scheduling is pretty bad as well
But yeah, trying to find people to play is reeeeeeeal hard xD
trying to find good people to play is even worse
"I'd like to play but A-through-Z is a problem."
DMing is more work than being a player, but some people find letting go of control to be hard so, y'know, it depends on what you personally find difficult.
Honestly, I think the hardest parts of D&D deal with interpersonal dynamics, conflict management, and the like.
yup
Hmm, so which channel should I investigate if I wanted to try to learn to play, or do I just ask things here?
Ask here, and if need be, folks will direct you elsewhere.
game is shrimple enough, mess around with making characters, look into play-styles imo
Fair enough, so I've wanted to play for eons but never actually have luck finding a game that survives past two or three sessions, so I've never gotten in depth with making a character and exploring the game properly, if I wanted to make a Paladin and find a group what steps would you guys recommend?
Paladins seem fun to me cause I like the idea of them and I think I can work around being a buzzkill in a group.
- Read the rules or watch some videos of the rules like Handbooker Helper or WASD20's Rules School.
- Make a character for practice. Sketch out some ideas for their personality, backstory, etc. Don't get committed to a concept.
- Search for games. There's no shortage of places to look.
#looking-for-players advertises DMs looking for players. Consult with your potential DM and see what they’re looking for in a player - some prefer some who are more experienced while others run campaigns specifically for new players. It’ll usually be specified in the ad itself.
And you should make a character before looking for a game or ask a DM what they need and try to accommodate the group?
"Empowered Evocation
Beginning at 10th level, you can add your Intelligence modifier to one damage roll of any wizard evocation spell you cast."
Is like choosing a single spell that gets boosted? Can I switch it at level 20 when I have a better spell I'd rather use?
Create character concepts, not full-on characters. Be flexible so you can fit the group (but the group should also fit you).
Like razor said, have a rough idea planned out, but be prepared to make changes based on what your DM may permit/not permit
Fair enough, cause my ideas so far are fairly basic, Fighter/Paladin/Cleric's are what I've been drawn to. I just like heavy armour and either hitting hard to helping out.
👋 hoping to make friends and maybe find an online game to join.
And learn how to do all that lol

hii im not 100% new to dnd, im just looking for a session where i can enjoy people there and make friendships
i would like some help making a character tho
Welcome! #find-a-game can help with the former, and #character-discussion with the latter.
I have played a cpl of one offs. Yeah, Id need help with character as well. What little I played was yrs ago.
Thank you for feedback.
I'm looking to join a high level campaign with magic items.

What I mean particularly is where can I find campaigns for use in real life with friends, I assume there are some popular ones available for anyone to host?
Ah, I see. Well, there's the official ones, which you can buy via bookstore or game shops. You can also get them digitally on sites like D&D Beyond and Roll20.
Lost Mine of Phandelver, the original fifth edition starter adventure, is available for free by registering with D&D Beyond.
Thank you! I assume outside of that it's either homebrew or pay up?
Yep. There are third-party ones out there for free and there are free official one-shot adventures, but if you're looking for official campaigns, you otherwise gotta drop some money.
Okay. Thank you for letting me know! I'll check out Lost Mine of Phandelver first.
Are Artificers a normal class in 5e or are they unique to certain game types?
They are not in the PHB; they were introduced in current form in Tashas’s around 2020
Therefore if your DM does not use Tasha’s it is not legal at your table
Artificers are a bit of a new class to D&D - and there's a bit of complexity to them and I wouldn't suggest them for new players (unless they really really want to play one).
Local Man Watched Vox Machina and discovered Guns were a thing in D&D. Instantly curious to how viable the class is.
Guns arent exclusive to Artificers
Guns are also optional and up to the DM to allow or not in their games.
Guns in general are an optional ruleset that not every DM uses
There is a Gunner subclass of figherer (critical role content, not lega at all tables)
There is a Gunner feat, also optional
Huh, neat.
Artificer itself does have a subclass that sort of has “guns” but not in the way Percy uses them
If you are new, start as a martial class, learn the basics, get comfortable
When you feel more experienced, take a read through Artificer. It is a dense class, take your time
I figured guns would work more single shot than semi auto in D&D.
Will do, cheers Zero.
there are rules that affect how they fire
(take what I say with a grain of salt because I have NO idea how to play)
I'd also assume they're more flintlock-esque because of the general setting but idk
The DMG has various firearms including modern (semi-automatic and fully automatic) and futuristic (with freakin' laser beams).
you have one that allows you to cast disintegrate on people once per long rest as well I believe
Not RAW so let's not go there.
I am sure there is a magic item that does
That's besides the point of this channel.
The item they were referencing is RAW. It’s called the Topaz Annihilator, from Fizban’s Treasury
The magic item’s description says it “resembles a musket” so it is the first non-DMG example of a firearm in core publications
Spelljammer including a lot of pistols and muskets. Even an adventure with a Drow Gunslinger using a pistol, from WD:DH.
Not the first example.
My apologies, you're right. I forgot about the Drow gunslinger. I suppose I meant the first example of one directly accessible for players. Though I'm not sure if that's correct either.
It's still a matter of a DM allowing that specific magic item to be purchased, crafted, or found. But as far as directly player-facing, off the top of my head, sure.
ok so i am new to the sever, how do we play dnd online ?
Depends on the group, I would start looking for one in #find-a-game

thank you
Some people do theatre of the mind, others do roll20, some people use tabletop simulator, etc...
oky
I'm starting a new game 5e. I haven't played since ad&d.. I'm going to try a drow ranger as my first character I've been doing a little research on the drow / ranger combo.. any tips!? is it too complex!? should I start with a basic player... Or just jump right into the pool..? thoughts
Ill let the more experienced players talk, but sus out the unearthed arcana revised ranger ruleset and uh discuss with your dm.
nope, drow-ranger is perfectly simple, all things considered!
quite a bit more complex than a champion standard human fighter, but everything is. By a huge margin.
I was also going to subclass gloom
-
cannot more strongly suggest that you use the optional Ranger features from Tashas Cauldron of Everything
-
any race works for any class in the current ruleset. Tasha’s rules let you assign racial bonuses to any stat
-
gloom is pretty unanimously agreed the strongest ranger subclass
Ranger as it was initially written is kind of awful, so I'd recommend using the variant options presented in Tasha's Cauldron
Always like to drow and their story.. I thought the character should have a backstory was hidden at birth as a female in order not to be a slave was found out and had to run away so now he hunts the female draw race etc etc
cool beans!
Hello
hello stoned yoda
gotcha; plenty of people are. What's gotten you into it?
Hi
Well I’ve always been interested in role playing games and while at work I’ve been trying to find stuff to listen to like podcasts and I found one called dungeons and daddies and it’s really pulled my interest further
Uh Hello?
hi
So I’m new. You could obviously tell since I put my first message in this channel
Welcome!
yeah, welcome
Okay so yeah I’m a newcomer to the game itself but I have been interested for a while
Well I recommend starting by reading the basic rules if you haven't
that can be found here: ?new

