Hi. New to dnd and looking for a game to be a part of. Any suggestions on where I to start?
Same as the above
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Is there a DM I can do a small mini campaign with to help me get a better feel of the play style and level up system?
I have the DnD Beyond app so that's how I made my druid and explored it's stats and skills and whatnot
Please check #find-a-game for info on how to find a DM or group to play D&D with.
like alone or with additional players

Either or. Kinda just wanna learn and have fun
#find-a-game has info on how to find a group or game to join
hiii i'm new to d&d, and am starting a campaign with some friends. I was sort of voted in as the gm for our group, and did a little trial run with a couple members. it went well, but now I am trying to learn how to actually be a gm and I sorta need some help. I started working on the opener to our first official session, and I would really appreciate it if someone could give it a listen! please dm me if interested, thank you for reading!
If you want more detailed help on how to be a dm #dm-discussion has always been really helpful for me
thank you!\

Hey everyone! I am only just starting out, can anyone tell me the best online platform for actually playing D&D online? I went on D&D beyond and created a character, but I'm not sure where to go from here
Have a look in #looking-for-players for games or on Roll20
Playing online usually means playing with a virtual tabletop (VTT), such as Roll20, Fantasy Ground, owlbear.rodeo, and Foundry VTT.
It's often the DM who decides which VTT to use.
I personally use Owlbear Rodeo, it's not that hard to learn and really easy to use.
Thanks so much!
can anyone tell me where i could find the biggest compendium of dragons
Fizbans treasury of dragons has most of the additional dragon stuff but apart from that just the monster manual
what does cr mean
Challenge Rating
Hey guys, wanna try playing but I have no clue on everything, I checked on how to join a campaign but Im worried that I have little to no clue on what information I need to know.. I do know the general fantasy stuff from games, movies and anime.. but do I have to read the dnd book before starting?
Well it always helps to give the game rules a read so you kind of know at least the lingo and some basic game mechanics.
Check the pinned messages here in this channel.

thanks I'll check these links out
is the longsword in dnd two handed or one handed?
Both
@vale shell It's versatile, which means that when you attack, if you have a free hand in addition to the one you're holding the sword in, you can choose to use it one or two handed
If you use it two-handed, it rolls a bigger damage die
thanks, just wondering because some video games put longsword as different to short/bastard sword
Dnd is not like a video game but the swords are kind of short sword-gladus. longsword-hand and a half sword. greatsword-claymore
Ah i see. So is it possible to wield greatsword with 1 hand or is that 2 handed only?
You must use two hands to attack with a greatsword.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment have a look at the weapons and the weapon properties
Ah thanks. I should probably read through this before attempting character sheet
Hello all im new here and have been trying to find a game to play and make new friends. I had an idea of a campane I would like to start and play in if anyone is intrusted.

Hello I'm a sorta new player to dnd, but not exactly since I used to have a dnd starter kit but had really no idea what i was actually doing and was just fooling around with two other people
Welcome! If you want tips for getting started, the free basic rules are pinned in this channel, or you can click the link in the post by Dyno Bot below this ⬇️

Oh God that's alot, overwhelming actually. ...
OK well, lets take it piece by piece then.
Is there maybe some kinda app or program for this sorta thing?
For which part?
Because the answer is yes, there are tools to help with almost every step, but the question is a little broad
I dunno...
Let's start at the beginning. Have you read the basic rules yet? Are you familiar with the basic concepts like AC, attack rolls, ability scores, etc?
Nope, like I said I didn't really know what I was doing...
The first thing I would do is get motivated and have fun with the learning process. Are you a creative person, more of a practical learner…?
I'm a artist
Yay! What about finding an interesting location and building a character?
Hm... I've always struggled to make a concrete character that doesn't shift depending on where in the universe he is
And I'm totally unsure in DND what is allowed
Ok. Well this link here (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules) is the basic rules. It certainly can seem like a lot, from the table of contents, but like I said, you can take it piece by piece. If you get to a specific part, and are confused about it, you are more than welcome to ask questions here, but also this YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN) covers individual topics from the rules in bite sized 5ish minute long videos. They are extremely well made, and explain things very well.
I got flashbanged with information when I clicked on it and panicked
I mean I knew there was a lot to set up, but I also didn't know there was a lot to set yp
I can definitely understand that. There is no getting around the fact that this is a bit of a complex game. Its not nearly as bad as it might seem from the outside though. Perhaps you may find it beneficial to watch some youtubers or twitch streamers play a game or two before trying to tackle the rules on your own? That's how I learned
Is hybrid classes a thing, because i never just play one class when I play any type of game?
You can multiclass. Each time you level up, you choose which class to take a level in. So at level 1, you can only take 1 level in any class, but at level 2 you could take another level in your same class, or take a level in a new one
Yep! Multi-classing is totally valid, you just add a class at a certain point in the level-up process. That is something you would want a dungeon master to help with on your first time.
What type of civil environment gets you motivated, urban, rural, slums?
Wdym?
That's a question best discussed with your DM.
I don't have one atm
It's not outside the realm of possibility, but what is or isn't allowed is ultimately up to them.
There is a very large list of races you can choose from, but there is also an optional "create your own" template race, in one of the suppliment books
Like if your character (aka PC) is conceptualized, where are they likely to live?
Hm, well I might go with one of my existing personas, because I honestly don't feel like drawing right now, my stylus is broken
Just with what their shape and personality is
They look to be a sorta knight feline
There is a printed feline race option, called the Tabaxi
Tabaxi would fit nicely there.
Usually a safe suggestion is to find a DM to work with before getting your heart set on any character or design. That way, if your DM ends up having a more restrictive game, you don't end up disappointed with all the work you've put in.
I guess what I’m getting at is that I personally took a look at some common locations, some lore about the Deities, and built my character with that in the background.
Generally
Starting with a basic character build is a way to dip your toes without getting sucked into the deep end and getting overwhelmed.
All races are pretty well balanced between each other. There aren't any that are better or worse than others. Tabaxi have a general focus on stealth and speed
Well he's a bit boastful
Sounds like a Swashbuckler
He's not exactly a quite type
Heya !
But would tabaxi by default be able to carry a sword that is long and stabs?
Your weapons are typically defined more by your class than your race.
Hm
What would I need to do in order to post that im looking for players ? ^^
(Any character can use any weapon, but some will be more effective than others.)
Head on over here to get started. 👇

