I dont know but my character is premade its a high elf wizard class
That's a good combo! Any questions about it ask away.
I want to play with someone but how will they know about my character?
You send them a link to your D&DBeyond sheet! They can see all your stuff on there.
How
How do you send the link? There's a Manage button, which also gives you a link to Share it.
Again I personally don'r use D&DBeyond so I wouldn't know,
Error.
I'm looking now that's the wrong link.
I think you have to make it public?
There's a manage button beside your character's name, I think it's there.
Yep.
That’s the right link but you don’t have the character set to public visibility.
I cant see the public button
It’s at the bottom of your character settings.
I set it to public guys
The link works now.
What do you think about my character?
I don't know why my character is a woman its supposed to be a man
We have #character-discussion for more detailed feedback, but looks good at a glance. Not sure why you have exhaustion or your spells already used up, though.
who here has an open spot for a newcomer to dnd for there campaing im free 1pm European time
Reply to the postings in #looking-for-players.
Me new i would like to play
Its a premade character, you said
Yes
So it is what it is
Aww
You dont like it you can make your own character. Its a game, its supposed to be fun. Dont do something if its not fun
what is Burnt Othur Fumes?
i get it is a poison but like is it just smoke? What is othur?
The item describes what it does:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/equipment/burnt-othur-fumes-inhaled
i understand what is dose but what is it
They are either powders or Gases
i understand that but which one is it
ok so is it just ash or smoke from a fire?
Not really sure, it’s supposed to be either one I’m pretty sure
im just gonna consider it as when a player inhaled smoke or ash rules
The important part is that it's an inhaled poison, which has specific rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/running-the-game#Poisons
The form in which it's inhaled doesn't really matter as far as the rules go.
So gas or powder isn't really a critical distinction.
Any spells that can preserve and store corpses in smaller objects (making a corpse compress into a piece of jewelry or charm or stick etc)?
You could theoretically stuff a corpse of a small creature into a bag of holding. May need to cast Reduce on the corpse to shrink it to fit. The spell Gentle Repose keeps a corpse preserved for up to 10 days.
Ok cool Ty
As mentioned, you would need to use Gentle Repose to actually preserve the body, but for transportation/storage, Leomund's Secret Chest would also be a viable option, if you could fit the body into a storage chest
Ok Ty
helloo
Welcome!
That's not really a newcomer question. Maybe try #dnd-discussion?
ok ty
I can't seem to find any European games that would fit me, all American timezones which aren't good

I’m fairly new. Only recently been getting into the Tabletop games. DnD/Star Wars/Crusader Kings…
So definitely just reading up on content & what not
I see well, may I ask what you used to be when you found out about DND?
Just your typical Gamer. Video games. Have always been into books. General geek culture and what not. I’m a Star Wars buff. And absolute fan of RPGs
Well I'm a big gamer myself
Last time i played in a campaign with some friends in high school,I was a dragon Born
Cool! You into Star Wars at all? Yeah grew up playing video games. Have expanded my gaming to both tabletops & various platforms.
Well,i never saw star wars before tbh
Hmmm. I’m surprised. But yeah def my thing! Tho I’m a sucker for as previously stated all of geek culture
Tech/games/books/music/movies/shows/etc
Well maybe we might have some games in common

I had a map I created for my first time dming and was looking too find someone too check over it for me and maybe give some pointers with stuff?
@tacit elk have a look at the links in the above bot post, specifically the basic rules
Start by reading the first few chapters on character creation
Ok thank you
#dm-world-building could help you with that
ty!
I'm still confused
What Should've I bought
The essentials kit
Or
The starter kit
Either one!
Ok
Hello,I was wondering if anyone could tell me a good race for just starting out?
Hi there, I am new here. I mostly have been hovering and reading a lot thank you for letting me be a part I am learning a ton!
There's really no bad choice. Pick what sounds fun/interesting to you!
Could a player switch from being the player to the dm whenever the dm is busy or would that be wrong
Like in the same session? Or are you talking about intentionally rotating DM duties?
Like one week the dm can’t make it so one of the players becomes dm instead
That could work, but it'd need some significant communication with the DM, which could give the player metaknowledge about what to expect. That can spoil some of the fun for both player and DM.
There's also the matter of what happens to the PC the player normally controls. Basically, it could be done, but I see plenty of reasons why that wouldn't fly at many tables.
Dream sequence one shots with guest dm is legit
Still get a game in but without the long term effects
Alright Ive got a question that might sound absolutely stupid, but Ive had such extreme bad luck and its taking some of the fun out of dnd for me. Its my first time as a player as I usually am the DM, and we have played a 2, 5 hour sessions, and through out both of them almost none of my spells have worked or hit. Im a cleric so a lot of my spells are wisdom saves or attack rolls. But my DM has had amazing luck while I have had awful luck. As stupid as this all sounds it has been taking out some of the fun, I know that failure is part of the fun, but when every time I try to do something cool or anything at all, I make a stupid fail and it is honestly starting to mess with my character. For now I'm just lost for what to do and I am hoping it will go away, but if it doesn't I dont know what I will do.
This doesnt seem like a newcomber question, you know how to play and just got a run of dice rolls?
Going to the simplest solution…what is your wisdom score
Hey hey, im kinda new to the whole game. I have played a few mock games but nothing to a large amount and i wanted to see if i could try to learn a bit more/play a bit more games that what i had before?
Never played would love to
Anyone have any good reference to a thorough understanding of DnD dice & what not
What part are you struggling to understand
I’ve got a thorough understanding of the overall concept just the actual step by step dice use I’m tryin to get familiar with(only reason I haven’t played yet)I currently have Adventure Begins & Mines of Phandelver
Well the rules will tell you when to roll dice
Ok. Will just have to deep dive into a good read. Not that I don’t understand just haven’t given dice specifically a lot of look as of now!
Been looking at lore etc
Dice are described here in the Basic Rules introduction:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/introduction#GameDice
The d20 is used most commonly, for ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws — basically any time your character attempts to do something.
But that’s the only one with like a general purpose.
The rest are generally used for damage, but you basically just roll what it says to when it says to.
This interactive demo might clear things up for you, too.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
Can you move before and after an action / an attack?
Either. You can break your action before, inbetween, and/or after your attack(s).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#BreakingUpYourMove
If you take an action that includes more than one weapon attack, you can break up your movement even further by moving between those attacks. For example, a fighter who can make two attacks with the Extra Attack feature and who has a speed of 25 feet could move 10 feet, make an attack, move 15 feet, and then attack again.
Can anyone help me make a character
Have you read the basic rules on character creation
I just need help with the races
The rulebook is kinda hard to understand
I was thinking about being a mountain dwarf
Sure
@fleet field What next?
