no longer available digitally.
You can’t purchase goblin from that book: https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/eberron-rising-from-the-last-war
I only say this so if the person wants to buy it singly, they can from the appropriate sources.
Purchasing that book will find you the goblin race option, you just cannot purchase it individually from that book
Thought it was just where goblin is generally
If you want to use dndbeyond character builder. You need to follow their rules
You can just use a sheet and grab stuff from around
If you’re new dnd is nice though
I’m just going to make it a gnome that thinks it’s a goblin
You could also just ask your dm to help you homebrew one
Just give it like, common and goblin for languages and then maybe some different stat bonuses
Ok
Hey guys what’s the site that you can use to digitally make your character sheet
D&D Beyond?
I think that’s the one thanks
That’s the best one
Or just, print one
actually those are the only two ways really xD
If ur psycho enough memorize ur charecter Info 🧠
That’s the chad move
Dm: “alright everyone, time to leve-“
Player: “done.”
Dm: “you haven’t even gotten out your-“
Player: “I said I was done.”
Hello Iam new to d&d never played it before would some1 be so kind to help me get strated Iam from the Nederlands

Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Thank u
Have you created a character yet?
Yep
Yep I just needs try it out now
Where would I put a dnd meme?
Not on this server -we don't allow memes
Oh alr!
What exactly is the “milestone” leveling up option
so that you level up without having to track xp its determined depending on the campaign youre playing and the idea is that instead of leveling up based on xp you level up whenever the dm feels like it
at a milestone for example
Yo,can anyone give me a personal review on my paladin for planescape iam new it will help aLOT
@hushed tusk please don't post the same question in multiple channels
Okie
Yo I’m kinda new to d&d and want to ask for some advice since me and some friends had started a campaign but never got to finish it so now after a while of not playing I want to come back to it.
What advice specifically are you after?
Hey yall, I came from 3rd edition, do you still need the "Shield proficiency" feat to use a shield?
Just the basics on like the meaning of things like for example I’ve heard people say they’re rolling for initiative and I’m just trying to figure out what all of them are
Have you read the Basic Rules?
I did read it but haven’t in a while
Nope
Shields can be wielded by anyone
I don’t even think you need proficiency in any armor
The rules linked in the pinned messages would be the best place to start. Folks are unlikely to have the time to walk you through info that is otherwise available, though we’re happy to help clarify confusions.
Give it another spin, it will answer all your questions
Ok thx
A feat is not needed, class/subclass gives it. But because 5e is significantly different you should check out the free basic rules

Yes they can but if you don’t have proficiency in them you cant cast spells and get other disadvantages
If you're wearing an armor do you need to write it in equipments?
Yes
I am so new to the game
Like i only played bg3 loved it and i am here and kinda looking for ppl to play with around my age preferably +21 and yea just have fun, so if u guys can tell where i might find that I'd appreciate it a lot
#find-a-game is where to start that search.
Have a look in #find-a-game. Also, don’t assume anything from bg3 applies here. It made a lot of changes.
Checking the pinned messages in this channel is also a good move—you’ll find some handy starting resources to acquaint you with the game.
find a game is confusing-
Are there any alternatives to DND beyond by any chance specifically for charecter building? Want to know what resources are available and if there are better, if it’s cheaper/free then that’s also a plus too or is DnD Beyond the best option if ur willing to pay
You can buy content on other platforms like roll20 but there are no other free options
Which part?
Damn nothing for just charecter sheets
idk, just a lil overwhelming for someone like me
Google sheets if you want to type them
Pretty tragic alternative ngl 😭
Dndbeyond gives you free basic rules and the option to buy individual items like races subclasses for 1.99
There’s the official PDFs. As mentioned, though, there are no official free character-building platforms.
Might buy it someday tho I’m not sure if I’m gonna do so yet since I just got started, guess I’ll look more into it tho
i want to try dnd but i feel kind of turned away by the fact you have to like roleplay and put on a voice pretending to be a character. Is this totally necessary or could i just type or something.
Tbh scared about that as well for my first session
Text-based roleplay is possible, and you can also just describe what your character does.
You can roleplay as much or as little as you’re comfortable with.
What can u do in a table top setting
i know this is a dnd discord so probably the wrong place but for me personally i just would find that cringey coming from my own mouth
If you don’t want to do voices, don’t.
like it seems so cool when others do it
would people let me join the game if i didnt use voice
Yes
Depends on the group.
If u want you can give ur charecter an accent or what I’m thinking of doing kinda like a mute charecter idk I’m embarrassed to voice act a bit
Do you mean in person? You might want to read up on the distinction between active and descriptive roleplay. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#Roleplaying
ahhh, i like the descriptive approach
The only real requirement for the game is that you’re able to communicate with your group.
also what way should i approach getting into this. Should i make a character and go from there or learn the rules first . like do i need to fully understand it all before i start a game
Mute approach kinda sounds like a challenge then tho may be intresting, I’m in an ASL club learning it so really considering it or is that gonna be difficult
You need to know at least the rules to make a character, which you should follow for practice.
Hi,I’m new to the server 👋
Mute characters are very difficult because the game relies heavily on communciation. You can clear that with the table, though. They may be open to it.
Something to discuss with your group. (If they don’t know ASL, for example, then that’s not a way you can communicate with them.)
I’ll leave it for a later session then, maybe when I’m more experienced
Are there any servers that give updates on one dnd?
You can check out #1026901431132885064.
Helloooo, im kinda new ish to dnd but I don’t have a way to play it anymore does anyone have a recomeded way to join a group where it won’t be awkard im kinda inexperienced and not very serious about anything
We have channels to connect with others also running games or wanting to play. Start with #find-a-game.
Oh thank you sorry for being in the wrong channel
All good. This is a common place for new folks to post.
Thanks, is their anyway I can link the updates to another server(follow) like I can for #al-news-updates and ect…
Yknow regarding my dnd journey I cant believe it's 533 days and I still can't get a campaign
I guess I'm gonna be the first player who's gonna be looking for a year to play my first dnd game..
Oh wait it's been a year
How many DMs have you spoken to?
#dnd-announcements covers that and more.
Reddit is like 12 or more discord I can't count and roll20 only like 5
But there isn’t one dedicated to the playtest.
Facebook does notjing-
Yeah scheduling can be rough
Yea.. I think I'm gonna be searching for Waaay longer
One option is to start your own group
Yea I tried that and i got no one that's interested
I feel like that one blade runner meme
Hey, so I'm still figuring out what to do and what race I want for my character, Dragonborn seems cool but it's stated to be rare one, could I be able to play as it?
hello!
hello
That’s up to the DM, but odds are good you could pick it since it’s an official PHB race.
im also new to the game and i haven't tried my first game yet

