I did, but no luck so far, but to be fair i posted not so long ago, i was hoping to find a game to play today, but i'll keep trying to find a place c:
what are yall talking about?
Elgate and Kitatana were talking about how Health points are calculated. Dethin and I were talking about how to find a group
So I played a pregen at a con just yesterday and this is my character.. I want to continue playing him but I have some issues with his lore.
Change the lore
If you're starting a new campaign, there's nothing stopping you from changing up the details of your character
I see, in fact, I think I can post the sheet here
#character-discussion would be a better place
I really like Ginny Di’s tips on roleplaying. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsmjZYZs1ps3uBojbWiYIAIpuoAmJTRks Also see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU7e_2em4BM.
I like writing in the metaphorical voice of certain characters, to get a better sense of what they might say and/or how they’d say it. In that playlist is a questionnaire; answering those with your character in mind can help. You can also just imagine scenarios and how your character would react to them. We’re asked in our ordinary lives to put ourselves in others’ shoes in an abstract way, but roleplay asks you to do it much more intently and intensely. If it’s difficult, that’s because it’s unusual, so practice doing it in low-stakes ways. Eventually you’ll grow more comfortable with it.
I collated a bunch of options here: https://tinyurl.com/TTRPG-LFG
One other aspect that I like to highlight: if you just play as yourself but with a fantasy job in a fantasy setting, that is a valid way of roleplaying. It might be to everyone's expectation, but at my tables, it absolutely is.
If your fighter basically just has the same personality of you, but you try to imagine how you would react when dealing with a Gelatinous Cube and then describing what happens next, that's roleplaying in my books and I welcome it at my tables.
Never once in my life have I played dnd. The campaign in my school isn't taking any new members. I need a small group to join so I can get myself regulated with the game.
I already have a character made.

#find-a-game has everything you need to start your search, including:
• Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
• Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
• Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Thank you!
What spell resists magic missile?
Shield.
Thx.
Thers No, spell that Can resists nearly All spells?
Hehe ok thx
😜😜
Does Counterspell count?
Invulnerability
That'll protect you from all damage from spells, but not from all spells.
Ok thx guys 🔥🙏
Ill look into it.
Need to get protected from mm and chromatic orb
Good point well put
Shield is a good low-level choice, then.
Or Absorb Elements
Thx again
That'll help for Chromatic Orb, but not Magic Missile.
That's why you have Shield. It's a reaction, so you choose which would be more advantageous
If you want to prep both, sure.
Think Iwe got what i need 😀😀
hey, I haven't played dnd in like a few years, when I did, I never really roleplayed. Do you guys have any tips because I feel like if I try to rp ill suck at it and be kinda embarresed lol.
https://youtu.be/qmABhOgcEnQ how not to RP guide
https://youtu.be/uBsG90wfC4M how to role play your traits
I answered a similar question earlier today, actually. #dnd-newcomers message
woah :0 thanks
Why hello folks am some random dude who thought it would be cool to learn the Does and donts of the DnD but I'm quite honestly left pondering on a little detail...
A friend of mine has agreed to DnD with me but only if I gather a crew to play with, and I'm left pondering about if that's what I should worry about or if I should try and get ahold of the rules first
Expecting for the answer to be the rules but it appears they only dwell within a physical book, so I shall also ask if that is correct or not?
Dang I'm leaving quite the wall of text here lol
What is your question? It's a bit difficult trying to parse through that amount of text.
Do I get ppl to play with or a good understanding of the rules
And are the rules exclusively in a physical book?
That's two three questions.
- Sure, D&D is a group collaborative game, typically with one DM (Dungeon Master) and 3 to 5 players.
- Yes, the more you know about the rules the better but you don't need to memorize them (the rule books are there for a reference).
- If you're starting out, everything you need is in the free Basic Rules.
Basic Rules PDF
https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf
Basic Rules on D&D Beyond
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Oh that's great thanks
Think of the Basic Rules as a video game demo. If you want the full experience you need to buy the books, such as the Player's Handbook (aka PHB).
Ah I see
The Player's Handbook should be the first source book to buy.
Aight useful, I just waltzed in thinking it'd be easy come easy go but dang physical books, you guys mean serious business lol
That would indeed be handier
Remember to check your local library, you might be able to borrow one!
Also DnDBeyond allows you to buy just specific races, items, spells, etc. a la carte. Whatever you purchase is discounted if you ever do buy the full book where that content comes from.
Wait so like DnDBeyond is the name of the rulebook or is it a different thing
Oh wait bruh okay i get it
So is that a thing to buy parts of it?
No DnDBeyond is the official digital toolset for D&D - but they sell the books in a digital format.
These can be used with their tools like the character builder, encounter builder, and Avrae Discord bot.
I would say the Players Handbook - physical or digital - is a good investment if you like the game
Are these online services all one time purchases?
The books are one time purchase. DnDBeyond has subscriptions for unlcoking unlimited character slots (for digital characters) and for enabling content sharing.
So are digital characters just a way to visualize your dnd character or are they more than that?
It may be helpful to review the DnDBeyond website: https://www.dndbeyond.com/
Honestly I gotta stop bothering y'all and just look it up myself bruh
It’s another, arguably easier way to build your characters. I prefer downloading a fillable pdf character sheet myself.
Again DnDBeyond just provides digital tools to help with playing D&D
Don't apologize, that's the entire point of this channel is to answer new players' questions.
Especially if you prefer physical books, since you can only use digital content purchased on dndbeyond for character building.
unless you get really good with DnDBeyond's homebrew tools to recreate your physical book stuff on it
but that's unlikely
lol
Ah welp, guess ima go study the does and donts and see if I can get player's Handbook copy for myself, thanks for the info people
Again, the free Basic Rules has everything you need to start. You don't need to buy the Player's Handbook just yet.
Yup
question
im doing my character application and i got a list to choose from
dice set, dragonchess set, playing cardset, and three-dragon ante set
what do these even mean?
They're just various in-game leisure games that has no direct effect on the D&D game itself.
is there like a physical appearance it does for the post or something or dice?
also how does one change their display name on the site?
Dice set and playing cards are exactly as they sound, and you can have them look how you want. Dragonchess I believe is just chess with dragon themed pieces, but three-dragon ante is a specific game in the world
And honestly you can make them really look like anything you want, or make up something else similar with allowance from your DM
is there a way to change ur name on the site or does it have to be ur email?
You can change your name, yeah. Are you on PC or mobile?
pc
You should be able to click your name and get "edit server profile" as an option
On PC you might need to choose like edit user or something?
i hit edit profile and i try changing the name but it still is the default email lol
Edit profile should have edit server profile somewhere
so aside from the PBP aspect of things
is there an actual like tabletop section where folks use their character sheets and such
cuz i just made my character through the website
This discord doesn't host games, but you can check out #looking-for-players and see if any if those look good and contact the person who posted them. Usually they'll have their own discord to join and work out play from there
On which site?
Oh, I thought you meant changing the name here. My apologies
when you said "Character Application" previously, do you just mean that you're creating a character on D&D Beyond?
There’s a whole lot more than two. The internet is a vast and varied place.
im talking about d&d beyond and the character application like what beyond has. where u pick ur race, class etc. i already made the character.
Maybe if you shared the URL to the site you're speaking of we can have a more clear conversation
No this is the official D&D Discord and DnDBeyond is associated with it.
So to change your DnDBeyond username, you'll need to go to https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/bugs-support/65846-display-name-change-request-thread-v2 and post that you would like to change your display name.
As weird as it sounds... I have been in the server for a little and I still don't understand what or why to do...
Well what do you want to do with D&D?