Idk
Where are you making the character sheet
I'm writing it on the character sheet that comes with the essentials kit
I would recommend using dnd beyond’s step by step character builder
Yeah there’s an app for it
Ok thx 😁😁😁
If I have a feat that allows me to use a different stat for damage and attack rolls (i.e: Use DEX instead of STR for my unarmed strike) do I add the my dex modifier for the ATK bonus or do I still use the STR one
You use your Dex modifier for the bonus to both rolls
oh so for example if I have a +4 DEX Modifier, +1 STR modifier, and +2 proficiency bonus, instead of getting +3 on my unarmed strike I get a +6?
Yea
Alright thank you!
My DND character is carrying 122 lb
Carrying weight isnt real anwyays
Is tabletop simulator on steam good for dnd?
Hi, I'm new.
Probably never tried it
Good morning
Welcome DJZ!
That handbookers playlist on youtube I got l8nked yesterday is soo handy!
It would probably work but there’s dedicated dnd virtual table top websites like roll20 and owlbear.rodeo that would work better
Okay thanks 👍
i have made a acount in D&D beyond what now
anybody i can talk to about dnd? im new and im not understanding the point of dnd
D&D
same
I have played one campaign with some friends where we were given premade characters, and I'm interested in making a custom character for the next one.
How would I go about making a 'kinetic master'. A buff spellcaster that throws things with magic and muscle.
What are my viable class options and combinations?
Any class that can use catapult spell and have a look at the telekinetic feat
What’s your idea
Thorn, the Pacifist Barbarian:
Any more details?
yea
A gentle and nature-loving barbarian who abhors violence. They tap into their rage not to cause harm, but to protect their friends and the environment.
what u think?
Ok you could do that but a barbarian rage means you have to attack on your turn or take damage or the rage ends, there is ancestral barb which has some defensive stuff
Have you got the free basic rules?
Have a good read of all the classes and see if any fit the idea better than a barbarian, a pacifist is hard to do as you will have to attack some enemies at some point
i also need help learning the game 🥲
is there any platform to play the game but text based ?
You want to look for play by post games if you search that term here you may find some games in #looking-for-players
ty
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view a good guide to finding games both here and in other places
Have you read the pins in this channel for links to free basic rules and video guides?
Those are really cool! Is there anything else physics-based you could recommend looking at? Such as Reduce, or maybe Fly on a Charmed creature forcing it high into the air?
Enlarge reduce let’s you shrink or grow people and levitate let’s you stick people in the air
Charming a creature isn’t mind control btw
It just makes it friendly to you
Dominate monster/person is mind control however
So does a charmed creature honouring a reasonable request not count as a 'willing creature'?
I wouldn’t call “fly straight up” a reasonable request
"Fetch something in the rafters please"?
Think of it like a charmed person becoming a friendly acquaintance
They aren’t gonna go out of the way to do something for you
Ahh, gotcha
But they aren’t gonna attack you
There is a spell you might want to look into called suggestion
im a little confused about how ability scores work is there any1 that can help me?
Whats the confusion? you have read the rules?
What's with the 1 in your sentence?
What's a good ability score? For dice rolls
No way I just rolled a 18, 17, 17, 16, 15, 15
Well done, was the physical dice or app

Good afternoon, what would be the most suitable command in the find-a-game channel as a single player looking for a game to join?
/ Looking for Dm
Or look through the ads in #looking-for-players and respond in the thread under the ad
Thank you
Hi there, anyone know the easiest place to find a DM or a game? I'm with two or three players and having a hard time seeing a game with enough slots for all of us
On this server you can check the #looking-for-players - that's DMs looking for players.
There's also #looking-for-community which is other Discord servers that have D&D games.
And finally you can create a post in #750812887697588356 to advertise you're looking for a game.
Please read #find-a-game carefully as it has instructions on how to use these channels.
How much time do i need to unattune from a magic item ?
I know attuning takes a 1 hour ritual but i dont know about unattuning
"In most cases, ending attunement in 5e simply requires a short rest with the character focused on dropping their bond with a magic item. This is the easiest way to drop attunement, but spending 24 hours at least 100 feet away from the item, dying, or having another creature attune to an item also end a character’s attunement to an object." idk much about it but i found a useful bit of information that may be of assistance
You can find those rules here, btw: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/magic-items#Attunement
I have never played only created a character
You can post in #750812887697588356 to search for a game that suits you, plenty of dms welcome new players and love to help them get started
K
Would bard be a good class to begin with?
It’s a fun class go for it
Thank you! Binard the half elf Bard has now arisen
Cool name
He resembles me in a way because he only has one hand, he lost his left one in a bar fight (my left hand is paralysed due to an incident during surgery years ago lol)
But thankfully he can still pound his drum to his heart content
how does stealth work in dnd?
You roll a Stealth check vs the enemies' (Passive) Perception check
Try not to roll a whole bunch of checks after the first one either.
Only roll again if the situation changes, like an alarm is raised or a shift changes.
ok, so I roll a Stealth check vs the enemies' (Passive) Perception check, if i success then im sneaking past or up to them, if i snuck past, do i need to make another check after it or am i in the clear?
Did the situation change?
i dont really know
I would argue no
Like you shouldn't have to keep constantly rolling if you already succeeded
its one guard, i snuck past them. does that count as situation change?
Probably not
You don't know if you are successful or not, only the DM knows since the DM knows the enemies Passive Perception. The DM will tell you based on what the enemies do.
i see
Oh are you a dm or player
I'm giving dm advice, it's not technically raw and you should refer to your dm
Oh
No you run the game so what you think should just go
If you want DMing advice then go to #dm-discussion
If you want RAW, then go to #dnd-rules
Well we're just talking stealth
no i was just curios about stealth
since stealth imo is more logical then head on battle as a solo person
cuz in most cases im outnumbered
Just talk with your players tbh, but what I said is my opinion and what old man said is the rule
As a new player all you need to know is that the basic rule is the character makes a stealth check and against the perception of the enemies and you as a player won't know the results until the DM explains them or it becomes clear that you've been discovered.
Perhaps don't sneak away from your party...?
its a one man party
Why?
cuz its just me
D&D is a collaborative game typically for a group of 3 to 5 players (optimally) to balance out with different classes.
Solo play is doable but... /shrug
i know, i played with 2 parties, both got discontinued after session 2
so i'd rather play solo till i find a new group
Good luck!
Slowly looking for a group
thx
also seeing how everyone gets 1 day worth of ration when making a new character, does that mean hunger and thirst are also tracked?
There are rules for it, but the extent to which those rules are used will vary.
what are the rules?
Some DMs might track it rigorously, and some not at all.
I personally only bother if there’s a narrative reason. In the desert, for example, water could become more of a commodity.
well i would like a more hardcore experience so
also
do yall keep track of time? is so, how?
