I guess that depends on how you define an adventure, and how you structure the surrounding events. If the adventure is “go to a place that has a lot of gold and take that gold” then yeah, they can take as much time as they want and long rest a few days beforehand, but if the adventure is “stop the lich from doing a ritual to destroy the world” then they are on a time crunch and can’t really afford to wait. It all depends on the context
Ok thanks that’s helpful. So it’s up to me as a DM to structure it so they can spend time long resting as required etc.
Yeah
The amout of encounters you run is UP TO YOU, as the DM
Running more encounters per day increases the difficulty level because players have finite resources. The more fights, harder to win over time
If you are looking to push your player to make decisions and be efficient, then you give fewer chancss to rest
Conversely, if you want a light day and arent looking to challenge, then you make it easy to rest more often
We cannot tell you what to do. It is up to you to decide what is appropriare for the level of difficulty your players expect
Hey sorry i was going over the rules and i came across this, I think i understand what it means but i want to be certain the rule i came across is this-
Games may not include ERP or other NSFW content.
Im pretty sure it means not to go into detail in terms of RP and also pictures, however my question is silly but im dead serious just to fully understand. Are players (more than likely a bard) allowed to "haha seduce the dragon!"
Just realized that the question doesnt really matter to me because i never try to seduce anything.
But i already asked so now im in too deep and now i need to know
Are you asking whether its possible with the games mechanics or whether its against like…this servers rules
server rules?
What players are or are not allowed to do is more up to culture and norms than rules. Nothing in the rules prevents trying stuff like that, but not everyone is comfortable with that style of gameplay. You need to have that conversation with the people in your play-group to set proper expectations and boundaries. This is what is commonly referred to as “session 0”
Thank you! thats what i was looking for, Wasnt sure if server rules where strict with DM's campaigns
I know but if u get a game through this server i was curious if players would report back to this server to be removed from it because if ur contributing to a toxic game environment im sure they wouldnt want you in this server interacting with its community
This server doesn’t not monitor or regulate any D&D games played by its members. The LFG channels are meant as a tool for allowing people to find each other, and not an official vetting process
Thank you so much for ur help!
My pleasure
Hello
Welcome
There’s discussion to be had about whether you actually need to let them do this, or to what degree you let them
?looking - this bot post below ⬇️ should explain the basic process for finding a game in this server
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Thank you! ❤️
Do all backgrounds get speciality’s or only some?
“Specialities” isn’t an official term in 5e. Could you clarify what you are referring to?
I was looking at the rules and the criminal has a criminal speciality and I thought that was odd because the others do not have anything like it
Oh gotcha. Yeah that’s only a part of some backgrounds. It does nothing mechanically, it’s just something to help you develop your character’s backstory so you can role play them better.
oh.. I see what you mean there. There are other backgrounds that have similar things like Sage. It doesn't really give anything mechanically, just helps give the character and the DM a more narrow avenue to focus on when things come up
Careful with spoilers there, please.
oops, sorry
Players would typically divide any treasure amongst themselves, and use their character sheet to track what their own character has.
ok! thanks
For simplicity, you might designate someone to track any unassigned treasure, and then divide it once the session is over.
That way it doesn’t interrupt the story.
I'm a DM looking to run the Rime of the frostmaiden campaign however I don't know how I can integrate a player's character because he wants to go with an evil alignment. Do I allow him to be evil? How do I go about making him save icewind dale?
You're allowed to tell players "No" if their choice would present a significant obstacle to the game happening to everyone's satisfaction.
I initially thought about just not allowing evil alignments, however I read up on the Caer-Dineval section of the book ||wearing a chardalyn amulet can have a d6 chance per day to convert them to lawful evil|| and now I'm very confused as to what to do
You can change anything in the module you like. If you don't want to deal with evil alignments (a stance I share), you can just take out any elements related to that.
I see, thank you so much
So I’m playing a gnome artificer any tips for a new role player on how to role play
What kind of reactions can I use once per round (like common around species/universal reaction)
Class features and spells will say if they require a Reaction. You can use a Reaction for Opportunity Attacks.
I believe the only one that's universally available is an Opportunity Attack. The others depend on the character build
Joth
yeah like he said 🙂
There is also the reaction granted by the Ready action
Hello
Welcome!
Hruu?
use dndbeyond, they have a great charecter build tool
Ok 👍🏼
Speaking of which, I just made my first charecter and want to start playing. Any tips on how to get into a game? Any other places i can find a game?

Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Please read #find-a-game - carefully - and then feel free to use our LFG channels.
Also recommend looking for games/groups in your local area (game stores, comic book shops, even libraries), maybe try Roll20, Demiplane, or other RPG/game websites/servers/forums.
Your class and background dictate what you start with, subject to any specific rules set by the DM
Does the DM tell the players to make perception checks or do the players say they want to make one or a mix of both? Same with other checks
The players ask if they want to look/search something then the DM ask them to roll a Perception check.
The DM uses the PCs' Passive Perception checks if the DM doesn't want the players to know something is there (such as stealthed enemies).
Aaah okay what if a situation happens where the DM wants use a stealth enemy but the players like try to perception check the area
Only if the players call for it.
Like say there are some goblins hiding in a bush in the area in front of them. But then the players ask to do a perception check before they reach that area does it not apply because the area is above them or can they spot the hidden enemy with the perception check.
Idk I may have worded this weird
I’ll try to shorten it can the players use a perception check to spot a hidden enemy the DM was planing on making a stealth enemy and using passive perception
If the players suspect something/someone is in an area and they want to look around, then you as the DM can ask them to roll for a perception check.
Otherwise, you the DM compare their Passive Perception to the enemies' Stealth rolls.
Aaah alright so it’s like an either or
It's situational.
Depends on what you mean by magic stones…
Magic stones?
no like artifacts
You can view the full list of artifacts here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items?filter-rarity=7
(Though I suspect that’s still not what you meant to ask…)
No thank you its what I was searching for
but what does attunement mean?
wait but I cant see any kind of description of this items
Attunement essentially limits how many powerful magic items someone can use at once.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/magic-items#Attunement
That list will tell you which artifacts exist and which books they can be found in.
But you’ll need the books themselves for the details.
When you're attuned to a powerful magic item you are magically connected to it. This is a gameplay mechanic balance to limit the number of powerful magic items PCs can have.
(Or you can buy the items individually there on D&D Beyond.)
how can you be attuned to an artifact?
Because it's still a magic item.
Artifacts are basically the highest tier of magic items.
Magic item rarity tiers:
Common
Uncommon
Rare
Very Rare
Legendary
Artifact
I linked to the rules for it above. ☝️
But the short answer is that you need a short rest.
An hour spent focused on the item.
um hi
So you have to do it in every 24 hour i guess?
No.
Once you're attuned to a magic item it remains attuned until you de-attune to it.
Dude I love ur name
Again, read the link above.
If I have extra money to spend should I buy anything for dnd? (I will be playing online)
Well first try the game with just the free basic rules and then if you want more option, the Players Handbook is a good book to get.
Luckily for me that will be me
I'm going to dm for the first time and my friends who will be playing with me wanna do a sillier lighthearted campaign and their characters are all kinda goofy silly teehee what are official campaigns that are kinda quirky?
Is it better to buy through dnd beyond or physical?
Decide which way you're going to invest because if you go one way, you don't get the other (e.g. you buy physical, you don't get digital access)
Probably Acquisitions Inc. or Rick and Morty.
I like DnDBeyond so I have everything available via a browser if needed
(Though the latter is out of print.)
If you prefer the feel of looking through a book physically and manually writing stuff down and the benefit of always being able to access the content without internet and also having a decoration for your room go physical but it you prefer relatively cheaper books, easier character creation and ease of use then go digital
Lowkey I do prefer physical books but I’m worried about it anything would get hindered sense we will be playing online
I like the feel of physical books but dnd beyond is just so convenient that I only have a few physical books now and everything else is digital, and the physical books I have I own their digital counterparts
You can check out the free Basic Rules if you want an idea of how the books work on D&D Beyond.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Will I be restricted in the dnd beyond character creation if I buy everything physically? I mean at some point I would like to be able to set everything up without the use of the app
You could use the homebrew tools to recreate those character options on the site.
Or you can buy just the character options you need at the moment.
Whatever you spend on those gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
You would be as you don't own the content digitally if you own it physically but you can buy specific character content off dnd beyond for cheap or home brew it manually (not recommended) and anything you buy from a book on dnd beyond discounts the full digital book further
There’s also the physical+digital bundles here that include both versions (currently on sale, too!).
https://dndstore.wizards.com/us
Bought it digitally I will probably go back and buy it physically later
When you play online do you use physical die or is there a software I have to download to play with other people?
Depends on the group but there are online digital dice rollers - DnDBeyond even provides some with their digital character sheets
Both exist, but which your group uses or allows is up to your group.
(You can even roll dice right here in Discord. Head to #ddb-avrae-commands and type !roll 2d6+3)
Oh ok 👍🏼 thank you
Can I share a book in a already started campaign?
If someone has a master tier subscription and has enabled content sharing on that campaign
Someone does.
Guess that’s me
When Content Sharing is enabled for a campaign, everyone’s books get shared with everyone else.
Not just the subscriber’s.
I’m the only one with the books too though smh. I’m just joking I don’t mind that much lol. But I can share the books mid campaign I don’t have to start a whole new one?
Howdy all, I am going to be DMing for the first time for my new Middle grades DnD Club (I'm the supervisor) I last ever played 3.5 years ago
never have DM'd how do I basically begin like EVERYTHING?
Well I'd recommend giving the free basic rules a look-over: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
But also check the pinned message here in the channel for other useful resources to help get you started.
I appreciate it, like I said I've played before, but it has been YEARS
Yeah no worries! A lot has changed but it's still a fun game!
I'm basically going to be running 3.5 because it's what I remember
Yeah, the creation date of the campaign is irrelevant.
Perfectly fine too! We have #dnd-elder-editions if you need to brush up on 3.5 rules or double check things.
When dming a adventure campaign like stormwrecker isle how do I know when to milestone level up a player? Will the book tell me when it's appropriate to level them up?
Usually adventure books will tell you when to level up characters or at least what level characters are expected to be at for a section of the adventure.
That book does indeed specify when to have them level up.
||At the end of chapters two and three. Presumably at the end of the adventure itself in chapter four as well, if you plan to continue with your own adventure.||

