It costs gold for wizards to prepare spells?
Evocation Savant. The gold and time you must spend to copy an evocation spell into your spellbook is halved.
No.
It costs gold to copy new spells into their spellbook.
Preparing != copying.
hey there
i need help with dnd beyond. how do i add feats to a new character if i have not puchased the PH from them?
Depends on the class.
You will have to custom make your own feats.
Wizard
No
Ritual Casting
You can cast a wizard spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have the spell in your spellbook. You don’t need to have the spell prepared.
Wizard can cast rituals that aren't prepared because they have that as a unique ability.
That makes them quite useful
No other class has that without ritual caster feat or book of shadows invocation on warlock.
I just freed up some preparation slots for my character. Just what I needed.
Go get em
Why does the wizard have 12 AC on page 7 here? https://media.wizards.com/downloads/dnd/StarterSet_Characters.pdf
you get base 10 AC for common clothes?
They have a +2 DEX.
yes, 10+dex mod is the base if you have no armor
10 is base AC, plus 2 from dex
AC 10 is the baseline AC for everything.
and why is the fighter folk hero only 13 AC while the cleric is 18 AC? shouldn't he have better armor?
literally JUST 1 more AC than the wizard lol
They went with leather armour because they're an archer (see Fighting Style: Archery)
cleric is wearing chain mail plus shield
you get penalties with wearing armor as an archer?
No.
actually on page 9 it says they have 14 AC https://media.wizards.com/downloads/dnd/StarterSet_Characters.pdf
you do get penalties on sneak with heavy armor though
most medium and all heavy armor has a penalty to stealth, and medium maxes out at +2 dex
AC 11 (leather armour) + 3 from Dex modifier = AC 14
And no shield
Do I just look it up in the PH and add it to the notes section of character sheet?
Cleric has chain for 16 ac and then a shield for +2 ac.
Ask in #ddb-support
A fighter with str could pick up the same armor at creation I believe.
If you look at the starting equipment for the fighter, they can either choose "Chainmail" or "Leather armour, longbow, and 20 arrows." The premade fighter chose the latter:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Equipment5
oh i see
because my cleric was worried in our group on why he's the tank basically lol
he assumed he was a healer/support
Clerics can be tanky
i would assume fighters to be more for tanking though lol
Clerics are in no way heal bots in 5e.
Fighters CAN be tanky, but not a dex fighter with a longbow
Yeah they’re real chonky with that heavy armor.
Just keep in mind those classic roles don’t really exist in 5e. There’s no way for a “tank” to hold and draw aggro if the DM decides the monsters don’t want to attack the walking mountain of metal.
so can't the fighter get plate mail later and use the bow too?
Clerics have some of the highest damage for casters.
You need 15 str for platemail
It's hard to split your stats like that since you want max dex to use your bow.
And the difference between studded leather and plate mail is only 1 AC with max dex.
Sure. If they’re okay with bumping up their strength to 15 or suffering from -10 movement for not meeting the requirement.
i just want the fighter to have more AC than the cleric
If you take the defense fighting style yoi could have 18 ac with studded leather, the same as platemail.
also my player changed that ranged fighter into draconic race which removes the dex bonus from human
I would stop thinking this way for dnd
AC does make you a tank essentially and less killable
The classes aren't supposed to have rigid boxes they fit in
Not all fighters are melee.
The cleric could have higher ac than the fighter and its fine.
like can't the fighter block a bottleneck from creatures coming through?
how can you block a bottle neck though? it only counts as difficult terrain and they walk past you, no?
No you can't enter an enemies space
i missed that RAW
You can only pass through if you're two sizes bigger
or a halfling
Or have an ability like halfling
what ability?
That's still one size bigger though
Halflings can move through a creatures space only 1 size bigger.
Friend or foe.
Halfling Nimbleness. You can move through the space of any creature that is of a size larger than yours.
halflings can basically run between the legs of other creatures if those creatures are at least 1 size bigger
can goblins do the same?
No
Only halfling
Gnomes can't either. Gnomes are taller than halflings on average though.
As a DM I'd allow it. It'd be considered a ball head-bash dash attack
You can take the shove action to push em back.
Just pile everyone up in a single square.
how bad of an idea is it that my player chose to change to draconic race for the ranged fighter starter character? lol
They can be any race.
Dragonborn I'm guessing?
Gnomes are between 3 and 4 feet tall and average about 40 pounds. Your size is Small
it just means the breath weapon won't be as effective since enemies will most likely (preferably) be out of range. it's a nice back-up in case an enemy does get close though
Halflings average about 3 feet tall and weigh about 40 pounds. Your size is Small.
yes
What weapons should a pure wizard carry? An arcane focus in one hand, a staff in another? A staff as an arcane focus, if those exist? Only an arcane focus in one hand or on your body, and at least one hand free for casting spells or utility?
pure wizards will usually stay at range, so just an arcane focus should be fine
You'd usually just have an arcane focus.
Or if you multiclassed, a shield.
Action surge wizard.
Thanks. Just an arcane focus it is.
either you buy them (recommended) or you make your own feat as homebrew and add is as normal (make sure that the slider for homebrew in character creation is ON)
Thank you
why does the fighter at page 9 (folk hero) have a greatsword and high strength if they're ranged based? https://media.wizards.com/downloads/dnd/StarterSet_Characters.pdf
why not specialize into dexterity? why split stats?
seems odd that you would use a strength based melee weapon + dexterity based weapon
versatility
For funny jokes
but it makes you weaker at both ranged and melee and you have less AC with light armor
And? If the fighter would be ranged only, and and enemy got in melee range, they'd not have a fun time. The game isn't just about the stats (at least for me) it's also about the roleplay. Some people are very good in only 1 thing, others are reasonably good in several things
but the other fighter can throw javelins
Yes, and? You don't need to play this specific character you know 😉
it just seems like the better fighter choice
less likely to die and can also do more damage and also do ranged
plus you can do dual wielding (two weapon fighting) better with more dexterity as you would be using light weapons
On the sage dndbeyond page, it says some stuff about specialty (for example researcher, or wizard's apprentice), but below for Feature it only displays flavor text for one of the features (researcher)
Does this mean you have to make up your own flavor for your desired choice?
No, the feature you get, period. The specialty is flavour
Okay, thanks 🙂
so no mater what specialty you choose, you always get the researcher feature
Then it makes sense
I just thought that since researcher was a specific speciality listed, and the feature listed specifically mentioned researcher, that the two was somehow connected.
How useful is comprehend languages for someone that already speaks common, elvish, dwarvish, and primordial?
depends on the character. if you play the translator, very 😛
I guess it would depend entirely on the adventure and what you encounter in it
Idk. I am super new to D&D.
I bought the 5e player's handbook, dungeon master's guide, volo's guide to monsters (hasn't updated tracking yet 😭), and xanthar's guide to everything
I am now wondering which of these is better to buy:
The Dungeon Master's Screen Reincarnated or The Dungeon Master's Screen Dungeon Kit.
Hey im New is character cretion usally handled in a session 0 here or are characters pre made then jsut qued togather for the quest
I technicly made a character and then did 1 sessoin but was unable to cintinueso thats why I wasasking
What do you mean you couldn't continue?
If your DM has premium, they can share their digital access with others.
Smart to buy IF you are going to DM, but if you're just a player it's often better to get access from a DM willing to share access.
That's my understanding at least.
Depends on the DM. Some might provide pre-generated characters. Some might use session zero as an opportunity to lay out expectations and to discuss character creation.
"You can share your books and compendium content across five campaigns with up to 12 players each! It’s like bringing a backpack full of books for your friends to use, minus the heavy backpack."
I was talking about physical products. I wasn't aware there was any sharing on the D&D Beyond app.
If you play IRL, having real books is probably way cooler.
Not something I can help with, unfortunately. I'm new myself.
Depends on your budget.
I have one from ugears with built-in dice tower, way cooler 😛
I'm new to ttrpg, i haven't gotten any group to play with, so I'm soloing with the help of a book called "Solo adventure's toolbox" helps to DM myself for a solo play.
Can someone tell me how to determine likelihood modifier? Do i have to roll a dice or something?
Have you read the (free) Basic Rules?

