Class
Your class is the primary definition of what your character can do and gives you a variety of special features, such as a fighter’s mastery of weapons and armor, and a wizard’s spells. This article provides a quick breakdown of each available class and can help guide your choice.
A subclass provides further specialization within each class. Each class also lets you choose a subclass, which provides unique features and further specialization within the class. This choice happens between 1st and 3rd level, depending on the class.
I meant in general, I know cleric gets stuff at level 1 and I think warlock at level 1 or 2
Warlock, sorcerer, and cleric are level 1
Wizard and Druid are level 2
Everything else is level 3
That’s nearly half the classes that aren’t at level 3
yeah I just wanna know how to do this specific subclass lmao
cuz the campaign im gonna be playing in we start at level 3
Once you’re a 3rd-level fighter, you’d choose it for your Martial Archetype.
no
No, Eldritch Knight is from the Player’s Handbook.
cuz I’m making my character sheet on dnd beyond and I only had one option
It isn't free
do I have to pay for it or smth
yeah
aw man
The Basic Rules (the free stuff) include one subclass for each class.
For Fighters, that’s Champion.
You can buy just the subclass by itself, though.
It probably costs a 2 or 3 dollars to get it
Or you can get the PHB on sale for 40% off this weekend.
my friend has a non free account or whatever so I’ll ask him
I remember when my friend had a top tier subscription and all the content and just let us join a campaign and run wild with characters
well character creation
Yeah, if (a) someone in your group already bought the subclass, and (b) someone in your group has a Master Tier subscription and enables Content Sharing for your campaign, then you’d get access to that subclass as well.
yo how can I j
j…oin a game? #find-a-game can point you in the right direction.

Hello there! I just joined, and I was wondering if there are any tips from people who have previously joined could provide me on what this community usually does here??
Okee dokie thank you
hi
i started a game of Dungeons and Dragons at a hospital once
i'm trying to find a game
i only have played a paladin and wizard
i'm a young wizard
what are you asking for
if you’re asking for a game to play in then go to #find-a-game
i'm not asking for anything
i have my dark green hooded cloak
my black sweatpants
my walking stick
my green and white deck of magic cards
i'll look in #find-a-game
just looking to try playing, i've only DM'd and played a paladin and wizard
yeah, you’re asking for a game to play lmao
I just joined and I've only ever played as a character in dnd. If anyone can or wants to can someone teach me how to be a DM?

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Head on over to #dm-discussion for advice.
Thank you
I'm planning on playing an artificer but I'm confused as to some of the infusion rulings.
Like on the replicate magic item can i replicate a spellwrough find familiar, make the familiar, then replicate another spellwrough tattoo using the same infusion??
and have the other infusion slots for lets say, mind sharpener, repeating shot, and enhance armour?
but how many times can i replicate that item?
like can i replicate the spellwrought tattoo use it then replicate another spellwrought tattoo within the same day?
You cannot replicate a spellwrought tattoo because it's not on the list of magic items you can replicate.
The number of infusions is based on your artificer level.
A 2nd level artificer can have 2 infusions and could have two Replicate Magic Item infusions as a result.
Y it says failed spell action
Hi guys
Hi all. Is anyone able to give me a fairly detailed breakdown of the differences between the player handbook and the Young Adventurers Guide? (Ideally a random snapshot page of each would be great so I can get a sense of how ‘wall of text’y they are?
i've never played DnD before, but very much like to
can someone help with that ?
Just getting into D&D and my son is super keen too. Trying to work out what to get him for his birthday.
He’s 7 years old but a PROLIFIC reader, he basically taught himself to read. He’s read all of Harry Potter twice and has nearly finished his third run, so no issues with the actual reading level. Just want to make sure it’s interesting.
And he loves a good reference book like his Pokémon encyclopaedia. Is it worth bothering with Young Adventurers or should I just get him a PHB?

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
The Player's Handbook (PHB) is the detailed rulebook for players to help them create characters and to know the fundamental rules of the game, such as for combat.
The Young Adventurers Guide is a guidebook for younger kids with simpler rules.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/554-play-d-d-with-kids-using-the-young-adventurers
Yeh I’ve read the basic rules online and have a sense of what’s in that; it’s the YAG I’m interested in seeing.
Thanks that’s a helpful link!
I suspect I’m just gonna go with the PHB as I think he can handle it, and then we have 1 in the family (and I can get the DMG for MY birthday then). But want to check first to make sure it’s the right choice.
The Basic Rules has most of what you need to start playing.
The PHB has more playable races and sub-classes.
Yeh reading through that link on YAG, I don’t think he needs those. I think it’s the PHB he wants.
We’ve played First Blush (a pay-what-you-want duet game on dmsguild) together already and he loved it. I think he’s ready for full D&D, not Simple D&D.
There's also the OSR (Old School Revival) that is based on the Basic/Expert ruleset of the 1980s. The rules are much more simpler than 5E. (Basic/Expert were created to be an "introduction" ruleset to the more complex Advanced D&D (AD&D) ruleset).
hello. I am new to D&D. I have read through the rules and getting started guide but I am a bit stuck on creating my character. on the description page in the notes, are those notes for during the campaign or is it something i come up with now. and under staring equipment my barbarian only starts with common clothes, would i add like hide Armor and remove the amount of gold from my starting gold ?
Ask your DM but you should be fine to get the armour. What are your stats as your unarmoured defence should be roughly the same as hide armour
so unarmoured my armor class is 12 and the hide armor class is 12+ dex modifier. so it is almost the same
For starting equipment there are two main options: starting gear, and starting gold. Under starting gold, you get a set amount and can buy what you want. Under starting equipment, your class choice will provide you with a set of appropriate gear, equivalent to the gold value.
If you have assigned your stats sensibly, your unarmored defense (10 + dex + con) is likely to be around 13-15. Generally a barb wants high str and con, and middling dex. Hide armour being 12+dex (and assuming your dex isn't inappropriately high) means it could be on par with unarmored, and thus kind of a waste of gold.
This is partly why the barbarians standard starting gear doesn't include armour: a lot of starting armour is only going to be around as good as their class feature.
ok that makes alot of sense. thank you .
Yo Im a lot newer than I thought it seems, Im trynna make a character but I have a lotta confusions with their abilities, can someone help me out?
hi
Sure, just ask about what it is.
what's a constitution modifier? I'm trynna make a bloodhunter character and constitution modifier thing and DC and hemocraft save DC are confusing me a little, it also says I get an "advantage" on survival checks to track fey, fiends or undead and I don't understand what it means by advantage
Advantage is when you roll two d20s instead of just one, and you pick the higher result of the two (So basiclaly you're more likely to get a good roll)
Modifiers for your abilities (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, etc.) are based on your scores in those abilities, so for example a constitution score of 14 would make your constitution modifier a +2
So, your Constitution ability score is a representation of how tough your character generally is. So a higher score means a higher modifier, which means you get more HP, resist poisons, cold, and similar effects a little easier.
The Blood Hunter class, I will notify you, is a third-party homebrew by Matt Mercer (the guy who does Critical Role, and made the Exandria setting, which Explorer's Guide to Wildemount (an official book!) is set in).
As a blood hunter, your Hemocraft save DC is based off of either your Intelligence or Wisdom. You pick it in the character builder, there'll be a dropdown in Hunter's Bane i believe.
And advantage is what Saragon just said.
I recommend you read through the basic rules more thoroughly. Most things can be answered just by the basic rules, but specific questions to get further clarification are always welcomed. Just that usually, broader questions get redirected with a "read the basic rules" as a 'sign tap' thing.
Can I share my characters pdf to someone or a pic of my character to see if is good
You can post a link to it in #character-discussion
Hello! Im Gordobus (i speak spanish)

