Hey guys, what Classes can learn "Summon Mount?"
That's not an official spell
It's difficult to bring a pre-generated character to a game.
A DM might use a different method to generate ability scores, or not trust pre-rolled ability scores, might disallow certain races or subclasses, and the things in your backstory might just not exist at all in the setting.
I assume you mean Find Steed, in which case Paladin.
i believe you mean steed?
Oh, well looks like that explains it xD
Oh, Find Steed is a Paladin spell?
correct just as greater steed
Find Steed and Find Greater Steed are maybe what you mean?
And they're both Paladin spells
Bard also has the ability to get access to the spell through Magical Secrets.
Only Paladin's can learn it yeah?
it is only on the paladin spell list yes but there are special ways to get spells on others spell lists
I was looking to see if there's anything Clerics can do to summon a steed.
That would be more a #character-discussion question as there are ways, but many of them
Cheers mate.
i swear i thought i remembered "outcast" being a background but on dnd beyond i dont see it. am i just dumb or am i missing something?
you might be thinking of the outlander background?
outlander and hermit exist i guess
question - Where can I find a place that lists (better yet displays on a map or has a search by zip code) store locations that have Adventure League games happening in them?
This will be your best bet, but call ahead and check as some don’t update their offerings.
@quartz crane We also have #adventurers-league
hello so i’m new to dnd, never played before, but really want to get into it
however it seems like- a lot and was wondering if it was possible to play a much more basic level of the game. dumbed down even sjdjdj
Absolutely! Just the other day I played as a character using Rock, Paper, Scissors dice for combat and a series of +/- dice for chance rolls
pff
sounds fun
i think the hard part for me is idk how like. committed i can be? what with school and outside things
As committed as you wanna be—you could play oneshots where it’s just a single adventure here and there, all the way to X length of time. Or so I’ve heard
oo mhm alright
I get stuck on how to use the dice. I know the d20 is usually used for chance and the d10 (00-90) is usually a percentage die, but apart from those I get lost lol
yeah lol
so many dice…
Which dice to use is normally spelled out within the ability!
The other dice are for healing and damage, generally.
oo helpful sjjdjk
yeah cause me and my friend both have never played d&d before, and want to start just don’t know where

Attack rolls, Ability Checks/ Saves, and many other things if not specified are almost always D20's
oo yeah i’ve heard that. listening to a d&d podcast rn
If there's any question, read the thing you're trying to do and if it's still unclear check with your DM.
Good tip
Sometimes just explaining what you're trying to do in character allows your DM to make the mechanical decision.
"I want to break down a door."
DM: "If you're using your weapon make an attack roll. If you're just trying to barge through/ kick it down, make an athletics check."
mhmhm
i guess at the end of the day it’s the DM’s decision usually?
or they just know if lmao
ig*
Most things are pretty well spelled out. Sometimes it's up to the imagination.
For example if the character you're using is super strong already and trying to break down a thin door, the DM may just say "no roll required as you would break through with ease"
sounds good
Don't let the mechanics stop you from trying to do cool things in the moment, but also make sure you're leaving room for other people to shine. At the end of the day it's a team game/ social game.
cool! my friends coming over this weekend, maybe we could find a DM then to guide us through our first game :D
Or one of you could be the DM!
:0 oo i didn’t know you could do that
i thought you needed like. three people at least lol
I like “but…” reactions lol. Example: You make an attempt to attack. You roll a medium number (10-15 on d20). The attack resolves, BUT X happens….
It's possible to play one player, one DM. This is called duet play, and there's a whole site dedicated to it: https://dndduet.com/
Cool!
yoo that’s neat
maybe we’ll try that
Would it be possible to use coins to determine success/fail? Like, heads for one tails for the other?
Sure. It simplifies things greatly, but it can also slant the chances of failure/success in major ways. Whether that's good or bad is up to you and the players.
theres lots of free dice apps for your phone or you can just look up dice roller online if youre worried about not having the correct dice
If whoever's DMing needs some practical advice, I'd suggest https://howtogm.guide/ as their first resource.
I know the one time I played, the DM had us using Rock Paper Scissors dice for combat and +/- dice for chance and success/fail
At that point builds are thrown out the window as stats are no longer affecting roll success
It doesn't sound like this was DnD. Other TTRPG products are available, and work more like this. Some people prefer that style of play.
Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
i made a thing for find a game... do i have to wait for a thread to be made?
Should be a thread under your ad
my ad never went into the "looking for..." channel
Bring it in #moderator-support perhaps?
ok
hi all, am looking for a bit of help, the brother is looking to start dm'ing is their any good 5th ed campaign books you might recomend?
also, if i buy a mindflayer model does that include the rules or do i need to buy the monster manual seperatley?
What do you mean by "mindflayer model"?
the zoidberg looking thing
if i buy one in the shop do i get the rules for it aswell? the baddies in baulders gate 3
Are you referring to the plastic miniature?
yes
Those do not come with the associated monster stat blocks, as far as I'm aware
ah okay thank you 🙂
It's just a miniature. That's it.
As for your first question, the Dungeon Master's Guide is always a good book to have as a first time DM
DMs also need the player's handbook as well (or at least access to the free basic rules)
And there's a few free adventures you can get online
You don't even need the DMG or the PHB. The free Basic Rules is all you need to start as a new player/DM.
well moving a little past that into a more long term campaign, id heard of a campaign book, i dont know what its called but esentially the bad guys had already won
and the world was in a bad way
Free Adventures

The Lost Mine of Phandelver is free with all D&D Beyond accounts. It was written for new players and DMs in mind.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
Never heard of anything like that, at least officially published by WotC.
oh it was, it came out like last year i think
It could be a third party publisher.
Vaguely sounds like Darksun
WotC has been avoiding dark themes of late...
what about doomed forgotten realms? thats it
Hello, I’m relatively new to DND (I understand like…basics and I did a oneshot play through) I was wondering what resources people use for character making and how to like…find people to play with?
If anyone has any like advice I’d really appreciate it!
My friend lent me their dice and player guide book because they’re not playing for awhile, so I do have those handy :)
If there is a nerd store by you, you can check out there to find people
This helps immensely!
That's a 3rd party creation (not official)
Lost Mine of Phandelver is only free until October 6. If you want it, get it now.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/claim/source/lost-mine-of-phandelver
Unfortunately I’m not sure where the closest one would be. The only place I can think of is EB-games but given the fact most people who do play dnd there are over 20, not sure how comfortable I’d feel abt that ya know?
But I’ll definitely have a search

I made this extensive guide to looking for games/groups: #third-party-tools-archive message
wait.. is "looking for players" the one you use as a player and not a dm?
DMs post in Looking for Players. Players post in Looking for DM.
ok... the find a game rules i jut realized say "joining as a play" to use "looking for players"
You can respond to the ads in Looking for Players if you're hoping to join a game. If you're hoping to be passively picked, you'd make an ad yourself in Looking for DM.
oh ok... then i used the correct one
Why it take so long to find group
So many more players than DMs, and scheduling is a pain
Unfortunately, it's because there's few Dungeon Masters and a whole lot of players! It's also because getting 4-6 people who have a schedule matches up for 3-5 hours is very difficult
hello
Yeah, finding a group can be hell. I originally got the 5E PHB a few years ago and even when I did find a possible group. They'd fall apart in less than five sessions due to scheduling conflicts.
I used the D&D character creator to make a character and the roll20 game finder to find a campaign. That’s what I would do
Hope that helps
what is owlbear?
It's a monstrousity.
:/
owlbear.rodeo is a VTT (virtual tabletop). You use a browser for it (no software to download).
oh ok... is it owlbear rodeo?
This site/VTT: https://www.owlbear.rodeo/
VTT = virtual tabletop, an online area to play games
nice
Hello everyone, how is everybody?
Hi I’m new and I’ve never played a campaign but I do have a character and have been asking my teacher for help, for ability scores would I roll/set them up at the beginning of a campaign or before? Probably stupid question sorry
It's not a stupid question.
Ask your DM if they want you to roll or use Point Buy/Standard Array.
If you don't have a DM yet, use either Point Buy or Standard Array.
(99.99% of DMs want to witness any rolls for ability scores)
Are there any guides that cover the various combat actions for characters? I.e what can be done as an action, bonus action and reaction by class?
Your actions, bonus actions, and reactions are based on class. Read the class and class level on what they can do.
Most things use an action. Certain spells and class features may be a bonus action. Reactions are more limited and restrictive (opportunity attack is one).
Outside of combat when is wisdom actually needed
Ability skill checks.
Yeah I get that but I don't actually understand when ever you'd do wisdom
Wisdom is no different from any other ability outside of combat.
In the basic rules, there is a section on combat that describes these different parts of your turn (or others)