I have friends who have been playing DnD for 30+ years and they advocate for me to use a "point bank system" instead of rolling dice for attributes how does that work?
is that like in Diablo for example when you create a character and each base state is 5 but you have say 40 skill points to spend between stuff
Point buy that's it
No it's like... you start with base 8 on each stat and spend a pool of points to buy upgrades to stats. See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#VariantCustomizingAbilityScores
That's D&D 5e's point buy system though. Check with #dnd-elder-editions if you're using D&D 3.5 as folks there may have other info that can help.
30+? damn your friends are the OGs
40+ for me 😛
when a wizard uses a spell that has a monetary cost (for example: a melee weapon worth at least 1 sp) is it better to make the player look for said material or just pay the cost with money?
Up to the DM if they want to roleplay it out or handwave it.
I was reading up on the wizard spells and i found lv1 spell: Protection from Evil and Good which costs holy water (25gp) or powdered silver and iron. I find it a little pricey for a lv 1 spell but since its my first time playing dnd and DMing I'm afraid to use too much homebrew/house rules
The powdered silver and iron is cheaper than a vial of holy water.
The point of material components with gold value is is a gameplay mechanic balance issue to curtail players from "spamming" that particular spell and use it sparingly.
Yes, but 2 questions:
how much is the powdered silver and iron worth? I can't find anything on it except a few forums
the original spell doesn't state any price, I just searched up holy water and found its cost in DnDBeyond. Does it not cost anything?
Also can be flavor for role play. But if mechanically, it is burdensome, then tone it down
it doesnt consume the component, and if it doesnt have a stated cost in the spell then you dont need it if youre using a spellcasting focus
Do merchants have change for my platinum coin or is that up to the Dm?
That's up to the DM.
Bro the monk seems super cool
Gotta have money to buy weapons for the team 😤
How much do elf’s hit for or do they even hit for anything
Their attack roll is based on their class and level.
Damage is based on weapon and stats

Hi guys idk if this is the approppriate channel, but I would like to ask what dnd videogames are good to play after bg3. I didn't fall in love with a game since dragon quest 8
so I want more stuff like bg3. Ty in advance
A lot of video game chatter happens in #non-dnd-topics - might try asking there.

Hmm maybe try Elder Scrolls, if your not super into high fantasty but played it before then you can try some older games 🙂 Witcher 3 is pretty good as well you got the Fallout games alot of good thing 🙂
Hmm maybe 🙂
That new command brings up the bots auto message with links to useful resources - see #dnd-newcomers message
If you can’t see that message check your Discord settings to show embeds.
i can see it but i would need to think 🙂
Holy cow so much info, really wanna play dnd for the first time but dont even know where to start lol
Start by skimming through the free basic rules (see pinned message in the channel) and then maybe watching some D&D liveplay streams to kind of see the game mechanics in action. Then maybe try building a character sheet or two referring back to the free basic rules. Then go find a group to play with - you’ll learn a lot through actual play.
Also don’t feel like you have to memorize the rules - but knowing how character sheets work and the core mechanics of skill checks, attack rolls, and saving throws will help you out.

I already know i wanna make a tiefling, they sound awesome
If you have any specific questions feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel
hey guys, im new to the server, and pretty new to dnd as a whole. I went on dnd beyond to create a character sheet (at the reccomendation of my friend) and im just wondering if somemone could tell me if it makes sense, or if there is something i should chanage on it? I'm not currrently in any campaigns, just trying to set up my first character. if this isnt the right channel i apologize, please do let me know! Thanks in advance. 🙂
#character-discussion would be a good place to ask 👌
ok thank you!
I need help. I'm a dm in a campaign that I made a little different. I just drew a map and my players can go wherever they want and whatever they want. But I don't know if it was a good idea. My players are losing interest and I need to make something interesting. What would be something good to keep it interesting?
That's tricky. How deep into the campaign are you?
This is probably a better question to ask in #dm-discussion because its more about the intricacies of being a DM, rather than about the basic rules of the game
oo, good point
Help needed, I am having difficulty finding a game, my odd Time zone combined with the fact it's my first time is making it really difficult to find a group, I've already checked the find a game and posted in the Looking for DM channel, is there anything else I can do?
You could try other websites, like reddit, or facebook, or whatever. I'm not super familar with what other options might be out there, but I know there are plenty
Keep looking because new games pop up.
D&D Youtubers have their own Discord servers that have LFG channels.
any big ones you could point me to?
I made this guide that covers some other sites with Looking for Game/Group tools you might check out: #third-party-tools-archive message
site can’t provide a secure connection
Not sure why that's the case. I can send you the PDF over private message.
I would appreciate that
hey guys i recently got in to D&D and my friends are wanting me to DM our first game ever is there any already pre made campaign that would walk me through till i get good enough making my own storys.
The Lost Mine of Phandelver is free with all D&D Beyond accounts. It was written for new players and DMs in mind.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
aw dang OMYAC was too fast for me. I'll second the recommendation for LMOP.
Any of the starter sets—Lost Mine of Phandelver, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, or the Stranger Things set—would do the job. Stormwreck Isle in particular seems better at helping the new DM along the process.
Awesome thanks for the recommendations ill definitely take a look at all of them
Hey guys I’ve just bought stormwrek isle with my girlfriend, I’m really struggling with the roleplay and doing the dungeon master? Anyone got any tips?
Is there anyway playing onlienv

