it's like the difference between
someone tackling you over, stabbing at you, but you're able to bring out a blade and parry
and
someone tackling you over and stabbing you, then stabbing at you again, but you're then able to bring out a blade and parry.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but what I'm learning is that Surprised targets cannot react until their turn ends, so if you do something after their turn, even if it is your first turn, they CAN react, they ARE aware of you
if you attack something they become aware of you, unless you missed and have the Skulker feat.
it's literally about who has a better initiative in that fight
Right but I was in stealth when I attacked so they be would be unaware of me right, so at what point do they detect me and I come out of stealth. On my attack?
yes
Do you have to pass a stealth check in this situation?
Before combat
Don't overthink it.
If they are surprised just get a free turn ahead of target. After that initiative is as stands.
So if my mob surprised the party AND won initiative, it would be extremely painful
A successful stealth check makes you hidden. Attacking when hidden gives you advantage on your next attack, after which you are no longer hidden
Like if you call me I'll show you exactly how I would run surprise rounds
Nice thank you
Initiative starts
You take your turn, attack, enemy becomes aware
Enemy turn, surprised, no action or movement, now gains reaction
You take your turn, attack - but if the enemy has a reaction, such as Uncanny Dodge, they would be able to use it as they're allowed to react now after their first turn.
They take their turn, finally able to act.
It's either
enemy does nothing on their first turn
or
enemy does nothing on their first turn plus you got a turn before they are even allowed to take a reaction
So if I have intuitive nd surpised the enemy I get my turn, they can't action due to surprised So then I go again, effectively getting 2 turns in. Row ?
Maybe I'm overthrowing, as was said, if I a party member attacks the enemy and surprises them, but I roll crap on initiative, so I'm after the enemy, can they react to my first turn because their surprised turn is over?
not in a row, necessarily
on your second they might be able to use their reaction, maybe periodic effects happen (such as a troll regenerating at the start of their turn regardless of surprise)
Overthinking *
Right but otherwise I'm correct?
Correct.
Initiative starts
Ally shoots enemy
- no enemy reactions above here
Enemy turn, ends surprise - now enemy can react below here
Your turn, you shoot
better init = take a turn, they take a nothingburger of a turn, you take a turn
worse init = they take a nothingburger of a turn, you take a turn
Apparently my phone thinks overthrowing is a word, but not overthinking, does that make me a rebel? Lol
Ok, perfect explanation
Good afternoon, everyone. I have a question about a DC and was wondering if you could help me. Please keep in mind I am new to DnD. I am going to run the Dwarven Excavation which has a Orche Jelly in one of the rooms. I am setting it up on Foundry VTT where the Jelly is on the ceiling when the PCs walk in. They will have a chance to investigate to find it, but if they fail, I want the Jelly to have a chance at a surprise. I know I could set this up as a simple DC10, 15, etc., but what has me confused are the DCs above 20. My question is, if I want the Jelly to drop down and have it a DC15, what stat would I add to that. And is that how they get the DCs higher than a 20 is by adding stats to it? Thank you in advance.
What do you mean 'adding a stat to a DC'?
Usually, a DC is either
- Fixed, the DM ascribes it even arbitrarily, such as DC 15 being moderately difficult.
- Derived from the proficiency bonus and an ability score modifier from the creature inflicting it (such as a Wizard spell save DC being derived from Intelligence)
For the big scary monsters with DC 23 and such
Their proficiency is very high due to being high challenge, and their ability modifier for the relevant thing is super high.
Because DC calculations are 8 + proficiency + an ability score modifier
What determines. Criticl hit. Is it just rolling a 19 or 20?
Well, I guess that is part of my question. If you don't add anything to the DC, how are you able to have a DC of 30 with a d20? I think I am missing something here.
Natural 20
a 20 on the d20 when making an attack roll does two things
- It automatically hits
- It is a critical hit, so roll the damage dice twice, add modifiers, and that's your damage
Yea, I'm very new, but as DM, can't you make the required number whatever you want? You don't need modifiers for the required number.... right?
Task Difficulty DC
Very easy 5
Easy 10
Medium 15
Hard 20
Very hard 25
Nearly impossible 30
I believe you are 100% correct. My question is how do you accomplish a 30 as listed in the book.
for example, if you are wearing adamantine armor, and something rolls a 20 on their d20 for their attack
It still automatically hits you. The critical hit is turned into a normal hit, thanks to adamantine armor. But the normal hit is still a hit.
Interesting g I was just watching a sample session. He rolled a 19 and said it was a critical hit, this is why I'm asked cause i thought only 20 was critical
for something nearly impossible, more so for the DM to determine.
Otherwise, DC 27 is for something with a 30 in a score, at +9 proficiency.
Oh, sorry, I misunderstood, yea, above 20 you would need modifiers to hit it
Who is "he" you're referring to?
A champion fighter can have Improved Critical so they can have a critical hit on a Nat 19 or Nat 20.
Because DC's are for ability checks and saving throws
For example, a rogue with +5 dexterity modifier, and proficiency with Sleight of Hand, at 5th level, would add +8 to their Dexterity (sleight of hand) checks, making a total of 25 accomplishable but not actually impossible.
You can have items that make 19 a critical, I believe, I may be wrong
Probably because they had a feature to make a roll of 19 be a critical hit.
Such things include being a Champion fighter - "Beginning when you choose this archetype at 3rd level, your weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20."
Ok. So you just determine, like other rolls, what modifier applies and that is how you do it. I thought that was it, but the DMG is difficult for me to read sometimes. Thank you.
For the jelly example, you might say it's a DC 15 Wisdom (Perception) check to notice the ochre jelly on the ceiling.
The question is whether you use Passive Perception or an actual rolled check
That's a good point, it's not something you would normally just see, you'd have to actively look for it
how often do you look up, is the thing
Yeah he had champion thing
Exactly
Thanks inunderstsnd now xD
There's a reason why it's called "passive"
so they were describing that this 19 is a crit due to their feature ye
Perfect thanks again
It wouldn't really be passive if it's way out of your normal view, most people don't passively scan the roof of a giant cavern
like, the amount of clips I've seen of multiplayer games where people just never look up, it's insane.
The best example is in team fortress 2, like 7 people standing in an important spot, not looking up at someone on the enemy team blocking their capture by hiding on top of a light. For entire minutes at a time. Eventually someone notices, representing our passive perception.
Right. I will be describing it well enough that they will think to look up. Subtle clues: "The ceiling in this room appears to be much higher than the others. The dim light of the candles don't even touch the ceiling." Something like that. I don't know. I'm a new DM.
That said, Passive Perception/Insight/Investigation are not the minimum but rather it is the average as if you were rolling over the course of time.
If you were intentionally looking for secret door/traps then the DM would ask you to roll for a Perception check.
since a passive is just 10 + what you add to the relevant check
since it represents you rolling over and over and over
so if you spend 1 hour searching an office, use passive instead of rolling... 600 times
Exactly, it's not natural to look for threats directly above you, you could absolutely choose to, but that's not like a normal thing everyone automatically does, yea
For example, if it's in dim light above them, a DM might impose disadvantage on the passive perception, being a -5 to the passive
Yea, an entity clinging to the ceiling is almost guaranteed to also be in a shadow, they're not hanging there for funsies
Unless they are... then it's likely not an aggressive NPC
That's a completely different situation, then they'd likely surprise you with " hey dudes! How's your adventure going? "
I feel like I just made a silly NPC, like "hey, you! I haven't seen a living person in like 120 years! If my calendar is right, I haven't seen the sun in a long time, so maybe it's only been like 4 days, I have no concept of time...."
Heyyy im a bit new comer to dnd, i'd have some xp in RPG but nothing in dnd
welcome