That would be determined by your class, not your race. But my recommendation to you would be to look into making a tabaxi character with the Rogue class and the Swashbuckler subclass, using a Rapier as your weapon. That's a pretty common and well built combination
Ah oke, I did the looking for players ^^ thanks !
There's also Leonin. 🦁
So I guess I should look for a dm before trying to create a character
Eh, he's no lion, he's a small cat
sure but on the other hand creating a character helps with understanding the rules
It's totally fine to develop ideas, and think through a few. But if you fall in love with a particular character it makes it that little bit harder to find a game that fits with their vibe, class, and what sources you are using
Oh yeah it’s always a good idea to have a DM before hard committing to a character concept. You’ve no idea of what content they do or don’t allow, as well as any house rules or what the rest of the party is going to look like.
I generally suggest coming up with a few loose character concepts. Then you can work with your DM to find the best fit and add the finishing touches.
busy making the find a game form atm 🙂
Oh yeah self-promotions go in #dnd-advertisements , but all game listings belong in the LFG channels.
lots have changed in this discord the past year or so
What game styles are there??
Generally, yes. Its not a requirement though. Creating a character is a fun way to familiarize yourself with the rules and get a taste for what's to come. But a DM may or may not choose to make some modifications to the rules or limit/allow certain things. So if you make a character before finding a DM, you ought to be prepared to make changes if necessary
hello everyone im new here and want to learn and play
And what does it mean by preferred way to play??
i think it means like online or in person and stuff
Game styles are generally things like "Hack & Slash" for very combat focused, "Role Play Focused" for more character driven stories, "Political intrigue" for a game focused on in-world politics and alliances. Things like that. Its by no means a comprehensive list or an exact science, so just put whatever you think sounds interesting
Basically: what do you think would make for a fun game?
How about hack and slash and roleplay?
Sure 👍
In Person, Voice Chats, Video Calls, Play-By-Post
Things like that
And yeah, if there's any specific tools or whatever. What accommodations are you looking for in a game?
I think "times" is its own fill-box on the form
I dunno because I'm kinda new
That's as fair an answer as anything else.
I guess I wait now?
Or take a more proactive approach and start replying to games in #looking-for-players.
Im not a dm..
I know, but the DMs who are looking for players have all posted in #looking-for-players.
You can look through those posts and see if there's any that interest you.
And if there are, you can reply to them now instead of waiting for someone to reply to you.
you played RPG video games before? Any you particulary liked? What about movies?
That's a loaded question
Oh darnit, did i do something wrong <@&516370028053004306>
My post got deleted, is it because i wrote no sexual content ? 😦

But it can help you get a general idea what kind of games you might enjoy. So you can start looking for a game.
I honestly kinda can't remember what games I've played apart from off, Lisa the painful, omori, of course Pokemon, there might have been more but I forget..
I dunno if I should play right now, given my memory isn't the best
Finding the right group to play D&D with usually takes some time.
But as others have suggested, a good start is to go through the posts in #looking-for-players and reply for any games that sound fun. Also the Virtual Tabletop (VTT) Roll20 has a looking for group listing and a forum
I am looking, and am not finding a lot of posts that say my time and that they're accepting new players
you can look inother places
Like what?
It can take some time to find a game. Anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks depending on the kind of game and group you’re looking for.
other social media or other discord servers or just ask irl
I don't have motivation to wait weeks to find a game
And wdym ask irl, I don't have any friends that play DND
As in find your local libraries, game shops, or clubs if you’re in school. They often have their own boards or communities where people local to your area are organizing games.
D&D is not a game you can play quickly. Even if you do find a group, it can still take several days to find a date and time when everyone line up their schedules for 4-6 hours at a time. Especially if you want to play weekly. Scheduling is the greatest enemy any D&D group can face
Uh all I said was my age and my message got deleted??
yes. Don't say your real age online
Welp
But yeah if you’re an adult with your own means of transportation it’ll make it easier for you to search out any local game shops and go check them out.
Nope, I don't have transportation, I just have my legs
You’ll want to use the powers of Google for exploring your local area, then.
no bike? or public transporetr
Not really, kinda broke rn
Playing IRL is just one option. Its not the be-all end-all. If you can't, don't worry too much about it. There are plenty of games to find online
But there’s no “click button, receive DM” option in the game. You’ll need to put in some legwork to find a game.
It gets dramatically easier to build a group if you’re willing to DM, but I know many people aren’t interested in trying that as their first go.
I don't even know what I'm doing still, even after reading the basic rules, so there is no way I could dm... I wouldn't be that helpful if new players wanted help from me
There’s lots of adventures designed for new players and DMs alike. Lost Mines of Phandelver does a great job of teaching you the rules while also playing. It’s also free.
Yeah uh I'm not too trusting of strangers like that unfortunately, to randomly go up to a person like that, plus I'm kinda a introvert
A lot of games are fine with new players, even if they're not advertised as such. If you see a game that otherwise fits your requirements, you can always just ask.
And dms need to describe stuff.. I'm not the most descriptive person...
Its generally recommended to start as a player though. You certainly can start as a DM, but it puts a bit of extra burden on you.
You mean a lot?
Depends on the person, and how they feel about that work, but yes, it can be
If a new DM has new players and everyone's clear that you're learning together, it's fine.
You don't have to follow the rules perfectly. Mistakes can and will happen no matter how long you've been a DM.
lol I forget stuff all the time.
So if something comes up that you're not sure how to handle, you can pause the game to look up the answer, or just make something up to keep the game going and find the answer later.
As long as everyone's having fun, you're doing it right.
That's the real trick to being a good dm
but again, you DON'T have to start as a DM if you don't want to. I feel like the more we talk about it, you might be thinking we are trying to pressure you into it. That's not what's happening here
ChatGPT is my best friend.
Chat gpt feels like cheating
And consuming literature. That's the only other way I can stoke my awful creativity
I was hoping to find A DM that could do a campane based on HP
If it reduces your enjoyment, sure. But it enhances mine greatly
Strixhaven is a campaign based on a magic school
where can i find this at?
General rule for describing a scene: try to describe at least 3 senses.
What's a loaner, I saw a DND meme and didn't understand the joke
you'll need to provide more context that that. Best I can figure is it probably refers to someone loaning another person one of their rule books, but IDK
Dice
Oh, when then that just refers to someone loaning dice to another player.
But why is it so cursed?
Again, that depends on the context
Well the context was that he was a new player and that he says he's gonna get the loaner, and everyone didn't like that
What could be so bad about a loaned pair of dice?
I assume they're not as good as normal dice?
I have a bag of really bad dice that I've threatened my players with. If they forget their dice for a session, they have to use those dice, which have a ton of bubbles in them and haven't been sanded down.
Well, I'm not 100% sure, but I think the idea there is that they are referring to how D&D players have a bit of a culture of treating dice like treasure. They are valuable personal items, that people like to collect. So, when a player doesn't have their own dice, it means they aren't engaging in that same culture, or actively taking dice away from another player
huh
I collect a lot of dice, but I've never thought of players not having their own as 'taking dice away from another player'
that's really odd to me, ngl
The video by dwarvendad and it's called cursed dice on youtube
Or how at a table there usually is always that one person with dozen of dicesets that can just lend some to a new player no problem
I am that person
same. I think the more likely explaination is that they are upset about a player not caring about their own dice.
Maybe if you watch it you might understand
@timid estuary meme's are not a matter of discussion for this channel, which is for helping newcomers get started with D&D
Yeah it is referring to that one person that just collects dice and has enough pairs that they are lending them out to others on the table to use
I watched the video. It was this
Some players don’t like others touching their dice or using others’ dice. They’ll jokingly refer to it as cursing or tainting the dice.
That said, some people put some great value in their dice and minis, so it’s always best to ask permission before touching someone else’s gear.
Seen enough $100+ sets of dice to know what you mean there...
ironically, my loaner set costed more than any of my other D&D sets
That's like breaking out the fine china for company
And eating off paper plates every other day
I’ve got the pound o’ dice for my loaner needs. They’re great for when someone needs a random dice.
This is more of a #dnd-discussion topic folks