Hmm thank you
no problem
is there a beginner friendly build that is good for fighting, healing, and buffing? or is that not possible
Paladin
Lay on hands, stabbing, decent defense, and at 2nd level they get bless and aid at 5th
Smite adds nicely to melee damage
ohh okay thank you
Druid also works really well if you build it right
Paladin is a much better choice for a beginner
Well DnD itself is really not even remotely complicated so even if Druid is the most complicated class I can't see why a beginner couldn't play it really well on their first try
it can be very complicated for a new player
druid is extremely overwhelming for a lot of new players
Really isn't imo
how so? i haven’t played much im more of a dm
thats your opinion?
well yeah
But I am a god gamer after all so I'm naturally high level player on first attempt
druid is a full spellcaster, which is already a lot to manage. They're very heavy on concentration spells, which managing concentration is another layer of complexity. The final thing is wildshape, which is massive, plus a lot of subclasses add additional uses for it
Hello, I'm new to d&d. Because of the same reason as probably most newcomers around this time: Baldur's Gate 3. I never played turn based games, in fact I kind of hated them. Like all those really small characters with circles around them.. I come from Tomb Raider and Far Cry games. 😅
But I really like the game. I always was interested in d&d, because my husband plays it, but I feel too awkward, sitting around a table with other adults, pretending I'm my character. I hope I get over that somehow, since it's online not on location.
Also I'm easily overwhelmed but I need to play a druid, because that's my class in every game. 🥲 I started as ranger in BG3 but as soon as I had figured it out good enough, I switched to druid. there is a lot of new stuff coming along my way. 🥲😅😂
i see
hi, i would like to ask how do i play d&d
i think alot of ppl share the same sentiment w wizard
wizard is also very hard to manage
have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
?tag new roleplaying
personally i would say just pick whatever you like the most
If you have bg3 experience, it'll be a lot easier for you to play a druid, given that you probably already understand how to manage spells
Yes, I understand it. Remembering that I hold a concentration spell before I cast a new one is on another page, but technically I understand it. 😅
Nice
No one’s stopping you from doing what you want.
But if you’re asking what is easier to learn then the answer is not going to be any spellcasting class as there is a et of rules to learn and a spell list to learn
If you want to play druid, just be prepared. Read all the features, the relevant rules, how wildshape works, and have all the wildshape statblocks ready
If that seems daunting, stat simpler. Fighter is that easiest to learn; if you want a dip in spellcasting there’s Ranger
preparing spells, and how wildshape works, and your spell list
Yeah? It's not that hard
This channel is helping new players but, to be as polite as possible, you seem to want to jump into conversations to discuss yourself
And from reading your posts in other channels you dont always grasp the rules either, so maybe its not the best idea to pop in here to say stuff is easy
You know I don't get how I never realized this, but why does point buy when buying points show putting a 14 in a stat as spending 7 points and putting 15 into a stat as 9 points
why not just decrease the points you can spend at that point
it doesn't make sense to me
higher stats cost more
Just cuz I don't know specific rules on something I haven't played yet doesn't mean I can't play a "complicated" character
And I wasn't really speaking about myself. I just disagreed with the notion that Druid isn't beginner friendly since all classes in DnD are honestly very beginner friendly.
Statblocks?
I'm just afraid that I slow down my group if I don't understand something. But playing a druid is what brings me to stick around, because I love all nature and animal related stuff in games.
Play what you find fun yes some classes have more moving parts but your DM should be there to aid you if you get stuck
looked at people looking for groups
would any dms seeing this wanna do a one shot real quick
You're asking if someone could DM an one-shot a couple of hours right now with no preparation?
or i could do it
Advertise in #750812887697588356 or #looking-for-players but not here.
I mean yeah i guess i could dm
Advertise in #looking-for-players then.
The instructions are in #find-a-game
The equivalent of a character sheet for non-player creatures
before i start any players down if i schedual one in an hour
or would people prefer it if i start it in 2?
please use the appropriate channels
FYI mods don’t like you touting for games outside the looking for channels
this channel is dedicated to helping new players, if u want to look for a game advertise it bc u r probably gonna not get any responses here
Again advertise in #looking-for-players and not here. This is a gentle advice. The mods are not as forgiving.
ok ok i will but was wondering if yall would prefer it in 2 ill set it up in 2 hours and post the thing now
nobody here is looking for games at the moment
Howdy!
I'm very new to D&D, although I have played Baldur's Gate 1, 2 and 3 although fairly recently.
I've wanted to play D&D for a long time but I don't really have any friends, let alone friends who play but I thought I might as well just check it out
Anyway, I've built two characters just for the fun of it, and maybe I might use one in a game once I find one. The first character is a Wizard, the other a Bard, I've heard Wizards are complicated, but I'm fairly confident but I could learn it. But I'd like a second opinion, what option should I go for?
It's up to you
both are pretty complicated
however if you understand the spell system bc of bg3 it shouldnt be too bad
Well that's the case I might as well do a Wizard, I've always liked magical characters
Then again Bard has lots of roleplay potential
It's a tough choice honestly
theyre both magical
You could always try and make the characters on DnDBeyond and take a look at their spell lists to see which one you like more
That's actually what I did, they both sound appealing to me, then again it does depend on the tone of the game that I inevitably join. If it's darker more serious I might do the Wizard character I have planned
If it's more light-hearted I might do the Bard
Why would I as a player nees those? 🤔
For your wildshape
But that's still me, the player.. 🤔😅
A player who has turned into what is usually a DM controlled creature
When you wildshape you use the statblock of the creature you turn into
What? Why? I'm so confused. 😵💫
Oh well, of yourse I do. I was just confused about the "NON-player" part.
Do you know how the wild shape ability works?
Usually statblocks are for non-player creatures
When you wildshape, you turn into an animal
Animals are usually DM controlled creatures (so usually they would be NPCs)
Stat block is what shows what an npc can do, but in this case you control one, so the stat block shows what you can do as that animal
When you wildshape you take the form of a non-player creature
Yes, in BG3 at least. Even thogh I'm a bear or wolf, I still control it myself.
Yes you do but you need the stat block
So as nicely put earlier, stat block is just basically a separate character sheet for the animal form you currently control
Oh, I thought that is given. I mean, of course I have different stats then. I was just confused about the NPC bit, because I am no NPC.
And you just need the str dex and con stats plus the attacks and traits as you retain your Wis int and cha scores https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes
I have to look closer at the sheets, when I managed to build my first character.
And there I thought my English is good. 😅 I need to look up so many words now. 🙈
Statblocks are used for NPCs because they get across the important info. Sometimes they can be used by players, such as a class feature statblock, or a spell turning someone into one, or Wildshape turning the druid into one.
Character Sheets are for player characters always.
How does identifying items work?
Depends what and how you're trying to identify it.
There's a spell, aptly named "Identify" which helps you identify items and how to use them.
If you can't use the spell, then usually DMs will allow you to make a skill check to identify what the item is.
Usually arcana for any items that have to do with... well arcana or magic.
Religion check for anything divine or whatever could be associated with a god etc. or has some sort of religious importance.
History check for anything culturally significant.
Basically just tell your DM you'd like to identify the item and they'll tell you what check you need to make.
If it's a mundane item that is common knowledge, you can sometimes do an investigation check to check if the item has any wear or tear... or if it has any markings or perhaps even blood on the item.
Though, even if you notice possible markings/symbols, you'd probably need a further arcana/religion/history check to actually understand the meaning of them.
"The identify spell is the fastest way to reveal an item’s properties. Alternatively, a character can focus on one magic item during a short rest, while being in physical contact with the item. At the end of the rest, the character learns the item’s properties, as well as how to use them. Potions are an exception; a little taste is enough to tell the taster what the potion does."
Taste testing random vials we found in a bad guy's lair and it turns out to be poison
Is this right
Hit Point Maximum At Higher Levels: Hit point maximum at first level + Average hit dice per level after first + Constitution modifier per level after first
No, not quite
Max hp = Max result of hit dice (for first level) + Sum of all rolled or average hit dice across all additional levels + Constitution modifier multiplied by level
Tht would add up to what it said on dnd beyond
Your version wasn't applying constitution modifier at first level
Hit point maximum at first level means max hit die + con mod
Okay, well that's not immediately clear
If i have proficiency on thieves tools or a musical instrument do i get a Proficiency bonus on each roll regarding the tool ? even if its a slight of hand check im already proficient in ?
Your proficiency bonus can’t be added to a single die roll or other number more than once. Occasionally, your proficiency bonus might be modified (doubled or halved, for example) before you apply it. If a circumstance suggests that your proficiency bonus applies more than once to the same roll or that it should be multiplied more than once, you nevertheless add it only once, multiply it only once, and halve it only once.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ProficiencyBonus
While using sleight of hand to pick a lock is a common house rule, the rules actually call for just a regular Dexterity check.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Dexterity
So then thieves’ tools would allow you to add your proficiency bonus instead.
Well then we have missplayed so far. That makes much more sense now. Probably lost in translation. thx
Proficiency with both performance and a musical instrument can happen, though.
In the base rules, one of the two would go to waste.
But there’s optional rules in XGTE that would let the player have advantage or some other added benefit in this situation instead.
Good morning
Hey there!