Player's Handbook
The Player’s Handbook, the core rulebook for the game.
hello
Oh okay thank you!!!
hi
finding a game is a paaain
Yes, because there are waaaaaaay more players than DMs.
okay, so i have never done anything reletad to dungeons and dragons other than wached a few videos here and there, and i would really like to ty it. i have an idea for a character and all xD
The pinned messages in the channel have info to get you started.
ooohh, i would like to hear it. Same goes here. I like watching Dimension 20 but I've heard Critical Role is also good
Heyo
I have a quick question, and idk if this question is fit for this channel so please redirect me if needed
Hello
trust me
its harder then you think
coming from someone who has been looking for too long
forever newbie
🙂 ?
hi
But what’s the difference between a Barbarian and a Fighter? And that of a Sorcerer, Warlock, and a Wizard?
Did you read the free Basic Rules yet?
The short answer is they’re different character archetypes and have different abilities and strengths.
I tried but my brain ended up getting confused and just need to be slapped in the face with simple words
I might be the same too ToT. It'd be really nice if there was a dm who'd be willing to work with new players but hardd to find
Sorcerers get their arcane power from natural skill
Wizards get their arcane power through study
Warlocks get their power from a pact with a supernatural being.
Barbarians are beefy brawlers fueled by their rage. They favor large, heavy weapons. Fighters are all-around martial types who can use any weapon with skill.
They also bonk a lot
Ooooh, ok thank you!
do you have to spend money cause iv talked to a friend and he'd said you need to buy books n stuff
The Basic Rules are free, but you won’t have access to all the available options. If you want those, yes, money is needed.
ok
yessir.. its impossible though yt videos make it look so easy
How do you find a campaign to join?
Read through #find-a-game.
Oh okay thx
yess that's so true
im making an zombie girl
oohh interesting. do you alr have a back story for her plotted? I'd love to hear it
That’s good #character-discussion material. This channel is focused on the basics of D&D.
Hey there, everybody! I am a fairly new player and an even newer DM. I was curious if anybody had any session prep notes or video suggestions or examples they could share with me. I decided to just directly into creating a homebrew campaign as I understand the basic basics enough. I just get overwhelmed with organization, and that need for some sort of ‘something’ to follow even though I know I don’t have to plan out the whole thing and it’s OK to just prep enough. I just wanna see what other peoples methods are so that I can create my own and be comfortable with whatever comes next. Hope that makes some sense. Regardless I’m appreciative of any advice far and wide
I recommend heading over to #dm-discussion to ask for DMing advice.
kinda never asked but im dming tommorow and wanted to know if i could make my own character some people said yes but some people said no im so confused
You're the DM. You shouldn't be playing a player character (PC) because you're already playing every NPC and monster that's not a PC.
A DMPC is frowned upon for many reasons, such as metaknowledge.
If there aren't enough players to fill the roles in a party use sidekick NPCs.
thanks for the info man
As a DM you will be running all the NPC’s
hey there! im very new (as i only know what the basic of what the classes are) and want to get into dnd more. If there are any other newcomers who want to start a campaign i would be down
Im down!! Played one campaign before but moved to a new state. Hoping to join an online campaign
I've never played so it would be a totally new experience for me
Its fun but need a group that's committed
Also cause we're both new we need a solid DM
true
We need one more person and a DM and we should be good to go. Just added you, let's try to make it happen.
umm wdym?
Hello!!
hi
um i need help how do i join a game
See #find-a-game to start your search.
i cant find anything other then the things
Can you restate where you’re having trouble?
where am i suposes to find games on there
You can either post in #750812887697588356 or contact the posters in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community.
If we can get two more people, one as DM, we should be good to go to figure out a campaign
The instructions are in #find-a-game.
Thats what i did last time 🤷🏻♂️
hi
dmac can i join?
I am not new to dnd but new to this server for #750812887697588356 is there a command to make an entery there seems the format is specific
hey r u guys still available?
hey reue, we haven't started a campaign yet but we'd love to have you
i just sent a friend request, we are still looking for a dm.
I want to join a game as well. :].
You begin typing the command in any channel (type /looking) and you’ll see the command pop up. Select the appropriate one.
k i can join am really new tho
okay i added you as well. Me and Dmac are pretty new (i havent ever played before either)
Dm or player! Though I’m new to dnd playing wise I can describe stuff well I think. It’s just making up a story essentially, right?
we just need a dm
awe players are full?
so far, we are at about 4, one possibly dm'ing, so you could join
is there a age req?
You should probably take this conversation to private messages.
oh ok
The channel is not for coordinating games.
thanks
Yes
I played one campaign before and theres a lot to being a DM. They do a lot of math.
Lets make it happen 🙌🏻
Really? My friend told me it’s only adding or subtracting to what the player rolled.
depending on their like bonuses disadvantages?(I’m not sure what to call it)
But I don’t mind the math to it :].
Idk, ive never done it. Cool, be our DM then!
The math is largely addition and subtraction, with few exceptions.
How do we get into a chat together? You guys do google meet or zoom?
dmac i dm you somthing
You guys should private message each other than chatting here about it.
that what am trying to do
Sorry! 😭😭
We should probably move to #dnd-discussion if anything
or the group chat that was made.
@minor gazelle may I message you
Hi people
how much time is 1 turn
The game doesn’t specify how long a turn is, but a round is six seconds. All the actions of that round are happening in that brief span.
Doing a one shot! lvl 8 first come first serve DM me!
Post in #looking-for-players rather than here.
DM me if you want to play
I have questions about druids spellcasting and learned spells, like can they learn new spells (i know this is typically a wizards purview) and are they ever able to change the spells prepared.
They know all druidic spells like clerics do.
So would that mean there is a list of spells (or better, what search terms stratify the spell list for druids) that druids can perform? And this was a question in a recent campaign, where I changed the prepared spells (leveled spells, not cantrips) and was told that's not how druids typically work, SO ... if that's the case, when can a druid change the spells that they can perform? I'm kinda thinking about the character sheets on DND Beyond.
AND - are there only specific cantrips that a druid can perform, or is it based on the cantrips you chose when you created the character, and that's it.
A level 1 druid knows all level 1 druid spells. They can prepare new spells during a long rest.
Cantrips are "locked in" though.
Ok. would the spell list on DND Beyond be a good resource for which spells? Would the character sheet automatically know which spells can be prepared?
Druid spell list:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spells#DruidSpells
LAST QUESTION: Of the 7 available cantrips a druid can perform, one is locked in to which ever cantrips they chose, and cannot perform all 7 cantrips?
also, if this was better for the dnd-rules thread, my bad. I am a newbomcer 🥲
A level 1 druid knows two cantrips. Once you pick them you are stuck with them.
The optional rule if the DM allows it is upon level up that you can swap cantrips.
THANK YOU @cobalt frigate !!!!