Phew finally got in had a previous discord acct with my phone number was a struggle😝.. how do I go about trying to find a group of beginners to play and finding a DM with some experience to help through what would only be my 2nd attempt to play in about 15 yrs.
#find-a-game can get you started.
I will give that another shot just wasn't sure if that was the right channel to use that command in since I didn't see any other posts
Thank you
Does anyone know about the dragon warrior campaign
Perhaps you're thinking of Dragonlance?
I'm sorry I don't recognise the name. If you have more information and think it is an official module, then we might be able to figure it out
I’m don’t think so but the full name is Dragon Warriors - Gallows Wood it’s a book set but I’m joining a campaign on it and I don’t know much about it
Never heard of it.
Looks like a TTRPG system from the 80s, should be fun
I think you'll be hard pressed finding people here who have a good grasp of it, It's barely even discoverable on the first page of google
https://writeups.letsyouandhimfight.com/traveller/dragon-warriors/
Is a round, after your whole team attacks or after your team and the enemies attack? Is it like one person attacks then the enemy, or the whole team attacks then the enemies attack?
One round is six seconds. Everyone has a turn in each round.
Read the Order of Combat:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#TheOrderofCombat
Initiative determines the attack order during combat:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Initiative
Initiative determines the order of turns during combat. When combat starts, every participant makes a Dexterity check to determine their place in the initiative order. The DM makes one roll for an entire group of identical creatures, so each member of the group acts at the same time.
The DM ranks the combatants in order from the one with the highest Dexterity check total to the one with the lowest. This is the order (called the initiative order) in which they act during each round. The initiative order remains the same from round to round.
If a tie occurs, the DM decides the order among tied DM-controlled creatures, and the players decide the order among their tied characters. The DM can decide the order if the tie is between a monster and a player character. Optionally, the DM can have the tied characters and monsters each roll a d20 to determine the order, highest roll going first.
No.
If theres 3 on my team and 3 on their team, its not one team does all their attacks then the other? Its every creature rolls and its like a list of who goes first so it looks random like us, them them, us, them, us?
Soemthing like that
Yes
So if I use a spell that lasts one round, does that mean it lasts until its my turn again or until the first person starts again?
It depends on the spell's description.
Then it lasts until the caster's next turn in the next round.
what exactly defines challenge rating, like i obviously know it means the difficulty of the enemy, but how is it decided and like what is the rating based off of, my initial idea was the recommended average of the parties level, but im not sure
ohok
thanks a lot
If a spell costs one bonus action does that mean there’s someway you have to be able to get one bonus action or it counts as the bonus action so no matter who you play you can use the spell and then attack or dodge or whatver
Every round on your turn, you get one bonus action. You can spend this action on anything that takes up a bonus action, such as casting a spell with a casting time of 1 bonus action, or you can choose to not use your bonus action
Every round on your turn, you get one action, one bonus action, and movement. Your reaction also recharges at the start of each of your turns
So I can’t use a reaction everytime an enemy attacks me?
Like if 3 enemies use their turns to attack me I can only react to one?
Well to react to any of them you’d need an ability or spell that costs your reaction and is triggered by having an enemy attack you
And once you’ve used your reaction you must wait until your next turn for it to recharge
So if two enemies in a row attack I’m screwed on the second
Assuming you take your reaction against the first to use something like the shield spell then no you can’t use it again on the second
Is there ANY way I can use the lightning bolt spell as a Swashbuckler
I thought maybe cuz there’s things like the magic initiate feat and arcane trickster there might be some way
Arcane trickster is a different subclass
You can only take one subclass
Magic initiate only lets you choose 2 cantrips and 1 first level spell
Lightning bolt is 3rd level
you can make it look however you want with dm permission
What about just a rogue being able to use lightning bolt
If you can get a ring of spell storing then you maybe able to cast it
Yeah
Rogue-Wizard-Swashbuckler
Probably weird but I wanna sword fight and be sneaky and use lightning bolt sometimes
Swashbuckler is a type of rogue
Ye can I not do Rogue Wizard Swashbuckler
You can
I’m just saying that it’s technically just rogue-wizard
And swashbuckler is the rogue subclass you choose
I can’t gain level in both at the same time right? I have to choose Rogue or Wizard everytime I level up?
Yeah
If this is your first time I wouldn’t recommend multiclassing
You could go for a bladesinger wizard or a hexblade warlock
Im so deep into rogue I don’t even want to attempt anything else it was so hard for me to learn it theres too much stuff except for weapons really only 3 swords? Interesting
1,000 spells and three swords
I’m assuming the second class doesn’t get an archetype right
Yea in the handbook they call it archetype
Ah yeah different classes have different names for their subclasses
So it really is playing two classes at the same time? there’s no drawback besides only being able to to level up one class at a time?
Sorcerers have sorcerous origins, warlocks have pacts, rogues have archetypes
Yep the only drawback is the levelling
You can’t pick like I want Wizards proficiency in darts, and rogues proficiencies in simple weapons tho right?
You get both I believe
Read the multiclassing rules but I think you get all the stuff from both classes
What about the hit points and everything
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options rules for multiclassing
You take five levels fighter, you get 1d10 hp
You take a sixth level in rogue, you roll the d8 for that level instead
I don’t understand the hit points
It says I gain the new classes hit points, does that mean rogue + sorcerers hp or just sorcerers hp
If you take the level in say rogue you get the hp from rogue
If you take the level in sorcerer you get the hp from sorcerer
Say your a lvl 5 rogue every lvl is d8+con if you then take a lvl on wizard for that lvl you get d6+con
So its whichever class I last took a level in?
When you level up you get the additional hp from the class you took the level in
I don’t get it was I right? I saw a video that made me even more confused
If I’m a level 3 rogue then I get level one into sorcerer, will my health be 1d6+con now?
The increase to your HP is 1d6+CON. so hit die wise you would have 3d8 & 1d6.
Your health increases on each level
Your hp doesn’t stay the same throughout the game
Okay so I got 9 hp as a Rogue, then I level up Sorcerer so I roll 1d6 I land a 4 + 1 for my con so now I have 14?
Yep
If you then level up in rogue next level you get 1d8+con extra hp
You got 9 HP at level 3 or was that just an example?
Thats level one
Perfect, yeah thats correct.
You only start off with one class tho right then second level you can add another
Is the rule for hit points the same as hit dice? Use the hit dice of the class you last leveled up?
Yes you use the hit dice of the class you are leveling up in
What does optional mean when everything is optional cuz the dm always has to approve it
It means not all DMs and groups play with that rule - they may not allow multiclassing.
I will say that that is fairly rare from what I’ve seen
Specifically 'optional' (and 'variant') rules mean "The design of the game assumes this rule is not used by default but the DM may choose to allow it"
As opposed to the core (non optional/variant) rules, which means "The design of the game assumes this rule is used by default but the DM may choose to not allow it"
Optional/variant rules are opt-in
Core rules are opt-out
But they choose to allow everything like they can say longswords aren’t allowed right or light armor even tho its not supposed to be optional
Again, it's not about what the DM does, it's about what the design of the game assumes
The design of the game assumes that longswords and light armor are allowed; those are core rules
The design of the game assumes multiclassing and flanking aren't allowed (this is why you'll almost never see a rule that interacts with multiclassing or flanking outside of the rules themselves)
Point of clarity on optional vs variant rule, because I've used both terms
Optional rules are added to the game
Variant rules replace a core rule
The DM can do anything, but the design of the game operates under some assumptions because the game cannot be designed for every possible decision by every possible DM
Like an official mod
What does tht second sentence mean ”You hurl a mote of fire at a creature or object within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 fire damage.” I thought hurling the fire WAS the ranged spell attack
Mechanically you roll for a spell attack (roll a d20 and add your spell attack modifier and any other bonuses).
If it beats the target creature's armor class, the spell hits.
If it hits, the target takes 1d10 damage.
The "You hurl a mote of fire at..." is just flavor text describing what it might look like.
More like an optional game setting such as "no respawns" or "new game plus" or "hardcore mode"
But wouldn’t it say “Making”
When it says “Make” it sounds like its telling you now make a ranged attack
The first sentence is discrete and descriptive - it's describing what the action looks like
The second sentence is discrete and prescriptive - it's telling you what to do
Please understand there is a difference between flavor text vs game mechanics text. The game mechanics is to make a ranged spell attack and if it hits it does damage. Flavor text just helps folks imagine what the spell is doing.
And what Davyd said
Whats the smallest simplest explanation of the game I can tell my friend to convince him to try it
Can't speak for convincing them, but the as for explanations I'd go with "D&D is a heroic fantasy game that combines story telling, roleplay, and rules to create a shared world that you can adventure in and explore together"
I’d just tell them to try this.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
Do you have to make arcana checks when casting spells?
Nope. Some spells may require specific saves or checks, tho. They’ll tell you in the description.
Besides that the requirements are having an appropriate spell-slot to spend so you can cast the spell, and having the necessary components the spell requires.
Arcana is your academic knowledge of magic rather than your ability to use magic
where would I go to find a group to join?
#find-a-game can get you started.
So homebrew is where you modify dnd rules right? And I am probably extremely stupid on this one but playing your own made campaign rather than someone else's one isnt considered homebrew, right?
To the first question: yes.
I'd agree with the second, but I don't think everyone would.
IMO, the term homebrew applies purely to game mechanics, which would exclude any narrative elements.
(After all: even when running published adventures, no two groups will ever have an identical narrative.)
You usually hear the phrases "Homebrew rules" or "Homebrew subclass", but on occasion you do hear "Homebrew setting" when referring to the actual world of the campaign
I've even heard "homebrew campaign" before, too.
But that's the problem with a community-defined term: there's no written definition to rely on.
Hmm alr
Anyways: I have played DnD irl like 4 years ago around 5 sessions, and 3 sessions recently (1 a oneshot and other 2 that I dont take seriously cuz the DM is unexperienced ah) and I am feeling fairly strong. I wanna be a DM. I have created some kind of maps and a story line 4 years ago. I didn't really know dnd rules existed back then so it is kinda all homebrew. Do I use that or find a begginer friendly campaign online? Also: can you recommend any short reads for preparation (up to 30 normal book pages)?
That’s up to you. I recommend DMing some pre-written adventures to see how they’re built, but you can absolutely get started with making your own.
I don't imagine the rules themselves would give you much trouble in using the maps or storyline you created.
The Basic Rules are available for free (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules), but they do involve a good deal of reading. You can also check out YouTube for shorter rules breakdowns.
There's a couple good articles here, too, to get you started:
Special guest Mike Shea shares tips on running your first Dungeons & Dragons game.
(And another example of the term "homebrew" being used to apply to narrative. 😅)
There's lots of other DM articles here, too: https://www.dndbeyond.com/tag/dungeon-master-tips
If you do want an actual book, The Lazy DM is pretty well-regarded (and written by the author of that first article above).
https://slyflourish.com/lazydm/
enemies
Well their roles and goals and motivations don't need to change, at least.
But yeah, they'd need appropriate statblocks.
Whether you find an existing monster (and possibly reflavor it) or homebrew it yourself.
What is the best race for rouge class
The one you want to! But in all seriousness, the way 5e is designed, there really is no best/worst race and class combo
Ok thx
Tieflings or Gensai to get the red skin
Glad someone put the newspaper emoji
Okay so how do I actually like, DM well, cause I feel like I'm doing SOMETHING wrong constantly
I wanna pitch a Granblue Fantasy campaign setting to people but I have no clue how to even actually DM
In the end it's an equal amount of practice, preparation, and just having fun with it
Can you explain a little more? What kinds of things do you think you're doing wrong? In what areas are you trying to improve?
Keep it simple to start with, make a one shot or 2 in your setting. At its roots being a DM is just telling a story where the PCs are the characters in it
okay... how do I DO a one-shot, cause its just one session right, are there any like rules of thumb I should follow to keep things quick?
The only difference is that the one-shot is just one session (probably around three hours long) with one combat
It's a self contained adventure.
There's a few tips here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1300-one-shot-adventures-what-they-are-why-we-love-them
If you have more questions about DMing check out #dm-discussion
I think the key to being a good dm is flexibility and not being afraid to force the story along if needed
Well, the thing is that the players control the pacing and that they're co-storytellers, not just the DM.
Don't be surprised if a 'one shot' actually turns into a two-or-three session affair, particularly if you are new. You haven't failed if that happens - think of it more like a "one shot" is like setting up for a traditional board game. You can put it aside and come back to it if the game is taking too long - but once the game is over, the pieces go away and the story ends.
All the dms Ive thought were good could adapt to what the players were doing
and if something was impossible they just made the check impossible or whatever
you could try it but youd probably die etc
how is expertise calculated?
expertise is like proficiency but doubled
ic
So many new players trying to get into DnD, so little DMs
Wonder what’s causing the shortcomings
It isn't that scary behind the screen
Yes, big murderize scary who’s smile strikes fear
Because DMing takes a lot of time and effort to prepare before each session.
DM requires work and most people would rather play
We always take one shot breaks so our dm can play
Yeah but I feel like amount of DM is dropping, or is it just a increasing player base?