Good morrow to you as well

How different is the player handbook from the basic rules?
The Player's Handbook contains more information than the Basic Rules. If you want, you can think of the Basic Rules as the free version of the Player's Handbook
The rules are the same. The PHB just has more character creation options.
I am reading through all the basic rules. Afterwards I'll look through the player handbook. There is additional info there, I just wasn't sure if I wasted my time with reading the basic rules first.
just so that im understanding this correctly...i can swap spells whenever my character gains a level and they also gain new spells
What class?
👆 Depends on your class!
i asked in #optimization about the character "fix" since it is my first time, shall i copy it here, or should i not spam in optimization channel at all?
Did you not get an answer there?
i just posted it, and than i saw this channel, it is hard to expect fast answer tbf
You should post discussion in the appropriate channel. This one is focused on the basics, and optimizing is very much not that. Sometimes a response is slow in coming so be patient. There are definitely lulls in the server despite its size.
ouh ok, i just wanted to figure out, if i am doing ok job with character creation, am i picking good things, is there a room for improvment of the character etc... still new in this dnd thing, but thanks for pointing things out. i will keep exploring
"The DC to resist one of your spells equals 8 + your spellcasting ability modifier + your proficiency bonus + any special modifiers."
Are spellcasters always proficient in their own spells?
That's correct!
Your proficiency bonus is included in your spell attack bonus as well.
What word would one use to reference all the classes that wield magic? Mages? "Spellcasters" or "Wielders of magic" is a bit clunky.
when i created character in DND beyon sheet i noticed that it is showcasing +4 on dmg beside 2d6.... why is that?
Spellcasters is a classic choice, but mages is also fairly common.
Spellcasters generally
I think it is more broad
I assume this is next to your greatsword?
yes
I'm working on a custom background. I won't go into details, but "War Mage" sounds way better than "War Spellcaster."
If so: after you hit with a weapon you roll your damage dice (2d6 in this case) and then add your strength modifier (I assume +4 in this case)
The total is the damage dealt!
You can use War Mage
oooooouh.... i had no idea that STR modifier amplify dmg... so if for example i roll 5 and 1... i should o 10 dmg instead of 6... bcs of STR modifier?
That's correct!
Yes
Depending on what weapon you're using to attack you will either add your dexterity or strength modifier
When you roll to see whether or not you hit with your greatsword, you roll 1d20+your strength modifier+your proficiency modifier.
When calculating how much damage you do, it's 2d6+your strength modifier.
do i have to be profficient with that weapon in order to apply modifier?
If you're not proficient with a weapon you don't add your proficiency bonus, but you would still add other bonuses like strength
Proficiency only applies to the attack roll as well. You don't add it to the damage.
gotcha... thanks
When attacking with a weapon, you add your ability modifier--the same modifier used for the attack roll--to the damage. A spell tells you which dice to roll for damage and whether to add any modifiers.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#DamageRolls
Does it look like maps on dndbeyond will become a good product once it's finished? Rivaling roll20 and vtt?
It's still early in alpha. So far it has a lot to catch up just to owlbear.rodeo.
If you want a free VTT, I would recommend either owlbear.rodeo or Roll20 for now.
D&D Beyond's Maps has no collision or lighting.
Aight, good to know
I hope it becomes equal. It would be awesome to be able to drag and drop finished creatures from, for example, the monster manual, into a map from another sourcebook, and have everything be perfectly integrated from the beginning. If they manage to create an equally good tabletop to the best of the others, while having it fully integrated with all their content, that would be an amazing tool.
I'm preparing for a game on roll 20, and it annoys me that I have to manually enter spells that I own on dndbeyond
Yeah I gave up on getting too deep in to roll20 due to the lack of that integration. A smooth map with drag/drop functions and player/monster integration would be sweet.
@cyan iris You can see the roadmap of features planned for Maps on the discovery page
I have never played Dnd, always wanted to, and am interested in being a druid.

Do I find a game first and then create a character, or do I create a character I identify with first and then try to find a game?
My recommendation is to create a character for practice and to have some character concepts you're willing to be flexible on. That way, your character can be bent to work with the game/setting the DM has prepared (but also, ideally, the game flexes to meet you as well).
@outer frost I saw you asking how to make a character in #character-discussion . check out these links below!

Since I am not familiar with the abilities and limitations of the characters, would the D&D Beyond digital character creation be the most helpful? I am sorry for all the questions!
No worries. That's what the channel is for. The D&D Beyond creator helps streamline the process. You won't have access to all the possible official options, but it can be handy. The drawback is that it doesn't teach you how to make a character that well; it's like using a calculator without understanding the math underneath. You got an answer but you don't know why.
Maybe I should just use character sheet then? I wanna know what all my options are.
I need some help so like I have no idea what happened today 😭 my beginners group just started talking about picking a guide?? We picked Randy radish and after that it was just chaos, majority of the boys were just screaming and rolling dices and I couldn’t hear anything and I didn’t get to roll once 😭I’m so so so confused
All I know is that we’re in a room with a bunch of doors or something with a radish as our guide-
If you don't own the books, you don't have access to all the options as is. The character sheet is just as valid, but you don't get any hand-holding, so there's that.
Is there a list of books that I should be looking for to borrow or buy?
Start with the Basic Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules) and play the game to see if you like it before you spend money on it.
This sounds pretty chaotic! Sorry your first session was so difficult to follow. Your DM must have been really leaning into the fun and wacky side of things.
Thank you. Looks like I need to do some reading and playing and look at the digital character thing and the sheet... learn what I can and then come back with questions if need be. 🙂 I appreciate you and your time, thanks!
Honestly yeah 😭 I hope just next time my group isn’t so loud- it’s hard to hear the dm and my hearing isn’t that well in the first place so the overlapping talking doesn’t help
If you're worried, you can always talk to your DM about it! A little bit of loose chatter is sometimes fine, but it's part of the DM's job to provide structure and make sure everyone is following along. Remember, keeping an open dialogue is important! It's a collaborative game after all.
if you want to, we can connect. If we're both new and both want to tackle one of the more difficult classes
That sounds great!

Hi!
I found out ab DnD from the Honor Among Thieves movie, thought it's pretty cool
Heard ab it before, from references in movies and stuff but this one really got me to finally try it
I'm currently making a character
the movie was fun to watch
M2, watching a vid tho bc it's kinda overwhelming
it rlly was
So like, I made a character
the movie itself was pretty good, but what I really loved was how the spells they had were in dnd
Can I get some feedback on his stats and backstory ?
We have #character-discussion for things like that!
and it was really funny to see they way they used certain spells (like the tea cooling)
Oh, cool
Would love to like, learn ab the spells cuz I literally know nothing ab those
I just found the movie amazing, that's what got me into dnd the most, making a character rn
^^ Fr, it was so fun
Flintfox, maybe we could like talk abt characters and stuff in pm or smtnh aswell?
Probably one of the most exciting thing I've seen in my whole life, like it's the feeling of discovering a new kind of adventure
Currently working on my character's visiblity so everyone can see the link, brb
okay!!
hi i'm new here i've played lots of baldurs gate 3 take care of me!:>