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
I did but i will check it again. I don't think it's ability score modifier. Thank you, i will check it again
What's a "likelihood modifier", I'm not sure that's really a term I've ever heard used in any rules 🤔
can friendly PCs attack past another PC with bows and spells if they are blocking a bottleneck that's 1 tile? or is there friendly fire or cover?
It is from "solo adventure's toolbox" and yes it is a collaboration with dnd
Well the toolbox would probably explain the term somewhere then. Again not exactly a term I recall ever seeing
It's not an official product from WotC.
That's the reason i mentioned collaboration😅
It is by some guy called Paul bilmer
Well collaboration or not, it'd still count as unofficial content if it isnt published by WotC, so unfortunately cant really help with what they were thinking about there Im afraid 😅
Okay, thank you guys🙂 @edgy onyx @cobalt frigate
What's the context where its used? Is it some specific mention where its only mentioned once or like, in several areas? Because Id imagine theyd have some sort of explanation for it if its used commonly in the toolbox
Just read the Basic Rules again.
Yeah, its about survival area and such
👍 okay
Basic rules dont contain this term, thus the confusion 😅
Hey. I've read the rules, made a character and I know how the general game works, but I've never played before, and I don't think I will find a group with only the post on #750812887697588356. Is there any other way I can find other players and a DM? Is there something else I need to read beforehand?
Okay, i understand 😅. Thank you for replying 🙂
If you read the basic rules and want to learn more about how the game works, there's a "player's handbook".
Well some VTTs tend to have ways to look for groups too, roll20 I at least know of off the top of my head. But also check out #looking-for-players if you haven't already, as thats DMs looking for players, where you can post on the threads they leave there
That's the problem. I saw some stuff like "D20" and even in the character creating screen I saw some terms I've never seen before, like:
Homebrew Content
Critical Role Content
Magic: The Gathering Content
Eberron Content
Noncore D&D Content
Dragonlance Content
Where can I find information about those things? I didn't see any mention of that in the rules
Don't worry about that. It's only if the DM allows those content for their campaign setting.
Yeah these are D&D beyond settings about what type of content you want to have available for your character, basically. Doesn't directly affect your character at this point unless you know what you're doing
it might relate to random encounters, and how likely it is they run into them. You can have several options and roll a dice for it. Like walking in the forest, roll d100, 1-50: pack of wolves, 51-75 pack of werewolves, 76-98 bandits, 99-100 dragon burns the forest down ( I just made these up) The DMG has some suggestions on this I believe
Also D20 means a 20 sided dice
Thank you very much. I'll try looking for a DM in #looking-for-players
There is another book extended version, think i need to get that book for more detailed explanations
short answer: google
if a cleric is casting a somatic spell and they're wielding a warhammer and shield, don't they have to drop the warhammer or shield to cast it?
Well terms like D20 are explained fairly well in the main books. But if you're looking for information about non core content, then that would indeed be best to Google
Yes.
so a cleric would typically drop and pickup their stuff a lot then?
You should have at least one free hand.
To do the somatic spell I mean.
and can't enemies kick away or pickup their shield or weapon if they drop it?
Well, this is up to your and the DM's imagination.
they can try in my opinion
i mean it's not a try, there's no check afaik
and it would use the creature's combat action though
That's what you do as a DM to rule if it's possible when there's no specific rule on such a case.
And a DM can more or less change rules how they see fit. The rules are a guideline. Not something entirely set in stone.
as the enemy you can also pick up the dropped weapen and be like mine now 😛
iirc, many DMs ignore encumbrance or just give bags of holding early on
As an example of a DM dictating how things work in the game over the rules.
The point is to have fun.

or homebrewed exhaustion rules 😛
do clerics have access to all spells and they can prepare any while wizard has to find then spend money & time to copy spells?
Clerics can prepare any cleric spells for the level they have spell slots for, yes.
Speaking of time to copy the spell.
Wizards learn a few spells on reaching new levels, but to round out their repertoire, yes, they need to find them in game.
wizard can learn a few new spells at each level for free
I haven't gotten through the books yet. Is there a section on how time works? How to keep track of it?
If it take 2 hours to copy a spell, for example, is there a guideline to know when that time is up and the spell is copied?
dice, increase dice when time passes
Beyond the rules, it's DM fiat. There's no official clock system in place.
What?
each round in combat is 6 seconds, use a d20 and increase it by 1 for each round. When it hits 10 that means 1 minute passed
Time outside of combat isn't tracked by anything other than the dm.
I am aware of that much
if it was old school D&D where you took turns, each action is 10 minutes, so when d20 hits 6 that's 1 hour
You just go "yeah sure you have 10 hours of time"
you can just be like, you're busy for 2 hours, what does the rest do, if nothing special you can just time-skip
otherwise it's up to you as the DM
Yeah,you just make it up.
I believe Xanathar’s goes in to more detail in downtime and how it breaks down in terms of living expenses, workweeks, and examples of things to do.
Generally you’d talk to your DM about what you do during your downtime (say during a few hours of your long rest or the potential days, weeks, or years between adventures.)
make it up if you're theater of mind lazy
I can make weeks pass in a single sentence.
Or I can make a minute take 4 hours in combat.
My copy of Xanthar's is supposed to get delivered today.
Xanathar's just gives options for downtime. It doesn't adjudicate how to have time pass.
Things like "if they have a week and work a job they can earn money"
Roll one if these checks and see how much money they get.
And then overprice everything
So their job was wasted
jk 😜
Btw I heard "Tasha's" has changes to mechanics people don't like and that the "guide to the Multiverse" uses these new mechanics too
Depending on the world, most people working full time in medieval times wouldn't earn any money beyond what they needed to live. In a fantasy setting this doesn't need to be the case, but beyond highly skilled artisans you wouldn't be left with a ton of gold after a week of work.
What do you guys think?
People generally liked Tashas
The issue was the grognard old school people who didn't like that it published that races could change their ability score increases around.
tasha's allows for more flexible stats, which I was all for (I can now be an orc spellcaster if I wanted)
An elf doesn't have +2 dex? This ruins my game and now races don't matter!
To me this is an insane take and I've seen SO much more racial variety after the change.
Some of the subclasses are OP but that's all the class books. PHB has moon druid, Xanathar's has Hexblade and Tashas has Twilight cleric.
It actually just arrived.
xD
whoop whoop!
But I am curious if I have to worry about corrections to the text.
The Player's Handbook and DMG both say "this printing includes corrections"
What do you mean by worry?
That just means they had corrections done to make things clearer or correct mistakes.
Yes.
Books are fine.
Which means that the Xanthar book probably has had some but not in the printing I have
Hence the "worry"
It's all minor stuff. You can check out any errata online.
I don't think there are different printings of Xanathars which have different content
There is nothing to worry about.
Here you go so you don't have to worry: https://dnd.wizards.com/sage-advice/book-updates
All current changes to books.
If you buy a book from most modern sellers it will most likely be the newest or at least newer revision.
i forgot how concentration save works, sorry, can someone explain real quick? if i did like, 40 damage, whats the check dc?
I buy from Ebay because it's cheaper.
50 dollars for each book is unreasonable to me at the moment.
xD
Con save equal to dc10 or half of the damage taken. The highest DC takes priority
so if i did 40 damage the DC is 20?
Yes
Np
Page 5 of Xanthar's says "The DM Adjudicates The Rules. One rule overrides all others: the DM is the final authority on how the rules work in play."
There's more info in that section. But that's the most important line of it.
xD
Basically: Rules in D&D = tool. DM final word on matter = gospel