What’s the difference between wizard sorcerer and warlock and what are the advantages and disadvantages of each
Sorcerer's arcane powers are from themselves. Their spell list is limited.
Wizard's arcane powers are from study. They have the potential to learn all wizard spells.
Warlock's arcane powers are from a pact with a supernatural being. Their spell list is very limited.
Sorcerers can also manipulate the spells the cast in ways others can’t.
And warlocks have a lot of additional flexibility from invocations and their pact boon.
Ok got it thanks
Wizard’s big draw, as hinted above, is that they have access to the most spells.
Wizards also have the best ritual casting feature in the game.
So I’m looking for a magic caster that has a variety of spells but can also deal with combat in most scenarios
Which one would I choose
Any of them, although Warlock tends to cast the fewest spells and then rely on having the most powerful basic magic attack in the game.
I want a balance of spells and regular weapons so if I run out of spell slots i won’t be screwed
Between those three classes, a hexblade warlock with pact of the blade is probably the most common choice for weapon usage.
Your user icon shows the artificer class logo. That would be a way to achieve what you're looking for. There's also Bladesinger wizard or what Spam said.
A bladesinging or school of abjuration wizard could work as well, if you want more spells than the warlock would offer.
Then what’s the point of sorcerers
Very flexible casting. Not so keen on swords or armor.
So if you specifically want weapons, sorcerer's just not your best choice here.
I’ve never played a magic caster besides artificer so I’m guessing I’m basing my ideas of what I liked and didn’t like from that
Although as a charisma caster, Sorcerer multiclass quite easily with several other classes. Something for the future, maybe.
We didn't even touch on Bard. They have a couple sword subclasses.
What is bard even good for
What is the ability for level 1 sorcerer ?
High charisma and seduction
They're good at a bit of everything.
They're a full caster with some of the best support features in the game.
Does the instrument affect anything
It’s a spellcasting focus.
Or is it just for look
It can! Check out the instruments of the bard magical items.
But your type of instrument doesn’t have any additional effect.
Ok then
Ty
I'm making characters with my friends and we lost 😭
Lost… what?
Like confused
Btw, most casters rely on cantrips for when they run out of spell slots. The majority of casters aren’t good with weapons
Ah
I can't read all that because I have to sleep in like 2 minutes
And we don't have a DM
They get spellcasting and a feature from their subclass.
(Which also has to deal with us being new)
Can you explain spell slots
You expend a spell slot of the appropriate level when you cast a spell
Think of it as ammo
Oh ok
The higher level a spell, the bigger ammo it takes
Simple explanation is they’re a finite resource for each level, which to regain them, you need a short/long rest
I like thinking of it as dollars. 😛
So it's basically the cost for spells?
Yes
To explain more thoroughly:
When you want to cast a spell of 1st level or higher (so anything that isn't a Cantrip), you need to expend a spell slot.
The level of the spell slot you expend must be at minimum equal to the spell's level. So, for example, you can cast Burning Hands with a 1st or 2nd level spell slot, or any higher level, but you can only cast Scorching Ray using a 2nd level spell slot (or any higher level).
Everything
@hoary forge have fun and good luck
Thanks alot
Tyty
Where do you find dm though
We just finished our characters
I would send a link if I knew how
Oh thanks
If you'd like I could dm you @hoary forge
Sent
Ok
okay so im a b it silly, can anybody remind me how the stats and stuff work
like specifically the numbers, if you have a 12 in perception plus 2, how does that carry to the roles
perception is a skill- you dont have a specific number in it
okay so
wisdom is the relevant stat for perception
i havent played in 2 years i have a session tuesday
Do you mean if you roll a 12, and add your +2 that’s listed next to Perception?
im stupid, help
depending on what you have for each of the main 6 stats, that determines your modifier for that stat
so if you have a 10, then you have a modifier of 0 for that stat
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores, determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
?tag new skills
Skills
A skill represents a specific aspect of an ability score. Proficiency in a skill lets you add your proficiency bonus to ability checks that involve that skill, making you more likely to succeed.
- Strength. Athletics
- Dexterity. Acrobatics, Sleight of Hand, Stealth
- Constitution. (none)
- Intelligence. Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, Religion
- Wisdom. Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, Survival
- Charisma. Deception, Intimidation, Performance, Persuasion
Write your ability modifier next to each skill for that ability. If you’re proficient with that skill, add your proficiency bonus as well.
maybe have a read of the basic rules, linked in the pinned messages
If your DM asks for a Wisdom (Perception) check, you’d roll a d20 and add your wisdom modifier to the total. If you’re proficient in perception, you’d add your proficiency bonus as well.
I don't wanna interrupt you guys but I'm like new new to D&D I've watched a lot of it but never played. Anyways what is inspiration and what does it do?
i am a dm
Inspiration can be spent to gain advantage on an ability check, attack roll, or saving throw.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Inspiration
so this might be problematic for my party lol, also sorry about the mishap

inspiration is a token given by your dm as a reward for creative roleplaying, or some other things. if you have inspiration, you can spend it to gain advantage on an ability check, attack roll, or saving throw
you either have inspiration, or you dont- you cant have multiple inspiration at once
thank you guys!!
When you ask for a perception check, you’ll compare the player’s total to the Difficulty Class (DC).
If the total equals or exceeds the DC, the player succeeds.
There will be times when the game tells you what DC to use, and times you’ll just have to decide what to use.
As a simple rule of thumb, you can use 10 for an easy task, 15 for medium, and 20 for hard.
Hi, this is my first time ever touching anything related to DND. I just made a character on DND Beyond and I'm reading the rules. Is there anything I should check out or do? (I'm playing digitally and also wouldn't mind a beginner-friendly group.
once you have a basic handle on the rules, you can have a look for a group in #find-a-game
thank you!
my entire campaign is made by me, which probably isnt the best first plan, but its between me and a bunch of friends who understand that itll prob be bad at first.
thank you guys for helping, is there anything else i should generally know about checks? maybe anything about saving throws, but those prob wont be used yet
That’s honestly the best-case scenario—everyone being in the same page and committed to a good time regardless.
Ability checks and saving throws are resolved in the same way.
Hi, i enter to this world today and open de dnd beyond app, now i created a random character, so what now i do
It’s just a narrative difference.
Do you know the rules?
I dont khow
An ability check is trying to do something, and a saving throw is trying to avoid something.