Would anyone know the best place to find a fun lore-filled roleplay-y group to play with? Was super into DND World server until I went over their rules once more and realized that it erred heavily on the very family friendly side of things (which is a completely fine thing to do just not my taste)
If it's important to the story/session/game, you just keep track of it. There are some official adventure modules where the players have x number of turns before critically bad stuff happens so theres a bit of a time element to the adventure.
Check #looking-for-players, #looking-for-community, and even #paid-looking-for-game - and see #find-a-game ffor information on how to use our #looking-for channels.
Each group will be different though on the spectrum of game styles
This may be a stupid question but How do I edit the looking for dm thingy like put my own info?
Have you posted it yet?
After you post, the bot creates a thread under the post. Use the thread to make any clarifications or handle communication.
Are paid games like literally games you pay in for? Are there usually significant bonuses to this like very hands-on gms? Just never heard of these.
Thank you I’ll try that now lol
Yes - the group pays the DM to host a D&D game for them. Usually paid every session. There is some pros and cons to this - obviously it costs money but a money payment does wonders on folks committment to the game. But money transactions can also take away from the feel of "friends playing a game together" too.
Completely understand, interesting way to work. I assume this would cure easily the biggest issue with games which is a lack of interest or simply failing to attend sessions. Thanks for all the help (and I ADORE your pfp
)
Thanks! (I'm a big fan of the Dungeons of Drakkenheim third-party adventure)
What is that?
Hey I’m new to DND/TTRPG but don’t understand anything about it like I’m trying to play the Avatar TTRPG based on the lore with DND but I’ve never understand how to play it or understand the normal basics
So third-party publisher Ghostfire Games worked with the Dungeon Dudes to bring their Dungeons of Drakkenheim homebrew campaign out as an adventure for D&D 5e. You can learn more here: https://ghostfiregaming.com/dungeons-of-drakkenheim
can anyone help me im new to dnd and i have a group we are all news we were going to do an test run
of the game but
one of our groups chars has 4 hp
i think i messed something up
can anyone look at the char sheet?
its an tortle monk with hermit backgrond has 11 cons and 1d4 hit dice

was there an modifier im forgetting
No character should start with hit points so yes, something is wrong
The monk has a d8 Hit Dice (HD). At level 1, all characters have maximum hp based on their HD. A level 1 monk would have at least 8 hp (plus their Con modifier).
Id start at the beginning from scratch together
We loooooove homebrew
Totally checking this out
It's a learning experience - don't beat yourself up over it
I've been playing this game for years and I still mess things up
A class' Hit Dice is under the class features:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#ClassFeatures6
The avatar game appears to be its own new system. This server is for discussion about Dungeons and Dragons
You can #non-dnd-topics but you will probably have better luck in a community dedicated to that game
I've been playing for over 40 years and I still mess up. Don't worry about it. The rule books are there to be referenced.
thanks yall :D
im ChiknQueen btw my current name is kind of a joke.... dont question it
I mean you may be close to running a foul of server rules so think about whether your joke is for everyone
Please remember that this server is for everyone and folks should make sure that what they say and post is appropriate for an all-ages server.
👍
one of them jokingly said im strating to think you are trans all of your profiles and stuff are cute things so "i maned up" my profile
real
Eh let's be careful there
It doesn’t matter what the origin of the joke is
Be respectful of all who may come here
Do what?
hey again, im trying to make my own scenario but im not sure how to properly balance monsters so they arent too strong/weak. Any advice on that?
I'd recommend heading over to #dm-discussion and asking other DMs how they balance encounters!
sure
i am now^^
Starting my first ever character tonight (high elf rogue) any tips or pointers for things that first timers usually don't get right? I am just trying to be prepared as I am joining a group already in progress.
- Have fun.
- Don't hog the spotlight (you are not the Main Character).
- Try to decide what to do next when it's not your turn during combat.
- You don't need to do voice/accents when you roleplay your character.
- Know your character's class abilities, features, skills, and spells.
Don’t be to nervous about messing up. Even if you do people are usually there to help you or just explain something if need be.
Main thing about playing a rogue is learn the Sneak Attack rules: because you do not need to be sneaking! The number of times I've had to answer a question about whether or not it applies in one of my games...
awesome, thanks for the tips! I appreciate it a ton!
Hello! I'm a beginner in DMing and dnd in general, as is the majority of my group. I had a few of my players write in their bakstory they have been given/found magical item (enchanted flute, burning sword, etc...) Right now, we are playing the story of the "essential kit", so I told them I'll ask about it, but refused them to have those items to not throw out balance. However, when playing an adventure, can a PC start with any magical item? Or what can I do to integrate magical items in the backstory of the PC? Thanks for any help, and sorry if the question is dumb/ often asked.
(same here.) I would like to learn all the little tricks in the DM book to create an thrilling adventure.
Did you look this up on youtube? I'm creating a quest for my PC right now, and lots of video are really easy to understand and guide you on how to make a good adventure/ quest.
Hey
as far as doing it "by the book" its not suggested unless you're starting at higher levels (I want to say at least lvl 5 but its been a hot minute)
really, it depends on what you can handle, but to put it frankly, the system the game uses to rate magic item power sucks, so you basically just have to learn it by feel or try googling if a particular item is problematic
I actually just joined the server and also am playing the same campaign and am a beginner.
The party is the main character, not you. Be aware of how much air you’re taking up at the table. Give others a chance to shine. Also, talk with your players about the intended vibe—don’t make a joke character or an uncooperative edgelord people will be frustrated by unless they consent to that kind of thing going in.
how tf do i join a dnd game?
You can reply to the posts in #looking-for-players or make an ad yourself for #750812887697588356. The instructions for that are in #find-a-game.
So each post has an attached thread. You should be able to write in there; no one has access to write in the channel generally. If you’re trying to make an ad yourself, look at #find-a-game. Read that carefully.
For further information on how our #looking-for channels work please do read (carefully) #find-a-game.
if a spell says that the target has to roll a save roll but doesnt say how much does it mean its 10?
All spells that require a saving throw use your spell save DC unless they state otherwise
sacred flame for example just says to roll a dexterity saving throw
but doesnt specify how much i need
It's the spellcaster's spell DC.
Yes, as I said it’s the casters spell save DC
what is casters spell save dc
Have you read the Basic Rules yet?
It states how to calculate it in the spellcasting feature for the class
It’s 8+proficiency bonus+casting ability modifier iirc
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#SavingThrows
Many spells specify that a target can make a saving throw to avoid some or all of a spell's effects. The spell specifies the ability that the target uses for the save and what happens on a success or failure.
The DC to resist one of your spells equals 8 + your spellcasting ability modifier + your proficiency bonus + any special modifiers.
so for cleric its 8+wisdom(3)+proficiency(2)?