Yeah, as long as you don't frustrate your players with crazy rulings or they'll kick ya out.
all players take 4 damage for no reason
lol jk
I'd personally stick to rules more heavily for now because I haven't DM'd yet.
I am trying to learn enough to DM for my brother and our group of friends
I wonder if I should fully read the player's handbook before reading through the DMG
You dint gotta read the whole thing.
Most of dnd is in the ability score section.
If you're dming this section explains how to call for each ability check.
Oh, they're trying to stand on a rocking ship? That's acrobatics. Oh their trying to jump further than normal? Athletics. And so on.
In general that's the most useful section for a new dm to know IMO for just general running of the game. Like the basics.
I hope somewhere in the DMG there's guidelines on rewarding players but not so much that it is game breaking
xD
You can look at inspiration for something quick and simple
Or I just say F it and make the group meet a magical old person who increases their levels by 1

jk that's too much
Well that'd just be milestone leveling with an extra step, technically 😛
But not so much a milestone
Just a cheat free level
xD
Though I wasn't aware "milestone leveling" was a thing
That in the basic rules too?
xD
I believe so 🤔 It should be a variant rule somewhere where they explain XP xD
But yeah basically milestone leveling is just instead of giving XP, its DM deciding a good spot for the party to level up, usually at the end of a chapter or other story beat
So thats why sending in that old man is basically same thing, since both are in DM's control xD

I think milestone leveling is in the DMG, but the idea behind it isn't very complex. Give the players a level up when they achieve a significant story moment.
Is there any mechanic that can delevel a character?
No idea why you would want to do that
Deck of many things has one effect that causes it
Interesting
Hello
If using a phsyical character sheet, you have to write in pencil, right?
Since stats and levels etc. change
And some classes can't subclass into some specific subclasses immediately
Like a Warlock as of 1st level can be a Celestial or Hexblade. But not a War Magic user until 2nd level.
(I chose these particular subclasses because I have Xanthar's open)
Pencil is probably wise given that the numbers do change. Unless you go fancy and have plastic sleeves you can use markers on.
I'm going even fancier
I have pdf versions and will use my iPad Pro to write on it

I’m searching for someone who can teach me the basics by playing just with me as of it was a tutorial
PDFs are mighty convenient.

Then #looking-for-players
I’ll try
I'm watching some people play D&D. One of them has the cloak of the bat or whatever it is called. The DM allows the player to choose the size of the bat he turns into when activating the ability of the cloak. The size of the bat affects his stealth, speed, and possibly other factors. Would this be considered homebrew, or RAW?
If I cast Find Familiar, would some DMs allow me to, for example, choose the size of my spider familiar, between a large arachnid or a tiny spider, depending on what I need in this particular situation?
Sounds like homebrew
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/4608-cloak-of-the-bat
While wearing the cloak in an area of dim light or darkness, you can use your action to cast polymorph on yourself, transforming into a bat. While you are in the form of the bat, you retain your Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores.
the Bat has set statistics, so size would not be part of it RAW:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16802-bat
For find familiar you can pick from the creatures listed- all have set statistics you use.
You gain the service of a familiar, a spirit that takes an animal form you choose: bat, cat, crab, frog (toad), hawk, lizard, octopus, owl, poisonous snake, fish (quipper), rat, raven, sea horse, spider, or weasel.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/find-familiar (Dndbeyond links to each stat block too)
Although DMs can let you get creative.
Then I'm officially more interested in games that allow what I'd consider reasonable levels of homebrew. I'd like to have my imagination be a part of the game. If I was a "powerful" wizard, capable of summoning a familiar of various species, I would likely also be able to choose sub-species and have an impact of the size of the familiar.
That Handbooker Helper is really helpful. I just watched their video on components because I didn't get material components at all the first time I played
But in general, thats the rules.
Usually reflavouring (changing the 'fluff' or description of something, but not the mechanics) is fine, but as soon as you start messing with mechanics, you can upset the balance and make more work for your DM.
Handbooker Helper is pretty good- would link that over some of the official D&D starter videos
I'll look at that.
I understand that some things can be unbalanced and more work, but other things are minor. A smaller spider would naturally be harder to spot, thus increased stealth. As it's smaller, it would naturally have fewer hit points as well. Minor changes IMO.
Actually sounds like you might be interested in 3.5- or at least looking over some of it's rules as it absolutely included size that way. Size gave penalties or bonuses to a lot of skills and checks like AC (being smaller =harder to hit), stealth (smaller = harder to see), strength (bigger = can carry more), grapple (bigger you are vs opponent, better chances).
5e's philosophy was to avoid all that minutia because it adds up to a lot of things to remember.
So for you and your DM's game, you can consider what things you want to add to add to your fun, but also worth playing vanilla to get a feel for how the game is intended to work first before changing things.
Minutia can be fun, if you have players and a DM that enjoy it.
The intent is obviously to gain an advantage, and that might be something the DM has to take into account before designing the game. If the party is almost always well prepared before fighting the enemies, maybe the enemies need to be tougher.
Sounds like you have thought about some of the issues around potential homebrew like that, so if your DM agrees, working out that balance for yourselves is def possible.
If you haven't played, let alone you haven't run a game before, you may not realize the work it takes as is for the DM. Folks introducing new material is extra plates to juggle; not everyone is up for that. So yes, find a group who has a similar mindset!
I played 3.5 before 5e so got used to all the little micromanaging and minutia so sometimes I enjoy breaking out a spreadsheet to finetune a PC, but sometimes I enjoy 5e's more abstract and easy flowing style. Finding your own personal preference, or enjoying different style of games is well worth it
When I start looking for a group, I'll remember to specify this. Thanks guys 🙂
Remember to have fun
That's the most important part
Yup
How different is 3.5 to 5? Honeslty might try to know a bit of 3.5 if enough people play that one too
Fairly. Are you familiar with the Elder Scrolls video games (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim), just to provide an analogy?
Very different. They're two completely rulesets. I would say 5E is relatively more simple than 3.5E (lots of modifier stacks).
If you want to know more about 3.5E then head on over to #dnd-elder-editions
I'd say if comfortable with D&D and how it works, looking into how other editions worked can be very enlightening and give ideas to steal from, and can always be worth testing out a game in. But right, #dnd-elder-editions is def the better channel for these chats.
To continue the analogy, assuming familiarity-
3.5 is like Morrowind, 5e a bit like Skyrim. Technically the same concepts, world, vibes, but Morrowind is crunchy.
There are a lot more rules and calculations character build wise that affect your game (Minor and Major skills, more skills, different armour types, armour rules, so on). Skyrim is a bit more simple (Skill trees, done)