Oh thanks
Give those a read if you haven’t already.
I've been looking everywhere in the rulebook and I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. What do you use to determine whether a spell hits, as opposed to a physical ranged attack? It can't just be armor class, can it?
Some of them list specific saving throws and stuff but others do not.
Usually it’s just ac
if you as a player are trying to attack another creature - it would be against that creature's Armor Class - which is something the DM would know
Or saving throws, if the spell specifies
For example:
firebolt is ac
Fireball is a saving throw
Okay, it seemed weird for it to be armor class, since it's magic, but that does simplify things
Yeah I saw some said saving throw. The ones that don't, they are basically arrows, I guess XD
So you have exactly the same shot at hitting someone with an arrow as, say, a ray of frost
Well, the logic applies
If I shot an arrow at you and you dodged it or it bounced off your armor, the same would happen if someone flicked a piece of fire or acid at you
magic doesn't automatically hit things.. Armor Class is armor but also based off other aspects - it's an abstract representation of how difficult something is to hit.
well, fire and acid would interact differently with armor in the real world for sure than arrows would, but I don't care too much about realism, just about knowing how the game works XD
Well, depending on your attack bonus :P
How do I look for a group? When I go to the find-a-dm thing, it just won't let me say anything
Because spells would use int/cha or something and arrows use dex?
I’m not a armor biologist but I think that fire would definitely hurt more when someone is bare chested than wearing leather armor
Bows use dex, spells use your classes spellcasting ability
For example bard is charisma
yeah, it just wouldn't be exactly the same chances for damage. For example throwing a small fireball at chain mail would do nothing, an arrow could conceivably penetrate.
I'm just splitting hairs here to explain why I wasn't certain. I'm fine with the rules being as they are.
Well this is dnd
Dnd is not realistic
For a lot of games armor does NOTHING to block magic.
Exactly.
I just needed confirmation of how the rules worked, and it makes sense as explained.
So if I have it right, a wizard is basically shooting a mind-arrow with their Int bonus, as far as the rules are concerned.
(unless it says saving throw in the description.)
using the power of the weave to manifest an attack rather than a physical object.. I guess.
Considering without their little nerd tome they’re just an old man wearing a sheet
Also I’m being completely serious, if you ever lose your book as a wizard you are screwed
Under no circumstances do you tell your dm that without your book you’re powerless, don’t give them any funny ideas
Is there a way I can find a DND session where I don’t have to periodically join in at the right time, for example (This dnd starts every week at 1:00 PST or EST etc) and can just join a starting DND and play for a bit and leave, and move on? I don’t really have any friends who are into dnd and I find it hard to get comfortable usually.
westmarches are low commitment
You might be interested in westmarches-style games, which are advertised in #looking-for-community. Possibly play-by-post as well.
Hii! so i’ve literally never played dnd before because i never knew where to go to start or how to do it. I really want to learn! can someone help? 🤍
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.

See the resources above to start you off!
You need to use the bot command as explained in #find-a-game
If it says “make a (ranged/melee) spell attack”, then you make an attack roll against AC as with a weapon
Hello to all, I am new and this said it was a newcomers area, any tips for any games starting soon? Looking for some games to practice
Check out #find-a-game
Thanks
The reason 5e combat operates with way it does is to simply the calculating of hit/miss. Older versions had immense tables and formulas for determining these things which were unwieldy
If u want to talk about modifying the rules, homebrew is where you can discuss
yeah sorry i forgot about that channel when i asked
i see, but just a tiny bit of variation would be nice
especially against larger monsters it would make sense
Yea sure how much do you know
Have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
iknow how to make a character
no i have not
You should
i will go wacth it
It’s not a video, its text rules
im not exactly new but im not experienced either, i played 1 game years ago and killed off an entire race accidentally and quit lol, i know a bit about points and what to toss into each class and such but is it best in my case to just head into a game and learn that way? im better at learning hands on anyway
i was just wondering about that, i thought it was kinda silly that tougher armor just makes you dodge instead of bouncing hits but i guess the alternative has already been tried lol
Well it depends, if you have heavy armour you don’t add your Dex, representing the fact that you just absorb the hits rather than dodge
its all in the flavor
Esp can anyone tell me how home brewing in general works or is there a channel for that
I would say so. When situations pop up and the ruling is unknown in a session, your DM can always make up the rule on the spot and comeback to the ruling another time.
for sure, i appreciate the response at all, this is something somewhat new to me but not entirely, im just wanting to try out d&d again, let me see what i can find :)
Okay thanks
Sounds good. Also it was how I learned D&D personally.
same! i learned by watching others and like randomly inputting or playing, it took some time for me to not feel nervous back then but i got hooked and every few months i get like a massive need to play lol im super hands on so i figured playing is easier rather than reading especially since i know a lot of the rules already
That's the best way to learn.
It's easier to retain these things if you're enjoying yourself while doing it, for many people. Though, folks do learn differently.
I learned the basics by being impatient and playing bg3 cause I couldn't wait a week between sessions 💀
LOL i play bg3 all the time which is also what caused this absolute urge to play
I started tabletop first and got way too into it then the bg3 hype train started at the perfect time
where do i find a dnd group
In person or online?
https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1165419349658587137 what race in this is tall
online
The basic rules has general description of the available races but appearance is mostly flavor, you can make it whatever you want