Basic rules linked free
Look aa your character sheet under skills, it will list which skills fall under Wisdom. Those are based on your wisdom modifier (and if proficient, your proficiency bonus)
More pedantically, your dm will instruct you when to make a check using the relevant skill when appropriate
Is there a thing in here for one shots I’m new and can’t find any on roll20
Not really specifically for one shots - might have better luck looking through #looking-for-community for D&D servers that may offer things like that specifically.
Alright thanks man!
If a rogue tries to stealth to attack an orc, would the orc contest the rogue's dexterity with their wisdom?
The orc's Passive Perception (Wisdom) versus the rogue's Stealth (Dexterity) check.
Remember that ability skill checks are d20 + ability modifier + Proficiency Bonus (if any).
If the orc is actively looking for the rogue then it would roll its Perception (Wisdom) check against the rogue's Stealth (Dexterity) check.
An orc lookout. Does that mean he's actively looking for an enemy? It's not a goblin, so I know goblin's are lazy. I'm a brand new GM so all this information that you're giving me is good. I guess that would be my determination whether the orc is passively looking for intruders or not...
That's up to the DM to determine if the guard is actively looking or not for possible intruders.
I would recommend heading over to #dm-discussion to ask for DMing advice.
Thank you.
You may find it is simpler to have lookouts just use passive perception. As DM, you'll likely have a lot of rolls to make already. I hear some just use the average roll value every time...
Of course, dice rolls can also add drama. They may be expected if a player makes a contested roll that seems particularly good, or bad.

Any newcomers play on TTS?
quick question...I'm new...going over rules and everything...just wondering if you can you find and play D&D just online? I'd like to try that to start, before trying to find groups around where I live...
That article gives a good overview for how!
thank you!
what's the idea behind a lockadin build?
also i just realized this may not be the best channel to ask this
#optimization maybe?
If you as asking about the workings of more optimized builds that focus on the mechanical aspects then yes
Its a charisma build. Starting as a Paladin, you main line Charisma as a stat. Then after getting spell casting and holy smite as a paladin, you switch gears and multiclass as Warlock, whose spellcasting stat is also Charisma. Usually taking the Hexblade subclass. The paladin oaths can go hand in hand with some of the warlock patrons so they have good role play synergy and they are excellent in combat. They can use both the warlock and the paladin spell slots to smite, and they regain the warlock spell slots on a short rest making them have more longevity over a single adventuring day. At level 3 warlock you can become a Hexblade which lets you attack with your melee weapon using your Charisma stat instead of Str or Dex. So now instead of having to worry about 3-4 stats, (Str/Dex CON and CHA) you only have to worry about Charisma and Constitution which opens you up to
taking more feats
just asking for help is a bit vague. What's the problem?
Not for this channel
Every warlock will be charisma based
I'm new to DnD. My time zone is CST and I'm available on thursdays after 6pm. Please PM me if you need someone in your group. I'm eager to learn but don't know where to start. I just started investing my time into this hobby.
Can we not a. Post links without context or b. Post complicated stuff in the newcomers channel
your Patron determines your subclass. There's the Archfey, Celestial, Fathomless, Fiend, Genie, Great Old One, Hexblade, Undead, Undying
Have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
Makes sense, sorry I thought it would pop up with a blurb like sharing links on other forums, specifically its a 5 minute build video on making a Hexblade Paladin.
As you can see here @blazing thorn they were redirected to another channel
Also you got some of the info wrong anyway
A lot of warlock is just
pick your subclass
pick your spells
pick your eldritch invocations
pick your pact boon
repeat steps 2 and 3 as you level up
Wheres the pinned messages on mobile? Sorry, its like 1230am and I just got off work from a 14 hour work day. I go back to work in 7 hours.
Swipe to the right, it’s at the top of that panel
ah, the great old one patron
For a fighter with crossbow expert feat... can they use a hand crossbow and a shield simultaneously and still be able to shoot and whatnot? And also, if a fighter has on them a hand crossbow, shield, and schimitar, does it take a turn for the fighter to put their crossbow and their back to take out the schimitar and swipe at someone with it? Or does it still allow them to have access to both for attacks?
No, since they need a free hand to put a bolt in it.
If they have a hand crossbow that does everything by itself, then they can use it fully one-handed
Crossbow expert ignores that part if I remember right
No
It doesn't give you infinite ammo
it doesn't give you autoloading
it just lets you shoot it faster. You still need to put a bolt in it, the ammunition property
It ignores the Loading Property which is a limiter on action economy
it does not ignore the Ammunition Property which requires the use of a free hand to load ammo
If you want to use a crossbow as a semi-auto, you skip Crossbow Expert and take two levels of Artificer and select the Repeating Shot infusion
But this is getting very specific and probably better served in #character-discussion
Also review the section in Combat that covers actions. you can draw a weapon as an object interaction without using your Action but stowing a weapon will also cost an object interaction, so you cant do both
of your choice, it's your character. What do you want your character to be good at?
good at lying and Nature measures your ability to recall lore about terrain, plants and animals, the weather, and natural cycles.
because the Fiend is in the basic rules, but other patrons are in other sources
such as the Fathomless being in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
it's your only available option unless you gain access to others
That explains a lot
can you divine smite and eldritch smite?
As you were told previously, let’s move this to #optimization
i'll just look it up

Ello Ello Ello everyone, I'm new here and I wanted to try out dnd
Hyo! The post right above yours has some links that can help you get started, and of course you can always ask questions here!
hai guys :>
that's the neat part. We don't
only around 1 dm per 10 players
and if campaigns usually have 4-5 players then that leaves half the players without games
It can take time to find a group so a lot of us have had to learn patience.
I found some of mine at my local games stores or online through discord, zoom and the like.
D&D is not a "Wait in a lobby for 3 minutes until the game starts" type game, you've got to have patience