Well I’ll move on
Become the DM you want to see
I don’t think I could afford all that ice cream
Run a game the players will bring the ice cream
Probably more players joining the game than the number of players volunteering to become DMs.
I’d be tempted to DM, but I’m still very new
All experienced DMs were new too when they first started out playing D&D.
You can't get better if you don't try.
I think part of the problem is I just find friends and there like yeah i like dnd too and now we have a group and i dont care about looking for other games
I could dm but finding people is exhausting
Local game store?
What is your horror story regarding that?
Ive gamed at enough Ive seen them go out of business and its way more comfortable at my house.
Oh, thought ya meant more like they were more toxic, or derpy
Nah its more id rather convert friends into playing stuff I like and im kind of capped out already on free time
i could maybe do something discord based but I prefer in person
I’d love to do in store but there arnt many in my state, the nearest one for me is two or three cities over
yeah and tbh I hate like i feel like i have to rent or buy something when i can do it for free at home
I’d be up to play with ya over Discord if ya are up for it (With Owlbear as VTT)
unfortunately im hella busy this summer with work and personal stuff
Try libraries book shops anywhere nerds hang out you may find dnd games, I found an IRL game at a shop that sells goth stuff
Yeah but I live in a neighborhood surrounded by farmland, pretty sure this isn’t DnD territory
Sounds like you do have your locals who you can play with. Yeah, I'd say library is probably your best bet.
For our libraries, you can book out "study rooms" which makes it a bit more comfortable.
I've tried D&D at bars, but typically they're too loud; that said, your local joints might be on the quieter side so maybe that's worthwhile. Again, there's the assumption you'll drop money on drinks and food so maybe that's out of the question.
frankly its just easier to find friends and try and convert then
I feel lucky to have a group thats a year into a campaign
Man, i need to ask my old rpg group if they maybe wanna run a few sessions during the holidays
Been a while since we done that
If 3 years means a while
I do have a question, how does leveling when multiclassing work
Each subclass class levels up separately. So you can be a level 3 fighter (with all the abilities of a level 3 fighter) and a level 6 monk (with all the abilities of a level 6 monk) for a total level of 9
Oh that's a typo, my bad
So for ex. If i have a monk fighter, using the monk part levels up the monk and vice versa?
Or does it depend on the DM?
When you level up you choose which class to put a level in. There's no "using" a certain class over the other: you're both a monk and a fighter at the same time.
Understandable, thanks a bundle
So (continuing this example) if your party is level 9 and meet whatever the criteria is for leveling up, your wizard friend might go from a level 9 wizard to a level 10 wizard.
You could choose to become either a:
-level 3 fighter level 7 monk
Or
-level 4 fighter level 6 monk
Also bear in mind players max out at lv20 (total of all classes)
So there is an inherent tradeoff to consider
Yeah yeah I'm aware of that
im new to dnd could someone give me like a dnd tutorial