rogues can't cast spells?
Not on the base level but I believe certain subclasses get the ability
alright
Yeah, the arcane trickster is a rogue with spellcasting. The others subclasses lack that feature.
where is the artifcer class from?
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and I think the Eberron book.
thanks
A classic combo: half-orc bear totem barbarian. You'll basically be unkillable.
All classes can be strong in different situations and in different times. There's no real "best" class! If you're interested in optimizing your character's stats and skills, maybe check #optimization
#optimization can help if you really want to crunch numbers. Barbarian is a good choice for a strength based character. As for race check with your DM if they are using Tasha's floating racial modifier rules (so +2/ +1 to any stat) or using racial stats as written (Like how dragonborn get +2 strength, +1 cha)
What is the better buy the starter kit or the essentials kit?
Starter Set IMO
Probably the essentials kit. Aside from the included dice, everything in the starter set is actually available for free online
Ooh! Conflicting messages! How fun!
There is a lot available online for free, so it's up to you how much you'd like to have physical copies of!
In case it's not confusing enough, there are multiple starter sets: the one with Lost Mine of Phandelver (and the adventure is free on D&D Beyond), the one with Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, and the Stranger Things one (which you can play without knowing a thing about the show; it's just a marketing ploy).
I'd suggest skimming some written or video reviews and pick based on what has the most of stuff you want and/or what adventure sounds most appealing to you (and your friends).
I personally also think that the starter kit is a better starting point for absolute TTRPG newbies. The essentials kit is good, but I think better for people coming from other games...or if you already know you prefer a more sandbox game. The starter kits are more narrative-led.
I purchased the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle box set today 🙂
im getting my first set soon
its a clear set with little cogs inside. my first character is going to be a steampunk themed gnome
Hope it serves you well!
Looking forward to running the adventure, I am busy reading through the books first 🙂
Hello
Moon druid using ONLY the players handbook as a source is doable right? I don't see much that I'll be missing out on besides some optional spells from tasha's, from what I can see
Moon druids are regarded as a pretty good choice even without any optional features, so it should be doable, though it's hard to say without more context.
We also have #character-discussion for these sorts of questions.
It's absolutely playable! In fact, it's just as playable as it was when 5e was released. Have fun with it!
Good to hear, thanks to both of you. Sorry for maybe posting in the wrong chat 😅
No worries. Some folks can only see certain channels, so it's worth pointing out the others for that reason.
You might wanna get your hands on the Monster Manual for access to a few more beasts, but yeah Moon Druid is fine.
There's no definitive set of terms that players and DMs use, so my recommendation would be to communicate specifically what you want (and don't want) when reaching out to a group. If a player asked me for narrative but no RP, for instance, I'd be confused.
Some terms you might have luck with: dungeon delve, dungeon crawl, hack and slash, low RP, no RP, combat-heavy.
can a druid cast barkskin on herself
Sure.
You touch a willing creature. Until the spell ends, the target's skin has a rough, bark-like appearance, and the target's AC can't be less than 16, regardless of what kind of armor it is wearing.
Self counts as a willing creature.
thank you!
also im so bad at math and rules... is 24 hit points.. at level 3.. rightttt?
Or did i mess up. Cause my level 3 bard only has 8
Sorry the other one is a druid
All classes have a "Hit Dice". This serves two functions, and one of them is for your HP per level. You get the max amount + con at level 1, and then roll the dice + con for all subsequent levels.
Your Constitution modifier can significantly change the total HP your character has.
*Roll or take the average.
So your Bard would have 8HP if it had a +0 Con modifer...level 1. They should have earned 2d8+2*Con since then if they are now level 3.
Okay, I think i screwed up on Roll20 then
What's your constitution?
14 with an asterisk??
2d8+(2*CON MOD)
Right, so your total HP right now should be:
8+2 = 10 for level 1
1d8 + 2 for level 2
1d8+ 2 for level 3
For a total of 14+2d8 at level 3 🙂
Is this making sense, if there's anything confusing, point it out and I can expand upon it.
Noo It does make sense. I think i just messed up my roll20 character sheet and now i cant edit it back to normal
Your DM may need to do that for you if they created the game on the platform.
Roll20 can be kind of tricky with the permissions.
i think thanks for catching that guys, I really appreciate it. He's just letting me start over

I think the dm is getting frustrated tho becasue im so new Y_Y
The best you can do is familiarize yourself with the character creation rules to what extent they stick for you. Reading is one route. There are also multiple video tutorials, so if one doesn't click, try another.
The DM is probably getting frustrated because Roll 20 is frustrating 😄 don't read too much into it, that platform does a lot of things that bug DMs. It's why I moved off it. If you are being as polite with him as you are with us, you are doing fine, and you seem to be paying attention to have noticed the HP issue.
for paladin health changes each level...it says "1d10 (or 6) + consitution modifier each level"
- what does the "or 6" mean?
- does this mean each time i level i have to roll a dice to see how many HP i get? is that why there is a "max" or average setting on dnd beyond for health?
You can roll 1d10 or take 6 HP, the average value on a d10. And yes, the DM will tell you whether they use rolling, average, or let the player decide on which method for generating level-up HP.
You get more HP on each level up.
thank you again
thanks for helping 🙂
Hey, im new to dnd and gonna buy some books soon. I was thinking of making a character thats kind of like a servant doll given life that uses a giant scisor for weapons and used to be a seamstress before she became sentient? What class combination would really fit this type of character that uses magic, scissors and thread and all that fun stuff? And also what books would be needed, moneys not an object in this situation ( ive saved up a bit too much )
This is something you would have to discuss with your DM if they allow such a non-standard character and weapons.
Going for an elden ring ranni look except a doll instead of whatever she is
Still, what class would fit this type of character best?
Your description doesnt really give us a class
you really havent given much to go off for what they actually do
You’ve described …a person with a slashing weapon
and maybe some magic
You've given a broad concept.
I was thinking someone who uses magic aswell as physical weapons at the same time, focusing on the physical side with magic as a second
Suggestion, put a pin in your concept
Read the class descriptions
See what inspires you
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet on the base classes?
Yep
eldritch knight fighter maybe?
there’s no “scissor” weapon but fortunately flavor is free
What something looks or sounds like is generally unlimited and subject only to your imagined, as long as it isn’t impacting game mechanics
For now, learn the rules
I was thinking of buying some books, any reccomendations aside from core?
I would recommend not buying any books until you try the game out and see if you like it.
yeah