Thank yiu!
Howdy all, if I can ask a silly question how exactly does picking skills work for character sheets? I was given as this is my first dming opportunity a heap of blank character sheets with absolutely nothing on them but also a bunch of partially filled out character sheets that have skills with little x's in them. How does that work in terms of players picking their skills?
For example the barbarian has X's in the skills for alchemy appraised balance bluff concentration diplomacy disguise etc does that mean that they cannot learn those skills?
Those look like 3.5E skills.
If you want help with 3.5E then head on over to #dnd-elder-editions
Should I repost my question there?
We primarily deal with 5E in most of the channels here because it's the current (and most popular) edition.
Yes this is 3.5
Yes, because you're going to confuse new players to 5E...
Complete beginner here: why do some campaigns start above lv1 ?
Hello there, so I'm kinda new to the game, and wanted to try being part of some campaign for gathering experience on playing. Any place to sign up for? Btw I've only partly read the introductions, but I think I'm capable of a match or so. Message so long 'cause I don't know how long the slow mode is.

Sorry, but …u know this is a discussion server right?
Also, its for DnD, the tabletop game, not a computer game
So if a character Is not proficient in a skill that would apply to the situation it just turns into a regular check?
Yep
finding a dnd "match" takes time, and planning.
Or rather, it was always an ability check.
Man I butchered that sentence
Whether or not your skill proficiency applies.
People might colloquially call it a skill check, but that’s not an official rules term.
So it’s like a thing if you are proficient in a skill it’s still an ability check you just also get the proficiency bonus?
Yes
You can also like combine the ability’s right and call for like a str(intimidate) check or something.
Yes
Yes. This is how all "skill checks" are written in official publications
Can you combine the base abilities too or is it just for skills? Like could you go a str(dex) check. Or a athletics(acrobatics) or something like that
Oki i just wanted to play
This is not a video game, you will not be able to just play on-demand
No, you can combine any ability with any skill (as long as the DM agrees that's an appropriate check), but not combine two abilities in a check.
So wait days?
You can check out advertisements for game and make a post for yourself to find a game but I'm afraid this isn't a server for pick-up games
sometimes yeah u can do
How do I join waiting list

Aaah okay so can’t do two abilities or two skills. But can only do one ability and a skill?
read those posts
Pick the skill you need appropriate
Its not a "waiting list" type of thing. You need to reach out to a DM who is running a game, and try to work out your own schedules
You can also give players a choice if appropriate
Aw oki
if they come across a body, you can have them roll Medicine or Investigation or Survival or whatever
Not in a single check. Your DM might design an encounter or scenario with multiple checks, though. E.g. use Dex(Acrobatics) to jump up to the window, Str(Athletics) to pry the rusty bars apart, Dex(Thieves Tools) to pick the lock, and Wis(Perception) to tell if the coast is clear to drop inside.
If you want to make it slightly deeper, you can give different information based on the skill
Ah think I understand if I ask them to do like a str check a skill may also apply which they can use with conjunction with the str so they also get the proficiency bonus if the skill applies.
If you cant be patient looking for a game, this might not be your game. It will never be fast
Also, you can use some of your own time and energy and check other servers
Lastly, you can find a place to play in person
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view good guide to finding games online (credit iamrazorwing)
Yeah, exactly. If they don't have proficiency, then any virtual tool you use (like DnD Beyond) will still let you roll that combination, but it won't have that extra bonus.
yeah, even if you find a game and plan a time. it's still at its core a rather "slow" game
Id be ok if I atleast had something to work with, atm 0 games 0 people planning a game
Literally nothing
Lol
you literally joined today
go dm some campaigns you might be interested in and see if they respond
Yeh like 25 minutes ago
Joining a D&D table isn't like a video game lobby you can hop in and out.
There are waaaaay more players than DMs, so DMs can afford to be more picky who they can join their tables.
You might want to consider attracts you to this game. If you play DnD, 25 minutes is longer than the period you would usually wait for it to be "your turn" in combat.
Patience, young padawan.
We should probably ask…have you read the rules?
Have you created a character for practice yet?
A game typically will be a recurring group, lasting several months or years.
My current game is celebrating its anniversary in about 3 weeks. They are now level 7.
Oh my days
#find-a-game can point you toward the available games. Please don't randomly ping users who may not even have a game available.
Baldur's Gate is based on the same rules, same skills, same classes, with some changes and tweaks to make it work for a video game. Most of the adventures are also set in the same fictional universe - Baldur's Gate 3 is actually written sort of as a sequel to a D&D module called Descent into Avernus.
However, the experience of playing is very very different. Somewhat like the difference between playing a game of football in real life, vs playing fantasy football.
D&D itself is essentially you and your friends telling a story together.
My campaign is maxed out at six players. It has been going on for over 1.5 years and will last at least another 2.5 years. I don't accept players who never played D&D before because I don't have the time to walk them through the rules.
Enjoying Baldur's Gate is not necessarily going to translate into enjoying D&D. Though, I would say that if you didn't enjoy Baldur's Gate 3, you also probably won't like playing D&D.
BG3 is about you as the main character with a bunch of NPCs tagging along. D&D the TTRPG is a group of PCs where noone is specifically a singular "main character."
Id happily be one of six
Just I would prefer playing daily to once every week or something
Just to push things along
Every part of a D&D game requires prepwork for the DM. A Daily Pace is pretty much unsustainable, unless you run the game in very specific ways. Every hour of play, I probably put in 2-3 in prep work ahead of time.
Couldn't you go off a game with some changes
Playing daily is very unlikely. DMs have lives and may take a lot of time to prepare for each session.
D&D isn't a video game.
Example shadow of amn?
Even running an entirely pre-written adventure, the prep work is real
Ah fair enough
Instead of spending my free time with my wife I do prep work for my campaign, even months in advance.
I wouldn't want to waste someones time
Lower your expectations.
You might be able to play D&D 7 days a week if you found 7 different DMs to run 7 different games, but that is extremely unlikely, and wouldn't help with the story pacing issue
Watch some actual plays of D&D campaigns on Youtube or Twitch.
Tbh I just thought it sounded fun, I didn't realise the work involved
I'm running an enounter next session, and I had to set up 12 drow raiding a house while the players arive. So I need a map of the house - which I get from a patreon creator. But getting it into foundry, there's still some tweaks. And then I want to put in the drow, but I don't like the default icon and I don't want them all to look the same, so that's 30 minutes of scouring google images for better pics and setting up each one. It all adds up.
I do it because I enjoy doing that, but it does put a limit on the pace.
There's a lot of work on the DM side of things. That's one reason why there aren't as many DMs to players.
It's also a reason why if you want to do some daily DnD stuff, being a DM is the best thing to be, because there's always something you can be doing!
Wow jale u have images too
Yes I use a Virtual Tabletop, so my players are represented with little image coins. But they can also do things like fire animated spells at each other, which is neat 😄
Even if I use a map not generated by me (looking on Google Images or a map maker) I still do tweaks for them, set up it Foundry VTT, write my DM notes, design encounters, design new monsters / magic items, etc.
Honestly if someone wanted me to DM daily, I would ask to be paid, because I would have to give up my job to find enough time to prep and play that much
Sounds really fun ngl
A paid DM probably makes less than minimum wage if taking into consideration all the hours for prep work.
This seems problematic
if u are this impatient on here, any table is going to be challenged to handle it
Dnd is not a video game, but it seems like you are treating it like one
it is also a collaborative game which inherently means sitting back and letting others have time
Its a role play game so sometimes it will JUST be the DM talking
You may go an entire session with no combat
Zero i have never played
Yup, I've had sessions which were essentially "shopping episodes" where I did minimum talking as the DM.
It doesn’t sound like you have any grasp of the actual gameplay
But you want to “just use your bg3 character”
And you “memorized all the rules”
Cmon stop
Am a newbie
let's try and be a little nicer maybe? this is the newcomers channel after all
And the rules thing lol why ask that
Have you tried your local game store?
was it BG3 that got you interested in the tabletop experience?
whats BG3 lol
❤️
Did you read the free Basic Rules?
Baldur's Gate 3
Oldman sure did, every last word
thankyu 🙂
have you joined the #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers channel? you can talk about game experiences there, find some folks to pal around with while you wait for a table.
I did I asked if any ps5 bg3 games were going, hopefully someone joins an can headset together
lol how long does a game generally last ive heard like 2-5 hours is that normal? 🙂
sorry if thats a dumb question ive just never played befpre XD
Yeah, that's about right
You must live in a city to have a local game store
A typical session is 2 to 4 hours.
cool 🙂
TV analogy for D&D
One-shot = made for tv movie
Adventure = a tv miniseries
Campaign = a multi-season tv series
Depends a lot in the group. Mine is about 2.5 hours because one of our players is an hour ahead of the rest of us and falls asleep if we play too long
My current campaign has been going on for over 1.5 years and will last at least another 2.5 years. We play once a week for a 3-hour long session.
Look on roll20, you can find games there as well
we have the #looking-for-players for that purpose. You can find out how to post there using #find-a-game
i will 🙂 but ive never played before and dont know anyon who plays just people who are interested lol
Bunni maybe we should just make a game ourselves
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view good guide to finding games online (credit iamrazorwing) have a look @hollow hull there are more places then here to find games spread your net wide
🙂
lol
any other newbies? we can try and find a DM who is willing to do a teaching type session 🙂
That would be cool, count me in if we find anyone
I’m new as well. I’ve only played a short one shot
Me bravely running away leaving bunni to fight the goblins
Yo I’m thinking about getting into dnd after playing bg3 how much does it cost to get started?