hello
I have a question about the dual personalities trait
Do you put both sets of character traits on your character sheet or just one and how would you recomend it be organized
There is no best way, you should lay it out in the way that makes the most sense to you, and can be accessed most easily
Ok thank you
Is it possible to play the starter set by myself?
Possible, sure, but the game isn't designed for it generally, nor are any of the Starter Set adventures.
D&D is a collaborative group game, typically with one Dungeon Master (DM) and about three to five players.
there are a few 1-player ttrpgs out there you might find fun
can an artificer replicate a magic tattoo?
Yes.
Such as which ones if you don't mind my asking
Cantrip and 1st level spell tattoos are common magic items, and “Alternatively, you can choose the magic item from among the common magic items in the game, not including potions or scrolls.”
That’s one you probably want to talk to your DM about first, though.
There’s a lot of questions around that which aren’t really covered by the rules.
Yeah true, it’s kind of a loophole honestly
Since the rules says no potions or scrolls, the intention is probably no consumables at all
i dont play them im afraid

If you’re persuading someone but you’re lying do you use deception instead of persuasion?
That’s up to the DM.
deception
In general, players don’t choose when or what to roll.
(But I’d agree that deception is more likely in this scenario.)
ive had instances where the npc rolls a contested insight check depending on if the lie is outrageous or not
I'm looking to play a core module or even a oneshot, you can't find those in the "find a game" channels.
Just to gauge my interest in DND and re-familiarize with the rules.
Do you lose concentration if you attack or just if you get attacked?
Not by making an attack, no.
No. You only lose concentration when:
Casting another spell that requires concentration. You lose concentration on a spell if you cast another spell that requires concentration. You can’t concentrate on two spells at once.
Taking damage. Whenever you take damage while you are concentrating on a spell, you must make a Constitution saving throw to maintain your concentration. The DC equals 10 or half the damage you take, whichever number is higher. If you take damage from multiple sources, such as an arrow and a dragon’s breath, you make a separate saving throw for each source of damage.
Being incapacitated or killed. You lose concentration on a spell if you are incapacitated or if you die.
Also, you can end your concentration anytime without using an action

If you’re asking about online play specifically, this article covers some of the more popular options.