Big scissors and dolls and thread stuff
Sounds like an artificer with some reflavored abilities
just bought 26 sets of dice
I have spent way less on dnd stuff since starting than I had when I was big into magic the gathering
😮
Problem with finding a dm is that i live in finland, where d&d is basically dead, finding any info on any groups or places is like finding a needle in a haystack
YEAHH VERY WORTH IT THO
Its probably gonna be some time before i find any group at all... guess im forced to play online
im strugglking to find one too dont worry
If you want to be a doll you could reflavor the warforged
hey im new here just wanna say hi
hello
I'd like to say hello and welcome you good day that is my name
new to the server but not dnd, there is a race (unsure whether it was official or not or if still able to be found) that i believe was called reborn that had a choice to be a scarecrow-esque being, which would fit the doll concept - there are rogue and fighter subclasses that have magic wielding features that might work, and if you take into account dual-wielding/two weapon fighting rules you could flavor a regular swords stats but with a scissor design as though they broke in half (if your DM allows that) - sorry for an info dump, im at work and peeking in here when i can lol, hope it helps
I am an absolute noob when it comes to D&D. Just tried to create my first character sheet and failed royally 😎 Any idea how to keep track of all the info that is given on the D&D Beyond Basic Rule guide? Because right now I just feel incredibly overwhelmed
Also: Hi 👋 As I am new to this place
Well... have you tried DnDBeyond's character sheet tool? https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
It can help you get over that initial challenge of "how do I put together a character?"
Then use that to learn from it for if/when you decide to try it on your own via a PDF or paper sheet.
Hi, also a noob here, I was able to do a character sheet, but I'm not sure where to go from here.
Yes, I tried that but failed halfway through at the Ability table when things become really detailed
Well after you've given the rules a view (or two or three - but don't feel like you need to memorize them), then I'd say the next thing to do is find a group to play with. Check #find-a-game for info on how to do that.
Can you describe what kind of character you'd like to build?
thanks!
I was just kind of trying things out, because I wanted to apply what I had learned from the guide. I randomly chose monk and half-elf, just to see if I could get it done. Turned out I couldn't 😅
Did you read the basic rules on character creation?
They explain what the ability scores are and how to select them
Yeah, I did, but it doesn't really give you an explanation whether to use the Standard Array, Manual/Rolled or Point Buy. Not that I'd know what any of that means or how to do that
The basic rules should explain standard array and point buy
I would go with standard array as it’s the simplest and most widely accepted
But when you make a character for an actual campaign the dm will say what to use
Please don't tell me that I'll then have to whip all that up on the spot and then use it five minutes later, because that would be the fastest way to get me to never ever play
How can I find a group to play with? I’ve never played a full game of D&D, but I’ve been trying for years irl and can never find group who will give it a shot irl
How can I get into DnD online since I’m not having much luck offline. Or is there somewhere I should be looking offline?

i think i find the dungeon master role a bit more appealing, how should i start? i have my guide, is 6e ever supposed to be a thing?
They are currently playtesting the next updates to D&D - see #1026901431132885064 for more info.
Currently they’re working on “OneDnD” which basically seems to be 5.5e
il check that out
To start as a dm make sure you know the basics of the rules and then you just need some players
Being a DM is another way to play D&D - it's a bit like being a stage manager and a cat herder, but you get to set the stage for the story you'll all play and help guide things along. It can be a lot of fun (and it can be a lot of work).
If you're new to DM'ing I do recommend running a pre-written adventure. That way you can focus more on learning and managing the game mechanics because the major structure of the story has already been built for you. And of course you can add your own tweaks and adjustments to it.
i have always enjoyed in story development and feel this is a good place to flex it
sounds helpful
If you want more DM advice and suggestions, head on over to #dm-discussion.
Lots of DMs there to help out.
thank you
Generally character creation happens in session 0, where what rules and books being used are discussed and everyone makes their character together. It’s often a few hours so there’s less “on the spot” issues.
Okay, thank you, that's good to know and a relief. I thought you'd have to have everything ready at hand when you start
I've been playing this game for years and I still forget stuff and mess things up. Focus on having fun with friends and you'll be fine regardless of how much you know/don't know about the game rules. I mean knowing something does help the game go smoother but again, no one expects you to memorize it.
can anyone help me make a character and explain some of the basic dnd rules and mechanics? I have no idea how to play but since its summer i have a lot of free time and i would like to start playing

Just moved to nyc and don't really know too many people or people that play how do you go about finding a group to join or people to play dnd
Im completely new to dnd and roleplaying, im quite excited but im kind of alone in this and a little bit overwhelmed by all of the information. Do you guys have any advice on where to start? im trying to make a character and i see all of the races and languages and i feel a bit blind going through it.
Find some friends to start a dnd campaign
In one of the biggest cities i am quite certain there are many game stores where you can start as well as an Adventurerer’s League chapter
Im also new to DnD Really trying to figure how to find people to play with online or in person to experinence it for the first time

ohh im actually in nyc too. im not to sure where to go either
is there any languages that are more useful to know than the others?
The same way you find anything else, yelp or google a game store
Campaign specific
Ive been reading thru that since yesterday
Im going to try the introductory demo, thanks OptionZero!
No need to stop. Or re-read as needed
U can ask specific questions here
I'm in a campaign and it's hard to run them because we cannot have meetings due to school or personal reasons. We decided to try to move it on discord but don't know where to start. Is there any tips or idea to help out.
I got you, whole group is new to online play?
If so the first thing youre going to want to do is make sure the DM is going to be able to run the game he wants on the program youre going to use, what kind of campaign was it?
Yo do I have to make a server or smth
It's our first time online
What are using to play online? Are you using a virtual tabletop (VTT)?
Discord is what I'm thinking
Tryna make a Discord server
Setting up your own private Discord server is great for text and voice communication.
Discord will be fine for voice, but for visual stuff like battle maps and tokens, was your game theater of the mind, or did you use tokens and maps?
is gunslinger controversial or something? also do people homebrew in different types of guns at all?
It’s not an official subclass.
So it may be hard to convince some DMs to allow it as a result.
oh ok
Where can I read about what advantage you get from hiding after a rogues cunning action. Do you get an attack bonus next attack? Trying to find it in the PHB
Sorry for the late reply. I don't know I'm looking where to put all my visual stuff. Im gonna ask my dm what he wants
Advantage is advantage. There arent different types.
"advantage" is a specific thing
Thank you!
What's a good thing for a monk and a water genasi
What
I am a water genasi race and a monk class
Yes and?
This is usually a place for questions
I am a Kajiit
I swipe 5 of your gold coins while you aren't looking and duck into the alley.
Whats going on here tonight, folks just randomly popping in here and posting random stuff?
hai any tips 4 first character
what class?
i think it was a question but they didnt clarify what "good thing"
i think warlock it seems like fun i think
I’d recommend fighter for a first character
so youve read the first 4 chapters of the basic rules on character creation?
if they want warlock let them go for it
idk i dont have a book sorry
They asked for a recommendation and i gave one
Mb I wad busy. I wanted to know what skills or tips I should know about the monk
the basic rules online
warlock might be a bit complicated for a first character but if you're playing with other people who have experience you'll probably be fine
like what skills you should choose?
If you want to play a caster, be prepared to do the work to learn it. More stuff to consider than a martial, so read up
Yes
i mean perception and persuasion are always good
can aasimars fly? orare they just aesthetic like their 1d6 facial features?
Only for a minute if they have the Radiant Soul feature
Hello all, I am new to dnd discord channel and just started playing a campaign for the first time. Where can I ask some questions about my class (blood hunter)? Thanks in advance for your help.
think so yes

yes
cool
are there channels per class as well? or servers even?