My friend told me about dnd and i find it interesting and i wanna know how to play and what I have to buy to start playing
@craggy quiver Hey, check out the links above to get you started as a new player
@simple goblet this?
yep!
That's the one
Also gonna look at the links as a newbie as well
hi everyone. im new here and wanna try out DnD
Welcome!
hello! me and my friend are really interested in DnD but were having trouble finding a group. What do you all suggest doing to find one?
We have #find-a-game as a start.
If you need more options, I made this LFG guide: #third-party-tools-archive message
I bought the dnd starter set, and i wanted to know how exactly spells work. It's the one thing i'm confused about. I also don't know where to find the spells i can use on the sheet
The game seems fun so i want to learn how to play correctly
What are the particular questions you have after reading the rules on spells?
I can't find them on the sheet and I don't understand the spell slots
I'm not familiar with the starter set's contents, but spell slots I can clarify. Are you using pre-made characters that came with the set?
Yes
What class and level spellcaster do you have?
wizard and im not sure about the second one
You don't know the character level? If it's on a sheet, it should say so on the top of the first page.
So wizards know 6 spells as of level 1 and 3 cantrips. This info is contained in the class description: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard
You can see see on this chart (https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard#TheWizardTable) that a level 2 wizard has 3 level-1 spell slots. Wizards can't have all their spells at the ready. They can only prepare as many as their Intelligence modifier plus their spell level. This is also in the class details.
Let's say the wizard has a 16 in Intelligence, meaning a +3. They're level 2, so they can prepare 5 of their 6 spells. One of those spells they won't be able to cast until after a long rest.
Spell slots are how many spells they have for the day. So a level 2 wizard can cast three level-1 spells. It can be three different spells from that list of 5 prepared spells, it can be the same spell three times, or it can be one spell and a different one twice. The thing is you can only cast spells you have prepared.
I know that's a lot of info.
It is a lot but helpful. Thank you
Hi there, I'm new to D&D and RP, I have a level 1 Paladin in search of a group of adversaries to start my adventure into the world of D&D.
I have spent a good while reading and preparing but theres so much I might easily forget and need a reminder as I'm not good at keeping information. also I've created my charecter to have visioual issue as I my self have one and dont know what its like to have full vision, witch would mean my other sense like hearing might be hightend, but that all depends on the DM and rules.
You should start your search for other folks with #find-a-game.
Hey, is there any suggested videos or breakdowns for building your first character? I've got a sheet and rulebook in front of me but don't want to mess anything up!
Here you go: https://www.wasd20.net/dd-character-creation/
Thank you
thanks will do,
I have a question but I don’t know where this would belong in. So is it normal to be partial to a certain dm like say you really like the style over one dm than the other or is it ok to have more than one dm you like ? Or is there a rule saying you have to stick with that dm ? Because you want to branch out but feel obligated
I have never encountered such a rule.. you can like the gamestyle of more than one DM at a time, play in as many games as there are accepting tables.
Not every player meshes with every DM 100%.. same goes the other way. Finding tables that work the best for you is a totally valid thing to do. Just if you choose one DM's game over another, be kind when you decline the one game.
You can play at many different tables as your schedule can handle.
Hello everybody im new to avrae and am trying to learn how to set up a homebrew spell with avrea could someone help me with this?
#ddb-avrae-help can help with that, but the short answer is to use the Avrae dashboard.
Thanks so much
I’m new to dnd and I’m wondering if I should make my character sheet before or after I join a campaign?
It's best to have a vague idea of a few characters prior to joining a campaign, rather than having a fully filled character sheet. That being said, there's nothing wrong with practice! Go ahead and fill out a sheet to get an idea of what it's like, but be prepared to change some / all of it depending on the game you join!
You can create a character for practice but expect to create a new character when you find a DM because they'll probably make you create one that fits their campaign setting.
Awesome ty
Hello I’m a newcomer and I was wondering how I could join a campaign
I would also help you here
So as a level two wizard, you would also have a total of 8 spells in your spellbook, all of those being 1st level spells.
Other than that, razorwing explained it well. I'd add another example though: You can always cast a spell you have prepared, as long as you can pay a slot for it. So with three 1st level spell slots, you can cast a proper "leveled" spell a total of three times, choosing from any of those prepared spells each time you want to cast. I say this explicitly because lots of new players sometimes get confused and think it's vancian casting, which is like precasting everything at the start of the day...
You could also check other places like reddit, or Roll20
What is roll20
it's a virtual tabletop some people like to use for their games
it's a digital board where you can put tokens and use the digital VTT tools
For example, on a VTT, you can have infinite trolls instead of needing a separate Troll minifigure for each troll you want to put on the map, hypothetically.
Hiyah, been wanting to learn D&D for ages and just now decided to try the discord.
The pinned messages in this channel should be plenty to get you started!
Safe to assume I should try and play for awhile before I learn to DM? I tend to be good with numbers and strategies but I'm not a very creative story teller atm
Some folks get started as the DM without playing first and take to that well. Others prefer to get experience playing. There's no wrong way in this case.
Appreciate the input! Is find a game the best bet to join a gaame or is there a differing channel recommended for newcomers?
Nope, #find-a-game is the spot to start your search!
Much appreciated
I'm super, super new to DnD but interested in joining a campaign + playing on a regular basis. I'd really appreciate any resources to help me prepare for participating in a game since I'm a bit lost figuring things out on my own. Thanks! 🫶
See the pinned messages in this channel!
is there any groups in the find a game category open for new level 1 players that haven't started their campaign. i've been searching for one but cant seem to find one that suits my interests. granted I haven't played D&D so I'm not entirely sure what my interests are in a campaign as I haven't gotten the feel of it yet.
Even if a group doesn’t specifically say that they are newcomer friendly, they more than likely will be
If you want to just give 5e a try, you could google your local gamestores/librarys to see if they have any Adventures League groups
Plus, there are tons of folks who post in the LFG channels who don't otherwise engage with the server, so they probably won't see your question. You can always look elsewhere.
There's no shortage of options online, to say nothing of in-person avenues like Para mentioned.
I really dont know if there are any D&D groups where I am, but ill look and see if I cant find any. When I say im new I have no idea what you meant by 5e. there are a few abbreviations I have no clue what their meaning is. Thanks for the insight and help ^^
5e is the current edition of the game
What all game mediums should a newcomer prep? I made a DnD beyond account, but I also see mentions of Roll20, Owlbear(?).
You don't need to prep anything really as a player with a Roll20 account, but I guess you could sign up for one.
Generally the DM has to worry about prepping things. At most, you as a player may have to sign up for a platform such as a virtual tabletop, which would likely be simple and ideally free. I don't think you need to be proactive on that score.
Just making sure, wouldn't wanna join a group just to stall everyone as I make new accounts or gather resources. Thank ye
When you join the DM will probably tell you what to do/get. If they're using Roll20 then they will to you get have a Roll20 account.
Games don't happen instantly. Even once you get accepted to one, there's scheduling and such, so likely registering for whatever account(s) would be "homework" of sorts even before the first session happens.
There's usually a session 0 where the DM sits down with all of the players to prepare them before the adventure/campaign starts.
#find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
Wait it’s that easy to find a game online?
There’s plenty of people looking, and new games available daily.
There are lots of options for finding online games, but I don't know if it's easy. You still got to be sure you're compatible and such.
But it will still likely take patience and diligence to find one that works for you.
Finding a good table is like dating. You'll get rejections, ghosting, drama, etc. but eventually you'll find "the one." (I'm saying this as a married forever DM).
How do I show that I want to dm
hi
Hello
Do you have a campaign you want to run?
I usually run one shots but I can also do I long campaign
You could post in #looking-for-players. Follow the instructions in #find-a-game. If that's not what you're after, then maybe you could explain more specifically what you mean by showing that you want to DM.
How do I post in looking for players
Read through #find-a-game and follow the instructions there.

Thanks undyingnoob
does anyone have a good online d20 dice link
i worded that terrribly jfkajkf
If I need digital dice I find google's dice roller is alright https://g.co/kgs/F2826A
alrighty
Thanks
That’s a lot to read
I downloaded dnd basic rules
im trying to use roll20 and am i allowed to make tokens smaller than a single grid piece?? because an entire grid cube is 5x5 feet and characters arent that big so...
characters occupy those 5x5 foot spaces though
I'd suggest checking with Roll20's support forums
yeah but what if i wanted multiple characters within the same 5x5 space?
You stack them?
Anyway this channel is for supporting new to D&D players and is not meant to be Roll20 support
The rules are very against multiple creatures occupying the same space.
The only exceptions come with things like a creature made entirely of Air or Fire, such as the respective Elementals.
oh sorry i wasnt sure if it overlapped or not, my bad!
We have #third-party-tools-archive which would be a better fit - but again, this server is not really a Roll20 support forum and you'll likely get better help from their own support channels.
I just joined a dnd club at university yesterday and we are all new to the game besides one player, I’ve got my own dice and a copy of the players handbook. I’m looking forward to doing my first campaign
Hi! I just finished BG3 and I loved it! I was thinking of playing D&D for a while but that already convinced me, I got the player's handbook and I am ready to get into this hobby, but I got no friends interested on joining me, anyone willing to give this novice some advice? or any group willing to adopt a new player? ;D btw I loved the bard!