Hello I am new to DND period. I have never played but have character and would love to experience what it is like to play. Unfortunately I am yet to find anyone willing to dm for me.
Hey all, played at uni & have created my own adventures to test my DM skills.
But difficult now to try teach my lad & dm without killing the characters. Am I missing something? We are playing dragon of icespire peak but could have killed him in the first battle
level 1 and 2 is extremely fragile
level 3 and onward is when you begin to get more durable
I got creative and allowed him to survive, dump enemies and wondering warriors etc. I don’t remember it being so fragile
It's a bit beyond the scope of this channel, but the rules can be found in Ghosts of Saltmarsh
Um, hi! I'm very new to DND! Nice to meet you all! I've been wanting to play this game for a very long time but I never really tried it before.
I'm in the newbie state.
I've always wanted to play, so I decided it'd be a good idea to try this out. I'm a little worried I won't be able to do it correctly, but yeaaa....Nice to meet you!
Same, I don't even know if the damages only for weapon, i guess if your melee?
Also the 1d100 confuse me
A lot of things confuse me.
Same here i got into it like almost a year ago except i only ever got the motivation to make characters and learn the basics this month
So what you guys know so far?
Interesting!
Well i know character creation along with how stats work, classes, races
Anything that's in the manual
I actually have four characters I've made, but there is one I'm going to stick by with here. I'll send them in #dnd-arts-and-crafts ! ^^
Wow, I don't even know the difference between classes, like do paladin use spell?
I hope my lil mossball is acceptable :D
Also the level, idk yet the difference it make
Yep! And Paladins are what we call “Half-casters” they know a little magic but they do great physical/melee damage
Ooooooooooooh... I have NO idea what that means :D
I think that means paladin can use basic spell like healing spell
Oh right
Is there an artificer page in the dnd essential kit rule book
I cant find it in classes
Well, I've always wanted to play, and I have like about....4 characters. But for now, I'm gonna stick with Mo since I wanna start off small ya know?
How did you create btw, I don't have one
I only watched youtube video campaigns since i don't have much of the courage to play yet
Oh! Well I kinda just winged on what kind of creatures and classes i think they'd suit, Like this cupid archer and a Cleric Voodoo doll!
Whats ur guys first character in dnd
Im more like magic like illusion but i also like long range sometimes melee, an assasin but not melees
Also im fan of necromancy
So like wizards?
Kind of
They do have ranged attacks like spells
Mine was Gloria the Drider Witch!
I gave her a full on backstory and everything!
^^
There's also a cleric
awesome ‼️‼️
Mine was a rouge human, stereotypical edge lord guy
Ooooooooooooooh
Also had a bard tiefling?? She lived in a barn / farm with her grandpa
The Cleric Voodoo I mentioned was a nun that got recarninated into a voodoo due to her secretly having a love life with a Voodoo doll sorcerer
Every time she uses the two pins to stab at herself, she can heal her team
So it's kind of like a double edged sword.
Only she can also heal herself if focused enough.
That's actually so creative
Aw thank you!!! ^^
I've also made a Cupid Archer who basically went against the whole Cupid thing when tasked to make a Corrupt king fall in love with the kind queen, So, She killed him! :D And now she not only causes hearts to fly but hearts to die! >:]
AYEE ‼️☝🔥
Tbh i was super nervous coming here, I worried my characters wouldn't be accepted into the game or I wouldn't get it.
^^
Nah don't worry too much about it just have fun and wing with it
That's what i do
Thanks. I apperciate it. So does this server like, host D&D games here?
Oh! Right. Sorry-
There's some dms here
Its fine
I'm still kinda nervous, so wish me luck-
Good luck!
Can Paladins become sinister, lets say a paladin is a haunted one and has a tragic backstory. if the Dm and player both communicate is there a way to corrupt the paladin by breaking his sanity?
Look up Oathbreaker in DMG.
Can anyone tell me how the dice rolls work in a campaign sessions, does it only happen during battles?
Or when using a certain skill
Thank you!!
In the most basic terms DM tells you what’s going on at that moment in time, you can then decide what you want to do, the DM will then tell you if you need to make a roll for example, you’re bartering with a merchant for some supplies and you want to get a discount the DM may ask you to make a persuasion roll or some other skill to deal with them or if you RP it well there maybe not roll required
Oh sick, thanks
Hey guys which are the best races to be a paladin?
The one you find interesting to play
Also nice to meet all of you I just joined! 🙂
Ah ok
I’m assuming you have a concept for this character or an image of how they look in your head, any race can play any class
Thank you, I was too worried of how good the race is but now Ik what to choose
Hi I'm new to DnD I've read somethings about it but I still don't really know who to play so can some explain it a bit to me if thats ok
An elf increases your dexterity or a dwarf can increase your strength, both stats do specialise in paladins
My guess
Racial ASI can be moved so any race can do that
My Paladin is a human, I think its really just up to the player
hi there 🙂 i just joined ... i have watched dnd playing for over a year now and i wana play so bad!! but never really did cause i simply don´t have any friends who are interested in it so i rally hope to find the right people here. i would love to start ... anyone who can explain for complete beginners? ❤️
I really wouldn't worry about that too much. Racial bonuses are helpful, but they shouldn't be your main deciding factor
I mean for now I’m thinking to choose astral elf because one of my friends has a book for it but I think it’s good cause it’s interesting but not completely useless to the party but mainly cause I like the concept
You can check #find-a-game if you wanna play in campaigns
Yea I think the main thing is what is fun and interesting
also, i´m not a native English speaker so i´m sorry for weird spelling
do you think it is a problem that i have no experience in playing? i´m worried about not being able to anything right
There's a first time for everything, if you're not used to that basics of playing a game you can watch some campaigns in youtube to see how it all plays out
Warhammer. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) bludgeoning damage, or 8 (1d10 + 3) bludgeoning damage if used with two hands to make a melee attack, plus 3 (1d6) fire damage
Can someone translate this block: What is Hit 7 if there is already hit 5? and then Hit 8?
I understand that there is one handed and two handed attack. But what is +5 to hit then?
The area where it say “hit: x” is the average damage it does
Thats a base number to let you know what sort of Damage the weapon does
Melee Weapon Attack +5 to hit (Add +5 to a 1d20 roll, that is your attack roll)
Reach 5 ft (You have to be within 5 feet to hit a target)
Hit: 7 (1d8+3) (Damage is 1d8+3, which averages to 7)
+5 to hit is the modifier for the ability scores added to the monster and any proficiency bonus added in that the monster has
Thank you
I would suggest eldrich knight subclass for a Fighter or Rangers are a good balance of spells and combat
Druids can be useful, played one for a while and theyre very versatile, with offensive and defensive spells aswell as AOE spells, but they get boosts to weapon attacks such ass shilleighla (idk how to spell it) aswell as things such as flame blade and the use of scimitars too
Plus your chance for healing spells and alot of summoning and conjuring spells make it very fun to play
Send me a dm if you’d like and I can answer questions you might have :)
Ok I will thanks for letting me do that
I feel a little worried when it comes to playing dnd, I still haven’t played with anyone yet but I feel like I might mess it up or it might confuse me a little
I’m not really sure how the basics or like any of the game work
Everyone has to start somewhere, we all didn't know the rules at first.
Oh alright
Just to prepare you for it: you most definitely will make mistakes and get confused, it's somewhat part of the process. It still happens to experienced players. Just roll with it: the more mistakes you make, the more you will learn and get better.
I think the best advice is just create a character you would want to role play as, and that makes it 10x better
You don’t have the best this super smart in-depth wizard of the ancient order of belzariath, you can just be Greg the gullible tourist or something
Create a character whose fun to be
Thank you, I just didn’t want to frustrate my party or the DM since Ive never met anyone from the sessions I’ll hopefully be joining.
Thank you for the advice, I tried to be simple enough with just a plain paladin with a easy background something I’ll enjoy doing
oh my god im making a charcater who's a tourist now
Far traveller background is your friend
The reason I say this is because my current character is exactly that
They’re a changeling warlock whose town was raided by bandits, so he just disguised as one, followed them for a month then left in a completely new continent
alright so ive been dumped with the task of setting up a dnd game. is there like any free campaigns that can be done on roll20 or anything like that
we are all very new to dnd so like we arent 100% sure if we have to make our own content or if we are able to use other ppls campaigns
on roll20 specifically, there are a few:
if you know critical role, I recommend frozen sick
if you are willing to pay a little, then Lost mine of Phandelver, dragon on icespire peak or dragon on stormwreck isle are the 3 official starter sets.
these adventures would need manual setup on roll20 (or any other VTT), but they have a decent reputation as well
ill look into the frozen sick one as by the looks of it the maps are already set up
will probably look at the winghornpress one if this campaign goes well as it seems a little complicated for my mind atm
there are also tons of free adventures on DMsguild.com
I always recommend a simple premade campaign to start yeah
Then trying to make your own campaign if you enjoy dnd is always fun
making a campaign does sound fun but i think ill save that for a later date 😂 Because trying to figure out how all this stuff works before even starting is a bit complex for me
certainly is a combination of premade and homebrew is the real stuff in my opinion
definently dont reccomend it to start lmao
Hello, so if I'm a level nine paladin how does my race affect the amount of spells I can use. For instance my character is a Goliath, how many times would I be allowed to use divine smite or is that limited by rolls and not uses?
It’s based of off your spellcasting modifier and proficiency bonus no?
It doesn't, your charisma modifier + paladin level affects how many you can prepare and your paladin level affects how many you can cast
Oh. How does one gain proficiencies and how many would one be able to achieve on one character?
Typically proficiencies will come from your race, class, and/or background.
Most of those are at 1st-level, though some higher-level class features may provide some.
You’d have to talk with your DM to see which other options are available, but you may be able to take a feat or go through training to earn more.
I’d say most characters probably have between 4-7 skill proficiencies and 2 saving throw proficiencies.
Weapon and armor proficiency varies more.