Oh really? Very thanks!
What do you mean is good? Like do you wanna know if the character stats are allocated according to the importance based on your class?
Id be happy to help. Yes im new here but not new to d&d.
I don't know anything about DND but I want to play it can you guys help me out
Welcome! There’s some helpful starter links a few messages up.
But if you have any specific questions, ask away!
Hello, I am completely new to DND and would like to start playing. I have made a character but unsure if stats are ok? I would really like to join an online game/group
ooooh, i see. I'm also new. Is it possible to spectate a session?
you could just ask the dm if it’s ok to like join the call they’re playing in. If they’re playing in person, ask them to go in a call with them, stay muted and just watch it unfold
If you multiclass... do you take that class's hitdie on level up?
I think it’s your original characters class’s hitdie
don’t quote me on that tho
Welcome! You can share it over in #character-discussion if you want feedback.
You could try asking around in our game-finding channels, but there’s also plenty of games on YouTube and the like that you can just watch on demand.
Greet. Am a guy who wants to get into DnD/Pathfinder stuffs and since locally the options are limited I wanted to try it out online. My only experience with DnD is playing Baldurs Gate 3 (on 2nd playthrough now) and I absolutely love it.
I'm still in the process of translating one of my OCs into a DnD character, but once I'm done I'd be looking for a group likely with a typical fantasy setting so I can get the feel of roleplaying live and such.
Yeah, you do. Full rules here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#HitPointsandHitDice
Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups whenever you’re ready.
Also when a spell is "at higher levels" is that spell level or character level?
character and spell levels are seperate
So when looking at a spell and at the bottom where it says "At Higher Levels...." it means the spell slot level?
Yo yo yo
I’ve been doing a solo worldbuilding thing and sometimes dm for my friends but I’ve never been a player
How do u find online groups to play with?
aw thanks man could you tell me a little about spells?
Does every character start with spell slots and stuff? or are all their abilities and "moves" called different things?
Like I know the sorcerer uses spells but what does the Monk for example, get in terms of "moves"?
oh ok does Monk get anything else going forward?
Or is it just basic attacks for the rest of the run?
They get ki points to use for abilities depending on subclass
I’ll send you a sheet (it is basically a less fighting based d and d campaign
I am looking to join a campain
What are some apps or websites I could use for dice and stuff (Other than D&D Beyond)
Stuff? There are plenty of online dice rollers but if your after dnd content your limited to dndbeyond or purchasing on roll20
Like, what I mean by stuff is like for stat noting or character logging aside from D&D Beyond
I don't have any dice irl right now so I need like, a website for it
Or an app
Sorry I'm like, extremely new to D&D 😭🙏
Roll20 or some other virtual tabletop. Grab the Beyond20 extension too.
Alright thank you
Oh Ok, could you tell me where I could see the attainable abilities and such for other classes?
Free basic rules are linked in the pins of This channel
thx
What's happening folks? Just found out this discord was a thing. Glad to meet you all.
welcome!
Hello clans and families, I am attempting to learn how to DM for my children. My kids are getting old enough to begin playing. The hurdle is I do not have any supplies or direction beyond what I read online as of now. I have ordered dice for us all in a kit with bags and rolling pad. I downloaded the free items on “d&dbeyond” but have not purchased books or apps beyond DDB. What would you suggest to start with to get the kids going quickly and having fun. We can always restart after a campaign and they understand more. I HAVE NOT PLAYED IN 35 YEARS… Help me get up and running with simplicity if it exists, please. I don’t want to buy things that I don’t need to start, I will buy what ever I need, just don’t want extra “stuff” I won’t be ready for, confusing me. 😁🥰🙏🏽
Hello Riot!
Have you checked the info in this channel’s pins?
How old are they? Monster Hunters: Heroes of Hesiod is for younger kids 6 and up.
How hard is being a DM? How many hours of preparation do I need for a simple level 1 oneshot homebrew. Is it easier or harder than you'd expect?
I think it’s easier in some ways, harder in others, but on the whole, it’s not as difficult as most folks imagine it to be.
Writing your own one-shot is a lot of time, potentially, so I might recommend not doing that and just running a pre-written.
Prep time can range from 4-6 hours per session to just 1 hour - depends on how comfortable you are with improvising and working more with high-level notes rather than detailed planned scene notes.
Which is why yeah, we recommend new DMs start with a prewritten adventure as a lot of that prep work has been done for you.
What equipment do I need? I don't really worry about time, I have no life.
It’s less about equipment and knowing how adventures are structured, and the flexibility that comes with experience. That’s hard to do upfront. Possible, but tough.
Where do you find the prewritten adventures?
DMsGuild has tons, for free and pay-what-you-want.
Also Lost Mines of Phandelvar is free on DnDBeyond
Are these "official" ones?
Phandelvar - thats a pretty good one for new players and DMs and is an official published adventure
Lost Mine is official. There are official adventures on DMsGuild but also ones by individual creators on there.
But there’s lots of great third-party stuff, so don’t feel like it needs to be official to be good.
There’s a list of official adventures here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/adventures
How long is lost mine?
(They’re on sale this weekend, too.)
It goes from level 1-5.
Lost Mine is estimated at around 30 hours of gameplay, but could easily be more or less.
Any "official" one-shots? Like compleable in one day?
There’s also an updated version that just released which expands on Lost Mine, covering levels 1-9 instead.
Do you want to buy a one-shot itself or a book? A few of the published books are just compilations of short adventures.
I don't know tbh. Just something where a level 1 Newbie friendly one shit exists.
*shot
And you’re set on it being an official product?
Kinda, else I wanna make a homebrew. My brain hates "unofficial" content, so I would prefer that.
You can check out Candlekeep Mysteries or Journeys through the Radiant Citadel. They’re official anthologies of one-shot adventures.
Okay, thanks a lot!
There’s also a few here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/dungeon-masters-only/43718-list-of-free-dnd-campaigns
Obviously just check out the ones from wizards.com or D&D Beyond, as those adventures are official (or close enough to as to make no difference).
Can any one explain inspiration to me? I have a half Sunset looking symbol on there
Inspiration is something that the DM awards to players they think deserve it for various reasons, such as good roleplaying. You can only have one inspiration at a time and all inspiration are gone after a long rest.
If you have inspiration, you can expend it when you make an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check. Spending your inspiration gives you advantage on that roll.