Just be aware that BG3 did a lot of adaptation as far as the rules go
Yeah - based on 5th edition rules but with tweaks to make it a good video game.
such as elemental effect areas, the specific scaling of how levels work, monsters having levels, a bunch of new mini conditions, so many magic items and having a magic item slot for each part (boots, head, gloves, etc) rather than attunement slots, a lot of things.
Got it! I have to finish the player's handbook as well as other recommended books
That and the games usually have NPC party companions. Finding a group of real people for the TTRPG is quite different.
I joined a table top club at my highschool and the teacher who is supervising or running it posted some stuff on the google classroom, but it's for 2nd edition. I already asked some friends that are familiar with DnD, but they told 2e is a completely different game from 5e. So can someone help me make a character for 2nd edition?
#dnd-elder-editions would help you out there. But make sure to confirm with the teacher about the edition, when the rules and such came out
The PHB is really all you need to familiarize yourself with as a player.
just check first if it's dnd 2e or pathfinder 2e
The first page on the PDF I was given says Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. I'm not sure if that's what you wanted? I think pathfinder is a different game, I'm not sure?
2E AD&D. You want to head on over to #dnd-elder-editions for help.
This channel primarily deals with 5E.
Yeah no that is dnd 2e
I'm really having a hard time getting into DND, but I love the concept. Beingb that that is the case I created a game based off the idea that takes much less time but still has all of the core principles.
hey trying to get into dnd again its been awhile since i played and im no longer up to speed
Reread the free Basic Rules.
Join a campaign and let the dm explain them to you
Or read the rules again so the DM can do other things (make their lives easier if you do some homework)
I’m new and looking for someone to take me in as a newb, looking to play seriously but under the age of 18
Check out #find-a-game
Tried, been looking for a dm for awile but never found anyone that would allow playing with someone under the age of 18
Keep looking. Games get filled up quickly.
Check out other D&D-related Discord server's LFG channels (most D&D Youtubers have their own Discord servers). Facebook and Meetup have local D&D clubs and games.
Also, check out your local hobby stores.
Alr thanks, mainly looking for an online based group and don’t really know where to start
I'm looking at getting involved to DnD, is reading the beyond website for basic rules enough? or should I be getting some kind of ruleset book to get started?
the basic rules are what they say on the tin, the basic rules
The PHB and DMG are the 'base' rulebooks (as is the Monster Manual for monsters, that book being 99% for DM usage), but the basic rules contain all classes but Artificer, at least 1 subclass for each of the 12 classes, enough spells to play the casters, and etcetera.
So I should be getting the Players Handbook and reading through that as well before trying to join a group?
no
Start with the free basic rules. If you like the game, then consider investing in the players handbook
the basic rules are plenty to start
alrighty, cheers!
If disintegrate removes all hp from you, you are basically dead right? I was looking at 'pile of dust' meme
Yep, pretty much!
If the damage from the spell reduces a creature to 0 hit points, instead of knocking it unconscious, the creature is instead reduced to dust (and thus killed without being able to try rolling death saving throws)
Hi. I am trying to make a character and I have no idea how to actually do that. I know I have to pick a race and a class and come up with a good backstory and stuff, but all the stats and spells and abilities are completely incomprehensible to me. Please help
Have you read the first chapter of the free basic rules? It walks through character creation step by step.
Here's the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules

is there a way to tell if a group allows minors?
kk thanks!
May I ask which channel is used for Roll20? Not sure how to make a character
I just don't wanna treat all the other channels like tech support
I believe it’d be #third-party or #third-party-tools-archive
Tyvm
So I saw acouple of things I wasn't so sure about yesterday, something about UA in relation to character creation? And I'm not sure what subclasses are
UA content is kind of like beta test content. It's safe to assume your DM probably would allow you to run it, but you can always ask. They can sometimes be fairly janky because of it!
A subclass is kind of like a specialization for a class. For example, Druids get both the Circle of Dreams subclass and the Circle of the Moon subclass. Dreams makes them better at healing, while Moon makes them into shapeshifting masters.
what stat would you use for roll for business, investments, trade-know-how etc?
pure intellect check?
No
Intelligence Deception
Bard and charisma, deception too, yea, snake oil salesman
what about figuring out in what to invest or what business to buy?
Crystals? Are you really trying to start a Mary Kay in your campaign?
Are you gonna ride around in Pepto pink carriage?
our campaign went from being adventurers to trying to take over Amn
That doesn't mean you have to be an awful PC
why am I being an awful PC?
If your PC would be an awful person, it's an awful PC
I firmly disagree with that statement
Characters and players are two separate things
I have honestly no idea what you're on about or how is it related to my questions.
I didn't say they're an awful person, to be fair
You literally just implied it
I’m having trouble figuring out why wanting to do sale and trade would make an awful PC.
In Middle Ages, bartering was a common practice because of poverty, people didn’t have the money to buy stuff but they had the skills to make products people wanted
No, I clearly said PC for a reason, I've played awful PCs in games, literally did the opposite of what I would do in real life, but never went to MLM levels, that's a level of evil I won't do
I still don’t understand why trading and selling makes someone a bad person
I think youve jumped to a few conclusions there, nunya.
OK, I'll just go to the other channel because frankly this is the weirdest conversation I had in a while 😄
Yeah it’s kind of odd.
Trading and selling doesn't at all, snake oil salesman, selling essential oils to dying people/characters, is a whole different level
That’s not what was mentioned
“Snake oil salesmen” came from you. Not the others.
They were referring to the business of taking loot into town and selling it to people for a profit
Swords, armor, magic stuff
Average adventurer thing
If I were the DM I’d probably go for some kind of history check to know or track prices. DC would be determined based on what you already know or what information you may have already.
I wouldn’t jump conclusions about anything, especially if you don’t know the full context of the situation
I think that would be appropriate both for thinking up investments right? I mean history deals with all kind of useful, practical knowledge.
Trading/Economic business transactions:
You tell the DM what your character would like to do.
The DM decides what skills and rolls are appropriate, what the Difficulty Challenge is (DC), if it's an opposed roll (e.g. the NPCs roll against your roll), and then decicdes the impact.
Yup. It’s not particularly fleshed out and the economy in 5e is all kinda of wonky, but yeah I’d primarily focus on intelligence for knowing and setting prices, followed by charisma for making the actual sale or deal (bartering).
There isn't a lot of detailed rules for investments/banking/trading. Maybe the Aquisitions Incorporated book has some additional tools.
Generally D&D doesn't focus on the economic side of things.
It'd certainly be beyond the scope of this channel
Acq inc has a entire section about building a business and brand so might be worth a look
Yeah this is certainly moving beyond newcomer questions
Depending on the situation, either an Investigation(Intelligence) check or an Insight(Intelligence) check
Insight because knowing what other people want and when demand would rise for a specific item would be critical in trade and it seems more accurate to use Insight for that
@trim blade That question, and the ensuing conversation, isn't within the scope of this channel, as stated by myself and another moderator
alright
If you want to continue it, please move to a more appropriate channel. #dm-discussion would be ideal
didn't catch that sorry
s'all good
The first chapter of the free basic rules (check the pinned message) actually goes through step by step the process of creating a character.
Check that out first and work with that (also check the Handbook Helper videos if that helps).
If you have a specific question, we can help answer that.
Hi, so I am struggling to find some DnD sessions in my city Prague, since the one I went to isn't doing well with my schedule. Are there other websites that can help me search for some?
#looking-for-players and #looking-for-community may help. Also read #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels here.
There's also Demiplane and Roll20 (websites) that have LFG (Looking for Game) features.
Hello, I'm looking for a party
I'm a complete newb looking for hobbies to pass time with (due to work related injury)
My mastery of the English language is high and I learn fast
I made the character based on some preexisting preferences but am willing to change it and adapt to party needs
Anyone noob tolerant hosting beginner suitable campaigns?
Check #find-a-game
I made this guide (#third-party-tools-archive message) full of options to search for in-person games, which I understand doesn't apply to you, as well as online ones.
Hi Everyone I’m currently building a dnd game board my first ever one but struggling to find anywhere to buy scenery and bits like skulls, trees, broken weapons, boats etc from does anyone know any site that sells these types of things and bits like grass effect etc any help would be amazing
As a Dm, I don’t have to do anything when I tell my players they’ve leveled up right? Lmao
Maybe try #non-dnd-topics or #dnd-minis?
Thanks sorry 😞
Not really you might wanna help them level up if they are new players to dnd
I’m the newest one it’s an interesting scenario
Oh your probably good then
Hey guys, for Passive Perception do you add your Proficiency bonus to it or do you just use the baseline of your Wisdom?
how many rounds would a 1 hour spell last?
If you're proficient in Perception, yes. Otherwise no.
10 rounds in one minute. 600 rounds in one hour.
How do I determine which skill a proficiency with a particular type of weapon would be? Or is it based off of class?
Your class and background determine what skills, tools, armor, and weapon proficiencies you have.
So if they are proficient in a weapon, and their highest modifier is their strength. They would apply their strength modifier?
Their proficient with glaives
So let's take a fighter - they have proficiency in simple and martial weapons.
They’re*
A glaive is a martial weapon so a fighter can use that without issue and add's their proficiency bonus in the attack roll.
I guess I’m trying to determine what the proficiency bonus would be
if a character is proficient in a weapon, they add PB bonus and their attack stat modifier. What that stat is depends on the weapon (and sometimes can be modfied by specifc features)
The Proficiency Bonus is based on your class level — all characters have +2 at level 1.
your Proficiency bonus is based on your character level
Oh dope! Thank you
Level 1-4: +2
level 5-8: +3
etc. you can see it on the table for every class
Look at your character's class table.
Thank you guys so much
Just to be sure, you only apply the proficiency bonus to the attack roll, not the damage right?
Right.
The weapon determines which ability is used. Consult the weapons table for their properties
for an astral monk, is widsom genuinely the only stat that matters?
Dex is major as well. The class list (https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes) includes what each needs as their Primary Ability (or Abilities).
Unarmored defense is Dex+Wis, so those definitely matter, and then you should also be able to use dex mod for your attacks
Also constitution for health
hello im new to this can someone teach me some tips
Depends, how much do you know and what are you hoping to learn?
Oh ok so this is where the newcomers come okay hi I'm new just joined a few seconds ago
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Yes
just enough to play a game with friends
Well, this is the channel if you're new to D&D and are confused with some things. Feel free to ask questions.
Well remember that is a group game of collective storytelling, don't worry about optimizing or comlpicating characters, and always remember to have fun! Any more would need to be more specific
People keep talking about a gunslinger class does it acutally exist?
No
Oh Ok then
Which would depend on the setting
like it would need to be the wild west or something
Where do we go for character creation
#character-discussion if you want feedback on your character.
We can help you with the basics here tho
Ok um I'm new to d&d a little bit I tried doing a d&d session with a group of friends of mine but they told me after reviving me the first time in the game that I was no longer allowed to be brought back into the game after I died again and I was told by someone who used to play d&d a long time ago that you usually allowed to be revived at least seven times is that true
What? That's not normal for D&D 5th edition.
Not unless that was the expectations laid out by the DM and group beforehand
Or in the case you fail all 3 death saving throws and no one has the tools to bring you back.
But different groups play differently so...
There is no limit to the number of times a character could be raised/resurrected in 5E (other than the number of diamonds required for those spells...).
I thought so...
The one that I told you about that played d&d a long time ago said that he thinks that my group voted me out and just told me that they couldn't revive me because they didn't want me to play anymore
Not only that but the guild Hall that they were in basically got turned into a Star Trek ship right after I died
So I don't know if that was normal or not
😅
Um, okay...
I'm guessing that's not normal is it lol
Sounds like a group failed to openly communicate with each other.
Yeah....
Probably for the best you left that table.
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Have you read up on the rules?
i have played a little
Ahh, well if you are comfortable with the rules already, I'd suggest checking out one of the LFG channels. Sorry for pointing you here first.

