I have just created my first character, but she feels all over the place... and just getting started in general is difficult.
You aren't wrong, it's a steep start, but it will get easier once you have a group going.
What makes you feel they are "all over the place"?
When i first started creating the character, i didn't have any idea of her as a fleshed out character and sort of just picked whatever i thought was cool and read up on a few articles whenever I'm stuck, but now it feels like she doesn't really have a specific field that she's focused on?
Well, she's probably level 1, right? Most of the specialisation will come later anyway. The only area where you can really "go wrong" with a Level 1 character is with ability scores.
What's the character?
She's half-elven ranger/wizard...
Advice: don't multiclass your first character.
Hi
Ahoy 🙂
Lmaoo, alright, i'll pick one
Do you know what campaign you'll be playing yet?
I like to build characters that complement the theme of the campaign.
unfortunately...no, what are campaigns?
The story you're playing through.
Whether that's a pre-made adventure, or one your DM has created.
You might like the Horizon Walker subclass, which is in Xanathar's Guide to Everything. It's a Ranger that specialises in teleportation magic. What spam is saying is that a ranger like that might fit in some adventures, but might not feel so appropriate in other stories.
If you go Ranger, you don't need to pick a subclass until later, so you can worry about that once you have played a bit 🙂
Horizon Walker especially may not fit with the theme of any given campaign.
I see, thing is, i haven't found a group to play with
What I'd recommend, then, is to build a few different characters.
That's okay. Getting to grips with character creation is good preparation.
Make a ranger, make a wizard, make something else.
Just a loose idea for each.
Then when you find a group, you can work with the DM to pick the best fit for that campaign and add any final details.
that's a good idea actually, i'll do that.
And you'll probably have an easier time making them feel grounded once you know more about the story ahead and the world they'll live in.
Question regarding Ready Action. Would it work in this context?: Player readies hes melee attack and it triggers after party member throws him onto an enemy.
Yeah, seems valid.
I would agree with permitting that. Ready action is very liberal in the interpretation.
Alright, thank you sm spam and jale, imma talk to my friend abt this.
Okay thanks for the quick reponses!
(Note that there generally aren't rules for throwing party members, though, so this already requires some DM dependency.)
In this case I will be DM'ing first time for my friends who are first time players, I am going over the information and this Ready Action left me a bit confused.
You've got the right idea for the Ready action itself. 👍
If your group has come together over BG3 where throwing craetures is common - yeah that's currently a non-covered scenario in 5e rules 😄
Haha not really, although we did all play BG 3
The player just needs a trigger (after thrown onto an enemy) and a response (make a melee attack), which they've got in this scenario.
Would anyone be interested in watching me and my friends post our d&d podcast that we are currently playing if so dm me and I’ll give more info 🙂
@oak marsh Not really the channel, if you want to promote your podcast, please use #dnd-advertisements
Okay
I am still confused about 00 0 on percentile dice and d10
Is it 0 or 100
How so I get 0-9 on it or 100
0 + 00 = 100
Otherwise, when not together, 0 and 00 both equal zero
0 + 10 = ten
1 + 00 = one
if you roll 00 on the 10s place, then 1-9 on the 1s place, then then number is 1-9. If you roll 0 and 00, then that is 100
the possible numbers for a d100 are 1-100 not 0-99
It's only when you roll 0 and 00 together that they don't count as zero, but instead 100
If you're still confused, you can always roll 1d100 on an online dice roller for simplicity!
correct
10-1 is 11
yep
Okay thanks
FWIW, that may depend on how your dice are actually numbered as well.
In my experience, it's rare to find a d10 that's labelled 0-9.
They're more commonly labelled 1-10 (and 00-90), in which case 90 + 10 = 100.
I mean if you think away the 1 on the 10 its the same thing
Wait what? I've never seen a d10 that has an actual number "10" printed on it before
what are some stuff i should ask the dm about during session 0
What are the things you, Snom, like or don't like about the game? Use those as a starting point to determine if your GM and you have similar wants and expectations. For instance, I as a player don't like an emphasis on combat (but I don't want none), I don't like games that are highly lethal, and I don't like people who refuse to communicate to solve problems. (This would be a biggie for me, actually: "How do you resolve conflict? Can you give me an example?")
Type, tone, and genre of game can also be worth sussing out, if they haven't been conveyed already.
Session 0 is a time for setting expectations, and establishing table norms. So, talking about what style of game you'll be playing, how difficult it will be, how much role play will there be, etc. Will this be a dungeon crawl, or wilderness survival, or a city to explore?
And then, its also important to make sure you talk about boundaries, or any possible things that might be forbidden in the game, like how comfortable are people at the table with romance? What about body horror? What about depictions of sensitive topics like divorce or abuse? You need to set those kind of boundires ahead of time, before you get in the actual game
Things you should ask the DM about during session 0 are damn near everything: are there any special rules for the game you need to know about, how does the group manage things like party balance/money/equipment/romance/horror/everything else, what does everyone like or dislike about D&D, oh by the way this is something I really can't stand, and so on.
Hey guys I’m new does anyone have any games going on today?
See #find-a-game.
Ok thanks
There are tons of guides online on session zero, so you might skim those and use those questions as a basis to guide your conversation with the DM (assuming those elements aren't specifically addressed).
hello everyone I want to start playing D&D with some friends. I have played some one shot games and one campaign with other friends before, but usually they lead me. I want to learn more and know what I am doing. Any suggestions where I should start? Any guidebooks you can recommend for beginners. Original books havve so much details I cannot understand right now. Is there anything less confusing to start with before I dive into the original books?
Video explainers like Handbooker Helper and WASD20's Rules School might be a good option.
thank you I will check them out right away
hello
fun
you on ddb
i have like 7 characters that arnt in use
cool
yeah thats most of my characters
I HAVENT even Made character yet I’m so confusedddd
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
I’ve got the name class and race but idk how the points work like strength and stuff like that
This is a lot of brain power
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t yet have a DM, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores, determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
i was actually gonna send a simplified version of that when it interrupted me
Please simplified version as my brain is not big 😭😭
Do you have a DM yet?
tl;dr just play a charisma class trust ;))))))
you can just roll 4 d6's and take away the lowest number and add up the 3 other numbers
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
I wouldn’t recommend rolling for stats until/unless you’ve talked to your DM.
true
Most DMs want to see the results of those rolls for themselves (if they even have you roll at all).
hi im trying to figure out how to find games to join i found the looking for dm thing but i cant post on it can anyone help??
#find-a-game has instructions for that.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
awesome thanks
A DM is the master of the game correct?
dungeon master
What class did you pick?
Warlock
WWWWWWWWW
it can also go as a GM Game master
The race is a fire genasi
i havent actually played a warlock yet
The Quick Build for a Warlock recommends this:
First, Charisma should be your highest ability score, followed by Constitution.
If you're using the standard array, your ability scores are 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8.