"Recharge 5–6" on a stat block means turns to recharge certain attack?
it means that your roll a d6 at the start of that creatures turn. the ability recharges on a 5 or 6
oh ok thanks
Anyone interested in DnD chat or needs any feedback helpful criticism feel free to DM me
Same here!! I love talking to newbies 🌸
💀 i thought that meant how many times they were able to do that attack
i've been using that stuff like a spellslot lmfao
damn, thats a massive buff to some monsters lol
yeah i literally didn't know that
charges were never really explained to me
though if it was like a dragon, it'd have to wait 2 turns before being able to do the breath attack again
since in my mind, that felt fair
You can find that explained in the rules here, btw:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/monsters#LimitedUsage
and even then, i usually hold off on using the monsters strongest attack till i've let the party think they got it, then showing them it do indeed go down
i enjoy playing the hidden cards when the players least expect it alot
Can people actually play dnd through discord cuz idk if you have to be there irl but i have heard about some ppl play with video call
👋 hello
I’m new to dnd and wanted to know if it’s a good idea to make a homebrew campaign or just use pre made assets
Yep, lots of folks play strictly online. This article gives a good overview of the logistics: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
You can certainly start out with homebrew, but I personally think it’s much easier to use pre-written material first, to get a feel for how things are presented and structured.
Ok thanks 😊
Don’t feel like you have to take anyone’s advice, though. People have very different approaches to the hobby, and they’re all valid.
I know it’s just I felt like I needed someone else’s opinion.
So I got ADHD and It can be hard for me to focus, me and some friends are going to do a DnD game for me it'll be my first time
any tips for keeping focused?

Try not to move? Idk honestly!
Are you a DM & Player?
Just a player
Cool! How long u been?
Just starting DnD though I've wanted to always try it for years
Thinking I am going to be an Elf Druid, since I really like that combination and it's the same as my Baldurs Gate 3 so I am a bit familiar with it
Yeah I did! Not so much anymore due to mental health, but I did for awhile!
Oh! Well I was ganna suggest checking out Kick!
as someone with pretty bad adhd ive never had too much problems playing dnd
Just concentrate!? Oh wait that’s not it!😂🤣
but just in case ive always made sure to make a 15 intermission when i dm
maybe ask ur friends if they would do the same
That might be smart I'll ask him and see if he's cool with it i dont see why he wouldn't
usaualy standing eating and walking around for a bit can kinda reset my adhd
i feel like adhd is wierd tho. differnt things work for differnt people.
I fortunately don’t suffer from ADHD so am quite useless on helpful advice! But seems like DnDing is doable
Do u not play anymore R4?
im dming a session soon that im pretty nervous about
as another person with adhd i find dnd keeps me focused just bc my brain has something to do, your mileage may vary tho. Try to have something to fidget with, and ask your dm for a break when needed
Oh cool! Good to see you still DnDing
just dont wander off, clearly communicate when you need a break
i feel like my adhd isnt as bad if im doing something i enjoy.
yeah same
or doing things that i have a choice to do.
like dnd goes smooth
but a clasroom is hell
Classrooms are/were Hell for even us Non-ADHD people. Especially Buses!!!
public busses are always wierd
does anyone have anytips to help me roleplay? the last time i played dnd was 3 years ago (i was 13). i am dmding a session soon and just dont know my capabiltys yk.
as i get closer to game time im a bit nervous
For roleplaying npcs just make sure you know their basic personality
obv i stil remember how i used to take notes when i dmed. im just nervous to actually open my mouth.
ykwim
Yeah
Hey everyone I just got the dragons of storm wrench isle starter set and was wondering if anyone else has it and is open to playing? I’ve never played before but have been wanting to learn for a while now. I currently have 1 more ready to go we can start meeting this week via online
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
how does one go about starting to play dnd online?
been looking for text based games for a while
Have you been looking for pbp (play by post) games? That’s what most text based dnd games call themself
yeah any idea where i can find them
im new and wanna slowly work my way into like a live session
Live in person is the best way to learn
ive only played once in live and it was fun
but i feel a text based one would help me settle in and get used to the mechanics so when i do play a live one again im more knowlegeable. plus itll suit my current work schedule and life
Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, Reddit’s r/pbp, and D&D Beyond’s forums all accommodate play-by-post.
Has anyone played D100 dungeons? I’m trying to get into it and have some questions
D100 dungeons?
It sounds like a different system in which case not the server for it
Alright, I’ve been trying to find where to talk about it, my apologies
Can a dm also play while dming
That’s called a DMPC and it’s not recommended
Only really works with a game with just 1 player 1 Dm
Even then a dmpc isn’t a good idea
D&D is not a system good for playing and DMing. There are many issues that arise from it.
Imo it can for sure be done if the Dm knows what they are doing
I've learned about character making
Can anyone help me with how to play the game
Cuz the dm knows spoilers?
Watch videos, that always helps me. Then, skim the rules and join a beginner-friendly campaign.
Or, if you want less commitment, a one-shot would be good too.
They can compartmentalize what the Dm knows and what the character knows. Again if they know what they are doing
The DM is god. They setup and tell the story, they prepare maps, they create and play every NPC, they control every enemy
That's one reason. Another is spotlight hogging. Also, DMs who might change story beats or fudge rolls or the spot (a controversial issue on its own) might be more tempted to favor themselves or a story path that they particularly would find interesting.
Bottom line the dm has knowledge and control that players do not, and its very diffcult to occupy both sides of that line
I personally could never have fun doing both. I would be too busy DMing and focusing on that to play my character. They'd be a bystander, not a three dimensional character.
What if the dm plays like they don’t know anything and they let other people lead
Not for everyone
Thats not how the game works
Then why play? In my opinion, that sounds boring. If you would enjoy it, and your players are fine with it, go for it. But I wouldn't enjoy playing a character who can't engage in the story very well and is just an extra thing for me to do during combat.
The DM controls time and space, you cant just…delegate that , then its just a handful of people wandering around aimlessly on a blank canvas with no actual world
i understand you are new but it seems like you havent quite grasped how the game flows
I strongly suggest watching some live plays
Get a feel for it
Any good reccomendations? I havent found much on YouTube
I think they were saying that their character would play like not knowing anything. They'd still DM like normal.
For what?
Watching people play in a campaign over time I guess
Which we’ve repeatedly said is a bad idea for reasons we explained
D&D Beginners stuff. Is there a recommendation on the new command thingy?
Dimension 20’s Fantasy high has a digestible length and it is their first campaign so they make plenry of mistakes
But its still brennan lee mulligan so it still is highly entertaining and captures the feel of a table well enough
Just dont get spoiled by the professional battle sets
They are built by rick perry
Got it thanks!
Looks like I missed an interesting discussion
Hi! Im running my first adventure, dosi, and about to do seagrow caves. I only have 2p, it feels like my lvl 1s are going to have a bad day w this 51hp, id8+3 octopus.
Am i misunderstanding something here? I guess it's been written for a 5p party or something?