Yo, last time I played dnd was for an April fools day prank. If anyone is fine with a newcomer I'm down to play.
Please use #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels
Hello, i am not exactly new to D&D as i grew up with my father playing it pretty much my whole life and i have played it before, though that was several years ago. I'm thinking about creating a druid character but have never played one, well except for in World of Warcraft. I was wondering if anyone might have any tips that may prove useful. I am new here and rather shy, but as such i have not quite been able to find my way around here as of yet.
I was able to find a game best using roll 20’s find a game feature you can sort through days of the week and add accepting newcomer.
What's roll 20?
Thanks
no problem
what does it mean when something says "take 7 (2d6) bludgeoning damage?"
7 is the average damage of 2d6.
It's there if DM's prefer to use average damage for ease/speed and to stop the swing of dice in combat.
i see thank you
np.
hi! im very new to dnd, im trying to help set up a campaign for myself and some friends based off of an annual art event! we've got all our players, but our dm has been unresponsive for the last month, and im looking to find a new one. where would i go to look for a new one in this server?

Hello guys pretty new any tips on dm?
Well this channel is more for helping new to D&D folks figure out the rules and mechanics.
If you're wanting to be a Dungeon Master, I'd recommend checking out #dm-discussion and pick the minds of other DMs.
Hi
Welcome!
It's also there for a DM to be able to estimate average damage output easier
So they can expect on average a bandit's scimitar to do ~4 damage
Hey all, newb question. I am building a gnome character. The PHB says gnomes get +2 to their Int. But if I choose the Rock Gnome subrace do I ALSO get the +1 Con or is that INSTEAD of the +2 INT ?
+1 as well
you get both traits
All gnomes get +2 int
Groovy, TY 🙂
subraces get a different bonus on top
"Some races have subraces. Members of a subrace
have the traits of the parent race in addition to the
traits specified for their subrace"
Hi everyone
hi
I am familar with some parts of DnD but I never got to actually play it
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Aside from that, how is everyone doing?
I'm okay, how about yourself?
I just got off from work so I'm doing good
Not yet but I'll do that now

i came here to find people to play with, is this a right place?

This is probably a dumb question but can you play D&D solo?
hmm
I mean you can certainly try but it definitely won't be the same experience
it would be really hard to figure it out
but I'm sure it's possible
ya I figured it wasn't very likely, but I live on an island with a small population and its hard to find other to play with
ah
well you could try playing online
I'm in an online campaign and it's pretty easy to play over a voice call or something similar
There are homebrew tools out there to make a solo D&D experience but yes, D&D is designed around a party of 4-6 players and 1 Dungeon Master.
Hello all. I'm new to dnd and am excited to start playing. I don't have my handbook yet and I have not yet started my character creation. I would like to wait to get my hand book first to see what character there are to choose from.
Is that how it works. Or can I just make something up on my own?
You generally make your own character, yes
It gives you the process to make your character, it doesn't have presets to pick from
Oh ok thank you.
oh I see
I do have the "worksheet" I suppose I can just follow that.
Can beholders oppurtunity attack? Or enemy spellcasters? Or is it always only melee
Opportunity attacks can only be done with melee attacks.
everything can unarmed strike, but OA's are only with melee weapon attacks.
This may be a little misguided on my part, but is there a good place to DM even as a new player? I'm a firm believer in actively engaging via trial and error with the material, even as I read through it as rapidly as possible. I have the core stuff Adventurer's League requires --I picked that up -- and have been motoring through the books on my daily walks. Maps aren't an issue for me either as I was roleplaying in another context and making maps for that and using owlbear already -- just looking to shift some of my efforts to DND 5e atm.
Find some friends, get a D&D game organized, be the DM. It's as simple* as that.
*simple may not be as simple as it sounds
I had a comment about renting friends, but I have a feeling my dark humor might be over the top.
Yeah... let's not go there! 😉
Usually the biggest issue to any D&D campaign is real life schedules.
What is WotC?
Wizards of the Coast
Trust me, if anyone knows about juggling schedules it's me. Between work, both my parents having cancer atm, and a dedicated gym schedule, I really only roleplay async when I have time.
Oof - sorry to hear about your parents. You might look into creating and running a Play by Post Discord server for your friends to play D&D async.
Also if you want to pick the brains of other DMs, check out #dm-discussion
As UndyingNoob said.
Best tool is transparency. "Hey, we're all new, we may make mistakes. I might need to fix things. Lets be aware."
Yeah that's my typical method to be honest. That + owlbear for movement and, in this case, DNDbeyond for sheets.
owlbear rodeo is nice. Simple VTT only for the board and tokens, and any extras are optional. Did you know owlbear 2 has extensions?
Yeah I'm aware, but I normally just do d20 calc on my phone tbh. It's faster.
I'm also new but you should have a starter book for free... not the handbook I just bought that one but some others
Here's a link to the free basic rules via DnDBeyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
I'm aware. I pulled them all down.

Does anyone know of a good description for orc eye color? I keep trying to find something but I only see reference to skin color the more I dig.
I know it's very up in the air, just wish there was more clarity.
According to the wiki, which cites the 3e Monster Manual, they have reddish eyes. https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Orc
But the DM can change any lore/descriptions as they like.
Are the subraces like Gray Orcs cannon as well? https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Gray_orc
I haven't seen an update in 5e, so I assume without it being overridden it still stands.
No that is not a thing in 5th edition D&D
Good idea. Let me pop in there!
What's a decent module to run as a beginner DM? I keep reading Curse of Strahd is the best but can be tough. I've only played 1/2 through Cragmaw Hideout before our DM just quit. I was thinking of sunless citadel or something but a bit nervous since I've never DMed and don't know a lot of rules.
I am going to try and do in person at my local game store... hopefully
Are you looking for a campaign or a one-shot?
Also you may want to ask in #dm-discussion
I was thinking a campaign that's not super long yet. I dont wanna get in over my head lol
(also no spoilers - if you must discuss adventure spoilers, use #1029833015423143957)
I would say any of the starter set adventures—Lost Mine of Phandelver, which is free on D&D Beyond, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, or the Stranger Things one—would fit the bill. Curse of Strahd is a sizable sandbox, so I would not recommend that to a first-time DM.
LMOP sounded great but I preordered the new book coming out in a few days so I was going to run it with that since there are some changes. I watched some Youtubes and it really got me interested. I read LMOP and sunless citadel were the best to start. Hopefully one day I'll get to run COS
whats westmarch
Westmarch is a style of play that commonly is run on a separate Discord server (or similar service). These types of games are run in the same universe and the events of one group of adventurers can impact those of another. Groups and DMs may change regularly. They're ideal for pick-up games or if you want to be part of a bigger, more interwoven narrative. Think of them a little bit like an "MMO" for tabletop games.
i see..so say i wish to join one from #looking-for-community ..do i reply to the thread or join via link directly
That probably varies. I'd suggest posting in the attached thread to see what the poster prefers.
I don’t understand wizard spells known it says you start off with six first level spells but it also says you have spells equal to your int mod + your level
You choose 6 spells to know.
You prepare a number of spells equal to your Wizard level + you int modifier that you can cast each day
The number you can prepare will be less than the number you have known in your spell book at any time
So level 1 you know 6 spells. With a +3 int mod you can prepare 4 spells for the day. At level 2 you add two more spells; thus you know 8 spells. You can prepare 5 spells for the day (still using the +3 int modifier)
me and my sis are new we wanna try a campain together
is there anyone we can join?
I’m so confused
About?
Known vs prepared
If I know six spells why can I only cast 4 of them
Because that is how wizard’s spellcasting feature works
you have 6 in your book
every long rest you choose 4 to prepare, allowing you to cast them
Or think of it like a chef
He may know how to make many dishes
But he only puts a certain number on the menu at any given time
in any case there isnt realy a better answer than:
Those are the rules
You start off knowing six spells, and with a +3 int mod at level 1 you can prepare 4 for the day, you can know 2 more spells every time you level up then why isn’t there a spells known thing that says
Level 1: 6
Level 2: 8
Level 3: 10 etc
There is; it’s Wizard level + Int modifier
The spellcasting section is trying very hard to tell you that if you play wizard, you need to pump up your INT (and to a lesser extent, stay wizard)
Wizard is the strongest class, you pay a price for every level you take in another one
I thought thats how much I can have prepared for the day so with a +3 mod level 1 is 4, level 2 is 5 etc
Ah, for known. Yes, unfortunately it is poorly written to make it clear. Part of it is that the number of spells you know change based on if you find and add spells to your spell book
Spells you know (copied into yoir book):
Start with 6
Add 2 per level
Also any u learn along the way from scrolls and such
No upper limit other than the gold and time to copy
Spells prepared:
INT + wizard level
So the number of spells I know is 6, 8, 10, etc going up by two per level then with a +3 mod at level 1 I can prepare 4 of the 6, level 2 I can prepare 5 of 8, level 3 I can prepare 6 of 10?
They dont just say how many you know because u can learn spells in game
Also this conversation is example #1 of why wizard is not recommended for new players
Without adding spells is this right?
Yes