Idk what the constitution means
Bro my brain with this is so small😭😭
Constitution is the stat that determines how much HP you have
If you're following the recommendation, that just means write 15 next to Charisma, and 14 next to Constitution.
your general health and ability to fend off poison or extreme weather
I'd make Dexterity third, so a 13.
constitution is like how well you can survive conditions or status effects
And the rest you can pick in any order.
It’s like y’all are speaking in a big brain language 😭
haha
its SO fun you just repelling blast agonizing blast KABOOM and i havent even played a hexblade yet
☝️ Some of the links here might help if you're curious about any specific terms.
Do you have a character sheet already?
I assumed you do, buuuut... 😅
I’m making one
As I don’t have a printer rn so
But you do have the sheet itself in front of you, at least? Even if it's on a screen?
Yes
If so, you should see six boxes, probably along the top or down the left hand side.
Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma
Yes
Those boxes are what we're talking about.
You need to put numbers in those boxes.
If you want to keep it simple and use the Standard Array, the numbers you put are pre-defined. You can put them in any order you want, but the "best" order depends on your class.
For a Warlock, you probably want to put the biggest number (15) in Charisma, and the second-biggest (14) in Constitution.
That leaves 13, 12, 10, and 8 for the other boxes.
I'd put the 13 in Dexterity, personally.
yup charisma is our bread and butter and constitution is basically for your HP stat
But it's up to you.
Okay I put the numbers in da boxes
Cool
Now you need your ability modifiers.
Find your score for each ability on the left side of that table, then write down the number on the right side for that ability as well.
Actually, wait. Let's back up a sec.
What race did you pick?
Alright. In your race, you should see a section called Ability Score Increase.
I'm gonna assume you're using the older Genasi, in which case you'd see that section twice.
The first says that all Genasi get +2 to Constitution.
And the second says that Fire Genasi get +1 to Intelligence.
So add that to the numbers you wrote down before.
i.e. you should now have 16 for Constitution (14 + 2).
Okie
And now you can get your ability modifiers.
You don't add them to the number; write them down separately.
If you look up 16 on the left side of the table, for example, you'll see a +3 on the right.
So you'd write a +3 in Constitution as well.
Meaning you'd have something like 16 | +3
Ok
Once you've got that for all six abilities, you're done with that part of the sheet. ✅
I'd just leave experience blank until you talk to your DM.
If your group uses experience points and you're starting at level 1, you'd just put a 0 there.
But you may not even use experience points, so just leave it blank.
Ok
Alignment is described here. You'd basically just pick one of the nine options to describe your character.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Alignment
I wouldn't pick any of the evil options until/unless you've spoken with your DM and the rest of your group.
I Chose choatic good
thats usually what i do too
Never mind I’m going chaotic neutral
Heya all
Hi
How's it goin?
hi
good day everyone, I've heard great things about dnd, and would like to try it out, if I may ask, is there a book I can read anywhere with the information? I'm clueless otherwise how to start
players handbook
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.

thank you, I'll go check that out, my only knowledge of dnd is the cartoon
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Check out some of the links above if you're looking to get started with DnD!
thank you so much everyone, you're all too kind
your welcome
Was wondering when making a character should you write it down or is there a website or smtnn for that?
Either! If you check out that bot post a few messages up, there's a couple character sheet links in there.
You can use a paper character sheet, a PDF one, or a website like dndbeyond.com
(There's plenty of other options out there, too.)
Oh I didn't notice that I'm dumb xd
Cheers 🙂
Oh wow I just singed in on the website and Aparently I had already made a char lol
Hey out of curiosity I've been seeing a Lotta ads where people have to be higher levels when they start is there a way to change your chars level on the website or Is tht done by the dm or you in game or smthn?
On D&D Beyond, in the character editor, in the Class tab, there is a drop down box next to your class's name. Change that drop down to your new level to level up
Oooh whoops sorry
No need to appologize
hey yall im new and im wondering how often people play also i would love to play my first game with someone soon
Same lol
well im totally down if a dm wants to
i would love to! it been a while since i joined one
cool! ive never played so yall might have to bare w me lol
Are you asking how often does each individual person play D&D, or how often is there a campaign ran by someone in this server? Because most people play D&D once a week or once a month, but there are literally hundreds, maybe thousands of games in #looking-for-players, so you should be able to find something if you look
its okay! am sure you will do awesomly!
okay! it was more a question of a campaign then, i feel that would be the most fun to start out with but ty!!
My group plays once a week (if the session isn't cancelled like this week's) for about three hours.
okay cool, what day usually?
We play every Wednesday.
What should I do for equipment? Or do I pick gold? What is gold ?
That one honestly depends on the group. It tends to be weekends, since that's when most people are free, but scheduling is always the hardest part of playing!
Scheduling is the greatest D&D BBEG.
Gold is the money used in D&D worlds
So picking gold means you have to buy your own equipment rather than having it given to you for free
It's the aspiration of every Dread Lich to have powers comparable to contrasting life schedules
That's another question you'd typically ask your DM. Until then, I'd just stick with the starting equipment.
I Made my charater I did. it online
If it's alright to ask, if one of my characters dies in a campaign, am I allowed to still use them in a different campaign? Or would that be a no go
That's something only your DM can answer.
If you go to a different table that DM may ask you to roll a new character. They don't know if you legitimately got three 18s, and a couple Legendary magic items or not.
generally if you mean just using the concept yes totally
Well more of the characters themselves, idm if they're forced to start over from the beginning in another campaign if they die
like you may have to start them at lv1 no fancy things but there is no limit on reusing concepts and names and whatnot
yea yea thats completely fine
The concept is should be fine unless it doesn't fit into the new campaign setting.
different dnd games arent associated unless its a specific format or something
I would think that, aside from the AS reroll, you could just reuse the character in a different group. If its the same group and the same DM running a different campaign, they might decide that the campaigns are linked and the character is dead in both campaigns.
so yeah feel free to reuse OCs in as many unrelated campaigns as you feel like
Nice :D
As a forever DM I rarely get to play so I use the same female aasimar paladin of devotion in the different campaigns (at least the concept).
I am new here and want to play dnd so what do i do to start?

Thanks a bunch!
im practicing point buy by myself because why not, and i got 13 con 15 dex 16 wisdom 9 charisma 13 strength and 11 wis. for a monk is this the right selection of stats?
Mechanically speaking, Monks benefit the most from Dexterity and Wisdom. Consitution after those.
What does ONM VTT mean
Not sure about ONM but VTT is Virtual Table Top
Can I have someone see my back story and let me know if I can use my character in games?
You can share it #character-discussion if you like, but ultimately whether a DM accepts it in their own game is up to the DM.
Some might love a silly background, for example, while others might be looking for something serious.
I tried going a caracter like daredevil
Anyone have tips for developing a personality/backstory for a character? I have the race and class but have gotten stuck
Personally, I leave things fair bare bones and feel my way through a character as I play them.