Hello I'm having a hard time knowing what kind of character I want to play and creating one so I wanted to use a pre-made one in dnd beyond but I want to know which class can be helpful but you don't need to be very creative since I haven't played before
@fast turtle do you have a favorite fantasy hero
Fighter is pretty simple to help you get the grasp of the basics
Barbarian and rogue are both slightly more advanced but still manageable if you feel up to it
Oh ok I'll look at that them and see what's best for me
Have fun
So I wanted to change the character a bit to make it a bit more to my liking but when I got to the description I got confused on how I'm trying to figure out the weight
does it matter for the game you are playing?
I don't know know I just wanted to make a character before trying to play I guess I'll put that to the side then until it is important to know
Character weight or carry weight?
does it matter? Ime that's a table choice
Oh ok thanks

What do backgrounds do
PERFECT alr. i’m about to read so hard
Go get it
Other than flesh out character they add skills
They describe the character's life before the present moment. Their upbringing, so to speak. If you look at them on DnD Beyond you'll see at the top a set of proficiencies and equipment, which is added on top of everything you already got through your class. Here's folk hero as an example:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/backgrounds/folk-hero
There's also a feature later down the page which is a little bonus.
However, the other thing they do is provide an entry point for roleplaying the character. They usualyl have some tables with maybe a defining event, and then PIBF: Personality, Ideal, Bond and Flaw. These can form the basis of your character.
Some players roll on those tables. Some pick from them. Some ignore them entirely and come up with something original. All are valid approaches - it's an aide, not a restriction!
Ok thank you I made a soldier that’s a kleptomaniac rogue so I used that as a background but I didn’t know It gave me skills and stuff
I want to find a group of DnD enthusiast to learn the game with. Is that possible?
So you could go for Soldier if you want to emphasise that military part of their life, Criminal if you want to emphasise that part of their life...or some other third thing! You can even take one of those for the mechanical benefits, i.e. the equipment, proficiencies and features, but then take personality traits from both.

Oh 👀
how long roughly does it take to find a DM?
Thank you!
Basically impossible to say, but there's definitely more people looking for DMs than there are DMs. It takes no time at all if you decide to be the DM 😄
well, it'd be better to know the game first, before being a DM
You might think that, but it's not really a "graduation" situation. A lot of DMs get started by going straight into it. You are playing a quite different game to the players. The starter set adventures are based around the idea of a new DM with new players.
How does one actually play DnD? I am very new to it despite knowing about it for a long time already. I don't really know anyone who plays it either so its a very grey area for me.

unsheaths 3 very sharp and deadly looking throwing kunai with red ribbons

hey :> i just made a character sheet…. can someone tell me if i ate or if i need to fix it.
Just post the link
Ate 🤯
are😌
Holy damn that's detailed
Ok so your missing some equipment like leather armour and some weapons
Did you roll your stats?
i did roll my stats :>
📝📝ok adding now
I’d use point buy or standard array so you get a more balanced character and less odd numbers
Yeah point buy is definitely the right way to go, otherwise it could be too broken stats
📝📝📝real!! ok ok changing now 🏃💨
Which is better? Milestone or xp based?
You also probably want some damage spells
Your dm will tell you which to use
Oh okay
one more question, the story that we participate in doesn't end until the dm said so right?
Yeah
Well kinda
It’s like a choose your own adventure book with near infinite paths
The dm lays out the basics but you choose how to interact with it
oh damn, usually the dm also determine which lores to use yeah?
The DM decides on the setting the adventure takes place in.
The dm decides what’s happening the world but you can influence it just like anyone else living in that world
cool! that sounds like a lot to deal with innit?
The DM presents situations for the player characters (PCs) to act/react to.
You should just know your character (class features, any spells, and basic combat rules)
alright thanks for the advice
The DM has a lot more work than the players (probably why there aren't as many DMs as there are players).
I get it, it's intimidating enough it is for a first play, not to mention dming a whole adventure.
You might think that, but there are adventures built for new DMs with new players, and it eases you in bit by bit
Oh, so everyone can stutter and fumble here and there together so it's less awkward 💯
Haha pretty.much!
Well so in conclusion, I just pretty much need to pay attention to the story and my character as a player?
Yep
Yes. A good DM will also be receptive to help you integrate ideas you have. For example, if you want your character to be from a distant town, they should be able to help identify that town. If it's a homebrew world, they might just put in your hometown to fit you. That's part of the collaborative storytelling.
That's wonderful, wait is homebrew one of the preset world or something? I haven't skim through the lore yet 💀
Homebrew means unofficial and custom made
Yes, a lot of people use DND beyond to manage their character
Others prefer paper, or use a Virtual Tabletop which will include its own management tools
It’s recommended to make a new character when you join a campaign so you can make sure your character fits the campaign
Noted, thanks guys
I made a standard character, is there anything missing?
https://ddb.ac/characters/103868842/fUO6Ts
You need to equip your equipment
Also your walking speed is rlly low for some reason
Yeah I made my character kinda encumbered, is that normal?
No
Aight, thanks g
I would for now just disable encumbrance in the character manager
Perhaps not needing 10 rations and 10 torches (at 1 lb each)
Or a 10 lb iron pot...
Also the iron pot
gotcha
alright, thanks for the feedback, I didn't really know which to use so I just threw them in there. 😎
yo im new here
Also you didn’t choose a martial weapon from the martial weapon and a shield starting equipment thing
Apart from that it looks pretty good
Huh I chose longsword earlier, that's weird
Just add that in and you’re good to go I think
aight thanks 🙏
What do you guys usually do to find a campaign to play? Can you recommend me some sites? 🤔
I need to make a character and i Don't have a handbook any help is much appreciated