what does an arcane focus do and how does one use it
Arcane spellcasters like sorcerers and wizards use arcane focus in lieu of using a spell component case.
The focus only replaces Material components that have no gold value.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the dnd thing and I've been checking out the links provided here for explanation and I have to say, thank you it is really helpful to me. 🙂

Hi ! ^^
Hey
Sup
welcome folks! Any specific questions we can help answer?
guys can anyone explayn to me how d&d work?
becouse i want to pllay it with my friend
There’s some handy links a few messages up to get you started. ☝️
But did you have any specific questions?
So, I've never once played D&D, but I really want to. I know a few basic things, like the die rolling and the DM and stuff like that, but is there anything really important I should know
Sure
Never walk into a room of kings guards after your party killed the king and say "Your king is dead" while putting your hands up thinking that it will put them at ease
- Try not to argue with your DM
- Failure is an option, and sometimes it's more fun!
- Aim to be a team player one way or another
I think with point one is, you should communicate with each other respectfully. If you meet a DM who is doing things that are hurting the game or has got rules wrong, you need to feel like you can speak out but at the same time it shouldn't be every second. Other than that, I think those are some good general rules
Alright, I'll make sure to keep those in mind. Thank you!
Iv just ordered the hard back book of the guide coz I prefer to look at a book so I’m gunna read up then I really wanna start one I’m gunna create my character
Hey, im kinda a beginner and im looking to play through discord, any advice?
First step is to read the free rules pinned in this channel. Once you're feeling comfortable, you can look for an online game in #looking-for-players, you can also post for yourself in #750812887697588356. There's also #looking-for-community for larger communities. If you want to look further, you can check out the D&D Beyond or Roll20 forums for online games. Most online games use discord and a vistual table top like Roll20 or Foundry.
Thank you, i really wanna get back into playing
Happy to help. Have fun!
Hello, Im new and i would like to know what would be the beast game to start, becouse i have looked in the #looking-for-players and there are too many descriptions, ty in advance.

Heyo I wanted to ask a question figured this would be the best place to ask it, would it be better to play an official race for my first game?
The playable races allowed are determined by the DM.
Some DMs, such as myself, don't allow homebrew races.
Hi I’ve just started my first campaign as a DM and it’s a homebrew just wondering if anyone can suggest some ideas it would be highly appreciated
Head on over to #dm-discussion for advice.
How does Asynchronous Play-By-Post works, is that something tedious ?
Nah - just like sending mail/email to someone, they respond, etc.
DM collects it all and sends out periodic recaps and then explains the next situation.
It's just a different way to play.
Too slow for me, I prefer theatre of mind / video or live session but thank you for letting me know
Where can I find cool dice, what books should I get if I want to collect some books, is pledging the Ryoko’s worth it if I’m probably gonna get it when it’s released, and are there any other dnd collectables that might be interesting?
Also any other homebrew books I should check out that you guys recommend?
For third-party materials, I suggest checking out #third-party (3rd party books) and #third-party-tools-archive (3rd-party tools to help folks play D&D)
Hey there! My wife and I are learning DnD, unfortunately we have no group around. We choose me for the GM, yay... I have a question though:
When my wife's character casts a spell (as a sorcerer) is there a check to see if she cast it successfully?
We are used to other systems, and there you do, but on YT I saw it might now
If you haven't played yet I would recommend you just stick with the free Basic Rules until you decide if it's worth spending money on the game.
There is no check to see if the spell is successful. The spellcaster just casts the spell on their turn.
Ive already been playing for close to 2 years. Ive just never spent money on it
The PHB is the first book you should get then. Xanather's and Tasha's are the next two books I would recommend.
Thank you! I couldn't find it in the rules, so I had her throw a d20 out of familiarity, but I now know,, I was dumb.. thanks!!
Thanks

I figured it out
can u perform the somatic components of a spell with a 2 handed weapon?
Yes
A two-handed weapon only needs two hands when you use it to attack.
When you’re not attacking, nothing prevents you from holding it in a single hand, which would free the other one for somatics or whatever else.
Can somone like take a look at this and pass jugment on my new character?https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/108861355
hi, im a new player if i can ever call myself player yet. i havent played dnd and know it mostly from some friends and memes, and i really wanna try if its my thing, because it sounds fun. is it a good sserver to find dm willing to teeach/host new players, or i sthere base minimum to join?