so for channel divinities do you get both the options and can only use one of the two per long rest?
Correct.
You have 1 use of Channel Divinity. You have two ways to use Channel Divinity.
I believe uses per rest increase, at least for Clerics, as they level...
oh good point thank you (about the short or long)
i also dont really get whats so good about the paladin Find steed spell. but im probably missing something lol
Is it just me or is Channel Divinity useless in 95% of fights? Am I missing something?
Reading?
whose?
vow of emnity is at least pretty sick imo
This isnt the channel to debate the power of things
If you want to learn how to optimize the use of a feature there is #optimization
randomly spitting out uninformed opinions isnt really the point
Understanding the limitations of a paladin and how a mount can address them
ill ask in the right channel at some point , ty š
This is for new playera learning how to play
If you want tactic advice thereās #optimization
find steed summons a creature loyal to you at no concentration.
The steed will usually have more movement than you which can come in play if you for example need to warn a village, you can get saddlebags or even a cart and use the steed for it, avoiding having to buy a horse.
In combat it is its own entity. It can fight alongside you or be used as a mount for mobility (in low lvls mostly as it does not have a lot of HP)
The duration is instantanious, so once summoned it stays till dismissed or reduced to 0, the spellslot used to summon comes back on next long rest.
Its a free horse, im not sure what weāre doing here
Guess that makes sense. We have a Super beginner campaign so i really only think of things mostly for combat purposes lol
Look at the casting time of the spell and itll be pretty obvious if its viable in combat or if its useful elsewhere
one round is six seconds
anything with a casting time more than action/bonus action/reaction isnt a combat spell
then you look at duration
Spells with only a minute last ten rounds of combat. But when youre dungeon diving or whatever thats nothing
This is why any spellcasting class is a challenge for a new player. It demands a time investment to learn
isnt there a stronger variant of it at some point that fixes the hp problem or am i thinking of another spell?
find greater steed
yknow im realizing a lot of the spell naming conventions in dnd are very linear
Do people not steal every cup/plate/rag in sight in DnD?
Some
Sometimes players die when they do that too
Then they donāt do that no more
I was joking, do some really try that? Lol
There are players that believe in stealing everything
Like how there are bards that literally try and seduce everything
see, that's how you get cursed
touching a bunch of valuable stuff that belonged to dead people? nuh uh no thanks that's bad karma
touching a bunch of stuff that belongs to alive people? that's just how you get arrested
I do it in the video games because I can hold like 1000 plates, but I would never try that tabletop, I was totally joking, lol
Donāt get me wrong, stealing stuff is a big part of dnd
Seducing everyone, though, sounds fun
Haiiiiiiiiii
Can I seduce DM?
You can try
0.0
Nat 20
What would that entail
W
Yo āļø
I love this channel
I literally lold
Bribes tend to work btw
(be careful not to make the other players jealous tho)
Bribes cost money, seduction is free
The fee is the chance of failing to seduce then?
I wish you luck
You might lose your self esteem š„²
He says as he invites me to his party......
Pretty high price lol
jokes on you i never had any to begin with
"I wish you luck, sexy tiefling bard who gets permanent advantage...."
Yeahhhā¦. Bards can literally seduce like 60% of commoners they run across at lvl2
If not more
DMs are a bigger challenge, tho
Can I ask a question here about the game btw?
Yup
Persuasion is not mind control
Itās pretty close
Or is it....?
No itās really not and a nat20 isnāt an auto success on persuasion so you cantconvince the king to give you his crown
Alright, I don't mean to complicate it if I do, but I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice for a first-time player+DM? Me and my friends are all starting, and we're having our first campaign soon (The Wild Of The Witchlight). I want it to be as fun as it can be and last a while š
Or can you...?
If youāre looking for a dm or players try #750812887697588356 or #looking-for-players
But advice-have fun
Advice to players is interact with other players in character-it really adds a lot to the game
Advice to dm is learn what your players enjoy-rp/combat/puzzles/etc and include more of what they like and less of what they donāt
I don't think anyone in this channel is an expert, and I'm 100% not, but keep it interesting, roll with the punches, your players will probably do the stupidest things ever, so be prepared for them to literally fall down a flight of 5 stairs. Your most useless preparations will probably be the ones that actually get used
True, and let the party do stupid things without too many consequences, you may even end up on a completely different route to the same goal
i like the prepare within reason approach but i'm generally fine to just make stuff up on the fly
You have to, no one can prepare for the stupidity of players
I have the worst luck in existence, I can try to walk across a 6 foot wide bridge and somehow fall into the chasm.
Thanks for all the advice; I don't want to mess up or freeze in the middle of the game because I don't know what to say or do afterward
Just go with it, no campaign goes to plan
You will freeze, you will mess up, just laugh at yourself with the party, keep it fun and move on
Oh, yea, totally, it won't just flow freely, you will need a minute to figure out what happens next, totally
Thanks a lot, lol; this lifts some weight off my shoulders for sure
The biggest thing to remember is everyone is doing this for fun
Including you. Have fun.
Hello, Iām very new and never played D&D before, Iād like to ask what is a better idea between go find a game and speak with the DM first or just create the character before joining?
If you arenāt confident making a character Iād ask dm, otherwise you can make a more basic character and find a campaign to play them in
If you make a character that you love, and it's pretty flexible, you can probably fit into any campaign, most parties are a random group of misfits
Thank you so much!
My 2cp is to suggest you look at some of the more basic options first. Use the standard array for your scores and content from the Players Handbook.
Sorry then
I would say this though - I'm a DM, and when selecting players for a campaign, I will negatively select against people who have already created characters. Why? I prefer characters to be created once a player has some knowledge of the world and its lore, so everyone has a more cohesive and enjoyable experience.
DMs who do this are very common, probably even a majority.
i'm not very experienced, but you could always start with a more general character concept in mind (their personality, what they believe in, their shortcomings) and fill in the more intimate details (their relationships, backstory) once you actually learn what the world you're playing in is gonna be. then you could work backwards to make a background that allows the kind of character you want to play to fit into that world seamlessly
dont take that as workable advice though im as clueless as you
Works for me.
"He's a hot-headed fighter from a humble farming background looking to prove himself."
Is that Luke Skywalker of Star Wars or D'Artagnan of the Three Musketeers?
yeah exactly. 100 people can be of a certain similar background and come out as 100 entirely different people, but as much as that's true, the inverse is also true. 100 different people can come from 100 totally unique, individual backgrounds and come out remarkably similar people
this also applies when you are Making A Guy, you can make them as one person but a multitude of different backgrounds that fit a multitude of different settings could all reasonably make them that kind of person. or so i assume anyway
Thank you for all of your answers! I will surely consider this when joining every game I come across from now on
what is a warlocks proficiency bonus
proficiency bonus is always determined by total character level
you can see it in the Warlock table in the PHB/basic rules
(or any other class table)
"Every class has the proficiency bonuses listed in the class table. It's 2 at level 1, 3 at level 5, 4 at level 9, 5 at level 13 and 6 at level 17. If you want a formula instead, it's 1 + 1/4 level (round up)."
if im a level 1 warlock but a level 8 druid could i cast a level 1 warlcok spell at level 3 from my druid spells
Yes, you can cast one of your first level warlock spells using a 3rd level spell slot, if you have access to spell slots of that level via multiclassing
For regular spellcasting, you just need a spell slot of at the same level or higher of the spell you're casting. Doesn't matter if the slot comes from your Druid's "Spellcasting" feature, or your Warlock's "Pact Magic" feature. There are a few Eldritch Invocations that let you cast a spell but require a Warlock spell slot to do so, I believe those are the only times where the "type" of spell slot matters.
Sorry if this has been asked- but is there anywhere to get into a beginner campaign online? I live in a very small town and I have no one within a 2 hour radius to join me
Maybe #looking-for-players
Sadly not a lot of players are keen to play on Tabletop Simulator
As a note, not everyone who posts in #looking-for-players specifies they're open to new folks, but they still could be. You just might need to ask!
hi! im a new dm, and im figuring out my players' character sheets right now. can somebody please explain hit dice? also, how many spells does a cleric know at first level?
hit dice are what you roll on a short rest to get hp back and what dice you use to gain max hp each lvl up so hitdice (1dX+con modifier) per lvl, you also add con mod on rest to heal
my party just got to lvl 2, and im trying to figure out how many hit ponts they all have
So they would have their base hit points (the maximum number on their hit die + their Constitution modifier) plus one roll of their hit die (+their Constitution modifier)
As for your question about Clerics, it describes it in their spellcasting feature: they know prepare a number of spells equal to their Wisdom modifier plus their total cleric level
thanks
ok lets say cleric lvl 2 14 constitution as an example would have 10hp at lvl 1 and 10+(1d8+2) at lvl 2
also, about clerics, ive read they know all of the spells thats in their spell list
but they dont even fit on the character sheet
For example, a fighter's hit die is a d10. At level 1, they would have 10+ Constitution HP. When they hit level 2, they would roll 1d10, taking the result and adding their Constitution again, and adding that total to their maximum HP.
Its important to know the difference between "knowing" a spell, and having it prepared
Clerics prepare their spells, which means each day they choose a number of spells from the cleric spell list, and those are the ones they can cast that day
but they know all of them?
(Colossus is right, a minor mistake in my message that I've edited)
"Know" means thats the ones they can choose from each day. Its not what they can actually cast
ok cool, ill stick an extra piece of paper to the character sheet to write all of them down)))
theres a little circle to say prepared, right?
next to the spell name
Think of it like this: Clerics have access to a big ol' room of camping gear, but can only bring what they can fit in their backpack
i got it. thanks
there should be, yes
Have you read the basic rules? All is explained there
ive got the player's handbook open right now, i just didn't find it clear enough
honestly prepared spells vs known is why i play sorcerer instead of wizard
I'm not new but I don't really understand some things and I would like to join a new campaign