More of a #dm-discussion , shall we take it there so we don't clutter the channel?
Oh, yes im sorry.
Hey guys i just got the dnd essentials kits along some characters i got two books inside the essential kit that was adventure and rule book which so you read first and can i use my characters i got when playing sorry if it is logic but im new
I'd recommend reading the rulebook first, as that explains the mechanics by which the adventure book is built upon. Don't feel like you need to read all of the rulebook in one go either, as some of it might not be applicable to you.
Okay thanks i got 5 characters can i use them when i playing the adventure in essential kit?
Yes, those are pregenerated characters meant for the adventure.
Do i need to fill the papers about them?
May I ask you clarify which papers?
I got some character creation paper
The point of a pre-generated character is that they are an already filled-out character sheet
Where do you find them they where not in the kit they where bought separately
Ah, okay. I believe (don't have a copy on hand) the pregenerated characters have their own pre-printed sheets with their stats and such filled out; the blank ones are for you to make your own characters with.
Arh thank you
And also can i play as the dongeun master to or only the player?
Of course. If you ever need more sheets, they can be printed for free from the official site the creators have: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Okay thank you so much
You can play as the dungeon master or as a player at any given time, but you can't be both at the same time.
So if im the dongoun master i cannot be in the adventure aswell
That would be correct.
FWIW though, it might not be a bad idea to play with yourself and flip between roles to help familiarize yourself with both sides of the table.
Aw man we are only two people and I thought we could play together but still be the dongouns master
Okay thank you
Well, you can always try and reach out to other friends as well -- especially if you or your friend is willing to pick up the Dungeon Master role. The game is normally designed around 4-6 players and then a Dungeon Master.
Yeah i can try but idk if they are into it and on the box of the essential kit does it say that you can play between 2-6 players i think i will do as you say and switch between dongoun master and player fir my first experience
Hey man idk if you know where i can find those pre filled out sheets the line is icons of the realm premiums miniatures
Did you buy a separate set of minis?
Yes
It does not appear there are character sheets for those. They’re just minis for you to use if you want
So i need to make my own character sheets for those?
We’re dealing with two different things:
The D&D Starter Set made by WOTC with an adventure book, rulebook, 5 pregenerated characters and some dice. I dont have the set so i dont know what characters they gave you
And
A set of minis made by Wizkids that can be used , advertised as a starter set of class race/class combos
Do the character sheets in the Starter set match the minis?
The thing with essential kit is that you have to create your own character so no pre made characters
ok then you’re going to be making your own characters
The minis are just a tool to help visualize the game and for fun. U can still use them if you want, even if theyre not spot on to what character you make
I mean people use coins, dice, poker chips as minis
The minis are just a physical item for fun and for visualization, the backstory is what YOU decide
There are websites that let you design the minis appearance and will custom 3d print you whatever you want
There are also endless options for premade minis, painted or not
Yes it was just if there was any websites for the characters story that help newer players
Before going into the deep end of minis, read the written materials first to get some idea of the available race and classes and rules
Yeah thanks
Its your imagination
But it is best to keep it simple, and focus on:
- what is your characters motivation
- personality traits
- long/short term goals
- flaws
Yeah i will definitely remember this creating them thank you for the help
Remember you arent playing your backstory, you’re playing thr adventure ahead. The backstory exists to inform your journey
Thank you for you help and guidance
Remember have fun
Ofc i will
Hiya
Hi
Great have a heroic journey

Apologies
Nah, its okay.
Hi I was wondering are characters transferable like could I play in one game and then take my character to another game
If you play adventures league you can, maybe if you had the same DM for a one shot and then when into a full campaign you could do it
dnd seems so cool and my friends play it but i have no idea where to start learning, does anyone know websites & stuff i could read to try to understand more terms next time i see them so its easier for them to teach me?

^ Useful resources to start learning D&D
Also watching D&D livestreams may help you understand the terminology and game mechanics - just remember that most D&D streams are entertainment first and less about teaching the exact rules. Many livestream games have homebrew rules that are not official rules and things like that.
So you have to make new characters for each game?
thank youuu
Unless you're playing Adventurer's League or the DM and group allow re-using a character used in a previous campaign (a set of games used to tell/explore a specific story), then no, each campaign usually starts with a new, unique character for that campaign.
Ok cool! Thanks
Thank you
Pretty much, if you lvl up to say lvl 5 and finish a campaign and start a new one at lvl 1 you wound be able to use that PC
Oh ok cool! Thanks
So this is my first time doing a warlock class, and my second time ever having made a character, so, do warlocks have like, the ability to see spirits? Or anything in the non corporeal realm?
Not really what are you actually after
A high-level warlock could select the spell True Seeing for one of their Mystic Arcanum, which allows the target to see into the Ethereal Plane.
Idk, something that can communicate with spirits or deities, etc. but im also a fan of warlocks so I chose that class
Certain warlocks can also learn the spell Speak With Dead.
dont all warlocks learn it?=
According to DDB, just The Undying and The Undead.
Your patron could be spirits it’s something to work with your DM about working it into your character
If you really wanted to lean into that, I’d suggest a College of Spirits Bard instead.
Yeah spirits bard is all about that stuff
Bards of the College of Spirits seek tales with inherent power—be they legends, histories, or fictions— and bring their subjects to life. Using occult trappings, these bards conjure spiritual embodiments of powerful forces to change the world once more. Such spirits are capricious, though, and what a bard summons isn’t always entirely under their control.
You might be thinking of the invocation (Whispers of the Grave) that grants Speak with Dead at-will.
thank you that was maybe it, also it does seem like a warlock spell tbh
I did some research on the inspiration that I’m sort of basing my character after, and I saw that an echo knight or a genie warlock would work, is that accurate at all?
An echo knight’s echo could certainly be flavored as a spirit.
While neither option gives you anything special mechanically for such a thing, they could be fun to flavor.
What’s the inspiration
Mainly just his relationship with rika
HeY Everyone
welcome!