I have a friend who does a mock terro card reading to help him build the skeleton of a personality/backstory
What’s a good starting adventure/campaign?
lost mines of phandelver
hi
The Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is a hardcover adventure designed for new DMs and players
If you just want to run a one-shot to get your feet wet, my favourite is the Breath of the Yellow Rose, as it has an excellent balance of combat, social and exploration encounters
hi
Thanks
Random question: do you roll again to maintain stealth when people are actively looking for you?
You roll your Stealth check once and your opponents roll their Perception check once.
If they're not actively looking for you, they use their Passive Perception check.
So i am new to making characters in dungeons and dragons and i have a question for dms out there, i have a character concpet of a paladin who does not know who their deity is because it is the goddess of magic and mystery Mystra. i understand in 5e a paladin's deity has to be a lawful deity in genera; speaking. but my theory is is that he/she was mugged and was on deaths door and called out for anyone for aid to which mystra replied but not revealing who she was to him/her. and he would be an oath of vengance to save the lower classes and lower people from harm and vow to never have someone go through what he/she went through and be the "protector of innocents" in a sort of way. Would this be a viable character? or would it not work because of the goddess being Mystra?
Paladins aren't restricted by alignment nor are they required to have a deity.
Play the paladin by their Oath as well as their Bonds, Flaws, Ideals, and personality.
@cobalt frigate oh okay, my step father used to play alot of 3.5 or 3rd editon and he said that the paladins diety had to at least be a lawful one so not like any evil ones, so i guess i kind of just always went with that
Whether or not its viable depends entirely on the DM.
5E removed the alignment and deity restrictions that past editions had.
Some might accept it; some might not.
Yeah, work with your DM.
Some might be playing in a world where Mystra doesn’t exist.
thanks
@smoky adder is there another diety thats kind of like her where as their godhood is more centered around mystery or secrets? that would ideally be in most worlds that aret entirely homebrew?
That depends on your DM's campaign setting.
Every game is a world of its own.
Only your DM can tell you which gods are available in your campaign.
Hey me and my lover want to find a Dm or just people to start a party with but we don’t have set hours or such we can play it’s only like sudden and spontaneous hours
as in, set scheduled games would be harder to commit to and you two would need more of pick-up style games?
Yeah sorry our lives are a little hectic so it kinda hard to know when we can play for sure next
Running a game generally takes time to prep, and can also take a number of hours to play. That’s why scheduling tends to be the more prevalent way to get a game going.
However, the game can also be run in a text-based form called play-by-post (pbp) that is much more spontaneous as the story only moves along as people are willing to text. Some move rapidly, while others at a more relaxed pace.
what are some common classes in the world of dnd...i want to make some chracters beforehand just in case
What do you mean by common classes?
All the official classes except artificer are generally allowed by default at most tables
and it depends on the world a DM is running as it can vary in terms of if certain magic classes are more present than others. That said, Fighter would likely be considered the most "common" since a Fighter, in essence, can be anything from a sell-sword, city guard, foot soldier, etc.
Actually the phb says that not every guard and soldier is a fighter
And that fighters are quite rare even in militaries
In my experience, there are very few DMs and settings that outright ban certain classes. You should feel free to practice building characters using whatever class strikes your fancy
not artificer and Critical Role classes/subclasses is a good place to start

HELLO!!! im new to dnd and making my high elf paladin character on dnd beyond but im not sure how the numbers work
can anyone assist?
I rolled the dice and got, 11, 15, 16, 14, 18, 13
what is the most optimal strength, dexterity, constituion, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma?
As a Paladin, you're going to be mostly martial, so either Strength (for big hammer or sword, and heavy armor), or Dexterity (you can use a rapier or a shortsword and light or medium armor). Constitution is good on everybody. But as a Paladin, you'll want Charisma for your spellcasting ability and eventually your aura of protection.
I would go STR or DEX -> CHA -> CON -> WIS -> other
You can swap Cha and con based on how much you want to rely on spells
at a certain point, your CHA will affect all saves while you're conscious
optimal is to dump strength and take 1 level in Hexblade
This isn’t the channel for optimal
he asked for optimal
optimal scores, not multiclass combo stuff
bruh the multiclass has to do with the scores specifically in this case
Hey Guys, I’m a new dm starting a game with completely new people to the game, is there any like free oneshot/twoshot campaigns you recommend? We’ll also be doing this online
Ooo may I join
There’s a few on dndbeyond and quite a few on Dmsguild
Hello 🙂
While I haven't played it myself, this is the one I see recommended most frequently for a first-level one-shot for newbies https://www.dmsguild.com/product/186488/A-Most-Potent-Brew--A-Basic-Rules-Adventure
Good morning everyone, I am kinda new to D&D and I would like to know how mane books there are that I can get to have more monsters.
For example the monster manual or monsters of the multiverse.
I'd personally recommend Monster of the Multiverse. It has some cool player options, and a bunch of new creatures and some redos of creatures in the MM.
Also a good deal of the monsters in the MM are free to use already, and can be found on dndbeyond or roll20, whereas the multiverse ones are not.
Hi I am new to dnd and have no idea what I’m doing, I joined because my college has a dnd club and I got kicked out of all the teams because they were too full but I still wanted to see what it was about, was wondering if anyone could give me the rundown

A Most Potent Brew, already linked, is good. Other options: The Delian Tomb and The Silvyr Tower.
Any tips on wildshape for circle of the moon druids
What kind of tips are you looking for?
If you cast Call Lighytning before transforming, you can maintain concentration and continue to call down bolts of lightning, without it being "casting a spell"
Tips focused mostly on combat wildshape
are bards casters like wizards or half casters like warlocks
Bards are full casters
Warlocks aren't really half casters (like Rangers and paladins), but are something unique.
- Remember, creatures with bigger health pools are very important
- Pay attention to which creatures have multi attack and which don't
- Don't forget you keep your Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores when you change
- You take rollover damage when you drop to 0 HP as a Wildshape, so be careful!
Ok thanks!
I've been a DM for 2 sessions now, and I was just wondering, maybe my plot is too obvious but my players seem to treat it as like this is an objective that must be completed for something else to happen, rather than having any fun? And I'd understand that, but they say the do enjoy it and it's just confusing ig. We're all new. Any advice? Sorry if this isn't the place
If you'd like advice specifically on how to be a DM and run the game or write a plotline, you should post the question in #dm-discussion
how do DMs keep track of exp and know how to give give each player...do they just make up a number or smth?
Typically, you will award XP to the whole party, not individuals. You don't want to set up situations where the players compete against each other.
That means you have 5-6 individual accountants at your table, and usually they will agree.
You can also keep track yourself.
However, XP isn't the only way to do it. A lot of people play Milestone, so you don't track XP at all, but rather give the level ups when it feels right for the story.