The MMO?
Yea
This server is for the tabletop game, not the MMO.
Sorry
DDO does have a Discord, so just Google and get there!
Thank you!
So correct me if I'm wrong...
You can spend time and gold to become proficient in a single armor type, weapon type, language, skill, or tool.
You can also spend approximately 3x the time and gold to earn a feat, IF your DM allows it. A feat can give you light armor proficiency, giving proficiency in all the light armor types. It could also give you 3x skills or tools.
As a wizard, if I want light armor and a shield, I'd need to invest time in learning a proficiency and (preferably) a feat. Until that time I'm basically risking being instantly killed in an ambush, from traps, and a bunch of other ways, due to my low hp.
If you have the downtime and if the DM allows it. Not every adventure/campaign has the weeks of downtime to train in new skills.
I will specify that I'm looking for this when I look for games in the future. The DM I'm going to play with said he's cool with it.
Don't worry too much, low level adventures are tuned with low health pools in mind. It's rare that something will kill you outright, and you can always be prepared if you're unsure about a situation.
Just try not to stand on the front lines of combat if you can help it!
I'm going to purposefully stay a bit behind the rest of the party.
When not investigating for traps in a dungeon, that is
If you're a wizard you probably want to let the rogues/artificers investigate for traps...
Remember that the party is suppose to consister of different classes to fill and balance out the various roles. One PC shouldn't be able to do everything (despite what bards and artificers think...).
Fast question before I leave my lunch break time friends
My high int and wis lets me percieve and investigate. I can't disarm the traps, but I can find them. No?
That's up to you.
(And the dice)
In order to determine skills, (I'm a newbie DM) does every player character get their class skills as default and then you use your skill selection (2+int modifier) as extras?
Like every fighter knows craft and ride etc etc
What edition are you playing?
3.5
Your intelligence doesn't actually affect which skills you pick. Your race, background, and class determine skills in 5th edition.
Ah.
Then that's for #dnd-elder-editions.
So, I'm looking for a game for beginners in #looking-for-players cuz ppl said the best way to learn DnD is to play it.
But like, idk what stuffs like owl bear combat and all those terms mean
Did the post mention "owlbear.rodeo"?
No, just "Owl bear combat system"
I looked up what a FoundryVTT is and it's some virtual tabletop
I assume owl bear too ?
Looked it up and got the Owlbear from DnD: Honor Among Thieves instead
They're likely referring to this:
https://www.owlbear.rodeo/
(Oh hey, I guess it's back to the original URL.)
Owlbear.rodeo is a virtual tabletop (VTT) that uses a web browser (so no software needed on your end).
I just got back from a session 0 it was my first ever session and I made a Goliath barbarian

Nice!

Is there any tips o need for making a character
What kind of tips are you looking for? Questions about classes?
Anything really like what would be better for a beginner and how to do stats and stuff
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

Ahh, tabletop website ?
So, I was looking for a game
And outta nowhere, someone from a work-related server said they're a DM and wanted to host DnD events but no one knows how to play it
So yeah, wish them luck (They/Them pronouns) teaching us how to play DnD HAHA
Not too complicated! It gives you a lot of options as you level up, but it's fairly straightforward
Ok thanks
Jackpot!
My old work had a weirdly high number of DnD players. Then they laid off 90% of the staff, and all that was left was the DnD players. Shows we make a high calibre of worker 😄
But seriously, if there';s a bunch of newbies it makes things a lot easier, i think. You are all in there together. And if your friend is struggling - well they can join the server and get some advice in #dm-discussion
2 have played DnD before, I think one of them's a pro.
The rest, we don't know anything. Still trying to figure it out.
So can someone help me set up my character
Yo would anyone be willing to endure teaching 2 bunglenuts (theres 1 more fella that kinda knows what he doing) how to play dnd cuz we tried but half assed all our campaigns n we wanna try it for real so like Ig we lookin for a real simple one shot
My first campaign went nowhere
fr
I didn't even know what I was doiny
We had like 10 lol
Currently I just need to know how to create my character