Hello everyone I’m just starting to learn/ get into D&D and I was wondering if there was anyone or any groups that is willing to help me/ let me join their group the character I’m working on is a Tiefling- Warlock named Corvum.
You'll want to take a look at the #find-a-game channel. Have you read through the basic rules yet?
Honestly I’m still making my way through the basic rules then I will make my way to the find a game thanks for the reply
Good morning!
Good morning
What would be a good one shot campaign to start with for new comers to the game
Hmm, the one in the starter set is good, forget what it is though
Someone will have to remind me
Dragons of Stormwreck Isle.
"one shot" and "campaign" are kinda mutually exclusive
A one shot is a single, self contained adventure that usually spans at the very least a single level, and usually a single session
A campaign is a series of adventures that spans multiple levels and sessions
Which one is it you're looking for?
Hi where to begin with dnd lore?
you can start anywhere, and build around it
i tend to start with a concept, ie, what i want, lets say a astral elf, then i defind her, then i build around her lore, is she a pirate? ect. ecct.
you can also start in more higher terms, what is the world like?
and go down
If you've got to start somewhere, I'd start with the race and class descriptions. D&D has several different settings to explore like Forgotten Realms, Ebberon, that one with the vampire and more.
it's so much lol
you can dm me and i can help
keep in mind, world settings dont have to be limitations
okies thanks
@molten sphinx we have #dnd-lore if you want to ask questions about published settings, and #dm-world-building if you want help making your own setting
I can help!
Thank you!
Where did you come from, how did you get your powers/skills, why are you out adventuring
can i hear about your character first? race, class, general ideas?
So I’m thinking of a paladin astral elf (race still up for debate). Born on a big planet full of laws so will abide by laws even at others expense. I’m thinking loyal but also ruthless?
Enoki's questions are some of the most fundamental, so I'd try to answer those for yourself. There's also a bunch of videos and blog posts on it. Here's one from D&D Beyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1462-creating-a-backstory-for-your-first-d-d-character
He travels to other planets ( as he is astral elf) to maintain order
is he a captain of a spelljammer? or does he hich rides
Thanks let me take a look!
He can cast some mini spells but he basically a crusader so he fights mostly with melee weapons with spells helping
i mean how does he travel
If you folks want to publicly continue the conversation on fleshing this character out, it's better to move it to #character-discussion.

Ahh ok sorry, I’m not that sure of astral elf lore but I think they travel on ships, are they called spelljammers?
no betterway then making sheets
Ah ok
yea
The links above should get you started. If you have particular questions we can clarify, ask here!
:))) thanks
Always wanted to try specially because I'm just about to finish school so it'll be cool to start playing
Video games are getting boring and lonely xD
Folks here find it fun, and it's very much a social game. Hopefully you enjoy getting into it!
You do need to pay to access content on D&D Beyond or have someone share what they've purchased with you.
Ahhh okay
But you can also buy character options individually if you don’t want the full book.
What's locked behind the paywall again? Isn't it some special classes
Anything not included with the Basic Rules.
The Basic Rules is free.
Hm in a have to see
The only class not included in the Basic Rules is artificer.
There's a bunch of basic stuff free. See what you can do with that and a little imagination first.
I'm a fairly creative person because of my ADHD so I'm excited
You can unlock artificer by purchasing any artificer subclass.
Ahhh
Which is like $2.
I'm not to sure who I'd wanna create 👀👀
(And whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.)
I remember making a Barbarian like a year ago
Oh cool
As a new player I recommend to start with what's in the free Basic Rules before you look deeper into other sub-classes
Mkay 🙂
Why is it that when I roll a d20 for actual important stuff I get a low number but when I roll for the stupidest thing I get a 20💀
Think of the Basic Rules as a video game demo that you can test drive before you put money on the full game.
Are there any D&D video games? Or is it just the board game itself
There have been many D&D video games throughout the decades, the most recent being Baldur's Gate 3.
Confirmation bias 😅
It's a PC game Pepe sad
It's on the consoles.
The Switch is too underpowered for Baldur's Gate 3, especially with its 150+ GB storage requirement.
Be advised the games are more “inspired” by the tabletop game as there are rule differences and really nothing replicates the actual experience of being at a table
I like a lot of the changes BG3 made to 5e. I hope a lot of them end up implemented going forward. Not that I am necessarily going to actually buy any new Wizards content. It would just be cool to see.
I like looking more into 3rd party stuff rn
There's a channel for that here: #third-party
Hello! Im new to everything about this game and I hope to start playing in the coming weeks once I get a few supplies and find an online playgroup. I wanted to ask about how things usually go in terms of character creation. Am I expected to have a character created and defined before looking for a group, or are characters made and designed with the group once it is established? Thanks in advance for the help!
When you join a group the DM will often as you to create a new character based on their campaign setting, starting level, etc.
As a new player it's good to create new characters as practice to understand the character creation process and learning how the classes work.
You can get everything you need to play for free. Get the SRD from the wizards of the coast website and you can just hop right in. You only need to find a DM or a group you can DM for if that is your thing.
I'm still dying for my first dnd game ong
Keep looking.
Create a few characters with the SRD and you will know how that whole thing works. Use one to play when you find a game online or a group playing in person. Or you can just start a group too. I started my own but it is so hard finding times to play.
This is because half of us work together and we are short staffed.