What’s the octopus’ challenge rating?
It sounds fine
It’ll be tough but hopefully doable
You can always tweak it if you want
That’s fine then
They’ll have good damage output and the Druid can tank in wildshape
You can always quickly drop it’s remaining hp mid combat if they’re close to death
At level 1?
Or fudge attack/damage rolls
It should be fine
Ok thanks
Hiya, I have a few questions!
I’ve been interested in dnd for so long, but never had the opportunity to play with anyone. How difficult is it to start out with little knowledge of rules and such? Also another question, is it weird if I make a player character that’s mainly based off of me? I don’t wanna be cringy or anything, but roleplaying as an extension of myself is something I hope to do. Another question again, it’s probably a silly one but how do I find a campaign to join? Is it possible to join a campaign with a few other newcomers? Thanks for y’all’s time! Sorry to bother

Do you recommend building a custom character for my first dnd game?
That’s like imo a good bit of the fun of games like DnD honestly
I have never played D&D before. What is my best course of action?

sure, but how can I join a campaign
did that. How long should I expect to wait?
There are waaaay more players than DMs so it may take you days, weeks, ore months.

Good luck and have fun
If someone attacks you with a sword do you make a constitution saving throw
No... there was probably another reason if that happened
When do you make saving throws? Is it not for attacks?
Some attacks or effects yes
But a sword is basic
Like I believe thunderwave is a con save off the top of my head
Usually the attack will say, otherwise it's dm discretion
Concentration, and anything else the dm/effect will tell you
Kinda feels like you should go back to the basic rules that talk about attacking and combat
Attacks are based on to hit rolls against AC
Ex:
An attack roll of 16 versus 18 AC would miss
But an attack roll of 18 on 18 ac would hit, causing damage
Hey I just made a character but I'm new to this crap so I'm gonna post my card here and make sure I got everything right
Misty step is a fun spell
i noticed from alot of videos, that besides map and character sheet, both players and DMs write alot of stuff down on paper, so do i need to have a notebook with me as well?
hii!!
damn
i also just made a character
it helps to maintain information. For a DM, this may be things like initiative rolls/order, actions taken by players and how that may factor into the storyline or alter it, important changes that may have otherwise not been accounted for but needs to for future developments in the story, etc. For players (and the DM's benefit), it's good to take notes to keep a log of events, records of what was found and where, logs of people the party ran into and what their significance might be, and other matters of value that could come up later. To what extent a DM may permit this can vary from table to table as some might prefer the party actually be able to remember important details rather than have a logbook of everything that has occurred while others may encourage it and treat it as a journal by one or more members of the party
so the players write a journal in character while the DM does it OoC? sounds simple
awesome
how long does it takes to find a dm and some players?
i want to play about now to get a grip
sometimes a few hours or days, sometimes months without any
damn
should i make my character in D&DB or on normal sheet? i can do both but since DNDB is limited without buying the books i think old school is better
i mean, if you want to i can DM for you in a beginner one shot
u would?
yeah
also just both of us?
something short but containing most aspects
yep
If you're a player searching, then aye, it can take time because:
- There are more players than there are DM's available. Thus for a player it's a competitive market to find a table; and,
- Finding a table does not necessarily mean finding the first empty seat. You might find a game but end up realizing it's not a good fit for you either because of problems at the table or that you simply don't have the right feel for the campaign or the table (nothing wrong with this, it's important to find the right table, not necessarily any table)
?
so how do we play?
well i have the one shot, im trying to figure out our way of playing
as a DM we would love it if you did
@idle lance is your character a normal sheet or is on D&DB?
send me the link in dm
no not really
hello im new to dnd seemed fun and me and my friend group want to try it
Welcome!
so im wondering where i can find out more about lore, classes races and so on
I would start by giving the free basic rules a skim: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Also check the pinned message here on this channel - lots of useful links and reosurces to help get you started!
thanks
I wouldn't worry too much about lore as lore is very dependent on game setting, the campaign being played, and even just how the Dungeon Master (DM) decides to handle it for their games.
seems fun that way as well

Anyone have any insight on what items to grab and builds to make outside of my story line for a Wood Elf Cleric? I’m currently building my character on dndb but am stuck on my characters load out essentially. There are so many options to take into account with weight! Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you
Great question for #character-discussion - folks there can help out with character builds and all that.
where can i find the list of monsters i can add to combat in avrea as a DM?
Or if you’re looking for just the Basic Rules monsters…
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters?filter-source=1
Ah, gotcha. 😅
Yeah, D&D Beyond has all the official monsters, and anything you can use there, you can use in Avrae.
nice
hows with fey in dnd
like are there any fey race in dnd
is that all?
You're talking about player races, right?
mhm
Yep, there aren't many
Just those four
Most races are humanoid
There are four fey, one construct, one monstrocity, and one ooze
so dryads and ragewalkers are monster races then?
Dryads are, don't know about ragewalker, that's not an official monster
i see thanks

are there any pages where i could learn more about fairys in dnd
Fairy’s? Didn’t even know they were a thing!
The fairy player race is in either Wild Beyond the Witchlight or Monsters of the Multiverse.
The can fly and they get a few spells.
Cool!
i googeled them since i couldnt find anything good about them and it sas newly added in wild beyon the witchlight
Yes, but they were reprinted in Monster of the Multiverse
so is it legit to play them?
They're an official race, if that's what you mean by legit
However, it's always best to ask your DM as to what options are allowed for their game
thanks ill do so
(It’s not uncommon for DMs to ban flying races in their games.)
cry
i need me fairy brother
This seems absurd!🤣! Though I imagine due to added mechanics/physics and what not?
I mean, plenty do still allow them, too.
itll be our first game so i imagine my dm wont ban them
The only way to know is to ask.
creating encounters and environments with flying in mind is extra work and puts some constraints on what you can do as DM, not everyone is okay with the extra work
As someone tryin get into DMing & be an active player. I can honestly say flying races are more than welcome
Yeah, one of my players has a fairy. It’s fine.
now that ive setteled on race, hows with classes i would love to play cleric but some sources say u also gotta chose supclass so its kinda confusing
subclasses are part of the game for every class. Its a sort of specialisation
for clerics, your subclass is called domain, ususally linked to your chosen deity
so you chose one as part of making your level 1 character
thanks
I understand this. Fun is not for everyone!😂🤣
It is not appropriate to suggest that someone doing something a different way from you means they're "not fun"
That's called gatekeeping and is a detriment to the hobby
Ok. I take it back!
what davyd said. For some, dealing with permanent flight isnt fun.