Goofy ahh bot
Good luck
I tried and they started without me
Ooof
womp womp
iskr
Rip
Can't find one around my time
Shame, I really wanna get into DnD
Eh, I'll shelf my character and prolly wait for someone to invite me to play DnD
Check local schools or game stores
And giving up after looking for a couple hours is really not long enough
Don't have any of those in my school
And like, there's no game stores with DnD cuz most of them sell PS & Xbox stuffs and that's it
Try card shops
100% of the time they'll do d&d
What have you got so far? Where exactly are you stuck?
that one books store chain in there seems to sell some TT games
TBH, it's not just a couple hours. Like, I've been wanting to play DnD since the movie came out (2022 ?) but just can't find any. I was looking for something to watch and the movie popped up and it revived the idea to finally get into DnD again.
Wdym card shops
Not that kind of game store
I wrote this Looking for Group/Game guide that covers an array of options: #third-party-tools-archive message
stores that sell Magic cards, comics, board gamed and such
Yeah uhh, idk anything remotely like that
U could probably even just google or yelp dungeons and dragons in your area
Thx! Opening it rn
honestly from all TTRPGs DnD is easiest to find as if store has TTRPGs they most likely have DnD
Only got the movie's articles and stuff
Also, read it and it seems like Discord is the best option for me
Cuz we don't do DnD in my area, we only do Monopoly in terms of board games.
There are multiple Discords with LFG channels, though.
Lived in 3 different countries, and I think I've seen DnD hostings in bookstores back in Malaysia
Where I live rn, no DnD at all.
idk if anyone else has mentiones, but Roll20 is great for looking for games if you dont mind doing voice/video and there's the r/pbp on reddit you can look for text only or pbp games
What's Roll20, a site ?
a place where you can look for DnD games or host your own
https://locator.wizards.com/ click stores and enter your town
"No events found for the location, distance and filters specified" 💀
Warhorn
Meetup
Facebook
The point is to expand your search not give up
Facebook ?
Also, idk what those other 2 are. Are they specifically for DnD or are they social medias ?
Did you select store not events
Lemme try again
Both are sites for finding gatherings
Ok, I found 6 stores
One is in the same area as where I live
But like, no DnD. Magic the Gathering and some other board games idk.
But it's "Premium", must be something right ?
Go in and ask
What kind of craftsperson would be able to alter an orb (arcane focus) into a pendant or a wristband of sorts? (Assuming the DM would allow it) Jeweler / armorsmith?
Jeweler seems like the most likely answer, but that's gonna be up to your DM
Can someone tell me, what the small numbers mean?
Can you be more specific? I don't understand what you are asking
I just realized there are no pictures allowed. 😅
You can link to a site like Imgur, but you should preface any links with context.
When I roll dice in the D&D App, there are 3 results.
A big one at the bottom and two small ones above it.
What do they say?
What skill / attack are you rolling
That’s previous rolls they disappear after a while
Got my first set of dice. My first roll was a nat 1. How screwed am I? XD
5%
Not at all. The d20 is swingy as all get-out.
"
5" means the number rolled on the dice was a 5
"= 5" means after adding all modifiers, your total was 5
"1d20" means the type of dice you rolled was one 20-sided dice
No, I checked. I rolled for stealth several times and then one time for survival and the two small numbers were stealth and survival. Also I rolled 8 and 17 and those two numbers were 11 and 9.
Those are 3 performance checks
But what do the 3 and the 7 mean in my picture?
That you rolled a performance check whose result was 3.
And then one whose result was 7.
Those were the last 2 skill checks you made. They just haven't gone away yet
And now the latest check got a total of 5.
If you were to make another roll at that point, the 5 would move up the list and the new roll would display at the bottom.
Wait, the last time I rolled for that specific skill, not the last time I rolled my dice?
Nope. Any roll you make.
Its the last time you rolled your dice. In this screen shot, you just happed to have made 3 perfomance checks in a row
That's just a short history of your most recent rolls.
Except I don't.
Its right there. We can see it
No. It's not. The numbers don't add up. I don't understand that.
Consulting with my DnD pro friend
She doesn't know shit, she said she just roll with the DM and follow the story
Can you roll an Arcana check? When the result pops up, what's the number on the far right?
And her tip is "No magic" cuz she said you gotta remember the spells and it sucks and all
Then roll an Athletics check.
You should then see Arcana above your Athletics check with the total it showed before.
Like here for example. I never ever even once rolled fir medicine before. So where do the numbers come from?
If that's true, then you are expiriencing a glitch
I hope so. Otherwise it'll probably mean, I'm going insane. 😅🙈
It may be that your app or your phone is clicking the button multiple times, when you press it once, or something like that
I'm just gonna f around and find out, lol
I'm looking for a DnD game in #looking-for-players, if you wanna host one for beginners DM me
Ok, something is really off. I just rolled 3 times Religion in a row.
https://i.imgur.com/5Cu3RvC.jpg
these are 3 individual button clicks with nothing in between?
Is there a particular reason why Oathbreaker paladin is in DM guide instead of PHB or any other source book?
Oathbreaker paladin was designed as an example of an "evil" subclass, and is only meant to be allowed in games by special permission of the DM
The first one was an 18 but it shows 9+2.
Or maybe for WoTC to sell more DM books, we will never truly know 😄
I think you guys understand my confusion now. 😅🙈😂
Ah I see that now. Your D20 doens't match the displayed number. There is definitely some sort of glitch or error happening here
Omg, yes! I switched back to the basic black one, now it makes sense!
Should I report that somewhere? It's the new BG3 dice set I got offered for free on the website.
I'm not sure. #ddb-feedback or #ddb-support would probably be the best place, but I think there might be a formal bug report form you can fill out somewhere
The short campaign I'm about to start is a homebrew creation as far as I understood it. We start the game with 2 feats. It probably won't last more than a few weeks, but the DM seems cool and is willing to work with players on their desires for the game. I want to take it to the next lvl. Once I've played a few campaigns, I will be looking for a DM that can host games for a long time and we get to do stuff from our imagination without technically breaking any rules, just expanding the game. I'm not sure how many DMs build an expanded world and let their players go slightly wild in interacting with the world.
Thanks for your help, figuring this out. I was doubting my saneness (is this a word?) already 😅
Oh, it's sanity I think. 🙈
AI tells me this:
Base Attack Bonus (BAB): +9 (for a level 9 Paladin).
Strength Modifier (STR): +5 (since your STR is 20).
Greatsword +2 Bonus: +2 (from your magical Greatsword).
Proficiency Bonus: +0 for this calculation since you mentioned that your character has proficiency in martial weapons and not additional proficiency bonuses.
So, the calculation for your to-hit bonus for melee attacks with your Greatsword +2 is:
BAB (+9) + STR modifier (+5) + Greatsword +2 bonus (+2) + Proficiency bonus (+0) = +16.
But my character sheet still says +11
What am I missing here?
You’re missing that AI isn’t the best for learning dnd
I have tried 🤣
And BAB isn’t a dnd thing
BAB is a 3.5E thing
Your attack is str mod (5) plus prof at lvl 9 (4) plus 2 from the magic weapon = 11
Alright, and what makes +10 from 2d6+10 dmg calculation?
As Enoki said, don't rely on AI to teach you D&D.
Nothing, it's wrong.
You only add your Str modifer and any magic weapon bonus to your damage roll.
That from D&D Beyond?
Yes, I can link you the character if you are willing to look at it
Post it in #character-discussion
I think it's Aura of Hate related
Yup.
Is it possible to remove a shield proficiency I added on dndbeyond character creator? I was just testing stuff out on my character, but I'm not supposed to have it
Armor/shield proficiency comes from your character class (and a few exceptions with race)
I added it manually and can't seem to remove it
Ask in #ddb-support
ty
random question but can mimics only become chests or, any object
There are many different types of mimics. The standard mimics can mimic inanimate objects that roughly the same size as it, be it chest or door.
Been awhile since I actually played but interested in trying to get back in to it if anyone has any available games and is willing to work with a "newbie" lmk
Check #find-a-game
sorcerer
You can swap a spell when you gain a level, then.
And you get new spells at most (but not all) levels.
Is a druid a good idea for my first dnd campaign?
You can if you want
But if you’re asking for advice, i would say no, it is a challenging class for a new player
Druid can be quite difficult but it's far from undoable
It is both a full caster , so you will need to learn spellcasting, and has a shapeshifting feature that demands you keep track of more info
There are a few druid subclasses that provide alternatives to shapeshifting, though, so you could sidestep part of that complexity if you choose.
But for a lot of people, the shapeshifting is a big part of the appeal.
Ok, it's just u didn't find anything interesting besides a druid or rogue
Between the two, rogue is inarguably simpler.
Well a Rogue is on the easier side imo
But whether simpler is better is up to you to decide.
You can try rogue to learn the basics and then make a druid when you’ve gotten some experience
I want to play something that can better adapt to any campaign because my dm hasn't told my crew the main idea of it yet
Personally, I like building characters that complement the theme of the campaign.
I will take that into consideration before I play in the campaign
As a rogue, you’ll have alot of skills that are useful outside of combat so that might be interesting for you
in combat, you are almost exclusively a damage dealer
If I was in your boat, I’d wait for more info.
I will try a rogue just so I'm not lost in my own character
But it couldn’t hurt to build both a druid and a rogue.
At least in broad strokes.
At the very least, it’ll get you some practice with building characters.
And then when you learn more about the campaign, you can work with your DM to make a choice and add any final details.
On that makes sense
Character building can help with basic understanding sometimes just make sure you're not getting features mixed up between them
Thank you
Is there a way to find an online dnd group
Yeah, lots of ‘em!
If you want to look here on this server, #find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
Thank you
I know very little about D&D but I want to learn about it because it seems so cool so can I just join a game and they can help teach me or is there something else I should do first?

how do i find a dm?
Check out #find-a-game
Yo be honest I’m new and I barely know anything about DND can someone help me/teach me?
long story short, check the basic rules, ask to clarify further stuff.

I have and I still don’t get it
Well, what specifically? Feel free to ask those clarifying questions
what part/s
in general? or something specifically? mechanically or creatively?
I still do need help
Like all of it I’m bran new to dnd
I need to speed run making my character sheet
I can't remember a few things so I ask for assistance
I read it over again and the dice roles I don’t get
Well... All I can say is, read through the basic rules. If something specific confuses you, ask
Ok thanks you
What dice rolls? attack, damage, saves, checks, hp, there's a lot of times dice are rolled
All of it
that's too vague for me to figure out what needs to be explained
Can you help me?
I just need help with basing stats and a few other things
Why don't you just ask here? That's that point of this channel.
Theoretically won't take over a hour should it go right
I just need some sort of vc assistance
I just need it ready for tommorow via tonight
Not everyone has an hour to give a private tutor.
Aware of that but I am only asking
Like how to attack I know how to check your stats but not like saves and hp,damage and all of that
Well I did a few hours ago
No luck
Any use for Ceremony outside of pure roleplaying purpose
Like if I got into a game and I learned along the way I think I can get the hang of it or like and example
This is how this works
You have only a few spell casts during the beginning and you can attack anything in your radius
Weapons radius to say
I’m a fighter
oh my
reach*
I got a question. I'm new haven't played DnD before... I played the DnD beyond
Don't you do that to me mr
Is there anything similar?
DNDBeyond isn't a 'game' - it's just a toolset for DND.
I just named it another way
Oh ok
🤔 I'm still trying to get assistance myself
Any use for Ceremony outside of pure roleplaying purpose?
which can be misleading as a radius is a specific thing in the rules
Fair enough
Some people don't catch on
Ooh ok thank you
I would have used beyond for my sheet if I understood the sheet
The sheet is confusing me as it has more stuff
making holy water, 7 day lockdown of no reanimating a specific corpse
Ok so how do I make a character and once I’m done where do I find a game
Do you have a local shop
Like a card shop for example
Wha?
Alot of card shops have events for this sort of thing
No
I've got some free time... If both of you are ok with it, I could bring you both into a voice call and screenshare creating a character so I can help demonstrate things?
I mean like a game online I guess
That is greatly appreciated,Give me a second
Can go through our logs on this sevrer
Oh I can do it on my own my bro I got the character creation I’ll ask if I have anymore questions
hopefully it'd help with your specific inquiries
You have and I’m truly thankful
I am ready when you are
there's no VC here so check your direct messages
mhm
Hello!
I am completely new to DND lol