Role-playing is like writing a character for a story except you take the character and impersonate them.
ya so that website still didnt help tho
Hey there, I've been reading some light novels recently and I'd like to get into D&D.

Character Sheets
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Still hasn't figured out DnD after reading all those rules bruh
Make character (using DND beyond might be the easiest way)
Role play by describing your characters actions and saying what your character would say
Combat rules actually have a lot going and change based on class but here we go:
-You get one action (Most attacks and spells are this)
-A bonus action (certain attacks/abillities/spells)
-And movemennt dictated by race+class
-And you fight things that your dm throws at you by saying what your character will do
Wassup im kinda new to DnD and wanted to try it does anyone have advice on how to start for a noob lol
start at #looking-for-players and join a campaign!
Also, you may look into character creation and build a character/get some ideas ahead of time, as mentioned above DND beyond might be the easiest @white folio

Aight bet thanks !
in dnd beyond how do i select my thunder gauntlets to have ht eenhanced weapon infusion
Might need to use the website version, i think the mobile gets wonky with infusions
yeah im on the website
but i dont see an option for thunder fists
gauntlers
in beyond its listening thunder gauntlers as a melee attack not a melee weapon
They’re part of the armour
They aren’t a seperate weapon
If it’s listed as a melee attack that’s what it should be
It’s a melee attack granted by your armour
Oh wait yeah how to infuse
Umm #ddb-support
Sorry
If an elf is +2 to DEX and Dark Elf is +1 to CHA.... does that mean when creating a dark elf you get both or just +1 CHA
Both.
Do you guys know about a DnD oneshot to teach beginners ? I wanna show a friend how dnd works and do a little solo adventure. Maybe yall know a well prepared mini adventure.
Wild Sheep Chase is a good introductory one-shot
That looks adorable but i cant finde a mentioning about how many players are recommended. And when checking the CR Rating it seems to be for roughly 3 players.
Do you think its fine to just drop Monster AC, HP and Damage ? to balance it out ?
The game is designed for 3-5 players, so if an adventure doesn't state, assume that many
And there's no need to change anything
They're also hoping to do it as a solo adventure.
There are free to use solo adventures on Dmsguild But you can also use sidekicks- NPCs with simplified classes that can accompany a hero, to help balance things out. You or the player can control them. They're in Tasha's but there is a UA (playtest) version you can use.
Is there summoning magic in d&d?
Yes, there are spells and game abilities that let you summon other creatures
What exactly are you trying to say?
Nothing
Just saying you could just say "yes" when I asked there
But thanks for telling me about summoning
That was not the correct channel for your question
If you want to see examples of how summoning works in D&D, look up the spells Find Familar or Find Steed
Ok...
I actually didn't know up until recently that there are apps for dnd now. I'm still kind of shocked 😂 had I'd known I'd haven't have taken a 3 year break
What app?
dndbeyond
As a Player Character, be careful with overuse of summoning spells, your DM may have rules in place to modify them (and many do)
That's a bit beyond the scope of this channel
I know
This channel is for the basics, so there's no need to get into "DMs might not allow this" or "DMs might have that house rule"
I never played any campaign or anything so I'm just trying to make cool characters
what classes are you going for, tony
In fairness, a DM modifying how written rules work would, ideally, tell the player ahead of time. That doesn’t really change how the rules work as written though.
Really I never thought about it
For my demon character I was thinking a sorcerer using like pink flames and that thing that I don't know name but it's like unofficial magic
there were a couple classes I didn't completely understand. specifically related to societial stuff. I get haunted one is like ptsd so I based my backstory on it. but I don't understand sage and acolyte
The second is a paladin but he uses a sword to summon white shinigamis from flames
For first campaigns I wouldn't dip too deeply into homebrew stuff.
I created a bard.
that sounds super cool. and that's where imagination comes into play
i made a cleric which my backstory is someone rolled a 20 to convert me 💀
I'm a folk hero.
I made a Eladrin Elf rogue/Druid. I wanted to base any magic around animals or defense and mainly use hand and ranged weapons
That's sounds cool
she's a haunted one so I based her backstory around trauma. which is assuming haunted one means ptsd
My character is cursed.
parents didn't like that she showed magic outside of the normal elf magic. tried to abuse her to keep her powers and gifts hidden, didn't work and she ran away at 16
How can I lift that curse?
I have a similar character in my head. I never really take any of my creations on paper except doodles
I slightly based my characters backstory off my own haunted past 😂😂 to be completely honest
Bro
do you know what the curse is? sorry we didn't see your message right away bro
You just say random things
yeah
Hm
I' dunno.
Can we go back to talking about the characters?
#find-a-game Can help you find games to join.
For a lot of character questions it will come down to the game you join and the DM's choice.
Making characters before joining a game is fine, but you may need to change the character to fit the game you join, and more situational questions such as 'Can my character get this?' or 'How do I break this curse' are going to be questions for your DM.
People can talk about whatever they want
My character is chaotic neutral, I would almost use the fact I'm cursed to my advantage. are you lawful good?
Because I broke your discussion.
We can answer more generic questions, like we can say that there is a 'remove curse spell'. But beyond that it's up to the story you and your DM want to tell.
no don't be sorry! I just missed your message 🙂
Nah don't worry
Lawful good.
for example my character was cursed that i have to put myself on the line to save a friend. ALL THE TIME. so i kind of used it to help people gain my trust. Lawful Evil.
I would talk to whoever your DM is but yes a cleric in theory could cure it
He had a change from chaotic evil.
woah
How do you say?
big change
I usually go for Lawful Neutral.
Vibes the most with me.
thats very fair
say Mine was cursed with poison skin or some random thing. I could use my poisonous touch to my advantage as an attack. but I could also use it on my party chaotic neutral
I'm chaotic neutral in real life. so it vibes best with me
my luck would be though I'd injure myself 😂
Which is the most balanced alignment?
Alignment doesn't affect balance
i'd probably be Lawful neutral Irl
What do you mean by 'balanced' here?
It's just how you describe your character
Neutral.
Then true neutral.
yeah
When it comes to alignment, your main concern should be making sure your character isn't disruptive to the game
Ok.
My passive perception is pretty good 😂
whats the most fitting alignment for a barbar? Chaotic Good?
Yesss.
I would actually say yeah
barbarian
Barbarians hate magic. lol
Alignment is an RP guideline. You don't have to stick to it and it rarely interacts with mechanics (there are a few items that can only be used by good or evil characters), and in general is basically giving an abstract description of your PCs values.
Heh
Not in 5e. Barbarians can use magic and even be magical.
The goal is the same, but the philosophy differs.
Some barbarians might, but that's an individual choice.
Be back.
Does anyone know Fritz Lieber's Fafhrd?
Technically yes, but D&D does have rules. It's usually 'anything within reason' and the DM has to okay 'rule of cool'. Trying to abuse that rule or relying on it too much isn't always a good idea. Being reasonable helps.
Just asking
Vaguely, yep. Never actually read any Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser.
Cuz I don't really have the time nor motivation to read all the rules