This channel is for discussing the basics. If people want to engage in civil discussion on the various challenges a DM may face when running the game, including designing for various styles of play, #dm-discussion would be much more suitable
Hey Everyone!
who here has an open spot for a newcomer to dnd for there campaing im free 1pm EET
@glad patrol That's not how finding a D&D campaign works
Firstly, we ask people use our game finding channels ( check out #find-a-game )
Secondly, you will generally have to find a group and then you all discuss availability
Im sorry how do i find them?
I don't mean to be intrusive or anything but i've always wanted to try and have a dnd session but I've never had people in my friend groups who had it, and all I wanted to ask is, for someone to explain to me the ropes and etiquet of how things go and guide me so I dont come off as annoying or slowing down a project or something! Thanks in advance!
Hiya! I'm a little new to the d&d community I was wondering what was the best class to start out with for people who like magic/archery or sneaky esc characters?
Ranger gets some magic at lvl 2
Rogue or ranger are good choices
Rogue and go arcane trickster at lvl 3 to get some spells

Hello guys, I played my first session last night, and the DM said my character has enough experience to get to level 2. Can someone help me out with what I change on my sheet? I’m a variant human cleric
The cleric description section as well as the section for your subclass will tell you what features are gained at each lv
Yup, just check what the chart says for level 2 cleric and get your hit points listed at the beginning of your class
You will gain hit points, spell slots, and spells known, plus features as described
Increase your hp (either roll a d8 + Con modifier or take the average (4) + Con modifier)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#Beyond1stLevel
At level 2 cleric you get Channel Divinity (1/day), the Divine Domain feature, and another prepared 1st level spell.

Are elf Rangers common? Isn't there beastmaster things?
This might sound very stupid, but I really want to get into D&D with a couple of friends (probably a group of 4), and I'm not sure where to begin. I'm willing to be the DM and read 600 pages of the handbooks. But I'm not sure I can get each my friends to read 300 pages of the Player's Handbook in a foreign language. How should we collectively learn D&D and should I read those two books myself before we start playing at all?
Any race can be any class, if thats you’re asking what is possible
Elves are popular in general
Beast master is a subclass of ranger
Are beast masters easy/fun?
What are some fun uncommon races to play around with?
You can all watch turorial videos such as Critical Role’s Handbooker helper
They give you a companion creature to control and theyre pretty good , ranger itself is good
Oo so question with the companion creature does it depend on the dm what kind it can be?
I'll check these out. And with this still, should I read the books myself before we begin? I'm not sure if I can be the DM, all of us are extremely new into D&D, but someone needs to do it.
New beast masters companion can look how ever you want it to look you get 3 different stat blocks for land sea and air
You should absolutely read the books
This
and the Monster Manual too?
the new version was printed in Tashas’s Cauldron of everything and is a massive improvement from the original handbook version
Monster manual is for the DM
which is going to be me for the first time we play
is it supposed to be read cover to cover?
Just read the parts of the adventure that the party can reasonably interact with that session
hmm alright
and I should for good measure, read the player's manual as a DM too, right?
uhhhhhhh land sea and air..?
Definitely. Probably moreso than the DMG!
damn that's a lot of reading
The DMG has a lot of stuff about campaign building and items you might give to players, but really the PHB is more vital for rules in my experience.
Honestly, I haven't actually fully read about half of the DMG, and it has no bearing on my ability to Dm.
Run lost mines all you need are the basic rules
The PHB is the only cover-to-cover book in my eyes.
Say you wanted a velociraptor you would use land, an octopus use sea, an eagle use air
Playsrs handbook more important than the monster manual
I have personally read both, i think the knowledge you learn in them can help as a DM, and although i am new to DND and havent played yet, due to lack of Players, i think picking up a copy of Lost Mine Of Phandelver could help understand somewhat of being a DM
I think I can only access the player's handbook, the dungeon master's guide and the monsters manual
is 20 pages a day a good goal?
to be played in a month
I Read It All Within 2ish? Hours
what how
how do you build a beast master character?
they're 300 pages each, no?
like one book, not all
definitely not, just PH, DMG took me a while
Start with the basic rules
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05OiKZgfz7hi_Gvw9hftY0LD good play list for some of the basics
You don't need to read any D&D source book cover to cover
but yes there both around 300 pages and ^
They're reference books, the intent is you look up what you need to know
some pages are charts too, so its helpful to be able to just jump back to read if any confusion occurs
There are key sections that are good to read, such as how to make a character, how ability scores work, or how combat works. But beyond that, the expectation is you look up the sections you need as you need them
hmm
also, random question, is there a Set Order of the Campaign Books?
so I should watch some videos, get into the books a bit and just start playing?
Do you have dndbeyond app
ive got Lost Mines And Icespire Peaks, and dont know if there are any that take place between them
For the vast majority no
There are some exceptions, mainly the follow up adventures to Dragon of Icespire Peak
oh ok! thank you! and noted!
i do yes
Build any ranger get to lvl 3 and pick beast master
There is beginner help txt options on the app to help you create characters
Start by reading the ranger class. Then the beast master subclass
And i guess i have to ask
Have you read the basic rules?
yes like basic rules on dnd?
Yes
yes i have
Then move to ranger and beast ranger sections
If you dont own Tashas you will need to get that book or purchase the subclass itself to use it on DDB
can i ask for help in my first campaign as a player?
Ask
ok
as a level 3 sorcerer, how can i, say, hypothetically, get from an outer plane to the material plane?
That's not a newcomer question and is really dependent on the setting and the DM's cosmology. Not something we can answer here, if at all.
i thought that
Hire a higher level arcane spell caster.
Tier 1 PCs usually deal with local threats. It's usually Tiers 3 and 4 that deal with planar threats.
Tiers of Play
Tier 1 — Levels 1 to 4: Local Heroes
Tier 2 — Levels 5 to 10: Heroes of the Realm
Tier 3 — Levels 11 two 17: Masters of the Realm
Tier 4 — Levels 17 to 20: Masters of the World
what happened
ah, yeah, how much gp is that gonna run me? as an estimate
Ask your DM.
Ask your DM as he’s the one that going to have to write adventures in different planes now
ok will do
Hey hey! Total DND noob here - I’m looking to get into the game a little, you know, test the waters and such before committing to buying dice sets etc.
Does this server have an lfg feature for newbies?
It does. See #find-a-game.
Not for newbies specifically, but you can use the Discord Search function to narrow it down by keyword.
Okay sweet, thanks for the snappy response!
Hello , I'm totally new to DnD , if i don't bother , i want someone to teach me , i know there is a player handbook and all but I'm too lazy to read it , i just want a fast , basic tutorial, if anyone have time for that please feel free to dm me🖤🌹
hey i need some help finding a group to play dnd
Maybe check out videos series like Handbooker Helper or WASD20's beginner's guide?
We have instructions for using the server's LFG section in #find-a-game.
I will try that , thx🖤🌹
i dont have any real and physical dice, so i wanted to know if there is any digital alternatives that i can use offline?