The bot post above has some helpful links for getting started, including a link to the free basic rules, and a great tutorial series on YouTube
Oh, Okay, Thanks
After you’ve gone through some of these resources, if you have any specific questions, we’d be happy to answer anything!
I’m fairly new, I’ve played a couple of campaigns with friends but they didn’t explain things very well. I also haven’t played in a while so I’m “rusty”, and wanted to know if there were any tips for people getting back into things as a player.
Same here I wanna know more about everything but don't lol.
Try not to absorb it all at once. Look at the rules but also watch video explainers and games to see it in practice.
Thanks for the tip, it’s been a long time since I’ve played and the last campaign was with a “friend” who is basically a toddler temper tantrum after they get told no to thousands of toys because we did something stupid
Yeah, another good thing to bear in mind: find a group you gel with, which may take time and multiple dead-ends. But there are so many people out there you should find others whose wants from the game align with yours.
what should I put for Faith, Im assuming it means religon, but theres probably several DND religons
Ask your DM. If you don’t have a DM, it doesn’t matter.
I might just put greek mythology because why not
But it’ll usually refer to the particular god you follow rather than a full-on religion. But that’ll vary from DM to DM.
@golden sphinx, I saw an ad you had posted under #looking-for-players, and I was intrigued.
oh ok
@heavy perch please use the threads below those adverts or private messages to get in conntact with people in the looking for channels.
Im having trouble figuring out how the commands work
It happens all good :)
#find-a-game has a explanation in how to use the commands. Just read it carefully and it should become clear :)
it keeps telling me the interactions failed
is the bot down or something, or am I doing something wrong
Stupid question, but, does 3d10 mean I roll 3 times with a 10 sided dice?
yep
And why do I roll 3 times?
"This does 3d10 damage" translates to "This does X damage (to determine X, roll 3 10-sided dice)"
Like, in general. Why roll more then once?
because it's 3d10, not 1d10
Ohh.
it keeps telling me interaction failed
Make sure you have embeds enabled and your Discord client is up to date.
So if I roll 3d10 and I get 3 random numbers,
How do I turn the 3 numbers into X? (Times, add, subtract?)
The Bot might have some problems. In the interim I would go through #looking-for-players and respond to games posted there in the threads if you find a game that speaks to you
Just add.
if you roll a 3, a 5, and a 7, you add them up (to 15 in this case) and for that instance, it's done 15 damage.
Okay.
And how Do I tell if it's a hit or a block? Or is it always a hit
it worked
An attack roll needs to meet or exceed a target’s armor class.
So, what's this coming from
You really should be reading the basic rules which explain combat
I've been reading some of it. Mainly through the app.
But hey, I won't bother asking questions here next time.
Ok, so after you’ve read it, you can ask questions here. This channel isnt intended to replace reading it, it is for clarification
is this from a spell, or is it from a monster, what's it from specifically
I assume I have to wait a while for my looking for DM to get posted
Hello everyone
hello
I have found my way here by surfing the web as humans say it
Some spells last 1 min. How long is a round? 10 seconds?
Six
How do you play lol

Start with some helpful guides
okay - and math validation - To hit modifier is proficency (+2 at lvl 1) plus attribute modifier (so +3 with 16 strength for example) - for a total of +5 at level 1 in this example with 16 stat. But damage done modifier is only the attribute modifer, so the +3 in the above example. The proficency only helps hit, not do more damage. Correct?
Bingo.
Yahtzee
What would be the best way to sort my rogues stats using pointbuy
Lets take this opportunity to teach
What are the rogues features and what stat fuels them?
What type of weapon are they going to use and what stat does it rely on?
What kind of armor does a rogue wear and what star does it rely on?
Going through these considerations will tell you what your character needs to function
So focus on dexterity?
Your armor, weapon, stealth, sleight of hand/thieves tools are all based on that so…
Seems pretty important for a rogue
And I figured out a combo I could use if I get my dex high enough
as a martial you’ll also want something to help you survive…
Like what?
Is there a stat that affects…your life?
Con
Assassin
I read through them before and thanks to the first feat assassin gives if I roll high enough on initiative I could basically always hit enemies with sneak attack depending if I hit them anyway
Since with assassinate if a creature hasn't taken their turn yet I have advantage
Which lets me then use sneak attack
I'm correct aren't I?
yes
So if I focus on dex to get a high initiative modifier I could basically always have advantage
To begin combat, yes
and if that fails, just use your DEX + 2x Stealth to hide behind the nearest object and pop out somewhere else
On DnD beyond, is it possible to include a whole full body art of a character? Or is the head shot the only thing that can be seen
You can upload any photo for the character art
Where do I do that, cause all I see is the character icon which is tiny
You can only upload an icon, you can't upload a larger image
Hi I am new to dnd and table top games, I started just this week by getting the starter set from my local game shop and I have been trying to study up on the rules and most of it make sense to be but it also at the same time doesn’t.
It hard for me to practice and to practice correctly when I don’t really know properly what I’m doing nor having a company to play with

You may need to open your character sheet on the webpage go to the appearance tab and there should be a + to add stuff
This would be better suited to #ddb-support, but appearances isn't editable through the builder or mobile app, it can only be edited through the website character sheet
feel free to ask questions as you go!
Ok well one question on mind…. I will use the zombie stat block for my example question.
Actions: SLAM. Melee weapon attack: +3 to hit, reach 5ft., one target. Hit: 4(1d6 + 1) bludgeoning damage.
I am confused on what the +3 to hit means aswell as what the 4 is before (1d6 + 1), I know that that’s what I have to roll but what is the 4?
The 4 is an average value for DMs to use
To make it faster
The +3 is what is added to the attack roll
Rather than rolling damage, the dm can just use the average value of 4 damage instead
Yeah the zombie has a +3 modifier to their attack roll for that attack, so when you roll the d20 for the attack roll you add the 3
So in other words it’s the zombies base melee attack damage?
The 4? Or the +3?
4?
There were two different things you’d been asking about
Sorry
+3 to hit means, when they make the attack roll (d20), they add +3 for their total attack's result.
4 (1d6 + 1) means it does an average of 4 damage, by doing 1d6+1 damage. This is both for a DM to at a glance gauge roughly how much that attack does on average, and a DM can just do "17 to hit? 4 damage. 13 to hit? miss. 19 to hit, 4 damage." to go faster for example
So this is the “base” attack damage?
not exactly
Dammit….
their damage is just, 1d6+1. A DM can just use the average if they want to skip the roll, read, math, and then result
Ok that makes sense
So if I had three zombies slamming a paladin, I could just speed through by saying each hit = 4 damage, rather than each hit = roll a die, read it, add 1, and then that's how much damage it does.
but if a DM is able to just click buttons, like with the combat tracker, it's as easy as click button read total result
You mean like on a digital track and not physical dice?
yeah. In the DNDBeyond combat tracker, any statblocks owned by such a DM using the combat tracker, they can pull up the statblock of the zombie attacking their victim, and just automatically roll the dice on a click. No pickup, roll, read, it's just click, wait a second, and the total result pops up
Tis an example of an option. Often, a DM will use the roll for the sheer act of it being a consistent rule, made an easier choice via automation.
Sometimes, something may occur to prompt a DM otherwise. A camp full of 30 bandits... would be hellish to actually roll every single damage die for every hit. Or, they might be on the plane of order fighting constructs who do consistent average damage.
That would be hell
Indeed. But it's also a nice thing for a DM to go 'alright, assume I hit every attack, this one does 4, 4, 5... and then this one does 6, 7, and 13... that's too much damage to throw at my low level party'
Well it would essentially be suicide in general for a low level party to take on that many wouldn’t it?
yes, there's this concept of "action economy" which basically says
1 commoner isn't scary.
9999 commoners could eventually kill a tarrasque probably.
Hahha that’s one way to put it
'death by a thousand cuts' is definitely a thing no matter the CR. Apart from Pixies. Pixies have no damage.
I haven’t faced any yet
Tbh I haven’t even had a proper campaign yet as I don’t have anyone yet to play with