You want 16 int to start with
And probably at least 12 Dex
You also need to choose your spells
I also wouldn’t recommend starting as a wizard
Hello, I've a question! I'm pretty new to DND and this is one of my first characters.
I wanted to ask, why do I get 2nd level spell slots? This is a level 4 paladin, but I just put one level into Sorcerer a minute ago and now she has access to level 2 spell slots. I saw that Paladins don't get access to 2nd level spells til level 5, and sorcerers don't get theirs til level 3. But my character's level as a whole is 5. Why is that?
(Sheet for reference)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/88264340
Read the muticlassing rules for spellcasting
You add together all your sorcerer levels, and half your Paladin levels, to calculate what spell slots you get
Overall you are technically a 3rd level caster
So you get 2nd level spell slots
However you learn spells on a class by class basis
So you have no 2nd level spells
All good
Btw, may I ask why half paladin and full sorcerer? Is the class dip always computed in full, and the base class always in halves?
Paladins are half casters
Sorcerers are full casters
Bards, sorcerers, wizards, warlocks, clerics, and Druids are all full casters
Rangers, paladins, and artificers are half casters
And the eldritch knight and arcane trickster subclasses (fighter and rogue respectively) are all third casters
So in the case that I had this, I'd calculate half of the paladin levels, and a third of my fighter levels to see how many spell slots I get?
Yeah if you were multiclassing paladin and eldritch knight fighter you would do 1/2 Paladin levels and 1/3rd fighter levels
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options the spellcasting section under multiclassing here explains how it works in full
And has the table for spell slots
Mm, alright then!! But I still don't get access to 2nd level spells despite having 2nd level spell slots yes? Best I can do with them at present is to upcast?
Yep
You can also use them for your Paladin smites
Learning spells is based off of each individual class
All good!
Oh also, a supplementary question — what's some fun multiclass options that a newbie like me can try? :>
I wouldn't recommend multiclass yet for a new player to D&D. Learn one class before trying to take on two.
Oh, alright!
might be a homebrew mix of the spellcasters for younger players. When I first started playing as a kid, that's what we used
From an in game perspective: how do sorcerers learn their individual spells? Are they simply granted to them by means of their origin, did they stumble upon the right set of variables (V,S,M) by accident... Or better, where I can find more about this in game stuff?
Oh, sorry! Will ask there, thanks!
Want me to delete my question here? On other servers people have fits if you remove comments
I'm sure it's all good
Ok
nah, its all good, this was a good place to ask first if you werent sure where else
Hi can someone help me, I’m trying to find a campaign to join and I was reading the find a game thing but I’m still confused
What had you confused?
I knocked out an entire crowd of a mix of halflings and gnomes(30 of em) with two turns because my bard friend was able to intimidate them all to freeze in place and I rolled max damage on two unarmed strikes(one missed both turns)
Nice
and also I learned that next level I can start doing 1d8 per unarmed strike by taking a level in fighter and choosing unarmed for my fighting style
What exactly is homebrew?
Content designed by non-official sources like you, me or 3rd-party publishers
I think I got it, lol
There goes my totally original edgy character with a very very dark sad backstory and how they brood all the time
is there a benefit to using infernal calling over summon greater demon?
Demons and Devils are opposite sides of the same coin. Infernal Calling is for devils while Summon Greater Demon is as the name implies.
ok ty
Hey!
Is there a some sort of character creator you guys could recommend? I just to make sure that I am not forgetting something or doing something wrong
dnd beyond
you don't really need a character creator
imo DnD beyond sucks in that aspect. I hated using it.
For a new player, DnD beyond is good
if you already have a table/dm then just doing character creation together is probably best, cause they might ban/allow specific stuff for their game
Process wise that is true but i believe the poster is asking about tools
Character creator? All you need is a pdf
I just wanted one to make things easier! as some sort of checklist or guideline or whatever because I wouldn't notice if I made something wrong ^^`
Dnd beyond will load all your features and calculate all your stats, provided you have the content in the app
It is both a digital library for the books and a character builder (and a dice roller)
Hi, i am new to DnD can anyone please explain to me how to play it?
Have you had a look at the basic rules?
Yes. I understood some rules, but not all
which ones do you have questions about?
I know about the character class and stats. But will i have to remember all their moves etc?
Hi! I new nice to meet you all
Nice to meet you too
Thank you. I also strugle with the rules.
That's what your character sheet will be for, it'll list everything that your character can do that is unique to that character (ie not a general rule); class features, abilities, spells etc
You can then use that information to look those features up in the books
There are some general features and actions that are available to all creatures and characters, such as moving, attacking, grappling, dashing etc. Those won't be listed but because they're common features, everyone at the table will be using them and thus become familiar with them
Hi everyone, noob here. Nice to meet you all.
Got it
Where can i find a game? And how
Because i think i have learned the basics so far. I will understand the game better if i can play a game

I just found out the best way to know at what time a certain session is going to start that is posted in #looking-for-players of which I do not know the time zone conversion. I told ChatGPT following and then it just worked ^^ :
"I would like you from now on to convert the time of a certain timezone to what that time would be in (here your time zone) in a short answer. Here the next one: 6pm CDT (just an example)"
I dont know if I was the only one with this issue but wanted to share
A google search will also do that for you
I have seen others using discord timestamps, which I really love, but that is quite rare
There's a tool called Hammertime (https://hammertime.cyou/) that will generate Discord timestamps
But anyhooo... should let this channel get back to D&D newcomers - thanks for sharing your tip!
Thanks a lot. This is way better than other sites I have seen that let you create discord timestamps
So I already have some characters made. Do I have to put them in server to "register" them? Also, how do I join a group? I'm relatively new to DND but I have played a session or two.
That's not how D&D works, no
Not sure what you mean by putting them in a server to register them. Usually people make their character for a DM's specific game.
You would typically not make a character before joining a campaign
Typically you join a campaign and then, having learned about the adventure and the world it takes place in, make a character that fits that world
Though, it's perfectly fine to make a few characters as practice and then see if they need tweaks once you find a game.
Or to think of a general character concept to flesh out for a specific game, for example
That's what I do. I make characters for fun, and tweak them. And what I meant for register is because I didn't know if DND is played on this server or if it's through VC.
Usually a campaign will have its own discord or other platform for organising games. But the #find-a-game section of this discord can help you find your campaign.
Alright. Thanks for the help! Sorry if I'm bothering anyone, I'm relatively new to this. And I haven't used discord in like two years so
Not at all! The newcomers channel is exactly for these kinds of questions, and if they annoy people, then they have other channels to go to.
You can ask what dice are, and this channel would be the right place to ask it 😄

So I chose half ork but I changed all of its strength to Dex in the origin manager to fit my homebrew race best. Is this aloud?
It depends if the DM is using the optional rule from Tasha's that allows this. Not all DMs do, though it is a popular change.
To say nothing of using a homebrew race in the first place.
K I’ll ask them then
Hey, my friends and I want to try out dungeons and dragons for the first time, maybe someone can be our dm and guide us? Theres 4 of us

Does Aura of Hate works on fiend monsters_
Yes.
Starting at 7th level, the paladin, as well any fiends and undead within 10 feet of the paladin
and I am going to avernus gg
I’m almost done creating my character but just a question, do you think anyone would be put off because I named my character bee bee and not a serious name 😭
That depends entirely on the group you join.
There's definitely groups that aren't worried about taking things seriously.
my first character that i still use is a undead goliath with a dual personality named franc and stein
youre fine
depends on the group, i've played alongside a kobold named "La Creatura" before and the entire group loved him
One of my players is called Nygel Jimjammer. BB is a comparatively sensible name.
Hey friends, im currently making my first dnd character for a campaign i signed up for. Im currently trying to pick one of the races from the PHB but im having a pretty difficult time imagining what would be diffirent in the lives of diffirent races. I feel so far i can only really connect with human, and maybe halfling. I wouldnt have a clue what dragonborn, gnomes or tieflings do in their day to day lives and how that affects the way i should roleplay the character, basically i dont have a clue how to roleplay the other races and i was wondering where i could maybe find more information about this
Do you know the setting you're playing in?
im not entirely sure, but last time it was lost mines so im assuming forgotten realms adjacent
or inspired
There's the Forgotten Realms wiki, and I know there are some good YouTubers who cover the lore (I forget which one is known to fabricate it, though). Plus, you can always ask your DM!
do diffirent settings determine how the races live and such?
I would suspect so, but ultimately, it's up to the DM regardless of setting. No one is obligated to use official lore exactly as it's written.
Remember this is a game, not a job or a test. No one is going to grade your role play based on “accuracy of depicting a gnome”
Pick what seems fun
Talk to your dm about the setting
Make your character
Go roll some dice
The DND creators made a collection of rules to establish game mechanics. Those are what you need to learn
The role playing aspect is entirely up to you and your table
i think human seems the most fun for me, but ill still be doing a little research in how diffirent races spice up rp
dm me pls i need to know if im missing anything on my sheet