Guys what weapon should a level 7 druid use (I'm using normal weapons)
I don't know if I ever used a weapon for a druid at that level.
You'll likely get plenty of opinions from #character-discussion if you head there.
I'm just starting out as a disgraced human rogue. Weapon ideas?
Disgraced from what?
Ultimately, you’ll want a finesse or ranged weapon so you can use Sneak Attack.
i am starting a campaign and no one i know wants to dm so its up to me but ive never done it before does anyone have advice
Is there anything specific you need help with?
Recommend checking out #dm-discussion - but the two major things I'd say is to focus on fun and establish boundaries and expectations (particularly with player behyavior and how to handle disagreements)
alright thanks!
Hello im Lunar Westwoodd and im new😛
hey just asking to see if this is right or not, "if" i'm multiclassing MonkLv.7/FighterLv.13 i will attack 4x and if i use action surge i will attack 8x, i this right ?
I kinda need help making a character
Why do you need to bump up wisdom for AC? https://youtu.be/AArYxZpBIrE?t=153
If the class uses wisdom to improve it's AC, then that's why bumping it up would be good (e.g. monk's unarmored defense)
So could someone explain to me (in simple terms) how muti classing works.. (was told I should run a Sorc/Warlock but idk when I should switch over to warlock) cuz my DM wants to run a lvl 20 one shots with the group to start in order to get a handle on what we want our PCs to be like later (everyone is new except the dm)
My general DM advice: #dnd-newcomers message
Cam someone give me run down of DnD

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
do you suffer xp penalties with multiclassing like 3e?
I don’t think so.
what's the downsides of multiclassing or things to watch out for?
No, there are no xp penalties in 5E for multiclassing. Remember 5E is about simplified rules.
You delay getting abilities in your “primary” class, and you can make yourself much less effective if you don’t have a good grasp of the overall game mechanics and the individual class mechanics, how they play off each other.
It’s probably not enough to make a PC unusable, but it could impact the feel of a character.
No class capstone abilities.
So i meed to read the handbook helper
class capstone abilities?
The videos are great.
How many?
Level 20
As many as you can watch.
Well, the videos are easier to digest than reading walls of text.
And i cant do bad things
No...
Well, read the rules then.
Hmmm
I was in character discussion and basically they told me that the class i was describing was a twilight cleric
So imma just watch them vids and go from there
are there monk weapons like kamas and sickles that do different damage?
i guess no kamas?
So ill make my character in terms of appearance and then ill watch the vids
i'm surprised sickles are only 1d4
Well if you’re using it as a monk weapon, you can use your martial arts die for the damage instead.
(Which may still be a 1d4 depending on your level.
)
What's a martial arts die?
ah nevermind
why not just dual handaxes with monk? 1d6 weapons
You certainly can. It is recommended that, for the first few levels, monks keep a weapon on them
Oooh this is the chat for me then
Yeah. So, how to get started : Depends.
If you're in the mood for an online game, you can find both free ones and paid ones.
So is making a character difficult? I’ve gotten some character sheets from my comic shop and it’s like a lot to take in
If you know what I mean
Oh sweet I will look into that
Not really. Making a level 1 character goes pretty fast
Rn I wanna try to get into dnd irl
In other games, character creation can be a nightmare, but in D&D 5e it goes quickly
So I want to start with my character
Race, class, background, attribute spread.
Oh sweet
Once you've chosen all that you're basically done
I mean I got the race, class and background done I’m mainly confused on how to like add attributes for my character
And skills
Use the standard array : 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. Distribute those six then add the racial modifiers.
As for the skills, you get two from your background, and choose a number depending on your class. Some races get more skill proficiencies. All elves are perceptive for example
There are quick builds if you're interested. You can perhaps use them as a guideline for your own character and have to change less things.
Hm what do you mean exactly I’m not the smartest
Yea my character is a ww1 pilot
So it’s a basic human
I'm sorry, a ww1 pilot?
Are dark elves (drow) as well?
You know what, that depends on the game, could be fine
Yes. All elves
Drows even more, 120 feet of darkvision
proceeds to ask about more kinds of elves jk
Yes I was wanting to create a character that got transported to a fantasy world
Sadly darkvision is black and white 😦
Character got Isekaid. Poor dude
Yea basically
Yeah, better than being blind in the dark like everyone else
xD
I’ve have an obsession with isekai
The biggest issue I see with a WW1 Pilot isekai, is that he'd at best only speak Common. If he speaks any language there at all.
Also, it's perfectly normal to only see black and white in the dark. That's how real night vision works. Colour only appears to the eyes when there's enough light
hi i just looked into dungeons and dragons and i think i want to play
German, american, french, british, russian, italian or japanese pilot?
That's not relevant, I'm just curious
OK to be perfectly honest, I don't know many DMs who would let someone play a character who got Isekai-ed
I personally wouldn't xD
Or is it Isekaid? Isekaied?
how do i find my self a group?
(neither, using "isekai" as a verb is strange)
You just made an enemy today
You can go to the #looking-for-community and other "looking for" channels.
Lol. I am just here for casual chat about the game. I don't actually intend to play virtual D&D with a group here.
Just here to chat and learn some things here and there.
Joking, btw
If you really want the big experience, the Paid DMs tend to be the ones who run the biggest games, know the rules best and prepare the most for...Obvious reasons
Well, also, you're more likely to get a DM if there's that financial incentive
Also that
Startplaying is utterly full of D&D games. So much so that non-D&D games are getting rare on that site
DMing is supposed to be fun too. But since you're not getting to actually use your character since you're not a player, then people may be less likely to want to be DMs in general.
It varies. I've been a DM far more often than a player and while I'm a firm believer in Matthew Colville's mantra of "running D&D is fun", I do feel like I'm having way more fun playing my Curse of Strahd game than running my other games
Though I'm having more fun running those games than I'm having fun playing some others so...
Okay Slimmy, I have a question.
Listening
My brother wants to play and DM and I also want to play and DM. I have agreed to be a more regular DM for the group. Do you think it's a waste of money to get/have gotten 2 copies of the Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide?
I... Don't even understand the reasoning behind getting 2 copies
Oh yeah, actually makes sense
I assume both those books are the ones that will be referenced most.
I suppose that in theory you want everyone to have their own copy of the PHB.
I think it's enough for now that I own my own set and got my brother his own.
Then I wouldn't say it's a waste
I have:
PHB x2
DMG x2
Monster Manual
Xanthar's Guide to Everthing
Volo's Guide to Monsters (hasn't arrived yet)
Elemental Evil Player's Companion (hasn't arrived yet)
are players typically allowed to reroll hitdice when leveling up?
OK two DMG is a bit much
Technically not, but some DMs may allow it
Also, there is a common houserule that lets you "add" when you train.
Perhaps. But I got both for the price of 1.
and ability scores are random? you don't get to choose to assign the points on character creation?
Rolling is one character creation method. Far more common are standard array or point buy
i don't see point buy on PHB
If you multiclass, do you get the hit die of both classes?
Elemental Evil Player’s Companion is not something that was ever sold as a physical product. 👀
Basically, that houserule goes like this :
You're a level 5 fighter with a constitution of 14, that's +2. You started at level 1 with 12HP, you then took the average of 6 getting 8 HP per level. You have 44 HP at level 5. That's the normal part.
BUT if you had rolled the maximum on each of your HD, you would have gained 12 HP every level so your "potential maximum" is 60. The houserule states that if you train, you can gain HP up to your "potential maximum"
But only like, 2 or 3 HP per downtime spent training