And a monsters statblock tells you how much XP its worth
XP can be rewarded for various things, but most typically it is given for defeating a monster. The amount of XP a monster is worth is based on their Challenge Rating, and is listed in their stat block
The number of experience points (XP) a monster is worth is based on its challenge rating. Typically, XP is awarded for defeating the monster, although the DM may also award XP for neutralizing the threat posed by the monster in some other manner. Unless something tells you otherwise, a monster summoned by a spell or other magical ability is worth the XP noted in its stat block.
Source: Basic Rules: Monster Statistics
Each monster has an XP value based on its challenge rating. When adventurers defeat one or more monsters — typically by killing, routing, or capturing them — they divide the total XP value of the monsters evenly among themselves. If the party received substantial assistance from one or more NPCs, count those NPCs as party members when dividing up the XP. (Because the NPCs made the fight easier, individual characters receive fewer XP.)

Can anyone please explain to me how and when do I use proficiency bonus ?
It's really hard to understand
For me at least
You use your Proficiency Bonus with anything you're proficient in — such as weapons, ability skills, and saving throws
Each class will say which weapon, skills, and saving throws they're proficient in.
Your proficiency bonus applies to many of the numbers you’ll be recording on your character sheet:
- Attack rolls using weapons you’re proficient with
- Attack rolls with spells you cast
- Ability checks using skills you’re proficient in
- Ability checks using tools you’re proficient with
- Saving throws you’re proficient in
- Saving throw DCs for spells you cast (explained in each spellcasting class)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ProficiencyBonus
So that means that any class can use any weapon?
Well, yes.
You just don't add your proficiency bonus unless you're proficient with that weapon.
Think of it this way: if you're trained to use a particular weapon, you're better at it. You're more likely to hit your target with it.
I thought the could only use ones the book said they were proficient with
Since you add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll, you're therefore more likely to succeed.
If you use a weapon you haven't been trained in, you don't add the bonus, so it's harder to hit.
A wizard can use a sword, but they're probably not as skilled with it as a fighter
So if they are proficient with the weapon. The atack roll would be a D20 + proficiency
Right ?
Ohhhh
I'm buying The Players Handbook. The Dungeon Master Guide. Essential Kit, 2022 DnD Annual and Tactical Maps from someone on Facebook marketplace. They are saying the delivery cost will be £20 because the package would weigh 40kg. Could anyone tell me if all those books would weight up to 40kg? Because I honestly dont think it wouldnt weight that much
Can’t verify but I know shipping books can be expensive.
A friend mailed me a single paperback and it was like 20 bucks.
40 kg is too much. I think you're being scammed if they're going to charge you for 40 kg delivery.
So a Barbarian using a battles Axe atack roll would be: 1D20+proficiency+streng bonus ?
The delivery system we are working with is for weight. I dont think all those books would weigh 40kg
Thats HEAVY
Yep!
Yeah. Thats what Im thinking
Barbarians are proficient in simple weapons and martial weapons -- which is basically all weapons.
That does seem heavy.
My school backpack in middle school was like 30kg and I had like 9 books in it idk
Like its £10 for 20kg. No way all those items even weigh up to 20kg
20kg is one half a dead lift
I wouldn't buy 5E books from a 3rd party not associated with a big site like eBay that has policies to protect you from scammers.
Hey folks, shipping costs is probably a better topic for another channel like #dnd-discussion or #non-dnd-topics. This channel is for helping people with the basics of D&D.
Ok, so my player should be hitting much more now that I understand this. I was only usin the D20 so I didn't know gor to hit a monster with more then 21 AC 😅
Thx a lot for the help
One last ting, Sorry. Someone told the that a 20 on the D20 is a inta hit
Is that true ?
Yep! That's what's known as a critical hit.
The attack hits regardless of the target's AC. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Rolling1or20
And you roll the damage dice twice. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#CriticalHits
That is the thing with that enemy is doble damage or no damage at all because I can't heat it
Sorry I don't know if I am explaining my point
Enemies can also get a critical hit, and would roll the damage dice twice as well.
Sorry
So an attack that normally deals 2d6 + 3 would instead deal 4d6 + 3.
anyone got any advice for planning a campaign? (i just wanna get this idea i have down in some form)
I mean I’m planning one rn
Start small!
Plot out the area they start in, a couple key NPCs, and a nearby dungeon or two.
Come up with a few basic truths that set the world apart. Things the characters would know.
ah okay, got it, got it
Good luck on it
the idea i had was that it's going to be a murder mystery/slasher
Hello im interested in playing dnd but i have no idea where to start or find a group. I also need a bit of help for learning the basics. I watched some videos people playing dnd and i really loved them so i would be thankful if someone helped me personally.
Oooo nice

Thank you @smoky adder
Hi everyone! I'm brand new to D&D, I've been playing a lot of Baldur's Gate 3 recently and have decided to step into actually playing the game (remotely). Does anyone have an online group that I could join for a beginner? Or want to make one with me?
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Yes I'm just in the process of reading through now 🙂
#find-a-game is where you should start your search for a group!
Thank you for this!
Hey guys, can I ask a rather silly question here?
Shoot.
I and my friend were discussing different types of DM'ing, we were using a silly example of a Gnome trying to grapple a Dragon, say the Gnome rolled a Nat 20, in his opinion you simply never allow someone to roll a check they can't clear, in this case a small unit trying to grapple a Gargantuan target. I said I would allow them to try, but it would just end up with them grabbing ahold of the Dragon so if it chose to fly all they'd be doing if they tried to hold grapple would be tightly gripping onto the dragon.
They said it's worthless to let wondering roll for something they can't succeed, I think it's more in the spirit of the game to let them try and give an unforeseen outcome, should you just never let people try a roll you know they won't succeed?
Just paid £50 for all of these (The Players Handbook, DM Guide, Essential Kit, Tactical Maps Reincarnated, the DnD Anuual 2022 and a few figure) reckon thats a alright deal?
Circle of the Moon, Shepherd, Dreams, Land, Widlfire, Spores, and Stars.
That is outstanding.
That's my question anyways
There is something like support but it heals or is it just a spell
Nice!
That depends. I never let folks roll for something that is impossible within the game. They can roll for something that's so high a DC they can't succeed at that moment, but that's different.
Hey if the Gnome pumps up two sizes bigger they've got a shot
I don't understand your question.
all Druids can be played as support. If you want to focus on healing, then Circle of Stars, Wildfire and Circle of Dreams get some extra abilities in that regard
A gnome is Small sized. The largest the opponent can be is Medium sized.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Grappling
The target of your grapple must be no more than one size larger than you and must be within your reach.
Ok ty
Some people hew to RAW, so that what isn't logical is still possible according to the rules. Other folks flit between logically and mechanically sound.
So it goes small, medium, large, gargantuan right?
Tiny, Small, Medium, Large, Huge, Gargantuan
Mr. Clouds is right! Per the rules, there wouldn't even be a roll since the dragon isn't a valid target
The gnome can only grapple up to a Medium sized opponent.