Custom background says I can choose two tool proficiencies does sailing ship count?
Or would I just say water vehicles
My family just started playing, ive gone DM, jumping in the deep end here a bit. How do you deal with a situation where you have say 4 party members, theres a strong lever, the tough barb tries to move out, rolls a 11, fails. The gnome then says oh let me try, rolls a 18. So that seems weird to me.
Further, if all 4 party members roll, someone is going to get a good roll.
Do you say no, only 1 person gets to try? Or take the avg of all the rolls? How do you not have them just steamroll everything through weight of numbers on the rolls?
Do they maybe need a min str 14 to be allowed to roll?
If one passes the check then it works
Sometimes the dumb guy says something smart
Alternatively you as the dm could allow the gnome to “succed” but impose another impediment like the lever breaks if you really dont want them opening the door or something
Dnd parties are “heros” so theyll likely succeed on a lot of stuff unless you as the DM make it hard if you want
Just because they roll an 11 you could say that instead of taking seconds they end up spending a minute pulling the lever. I also recommend keeping in mind "fail forward" - don't ask for rolls if you don't want failure, and if failure happens, look for how to keep things moving forward (but maybe now with complications).
Yeah, sailing ships would count as water vehicles.
I think I just say “water vehicles) cuz it says choose one tool proficiency from the sample backgrounds and Sailor just says water vehicles but I’m gonna write down sailing
So when all 6 are standing at a wall with a magic puzzle diagram, they all roll perception or something, 100pc the party is always going to pass.?
Why would i ever ask anyone to roll for something, when all the other chars will then just roll anyway if they failed?
I guess sometimes one of the 6 players will roll a 1 negating all the other rolls, maybe?
That's a common problem actually, it's called skill dogpiling
Well now it has a name I can google common solutions to it I suppose, thankyou. Seems an obvious flaw in the game design to me but as i said ive only played 1 round
Its up to you. I dont know what you want the outcome of the decision to be but you can always make the check really hard. Or you can make it impossible but let them try and regardless of what they roll they dont pass. “You study the wall and gain some insight, but it doesnt make any sense to anyone” etc
One way around this is to know when to call for a roll and when not to. If a player rolls but you didn't call for it, you can say you didn't ask for one and it doesn't count. But also you can limit who can make a roll in a given situation for narratively plausible reasons. Here's a good video explaining that in more detail than I could squeeze into one Discord message: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=canhaxHlFg8
Is the witch beyond the witchlight gold for a begginer DM?
I would say more intermediate.
im farly new to D&D and im looking to play more but not to sure how to find groups can i get some help please
Check out #find-a-game
@cobalt frigate not really understanding where to post it at
Read the instructions under #looking-for FAQ
hey does anyone wanna play dnd on vr chatt
rather than make a post, you're probably wanting to reply to other people's game listings in #looking-for-players
Sorry, you are looking for an online game to join right?
@glass summit yes i am i have me and a friend looking to play more and im not seeing any listing in the looking-for-players
thats very strange, tbh I have never used this discord for joining games but what you should be seeing are a bunch of generated posts by the Monodrone bot...
Post in #looking-for-players , not here.
do u know how to type in it i dont have perms
read the instructions in #find-a-game to understand how to make a game posting
so general question i have some books on dnd beyond would i have to get the books again on roll 20
Yes.
They're two separate sites and businesses.
However, you don't need to rebuy the books on Roll20 because you can connect D&D Beyond with Roll20 via the Beyond20 web extension.
The shortsword says 1d6 piercing does that mean I can only stab with it? Why wouldn’t it say slashing
It's a stabbing weapon.
Look up the Roman gladius — it's a shortsword — and the method of attacking was thrusting/stabbing.
A very specific sword
Yes.
Shortswords are piercing weapons...
Narratively you can describe your longsword stabbing an enemy. It's flavour and its free.
Does it say somewhere Rogues are proficient in finesse weapons? I couldv’e swore I saw it somewhere
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#ClassFeatures9
Weapons: Simple weapons, hand crossbows, longswords, rapiers, shortswords
It doesn’t mean I can’t slash tho right it just only does a damage type called piercing? Like I can still chop an arm off
That's narrative flavour. Flavour is free.
That said if a monster is resistant/immune to piercing damage then the shortsword's damage would be affected regardless if you say you slash with it.
I’m using Magic Initiate, I can get two cantrips I know eldritch blast is one of them what should I do for the other one? It has to be Warlock
Do you have any at least 60% roleplay and no more than 40% combat campaigns for starter DMs?
Also i have King's festival printed from 5 years ago. Might I as well run that? I've never really read it. Is it begginer friendly?
There's no fixed percentage, it's about what your players will enjoy
Oh, I misread your question. I thought you were asking if a campaign has to be a certain percentage
No, I was asking for a campaign
I would say that's more how you run the game vs the module itself. Though there are some that feature more roleplay (like Wild Beyond the witchlight, which can be run through with no combat at all if you so choose) but again, you can run them how you like, and make it more combat heavy
Wait, is it paid?
If you mean, do you need to purchase a book to run it? Yeah. You could always check your local library
What are the ways Rogue can become proficient in a scimitar or finesse
From when on am I gonna find that in my library
Have you checked? Many libraries have d&d books
Never seen lol
Oh shoot soz
There are also a couple of free adventures on d&d beyond. Lost mines of phandelver and the frozen sick
Lots of free/ pay what you want on DMsguild as well
Talk with your DM and scimitar is the same as a short sword so should allow it
Can you just recommend one more rp based and Ill go with that? I cant choose lmao
Lost Mine of Phandelver it is
Are you after a free adventure that is rp based or are you asking if lost mines is heavy rp?
I am after a free adventure that is rp based. And begginer friendly.
Lost mines has a bit of both combat and rp your best of just downloading it and reading through the whole thing to get a feel for it
screw reading
alr I will tho
Unfortunately it’s a game that does involve reading and understanding rules and the campaign
lol ik
maple
Hi
Material components that aren’t consumed by the spell can be replaced by arcane focuses or component pouches, so yes.
Isn't it those that list a gold cost
Both
Material components that have a gold cost, and ones that the spell mentions are consumed cannot be replaced by an arcane focus / component pouch
@harsh fjord that was perfect actually, thankyou
Does heaven exist in the game? Or an equivalent?
Your DM decides that
Whether its real or not, is there some place people say the good guys go after they die
No like really that’s a part of the dm’s world building
It’s a certified ask your dm moment
Surely they mention the after life in official games
There are afterlifes in many settings yes. Usually the outer planes. But it can depend a lot on the setting: here's some info on Forgotten Realms (one of the most commonly used settings) afterlife https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Afterlife
Heaven's closest equivalent in D&D's cosmology would be the Upper Planes, where celestials come from: Arcadia, Mount Celestia, Bytopia, Elysium, the Beastlands, Arborea, and Ysgard.
'hell' would be the lower planes, like the Abyss (demons), Hell (devils), but also Acheron, Gehenna, Hades, tarterus, Pandemonium.
Remember that there aren't "official games", just "official settings"
How a DM runs an official setting still may vary
Also, I am hosting a campaign for 4-5 players but I already got 10 that are interested.
Should I only pick 5 or host 2 instances?
With time conflicts and just like... the general unreliability of hosting campaigns with random people, I'd be surprised if all 10 actually stuck around.
Fair
Its up to you to decide what you think you can handle, but personally I think running 2 campaigns at once would be far too much to handle, especially since we are in the newcomers channel so I have to assume you are new to DMing
well fair lol
alr thx for the tip 👍
What happens when an npc tries to deceive you? Their deception vs your some passive check?
If the playerthinks they're being deceived they would ask to do an Insight check.
deception vs insight. which one is passive (if any at all), depends a bit on the circumstance
Npc déception vs pc insight
Passive Insight is DM's call.
like, is the player actively looking for a lie? insight check. Is the player just listening, use passive insight.
And passives are 10 + modifier?
Lol
im looking to join a campaign and i read the join game section and it doesnt really specify which chat to post the looking for dm/community in, can someone tell me please
You go there and type in the thread of the post
oh it wasnt an option on my chat list ig i didnt have the correct roles clicked, thank you
Np
Are hand rolled stats a bad thing?
Not really, but I hate them personally
Point buy is superior
Not bad, but making them outside of the DM's view means you probably won't get to use them as is.
they are neither good or bad, but many people dislike them for a couple of good reasons, while others love the gambling aspect
That's a bummer. Her stats rolled really well
subsequent turns, what does it mean?
Later turns
Passive kobold check
I kind of wish 5e didn’t have assumed math that breaks if you don’t use standard array but I supposed that other additions had the same issue and it’s something that just comes from having stats that improve over the course of the game
When does weapon weight matter
Hello I’m new here and just wanted to say hello, gonna use the resources in the ping but excited to learn with y’all
Depends if your campaign uses encumbrance.
I enjoy the risk a little. Makes it spicy
Thank you. I was starting to feel really dumb there for a second
So it would be a matter of finding like minded people...which is difficult
Every response I've gotten has been from ppl that aren't beginner friendly and point buy
It's no biggie I'll figure it out ^_^
Point buy tends to be fair for all the players. Not everyone is lucky with their rolls.
Point-buy combined with the new standard of racial stat bonuses not being linked to specific abilities provides a nice amount of flexibility when it comes to choosing what you want to play.
Mage hand or minor illusion?
Both is good
Is it possible for someone to have more than one feat at a time?
Yes, every time you get an ASI you can take a feat instead
A what
Also good to keep in the back of your head. Technically feats are an optional rule. While it's quite common place, you may run into dms that don't allow them.
ASI is Ability Score Improvement
Ability score increase, the class you take determines when you get one
If a feat says I need wisdom 13 or higher, but I have 10 + 3 modifier, I don’t count the 3 right?
I'm sorry, what do you mean by modifier?
There's the ability score (maximum 20) and the ability modifier (maximum 5)
If a feat says you need a 13 in WIS to take it, it's talking about the ability score
Your ability score determines your ability modifier, and I don't think you add them up anywhere
So the modifier is just for skill rolls?
Yes, modifiers are for die rolls
Skill rolls, attack rolls, saving throws among other things
the ability score doesn't come up much during gameplay
The modifier isn’t a modifier to the ability score