For the people with experience would you all recommend trying to dm even with little to no experience playing dnd before? Or is it better to start off as a player?
I think if you are confident, you can pull it off. Heck, I did. I was not a player before I was a DM. It will help if your players are also new, so you are learning together. I also really recommend running one of the tutorial campaigns - Lost mine of Phandelver, or Dragon of Stormwreck Isle.
I would never discourage folks from coming in as a DM, the only thing I'd recommend is using a smaller adventure like Lost Mines rather than some folks who try and put D&D into a world they've created - makes learning the rules more difficult if you don't give yourself the structure
I would recommend being a player first so there's less pressure on you to "know everything" that a DM is shouldered with. Learn from other DMs with their DMing styles and also the rules (at their expense).
It really comes down to who you are. If you are the kind of person who, when you play a board game, automatically finds themselves being the person who knows the rules, and can tell them to other people, then you are also probably going to enjoy DMing. It's not a prerequisite, but there's a big overlap between those groups of people!
Thanks for all the advice. I think I understand the rules a decent amount and in any case I can look at the handbook. The hardest part for me I think would be describing things and roleplaying so many different npcs
That's why it's best to start with the adventures that Jayn and I are recommending - they have a limited cast, and limited scope. So you aren't going to have to deal with "I choose to walk to the other side of town and talk to the first shopkeeper I see" sort of shenanigans that a city game might have.
Keep it simple the first part of lost mine only has a couple of npcs
Do you guys know the best site to create a 3d printed miniature
Heroforge is a big one.
Heroforge is very popular.
Thanks
uhhh
so what stat is for what
i have some idea about some of em but mostly idk anything
Have you read the section in The basic rules on the stats
no...
The basic rules are available for free online. You can find the chapter on using ability scores here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores
thank you
ughhh
this needs too much brain power
i might not start to create a character from scratch at 21:51
when it's also school tomorrow
even a simple rp character would be hard to create rn
haha well maybe think of a backstory right now and do the sheet tomorrow
The dndbeyond website has a free character creating tool (though you should read the basic rules first lol)
yeahhh
tho it doesn't have the harengon race
at least I didn't find it
I'm guessing you'd have to buy something to unlock it
If you go to the webstore on dndbeyond you can buy individual races for 1.99
Correct. Harengon is published in the book "Monsters of the Multiverse." You must either purchase that book, or purchase the individual race from that book, as Enoki mentioned
yeahh but I don wanna spend moneyy. especially on the internet... I know it'd be easier but idk. im not even sure how things will turn out and if I'll ever even have time to play dnd
so rn im just doing the harder but free way
How does attacking from stealth work? Do you just get an advantage on roll and double dmg or something along those lines? Also what would be the difference from attacking from stealth and surprising an enemy
Just advantage. It doesn't change the damage.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#UnseenAttackersandTargets
you could just "reskin" a race you own, for example you could have the stats of a normal human but be a harengon, if flavour/roleplay is what you care about
I guess I should have just waited until I was at comebat
could always homebrew the race in ?
When "attacking from stealth" you use the "unseen attacker" rules, which states that you get advantage on the attack roll. This increases your chance to get a critical hit by roughly ~5%, but it doesn't do anything other than that
A creature that's surprised can't do anything until after its first turn.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Surprise
I think stealth just allows you to have the element of surprise on your side. So, whoever is being attacked misses action one round of combat
true but theyre new
ah yeah tru could be a bit too much effort for wanting to get into the game
You enemy does not skip out on a turn?
Ask your DM if they allow homebrew races.
pardon ?
I was replying to someone else saying they didn't want to pay for the book/race
wasn't a question haha sorry
Sorry.
all good ^_^ nw
If you surprised the creature at the start of combat, then they would not get a turn in the first round, that's correct. However, you can take the "hide" action in combat as well, which means its possible to "attack from stealth" without surprising the enemy. Those are 2 different things
Aaah
Spell slot wise is a paladin like one level below a wizard? So like if a Paladin and a wizard are both 10. A paladin will have the spell slots a wizard had at 9
Paladins don't get spellcasting until level 2
its 2
nope theyre far inferior in terms of spellcasting
Paladins are half-casters so they don't get as many spell slots.
theyre roughly half as far into the progression but more than half as weak due to higher level spells being wacky and wondrous
How do I start?