Yeah, I was saying if they use magic or elixirs they might be about to bump their size up, but not too that size xD
Rip the dream of Gnoney the Grappler
But making a more general answer to the question:
A natural 20 doesn't guarantee success of any skill check. It's likely to work on most things, but that's just because it's a high number. It's up to a DM's discretion to decide what does and doesn't need a roll when it comes to seemingly impossible tasks
Does anyone use chatgpt as a assistant in the DMing?
The only guarenteed automatic success with a Nat20 are attack rolls (and death saves).
Probably bring this over to #dm-discussion rather than here. This channel is to help new players out.
Okay. was asking as Im starting to DM. Wondering if its a good way to learn the basics
As I go
If you have a game going, I'm looking to join one for newcomers?
I'm playing in person
That channel is a great place to ask for advice for new and old DMs alike.
thanks
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
Thank you!
breth of the dragon is a main action right
It's an action, yes
because it's listed under actions and isn't stated to be a bonus action

I made a character on dnd beyond, how do I share him?
You can post the link so long as you describe it. There's also a Manage button that should allow you to share.
You might want to check at the bottom of your character settings to make sure the character is publicly visible, though.
Thanks
I made sure to make it public
Should I send the link here?
Or is there a specific channel for characters?
You can share it in #character-discussion!
Thank you a lot
what exactly are modifiers
hi
Howdy
Broadly speaking, a modifier is anything you add (or subtract) to your die roll to calculate the final total.
The most common ones are your ability modifiers, which are based on your ability scores as shown in the table here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
As an example, a Barbarian with a Strength score of 16 has a Strength modifier of +3.
When they make an attack with their battle axe, they add their Strength modifier to the roll, making them more likely to hit their target.
Welcome
@fallen surge Hello 👋 how are you?
Doing well
Thank you !!!!
very helpful
Your AC is 13 plus your Dex modifier.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/mage-armor
The target's base AC becomes 13 + its Dexterity modifier.
Yes.
Ty^^
Some spells and class features give you a different way to calculate your AC. If you have multiple features that give you different ways to calculate your AC, you choose which one to use.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ArmorClass
How's your guy's average dnd campaign experience?
50/50 on rescheduling and having a good time pretty much 😎
Scheduling is the worst part.
Level 1 Sorcerer stats, is this good> https://i.gyazo.com/3a1ef3b493396af376a51bd2655d270d.png
laughing, crying and having fun with my buddies.
and scheduling.
Yo, greetings 'n stuff
I'm brand new, have never played, I'm old .... n having a hard time finding a place/way/people to learn to play with..... Is this the place to do that, or are there other communities where I can learn and actually play all at the same time?
Yep, this is a great place to learn! We have helpful links for some resources pinned in the channel, and if you have any questions we’re happy to answer

If I got an amulet that increases constitution during level-up it is taken into account?
Thanks
or it is only base constitution
Whenever you constitution score changes, either through magic or an ASI, you HP changes to match it. If you un-equip that item, your HP will drop back down to what it would be with the base score, but while you have it, you treat that as your con score, even while leveling up (and retroactively for all level ups)
understood, thank you.
Those are rough stats for any character… 😅
I got a second re-roll to this, https://i.gyazo.com/39eaf0833b45c0be619cf60c8ff0631a.png
Those are pretty good stats
I played back in the 80s and watching the various YouTube channels have the bug to play again
Do it 😈
The modern game, 5e, is much player friendlier
So if the d20 is a pass/fail die, what happens if you roll BETWEEN 1 or 20? Would the higher numbers (10+) be like Your attempt succeeds, BUT X happens, or? Would the opposite effect happen on lower rolls (10-2)? Example: You attempt X, but (negative effect) happens!? Or is it up to the DM to determine the effect?
There's three types of d20 rolls: ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws.
Your success in any one of them is determined by comparing your total to a target number.
For attack rolls, that target number is the enemy's armor class (AC).
For the other two, it's the difficulty class (DC).
You need to meet or beat the target number to succeed.
AC acts like a creature’s toughness in MTG, right?
I wouldn't know. Sorry. 😅
But as an example, a skeleton has an AC of 13. If a fighter wants to hit the skeleton, that means they need to get a 13 or higher on their attack roll.
Are you new to D&D?
Defense points
Yeah
Armor Class (AC) is an abstraction of armor and difficulty in hitting a creature due to their dexterity/speed etc.
I've never played MTG. I have no frame of comparison here, and I don't want to mislead you by guessing.
Once you roll to see if you hit a creature, you do a second, completely separate roll with different dice to determine how much damage you do. Your roll vs their AC only determines you hit or miss, and has no effect on damage
But for most intents and purposes AC is just "how hard is it to hit?"
BG3?
Baldurs Gate 3, just came out a month ago
Baldur's Gate 3, a recent video game.
the whole game is based off DnD 5th edition
obviously it doesnt have everything but it has alot
Oh, duh lol
I got into DnD via Neverwinter
Ok, so I'm not new to D&D, but I am new here. Can someone please tell what RAW stands for? I've not heard it used before.
Rules as Written = RAW
The exact written letter of the rules in the rule book. Rules as Written
Thank you!
This is usually contrasted with RAI, which stands for Rules as Intended
technically 1 isnt fail and 20 isnt succeed
it can be broken down in to easy thing Medium thing hard thing.
easy thing the player has to roll 10 to succeed
med 15
hard 20
say the player wants to do a medium thing ( as decided by the dm)
then they roll the d20 and add the bonus there character has ( or subtract) and if the roll under they fail, overthey succeed
I know the 00-90 die serves as a percentage die, but what are the other dice used for?
The other dice are typically used for damage and Hit Dice.
d20 being the most versatile for attack, ability check, and saving throw rolls.
Different weapons, spells, and other abilities will tell you to roll those dice for various things. 90% of the time, the dice other than the d20 will be used for rolling damage
Okay
How customizeable is characters in Dnd. By that I mean looks wise
how does one design the way their characters look
I would guess by way of the player’s imagination?
It's your imagination, so however you want, really.
Generally speaking, you can describe them however you like.
Depends on your race/ heritage but most dms will be ok with anything that doesn't change the rules
Though your DM may set practical limitations.
D&D is a game that is played with spoken word, and visualized in the imagination. You customize how your character looks by saying "my character looks like..."
No I understand that, by what I meant was. For instance if you have a character sheet or playing table top with character tokens
would we design our characters looks on paper?
For example is there a website we could design our characters at?
not typically, unless you are doing so for fun
Hero Forge is a good stand-in.
Free?
Yep. You can pay for extra options and such, but you don't need to.
There isn't an official tool for character art that but there are many online resources that can be used as others have noted.
Sweet!
HeroForge is used for designing custom D&D miniatures. Its free to design a character with it, but costs money to have it shipped or to download the file for 3D printing after you are done
Makes sense
A screenshot of the finished design is usually enough for tabletop purposes, though.