You and me both
I wanna make sure I understand what all the dice are used for
D20 saves, checks, skill checks, life saves, action roles, rolling to hit, initiative rolls,
D12 damage
D10 damage
D8 damage
D6 damage
D4 damage
Is there anything else
The d20 is use for ability checks (which includes iniatiative), attack rolls, and saving throws
All the other dice are mainly used for damage, but also for many other things such as regaining charges on magic items, determining random effects of spells, rolling percentile effects etc
"Skill checks" aren't a thing, that's just another name for an ability check
Also I'm not sure what you mean by "life saves"? Unless you mean death saving throws which are still saving throws
And again, not sure what 'action rolls' are?
The last dm I had had me roll to do things like picking stuff up is that not normal
"picking stuff up" wouldn't normally require an ability check
So it’s not normal
When you say "picking stuff up", do you mean "I pick up this rock from the ground" or "I try and lean down from my horse and grab the orb from off the plinth as I dash by"?
I guess depends on what you were picking up under what context
I could have someone roll a stealth check to pick something up from a pile of rubble near sleeping enemies, for example
Because the former would not normally require an ability check, while the latter might
Ability checks are used when there is a meaningful chance of failure or success
Yeah it was usually objects that were in hard to reach places
Yes, than that's fairly typical, but would still be an ability check
Edge cases aside, there are only three types of d20 rolls:
- Attack rolls
- Saving throws (including death saving throws)
- Ability checks (any roll that isn't an attack roll or saving throw that uses an ability score)
Ok thank you

i got mastiff by rolling 20 on animal handle... but when i leveled to lvl2.. according to dm my mastiff stayed at lvl1... is there anything i can do to level that dog up and how to approach that?
It’s not a class companion so it won’t lvl with you
Your DM is already kinda houseruling by letting you take a pet like that, with just animal handling. Most pets come via class abilities, like with Ranger or Warlock (Pact of the Chain), and some of those have improvements as you level up.
So if they are letting you tame beasts ..tame a bigger one!
Tell your DM the sidekick rules and ask him if you can "earn" that mastiff as a sidekick after possibly getting it awakened. But be prepared to dedicate rp and resources to this. Hardly any DM will give it to you just like that.
is there any general guide for bloodhunter mele that i can follow and not screw up character big time?
Hello 👋
Hi
Think theres one on dndbeyond
Pretty well an article for most classes and subclasses there
oooooh i love this one. thank you
thank you
Other than heroforge, is there somewhere else that I can make and download a stl of my character? Something that I can 3d print myself?
The only thing I can think of would be more generic modeling software like Blender or AutoCAD. Heroforge is the only one I know of that specifically tailored to D&D Minis. Though, you might get a better answer if you ask this question in #third-party-tools-archive
Ok. Thanks. I'll check that out. And I was afraid that they might be the only ballgame in town.
#dnd-minis might also have some good insight!

i am still confused, when wielding two weapon sword, and have feat Great Weapon Fighting, do i reroll 1s and 2s on if i hit rolls d20, or i reroll 1s and 2s on damage dices 2d6?
TitanCraft, Eldritch Foundry, ANVL are three options a quick googlin' turned up.
When you roll a 1 or 2 on a damage die for an attack you make with a melee weapon that you are wielding with two hands, you can reroll the die
It's for the damage dice only
thank you dosh
1 more question, if i roll both lets say dmg rolls 1st one 2, 2nd one 2... do i reroll both, or just 1?
Let's say you swing with a greatsword, which uses 2d6 as its damage dice
The result is 1 and 1. You can choose to use your Great Weapon Fighting to reroll both.
But, if you reroll them and your reroll results as 1 and 6, you can't keep rerolling that second 1.
gotcha, so i can choose how many dice i will reroll, but that rerolled one is final one and can not be rerolled again. thanks
Correct
Their use of singular "a die" in that statement makes the most literal interpretation kinda scummy for great swords or mauls.
ouh... so it is debatable? 😄
Not really no
Damage die is exclusively singular
Damage dice is plural and indeterminate
"A weapons damage dice" encompases weapons with 1+ damage dice
"A weapons damage die" encompases a single damage die
I heard/read somewhere that you can switch out which spells you know when you level up. Is the same true for cantrips?
It will say this in your class features, it's not a general rule.
I'm going to play as a wizard. I will re-read the page on wizards
It's not something that Wizards can do in the base books. Tasha's Cauldron of Everything added it as an Optional feature.
Wizards can change their spells at the end of a long rest. Per player handbook anyway
Specifically, that past 3rd Level, Wizards can switch out one cantrip when they take a long rest. This is however up to the DM.
They can change their prepared spells from their known list, but they cannot change their known list of spells when they take a long rest. It is only in the optional rule from Tasha's that they get the option to do that with cantrips.
I will pick up Tasha's Cauldron of Everything at some point. Ty
Yes, good point.
GWF (Great Weapon Fighting) feat applies for bonus dmg as well?
Tasha's added a lot of stuff for swapping spells and abilities. Really it was just codifying somethign that a lot of people were doing anyway - it's not like most people use that for powergaming, as much as just trying something out and dropping stuff that doesn't work for them.
Do you mean the Great Weapon Master Feat, or the Great Weapon Fighting fighting style
Great Weapon Fighting style
two different things.
GWFfs
With Great Weapon Fighting, you can reroll any damage die associated to the melee attack. A Sage Advice clarification stated that this wouldn't apply to the damage dies of other features you are triggering with that attack, like Divine Smite or a Smite spell:
If you use Great Weapon Fighting with a feature like Divine Smite or a spell like hex, do you get to reroll any 1 or 2 you roll for the extra damage?
The Great Weapon Fighting feature—which is shared by fighters and paladins—is meant to benefit only the damage roll of the weapon used with the feature. For example, if you use a greatsword with the feature, you can reroll any 1 or 2 you roll on the weapon’s 2d6. If you’re a paladin and use Divine Smite with the greatsword, Great Weapon Fighting doesn’t let you reroll a 1 or 2 that you roll for the damage of Divine Smite.
So this statement, (I would assume is a SAC entry) implies that GWF does let you reroll both d6s if they are both 1 or 2
Personally I think that's the better interpretation, yes. It does after all say "a damage die", and not "one damage die", and that SAC does go as far as saying "any"
Yea, I'm the type of guy that always uses a greatsword on my GWF PCs for the optimization
Hey guys, where do I go to make a 5e character sheet?
Character Sheets
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
do characters naturally have low hp, because I made my character and he has 8 hp
is that normal, or?
Yes and no? Depends on the character class and your Constitution stat.
Im a light elf sorcerer
What's your Con stat?
12
That sounds like your health is actually a bump higher than normal? Unless I forgot how to even calculate this.
First level, you're given the maximum roll of your die, so 6
sorc health is 1d6 + constitution
Then modifiers are Ability Score minus 10, with the result divided by 2, so your mod should actually be 1
So really your health should be 7 unless I missed something
it says 8/8 hit points
Draconic bloodline sorcerer?
This was done with a program?
ddb probably
yeah I wasnt given much options lol
Yeah, their Draconic Resilience feature increases your max hp.
I just didnt want to be in a game and get one shot because I literally have 8 hp
unless thats considered good to some standard
It's not good, but it's normal.
Stand in the back
Technically good, considering 12 Con is technically above average
Probably half the characters in the game start with < 10.
But technically, stand behind any party members that have a big shield or get incredibly mad
really new to this whole DnD and was looking to dip my toes into the world of it any tips for someone super new