Communication between DM and players is paramount in these things.
And just trying to know in a short time I have to learn from people
There is an expectation as part of playing the game that you read the rules
You can do anything, but bad choices have their consequences.
Having an idea of the basic combat rules, and skill checks can help a lot. It's okay not to know all of them and learn as you go, but that's also putting a lot on your DM.
New Players don’t have to. You can rely on your DM. Just ask questions and have fun.
I will read them
Everyone at the table has a responsibility to keep the game moving smoothly, and that includes having at least a basic understanding of the rules
I will
I wouldn't do this, new players should try and read the rules rather than placing additional burden on the DM
Yeah, good and decent roleplay.
I'm just like a "house wife" now
So no time
Even if it's just 'I can roll a d20 + this skill to try and do this if my DM says I can roll' or just a general idea of combat.
The DM (and other players) will help with the rules in your typical game, but expecting them to fully carry you is a bit unreasonable
Nah
Be back.
Players have the responsibility to have at the very least, an idea of how the game works
My friend really likes d&d and I'm trying to learn so I will be able to play with her and spend more time
She's more distant now
The two key chapters to at least give a read over are:
Ch. 7: Using Ability Scores
Ch. 9: Combat
That's enough to really get you started
When I DM, if I announce the game is “New Player Friendly” this is usually what I mean. I may be an exception though.
Oke
That might be what you mean by 'new player friendly'
Relying solely on your other players and DM to help you follow the rules without even reading them will probably cause a lot of frustration.
Would advise against such a course of action.
Fun comes first in playing. Fun and Joy.
But it's a bad idea to teach newcomers that's what the term means or what to expect
The DM is literally playing the role of every other NPC, as well as the narrator and story-writer. Sure, asking about rules is fine, but relying on your DM to explain every rule is just unfair
I won't play with anyone until I will read them. I don't want to be a burden that slows the game
As a newcomer, the [Basic Rules[(https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules) are the best place to start
It's fine to encourage players to trust their DMs and not feel like they need to read all the rules before ever playing, but I would advise against encouraging 'I don't want to read any rules and just do whatever'
"You don't quit playing, because you get old. You get old because you quit playing."
You don't need to 'learn' Ch. 1: Step-By-Step Characters as that section is basically a walk through for making a character. Just follow the instructions and you should have a level 1 character good to go
I have one character card that I made in d&d beyond
Chapters 2-6 only matter while making your character and are reference sections
Path 2 of the Basic Rules, (Playing the Game) is the most useful part
Be back.
I just don't have time to learn it from reading and now I ask things
When I will have time I will read everything and play my first game
I'm going to get groceries
You don't have to read the basic rules back to front- or even everything.
I don't think anyone's really read everything. It's perfectly fine for new DMs and players to just go with what feels right in the moment, and then look up a rule later if something feels off, and in general you look things up as it becomes relevant.
But you should at least put some effort into understanding how your own character works.
I will
Cya
One thing that prevents DMs from becoming DMs is the stress that they have to know everything, including all the spells and classes and rules, before ever DMing. And they don't either- DMs should also be able to rely on their players to help remember how things work- especially the players own character
Hey there, can someone tell me how it feels to play DnD through DDB campaign? It certainly does feel different than actual meet-up, but I just feel like not coming out. Although it does look fun at least
D&D Beyond is just a tool, do you maybe mean playing online (not everyone who plays online uses D&D Beyond)
Ello, I played Dungeons & Dragons with a few friends years ago, and playing Baldur's Gate 3 just kind of reminded me of the entire thing. I don't really know how the game works or how to start out, but I really enjoyed playing it the first time and I'm looking to learn all about it so I can experience it again. I don't have my friend to guide me now so I'm a bit lost. Where do you guys recommend for a total newcomer to learn about it? It's a bit daunting.

i might.. just really bored
1d4 dices are sliding a lot (on any surface) how do I actually throw them so I see them rotating?
I’m not sure what kind of d4 you have, but maybe get a dice tray? Portable ones that snap together tend to be inexpensive.
Howdy
i was having trobule with puting in me charater specs on d&d beyound based on a sheet that i made
What kind of trouble?
like it not showing the opitens that i put on my sheet
hi
In order to access content on DDB you must actualy own it, in digita form, through DDB
So if you borrowed some books to fill out a physical sheet, those materials arent just going to show up. Ddb is a digital library, you must purchase content on them for access
hello Im looking for a group in need of a new player, I played 2nd edition for a few sessions many years ago and was hoping i could join a party that is willing to sit down and walk me through the steps necessary to play with the party
See the instructions in #find-a-game for using the server’s Looking For channels.
Have you read the rules for 5e? Its…very much not 2e
no, I have not, I was going to read the rules once I was sure what edition the party would be playing... Im out of my element, pardon my ignorance
I’d recommend learning the current rule set as 5e is the version in play in 2023
and this server is primarily for that
What makes this game really popular? Even though this is just an imagination reading game
Like an imaginary game that reads a book
Its collaborative, improv storytelling
The fun is the experience with other people going on an adventure
it's fun 😎 /hj
Books are linear. D&D isn't linear. Players can have their characters try to do almost anything, even possibly changing the course of the adventure the DM hadn't planned on.
- It's collaborative; you get to create an experience with your friends
- It's not just imagination, the rules lend the game tactical depth
- It has stakes; because the game balances rules and roleplay, you can become invested in the characters and what might happen to them
I’ll be honest I’m struggling to find a group to play with. I’ve been watching the channels in the discord for three day but I can’t seem to find one that feels like I’d fit in.
I’ve never done D&D so personally I don’t know what my interests are in a campaign or what I’m looking for. I have never really had friends so socially I’m very nervous and insecure as well easily weirded out by certain things or phrases. I want to try D&D to try and tern the table around and fill the hole of loneliness and find friends I can have fun with, chat with and play something we all enjoy or can in general play.
hello i have a few questions
im new to dnd but ive been wanting to play in a campaign for ages i just have nobody to play with irl cuz my nerd friends keep saying yes lets do it and we never do it and the rest are not nerds at all
so i wanted to start here
i made a character

also how do i join a campaign

I'm new too, never joined a campaign.. but i think the best way to overcome that is just going into it and have fun, I'm sure everyone here would be happy to help new players have fun and teach them the basics.. D&D is very versatile and rules can sometimes be broken.. the only role you have to do as a player is to play your character sincerely and enjoy, and dont forget that the people you're playing with have been new players at the past too.
Hi! I was wondering does this server have like other lenguages channel or something like that or is it purely english?
English only.
gotcha, thank you! have fun guys 👋