Folks share their creations here in the #dnd-heroforge-etc
There are plenty of other online character art creation websites out there. #third-party-tools-archive is probably the best place to ask for more options with that
Good to know, thanks!
Hello! I’m looking for anyone to help give advice on character creation. I have the basics of a character fleshed out but would like some more info on what to add! Thanks!
What have you got so far? What are you missing?
Hi, me and my group of friends are fairly new to dnd and want to host a private session. Any advice for a total noobie on how to be a dungeon master? thanks
Head on over to #dm-discussion to get advice on DMing.
I’ve got pretty much a full character sheet but honestly have no idea if nerfing/boosting or any changes should be made. Her story isn’t too fleshed out yet either. Any tips are welcome. If you want to DM it will be appreciated!
You can share a link to your character sheet in #character-discussion if you want someone to double-check it.
And for backstories, honestly, it’s better if they’re full of holes.
Give them a fun hook, and then just focus on what you need to know about them for the first session.
Then you can work with your DM to add any details they’re looking for.
Or your DM might fill those holes in during play, and use it as a way to tie your character to the story.
hey! me and my friend are very new to dnd he's played once and ive never played at all but im very interested to learn how and im excited because i literally live for stuff like this and i was hoping to get some guidance because we both have no idea what we're doing

wondering whether or not i should get baldurs gate 3
Do it 😈
ok you convinced me lol
Hello there
hi
Welcome!
BG3 is my legit, no exaggeration, game of the decade for me. Only maybe Sekiro coming close, but entirely different types of games.
i have heard heard really good things bout it
#baldurs-gate-3-spoilers good place to discuss
theres a chat for it? thats awesome!
Newbie to D&D never have played before. Friend urged me to play it so I'm giving it the old college try. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What playstyle would you like more is the first thing you could do
Some are casters of magic, others are martials, there are some in between
Have a read of the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
Dnd you'll find out is mostly intuitive
Races are too really interesting to look at
I have read the rules
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDnRMnDDjAzK5uZLidDUtHtD1iN06Qe0G&si=7dHjiEQBeYmJKRqi this playlist explain the classes while being entertaining.
There are one too for the races if you decide to check it afterwards
Hello I’ll be writing in here later but I’d like to know from anyone what class is it that’s basically a human but with animal ears/ tail.
closest thing i can think of is the shifter species
Idk if that’s the best option. Did you even read the disclaimer at the start?
That’s not really what classes are. You’re looking for a race
Ooo my bad lol yes race
Shifter is pretty much that
Gracias
I mean those types of videos were my introduction to dnd
Wish what works the best tho
It’s more of a meme than actually an informative video
Its more so they can get the feel of each class in 2 minutes each, guess there are better videos tho
yeah naturally but u still get the general idea
But dnd in mostly intuitive too, you usually know what things do by their name
So I just bought the core rulebooks and it seems my friends want me to dm because they all have wanted to play but never really had anyone to kickstart it so any tips for a new dm/player that I could use

Yes I created a practice character
You're quite done then, just need a dm to go
hey there all, I was just wondering if I could have any help with making my first character sheet?
If you want to try building other races/classes practice characters too feel invited
Sure what do you need help with
Are you using a platform?
It'll be a practice character or one to use in campaign
campaign
Which lvl
i think he said we are starting at level 5
Got the race/class?
human wizard
PM then
hi
Honestly as much as I like paper d&d beyond is free for the base stuff and is very user-friendly
can i print off my completed sheet?
Yes - even export it as a PDF
You can
As it officially supports D&D 5th Edition, it should be widely accepted
So is roll 20
It looks just like a paper sheet
I dont usually like dndbeyond very much, but depending on your subclass I think it's a good approach
It'll make things easier for you tbh
my friend was gonna give me the players handbook
It's a great book and all you'll need to start
Basically you have a plethora of different ways to create and manage a character sheet - find what works best for you.
I'd be surprised of any dm doesn't allow beyond or roll 20
Roll20 is most often the standard way to go
Well if they're playing D&D 4th edition or Advance D&D (2nd edition) they probably wouldn't accept a DnDBeyond character! (since DnDBeyond currently only supports 5th edition D&D)

okay so should I use roll 20 or dnd beyond?
Check both out and decide what would work best for you - or yeah whatever your group prefers to play with.
And you'll play the campaign there
i think we're going physical for playing
Oh man bring me on I miss those days
is it rare to play in person?
Most of us play online
It was the way during quarantine
Last in person game I played was back in 2017
Well, its certainly easier to find people to play with online than in person. Though you have to think about the selection bias of asking that here. This is an online forum
The pandemic really did a number to in-person play but it's coming back.
And some groups folks have moved but still want to play together so online play is a way to keep the D&D games going despite geographical location.
Not rare, but not the standard in my experience
Which levels do Warlocks get Hexblade? Also is Hexblade op?
i have a group, just wondering what the preference is
warlocks get their subclass at level 1, so that's when you get the first hexblade feature
I prefer in person if
Hexblade is a not op, people say it is because they do some stuff with it that makes it op
I see, is there a link I can see warlock level guide
i found the 5e handbook but i dont see hexblade in it
Hexblade was published in Xanathar's Guide to everything.
cause of the arcane magical arts
I didnt know it
And I have the book here 🤣 years since I opened it
Is there a way to play DnD online or is it only tabletop in person? I want to play but I don't have many friends who would be interested
There is!
from what i've heard on here its very normal to play online
Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo and Foundry VTT are all platforms that support online play. Besides that there is also Theater of the Mind which is playing just with voice and perhaps music
There are even discord bots to play it only using discord
Any of those links used to play solo as well?
I'll definitely check it out, I need to ask some friends to play too
For 1 person? Not really, dnd is a collaborative game
D&D is a social game designed to be played with 1 Dungeon Master and usually 3-6 players.
1 person and like 3 bots or something
Not quite I'm afraid
hello
It'll feel like playing monopoly being the bank the plane, skate and burger
That said some folks have built tools for solo D&D play - but it's more of random tables to help generate the story.
But it really changes how D&D plays.
Ginny Di has a good explainer video on solo play you should look at, but ultimately it’s kind of a choose-your-own adventure plus randomness.
makes sense, I've just been playing lots of BG3 and I got interested in DnD

Foundry VTT is the best but paid
Hello, I'm new to the DnD community and saw some clips of a campaign on YouTube. I decided I want to give it a go, however I don't know how to play or where to find a party. Can you please give me advice?
All depends on you
Best really depends on you and your group's needs IMO.
!new @hidden lion
Isnt it that
The bot command only runs in #dnd-newcomers
Yes, I got the role
And it's ?new
Or check the pinned messages - as it's also posted there!
Yes, it gave me the role
Nah - the ! is for Avrae.
I'm not going crazy in my early twenties
We use a different bot for the instant commands
Oh I am
So we use ? for that other bot.