It might have been added by Xanathar, I am unsure
It was never sold at all, it's a free download
It’s available as a free PDF.
https://media.wizards.com/2015/downloads/dnd/EE_PlayersCompanion.pdf
If Matthew has a physical copy, I would guess that the place where he shops for books may have printed them
You would gain each class’s hit die every time you take a level in that class.
Weird... Was it ever printed?
Maybe as a publicity thing? Or as a free addition when you purchase some other books?
Possibly? I honestly don’t know.
Either way, it’s still something you can get digitally for free.
I will just return it when it arrives.
I wouldn’t pay any of the prices I’m currently seeing on Ebay. 😅
Not knowing it was available for free online, what would you have paid?
One person’s trying to sell it for $85, plus another $6 shipping. o_O
No need to return it.
It’s only 25 pages long, so… $5?
I honestly would never have paid for the elemental evil's player companion
Why not?
It's not a book. It's a companion to the elemental evil campaign
It was print on demand from Dmsguild
Every information on it should be in the elemental evil campaign
Well, it was a supplement for Princes of the Apocalypse.
iirc the EE Player's Companion contains legacy races like Genasi and Aarakocra
The contents of that supplement are definitely not in the adventure book itself.
Also, everything in that book, even if it's not in Princes of the Apocalypse, has now been updated by actual fuller books
Like both Modenkainens
Then 99% worth returning this print of the player companion
Yep. All those legacy races are now updated in Monsters of the Multiverse.
Like updated as in changed? Or just made available again?
Let’s call it “streamlined”.
Is the Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron worth it?
They’ve learned some stuff in the nine years since and just brought them up to modern standards.
I heard some of the newer books have less detailed info on the races or creatures.
Like they're reduced to blurbs about them
idk if true
None of them are unrecognizably different, and the old versions still play just fine.
It seems like they’re planning to make source books less setting-dependent, and leave that kind of lore for the settings books.
Because the specific lore for a race can and does change from world to world and from game to game.
Wayfinders was an odd case. It was basically a paid playtest for what eventually became Eberron: Rising From the Last War.
So if you only get one, I’d go for ERFTLW.
But if you can’t get enough Eberron, there is some stuff that’s found only in WGTE.
Btw I didn't notice until recently as I haven't sad down and read the character creation chapters yet in detail. But the basic rules gives some names for the races
I am not very creative when it comes to naming people. But I like to draw, so I will likely be drawing whatever character I eventually make.
I also wouldn't mind drawing other people's characters as sort of additional practice with my art.
There’s also sites like https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com that you can use for random names.
Countless generators for countless names. Some say it's the best fantasy name generator site around, which is very humbling to hear.
(That’s where D&D Beyond gets its random names from.)
Did they also get rid of racial feats?
Racial feats are still a thing though, to my knowledge, no race gets more than one
Except Dragonborn
I am interested in the spelljammer book because of Plasmoids and Astral Elves.
Also, they are relatively well-balanced
Spelljammer is not really a setting so much as it is a way to explore every setting except Eberron
All in a "treasure planet" type adventure
Remember that your DM has final say on which playable races are allowed in the campaign setting.
Also, yeah, you may ask your DM to play an Astral Elf in Faerun if you're interested in those
Though I personally am very much uninterested in the Spelljammer races.
We don't need a new type of elf for everything
But you know, I'm also the guy who thinks the Dusk Elves should just be a local culture of Shadar-Kai
And that the Shadar-Kai are as lackluster as can be
Is there a notable difference between "Changeling (Legacy)" from Eberron and the Changeling from MP:MotM?
The racial feats from Xanathar’s are still a part of the game, but I don’t think we’ll ever see any new ones.
They all kind of make sense. High elves are the ones who build and live in cities, wood elves live in forest are either nomadic or build forest villages, sea elves are proud and live in coral cities, Shadar-Kai live in the shadowfell and have a complex (somewhat abusive) relationship to the Raven Queen, drows live in the Underdark and have a (completely abusive) relationship with Lolth, Eladrins live in the feywilds are kind of the "primordial" elves...
Changeling - They are classed as Fey and can either be Medium or Small. The Changeling Instincts feature now has the Performance skill as an option. The Shapeshifter feature lets the character switch between Medium and Small.
https://screenrant.com/dungeons-dragons-multiverse-monsters-playable-race-differences-dnd/
All elves are currently distinctive enough but the concept of the Astral elves doesn't work for me. Just take any of the previous elves and put them in space, you don't need that
Lol
Also yes, Eladrins are Peter Pan without the sociopathy he had in the book
i made a wizard
(There's a part in the original where he's fighting the pirates and just kills one of the lost boys because it makes the fight more interesting to give his team a handicap)
(Peter Pan is chaotic evil incarnate)
But wasn't his goal to stop captain hook and help?
... I'm going to make a demon lord based on Peter Pan. The Demon Lord of innocence, playfulness, joy and adventures.
So, chaotic good or neutral?
Peter just wants to have fun.
Evil. He kills lost boys and switches teams in the middle of the fight for fun
Why not just make Peter Pan? xD
Yeah, but he's a demon lord and every other demon lord finds him annoying and far too volatile even by the standards of the abyss.
What is better milestones or exp?
It's a fun game I like to play sometimes to mess with the expectations of people : The god of compassion is neutral evil because he has compassion for everything equally, including diseases. You should have compassion for that fungi and invite it into your body and spread it elsewhere, all life is sacred. Meanwhile, the god of murder is lawful good : Choose your targets, eliminate the worst people from the world, be deliberate and reasonable in your killings.
Depends.
On?
In a heavily pre-written campaign, one on rails, milestone is probably slightly better
Exp is better for non-railroaded games.
Milestones also often lead to faster leveling which isn't my thing
I like long games where you get to explore each character level
And another thing
So i was in #character-discussion and they said i would be like a twilight cleric
Looking at multiclassing for monk and read:
Rogue will help you be even more of a skill monkey, and help you pull off dope as dhit acrobatic assassinations.
What is an acrobatic assassination?
Can you take unarmed fighting as a fighting style for ranger lvl 2?
"pull off dope"? pull off dope what?
xD
I guess the as there needs another s
Anyway, I'll try to find info about fighting styles brb
Doesn't appear to be one of the listed options, so by the rules no
For unarmed combat, it looks like Monk is a good option
You get benefits for being unarmed
And when you strike unarmed or with a Monk weapon you can strike again unarmed as a bonus action
It's in PHB for Monk.
It's not an actual thing, and seems to be moreso the one who wrote that description to add a bit of flare to the combination / explain what the multiclass plays like in general
5th level + Monk gets to attack twice with its attack action
I guess this leads to 3 attacks if also taking the unarmed bonus action?
can you avoid opportunity attacks somehow by attacking a creature on your turn then moving away right after attacking?
No because you would trigger their Reaction for an opportunity attack.
I don't get this then for Monk:
You are a skirmisher. Get in and out; don’t stay too long in melee or you’ll get throttled. Find the physically weakest target and stun them. Don’t ever stop moving; float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. Use your speed to advantage.
You can only avoid opportunity attacks if you use your Action to Disengage.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Disengage
If you take the Disengage action, your movement doesn't provoke opportunity attacks for the rest of the turn.
as Monk is mobile it doesn't seem like you can hit & run with it
I don't see that in the Monk section. Where are you quoting that from?
That's not a rule. That's just someone's post.
yeah i'm just trying to figure out what people mean with monk's playstyle
They're referring to the Mobile feat:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/feats/mobile
When you make a melee attack against a creature, you don't provoke opportunity attacks from that creature for the rest of the turn, whether you hit or not.
so i'm thinking mobile or cunning action is a must have for monk
Monkd don't get Cunning Action, that's rogue feature.
which kind of sucks because i wanted to try battle master with monk
that's what i mean, multiclassing with rogue
monk/fighter/rogue? 🤔
If you go Hafling (Mark of Healing), could you use healing touch as a monk who has no spellcasting?
Hello, thanks for having me. I’ve been invited to join a game (campaign) already in progress with all new players. They have played one round together. This will be my first time with DND and I am quite excited. I will be playing an Aasmir Hexblade which seems quite complicated for a newbie but I am a quick learner and usually do well with new material. I met with my DM to flesh out my character and he encouraged me to lean in to roleplaying in character and in first person. Everyone else is very third person and uncomfortable. I’d love to lean into this and push the immersive experience. Here’s my question: Does anyone have a favorite campaign video of people really playing in character?
Can someone teach me how to play dnd