Hi
How are you all ?
Awesome
Well i have a question
Shoot
Well I am a digital artist and I am doing all kind of artwork is there any chance where I can show some of my artwork ?
#dnd-arts-and-crafts - but must be clearly D&D related.
And if advertising, please use #dnd-advertisements to list how folks should contact you, etc. for commissions.
Hi
İm looking for a dnd game server and it will be my first time anybody can help me?
Hey Jammandrei, have you read the basic rules yet? Already comfortable with play?
I put in the looking for dm request in the find a game channel, that’s probably ur best bet, but I’ve only been here a few hours so idk how accurate that is
It can take a while to find a game spread your net wide
If you don't mind paying for a game, you may find a game quicker. There are some places to find this, #paid-looking-for-game, or on a site like startplaying.games.
Greetings and well met everyone!
Hello! 🌟
I am a blind traveler who has been searching for many a year for a way to engage with the multiverse. Sadly, for much of the time, I had no reliable method of tracking myself and participating in adventures… until I found the beyond! It was a little daunting at first, but with perseverance, I navigated the beyond and discovered different versions of myself. It is an exciting time!
Neat. I destroyed all my multiverse selves so im just the one.
I’ve always been intrigued with D&D, but could never find accessible character sheets, or methods of keeping track of characters. I found D&D Beyond, and though I struggled with the UI at first, I eventually figured out how to create characters. I’ve managed to create a couple and am excited to hopefully find a game soon.
That's great! Welcome! #find-a-game contains instructions on how to go about using the #750812887697588356 or #looking-for-players pages
Thank you. I’m exploring the server now 🙂
It's dangerous to go alone! Take this -> ⚔️
nods in appreciation and accepts the proffered blades My thanks friend.
And one more thing is anyone know where can i find the drizzt legend books after chapter 17? I found some but they was too overpriced
Hey guys, complete newbie to DND here! Have a quick question on classes. I'm... kind of stuck on what to pick for a first class. I have read the basics on what each class does but I can't decide on what class is best for beginners who want characters who strengths are by using their wits. (Such as Intelligence and Wisdom.)
They can all be good! Do you feel more like magic is your thing, martial prowess, or somewhere in between, a bit of both
What do you want to play? Someone who fights melee or ranged? Someone who casts spells for offense or as support?
Or are there any fictional characters that you really identify with and would love to play something similar to?
Dnd and beyond have guide i used that for creation but i dont know how to add skillpoints normally
Melee martials: Barbarian, cleric, fighter, paladin, monk, ranger, rogue
Ranged martials: Fighter, ranger, rogue
Spellcasters: Bard, cleric sorcerer, warlock, wizard
5E D&D doesn't use skill points. You're either proficient in an ability skill or you're not.
So what it uses?
You start off proficient with a few ability skills with your class and/or background. You add your Proficiency Bonus to those ability skills you're proficient with.
İ just seen there some numbers starts 8 and ends 15
At level one you have a Profiency Bonus of +2 and then you add your relevant ability score modifier.
Things like Expertise can double your Proficiency Bonus to a relevant skill.
Those are your ability scores. Skills are a separate part of the game, so he was confused as to which of the two you were referring to.
Somewhere in between. For a fictional character, I have a few characters that I wanted to base kind of around on like Dragon Ball Super literation on Broly, Luke Skywalker and Anakin Skywalker from Star Wars, Barry Allen aka the Flash from DC, and last but not least Peter Parker and Milies Morales from Marvel in regards to personality.
İ have tried to create variant human rouge
Ability scores are typically from 3 to 18 (from 3d6) before you add your racial Ability Score Increase. Depending on your ability score, you have a modifer from it. An ability score of 10 is a +0 modifier while an 18 ability score is a +4 modifier.
Can i share ss here?
hey gamers, is anyone here able to one day go on vc with me and kinda explain the base of character sheet building and how the game works? i would love to play one day but i can't afford the game :(
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

thanks
Basic rules are free
You don't need to spend any money to start playing, the Basic Rules are free (but limited in race and class selection (think of it as a demo)):
Basic Rules PDF
https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf
Basic Rules on D&D Beyond
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Personality-wise, those are some good ideas! Ability-wise those characters are kinda on a power level above what you would expect from most of your gameplay in D&D. But if you take an idea like A Jedi Knight...well you could look at Fighters, and some of their more supernatural subclasses, like Eldritch Knight and Psi Warrior, and get a lot of that kind of ability.
thanks guys
İ selected variant human and set ability race bonus to dexterity and intelligence now what should i do?
Are you using dndbeyond?
Did you click show beginner help txt?
Yes and i need more
Interesting. What are the differences between a Eldritch Knight and a Psi Warrior?
An Eldritch knight is a fighter that gets some spellcasting ability, some access to other class's spells, and some fighter features that make the most out of the ability to spellcast.
A Psi Warrior has unique abilities powered by a unique resource (Psi points), that are not classed as spells. These include telekenetic pushes, psi-enfused weapon attacks, temporary shields, enchanged jumps...basically jedi powers 😄
I've asked my Dm if my sheet was right and he said that i need to add my +1 and +2 but i have no idea what hes talking about or how
He said to any two scores but idk how to do it on roll20
Almost all races get a +2 and a +1 to a particular ability. A lot of DMs now don't care which ability you add them to though. You just need to edit the ability score numbers you have chosen to improve.
alright thank you @viral pelican
so add it to my modifer or to the say i have "15 Charisma" i add my +2 and make it "17" charisma?
Sure, if you want to improve your charisma.
Do I want to add it to my modifer which is 3 or the base number which is 15?
Base number, the modifier should update automatically.
ok perfect
What level is the character?
your dm is the one that typically decides that
Hey I'm new to the game and I've only played one campaign. I wanted to try playing as a Kenku for my second playthrough and wanted some tips
Check out #find-a-game
Tips for what, exactly? Playing as a kenku?
Kenku can be fun! Just remember to not take the whole "can't talk" stuff to a point where it is annoying to other players 🙂
If you’re using the newer version of kenku, you can talk.
That... actually makes sense. Won't be surprising if a secret society of Psi Warriors existed as the Jedi concil lol
What are good Lore examples of why characters become either a Eldritch Knight or a Psi Warrior besides "Just Cause?" I want to make my character to be believable without breaking immersion to the setting.
Even old Kenku could talk normally if they were around a lot of people they would of picked up the words to use to talk normally
Or just pretend your bumblebee from transformers and talk in song lyrics and radio ads
An eldritch knight need not be anything too unusual. Just someone with moderate arcane aptitude but who needs to back it up with physical prowess. Or, start as a regular fighter, and then study arcane tricks off a wizard party member.
Psionics are trickier because they are less common. Rare enough that there aren't many organisations or practicioners about.
There's a psionic order in a distant country called Tethyr. Your character could be from that and hiding their secret, while they go on some quest to the sword coast...or maybe ran away? Then at level 3, find a reason to reveal this little secret.
This is getting into more of a #character-discussion area though, so feel free to tag me there if you want to continue discussing it
Yes
i got no clue where to post so imma just post here but im only here cause i wanted to make friends to talk about dnd stuff with and maybe get some feedback and help on my ocs
Check the channel list