Gotcha
The joys of running bots on Discord! lol
Bard is a class, right?
Yes
As someone learning to play guitar and how to sing, I feel obligated to play Bard
Shine on, my rockstar
wait
ive been playing bg3 but it doesnt have hexblade so i wanna play dnd and play hexblade now lol
what should my second language be as a human
Spanish is really well regarded
It also helps you don't need to learn another alphabet
i get a free second language though
Learning Spanish has a better chance to be useful than if you were to learn, for example, Cambodian
Infernal is for demons
Elvish for elves
Abyssal for creatures of the ... abyss? Like dark creatures
im taking spanish right now
Nice
Or Kurdish
Hi, trying to start a campaign with my friends but none of us have played before and I was chosen as the dm. Looking for resources on how to get started learning more about the game and a more in depth guide to DMing. Any help appreciated.
elvish would be useful, but do they speak common already?
So elvish is usually more used than deep speech
most of the time yes
Most do
hmm
alot of people are capable of at least 2 languages
Orcish
is there a spell to translate languages ingame?
Dragon speech
there is!
i was thinking that
Orcish is cool
orc bandits probably dont speak common
so it'd be nice if i could beg for my life in their language if need be
Whatever gnolls speak too
should i start as a sage for a wizard?
man idk if i even am a wizard yet it just sounds cool
whats another cool class that beginners can understand
There are other classes too
Clerics are wizards but religious and that bonk people with weapons
I suggest bard or cleric
cleric is more of a support from what i heard
Honestly they can do a lot of things
very flexible
You can have a party only with clerics and be functional
I'd say so
As you'll start at 5th level I suggest a simpler class for you since full casters would have a lot of spells
Or perhaps you have a gm that can guide you through the sessions until you pick the speed

whats a gm?
Bards too are casters but easier ones
Game-Master I presume
Or DM= Dungeon Master
For most things
what is a class i should absolutely avoid as a beginner
i think they're all fairly easy to learn
from what ive seen
I don't think you should absolutely avoid one class, if I had to pick one it would depend on your preferences tbh
Maybe the ones you don't have an inkling into playing? All classes are good, taking the players interesf at hand no?
im interested in magic, but im not afraid to try a warrior class
i just dont wanna be a dumb barbarian
Then a warlock would be a good combi?
Wizards, Sorcerers, Paladins, they have some special stuff to them, but necessarily bad
Warlocks are both casters and fighters
Barbarians don't have to be dumb if you don't want them to be, but there are plenty of other options for weapon fighters as well
I've found warlocks to be the most fun in BG3
They're not as full casters like cleric and wizard, you'll not have as powerful spells, but your spells that you can cast at any time are stronger than theirs
I myself have decided to import a character I have written on my private Novel, who followed the path of the Righteous Paladins, but is squandered by the reality, and brutality of those who are in the higher ranks.
Warlocks are kinda full casters. They certainly aren't half-casters
They're something of their own
Regardless, how well you character plays, depends on your tactics.
Mostly roleplay
I don't tbink its like other mmo's where 1 class is OP.
Dont mind much on tactics, it comes with time
Exp farm by clubbing crabs? Is that a thing?
More or less
Usually it's rats or goblins lol
I'd laugh my ass of if my players just wanted to beat up crabs
lol i'll be gaining exp, while having also stocking up on delicious crab meat haha
Question
We've done it
the character we create, is it only for 1 campaign and then game over?
Answer
or does the character move onto other campaigns of higher levels?
It depends on you
It doest have to be. Some people want to try something new
You can bring it by talking with the new gm abt it and if he approves then it is
But not all worlds are in the same setting
No
Generally characters are built for a specific campaign, though players often reuse the same concept and remake the character for a different campaign. But generally characters and stats/items/etc. aren't shared between campaigns.
Depends on your group though, some groups may do things differently.
or does one go from 1-10 and another from 10-20
Most do not.
They change from table to table
Some starts at lvl 10 others end at 5, some go to 12 others to 20
It's all mixed up
Most campaigns start out at a low level, and usually don't get very high.
There are pre written adventures that are level 1 to 20, if you want to play to such extents playing those is easier than going with a setting created by the dungeon master
def going to be playing one of those for sure
Some people also add the adventures they're playing to another
Like ||an Urban mystery 1-5 to dealing with an horror city and vampire lord 5-?? (10?)||
Adventures were called "modules" because they were modular — DMs would mix and match unrelated adventures to each other to form a campaign.
Hi im new and i want to check if i filled out my character sheet correctly. where can i go for that?
You can post your character sheet in #character-discussion
OK Thank you
Basically, there's no set-in-stone adventure. Sure, there's adventure products, but they still are just something for a DM to use, whether they use it from the tin, or if they modify or just cannibalize elements from it to use elsewhere.
some DMs allow and ban myriads of things, some DMs say no homebrew, some DMs say a truckload of homebrew, some DMs use published adventures, some DMs run an entirely homebrewed setting and story.
That's cool
Yeah it is
For example, in my game I run, it's set in Exandria (a world detailed in Explorer's Guide to Wildemount (a continent) and Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn (another continent)), I gave my players an improved standard array with a little point shuffle, they got an additional feat of their choice under my discretion (so they pick weird stuff like Chef or Inspiring Leader, very very minor effects compared to some other feats), and "Martial" classes got the Martial Adept feat with a recharging superiority die.
That's a lot of specifics that is only guaranteed to be found in my game.
Yo, I’ve been wanting to play dnd for awhile but I never find a chance to. I don’t want to jump into a campaign not knowing if I’m able to stick with it yet, and consequently messing stuff up for others
Are there one-shot kind of things too?
Anyone know where I can find some?
yep my first couple ones are oneshot
did one on roll20 and another in my local hobby shop
also i joined my city's dnd server so found some short/long campaigns there
pretty good way to check if you like it before making a long commitment
Oh sweet, I’ll look on roll20
My town is small and far from bigger cities so no hobby shops :/
theres also channels here where you can find games as well
tho i never used it cos im unfortunately in a completely different timezone
There is tons of advice out there, but maybe start with the practical issues. I came across this guide just today that you might find helpful: https://howtogm.guide
It really walks you through the process.
thanks!
Hey there, I'm new to DnD and due to not really having a group of friends to play DnD with, I was wondering if someone could help explain what DnD is and how it works
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
So dnd is a ttrpg. It's a game about character skill (the numbers on your sheet) rather than purely player skill (like your aim in a shooter, or your reflexes in a hack and slash).
To say concisely
You have statistics saying what your character is good at
The DM describes the scene, you describe what you do and how your character acts, the DM describes what happens, and so on.
Tysm ^^ where would I find a game to play with some people? Online preferably
hello
You can make a post from #find-a-game following its rules and using the bot command.