Google has a dice roller, and just searching for 'digital/dnd/rpg dice (roller)' gets you tons of results.
DnDBeyond's mobile app, and I'm sure other app stores sell dice rollers
offline is the keyword
thx, i'll use that
Yeah check your mobile device's app store for dice rollers
Just searching "download dice roller" also nets results, in case you want even more options.
alr, i got dndb app, my PHB, DMG, character sheet, notebook and pdfs. do i need anything else?
Are you a player or the DM?
im getting stuff for both
The only other things you may need if you're playing in person and are the DM would be a place to make a sketchy map (even loose leaf and pencils does the trick) and something like coins or candy to represent placement. Otherwise, you sound set.
Hi Newbie here.
Played D&D/AD&D casually with some friends back in the lat 80's and early 90's - so forgive me I've been 'out of the loop' for some some (and was never really 'in the loop' tbh)
We have started playing again - but online because it is not practical in person (we live in europe and Australia)
We started with the Phandalin module with of the guys DM'ing with roll20.
A couple of us find it hard to use and have heard the VTT is better but I'd really find out what are our options are to make it as simple as possible for our 2h30 sessions once a week? We have money but very little spare time.
Welcome to 5E from a fellow old AD&D player
thank you
Owlbear Rodeo is free and decently user-friendly. I prefer the old version, but I think it's simpler than Roll20.
If you have a budget then there's Roll20 (they have a free tier and subscription tier for additional features) or FoundryVTT (they have an one-time $50 license).
yeah I'm old. But I might have one more adventure in me.
I personally use Foundry because it has a lot of features, especially the community-made modules.
My groups use Discord for voice and Owlbear for maps/tokens.
I'll be honest I've not liked the UI for roll20 and foundryvtt seems like a job.
we use digital maps, but other than that, am i good to go?
I think so!
Check out Owlbear Rodeo, then. There's also this pretty extensive VTT guide to peruse.
Yes, Foundry is more complex but that's because it can do more things to make IMO more immersive for my players.
I really want to avoid this sort of thing :
MrPrimate's Muncher
Munch your content from D&D Beyond
• This feature can take a long time, please be patient and leave the browser tab open.
maybe later - I'm just trying to get started with something simple
owlbear.rodeo is free and simple
thanks I'll check that out.
Maybe not that.
That's an old school megadungeon crawl, a la Descent into Undermountain.
I dont want to be drawing rooms/dungeons
yeah it is about the right starting level
Might be worth moving this discussion to #third-party-tools-archive
Let's move over to #third-party to discuss about VTTs
I would be happy if I could do it all wizards ?
WotC is working on their own Unreal Engine 5-based VTT.
There's nothing wrong with 3rd party tools.
so there is no 1st party tools yet?
Just D&D Beyond but that's limited to character sheets and digital books.
I basically want to give wotc my cc and be able to start playing.
sigh
thank you @cobalt frigate I understand now.
WotC's upcoming VTT is 3D only so its UI/UX may not be great for everyone (especially if they have a lower hardware spec PC to run it)
I think I'll stick with what we are doing currently.
thanks @crude musk not interested in tools. Just want to play.
If you're playing online, you will need a VTT unless you are going to do 100% theatre of the mind or display via webcam of your maps.
Yes I get that now. it seems for the moment I'll stick with roll20 as the simplest/easiest for a newbie.
Theater of the mind (with some inspirational background images and character art) is perfectly valid
I'm so new to this I don't understand the jargon on the 'purchase adventure' page
Perhaps move this to #third-party-tools-archive
Yeah this is less a newcomer topic and more about tools - so please take further discussion to #third-party-tools-archive - thanks!
DnDBeyond is owned by Wizards of the Coast/D&D yes
You weren't specific to which online store you asking about.
If you're going to be using Roll20 to play Dungeon of the Mad Mage, I recommend you buy it on Roll20's Marketplace since it will include all of the maps done with collision and lighting.
You can use the maps purchased via DnDBeyond inside of Roll20 but you'll have to do any walls/lighting yourself if you go that route.
(I was about to write that!)
D&D Beyond is cheaper I find though (they have seasonal sales)
Virtual tabletops are tools
talking about dndb, what things are a must buy?
I apologise. I'm new here and I was just looking for the lowest effort way to get started.
Nothing really, you can get started with the (free) Basic Rules and the (free) Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure
also howcome artificer isnt in dndb?
part of tasha's cauldron of everything
It's not a class in the Basic Rules/SRD.
aw damn
You can buy it individually on D&D Beyond though.
yeah, but 30 dollars? thats a lot for me
No, individually
Purchase any of the four artificer subclasses ($1.99 each) and that will unlock you the base class too
I also wouldn't recommend artificer as a new-player friendly class generally. Not saying don't use it, but it's got some complexities to it.
Is there a rage for mages? I know barbarian uses rage which gives them buffs but you can't cast spells while raging. So i was wondering if there was something similar to rage but for spell casters. My idea was to have a hotheaded sorceror who can get very "angry" and kind of reckless "FIREBALL!" but i can't find anything that can work.
No - the rage mechanic actually prohibits concentration which is used in some spells. About the closest thing I can think of is sorcerer's metamagic to quicken a spell and so cast a quick cantrip as a bonus action along with a leveled spell as their regular action.
how come? seems like a simple class
ah ok that does make sense to be fair i was just hopeful that there would be a way to buff my damage under the precedant of being angry but yh i can just do that and rp the "rage" XD thx for the help
Make sure to read carefully about infusions. Our group had to pause a game for 30 minutes to discuss all the intracacies and what was allowed and not. It's not simple IMO.
so the only thing not simple is the limitations of what you can and cant invent?
No - the game mechanic rules of the Artificer features are not simple in my opinion. It's a fine class but it's not one I'd hand to new players because there's a lot of mechanics you have to wrap your head arround and there are limitations that might not be grasped/understood on the first read.
Therefore it's a more complex class and thus may be harder for new players to figure out.
ok, i looked into it and it seem far more complicated
i thought he was just soneome that could craft items and invent cool stuff
Well, yes...
but yesn't?
yo guys just finished my first campaign as a dm with my firends more correctly first session
we didint even complete the first page of the premade advanture in 3 hours lol
but it was fun
congrats! hope yall enjoyed it
yea it was fun
one of them jokingly rolled an 1d20 for breathing and that started chaos
everyone started to roll for anything but i went along with it with answers
everyone was having a blast
oh an also in the first fight of the campaign
our ranger shot our rogue
and fainted him....
ranger rolled nat 1 for attacking the goblin
and he dealt enough damage in turn to one shot the rogue
Is it fine to make a character that's based off of a character from another game or show
Sure but just remember that the mechanics from another game/show may not be 100% possible.