I come from BG3 world but want to start playing DnD. Can someone explain saving (skill) throws for me?
Check out the bot post just above for the basic rules
It will explain that and more
BG3 is not DnD, it is best to expect changes from what you knew
Saving throws and Skill Checks are 2 different things. You do both by rolling a d20, and then adding your proficiency bonus if you are proficient in that skill or saving throw. Your Proficiencies are determined by your class, race, and background
Oh I absolutely do. That's why I'm trying to figure out the differences before I try to play. Don't want to seem stupid coming into it for the first time.
Yeah I know they are different. But some saving throws have a specific skill attached. I dont understand that part.
I think you are using the wrong term here. The word you are looking for is "Ability." A saving throw will have an ability score associated with it, such as a Strength saving throw or a Dexterity saving throw
In general, the DM will ask you to make a saving throw when a spell, ability, or other effect is potentially affecting you
It will be one of the six abilities (STR, WIS, etc)
Roll a d20
Add your modifier from the appropriate stat
If you are proficient in that type of saving throw, add your proficiency bonus
Yes sorry wrong vocabulary. Still trying to change my vocabulary a bit. Lol.
You always add the ability modifier for that listed ability, whether you are proficient or not. But you only add your proficiency bonus if you are proficient in that ability's saving throw
How do you know which time of saving throw will be asked? Is it usually explained by the spell?
Narratively, an ability check is an attempt to accomplish a task, and a saving throw is an attempt to avoid some horrible fate.
The rules will say when to make a saving throw and what kind.
Your DM will instruct you
Yes. Whatever affect is causing the saving throw will tell you what type of saving throw to make. If you cast a spell, it will say it in the spell's description. If you step on a trap, the DM will tell you what to do before they tell you what the effect is. They might say "Please roll a dexterity saving throw" if some rocks are about to fall on you, or "Please roll a constitution saving throw" if a room is filled with toxic gas.
All of that makes sense. Thank you. Noticing that under some characters and wanted to ask. Thank you. I have a lot to learn.
We're always happy to help
Last question. Maybe this will be the right place for THIS question.
Is there a good place to play DnD with a computer to practice knowing the rules and practicing RPing for a newbie? I've tried a Discord Server, but it got repetitive and didn't do much helping me. I am a learner by experience.
Check out #find-a-game
"D&D with a computer" is called Baldur's Gate 3. There isn't really anything in between that and the real thing
You can always find beginner friendly games with real people though
The only way to get experience playing the game is playing the game with other people.
That is what I feared. I kind of rekindled my interest with some basic stuff in ChatGPT so that's why I ask.
D&D is a group collaborative game. A D&D video game mimics the rules but not the experience of having players doing things unexpected (and making the DMs go o.O).
Well it also helps me with my time restraints. I have 2 toddlers so I have limited time to just hope on. I'd have to weekly plan games once I'm ready to start irl.
if you also want to talk about BG3 then there is #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers for that
Scheduling is the biggest hurdle to playing D&D (other than finding a table to play at).
Play-by-post is a good option for those with limited availability.
Those are slower games that are basically always running. You just check in once or twice a day and add your two cents.
There is a Discord that uses ChatGPT to run DM and does it pretty decent. But it gets stuck in a loop sometimes and that's what's getting me. Just don't want to waste time with not knowing how things go before trying with real people.
ChatGPT isn't intelligent and doesn't remember anything. It's a very poor substitute for a real DM.
If you find a game that's welcoming to new players, you aren't wasting anyone's time. Some people like learning the game with other beginners, and some people like teaching new players how to play. That's what its for
D&D video games like Baldur's Gate 3 will better mimic the experience of D&D than ChatGPT can.
There are beginner friendly tables out there. (I'm not one of them because I have very limited free time).
I have a local DnD shop that I want to eventually go to, but I might do one here first. Are most ran through text based or through voice channel?
That depends on who you are playing with. There is a good mix of both. There aren't any games actually run on this server. Our looking-for-games channels are just ways for people to get in contact with each other. They have to set up their own servers or other ways to play together, and establish their own rules
playing with starter set tends to be good way to get some taste what DnD is like
Explain what is a starter set?
It includes a pre-written adventure designed with new players (and new DM's) in mind.
Is there a certain site to use cause I'm new to this
Baldurs gate 3 is a video game. Similar with character build, rolling strategy, and stats.
Baldur's Gate 3 is like a racing video game is to driving a real sports car. Similar but not the same.
Absolutely I'm excited to play with real people because it seems super fun. Just want to feel adept before I make an attempt.

Personally, I learned by watching. YouTube videos of live-play games like Critical Role or Dimension 20 are a good way to learn the basic pace of play and what a normal game would look like
Just finished episode one of "The Mighty Nein" yesterday and I'm hooked. Lol.
That was my first show too. You’re in for a wild ride 😉
Mad I didn't find their ACTUAL first one, but they are a fun crew. Also watched a bit of the Terry Crews episode. I love that they bring in celebs sometimes. Lol.
Campaign 2 (mighty nein) is a better starting place than campaign 1 anyways, imo
The streaming of Campaign 1 started about half way through their campaign (they played from home until they decided to record it).
Been playing Baldur's Gate and watching Critical role as well as some other smaller one shots, really really interested in starting actually playing the game.
A little intimidated by some of the terms in the "looking-for-players" chat that I am unfamiliar with (assuming they are online resources for playing) would love any and all assistance from someone a little more keyed into the server :)?
Which terms were you curious about?
like whatever Roll20 is, I have no idea, so its hard to pitch in and say I am interested... also how forgiving would yall say people offering hosting campaigns are to new players
Roll20 is a website that offers digital maps, books, and character sheet.
Both for D&D and a few other games.
You can learn more on their website:
https://roll20.net/
In general, a lot of games are newcomer-friendly, even when they’re not explicitly advertised as such.
So if you see a game you’re interested in, can’t hurt to ask.
oh okay cool, seems like a great resource, I wonder why some people state they dont use it, but never mind that. Thank you for the tip, thats super helpful 🙂
Which tools a group uses is ultimately up to the group.
A lot of it comes down to just personal preference.
Folks use different tools for their games for a variety of reasons - cost, technical functionality, technichal needs of the group, what just clicks, etc.
Roll20 is nice because it’s free, but it’s user interface isn’t great, and it’s not super user friendly
I ran most of my first campaign in Roll20, because it was free, and I could easily buy a module in their marketplace to get all the setup for the campaign I was running (lost Mine of Phandelver, the original 5e beginner campaign).
it got us started, but many features annoyed both me and the players, and also I found I had to subscribe for vision to work properly. You can play it on free mode, but that was something I wanted to invest in.
I then found out about Foundry, bought it (one-time purchase), and because there was a bit of a gap in play, I had time to set up and run the last dungeon of the campaign there. It was so much easier for me, and so much more engaging for my players.
my advice to new DMs trying out VTT play - start with Roll20! If your patience and your campaign can't survive Roll20, you aren't going to waste any money giving it a go. But once you have a group rolling, check out the alternatives, they will almost certainly be better in the long run 🙂
Hello!!!!!