So when wizards and Paladins both start wizards are already much farther into magic progression?
I started with a Starter Set. It helps a lot with not being overwhelmed with TMI.
That's the point of being a wizard, they're specialized in spellcasting (they're fullcasters).
Paladins and rangers "dabble" in spellcasting since they're first and foremost attack with weapons (they're half-casters).
what up y'all!
If you are multi classing with like a wizard and paladin how would you like add that up I understand that a paladin is like 1/2 a level
I’m trying to join a campaign, and as far as I know it’s not full, but no one is responding and it’s been a day or two. Should I be more patient or is that my fault for being impatient
after a day or 2 maybe send a follow up from i wo uld like to hear from you soon or somethign and also depending on your level of commitment to that group maybe try to cast a wider net and try to get in touch with multiple groups
Finding a good group to join is like dating, expect to get ignored, ghosted, and/or drama.
Keep looking.
I have a small group with only one veteran (not me), if you wanna join you can. The DM and I are still figuring things out tho
You determine your available spell slots by adding together all your levels in the bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, and wizard classes, and half your levels (rounded down) in the paladin and ranger classes. Use this total to determine your spell slots by consulting the Multiclass Spellcaster table.

Where are you, friend? I’m looking for another PC
I am a pc
That’s player character right…?
Ye
Yes, I’m a DM. We only have 2 sometimes 3 PCs in our group. We could use another
Yes I’m down
It Takes time but glad you are excited remember to have fun
You looking to play online or? We’re in the Pittsburgh area and usually meet in person but have been thinking about expanding to online
I’m in that time zone but nowhere near there, I can do online
Should we go to dm?
Hello!
Hi
I've been looking to get to playing again after almost a year. Do any of you guys have a spot in a game where I can join?
Check out #find-a-game
I'm trying to, but most of the time I can't figure out what the times are, cause I'm Brazilian
That depends entirely on what you're looking for.
Rio de Janeiro is UTC-3, New York is UTC-4 (EST)
Thanks!
@smoky adder idk some random guys that will play for fun
Hello
I just don't want to talk with chat GBT all day bro
sorry
In general, though, CR 3 means it’s a moderate challenge for a party of four 3rd level adventurers.
thanks
Yo is the offer still open for pc? I’m new to dnd tho
Like rly new
I love fire emblem and medieval stuff so I thought picking this up could be fun
This channel is not for setting up games; feel free to discuss in DMs or make a post in the appropriate channel
I just went into another server without knowing I was in the wrong server and talking about dnd and people were confused and I was embarrassed
Does anyone have any helpful videos for new dms?
But anyways I’m new and have no clue what so ever about dnd I just like the concept and it seems cool so I’m here in hopes to learn more

are the starter items are a combination of the background and class you choose ?
Yup! Tho the items you get from your class are generally much stronger than the items from your background - those are mostly for flavor and a bit of starting gold.
alright thanks

Thank you!
Little confused what this is trying to say “You move at half speed in difficult terrain--moving 1 foot in difficult terrain costs 2 feet of speed”
Huh?
are you confused on the "costing 2 feet of movement" part?
I'm confused on everything
Yeah that part is confusing me a little especially the part where it says it cost 2 feet of speed
I've never even played dnd
OK so most characters have 30 feet movement. That's how much they can move in a given turn. Movement is a resource to be spent. Difficult terrain makes movement more costly. So if you go through 5 feet of difficult terrain, rather than have 25 feet left like you would on ordinary terrain, you have 20 left
whenever you move 1 foot in game, that costs you 1 foot of movement. the amount of feet you have per round is your base walking speed. if you are in difficult terrain, then moving 1 foot cost 2 feet of movement instead.
Oh
Aaah I understand. Does this only apply during combat?
Outside of combat (which is turn-based) things move "real time" so you don't normally track movement per round.
no, when you are exploring a dungeon or something like that you use this too, but if you are traveling long distances it doesn't apply, there are different rules.
Ah so when exploring a dungeon and you use all your movement do you take a rest? Or something along those lines?
It applies outside of combat but outside of combat it's kind of meaningless. Unless you're travelling through a swamp or something and the DM will notice that the entire party will be moving at half speed, which might be important if you must get somewhere quickly. Or not
You regain all of your movement at the start of next turn. And you can take the dash action to double your movement speed for the turn
Characters only get tired in a some specific scenarios.
The movement speed listed is basically how far a creature can move in one round (without using the Dash action).
Remember that D&D is a game of turn-based combat with its roots in tabletop wargaming.
Is there a difference between darkness and a heavily obscured area
Depends. Are you talking about the darkness spell or any other related means of creating magical darkness?
Otherwise, a normal, non-magical darkness is a heavily obscured area
Aaah alright the book listed then separated and stated “Darkness creates a heavily obscured area. Characters face darkness outdoors at night (even most moonlit nights), within the confines of an unlit dungeon or a subterranean vault, or in an area of magical darkness” do I was not sure if they where super different
Basically, for the purposes of the rules, darkness is a kind of heavily obscured area, but there are other kinds.
Specific vs general, you know?
Aah yes I understand thank you for the help!
Basically, a heavily obscured area is heavily obscured from the point of view of a given character but might not be for another character depending on point of view, abilities... A darkness area is just what the area is.
Absolutely- you in EST?
Yeah
I’ll only be will to do online sessions though
K feel free to DM me
👍

welcome!
I am confused how healing works on a short rest
Say your like level 5 does that mean you have 5 hit dice to spend to get health back?
On a short rest characters can use their hit dice pool to roll dice and heal that much HP back.
The hit dice pool is restored by half after a long rest (e.g. if you have 4 d8 hit dice, and you use 3 of them, on a long rest you get 2 hit dice back in your pool).
And yes at level 5 you have 5 hit dice.
The hit dice type (e.g. d8, d6, etc.) is determined by your class(es).
Friends, I see that the DND Adventure the Lost mine of Phandelver has a map in it how best could I print that map out for use in campaign?
I’ll keep you in mind
I’ll probably brush up on rules before I approach you
Print to PDF, take to local print shop and print out at desired size.
Or use a Virtual Tabletop (VTT) and copy the map image to there and use it as needed.
What's Virtual Tabletop?
A tool to run D&D games with maps and tokens online
Something like Roll20: https://roll20.net/
Or Owlbear.rodeo: https://www.owlbear.rodeo/
Or many others - feel free to use an internet search to find many, many others.
Basically I have a feeling I will need to show the players a map know what I mean
or will middle schoolers just be fine with their dice and character sheets lol
Hi everyone! I'm looking for games as a player and heard that I could find some here! How would I go about that?
Does taking out your weapon count as the free part of interacting the environment you get?
Just by reaching out. I'm in the process of trying to find an online campaign to play in (I DM IRL)
You can draw or stow one weapon as a free action! Others use up your actual action economy.
Please read (carefully) #find-a-game - this explains how to use our LFG channels to find a game.
Thanks so much! Will do :D
If your pool is like 5 you round down and still get 2? Or do you get like 2.5
You round down
Does anybody use a tool called encounter+ on iOS?
Would that be a tool Id need to get into the game?
I have a question regarding the setup when I am playing with friends. How is tactical combat performed? Digital implementation in most cases has all maps prepared in advance, is it the same irl or do people use plain paper with squares for all tactical combat situations?
Do most dm’s use it?
I run my games Theater of the Mind and the occasional background map/image - no tokens or grids to mess about with.
It works for my group but may not always be appropriate.
You may want to check with folks in #dm-discussion and #third-party-tools-archive on how they set up and run things.
I wouldn't say most.
Generally I've seen (this is anecdotally so not scientific at all) Roll20, followed by Owlbear.rodeo, Foundry VTT and then others as far as "usage" goes.
I haven't heard of Encounter+ being discussed frequently. Not saying it's not a good tool or useful - just probably not as well known or used.
Anyway for more VTT discussion, check with folks in #dm-discussion or #third-party-tools-archive - this is not really a topic for new-to-D&D players and trying to learn core game rules and concepts.
Are you asking about in-person?
There are all sorts of maps available that you can draw on with wet or dry markers, with 1 inch grids
If u want a greater investment, you can get maps with different terrain (forest, snow, volcano, etc)
If you want to dish out real money, you can buy physical terrain pieces of varying quality, all the way up to hand painted and small batch stuff for thousands
OTOH u can buy wrapping paper for a buck or two and use the backside which has a 1x1 grid on it
Or graphing paper
U can spend as much or as little as approximate for your situation
If you ready a spell In combat does that mean you can hold the spell for your next turn?
“Ready” is an action. If requires concentration, and your reaction to “release”. Your spell slot os consumed regardless
Ready
Sometimes you want to get the jump on a foe or wait for a particular circumstance before you act. To do so, you can take the Ready action on your turn, which lets you act using your reaction before the start of your next turn.
Hmmm during a ready action could you fire a spell? What options does ready allow?
Because it said something about channeling a spell and that slightly confused me
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Thank you! I’m reading through it all and i’m still sort of confused. Is anyone willing to explain?
use the bot command and it'll post in the correct channel for you, it gives you something to fill out for what kind of game you're looking for, your availability etc and people can message you based off that if they feel you're a good fit
"submitting a post" is the bolded section you want
I really want to learn how to use this server, but i’m still not getting it. I went to #find-a-game, but i’m not seeing where i can click bot command. I’m sorry 😭
in the channel #find-a-game type "/looking-for dm" without the quotation marks and itll set up the bot for the form
I think I understand ready. If your able to make multiple attacks can you grapple and shove in the same turn?
Ready is your Action
Oh no I mean outside of ready I was just saying I think I understand it that was a separate question my bad
“Extra Attack” is a class feature that only applies when you take the attack action ON YOUR TURN
Since “Ready” holds an action to occur with your reaction with a trigger on a different turn, you do not get Extra Attack
Oh no this question isn’t related to ready. I just worded it weird
“Grapple” and “Shove” are special melee attacks one can take to replace ONE of your attacks
therefore if you have Extra Attack you may replace one with grapple and one with shove
Or both with grapples, or both with shoves.
When you use one, it replaces one of your attacks, but I don’t see any reason you couldn’t use it again to replace another.
Is there anywhere i can play a kind of Walkthrough game? Like with a simple story, and it kinda shows you all the basics?