I’d love to watch a round of well season players who are immersed into their character.
Go watch critical role or dimension 20 or dungeon dudes all seasoned players
Thank you.
Any particular favorite of yours in those?
Dimension 20 is good, but i love mostly the dm in there.
I love critical role. If you want shorter and a bit less serious: viva la dirtleague d&d
Oh yeah, Brennan Lee Mulligan is great
If I have a question about what I could accomplish with two of my spells/cantrips/innovations and how they would work together, is this the right channel?
One of the best dms in my personal opinion. Up there with the guy who dms for my party.
He's too energetic for me 🙈
Brennan Lee Mulligan is a master of comedic timing and his best joke is when he plays a character who's losing his goddamn mind.
That you for your suggestions on videos. I’ll check out those YouTube channels and watch one of those videos.
Thats what i love about him. The energy and clear love of the game.
He can do serious, even menacing (he did play a rather sinister catholic priest in Los Angeles by Night)
But yeah, I can understand why his excessive energy could get tiring
That should be fun to watch. I’ll start with him and go from there.
Good luck! I hope you find what you are looking for.
Darkness and Devil’s site. What kind of mayhem can I cause?
I admit, I'm not a big fan of watching other people play. Those D&D actual plays stuff that blew up after Critical Role are... Not really my thing
Darkness might also influence your party, as most wont be able to see in or through magical darkness
Also, actual plays has that thing where everyone ends up playing characters who physically look like them which...Eh.
So how can I use darkness in combat without hurting my party?
Many possibilities!
Possibly step away from them?
- In a duel. Cast Darkness on yourself, fight the enemy, enjoy
- When fighting a beholder. Beholders can only use eye rays against things they see and they can't see in magical darkness. That way, you force the beholder to focus its anti-magic cone on the source of the darkness, meaning that you now have control over the anti magic.
Nice.
- To cut off the escape of an enemy
- To help your team escape by casting the darkness while enemies chase you
- To force enemies to move, cast darkness on them, they'll be forced to leave the bubble of darkness, meaning that they might lose the advantage of their position
Anything else?
Good ideas. Thank you.
What starting lvl do you have for your campaign?
They started at level 1, I am joining them at level 3 (where they all are at now)
Good news found a game that ill be joining this friday
it will be my 2nd time playing dnd and the first time playing with a character i made myself
Going rogue
In person of online?
Awesome! I hope everything goes well for you.
Friday online and monday will be playing adventurers league at an actually place i want to get my practice up
Why do you ask?
Curiosity.
Everthing looks valid to me
Yeah, looks good.
It's not easy making a mistake on D&D Beyond with a first level character
the only thing i changed when porting that to roll20 was adding cold weather clothes cause of what were playing
Rime of the Frostmaiden?
Because I DM that campaign for two groups
was told its not an easy quest/story/ what do you call dnd quests?
Campaigns.
ah ha!
Or modules
Canpaigns. Which can have several quests, side quests, etc
Yeah. Rime of the Frostmaiden has a lot of small quests
i was told rime of the frostmaiden isnt exactly a cake walk for newbies
Hello, brand new player and was hoping I could get help on creating a character
im useless flint but i can help
Eh? It's a bit railroady at times but...
railroady?
I don't think the difficulty is too high
In the sense that there are few meaningful choices to be made, the story is on rails.
well i hope no one looks at the high elf with heck all morals to make a good decision lol
Dm tells you what happens, you stay on a certain path even though it's technically open world for some parts
@upbeat crystal will need lots of help, I all ik is I 2ant a dragonborn character
Want*
Have you discussed with your party what kind of character would fit?
I just hoined the server a few min ago.... so i have not 😦
Joined*
I thought I could just pop into games
Do you have a campaign you can join?
Not exactly
You can make characters just for fun though. When playing with a group it's good to discuss together what kind of character everyone makes so you have a well balanced party

No idea if this is the best place to post this. If not, I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction and I'll delete it immediately.
Hey, so, lemme preface this by saying I've only played D&D, never DMed. Anyway, I know the best advice is to probably just find and run a published campaign rather than starting my own--especially for what I have in mind. However, I'm definitely the type to just head-first into projects and kinda make it up as I go. That being said, though, I've got a lot of ideas, just nobody to really bounce them off of to see if they make sense/could work out/would be fun for players to experience. I'm very excited about the ideas I have, but I don't really have anyone to really talk to about it. Boyfriend tries to listen, but I know it's not really his thing. For those willing to listen and help me learn, it's a Disney-themed campaign. Well, Disney mixed with a few other things for a bit of extra fun. Thanks in advance!
Can Mage armor only be cast on creature that do not have any armor ?
a willing creature who isnt wearing armor
mmh
The folks over in #dm-discussion would be best to help if you haven't found that channel already!
Thanks, mate! Just noticed that people were already chatting and didn't wanna interrupt anyone.
do you get adv to grappling against a prone creature?
Look up the Prone condition. What does it say?
grapple isn't an attack, it's a str check so i assume no adv?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-a-conditions#Prone
- A prone creature's only movement option is to crawl, unless it stands up and thereby ends the condition.
- The creature has disadvantage on attack rolls.
- An attack roll against the creature has advantage if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature. Otherwise, the attack roll has disadvantage.
so how does that work with grapple since there's no attack roll? no effect?
no effect for the grapple but id say grappling prone creatures is a great idea
since you need movement to stand up
Grapple is an attack.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Grappling
When you want to grab a creature or wrestle with it, you can use the Attack action to make a special melee attack, a grapple. If you're able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them.
The target of your grapple must be no more than one size larger than you and must be within your reach. Using at least one free hand, you try to seize the target by making a grapple check instead of an attack roll: a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target's Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use). You succeed automatically if the target is incapacitated. If you succeed, you subject the target to the grappled condition. The condition specifies the things that end it, and you can release the target whenever you like (no action required).
so that means you attack roll to see if you can touch the creature then a str check to see if your grapple succeeds?
wait...
yeah i don't see if grappling a prone creature actually helps or not
so i'm going on a limb and gonna say grapple is only str check, no attack roll, and grapple str check gets no adv against a prone creature
That's correct.
i believe so yes
darn, I guess grapple would be useless on a low str and high dex char
it is not advisable usually yes
hello new here