i've got another question: i feel like one-use material comps are too expensive and too much of a hassle to track. would it be balanced to just not pay attention to that, or make it so that they're a one-time purchase?
for my level 2 party
(lost mine of phandelver btw)
there are very very few one time material components this early in the game. most spells dont have material components at all or have the simples ones that can be just replaces by a focus or component pouch.
i would suggest tracking the ones that come up. the spells are somewhat balanced around them
Earliest one with costed components is probably Find Familiar. It's an extremely useful spell, and it's ritual cast so it doesn't burn a slot. I would use the material requirements to keep the players from abusing the use of familiars, and to be mindful of keeping their familiars safe.
Some spells with costly material components ARE a one time purchase, so the game is already balanced around whether or not the material is actually expended. Making it so no spells expend their components would definitely break the balance of the game. This is especially true at higher levels, but it is still the case at low levels too
Hi everyone, im super new to dming and am urrently trying to make a pretty basi ampaign. any advie? (sorry about missing letters if i want a c in any word i have to opy paste it from something else. im using an old laptop.)
I would recommend heading over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice and tips.

Having possibly the worst time ever trying to come up with my character's backstory š Does anybody have any advice?
i'll give you the advice I was given, you don't have to write a whole short story or anything like that for your backstory you could just make bullet points or just take what ideas you have and put those down
š That's good advice! Your backstory can be as simple as you'd like if you don't have anything in mind just yet. And you can work with your DM to expand it later when you've got a better feeling of who your character is!
Even something as direct as "My character is a simple blacksmith who has taken up the sword to fight for the innocent!" can be the start of a great character!
and if you're having problems with thinking up elements for your character put down what ideas you have and make a "spider graph"(those things where you have a central idea in a bubble and add any things that you think could relate to it)
I sea, Thanks!
Can you use a healing spell on scars?
it's a part of my characters backstory and it affects my character's playstyle but I want to make sure that if my character has a healer in her party they can't just get rid of it
There's nothing about exactly what is/isn't healed with regards to healing spells, so you'll have to ask your DM about the specifics of how they see it occur in their game.
If your a rogue and a sorcerer with the dragonic bloodline as a multi class, can you infuse your rogue attacks with your Dragon/Damage type?
I need some advice in finding groups if anyone knows much about this topic. I want to find a group but I don't know how to find one that has the same level of passion for roleplaying, character and story. Does anyone have any ideas or advice on how to find the perfect people?
Nothing in the Sorcerer class features says you can, so you can't.

When players gain a level what's gets updated?
It's different between each different class, you can look at the tables of each class and look what do you obtain.
Universally you get more hp tho
how long do temporary hitpoints last? do they stay forever until the player gets damaged or will they go away after a fight
They last until a character gets hit and they are all used up. Or until the spell says they go away
If whatever provides them doesnāt specify otherwise, they last until the next long rest
Or if neither of those happen, until the next long rest
I'm new to DnD and I got a question

Have a look at the basic rules
Reading is gonna be required
Is there anything I can do to get way better on dnd? Iāve reared the player handbook and Iām starting a campaign but I donāt know what else to do?
Thatās normal
Is there anything else I should know
No one expects people to know everything. Or even all the things for one class.
Learning takes time. We all started there.
Thank you! I need to here that!
What's the total amount of points can you have on your 6 main attributes?
D&d is a group game. When you collaborate with the other players you all succeed more. Some people have a video game main character mentality where they have to always win and be the best- that doesn't help in dnd
Just make sure you know everything your character can do
The maximum you can get (apart from some feats) is 20
Without special items to raise it higher, the stats top out at 20.
There are some exceptions but not a ton
You generally wonāt start with any 20s tho
Also @fleet field and @deft sigil what is the rainbow dnd logo by your profile? Should I have it?
It's the gay thing
Itās just an aesthetic thing
You can grab it if you want
Yeah all the name badge options are aesthetic, anyone can use any of them
You can choose an icon in id:customize.
Thanks! Found it!
Hi, I'm completely new to DnD, so I have little to no clue about playing. I can't figure out if there's a way to play by myself or how to find a group to join and whatnot.