If you use a bonus action can you cast two spells or is it only one spell and a cantrip?
Despite the type of action - you can only cast one leveled spell per turn.
If it's a bonus action leveled spell you could cast a cantrip that takes an action but not a leveled spell that takes an action
Does this apply to class features like bardic inspiration?
Bardic inspiration is not a leveled spell. It's a class feature that uses your BA.
Aaaah alright thank you and I would assume concentration does not mess this up either?
Can I use searing smite with my armorer's thunder gauntlets?
when it asks for alignment and faith what do i put?
That’s up to you. These are more meant as role play prompts, to help you better understand and act as your character. They don’t have any mechanical use.
so when they ask for faith its something my charcater believes in?
Their religion, basically. What god do they worship, if any?
Using barding inspiration does not impact concentration. Damage, incapacitated status, a other concentration spell - only certain things affect concentration
This is not entirely accurate, there is no rule against two leveled spells.
A caster with Action Surge from fighter can cast two leveled spells, one with each Action.
The rule is:
If you cast any spell with your bonus action
You can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.
Please don't ping me in that as it doesn't help the person asking the question.
There are exceptions to the rule but I believe what I said is basically the rule you just quoted. Trying to give new folks the ground floor information.
Why does the goblin have +6 on stealth if he has a dox mod and proficiency of two shouldn’t it be plus 4?
Short answer; theyre NPC monsters, and thats what the statblock says. they arent using player rules
Monster stat blocks are trying to keep is simple
If u need a justification, lets just say they have expertise
In page 8 of the monster manual they talk about proficiency bonus by challenge rating, so they get a bonus +2 from that
The stat block already says Prof +2

As a dm and playing online how do ya'll keep track of enemies hp and other stuff about them during combat? I know there's websites/software that help in playing dnd online, just want opinions from ppl that do play online
Virtual tabletops (VTTs), such as owlbear.rodeo, Roll20, and FoundryVTT, use monster tokens that have the monsters' stats like AC and hp. So when they take damage, you subtract the damage from the token's hp.
Would you recommend any of those specifically?
Which one would you recommend the most if any, I mean
I use Foundry.
Thank you. I've seen you reply to quite a few people on here. You seem pretty cool OldMan

owlbear.rodeo is free.
Roll20 has a free account tier but also a paid monthly tier.
Foundry has an one-time $50 license.
Hello. I'm not too much of a newcomer at this point but I got a question that's been bugging me for a while and my dm didn't have a good answer
How does a halfling's lucky work... by that I mean... what if the second roll is also a 1?
You must use the new roll if Lucky is used
You have to use the number of the second roll regardless what it is, even an 1.
When you roll a 1 on the d20 for an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you can reroll the die and must use the new roll.
Okay. Thanks. Finally got a clear answer
Man I just wish someone could teach me everything about dnd
And I didn't have to do all the research
You’re gonna have to do some reading
The basic rules linked in the pinned messages have all the info you need
“Everything about dnd” is a lot more than can be conveyed over discord easily
You could muck about with D&D Beyond, get it to help you make a character, poke the various features to learn about it that way.
Yeah I know T-T
Perhaps
Hi
What's on your mind?
The question is really elevated with that pfp
Hi everyone! I'm kind of new to discord and I'd love to find a campaign to play, I think I'm in the right place? How can I post smth at the looking for dm page?
Hey all was wondering how i can join in on a game im new to D&D but willing to learn

I think I at least managed to decide what class I wanna be. Bard but there's just one problem. I'm not charismatic irl at all. I guess this is just a game tho and I can be whoever I want. But still
Actually it could be kinda funny
A bard with low charisma stats. But that probably wouldn't be playeble since it's their biggest advantage
Use describing words. Don't say "I think you're pretty I guess," say "Joxer compliments their outfit."
That's smart
"Joxer chats with the guard and tells a funny story about a duck." Etc
It's the reason why characters have ability scores and skills; so you don't have to be as intelligent/charismatic/wise/strong/dexterous/hardy as your character
Yehhhh
you could always just imagine you're a middle school boy with absolutely no sense of social boundaries. if you want to play a super charismatic bard
Just make sure it aligns with your D&D group's expectations of player behavior and all that - if you start weirding out your group, they may just ask you to leave the game. The game is supposed to be safe and fun for everyone and playing your character as someone with no social boundaries might hit too uncomfortably for your group.
yeah exactly. use that as a tool to make yourself more confident in playing the role but also use your common sense to see when you cross some actual, in real life boundaries
Sure
The roleplaying part I can do. But the skill part will take a lot of practice and preparation for me
Btw is dnd basicly just a super complicated live rpg game?
Not just their biggest advantage but all their spells are based on it
Kinda ig
I mean, if you wanted to seriously oversimplify it, I suppose so
Guys, it’s the first time I’m dm’ing. what are the best monsters for lvl 1 heroes?
There’s tons of options, it depends on what you want from them
And the theme of the enemies
I want to introduce my players to a first easy fight
What kinda theme? There’s tons of easy enemies
Goblins, zombies, bandits, wolves are some of the classics
Plenty to choose from for basically any situation
Can't go wrong with the classic goblin camp
I'd suggest heading to the #dm-discussion channel for help on DMing. Don't want the mods to get upset, lol
Thanks!
I got a quick question. Which books should I buy as a new player besides the player’s handbook?
Tasha's and Xanathar's if you're a player, the DMG and MM if you're a DM.
My first fight was on a forest path with some animated shrubs. Basicly angry bushes
My first fight was actually a big bull demon. I joined like halfway into that campaign, though.
can you have pets in dnd?
you can both as a feature or just as flavor but it might be a thing to discuss with your dm
i see
The Urchin Background has a pet rat, you can play the ranger Beastmaster to have "pets" and find familliar (Wizard spell i think) gives you a spirit animal pet
There's multiple methods but it's either
1: A class feature or spell (Beast Master and Drakewarden Ranger subclasses, Wildfire Druid subclass, the Find Familiar spell, any spell that summons a friendly creature)
2: the DM allows it (taming a random beast, a Gray Render (big clumsy gray "doglike" monster that just befriends itself to some intelligent person) comes up to one of you and bonds with you as Gray Renders do, those weird "can be a familiar even without the find familiar spell but it's a slightly more powerful benefit but also they can just choose to leave" familiar variants for certain lil creatures)
I'm a little older and have been fascinated by dnd my entire life but have never looked into it due to not having many friends and the few I have/had see dnd as a kind of joke so I'm very saddened to say I'm overwhelmed with all of this new information. I've created, what I think to be, an interesting character.
Why not pop over to the #character-discussion channel and share what you've got?
Hello everyone! I am new to dnd! i tried to get a group of friends together to play and got like 2 sessions in before we had to disband. I tried munltiple times tog et a group together but peoples lives around me get in the way and i really really want to get into playing dnd. Please reach out if you need a newbie player that knows the basics of dnd but has never played that has open availablility and make sure i can make it every session. looking for something that weekly just so we can play more