Hi
Hello
Hi
I'm currently running curse of strahd with 3 dragon borns
What classes?
Barbarian red db,
bard blue dB
Warlock bronze db
Pretty good balance
The barbarian is kinda op already
But I mean...that's barbarian for you
First fight he crushed a ghouls head
With his hands
We have a warlock...who barely uses his spells xD
He wanted his pact weapon to be a chakram...I was like 0_0 damn that's cool ok
Yes I'm a new dm ^^
But I have 2 campaigns as a player under my belt,
Yea , the barbarian player is slowly learning "no...your +4 strength does not = superman xD
3 of them started in death house and upon besting it gained level 3
Oh can we dm? So I don't spoil anything for curse of strahd
Yooo been debating on joining a campaign but outside of my irl campaign i don't know how to do stu3
Stuff*
We have #tales-from-the-table or #dnd-discussion or #dm-discussion
This channel is for newcomers to ask basic questions
So, when looking for a game… how will I be notified if someone responds to my request? I just saw that there was an unread in the channel, but no messages, save for the ones from the bot.
When you post, the bot creates a thread. Folks will either leave a message in the attached thread (so check it occasionally) or they’ll DM you.
@spice cosmos yes they will dm or ping you
Thank you
Hey
Hi
How are ya
P good thx hbu?
Good thanks 🙂 I sent a msg in #character-discussion looking for someone to help me with a character ive been developing, do you think you could help?
Seems like something to talk about there!
Yeah I’ll hop over there
is there someone that can help me explaim how to be a DM
i feel like i understand the core concept
Do you prefer reading or watching videos?
I am def not a mod
hey im completely new to dnd could someone teach me how to get started
literally never played before but always wanted to
Check out the pinned messages in this channel 🙂
ight thx
Lots of awesome resoucres there
If you have any specific questions, though, feel free to ask!
sure thanks!
Dillz, I was wondering if it would be possible to make a Lizzard Wizzard, and call him King Gizzard?
Possible, yes. Whether that'd fly at any specific table is harder to say for sure.
The following content is considered unsuitable for this community:
Posting of AI generated works or content, including but not limited to images and text
From the server's #rules. Be careful in the future of using AI here.
I don't know if that was necessary. Just making you aware!
You should be able to do that. "Races" and classes are totally independant choices.
There are kobolds and dragonkin... maybe also lizardfolk....
Wizards tend to work better with high intelligence, and high constitution. Other scores don't matter a lot.
Strength is fairly useless on a wizard. Dex can help dodge or do ranged attacks. Wisdom helps you avoid problems, and notice issues, and charisma helps you influence people.
sure thank you so much!
Which channel do I put my dnd campaign on?
If you're a DM recruiting players, you'd post in #looking-for-players. If it's a westmarch, it's #looking-for-community. If it involves money, #paid-looking-for-game.
Wherever you post, follow the instructions in #find-a-game.
can i ask a question
say i have an enemy with 20hp and an armor class of 10
if say someone does 10 damage, is that completely nullified?
and if say someone does 15 damage, do i subtract 10?
Not how ac works
ohhh okay
If we’re talking about attack rolls, you’d compare the total to their AC. If it’s equal or greater, you roll for damage and they take the full amount.
Because the hit either misses or just clangs off the armour
If it’s less, they take no damage at all.
alright thank you guys
So if an enemy has 10 ac, a player attacks them and rolls an 11 on their attack roll, it hits. Then they roll for damage
The phrase "meets it beats it" helps you remember (I personally hate the phrase because I've heard it thousands of times)
If the player rolls a 9 then they miss and dont roll damage
D20 + Prof + Strength or Dex, depending weapon type
Np 🙂
and for enemy attacks do i pick like what dice to rooll
casue rn i have 3 enemies that can attack with 1d6
enemy1: 20hp (50ft away) scratch, 1d6(+2 if under 50%hp)
enemy2: 20hp (60ft away) Arrow, 1d8 (-2 if closer than 20ft)
enemy3: 20hp (50ft away) scratch, 1d6(+2 if under 50%hp)
Does this make any sense?
fair
Only a gargantuan creature could hit with that, using a tail or something.
Obviously, you can play how you want, but that isn't how the dice work. Have you read the rules or watched any videos about the game?
a bit
No, attack rolls are d20
ah alright
That’s not how any of it works
It is an interesting idea though
Weapon Effectiveness as well as Weapon Range.
If you’re using D&D Beyond, a number with a + or - in that column is an attack roll. +5, for example.
Unfortunately combat in D&D takes way too long already.
A number with an ability score instead, like 16 WIS, refers to a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw.
Damage is dependent on other types of dice
Generally a d4, d6, or d8, but sometimes a d10 or 12
Simple guide made by me:
D4 for Simple Weapons with Finesse
D6 for Martial weapons with Finesse
D8 for Martial Weapons without Finesse
D10 for Martial Weapons without Finesse with Reach
D12/2D6 for Two-Handed Martial Weapons
so bows would be a d10?
ahhh
It’s less confusing to just check the weapon rules
Refer to Page 149 of the PHB
You can see the available weapons and their damage dice here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#SimpleMeleeWeapons
ok
It really seems like you need to go back to the rules and read how combat works
Yeah
i'm trying. it's just a lot of information
We are gonna end up reprinting the whole book here
and i have a hard time retaining information from reading but it's all good i'll go read the book
You are trying to get it all at once and jamming here with questions
Just stop, take a breath and read it a thru and/or watch the videos

The books are there to be referenced. You don't need to memorize every single rule.

How do you determine a character’s proficiency bonus?
One message removed from a suspended account.
Just attack roll modifiers
One message removed from a suspended account.
Well that’s a very fundamental thing
@remote hamlet what about this one?
hey im new but ive been in a short campaign before that was sadly discontinued and i know somethings but im basically new to it
hi 😁
Hi everyone, I’m new here.
Hi
I’m completely new to dnd, is there anywhere I should start?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
But if you have any specific questions, ask away!
Alright, thanks.
should a newplayer jump straight into a long campaign or should i seek out oneshots and get the feel of the game first?
both are valid options.
my worry for long campaigns is that i might not be feeling "it" and just stop coming to the sessions and this would cause trouble for the group? so i thinking is that i should try out some oneshots first before comitting to a long campaign. @ornate kiln
Sure, then try the game out with a one shot first
thanks.

The basic rules linked above are free, but you can also read them here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules which might be a bit easier to navigate.
thank you
You never need to read all the rules, but having a basic idea of how to make a character (and even making a test character), and glancing at the combat rules can help speed things up, but most things click when actually playing
Then it's the big first challenge- finding a game. You can play in person, making a group with your friends or finding a local group, or you can play online and using the find a group channels here or on other sites.
Im trying to make my character and i thinking of a druid and the race is wood elf and they have a The wood elf's Mask of the Wild trait says: You can attempt to hide even when you are only lightly obscured by foliage, heavy rain, falling snow, mist, and other natural phenomena. Im not from and English speaking country but does that mean they try and hide every time there is some nature they can hide in? Sorry if it is obvious
You can attempt to hide in natural cover, howeve,r it doesn't mean you'll automatically successful (you still need to roll a Stealth check).
But are they better at hiding in natural cover since they attempt to hide in foliage
Yes you’ve just got a better chance at hiding than say a human or a orc because of a natural talent
Okay thanks 🙏
hi
It says that i know druid secret language but when im a elf i can only have 2 languages but do i get an extra language because im a druid?

You get the 2 languages from your race, any from your background and then the Druidic language from your class.
Yes
There should be a table for your class that tells you it, and it should be on your character sheet on dnd beyond
A table? I im trying to find out what it is but can’t find anything
proficiency bonus starts at +2 and goes up by 1 after 4 level ups
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1089904541140521003/1122561989110140979/IMG_3559.png top left of your character sheet
Okay thanks
So are the official campaigns, lost mine, curse of strahd, being held in the same place/world
Um, no (without spoiling Curse of Strahd)
No lost mines is on the sword coast, strahd is ravenloft
So all these worlds have different settings i assume?
Ultimately i wanted to know if a character made for one campaign is suitable for another or not
There are some settings that are totally segregated: Eberron and Dragonlance, for example. Most take place in, or start in, the Forgotten Realms, which is like the "default setting".
Most subclasses, backgrounds and races are not setting-specific, but some are. You'd have to describe the character.
Campaign settings are the worlds that a campaign is set in.
My campaign takes place in the Forgotten Realm setting, although it is possible to cross-over to certain settings like Ravenloft (gothic horror in a demiplane), Spelljammer (D&D in space!), or Planescape (the outer planes!)
Thanks
Talk to your DM as their campaign setting may be a custom (aka homebrew) one.