so basically do I just go to #looking-for-players to start playing?
I have played very simplified DnD irl long time ago and remember it was fun
Friends and I went camping and used cards as 20-side die
If you have some grasp of the rules and know how to make a character, yes, check that channel to contact DMs advertising their games.
k thanks
when you 2-hand a long sword, does dueling fighting style apply?
No
When you are wielding a melee weapon in one hand and no other weapons, you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls with that weapon.
there isn't another weapon in your 2nd hand
Right, but you’re still not wielding a weapon in one hand.
You’re wielding a weapon in two hands.
Two-handed weapons only use two hands in the moment of making the attack. Before and after that moment, your second hand is free while the first holds the weapon
but i guess in the attack it's no +2 bonus, right
That statement is both true and completely irrelevant here. 😅
If you’re using both hands at the moment of the attack, you do not qualify for Dueling. It explicitly requires you to use a single hand.
for echo knight can you resummon an echo unlimited times without resting?
I don't get Ranger's Canny, do you get double proficiency for the skill check or just the ability check, e.g. strength ability rollcheck when choosing athletics?
You choose a skill and get double proficiency for that skill alone. So Stealth or Athletics or whatever.
It’s a skill so nature, survival, etc
Thank you @wraith zenith, @twilit radish, and @mossy pagoda. I watched the "Welcome to the Dark Side [Full Episode] | Escape From the Bloodkeep Episode 1" from Dimension 20. Very helpful to see the roleplaying and fun interactions. It was exactly what I was looking for.

Do monks have proficiency in unarmed strikes? Couldn't find it in Martial Arts
actually all classes are proficient with unarmed strikes, right?
Instead of using a weapon to make a melee weapon attack, you can use an unarmed strike: a punch, kick, head-butt, or similar forceful blow (none of which count as weapons). On a hit, an unarmed strike deals bludgeoning damage equal to 1 + your Strength modifier. You are proficient with your unarmed strikes.
Bingo
not every character will be as effective, but in general every one can (try to) kick, slap, headbutt or elbow check someone else 😛
Im new trying to get into a campaign but the looking for players chat isn’t helping
In what way is it not helping?
Can’t find any that are good timing on weekends and most recent ones are full
Then you keep looking. There are way more players than DMs so openings get filled up very quickly.
You could expand your search to other sites/servers.
Any you recommend?
Facebook, reddit, Demiplane, Meetup, etc.
I've never used any myself, but I know there are options:
Check out various Discords (many D&D YouTubers have public ones with channels to find players/games, for example), MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&D Beyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, EN World, RPG Geek, RPGnet), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.
If you’re interested in play by post (asynchronous text-based play), check out Role Gate, RPGCrossing, Gamers Plane, D&D Beyond's forums, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Thanks

if i'm adding monk as a multiclass to ranger, would i add Monastery and Icon to the character's Bio? E.g. "Your monastery was founded long ago by a cloud giant and is inside a cloud castle that can be reached only by flying."
ok moving it
can someone dm me so i can call for help making a character
Ask your questions here.
What are you referring to "content"?
What happens if a player casts wish and wishes for something ludicrously impactful, (e.g. wishing for a god to die, for every living being to be blinded or for all gold in the multiverse to disappear)
At some point I imagine the gods themselves or some greater force would step in and be like "hold up..."
the spell can fail, or it can have unintended consequences
Ah I missed that bit, where you can just have it fail.
As the DM you have some options.
Maybe the thing happens and the universe does its best to try to reknit everything as it was. Like the god of nature dies and suddenly some angel is promoted to godhood.
Or maybe the wish takes time to go into effect and a bunch of emissaries of gods try to kill the caster before it does.
Or: inevitables. Which are tailor made for this sort of thing.
Or it fails
Whatever makes for the best story
Yeah I wondered about that, like if the Wish could be considered like an explosion that takes effect and could be controlled if caught quickly enough
So like they wish for a god to die and time stops and the god's avatar appears before them holding a sphere that contains their wish looking really pissed off.
And that's all assuming they haven't just made some blunder in the wording of it that you can exploit.
Lol. If you wished for all the gold in the multiverse, I think it'd be fun if you and your team lost all their gold
As a failure of the spell of course
That'd make you think twice about such grandiose wishes
But perhaps it could start a fued. So idk if I'd actually do that
Why was the emoji removed?
I am on mobile and it let me send it.
It didn’t add anything to the discussion- also if you have questions about moderation/rules please ask in #moderator-support
It did add to the discussion. It was expressing my laughter without a "haha" or "lol".
We have folks who use screen readers and other accessibility tools. Images and reacts are not as accessible as text.
For any further questions about rules/moderation I again point you to #moderator-support
As I said, if you have a problem with emojis, why does this server have any?
And your excuse about screen recording is irrelevant to this particular channel.
Also if it’s not very important to conversation surely it doesn’t matter if some people can’t see it right?
Exactly.
Please return to on-topic discussion. Questions about moderation can be asked in #moderator-support
Okay folks - please return to on topic discussion
That’s fine -we have records too
Anyone know a good place to host a campaign online? I would use roll20 but i don't want to buy the books again as I already have some on D&D beyond and my characters are on there as well
Doesn't DND beyond have features for at least some aspects of running a campaign?
Im not sure this is new to me
I am looking for a place to play and learn I have tried to play IRL but everyone just gets too busy or can't commit to it
Basically me and my friends want to try out D&D but cant play irl so i just wanted to know a good place to host an online game for beginners
or if D&D beyond has a hosting feature
If you or others have more resources like this, I would be interested in having the link. I don't mind having them sent as a message directly to me if this would be considered spam. Any and all resources related to running a campaign, creating maps, and similar. I have bookmarked roll20, owlbear.app, inkarnate (map maker), heroforge, dndbeyond, and possibly one or two other sites.
Go on reddit. r/battlemaps is a great resource. So are google image search and pinterest.
@compact pelican are yall looking for more PCs also?
If you like the idea of playing in-person I'd suggest to keep looking for groups
I promise that consistant players are out there, you just need to be vigiliant
IRL I suggest trying out reddit r/lfg or making a post on the subreddit for your city. Or checking the local game store.
Im not too knowledgeable on D&D terms but if your asking if we need another player we currently have a party of 5 and a DM so it would be hectic
@glass summit Thanks, I have probably played in 3 campaigns, but we don't make it, but maybe 2 battles and everyone gets busy. We have even tried on different discord channels but never get anywhere. I am staying with it because the little experience I have has been great. And I am a fantasy nut. I love it. I am just looking for a game. Been looking for about 5 months now. I have tried different servers but mostly no new guys get spots
Yeah I heard a funny monkey's paw about gold... Just make it come from somewhere.
Party wishes for a million gold... Local kingdom is now on the hunt for magical robbers who emptied their treasury.
@compact pelican I totally get that and kudos to yall for having the people where I live it is few and far between that are into this stuff
Thanks for being honest and responding.
I am brand new to the game. I'm working on a character after watching some people play on YouTube. It looked fun. I haven't even started looking for a game yet. I will be looking for games that allow for slight homebrew and creativity with the use of spells and abilities, as that was made this game seem fun from watching people play it.
We could team up looking for a DM if that would be of interest to you.
This article covers a few other popular choices.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
@cyan iris that sounds great buddy I have alot of the official books on a hard drive so I can read up on how to do stuff and I take screen shots of the most important stuff like when to make what checks. I would love to team up
I will read that once I'm done reading the current 10 tabs I'm working on 🙂
This actually helps a lot thanks man
Can I have help me with some dm stuff I've never done it and Im somewhat new to DnD
I don't know if this help but I thought it could help
Well it won't let me post the pic
If you have DMing questions head over to #dm-discussion
Okay thank you
hello👋👋