Tf else is there to it tbh
Idk😔
Anyone know any good ways to find an in-person DND group "in my area"?
@misty veldt Some places to check
- local gaming stores
- library
- community centers
- places of worship
Many will have notice boards where people can post activities they're offering in that space. You might find someone running D&D, or can advertise that you're looking to put together a group
There's also the Wizards of the Coast store & event locator
Just search dm tips on this server, and you'll find plenty of advice!
Alr thanks
Thanks for that advice. I will get to that after work.
Head on over to #dm-discussion for advice.
so this is a question I have after playing bg3 but the question is actually on how this works in normal dnd 5e because the game I seems to run differently and I have played dnd before but still am very under educated in things but...... does having a high level spellcaster like a sorcerer or bard and then dipping one level into wizard actually give access to learning scrolls/spell books and leave them usable for any spellcaster spell slot you have and the ability to cast them? this sounds wrong but again I lack a lot of information and the things I see online seem a bit conflicting tbh
idk where to ask this one X/
prepping for a dnd session and planning for things
This is more a question for #dnd-rules , but the short answer is no: you can only copy spells into your spell book that you could cast using just your wizard levels.
okay that is what I thought, thank you and sorry for that X/
because your wizard spellbook is seperate from other spellcasting spell pools
So a 10 Sorcerer / 1 Wizard wouldn't be able to copy a 2nd level Spell like Misty Step
thanks X/
I see Colossus typing and I'm suddenly terrified that I'm wrong haha
Just providing sources. You are right
The rules for Spellbooks from the wizard class:
Copying a Spell into the Book. When you find a wizard spell of 1st level or higher, you can add it to your spellbook if it is of a spell level you can prepare and if you can spare the time to decipher and copy it.
The rules for preparing spells as a multiclass character:
Spells Known and Prepared. You determine what spells you know and can prepare for each class individually, as if you were a single-classed member of that class.
I get it, because I would be a level one wiz, I could not prepare it due to the second rule you listed so I could not learn it
Exactly
The other important rule change from BG3, when it comes to copying spells, is that wizards can ONLY copy wizard spells into their spellbook, even if they have levels in another class. A wizard-cleric cannot add Cure Wounds to their spellbook
that is actually interesting..... I can also see how bg3 may be bringing a lot of people to the scene and with them a lot of slightly incorrect or outright incorrect information on class rules and how some feats work etc. would character discussion be a good place to ask about some class related content tied to my thoughts as someone still lacking a lot of info or would rules be better?
#dnd-rules for specific rules interactions, #character-discussion or #optimization for specific build advice
People need to understand that BG3 is Larian's homebrew and doesn't represent the SRD version of 5E D&D.
I knew, that was the exact reason I came and asked tbh but yeah I can see this being a current issue. I tried to make that clear in the original comment X/
They changed a lot of things that I don't agree with and that's why I didn't back the game when it was in production.
I've been playing D&D CRPG since the old Gold Box series, which were more faithful to the 2E ruleset at the time than Larian's BG3 is to 5E.
(But as a game dev myself I understand why they made certain design changes...)
Most if not all of their changes either make the game more user friendly, or are requirements for being able to run the game as a video game. There are a lot of changes I like, a lot of changes I don't like, and a lot of changes that I think work for the game but shouldn't come to the TTRPG. The game is a great marketing tool for 5e, and has brought a lot of people into the game that wouldn't have otherwise tried it, but there is a lot of stuff you need to unlearn to be able to play the TTRPG
Is there a good place to find images for your characters? I know D&D beyond has some, but I was wondering if there were other good places?
Hero forge and take a screen shot, use a video game character generator ie Skyrim, wow, bg3, darksouls etc
yeah between Heroforge, image search and BG3, most character concepts should be covered
How do you create a character for D&D ?????
Even the portraits from BG1 and BG2.
Did you read the free Basic Rules yet?
um idk Someone sent me to a link for Dungeons & Dragons before the storm

@hushed forge being a archer that shoots mass ammounts of arrows then turns them into whales on there decent or
being a halfling/druid and being thrown by a player and turing into a swordfish or somethign
are either of those possible?
or like being an archer with a group of tiny druids that i can throw from a slingshot that turn into whales midair?
idk
again i have no clue how to play and im joining a campaign tommorow
it is theoretically possible i believe if someone with true polymorph holds their action
Generally speaking, its not possible to change things into other things mid flight. In D&D, actions need to be completed before the next action can occur.
dang
could i be thrown into the air? or like turn into a frog jump up and when at 0 momentum turn into a whale? or something
I basicaly wanna be a walking Kirby down B
not specifically a whale but i believe druids can wild shape?
you know what maybe try to read the rules first cause all the t hings youre explaining are kinda thigns you wouldnt do in the game
?new they’re right here!