You never need to buy anything at all
You don’t need minis if you do it theater of the mind. You can do it in person so you don’t need a computer. Or you can run it through discord if you find a group who does that. The rules are available for free.
I think you can get free rules going back to 3e. I don’t know about before that.
Awesome! I’ll get on to looking at the resources everyone sent! Thanks a lot!!
If you join a table, whether in person or online, usually the DM will share the books with their players.
I’m somewhat new to dnd and am hoping to get into DMing. I already know the very basic rules, but I’m not sure what I should do to be ready. I assume that I should play in a few campaigns to better understand the rules, but is there anything else i should do to learn the ins and outs? is there maybe a way to talk to DMs and learn what to do?

Not sure if exactly the right thread but my friends and I are starting a campaign together and I’m hosting the first session at my place and will rotate hosting with another person in the group. This is my first time even playing dnd so is there any suggestions or tips when hosting dnd that I should know?
Are u doing it frew the app ,as I am looking for groups and to start playing aswell as I am new to D and D aswell
Uhh I would if I new how to play xD
Idk cause I’m not the DM and I’m new to all of this but I just know at least rn that it’s just our small group doing it in person in our neighborhood
Hmm might be suited best for other chat then
if you aren’t the DM but are hosting you are probably expected to have a good space to play and maybe some snacks too
not sure it thats what you are asking though
Yeah we chose my place cause I actually have a dining room big enough to host lol
I have a dining room, even. Love that city life

I cant find any new to all this
@broken rock it takes time
Ok
hi hi
@thin cobalt
I don't know if I wanna make a Barbarian or a rouge
Make a loose idea of each, and talk to your DM.
Any DM have an open spots ive play 1 game and loved it so i want to do another im CST and free most days other than Saturdays
Have a look in #looking-for-players
So I got a question
yessir?
Can my race be a raccoon or no
you can reflavor a shifter to be a raccoon. or a tabaxi
Oooooh ok
There’s no official raccoon race, but yeah, you could potentially reflavor it (simply change the way an official race is described without changing how it works) or work with your DM to find another option.
Ok
Thanks
I’m just making a dnd character for the first time lol
I’m going to be a bard and now I’m deciding what my race should be
Hey, how do I write out a character sheet?
I have a session coming up and frankly im a tad unknowledgeable in that field

i know there is a handbooker helper video on it (link above), otherwise, DDB has a learning mode when you start making a sheet that can be useful. Ultimately though, the rules are in the free Basic Rules (link also above) which if you just follow step by step should slowly flesh out the sheet
What do you have so far? Where are you stuck?
idk if the DM is after an on paper character sheet or an online one
That’s something you’d have to ask them.
Is their any way to play online for smart phone mobile? Only played in person my life and new idea looking into online play but no computer?
I'll do an online one so
It’s possible in theory, but that’s probably something you should discuss with your group.
Find out which tools the group is using and whether they’re available / viable on your phone.
I don't have a group. Was hoping to find one
Played maybe 20 or so sessions and DM once but been a while. Just not sure where to find any fun groups so thought I check here. Thought it worth a shot dropping in discord 🤷♂️
is sneak attack a bonus action or literally just an extra action i can only do on this
The Sneak Attack feature is neither action nor bonus action. If you're familiar with video game mechanics, it is more like a passive
If you meet the criteria, the damage gets added ontop of your attack
so if im next to someone, and want to attack with my rapier id roll 1d8+1d6
Youd start by hitting the creature by rolling 1d20 + your attack modifier. Usually your attack modifier would be dexterity + proficiency
Assuming you’ve met the requirements for a sneak attack, sure.
yea i mean so is it basically a once per turn +1d6 to any attack i make that satisfies the conditions? or does it need its own roll to his
yeah thats right, its additional bonus that adds onto one attack you make per turn
Are there any like video guides to learn how to become a DM that anyone could recommend?
It can be done, using Roll20 to roll the dice and doing the addition by hand.
oh okay, so i wouldnt need to roll the d20 again, its just part of one attack per turn. that makes sense
Have you gone over the basic rules?
For the most part yes, i might need to review a few things again but I think I’ve got that part down
Well, there's always How To Be A Great DM, on YouTube.
You could start with Matt Colville's DMing series, idk if it might be a bit too much for a newer player but its short enough to just give a go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-YZvLUXcR8
I’m just trying to get the hang of it, kids at work are asking me to DM their campaign and I’m rusty, all this really helps, thank you!
hello~
new here, I very much like got introduced to dnd with some of the comics ive read, and I practically know ntg about it tbh (^_^;)
I'm genuinely interested to play tho-