I used to do D&D at lunch in middle school and I'm looking to start a game up on a youtube show i have at the end of it, but if i try and be the DM i feel i will just bomb and it wont work well. Is there a way to find a DM that might be able to host it and maybe teach me how to take over? How would i find someone?
You learn from failure. If you don't try then you won't ever get better.
There are very few DMs (relative to the number of players out there). Trying to find one to DM your campaign only to have you take over is unlikely — most DMs are busy as it is with their own projects.
so theres no places to find one?
So you want someone to teach you how to DM? Or you want someone to run a youtube channel show, get it popular, then train you to take over for them?
#750812887697588356 if you're just looking for a DM (who will most likely be running whatever campaign they've decided to do).
And what would this DM be running? Their own campaign or something you have in mind? What do they get out of it for mentoring/training you while they DM for your streaming show?
Well beggars cant be choosey, as far as mentoring idk how all this works so if someone would rather do it then rather than teach thats fine i could pick stuff up as time goes
If you find a paid DM, they could be more willing to accommodate training as a part of it.
Money does indeed talk and get people to do things.
is there different types of DMs?
Yeah no DM does it the exact same way.
like as far as how strict they are? Seems with my group we might need someone forgiving with a light heart.
Yes, its a wild swing.
Building a social group that vibes well together to play a game can be hard. Wishing you better luck with your next group and game.
Yes, DM-styles are highly individual. No two DMs will be the same. Diversity amongst DMs is as wide as diversity amongst individual humans because DMs are humans.

People use Discord for text and/or voice chat during games.
And then they usually use a virtual table top to actually play the game
So there is not a way to do the game all on discord?
Sure there is.
You could play without maps — theater of the mind.
You could upload a map as a static image.
You could use Avrae for dice rolling.
https://avrae.io/
You could just let people roll their physical dice at home.
There’s no right or wrong answers here. You just gotta find what works for you and your group.
For real.
First you have to find a group to begin with, then the even harder part is finding a group you have chemistry with.
It's like dating but you're trying to match with five people at once.
Hi, just joined, looking for advice on joining a group
...I could have just backread in this channel
if a creature gets moved upwards and falls, do they make dexterity saving throws to avoid fall damage or do they always take fall damage?
They always take fall damage if they dont have something that prevents it, yes
Are various third party sites compatible with a character made on DNDbeyond? Roll20, fantasygrounds, and similar sites
Roll20 and FantasyGrounds have licenses with WotC to sell 5E digital books.
if you're doing a chase and accumulate 5 exhaustion points, does that mean you need 5 days to recover as you need 5 long rests to recover as long rests recover only 1 exhaustion point?
If the exhaustion was accumulated as a result of taking the dash action during the chase encounter, they can uniquely remove all the levels of exhaustion with a short rest
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/running-the-game#Dashing
But if you accumulate 5 exhaustion in overworld travelling then you would need 5 days of long rest to recover back to 0 exhaustion points, right?
Yes, if you were to continuously fail the Con save when doing a Forced March, and eventually accumulated 5 levels of exhaustion, you would need to take 5 long rests to remove all the exhaustion
@crude halo we have #dnd-rules for rules questions (especially non-basic ones like these)
true but I thought it was a noob question so it should belong in here
Hollo I am new in the discord, but I buy Talespire to play DnD, in my city are no mucho people how likes RPG games and I try to fin people how I can play, if some one like to play in Talespire, it will be really nice!

I don't fully understand the diff between minor illusion and silent image
if you want to make appear a thing you can hide behind, for example
the 2 offer the same possibilities, right ?
In that situation yeah but what about other situations?
Also silent image creates a much larger thing iirc
I suppose it's better to take Minor illusion as an AT rogue
Minor illusion is a sound or an static image, silent image can be animated but is silent
Imagine using it to make the sound of someone eating chips happen
In someone's ears
:troll:
can a silent image count as an ally for the purpose of sneak attack ?
Hey iam new to d&d and i got the essential kit was i supposed to cut out all the cards that were given in the box ?
No, only creatures can count as allies
They're perforated, so yeah
Doesnt it depend on if the target thinks that illusion is real or not, thus an enemy within 5 feet or not?
Illusion spells are real unless the target investigated it or had reason to believe otherwise
You don’t need advantage on the attack roll if another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it, that enemy isn’t incapacitated, and you don’t have disadvantage on the attack roll.
The illusion isn't an enemy, it's an illusion
but if I make the illusion look like myself and I'm hiding behind an object
Imagine someone hiding behind a rock, you know he's there, he casts Silent image and you think he's coming for you but it's an illusion
The illusion isn't an enemy, it's an illusion
I want to DM for some friends. They already did a d&d one-shot once, so they know how to make the characters and they know the system a little bit, but we're all new. I'm thinking about using Tasha's Cauldron and Volo's guide as optional stuff if they want to diversify, and I'm looking into making just a fun campaign for them to spend a cool time together. Is there anything I need to know? And can anyone give me any tips for DMing?
I’d recommend checking our #dm-discussion channel
ah, thanks
@lyric fjord don't be afraid to bend rules too
yeah. i was thinking about making some house rules, and ask my players if they like it
Yes and overall have fun
hey guys, looking for a party 🙂

My general DM advice: #dnd-newcomers message
I wanna try that
Hey! im new to dnd and would like to know if anyone would be willing to help me set up to play some
You should check out the resources in this channel's pinned messages. Those will help you get started, and if you have any more specific questions, this is the place to ask them!
Thanks will do!
how will i go about finding people that start campaigns ect here. just through #looking-for-players ?
Yep!
is there any damage mechanic for pushing/shoving an enemy into a wall?
like basic shove and open hand technique shove?
Shove action
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#ShovingaCreature
Using the Attack action, you can make a special melee attack to shove a creature, either to knock it prone or push it away from you. If you're able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them.
The target must be no more than one size larger than you and must be within your reach. Instead of making an attack roll, you make a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target's Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use). You succeed automatically if the target is incapacitated. If you succeed, you either knock the target prone or push it 5 feet away from you.
but does it say there's damage if they hit a wall?
dms discretion probably
There's no RAW for impact in that way.
Hello I'm new
My buddy wants me to join him in a game gave me a sheet and basically I'm on my own. I'm lost in the sauce.
What I am trying to play as is a human necromancer
I got some things done but not alot
Idk if this is important but we're playing 3.5
That's actually very important; most of the discussion on this server revolves around 5th edition. I'm not sure what kind of help you can get in #dnd-elder-editions, where they discuss older editions, but that'd be my recomendation for where to start. Hopefully you can get pointed to other helpful resources.

Would a blade "formed of psychic power" deal slashing + psychic damage or just psychic?
Probably just psychic. Compare the soulknife's blades. If you're making up abilities and the like, you should head to #homebrew.
Soulknife and Shadowblade only do psychic damage.
İs there like a video that i can watch to learn the rules
Check out the pins in this channel

Thanks. I play with my boyfriend and his family. So luckely I can use there dice

thoughts on having PC sheets visible to all players in roll20?
No right or wrong answer there.
I don't personally mind if my players see each other's sheets.
I assume players can help each other with their character sheets
Sure but remind them that the player's character sheet is theirs alone. There shouldn't be pressure from other players how to do a "proper build."
it's more that they can't find where things are on their sheets and helps people understand character sheets by looking at others
I'd allow it. I don't think there's any reason to discourage general helpfulness or attempts to learn together.
ok i think i made character