Is reading the player guide really the best way to learn? It's a hard read. Lol.
You’ll probably internalize it more once you’re actually playing.
I’d focus more on learning where the various rules are rather than trying to commit them to memory.
Then you can always look them up as needed.
A lot of people find videos easier than reading it, too. Handbooker Helper on YouTube is a popular choice for that.
Videos are a good call. I've seen some basic ones, but then got immediate taken by Critical Roll. Lol.
But at a bare minimum, I’d recommend learning these common terms, what to do on your turn, and how your character’s own abilities work.
Handbooker Helper is actually made by Critical Role, to help new players get started.
Having BG3 as a a guide is a decent start but it does some things automatically for you (attack math, advantages, pretty much all Magix stuff). So connecting what I know with what I need to know would be nice. Cuz I got a lot of the basics down but not all of them.
There’s a video here that might help, then.

This may come across as a bit rude, but this video didn't seem like it would be super helpful for newcomers. It was mainly just an ad for D&D Beyond, more than anything else. It didn't really seem like it taught the viewer much of anything
I suppose that teaching them that D&D Beyond exists and you can use it is good advice, at least. But I was sort of thinking this would be more like a video about the differences between the systems or something
Is it just an ad?
It is a video for those people who have played Baldurs Gate 3, and are interested in D&D now.
hello people. i have a question, a while ago i made a character with a character sheet on a website. this website had the basic character sheet for D&d but you could save it online and it automatically tracked shit and could fill in weapons etc. anyone know the website?

No worries! Constructive criticism is always welcome. It’s just that this is the only video I’ve got on the subject. 😅
I did suggest to the content team that there could be value in an article helping to explain the differences between BG3 and D&D itself, though. This can always be updated later if better resources come along.
A more detailed article on the topic would be lovely, yeah. Though, I think a big part of the issue with making any sort of resource for the differences would be the "negative" nature of it. Almost every change BG3 made to the game was removing some sort of restriction or making something easier to use or understand, so giving someone a list of all of the changes would be akin to giving them a list of things they can't do anymore. It would be tough to present that in a positive and welcoming tone for a newcomer
I can only imagine the game is seeing a huge influx of new players from BG3 alone.
yep
It certainly is, yeah
Still seems like it would be beneficial and as long as the video or article lays out "hey these things were added to make the rules game friendly/more entertaining." Then people would maybe take to it better.
I get people will be mad you took away their precious "push" bonus action.

Hey guys! I’m new to DND, but I’ve certainly heard a lot about it! I’m currently reading through the Player’s Handbook to get familiar with the rules, and once I’m done with that, I’d be more than happy to join a game!
When you're ready to find a group or game to join, take a look at #find-a-game - it has information and instructions on how to use our Looking For Game (LFG) channels.
And welcome!
Is atk bonus the extra damage or a number thats added to the attack roll
Where are you seeing this?
attack bonus is added to the attack roll
It says name / atk bonus / damage/type
do not add your attack bonus to your damage roll
So for a dagger I can use my dex mod +3 cuz it has finesse, plus my proficiency bonus +2 so I add a 5 to all attack rolls with the dagger? I don’t add the +5 to the damage?
yep!
damage roll is determined by the weapon itself, plus the relevant ability score
but no proficiency bonus
Even if I’m proficient in the weapon? So the dagger would just be +3?
that is correct
so to put it simply, the attack roll is your ability modifier (whichever one applies) + your proficiency bonus (again, only if it applies)
the damage roll is just determined by whatever the weapon damage is listed as, plus your relevant abillity score
no prof bonus
Correct, and I must say good job. It's often confusing for newcomers but you've already got the hang of it.
Hii

what are the differences between sorcerers warlocks and wizards
Ok let's go
First Wizards, they have the biggest amount of spells they can choose from, but need to keep those written down in their spellbook
At a very high level, wizards study magic, warlocks barter for magic, and sorcerers simply are magic.
Sorcerers can choose any spell in their spell list, but can only have a few of them available at a time, way less than a wizard
Sorcerers can manipulate the spells they cast in ways no one else can, too.
Ultimately, all three are spellcasters, but they're each good at different things
Warlocks are more límited in the amount of spells they can cast, but they can recover their spell slots faster by short resting (other casters need a full rest to recover spell slots)
Warlocks are potentially the most versatile of the bunch, too, since they get more choices within the class.
(Or wizards, since they get the broadest choice of spells.)
Definitely Wizards are the most versatile
Wizard is probably the most complicated of the bunch. They're all fun, though!
Warlock invocations and varied subclasses allow the class to dip in to different roles fairly easily. I think that’s the “versatility” that’s being referenced.
Yes, they are versatile, but not the most versatile
I didn't say they weren't! I just said Wizards win on that front :b
@hardy canopy I am in the same boat never played.
There's a looking for game section #find-a-game

Thanks everyone!
Hey, so is there a specific format I should create my character by? Or do I just enable and disable any option I want and look for a game that suits my settings?
Are you asking about the character settings in D&D Beyond?
Your DM would be the best person to ask which settings to use.
If you don't have a DM yet, I'd just leave those all at their defaults for now.
AH YES! Forgot to add that. Sorry
Okay! Tysm
Well, generally speaking the process is find a game then create a character, so you should just enable or disable whatever the DM says to do. But, if you want to create a character ahead of time, for fun or for personal preference, you should probably just set the settings to the most common ones people use, which is the defaults
Other than playing around and learning how to make a character, it can be easier in some ways to wait to have a game to make the character so you can fit them into that world.
I'd totally recommend having a few loose character ideas in mind, though.
Ty for the help everyone!!
Oh, and on a related note: when you get to ability scores, stick to Standard Array or Point Buy.
If a DM wants you to roll, they typically want to see it happen themself.
Hello everybody I am new to the group and just looking for info on playing dnd. I’m not sure I’m comfortable enough to play with anyone yet but would love to maybe idk watch a game or something. Any info would be great

my character design philosophy that i sometimes advise is making character "shells." design the broadest of broadest strokes that give you a basic idea of the character, waiting to be fleshed out once you join a campaign and can chat with the DM about what works with the world.
As for watching a game, the easiest solution would be to check out YouTube or Twitch, where games are already set up for spectators.
There's a few options in #dnd-advertisements if you're curious.
two of the most popular DnD streams to watch are Critical Role and Dimension 20. they're good entertainment, but i do warn that they're not an accurate representation of the average home game, since they have things like a budget, a production team, decades of acting and play experiences under their belts, etc. things that many home games do not have.
i recommend the watch, but don't be discouraged if you can't get your games to work like their games work
Twitch has a Dungeons & Dragons tag, so just hitting that will get you games that reflect more typical home play.
@foggy saffron thank you and when the time comes where I am ready to maybe play in a game how can I find a group to play with?
I will check those out today. Thank you 🙏