D&D is a socially collaborative story-telling RPG game. It's built around the idea of a group of folks getting together to play, one person taking the role of the Dungeon Master who helps run the game, make rulings, and guide the story forward. Players then take the role of player characters who interact with the world/adventure the DM sets up. Together, they all help tell a (hopefully) fun story and have fun together.
That said some folks have built rules to allow "solo" D&D play but it's kind of a different thing than what the game was originally designed for.
Alright then, how do I find a group to join?
Check #find-a-game - it has useful info on how to find a group/game and explains how to use our LFG (Looking for Game) channels.
Okay, thanks :D
Also recommend checking local game/comic stores, public libraries, and other places (school clubs) where D&D folks can be found.
Anyone even uses Tabletop Simulator to play the game? Or is it just DNDBeyond and Avrae mostly?
I use Foundry VTT, it has an one-time license fee (only one person has to pay (and that's usually the DM)). I think everyone has to have a copy of Tabletop Simulator but no free client side (please correct me if I'm wrong on this).
Basically everybody uses FoundryVTT tbh
Do spellslots represent how many times you can use spells, or how many times you can use a specific spell?
Spells in general.
Hi, im new to dnd can anyone please teach me? And if there is any new dnd campaigns pls lmk! Im learning bard and I am hoping to play with someone
You can use your spell slots to cast all different spells or the same spell multiple times.
Welcome! Thereās some handy links a few messages up to get you started.
Right here āļø
But if youāve got any specific questions, feel free to ask!
So hard for me to find people to do this with bc they either have an age restriction or they live somewhere else. A lot of the ones I have been seeing with neither are also super specific about what I should be or too vague and provide no real context. Im so lost. What does sandbox mean????
Can you please tell me what they are?
I canāt even find a game yet :/
Oh my bad
I donāt want to start one because I wouldnāt have a clue of what to do and me coming up with something on the spot to lineup with someoneās choice is unlikely because I overthink everything and donāt end up choosing anything at all. How do these dms do itš©
They just gain experience from it I guess
I would literally need someone to hold my hand every step of the way
Oh
I have no clue what I am doing but I did get a players handbook so I am not completely lost
Ig thatās good
I already read that other guide thing completely aswell
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

Yeah I realised u sent it before, my bad
A sandbox game is a very open game
Itās a variant of the human race. Lore wise theyāre the same, the only difference is in mechanics
Whatās the difference in mechanics?
Regular humans get +1 to all ability scores. Variant humans get +1 to two scores, a skill proficiency, and a feat.
What is the best class to play for a newbie?

Fighter and barbarian are the easiest
Oh
fighter easiest
Barb, rogue, monk same ballpark
Does being a Figher and Barb Require good luck with rolling?
Cause i could not roll a D20 to save my life lol
.<* so Rogue with all my stats in Stealth it is lol
Also just letting you know, D20 is the name of a 20 sided dice. Iām assuming you mean Nat 20
Rogue is even more luck based imo
Itās based around single attacks that theoretically deal big damage
Iām planning to do a bard+rogue class is that okay? Or is it not ideal?
Multiclassing isnāt recommended for a new player
Whatās your reasoning behind multiclassing bard and rogue?
You generally multiclass when thereās a specific thing you want from each class mechanically
It seems kinda interesting
Kyle?
But also itās versatile apparently and I want to play bith bard and rogue
Spelling horrible
You can very easily make an extremely weak and unfun character with random multiclassing
I searched it up apparently itās good because itās versataile
What is? Multiclassing?
The combo
Itās not really
I just got recommended it by a friend and wanted to try it our
Thereās no good synergy
oh. Is bard with a criminal background good?
Backgrounds donāt make a mechanically difference that much, theyāre really just flavour
So. Both bards and rogues are skill monkeys
You only reach their potential as such without double dipping
The thing is the mechanical thing that makes them āskill monkeysā is expertise, which double their proficiency in certain skills of their choice
Each one on there own gets enough expertises to cover al the skills they care about
If you multi improperly you lose out on spell slots higher level features for options they have built in anyways
Also expertise can be gained through feats
So you don't need to multi to become uberskilled
It's less versatile than either class
Your friend has no clue what they're talking about
Just play single-classed bard
It's more fun, more versatile, more effective and more customisable
Half a monkey and half a monkey doesnāt make two monkeys, it makes under one monkey, with some scraps missing where you cut it
Spellcasting is the most versatile feature in D&D 5e imo
And with Bard you get more spellcasting
They tried this. It makes a paralyzed monkey
Actually yeah thatās a better analogy
This build is a paralyzed monkey
Is a bard with crinimal background viable?
background does not affect your mechanical strength, and bard is viable, so yes.
Oh ok
As i said, backgrounds are mainly flavour, so it doesnāt matter
Keep in mind you can switch out one feature of a background for a similar one
your friend may have had a lot of lenient/inexperienced dms, on top of this it's unwise to multiclass with your first character, let alone with one as high maintenance as bard, a lot of us are saying this from a position of having made that mistake, pace yourself
ye
Oh ok, thanks
Does anyone here play using a VTT?

your best bet for a 3d Tabletop that people play is Tale Spire
Iām still gonna try and run DnD with tabletop sim, as there seems to be quite a bit of interest in my request on several platforms haha

@coral cliff check out some of the links above (especially the basic rules), it'll help answer any questions you have about how the game works
What's the difference between a Sorcerer and a Mage?
There is no mage class, do you mean wizard?
Yes, my bad
Flavour wise, sorcerer has innate magic, while wizard learns their magic
Mechanically, wizard uses int and sorcerer uses cha. Wizard also gets more spells and can swap them on the fly, while sorcerer can modify the spells they have using Metamagics
do all tabaxis HAVE to be rogues or is that just a stereotype? i have a tabaxi characters who basically a stealthy thief but itās a like a baby kitty n stuff so it doesnāt realize thatās itās actually stealing it just has crow syndrome idk
There are no race/class restrictions
So is a Sorcerer more powerful?
Any class can be any race and vice versa
No
Howdy
hiii
every class in this game is relatively well balanced with each other. Neither the wizard nor the sorcerer is more powerful than the other
Umm⦠not really
Wizard and sorcerer are roughly equivalent in power, but the other part of that statement isnāt exactly accurate
What makes you think this?
Certainly, every class has its own strengths and weaknesses, and some may excel more in combat than others, but in a co-op PvE game like D&D, power balance between the classes isn't super important. The point of the statement I just made was that a newcomer shouldn't be concerned about which class is "more powerful" as part of their character creation process. There are of course some power discrepancies, especially between martials vs casters, but it doesn't really affect the actual playing of the game that much, and its absolutely not something a newcomer should be worried about
So then, are you saying one is more powerful than the other?
Wizard is more powerful, but it doesnāt matter too much
Theyāre both good
Fair
I was just curious as to why a person might want to choose wizard or Sorcerer over the other. I'm not particularly interested in either for myself
In 99% of games, you should play whatever you think is fun and fits your character, but be aware that D&D isn't a game where the classes are balanced very well at all
Is this char op
No, this is giving useful advice to a new player
I generally agree
All characters are fun in the end
TBF, I only said they were "relatively well balanced." Which, they are. Certainly, some are more powerful than others, but nothing is so much more powerful than anything else that it actually affects playing the game, Especially not for a newcomer
Well, a newcomer probably shouldn't be playing in an ultra difficult war game anyway
This sounds like a discussion for another channel, folks.
fair enough
Tabaxi rogues are just a stereotype. The race does have some natural synergy with the class, which makes it lean into this stereotype a bit, but you can play any race with any class.
Replying to you
Yes, tabaxi rogues are just a stereotype
No, they donāt have synergy
Yes, any race can be any class
well, I suppose you are right that this is a discussion for another channel then
Yep
If folks want to answer a newcomer with their own take on a question, theyāre welcome to do so.
This is not a channel for debating the answers of others.
Tabaxi can be whatever class they like - in fact, any race can be any class, with no restrictions whatsoever. Tabaxi doesn't have any features which force it to play any particular class, though you might like to build your character around the claws, with a Monk perhaps.
In short, if you want to make a Tabaxi Rogue, by all means build your perfect "cat-burglar"!
monk?
Itās a class
if you donāt mind can you give an explanation of what class that is in dnd?
Monk is like a martial artist
With some minor magical abilities in the form of ki points
Hi I am new to the DND world an wanted to ask if anyone had advice on how to start playing for newbies like specific rules or handbooks or anything like that so far i have a dice set