Hola

Do spells ignore resistance?
Spells' damage types are affected by the appropriate damage resistance/vulnerability.
A fireball spell is affected by a creature's fire resistance/immunity, for example.
No, when you take damage, you reduce your HP by the amount of damage taken. Resistance reduces damage taken by half, but only for the specific damage type(s) you are resistant to.
To go along with resistance, there’s also immunity, and vulnerability: Immunity negates damage entirely, and vulnerability doubles it. You cannot benefit from resistance or suffer from vulnerability twice on the same damage.
Hello everyone! Just recently had my first dnd experience and it was a blast, haven't tried online but hopefully I will gain experience playing. Does anyone have any tips on how to find a group and how playing online varies from playing irl? Many thanks
Differences online is that audio/video quality is important and there are lots of tools and apps and browser extensions that make playing online feel like an experience. Looking up resources and rules are at the tips of your fingers and generally as a player online is much the same. I host a weekly in person and online parallel game and the online one is much easier as a DM. I can reuse anything I create in a digital space.
An example is clicking a button so show my party the artwork/appearance of an NPC they are talking to but in person I have to print something or have them in a tablet and show them the art…stuff like that. Really makes the DM workload easier.
Hi guys, i've been a fan of DnD for a while but never had anyone who shared my adoration or anywhere for me to learn more about it untill recently. I don't really know how to get started so any advice is greatly appreciated!

Would grappling be a bonus action?
Would it take 2 actions to grapple then attack someone
You can do it with the Tabern Brawler Feat.
Grapple is an special action, you can use the Attack action to make a special melee attack, a grapple. If you’re able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them.
To do anything as a bonus action, you need a rule that lets you.
The only bonus action available to all characters is Two-Weapon Fighting.
Three days is not that long to be looking. It can take weeks or even months to find a group with aligning schedules and styles. If you’re only searching here, you could widen your search to other sites and Discords. This guide has a lot of options to investigate: #third-party-tools-archive message
how does wizard leveling work to learn new spells?
You get to choose two new spells when you level.
Wizards learn new spells from the wizard spell table when they level. It's pretty much the same as how any other character class learns new spells when they level...
BUT Wizards can also copy spells they find into their spellbook whenever they have the time, supplies, and opportunity. After a complicated discussion, we determined that to copy the spell into their spellbook, the Wizard has to first qualify to learn and prepare the spell. But they can then write extra spells that they wouldn't have otherwise learned into the spellbook.
how does a cantrip formula work?
What do you mean by formula?
i've seen that term thrown around but i dunno what it means for 5e
A cantrip is a spell that a caster can use without expending their limited spell slots.
oh wait i read about it just now
yeah supposedly you can swap one of your 3 main cantrips after a long rest if you have that formula for the cantrip on your spellbook
I'm not familiar with that ability, but the game is full of subclasses I've never tried.
Cantrips are ingrained into your head without the need of a spellbook. You normally can't swap cantrips out after a long rest.
Howdy everyone I’m chase. I played dnd once and fell in love with it. I recently picked it back up and would love to get back into this amazing hobby and universe. I’ve recently beat bg 3 and I have my own painted mini and a bunch of dice and expo maps 😂
by the way, what are archived unearthed arcana classes? are they for older versions of DnD or can you run them normally?
Unearthed Arcana were playtest materials for 5E.
If they didn't make it to a published book then WotC found it not balanced and not worth exploring further (see Mystic).
so anything that ain't in the books but is instead just in playtest version is unearthed arcana then? i was wondering because there was a wizard subclass for psionics, but that ended up becoming psi warrior for fighter, i was thinking of multiclassing psionics but now that i know that i think it's probably not possible
That is not accurate
There is no class called “psionics”
Unearthed Arcana stuff is test material, its not stuff you should be digging into as a new player
And i would avoid multiclassing as a new player- learn one class first and how to play
thats for when you are big brain understander of things
i have a question so if someone is armor class 17 and you roll to see if you attack and get 17 would you hit?
pretty sure
i mean that makes sense logicly right like you hit them with just the perfect amount of power to break through there defenses
oh ok thanks
If the total of the roll plus modifiers equals or exceeds the target's Armor Class (AC), the attack hits.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#AttackRolls
Im completely new to dnd and I made an autognome artificer armourer. Im thinking of getting the dm to kill off my charachter so I can swap to something else. Everyone playing is new and all of the mechanics are hard for me and the dm to handle. Any thoughts on this?
Artificer isn't a class I would recommend to a new player to D&D to start off with.
lotta stuff
Yeah. So far managing the mechanics of the subclass is the most difficult.
Artificer is legit for experienced players
Ok
probably a fighter or barbarian
Playing a barbarian seems fun from both a roleplay, and a combat perspective so i might try that.
mechanic light
Could keep the class and just be a 3 foot robotic barbarian lol
if you rage and hit well your being effective
I'd suggest doing any class. Paladin is a good one because it teaches you how to stay true to the character and play offensively and supportively.
ye
and being a giant crusader is also badass
Clerics are also broken ah hell bro
I've witnessed absolute slaughters watching clerics solo
Nah Grave Domain
LATHANDERS LIGHT KNOWS NO LIMIT
Grave Domain is hella good
You can literally reject death
Nobody dies fr
Except you if you're not careful

My poor small dragonborn grave domain cleric is too chaotic good for his own doing. He kept heading into the dungeon recently and setting off every trap. Our bard had to keep healing him and now he's got PTSD from traps ;-;

You can tell more stories about your characters on #tales-from-the-table
Hello.
I'm new to D&D, and would like to be involved in a game if possible. However, I don't know anyone in-person that would be interested in playing. Is there a way to play it online? Also, are you required to get super into character when playing? Or can you be more casual about it?
Online is quite common
Oh, and how does it work if you want to play with a completely different setting? Like say, Star Wars D&D. How do you go about doing that, with changing spells for example?
Most groups would be fine with lighter roleplay
You don’t. You play a different system that’s meant for star wars
Or sci-fi in general
There are plenty of other TTRPGs (tabletop roleplaying games) that cover other genres that D&D isn't made for.
There's been many Star Wars RPGs in the past.
What if you wanted to make your own? Your own setting, world, logic, etc?
then thats doable
Making your own setting is quite common, and is fine to do as long as you stick to the same genre
Homebrew setting is quite common but takes a lot of work.
i mean there are rules for just legit ass guns so you can get decently modern
Tho there’s better systems for that generally
wizard just pulls out a glock when hes expended all his spell slots
Past like early 1800s DnD doesn’t work very well at all
d20 Modern was a contemporary setting based on the 3.5E SRD ruleset.
Star Wars: The Old Republic video games were based on the d20 ruleset (which was the 3.5E SRD).
It's doable but again it takes a lot of work.
So where do I go about finding people to play with, and how exactly do we play together? Is there a game, website, bot for it?