How often does Dnd run sales of 40%? I'd really like to pick up xanathar's guide and tasha's cauldron once they go on sale.
There really isn't set time periods for sales but usually US holidays have a high chance of having something
I don't think I've ever seen them go on sale for 40% off though. That's a tad much.
There was just a sale of 40% on a few items, which was incentive enough for me to buy the DM's guide even though I'm not going to DM. Some nice info in there which I can use as a player when discussing games with a DM.

lots of sorcerer questions:
1)which cantrips and 1st lvl spells are the best?
2)should i keep a ratio of utility and damage spells?
3)are message or mage hand good spells?
More #character-discussion and #optimization questions.
All of the classes with options like this have a Quick Build option, and that's a good starting point within scope for this channel:
You can make a sorcerer quickly by following these suggestions. First, Charisma should be your highest ability score, followed by Constitution. Second, choose the hermit background. Third, choose the light, prestidigitation, ray of frost, and shocking grasp cantrips, along with the 1st-level spells shield and magic missile.
You can see there, there's two elemental damage cantrips, two utility cantrips, one damage levelled spell, and one utility levelled spell. That's reasonably good advice.
Note that the damage spells are all a little different. Shocking Grasp is melee, Ray of Frost is ranged, and magic missile is special in having no attack roll. They also all have different damage types. For Sorcerers, it's easy to fall into the trap of wasting a spell because it does the same thing as another, only worse, so you only ever use it if the target has resistance to the damage type of your better spell.

oh another question: is sorcerer a difficult class to play for a newbie?
Spellcasters are definitely more complex, but anything is doable. If you have someone to help you learn, so much the better.

Out of all the spellcasters, Sorcerer is one of the most straightforward!
All spellcasters pose a challenge to new players because you are not only learning the basics but also tracking what all your spells do
After a couple levels you gain access to Metamagic which lets you modify spells in various ways, which is their big gimmick
The key is being prepared and organized
Repeat after me: "I am a new player. I would like to play a fighter character."
i have a new guy thats never played before and went straight into magick
oh, shush. there's some complicated parts of spellcasting, yeah, but it's not so bad that new players should be restricted from it
It was a 3rd edition thing. 😆
well, this ain't 3rd edition, it's a teeny bit more accessible than that
Excuse my humor. 😎
sure.
but yeah, don't feel discouraged from trying to play a spellcaster as a new player. there's a few more things to remember, but if you read the rules carefully and are patient with yourself, you'll pick it up before you know it!
Not all new players are comfortable tracking that much info
and no one is stopping anyone from playing a spellcaster
But if someone asks, i dont know how anyone cant honestly answer that a martial is easier
Question that I should know but can someone help explain the 'Hit: 4' part of this attack from a Boar
Tusk. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d6 + 1) slashing damage.
average damage if you dont want to roll
ahhh, thank you
technically is 4,5 but thats nonsensical to say
Got it. Thank you.
averages are always rounded down in dnd unless specified otherwise, yeah
3d6 is an average of 10.5, but every damage roll with 3d6 will be written as an average of 10
hello everyone!!!!!!

It’s not. Players handbook (page 7) says to round down. If you averaged a d6 and rounded down, then added one, that’s four.
As a newcomer, what are these visual game boards I see used in online D&D campaigns? Are these paid for and downloaded?
As a brand new player, are the LFP groups on this discord a good place to find others who would allow a newbie? I only ask because the Beyond Forums hardly have any replies to people hosting a game. Thanks.
Some maps are paid for, some are free. The group might be using a platform like Roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo, which are known as virtual tabletops, to display said maps to the group.
It depends! Some are free with a more customizable paid version, like Roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo. Some are paid with all the bells and whistles baked in, like Foundry.
Virtual Table Tops are the term we use for those. Depending on which one you use, they may or may not be free. Some are, and some are not. Roll20 is the name of the most popular free one
As for the channels here, you can always ask if a game is newcomer-friendly or not. Not all folks specify, but that doesn't mean it's explicitly anti-newcomer.
Thanks for the replies everyone.
hey, anyone have advice for someone looking to be a first time dm?
And search the server for dm tips. It's scattered all over.
Anyone know any beginner friendly campaigns starting soon? Me and my girlfriend are looking for one
Check #find-a-game
Fair warning: while some people might get lucky, most campaign searches might take days or even weeks. Even if you're able to find one, it's pretty rare to encounter a game that's looking for new players and is planned to start within 24 hours.
That's not to say it's impossible, but it's important to temper your expectations!
Apparantly they will tbe selling painted versions and unpainted bversions of the monsters
In the vtt
i cant choose between cleric or paladin for my first character thats going to be in a campaign, so i got to have some backstory and motive instead of a pregen
both the classes look appealing 💀
They're both fun! Cleric is more focused on casting spells, while paladin is more focused on swinging weapons.
Have you thought about what oath you’ll take as a Paladin or what domain you’ll serve as a Cleric?
yep and both look appealing
Are there any ways a wizard can acquire cure wounds besides multiclassing or Magic Initiate feat?
I don't think so?
No
hello there
Welcome!
#find-a-game can point you toward the available games.
Strxhaven feats if your DM allows them
thanks bud
I'm thinking about gathering some folks locally to get a game with friends and family. I DM'ed back in the 80s, and BG3 got me wanting to try 5e. I have a group of gamers for board games, but we haven't done RPGs, so I want to get them a great experience. I was thinking about doing the standard 'Lost Mine of Phandelver', but understand that is still several sessions to get thru it all. And I wanted to explore one shot adventures that were of simliar high level quality that would hook in gamers that just haven't done RPGs. What suggestions would you wise discordian people suggest?'
That advantage is it'd introduce them to the game, so that if they like it we could do the Lost Mine of Phandelver and they'd be better informed to pick a character they'd enjoy
DMsguild has a few free oneshots on there
Any recommendations on the best one(s)?
Anyone try this one and able to recommend it: https://www.dmsguild.com/m/product/186488
Multiclassing question.
If I dip one level into cleric as a wizard, just to pick up cure wounds, would I be able to use the spell cure wounds on a higher lvl spell slot even though the cleric part of my build only has 2 lvl 1 slots?
Yes
It still counts as a cleric spell, and you’d use CHA instead of INT.
And it would slightly delay getting the more powerful wizard spells.
But you’d be able to use any spell slot you have available.
Hi. New here. Are all online games paid now? I have used roll20 with internet friends once before.
Not all, just a lot. It helps DMs to get some extra money and also helps with player commitment.
Thank you for feedback.
Winghorn Press's stuff is great. The Delian Tomb and The Silvyr Tower are also good picks; if they're not on DMsGuild, Googling will turn them up.
Is DMing the hardest part of D&D?
people are the hardest part of dnd🙏