what a coincidence, i have books but no dice :/

Could someone please explain what all the races are!
The Basic Rules has the list of the standard ones. They're described here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/races#Races
Thereās too many to explain, is there a specific one you are wondering about?
I've chosen variant human
There are 168 races, so that might take a while, but humans are a diverse and adaptable race, ambitious and versatile, found across a broad range of ethnicities and cultures.
I don't think we need to explain what humans are... š
I think they were made from clay or something
š
Nice, thatās a pretty good choice
Sorry if I'm interrupting, but I was wondering about how I go about finding a community/team for DnD on here? I checked out the looking for players and looking for community channels but I would like to play with a team in my time zone. I'm located in central europe. Also, I'm still a beginner š
#looking-for-players is your best option, youāll just have to keep looking and waiting until one that fits your time zone comes up
whats constitution as a stat?
From page 12 of the Player's Handbook, constitution measures your health, stamina, and vital force, and is a crucial stat for every character
The six ability scores are explained here
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoreSummary
Wdym?
what are they?
In what context?
Where did you see this? I canāt remember where the term āscore calculationsā is used
On D&D beyond making new character
Oh thatās which method you want for determining your ability scores. I would go with standard array, itās the simplest
Oh
why is it so hard to find people to play with
Because there are waaaaay more players than there are DMs.
hehe
not even that for me
they just have an age limit i dont meet and/or live in a different area somewhere across the globe
actually, iāve been trying to find a dm for my friends and i, i just want to know the whole dice thing and where to start n stuff so

Hi, I'm a little bit nervous writing this. I'm an Asian immigrant who has lived in America for 10+ years now but even though I have lived in America for so long I still have a heavy Asian accent and people have a hard time understanding me. So I become self-conscious and anti-social because of it I am alway afraid of playing DnD, I just feel like I would ruin the game for everyone. I don't want to ruin other fun. Anyway should I try to play DnD even if no one understand me?
BRUV go for it if anyone makes fun of u for ur accent shame on them ur bi or even trilingual and they can barely speak 1 language dont limit urself
How would I even start? Where can I find a local game near me?

I'm not a newcomer, but can you join parties on "beyond"?
@misty whale if you're looking for a game to join, follow the instructions above your post
is there by chance any class/subclass that's uniquely equipped for a playstyle focused around summoning?
Spore ranger from what I can tell
thank you
shepherd druid
im not sure, but i think i like the flavor of the shepherd druid, and if i say 'animals,' then i'd just be circling right back to that
so i suppose i've got a satisfying enough answer, by that metric
Druid will get the summon or conjure animals spells a lot quicker than a ranger
Hi! im a new dm, and as im leading a game my players need to pass a check to open a door. they fail it, and so they say "i try again". is this allowed? it seems to break immersion, but i don't know what to say without outright saying that they can't do that
Generally a roll would represent all your attempts, so they cant just keep rolling again and again until they succees š
ok, and how do i say that they can't do it again without breaking character?
Well as a DM you don't really have a "character" to break when you explain things to them, and in this case it's probably the best approach to be direct and explain it
what if another character tries to do the same thing?
They'd either do their own roll, or the DM could also rule multiple characters trying to do the same thing / help a character do a thing a help action, giving the original character an advantage on their roll
ok! but can't this be abused by the players? someone tries to do anything, another person says "ill help" and they get advantage on every single check?
You try to open the door with your lock picks you hear a snapping sound as the tip has broken off in the lock jamming it
You can rule that some things just cant be helped with, or ask the player how their character is trying to help to add to the roleplay š
And yeah as said above, something to either prevent or even discourage multiple attempts is to have consequences for failures / repeated failures / failing by too much š
Multiple people trying to repeatedly open a door is bound ot make some noise, for example
alrihght! thanks a lot. so like, trying to jump over a large hole - another person can't help. but carrying a heavy object they can
Jumping has rules and doesnāt require a roll
There is a section in DMG about this
āSometimes a character fails an ability check and wants to try again. In some cases, a character is free to do so; the only real cost is the time it takes. With enough attempts and enough time, a character should eventually succeed at the task. To speed things up, assume that a character spending ten times the normal amount of time needed to complete a task automatically succeeds at that task. However, no amount of repeating the check allows a character to turn an impossible task into a successful one.ā
well, yea. as another example, maybe you can't help someone preform on stage
ok, thanks
So maybe if they need to do it quickly they might get caught
Thatās good #character-discussion material!
Hey y'all, I realized my Tiefling doesn't fill my space for magic, and it's a reaction spell, can I use it multiple times a day then? Or just one reaction per day?
By teifling spell are you referring to hellish rebuke in the infernal legacy section?
Because that section clarifies its a reaction once per long rest "...you can cast the hellish rebuke spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest."
Ah aksdjaksjdkasjdkjasd def should've read that more carefully, didn't put that in my notes, thanks!
So it's basically just one exclusive space for the spell, cool
there's something I don't understand with copying spells in the spellbook
a wizard can only copy wizard spells in the spellbook
but where is he supposed to get these spells from?
Spell scrolls or other wizards books
Spell scrolls, other spellbooks
Find a library cast detect magic and go looking for magic books (this is all DM dependant)
spells scrolls but only with wizard spells written, then
because I don't think my DM knows what a spellbook is
so he won't give me the opportunity
Thats you and your DMs job to have a conversation about how wizards work
Finding scrolls is totally DM dependent and a good dm will dole them out regularly
I don't fully agree with regularly. It shouldn't be never or rarely but magic isn't always easy to come by.
And I'd expect less wizard scrolls if a dm drops spellbooks where you can learn multiple spells from one source
Regularly is being used broadly. The current dm is doling them out never
question: do the big online dnd resources (dndbeyond and roll20 from what i can tell) have content sharing? like if a dm wants to use certain extra backgrounds, spells or subclass selections that originate from a certain book, does everyone need to have that expansion, or does the dm having it share it with everyone in their campaign?
On D&D Beyond, at least, anyone with a Master Tier subscription can enable Content Sharing for a campaign.
Once thatās enabled, any game content owned by anyone in the group gets shared with everyone else.
Roll20 apparently has a similar content-sharing feature: https://help.roll20.net/hc/en-us/articles/360037258674-Compendium-Sharing
Just wondering what the best website (or method) is for either watching games or playing with people online? I'm very new to this (yet 41 years old), and trying to get my head around it all so I can better play the game with my daughter.
spirit bard as my first charachter. dumb?
@forest forge Are you starting a LVL 1 or LVL 20 campaign?
Games on YouTube and Twitch are plentiful. As for playing online, some use virtual tabletops like Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo. Some keep things in the imagination. But so long as you have a means of communicating (Discord, Skype, etc.), you can make a game happen.
hello, my friends and i have chosen to play our campaign in a norse setting - gods and myths included. i want to play as a warlock and thought serving nidhogg would be very interesting though as i looked further into its traditional, story i got myself wondering wether it would be more of a fiend or great old one creature. what are you guys opinions on this?
@forest forge As long as you have a good DM, the game is easy to learn and very fun.
Neither. Just starting online. I've only played about 3 D&D games in my life and most of the stats went over my head. I need a firmer grasp of the rules etc. I've read rule books and stuff, but without application, I easily forget, so need practice more than anything.
I guess I'd be starting at level 1?
@forest forge You should choose a simpler class to start with like fighter, and then create a character sheet. Once you do that, the game is (for me) much easier to visualize
Where are you reading āsourceā?
dnd character sheet
Good shout. I have some template character sheets from a starter pack, and the recent D&D Adventurer. Am hoping to get to grips with a fighter on that.
official one made by Wizards of the Coast
What part of the sheet?
Ah. Source is what book from the company contains that spell.
I could see an argument for either. You might get more feedback in #character-discussion.
oh alright, thanks!
o
wat does it mean for like
save/atk?
the die?
If the spell requires an attack roll, youād put your bonus there (spellcasting modifier+proficiency bonus). If it requires a save, your spellsave DC should be there.
whats spellsave DC
The number your target needs to meet or exceed to save against your spell. Have you read the chapter on spellcasting?