so as far i have seen, a good chunk of spellcasters have charishma as their highest abillity score...does that mean they need to be talkative and stuff?
no
not necessarily
high charisma doesnt mean extroverted
it just means high self control and very persuasive/intimidating
and also stats != roleplay
theyre just numbers on a sheet
play the character how you want
Hello! was wondering if anyone is looking for a player! or where i might go to try and join a campaign
have a look in #looking-for-players
TY !
Wow
how long does a average campaign last
Adventures can last several sessions.
Campaigns can last a year or more (mine is been going on for 1.5 years and will probably last another 2.5 years).
thats the mean tho, not the median
I think it would be safe to say that a lot of campaigns don't make it to the end because various factors contribute to people leaving and the table falling apart.
I lost three players earlier (but got three new players to replace them).
oh damn so campaigns can last a long time should I wait till im in a more open spot to find a dm and start a campaign? ive pretty much only have one spot a week open for 3 to 5 hours
thats fine
as long as that spot is open consistently youll be fine
most campaigns run once a week for 2-4 hours
oh ok phew im pretty new to dnd ive been reading up on the rules and trying to prepare to try it out ive spent a lot of time making a character and thinking of a backstory that isnt overly dramatic long or common
nice
yeah I might be over thinking it a bit much tho its been like 2 ish months of preperation
whats the dif between a paid and unpaid dnd game like quality wise and which would be better for a starter
Paid games is where the DM charges per session.
ah is it like a more professional dm?
I guess. I don't know if they do it fulltime.
ah ok would you recommend it for a new player or would you recommend a free dm
¯_(ツ)_/¯
fair fair well thank you for answering my questions it is much appreciated
Depends on your budget.
ah I get disability pay because of injury when I was child so its not very much tbh
If you can play in person check your local game/hobby store. Also check lccal D&D groups on Facebook and Meetup.
ah alright should I bring my own dice/dnd gear with
If you want/can play online check out #find-a-game but also check other D&D-related Discord server's LFG channels (most of the D&D Youtubers have their own Discord servers). There's also D&D reddit groups and services like Demiplane.
alright ive been thinking about finding a game for awhile its just a little nerve-racking cause itll be my first game ive been trying to study up on a lot of the dnd info I have access to but ill defs check out some other servers my ideal situation would be to play with other new players so id feel like im not sticking out like a sore thumb
It depends entirely on the DM. Everything you can get from a paid DM you can get for free from an unpaid DM, but with paid DMs you’re allowed to sort of have expectations of a certain level of quality since you’re paying for a product.
ah alright so a paid dm has a bit more of a obligation to their party and what kind of campaign the party is looking for while a dm that isnt paid has a bit less of that obligation?
Exactly.
Now that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get everything you want from a paid DM just because you’re paying them, but it does mean that they’ll probably have access to tools and rulebooks to increase the quality of the game and will be less likely to blow off sessions since it’s part of how they earn an income
That being said, I play weekly with a friend who runs really high quality sessions on Foundry VTT with all kinds of custom integrations for different games like Savage Worlds or 5e.
I don’t pay a dime. Sometimes you just get lucky
oh ok so their more often equipped with more resources for better gameplay. So do you think I should try to find a paid dm or a regular one for my first dnd session
I would definitely start with free to help you build up your experience with the game first. That will help you to grasp what you do and don’t want out of play.
alright thank you very much one more question do you think I should find a game with other new players to learn with along the way or find one with experienced players to help me learn more as im getting more of a understanding of what im looking for
go free and many hate this advice but i give it anyways for newplayers play a pregen, read the character sheet specifically if you want to do roleplay, otherwise if you want dungeon delve aka hack and slash just make a character that you rely on stats
Some general words of advice:
Session 0 is a good idea to make sure everyone is on the same page, and to establish the tone and safety tools for the game. Don’t let DMs bully you into accepting things that make you feel unsafe or uncomfortable.
It’s okay to kick problem players out of games. If one player is becoming problematic, harassing people, vulgar or otherwise unfun to play with don’t feel you have to give them a pass on their bad behavior.
Try to remember that D&D is a game of pretend with your friends to have fun. There’s nothing to gain by cheating or demanding loot, just try to tell a good story and have fun with everyone at the table if you can.
pregen? and Im big into roleplay side of it I listen to a dnd podcast I want kinda a compaign like that. Also again thank you both very much for all the info
campaign*
Is there any good way to make a pandemic themed d&d campaign
Oh for sure. There’s loads of nasty diseases and curses in D&D.
pregenerated characters are characters that are ready to go with stats, background ect
Not every village or city will have strong clerics to cast curative spells on the population 24/7
ohhhhh I basically did that but made my own race and backround/backstory
You made your own race? What are they?
oh no not my own race their a half dwarf half elf with the stats of a dwarf cause otherwise itd be a bit too conflicting
I might just feel a lot of the gimmicks from pathologic works thematically like the houses of the town getting infected
that's awesome. one thing i know is true is, making characters is fun if you already know how to do it otherwise its a pain in the butt
I spent 3 hours on it and had to change my backstory because it was a bit too hardcore so I struggled a bit on that then the character description took me awhile to fully picture but im proud how they turned out
i dont know how to play, should i make a spreadsheet about my character, lore, etc. ?
i want to learn
have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
you generally use a premade character sheet for you character
Our first game went amazing. My son loved chatting to the goblin NPC and we had a quick and easy raft building puzzle that was accessible to a 6 and 10 year old. The final fight with a wrathbone was a good climax for the session , I used an iPhone app that made our hue lights pulse and flash during it for atmosphere, the youngest got a little scared by that, but he dealt the finishing blow so went to bed feeling powerful.
Hopefully that was the first game of many and it becomes a Saturday night ritual 😁
hey im really new to d&d and listen to podcast and played a little of baldurs gate 3 does anyone have a campain i could join to learn in?
id love to let you join mine but its homebrew and a lil different than forgotten realms
Can someone explain how to play dnd? Like what dices to use, what am I supposed to do if my character takes damage (I’ve seen people write something down on their sheet but I don’t really understand)
Generally, d20's are used for a majority of things. Damage dice differ on weapons and spells. If your character takes damage, 5e has limited options but there are reaction spells and actions to help with that.
i love ur pfp
Game basically comes down to standard action, bonus action, and reactions, all of which can be used once per round.
There's more detailed explanations but that's the simplest breakdown I can do at 4am, lol.
so what's the etiquette around character creation in dnd? do people make a new character for each campaign they join, specifically for that campaign, or are people allowed to bring in a pre-made character that can be adapted to fit a campaign? or is it a case-by-case thing?
Case by case, some DM's will appreciate or ask for a character idea. Some will want you to build the character specifically for their setting.
Best thing is have some ideas of what you want to play, and be flexible to the DM's setting.
But turning up with a full fledged character, that you are not willing to change or adapt is a bad look, either way.
yeah, i figured that much
the last part, i mean @_@
but thanks for the clarification
Yeah, I get you. If you are replying to an ad. They may tell you what they want in the ad, If not feel free to ask.
"Is character creation part of session zero, or you want me to make one beforehand?'
are there any other important character-related things to keep in mind? besides the obvious ones like, 'don't make characters with personalities that will actively derail the party' and stuff
They should also not be against going on whatever the adventure is 😛
that too
^Those two are the main ones, make a character that engages and interacts with the world. Everyone has an edgy character in their backlog, and they can be fun.
Edgy lone-wolf guy hiding in a shadowy corner can sound cool but it's gonna be a pain to have them work in a group and actually be motivated to go on the adventure with a party, which is basically what d&d is about 😛
how do i find groups to play with as beginner?
pretty sure there's a channel here for that?
yeah that
anyway, something i wanted to ask before, but is there any unique advantage to having a steed in combat without that one feat that buffs you up for having one? i forget what it was called
Mounted Combatant is the feat
As for without it, I think #dnd-rules would be the best place to ask what you get by being mounted 🤔
i see, thank you
Thank you 🫶🏼
Mfw I'm flexible but have a very specific idea I've been trying to find a game for after getting comissioned art after her first failed game, lmao.
I feel like there's flexibility though. Like, I've had a dm literally try to change the entire character, not just ask for a change of backstory and got pissed when I said no, lol.
Tried to force me to change class, race, and backstory, then got pissed when I said no. lmao.
Best tip I'd have, be flexible, but be willing to work "with" the DM as well.
One of the best games I ever had was the DM asking small changes to a fully fledged character, and we jammed a really good game.
was there a reason for changing the class? i'm not very experienced, i only really know dnd from my friends who play it avidly, but from my understanding you don't need to justify your class picks most the time
Iunno yo, it was odd, lmao. But yeah, as I said, my best advice is that good dnd comes from mutual give and take with the DM and players.
Even if you got a really cool idea you like, hear the dm out, and find a mutual ground you can both enjoy. DM's are players as well and have fun from the story telling and twists they can make.
so like a big group writing project
See? Now you are getting it!
DnD is just collaborative "Who's line is it anyway?" in all honesty, lmao.
I'm taking a nap soon but last tip I can give, there's a lot of good DnD Youtuber's as well who explain the system and builds. I listened to them like podcasts as a new player, lmao.