But also take a look through the basic rules and feel free to ask any specific questions
Anyone got any good videos on how to dm? I can already plan what i need to and stuff, it just dosent flow, anyone got any advice
Probably best to ask in #dm-discussion, since you already have the main plan under your belt.
i literally have played no dungeons and dragons whatsoever. i know nothing but it’s extremely fun and hilarious and the bard likes to… be silly.
i know its a roleplaying (usually) in person game, but i have no clue where to start and i want to start.
what do i do.

Can someone explain Sorc spells to me? So at lv. 3 you know four 1st level and two 2nd level spells..... but you can only know 4 spells in total. So on their character sheet do they put six spells between 1st and 2nd level and pick 4 from their sheet to use for the day?
I think you're confusing known spells with spell slots
At 3rd level you know a total of 4 different sorcerer spells
Those spells can be of any level you have spell slots for, which at 3rd level is 1st or 2nd
You have four 1st level spell slots and two 2nd level spell slots, which are what you use to power those four spells you know
A first level spell requires a spell slot of 1st level or higher to power it
A second level spell requires a spell slot of 2nd level or higher to power it
So he can pick 2 2nd level and 2 1st level... or 3 1st level and 1 2nd level of any spell he wants within those levels
Yep
What about spells given by race/class/subclass/ etc
Sorcerer is a class
And subclass spells will follow the the same rules
Race spells will state how many you know and how you cast them
Mage of Quandrix; Quandrix Spells: You learn the cantrip Guidance and the 1st-level spell Guiding Bolt. You learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown on the Quandrix Spells table. So does he automatically gain Guiding Bolt or does that count against his 4 skills?
What class is that from?
Sorcerer; subclass: Mage of Quandrix (UA)
You can ignore that, it was never released and has been abandoned
UA means Unearthed Arcana, which is the D&D Playtest system (aka beta testing)
Yes, I'm aware of that. It is just would get get essentially 5 skills with Guiding Bolt being free or would he get 4 with Guiding Bolt + 3 of whatever he chooses
Where are you getting skills from, I thought you were asking about spells
I menat spells not skills
This is the newcomers chat, which focuses on the basics. UA is very much not the basics
A subclass will say if it grants extra spells and if those spells are automatically known or just added to your classes spell list to choose from
You learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown on the Lunar Spells table. Each of these spells counts as a sorcerer spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of sorcerer spells you know.
Each of these spells counts as a class spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of spells you know. If you are a wizard, you can add these spells to your spellbook upon learning them, without expending any gold, and prepare them as normal.
Sorc or Wizard. I just completely missed that little detail when I was reading through it
Those are different classes and work differently
Okay, is this still from the Strixhaven UA subclass?
Yes; Source: Unearthed Arcana 79 - Mages of Strixhaven
The reason you should ignore that is because they were the first and only (to date) attempt at cross-class subclasses and it very much did not work
Hence why WotC abandoned it, it was a failed experiment
And very much beyond the scope of this channel
There's a difference between organizing what spells you have available and casting spells.
As a sorcerer, you organize what spells you know when you make the sorcerer character and gain sorcerer levels. You know 4 different Sorcerer spells.
Casting spells: You have four 1st level spell slots, and two 2nd level spell slots.
Let's say you know Burning Hands, Disguise Self (1st level) and Blur and Scorching Ray (2nd level).
If you want to cast a spell, you pick what spell you're going to cast, whether it's a cantrip (free to cast) or a spell of 1st level or higher.
So if you pick Burning Hands to cast at that moment, you cast it, expending at least a 1st level spell slot (as Burning Hands is a 1st level spell).
But if you pick Scorching Ray to cast at that moment, you cast it, expending at least a 2nd level spell slot (as Scorching Ray is a 2nd level spell).
How much dice do you need for your turn, like just a 20-sided dice or others included? to count your score or hit point while doin some action or something?
Since I see some people use more than 1 or 2 dice
You need a full set of dice, which is typically 7
d4
d6
d8
d10
d%
d12
d20
dX means "A dice with X sides"
a d% is a ten sided dice like a d10, but goes up in steps of 10 starting at 00; 10, 20, 30....to 90
10 sides? is dX?
No, I'm explaining what dX means
dX isn't a dice
d4 means "A dice with 4 sides"
d10 means "A dice with 10 sides"
dX means "A dice with X sides"
but it's dice technically...
No, it's just an expression to make talking about dice easier
what do you mean "A dice with X sides?
A variable
No, like X can equal any number
mhm
It's commonly used when talking about dice in terms of the rules
Forget I mentioned it
so altogether i should have 7 dice
You need a set of 7 dice
They're sold in sets usually
yeah you're right
false alarm lol
i got all 7 lol, my bad mate
i have like 2 more questions
when it's your turn to do some action or trigger something, what dice do you roll or is it altogether, or are each for different things. How would i count what number i got?
Can you rephrase that question?
i 'll edit it
It depends on what you're doing
i see
When you create your character on first level you get a fix value of starting Hit Points. Whenever you level up your character, this number increases, either by taking a predetermined fixed number, or by rolling a dice, and the size of the dice is determined by your class. Finally, no matter if you rolled or took fix HP you get for each level a Bonus equal to your constitution modifier
so would my group tell me to roll this dice ect
An attack will be a d20 + the relevant ability modifier + proficiency if you're proficient with the weapon
The damage will be the weapons damage dice + ability modifier, but not proficiency bonus
Their character sheet should tell them what to roll and what to add
So for example, if you ask for a dexterity saving throw, they should have their modifier for that save written down. They roll a d20 and add that number
i got confused on whati meant not like hit points like when it's your turn if you to do something in your group if you succeed or not
like in the actual campaign not the sheet
Have you read the basic rules?
The dungeon master will tell you what to roll.
In general, assume you as a player roll a 1d20, so a 20 sided dice.
Unless there are specifics stating another die size.
Read these key sections:
ok thanks, that's what I needed, I didn't want to cause any pressure and confusion on ya'll that's all sorry
For example if you attack with a weapon you roll a 20 sided dice. If you hit, then you need to look up what damage dice this weapon uses
mhm
You're fine - this channel is for helping new to D&D folks get started
i know when to use 20 sided die but I was wondering what the others were for
You can note down what weapons or other attacks you have in your character sheet, and there you also note down your bonus on the attack roll, and what you need to roll when rolling for damage if the attack hit
The DM may also ask you to roll a die. Like "Roll me a d8 please". Then you roll an eight sided die.
Cause DMs have sometimes tables for encounters etc and might let the players roll out the number to take on the table
ok cool thanks
last question
How do I any of my made character to go onto any campaign?
i mean it's pre-made, but it's made by me
You will need to navigate to the campaign invite link and then join with one of the characters you've made
Once you've done that, you can unassign the character so someone else can claim it when they join your campaign
Repeat this for each character you want to add to your campaign
Generally, you first find a DM/group to play with, make sure everyone can attend, and make your character to fit the DM's game.
For example, my game is set in a particular setting, so if somebody based their character backstory on an empire that doesn't exist in the setting I'm using... That causes issues.