dnd beyond basic rules
but being thrown then changing mid flight isnt an option?
No, not really. If you are playing strictly by the rules, falling occurs instantaneously. There is no such thing as "at 0 momentum." If you are thrown, or begin to fall, you hit the ground instantly. There is no moment within that falling where you can take another action or reaction
or could i get like a pet/ally halfling druid and throw them myself
can u transform arrows? bc i saw something years back where someone turned arrows into elephents
not into elephants but theres spells for lightnign arrows or arrows that shoot out thorns
The ability to turn inamimate objects into living animals is a 9th level spell, which means the earliest chance for that to be possible would be at level 17, and again, you can't do it while they are flying
The Polymorph spell only works on creatures and not objects.
Colossus mentioned the True Polymorph spell (which is a 9th level spell).
so should i make an character sheet before joining a game or after session 0 and make the character depending on the world dm would introduce us to
hmm ok idk lol i just wanna be living kurby down b
Learn the rules of the game first to know your limits. You won't start off OP at level 1.
The only way that would be possible is to play a character with the ability to fly, and then change into something large and heavy while flying in the air
fair
the rules dont really suport this very well but you could always ask your dm or somethign to make some slight changes and see how that works out
Its generally best practice to make your character after talking to your DM about their world and the campaign, so you know if there are any specific restrictions and how you can make this character fit in as a part of their world, but creating a character beforehand is fun, and can be a good way to familiarize yourself with at least some of the game's rules, so its not a bad idea to do this, as long as you know you may need to start over or make changes after talking to the DM
my dm said his world is moslty home-brew anyway
i mean he showed us the map already and its massive like over 500 poi's
he said hes been adding to it for 10 years
A world being homebrew and the rules of the game being homebrew are two very different things
This is correct, and even then: rules for falling on creatures and having them take damage is optional, and not all DMs run them. Not to mention you'd still be damaging yourself in the process, and you'd probably be better off with other forms of damage.
Is it possible? Maybe, but ask your DM. As others have suggested, give the rules a read, especially if your first game is tomorrow.
How do I overcome social anxiety while trying to rp
exposure and getting comfortable w your group is what helps me
Talk in third person.
PC: "My character, Bob, does this and he says this."
hello!!
would yall say Oath of the Ancients would be a good Paladin subclass to start with?
I want something that is good, which ik they have dope auras and healing spells w lay on hands and their channel oaths. Only part im worried about is if itll be hard to keep the tenants in a party
or does it only apply to me as an individual
like if my party kills a guy and I do nothing, does that break my oath?
oaths do not break so easily.. the struggle is more internal to the character. You don't want to police your groups actions, but expressing how it affects the character can be development for both sides.
That said, doing horrible things that are against your tenants may get your DM to give you some struggles with using your powers (not a true rule but a DM could make the flavor choice) or start you down the path of breaking oaths.
That's something to talk to your DM about. I know many DMs who treat Paladin oaths as a bunch of suggestions, rather than actual rules they can break
I see. That’s interesting, i thought it would be much more black and white than that
yeah thats what kinda worried me about it, dont want to break an oath but i also definitely dont want to tell my party what they should be doing either since im a noobie
or really in general. more of a group effort and not about just one person
Keep in mind this is not a video game; there is no script that triggers a button that flips your alignment or measures how well adhere to your hope
The oath is a role playing tool for you and your DM to use however to you see fit
fair point
Real people have to decide how closely to adhere to an oath, which means a conversation and mutual understanding
I like that, adds another layer to it
As a new player, folks often read all these descriptors in the boo and think about them from a hard gaming perspective, but there is no computer, no authority that is watching you play. Its you and a table having fun, thats all
I don't know what you're talking about, the ghost of Gygax has its eyes on every table
youre definitely right about reading the rules and thinking of them in too rigid of a fashion, im definitely guilty of that
but like you said, probably comes from experience w video games and being conditioned to look at a set of rules a certain way. Just gotta get in the creative mentality
Is that why I keep hearing ethereal screaming?
Its the 80’s satanic panic dying

I mean, I guess it could also depend on the Paladin's knowledge of the victim too?
Makes sense. Alot of the other people in here made me realize that its kinda gray when it comes to the oaths
Kinda goes off the interpretation of the oath and the situation I reckon
its your character. You decide where to take it, with assistance from your DM
Wizards of the coast isnt kicking down the door and scrubbing your character sheet to write “Oathbreaker” because an npc died
I would recommend watching some live streams for the game flow and inprov in role playing
plus, isn't Oathbreaker based on turning to another, darker god for power, depending on the DM?
There is no hard rule about what an Oathbreaker must be
That is one possible story beat
Yo I'm new to dnd and I wanted to learn about the game. I've already played bg3 quite a bit, so I have a general understanding, but it would be great if there's anyone willing to teach me. I would also like to play a campaign at some point, cause what better way to learn than to play.

Yo.
i want tk start a dnd group with my friends and was thinking of dming, any tips or pointers? ive played a bit in the past, but ive never gotten really far in a campaign bc both i was in disbanded before we finsihed. im usually a player but i think id rather be dm
Do it!
Start with a simple situation, a problem, the players are all in on it when you start. Give them an obstacle, then a complication, then a big fight. Pop over to #dm-discussion for more.
Sup hows it going!
This question gets asked pretty often, so if you search the server for dm tips you'll see lots of advice posted in this channel and in #dm-discussion.
How can I join a group to play?
Check #find-a-game
Uhh, how do you give your character lycanthrope?
You don't.
there are no official rules but perhaps this will help https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/973-embracing-your-wild-side-playing-as-a-lycanthrope
For Race, can I pick any race? Or are there certain races I can only pick?
Up to your DM.
Ask your DM what's allowed in their campaign setting.
Ah I thought I had to make a character before not after I join a game, thanks for that
You can practice making characters to understand the classes.
For the websites, Ik DndBeyond is required. Is Roll20 also required and if so are there any other websites/apps I need to use?
I’d recommend coming up with a few loose ideas for characters.
Then when you find a DM, you can work together to find the best fit for that campaign and add any final details.
Was thinking of creating a vampire tyrant.
It's definitely not required. It's really dependent on the group/table.
That's up to your DM on which platform they use.
Generally the DM will specify what virtual tabletop they prefer
I'd hold off on learning any until you know for sure which one you'll be using
No website is required. What tools your group uses is up to your group.
Vampires aren't typically allowed as playable races because they're too OP.
Thank you
dndbeyond is the most user friendly for players, but you need to own the content to use it
There's the dhampir race which is a pseudo-vampire race (this is up to the DM if they allow it since it's from the Ravenloft campaign setting).
Vampires are cursed with obsession and hatred, which makes them poor adventuring allies
Ah, I figured as much lol, hopefully there are games that wouldnt mind a newcomer.
plenty of those
I don't mind
Read the free Basic Rules on the standard playable races.
Don't assume you can be OP from the get go, especially as a new player.
I know, Original Sin humbled me there lol
original sin isn't dnd for starters
I know, but there are similarities from what I understand.
ehh, not really
Fair enough, I guess I was misguided, my bad.
it's more pathfindery than dnd with its AP system
It's a video game whereas combat in D&D tabletop could take half an hour to a couple hours.
I always imagined table top could take weeks, months even.
My current campaign has been going on for over 1.5 years and will probably take another 2.5 years.
I've had a fight last 2.5 (two hours) sessions — that's because a PC fired his gun at two sentries (and missed) and alerted the entire base of orcs...
Wow, now I am pretty interested and the total chaos that could happen in DnD lol, I look forward to it.
I cast counterpoint: Peasant Railgun
what point does this counter
Peasant Railgun is not possible
Is dm- dugnon master or is it direct message? As it seems both is used.
both
Thank you
You kinda have to parse it, in D&D communities I try to use PM for Private Message but it mostly depends on context
are you a non native english speaker?
beat me to that point. Also worth noting that it gets confusing with AM/PM... switch to military time?
I am native English speaker and I use the 24 hour clock.
send me a DM refers to direct message
DM me refers to direct message
I am a DM refers to being a dungeon master
The DM refers to the a dungeon master
yeah, you've a clear advantage there then
Ah I see, thank you. Trying to join a game, but as what was mentioned, it takes time I guess. I also see some games have interviews, which is interesting.
No if you were asking me
I think best answer is to scrap English because it is stupid.
i was asking the one asking about "dm"
We’re getting far off the purpose of this channel
Oh my bad, I couldn’t tell because it came after my message
Oh you’re right. Jokes are illegal.
Was that a joke?
Yes obviously, we can’t just scrap the English language, that’s what makes it funny, it’s something that would be optimal but we can’t do it.