I will be your dnd frand
What is Homebrew? I've seen it on a couple posts but have no idea what it is or means.
Non-official content made by players and DMs.
essentially, anything made by Wizards of the Coast is "official"
Everything else is "homebrew"
Oh okay thank you!
Is it best to ask about class stuff here if you're new or in character discussion
I was thinking of doing a vague port of something I liked
Not sure if I should have put it in character disc
Hi... is it okay to ask here for campaign mates on a new Fantasy Grounds 5e campaign I've signed up for? Session Zero is Saturday at 12pm PST via StartPlaying. DM me if interested. Don't worry... I'll be the Cleric.
You can make a post in #looking-for-players
how common are asian based games? I think i may face trouble attending games as I'm in asia and most of the posts in #looking-for-players are in est
im a student and getting up at 5am to play dnd doesn't really work for me
I wouldn't be surprised if most games are in North America.
Tbh a lot of things mainly only happy in North America
Spread your net wide and look on Facebook Reddit roll20 etc
da hell?
Willing means they want it to happen to them, they consent
This is so confusing
What's confusing about it?
I thought willing creature is just a creature who have brain
nope
catnap is powerful, as it gives you the ability to short rest in 10 min instead of an hour
its not an offensive spell though
Are there any powerful spell that send any creatures to Unconcious condition?
as a Wizard
I hope this question doesn't come across as rude, but is english your first language? D&D can be quite hard to grasp if you don't speak english primarily as it operates under what's called a 'natural language principle'. What this means is "The words mean what they are commonly understood to mean in everyday speech unless the rules give a word a specific meaning"
Nope, English is not my first language
yeah, this is why people are rightly eager for localised rules, the language barrier can be tough
In D&D, as mentioned, willing means
"ready, eager, or prepared to do something"
Sleep with upcast can only do this?
This being?
Oh sorry
Cast "Sleep" on opponent but use higher level
If you want to incapacitate enemies hypnotic pattern works
All spells can be cast using higher level spell slots
They only get improved or additional effects if the spell says so
You can check Sleep to see if it has any improved or additional effects
I believe sleep does
Given how powerful a condition unconscious is (relatively speaking) I think it scales fine
how do you usually go about choosing skills for your character?
Generally you think about what you want your character to be good at and pick the skills that reflect that from the options given by your race/background/class etc
Is this 5e? https://files.catbox.moe/8iw9na.png
No - that is not a 5e character sheet (also it's using d6's for dice rolls).
You can download pre-filled character sheets here: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Also it has links to download blank character sheets.
I like using DnDBeyond personally myself but use whatever makes the most sense and works well for you and your group.
What are they playing? Its dnd but is that a certain edition or did they make some stuff up
It doesn't have to be D&D. Infact, if it's a d6 system, it's very probably not.
This channel is a D&D discussion channel. If you want to discuss non-D&D topics or ask questions unrelated to D&D, please use #non-dnd-topics
Its d&d
It's not D&D
They are playing a ttrpg, dnd is a ttrpg not all ttrpgs are dnd
Is multiclassing okay when starting out at level one?
So, you can only multiclass once you have multiple levels. A level 2 character can have one level of two different classes.
I.e. multiclassing is done by taking levels in multiple classes.
Okay, that explains that calculation
Early multiclassing is not always a good idea. Depending on the combination, there's usually a sweet spot where it's worth investing in a different class. For example, it's not usually a good idea to multiclass a martial before level 5, when they get their first Extra Attack.
I would recommend against multiclassing as a newcomer to the game
it introduces a fair bit of complexity
What if, I'm multiclassing a Warlock with a rogue class?
Even more complicated 🙂
Getting more into #character-discussion territory, but as a general rule avoid multiclassing when you're new to the game
Davyd is right, usually multiclassing makes things harder, or at least more complex. Instead, maybe look at the subclasses of Warlock, and think how you can build them into your sneaky warlock.
Ho boy, I'm gonna have to go back to the drawing board then
I assure you, you'll only need 1/3rd the drawing board space if you stick to one class
Wait there's a whole section dedicated to speaking about the character you create?
and another for optimising those characters #optimization
Yes, that's why I linked to it.....
#channel-guide
☝️ if you want to see what channels there are
Awe. Drawing board we go
Just keep the questions newcomerish and it still fits here 😄
hello
Hi :0
Hey everyone! I just joined this server because I need to learn how to play dungeons and dragons. Like... I NEED to because 1. it is on my bucketlist and 2. I feel like one day obtaining the title of dungeon master is so elite and I want to get there
?new

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
YOU ARE THE BEST!!! THANK YOU
I will get right to it!
Just as an FYI, becoming a dm isn't some form of competition or elite group of people who understand the game. If you really wanted to, you can go pick up the starter kit, read the rules and adventure included and run it for your friends this weekend.
but see, i figured I would need to at least know the idea of how to play properly and know my way around the game first to eventually get there?
Anyone can be a dm, all you have to do is be willing to try, and willing to understand that you will make mistakes, but as long as everyone is having fun, it's ok!
That is amazing to know, oh my goodness. woah
There are many out there that believe you can't dm effectively if you've never played before, but the true fact of the matter is that it doesn't matter. I started right off the bat with dming. Many others have as well
I've legit only ran a player character twice in my time of playing d&d. I pretty much exclusively DM
WOOOWWWWW
OK! THANK YOU!! I will indulge into this dungeon master idea then too
are there any other resources to get me accustomed to the role though?
Watch those tutorial videos first so you know how the game roughly works.
yup, i have the links open as we speak
Head over to #dm-discussion if you want to ask specific questions or for advice about DMing.
Start with the basic rules that were linked above because you will need those regardless. Then I would look into reading an adventure, like Lost Mine is free on d&d beyond, and go from there
i appreciate both of your help, i really am grateful
will do!
ok! thank you again!
There’s a ton of YouTube advice, but I like Matt Colville’s “Running the Game” series. I also find these helpful: the Alexandrian, the Angry GM, Sly Flourish, and Johnn Four’s Roleplaying Tips. You can hunt down all of these via Google.
hello
hi
hey
Welcome!
Very new and i didnt know there were so many options for your character! 🤦🏾♂️
Yeah, it can be overwhelming
is there any like free sheet builders other than dnd beyond that has more stuff?
No there isn't. Any free builder that gives you more than what's available in the free basic rules is piracy
And I believe the only places where you can purchase digital 5e content are d&d beyond, roll20, and fantasy grounds
Very much so
It wouldnt shock me if your local library had DnD handbooks
hello, i have no idea how dnd works

Alakabam
hihi I'm really new to dnd, and I want to get started, but I'm super nervous to join a campaign, any advice?
Advice for joining or the nervousness?
both I guess
For joining: look for campaigns that sound interesting and reach out to the person who advertised it. Be polite and courteous. Ask how newbie-friendly the game is and be transparent about your experience and knowledge.
You have plenty of options for learning the game in the meantime, so watch some videos or do some reading so you’re not starting from zero. Cast your net wide—there are tons of venues to find games/groups. Be patient—it takes time to find a good, compatible group.
For the nervousness, I’d say play the game how you’re comfortable; you don’t have to do a voice or speak in character, so long as the table is cool with how you play. Recognize everyone’s in it to have a good time, so try not to get hung up on worries about being judged.
thank you so much!
@candid lagoon some key words you can look for are starter set, beginner friendly, newbies welcome, that kind of a thing. Ultimately, though, the hard part for some is asking. At some point you'll need to reach out to a DM contact them. Also, you can leave any table that you are not comfortable with. Find your people and you'll be great. Just give yourself patience, space, and time to find a good fit.
thank you, that's so helpful (:
hey, how do I join a campaign?
You can look in #find-a-game
thank you, much appreciated