Strictly video guides?
Hello
Preferribly, I’m awful at reading stuff like this lol & i’m much more hands on
I suffered reading through the basic rules 🤣
Difficult clicking newcomer after playing for over 45 years. Just new to discord.
Biggies like Matt Colville and How to Be a Great GM have already been mentioned. You can find plenty of individual videos on any given DMing matter, but the best step-by-step guides I've found are text.
Yeah I figure its usually best to read it rather than watch videos since writing it out can show all the complexities, I just need somewhere to start, thank you v much again :)
Disguise kit or the posion kit
Heyyy so, about the Fighter, the Precision Attack maneuver has me confused, what does it mean by "You can expend one superiority die to add it to the roll", like the damage roll or the roll that makes me hit the target?
The attack roll.
It’s for the attack roll to hit since it uses that langauge and not the damage roll.
When you make a weapon attack roll against a creature, you can expend one superiority die to add it to the roll.
Sickk thaaanks
Adding it to the attack roll makes you more likely to hit.
most other maneuvers add to the damage dealt, precision is purely to-hit
Hence the name: precision attack
If I get the Charger feat, can I use the Dash as a bonus action or does it only add +5 if it's a main action
You only get one bonus action per turn.
If you use it to dash, you won’t be able to use the bonus action from charger.
Makes senseee thaaanks
Im new to the game, anyone wanna see if my character is good?
You can share it over in #character-discussion if you want someone to double-check it.
how does distance and time work?
for what context?
Distance usually in feet
what about moving? how much feet can you move in 1 turn
on your turn, you gain movement equal to your speed
not ft/s
25 feet per round
but yes, that means you can move 25 feet on your turn. If you use the Dash action, you get another 25 feet for a total of 50 feet.
ok thanks]
What would you all suggest is the best campaign for my friend who has never played D&D but watches Critical Role and has played Baldur's Gate 3?
The Starter Set.
Depends on Party size
Tell your friend that D&D:
- is nothing like Critical Role because unless the DM and/or the players are professional actors your friend needs to lower their expectations of what will happen at the table
- Baldur's Gate 3 is a solo player video game that pre-scripted so they need to remember that the rules in BG3 is homebrewed by the developers
Learning the rules by playing is better IMO because you learn on someone else's dime (the DM).
You can head on over to #dm-discussion to ask for DMing advice.
okay thanks
Yeah I've been wanting to get him into D&D but I also don't want it to disappoint him when compared to the more professional stuff like CR. I was trying to figure out a campaign that would be engaging enough for someone who is familiar with D&D. I was thinking maybe something like Curse of Strahd?
Alot of content creators on yt which give Tips and Tricks. Otherwise dmsguild has a good base
ok thanks
I would highly recommend against DMing Curse of Strahd if you're a new DM. It's not made for new DMs...
i have seen a few of matt colville’s videos but i will check out dmsguild
Oh no I would be playing with him lol
Who would be dming then?
Was thinking of paying for a professional DM for his first time
Not sure how many DMs you can choose what campaign they run
Hmm These exist Was never a Fan of it tbh
It’s less a “hire me to dm for you however you want” and more “pay to join my group” most of the time
I've paid numerous DMs and had plenty of free ones and in my experience it has never been worth it. Not a lot of noticeable difference.
It's almost always the DM who decides what to run because they're the ones who have to prep.
Yup
I see
Well, the difference with paid and free DMs is that with paid DMs you're guaranteed a seat at their table.
Curse of strahd is in my opinion one of the best and i had a blast dmin it but ofc is decent amount of prep
Only attended free games
And hosted free
So I should just try to find a free dm then?
Thats up to you i mean im Sure in here alot of peeps will love to have a player
Alright thanks I appreciate it! I know the suggesteed campaign for beginners is Lost Mines
Im more a fan of a oneshot but maybe cuz im biased
Since its not bad but not that great either
Any in particular?
I usually just make a oneshot in forgotten realms nothing big a simple sidequest which is long enough for around one session
Item obtaining, seek and kill, or even interrogation
Yeah, I'd also recommend for a oneshot something fast and simple. It can even be in a homebrew universe or something if you don't want to learn the lore and as simple as "Go kill goblins and bring back the leader's staff, cause they keep attacking our village".
Could be fun to DM a little quest for him in Baldur's gate since he's played the game, see how he likes it, and then if he enjoys it we can both go into trying to find a full on campaign
Indeed rebuilded bg from the ingame maps in Inkarnate and is currently my campaign setting
Gives me an idea. I could focus the oneshot heavily around the character he makes and then when he goes into full on campaign with me he can have that oneshot as his sort of backstory or something. A whole oneshot based on his character could get him interested in continuing playing
Thats a foundation yea
How long did this take?
Making maps alone takes a good amount of time
2-3 hours if you get really detailed
I've messed with Inkarnate a little bit. When I first got into D&D I was going to DM a homebrew setting and then I realized how hard it was considering I'd never actually played before and I gave up on it and have just been a player since lol
Yea beign a Player helps later to dm
So if he does end up wanting to go on and do a campaign, do you think I should just try my hand at dming myself or play alongside him?
Dming a pre-established campaign seems way easier than homebrewing one so I'm open to it
And yeah, it also helps if you were a player first
Did the same as well, and picked up the mantle when my old DM passed away.
Sorry to hear that. Must be a pretty big weight to take on damn
yeah
But once I picked it up, it was pretty easy
helps if you know the players' shenanigans
How much does the module give you? I can't imagine they can think of every outcome for certain scenarios. How does that work?
Uh, Ive had to pull some stuff out of my ass sometimes
and then after the session, i refine those ideas and stuff
lmao well I appreciate the advice. I'll see how it goes :)
What would ppl recommend for someone who wanted to start out? I started one and almost finished it but the dm deleted the server before we finished and I wanna actually give this a better go
Recommendations for what, exactly?
@crude musk sorry got words mixed a one shot
Sorry for the late reply
Also thank you @glass pumice and @wild onyx
do you add proficiencies and/or modifiers to damage die?
which modifier?
DEX/STR depending?
or the atk bonus
whats the atk bonus on the weapons table
Where?
is that just the modifier you add to attack rolls
Ive got a question, How do i go about creating a player. This is probably a horrible question
Can you link this? I’m not sure atk bonus exists in 5e
You use a character sheet, as detailed at the start of the basic rules
like yk that table
Also fyi, you are the player. You make characters
Thank you!
NAME / ATK BONUS / DAMAGE/TYPE
Oh on your character sheet?
Atk bonus is the total modifier to hit
Appropriate stat modifier + proficiency bonus (if proficient)
okok cool and then just stat modifier for damage?
For damage you just add the appropriate stat modifier
cool thanks
This is specifically for weapons tho
Spells you don’t add the stat by default to damage
yep yep
The attack roll works the same tho
Hi there! How do you join campaigns online ?
You can target creatures up to one size larger than you and instead of an attack roll, you make a strength check opposed by your target's strength or dexterity
So like Athletics vs Acrobatics
Nah that would be an Athletics opposed by Acrobatics. When you grapple, the only modifiers being used are your strength mod and their strength mod (some classes allow you to use dex instead).
So like
The dm rolls for Acrobatics and the player rolls for strength ?
I mean for dexterity
Not acrobatics
Yeah, or if the target can’t use dex, you both roll strength checks
Ok and if the target is grappled how does he escapes it?
The target will have to keep making opposed strength checks
When they beat you, they break the grapple.
The upside to grappling is they have to use their action on their turn to break it.
"Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target’s Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use).
A grappled creature can use its action to escape. To do so, it must succeed on a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check contested by your Strength (Athletics) check."
TLDR: STR+Ath for the attacker, defender uses their choice of STR+Ath or DEX+Acr to evade or escape.
You don’t add STR and Athletics.
Strength (Athletics) is just telling you what modifier you use as the base for athletics. If you’re proficient in Athletics, it changes accordingly
Of course.

Hello! I bought a couple dice, but i dont really know what each di is used for.
a lot of different things. have you read the basic rules yet?
I cant seem to find anything about other dice except the d20
theyre used in specific situations generally
d20 is the general one
have a read through the basic rules and youll probably see situations popping up where other die are referenced
What is the D12 for?
D4, D6, D8, D10, D12 are usually used for damage dice (D6-D12 are also used for classes hit dice)
D20 is used for skill checks, saving throws, and attack rolls.
damage is a major one
greataxe damage, barbarian hit die, and some spells iirc
its the least used one probably
I heard that some dms use d12s to set the time
They might? But that's not part of the official rules.
We try and help new to D&D folks get started with the official rules.
I'd recommend checking out the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