Yeah I figured
how do yall manage to organize your thoughts and ideas?
like i have soo many cool ideas for characters, locations, homebrew stuff and etc that it gets impossible for me to wrap my head around.
i've tried to write them down in a doc, but i just go all out for one thing then make the others really boring. what do i do??
I write it down and think about it further. I take a couple passes before I'm satisified. If I'm not, I'll revisit later with fresh eyes.
i see, but also another question
how do i make things that are balanced? cuz most of my homebrew is either too simple to use or way overpowered
40+ years of playing/DMing experience.
Which includes learning from my mistakes (which I still make).
#dm-discussion too if you want DM advice.
alr, thx for the help!
What does VTT mean I've seen people use it a lot in #looking-for-community not sure what it means
Virtual Tabletop (such as Roll20)
Ohhhh okay
alright, I'm confused on spell levels and slots for the Warlock... cause it says I know 4 spells, but I only have 2 slots, and then it says I unlocked the 2nd level spells
so what's going on?
Warlocks have much more limited spell slots than other casters. Additionally they cast their leveled spells always at the highest level available. But they do get to recover spell slots on a short rest.
You can know more spells than you have slots available.
i meant allocation
also, you just gave me the idea of a Scorn based dungeon/questline
and I will say this;
n o
Again you can know more spells than you have slots available to cast, but you'll have to select which of those spells you have prepared to cast.
...
right. it says that i have lvl2 slot unlocked
but then I am reading that I unlock the "Gust Of Wind" at level 3 by being a mark of the storm half elf
but then Gust of Wind is a 3rd level spell
and the warlock unlocked lvl2 spells at level 3
so wtf, man
Gust of Wind is a 2nd-level spell.
whats WotC and Roll20?
WotC = Wizards of the Coast
Roll20 is a virtual tabletop (VTT)
Wizards of the Coast is the company that makes D&D.
Oh Ok, I was reading previous convo, and seen them be mentioned a handful of times
Roll20 is a website: https://roll20.net/
okay
hai
well, at the very least, with the warlock unlocking the second level spells, should I allocate Gust of Wind/Levitate to the 2nd level, or
Your class level is a measure of your strength in that class. A spell level is a measure of the spell’s strength. There’s not a direct correlation between the two.
You have to be a 3rd-level warlock to learn 2nd-level spells.
she is
A paladin has to reach level 5 before they get 2nd-level spells.
alright. alright.
so. 2 cantrips of Gust and GFB
3 lvl 1 spells known (wrathful smite, feather fall, and fog cloud) with 2 slots
1 lvl 2 spell known (gust of wind) with one slow
is this how its supposed to work, or am I being subliterate again
Warlocks work a little differently from most spellcasters.
All their spell slots are always the same level.
So at level three, you have two 2nd-level spell slots (and no 1st-level slots).
oh
Though you can still use those to cast your 1st-level spells.
so it all gets pushed?
Some of them may even have additional effects because they’re being cast at a higher level.
:O I was looking around at DnD stuff I just found out, you can play this solo? I'm terribly nervous about playing in a group I don't know and I can't get friends together until October to play, I really want to do DND it's something I've kinda wanted to try for awhile, I might end up trying a solo game, it could also be good roleplay practice for me
To clarify, there aren’t any official rules for playing it solo. It’s definitely designed to be played as a group.
You can buy chose your own adventure books and stuff... that's the closest thing imo
But there are indeed third-party rules that adapt it for solo play.
The end result is something more like a Choose Your Own Adventure than your traditional D&D game.
Interesting
What does DnD 5e Westmarch mean? how is it different from normal dnd?
I don't think we have a command for it here - but a westmarch server is one where there is no set D&D group - there's a bunch of players and possibly several DMs and games are played as folks find time and are available to pull a group together and a DM is ready. Often the games happen in a shared world.
Hey new here and to dnd
welcome!
Tbh don't know where to start
feel this in my soul rn
There's some useful resources in the pinned message here in the channel including a link to the free, basic rules.
I'd suggest starting by skimming through that and learning how a character sheet works and how to build a character.
I thought about doing a rouge half elf
Oh damn, this might be a better option for me to do than a weekly sessions, Chronic pain sucks and makes scheduling stuff difficult
I know that much I just don't know how to get my sheet from the DBD site
You can export the sheet as a PDF? Or just keep using DnDBeyond to manage it.
Ok what from there after I made a character
That's what I'm confused on
I'm not very smart lol
So once you have a character you can find a group to play with - do note that you may need to adjust the character to fit the group and type of D&D game being played but most folks are fine taking on new-to-D&D players as long as the player shows a willingness to learn the rules (say by reading the free basic rules) and also connects well socially with the rest of the group.
Note you don't have to read everything or memoize the rules - but knowing how a character works is important.
the free basic rules are accessible in the links you were directed to earlier. that should be enough to get you started
for the full rules, grab the player's handbook anywhere you can get books: bookstores, geek shops, amazon, sometimes local libraries have the handbook for you to rent
What would I need to buy on DnD beyond to unlock duergar dwarfs and the path of a storm herald for barb?
you should be able to buy those individually
If I was to buy a book what should I buy? Starter Set? Essential Set or player handbook?
If you're intending to be a player, players handbook.
If you're getting a group together to try it out, get a starter set
Ohhh okay I'm intending to be just a player, cool so I'll get that then
Whats the best number of ppl u Can play with?
A DM plus 4-6 players is usually the sweet spot.
Hello! Me and two buddies of mine are completely new to the game and we're looking for a good way to play D&D online, is there a game of sorts or some websites that can make this possible?
There’s a good article here that covers some popular options for playing online.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
@fleet field where do I purchase these?
Just on dnd beyond you should be able to search them up in the marketplace
You can find duergar here and storm herald here.
Is there a way for me to build a character online without having to spend like 150 on books on dnd beyond
Whatever you spend on the individual purchases gets credited toward the book itself, too.
You can buy just the parts you need if you don’t want the full book.
I recently get a starter set for me and my friends to play dnd (never played before) and I was wondering- would the DM have to come up with the whole story and every path to take? That makes it seemed like it’d suck to be the DM
There are adventures available, but many DMs actually enjoy doing that part. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop is a good free starting one.
How do they even come up when them though? And if there’s one DM, would 2-3 players be the best?
How to come up with an adventure if not following a written one? Steal from other media and mash things together that haven't been before are two methods.
As for group size, official adventures are designed for 4-7 players. My personal minimum is three players, maximum six.
Do games normally use rolling bots when they're online?
Unless you’ve got a group that really trusts each other, yeah.
I have 70 sets of dice and basically only play online, I know the pain 😭
Get the Pixel dice which can connect to D&D Beyond via bluetooth.
Hi yall, I'm interested in learning and starting dnd. Unfortunately, I only found one other person to play with, is there a way to have like an automated dm so we can both be players?
I know some dudes who got chatgpt to dm their game but I'm not sure if it actually works