I have a question, is it possible to change the character you are playing it the middle of a game? Like in the start of a session,
What is some DnD player etiquette that is not that obvious?
the dm is also a player
I don't think I consider myself an annoying player but i wanna know what are some red flags for behaviour that at first aren't too apparent
This is not typical and something that would likely need to be discussed with the DM and the rest of the players.
I'm not sure if I'd classify it as an etiquette thing, but I really do encourage my players to "give the spotlight" during the game. (Said another way, I ask them not to hog it.)

One of the members in my party acts really really pedantic on mechanics and is also reading the MTG book in his free time to outsmart our DM
Also spamming insight every single time we talk to an NPC we don't trust
Interesting
Is there a limit to who i can give guidance to or can I just spam it on anyone who makes a skill check?
Im new so im learning as i go
Thatās ok insight isnāt mind reading or magic you might roll high but that NPC may just be really good at hiding their emotions
No but it's like
We killed a guy who had a bounty, forgot to turn his head in for a 100 gold reward
Itās concentration so only 1 person at a time
I know if there was a player who was constantly rolling insight checks at my table, I might get a little annoyed. That kind of stuff can really slow things down. But yeah, context matters. I'm sure it's fine for some groups.
So as long as all the players aren't rolling for the same check, I'm free to just hotpotato a d4 around my group?
Then my friend proceeds to talk passive aggressively to a random NPC we don't trust because he thinks she's taken the head
DM as her responds "you don't know who it was, you don't have proof, and there's nothing you can do about it"
But for like 10 minutes on and on like this
Itās still a spell so yes you can use it as many times as you want but itās situational if youāre casting it to help someone persuade a guard or something than they may notice youāre casting a spell and then react to it
Oooooh. That's a smart way of explaining it.
So try and be sneaky about it and use common sense.
Hello
Hello
I have never played d&d before but I want to try it and advice
Watch videos to learn the rules, try and get a few characters together on dnd beyond and then try and find a group c:
^ This has alot of good stuff that helped me.
Thank you
Welcome
I got most of the basics down but i can always watch the video. Is it captioned?
To refresh my memory
I just started today
hey guys ~
Hello
I've been wanting to play DnD ever since i played BG3 lol
How close is BG3's gameplay to Actual DnD ?
I don't have friends to play dnd with but I really wanna play right now
Same although my friends wanna play but theyre all very busy with jobs and stuff :/
I am not really sure you can compare a video game to dnd table top.
are the rules the same ? if not I'll start learning them for the table top ~
I have not played bg3. There's a free rule book. I'd start there
I mean in bg3 you're fighting a monster with graphics etc.dnd table top is someone describing a story and you rolling dice.
the rules are fairly similar, and at times all the wild possibilities of tabletop get simulated surprisingly well in BG3, but ultimately, in tabletop D&D, humans tell a story together and adapt to everything that happens, no save scumming but also no "invisible walls" and multiple choice dialogues
I saw YouTube videos of people playing d&d and it made me wanna try it
It's not something typically played by one person like bg3
ahh okaayy ty for explaining ~
My player recommendations are here: #dnd-newcomers message
Iād also add two more: āDonāt make your fun interefere with anyone elseāsā and āMake a character that wants to go on the adventure. If āwhat your character would doā is antithetical to the group or plot hook, make another character.ā
Do you add your DEX modifier to your scimitar's damage?
Please avoid asking the same question across multiple channels, especially when itās been answered in the proper one.
How do I get people to play dnd with me
Ask them?
Nobody wants to play
You can play with folks online. Read through #find-a-game.
Itās a game. You find other players by asking and searching
Question, can someone simplify what this first page mean?
Or tell me dexterity means
In simplified terms
Or simple explanation
Dexterity is like agility
Dexterity measures: Physical agility, reflexes, balance, poise
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoreSummary
Ok, is this accessible within the app?
I have the app, just don't know where it is located
That i know, because of one of druid characteristics
Um about the abilities, how and when do we use them?
Abilities do different things
Is there a specific one you are wondering about?
Every ability will state what it does, including when you can use if it is active
Hold on. Are there abilities that are from the start and others you develop yourself?
Are you referring to "ability" as in ability scores or class features?
Well, I remembered a short campaign i was in. It was three player, and we all used abilities but I don't remember how we did that into the campaign
And it was d20
I would recommend you read over the Basic Rules again.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores
Sorry, what is the difference ? š š
Yeah, I'd suggest checking out the free basic rules again as it may help you phrase your question in such a way we can actually help answer it.
hi
Hi
is there any general wisdom on when you should use spell slots versus just using cantrips or weapon attacks, or in out-of-combat scenarios, when you should try more conventional methods? i assume you'd use them sparingly since they only recharge on long rests, so how do you know when the moment comes along?
This is something every player has to figure out based on the context of their game - so I can't really say there's any "general wisdom". It's more of something you figure out as you play with your DM and group, something likely determined by your character's play style, the adventure pacing, and when and how long and short rests happen within the game. As well as what the DM throws at the party.
Depends how long your "adventuring day" is. If you're playing an one-shot with just one battle then you can go "nova" in that one fight. However, if you're in a mega-dungeon with few places to rest then you should conserve your spell slots.
right, that's fair enough
im a new dm and would like some help on how i should dm bc i will be making a campaign and dming it soon some idea on how it should be done would be great
This is a good starting place: https://howtogm.guide
ok
tysm this will help a lot
Getting guidance as a bard sounds really damn good I can't wait to play it
Played my first game last week and why oh why did i not discover this in highschool. Its addictive
lmao im in highschool
I believe that's where most find it.
Hi so I just got the starter set and I have no clue how to play d&d
Hi there! Have you read through the rulebook yet?
Not completely
Okay so you'll want to start there. If you have a specific question about the rules, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel for that topic.
No... just use what you have right now.
You may also want to watch a D&D livestream on YouTube or Twitch - with the understanding that it's entertainment first and not really a "this is how to play D&D" but it can help you undersatand some of the game mechanics and vocabulary.
Ohhh ok
So yeah, start with your starter set, read the rulebook, watch some shows of D&D, and feel free to ask questions here.
There's usually two directions this comes in from what I've seen
Is it 'how does playing a TTRPG work' or is this 'I don't know how the mechanics work'?
What
We're trying to help new to D&D folks get started. Do you have a question?
No
Is there anywhere I can make my own spellbook with my prepared spells instead of having to look through the PHB every time
DnDBeyond and it's character sheet's "Manage Spells" feature?
If you're playing in person you can create spell cards with post-it notes or cue cards.
I had a similar idea. I was going to put them on a deck of cards
how do I know which dice to use?
For determining damage, the weapon or spell will say which dice to use.
Any time you need to determine success or failure, basically.
And yeah, the rest of the dice are primarily used for damage. Whatever youāre using will say what to roll.