Ooo that’s noice
Hello I have a question for anyone who can answer
I'm new to all this me and my friends just decided "hey we want to play DnD" so rn we are in the mist of makes character(if we are even doing that correct) but I guess what I'm trying to ask is if anyone knows anywhere we can find a Dm who is willing to run a campaign in discord with 3 new new player for our first ever run?
Post in #750812887697588356. There's also a looking-for-game/group guide linked a few messages up.
Is there a reason one of you can't be the DM?
We have no idea how also I'm pretty sure well for me at least I would love to have a world and campaign ran by someone who could give us a beautiful world and experience that we'd love to continue playing more and more ya know
I don't know if any DM starts out knowing how to DM. You learn from resources and by doing. Not that you have to—I'm just pointing out it's an option.
There are way more players than DMs, so DMs can let players come to them, which means you're in theory competing against legions of others. Someone stepping up to DM means the game actually happens rather than waiting on someone to choose your group from the many out there.
That makes sense but in the end just me personally I can't speak for my friends I'd rather have someone who knows what they're doing
Fair. Good luck in your search!
Thank you! 😊
heyyyy, I am a newcomer looking for a group. Does anyone have any experience on how to start

ty ty!
Does a Magic Initiate Rouge need an Arcane Focus?
You would need either a component pouch or a focus for any spells that require a Material component.
So if I have neither then I can’t use spells
Per the rules, yes, without the materials or a focus, you wouldn't be able to cast spells.
Im making a changeling fighter and I'm on it's stats, how many points go into each stat and how many points do I have to add ?
which subclass are you planning to take?
Subclass?
yeah, like you need to invest some into INT if you wanna do an eldritch knight
What's an eldritch?
Eldritch Knight is the name of the subclass
This is my first time ever talking about DND or making a character sorry

What are subclasses and do everyone have one?
Every class gets subclasses, you typically get them at level 3, but some classes obtains them earlier
Oh so a fight gets eldritch knight?
That's one of the 10 official fighter subclasses, yes
You might wanna read through this a little
Since you're new, I'd recommend either the subclasses Champion or Battle Master.
the former is very simple and vanilla, and the latter gives you a bunch of extra moves called "maneuvers" you can use in battle.
Ohhhhh okay thank you I get it now
np 👍
just wondering is a bard a good class to use
Most classes are pretty viable
ok thanks
bards are skill monkey casters, so they might not do as well as like. a wizard in combat
but they're very fun too

I’m hoping I can actually find a discord game where I don’t have to dm for once 😂

@vernal bloom add me
Hello
add me too?
Is there a cult/following that is heavily based in or on inscriptions or seals / talismans to bring forth power
Ask your dm, that’s a part of their world building.

thank you
If you don’t mind me asking, what country are you in? I would be surprised if there were absolutely no dnd groups there
Either way you can always play online games
Whats the difference between insight and perception checks
They’re different checks
If a dm is wondering if you see something you’ll make a perception check
If theyre wondering what you figure out from what you see it’s an insight check
Ic ic
Insight is also heavily used for interpreting the behavior of others, and determining if something is lying
Your Wisdom (Insight) check decides whether you can determine the true intentions of a creature, such as when searching out a lie or predicting someone’s next move. Doing so involves gleaning clues from body language, speech habits, and changes in mannerisms.
Your Wisdom (Perception) check lets you spot, hear, or otherwise detect the presence of something. It measures your general awareness of your surroundings and the keenness of your senses. For example, you might try to hear a conversation through a closed door, eavesdrop under an open window, or hear monsters moving stealthily in the forest. Or you might try to spot things that are obscured or easy to miss, whether they are orcs lying in ambush on a road, thugs hiding in the shadows of an alley, or candlelight under a closed secret door.
Colombia
I haven't heard of it here, maybe in the capital but I'm new to the city

OK!
NOPE
You should read the rules before you join a game.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
You don't have to read all of the basic rules, but having a glance at character creation and combat rules can help speed up the process
thank you sm
OK
Most will click into place as you play but getting a general idea helps a lot
am i supposed to create a character before i find a game?
Usually best to make a character with your DM, specifically for the table, in case they have any houserules, and also to make sure your character fits the game.
But you can come up with general ideas and practice making them before hand.
THANK YOU SM
Finding a game might also take a while online. Is how it is.
I recommend looking out for newbie friendly games, oneshots (short games that last one session or so), and Adventure League (Organised play #adventurers-league ), or westmarches (large servers where people run spontaneous games for players).
These are all ways of meeting people quickly and playing with them, to see if you get along- think of it a little bit like speed dating. You want to know you all click before committing to a full game together for ages.
LMAO ok thanks!!
You find people you get along with, even if the game falls through, stay in contact, and hopefully if they find a game, they'll invite you along, and you can invite people you got along with along, and then you just slowly network and make your own online group.
DAMN that sounds fun
You'll probably also have more fun finding players that you already know, i.e. playing with friends. if you don't have many friends who are interested, a gaming cafe might be the place to look and see if you can join a game. But that depends on your location.
OHHH im from india barely anyone knows about D&D here...
You can watch people play on Youtube or Twitch to get how it's played.
sure imma do that
See if there's a board game cafe in your city. If they don't already have a D&D thing going, it might be the kind of place to engage with people who would be willing to play.
nope no such place
i found a group!!!!
Well done!
Does it make sense for foes to focus on killing their unstable enemies rather than trying to kill other characters?
Foes that are still conscious are more of a threat than unconscious ones.
Yeah, but if he sees that he is gonna loose a fight he could rather choose to sabotage and kill your friend right?
Depends on the enemy.
More often than not, a rational enemy would try to flee a losing battle, not murder out of spite. Some enemies might not think that way though...fanatics, mindless raging beasts, constructs ...
D&D monsters don't all fight to the death.
Earlier editions actually had a moral score where they could flee or surrender.
Niceeeee
People just vanishing 8 hours before campaign average?
And not even giving a warning? Lovely
And what do you do if the campaign is in an hour and youre below the minimum player count?
Talk with the others and see if you can reschedule, or try and see if you find someone ready to play in an hour 😛
They just vanish and dont respond to my dms...
Where would I do that?
Yeah somehting to get used to. Lot of things can happen. Maybe they forgot, overslept, or even found anothe rgame that overlaps
Amazin
Put a sidekick in.

Wait I thought it was removed??
Hey im about to play my first campaign and wanted to base my char of a pic i found ,hes like a country side bard/wizard wood elf
tryna figure out how to build him
Well, sounds like you have a good start there!
I'd consider Bard, Ranger, Druid or Wizard...or maybe archfey warlock or a sorcerer? And then speak with the group to see what everyone else is thinking of, so I can fit in well
any ideas on how to make it work tho
or should i just make it a bard/ sorcerer with a staff
What does community games mean in #750812887697588356
And what is implied by other services
Well you are new, so I'd advise single-classing. As for making it work...just pick a class and enjoy it! They all can be fun. It depends on what you see being fun for you.
What's your character good at?
ok , i mostly look for art or try draw something first then try base what class , race , personality and stuff using the drawing as a starting point
havent made his backstory yet just have a surface lvl of his personality rn
Right so...what is it?
can i dm you the pic so i you can understand it better?
No, I don't accept DMs from here or any server.
lemme just explain it here then
Any time I've accepted that, it's been people turning weird!
understandable i guess
You can share a link here to the image.
He feels like a bard or a druid to me.
hes a laid back country side guy who live in the outskirts not near citys , big family 4 brothers 3 sisters 2 parents , gifted at birth with his singing voice and ability to play the banjo , has a really good affinity with magic from a young age and when the citys to learn more about magic
Low-key druid, I mean
If you feel he's more attuned to nature, perhaps go druid. More attuned to arcane magic, go bard
how do i level that
i wana keep the music part with him so ill just make that a personal hobbie
So you are leaning druid? You could take a background that has music instrument proficiency, like entertainer
ok ill do that
Looking for community is where other D&D-related discord servers post links to their community. Other services is for like “pay to play” games or services.
does wood elf fit him or naw
Your DM will set a level for you to start at...commonly 1 or 3.
Wood elf or half elf I'd say
she said the theme gona be like medieval
What does community games mean in #750812887697588356 and what is implied by other services
You were just answered a few messages above ☝🏻
Although technically paid games are their own separate third category.
But as a couple specific examples, there’s a kind of game known as a West March, where lots of different people play in a shared game world. Game sessions happen regularly, but you might end up playing with a different sub-group each time.
Ok I just joined.
I know literally nothing about DnD but I heard it’s cool.
I have no friends so I’m looking for any sort of game or community to be a part of
Or if there’s a site that offers its own kind of game-finding process, that would be an “other service”.
Welcome! There’s a few handy links here to get you started, but if you have any specific questions, please ask!