hi hi! can someone explain two-weapon fighting to me?
i know basically you're holding a mainhand weapon and an offhand weapon
and that you get 1 basic strike with mainhand and offhand
and then i know with feats like extra attack (from blood hunter) you get a 3rd hit as a bonus action
but can someone explain to me statwise how that works?
i'm trying to read the player's handbook or dm manual about it but there's just... so... much... content 🥲
Wouldn’t it be offhand attack as a bonus action, so you’d have to decide if you wanna do extra attack or offhand attack. That’s how I usually treat it as
So normally if you have a light weapon in one hand, and another light weapon in the other, after you make an attack you can use a bonus action to attack again, but don't get to add your ability modifier to damage.
And yep, if you have extra attack, that means you can do all your normal attacks with your attack action, then use the bonus action for the two weapon fighting 'offhand' attack (It's colloquially called offhand, but really it could be either weapon, but technically should be the weapon in the other hand to the one you just attacked with. But you can chose either weapon to attack with during your attack action).
Yeah. Normally people usually choose whichever one does the most damage or gives a better debuff
and that bonus action attack, with extra attack, is the one without the ability modifier yeah? :o
So let's say you're a 5th level fighter holding two light weapons, with extra attack:
Standard action (Attack)
Attack 1 with weapon 1
Attack 2 with weapon 2
Bonus Action (Two weapon fighting attack)
'Offhand' Attack with weapon 1, don't add dex/str to damage.
Yeah, basically if it isn’t a feat you don’t add your mod
The fighting style 'Two-weapon fighting' allows you to add your ability modifier to the 'offhand' attack's damage.
The feat 'dual weilder' lets you two-weapon fight with weapons that aren't Light.
I have a question tho. Besides a long rest, what other ways can magic users replenish spell slots?
thank you!! that makes so much sense :D
Those counts as feats tho, no?
It’s like a passive feat you choose at level 2, like protection for fighters
Depends on the class. Some can get a few slots back on short rest. But most only get back on long rest. Your class will tell you which.
There are some items, like pearl of power, that gives you a slot back.
That sucks lol, thank you for answering
Feats are specifically things you can take instead of an Ability Score Increase.
Class features, like fighting styles, aren't 'feats' in that way.
i have one last question, is there a specific channel for VTT help? :o like roll20/foundry/etc?
i'm not sure how to set up the "offhand" weapon damage on roll20 but would like to ask in the right channel!
Ahh I had those mixed up, my mistake
So Dual Wielder is a feat. You can only take it if your DM allows you to take feats, and you can get it instead of increasing an ability score on certain levels.
But 'Two-weapon fighting style' is not a feat. It is an optional class feature part of a class, and only some classes (like Fighter and Ranger) get it.
#third-party-tools-archive I believe can help with that
tysm!! :D
Hi
Are these stats good for a level 1 rogue when using pointbuy
Strength:8
Dexterity:18
Constitution:16
Intelligence:12
Wisdom:11
Charisma:10
Not entirely. You will need high Charisma.
How should I change it?
I disagree: not all rogues need charisma. Plus, we have #character-discussion for getting feedback on builds!
Fair.
I can't find that normally
I never see it
Now it's on there
You can select what channels you do/don't see by visiting id:customize.
Yes, very
Hey quick question, how does Fog Cloud affect combat?
Or, does it not affect it at all
It creates a heavily obscured area, which means anyone in its range has the Blind condition.
Oh cool! And does my Tiefling's ability to see through the dark render me immune or does it have no effect?
The spell acts as normal; darkvision doesn't affect your ability to see in that kind of environment. Your character would also be Blind.
Interesting, thanks!
Hi, I apologize if this is the wrong channel but I'm new to DnD and I hope to get more involved in the lore and the community and just about everything. From what I've seen just about everyone is pretty great so I'm hopeful. (Sorry, I'm also super scared to say anything)
Welcome. Do you have specific questions? Otherwise, don't feel obligated to participate. I learn a ton just by watching conversations happen without necessarily contributing to them.
Oh I don't have any specific questions right away. But I imagine I'll have some soon, I'm trying to get more into the universe and the community at the moment. Thank you by the way.
I would love to participate in as much as I can, but I'm terribly afraid of talking to people so I'll figure it out.
Well, however you decide to engage, I hope you enjoy!
I'm sure I will! Thank you!
How'd you get an 18? That typically isn't possible with point buy.
It could be if you were using a Custom Lineage character, and took a feat that gave +1 dex, but yeah that generally seems like something is wrong
Hello guys, I have a question, me and my friends are getting into DnD and im the dungeon master. Should I improvise a campaign, have a completely planned out one or just have certain key points
The third one would be my recommendation of those options, though I do think running a pre-written adventure makes more sense for a first-time DM. Just a suggestion, though.
The Lost Mine of Phandelver is free with all D&D Beyond accounts. It was written for new players and DMs in mind.
Thankd
Also could I be a player in my own campaign
Good point
I mean, you could be, but it's recommended to not do so.
Ok
Yeah, that’s a delicate dance. I’d avoid it if you can.
Can I like what im planning as the key points or should i just dm someone who has been a dm about it?
Ok, duly noted
I'm not sure I understand the question. Can you rephrase it?
Show you guys whatbim planning for my campaign
DMPCs are frowned upon because you as the DM have knowledge the other players don't have, like where the monsters and treasure are.
We have #dm-discussion for that kind of thing.
Oh ok
Yeah i can easily see myself using my knoledge about whats gonna happen to my advantage
Let's move this over to #dm-discussion ...
Hi hi, I just joined here a little moment ago. I’ve been a player in two ill-fated campaigns some time ago in high school but I recently got super invested in D&D again, critical role, bought the main three books, etc. and now I’m reaaally wanting to try my hand at being a Dungeon Master. Now the only problem is…not having anyone to do that ‘experiment’ with. Any suggestions or tips on where to start..?
Hey, just want to put it out there, but names Soi, and I've been DM'ing for a few months and played for only like a week or so. Decided to join the discord because I want to find ideas that I can use in my campaign right now; and also learn how to DM better for the campaign I'm running right now.
Also forgot to put, but I'm an artist. Love to draw.
Are you talking about where to start as a DM or where to start finding other people to game with?
honestly, since I’m starting from scratch as a whole, both?
Searching this server for dm tips will get you a bunch of advice. There are also some bot commands that may be useful.

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
There's a bunch of DM advice on YouTube and in blogs. My personal favorites are Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series, Sly Flourish's published material, the Angry GM, the Alexandrian, and Johnn Four's Roleplaying Tips.
As for finding others, see #find-a-game for instructions on using the server's Looking For channels. I also wrote this guide to cover other options: #third-party-tools-archive message
gotcha thank you thank you, I’ll go ahead and give those all a good perusal
Hi. I apologize if this is a stupid question....I am new to D&D and am getting started in Adventurer's League. The DM said that I can use any race/class from Forgotten Realms. Where can I find what races/classes would be included?
You might get more specific advice in #adventurers-league. But the official D&D races are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
I think the PHB options and most (if not all) of Monsters of the Multiverse are in the Forgotten Realms.
Honestly I think you'd have to find a sourcebook specifically talking about another realm (Eberron, for example) in order to find something not in Forgotten Realms
I was thinkint about playing and or Dming DnD but Im kinda shy irl and I have a hard time with scope and prepardness
also, if anyone got tips for finding local (Lgbtq+ friendly) games pls tell me
idk if anyone would be like "yeah i hate the lgbtq+ people so you cant play d&d with us." I say if there is a local place that would play D&D just give it a try! It wouldnt hurt:)
ty, I dontt think there are any hobbie shops near by, I have no idea how to find games besides just looking on cragilist but at that point might as well harvest my own organs
lmfao TRUEEE. I think it's possible to play with friends online too, there is a few good things to be able to play d&d on
There’s also a way to find games to play online here if you’re open for that
Well Im not out irl
aand I live with my mom. so no online
or else Ill have to not be myself which defeats the whole idea
Ah okay fair
Yaall know where I would find irl games?
Have you had a look at local game stores?