The weapons table has a Damage column which shows the dice to roll for that weapon:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#SimpleMeleeWeapons
And Fireball, for example, says this:
A target takes 8d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/fireball
When you level up, do you take an ASI first, or do you gain extra health first?
You only get ASI on levels that offers ASI (level 4 is the first ASI)
IK
Every level up, you roll for increased hit points based on your Hit Dice.
ASI has nothing to do with you rolling your new hit points.
At lvl 6, I get an ASI, and am wondering whether I invest in constitution, then add my health, or if I add my health and then get my ASI
If you increase your Con score that the modifier changes, you retroactively get the hit points from the earlier levels.
You do?
So if I were to invest two points into constitution, at 4th level, I would automatically gain 6 HP?
So for example, if you're a level 5 fighter with a 15 Con (+2 modifier) and at level 6 fighter you increase you Con to 16 (+3 modifier), you would retroactively get an additional 5 hp for levels 1 to 5 (on top of the new hit points rolled for level 6).
Hiiii guys
hiiiiiiii
Hello +v+
I have almost no idea how to play dnd but i really want to get into it so i am here now!!..
Questiunā¦can the characters you play be kids?? I have a character i wanna convert to dnd format since i enjoy him a lot but hes 13 so im not sure if i couldš§
if u need a dm i'm here to help-u-
Also is this the right channel for dumb questions ?!1
Any help appreciated !!..
Yes! ofc, as long as the dm and the other players dont think its "Weird" but useally people dont mind
Alright :DD
This channel is to help out new players to D&D. There are no dumb questions.
what he said
Okayye!!
i may be new to the server, but im a hardcore vetarn at dnd
My school has a dnd thing going on but theres no space left :((
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
well theres always space here for new peeps
Noopeā¦.i probably shuldā¦.Are they online?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Oh thank you!!
I also recommend players handbook to understand playin as a charater
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources
Okay :)),, im going to draw some characters first since i wanna draw a lot rn, but ill be sure to check it out!! I kinda need to, to know what m doinā¦
There's no rush for new players to go buy the Player's Handbook. The Basic Rules are free and covers everything they need to learn the game without spending money, especially if they may not like the game.
Thatās often considered very weird and disturbing given the kinds of dangerous situations the characters can get in to
Can i just make up character races?
true,,,
I wouldn't recommend it. Start with ones in the rules.
No, there set races you can choose, as races give mechanical benefits
sure you can
You can reflavour existing races to other things tho
Homebrew (aka custom made) races are up to the DM to allow or not.
Ouaa
you can its called "Homebrew" but for now start with the easy stuff
I might go with tiefling or human, thenā¦
Yeah homebrewing stuff while new to the game is a very bad idea
As a new players I suggest you stick with what is in the Basic Rules before you try to make up stuff because you don't know the game mechanics yet and if they're balanced or not.
you tried it to huh?
True!
No
oh dam
I just know itās a bad idea
I've been playing/DMing for 40+ years. I'm very iffy letting my players bringing in their homebrew stuff.
yeah, unless they wacthed 10 yt vids
Forty ?! Lordy lordšØ
Anyway, again. Read the Basic Rules and/or watch the tutorial videos linked earlier.
THIS IS LOWK INTIMIDATINGā¦
ive been here for about 7 going on to 8 years
My lor
Yes, some of us here are old school D&D players.
its not as bad as it looks
You just need to know about how your character works and basic combat rules.
Dnd looms so so so fun thoufh
my family told me "its satanic" but its just stupid fun
And im an oc obsessed guy i have ā¦..plentyā¦.
I have about 20 rn and regularly give some old ones away to friends because i get bored of emš
A lot of them are demons so i could probably adapt them to tieflings pretty easily ?! Maybe ?!
I lived through the 1980s "Satanic Panic" (Stranger Things season 4 kinda touched upon it)
ye, its a wee bit different but tiefling is just 75% demon 25% human
Gotchu :3
Not really, tiefling is just any fiend/human cross
Generally devils tho
Tieflings are not necessarily half-human / half-fiend. Their parents and grandparents could be full human but they're born tiefling (the exception if both parents are tieflings so their children are tieflings). Think of it like a recessive gene that can skip generations.
Thats so complicated WAA?/
yeah, thats a more accurate description
in simple terms, tieflings are dnd demons
Thatās misleading
?
Basically some ancestor long ago had a dealing with a fiend (demon or devil) and some of their descendants are tieflings while others aren't.
Theyāre fiendish people, to be more accurate
No. Again, read what I just posted above:
Tieflings are not necessarily half-human / half-fiend. Their parents and grandparents could be full human but they're born tiefling (the exception if both parents are tieflings so their children are tieflings). Think of it like a recessive gene that can skip generations.
How are they not? what seperates them from demons other then there human genes?
Tieflings are Humanoid creature type, not Fiends.
Demons are a type of fiend
@..@
Tieflings are not
i was saying a humanoid demon not a fiend(sorry id didnt explain that)
please stop saying demon, they are not always descended from demons
also tieflings arent demons anyway, or any fiend
THIS IS SO COMPLICATEEED..
We're trying to educate a new player and you're spreading misinformation.
@agile walrus https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/7-tiefling just have a look at this for better information
Thank yew..šall i wanna know is a quick run down of if theres any appearence rules for em tho cus i wanna draw rn and im too lazy to read atm (will later 100% thou..)
Im sure hes jus trying to help @.@ i appreciate it anyways..
have a look at this: "Tieflings are derived from human bloodlines, and in the broadest possible sense, they still look human. However, their infernal heritage has left a clear imprint on their appearance. Tieflings have large horns that take any of a variety of shapes: some have curling horns like a ram, others have straight and tall horns like a gazelleās, and some spiral upward like an antelopesā horns. They have thick tails, four to five feet long, which lash or coil around their legs when they get upset or nervous. Their canine teeth are sharply pointed, and their eyes are solid colorsāblack, red, white, silver, or goldāwith no visible sclera or pupil. Their skin tones cover the full range of human coloration, but also include various shades of red. Their hair, cascading down from behind their horns, is usually dark, from black or brown to dark red, blue, or purple."
yeah i dont think its intentional
If it was intentional I would have said it was disinformation rather than misinformation.
Thank you!! Perfect!! :DD
Off to draw me some guys..
Good luck. You can post your character art in #dnd-arts-and-crafts
Will do !
Can tieflings have curly hair? Sorry, dumb question, i just dont think ive seen anyones tiefling ocs w curly hair..
How individual tieflings look is flavour and flavour is free. The things that they all have in common are horns (whatever type is up to you) and tails.
WOO okay good i had a fun horn idea
in Action surge why do people say it doubles your attack actions even though it only gives an extra turn in reality?
- Attack is something you can do with your Action.
- Fighter gets to do more attacks when they attack (at certain levels, 5, 11, and 20).
- When you surge, you take another action (Not the same as an extra turn)
- If you attack, surge and use your second action to attack again, you've doubled your attacks.
Does that make more sense?
Hellooo
I just started so a lot of this is confusing
What is D?
I see things like 7d8 and 1d6
means dice or die
Ok tysmm
1d6 is a six sided die, 7d8 is 7 dice with eight sides.
Oo okkk
Tysm
That helps a lot
7d8 means roll 7 8 sided dice. 1d6 means roll 1 6 sided dice
if something equals 7d8 for example, it equals the result of rolling 7 8 sided dice and then adding together all the rolls
It doesn't give you an extra turn.