Why do I get the feeling this is gonna be a LOT to take in…
Yeah, there’s quite a bit there. 😅
I’d definitely start with that introductory demo for the basics.
Wait so… I don’t have to pay for anything do I.
I came here to play with people but do I need to pay for the game?
That Handbooker Helper link does a good job of breaking things down into smaller chunks, though.
But yeah, you can play D&D basically forever without spending a dime.
So… how do I start or join a game then
The Basic Rules are everything you really need to know, though they’ve got a limited selection of character options.
Pretty basic so I don’t need a lot of options
You can use digital dice rollers if you don’t want to buy dice.
I hate magic so I’d probably just go for something basic
#find-a-game can get you started with that.
Does anyone know where do the adventurers start in The Lost Mine of Phandelver campaign? I'm a bit confused
They leave it open, but the option they present in the book is that all of you are part of an escort group who have taken a job from gundren to move some mining gear from Neverwinter to phandalin. So start on the road
My group started in Neverwinter itself, except one person who missed session 1 and instead met them at the first dungeon as someone who was captured travelling the other direction
I started them in Neverwinter because I set up a tavern scene as a tutorial level for the VTT they were using.
Oh I see
hello!
Don't get snowed under with detail - in reality, you'll start with a few simple options,a nd it builds slowly from there
Unborn Dragon on the board! In a human flesh and skin n form!
A criticism of 5e is that it relies on the DM to act as the simulation engine a lot - and you as the player just need to declare what you want to try to do.

Have you checked the table for Druids here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#CreatingaDruid
A first level druid knows 2 cantrips and 2 level 1 spells.
hello
Ahoy and welcome
Hi
I have a level 1 wizard, and I see D&D Beyond allows me to learn every available spell, and then I can prepare 6 of them (+5 Int). Do I really get to learn all the spells or only learn what I can prepare?
if you read the class description, it says that can only learn 6 first level spells at level 1
the reason D&D Beyond lets you select more is that you can find and copy more spells from spellbooks or spell scrolls during a game
That makes sense. So I can learn 6, and I can prepare those 6, also. I'm guessing that other wizards with lower intelligence would learn 6 spells, but not prepare all of them.
Correct.
And when you level up, you'll always gain two new free wizard spells, and be able to prepare one additional spell.
right, +5 INT at level 1 is rather unusual btw
Yes, unusual and not necessarily advisable. An 18 will probably suffice in your main stat until you hit level 4 and get an ASI.
We rolled for stats, and I had 14, 14, 14, 16, 16, and 18. My racial bonus is +2 Int. Maybe I did something wrong.
I mean if you indeed rolled those stats and your DM is okay with how it went, then you did nothing wrong. You got incredible lucky though
He seemed happy excited when I said I rolled 18, and I didn't know that was a good thing at the time.
It's more that your spread is very high across the board. Your lowest stat being a 14 is pretty god-tier stuff.
Yeah it's a bit ludicrous compared to most player stats
compare to standard array, which is slightly less than the average from 6 times 4d6 drop lowest
15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8
you are way way above average
We do have a goliath barbarian like that in our party... 20STR, 16CON, absolute unit. Rest of their stats are normal-ish though
I have a bard, my strategy is stand behind him and cast vicious mockery between his legs 😂
I did the math, this is in the top 0.29% of outcomes based on the total.
We did 4d6, reroll the lowest, then drop the lowest. We did that for 2 stat groups and got to choose which stat group rolls we wanted to use.
ah well that is certainly a way to get inflated stats lol
i assume you mean 4d6, not 4d4 lol
Whoops, yeah 4d6.
So that's equivalent to doing 5d6 keep highest 3, twice and keep highest. And that does skew it a lot higher. But your roll would still be in the top 7.36%.
Doing it twice just doubles the odds of getting at least a particular score, because you are doing P(>x) OR P(>x) which equals 2* P(>x)
My second set of rolls was much closer to the standard array.
Comparison of standard roll method (black) vs a single run of the method you used https://i.imgur.com/A9FegBc.png
I wonder if I can get anydice to show me the effect of the keeping highest...
ah there it is, blue line https://imgur.com/Qk3IK7o
I suppose those dice rolls were very wonderful and will help me in my first campaign. I'll ask the DM about it and find out what he wants to do. Five of us are new to D&D and this is our first campaign.
Is the DM new too? If not it might just be that he prefers this style of play, as it will encourage more epic gameplay and usage of feats. There's nothing wrong with playing that way if that's what you enjoy
hello! im fairly new to dnd i kind of got the basics down but i am wanting to start a campign with some irl friends the problem is i dont know where to start does anyone know of any guides for becoming a DM
If the DM is new, I'd definitely have a conversation about whether this is a good idea, because the flip side is that the lack of challenge might be less fun.
Welcome! Best advice would probably be to read through one of the starter campaigns designed to introduce new players. They have lots of asides to help a new DM. Reading the rules is also a good place to start, but it's easy to get overwhelmed with the breadth of possibilities, when the campaign will be more focussed on key common scenarios
Hello fellars. I am a new bro who would like to learn to play DnD. The thing is that there is a fairly sexy nerdy dude that I'm into and he is sooo into DnD. I expect to someday be able to play with him n his friends. Please someone who can teach me the game to rizz up his fabulous cheeeeks 🤤
I am in a similar position !

There’s a ton of YouTube videos with DM advice; my personal favorite is Matt Colville. I’ve also gotten a lot of good info from the Alexandrian, the Angry GM, Sly Flourish, and Johnn Four’s Roleplaying Tips. You can find all these via Google.

Hi, I’m new to DND. I have the beginner Essential kit’ and some friends with prior experience to help me (and be DM) but do you guys have any tips or things I should do for it?
…
I would check out the players handbook and the basic rules just to start while even if you have people helping you in my personal experience its been a lot more helpful especially now that I am starting to DM to have read through them because when I was first getting started I had people teach me their version of how dnd is played not how it was supposed to be played which caused confusion later so definitely would check through some of them especially the basic rules because that'll help walk you through character stuff etc
Hi guys i totaly new with DND if someone can DM me to start and teach me chill (im french, i have a charecter) have a good day !
sorry for my bad english but i am better want i speak i promis !

West marches type campaigns
I don't know the command to bring up the info for them sorry. They're basically games without a set party or schedule
im new to dnd and im tryn make a rogue
here are my stats: 20,18,19,11,10,22
That's very high, and one is over 22
That doesn't seem correct as it's not possible to roll higher than 18 when rolling for stats
And assuming those include your modifiers from your race, 22 still isn't possible
You might want to look over the rules for character creation again
I'm kinda curious where they came from, because even if you did 4d6 and kept all 4, that's still very high!
wdym i used the role a die google , rolled 5 drop the lowest one and saved the number
Each class