It gives you an extra Action. You can use this action to take the Attack action, making as many attacks as you're allowed. So a 5th level fighter, with Extra Attack, can make two attacks instead of one when they take the Attack action.
One action does two attacks. A second action does two attacks, for a total of four in the whole turn.
a turn and an action are different. a turn consists of an action, a bonus action, and your movement
Is it unethical/immoral to use a RNG instead of dice?
Not at all
Itās a very common option
Dice arenāt perfectly random either, there will always be small imperfections in their shape
Thank you, i thought i was weird... guess not:D
Hello Iām new and looking to play DND online
hmm š¤ okie š
Is there any DM and players here who are from asia? Particularly SEA, im having quite a hard time finding games for my schedule, it'll be my first ever game and i dont want to be the reason for bad schedules, sorry if wrong channel
@inland lily you might wanna read whatās in the #find-a-game!
I have, I dont understand how it works unfortunately, i dont do discord much
I mess up everything, that includes commands
Type /looking click the option you want hit enter then the bot show appear to fill out
What does the recharge 5-6 mean on a dragonās breath
possibly 5-6 hours
Ok how do I figure that out
The notation "Recharge X- Y" means a monster can use a special ability once and that the ability then has a random chance of recharging during each subsequent round of combat. At the start of each of the monster's turns, roll a d6. If the roll is one of the numbers in the recharge notation, the monster regains the use of the special ability. The ability also recharges when the monster finishes a short or long rest.
Hi everyone
I'm kind of a beginner player/GM using Role Gate.
As a fellow SEA player id have to say the #looking-for-players is rather american/european oriented time-wise, youd have better luck finding games in server of your own country/city
either that or you might need to adjust your time availability
How would i figure out using finding a dm thing in the #find-a-game its bit confusing
Id love to do that but studies won't let me, thank you dude, glad i have someone to understand, and yeah my country doesn't do dnd, quite unfortunate.
Type /looking click the option you want hit enter then the bot show appear to fill out https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1089904541140521003/1160562420029329498/IMG_3738.png?ex=65351cfb&is=6522a7fb&hm=a037a2f412cebd12d472d1a15890e0809b84e8445c21087a284b6fc3bef27e36&
if you dont mind language differences i can pm you my cityās dnd server
But in that channel, correct?
Oh okay! Sure: D thank you, I'd love that
Any channel where you can type should work
;-; well i think i tried
š you can also look through the ads in #looking-for-players and respond in the thread underneath
Hey guys so a little bit on hit dice, so for example d6 would be the type and if I has 1d6 I can only roll 1 d6 when short resting? Or is that each rest? I'm a little confused on the short resting rules and hit dice
You roll as many as you want on a short rest and get half them back (min 1) on a long rest
So if you a lvl 2 wizard you could roll 2d6 on a short rest but when you take a long rest you only get 1 back
Okay so how do I know how many I start with ?
1 per character lvl
Perfect thanks for the help Enoki appreciated
is it possible for me to stick an explosive to my echo (playing an echo fighter atm) and when an enemy hits my echo it explodes?
That'd be a question for #dnd-rules but the short answer is no
oh alright thanks
Hiii
Hi
hiiii
hello
Have fun and enjoy your time
Hello! My friends and I lost our DM (he went MIA) and weāre trying to find a new DM how do we go about doing that?
read #find-a-game and then send in #750812887697588356
Thank you!
Does height weight and age change during the course of an long dnd campaign just trying to see if i type these or need to pencil in
It can
Not that I've seen, unless some effect happens that changes it (like some spells or the wild magic surge table.) I'd mark it down just in case
Iāve seen it happen once
Why did it happen
A player touched a cursed artifact and disappeared for 10 minutes, came back he aged 40 years to be a old man
Lmao
Apparently he spent 24 years in a pocket universe where he was the only person
Haha well was that homebred?
Homebrew yes
Other than that weird little thing
Iāve never seen anything else use aging
Only like enemies and traps
Great thanks everyone c:
hello
Welcome!
Hello!
My wife and I want to host a game of Dragons of Stormwreck Isle.
We watch Dimension 20 and listen to Adventure Zone but weāve never played DnD.
We have 4 people total, so there will be one DM and 3 players.
I am seeking advice on how to be prepared to make sure everyone has a good time. All of us have never actually played a campaign but have wanted to for years.
The rabbit hole of advice is deep, so, in the interests of avoiding overwhelm, here's a good introductory resource: https://howtogm.guide/
The adventure itself has some good tips as well.
But itās fine to make mistakes. Itās fine to pause the game if you need to look up a rule, and itās fine to just make up a rule to keep the game going.
Outside of that, I'd say, "Communicate and set expectations as much as needed (ongoing and pre-emptively)" and "Prep as much as you need to in order to feel confident."
If you have specific questions, #dm-discussion, #dnd-rules, and https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1029841458661957682 can help answer them.
Bookmarked! Thank you!
These are all great suggestions! Thank you guys for being so welcoming. I look forward to learning more.
Does the Sentinal shield add 5 to your passive perception, or does it give you advantage? I can't find anywhere online to give me a straight answer
Here's how to determine a character's total for a passive check:
10 + all modifiers that normally apply to the check
If the character has advantage on the check, add 5. For disadvantage, subtract 5.
Your advantage on Perception checks translates to a +5 for passive perception.
+proficiency bonus if proficient in perception
Since passive scores donāt involve a roll at all, itās impossible to roll it twice.
So an example would be 10 + 1 (wisdom modifier)+ 3 (proficiency bonus)+ 5 (advantage)= 19 passive perception?
Yep!
Does DnD have spells that target the ground like in BG3? They hit multiple targets and damage if the enemy is standing on it which means their damage potential is huge
They also create bad terrain, itās great
There are spells that can target a point in space or on the ground, yes.
Is Hunger of Hadar a DnD spell?
I believe I saw that under warlock
Spike Growth, for example.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/spike-growth
And yeah, it is.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/hunger-of-hadar
I feel like i never see any clerics lol
Any cleric characters in-game? Or any users on this server with a cleric icon?
Im sort of new to dnd. Ive played a few times. I mainly watch alot of dnd campaign and alot of videos on it. Im just new to playin really. I want to play with all girls, does anyone know a group or community I could join were its just girls playing ?
You can take a look at different games advertised in #looking-for-players and #paid-looking-for-game and see if there are such games.
my brainpower is to small to understand what is hapaning in the looking for players thing
Dungeon masters post about games they are looking to have players join. They include number of players they're looking for, what the game is about, rules, style of the game, and you can reply in the thread that you're interested. Sometimes they will write if they want you to DM them
Does this +5 work on all passive checks? Can you direct me to a page for that?
ok lets say i understood evrything
Here's how to determine a character's total for a passive check:
10 + all modifiers that normally apply to the check
If the character has advantage on the check, add 5. For disadvantage, subtract 5. The game refers to a passive check total as a score.
Source: Basic Rules: Passive Checks
Basically, since a passive check is a ability check where no dice are rolled, and advantage and disadvantage modify the amount of dice rolled in an ability check, passive checks need to use this alternate form of advantage and disadvantage to actually funtion. This does not apply to normal ability checks
Is there any way to gain more bonus actions?
